There is still much work to be completed on labelling and re-arranging of displays, as well as incorporating new material in these. We ask for your patience during the completion of the work. We also have a plan for a further and exciting new exhibition space formerly used for temporary and travelling exhibitions. We welcome your comments on the new exhibition and we encourage you to mention the museum to any visitors to the area, as a place to learn more about the many and noted archaeological sites and the local history of the Dingle Peninsula. Tá dearadh nua ar an taispeántas, agus tá súil againn go dtaitneoidh sé libh agus go mbainfidh sibh taitneamh agus sásamh as cuairt a thabhairt air. Is iad na hiarsmaí bun agus barr an mhúsaeim, dar ndóigh agus níl aon athrú mór tagtha orthusan. Tá obair fós le déanamh ar mhórán eile agus beidh tamall eile ann sara gcuirfear deireadh leis na forbairtí. Fáilte roim mhuintir na háite agus roimis ár gcuairteoirí isteach sa Mhúsaem.

Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 23rd July when the feature will be the comedy drama Papi Chulo. The film tells the story of Sean, a solitary and alienated television weatherman. One day he drives past a middle-aged Latino migrant worker standing outside a hardware store looking for work. He decides to hire this kindlooking man, to be his friend, in this darkly comedic reflection on class, ethnicity, and companionship in contemporary Los Angeles. Sean is young, gay and white; Ernesto, portly, straight and married. Despite having nothing in common and the language barrier, they build a sort of friendship, until Sean becomes consumed with a deeper obsessive need. The following week on Tuesday 30th the feature will be the Danny Boyle directed romantic comedy Yesterday. Set in Lowestoft UK, Jack Malik is a frustrated musician whose musical career is going nowhere despite the faith that his friend/manager Ellie has in him. However, on the night Jack decides to give up, the whole world is momentarily hit with a massive blackout during which Jack is hit by a bus. Upon regaining consciousness, Jack learns to his astonishment that he is apparently now the only one who knows the music of the Beatles. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes Richie Williams HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The second in a series of Summer Lectures organised by the Dingle Historical Society will be held on Tuesday July 30th at 8p.m. in the Skellig Hotel. The theme is The Mass Rock in Irish History by Dr David Fleming University of Limerick. ROTARY. Sí Áine Ní Dhubhláine an Uachtaran nua ceaphta ag Cumann Rotary Daingean Ui Chuise. Áine is a very popular choice among the Rotary members who work behind the scenes raising funds for local and national worthy causes.

Dingle Historical Society presents

The Mass Rock in Irish History: Myths and Realities An illustrated lecture by Dr David Fleming, Department of History, University of Limerick Lecture venue: Dingle Skellig Hotel, Dingle. Date: Tuesday, 30th July, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh cách - Visitors welcome

SHOW. The 54th Annual West Kerry Agricultural Show will be held in the Mart Grounds on this Sunday July 21st starting at 1.30p.m.. The Show is always a great day out with competitions, exhibitions and side shows of all sorts aimed at both rural and urban life. The task of judging the best dressed lady and gent at the show will fall to a local sports personality this year so get that special hat or coat ready in time.

The 'mass rock' is synonymous with our views of eighteenth-century Ireland and 'penal times', evoking images of a hidden and persecuted Catholic priest and his parishioners, but how much do we actually know about them. For several years Dr Fleming has been trawling through contemporary material and modern evidence to trace the story of the mass rock, and reveals a much more nuanced picture of the Irish mass rock.

SUMMER CAMPS. The Annual Dingle GAA Summer Camp catering for ages 5 to 12 years will be held in Pairc An Aghasaigh from July 22nd to 26th and prior booking is recommended at 08776338124.

Dr David Fleming is a lecturer in history at the University of Limerick and Course Director of the MA in Local History. He has published widely on the social and political history of eighteenth-century Ireland.

The Sailing Club and Surf Club Camps continue weekly with prior booking essential to ensure a preferred time and date. Aiseanna na hOige are also organising camps for primary school children catering for arts and crafts, baking and games during the week July 22nd to 26th with booking at 0899787608. PAROCHIAL CHANGES. Fr JOE BEGLEY who has been Parish Priest in Dingle for the past 4 years has this week moved to be Parish Priest in Glengariff. Fr Joe has been involved in a good number of developments in various churches and properties under church control over the past few years with the reroofing and refurbishment of Ventry Church being of particular satisfaction to him. The large group of parishioners who attended his farewell mass and party in Dingle on Monday evening showed how well Fr Joe was liked in the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area. Go neirí leis sa pharoiste nua i nGleann Garaff Co Corcai !!. We welcome Fr Michael Moynihan the newly appointed Parish Priest to Corca Dhuibhne who comes west in a direct swop from Glengariff Parish. The breathren at the rear of the church in their chat prior to mass are hoping that the sermons will be as short as has been the norm over the past few years!!!. TIDY TOWNS. The extremely dry few months past have put a huge strain on the workload as the flower tubs /beds need watering every 3 to 4 days now. We would appreciate the support of residents to look after the tubs/ beds in their own areas to reduce the requirement to transport water in our vehicles around every street in town. We have taken advantage of the reduced level in the Mall River to clear up some of the overgrowth and unsightly sluss which has built up there recently.

Tuesday, 13th August, 8.00pm The Great Famine in the Dingle Peninsula 1845-1851 An illustrated lecture by Dr Conor Brosnan Tuesday, 27th August, 8.00pm The Best Government Ever - the local angle on the making of David Lean's 'Ryan's Daughter' on the Dingle Peninsula in 1968/69. An illustrated lecture by Mícheál de Mórdha, journalist and author Tuesday, 3rd September, 8.00pm Medieval Pilgrims from Ireland to Santiago de Compostela An illustrated lecture by Bernadette Cunningham, Deputy Librarian, Royal Irish Academy

NATIONAL FARM SAFETY AWARENESS WEEK

Make sure no person is in or near the building

This week is Farm Safety Week, ending on Friday, but this should not be an end of the initiative, or vigilance. Farm safety is on-going and never ends as all workplace safety issues. This initiative along with others such as the recent HSA Farm Safety campaign at the end of April which focused on the safe use of tractors and machinery, are very important in increasing awareness of the unacceptable level of farm accidents that occur every year within our industry and the need for continual awareness of farm safety. It is important to remember that farms are both work places and family homes and it is important that the whole family is alert to the risks that exist on farms. Great care is required to ensure that tragic accidents do not occur. One of the first steps in helping to achieve a safe farm is for farmers to adhere to the Farm Safety Code of practice and to review their Farm Risk Assessment.

Open all doors and outlets to provide a draught

At least two people should be present and stand up wind

Never stand over slats or near tank access points when agitation is in progress

Avoid vigorous agitation in confined places

Keep all people away from the agitation point for at least 30 minutes after starting agitation

Never enter or allow others to enter the any tank or confined place without breathing apparatus

Agitation points should be placed outside the building

While there are many risks in farming, farming does not have to be a dangerous occupation. Behavioural change is what is required to prevent many accidents. It is a case of being aware of the dangers and taking the time to do what is necessary to minimise the risk. There are plenty of ways to reduce the danger, without spending huge money. The first of these is to complete a Farm Risk Assessment. It is important that all farming organisations encourage farmers to change their behaviours in relation to farm safety. To date this year there has been 12 fatal farm accidents on Irish farms. These 12 fatal farm accidents account for over forty percent of all fatal work accidents so far in 2019, while farming accounts for less than 6 percent of the workforce. No individual action or organisation that can solve this difficult problem that impacts so negatively on so many lives each year. We must all work together with the single goal of preventing farm accidents and therefore saving lives and minimising serious injuries. Farmers need to be reminded to think “am I doing enough” to ensure there are no accidents on their own farm – it is through farmers taking individual action that the number of farm accidents will be reduced. Farm safety is an ongoing issue and in is important that farmers think Safety First in all the tasks they perform, no matter the pressure. ‘I would like to commend the IFA and urge all farmers to fully embrace safe farming systems, the Minister added. FARM SAFETY The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005, places a legal duty on employers to prepare and work to a safety statement, However, farmers with 3 or less employees will be able to fulfil their statutory duty under the 2005 Act. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005, places a legal duty on employers to prepare and work to a safety statement, However, farmers with 3 or less employees will be able to fulfil their statutory duty under the 2005 Act simply by completing a Risk Assessment Document. At the end of 2006, some 160,000 copies of the HSA Agriculture Code of Practice were issued to farmers. The Code of Practice consists of three documents: 1.

Code of Practice for Preventing Injury and Occupational Ill Health in Agriculture

2.

Risk Assessment Document

3.

Safe System of Work Plan

This system allows farmers to complete their farm safety statements on-line in a user-friendly fashion. By using this system, farmers can keep their risk assessment statements up to date. Further details are available from the Health and Safety Authority Legal Page, Teagasc Legal Page or The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. With regard to slurry, drowning is by far the most common cause of death involving slurry. Take the following precautions to protect against drowning in slurry: •

Open slurry tanks should be protected by an unclimbable fence or wall at least 1.8m high with locked gates.

• Covered or slatted tanks require access manholes that children cannot open. A safety grid should be fitted below the manhole to give secondary protection. 10 West Kerry Live

NO EFFORT TO BE SPARED TO PROTECT FARMERS FROM MERCOSUR IMPACTS According to The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, TD, no effort is to be spared in protecting Irish and European beef producers to the maximum possible extent from the potential negative impacts of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement during the process of finalisation of legal texts that will now follow the recent political agreement. Attention is drawn to potentially damaging impact of this EU-Mercosur agreement on the EU beef market and this is further overshadowed by the negative threat(s) of Brexit Irish beef farmers have shown that they do not fear free trade agreements, but they also want to see fair trade agreements. Many occasions about the potential impact of a Mercosur agreement have been recently highlighted and it is essential that Phil Hogan EU Commissioner for Agriculture uses the time allocated for debate to include as many protections as possible in areas such as food safety and animal welfare standards, quota segmentation and sustainability commitments. JAPANESE MARKET OPENS TO IRISH SHEEPMEAT Good news for Sheep producers around the country, Ireland has secured access to the Japanese market for sheepmeat. Irish sheepmeat access has been secured to Japan and agreed in principle during the recent Trade Mission to Tokyo last month and The Japanese authorities have now formally agreed the export verification programme and export certificate as proposed. Today’s announcement reflects the ongoing focused effort by DAFM to open and enhance market access to key markets. We now have access for both beef and sheepmeat exports to Japan, a strong endorsement of Ireland food safety and quality credentials, and of our excellent working relationships, both at Government and official level. With a strong EU Japan Economic Partnership Agreement in place, not to mention the upcoming Rugby World Cup, there will be significant opportunities to promote Irish food and drink in the Japanese market.” Total agri-food exports to Japan in 2018 amounted to €115 million, double the level of exports in 2016, according to CSO trade statistics (which include non-edible exports such as forestry as well as food and drinks). Last year, pigmeat exports to Japan amounted to €41 million; while dairy products, mainly cheddar cheese, amounted to €40 million. Fish (€14 million) and beverages (€8 million) are other important export categories. Beef exports to Japan amounted to €3.6 million last year. SOMETINNG FOR BEE KEEPERS & LOVERS - NATIONAL APICULTURE PROGRAMME 2019-2022 The introduction of the next National Apiculture Programme was recently launched which will run for the next three years to 2022. This Programme, which supports research into production standards. EU support for beekeeping is provided through the national apiculture programmes which aim through approved applied research projects to improve the general conditions for the production of honey and other apiculture products in the EU. Ireland has secured funding through this initiative for a further three year National Apiculture Programme. This programme which is co-funded by the EU commission will provide funding of up to €90,000 (€270,000 in total) per annum for the duration of the three year programme.

The current National Apiculture Programme which received funding of €217,985 over the last three years will expire at the end of this month. In light of this, researchers are invited to submit proposals for the new National Apiculture Programme which will run from the 1st August 2019 until the 31 July 2022. The aim of the programme is to: •

To provide technical assistance to beekeepers

Combat beehive invaders and diseases, particularly varroasis

To co-operate with specialist bodies for the implementation of applied research programmes in the field of beekeeping and apiculture products

All suitable bodies that can demonstrate the necessary research capabilities, including Universities, Institutes of Technology and Teagasc, are eligible to submit proposals. Projects that involve collaboration between institutions and/or involve the development of critical mass are encouraged.

Prebiotics, Probiotics? What’s the Difference? Irene Ní Fhlannúra Just when we have our head around something new, the health experts add another layer of information which can throw us right back at ground zero. This can be said about the probiotic and prebiotic conundrum! Microorganisms that inhabit the human body, on the skin, in the gut, in the mouth, behind the ears, up the bum, just about everywhere - outnumber all other human cells by about 10 to 1. Because of their tiny size they only amount to about 3 percent of our total body mass, roughly 2kg for the average adult. Despite being miniscule, they contribute to the health status of every part of the body either directly or indirectly through their activity, so much so that the collective microbiome is increasingly viewed by scientists as an organ in its own right. According to research from the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) in 2014, which is a collaborative research project involving more than 80 universities and scientific institutions from around the globe, there are more than 10,000 different species living inside us. This is the first time that researchers have mapped the quantity and species of microorganisms inhabiting the bodies of healthy humans. According to HMP Co-ordinator, James M. Anderson, M.D., Ph.D “We now have a very good idea of what is normal for a healthy Western population and are beginning to learn how changes in the microbiome correlate with physiology and disease.” The application of this research will be far-reaching – now that we understand what the normal human microbiome looks like, we should be able to understand how changes in the microbiome are associated with, or even cause, illnesses. Probiotics is the collective term of beneficial bacteria within the human microbiome. In the gut, they break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates in our diet into nutrients that we can then absorb. They can produce valuable substances such as certain vitamins and anti-inflammatories that our body cannot produce. They are as important to us as we are to them for survival, yet as their host, we have underestimated their significance and treated them badly. Our modern diet and lifestyle is a challenge for these bacteria, from the overuse of disinfectants and antibiotics to junk food and stress, while we would like them to come live with us, we do very little to make them feel welcome!

Other prebiotic foods include beans and legumes, flaxseeds, burdock root, wheat bran and seaweeds. Sauerkraut is a perfect example of the relationship between probiotics and prebiotics. The juice from shredded or bruised raw cabbage leaves provide the prebiotic fibre for Lactobacilli bacteria (found on raw cabbage leaves) to multiply and flourish. As they increased in number, they continue digesting the cabbage leaves until the leaves are completely fermented. At the end of the process the volume of beneficial bacteria present is enough to preserve the sauerkraut and keep away harmful bacteria that would otherwise spoil it. This was the one of the original methods of preserving food and provided humans with a great source of probiotics as a bonus. The Human Microbiome Project is ongoing and will provide invaluable preventative measures and treatment options for disease in years to come. In the meantime, roll out the red carpet and invite probiotics in, make them feel welcome and feed them regularly – treat them well and they will look after you! This is where prebiotics come in to play. Prebiotics are a type of fibre from carbohydrates that many species of beneficial bacteria rely on for nourishment and survival. It is impossible to have a healthy colony of probiotics in your gut if you do not feed them. Prebiotics have become a bit of a buzz word, the new health supplement, but in reality, prebiotics are plant fibres we do not digest, which end up in the colon as dinner for the trillions of probiotics including bifidobacteria and the lactobacillus family. Growing an effective army of probiotics within your microbiome means feeding them and encouraging them to stay. The greater the welcome, the greater the number and diversity of bacteria which ultimately means greater health for you!

Summer Has Arrived @ 13bandon Dingle

Not all fibre is equal when it comes to prebiotics. Researchers have identified the ideal menu and it is random and for many of us, not quite what we would like to eat! Inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), betaglucans, resistant starch and pectin are just some of the fibres that send probiotics into seventh heaven! Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, dandelion leaves are the richest sources of inulin, followed by garlic, onion and leeks. These are known to increase the number and variety of beneficial bacteria in the gut. Oats and barley provide betaglucans which also increase numbers and variety of bacteria. Betaglucans have also been shown to have an anti-viral effect in the upper respiratory tract and are successfully used as a treatment for colds and flu viruses. Perhaps the boost to our own bacteria is the real weapon against these viral attacks. Probiotics use pectin, found in apples, to produce a short chain fatty acid called butyric acid which improves the health of the intestinal lining in which they reside. These short chain fatty acids also help regulate electrolyte balance including sodium, magnesium, calcium and water levels. They are anti-inflammatory compounds and are involved proper digestion and bowel movements.

Narrow escape from drowning.

Edited By Ted Creedon

Two men named Sheehy narrowly escaped being drowned on Sunday morning at Cromane, near Killorglin. They were pulling a small skiff, which capsized and both were thrown into the water. They had to swim over eighty yards [73 metres] to the shore, and were in an exhausted condition when they landed.

Five drowned in Blasket Sound From – Freeman’s Journal, 27 March, 1878. Intelligence has been received in Tralee this evening of a boat accident which occurred in the Blasket Sound, the coast off the west of Dingle, which has resulted in the loss of five lives. The facts are as follows:- On the rocks and in the ground in the immediate vicinity of the Blasket Islands seaweed grows in great abundance, and boatmen and farmers from the mainland have been in the habit of cutting it in spring tides and bringing it across the sound in boats for manuring potatoes. The Blasket Sound is one of the most dangerous places for boatmen and mariners on the coast of Ireland. It appears that several boats had put off as usual, and on their return, being heavily laden with the seaweed, one of them was lost and five of the crew were consigned to the deep, and met a watery grave. Two more of the crew were saved by a canoe which put off from the mainland to their assistance at the imminent peril of her crew. The names of those lost were: - Patrick Connor, a single man aged about 22 years, John Denis Houlihan, aged about 26, who has left a wife, three young helpless children and an aged mother to mourn his loss. Maurice Kennedy, a single man aged 28; Patrick Long, a lad of some 18 years of age and James Sheehy, who has left a wife, three young children, and an aged father to mourn his untimely death. Those saved are John Ashe and John Kennedy. None of the bodies have yet been found.

Cattle driven over a cliff From – Kerry Evening Post, 5 August, 1914. On Sunday morning last, 17 head of cattle, the property of Mr. Michael T. Moriarty, Dingle, were, as alleged, driven over the cliffs at Ballymore, Dingle. Five were killed, and the remainder rescued. It appears there is some dispute over land.

Wreck near Dingle. From – Cork Constitution, 30 March, 1891. During the gale on Friday morning the brigantine Jane Herbert with a cargo of 300 tons of coal, dragged her anchor in Dingle Bay, and drifting on the rocks became a total wreck. The crew, consisting of the master, three men and a boy got safely ashore.

Post office for Dunquin. From – Kerry Evening Post, 1 February, 1899. A post office has been established at Dunquin, beyond Dingle, known as the “nearest parish to America.” From Dunquin there will be a weekly service to the Great Blasket Island, and a monthly service to the Island of Inniscoughlien [???].

It is supposed that she hailed from Italy, Portugal or Spain. None of the bodies have been washed ashore, but one body was seen floating on the surface, and owing to heavy surf on the beach it could not be secured. The logbook and all her papers are in the possesion [sic] of Captain Hickson, J. P. who lives in the immediate vicinity of the scene of the wreck. Everything of any value is secured on the strand, such as spars, sails, the men’s chests etc. She broke up in three pieces and it is supposed by the size of her spars and sails that she was either a large barque or ship of some 700 tons burden.

Fishermen lost in Tralee Bay From – Kerry Evening Post, 22 April, 1896. On Saturday evening Dr. Hayes, Coroner, held an inquest on the bodies which drifted ashore at Fenit and Barrow the previous day, being two of the four men washed overboard from the fishing smack Quickstep, of Peel, and drowned at the entrance to Tralee Bay just a month since. Two men and a boy got safely into Fenit in the wrecked boat. The jury found a verdict of accidental drowning. The funeral took place on Sunday afternoon and was largely attended. The coastguards and naval-reserve men of the district marched after the coffin while the crews of the large fleet of fishing boats in the harbour, to the number of five or six hundred, followed. The internment took place in the ancient churchyard at Churchill.

From – Kerry Evening Post, 17 July, 1847. Three men – one married – were drowned at Ferriter’s Cove, about seven miles west of Dingle on the 15th instant. These poor fellows were engaged in Connor-fishing off the rocks at the Castle Point when swept off by the swell. It appears they had been placed by boat in their position under the cliffs, and before it returned for them the tide had risen and having lost heir strength through want they were unable to hold on against the swell. Two of the bodies have been found. Several poor persons have, within the past year, lost their lives while Connor-fishing under the cliffs about Dingle; to which dangerous employment the destitution of the district has

To the Air of Johnson's Motorcar 1920’s

In all my years in Chapel Lane, what's going on by cripes?

Chorus

Winding down the window, I shout “I think I've lost my way”

When on my way to Dingle, had not been there for a while

He said “it’s straight ahead for back the west, you're on the Goat Street Motorway”.

Arriving at Conor Pass, then looking down I gave a smile,

3

But when iI reached the Spa Road, traffic lights were turning red And straight away I thought, What would Tom the Boy and Fred Sheehy have said? 1 I was on my way to Chapel Lane, up by the Holy Stone

He said “you could have turned up, from the lights at Spa Road” But Chapel Lane was blocked off from the top you can't unload He said that “it was only for the Residents to use” “ah stop” I said “my dear man, you have me totally confused” 4

Turning right at The Droichead Beag, now I was nearly home,

Well I never thought I'd see the day, I'd have to ask the way

Up Main Street and on I went, said I’d give them a surprise

'cos I knew every nook an corner from the Ashmount to the Quay

But when I stopped the car at The Holy Stone, I couldn't believe my eyes

but times have changed and every day we're faced with something new when asked “who's your next door neighbour?” sure we haven't got a clue

Guests at the launch were treated to the best of home grown Cromane Mussels and Oysters washed down with perfectly paired bubbly from Fizz Van Ireland ahead of the launch. Cromane’s own and Kerry Footballer, Donnchadh Walsh opened the launch and gave guests an insight to his life growing up in the area from picking periwinkles on the beach to rowing for the local club and finally putting roots down at Cromane Football Club. ‘Cromane is a hidden gem but our hidden gem is getting noticed far and wide. We have the best oysters, mussels and salmon in the land, our location is idyllic and we are proud to show it off to the masses’ Donnchadh said. Saving Energy Tips atPCPs home BuyingCost a New Car and

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Q: I’m hoping to buy a new or a used car and was considering using the motor dealers’ Personal Contract Plan (PCP) as a way to pay for the car. Is a PCP a good way to finance a car purchase? A: A Personal Contract Plan (PCP) is essentially a lease scheme, similar to a Heating & Insulation: This takes up a hugemakes proportion of our energy bills or so conserving heatseem will Hire Purchase agreement, which financing a new a used car save you money. 20°C in your living areas and But 15Ǧ18°C hallways bedrooms. affordable withAim lowformonthly repayments. asinthe old and saying goesYou–can if itreduce looks heating bill by 10% by turning down the heat by one degree. Have your boiler serviced once a year to ensure it is operating efficiently. Many car dealers now offer PCPs and this method of payment can initially appear Doors & Windows: Seal off your windows and doors to prevent heat loss due to draughts. Read the small print! Many car buyers enter into these PCP agreements without reading the small print and end up being tied to a car brand that they can no longer afford or want. PCPs are among the least flexible forms of car finance. Because the repayments are fixed for the term of the agreement, you can’t usually increase your repayments each month if you want to, and if you want to extend the term, you may be charged a rescheduling fee. Personal loan vs a PCP. To avoid the hidden extras of a PCP you should instead consider taking out a personal loan to finance your car purchase. The main difference between a PCP and a personal loan is that with a personal loan you borrow the money, pay for your car, and own the car immediately. This is important because if you run into financial difficulty during your PCP agreement you wouldn’t be able to sell the car unless you had permission from the finance company, as they are the legal owner of the car. With a personal loan, there are no balloon payments and no mileage restrictions, and you’re free to sell the car whenever you want. Your credit rating. As with other types of credit, when you take out a PCP, your finance company will send details of the repayments you make to a credit reference agency. If you miss repayments it will show up on your credit history for five years after the loan is closed. A bad credit rating may mean that you will be refused a loan in the future, even if you have the income to repay it. It’s also important to note that if you agree to act as a guarantor for someone taking out a PCP you are in fact a joint hirer and not just a guarantor. Any missed repayments on the agreement will show up on your own credit record. To sum up, PCPs do suit some buyers but remember PCPs can look like a great deal initially but the devil is in the detail! - Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne Teoranta Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne is regulated by the Central Bank of Ireland

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís The deadline for our Farm Ambassador Pilot Project is fast appro aching but you still have time to register your interest with the Dingle Hub before the 25th of July 2019. The pilot project will take place in collaboration with Kerry Agribusiness, Teagasc and Net Feasa. We are currently looking for expressions of interest from those of you who meet the necessary criteria i.e. that your farm is located in West Kerry, that you are registered with Pasturebase (Teagasc) and also that you are a customer of Kerry Agribusiness. A workshop will take place during the second week of August to provide more detailed information on the project to all interested farmers. This information session will outline what exactly is involved in the pilot project and will explore the benefits of installing Internet of Things (IoT) sensor technology in farms, primarily in the areas of improving carbon efficiency as well as implementing cost and labour savings. After having attended the information workshop, the 5 farm ambassadors will be chosen and will participate in the pilot project for the duration of 1 year. Please visit www.dinglehub.com to register your interest in this project or email info@ dinglehub.com or call Deirdre de Bhailís on 066 9150140 to discuss further by the 25th of July 2019.

Catch of The Day at Beehive Theatre The hit of this year’s Feile na Bealtaine, the musical comedy Catch of The Day from Red Fox Theatre, returns to Beehive Theatre this July and August. Ireland, 1966. Joe Welch, a skipper, sails into Dingle Bay with a very unusual catch... what follows is a ridiculous series of events, involving Éamon De Valera, Queen Elizabeth and whole lot of nuns. One fish can make a big splash. A true story, Catch of The Day is a raucous and little-bit political play with a lot of heart, a lot of laughs and live trad-inspired music, all set in a Dingle pub. Fresh from its award nominated run at Edinburgh Fringe and sell out shows in London and Oxford, Catch of The Day returns to its birth place this summer for a 3 week run from 23rd July to 12th August. Beehive Theatre, Cúilín, Dingle: Tues, Thurs, Sat and Sun at 7.30 pm. Sat matinee at 2.00 pm. Tickets €15 from Leac á Ré, Strand St., Dingle. Or go to www.ticketsource.co.uk/red-fox-theatre

Eta was much loved for her compassion, her warm smile and her infectious laugh. She was devoted to the people around her and wanted be part of the local community. She had her own version of the English language which led to some funny stories. The one we remember best is the day she went for a walk and returned very excited that there was a huge wall on the beach. The wall turned out to be a whale. To the neighbours and her many friends, we thank you one and all. - The family and Anna

Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal & the Caroline Foundation

On Bank Holiday Monday 5th August next, Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal will hold the Captains’ Charity Day with an Open Team Event for Ladies and Gents. All proceeds from the Charity Day will be donated to The Caroline Foundation (http://thecarolinefoundation.com/) whose mission is to raise money to fully fund additional post-doctoral scientific researcher(s) on the Cancer Clinical Research Trust (CCRT) team which is led by Professor John Crown. All of us have in some way been affected by Cancer; directly or through a parent, relative or friend and The Caroline Foundation was set up in 2013 in memory of a beautiful young wife and teacher, Caroline DwyerHickey who passed following a 9 year battle with cancer. According to Professor Crown, world-wide clinical laboratory research has resulted in revolutionary new treatments for many types and it is vital that Ireland’s researchers participate and contribute to the War on Cancer. In addition to the laboratory research, CCRT run Clinical Trials which are vital in bringing new therapies to full development and in many cases have prolonged the life of cancer sufferers.

Castlegregory Notes The Brandon Bay HM/10k event: The Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k: the week is finally here and the final preparations are being made for the 6th annual Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k event this coming Saturday. We already have hundreds registered and we are hoping for a huge local turn out on Friday's walk-in registration evening which will be held in the club rooms from 5-9:30pm. The forecast is looking good for the weekend so all going well it will be a great day for a run/walk/jog on the beach. Start times are later this year due to tide times so the half marathon is off at 12 midday and the 10k is away at 1pm. A huge thanks as always to all our amazing sponsors and volunteers without whom the event would not take place! Remember, this year your entry not only goes towards the local soccer club Castlegregory Celtic FC but also towards The Maharees Conservation Association, Friends from Ireland charity, Aughacasla National school and Scoil Náisiúnta an Clochán as well!! Online registration remains open on www. brandonbayhalfmarathon.com until midnight Thursday. Looking forward to seeing everyone on the beach this weekend. Festival 2019: Happy faces, sunny smiles, fun and laughter filled the village over the weekend as everyone enjoyed the 2019 Summer Festival. People had a wonderful time and it was great to see happy faces everywhere. The revival of Castlegregory Fair Day is proving very popular and brought a hive of activity, hustle and bustle to the Forge Road on Saturday. The trading and the smells reminding people of days gone by;nostalgia in the air,Monster bingo,Prosecco party,Heritage walk at Killiney Grave yard and Sandcastle competitions all kept people involved and happy not to mind the dancing and disco culminating in the Foam party on Sunday night with revellers dancing and jiving in the bubbles and the foam. The highlight of the festival was the crowning of the Festival queen, Orla Goodwin from the Maharees,on Saturday night in Bolands bar. Orla is the daughter of Al and Bridget Goodwin and sister of Sean. She is a beautiful young lady who has just completed her Leaving Certificate and hopes to go on to study at U.L. We wish her the best of luck with her studies and hope she has a lovely year as our reigning Festival Queen. Club 500 June Draw Results: 1st Prize €100:

KDYS Neighbourhood Youth Project Celebrating 10 Years The KDYS Neighbourhood Youth Project is celebrating ten years of supporting young people and families of Mid Kerry. Along with this, we are opening the newly refurbished basement in the KDYS Youth Centre which will double the access space and greatly enhance the facilities we have to offer to young people in the Mid Kerry region. The opening will take place this Friday 19th July between 2pm and 6pm with the official ribbon cutting taking place at 4pm.. The Killorglin Neighbourhood Youth Project (NYP) is a partnership service between the KDYS and TUSLA the Child and Family Agency. The project is a community based youth development service with a family support remit. The NYP works using youth work processes and interventions with young people aged 12 -18 and their families. Young people accessing the KDYS NYP have a range of options available to them including an open access youth café, targeted group work programmes as well as more intensive one-to-one sessions and family support. KDYS is delivering invaluable youth services in Kerry since 1971. The establishment of a state of the art youth centre in Killorglin on the site of the old Shamrock bar has proven to be a hugely positive transformation for the young people of Mid Kerry. Youth Café: 203 young people accessed our Youth Café in 2018. This space is available to them on Wednesdays from 2pm to 5pm when local schools have a half day. It is also open from 4pm to 9pm on Fridays and offers young people a safe, warm and friendly place to meet. Young people have access to Wi-Fi, Computers, music,

gaming, a pool table, table tennis, tea and coffee, all of which are free. Group Work: The NYP runs many groups throughout the year which are aimed at developing their social, educational and emotional needs. Some of these programmes include Homework Support, Fitness, Art, Independent living, First Aid and many outdoor activity programmes. We also support a Youth Committee which actively encourages young people to take part in community activities like the Tidy Towns through litter picking and planting window boxes. Young people also plan and organise their own activities and through this learn communication and committee skills. Family Support: The NYP works with young people and families on a 1-1 basis in order to support them with challenges they may be facing including educational, social, emotional or other issues. This service is strictly confidential and is accessed on a referral basis from the many agencies we are linked with including schools, several TUSLA agencies, KDYS and other support services. Young people and families can refer themselves and this happens quite regularly.

to meet. It has a large activity room that can also accommodate meeting of up to 30 people with a projector and screen. There is a fully fitted Sensory Room for young people on the ASD spectrum. This space doubles as a “chill out” room for teenagers. The bathroom and all areas are fully wheelchair accessible with a disabled friendly toilet and shower area. There is a large kitchen and cooking area where we hope to teach basic cooking skills. While the project and basement refurbishment are funded by the KDYS and TUSLA, grants totalling €12,000 were sourced from the generous donations of Cara Credit Union, Kerry County Council and the St Finnian’s Trust. The NYP and the people of Mid Kerry are extremely grateful for these donations as they have made the Centre inclusive and a place for all.

The NYP Team: The NYP Team consist of 5 highly qualified and professional staff. Most have been working locally for over a decade and have built up fantastic relations with local schools, agencies, young people and their families. Basement: The new basement has doubled the access space for young people and groups

Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance Question I am getting Jobseeker’s Allowance and my oldest child is starting school this year. Is there a payment to help with the costs of children going to school? Answer The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA) helps you meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to school. Your children must be aged between 4 and 22 on or before 30 September 2019. If they are aged between 18 and 22 they must be in full-time second-level education in a recognised school or college. To qualify, you must be getting a social welfare payment or taking part in a training, employment or adult education scheme. In general, you must be getting an Increase for a Qualified Child with your payment. People getting the Working Family Payment and the Back to Work Family Dividend can qualify for BTSCFA. Also, your total family income must be below a certain level for your family size. The Allowance is €150 for children aged between 4 and 11 and €275 for those aged between 12 and 22. The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection pays the BTSCFA automatically to many families. This means

that they do not have to apply for the payment. If you qualify automatically, you will be notified by 24 June 2019 and you will get your payment the week beginning 8 July 2019. If you do not get an automatic payment you must apply for the Allowance. If any of your children are aged 18 or over, you must also apply for the Allowance for them and show evidence that they are in secondlevel education (even if automatic payments have issued for other children in the family). From 24 June 2019, you can apply for the Allowance online through mywelfare.ie. You must have a Public Services Card and a verified MyGovID account to apply online. You can also apply using an application form, which is available in all Intreo centres and Social Welfare Branch Offices and online from welfare.ie or you can request a form by texting Form BTSCFA followed by your name and address to 51909 or by emailing BSCFA@ welfare.ie. The closing date for applications is 30 September 2019. A dedicated phone line is available to answer your questions from 24 June 2019: (071) 919 3319. If you are refused the Allowance, you can ask for a review of the decision. West Kerry Live 45

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Blúire Béaloidis Crom Dubh - scéal as Lios Póil, Co. Chiarraí faoi Chrom Dubh sa Chlochán. Sasanach a bhí ann agus neart stoic aige. Bhí tarbh dásachtach aige agus dúirt sé le sagart é a thabhairt leis óir shíl sé go maródh an beithíoch é. Thug an sagart an tarbh leis gan stró agus bhí Crom ar buile. D'iarr sé ar an sagart íoc as de réir meáchain. D'aontaigh an sagart agus cuireadh an tarbh ar an meá. Scríobh an sagart an tÁivé Máiria ar phíosa páipéir agus chuir sé sin ar an taobh eile den mheá. Tógadh an tarbh in airde ar an meá, rud a scanraigh Crom. D'iompaigh sé ina Chaitliceach agus bhaist an sagart é agus bíonn lá mór acu ar an gClochán i ndeireadh mhí Iúil le ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar an lá sin. Custard Tart (maybe the best dessert ever!) Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Simply it is sweet pastry with a baked custard and a little nutmeg but When made correctly it has to be one of the best tarts ever. I saw one on a menu recently and it was divine. Learn to make this well and you will have an something that will suit any table after a meal. Ingredients for the pastry 225g plain flour 150g butter, cubed and chilled 50g caster sugar 1 large egg (plus 1 egg yolk for an egg wash, optional see below)) for the filling

Wrap this in cling film and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. Remove this from the fridge and roll it out between two greased sheets of parchment. Roll it out until it fits the tart tin and remember to keep it thin. Place this in the greased tart tin and make sure it comes all the way up the sides of the tin. Place this in the fridge again for 30 minutes or so. Preheat the oven 180ºC. Place a sheet of parchment over the pastry and add baking beans or rice to blind bake it. Place this in the oven for about 20 minutes.

Beehive Theatre, Cúilín, Dingle 23rd July to 11th August Tues, Thurs, Sat & Sun 7.30pm Sat Matinee 2pm Recommended 12 €15

Remove the sheet of parchment with the beans or rice and put the tart back in for another 5 minutes, this will help to firm up the base. One extra tip here to use for any liquid filling to a baked tart like this, is to brush a very little egg yolk over the base and bake for further 3 minutes, this will prevent any of the custard from leaking and also prevents the pastry from being soggy.

Tickets at Leac a' Ré, Strand Street, Dingle

For The Filling Turn the oven down to 125ºC.

350ml cream

Add the cream and milk and vanilla (slit the vanilla pod with a small knife and let the seeds fall in to the liquid along with the vanilla pod) to a pot and place over medium heat. Bring this to a simmer.

100ml milk 1 vanilla pod 8 large egg yolks 100g caster sugar 1 nutmeg Method Grease An 9 Inch Tart Tin. For The Pastry Place the flour in a large bowl and add in the cubed butter. Use your fingers to rub in the butter into the flour until it looks like sand or breadcrumbs. Gently add in the sugar. Next add the egg and work it very lightly until it all comes together. Once it has come together gently knead it for no more than 30 seconds. If you over work the pastry it will be tough.

Place the egg yolks and sugar in a bowl and whisk together. Remove the vanilla pod. Pour the hot liquid carefully over the egg yolk and sugar mixture. Gently pour this mixture into the tart. Grate a generous amount of nutmeg over the tart and bake this for 35 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave it for another 5-10 minutes. Place this on a wire rack and allow it to cool before removing the tin. Slice and serve. Bain taitneamh as!!!
