Whale Nation

Heathcote Williams, actor, artist and writer, is still remembered in Dingle for his long elegy to Fungie ('Falling for a Dolphin'). He is more widely known for his powerful epic poem Whale Nation, written in the 1980s. This poem quickly became an international hit, and did much to raise public awareness of the very special qualities of whales, and of the fact that some species were very close to extinction. For centuries men have hunted them for food and oils, and used their bodies for every sort of industrial process , and some countries are continuing to do so. The International Whaling Commission got round to banning commercial whaling altogether in 1986, but Iceland and Norway still hunt them, and this year Japan has decided to start killing whales again (in the name of 'science'). Whale Nation is an angry work, but it is also a poem of great beauty. Ted Hughes spoke of it as 'brilliant, dramatic and wonderfully moving'. Heathcote Williams sees the whale as the most mysterious, gifted and intelligent creature to inhabit the high seas, which constitute almost seven tenths of our planet. We have exploited and plundered the nation of whales when we might have learned a new way of living from them. Whales are frequent visitors to the Dingle Peninsular. Many local people have a special care and concern for their continued survival. It is only right that we should give 'Whale Nation' a new outing.

Dingle Notes

Day of Healing

Richie Williams HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The Dingle Skeilig Hotel is the venue for the next lecture in the 2019 Summer Series organised by the Dingle Historical Society on Tuesday August 27th. The theme is The Best Government Ever-- the local angle on the making of David Lean's Ryan's Daughter on the Dingle Peninsula in 1968/69. Local journalist and author Mícheal de Mordha will be the presenter and the lecture starts at 8.00p.m. This should bring back many happy memories for a lot of people particularly those involved in the preparation and production of the film that springboarded the Peninsula into prominance all over the world. RACES. Despite the changeable weather and other sporting attractions over the weekend Dingle Horse and Pony Races were once again well supported and most efficiently organised. The team of volunteers who put so much time and effort into this major event on the National Horse and Pony Racing Calendar are indeed to be congratulated and thanked for their continued contribution to ensuring the weekend is by far the most popular in the country. Every horse and pony owner and trainer seem to value a win in Dingle above success at any other meeting either in Ireland or England. Míle Buíochas do gach einne a bhí páirteach ins an eagraiocht arís imbliana. BUSINESS. The Business Chamber wish to welcome another new outlet to the commercial and social life in town. Bob Griffin's Bar in Strand Street is the latest to open its doors after some refurbishment and adds further choice for the local and visitor clientele alike. Good Luck Dawn and Rickie with the initiative and of course Normán in your stewardship at the venue. REGATTA. One of the most popular events in the local sporting calendar , the Dingle Regatta, will be held on this weekend commencing on both Saturday and Sunday at 2p.m. Crews from the Maharees, Brandon,Camp, Cork, Clare and Galway will join the local crews with competitions catering for all ages from under 12 up to Seniors in both Ladies, Mens and Mixed Races. The inaugural All Ireland Competitions for Under 12, 14, 16 and 18 mixed boats will feature as part of the weekend programme and another new race this year will see crews from the Coastguard compete against each other on Sunday afternoon. The All Ireland Coastal Rowing Competitions will also be held in Dingle this weekend in the outer Harbour area starting early on Friday morning and finishing on Sunday afternoon. With plenty of activity and loads to see the Marina and Pier areas are certainly worth a visit this weekend. TIDY TOWNS. To coincide with the National Water Heritage Week Celebrations the Tidy Towns Committee are organising a Bird Watch Native Fauna and Flora talk at Milltown Bridge on Friday August 23rd commencing at 7p.m. This area certainly attracts a lot of different species of wildlife of late and the list of speakers on these interesting topics should provide us with a greater insight into what exists close to us in the river and nearby areas also. Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. Everybody Welcome. SLÁN TAMALL!!!.

They must expect to become an employer within three years.

CLIMATE PLAN MUST SUPPORT IRELAND’S GRASS-FED PRODUCTION MODEL - ICOS A co-operative representative body has said that its members across the dairy, livestock and rural enterprise sectors are willing to play their part and will contribute “constructively” to the achievement of the Climate Action Plan. However, the president of the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS), Jerry Long, has also said: “The approach by Government must always remain balanced and supportive of Ireland’s leading, sustainable, grass-fed model of production.” The Government’s Climate Action Plan has been described as “very demanding for the agri-food sector”; however, Long also said that the sector “must play its part in delivering a low carbon future for the next generation”. Continuing, Long said: “Farmers and the wider agri-food sector should be under no illusions that the action plan, as set out by the Government, will require a significant effort by all stakeholders working collaboratively if we are to achieve the 10-15% reduction target.” The ICOS president noted that the plan includes very demanding targets for the agri-food sector including: •

Increasing the usage of protected urea from 1% of the straight nitrogen market today to 50% by 2030;

Increasing the usage of trailing shoe technology for slurry spreading from 10% to 50% by 2030;

Increasing the average EBI from €70 today to €230 by 2030;

Doubling average afforestation rates from 5,500ha per annum today to 10,000ha per annum by 2030.

CALL FOR RURAL FEMALE ENTREPRENEURS TO JOIN ACORNS ACORNS is the highly successful development initiative to support female entrepreneurs living in rural Ireland, who wish to start and develop new businesses or have recently started a business. The call for applications follows the launch of the programme earlier this week. ACORNS is funded under the Department’s Rural Innovation and Development Fund. The programme is a: •

Government-backed programme to assist 50 new rural female entrepreneurs this year

Past participants report increased sales, exports and jobs

Rise in early stage female entrepreneurs as high-profile business leaders support women starting their own enterprises in rural Ireland

Over 200 female entrepreneurs have taken part in ACORNS to date and 50 new participants are being sought for ACORNS 5. The programme will run over six months from October 2019 to April 2020. The deadline for application for this year’s cycle is 20th September 2019. Any woman with a new business based in rural Ireland, or an idea for a new venture they want to get off the ground, can get more information and download an application form at www.acorns.ie. There is no charge for participation. Many past participants of ACORNS report increased exports and job creation. Progress made by the 46 participants that completed ACORNS 4 (the last cycle), which ran from October 2018 to April 2019, demonstrates these encouraging outcomes: Combined turnover for participants is €2.3m – an increase of 43% over the six-month programme cycle, •

Thirteen participants became exporters for the first time,

19 additional part-time employees were hired during the cycle, with 26 companies planning to hire additional staff this year,

86% said ACORNS brought about practical change within their business; 95% felt nearer to achieving their ambitions and 100% would recommend participating in ACORNS to others.

Past participants of ACORNS are also invited to participate in a further 10 West Kerry Live

Applications must be made on-line using DAFM’s Agfood.ie website/ system and before the closing date of 8th September 2019. GRASSLAND MANAGEMENT – FACING THE AUTUMN It’s Time to Start Building Grass for the Autumn. From the 10th August, farmers will have to start building grass for the autumn. The idea of building grass is to have a bank of grass on the farm in the autumn to be able to extend the grazing season, while closing off the farm properly for next spring. Walk the farm and be flexible to meet the targets. The rule of thumb is to have an average farm cover of roughly 1,000 kg DM/ha and a cover/cow of 300-330 by the first week of September. Spread N early– Nitrogen responses are highest in August while growth rate is high, so make sure to keep applying N to capitalise on August

growth rates. This will help build grass on farms. Rotation length should be extended from 10th August to reach 30 days by Sept 1st. E.g. 100 acre farm- grazing 4 acres/day by late August. Remove surplus livestock from the grazing platform to reduce demand (marginal cows). Do not increase supplementation levels unless you have a grass budget done and can see that it is absolutely necessary. This is the most expensive method of building grass. Do not over-build grass. Control the build to a level of 1,100-1,200 kg DM/ha by mid-September. We do not want to graze covers over 2,400 kg DM/ha and we do not want to carry very heavy covers over to next Spring. And, try to reach residuals of 4 cm consistently to have quality grass for next spring and be flexible in your approach and therefore walk the farm weekly to remain on target. Now is the time to spread lime on farms Make use of any slurry available on farms. Use LESS techniques and target low index soils. Products like Muriate of Potash or 0-7-30 can be spread on low index ground or where silage comes off to build indexes.

West Kerry Care Of The Aged Charity Shop

West Kerry Care Of The Aged Charity Shop in Goat Street, Dingle has been trading for over 30 years. It was opened to help raise funds to support services for senior citizens in the West Kerry area.

WEST KERRY CARE OF THE AGED

CHARITY SHOP SIOPA FIAL

Funds raised have been put to great use - for example West Kerry Care Of The Aged have been able to provide services like GairdĂn Mhuire Day Care Centre and apartments, custom built to suit the needs of the senior citizens utilizing it. The provision of transport and staffing are also part funded. Another beneficiary is Teach CaitlĂn, that lovely home from home on the Mall, Dingle. These services have proved essential to older people in the West Kerry area and would not exist were it not for the West Kerry Care Of The Aged committee, a voluntary group who have, for over 45 years, worked so hard to help support services for older people in the area. The charity shop is a major source of income in helping fund the maintenance of these services. West Kerry Care Of The Aged committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all those of you who have supported the shop over the years, through your donations of second-hand items and your purchasing of same. Taking the Myth out of Tír na nÓg! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Aging is a bizarre process when you think about it. It happens to most of us (if we live long enough) yet it is rarely mentioned until things start to go awry and “suddenly” we are aged - a bit like Óisin, from Tír na nÓg, when he fell off that horse. There is a widespread acceptance that as we age everything about our bodies goes to pot - poor eyesight, wrinkles, sagging, creaky bones, stiff joints, mental decline and ill-health until eventually we shed our decrepit Earthly mantle and move on to other things! While life expectancy has improved greatly, particularly during the last century, we haven’t really managed to live longer in good health and intact. When health authorities are asked to explain the rise in cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis and type 2 diabetes, their response is “we are living longer” yet no-one explains or wants to explain, exactly why living longer should pose such a risk to our health! Determining when men and women reach their physical peak has been difficult to establish but most evidence concurs it happens sometime in our twenties – earlier for men and more closer to the thirties for women. Irrespective of the age, once we have peaked, aging begins much like a path that lies ahead of us. In the Western world, genetics, diet and lifestyle are most influential in determining if that path is a long, straight road with few bumps or potholes along the way, or if it will be an uphill struggle with challenges and obstacles, curving or twisted or if it will be a short downhill sprint to an untimely death. Our health status at the time of our peak, arriving at the start line, is a critical factor on how well we age into the future. With rising obesity levels and associated health problems, particularly among our young people, the aging process begins on the wrong footing from the beginning and the

path set out for many of this generation and the next is far from smooth or long. Free radical damage is probably the number two factor in the aging process, our starting point being number one. The free radical theory of aging states that organisms age because cells accumulate free radical damage over time. Free radicals are highly volatile atoms or molecules (the science bit!) that are unstable due to unpaired electrons. In an effort to become “paired” they will pull electrons from nearby atoms or molecules making those unstable and thus a chain reaction begins. Free radicals are responsible for damage to DNA in cells, cell mutations and loss of function of cells and instigating the onset and progression of many chronic, degenerative diseases. We create free radicals of our own through metabolic and cellular activity, but we are also exposed to additional free radicals through pollution, UV light, smoking, chemicals, drugs, processed foods and denatured fats. The good news is that free radicals can be mopped up by antioxidants found in the food we eat, in particular from plants. Vitamins A, C, E, carotenoids, anthocyanins, selenium, zinc are just a few of the potent antioxidants found in true food sources, sadly missing from most modern diets. Apart from limiting our exposure to free radical damage from the outside, education on how to limit the free radical burden we create within our bodies needs to be addressed. Overtraining and exercise, chronic stress and poor quality sleep are major sources of free radical damage. Óisín was doing great over in Tír na nÓg, free of stress and sorrow– it wasn’t until he tried lifting that stone (and fell off the horse) that he aged by three hundred years!

Number three in the theory of aging is to do with our connection with Nature, our fellow human family and community around us - not so scientific, and unfortunately, hardly considered in the 21st century. Ill-health of the body is the physical manifestation of disharmony in our emotional self. In the process of connecting the whole globe through technology, we have, in the process, cut ourselves off from our grounding, our natural Earth and our people. It has been demonstrated through many studies that with chronic unease comes disease. Depression, anxiety, mental illness and loneliness are most prevalent among the aged, not because they are living longer, but perhaps living longer disconnected from society and nature. In many traditions including our own – our elders were integrated and valuable members of every community. Much of modern living has interrupted and distorted the nature of our lives in its quest for a longer life, but at what cost? Tír na nÓg for us mortals can be more than a myth depending on the road we pave for ourselves at the start. Being well-nourished, physically and emotionally can sustain us during our journey while Nature and good company will go along way to ensure we arrive safe, happy and healthy!

I ventured down to Clonakilty earlier this summer to De Barra’s Folkclub and hometown of Ursidae’s lead guitearist and singer Dónal Tuipéar. A chance to hear a band I’d heard previously on a podcast, and an excuse to get away for a weekend. The room filled slowly as the trio rigged up with many there to see and hear the home boy, and get to hear the other band members - Marcas Mac Donncha from Conamara on base guitar, Corca Dhuibhne’s own Oisín Ó hEartáin on drums, and special guest on the night Killian McCarthy on keyboards. It didn’t take them long to start knocking out those tunes, cúple focal ó Dhónal agus away leo! A great beat and energy got feet tappin’ and heads noddin’ straight off, and the room filled some more. Fabulous mix of rock-folk-funk-blues, with covers such as Pavement Tune, Mary Jane’s Last Dance & Blood Bank and originals - Fool’s Fate and Bonsai Tree, and soon the crowd was out on the floor stompin’, boogyin’ or what ever ye do yerself - a great night out!! Ursidae’s West Kerry debut (Saturday 17th August) has been building for some time now, and with another local lad startin’ off the night at 9.30 - Julian Boland on guitar & vocals and Ursudae hittin’ the stage around 11.00, this is one night not to be missed! From The Archives Dingle Regatta Special Edited By Ted Creedon Dingle Regatta – 1843 From – Kerry Evening Post, 7 October 1843. The Dingle Bay regatta came off on the 29th ult., [Sept] and afforded considerable amusement. The harbour, dotted here and there with boats, looked quite enchanting. Precisely at 12 o’clock, Mr. Eagar [Steward] fired the signal gun and the following first-class boats started – The Rose, Flaherty owner, The Anne, Patt Grey, The Fly, Patt Grey, The Black Eagle, Captain Hickson, The Fly, Collier and The Wave, Flaherty. The course was from the quay at Dingle, round a boat moored off Burnham House, then out the harbour’s mouth to another boat moored off Ventry Tower and back to the quay. The Rose was the winner.

Dingle Regatta – 1853 From – Tralee Chronicle, 12 August 1853. Last Friday, two trawlers, one the property of Richard Hickson, J. P., the other belonging to Robert Hickson, merchant, started from a flag boat in the harbour at 20 minutes past 6 a.m. They were to round the Perch Rock in Valentia harbour, a distance of 15 miles from the starting place. Richard Hickson’s boat passed the Perch Rock about ten minutes ahead of Robert Hickson’s boat. On the return journey the vessels passed each other three times but Richard Hickson’s boat was the winner.

Dingle Regatta – 1857 From – Tralee Chronicle, 4 September 1857. To be held on Wednesday the 16th of September, weather permitting. The following prizes will be given; First Race – for trawling boats and hookers belonging to the Coast of Kerry; First Boat = £9; Second Boat = £4 –10 shillings; Third Boat = £2 – 10 shillings. Second Race – for gigs. First Boat = £3, Second Boat = £1 – 10 shillings. Third Race – for eight-oared canoes or curraghs [currachs], First Boat = £4, Second Boat = £2. Fourth Race – for Punts. First Boat = £1.

Dingle Regatta – 1858 From – Tralee Chronicle, 10 August 1858. (Extract). The second race that came off was between three canoes. One from Brandon named St. Peter owned by Hartnett; Challenger of Dingle owned by James Moran and Gannett of Dingle owned by P. Moran. It was blowing a strong westerly breeze at the time. St. Peter came in the winner

by some odds, Challenger was second.

general public.

Dingle Regatta – 1861

To cap the climax of the many and varied pleasantries of some nine hours duration a great treat was afforded the thousands present in a grand display of fireworks.

From – Tralee Chronicle, 13 August 1861. (Extract). The harbour presented a most animated appearance, as its placid bosom was dotted with boats of various sizes, from the fine yacht and large hooker to the tiny craft, or punt, which is always fond of keeping close to the shore. But none of these attracted more attention than Colonel de Moleyns’ gig which was steered by himself. It was crewed by four handsome young fellows from the Burnham side of the harbour, wearing scarlet flannel shirts and white straw hats.

Dingle Regatta – 1905 From – Kerryman, 8 July 1905. There is some talk about holding a regatta. If the men who were associated with these aquatic sports in recent years put their shoulders to the wheel a regatta will be held, and, no doubt, their efforts would be rewarded with the success which attended them on previous occasions.

Thousands of both sexes, dressed in holiday garb, from town and country assembled on the pier and all along the coast on either side of the harbour, and especially at Emlagh Point. Many a craft, some at their moorings and others sailing through the harbour, were crowded to excess.

Costof Saving Energyto TipsCollege at home The Cost Going

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Q: My daughter is hoping to start college this year and we have been reading in the papers recently that it can cost around €10,000 or more per child per year to go to university in Ireland. They have a sliding scale where students may be entitled to a full or a part grant, depending on the household income and on various other conditions, such as the number of dependent children in the household. On average 40% of students receive Higher Education grants, and their student contribution charge will be paid by SUSI.

Be aware that coming towards the end of August you will find that a lot of the expenses are expected to be paid, such as the student contribution fee (which can be paid in two halves) and probably the deposit and rent up until Christmas. This can mean that parents face bills of around €4,000 at this time of year. If your daughter is not entitled to a grant, and if you feel that your own financial circumstances may make it difficult for you to cover these costs, you may opt to apply for an Education Loan. Even if your daughter is entitled to a grant, you may need to apply for a bridging loan until the grant is paid. Terms and conditions do apply to these loans but it is worth your while checking them out. According to a recent article in The Irish Times, 50% of families rely on loans or other borrowings to cover the cost of college. And finally, get your daughter actively involved in the financial planning for the year ahead. Most colleges have a section on the cost of living on their websites and also a guide for students on how to budget. The Higher Education Authority (www.hea. ie/funding) also have a section on student finances with links to the SUSI website and also information on various bursaries and scholarships available.

News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Charity begins ….in Ceann Sibéal Through the generosity of Ceann Sibéal members and visitors, a total of just under €8,000 was contributed to two very worthwhile charities in the past couple of weeks. Lá Carthannachta na gCaptaein raised just under €6,000 for the Charity nominated - The Caroline Foundation who themselves to date have raised over €850,000 for Cancer Research in Ireland. The founders of The Caroline Foundation attended the event and were thrilled to see the support they received.

Upcoming Events Over the next period, events include the Tom Creed-sponsored Open Mixed Foursomes on Saturday 17th August, Mens Fourball on Sunday 18th sponsored by David O’Connor with Ladies Open Singles sponsored by Strand House on Wednesday 21st. Liam O’Hanlon RIP Members were saddened to hear of the death of Liam O’Hanlon Senior last week. Liam, known as “The Doc” was a very popular member and played golf very successfully into his 85th year. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dhílis.

45 teams of 3 competed in the Open Scramble for prizes sponsored by Tomás Garvey and 30 Sponsors supplemented the funds. At the presentation of prizes, Helen O’Sullivan Dwyer spoke eloquently of the work of The Caroline Foundation and their appreciation of the welcome and support they received from Ceann Sibéal. On Thursday 8th August, the annual Seniors’ fundraiser for the Cork/Kerry Health Link Bus (Nasc-Bhus Sláinte Chorchaí/Chiarraí) took place. Again, support was excellent for an organisation who provide a practical and invaluable service to those who must travel for treatment. The Seniors Club will present them with €2,000 from the Competition which will fund the operation of a Bus for a good period of time. There is a fine history in Ceann Sibéal of raising money for worthy causes; in recent years, funds have been donated for Motor Neurone Research and to the family of the late Liam Duggan amongst others. Worldwide, Golf is a popular mechanism for fundraising where many of the star names have their own charibable foundations; as a small club, we in Ceann Sibéal should be proud that we can contribute our share.

Moving Dust Through Water Michael Flaherty Moving Dust Through Water is an exhibition of paintings that sees Michael Flaherty capture and mythologise the West Kerry terrain triumphantly. Born in Cloghane, Co. Kerry, Flaherty paints the untamed Wild Atlantic landscape with vivacity and dramatically charged energy. He offers us scenes which are familiar to him but that have been filtered through his imagination. They are his response to and his depiction of place and subject.

Moving Dust Through Water The Greenlane Gallery Dingle invites you to an exhibition of paintings by

Michael Flaherty Exhibition Opens Saturday 31st August, 6.30pm - 8.30pm Continues until 14th September

Michael’s desire to interpret his homeland and to translate his deep memory of place, and its sensations, preoccupy him. In this new series of paintings he effectively conveys place and subject with a genuine sensitivity for the Brandon area. He instils it with an emotional intensity that comes from honesty and a deep connection for his environment. He is attentive to the seasons, the weather, and the feelings and energy of the place. Through his direct contact and knowledge of the area he empathises with a certain aspect of a scene, or a subject, and aspires to bring it forth through various elements in a painting. ‘Flaherty clearly doesn't set out merely to record a scene in terms of its appearance, it enacts the excitement of the experience of an environment and, equally, excitement of painting .. His appreciation of this terrain has deepened his sense of engagement’. What is special about Flaherty’s work is that his paintings maintain the bond with the land or subject that allows the viewer to reach beyond what is pictorial and literal. Michael’s style is highly personalised and his technique is ‘remarkably assured, incredibly fresh, incredibly instant’ . His scenes of Dingle and the peninsula are built up through a myriad of paint and colour. His vibrant palette is daring and unconventional; his compositions spontaneous and lyrical; his dynamic use of paint is intrepid and unconstrained working rich impasto layers to the third dimensional. It is Michael’s immediate emotional and spiritual response to his surroundings that connects the viewer with the paintings raw urgency and honesty. Michael says his true vocation to painting came out of curiosity. A graduate of UCC and Maynooth, Michael took a year out from teaching and went to live in Inniscarra where he came to drawing almost out of boredom. He states that he basically found a pencil, and 'thought this was it - it was like discovering language!' . For Michael painting is a quiet preoccupation. ‘I could express things through drawing and colour that were not dependant on verbal language. Since then I think of painting as silent - it is a different thing from speech or writing’ . He concluded by affirming ‘art links everything through silence’ . Immersing himself in his newfound language Michael enrolled in night classes at the Crawford College of Art & Design and later applied to Sligo School of Art where he was accepted on enthusiasm alone. While influenced by the expressionists, Michael says he doesn’t subscribe to their movement but empathises with their style. Indeed his work has been enthused to the likeness of Jack B. Yeats, Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Henry and Seán Mc Sweeney. After completing his training Michael spent some time in Edinburgh where he held his first solo show in 1982. He returned to Kerry after the death of a relative in 1988. A farmer’s son, his home and studio are on the same land today that he left as a child. It is here that Michael’s style evolved fully until it was very personal and true to him. Dunne, Aidan, Irish Times Art Critic, 2000. Hunt, John, RTÉ August 1999. What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís We were delighted to participate in the 40th Féile Lios Póil and to get the opportunity to showcase the energy projects underway on the Dingle Peninsula, giving progress updates on the Energy Master Plan, ESB Networks Dingle Project, the planned Energy Coach Training and the feasibility study for anaerobic digestion. Our Farm Ambassador Pilot Project kicked off here in the Dingle Hub on the 7th of August with the attendance of representatives from Teagasc, Kerry Agribusiness, NetFeasa and members of the Dingle Peninsula farming community. The objectives of the Farm Ambassador Project were outlined to the farmers and the benefits of smart farming Agriculture Internet of Things (IoT) sensors were highlighted. The aim of the project is to install IoT sensor technology on a number of farms, to improve and measure greenhouse gas emissions, as well as implement cost and labour savings. As part of the project, each farm ambassador will trial the use of sensor technologies to support areas of farm

management, including soil moisture, milk height and slurry height together with a local weather sensor, incorporating wind speed, temperature, rainfall and air pressure. Ongoing support to the farm ambassadors will be provided by Teagasc and Kerry Agribusiness, along with more general support from Net Feasa and the Dingle Hub. The next step is to complete farm visits to ascertain if the farms are suitable and the available technology useful in relation to each particular farm. This pilot project is very much considered a starting point within a select number of farms utilising precision farming techniques and technologies, which could eventually be rolled out over many more farms in the future. The pilot project will continue for a duration of 12 months. The main goal of the Dingle Hub is to create viable and sustainable jobs on the Dingle Peninsula. This is achieved through organising workshops, events, projects, community engagement, etc. and supported by funding and grant assistance. We work in three main

Breandán Mac Gearailt Caid Bhí a gcroí ina mbéal an Domhnach seo caite. Bhí foireann Thír Eoghain chun cinn agus go leor daoine ag rá, ‘ná dúirt leat go mbuafadh Tír Eoghain ortha’. Im chás féin bhíos don dtuairim go gcaithfeadh feabhas tracht sa dara leath. Ní fheadfa a thuiscint go mbuafaí ort agus réalta crua láidir againn mar Ó Moráin , Pól Geaney, Stephen O’Brien, Tommí Breathnach, Seán O’Shea agus. Dáithí Clifford. Sea ambaist thosnaíodar go maith sa dara leath ach ansan thosnaigh na Buachaillí Thuaidh ag teacht ar n-ais. Fuair Ó Brien an- báide agus pointe direach ina dhiadh. Bhí againn. Chuaidh Tir Eoghain go dtí an gcraobh chluiche anuiridh agus bhí sé ráite go forleathan go mbeadh an lá leo in aghaidh Chiarraí i mbliana. Buadh ortha ar an nDomhnach. Anois, an bhfuil aon tseans go ndéanfaidh siad an bheart ar Bhleá Cliath? Foireann maith sea iad

hÉireann i Sasana fé lathair. Iad ag tóch rompa.

5. An mó craobh miniúr caide buaite ag Ciarraí?

Bás. Tháinig an scéala chughainn go bhfuair bean chéile, Mhiris Bric, Mary Ellen, bás i Mericeá. Bean gheanúil cháirdiúil. Gur in iothlainn Dé í.

6. Cén t-imreoir ó Chiarraí is mó a scóráil báidí i gcomórtas Sinsir Chiarraí?

An bhó bhocht San idir linn tá feirmeóirí déiríochta fiain le fearg as a ndheirtear a tharlóidh do thréada ba bainne. Is dócha go mbeidh sé deacair é a stop ach má bhíonn cúiteamh leanúnach le fáil ag an bhfeirmeóir is dócha go mbeadh sé sásta. Fé láthair mheasfá go gcaithfear cás na bhfeirmeoirí a throid ar gach bonn. Poilitíocht Thall is abhus. His journey has been watched with pride by his family, friends, and all involved with Cromane GAA Club. Well done, again, Kieran. Contact our coaching officer Gavin O'Connor or send a DM on social media to reserve space. MINORS: Central Region Minor League Division 2 semi-final - result: GGC 4-17, Kerins O’Rahillys 2-14 The GGC minors qualified for the Central Region Division 2 final having produced an excellent performance in very tough conditions in Glenbeigh last Thursday evening. If anyone looked out their windows between 7 and 8pm that evening they would have cancelled any outdoor plans they had - well, over 30 young lads from these two clubs braved those monsoon

conditions. Not only that they displayed some excellent skills and gave all in attendance an excellent display. They gave their all and fought for every ball. The first 30 minutes were tight enough and GGC led by two points at the break - 2-8 to 1-9 - but pulled away early in the second half with goals from Aaron Broderick and Rian O’Donovan. GGC actually started the game superbly and led by 2-4 to 0-3 after the first quarter with the goals coming from Darragh McKeefry (when he buried a rebound after his initial shot hit the post) and Sean Quirke who skidded an excellent long-range shot into the bottom corner. The Tralee lads responded in the second quarter and only for a superb Jack McGillycuddy save could well have led at the break. GGC came out strong in the second half with Liam Roche, Sean Tadhg Sheahan and Kaiya O’Flaherty dominating around the half back line. Tommy Quirke and Liam Smith did likewise at midfield while Darragh McKeefry, Rian O’Donovan and Sean Quirke were constant thorns in the Kerins O’Rahillys backline.

by Glenbeigh-Glencar in their second last Mid Kerry game of the year in Cromane last Friday evening. The performance was a huge improvement on one they produced against the same opposition only ten days earlier. Their final game is against Keel at a time to be decided. UNDERAGE TRAINING: Our Sunday morning underage training has been postponed for the next few weeks. This is due to the combination of the GAA Cúl Camps in Cromane, our own summer camp in August, and Kerry games that are played on Sundays. Our Sunday morning training will recommence on Sunday next, August 18, at 11.15am. FIXTURES: Sunday, August 18 - County League Division 5 Group B (round 11): Cromane v Austin Stacks B in Connolly Park, Tralee, at 1.30pm (provisional time and date). Tuesday, August 20 - Mid Kerry Under-14 championship (round 1): GGC v MilltownCastlemaine in Milltown at 7pm. Thursday, August 22 - Central Region Minor Division 2 final: GGC v Castlegregory (provisional date).

With ten left GGC led by 4-15 to 1-10 before Kerins O’Rahillys staged a late revival hitting 1-4 in the last ten minutes.

Tuesday, August 27 - Mid Kerry Under-14 championship (round 2): GGC v MilltownCastlemaine in Milltown at 7pm.

Another terrific performance from the GGC minors who now have a Central Region final to look forward to. The final is provisionally fixed for Thursday, August 22. No venue or time yet.

Dingle Book Signing Author Sheila Forsey will be signing copies of her debut novel Kilbride House in The Dingle Bookshop on August 22nd at 2pm. Having spent time here in West Kerry, Sheila was inspired by the area and the backdrop of the book is very much about the Dingle Peninsula and the Blasket Islands and the pure magic and beauty of it.

Sheila recalls her time here. " I spent some time in the Dingle Peninsula a few years ago. Its rugged beauty stole my soul. If ever there was a place that almost held the spirit of the past, I felt this was it. When I first looked out at the Blasket Islands, there was a mist and as it eventually lifted the sky changed from indigo to violet and slowly revealed the Islands, it looked almost ghostlike, brooding and incredibly beautiful. I grew up with a deep connection to the legends, mysticism and folklore of Ireland’s intricate past and looking out at this piece of ancient Ireland I had never felt closer to the spirt of Ireland’s past. I was also lucky enough to witness a storm there and all the elements came alive fighting to be heard, I tried to imagine what it must have been like for the people who had lived on the Blasket Islands, their lives depending on the elements. A people who seemed to have carried an incredible wisdom. Over the centuries Ireland has changed immensely but there are parts of the Dingle Peninsula that remain unchanged. How incredibly lucky we are to have this piece of Ireland that is so central to our past and our heritage. Ireland’s people have left this Island of ours for centuries, for me the Dingle Peninsula is almost spiritual in its brooding beauty, it carries the wisdom of the past and of its people. I wanted to write a very Irish love story that was filled with a deep connection to the spirt of Ireland. Looking out at the sea from Slea Head, in a moment, I knew I had found the perfect place. 38 West Kerry Live

Lotto Jackpot Draw: €9,600 is the new Jackpot total on offer on Friday August 23rd in O Shea"s Bar. We will also have a Match 3 Jackpot of €300 and our 6 consolation prizes.

Under 16’s:Central Region Division 4 SemiFinal: Huge commiserations to the above management team and panel who lost out to Annascaul Lispole on Wednesday last. Final score: 2:10 to 2:14. Well done to all for a super effort. Sincere thanks to Norman Foley Spar and Burkes Butchers for their continued sponsorship. Credit Union County Senior Football League: Division 3, by Dara O'Connor Gneeveguilla 0-11 Milltown/Castlemaine 0-9 Hard luck to our seniors, sponsored by Kelly's Londis Topshop, Milltown and Larkins Bar and Restaurant, who fought gallantly on the road but just fell short against a now joint top Gneeveguilla side. Despite controlling large shares of the game possession wise and leading 0-4 to 0-0 after the first quarter, we found it harder to translate the same dominance into scores as the game wore on. We remain 4th heading into the Round 11 home game vs Currow in the next few weeks where we will aim to finish the campaign on a positive

Our scorers: Jonathan O'Sullivan 0-3, Dylan O'Neil 0-2, Craig Counihan 0-2, Gavin Horan & Jamie O'Shea 0-1

Here are the latest lucky winners from last Friday night's draw: €50 each to Catherine and John Joe Harmon and Liam Hurley, Milltown. €25 each to Evan McKenna, Milltown, Evan Kelliher, Castlemaine, James Tyther, Firies and Derek Twiss, Milltown.Congratulations to you all.

Appealing your Leaving Cert results Question If I am unhappy with a result in my Leaving Cert, how can I get the grade reviewed? Answer The Leaving Cert results will be available on 13 August this year. If you are unhappy about a result and would like to have it checked, you can appeal your grade to the State Examinations Commission (SEC). However, before you decide to appeal your grade, you can view your examination script to see how your work was marked. To do this, you must register on the Candidate Self Service Portalon the SEC website, examinations.ie. You can make an application to the viewing of scripts service online from 9am, 14 August to 5pm, 16 August. You will need your username and password (you get this when you register on the portal). Only the scripts from the written examinations can be viewed - not the results of oral examinations or marks for practical examinations. If your script was marked on paper, you will be assigned a session to view it on either 20 August or 21 August. If it was marked online you can view it online from 5pm on Tuesday 20 August to 5pm on Wednesday 21 August. If you decide to go ahead and appeal your result after viewing your script, you should log into examinations.ie, access the Candidate Self Service Portal and complete the process online. This service will be available from 5pm, 16 August until 5pm, 22 August. The

process is the same for all scripts whether they were marked manually or online. Your script will then be sent to an appeal examiner for re-marking. The appeal fee is €40 per subject for the Leaving Certificate. The appeal fee for the Applied Leaving Certificate is €15.50 per subject. You will get this fee back if your result is upgraded. You can get more information from the Candidate Information Booklet – Leaving Certificate 2019, published by the State Examinations Commission. Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Sometimes you want to have a dessert that is divine but is so easy to make. That is why I believe that every cook should know how to make a crème brulee. For me I love when food is not complicated, there is always a temptation to complicate everything we cook thinking it will be better but this is such a good example to keep it simple, and it will be so tasty. Sometimes the only debate is whether to use cream or milk.

Ingredients (Makes 8) 600ml milk ½ Vanilla pod cut, seeds removed 10 egg yolks 60g caster sugar plus 100g for glaze Method Preheat oven to 150º C Put the milk along with the vanilla in a pot and bring it to a gentle simmer. Once it has heated allow it to cool to infuse. Strain the mixture. Mix the egg yolks and sugar together, add the milk infusion then pass it through a sieve. Place this mixture in 8 ramekins, put these on a tray and place warm water around ramekins until it comes up to ¾ of the ramekin. Cook for 30 minutes until the custard has set, a gentle shake should determine this, if the custard wobbles put it back in the oven for another 5 minutes. Allow them to cool. To serve sprinkle sugar over the custard and use a blow torch to caramelise the sugar. If you have not got a blow torch simply turn on the grill, when the grill is hot place a tray with the ramekins under the grill for about 20 seconds. The sugar should be caramelised at this stage.

Movie Review SPIDER MAN FAR FROM HOME Tom Ó Neachtain Spiderman Far From Home is the second MCU Spiderman offering and the seventh live action Spiderman movie and this one is just as good as its predecessor. The film follows Peter Parker and his class on a school trip across Europe. As Peter is given the responsibility of taking over from a recently deceased Tony Stark (Iron Man), an otherworldly hero appears, the aptly named Mysterio. But this isn’t as much a Spiderman movie as it is a Peter Parker movie. We barely see him in his original suit and he is (as the title suggests) far from his home. He gets plenty of funny moments and his relationships with his aunt and his classmates are humorous and well developed. As Mysterio, Jake Gyllenhaal gives a very entertaining but not very intimidating performance compared to his predecessors such as Thanos or Michael Keaton’s Vulture. His motivations are interesting and he gives us one or two fun and imaginative sequences using his special-effects wizardry. The European setting lends itself nicely to the action as it’s always in a new and vibrant location. But it’s nice to have a low stakes Marvel adventure with a good dose of teenage comedy thrown into the mix. Also this movie has probably the most crowd-pleasing mid-credit-scene ever from a Marvel movie. And the big finale is enjoyable but feels like wasted potential considering that Mysterio can create anything using his holograms and drones. Overall Spiderman Far From Home has fun, globetrotting action, some great characters and feels like a nice palatecleanser after the intensity of Endgame. I’d like to give a special mention to Dutch actor Rutger Hauer the star of Blade Runner and Batman Begins who died recently. Tom Ó Neachtain is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne
