Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 15th October will be one of the most talked about films of the year, Joker. The film stars Jaoquin Phoenix as mentallytroubled comedian Arthur Fleck who embarks on a downward-spiral of social revolution and bloody crime. This path brings him face-to-face with his infamous alter-ego: "The Joker".

The film gives its infamous central character a chillingly plausible origin story that serves as a brilliant showcase for its star as he stalks the streets of Gotham City. The following week on Tuesday 22nd October the feature will be the biographical drama Judy. The film stars Renée Zellweger as singer Judy Garland and is set in London in 1968. It is 30 years since she shot to global stardom in The Wizard of Oz, but if her voice has weakened, its dramatic intensity has only grown. As she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends and adoring fans, her wit and warmth shine through. Featuring some of her best-known songs, the film celebrates the voice, the capacity for love, and the sheer pizzazz of "the world's greatest entertainer". 4 West Kerry Live

Beaufort Film Night

of TV detective Kurt Wallander in the original Swedish film series.

Beaufort Film Night returns for another screening which will take place at The Inn Between Bar, Beaufort, on Friday 11th October at 8.30pm.

A Man Called Ove was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Foreign Language Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

Swedish comedy-drama A Man Called Ove is the feature on the night. Based on the best-selling novel by Fredrik Backman, it tells the story of widower Ove, played by Rolf Lassgård, a retiree struggling to come to terms with the death of his beloved wife Sonja, and who spends his days strictly enforcing the local housing association rules. Ove’s world is unexpectedly turned upside down when a young family move in next door. Despite his initial resistance, Ove slowly forms a bond with his new neighbours and discovers a whole new side of life.

Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and international language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, films which normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry. Films screened at Beaufort Film Night will be carefully curated in order to appeal to a general audience. Beaufort Film Night is working in conjunction with Access Cinema, the Arts Council funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with their screenings.

This Swedish international smash hit is a bittersweet but charming tale of one man rediscovering himself, often with hilarious results. This is a true crowd-pleaser held together by a strong lead performance by Rolf Lassgård, an actor known internationally for his portrayal

Beaufort Film Night would like to thank The Inn Between Bar for providing a venue for this cultural and entertainment opportunity. Admission to the film is €7 which will go towards covering the motion picture licencing fee and

Farming News Louis Murchan BUDGET 2020 This being both a “Compromise” and a Brexit Budget, no one was expecting any great shocks in yesterday’s budget. There were more leeks in this than in a Welshman’s soup. We knew many of the main points, and were not surprised with the 50 cents of cigarettes or the rise on fuel-oil. But it does put us almost on a war-footing regarding Brexit. We know it’s going to happen, we don’t know if there’s going to be deal, so we need a contingency. Speaking in the Dail, after the Minister for Finance budget speech, Minister of Agriculture announced that the budget was unique in that it aims to preserve the strong financial supports that assist our Agri-Food sector, (His words, not mine) while simultaneously providing for the potential of a significant shock to the sector in the guise of a ‘No Deal’ Brexit. Against this backdrop, his priority has been to support sectoral vulnerabilities that exist and to maintain a strong focus on climate action and environmental sustainability. It is also hoped to maintain the ambition for the development of our food industry while helping farmers, fishermen and food SME’s to navigate the challenges of Brexit. Today’s Estimates provide a gross Vote of €1.647 billion for the Department. This is €51 million more than in 2019, and is a 3% increase on the 2019 allocation. First tranche of No Deal Brexit supports €110m Outlining the Government’s ‘No deal’ Brexit package designed to assist the most vulnerable sectors in the event of a ‘No Deal’ Brexit it was announced that the Government would provide a ‘No Deal’ contingency fund to support the most vulnerable sectors, with up to €650 million available overall, to be activated in tranches as the full impacts of Brexit emerge. €110 million will be made available for the agri-food sector in the first tranche, to be supplemented by any exceptional aid provided from the EU. If the UK leaves without a deal, the department will work through the necessary state aid provisions to deploy these resources in the most effective way possible. The provision of immediate support for the beef sector (€85 million) will be a first priority, as will support for our fishing fleet (€14 million). Food companies will be offered support who want to re-orient production and marketing towards non UK markets (€5 million) and to provide necessary support to other sectors to improve competitiveness (€6 million). While supports cannot fully address the negative effects of a No Deal for the agri food and fisheries sectors, this first tranche of supports will be used to improve the immediate impact on farmers and fishermen, as the full impact of a No Deal Brexit occurs, and to make some of the adjustments needed to improve resilience for businesses in the face of new market realities. Farm supports With respect to the beef industry, regardless of Brexit, almost €85 million is being provided in targeted schemes to support sustainable beef farming. This includes almost €45 million for the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP), and a further €40 million for targeted supports. Apparently stakeholders will be consulted as to the use of these funds. In broad terms the following options will be considered: • the continuation of the pilot BEEP suckler cow/calf weighing scheme, under de minimis State Aid provisions, with a view to such a measure becoming part of the next RDP, subject to an evaluation of its effectiveness. Farmers have responded very positively to this scheme. It will encourage weighing as a matter of course, in order to improve the environmental and economic performance of each suckler cow. • the provision of supports for beef farmers rearing dairy beef animals, to encourage best practice and improve the efficiency of such enterprises. There is real potential for dairy beef to provide a new income stream for beef farmers, provided we get the fundamentals right; • encouraging farm practices that ensure the very highest standards of animal welfare on beef farms. 10 West Kerry Live

The Minister indicated that €18 million is included for the continuation of the sheep welfare scheme, and that the budget for Bord Bia will be increased by more than €1.6 million with much of the additional funding to be used to promote Irish beef and sheepmeat. Climate Action Minister Creed also recognised the need to support measures that would assist the farm sector in the area of Climate Action. He is providing more than €103 million in support for the forestry sector, in recognition of the vital contribution it can make in mitigating climate change and augmenting farm incomes. The adjustments to the programme as a result of the Forestry Review in 2018 have already resulted in a much more diverse species mix than previously. Apparently, together with the planting by Coillte in partnership with Bord na Mona, this provision can support afforestation of 8,000 hectares, in line with our ambition under the Climate Change Plan. The provision for on farm investment was also increased by more than €12 million, bringing the total to almost €91 million. This will fund investment in a range of environmental and competitiveness measures, including Low Emissions Slurry Spreading, solar panels, and slurry storage, as well as support for the horticulture and organics sector.” The provision for agri environment schemes is increased by €5 million, bringing the total to almost €235 million. This includes an increase in funding for locally-led schemes in 2020. These local environmental schemes are one of the real success stories of our Rural Development Programme. Through the long-standing Burren Programme, the newer Hen Harrier Project, the Pearl Mussel Project and many smaller local schemes, the Government is supporting farmers and local communities to deliver for the environment. As part of a special allocation of €3 million to fund additional pilot projects aimed specifically at climate measures in agriculture. A call for a new pilot EIP scheme on reduced management of farmed peat-land will be announced in due course. This is designed to increase carbon sequestration and contribute to meeting our commitments as part the Government Climate Action Plan. It will also enhance the protection of bio-diversity and water quality and provide a template for action in advance of Irelands next Common Agriculture Policy. Between payments funded through the exchequer and from the EU, total payments to farmers in 2020 will be €2 billion. Fisheries The provision for the Department’s Seafood Programme has been increased by €5 million, to a total of €137.8 million. The provision will help fund vital investment in our fishery harbours, most particularly in Killybegs, Howth and Castletownbere. The budget provision will allow the Marine Institute to progress the construction of a new €50 million modern research vessel. This will provide critical national infrastructure to enable Ireland to address the considerable challenges of Brexit and the Common Fisheries Policy as well as climate induced impacts on our oceans. Horses and greyhounds The Horse & Greyhound Racing Fund will be allocated €84 million and an additional €1 million will bring the 2020 allocation for Horse Sport Ireland to €4 million to assist with the strategic development of the sector. Agri-taxation Outlining the Agri-taxation measures in Budget 2020, the range of existing specific agri-tax measures are estimated to provide €240 million a year in supports to the sector. This support measure will remain in place and the dept of Agriculture will engage on potential measures to assist farmers in meeting the challenges and obligations set out in the Climate Action Plan and to incentivise better health and safety in the sector. What these are, remain to be clarified, but lets hope that they are meaningful. Measures include: • The renewal of Capital Gains Tax Relief on Farm Restructuring, which will continue to address the challenge of fragmentation on Irish farms and will lead to improved efficiency and environmental benefits. • The increase in the Earned Income Tax Credit to €1,500. Most farmers, foresters, fishers and small food processors are self-employed and will see their tax liability fall with the increase in the tax credit. •

The increase in the qualifying production threshold for

microbreweries to 50,000 hectolitres, allowing larger breweries to expand, particularly with a view to their export sales. • The enhancements to existing tax-based measures in support of enterprise, SMEs and the agri-food sector, i.e. the Key Employee Engagement Programme (KEEP), the Employment and Investment (EII) Scheme and the Research and Development Tax Credit. KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER PAYMENTS FOR YEAR 3 BEGIN In the past week, it was announced that payments in respect of Year 3 of the Knowledge Transfer will begin, taking some of the financial pressure off farmers. Over the lifetime of this programme it has played a central role in helping farmers develop the skills and knowledge which will help them to address sustainability, productivity and competitiveness challenges. This Programme has also been shown to have significant social benefits for the farming community in addition to providing important financial support. Given the structure of the Programme, payments are now rolling out on a sector by sector basis over the coming weeks. Payments for farmers in Equine and Poultry Knowledge Transfer Groups have now issued. Payments for Dairy, Beef, Sheep and Tillage will issue shortly. In each case, there is an EU regulatory requirement that the payment for farmers in Knowledge Transfer Groups must be passed to farmers via the facilitator of their Knowledge Transfer Group. Thus, individual farmer payments will issue to the facilitator who will then pass this payment to the farmer. Where a farmer has met all the requirements of Year 3 of the scheme, the payment is €750. In cases where a farmer is in two Knowledge Transfer Groups, he/she will receive a total payment of €1,125. This KT model ensures that farmers are able to avail of expert advice from a trained facilitator, while also being able to share their experience with each other in the group setting. This idea-sharing model has proven to be very popular and successful, will be of very real benefit to farmers.

Bone Appetit for Stronger Skeletons Irene Ní Fhlannúra

reducing vulnerability to osteoporosis later in life. This is not to say that there are not measures available to older adults but puberty is the optimum time in our lives to build great bones! Restrictive diets, fizzy drinks, caffeine and junk food, most associated with the teenage years, are a recipe for poor bone strength and inhibit the absorption of bone building nutrients at this critical time of growth. Most of the nutrients needed for bone strength are dependent on healthy fats to aid their absorption and assimilation into the body. A diet that includes nuts, seeds, oily fish, olives, avocado and good quality oils helps build and preserve bone integrity. For those who have had a fracture, it aids recovery and reduces the risk of having another fracture. Dietary factors that contribute to Osteoporosis include low calcium intake, excess sodium and phosphorous (found in fizzy drinks), high protein diets and trace mineral deficiencies. High protein diets strongly encouraged for weightloss and body building need to be reviewed to ensure the long-term health of our skeletal frame is not compromised by the short-term gains of these type of diets.

Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease, which literally means “porous bone” whereby the density and quality of bone are diminished. As bones become more porous and fragile, the risk of fracture is greatly increased. The loss of bone occurs silently and progressively often with no symptoms until the first fracture occurs. Osteoporosis is now diagnosed at earlier ages and its precursor Osteopenia seen in young adults in their twenties and thirties. Approximately one out of three women over 50 will have a fracture due to osteoporosis as will one out of five men over 50. Although genetic factors largely determine the size and density of your bones, lifestyle, nutrition, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking and excess alcohol also play a key role. At every stage of life, a nutritious, broad diet promotes strong, healthy bones. This includes eating enough calories to sustain your frame throughout your life, moderate protein intake, healthy fat, as well as vitamins D and K and minerals - calcium, magnesium, zinc and boron. In childhood and adolescence, proper nutrition helps to build peak bone mass (maximum bone density, attained in the early 20's) thereby

There is inconsistent evidence that the pH of body fluids plays a role in mineral loss from our bones. It has been said that bone loss as well as other diseases, occurs when the body is too acidic, mainly from eating too much meat, dairy, processed foods and refined sugars. While the debate rages on, it is worthwhile to note the words of one great physiologist Homer W Smith who wrote ‘It is no exaggeration to say that the composition of the body fluids is determined not by what the mouth takes in but by what the kidneys keep: they are the master chemists of our internal environment. When, among other duties, they excrete the ashes of our body fires, or remove from the blood the infinite variety of foreign substances that are constantly absorbed from our indiscriminate gastrointestinal tracts, these excretory operations are incidental to the major task of keeping our internal environment in an ideal, balanced state.’ (From Fish to Philosopher, 1953). His theory ties in with ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that connects bone health to kidney health. Although he does not allude to TCM in any of his research, it is interesting that this and much more recent research demonstrates that nutrients which support the smooth running of

our kidneys are the same nutrients that promote bone strength. And conversely, foods that are taxing on the kidneys are associated with increased risk of bone disease. Sea vegetables, tofu, green leafy vegetables, broccoli, cabbage, kale, sprouts, sesame and pumpkin seeds provide more nutrients for bone health than any other natural wholefood. Not only are they rich in calcium, they also provide, boron, magnesium and vitamin K. Our bones are made up of minerals we get directly from land and sea plants – or indirectly from the animal products we eat that feed on the same. It makes sense that these are more easily derived straight from the source rather eating our way through the animal kingdom in order to get a good supply. It is worth mentioning that bone broth made from the long-simmering of animal/fish bones in liquid, provides an easily assimilated mineral-rich supply, as the minerals from the boiling bones are leached into the water over time. Other nutrients include collagen, vitamin C and omega 3, which allows for allows for flexibility and elasticity to be maintained in bone tissue. It is easier to break a dried-out, rigid stick than one that can bend and flex when pressure is applied. Don’t forget your Vitamin D, necessary for the absorption of calcium and involved in many functions associated with bone health. Routine testing and appropriate supplementation are necessary at all stages of life, whether you are building bone, maintaining bone or re-building bone again. As Halloween draws near, all these happy smiley skeletons with their intact bones can be a reminder to take care of our own skeleton by enjoying a (mainly) plant-based diet and regular outdoor exercise for enduring, strong bones and the greater quality of life that comes with them. From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon PERILOUS VOYAGE IN A CURRACH From – Dublin Daily Express, 26 October 1891 At about 8pm on Sunday last an old man presented himself before Captain Horace Barnard, District Captain of H. M. Coastguard at Caherciveen, and by means of an interpreter explained that he had drifted off the Blasket Islands during the gale of Saturday night. The old man is Eugene Brown of Dunquin, a little village eight miles west of Dingle. The weather being moderate on Saturday, he and two of his mates set out to fish in the Blasket Sound. Towards dusk the wind backed to the west and came on to blow hard. After a desperate struggle the three poor fellows succeeded in reaching a little cove on Blasketmore Island about 7pm. Brown’s two mates, being younger and more active than himself, succeeded in landing but the currach, with its third occupant, drifted off and was lost in the darkness. The wind was now blowing a gale from the west and meeting a strong ebb tide out of Dingle Bay with a fearful sea running. Old Brown succeeded in getting the boat’s head to the sea and keeping her so while he drifted during the whole night obliquely across Dingle Bay towards Valentia Island. He found himself about mid-day on Sunday off Douglas Head and was signalled by some of the people on shore towards a place where he could beach his little craft, which he did. He had been eighteen and a half hours at the mercy of a furious gale, drenched and almost spent with fatigue. Captain Barnard was able to obtain passage for the old man (who only speaks Irish) and his currach back to Dingle in the Clyde’s Shipping Company’s steamer Valencia. LOSS OF THE SULINA From – Liverpool Daily Post, 22 October 1868 The Sulina sailed from Falmouth for Dingle on October 2, and the brig has not been heard of since that date. A good deal of Indian corn has been washed ashore in different places along the coast of the south-western parts of Kerry. A hatch, quite fresh, has been picked up on Coumeenole strand, near Dunmore Head, and a piece of the side of a ship’s boat at Minard, also quite fresh. [A different source reports that the crew of eleven were lost and that the vessel sank at the entrance to Dingle harbour]. DR. MAURICE O’CONNOR From – Cork Examiner, 21 November 1860 Dr. Maurice James O’Connor, son of the late Mr. Maurice O’Connor, of Dingle, County Kerry, was on the 9th instant elected Mayor of the ancient Borough of Morpeth, Northumberland. Dr. O’Conner is the youngest mayor who has ever presided over this ancient borough. SHIPWRECK IN BRANDON BAY From – Cork Examiner, 10 April 1867

A large three-masted vessel has drifted in from seaward, and has been on her side on the rocks in Brandon Bay, some 12 miles from Dingle, on the north-west coast of Kerry.

Milltown Coffee Morning

Owing to the absence of all the men of the Brandon Coastguard station Captain Stubbs, Inspecting Commander of the coastguards in this district drove out to the scene of the wreck from Dingle. He put off in a canoe to view the wreck. She is a complete derelict and it is supposed the crew must have abandoned her in their boats when thrown on her beam-ends. Her name and country of origin have not yet been established.

Milltown Ladies Group are holding a coffee morning in support of Kerry Hospice Foundation at Nagle Rice Community Centre on Friday October 11th from 9am to 1pm. Everyone welcome, please come to support this great local provider of Palliative Care in Kerry.

[ The reason there were no coastguards in the Brandon station was probably due to the ill-fated Fenian Rising in February 1867] MYSTERY DROWNING From – Kerryman, 23 September 1905

Cost Saving Energy Tips at home Day International Credit Union

HOMEOPATH

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Dingle Notes Richie Williams FÉILE BIA. The 2019 Dingle Food Festival was another tremendous success attracting thousands of visitors to the area over the past weekend. All the stall holders, local participating outlets and producers are to be congratulated on the high standard and wonderful choice of food, drink and goods on offer in every corner of town. Míle Buíochas also to the entertainers, the Gardaí, the Féile Bia Committee and volunteers, Blas na hÉireann staff, County Council staff, Tidy Towns volunteers and all involved in the organisation behind such a major advertisement for our Peninsula. HEALTH CHECK SURVEY. Students from Tralee IT under the direction of Martha Farrell will commence a Dingle town Health Check Survey over the next few weeks. this survey deals primarily with the way shoppers and local business owners see and feel about various aspects of life in the town centre such as parking, variety of shops, purpose and frequency of their visits and best and worst experiences in business premises in the area. Business owners will also be asked their suggestions on necessary improvements to help Dingle survive and hopefully grow in the years ahead. Please give a few minutes of your time if you meet one of the students on the street as the information recorded will be used to further improve business, employment and everyday life in Corca Dhuibhne for many years to come. TIDY TOWNS. The adjudicators visited the Peninsula on June 16th this year and awarded our town 4 extra marks bringing our total to 302 and over the 300 for the first time. The local volunteers are happy with the increased marks but find the general content of the report confusing and unclear in which areas we should be concentrating for future years. In other words the goalposts seem to be changing every year in this particular competition.!!! We encourage our supporters to view the full report on www.tidytowns. 24 West Kerry Live

ie and make up your own mind on the matter. Work Evenings continue on Saturdays from now on meeting at the Bottle Bank at 2p.m. COMMUNITY CENTRE. Dingle has been left without a Community Hall/Centre since the closure of the halls attached to the Presentation Secondary School in Goat Street and the CBS in John Street 12 years ago. A visitor to the Food Festival suggested that the people of Dingle should consider purchasing the Marquee/Green House at the rear of the Corner House in Spa Road and convert it into a Community facility. It is in a central location with adequate parking nearby and the idea is certainly worth further thought so lets hear your views as the opportunity may not be there for too long more!!!. FUNGI. Recent media reports suggest that our own FUNGI is at least 40 years old and confirmed as the oldest dolphin on Earth. Well done Fungi still creating ripples all round the world and what a wonderful ambassador for the Dingle Peninsula. Dont forget to take a walk along the banks to Slaudeen or a boat trip to wish our world record holder well over the next few weeks. ALL STAR FOOTBALLER. Congratulations to Dylan Geaney on his selection as corner forward in the 2019 All Ireland Minor Football All Stars team. An award well deserved and hopefully the first of many such honours for this talented Dingle teenager. DINGLE FOLK FEST. The Folk Fest is scheduled for the Bank Holiday Weekend from October 25th to 28th this year. A full programme of Music, Song and Dance is planned with the main Concert featuring Mary Black and Band plus Altan in the Hillgrove Hotel on Sunday 27th starting at 7p.m. A limited number of tickets are still available at www.dinglefolkfest.ie Enjoy --- SLÁN TAMALL!!!

Drowning in Plastic: Have You Got The Bottle?

tap water refills to your reusable water bottle. To date over 50 businesses in Kerry (7 in West Kerry) have signed up to the project but it would be fantastic to see many more engage with it. PUBLIC WATER TAPS Kerry County Council were very accommodating in helping to provide 5 temporary rinse stations around Dingle Town during this year’s fabulous Dingle Food Festival where reusable water bottles could also be refilled. Surely it would not be too difficult to install at a number of permanent public water taps in the town? Any costs incurred would be quickly recouped due the reduction in single use plastic litter. It would also boost the profile of the town as a ‘green’ destination as it has done for seaside towns such as Greystones and Bray where public water taps have recently been reinstalled by the Tidy Towns committees. BINCHOTAN

It started on the Late Late Show. Geoff Read launched Ballygowan Water in 1981 to Uncle Gaybo and an audience who thought he had taken leave of his senses. Who would buy water in a country that has a seemingly endless supply falling from the sky and flows from our taps for free? Good marketing clearly convinced Irish consumers to part with their cash as €76.5 million was being spent annually on bottled water by 2016 (an average annual spend of approx. €400 for someone who buys one bottle a day). Furthermore, Statista market research conducted in 2019 has predicted that the market will continue to grow. As my former school principal used to say, “Let’s call a spade a spade”. Bottled water companies do not produce water, they produce single use plastic bottles. The production of plastic water bottles in the US alone uses 17 million barrels of oil a year (about the amount it would take to supply one million cars with fuel for a month). It takes almost 2000 times more energy to manufacture a bottle of water than it does tap water but most absurd of all is the fact that 3 Litres of water are required to manufacture every 1 Litre of bottled water. Around the globe, 1 million bottles of water are purchased every single minute but only 9% of all plastic bottles are recycled. The other 91% either goes to landfill, is incinerated or ends up as litter. It is estimated that it will take 1000 years for every single bottle to decompose, contaminating the environment with toxic chemicals and micro plastics as they break down. The detrimental environmental consequences of bottled water are slowly being realised in some quarters (for example bans on single use plastic water bottles are being effected in some international airports and in many schools closer to home including PCD). However, unless a far reaching ban is put in place by governments it will be up to consumers to tackle the issue. Bottled water is a marketing solution to a problem that does not exist but solutions to the bottled water problem is quite straightforward. USE A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE! First and foremost, use a reusable bottle. This is one of the easiest swaps anyone can make. Most people probably have reusable water bottles in their homes already but the trick is to form the habit that ensures you remember to bring them out and about with you. Irish tap water is amongst the safest public water supplies in the world (99.9 % microbiological compliance and 99.6% chemical compliance in 2018) and it is FREE to domestic users. REFILL IRELAND More often than not water bottles will need refilling during the course of the day and it is often the case that people are not in an area with access to a public tap and they may not feel comfortable asking in business outlets. Refill Ireland is a voluntary environmental project aiming to reduce single use drinking water plastic bottles. It has produced a Tap Map online (www. refill.ie; also available as an app) so that consumers can locate public water taps as well as participating businesses who have pledged to provide free 26 West Kerry Live

Bottled water has had the effect of making some of us water connoisseurs, often preferring one brand over another and disliking the taste of tap water (some might say we have developed notions). If you do not like the taste of tap water there is the option of adding some fruit like a lemon or lime or adding herbs like mint. If you currently filter tap water using filter jugs etc. perhaps consider Binchotan charcoal (activated charcoal sticks which has been used in Japan for centuries) to soften water and absorb unwanted tastes and odours. It is plastic free, can be put into any vessel suitable for water, is similar in price to the disposable domestic water filters and can be used to fertilise your garden at the end of its life span. RESPONSIBLE DISPOSAL The best-laid plans can often go astray and even the most eco conscious individuals can end up buying single-use plastic bottled water occasionally. Currently all on-the-go waste (rubbish bins outside supermarkets, public bins etc.) goes into the general waste stream which ends up in landfill or is incinerated. Single use plastic beverage bottles are all recyclable. Bring it home, make sure it is clean and dry, squash it, replace the lid and dispose of it in your recycling bin.

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Thanks to all who attended the Farmer’s Forum at the Dingle Food Festival this year at An Díseart on Friday, 4th Oct from 8pm to 10pm lively debate, great questions and food for thought for the future. INFOMAR’s (Integrated Mapping for the Sustainable Development of Ireland’s Marine Resource) Annual Seminar will take place in the Dingle Skellig Hotel on the 16th and 17th of October. Grace Flannery PhD, of Sacred Heart University (SHU) will present a talk on the Internet of Things (IoT) water monitoring project as part of the session entitled Managing Our Changing Landscape & Biodiversity. This project is a collaboration between SHU, Net Feasa and the Dingle Hub and is funded under the Fisheries Local Area Group (FLAG) programme through Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) to showcase the potential of IoT technologies and to help stimulate enterprise in this area. Looking forward to welcoming the Autumn Coder Dojo group, who will start this Friday, 11th October, running for six weeks with a break on 1st November for the midterm. The sessions will run from 4pm to 5pm each Friday. We’ll be putting our young coders’ skills to work on some “Coolest Projects”. We are delighted to facilitate the exhibition of a collection of artwork relating to Heritage Cereals in Dingle Hub until 31 Oct 2019. As part of a wider public art project curated by Deirdre O’Mahony, a CERERE (Cereal Renaissance in Rural Europe) artwork by Sadhbh Gaston was

commissioned, making use of cross stitch to produce pixelated images of Irish landrace and heritage cereal seeds, varieties that until recently were considered irrelevant to modern farming. Each embroidered work is accompanied by a text that tells the story of the specific seed in relation to CERERE in Ireland. We’re also currently hosting an exhibition, ‘EISC’, from Courthouse Studios, curated by Andrew Duggan. Studio and associate studio artists are Morley Hill, Siobhán Dempsey, Andrew Duggan, Nicholas McLachlan, Laura Fitzgerald, Spalla Gap, Caoimhghín Ó'Fraithile, Bláithín Mac Donnell, Seán Ó Dálaigh and Jade Daly. Thanks to Andrew for all his work to bring this new initiative about. Pop in and have a look at this and also The Ventry Egg currently on loan from sculptor John Holstead. We’re very excited to host a film workshop with facilitators Ciara Barrett and Mark McLoughlin Principles of Film: Intro to Theory and Practice is a 12-week series of discussions and workshops designed for film buffs and aspiring filmmakers to expand their knowledge of filmmaking and analysis. It adopts a philosophy of ‘applied theory’, or learning-by-doing, and asks two things: How do you put a film together (film production), and how do you pick it apart (film analysis)? The workshop kicks off on Thursday 31st October 6.30-9.30p.m. For more info and to book your place go to www.dinglehub.com Tá sceitimíní orainn go mbeidh ceardlann scannáin ar siúl anseo sa Hub le áisitheoirí Ciara Barrett agus Mark McLoughlin. D'imir Diarmuid ar fhoireann Chiarraí i dTiobrad Árann le déanaí. Bhronn Cumann na mBan geansaithe orthu an tseachtain seo caite chun comóradh a dhéanamh ar an éacht atá déanta acu. Ár mbuíochas ag dul dos na baill agus na tuismitheoirí a chabhraíonn linn gach Máirt - ní fhéadfaimís é a dhéanamh gan cabhair. The Junior Captains - Michelle Sharkey and Liam O hÓgáin have made huge strides -playing in Men's and Ladies' Competitions regular and their handicaps have come tumbling down. Michelle has been a revelation - playing on the Munster u18 Team in the Inter Provincial Competition. She is playing off a Handicap of 3. She has qualified to play in the ILGU All Ireland Final of the Junior competition in October. We are so proud of her and hope she can inspire the next generation Diarmuid O Sé and Conor Corduff have been receiving u13 Munster Coaching in Fota Island during the summer and extra Kerry Coaching in Killarney in the Autumn. Diarmuid who has more experience - as he plays in Men's Competition on Sundays- has represented Kerry in a Munster Comp. in Tipperary. The Ladies Club presented Diarmuid and Conor with a Golf Top to honour their achievements. A group of about 17 young Juniors have been playing each Tuesday evening since the beginning of the summer - having got a series of lessons from our Professional Cormac Flannery. These lessons are vital when starting off to ensure correct grip, stance etc - better to develop a good swing from the beginning! Hopefully some of these will be ready for competitive golf next year or at least to be able to play on their own on the course when they have learnt the rules and are conscious of safety etc.

Dingle Gin Partners With Other Voices To Host 2019 ‘Dingle Gin Music Trail’ As world-renowned music event Other Voices returns home to Dingle, for 2019, its eighteenth year will see it partner with another independent, local company – Dingle Gin. To round off a successful 2019, the two family-run, Dingle born-and-bred businesses are partnering to showcase and nurture upcoming musical talent. The partnership celebrates the end of an exciting year which has seen Dingle town enjoy a moment in the limelight as Dingle Gin was awarded World’s Best Gin in February, selected from over 400 gins from around the world blind tasted by industry experts. Other Voices, which has become an international music TV series and festival, has been bringing musicians and artists from across the world to Dingle for almost two decades. Founded by Dingle Peninsula resident Philip King, and begun as a single concert in Dingle’s St James’s church, the event’s popularity means it now encompasses a whole weekend and a captivating ‘Music Trail’ throughout the town. For 2019 the Dingle Gin Music Trail will feature more than 40 artists performing across 13 venues throughout the weekend, including the Dingle Distillery itself. Acts to be confirmed. Commenting on the partnership, Elliot Hughes, partner at The Dingle Distillery, said: “We are delighted to be sponsoring the Other Voices Music Trail this year. As two independent businesses with both our hearts firmly set in Dingle, we see it as a fantastic collaboration of like-minded people. We are really proud of our Dingle roots and the unique and brilliant nature of Other Voices is one of the many reasons for that. I personally can’t wait to be drinking a Dingle Gin watching some fantastic performers throughout the town”. The Dingle Gin Music Trail runs from November 29th – December 1st, as part of Other Voices 2019.

We want to thank the members and parents who accompany the Juniors on Tuesday evenings as we wouldn't be able to provide this opportunity without their help.

Feicimid tionchar - nó easpa tionchair - na hEaglaise Caitlicí, agus a thréine is a lean daoine na nósanna a oir dóibh seachas dlí na Róimhe. Cad é an leargas a fheicimid ar an mbean phósta tríd an litríocht. Athraithe a tharla le cuimhne na ndaoine: sa bhliain 1974, má theich a fear ó bhean, (agus cuimhnigh i 1974, ní raibh mórán ban pósta ag obair lasmuigh den teaghlach), bhí sí leathbhliain gan pingin cabhrach. Likewise we were delighted with the work of P.C.D. students who worked so hard over two days to collect money and for Garvey’s Supermarket in allowing us to use their premises. All this money will go directly to feed 50 children twice a day in Guatemala and run our Health Care Centre CERNE and pay for a full time doctor.

8. Cé bhí ina chaptaen ar shinsir caide Chiarraí sa bhliain 1946?

Cás na cruinne. Is dócha go mbeidh ualach eile ar ár nguaile ach ní gá go mbeadh sé chomh holc i ndeire an lae. Ní mór a bheith tuiscionach agus dramhaíol atá caite sa bhfarraige scaipithe ar an móthír a bhailiú agus a chur ó mhaith.Tá beagán don saothar tosnaithe. Beidh gluaisteáin agus rothair[cheanna ag cuid againn] ag gluaiseacht fé chumhacht aibhléise. Ansan is féidir fearais a chur ar cheann tí le teocht na gréine a chrú. Cuirfear muilte gaoithe ag obair. Agus cuirfear crainn síor ghlas. Má tharlaíonn san beidh dul chun cinn mór déanta agus ní ghá bheith ró dhian ar an mbó bhocht agus an chaora cheannsa. Gan dabht d’fbéadfadh cumhacht adamhach an cúram a dhéanamh gan aon dua. Ach cuireann scéitheadh adamhach scanradh ar scata. Tá sé sábhálta [ ach tharla timpistí scanrúil] rud atá léirithe ar fuaid na cruinne. Caithfidh daoine iad féin a chur ar an eolas. Ní gá sa chás san bheith ró scanraithe ach beidh an fharraige ag ardú agus meilt na leac-oighre ag bagairt ar an saol mór mar atá cheanna féin. Seo leaba na dáiríre. Féile Bia Is gnáthach go mbím ag Féile Bia an Daingin. Bhíos sna tíortha teo i mbliana. Deirtear liom go raibh an fhéile agus an bia thar barr. Tá moladh ag dul don lucht eagair agus dóibh siúd a réitigh an bia. Chuirfeadh sé uisce léd fhiacla agus formad id chroí. Ceisteanna is mó a bheidh againn an tseachtain seo. Athrú aimsire! 1. Inheritance Tax Question

• Group B – €32,500

I have recently inherited some money following the death of a close relative. Will I

• Group C – €16,250

have to pay tax on it? Answer If you get an inheritance following a death, you may have to pay inheritance tax on it. Inheritance tax is a type of Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) which includes gift tax. You do not have to pay tax on gifts or inheritances from your spouse or civil partner. If you get an inheritance from other relatives, you may get all or part of the inheritance taxfree – depending on the amount. The tax-free amount or threshold depends on the relationship between you and the person who left you the money. • Group A applies where you are the child, stepchild or adopted child of the person • giving the gift or inheritance. In certain circumstances it can apply to a foster child or parent getting an inheritance. • Group B applies where you are the parent, grandparent, grandchild, great-grandchild, brother, sister, nephew or niece of the giver. • Group C applies to any relationship not included in Group A or B. Since 10 October 2018, the CAT threshold for each group is as follows:

You have to pay inheritance tax if the value of your inheritance (together with any other gifts and inheritances you have already received within the same group since 5 December 1991) is more than the tax-free amount or CAT threshold. If you do have to pay inheritance tax, it is charged at 33%. The tax only applies to the amount over the group threshold. As CAT is a self-assessment tax, you have to file a tax return. You can file Form IT38 (Inheritance Tax/Gift Tax Return) online through ROS, Revenue's online service. You can also submit a paper form to Revenue. Japanese Knotweed Members of the Clochán Bréanainn Tidy Towns group recently met with representatives from Envirico to get advice on mapping Japanese Knotweed in our area and how to eradicate it in the coming years. We have invited Envirico to do a presentation for members of the local community at the Halla Le Chéile in the coming months, date and time to follow. Our plan is to seek funding to do a mapping survey and engage professionals to eradicate the Japanese Knotweed in our community in the coming years. How you can help—take note of where Japanese Knotweed is growing and let us know at the meeting. Do not disturb any knotweed that you see. Do not cut, prune, or dig it, as this encourages growth and causes it to spread. Potato, Turnip and Coolea Cheese Gratin Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Now that the longer nights are here, it is time to look forward to some great comfort food. Everyone loves a gratin, so here one that is easy to make but tastes divine. In this variation of a potato gratin, I use some turnip or swede here (what we call turnip is actually swede but that is for a different day). it will give the dish some earthiness and a little sweetness. Serve this as part of a roast Sunday lunch or with large sausages and onions.

Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Start by infusing the cream; to do this put a pot over medium heat, add the cream, garlic, thyme, and some salt and pepper. Cook this for about 5 minutes. Turn off and leave to infuse. Layer half of the potato and turnip slices in a large ovenproof dish, pour some of the creamy liquid over this then season with salt and pepper. Continue to layer in this order until all of the ingredients are gone. Cover the dish with tin foil and bake in oven for about 40 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a pan, add in the breadcrumbs and toss around until the breadcrumbs start to brown. Remove the dish from the oven and remove the foil. Scatter the cheese and breadcrumbs over the creamy dish. Turn the oven down to 150ºC and put the dish back in the oven for about 20 minutes. Bain Taitneamh As!!!

Serves 6 Ingredients 500ml cream 4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed some thyme leaves, picked 1 turnip, sliced finely and cut into discs 4-6 potatoes, peeled and sliced 100g Coolea cheese, grated 20g butter, cubed 100g breadcrumbs, salt and black pepper
