County Fleadh Returns to Milltown

West Kerry

Mid summer is nigh and the sound of fiddle and flute in the balmy evening air means the County Fleadh is around the corner, - June 19th to 23rd, returning to Milltown for the second year in a row. Supporters, sponsors and friends of Comhaltas gathered to launch the event on May 31st.

Summer

MC Owen O’Shea welcomed guests, including Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council Norma Foley, who acknowledged the support of main sponsors Chapter 23 Kerry and West Limerick Credit Unions and all the local businesses. Kerry County Council’s financial support is vital to the event and Norma explained how the council’s vision is encapsulated in the Fleadh- with the community, County Council, businesses and volunteers working together to support heritage and culture. Norma quoted Elizabeth Andrews, who said “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” The Fleadh depends on countless hours of volunteerism and Norma thanked the local Comhaltas branch for their work. Norma also complemented Milltown as the ideal centre for this county-wide event, with top class facilities in the new Presentation Secondary School, the new Community Centre and the town square, a perfect civic space to host public events, including the free concerts and ceilidh during the Fleadh. The County Fleadh takes place in Milltown from June 19th to 23nd, and as well as the competitions, offers a huge range of free street entertainment. Kila, the cutting edge trad. group, headline the festival, playing on the Gig Rig in the square on Saturday night, June 22nd. Two open–air ceilidh, Friday night with the Shandrum Ceilí Band and Sunday afternoon with Ui Bhriain, will have the square hopping while “Time to Party” will have children’s events all through Sunday afternoon. Young musicians are invited to take part in the Denis Courtney Street Entertainment Competition, with €500 in prizes from the local Milltown and Rathmore Credit Union. The annual Singing Club takes place on Thursday, June 20th in Larkins’ Bar. Music sessions will be happening over the weekend in all local bars and Spin City funfair will be in town all week.

Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 11th June when the feature will be the . biographical musical fantasy film based on the life of musician Elton John, Rocketman. The film follows the fantastical journey of transformation from shy piano prodigy Reginald Dwight into international superstar Elton John. This inspirational story -- set to Elton John's most beloved songs and performed by star Taron Egerton -- tells the universally relatable story of how a small-town boy became one of the most iconic figures in pop culture.

The following week on Tuesday 18th June the feature will be At Eternity's Gate. Starring William Defoe the film is a biographical drama film about the final years of painter Vincent van Gogh's life. The film is a journey inside the world and mind of a person who, despite skepticism, ridicule and illness, created some of the world's most beloved and stunning works of art. At Eternity's Gate is set during a self-imposed exile in Arles and Auvers-SurOise, France, the Dutch painter develops his unique, colorful style of painting. While grappling with religion, mental illness and a tumultuous friendship with French artist Paul Gauguin, van Gogh begins to focus on his relationship with eternity rather than the pain his art causes him in the present. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News Louis Murchan Don't Risk It Plant Health Awareness Campaign A “Don’t Risk it!” Plant Health awareness raising campaign was launched for 2019 targeting international travellers, tourists and commercial businesses who are bringing plants, plant products and other high-risk items made of plant material into Ireland from abroad. Plant Health is closely linked with Food Safety, Food security and protection of the wider environment. Plants of course play a vital role with pollinators in biodiversity. The aim of the “Don’t Risk It!” campaign is to raise awareness around the importance of plant health and how the public can play a part in protecting it. Bloom is the perfect platform to launch this strategy and the Minster encouraged people to visit the Department at stand 17 in the Floral Pavilion and engage with them on this topic. This campaign will generate greater awareness among the general public of this serious issue and that people will think twice and decide when abroad, not to risk it but instead leave all plants and plant products in that country. People can also visit DAFM’s website www.agriculture.gov. ie/dontriskit where more information is available. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is promoting a “Don’t Risk it!” awareness raising campaign targeted at international travellers, tourists and commercial businesses who are bringing plants, plant products and other high risk items made of plant material into Ireland from abroad. This campaign is fully endorsed by the European Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO) and the European Commission via revised plant health legislation. One of the pathways of plant harmful organisms entering Ireland is through people bringing plants or plant products into the country which contain these pests/diseases. The objective of the campaign is to highlight the social, environmental and economic impact of bringing in infected plant material or quarantine pests and diseases into Ireland. These impacts can be enormous, e.g. Xylella fastidiosa is a new disease for Europe, which effects over 200 plant species such as Oak, Beech, Ash, Rosemary and Lavender. It is found in parts of Italy, France and Spain with devastating effects. It is essential both from an economic and environmental perspective that diseases such as this are prevented from entering and becoming established in Ireland. Food Safety Information Campaign For World Food Safety Day Ahead of the inaugural World Food Safety Day on Friday 7 June, numerous agencies, industry representatives, retailers and farmers have come together to launch a food safety information campaign aimed at consumers, highlighting the collaboration that is required from farm to fork to protect food safety. The theme of World Food Safety Day 2019 is “Food Safety, Everyone’s Business”. All actors in the food chain, from farm to table, whether they produce, process, sell or prepare food, have a role in keeping it safe. Farmers, processors and business operators must adopt good practices to ensure that the potential risks to food safety are properly addressed. The Department(s) of Agriculture, Health, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), HSE and Local Authorities work tirelessly to control food safety risks along the food chain, through direct and indirect oversight, and also by fostering collaboration among stakeholders. Promoting and safeguarding public health is a strategic priority for DAFM, with over 600 staff members directly involved in food safety and food authenticity controls. The Food Safety, and Food Authenticity Strategy, sets out the aims and objectives that DAFM will pursue as the food industry continues to implement Food Wise 2025. Food safety is very importance to the health and well-being of people in Ireland and further afield. A food supply that is adequate in quantity, quality, accessibility and safety is undoubtedly a prerequisite for achieving and maintaining the health of Ireland’s population. When food safety is not taken seriously, it not only significantly affects health and well-being, but also has economic consequences for individuals, families, communities, businesses and countries and can impose a substantial burden on healthcare systems and markedly reduce economic productivity. 10 West Kerry Live

It is important that Ireland’s good reputation for food safety is maintained, and where possible built on, because every citizen expects and deserves safe and trustworthy food. Organic Farming Scheme Balancing Payments The commencement has been announced of the balancing payments on the Organic Farming Scheme for farmers. This scheme is the main support scheme for new and existing organic farmers under the Rural Development Programme 2014-2020. The balancing payment represents the final 15% of the 2018 payment and is being paid earlier than last year. Currently there are 1,588 organic farmers in the Organic Farming Scheme managing c. 72,000 hectares of land. The scheme has resulted in a doubling of land in Ireland being farmed as organic. Annual payments under the Organic Farming Scheme come to over €10 million. The Organic Farming Scheme (OFS) is an agri-environmental Scheme designed to deliver enhanced environmental and animal welfare benefits and to provide compensation to farmers who farm their holding to organic farming standards for a period of five years. The overall objective is to deliver the environmental and animal welfare benefits, while encouraging producers to respond to the market demand for organically produced food. The OFS is a major scheme under Ireland’s Rural Development Programme. Some 1,588 farmers receive a payment under this scheme to support their organic enterprise. Annual payments under the Organic Farming Scheme come to over €10m. The Organic section can be contacted on 0761 064415 or by email to organic@agriculture.gov.ie . Shearing Will Cost Farmers In The West At Least €1.60/Ewe This Year Shearing will cost farmers in the west at least €1.60/ewe this year as wool prices continue to slide. Reported prices for wool off mountain ewes varies from 20c/kg in the west to 30c-40/kg in the northwest and southwest. With shearing costs coming in around €2/hd, and wool yield at under 2kg/hd, this leaves the farmer facing costs per animal of €1.20/ hd to €1.60/hd depending on the region. Sligo shearer Padraig Devaney said shearing activity on the hills was cranking up this week but he admitted that the poor wool price meant the mood among flock owners was depressed. Lowland wool has also taken a severe hit, back from €1/kg last year to around 60c/kg this summer. Wicklow wool merchant Vincent Pierce said there was no demand from Chinese buyers for lower grade

and rougher wool from Ireland, Britain and New Zealand. He predicted that wool prices could ease back to 50c/kg if next Tuesday’s wool sale in Bradford goes badly. Doonbeg Farmers Advised Not To Spread Slurry During Donald Trump Visit There may be other interpretations to this headline, but one must wonder with amusement if this is a genuine concern for the expected visitors to the Doonbeg/West Clare region. Or, is it an even greater concern for the local community, with the imminent onslaught of bluster tweets and offensive comments? Let us hope that the current US President will show this country the courtesy that he has singularly failed to do in every other country he has visited, since taking office in 2017. Should he manage to do so, the office of President of the United States of America must be shown the respect it deserves. Should he not, Well, that’s another conversation for another day. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

One for the Boys for Father’s Day! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer to affect men, after lung cancer. One in eight men in Ireland will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system producing a fluid component of semen that nourishes sperm. As men age, the prostate may become enlarged in a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous condition. Prostate cancer also causes enlargement of the prostate. Both conditions share similar symptoms of frequent urge to urinate, difficulty when urinating and/or incomplete emptying of the bladder. While these conditions are quite rare in men under forty, they are increasing in those over 60 years. As with many cancers, the risk of incidence increases with age because we are exposed to cancer-causing factors over a longer period of time and our ability to naturally fend off risks may diminish with age through loss of vitality and health, poorer nutrition and less active lifestyles. Many cancers, including prostate may take years to manifest which is also reflected in the statistics relating to cancer risk and aging. While the statistics are alarming laid out in black and white, a colourful diet is a sure way to reduce your risk of prostate cancer and improve the outcomes and survival rates for those already diagnosed. The World Cancer Research Fund Continuous Update Project (CUP) has revised 2018 findings on diet, nutrition, physical activity and Prostate Cancer. The CUP reported that there is now strong evidence that obesity and height (being tall) are significant factors associated with risk of advanced Prostate cancer. They also reported evidence that higher consumption of dairy products, diets high in calcium, low plasma alpha-tocopherol concentration (vitamin E) and low plasma selenium concentration may increase prostate cancer risk. Unless you were stretched on a rack as a kid, being tall is mainly down to genetics – however, all the other significant factors mentioned in the report are directly associated with the diet and lifestyle choices you make every day. Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant responsible for the red pigment of tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, is a crucial ingredient to reduce prostate cancer risk. It is thought that lycopene targets specific free radicals associated with DNA damage to prostate cells which can instigate the onset of prostate cancer. Tomato products such as passata and bottled tomato juice are also a rich source of lycopene, offering us year-round protection when fresh produce is out of season. Alphatocopherol (vitamin E) and selenium mentioned in the CUP report, work in a similar way and are very specific to prostate cells. Pomegranate seeds also provide important antioxidants such as polyphenols, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. Like lycopene, these antioxidants protect the prostate cells from free radical damage caused by metabolic activity and environmental toxins. Anthocyanins may also reduce the risk of urinary and bladder infections associated with enlarged prostate. Pomegranate seeds have the added benefit of inhibiting oestrogen production, which is a possible cause of BPH in older men. Cruciferous vegetables are top defenders when it comes to prostate cancer. Sulfuronane in these vegetables acts as a potent anticancer agent and is particularly beneficial in hormone sensitive prostate cancer. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale can be easily incorporated into the diet – just don’t boil them to a mush! Steaming or simmering in a little water will help to ensure your prostate gets the best from these veggies. Soybeans, although controversial, are worth a mention. Populations with higher than average intakes of soybeans tend to have lower incidence of 16 West Kerry Live

both prostate and oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer. This is attributed to phytoestrogens which offer protection from the harmful, growth promoting effects of oestrogen on these cancer cells. Other legumes and lentils also provide this kind of protection and fibre, which helps eliminate excess oestrogen from the body. These populations also enjoy a diet rich in fresh vegetables, eat very little meat and no dairy – all of which are relevant to both breast and prostate cancer. It is unclear if the protective nature of these diets is due to soybean intake but more likely due to a healthier approach to eating and the increased consumption of plant-based foods. A moderate intake of protein from oily fish, nuts and seeds will provide healthy fats which reduce risk of prostate cancer. Monounsaturated oils from olives, pumpkin seeds and avocado (rich in vitamin E) are protective, while the heated, treated oils such as corn, rapeseed and vegetable oils increase risk. Fried foods, trans fats, red meat, sugar, dairy and high calcium intakes are also associated with increased risk of prostate cancer which may explain the rising rates among the Irish men! Extracts from Saw Palmetto and Pumpkin seed, available as supplements may be included in a prostate-friendly diet but do seek good advice on these supplements. Selenium, Zinc, B vitamins and folate can be added to the manly list and readily available in foods such as brazil nuts, wholegrains, fish and pumpkin seeds and topped up if needed in supplement form. So, there ye have it! Men of West and Mid Kerry, enjoy Father’s Day - the kitchen is officially all yours! DINGLE LIGHTHOUSE

Edited By Ted Creedon

The Hydrographer of the Admiralty has published the following notice in the London Gazette: - ‘The Dingle Harbour Authorities have given notice, that on or about 1st April, 1887, a light will be exhibited from a lighthouse recently erected on the point about half a mile N.W.by N. from Beenbane Point, east side of Dingle Harbour entrance: - The light is a fixed red light, and should be visible in clear weather from a distance of nine miles.

BLACK SEA MAIZE From – Cork Examiner, 13 September, 1866. Owing to the unprecedented severity of the weather at this early period of the year, a large Austrian barque, laden with maize from the Black Sea for Limerick, has through stress of weather sought shelter in Smerwick Harbour, on the west coast of Kerry. The Captain of the barque, and the pilot, landed yesterday but owing to the heavy gale of wind were unable to return. Having no money they were in a very inconvenient position; but the Rev. Patrick Mangan, P. P., Territor [Ferriter], to whom they appealed, supplied the best that his hospitable house could afford. SANK OFF THE BLASKETS From – Cork Examiner, 20 May, 1864. On Saturday morning last, in a dense fog, a Scotch [Scots] schooner called the Mary Whyte, of Givan, Ayreshire, was on her voyage round from Tralee in ballast, and bound for Killorglin. The vessel, which was in the charge of a pilot named Daniel Lenihan, struck one of the Blasket Islands, off the western coast of Kerry.

From – Kerry Evening Post, 6 April, 1887.

Captain Blennerhassett, a splendid swimmer and a powerful man immediately dived after him and brought him to the surface where he struggled manfully to keep him. The father of young Costello, who was steering appears to have lost all presence of mind, and permitted the yacht to drift away from the drowning men, who sank and rose several times.

GUNPOWDER DEATH From – Dublin Evening Mail, 26 November, 1861. At a place called Curraheen, near Tralee, on the road to Dingle, a girl has met her death in consequence of a small quantity of gunpowder which was left over the fire-place to remove damp it had taken. The powder fell accidentally into the fire, the explosion from which so injured her that she died on Thursday. The father of the girl, who was about 15 years of age, lived principally by shooting wild fowl on the sea shore in the neighbourhood, and had the powder for this purpose. PLEASURE TRIP TRAGEDY From – Cork Examiner, 23 May, 1845.

Some fishing boats lying near eventually came to the scene of the disaster, and their crews succeeded in recovering the body of Captain Blennerhassett and bring it ashore where medical aid was almost immediately procured but life was quite extinct. Costello’s body has not yet been found. This melancholy event has www.dinglehorseriding.com/booking cast a gloom over all classes in Killorglin. Captain Blennerhassett was about 38 years old.

Booking essential:

KILLED BY RUNAWAY HORSE From – Kerry Weekly Reporter, 20 February, 1892. A farmer named Thomas Quinn, of Ballyferriter, was killed on his way home from Dingle on last Saturday evening. There were three or four others with him in the car, when on the top of the height on the upper road to Ventry, the horse shyed [sic] and ran. He jumped out to stop the furious animal, but he was caught between the car and the ditch and crushed. He was taken to a house in the neighbouring village where he died in a few hours. He was 45 years.

After having been for three hours bumping on the rocks she went down head foremost and sank in deep water. The crew and pilot, six in number, took to the small boat and after a long pull got into Limerick [Smerwick] harbour, west of Dingle. On Sunday morning the crew left Dingle per mail car for Tralee, from thence per rail to Cork for the Sailor’s Home at Queenstown.

John Hearlehy and son went, with three others, on an excursion of pleasure on the Dingle bay on Sunday morning but were not far from the shore when, owing to their inexperience, the boat was upset and all five thrown into the water. Hearlehy and son not being able to swim, immediately sank. The others remained floating until they were picked up by a boat which put out to their assistance from the shore.

BRANDON HEAD WRECKAGE

Options: www.dinglehorseriding.com •info@dinglehorseriding.com info@dinglehorseriding.com CAPTAIN BLENNERHASSETT OF KILLORGLIN www.dinglehorseriding.com

From – Lloyd’s List, 17 April, 1843.

From – Dublin Evening Mail, 22 June, 1867.

Part of the stern of a vessel was washed on shore near Brandon Head, marked Barbara Ann, St. John’s, N.B. [New Brunswick]. Also, a bottle with the name ‘Julien Bedoe’ on it, together with several pieces of wreck, apparently not long in the water; some fragments of spars, and pieces of sail marked ‘Maworth, maker, Liverpool’ have also been picked up.

It appears that Captain Townsend Blennerhassett and some members of his family, his wife and child included, went cruising in his sail boat yesterday on the River Laune near Cromane. The towrope of the skiff attached to the yacht got foul, and one of his boatmen, named Costello, in attempting to free it fell overboard and sank.

Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Yacht Race 2019 The Volvo Dun Laoghaire to Dingle Yacht Race starts from Dun Laoghaire on June 12th and is scheduled to arrive into Dingle Harbour over the weekend of June 15th and 16th. The race has had a long association with the Dingle Skellig Hotel where the gala prizegiving will take place on the evening of Saturday June 15th. Race organisers have worked hard over the years to build connections with Dingle Town Community and Business. In 2019 this has progressed to a new level by working closely with local bodies and local businesses in Dingle. Firstly, the race organisers have run a selection process with Dingle Sailing Club to select young sailors from the area to crew on yachts racing in the event. This will include a top spot for a young sailor to join the Windfall Team on the 94 foot super yacht for the race. Windfall will be chasing the course record for the race, already held by Michael Cotter and his team. The intention is to get some reports from the chosen Dingle sailor of his / her experience on the boat via media channels. Several other sailors will be found crewing positions on other participating boats. Dingle Harbour and Marina personnel have long provided support for the event and will continue to do so with some reduced rates for visiting boats, as well as assisting with the race finish logistics. The prizes for the race come from Dingle Crystal and a special Volvo Perpetual Trophy has been commissioned for the race again in 2019. The race will have approximately 40 boats racing varying in size between 30 and 100 feet long with crews of between 2 and 20 sailors on board. The first D2D race took place in 1993 and the race has grown to become one of the great mini offshore sailing challenges in the UK and Irish waters. Underlining this growth in status is the fact that the D2D race 24 West Kerry Live

now forms part of both the Royal Ocean Racing Club and the Irish Sea Offshore Racing Associations 2019 series. Dublin Bay Sailing Club also support the event by providing race equipment and personnel. The race will test crews’ skills in terms of fast sailing, accurate navigation and tactics and great teamwork. Crews include both male and female top sailors and there is a separate prize to encourage this growth of women in the race. In addition a number of mini 6.50 yachts will race in a separate division for a one design prize for the class. Of the 15 finishers from 43 starters in 2017, 3 of them were mini 6.50 yachts underlining their ability as sailors and the pedigree of the boats to handle all kinds of conditions despite their size. The National Yacht Club in Dun Laoghaire are the race organisers and provide the world class starting and finishing teams for the race management. The yachts can be tracked live online using the YB Live Tracking system (Yellow Brick) which can be found both through the www.d2drace.ieor through www.afloat.iefrom the start on Wednesday June 12th

Many thanks to Micheál Lynch Spar, Castlegregory, who so generously sponsored a new set of jerseys for the Ladies football team at Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory. Here he is presenting the jerseys to Principal Aodán Mac Gearailt. Also present are Kerry footballer David Clifford and the U16.5 Ladies Munster Champions.

News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta Comhgháirdeas to our neighbours in Cumann Caide na Gaeltachta for their super successful hosting of Comórtas Peile over the Bank Holiday Weekend. Not only was the organisation top class but to crown it all by winning the Senior Men’s Final made it a perfect weekend; Well done also to CLG Daingean Uí Chúis who narrowly lost a hard-fought semi-final in pretty tough weather conditions. Many of our members from both Clubs were involved over the weekend and we rejoice in their success. Get into Golf Our Get into Golf programmes are now well under way and very successful too with a total attendance of 28 Ladies involved – 19 from last year’s programme and 9 new joiners this year. In the Mens’ Programme, we have 9 very enthusiastic participants benefitting from Cormac’s top class tuition – a great start to what we hope will be a very enjoyable experience in Golf. Inter Club Competitions To date this has not been a great year for our teams in Inter Club competitions. This week, our Ladies Revive/Active team lost narrowly to NewcastleWest while our Mens’ teams lost in the Pierce Purcell, Jimmy Bruen and Cashman Trophy events. It is most unusual that Ceann Sibéal did not progress through a few rounds but for both sexes, we have the Irish Mixed Foursomes to look forward to with a number of strong candidates available for selection. The first round is on Saturday June 15th in Dooks GC – we wish them well.

O Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Dea scéalta ar fad atá agam an tseachtain seo. Ar an Domhnach bhuaidh

Cumann Caide Ban Chorca Dhuibhne Cluiche Ceannais Idirmheánach na mBan agus ar an Luan bhuaidh an Ghaeltacht ar Chill Chárthaigh ó

dTír Chonaill le pointe amháin i mbabtha ceannais do Chomórtas Peile na Gaeltachta. Is i ndeireadh thiar a chuir na buachaillí seo againne a gclipí amach. Bhí cosúlacht ar an scéal go mbeadh an lá le buachaillí An TuaiscirtBhí ár gcroí inár mbéal againn ach tháinigh pointe breá i gcabhair agus bhí na fóirne cothrom i gcabhair orainn agus bhí na fóirne cothram. ‘In ainm Dé cad a dhéanfaimíd’, arsa bean in aice liom. ‘Bí ag baisteachán ar an réitéoir, nó abair paidir a dúirt léi. Bhí an fotharga fós ann go bhfuair Séamus Ó Muircheartaigh an chaid tamall maith amach agus bhuail an polla agus thar an dtreasnán. Ó Thuaidh. Buaileadh amach an chaid agus cad é a dhuine bhí Corn Delap buaite ag an nGaeltacht. Ní raibh An Muircheartach ag imirt ó thosach ach thug sé taispeáinteas, ní pointe na bua ach trí cinn. Beidh sé in eachtraithe na laoch. Stop na mionnaí móra agus an bhaisteachán. Bhí an lá leo. 0 -12 v 0 -11 an scór. Níl aon amhras ach go raibh crua choimhlint in aghaidh an Daingin. Bhí sean- chúiseanna is dócha a caithfí a chur siar síos ar an bhfoireann eile. Bíonn raitheannach á baint as scata imreóirí nuair a bhuaileann an dá fhoireann seo le chéile. Bhí an- chaid ann, tuairteana, gualaí, buillí corcoisí agus achrann beag. Tuigeadh do scata ná beadh aon nath acu Cill Chárthaigh a threascairt nuair a bhí an Daingean claoite acu. Ar a tharrac a bhí a shábhail acu. Bhuadh Cill Chárthaigh craobh sinsir caide Thír Conaill cúpla bliain ó shin. Is ceart a rá go raibh cead ag Brian Ó Beaglaoí agus Tomás Ó Sé leath uair caide a imirt don nGaeltacht. Is ó bhainistíocht fhoireann sinsir Chiarraí a tháinig san is dócha. Bhí an bheirt acu go diail. Ba dheacair aon duine a cháineadh ar an bhfoireann seo againne ach a mhalairt, iad a mholadh. Bhíodar tofa. Bhí misneach agus teacht aniar ag sileadh leo Leanfaidh ceiliúradh go headartha aríst agus aríst eile. Ceiliúradh an 50 bliain ó bunaíodh Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta i nGaoth Dóbair, i nGallaras. Bhí Uachtarán CLG agus scata eile do mhuintir lách CLG i láthair, agus bunathóirí an Chomórtais mar Toní Bairéad duine dos na bunathóirí, lán do cheol. Tá an Iústís Seán Delap a bhronn an Corn agus Feardorcha Ó Colla bunathóir ar shleasa na síorrachta. Beannacht Dé leo agus leis an gCeannfort Seán Ó Colmáin. Bhí litir chneasta óna bhean chéille atá 99 bliain d’aois. ‘Sé Tommaí Jim a sheol an Comórtas oíche Dé hAoine agus tá gach seans go ngairmfear, Pairc Tommy Jim ar an bPáirc nua. Is mó lá agus oíche a chaith sé ag obair le páirc bhreá eile a bheith ag pobal na Gaeltachta seo againne. Ó, bhí cabhair aige, bail Ó Dhia ortha, ach thóg Tommí é seo ar bord agus caithfí an gníomh a dhéanamh go slachtmhar. Caithfear tagairt láidir a dhéanamh don gcoiste áitiúil ag tosnú leis ann gCathaoirleach Séan Ó Catháin a dhein a chúram go seiftithe. Tomás ó Crualaíoch a dhein cion gaiscígh ag obair ar a ríomhaire agus a ghuthán de ló agus d’oíche. Bhí daoine deasa eile idir mhná agus fhearaibh a bhí thar barr ina gcuid saothair le dreacht na maitheasa aa bheith ar an bhFéile. Cailín Ó Ghaoth Dóbair Joeanne Ní Cheallaigh a bhuaidh an Gradam Cailín na Féile. Bhí an- sport ag scata sa phuball breá oíche Dé Sathairn. Táimíd go léir buíoch dár laochra. BUÍOCHAS Ó CHROÍ On the 25th November 2018, 147 tractors from all over the county travelled in convoy around the highways and byways of West Kerry in aid of the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association and Gairdin Mhuire Day Care Centre, Dingle. The run raised almost €44,000, a humbling amount of money, far exceeding all expectations of the organising committee. €21,000 each was transferred to Gairdín Mhuire and ILFA and the remainder of the proceeds were given to Kerry Cancer Care and Dingle Men’s Shed. The day could not have run smoothly and so successfully without the input and help of so many. In particular, we would like to thank An Garda Siochána, the Dingle Chamber of Commerce, the Kerry Coast and Cliff Rescue, Dingle Harbourmasters Office, Kerry County Council, the management

and staff at the Marina Inn, all the voluntary stewards and medical staff along the route and the many journalists and photographers who gave so much air time, column inches and social media exposure to the event. Initially, we had hoped to publish a list of all contributors as a means of acknowledgement following the tractor run. However, we did not anticipate the incredible level of help and support the tractor run would attract nor the hundreds and hundreds of donations that were made by businesses, families and individuals from all over the country in aid of the chosen charities. While there are no words that can truly express our gratitude, Coiste Mórchuaird Tarracóra Chorca Dhuibhne hope that each and every person who lent their time, expertise, talents, help and financial support to make the event so successful, will accept our absolute heartfelt thanks.

Comhgairdeas ó chroí le Cumann Caide na Gaeltachta agus muintir na háite as deireadh seachtaine den scoth a reachtáil agus an bua iontach, drámatúil i gComórtas Peile 2019. Bhí an-áthas orainn bheith ina gcuideachta ar seastán ESB Networks, áit a raibh eolas ar fáil maidir le panéil gréine, fuinnimh inathnuaite, iasachtaí glas ón gComhar Chreidmheasa, caranna leictreach / hibrideach ó Kellihers Motors srl. Don aos óg, bhí an tóir ar na ciorcaid fuinnimh glas a bhí againn agus cinnte bhí roinnt mhaith innealtóirí fuinnimh óige inár measc a bhain an-shásamh as na gcioraid. Míle buíochas don foireann ón gCoiste Timpeallacht, PCD a bhí linn don deireadh seachtain agus a dhein an-jab na ciorcaid a léiriú.

The Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub is a Community Enterprise supported by Enterprise Ireland, the Dept of Rural and Community Development through the Town and Village Renewal Scheme, eir, Údarás na Gaeltachta, Kerry Co Co and the Dingle Chamber Alliance.

We’re in planning mode again for future sessions of Coder Dojo and would like to welcome those of you interested in volunteering as mentors. It’s important to note that you do not need to be a programmer to mentor at a Dojo! A lot of mentors are attendees' parents who have no technical experience at all when they start but can pick up some knowledge and tips along the way. Having mentors with different skills, backgrounds, and levels of knowledge who provide support and encouragement to CoderDojo youth (Ninjas) is of the best benefit to the club. Dingle Coder Dojo runs twice annually for six week sessions in Spring and again in Autumn. The time commitment is typically from 1 to 3 hours per week in the run up to, and during, the sessions. If you would like to be involved then please contact Deirdre at info@dinglehub.com to find out more. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1GB of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more.

The Late Margaret Kennedy: Míle Buíochas The family of the late Margaret Kennedy of Ballinacourty, Annascaul wishes to acknowledge the many expressions of sympathy and gestures of kindness shown to us following our sad loss. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the many friends, neighbours and well wishers who visited our home, attended the wake, mass and burial and who provided emotional and practical support for us at this difficult time. For those who telephoned, travelled long distances, sent floral tributes, cards and messages of condolence, we are truly grateful. A special word of thanks to the management, nurses and staff of West Kerry Community Hospital for their kindness and respect shown at all times; to Fr. Jerry Keane, Fr. Jim Sheehy and Fr. Joe Begley; and finally Donal of O'Connors Undrtakers for his sensitive and professional handling of the arrangements. The holy sacrifice of the mass will be offered for your intentions. 32 West Kerry Live

Áiseanna na hÓige, the purpose-built childcare facility in the Ard na Gréine estate in Dingle was built in 2006. It is owned by Coiste Áiseanna na hÓige CTR, a community-based company which operated a childcare and Montessori business in the building until it closed during the economic downturn.

Is ionad cúraim leanaí é Áiseanna na hÓige a bhí tógtha don fheidhm sin san eastát Ard na Gréine sa Daingean. Is é Coiste Áiseanna na hÓige CTR an comhlacht pobalbhunaithe, a bhíodh ag reáchtáil gnó cúram leanaí agus Montessori ann, úinéir an fhoirgnimh. Dúnadh an gnó sin le linn an chúlaithe eacnamaíochta.

With the assistance of Údarás na Gaeltachta in reopening the childcare rooms an invitation was extended to Gemma Durrant to move her Mol an Óige Montessori and Childcare Service to Áiseanna na hÓige in 2013.

Le cúnamh Údarás na Gaeltachta osclaíodh na seomraí cúraim leanaí arís i 2013 nuair a thugadh cuireadh do Gemma Durrant a gnó cúram leanaí agus Montessori, Mol an Óige a bhogadh go hÁiseanna na hÓige.

Since then the Áiseanna na hÓige board as well as everyone who works in the centre have been working the develop the services provided. In addition to the crèche, Montessori and Naíonra the building now hosts a Tús Maith playgroup, community groups and support services for children. There has also been development in the services provided directly by Coiste Áiseanna na hÓige CTR. We operate the Lúibín na Gréine afterschool service and since 2015 we have employed a part-time family support worker funded by Tusla – the Child and Family Agency. Lots of communities in the country are served by a Family Resource Centre, which serves as a space for community-based activities as well as providing family support services. There are centres such as these in Tralee, Castlemaine, Killorglin and other towns in Kerry. These are sometimes co-located with a childcare facility. These centres are funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, and cooperate with Tusla on family and community support measures. Until now there has been no such centre serving west Kerry, however last year Tusla confirmed that they would fund a full-time position with the aim of developing a Family Resource Centre in Áiseanna na hÓige. The Family Resource Centre Manager will lead the development of the centre to provide a full suite of family support services. They will supervise our own staff, the Family Support Worker and the Head of After-School Services and co-operate with other services running in the centre. Mol an Óige and Naíonra an Daingin will continue to run their sevices independently. Coiste Áiseanna na hÓige advertised recently to fill this new role. As the position has not been filled it is now being readvertised. We are also advertising a separate vacancy for a Head of After-School Services to run the Lúibín na Gréine After-School Service. Further information can be found at aiseannanahoige.ie.

Tá Coiste Áiseanna na hÓige ag lorg iarratas chun an dá folúntas seo a líonadh: BAINISTEOIR AN IONAID ACMHAINNE TEAGHLAIGH Lánaimseartha buan

Ó shin, tá bord Áiseanna na hÓige chomh maith le gach duine atá ag obair san ionad tar éis a bheith ag obair ar fhorbairt na seirbhísí atá ann. Chomh maith leis an seirbhís cúraim leanaí, Montessori agus Naíonra, bíonn idir ghrúpaí súgartha, ghrúpaí pobal agus sheirbhísí do leanaí ag baint leasa as an bhfoirgneamh. Tá forbairt tagtha ar na seirbhísí a bhfuil á reáchtáil ag Coiste Áiseanna na hÓige CTR féin leis. Tá an tSeirbhís Tar Éis Scoile, Lúibín na Gréine á rith againn agus tá Oibrí Tacaíochta Teaghlaigh páirtaimseartha fostaithe againn ó 2015 le maoiniú ó Tusla – an Ghníomhaireacht um Leanaí agus an Teaghlach. In a lán ceantar timpeall na tíre bíonn Ionad Acmhainne Teaghlaigh ann, a chuireann spás ar fáil do gníomhaíochtaí pobal-bhunaithe chomh maith le seirbhísí tacaíochta teaghlaigh. Tá ionaid cosúil leis seo i dTrá Lí, Caisleán na Mainge, Cill Orglan agus bailte eile i gCiarraí. Is minic a bhíonn na h-ionaid seo ar aon áitreabh le h-ionad cúram leanaí. Bíonn na h-ionad seo maoinithe ag an Roinn Leanaí agus Gnóthaí Óige agus bíonn siad ag comh-oibriú le Tusla ar thacaíochtaí clainne agus pobal. Go dtí seo, ní raibh a leithead d’ionad ag freastal ar Chiarraí Thiar. Anuraidh chuir Tusla in iúil dúinn go mbeidh sé ar a gcumas post lánaimseartha a mhaoiniú in Áiseanna na hÓige, agus Ionad Acmhainne Teaghlaigh a fhorbairt ann mar aidhm. Beidh Bainisteoir an Ionaid Acmhainne Teaghlaigh ag déanamh ceannródaíocht ar fhorbairt an ionaid agus réimse leathan seirbhísí tacaíochta teaghlaigh a chur ar fáil ann. Beidh an té seo i bhfeighil ar ár bhfoireann, an Oibrí Tacaíochta Teaghlaigh agus Ceannasaí na Seirbhísí Tar Éis Scoile san áireamh. Beidh an té seo ag comhoibriú le seirbhísí eile atá ag feidhmiú san ionad leis. Beidh Mol an Óige agus Naíonra an Daingin ag leanúint ar aghaidh lena seirbhísí féin a reáchtáil go neamhspleách. Dhein Coiste Áiseanna na hÓige an post nua seo a fhógairt le déanaí. Toisc nár líonadh an post tá sé á athfhógairt anois. Neamhspleách ar sin táimid ag fógairt folúntais do Cheannasaí na Seirbhísí Tar Éis Scoile páirtaimseartha a bheidh i bhfeighil ar Lúibín na Gréine. Is féidir a thuilleadh eolas a fháil ó aiseannanahoige.ie.

Cumann Peile Ban Daingean Uí Chúis a bhuaigh Cluiche Ceannais Sóisear na mBan i gComórtas Murphy and Tommy Doyle Peile na Gaeltachta 2019 What a wonderful night organised by Camp Community Council last Saturday 1st June to honour two of their great Camp heroes Dr. Seán Murphy and Tommy Doyle. 'An Evening with the Legends' was just that and with Tim Moynihan guiding the night we were brought on a great journey of life both on and off the field of play down through the years. Between Dr. Seán Murphy and Tommy Doyle they brought 10 All-Ireland Senior Medals back to Camp but first and foremost it was the honour of representing their own Camp Community that held pride of place for these two mighty men. Well done to everyone in Camp Community Council for organising and thank you to Dr. Seán Murphy and Tommy Doyle for their great service to their own community and the GAA community. Laochra Gael!

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor EVENING WITH THE LEGENDS An evening with the Legends held on Sunday night in Camp Sports Hall was a huge success and a wonderful night enjoyed by a large gathering of the community, GAA families and friends ! And all came to pay tribute to Dr. Sean Murphy and Tommy Doyle, the last two surviving All Ireland Senior Football medallists from Camp. And we were greatly honoured too to have West Kerry native and GAA broadcasting legend Michael Ó Muircheartaigh partaking in the panel discussion on stage with our legends, Dr. Sean and Tommy and All Ireland winning footballers Charlie Nelligan and John Kennedy. Tim Moynihan MC did a superb job and you could hear a pin drop in the hall as stories and anecdotes of on and off the field and dressing room events and adventures were recalled to an attentive and very interested audience over a two hour period ! Mick O'Dwyer was there too and Johnny Culloty and Liam Sayers and Tim Murphy, County Chairman Kerry GAA all paying tribute to Dr. Sean Murphy and Tommy Doyle.

A photographic exhibition was of great interest to everyone too, displaying photos of the unique history of Camp football from as far back as 1928, when Camp won the West Kerry League. Gabriel Curran and Paud Herlihy, two great footballers from the famous three in a row Camp winnning team 1949 - 1951 were present on the night. Camp Juniors FC: 24 Year Wait Ends U16 TUCKER KELLY Cup Final CAMP JUNIORS FC 7 - 0 Ballyhar Dynamos After 24 years of the clubs existence a first ever Kerry Cup was finally captured by CAMP JUNIORS last Thursday week when the 16s, fresh after winning the Premier title were determined to make no mistakes in front of the great crowd in from West of the Blennerville bridge. From the kick-off the intentions were declared and within a few minutes they had gone close twice with striker Maurice O'Connell' s shot saved and in-form Colman O'Meára also testing the keeper. There was a bounce in the play right through the pitch and the few early forays forward from Ballyhar were nipped fast by the defensive trio of Cian Griffin, Caolán O Connell and Alain Beaujouan.

the Semis)..in fact they dominated the opening play after the restart and had a few shots on goal but Patrick's handling was switched on, and strong defending left their task always a little too difficult. The JUNIORS got back into their groove, Cian Wright exceptional in midfield, breaking up the opposition play and driving forward. Colmán had plenty of joy on the right wing, Oisín on the left and it was that man again Maurice who headed home his 4th from a cross. Caolán, up for a corner was fastest to react and slammed a left foot shot to the net and John O'Connor was to tap in his second, CAMP's 7th after a well crafted move up the right wing. Delight all round, the journey through schoolboys soccer from way back in 2010 finished up on an evening with goals a-plenty, a clinical display, great team character and togetherness on the field and a lot of joy for the lads, coaches, parents, supporters and Club alike.

Cian Wright was presented with Player of the Match Award from Billy Dennehy (Kerry U17 League of Ireland manager) and team captain Caolán was thrilled to accept the TUCKER KELLY CUP. Celebrations all around and again it was fantastic to see so many of the young club players and parents in to support. A trip to Dingle with the cup on Saturday to meet up with John O'Connor (Kool Scoops), father of our dear team-mate Aodhán and a friendly match on Sunday afternoon with the Kerry KENNEDY CUP Squad 2019 wrapped up a very memorable journey in Schoolboys Soccer for these lads......well done boys!!!! Well done also to our GIRLS U12s who won the Division 1A title last week after an impressive 4-2 win against Killarney Celtic. You can follow CAMP JUNIORSS FC through Facebook (Facebook.com/Camp JuniorsFC) or for any further information contact the club at:campjuniorsoccerclub@gmail.com

It was no. 99, John O Connor (from Tralee) who opened the scoring after 11 minutes when he latched on to a through ball from Cian Wright, a shot of his acceleration and he was through to goal, rifling a shot to the left corner....Maurice, playing in real Diego Costa mode followed with goals soon after with a poked shot from just inside the box, then a looping header and finally a tap in from a driven cross.....he was on-fire, amusing the crowd with some classic goal celebrations......half time, 4-0 and indeed could have been more as Philipp Michel's header narrowly went wide. Playing into the wind second half and knowing that Ballyhar, maybe in shock, had the potential to come back....(this was the team that had upset the odds and beaten Park FC comprehensively in

Killorglin Tidy Towns Update Greetings from Killorglin Tidy Towns! As you are all aware, the approach roads to Killorglin are getting a much needed face lift and the ongoing road works have delayed some of Tidy Town’s projects, but we want to update you on some of our current activities! We have greatly increased the number of Bird Boxes in the town, particularly Swift boxes. Similar to Swallows in appearance, Swifts normally migrate to Ireland in early May for their Summer holidays. The swifts are an endangered species primarily because their traditional nesting areas are old buildings and under the eaves of houses. As our buildings become more draught proof, there are fewer places for Swifts to nest. Tidy Towns has worked with Kerry County Council to install Swift Nest Boxes in recently refurbished buildings, such as the ISK Secondary school, Kingdom 1795, the CYMS building and the Library building. Several private residences have also incorporated Swift Boxes into their refurbishments. The Laneway behind Cahillane’s Butchers, adjacent to The Fairfield, has had planters with native Mountain Ash trees placed in it – thanks to the sponsorship of the businesses on Upper Bridge st! You may also notice that we have installed several Water Harvesters throughout the town to gather rain water for the flower troughs – designed to help Tidy Towns to water flowers more sustainably. The national judges will be in town from mid-June and we would really appreciate if you could spare an hour or so to volunteer with Tidy Towns over the summer – we meet every Tuesday / Thursday evening from 7 til 9 pm at the monument in the Fairfield. As always, we appreciate the efforts made to keep the businesses and streets clean and cigarette butts / weeds / litter free. We are also holding an Inter-Estates competition this summer and we will update you on this in the coming weeks. Stay clean and green over the coming months!

County Junior Football League: by Dara O Connor. Group 3, Round 2 :Keel 'B' 0-11 Milltown/Castlemaine 'C' 0-5 Our third senior side made the short journey to Keel for Round 2 of the County Junior Football League. To be fair they more than held their own and having not taken two goal chances (1 in either half) it could have been far closer than the scoreboard suggests which is a credit to all involved. Mark Wren through 0-2, Eoin O'Mahony with 0-2 & Jack Dennehy with a beauty from a long distance free kept us in touch all through the encounter. Our 'B' side will take on Keel 'B' in the Mid Kerry Junior Football League on Tuesday next which should provide a more accurate measurement of where both sides are at. Silent Sidelines 'Silent Sidelines' is an initiative of the Co. Board which is to be implemented at all U12 Co. League Phase 2 games beginning this weekend. Essentially the message is that supporters are to remain silent during the game, remain outside the playing field or in a designated area for supporters and that just one lead coach interacts with the players during the game. In this way the children will have a more enjoyable experience playing the game and putting into practice want they have learned on the training field.

State Pension (Contributory) Question I will be retiring soon. I spent many years working and I have also spent time raising and caring for my family. Can I qualify for the State Pension (Contributory)? Answer The State Pension (Contributory) (SPC) is paid from the age of 66 to people who have worked and have enough social insurance contributions. Recent changes introduced a new method to calculate the rate of SPC paid to a person who reaches pension age on or after 1 September 2012. The new method can help people who have spent time out of the workforce caring to qualify for an SPC. Firstly, you must be aged 66 or over and have enough Class A, E, F,G, H, N or S social insurance contributions, you must have started to pay social insurance in Ireland before the age of 56 and you must have 520 full-rate contributions (10 years of contributions). Then, provided you reached pension age on or after 1 September 2012, you can have your contributions assessed using the new Total Contributions Approach (TCA) and can avail of a new HomeCaring Periods Scheme . The TCA counts the total number of contributions you have paid. If you have 2,080 or more contributions (40 years of employment) you will qualify for the maximum personal rate of SPC. If you have fewer than 2,080 contributions, you can use up to 1,040 Home Caring Periods (20 years) and up to 520 credited contributions (10 years), to help you qualify for an SPC. Your combined Home Caring Periods and credited contributions cannot be more than 1,040 (20 years). If you reached pension age on or after 1 September 2012, your entitlement to a pension will be calculated using both the current yearly averaging system and the new TCA calculation. If you are entitled to a SPC, the rate of pension you get will be based on whichever calculation is best for you. You can get a State Pension (Contributory) form from your local post office and your Intreo Centre or Social Welfare Branch Office. Crisp Pork Belly, Spiced Cabbage, Cider Sauce Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School A crisp pork belly is so delicious, this recipe takes a small bit of work and needs to be started two days before hand to prepare the pork. On the first day, it is salted, the next day, the salt is rinsed off it and cooked, then pressed overnight. This process is simple and only needs a few minutes over the two days, the result is worth it. However, if you are stuck for time, it can be served after you cook it rather than pressing it overnight but I would recommend trying this recipe and you will not be disappointed. If you want a tasty starter serve some of this pork with some scallops. Serves 4 Ingredients for the pork belly 500g pork belly 50g of coarse salt 2 onions, peeled and cut into large dice 2 carrots, peeled and roughly diced 2 celery sticks, washed and roughly diced 1 bulb of garlic, cut in half

Method to prepare the pork belly Score the fat by running the knife over it. Rub the salt all over the pork belly and leave this in a fridge overnight. The next day rinse the salt off the pork and then dry it off. to cook the pork Heat the oven to 150ºC. Put all of the vegetables, thyme and star anise on a roasting tray, place the pork belly on top, add the cider. Cover the tray with parchment and then tinfoil. Place this in the oven for about 4 hours.

½ head of savoy cabbage, washed and finely shredded

½ tsp. cumin seeds

Add the cabbage to a pot of boiling salted water. Cook this for about 2 minutes. Strain off the cabbage and add the butter and spices to the pot. Allow this to cook for about 2-3 minutes. Add the cabbage and season. Stir this and cook for about 2 minutes.
