Dingle Film Club
Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 17th September when the feature will be Downton Abbey. A huge success on the small screen, Downton Abbey continues the story of the Crawley
family, wealthy owners of a large estate in the English countryside in the early 20th century. The Crawleys and their intrepid staff prepare for the most important moment of their lives. A royal visit from the King and Queen of England will unleash scandal, romance and intrigue that will leave the future of Downton hanging in the balance The following wee, on Tuesday September 24th the feature will be the documentary film Gaza, a beautiful portrait of everyday Gazan citizens, leading meaningful lives beyond the rubble of perennial conflict. In this cinematic journey through the beleagured territory we get a portrait of its ordinary people who attempt to lead meaningful lives beyond the rubble of perennial conflict. Gaza brings together an eloquent, resilient and courageous group of souls, whose struggle, resilience and sense of family goes to the very heart of humanity...a people whose lives are shaped by conflict but not defined by it 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes Richie Williams MENS SHED. What a wonderful facility the Dingle Men's Shed is providing a much needed outlet for people of all ages to meet and take part in various activities from gardening to timber repairs and general maintenance. Fr Jim Sheehy is to be commended for his foresight in offering the use of his farmyard buildings and yard in Ballintaggart to the group who converted most of the available space into comfortable rooms and spacious work areas. Membership is still open so if interested just come and join the group from 11a.m. to 1p.m. any weekday and a warm welcome is indeed assured from the group who have made the place an important part of their week. PEIL. Good luck to the boys in green and gold in Croke Park on this Saturday and lets hope we will see another great sporting game of Gaelic Football at its best between the two top teams in the country this year. The Annual under 10 Football Blitz organised by the Dingle Bord Na nÓg committee in memory of John Sheehy for West Kerry Clubs will be held in Pairc An Aghasaigh on Saturday Sept 21st starting at 10a.m. Dingle Senior team are due to play Austin Stacks in the County Championship also in Dingle on that weekend with the exact time and date to be fixed shortly. The Annual Tommy Griffin over 35s Tournament will be held on Saturday September 28th so plenty of football and enjoyment on offer to players and supporters over the next few weeks. DINGLE MARATHON. Following the hugely successful 11th Dingle Marathon over the popular Slea Head Course the organisers wish to express their sincere thanks to the public of West Kerry particularly those effected by the road closures for their patience and cooperation before during and after the event. The participants were high in their praise for the warm welcome and encouragement they received from start to finish of both the half and full marathons and the excellant stewarding all over the course. Between both events over 2,600 athletes in total took part with at least another 1,000 people between families and supporters coming out to cheer on their heroes many of whom were competing for the first time.
the next few weeks. This survey deals primarily with the way shoppers and local business owners see and feel about various aspects of life in the town centre such as parking, variety of shops, purpose and frequency of their visits and best and worst experiences in business premises in the area. Farming News Louis Murchan HOGAN GETS TRADE COMMISSION It has been confirmed that Ireland’s nominee to the European Commission, Phil Hogan, will take on the role as Commissioner for Trade in the new European Commission. For the last five years, Commissioner Hogan has occupied the agriculture and rural development position in the commission. It is understood that the new team of commissioners, and their positions, will now go before the European Parliament for ratification. The commissioner’s assignment to the trade job was welcomed by his MEPs and other colleagues in the European Parliament. This is a very important portfolio for both the Union and Ireland and his appointment is a clear recognition of the good work Commissioner Hogan did as agriculture commissioner over the last five years. This is also the first time Ireland has been given the significant trade portfolio at the commission, which is increasingly important now with many free trade agreements on the horizon, and can be of enormous benefit to Ireland, especially in a post-Brexit scenario when we need to diversify and grow new markets. Not since the Days of the late Great Peter Sutherland, have we held such a powerful and prestigious position within the EU. Meanwhile, the agriculture portfolio will be taken by Poland’s Janusz Wojciechowski. MEAT FACTORY PROTESTS AND TALKS TO AVERT FURTHER PROTESTS It must be said with great disappointment in relation to the beef dispute that delegates from the meat industry (MMI) have now refused to meet with farmer organisations. Unfortunately, you can't resolve a dispute without talks, and both sides must be willing to compromise. This again, unfortunately seems to be the case. The meat industry representatives said that they are not willing to talk, unless the protest pickets outside factories are removed. The farmers protesting indicated that they would be willing to stand back, during the negotiations, but are not willing to introduce a blanket withdrawal well in advance but just during the talks. That may seem reasonable to some, but not to the likes of Larry Goodman, Cormac Healy and their colleagues, in the Meat Industry. One also wonders if the talks were heading anywhere, with no representation from the Retailers of Ireland. Surely, they have some impact in the current meat prices, received by farmers, and can bring some influence to bear on the current price of €3.50 per kilo received by farmers. This, in light of the prices charged by all our retailers and multiples, around the country. Their non-attendance is quite confusing considering that MMI claim that it is the Retailers who are insisting on the “4 Movement Restriction, The 70 Day Requirement and the 30 Month Restriction”. It has to first be established who actually is imposing these, and also for whom. Then it must be established who gets the largest cut from this “pie” that we call “the Beef Product”. It certainly isn’t the farmer, at a flat rate of €3.50, but at a retail price of up to €22.00 per kg, where does all this extra money go to, and what additional costs are incurred in getting this beef to the market. The cost of 2 to 3 weeks killing, chilling, hanging, cutting, trimming and displaying, cannot out-reach the cost of two years husbandry, where a farmer invests in infrastructure farm inputs, over-heads, etc. Farmers and Processers, and indeed retailers must be fair. Jobs are at stake. Farmers livelihoods are at stake. Our reputation with the home market and on the world stage as an international beef exporter of quality beef is at stage. It’s Big Boys Rules Now, and time for all involved to grow up, and come to an agreement, whereby everyone gets treated fairly. Let us hope that everyone listens. SILAGE QUALITY The end of the grazing season is fast approaching and, with that, comes the start of introducing silage to the herd. It is important that farmers know the quality of silage in their pit and/or bales before they start introducing it to the herd. Over or underestimating the feeding value of your silage, due to a lack of test results, can be costly. If a forage is not analysed, then farmers will either underestimate or overestimate 10 West Kerry Live
the amount of meal and/or silage required by stock in order to secure optimal animal performance. It’s not too early to get your silage tested. If you haven’t done so, it should definitely be something on your to do list. When it comes to reading your analysis results, there are a few things farmers should look out for. Look at your target feed into milk (FIM) value; it should be somewhere above 105 – it can go up to about 112. The higher this value is, the greater the intakes will be, or potentially be. Look at your target feed into milk (FIM) value; it should be somewhere above 105 – it can go up to about 112. The higher this value is, the greater the intakes will be, or potentially be. However, this is just an indication; I wouldn’t be using it as a predictor of intakes, but it gives you an idea of what your silage quality is like. The neutral detergent fibre (NDF) value will determine this. The higher the value the more fibre there is. It should be in the range of 42-47%. This will make you aware of the amount of fibre that is there; so you know whether or not more fibre is needed. The greater the fibre in the diet the lower the intakes will be. Other good-quality indicators: •
pH – 3.8 to 4.2;
•
Dry matter digestibility (DMD) – 70+;
•
Dry matter (DM) – 25%+.
From a sustainability point of view there is a push on to try and reduce the amount of imported feed on farms; so it is important that we strive to make the best-quality silage that we can. BEEF PROTEST EFFECTING SHEEP PRICE During the week ending September 1, the number of hoggets slaughtered at Department of Agriculture approved sheep export plants was 126 – a decrease of 65 head on the previous week. In addition, the number of spring lambs processed increased by 349 and amounted to 52,695. This week, Kildare Chilling (Monday quote) is offering a base price of 460c/kg +10c/kg QA (payable up to a carcass of 21kg). Overall, when the QA is factored in, this leaves quotes at 455-470c/kg. Again, that’s on a par with last week’s quotes. In addition, cast ewes are making 250-260c/kg in sheep processing plants. APPROVAL FOR 70% ADVANCE PAYMENT FOR 2019 BPS The European Commission has agreed to his request that provision be made for a higher rate of advance payments under the 2019 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and a number of Rural Development Schemes. Following a submission to the EU Commission, the rate of advance payment payable under the BPS from 16thOctober has been increased from 50% to 70%. In addition, the rate of advance payments under Rural Development schemes such as GLAS and the Sheep Welfare Scheme has been increased from 75% to 85%. In relation to the Areas of Natural Constraints (ANC) Scheme in particular, the Minister noted that the total budget for this Scheme has increased again this year to €250m. On foot of changes to EU Regulations, payments under the ANC Scheme will be made in two instalments this year. The initial instalment of 85% is scheduled to commence in mid-September as in previous years. Balancing payments of 15% will then commence in early December. The Department will shortly be writing to all farmers, to outline to them the schedule of payments to be made under various schemes in the coming months. Such payments continue to make a vital contribution to the ongoing sustainability and development of the rural economy. OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS ON THE CAP STRATEGIC PLAN – SWOT ANALYSIS Following on from the latest meeting of the CAP Stakeholder Consultative Committee, there has been an open call for submissions on the CAP Strategic Plan – SWOT. The open call for submissions is part of the CAP post 2020 consultation process, under which each Member State is required to conduct a Strength, Weakness, Opportunity and Threat analysis (SWOT) of the geographic area covered by the CAP Strategic Plan, and to engage with civil society and stakeholders to ensure the SWOT is fully reflective of the situation. The open call for submissions will run for a five-week period from tomorrow, Monday 9 September 2019 to Friday 11 October 2019.
Interested parties and stakeholders can respond to the Open Call for submissions in a number of ways:•
by email to capstrategicplan@agriculture.gov.ie;
• by post to CAP Rural Development Division, Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Floor 4 Centre, Agriculture House, Kildare Street, Dublin 2, D02 WK12 marked “Open call for submissions: CAP Strategic Plan – SWOT analysis”. The consultation document and submission forms will be available from the Department of Agriculture’s web page and the deadline for receipt of submissions is Friday, 11 October 2019. ……AND FINALLY, FINALLY. Here we go again. Wasn’t that a fantastic game in Dublin, last Sunday week. Some people accuse yours truly of being somewhat biased, (and he did have those fifteen minutes to be proud of), but I believe the expression was, “may the best team win”. And they did. Both of them. And, didn’t our boy do well! That was one of the best games of football witnessed since the heady days of First Round Leinster Championship, back in 1991. Faint Praise, indeed. But Lads, let’s try to keep 30 men on the field this time, for the entire game.

And the GAA also got it right too, by reducing ticket prices. How Do You Like Them Apples? Irene Ní Fhlannúra Ireland is currently at the height of its Apple season, yet of the €100 million Irish people spend buying apples every year, only 5% are Irish grown. In the block-buster book on indigenous Irish apples “The Heritage of Apples in Ireland” 2014, Dr. Michael Hennerty, identifies sixty-eight varieties of apples native to Ireland. Apparently, there are over fifty more varieties that were documented in the past but we no longer grow them – that’s a lot of apples! According to the author, we could be enjoying Irish apples all year round, except for a gap from July to mid-August, by which time we would be sick of eating apples and dive into the strawberries instead. Apples have been with us for a long time, growing wild in Central Asia and China ten to twenty million years ago, and through evolution and migration of animals and people came further west around 5000BC. Adam and Eve almost got them banned after the shenanigans in the Garden of Eden, but luckily for us, apples have been happily growing here since about 2000BC. St. Patrick allegedly planted a few apple trees in Armagh, the Orchard County, when he was here and seed funded the first cider house, a native industry continued by the monks right up to quite recent. Apple trees were classed as noble trees, protected by Brehon Law (7th Century) and anyone found damaging an apple tree would have been fined five milking cows at the time. With the growing interest in sustainable agriculture, there has been a small increase in land used for apple trees, both commercially and small-scale projects. Most of the national crop ends up as cider or apple juice, making it difficult to source local apples to eat throughout the year. Even though they might not be as alluring as the more exotic fruits, it is hard to beat our native apples, grown and picked nearby, without the use of chemicals or sprays. “Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread” - first documented in Wales in 1866, and later revised to the more polite version “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. Either way, there is a bit of truth in it. Apples are well known to help with weight loss by curbing the appetite. For those who eat too much, starting a meal with an apple can help reduce the calories eaten at that meal. Even the smell of an apple, can trick the brain into thinking you have eaten one, and so sniffing an apple 20mins before mealtimes lessens your calorie intake. Apples contain vitamin C just under its skin, well known for its immune boosting power, keeping colds and flu at bay as well as creating the glue (collagen) that keeps us together both physically and mentally. Quercetin, also in apples, is a lesser known antioxidant, but a powerful player against inflammation, asthma and allergies. Another beneficial nutrient in apples is catechin - known to improve both brain and muscle function. Apples stewed with chamomile can shorten the course of unspecified diarrhoea in children 14 West Kerry Live
and the elderly, handy to know this time of year! Where apples really climb to superfruit stardom is in the non-digestible part of the fruit, the parts we don’t absorb – its fibre, pectin and polyphenols. These feed our friendly intestinal bacteria, particularly in the large intestine, reducing inflammation, risk of diverticular disease and colon cancer. Bacterial imbalance in the colon is now recognised as a trigger for metabolic disorders including diabetes and obesity, another good reason to have an apple a day, at least! Pectin, most noted for setting apple jam and jellies, has been central to the revolutionary treatment for exposure to nuclear radiation. Vassili Nesterenko (1934-2008), a physician from Belarus and a former director of the Institute of Nuclear Energy at the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, pioneered a treatment with apple pectin for children living in highly contaminated areas and eating highly contaminated food, by reducing Cesium 137 levels in the exposed children. In a postChernobyl programme (1996–2007), 160,000 children received the pectin treatment. As a result, the Cs137 levels in their organs decreased after each course by an average of 30-40% with significant reductions noted in as little as 16 days. Apple pectin has also been found to prevent the
deadliest radioisotope, Plutonium-239 from absorbing in the gastrointestinal tract. With this kind of backing, it would certainly do no harm to include an apple or two a day, particularly if working or living in polluted or toxic environments. Raiding apple trees was one of our favourite outings growing up in town (I won’t say where), and although the trees are gone, our gang have disbanded, I can now justify our actions! I will happily pass on the blueprint for a good raid to my children and hope they will be fruitful in their quest to get local apples, after all, neither my kids nor the apples fall far from the tree! From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Eleven drown in Smerwick Harbour From – York Herald, 4 November 1820 We regret to state that the Sally of Workington [West Cumbria] was totally wrecked yesterday at Smerwick Harbour and it is most melancholy to add that out of twelve persons on board at that time, eleven met with a watery grave. The tragedy unfolded in sight of numerous spectators who could use no exertions for their deliverance. She was bound from Trinidad to Hull, with a valuable cargo of sugar, and was forced by stress of weather into Smerwick Harbour about a week ago. The Captain conceived he left her riding in perfect security and went to Cork on Saturday to purchase materials for the vessel. However, the violence of the late gales broke her cables and drove her ashore. None of her cargo has been saved, and among the eleven persons who were drowned we are sorry to include two Revenue officers of Dingle, John Neligan and J. Kennedy. The name of the soul survivor is George Foster.

Warning to emigrants to the United States From – Tralee Chronicle, 16 June 1863 The following extract from a letter just received from a resident in Iowa, United States, to a relative in Tralee, is worth the attention of intending emigrants:Le Clair, Scott County, Iowa, May 23 1863 – ‘I wish we had taken your advice and gone to --[blanked out] instead of coming to this hateful country. Nothing but war seems to satisfy them now. They put the Conscription Act in force, and have ordered all Europeans to either swear allegiance to this country, or leave by the 11th July.’ [The Conscription Act came into force in March 1863, during the American Civil War of 1861 -1865].
Smack sinks near Fenit
Rockfall on Connorhill
From – Kerry Evening Post, 24 November 1877
From – Kerry Weekly Reporter, 8 October 1892.
On Wednesday afternoon it blew a strong gale. A smack, with a crew of three men, and having some 40 tons of stone ballast, came to anchor at the Samphire Roads. She was deep in the water, and the sea repeatedly broke over her, in addition to which, from the straining she must have sprung a serious leak.
On Thursday night a large ledge of the overhanging rock fell down on the Connorhill road, completely blocking it up and preventing cars from passing. Mr. John Dowde [sic] , of Kilmore, who was on his way home from Dingle, had a narrow escape, having only just passed when the rock fell. The obstruction has been removed, it having been blown up with dynamite.
The men worked at the pumps for some time, but finding the water gaining on them, they slipped the cable and got alongside another boat. A few minutes after the men left the smack it sank in about five fathoms of water. She was the property of Mr. Robert Kelly of Spa.

Saving Energy Tips at home SwitchCost Your Energy Provider

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in
some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise? (and save hundreds of euro every year)
A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Hans Blank, 1952 - 2019 An Ode to Made Impressions is an exhibition that brings together a lifetime of artworks by achieved artist and special friend Hans Blank. The first major retrospective to date, it celebrates Hans’ career which spanned over 40 years and a friendship with us here at The Greenlane Gallery for more than 25 years. It offers us an opportunity to experience the entirety of Hans’ work and showcase his sensual use and tactile exploration of his chosen medium, cast bronze. Born in Wormerveer, The Netherlands, Hans (1952 - 2019) attended the Royal Academy of Expressive Visual Arts in Amsterdam. He received the URIOT award in 1975. In the mid-eighties Hans, with his wife Marijka, sailed around Europe in a thirty-eight meter, two-mast schooner. In the cargo hull Hans had a full working studio. As they sailed around Ireland they happened upon the small fishing town of Dingle. There they met local man Paddy Flannery who had a keen interest in Dutch trawlers. A firm friendship developed between the two families which later led to Hans and his family buying a house and working studio in Dingle.
- An Ode to Made Impressions The Greenlane Gallery Dingle invites you to a special commemorative exhibition of artworks by artist & friend
Hans Blank Exhibition Opens Saturday 21st September, 6.30pm - 8.30pm Continues until Saturday 19th October
Working primarily in bronze, Hans fluctuated between contemporary and historical subjects. While he addressed all manner of topics his preferred theme maintained a consistent maritime character. He studied shipwrecks, trawlers, dike workers, lifeboats and various other nautical themes. His many works depict St Brendan’s voyage, Viking vessels, sailors, Irish fishermen and our wonderful Celtic boats and Irish currach. Within his subject Hans was also preoccupied by themes of archaism; in the decline within a structure's building, its foundation and in the materials as they fell into disrepair. He expressed these concerns primarily through figurative representation, but where detail became secondary to form. He brought forth the light and shadow contours of his subject to highlight its shape and movement. Often the actual material would take over, almost becoming the subject matter itself. Hans sought much of his inspiration from Ireland; from our rich history and Celtic mythology - our ogham stones, menhirs, standing stones and stone circles. He used Celtic symbolism and metaphor to unveil the mystery of his subject while maintaining a sense of the magical. The wild Atlantic west Kerry coast in particular became an important source of influence to Hans. The historical and archaeological stories from the Blasket Islands, the lives of the islanders and their tales from the sea intrigued him. Blank said of it ‘The island is always special for me. Some years ago I spent time on board a salvage vessel, lying day and night beside the Great Blasket Island. The island looked majestic at night and left an indelible impression on me’. The Blasket Islanders currach prevailed for many decades in Hans work. He was especially interested in the prehistoric migration of cultures across oceans from continent to continent, and in the transportation by simple sea vessels. The prehistoric shapes of his ships and rafts, produced in bronze and often combined with stone, are going back to ancient nations and their culture. The Irish currach for Hans encompassed this discussion and became a recurring subject. ‘The borderline between water and shore is intriguing and extraordinary. The boat was of great importance to the island population. The employment and safe passage of these boats to and from the island, at times, became a matter of life and death. The construction, form and shape of the currach are very special and a constant source of inspiration to me.’ In his own opinion Hans did not subscribe to any one artistic movement, past or present. He described his style as a personal statement of an outward expression, which he felt was rooted in the visual world. Hans aspired to achieve art that was both cultural and national while yet remaining deeply personal. Indeed, every finger impress appears to be in the right place and serves the right purpose. The result is a powerful and evocative collection of sculpture that was accurately developed from a robust practice which links Dutch and Irish tradition. We were deeply saddened by the passing of Hans earlier this year and we would like to offer our sincere condolences and sympathies to his sons Jan and Rick, and to his family and friends.

The Ferriter Family/
early 17th century. These findings will be discussed in more detail in one of the talks at the next Ferriter Family Gathering.
Na Firtéaraigh
This Gathering takes place just after Easter, on 13-15 April 2020, and will be based in the Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Dún Chaoin and Dingle areas, with talks and lectures taking place in The Blasket Centre in Dún Chaoin. Many people will travel from elsewhere in Ireland, but particularly from the US for this and an invitation is extended to the local Ferriter Family and to others who are interested to participate in some or all of the events. A website will soon be launched, which will provide further information about registration, talks, events, outings and other activities.

For further details on aspects of the history and archaeology of the Ferriters, visit Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. We are open until Sunday 15 September from 10.00 am – 5.00 pm. Enjoy a tea/coffee and a browse in our bookshop; Wi-Fi available. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram. Buail isteach ag Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne! Tá siopa leabhar, caifé agus Wi-Fi ar fáil ann. Bíonn an Músaem ar oscailt gach lá go dtí an 15ú Meán Fómhair, 10.00 r.n. – 5.00 i.n. Cuirfear fáilte romhat! Teagmháil: 066-9156333/info@westkerrymuseum.com. Féach www. westkerrymuseum.com. An té atá ag maireachtaint i gCorca Dhuibhne, tá a fhios aige cá bhfuil Baile an Fheirtéaraigh agus cur amach aige ar an gceantar máguaird. Maidir le ainm na háite, tháinig sinsear na bhFirtéarach go hÉirinn b’fhéidir ag deireadh an 12ú aois, aimsir ionradh na nAngla-Normannach, agus go Ciarraí i lár an 13ú aois. Bhí talamh acu i nDún Urlann, Márthain, Dún Chaoin, Baile Fheirtéaraigh agus Cill Maolchéadair, agus tá a sliocht fós sna ceantracha san. Tá roinnt séadchomharthaí ann fós a bhfuil baint acu leis na Firtéaraigh, Caisleán an Fhirtéaraigh, an teampall agus sáipéal paróiste na Meánaoise i nDún Urlann, ina measc. Agus bhí tigh i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh acu leis, agus b’fhéidir gurb í sin an chúis go bhfuil ainm an teaghlaigh luaite ana-mhór leis an áit i gcónaí. Anyone who lives on the Dingle Peninsula has surely heard of the village of Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, but how much do you know about the family that gave the village its name? The ancestors of the Ferriters (whose surname was probably originally ‘Le Fureteur’), first came to Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion, in the late 12th century, and were in Kerry by the mid-13th century. They obtained lands in the Dún Urlann, Márthain, Dún Chaoin, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh and Cill Maolchéadair areas, where you will still find families of that surname today. There are some archaeological monuments that can definitely be associated with the family. Ferriter’s Castle, a tower-house probably of 15th-century date, now very ruinous, but would have once appeared something like what Gallarus Castle looks like today. The Ferriters would have been patrons of the parish church at Dún Urlann, and many of the family, and those who worked for them and lived on their estates, would have been buried in the graveyard there. The original village settlement of Baile an Fheirtéaraigh is probably also due to the presence of a house belonging to the family being built here, possibly after the tower-house had been abandoned, and there are other place names in the area (e.g. Ferriters Cove [attested in 1598] {Cuan an Chaoil as Gaeilge}; Ferritors (sic) Quarter [attested c. 1660] {Ceathrú an Fheirtéaraigh as Gaeilge}, and several others). See www.logainm.ie for these and further details. There have been several famous ‘sons’ of the family, including the poet and revolutionary, Piaras Firtéar (c. 1600 – 1653) and the folklorist and writer Pádraig Firtéar (1856-1924), and more recent holders of the name have contributed greatly to various aspects of life both here in Ireland and in the adopted country of many of the family, the United States of America. It is from that country that the initiative came to institute the 'Ferriter Family Gathering' events, with some of these taking place in and around the village of Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Members of this family from several countries attend, with most being from the United States and from West Kerry. They gather to celebrate the family legacy and the cultural landscape of their heritage. Piaras Firtéar is a particularly venerated ancestor of this family, and recent DNA research has indicated that many, if not all of those now living with known Ferriter blood are descended from an ancestor who lived in the 22 West Kerry Live

Starting at 9.30pm we bring you a brilliant night of music featuring the diverse and wonderful talents of: •
Niall McCabe & Band. (Folk, Soul, Rock & Roll)
•
Paddy Dennehy ( Folk , Rock)
•
Surika ( Local singer songwriter)
Niall McCabe is a singer/songwriter from Clare Island off the coast of Co.Mayo. Bringing together the deep silences of Island life and the traditional music of his childhood to the heart wrenching soul sounds he heard from the other side of the Atlantic and the pop music coming over the airwaves he is creating a style of his own he calls ‘Transatlantic Soul’, neither folk nor soul but drifting in the seas between. Niall is currently lending his voice to Irish trad and pop trailblazers Beoga touring the united states and Europe. Paddy Dennehy draws influences from as far back as the early 1900s right up to the present day. You can hear hints of Tom Waits’ theatrical warble; feel the passionate intensity of Louis Armstrong’s delivery; and be stirred by poignancy reminiscent of that of Hozier and Mick Flannery. A variety of influences then; all of of them blended together to form a live performance that is at once unforgettable and utterly unique. Surika is a local singer songwriter. In August 2015 she released her debut Ep 'The Sound of Rain' as 'Sorcha NB', consisting of six original tracks. Since her debut Surika has opened for the likes of Ham SandwicH, Sample Answer, Liam Frost and has played festivals such as Other Voices, Electric Picnic and Vantasival. Although her sound has continued to develop, her underlying style continues. Surika's songs sound effortless, yet heartfelt, with a strong poetic edge.

Manx Shearwater Alert! The Bird Watch Ireland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings. They can be attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs. If you find one contact: Britta (Ventry and Dingle) - 087 2435845), Richard (Ballyferriter and Ballydavid) - 086 3168150, Catherine (Ventry and Dingle) – 087 9834823

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís September got off to a great start here at the Dingle Hub with the news that Dingle Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) has been announced as a finalist in the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland’s (SEAI) Energy Awards which encourage and reward excellence in energy management. Twenty-two organisations across seven categories have made it through to the Gala Awards ceremony on Wednesday, 16 October where winners will be named. We’re really looking forward to the event and appreciate the recognition of the work and effort that has been put in to date to build a sustainable society for the benefit of our environment and our community. The recent visit from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities to the Dingle Hub on Monday, 2nd September proved to be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the absolute necessity of working with communities to co-create solutions to tackle the challenge of climate change. A big thank you ESB Networks and IoT Farm Ambassador Denis Galvin, Lispole and StoreNet participant Noel Malone, Gortadoo for taking the time to share the considerable knowledge and insights they have learned through project participation. Our visitors stressed how valuable this information will be to them as they consider decisions that will impact all of us in the future. We’re looking forward to joining the Farmer’s Forum at the Dingle Food Festival again this year and hope to see many of you at An Díseart on Friday, 4th Oct from 8pm to 10pm. Work on the Feasibility Study for Anaerobic Digestion on the Dingle Peninsula is progressing well and we look forward to sharing what we are learning with you. We will showcase demonstrators for those who would like to understand more about AD technology and we’ll also discuss options for co-operative mechanisms to enable community ownership of the project once an economically viable model is determined. A socio-economic study of the Dingle Peninsula is currently underway which will provide important baseline information for the region and enable us to measure the impact of work currently underway in future years. As part of this study, Dingle historic town centre has been selected for a Town Centre Health Check (TCHC) which takes a valuable snapshot of the town, of local expectations and helps us to confirm and provide evidence of hunches we all may have. It is an opportunity for local people to record their views of the town to help inform future planning and decisions. The TCHC will be undertaken by students from IT Tralee in the coming weeks where they will survey both business owners and people on the street. Please support their work and use this as an opportunity to have your say about your town. Ahoy Coders! We’re in planning mode at the moment for the Autumn session of Coder Dojo 32 West Kerry Live
which will start in mid-October. Details on dates and registration will be in the next issue and will also be sent to previous participants. As always, we welcome all those who would like to volunteer to be Dojo mentors and can help out with logistics and administration. The more people we have involved, the more we can do and there is certainly no shortage of events and activities that we can offer to our young coders. Advertising will start shortly through KETB for a 12 week part-time course for those interested in becoming Community Energy Mentors. The course will commence the week of Oct 16th and will be of interest to voluntary sector individuals who wish to upskill and support the transition to a low carbon society and those who have an interest in pursuing careers in the area of energy sustainability and will progress to further education on completion of this course. Contact deirdre@dinglehub.com if you would like further details. Dingle Creativity & Innovation Hub and An Gailearaí, Donegal will host a simultaneous live event on Culture Night, Friday 20th September 2019. We’re very excited to be working on a 12-week film workshop, “Principles of Film: Intro to Theory and Practice”, which will be hosted by the Hub and facilitated by film lecturer Ciara Barrett. Ciara has lectured in film studies and audiovisual culture at Trinity, Sacred Heart University and NUIG, where she coordinated both the BA in Film Studies and the MA in Digital Media. She has published on a wide range of film-related topics, including performance and representation in Classical Hollywood Cinema, contemporary genre filmmaking and Irish animation. Watch this space for details. Our next Creative Networking event takes place on Tuesday 17th September 11.30a.m. to 1p.m. with guest speaker Seán Linnane, NEWKD to give some insight into LEADER funding. We’re particularly interested in exploring alternative funding streams and initiating collaborations between artists, organisations, universities, etc. Come along for a coffee and chat. We have our first piece of art currently being exhibited here in the Dingle Hub. The Ventry Egg, creation of the renowned sculptor and artist John Holstead, was conceived as an accompaniment to a television programme commissioned by TG4 called ‘The Men of Ventry’, produced by Brenda McKenna. Seniors: Our seniors, sponsored by Kelly’s Londis Topshop and Larkins Bar and Restaurant, took on Currow at home on Sunday last in Division 3, Round 11 of the Kerry County Senior Football League 2019. Rain began to fall as soon as John Dineen from Fossa got proceedings underway in the Paddy Burke Memorial Park. Milltown Castlemaine lined out without many of their regular starters who were unavailable for various reasons. The first half saw the visitors notching up many scores to give them a 7 point lead at the short whistle, 1/13 to 1/06. Dylan O’ Neill was in super kicking form for the home side, converting several frees throughout the game along with a penalty in the final quarter to reduce the deficit. Currow’s Luke Fitzgerald and John Buckley converted much of the scores for the opposition both from play and place kicking. Currow, managed by Kieran Scanlon and Paudie Collins took away 3 valuable points at the final whistle. Full time score: Currow: 1/20, Milltown/ Castlemaine 2/12. Cromane News Jane Casey Cromane GAA UNDER-14s: Central Region U14 Division 2 final result: GGC 2-10, Castleisland Desmonds 4-9 Hard luck to the GGC under-14 side who suffered a tough loss last Thursday evening in this final played in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. GGC trailed by 0-7 to 1-6 at the break and a Desmonds’ goal in the first minute of the second half put them in control. The GGC lads battled hard and a goal from Joshua O'Sullivan in the 47th minute left just a point between the sides, 1-10 to 2-8. However, just when it looked that GGC were going to push on they were hit with a sucker-punch when Desmonds goaled from their next attack. From here on Desmonds were on top adding another goal before the end. GGC hit the last goal of the game a fantastic strike from Keith Moriarty. This was a tough loss in this Central Region Division 2 final as the GGC lads went through the group stage unbeaten. They have all improved throughout the year and they still have a lot of football in front of them. They also had a great experience by playing in one of the best pitches in the country: Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. GGC scorers: Joshua O'Sullivan, Keith Moriarty 1-2 each, Jack McGrath 0-3 (0-2 frees), Brian Cahill 0-2, Darragh Crosby 0-1. Team: Jamie Casey; Daniel O'Sullivan, Fionn O’Sullivan, Colm Kingdon; Darragh Crosby, Tony Óg Duffy, Jamie O’Sullivan; Liam Hayes, Liam O’Neill; Brian Cahill, Keilen O’Sullivan, Ryan O’Connor; Keith Moriarty, Conor Hayes. Jack McGrath. Subs: Joshua O'Sullivan, Jed DandoSwitzer, Alex Scannell, Ross Bowell, Mikey Griffin.
UNDERAGE TRAINING: Our Sunday morning underage training is back up and running. The action starts each Sunday at 11.15am at Cromane GAA pitch. FIXTURES: Tuesday, September 17 - Mid Kerry Under-14 championship: Glenbeigh-Glencar/ Cromane (GGC) v Laune Rangers (blue) in Cromane at 6.30pm. RETIREMENT: The red carpet was rolled out for our retiring principal when the Community of Cromane thanked and acknowledged Seamus Shaughnessy on his retirement following 42 years of service as a teacher and latterly as Principal of Scoil Realt Na Mhara He was very surprised to be delivered by a chauffeur driven vintage car to Cromane National School where a great turnout of students, past and present along with parents and friends gave him a wonderful welcome and an emotional send off. Seamus planted a Commemoration Tree and received great praise for his years of service. The children were entertained in the marquee with a disco and facepainting. There were presentations by the Board of Management, Parents Association, wider community and many well wishers. There was even a video production of his own former school classmates reminiscing about Seamus as a student himself. The youngest and oldest children in the School presented Seamus with a gift in recognition of his contribution. Many commented on the number of former students who have moved on with high achievements in their fields of endeavour largely due to the solid and creative education received under Seamus’s stewardship. The highlight of the night was Seamus retrieving the keys of the school and handing them to the new Principal Elaine Kelliher and wishing her the best. We all wish Seamus and his wife Phil the very best in what will be a very active retirement, we hope he continues to enjoy his golf and travel in his new phase of life.

Keel GAA SENIORS: Our seniors travelled to Gneeveguilla on Sunday to face the top of the table team for the final round of the Division 3 County Senior Football League. From the beginning Gneeveguilla retained a lot of the possession and were accurate in their scoring of each opportunity they got. However, ten minutes into the first half Martin Burke got Keel’s first score who kicked some excellent scores throughout the game. Tommy Buckley and James Foley also put one over each to get some scores on the board for the visitors before half time. Half time score, Keel 0-03, Gneeveguilla 2-10. It was certainly Keel’s half in the second half with some excellent work from Aaron Murphy, Tommy Buckley, Martin Burke and Gary Murphy. Ceardlann Haiku Neomat na h-inspioráide, neomat na fírinne, sin é an haiku. Dán gairid, trí líne. Dán gur geall le ceamara é, ag tapú nóiméid draíochta. An tSeapáin is baile dúchasach dó, ach aithníonn furmhór an domhain anois é. Ar nós dáin dírigh na hÉireann, dán siollabach is ea ó bhonn é, 5,7 agus 5 siolla i dtrí líne an dáin, cé ná cloítear go daingean leis an gcomhaireamh siollabach sin i dteangacha eile.

The moment of inspiration, the moment of truth, that is the haiku moment, according to Gabriel, the well known poet and major proponent of haiku in Ireland. It is a form of poetry native to Japan. A very brief form, it consists, in the original Japanese, of seventeen syllables, 5, 7 and 5 per line. In other languages, the syllabic restrictions are not normally followed closely, but the moment of surprise, the unexpectedness of the link, the 'cutting word' remain primary characteristics. The links given below will give you a foretaste of the ceardlann. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmj54hpqMyo&t=131s https://irishwriterscentre.ie/blogs/news/haiku-as-gaeilge?page=3 http://roghaghabriel.blogspot.ie/ All are welcome. A Tale of Two Patricks
Padre Pio
Diane Hall
Beidh Aifreann ar an Aoine, 20 Meán Fómhair, ag 7.30 i.n. i Séipéal Naomh Uinseann, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Beannú le mitín a chaith Padre Pio.
Ah, the young gentlemen of Dingle. Young, handsome, and oh, so polite. While in Dingle for a writing seminar with Bay Path University in the United States, I was struck by the chivalry and grace of two young men I met who made me feel comfortable and respected while far away from home.

Patrick was our guide as we carefully navigated the rocky terrain up the mountain on horseback. In his thick Irish accent he informed me the horse I was riding, Bob, was a champion. In 2012 he won Ireland’s ploughing contest. As he said this Patrick smiled, clearly proud to be able to boast those bragging rights. Though new to riding, he treated me with respect and took the time to show me the ropes. He treated me like a lady. He was funny. He shared his knowledge of Dingle with my friend and I, and he made the two hour ride a trip of a lifetime. He stopped to let us take pictures and he kindly took pictures of us whenever we asked. We even took time to explore a new path. Patrick at Dingle Horse Riding is a gem. Then there’s Patrick at Benner’s restaurant on Main Street. Having just turned 21, with his boyish good looks, brilliant smile and clever wit, he makes for an excellent server, dazzling customers with his dynamic personality. Yes, he even took a picture of our group. In fact he took four. A young man with a strong work ethic, I hope he realizes his dreams of going off to college. He surely deserves it and he made our dining experience memorable. In a time when young men are sometimes criticized for their lifestyle and lack of integrity these two Patricks of Dingle should be proud. Two of the finest men I have come across in my travels, two young men who make me hopeful for the future. Diane Hall recently spent time in Dingle as part of Bay Path University's MFA in Creative Nonfiction Writing summer seminar.

Soccer Notes: Castle Celtic took on Asdee Rovers in the Celsius Cup in their first competitive game of the new Season.
Damien Finn, who has resurrected his career more times than Jesus himself. Asdee had a chance to pull one back late in the game when they were awarded a penalty. With Eoin Kennedy standing tall at 4 foot nothing, dived the wrong way only to be relieved that the ball smashed off the crossbar. And the follow up was headed wide. Castle controlled the rest of the game seeing a good competitive start to the year but with plenty players to come in and things to improve upon gives food for thought for Manager Conor Boden, and Assistant Manager Brian Goggin. Team: Eoin Kennedy, Cormac Cronin, David O’Brien, Shane Kenny, Damien McMahon,Steven Speirs, Maurice Slattery, Enda Whelan, Dara Butler, Thomas Butler, Brandon Hoare. Subs: Damien Finn. FT Castle Celtic 3 – 0 Asdee Rovers.
Ladies:1st Mary Farrell; 2nd Avila Fitzgerald, Joan Moriarty.
First half was a slow burner with each team creating very little in the way of chances to test the opposing keeper. The deadlock was broken in the 30th minute by last year’s league top scorer.
Interval: Rita Walsh, Elke Hockstrate, Marcia Ganter, Maureen Dowling.
From an Eoin Kennedy Kick out, Enda Whelan contesting in the air was like a salmon out of water with his leap, luckily his midfield partner and all round nice guy, Maurice Slattery was able to latch onto the breaking ball, with two players around him, he impressed with some fancy footwork (like a Kerry man in coppers last Sunday night) threaded a through ball to Brandon Hoare’s feet which opened him up to being one on one with the Keeper. Bearing down on goal, Brandon almost had time to make a cuppa tea before striking a wonderful shot straight at the keeper. Luckily for Brandon the ball ended up in the back of the net as a result of the keepers parry. This wonderful strike opened the game up for the remaining time in the half with more chances being created. HT Castle Celtic 1 – 0 Asdee Rovers The Second half was more of an exciting affair, within 10 minutes of the restart Castle had doubled their lead. Castle had an attack broken down on the left wing, With Asdee playing the ball around the back massive pressure was put on by our very own Big Foot Thomas Butler, who by his own admission stated that he has remarkable feet for a big lad, but don’t worry we all told him that they were canoes not feet. Thomas pressed the defender in Asdee’s box until a mistake was made, the ball landed at the feet of Brandon Hoare again and he slotted it coolly passed the keeper to double his game tally. The Third goal was a team effort on castles part with the ball worked through the lines out from the back, fell to Enda Whelan on the right wing in line with the box cutting inside, he played a dodgy bobbly ball to the feet of Brandon, who played an equally dodgy ball back to Enda, still cutting in along the edge of the box, spotted the darting run by Brandon Hoare, Enda Flicked the back passed the defender with the outside of his boot, Brandon betting the offside trap let his shot fly hitting the roof on the net at the near post.
Gents: 1st John McEnery; 2nd Pat Moore. Interval: Mike Dowling, Pat O’Connor. Mystery: Joan Cantillon, Declan Moriarty Active Retired Lunches with music, light entertainment and bingo: Every Tuesday 1 – 4 pm in the Club Rooms. World Handicap System
The article penned by Golf Correspondent, Brian Keogh, described the course as ‘a delight and one of the most enjoyable in golf given the beauty of the terrain’.
An agreement to implement a pretty radical change to how golf handicaps are applied has been achieved between the major Golf Associations and is expected to commence introduction in late 2020. The new approach, known as World Handicap System (WHS) is designed to provide a more consistent measure of players’ ability between different regions of the World. It is based on the USGA Course and Slope Rating System whereby a ‘Slope Rating’ is calculated by a team of experts for each course to reflect its relative difficulty. The objectives include encouraging all players to maintain a golf handicap, to enable golfers of differing ability to bring their handicap to any course in the World (and be competitive) and to ensure that a golfer’s handicap more accurately reflects his or her ability.
Ceann Sibéal was featured in Tee to Green, the Golf Supplement in the Irish Independent on Thursday 5th September last.
The focus of the article was on the plans drawn up by Ken Kearney, Golf Architect for Course Improvement based in turn on the philosophy of original designer, Eddie Hackett. Mr Hackett is reputed to have said in designing Golf Courses, “I try to dress up what the Good Lord provides”. The article also provided some interesting and humorous insights into the history of the Club and its origins on the other side of Dingle. A fine promotion for our beautiful course.
In effect, a ‘Course Handicap’ will be calculated for each golfer when playing any course based on the Slope Rating for that course. Thus, a player’s handicap will vary between courses based on course difficulty as measured by its Slope Rating. For example, on a course where the Slope Rating rates it as of medium difficulty, the player’s Course Handicap will be lower than on a course with a ‘more difficult’ rating. In addition, handicaps will be calculated using the best 8 of the last 20 rounds played (no more 0.1s back!) with both competitive and recreational rounds able to count for handicap. Expect to see lots of information being circulated during 2020 prior to its launch. More information from https://www.golfnet.ie/news/golfnet/3973/ new-world-handicap-system-prepares-for-implementation-from-2020 or from https://www.randa.org/WorldHandicapSystem

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Cluiche ceannais caide sinsir na hÉireann. Déanfaidh sé deireadh seachtaine suaite ag an mhuintir seo againne. Má bhíonn an misneach a léiríodar níos luaithe a fhág ar chómhtharrac iad beidh an lá leo. Glac leis go bhfuil gach cleas ag na Jeacíní, ach má buailtear go luath iad ní bheidh aon nath ag Ciarraí an cor a thabhairt dóibh. Tá iliomad cleas a chuireann mearbhall ar imreoirí agus go mbaineann sé dá misneach .Má éiríonn linn iad a chur dá mbuile luath sa chluiche bheadh an- sheans againn. Is mó duine a déarfadh leat gur fhág Ciarraí an bhua ina ndiaidh an lá cheanna. Caid ar chaid ar fóraíl. Chailleadar seans ceart ar thrí bháide. D’fhéadfá bheith ag caint go maidin, Gaoth Mhór agus ní éireodh leat a rá go cinnte conas mar bheidh. Chailleas cúpla euro an lá cheanna agus mé ag tuar bua ’ar éigin’ do Chiarraí. Sea mhuis, cuirfead pinginí an babhta seo chomh maith. Tá tosaithe iontach againn agus má bhíonn aon chaideanna le deáramh ag teacht isteach chucha déanfaidh siad slad. Tá an Móránach ag imirt i lár na páirce go diail agus bhí a chomhbhádóir lán chliste. Ainneoin a bhfuil ráite léiríodar gur imreóirí maithe iad agus ní dhein aon duine don bhfóireann eile mórán slaid. Is léir gur fear géar bainisteóir caide Chiarraí agus seans go bhfuil léite aige ar dhraoídóireacht Ghavin. Is dócha go mbeidh gach fear nó bean caide Ciarraíoch ag gabháilt Soir Ó Thuaidh ar an Satharn nó Dé hAoine. Cailíní Nár bhuaidh Foireann sóisir camógaíochta Chiarraí Craobh na hÉireann ar an nDomhnach seo caite, a gcéad cheann riamh. Cómhgháirdes leo, bail ó Dhia ortha. Abhar eile misnigh. Cad déarfá leis an nghrianghraf? Ceiliúradh Is trua go bhfuil Ceiliúradh An Bhlascaoid agus Chraobh sinsir caide na hÉirean ag teacht treasna ar a chéile, ach dar liom ná deanfaidh sé aon díobhail do aoinne mar go bhfuil bróga éagsula ar an dá dhream. Returning to Ireland Question My son has been living in Australia for the last fifteen years and is planning to return to Ireland next year for good. Where can he find practical information about returning home? Answer The more prepared your son is, the easier his move home will be so he should start his research as soon as he can. Citizens Information has developed a new online Returning to Irelandresource with a broad range of information specifically intended for Irish citizens who are living abroad and are planning to return home to live in Ireland. This new online resource is filled with practical information to help Irish citizens plan their return and settle back in Ireland as smoothly as possible. It covers everything from residency applications for non-EU family members, applying for passports for children and accessing the public health system on your return to Ireland. If your son is planning to start work when he returns he may want to know about PPS numbers, registering for tax purposes and getting recognition for foreign qualifications in Ireland. If he is returning with a family or children he may need to know about applying for Child Benefit, enrolling in school or college and exemptions from learning the Irish language in school. The site also has information about converting a foreign driving license to an Irish one, getting car insurance as a returning Irish emigrant and travelling to Ireland with your pet.
Know Your Rights has been compiled by Kerry Citizens Information Service which provides a free and confidential service to the public. Roast Lamb, Buttered Cabbage, Braised Carrots, Fondant Potato. Thyme and Red Wine Sauce Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School A proper Sunday lunch is hard to beat, it should be the perfect time of the week to sit down and some good food with family or friends. Also lamb from here is so delicious at this time of the year.
Method FOR THE LAMB Preheat the oven 200°C. Season the lamb with salt and pepper. Drizzle a little oil over the lamb and place in the oven. After 10 minutes turn the oven to 180ºC.
Here is a recipe for a nice Sunday dinner, I always thing the best food is keep it simple and but do the basics so well. Spend ten minutes planning this the day before and it will make the cooking of it so much easier.
Cook this for 50 minutes (for medium). When you remove it from the oven, cover it with tin foil and let it rest for at least 30 minutes.
The key to any roast dinner is to make sure to rest the meat after it is cooked to your liking. Once it is from the oven wrap it in tin foil and leave it somewhere warm for a about a half an hour or longer for a larger piece of meat. Not only does this make the meat way juicier but it also gives you the luxury to use your oven to finish the vegetables.
Cook the cabbage in a pot of boiling salted water for about 2-3 minutes. Once it is cooked remove it from the water and place it in cold water. To re heat the cabbage, put it on a small tray add the butter and season well. Put this in an oven at 180ºC for about 10 minutes before serving.
for the fondant potato
Place the carrots in a layer in a wide pan, add the butter and enough stock to come up to about ¾ of the carrots. Season with salt and pepper. Cook this over a medium heat for about 10-12 minutes or until the carrots are tender.
4 large potatoes, peeled
TO COOK THE POTATO
100ml chicken stock
Cut out large discs of potato (you should hope to get 2 per potato).
1kg piece of lamb shoulder or leg boned and rolled (ask your butcher they will do this for you)
knob of butter 1 piece of thyme rapeseed oil for the cabbage ½ head of savoy cabbage finely shredded butter salt and pepper for the carrots 4-5 carrots, cut into thick slices lengthways 50g butter 100ml vegetable stock
Heat a pan, add some oil and brown each end of the potatoes. Place the potatoes in a small pot keeping them all standing up and squeezed together. Add the stock and butter to a pot until it reaches about ¾ way up the potatoes. Add the thyme. Cook this over a low heat for about 20 minutes. Carefully pierce a potato to check if it is done. Season well with salt and pepper. If you are cooking them ahead of time, remove them and place them in a container. To reheat the fondant potatoes
for the sauce
place the fondants on a tray and into the oven for about 8 minutes
1 onion, diced
FOR THE SAUCE
¾ garlic cloves
Heat a small pot, over a medium heat. Add a little oil, and then add the onion, garlic, celery and thyme. Cook this for about 5-10 minutes. Let them brown nicely. Add the wine and let it reduce by half. Add the stock and let it reduce by half. Strain the sauce into another pot. Continue to cook this until it reaches the consistency you desire. Season with
1 piece of celery, diced bunch of thyme leaves 200ml red wine 200ml lamb/chicken stock knob of butter salt and pepper
TO SERVE Place some of the cabbage and carrots in the centre of a plate. Slice the lamb and put a slice on top of the vegetables. Pour some sauce over the lamb. Bain taitneamh as!!!

Movie Review The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tom Ó Neachtain The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is the new 2019 prequel series to the 1982 movie The Dark Crystal by Jim Henson and Frank Oz. Jim Henson was a pioneer in televised puppetry, creating The Muppets, Sesame Street and the 1986 classic Labyrinth. He always wanted to make a sequel to the original Dark Crystal but after his passing in 1990, his daughter Lisa Henson took up the reins. The new show (out exclusively on NETFLIX) uses advanced technology and the highlights of the series are the state-of-the-art puppetry and production design. The show, while getting off to a rough start, kicks itself into high gear and creates one the best fantasy worlds and stories in recent memory, rewarding long-time fans and taking advantage of the extended runtime of a TV show. It takes some time to get used to the slightly creepy puppets, the dialogue is hit or miss and the story has a tendency to meander. But that’s just the bad stuff. When this show wants to be captivating, it succeeds. The villains are nefarious and campy, their evil deeds really add a lot of fun and enjoyment to the show and the voice cast do a great job. Mark Hamill, Jason Isaacs and Simon Pegg are the standouts. I would expect no less than great from Mark Hamill but the others were also tons of fun. The cast also includes Taron Edgerton of Kingsmen fame, Mark Strong and Anna Taylor-Joy. The series pulls no punches in its willingness to kill certain characters off and has terrific camera work and editing. The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance is fun, compelling and full of charm and heart. It has a fun, original story with a great cast but a lack of focus and a rough start keep this from achieving five stars. The Muppets are still my favourite Henson creation but this has made me very optimistic for season 2. Tom Ó Neachtain is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne
