Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 1st October when the feature will be the Spanish drama Pain and Glory. Directed by Pedro Almodóvar and starring
Antonio Banderas and Penélope Cruz, the film tells of a series of reencounters experienced by Salvador Mallo, a film director in his physical decline. Mallo involuntarily looks back into the past, and a stream of vivid memories falls upon him. He recalls such moments from his youth as tender feelings for his mother, love and separation, the search for happiness and success. All this leads the master of cinema to important thoughts about life and art, because this is the most important thing for him. The following week on Tuesday 8th October will be the science fiction adventure Ad Astra. Starring Brad Pitt as astronaut Roy McBride,.who travels to the outer edges of the solar system to find his missing father and unravel a mystery that threatens the survival of our planet. His journey will uncover secrets that challenge the nature of human existence and our place in the cosmos.

Farming News Louis Murchan FIRST THING’S FIRST Firstly, I would like to say a big “Thank You” to all those who approached and congratulated me on my nephew’s achievement last Sunday week. It is very noble of you, and a credit to the sporting out-look of the local community. It’s also no wonder that Kerry and Dingle achieve so much in the sporting world. It’s hard to support Dublin, when you’re not one of them and I am actually a Meath Man, for those who don’t know. The irony will not be lost on those few Dubs who dwell among us, as they fly the banners, but I get all the praise. Sorry about that. While I was there, he did all the work, all on his own. I was just a spectator, like everyone else. He was wearing No 24, not I. But he is my nephew, and his direct family, spread all over the place is very proud of him, all five foot, five inches of him. Secondly, my heart goes out to all you Kerry supporters because I know what it is like to be at a sporting loss, having seen my team lose, inexplicable in 1999 and 2001, among other occasions. But your day will come. That is a very young team, with a future ahead of them. Someone said to me before the match that in Co Meath, they “eat their babies”, but the truth be told, they actually put a Dublin jersey on them, send them down the road and get them to score goals. And what a goal it was! But Kerry people should not feel too bad. It was a great display. The goal killed them, I know, but it was a performance worthy of any All-Ireland finalist. Kerry may need to make a few changes. The current Captain Selection process is archaic. The captain should be a seasoned battler, with numerous seasons under his belt. We have such a man living in our midst, but until Dingle win a County Championship, he will be overlooked. And more’s the pity. The other thing they need to do in find a “Bullet”. Someone really fast, who can take advantage of such opportunities as Eoin Murchan did. That was not all he did, but it was his crown glory, and puts him in the history book. It’s fine being fit, but we all saw what being really, really fast can do. Take note. Such a person won’t be found over-night, but must be mined and groomed from an early age. And now is the time to start looking. Thanks for the generosity of spirit, and a great game. AREAS OF NATURAL CONSTRAINTS SCHEME PAYMENTS RELEASED The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed, T.D., has announced that payments worth €168.5 million under the 2019 Areas of Natural/Specific Constraints Scheme and Areas of Specific Constraint (Islands) Scheme, have commenced issuing this week to almost 79,000 farmers. This marks the commencement of the payment of some €1.6bn to Irish farmers under various schemes over the coming months. The 79,000 farmers being paid in this first tranche of 2019 payments is an increase from the 77,000 farmers paid at this stage in 2018. The Minister also noted that, further to changes in EU Regulations, payments under the ANC scheme will now be delivered in two instalments, with 85% advance payments issuing initially and a 15% balancing payment issuing from early December. In line with previous years, not all applications are currently cleared for payment under the ANC Scheme. In particular, many farmers have yet to satisfy the annual average stocking density of 0.15 livestock units per forage hectare for the calendar year. However, farmers have until 31 December 2019 to do so. Such cases can only be cleared for payment once this requirement has been confirmed. Regular pay runs will continue in the coming weeks to ensure cleared cases are processed for payment as quickly as possible. Farmers should submit any outstanding stocking evidence in support of their application to the Department’s Portlaoise Office as soon as possible to facilitate the early release of payments. Arrangements are on target to facilitate payment of the advance of 70% under the Basic Payment Scheme with effect from 16 October 2019.

N & P STATEMENTS TO 31 JULY 2019 NOW AVAILABLE The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine has announced that interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period January to July 2019 are now available on the Department’s online system www.agfood.ie. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year, in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. Farmers not already registered for agfood.ie can do so by logging onto www.agfood.ie and clicking the 'Register' button. To register a mobile phone number for future SMS text alerts log on to https://www.agriculture. gov.ie/contactsupdates/ to access the sign-on form. ONE MORE WEEK FOR SHEEP EID TAG SUBSIDY SCHEME The Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine wishes to remind sheep farmers that the closing date for the Sheep EID Tag Subsidy Scheme is 30 September 2019. Sheep farmers that have not ordered sheep tags since 1 October 2018 have just a short time left to complete their first order of electronic sheep tags to avail of a payment under the Sheep EID Tag Subsidy Scheme. The once-off Scheme has been in operation since 1 October 2018 and to-date payments of more than €1.4 million have been made to sheep farmers. Under the Scheme, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) is subsidising by €1 the cost of each electronic tag purchased in the first electronic sheep tag order completed between 1 October 2018 and 30 September 2019, up to a maximum payment of €100 per person. A minimum order of 10 electronic tags is required for eligibility to the Scheme. Eligible tag orders can be for single electronic tags, the electronic element of EID tag sets or a combination of both, provided they are all completed on the same date. There is no need to apply for payment under the Scheme. DAFM systems determine eligibility and calculate payments due, based on the details of the completed eligible tag orders. Payments are made automatically to farmers in quarterly tranches, the first of which was paid in January 2019. Final payments in respect of eligible orders completed between 1 July and 30 September 2019 will be paid at end- October 2019. New rules on the identification and movement of sheep have been in place since 1 June 2019. From that date, all sheep moved from any holding, without exception, must be identified electronically. Sheep moving directly to a slaughter plant from the holding of origin while aged under 12 months may be identified by means of a single electronic tag placed in the animals’ right ear. All other sheep movements (including movements to marts, farmto-farm, to shows etc.) require sheep to be identified with a full EID set of tags compromising a single electronic tag in the animal’s right ear and a corresponding conventional tag bearing the same animal identification number, in the sheep’s left ear. Electronic bolus sets are also acceptable. With effect from 1 June 2019, single conventional tags are not valid for the identification of sheep under any circumstances. Remaining stocks of such tags should be carefully disposed of or alternatively, specific corresponding electronic tags can be ordered to make up full EID sets of tags. BEEP SCHEME LESS THAN 40 DAYS LEFT TO WEIGHT YOUR CATTTLE There are now fewer than 40 days remaining to weigh your animals for the Beef Environmental Environmental Efficiency Program (BEEP). If you have not already done so, we would strongly advise that you weigh your animals as soon as possible. If you are planning to weigh animals, using a rental-scales from an approved depo, please check in advance to ensure that there will be available on your desired day. If you are planning to rent scales on a weekend, this leaves you just 6 weekends or 12 days in which to book scales! Don't miss out on €40/cow&calf payment you have less than 44 days left to weigh your animals BDGP CARBON NAVIGATOR DEADLINE 30TH SEPT The 2018 Carbon Navigator is available to participants in the Beef Data & Genomics Programme to be completed by 30th September. The Carbon Navigator is produced by Bord Bia to measure environmental gains that can be made on farm. One of the objectives of the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) is to reduce the intensity of Green House Gas emissions by improving the quality and efficiency of the national beef herd. The Carbon Navigator is a key tool to help measure these emissions and is
therefore a requirement of the programme. The Carbon Navigator can be completed by paper forms or on-line. If participants prefer to complete it on-line, it can be accessed under the “Services” section on their ICBF login page. Go to “Services“ and select the option “Beef Data & Genomics”. There you will see the 2018 tab to update (see screenshot). It is very important to save when completed. This can be done by pressing the “Save “button on the bottom right hand side of the screen. Farmers should complete the Carbon Navigator either online or using the postal survey form no later than 30th September 2019. The BDGP helpline can be contacted on 023 883 2883 or email bdgp@icbf.com. Contact your Agricultural Adviser if you need assistance with updating your Carbon Navigator.

SLURRY SPREADING DEADLINE Farmers are reminded that as there is no adverse weather, nor any forecast in the coming weeks, it is unlikely that there will be an extension to the annual deadline for spreading organic slurry. With this in mind, and knowing that slurry will begin to accumulate on commencement of housing, anyone with slurry or dung should begin planning its transfer/ spreading on the driest and most suitable plots, over the next 3-4 weeks. Spreading slurry is a very visible and noticeable activity, visible from the eye in the sky, often seen from the road, and easily smelled. Anyone caught spreading out-of-season may face the severest penalties allowable, as DAFM and the EPA are cracking down on violation of any breach of the Nitrates or Water Directive(s). So, get planning and spreading.

Butter Up to Butternut Squash! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
is particularly suited to babies, the elderly and those recovering from illness as all this goodness is provided in the most digestible form, guaranteeing that even the most delicate among us can benefit from its superpowers! When choosing butternut squash avoid any with blemishes, green or brown spots and bruises. Its tough skin should be matte, not glossy. It should feel full and heavy indicating good moisture content which protects the vitality of the squash. They store and travel well when kept in a cool place, out of direct sunlight for up to a couple of weeks. Once cut, wrap the cut surface and store in fridge for up to 5 days. It is best to either steam or roast butternut squash yet also great in soups, risotto, stews and casseroles, perfect food for this time of year. Not to take anything away from our favourite, the carrot - they do share some resemblances with colour and betacarotene. Nevertheless, butternut squash is a fruit growing over ground, which gives it more of an edge when it comes to nutrition – more like a souped-up carrot!
Almost unheard of just a few years ago - butternut squash has become quite trendy in recent years. Usually found in the vegetable aisle, butternut squash is really a fruit and belongs to the Curbita family of fruits - a first cousin to courgettes and pumpkins and second cousin (once removed) to cucumbers, melons and gourds. They are often referred to as Winter squash because their typical growing season is between August and March. However, they are at their nutritional peak when harvested during late September through to November. Though not a typical ingredient in Irish gastronomy, butternut squash contains a super dose of nutrients, quite lacking in the modern Irish diet. More importantly, butternut squash can supply us with the very stuff we need to combat some of our most prevalent illnesses - cancer, cardiovascular disease, arthritis and diabetes. The amazing health benefits of butternut squash come from a packed nutritional profile. One cupful of baked squash delivers a whopping serving of betacarotene which converts to over 10,000iu of vitamin A more than double the recommended daily amount. Betacarotene (vitamin A) is necessary for the repair and rejuvenation of intestinal and mucosal linings - the barriers in our body which protect the lungs, sinuses, upper respiratory tracts, gut linings and colon. What an appropriate ingredient for the cold, flu and winter-vomiting viruses lurking around the corner this time of year! Along with betacarotene, other powerful antioxidants such as lutein, lycopene, vitamin C and manganese fight off and scavenge the free radical damage we face every day, Although classed as a starchy carbohydrate, its fibre content ensures that these starches are assimilated slowly in the body making it ideal for those seeking better blood sugar control in diabetes or weight loss in a low-calorie food. It also packs plenty of the B vitamins including B1, B2, B3, B5 and particularly high in B6 and folate. Top that with omega 3 and magnesium - and you have an anti-inflammatory powerhouse to protect and manage cardiovascular problems and arthritic conditions. Its warming thermal nature helps remove dampness in the body in which many of these conditions thrive. It
To roast, cut the butternut squash lengthways. Remove seeds and fibres from the belly of the squash. Place on a baking sheet, drizzle with olive oil, seasoning, grated nutmeg, a pinch of cinnamon or any herbs/spices you fancy. It is particularly good with warm, aromatic spices - ginger, nutmeg, turmeric, cumin and cinnamon. Woody herbs such as thyme, bay and rosemary also go lovely with squash. Roast, in a moderate oven for 20 mins or until flesh is soft. Scoop the baked flesh out of the skin and serve. To steam, once the seeds have been removed - cut lengthways into quarters and cut down towards to the skin at 1-2" intervals, removing the cubes of squash as you go. Steam in a little water for about 7 minutes and dress with a little olive oil or butter, herbs and spices of your choice. Do not discard the seeds as they too have great qualities. They are rich in omega 6 and oleic acid (the oil found in olive oil) and hold anti-parasitic qualities. An age-old remedy for worms - a handful of seeds from either butternut squash or pumpkin can be eaten twice daily for 3 weeks. To prepare seeds for eating - rinse them, pat gently dry removing any stringy fibres and place them on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake in a low temperature oven for 15-20mins to minimize any damage to its healthy oils. Season with tamari, seaweed powder or grated nutmeg - these make a wonderful, healthy and tasty snack food, even if you have no worms! Now, with thoughts turning to Autumn, this food imparts a warmth of colour and flavour to our meals while delivering a well-timed health boost which will stand up to the dark, cool days ahead! Enjoy! Mussel pickers drowned
Death of Kerry priest
From – Kerry Evening Post, 27 April 1895
From – Kerry Evening Post, 5 August 1863
Dr. J. R. Hayes and a jury held an inquest at Dingle on Wednesday, on the body of a man named Shea, which was washed ashore the previous day. The deceased and his nephew were mussel picking about a fortnight ago, when they were swept out to sea and drowned. A verdict of accidental drowning was returned. [No location for this tragedy].
An accident occurred at Queenstown on Thursday, and was, we regret to say, attended with fatal results. The Rev. Lawrence Mangan, a Roman Catholic clergyman from Dingle was about to emigrate to America, in company with his sister. On making his way to the steamer he happened to mistake the ship Inconstant for the vessel that was intended to carry him to the land of his adoption.
Rescue in Dingle Bay From – Longford Journal, 13 January 1877 About noon on Wednesday a full-rigged ship, called the James Duncan, of and from Prince Edward Island, British North America [Canada], with oats for Queenstown, was brought up by Messrs. John and Joseph O’Flaherty, local pilots, and is now lying at safe anchorage in Dingle harbour. In the height of the gale, and when off the Skelligs on Sunday morning, the crew had to cut away the foremast. She also sustained other damages in her rigging, so that she was, and still is, in a crippled state and was then at the full mercy of the elements. Her lights had attracted the attention of a person on the lookout before day on Wednesday morning. The pilots put off at once in their smack and fell in with her. The captain’s wife and three children are on board.
Death by drowning From – Kerry Evening Post, 6 July 1859 A woman named Kate Flaherty Keane (sister to the late pilot, Joseph Flaherty) was engaged about fish at the pier here till a late hour on the night of the 28th ult., and was found drowned about 2 o’clock, p.m. on the 29th. At the time she was discovered near Milltown she was floating, curious to say. Mr. Hickson’s clerk, Mr. Joseph McDonogh with others, got into a boat and conveyed the body to the pier. There has been no inquest as yet, though the police have made strict inquiries into the cause of her death. She has left two destitute daughters and a son to deplore her loss.
Loss of two lives From – Cork Examiner, 6 April 1863

Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the14 factMarch that the gas has a very low boiling From – Lloyd’s List, 1831 point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transThe Paddy fromthis Charleston to Liverpool, ferred to createCarey, heat. She had on board a crew of 18 hands and a sufficient quantity of salt for curing the fish. A few days after her sailing she met with a strong gale of wind and a heavy sea which washed her deck fore and aft. During that boisterous weather she lost her bowsprit and sustained damages to her rigging. At 6 a.m. on Thursday last, when she was about 60 miles off the western coast of Ireland, two of her crew, who were taking in the jib-boom, were washed overboard and both were drowned. The schooner had to make for the nearest land and yesterday morning she fell in with a Ventry fishing boat which brought her into Dingle harbour. Subsequently, Mr. John O’Flaherty, pilot, brought her to the

The matchplay for both Mens’ and Ladies’ Clubs is approaching final stages following keen competition. The course was in great shape and the weather obliged with rain at the right times. From a Visitor point of view, as Steve confirmed in the Saol Ó Dheas interview, it has been an excellent year with many groups from particularly North America playing on trips arranged by the major Golf Tour Operators but also a fine increase in people making their own way to Ceann Sibéal while perhaps visiting Dingle or travelling the Wild Atlantic Way. The availability of Clubs for Hire from the Golf Shop was a major draw for the casual golfers avoiding the expense of shipping Golf Clubs with the airlines. It was noticeable also, an increase in French visitors this year with sightings of many other nationalities including visitors from Japan and Scandinavian countries. Of course, the Irish visited in good numbers too both in society groups and in their own casual groups. It was very encouraging to chat to some of these visitors who were so complimentary about the course – the condition, its playability and the natural beauty surrounding it. Looking Forward It is of great importance in any business – and Ceann Sibéal is a business as well as a Club -to look to the future and to constantly re-invest in that business. So, we expect work to start on improving some aspects of the Course in the next week or so. Depending on weather, the work should be completed in a matter of weeks and will make the course even more attractive.

Little Masters making a Big Difference
The Great little Masters held their annual art exhibition on Saturday 15th June 2019 in aid of the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation. The children’s art exhibition raised an incredible €1,623.71 for this wonderful charity. A fantastic display of children supporting children in a joyous and creative way. The art exhibition featured over 40 paintings by the Little Masters. Each painting was donated for sale, with 100% of all proceeds going to the Foundation. In addition to the amazing artwork for sale by the Little Masters, Elouise Flannery (their big master) donated an original painting called “We are all Things with Wings” worth €400 to be raffled off on the day. Sharon Kavanagh was the lucky winner of the original painting on the day. There was also a little exhibition catalogue available to purchase. The catalogue featured every Little Master and showcased one of their pieces of work and their artist biography. It also featured a beautiful story about local girl Hannah Falvey 24 West Kerry Live
and the care she receives from the Foundation. The exhibition was kindly sponsored by Dingle Ocean World and Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic. The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation provides direct funding to families of children up the age of five who suffer severe intellectual and physical development delay, enabling them to purchase home respite care. They also provide end of life care to all children up to the age of five. These children who as a result of their condition require intensive home nursing care. The Foundation gives these families the gift of time, time to do the things that we so often take for granted like shopping, taking their children to the park, a night’s sleep etc. “The funds raised will go towards 101 hours of home nursing care for sick children, children with severe developmental delay and life altering conditions. Right now, we have 11 families in Co Kerry, and 340 across Ireland, who need and make use of Jack and Jill respite hours. The money raised makes a real and significant impact, so thank you” said Emma Webberley, Fundraising Executive of the Foundation. The Great little Masters is an artist programme for children aged between 6 and 12 years. Inspired by the Old and Contemporary Masters, these classes focus on teaching children fine art painting techniques while encouraging their unique artistic voice in a joyful, playful and creative space. The classes take place every Wednesday throughout the school year at the
Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic, Goat Street, Dingle. The Dingle classes are now full for this term. Due to the popularity the Great little Masters programme will also take place in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh every Tuesday from 8th October. These classes will be trí Ghaeilge. There will be two classes to choose from, one at 4 – 5 pm and one at 5. 30 – 6.30 pm. Each class is €12 per child, all materials included. Spaces are limited and booking is essential. If you would like your budding little artist to be a part of the Little Masters please contact Elouise Flannery @ 086 878 1211. Míle buíochas to all the inspiring Little Masters for raising an incredible €1,623.71 for the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation and for making a big difference, not only to these children’s lives but to the whole community on the beautiful Dingle Peninsula. “Every Child is an Artist.” – Pablo Picasso

GAA: The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) Under-14 team claimed the Mid Kerry U14 C final in Killorglin beating Laune Rangers by 5-12 to 1-6. They started brightly in the second and Ryan's second goal practically sealed the win. Further goals followed from Keilen O'Sullivan and Tony Óg Duffy to bring GGC up to the five-goal limit. In the last five minutes we found the net on two more occasions with Daniel O'Sullivan and Jamie Casey (the side's starting goalkeeper who played the last ten minutes out the field) but these counted only as points. What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Bígí linn ag an bhFóram Feirmeoirí i rith Féile Bia Daingean Uí Chúis arís i mbliana ag An Díseart, Dé hAoine 4ú Deireadh Fómhair ó 8i.n. to 10i.n. Deineadh a lán oibre le bliain anuas chun fáil amach cad a chiallóidh athrú aeráide d'fheirmeoirí agus daoine eile ar leithinis Chorca Dhuibhne. Tá a fhios againn go gcaithimid culú ó úsáid breoslaí iontaise. Dá bhrí sin, conas is féidir linn na deiseanna a chruthóidh an t-athrú seo a thapú? An féidir airgead a shábháil agus idir fostaíocht agus gnónna brabúsacha a chruthú? Make sure to join us the Farmer’s Forum at the Dingle Food Festival again this year at An Díseart on Friday, 4th Oct from 8pm to 10pm. There has been a lot of work done in the past year to build an understanding of what climate change is going to mean for farmers and others on the Dingle Peninsula. We know that we must move away from using fossil fuels, so how can we avail of the opportunities that this will present? Is it possible to both save money and create employment and profitable businesses from these opportunities? We’d like to share updates about the feasibility study for anaerobic digestion and showcase demonstrators for those who would like to understand more about the technology. We’ll also discuss options for co-operative mechanisms to enable community ownership of renewable energy projects and give you an opportunity to speak with local ambassadors on their experiences with Solar PV and batteries. Thomas O’Connor from Manna Organic will also join us on the evening to give us details of the Transition Farming Course that will be starting on Oct 23rd. Congratulations to Thomas and Claire who have been nominated for the Farming for Nature Awards www.farmingfornature.ie. Please take the time to vote for them.
register your place. As part of the Town Centre Health Check (TCHC) for Dingle Historic Town Centre students from IT Tralee will commence the land use surveys next week. Surveys of business owners and people on the street are planned to start in mid October. Please support the students work and use this as an opportunity to have your say about your town. We are delighted to facilitate the exhibition of a collection of artwork relating to Heritage Cereals at An Díseart from 04 Oct to 06 Oct and in Dingle Hub until 31 Oct 2019. As part of a wider public art project curated by Deirdre O’Mahony, a CERERE artwork by Sadhbh Gaston was commissioned, making use of cross stitch to produce pixelated images of Irish landrace and heritage cereal seeds, varieties that until recently were considered irrelevant to modern farming. Each embroidered work is accompanied by a text that tells the story of the specific seed in relation to CERERE in Ireland. CERERE – Cereal Renaissance in Rural Europe, funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme – identifies novel, practical ways to support the cultivation and promotion of heritage cereals. CERERE involves universities, farmers, entrepreneurs and heritage societies across the EU. Their research across Europe has identified smaller producers who benefit also by producing more localised, niche varieties. These appeal to consumers seeking novel beers, crackers, fermented and baked goods and breakfast cereals – many of which have nutritional advantages. We’re currently hosting an exhibition, ‘EISC’, from Courthouse Studios, curated by Andrew Duggan. The exhibition was kicked off on Culture Night with a fabulous, live improv performance by poet Nicholas McLachlan and sound artist Seán Ó Dálaigh. It will be in situ for the next 2 weeks. Studio and associate studio artists are Morley Hill, Siobhán Dempsey, Andrew Duggan, Nicholas McLachlan, Laura Fitzgerald, Spalla Gap, Caoimhghín Ó'Fraithile, Bláithín Mac Donnell, Seán Ó Dálaigh and Jade
Daly. Thanks to Andrew for all his work to bring this new initiative about. Pop in and have a look at this and also The Ventry Egg currently on loan from sculptor John Holstead. We’d like to give a heartfelt thanks to Nolungo in Donegal and Lumturie and her daughter in Dingle who told us their stories as part of ÁIT EILE [elsewhere]. Artists Andrew Duggan and Kim Sharkey worked with them, sensitively developing a narrative which was publicly presented together on the night via a live streaming event between Donegal and Dingle. Thanks to Úna Campbell and team in An Gailearaí in Donegal. The main goal of the Dingle Hub is to create viable and sustainable jobs on the Dingle Peninsula. This is achieved through organising workshops, events, projects, community engagement, etc. and supported by funding and grant assistance. We work in three main areas - Digital Transformation, Environmental Sustainability and Creative Industries. Come and have a chat if you have an idea for a project/event/workshop that would be beneficial to the community and contribute to job creation. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1Gbps of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more. The Chair of ESB, Ellvena Graham, OBE, and ESB’s Chief Executive Pat O’Doherty visited last week to see first hand the much talked about collaboration between the progressive community here and ESB Networks. Progress to date includes the deployment of 30 solar PVs and 20 batteries and there are three deep retrofits and three air source heat pump installations underway on he Peninsula. Denis Galvin and Noel Malone once again gave generously of their time to share their experiences and the visitors were treated to lunch in Spillane’s in the Maharees which has just undergone retrofit work. We look forward over the coming months to seeing in practice the benefits that energy and cost savings can bring to businesses here. Ahoy Coders! The Autumn session of Coder Dojo will start on Friday, 11th October and will run for six weeks with a break on 1st November for the midterm. The sessions will run from 4pm to 5pm each Friday. We’re looking forward to welcoming all our young coders back and putting their skills to work on some “Coolest Lumturie and her daughter with Andrew Duggan and Maggie Breen. Lumturie spoke as part of Projects”. Please visit www.dingledojo.com to Áit Eile [elsewhere] on Culture Night at Dingle Hub. Pic credit: Declan Malone West Kerry Live 33

Milltown Castlemaine GAA Under 14's: The Under 14’s had a splendid win over Glenbeigh, Glencar/ Cromane in the semi- final play off of the Mid Kerry Championship on September 19th, setting up a place in the final versus Beaufort. Final score was: Milltown Castlemaine: 5/09 to GGC: 1/09. Well done to both teams and their mentors. Mid Kerry U 14 Final: The Mid Kerry U14 finals took place in Killorglin on Sunday afternoon last, 22nd September. Milltown/Castlemaine were up against Beaufort in the B final. With conditions ideal on the day, it was Beaufort, aided by a slight breeze who got off to the better start with 3 points on the board after 7 minutes. M/C fought back into the game with Damien O’ Connor, Aaron Dinham and Cian O’ Brien taking over in our back line. Our first score came from wing back Sebastian Rzepa and this really settled the team. A pointed free and a goal from Daire Hogan, as well as a point from Liam O’ Dowd put M/C ahead but Beaufort struck back immediately for their first goal. The game was end to end at this stage and some great work from Liam O’ Dowd and Riain Foley brought some joy to M/C with Daire Hogan getting in for another well taken goal. Captain Ben Downes scored 1-02 either side of another two Beaufort goals. A feature of the game throughout was Eoghan Bolger’s performance. He had the highest number of possessions and used the ball to great effect. Some outstanding defending from John Hogan and Eoghan Daly kept Beaufort out for the remainder of the half. Half time score was 3-04 apiece. With the final trophy of the year at stake, the second half was going to be a tough battle. Oisin Spring really led by example and drove his team forward. Dara Barton and one of the stars of the game, Gearoid Quirke won a lot of important ball and set up our inside line for scores. Another feature of the game was the excellent kicking of goalkeeper Jerry McCarthy and his safe hands under the high ball. Scores were difficult to come by in the second half. Daire Hogan kept responding to Beaufort scores and Ben Downes also got on the scoresheet again. Huge commitment was being shown by both sets of players during the second half. Substitutes Ben O Carroll and Odhran O’ Neill won vital balls at key stages when introduced. Beaufort led by a point with only a couple of minutes left but we managed to draw level with full time approaching. A huge drive forward by Oisin Spring resulted in an injury time free with the sides level and time almost up. A superb free from Daire Hogan put M/C ahead in injury time and a huge interception by Gearoid Quirke at the other end led to the final whistle and great celebrations by the M/C players. Hard luck to Beaufort who put in an outstanding display but having been beaten in the county league final by a point and the Feile semi -final again by a point, our lads battled to come out on the right side of the result this time. Ben Downes received the trophy on behalf of the team in front of the large M/C following. Well done to all players on the panel who all played a vital part all year. Thanks to all parents, players and coaches for all their help during the year. A huge thanks also must go to Ian Twiss and his management team and coaches who have done tremendous work all year with this panel. Final score: Milltown Castlemaine: 3/09: Beaufort: 3/08 Under 12’s: Our under 12 boys also had a great end to their footballing season on Monday September 9thwhen they played their final game of their year away to Ardfert. Both our Green and White teams came away with a win. Many congratulations to our U12 White Team who also topped their group in this Central Region U12 League. A huge thank you must go to their coaches James Daly, James Dempsey, Tom, Adam, Jamie and Mike along with all the others who helped throughout the year. Also mile buíochas to Our Coiste na nÓg sponsors Burke’s Butchers and Foleys Spar, Milltown. Finally, a sincere thanks to the parents and supporters for all their enthusiasm, support and time throughout the year. Exciting times ahead for this talented bunch…. Under 8’s: Our Under 8 boys had great games versus Churchill on Thursday and they enjoyed a blitz in John Mitchells on Saturday last. Special thanks to all involved with the boys and to all the clubs for hosting the blitzes which are always a huge hit with footballers and spectators alike! Mid Kerry U16’s: Hard luck to the boys from our club who were defeated in the Lee Strand County Final on Wednesday night last by Eoghan Ruadh in 36 West Kerry Live
Austin Stack Park. Our club is truly proud of Cillian, Shane Patrick, Anthony and Conor. Sincere thanks to former senior club player Mike Burke for all his coaching and mentoring with these boys. Milltown Listry Senior Ladies: Randles County Championship Junior A Final: Hard luck to the above panel who were defeated by Kilcummin in a thrilling game played in front of a large crowd, at Legion GAA Grounds on Sunday morning last. Kilcummin got off to a great start and commanded an early lead-but the girls from Milltown Listry kept battling back and continued to reduce the deficit. They say goals win games and Milltown Listry managed to slot one past the Kilcummin keeper but luck wasn’t on their side- striking the woodwork on two occasions. Final score :M/L:1/08,Kilcummin:3/11. Damian Murphy and Nigel Wrenn from our senior men’s team have put in a huge amount of time and energy to bring this great panel of players to such a high level. Phil Tangney must also be commended for her contribution to the success of this team. Well done to Kilcummin on their win and we wish them well as they progress to the Munster phase of the competition. Milltown Listry Ladies will take on Scartaglin this coming weekend in the semi-final of the County League so we are looking forward to another exciting game of football and hopefully a victory will come our way. We hope we will have as much support as we had last week- so please do come along and cheer the girls on. Venue and Time of game to be confirmed. Baile an Mhuilinn/Lios-a-Tri abu!

An Environmental Elephant Environmentally Sustainable Living
So, how DO you adopt an environmentally sustainable lifestyle? The answer? The same way you would tackle eating the proverbial elephant; one bite at a time (thanks for reading this far!). The aim of this fortnightly column is to outline small, easy, practical or mindful changes that can be made to achieve that goal over time. These changes might seem insignificant but ‘great things are done by a series of small things brought together’(Vincent Van Gogh). Here are three things to do this fortnight to get started…. 1. MAKE ECOSIA YOUR DEFAULT SEARCH ENGINE. Ecosia is a web search engine like Google but it donates 80 or more of its profits to nonprofit organisation that focus on reforestation. They don’t sell your data and their servers run on 100% renewable energy. To date the profits from people using this search engine has funded the planting of almost 69 million trees.
How do you eat an elephant? The question posed by an old Chinese proverb might seem like an odd way to start an article but according to my web search ‘an introductory paragraph should inform readers about the topic of the article and add enough intrigue to get them to continue reading to the end’. Thousands of column inches are being devoted to the climate crisis at present so it made me think that an article on environmentally sustainable living, why many of us have regarded it with such apathy and how we can go about changing our behaviours and mindset, might need a ‘hook’ to get people reading to the end! NASA scientists identified with certainty that the climate was changing over 30 years ago so it is not unreasonable to ask why has it taken the activism of a 16 year old Swedish girl for the majority of people to sit up and take note? Well, for a start, the climate crisis and the destruction of the environment is terrifying. The Amazon is burning, extreme weather like Hurricane Dorian has become the norm, the Arctic ice has all but melted, the oceans are choked with plastic and 2030 is being tipped as the year we reach the point of no return. It is much easier to switch off or dismiss the doomsday reports as fake news than to accept the anxiety inducing reality.
2. PUT A ‘NO JUNK MAIL’ STICKER ON YOUR POST BOX. Over the course of a year Odile Le Bolloch, a scientist with the Irish EPA, kept all the junk mail she received at her home in Wexford and discovered it amounted to 4Kg of unwanted paper. She took the simple step of putting a NO JUNK MAIL sticker on her letter box and reduced this waste by 98%. In addition to a NO JUNK MAIL sticker, not accepting or picking up flyers, leaflets, supermarket price offer magazines etc. when you are out and about will reduce the amount of waste paper going to your recycling bin. If you need or want the information being promoted then take a picture of the leaflet with your mobile phone or check out the website/ social media platforms of the business or organisation. 3. SUPPORT LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITTEES AND SCHEMES. There are many fantastic organisations and schemes on the peninsula and in the county working towards a sustainable future; The Dingle Hub, Tidy Towns committee, Transition Kerry, The Glan Initiative and the various beach clean-up committees to name but a few. There are many ways to support them such as following and liking their posts on social media in order to highlight and promote their great work, filling out surveys or volunteering to help with their activities from time to time.
It is difficult to accept that the comforts and conveniences of modern life that we enjoy are having such devastating effects and to reconcile that we have all had a part to play in this crisis. If we think that the consequences of our actions will occur in the very distant future or happen far away from where we live then we tend to be able to discount the risk. Immediate concerns are always going to trump eventual concerns and if you are living in a place as idyllic and relatively unspoilt as West Kerry it is very easy to convince yourself that the climate crisis will never affect you. The scale of the problem can evoke a sense of futility. How can the action of one person possibly make a difference? It is far easier to blame the crisis on large corporations and on the inaction of governments. However, Greta Thunberg has highlighted that while system changes are required worldwide they do need to be accompanied by individual changes. She has demonstrated that the activism of one individual can be incredibly powerful. Over 4 million people worldwide took to the streets last week as part of the schools climate strike, a mere 13 months since she began her campaign. It is a reminder that activism is not just about lobbying for change but also about making those changes ourselves. What does living sustainably even mean? According to the United Nations to live sustainably you must satisfy the needs of the present without risking the ability of future generations to meet their own needs; a pretty common sense approach to life I’m sure you will agree. There is even a mantra to follow; Avoid, Reduce ,Reuse, Repair, Recycle. It seems very straightforward until you grasp that a behavioural change is required in almost every aspect of the way most of us currently consume the resources of this planet e.g. how we utilise energy, how and what we eat, how we consume fashion, how we travel, how we clean our homes. This realisation is overwhelming but because we live in an information age and the era of fake news there is an additional obstacle to overcome. There is a staggering amount of advice on the internet on how to ‘go green’, terminology to decipher not to mention a myriad of symbols and logos to understand. It all contributes to the perception that living sustainably can be time-consuming, complicated and very expensive. West Kerry Live 37

CAMP FAIR
TRIBUTE
Wednesday last was Camp Fair Day and in keeping with a tradition going back centuries bargains were made and sheep held in pens were bought and sold in the village. Fabulous sunshine brought the people out in large numbers too !
And there was a sadness about the fair this year as people fondly remembered John Rohan, from our neighbouring parish of Castlegregory who lost his life in a tragic accident and who was laid to rest earlier Camp Fair Day.
The Pet Show in O'Dwyers yard organised by Jacinta had a great entry, there were dogs and even a cat and rabbit who were all given prizes for coming along to Camp Fair. The Sheep Show was also well attended and quality sheep shown in Dalys Yard and judged many going home with perpetual cups and prizes.
And John was not forgotten on Camp Fair night, when Gerard Mulligan paid a lovely tribute to his good friend and neighbour during his stage performance outside Ashe's singing Castle with a Capital C, composed by Gerard himself and one of John’s favourite songs in life.
And as always old friends met up, Tom Kennedy, Maum and John Joe Walsh, Mountoven didn't meet since they shared the same seat at Camp School, over 40 years ago and Paddy Joe Crean, Knockglossbeg wasn't at Camp Fair for 42 years and was there some reminincing about long ago, their school days and Camp Fair and Sundays after Mass in Ashes when the farmers of yesteryear, Jamie Kennedy, John Crean, Jack Doyle and Jimmy Rice sorted out the issues of their world over a few mediums of Guinness. R.I.P. all. And there were mutton pies, the best of them in Ashes Bar restaurant and O'Dwyers Supermarket Cafe in the village and Mary's Mutton pies at The Junction Bar were a must, delicious as always !
Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam dílis ! John Rohan, Rest In Peace. SYMPATHY The sympathy of the entire community is extended to Rohan and Goggin family on the tragic death of John Rohan. John is survived by his wife Mary, sons Daragh and Conor, daughters Lauren and Hannah, mother Nora, brothers James, Pascal and Michael, sisters Mary and Catherine, mother-in-law, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends. He was predeceased by his father Pat and brother Patrick. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a n-anamacha go léir.
The Sheep Show in Dalys Yard was again a great success winners, as follows: The Best Flock of Sheep category went to Tom Griffin, Beheenagh, Camp. Norah Crean, Knockgloss beg, Camp won the best traditional pen. Best Scotch Ewe Lamb - 1st. 2nd and 3rd. Benny Clifford, Castlemaine Best Scotch Ram Lamb - 1st, 2nd Michael Farrell, Inch, 3rd. Tom Griffin, Beheenagh, Camp. Best Scotch Yearling Ram - 1st. 2nd. And 3rd. Michael Farrell, Inch. Aged Scotch Ram - 1st. Michael Farrell, Inch, 2nd. Tom Griffin, Camp. Aged Cheviot - Jimmy O Dwyer, Camp 2nd. Jason Rogers, Tralee. Yearling Cheviot - Jason Farrell, Inch. Overall Champion Sheep - Cheviot Ram - John Donoghue, Castlemaine. And Kerry Tap Ensemble performance at Camp Fair went down a threat on stage outside Ashes after the Fair. Wonderful Choreography and dancing, congratulations well done to all. Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Cúrsa Gáidhlige ar Oiléan Sgitheanach Mhúscail saoire a bhí agam in Cape Breton anuraidh spéis ionaim Gáidhlig a fhoghlaim. Mar ghnáthriail, tógann sé am orm teanga a fhoghlaim agus de dheasca seo bíonn drogall orm clárú d’aon rang a bhaineann le teanga iasachta. Bhain sé siar asam i gCeanada go raibh tuiscint nadúrtha agam ar chuid den nGáidhlig a bhí á labhairt ag muintir na háite le chéile, agus dá fhad a chaitheas ag tabhairt cluas le héisteacht dóibh is ea ba mhó a thuigeas. Nuair a thána abhaile chuala faoi Spárántacht Cholm Cille. Tugann an spárántacht seo deis do dhaoine le Gaelainn dul go dtí Sabhal Mór Ostaig ar Oiléan Sgitheanach agus freastal ar chúrsa Gáidhlige ar feadh seachtaine. Clúdaíonn an spárántacht costaisí an lóistín, bricfeasta agus táille an chúrsa. Tá an spárantacht seo a i bhfeidhm chun nasc a chruthú idir an Gháidhlig agus an Ghaelainn agus nach iontach an deis í dúinne, pobal na Gaelainne. Cheapas-sa go rabhamar iargúlta i mBaile Eaglaise ach deirim leat go bhfuil Sabhal Mór Ostaig níos iargulta fós. Tá an Coláiste suite ar thaobh na faille, rabharc fairsing uaidh ar an bhfarraige agus ar na sléibhte máguaird. Níl aon bhaile mór in aice láimhe. Tá an tábhairne is giorra timpeall dhá mhile ó bhaile agus tá siopa beag chun sóchmaisí agus a leithéid a cheannach in aice an tábhairne sin. Is ollscoil í Sabhal Mór Ostaig a bhfuil níos mó na 80 seomra leapa inti agus is iad an Gháidhlig agus ceol na hAlban amháin a bhíonn fé chaibidil inti. Bhí lucht na spárantachta ar fad in aon rang le chéile. Bhí an t-adh linn go raibh ard- chaighdéan Gaelainne is Gáidhlige ag ár múinteoir. De bharr seo is ar éigin a bhí focal Béarla le clos ó cheann ceann na seachtaine. Bhogamar chun cinn go tapaidh sa rang, uaireanta rómhór chun cinn domsa, mar gur ionann scata do na rialacha gramadaí sa dá theanga. Bhraitheas féin gur ar léamh na teanga is mó a luíos isteach air, go háirithe le fógraí Gáidhlige i ngach cúinne timpeall na hollscoile chun cleachtadh a thabhairt dom. Focal amháin a thaitin liom ná cruinn-eòlas – seo an Gháidhlig ar an Tíreolaíocht. Sméar mullaigh na seachtaine domsa ab ea chomh Gaelach is a bhí an rang. Bhí spéis ag gach duine againn sa Ghaelainn agus gníomhach i saol na Gaelainne aige baile. Bhí nach mór 70 bliain do dhifear idir an duine ab óige agus an duine ba shíne sa rang! Bhí ábhairín do dhíomá orm nach raibh aon turas eagraithe mar chuid den chúrsa a thabharfadh léargas dúinn ar an gcéantar nó fiú siúlóid mar bhí togha na sléibhte ag rian ár méaranta. An raghainn thar n-ais? Raghainn cinnte ach beidh orm cleachtadh a dhéanamh agus struhctúr a chur ar an méid a bhaineas ón rang i mbliana. Chuir sé iontas orm á laghad Gáidhlige a bhí le clos sa cheantar mórthimpeall an choláiste. Is mó tráthnóna sa tábhairne nach mbeadh oiread is duine amháin le salacharaíl éigint. Ach fós féin tá an cúrsa tar éis mé a spreagadh chun curr le m’eolas ar an teanga agus b’fhéidir turas a thabhairt ar na hOileáin eile amach anseo ina gcloistear níos mó Gáidhlige iontu. - Buíochas: Orla Ní Shíthigh

Saturday 2nd November 14.00 DAN GRAHAM The Nobby Fishing Craft- A Dingle Super trawler of bygone days. The Dingle Nobby, was a wooden sailing vessel, using a drift net method to catch mackerel and herring. Associated with the golden age of the Dingle and West Kerry fishing industry and aided by loans from the Congested Districts Board of Ireland. The presentation details the origins and relationships between the Isle of Man and Dingle fishing. The story shows how Manx men shared their expertise in building and sailing the Nobby craft, and provided a foundation for a flourishing fishing industry for Dingle fishermen.

The ever expanding Nobby catches for mackerel and herring led to a boom time for employment in Dingle for men and women in fish processing. In so doing, the Nobby became Dingles first super trawler in the truest sense, influencing both the economic and social life of the Dingle area. The talk will feature archival material and accounts from the fishermen who sailed these craft. Dan Graham is a native of Dingle and a former Primary School Principal and studied at UCD and TCD. He has written and lectured on the local and maritime history of the Dingle Peninsula. A regular contributor to Seascapes (RTE radio 1) with Tom Mc Sweeney and writer for the Kerry Historical and Archeological Society Magazine, Dan lives in Limerick and is a Docent at the Hunt Museum, Limerick.

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Cluiche ceannais caide sinsir na hÉireann. Déarfadh daoine leat go raibh cosúlacht ag an gcluiche le cuid do ár stair a deireadh gur ‘throid na Gaeil go calma ach gur buadh ortha sa deire’. Bhí sé ina deire seachtaine suaite ag an mhuintir seo againne. Gach Ciarraíoch á rá gur fágadh an bhua ina ndiaidh sa chead chluiche. Chailleadar cic pinóis ná beadh aon dua í a chur in achrann i n-eangach Bhleá Cliath. Dála an scéil nuair a tógadh aan chic pionóis ‘bhí an báideoir tagtha amach le go mbeadh uilinn níos lú ag fear buailte na caide. Measaim go bhfuil sé sna rialacha go bhfanfadh fear an bháide ar an line idir an dá chuaille i gcás cic pinóis. Tógadh ó thalamh le imreóir ó Chiarraí agus i mbéal bháide Bhleá Cliath. Bhí daoine ag áiteamh go raibh an feall laistigh don gcearnóig. Ní raibh, ach an- ghairid, ach cad a dhein an réiteóir ach speach amach a thabhairt do Bhleá Cliath. Ní thuigim ach is beag a dúradh fé sin, a tharla sa dara cluiche. Bhí Ciarraí níos fearr ach bhí gach mallacht ag baint an bhoinn uatha. Cad é, ach bhí scata caideanna curtha ar boliagar. An dara lá, bhí dúbailt na gciceanna ar foraíl ag Ciarraí ar Bhleá Cliath. Rud eile canathaobh nár cuireadh an Breatnach ag imirt sa dara leath Déanach sa dara leath cuireadh isteach sa chuinne ar dheis é. Bhíothas á rá go raibh foireann óg ag Ciarraí, tá ach tá imreoirí atá ag tarrac ar an dtriocha bliain agus iad ar fheabhas. Ceileadh ciceanna saora ar Chiarraí. Bíonn cead cainte ag lucht caillte na himeartha. Ní raibh aon leigheas ar ár gcás ach é a mharú le foighne. Brexit Tá lá na cinniúna buailte linn agus conas mar a bheidh ag Johnson? Tá sé ar ruathar aonair agus é ar bhruach liútar léatar a aimsiú . Mheasfá go mbainfear an bonn uaidh ach níl ansan ach leathscéal. Conas nó cén teachtaireacht a tháinig as Mór Chruinniú Pháirtí an Lucht Oibre. Tá fadhb le roint bheag ón bPáirtí ná tabharfadh tacaíocht dó. Ta baicle teachtaí ag an bPáirtí Glas agus ag na Liobarnálaigh. Tá a nDáil fós scortha agus mé á scríobh seo ach beidh nó tá lá na cinniúna tacaithe. Ní bheidh mórán do chabhair ag Johnson ‘sé sin mura mbíonn athrú aigne ar chuid dá theachtaí féin agus conas mar bheidh ag na hAondachtóirí sna sé Chontae. Fén am go léithfidh tú é seo ba chóir go mbeadh aan curam seo níos soiléire. Cuimhnigh ar votaí an bPáirtí Glas agus na Liobálaigh atá idir dhá cheann na meá. Tá an- bhrú ar na hAondachtóirí óna lucht tacaíochta féin. Tá sé seo ina scéal Mhadra na n-Ocht gCos. Tá an mhuintir seo againne don dtuairim gp mbeidh beidh teorainn, rud a fhágfadh cúrsaí eacnamaíochta ina gcíor thuathail. Is maith é an duine a chuirfeadh ar an eolas sinn. Sin í an fhadhb atá sall is anall le breis is dhá bhliain agus déarfainn ná fuil a dheire fós againn.
Picéid Is tréis pé réiteach a déanfar ó Tuaidh a chóir dos na feirmeóirí atá gearánach fés na praghaseanna samlais gníomhú. Measaim go bhfuil an ceart, ‘sé sin go mbíonn an phroifíd mhór ag na monarcanna feola agus na feirmeóirí thíos leis. Ba cheart an scéal a bhogadh. Má tá an mhairteóil thíos leis beidh an chaoirfheoil chomh maith. An Tuath. Má tá an líon leanaí fén dtuath ag ísliú bliain i ndiaidh bliana is mó scoil agus pobal a bheidh thíos leis. Ach is dócha gur fén dtuath a cheart daoine ós na tíortha thoir thuaidh a lonnú mar i gcásanna éagsúla leanann anró agus marú iad sna catharacha. N’fheadar an féidir é sin a dhéanamh mar tá na tíortha beaga so ina mbaill don AE.

An File Bhí an- dheire seachtaine ag Féile bliantuil, coiste an Bhlascaoid. Bíonn téama éagsúíl gach bliain. I mbliana ‘sé An File nó Mícheál Ó Guithín agus a shaothar a bhí á mheas. Fear iomráiteach b’ea Mícheál go raibh an- aithne agam air.Thugas é mar aoi go dtí cúrsaí do abhar múinteóirí agus bhíodh an- sharú acu ach ba fhuirist do Mhícheál iad a chur ar chonair an eolais. Small Claims Procedure Question I am unhappy with the repair work a builder has done to my house, he hasn’t fixed the issue and he refuses to put it right. Do I have any rights in this situation? Answer If your builder is unwilling to compensate you, you may be able to make a claim against them using the small claims procedure. The aim of this procedure is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes without a solicitor. The maximum amount you can claim for under the small claims procedure is €2,000. The small claims procedure is provided through local District Court offices. If you have purchased goods or services for private use from someone selling them in the course of business, you can make a claim using the small claims procedure. You can make claims for bad workmanship, minor damage to property, faulty goods and for the non-return of rent deposits for certain kinds of rented properties, for example, a holiday home. Businesses can also use this procedure to make claims against other businesses about contracts for goods or services purchased. To make a claim, you need to complete the application form and submit it and a fee of €25 to the Small Claims Registrar. You can do this online at the Courts Service Online website, csol.ie.Alternatively, you can download the application form fromcourts.ieor get a copy from the Small Claims Registrar at the District Court office. Make sure you include the correct name and address of the company or person
you are claiming against. You can doublecheck this information on the Companies Registration Office website at cro.ie. The Registrar sends a copy of your application to the person you are making the claim against. If the other person does not reply within 15 days of receiving your application, your claim will be automatically treated as undisputed. Then the court will make an order in your favour for the amount claimed, and direct that it be paid within a specific period of time. If your claim is disputed, the Registrar will give you a copy of the reasons why the other person is disputing your claim. The Registrar will try to negotiate a settlement to the dispute. Comharchumann Forbartha an Leith Triúigh Bailte Slachtmhara/ Tidy Towns Míle buiochas le gach duine a chabhraigh linn le bliain anuas agus a thug síntiúis — gan do thacaíocht ní bheimis in ann leanúint ar aghaidh. Dheineamar alán in 2019 agus beidh a thuilleadh le deanamh i2020, mar sin más féidir leat uair nó dhó a spáráil (seachtainiúil / coicísiúil / míosúil), beimíd ana bhuíoch. Is féidir leat a bheith freagracht ar píosa talún in aice do thigh féin Má tá aon smaointe agat, ba bhreá linn iad a cloistint uait. Thank you to all who helped out over the past year with projects and gave donations—without your support we would not be able to continue. Our projects increased in 2019 and we'll need extra volunteers in 2020, so if you can spare an hour or two (weekly/fortnightly/monthly), we would appreciate it. You can join us or take responsibility for an area near where you live. If you have any ideas, we would love to hear from you. Tidy Towns is now a very broad area and includes focus on nature and biodiversity, sustainability, climate change, and litter control. If you have a particular area of interest, we would love to hear from you. This is our community—let's make it extra special and take pride in our place. 2019: Tidy Towns Results - will be announced on September 30th Glúineach na Seapáine/ Japanese Knotweed Beidh crinniú poiblí againn sa Halla go luath chun an fadhb a phlé le Envirico. Beidh mapa á dheanamh amach againn chun a theaispeaint na háiteanna a bhfuil an planda ag fás Conas is féidir leat cabhrú — tabhair faoi deara an áit a bhfuil an tSnaidhm Seapánach ag fás agus cuir in iúl dúinn ag an gcruinniú. Ná cuir isteach ar aon chrannóg a fheiceann tú. Ná gearr é, ná tochailt é, mar cuireaann se seo leis an fás. Members of the Clochán Bréanainn Tidy Towns group recently met with representatives from Envirico to get advice on mapping Japanese Knotweed in our area and how to eradicate it in the coming years. We have invited Envirico to do a presentation for members of the local community at the Halla Le Chéile in the coming months, date and time to follow.. Our plan is to seek funding to do a mapping survey and engage professionals to eradicate the Japanese Knotweed in our community in the coming years. How you can help—take note of where Japanese Knotweed is growing and let us know at the meeting. Do not disturb any knotweed that you see. Do not cut, prune, or dig it, as this encourages growth and causes it to spread. Seirbhis Iarscoil Tá Scéim Náisiúnta do Cúram Leanaí ar fáil ó Dheireadh Fómhair 2019 dos na tuismitheoirí sin atá ag obair. Glazed Duck, Swiss Chard, and Sherry Vinegar Dressing Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School It is food festival time again and I hope everyone is excited, it is a time to really appreciate and acknowledge that we have great food here and it is as good as anywhere in the world. My idea of an incredible food festival, is to have loads of local and national foods at every corner of the town to enjoy with your friends, mix this with some cookery demos, workshops and then maybe more food. So, I think you will all agree that our food festival is exactly what a food festival should be. Enjoy the festival and be proud of what we have to offer at every corner. Breast of duck is an easy one to cook, it is rich and will always go with some sweetness and something with a little acid to help through the fat. The following recipe will work as a starter for four or a main course for two. When cooking duck breast, you want a crispy skin but you want to render some of the fat too, that is why you can start cooking the duck over a medium heat with no oil in the pan. Cook it like this for a little while will render some of the fat and then you can turn up the heat near the end to crisp the skin. Try and find yourself some really tasty duck breast one such example is Skeaghanore Duck from West Cork. Ingredients 2 duck breasts handful of swiss chard or spinach, washed, stalks and leaves separated 1 tsp. sugar small bunch of thyme
100 ml sherry vinegar salt and pepper rapeseed oil Method for the dressing Add the honey and the vinegar to a small pot and warm it. Season with salt and pepper. for the duck Score the fat on the duck and season with salt and pepper. Turn a pan on over medium heat, don’t add any oil as the fat on the duck breast will be enough. Place the duck in the pan skin side down. Allow this to cook over medium heat. After about 4 minutes, turn the duck over and brush some of the dressing over the duck skin, cook the duck for a further 2 minutes with the skin facing up. Strain off some of the fat, turn the heat up and turn the duck again and cook for a further 2 minutes or so, this will allow the honey mixture to take on some colour. Remove the pan from the heat and allow to rest for about 5 minutes. This will give you enough time to finish all the other ingredients. Meanwhile, place the pot with the remaining dressing over a gentle heat to reduce. In a separate pan, add a little oil then add the stalks and cook for about 2 minutes, then add the leaves, season with salt and pepper. to serve,
for the dressing
Slice the duck, place some of the greens on the centre of the plate. Place some slice duck on top, drizzle some sauce over the duck.
50 ml honey

Movie Review
West Kerry Live Printing
Ad Astra Tom Ó Neachtain Ad Astra is a new science-fiction movie starring Brad Pitt, Liv Tyler and Tommy Lee Jones. It follows astronaut Roy McBride (Pitt) as he goes on a space mission to Neptune to stop catastrophic power surges, possibly being caused by his father who disappeared 26 years earlier. This movie was one of the big hitters at The Venice Film Festival, and its not very difficult to see why. Reviewers have been raving about its absolutely gorgeous visuals and cinematography, easily one the films best features. The art direction does spectacular work in illustrating how infinite and consuming space is. Between the Kubrickesqe lighting on Mars, or the endless surface of the moon, a visual treat is present from the opening shot to the credits. The director and cast use the infinite canvas of space to tell a small, human story which is very well executed. Almost every supporting character is memorable and some scenes (especially a chase-sequence on the moon) are thrilling and have great stunt work. As the story progresses, the plot slows, with some nice twists and turns. The last half hour features just two characters, and the acting, direction and score use that to show how deep and personal the movie is. It has a perfect ending that sticks the landing and brings the story to a natural conclusion. This the director’s first big-budget Hollywood movie and you can see how much thought and effort he put into making this a really special movie, one that only comes along every couple of years. Keep an eye out for it at The Phoenix Cinema soon, I would highly recommend it to anyone. Ad Astra is touching, well made, gorgeous to look at with great performances. Nothing short of a masterpiece.
