Dingle Christmas Day Swim To Benefit Dingle Coast and Cliff Rescue Unit. Bín Bán Strand
That time of the year is nearly upon us again when we brace ourselves for the annual Christmas Day swim. It's such a great occasion full of fun and laughter . Keeping in our minds that Christmas Day may not be as easy for everyone-the swim, the fun, the laughter and the company is so valuable setting us all up for the day. Lets keep the spirit of community and sharing a smile the priority again this year. Random hugs are welcome.. (well ask first!!) The plan is to be on the beach 12.00pm and ready to run in at 12.15pm The tide will be high and the weather (at this far out) looks to be OK.. Some points: Parking: park facing in or out sideways to maximize the space . Please park your car taking care not to block others in as we all want to get as close as we can to the beach. Also remember to keep the drive clear in the event of an emergency.
SERVICE
Please take into consideration that this is a splash and dash and it is all about fun.
BREAKDOWN
The water this time of year is cold and knowing the limits of everyone is important.
COMMISSIONING
If there are waves-mind the small kids as we run in. Everyone is welcome and we will as usual have charity buckets. Last year we donated €460 to Lost at Sea Tragedy Charity. Things to remember when you are getting ready: Keep your Feet warm until the last minute-stand on a towel or a bag until we say go. Cold sand goes up through you. Keep your head warm until the last minute -remember feet and head. When we come out, get dressed from the head down-bring a few layers-layers matter. Bring more than one towel. Stand on the towel or a bag and get dressed head down-have your clothes ready if it is wet and cold IF it is raining-bring a black bag for your clothes to keep them dry Bring a warm drink for the younger kids. When you get home-don't have a shower straight away if your feet and hands are very cold, give your self a few hot cups of tea, and change your socks with dry ones, bearing in mind that as your body heats up the cold comes into the clothes and they become damp and you don't heat up proper. The hot shower sends cold blood back to your core too quickly so take your time about 30 mins after is fine-if you are cold.

Farming News Louis Murchan Beam Payments Worth €75 Million Begin To Issue Payments under the 2019 Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM) have commenced to 32,444 farmers, to the value of some €75 million. BEAM payments will continue to issue on an ongoing basis as more farmers are verified as compliant with the requirements of the measure, according to the Department of Agriculture. These payments are in addition to some €15.4 million under the Beef Environmental Efficiency Pilot (BEEP) and €34.4 million in Beef Data and Genomic Programme (BDGP) payments that have already issued in recent weeks, making a total of €125 million to Irish beef farmers. Under the scheme, aid is paid on adult cattle slaughtered between September 24, 2018, and May 12, 2019, at a rate of €100/animal subject to a maximum of 100 finished animals per herd. Aid will also be paid on suckler cows that calved in 2018, at a rate of €40/animal subject to a maximum of 40 sucklers per herd. The scheme was open to more than 70,000 beef and suckler farmers. Top Tips For Preventing New Mastitis Infections In Spring 2020 As farmers begin drying off cows, on many spring-calving dairy farms, there are a few things that should be taken into consideration to prevent any new mastitis infections in the herd this coming spring. Housing conditions have a particular influence on this – as cows are more exposed to mastitis causing bacteria – whilst inside – which can enter the cow’s udder via the teat end. The following are some top tips to reduce the risk of new mastitis infections, in your herd, in spring 2020. 1. Cleanliness:- The cleaner the housing facilities are kept, the cleaner the cow’s udder will be and so, the less likely bacteria will enter at the teat ends. Keep cubicles, passageways and yards clean. Cleaning them twice-a-day (TAD) will ensure this. If automatic scrapers are in place, make sure they are set on automatic and preferably, run them after cubicles are cleaned down. If using straw-bedded housing, make sure that the straw is kept refreshed and don’t allow it to become very contaminated with dung. Bedding daily will ensure this and keep it fresh each day. 2. Keep dry:- Wet and damp areas are ideal conditions for bacteria to grow, so ensuring that housing facilities are kept dry is essential. Poorly ventilated sheds will lead to a build-up of dampness, so make sure that ventilation is up to scratch in all sheds. The liming of cubicles is also key to keeping them dry and preventing infections. Cubicles should be regularly cleaned and limed. TAD is advisable. The same goes for bedded sheds. You should be able to go down on your knees, stand up again and go straight to the disco. 3. Cow comfort:- Finally, and probably the most important aspect of housing animals, is cow comfort. Each cow should have a cubicle to lie in and a place to feed. Placed on top of the cubicle should be a cubicle mat. A lack of cubicles – or space for all animals in a shed – can lead to udders and teats becoming contaminated with faeces causing an increased risk of infection. Moreover, overstocked sheds can put stress on an animal, lead to bulling, cause a decrease in production and decreased intakes – due to a lack of feed space. Also, putting stress on animals – due to overstocking – can cause a decreased immunity resulting in increased infections. Benefits Of Shearing Sheep Before Housing. As ground conditions continue to deteriorate, many sheep farmers will be looking to house their ewes in the coming weeks. At this stage of the year (late-November) farmers should have 60% of their grazing ground closed off. Furthermore, come mid-December, 80% of the grazing ground should be closed off. Lambs born from ewes that had been shorn at housing were 0.6kg heavier at birth and 1.9kg heavier at weaning. Moreover, shearing ewes at housing increased lamb birth weight. However, it does not affect the incidence of lambing difficulty or mortality. Shearing ewes at housing has the potential to: •
Increase lamb birth weight by 0.6kg;
•
Increase lamb weaning weight by 1.9kg;
•
Reduce lamb age at slaughter by approximately two weeks;
8 West Kerry Live
•
Increase fleece weight by 0.3kg;
•
Enable more ewes to be housed in a pen.
•
Extra space
An added benefit of shearing you ewes during the housing period is the extra space that it provides compared to unshorn ewes. The recommended space allowance for ewes housed on slats or straw bedding is 1.2m² for ewes weighing 70kg and 1.4m² for ewes weighing 90kg. This, in turn, means the floor area required by shorn ewes is up to 20% less. Therefore, this allows farmers to house up to 15% more ewes in a pen. If farmers plan to shear their ewes for the winter period, it is best practice to shear them as soon as they are housed. Ewes need to be housed for at least 10 weeks to allow for optimal wool regrowth. If ewes have insufficient wool regrowth at turnout, this could lead to animal health problems, especially if they are exposed to bad weather conditions. Christmas In Bastogne One of the abiding memories of my childhood was watching the Hollywood blockbuster “The Battle of the Bulge” starring Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw, Telly Savalas, Charles Bronson and James MacArthur. This is not a Christmas movie, any less than Die Hard or Lethal Weapon, but it is based around the Christmas period, and we see people sacrifice their lives at this Sacred time. The notable thing about the movie is the number of inaccuracies it contains. The real story was even more heroic, and much more traumatic. It was hell. The movie had to sell tickets, the real events are remembered, as it was 75 years ago, this Christmas. Side by side, the Allies and former enemy Germany together marked the 75th anniversary of one of the most important battles in World War II — the Battle of the Bulge, which stopped Adolf Hitler’s last-ditch offensive to turn the tide of the war. Why they were attacking the Western Allies and not concentrating on their worse nightmare, approaching from the east is anyone’s guess. In December 1944, following the successful invasion of Europe on D-Day and the subsequent offensive through Normandy, the Allies might have been forgiven for thinking the war in the West was all but over. But Germany crushed any such thoughts on 16 December when they launched a massive offensive in the Ardennes region of Belgium. The battle became known as the Battle of the Bulge. Here are 15 facts about the battle. At dawn on Dec. 16, 1944, over 200,000 German soldiers started the most unexpected breakthrough through the dense woods of Belgium and Luxembourg’s hilly Ardennes. Making the most of the surprise move, the cold, freezing weather and wearied U.S. troops, the Germans pierced the front line so deeply it came to be known as the Battle of the Bulge. Initially outnumbered, U.S. troops delayed the attack enough in fierce fighting to allow reinforcements to stream in and turn the tide of the battle by Christmas. After a month of fighting, the move into Germany was unstoppable. Students of history will know the sacrifices of the 101st Airbourne Division, especially “Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, of the 101st Airborne Division” as witnessed in the novel and mini-series “Band of Brothers” They let themselves be surrounded at the town of Bastogne because they’re Paratroopers, and were “supposed to be surrounded”. Though figures are slightly disputed but tribute must be paid to the over 19,000 U.S. troops who died in one of the bloodiest battles in the nation’s history. The German attack began 16 December and the battle ended when their withdrawal was completed on 25 January. Adolf Hitler was determined to launch a fresh offensive in an attempt to force the Allies to the negotiating table. His generals opposed the move, knowing Germany’s resources were limited. In late 1944 Allied Supreme Commander Dwight Eisenhower were focussed on offensive preparations and did not anticipate a major attack by Germany. Heavy fog had grounded air reconnaissance, meaning the build-up of German troops was un-detected. They attacked through the wooded Ardennes region, as they had done in May 1940 in the Battle of France. The attack targeted the lightly defended Allied line, held by American forces. While the German forces numbered 250,000, the US forces amounted to just 80,000 resting troops. US forces suffered 75,000 casualties including as many as 20,000 dead. It is only surpassed by the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of the First World War, in which more than 25,000 American soldiers were killed. The name of the battle refers to the bulge or salient created in the Allied line by the German attack. Antwerp was targeted by V2 rockets
from mid-1944 onwards. During the Battle of the Bulge, over 3700 Belgian civilians were killed in rocket attacks. On the first day of the battle, a V2 rocket hit a cinema in the city, killing 567 people. Germany was critically short of fuel and had to prioritise fuelling its tank formations. They were forced to use 50,000 horses for transport, during the battle. Twenty two German commandos led by Otto Skorzeny (who later lived in Co Kildare, passed into Allied territory driving American jeeps. Their job was to spread confusion and conduct sabotage operations. A force of 9,000 American soldiers were surrounded and surrendered – the largest mass surrender by US forces after the Bataan Peninsula in the Philippines. Of those who were captured, 72 captured American soldiers were murdered in Malmedy. An SS unit under Joachim Peiper was responsible for a series of atrocities during the Battle of the Bulge including the Malmedy Massacre on 17 December. “Avenge Malmedy” became a battle cry for American forces and four days later 21 German soldiers attempting to surrender were killed in an act of revenge. The American defence of Bastogne is legendary, On 22 December Major-General Anthony McAuliffe, holding besieged Bastogne was called on to surrender. He replied “Nuts!” and when asked for clarification responded ‘Go to hell”. They just didn’t have enough place to hold all the German prisoners! Even in war, one will find humour. German forces had achieved an advance of less than 60 miles at its furthest point. They never reached closer than 70 miles from Antwerp, and their offensive operation was over by Christmas Eve, 1944. The counterattack in January almost isolated the “bulge” but the German forces managed to withdraw in time. Seventy-five years later in Christmas, 2019, thousands from around the world descended on Bastogne, a town of almost 50,000, to remember the fallen and to celebrate the liberation of Belgium. Last Monday marked the 75th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge, the bloody altercation that basically ended Hitler's Nazi war machine. It began on 16th December 1944, and ended on 25th January 1945. They fought so that we don’t have to, and largely we here in Europe haven’t had to take up arms since 1945. So give thanks, and be glad:---Happy Christmas!

Make the most of your Christmas Herbs and Spices! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
sleep. It was often added to warm milk at bedtime for a restful night. It is also famed for its detoxifying effects - supports the liver, soothes digestion, stomach cramps and intestinal bloating. A little grated into the evening meal will add flavour to most dishes without over-powering them. Nutmeg is particularly good with Italian-style meals, creamy dishes and rice dishes (sweet and savoury). The most famed herbs for the Christmas dinner have featured in traditional natural remedies down through the ages. Before the chefs got their oven mitts on them, these herbs were used as medicine by our ancestors, and continue to be relevant today. SAGE - a pungent herb, best used in smaller amounts. Sage tea and sage tincture is one of the best natural remedies for symptoms of menopause such as night sweats and hot flushes. Fresh sage leaves can be steeped in boiling water and the liquid drunk throughout the day to reap the hormone-balancing effects. Sage is also an effective anti-bacterial for mouth and throat infections when used as a gargle.
Preparations for Christmas are well underway and judging by the countless celebrity chefs on TV, the pressure is on to produce a feast to knock the socks off the mantlepiece! It is important to have some key ingredients for the Christmas menu, but for many - the herbs, spices and other festive foods are forgotten about once the last mince pie is eaten and left languishing in the back of the cupboard for next 12 months. Warm, aromatic spices such as cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg feature in many Christmas recipes but did you know that these spices can bring cheer to your health long after the decorations come down? The same can be said for herbs like sage, rosemary, parsley and thyme which are easily grown in the garden for a continuous supply of beneficial plants to add to your favourite meals. Make the most of your shopping and discover ways to include some of the most celebrated Christmas flavours well into the New Year. CINNAMON - probably the greatest Christmas smell of all! While it features in many Christmas recipes you may still find that you have plenty left over and not sure what to do with it! In recent years research on cinnamon has been mainly focused on its favourable effect on blood sugar. It naturally enhances the action of insulin, making it more effective regulating blood sugar. It is most beneficial sprinkled on carbohydrates such as cereals, grains and fruits - the foods most responsible for raising blood sugars in the first place. If using the cinnamon quills for making mulled wine this Christmas , keep some quills for making delicious warm fruit teas for the cold days ahead. A hot Apple & Ginger Toddy is a lovely warm treat - use 1L fresh apple juice (not from concentrate), a small chunk of fresh grated ginger and a 1or 2 cinnamon quills. Place in a saucepan and gently heat - turn off the heat just before it comes to the boil and allow to steep for 10 minutes. CLOVES - Whole cloves are the unopened flower buds of the clove tree. They contain significant amount of an active component called Eugenol, which is a volatile oil contained in the bud. It is mildly analgesic and has been used for centuries for tooth pain and in dentistry. Cloves are still used in natural medicine to eliminate parasites, fungi and harmful bacteria from intestines. Nowadays, eugenol has been subject of many health studies including those on the protection of the effects of environmental pollutions, cancers of the digestive tract and joint inflammation. Pierce a peeled onion with whole cloves and add to soups, broths and poaching liquids. You can also add ground cloves to cumin, coriander and turmeric for an Indian-inspired flavour and much needed anti-inflammatory health benefits. NUTMEG - helps calm the mind, reduce anxiety and promote better

THYME - grows very well here in West Kerry and imparts a wonderful flavour to most dishes. Can be added to slow-cooked meals or used as a tea for chest ailments - cough, phlegm conditions, whooping cough and bronchitis. Thyme is a common active ingredient in most herbal remedies for coughs and colds. ROSEMARY - a personal favourite as it is a real all-rounder and a great addition to both the garden and the kitchen. Rosemary is hailed for a variety of reasons including its anti-inflammatory effect, a pain-killer, boosts circulation, a heart tonic and increase mental performance. Greek scholars wore a garland of rosemary while studying to improve memory and concentration. It is also a symbol of friendship, loyalty and remembrance - perfect for Christmas time when we think of those who have passed on and celebrate in the company of family and friends around us.

From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Dingle’s New Beacon Towers From – Tralee Chronicle, 2 October 1847 There are being constructed in this locality, three solid conical towers for the guidance of vessels entering Dingle bay and harbour. One on Beenban headland, an excellent commanding position, directing vessels immediately on turning Dowlus Head [Doulus] into the bay. The intended tower on Beenban can distinctly be seen from Dowlus Head or the Skelligs. Another tower on the most southerly point of Reenbeg, [Tourín Bán] opposite to Beenban at the entrance to Dingle harbour and a third on the highest point of Carhoo hill. These are being constructed under the guidance of Rev. Charles Gayer, of Ballintaggert [sic] Their dimensions are to be almost 14 feet diameter, 43 feet in circumference and from 30 to 40 feet in length [height], built of solid dry stonework. When erected, to be plastered and dashed with strong lime mortar, whitewashed thoroughly round. On top of each there will be a mast, with a barrel or some other conspicuous object placed thereon. There will also be an iron inserted into the Crow Rock and a buoy suspended thereto. There are 200 hundred men employed on these works. [The towers were completed by 18 November, 1847, according to the Tralee Chronicle of 20 November 1847].
Death of Charles Gayer From – Clare Journal and Ennis Advertiser, 27 January 1848 At Dingle, County Kerry, of typhus fever, the Rev. Charles Gayer, Chaplin to Lord Ventry, and Rector of Ventry and Dunurlin, leaving five Protestant congregations, and a young and numerous family, to deplore his loss.
Christmas train arrangements.
From – Kerryman, 8 January 1910 The Dingle “wran” boys turned out in great numbers on St. Stephen’s Day and did justice to the occasion. There were two “wrans” in the locality, and both set out for Burnham early in the morning, despite the heavy downpour. Two “wrans” in such a small town as Dingle seems strange. Both parties could not agree, as usual. Sure it’s the same with the football. Christmas passed away very quietly with the exception of a few “scraps” between the “wran” boys. I presume they have all taken the pledge by this time and are preparing to meet the New Year with sleeves tucked up. The Dingle Brass Band is slowly but surely making its disappearance. Though it went around the town on New Year’s Eve it was painful to hear the discord. We shall be looking out for a fresh start pretty soon.
Revival of the Fife and Drum Band From – Kerryman, 5 August 1911 I have heard of the reorganisation of our old fife and drum band. I understand they have been practising for the past month or so. The very fact of having the name of our popular and esteemed townsman, Mr. Dick Thomas, associated with it is sufficient to ensure its success. More power, Dick, and success to the fife and drum.
The Christmas Boat From – Kerry Evening Post, 8 January 1910 On Thursday evening, December 30th, the usual Christmas fete was held in the Parochial School-room, when the children attending day and Sunday Schools and their parents were entertained by the Rev. R. and Mrs McEndoo. The centre of attraction was the Christmas boat, beautifully constructed by the Coast Guards. With its decks of frosted snow, brilliantly lit up with fairy lamps and lanterns, it showed to great advantage the pretty toys and gifts with which it was abundantly laden. The excitement reached its height when the gifts were distributed to the happy little people.
From – Kerry Evening Post, 17 December 1898 On Sunday, Christmas Day, the Tralee and Dingle Light Railway will operate the usual Sunday trains. No Goods, Parcels, or Live Stock business will be transacted.
The Wren Boys From – Graphic, 13 January 1894 In the extreme West of Ireland a very curious old custom still prevails on St. Stephen’s Day. The Wren Boys, having killed a wren, tie it in a holly bush on a pole. Two of them then decorate their heads and shoulders with straw and wear masks with single eyeholes. They also carry large bladders tied to sticks, with which to clear the way. Six more carry flags while one plays a fife and another a drum. This motley crowd then parade the streets, stopping a short time in front of each shop and house, and collecting a considerable sum of money for entertainment in the evening. They are followed by an enormous crowd of young and old. According to G. A. John’s book ‘British Birds’ the reason for killing the wren is based on a legend that a party of Irish soldiers were on the point of surprising their enemies, who lay fatigued and asleep, when a wren perched on a drum and awoke the sentinels. For some weeks previous to Christmas peasants assemble to avenge the treachery of the wren on his descendants. Every wren that is seen is hunted to death. And the bodies are carefully saved till St. Stephen’s Day, when they are suspended from a decorated holly bough, and carried from house to house, accompanied by a song; ‘The Wran, the Wran, the King of all birds, St. Stephen’s Day was caught in the furze, Although he is little, his family’s great, so come out, kind ladies, and give us a trate.’

The latest edition of “A CELEBRATION OF THE DINGLE PENINSULA – CORCA DHUIBHNE” is now available. In Irish and English, this photographic celebration includes the poetry of the sadly missed Domhnall Mac Sithigh (Danny Sheehy). Extracts from poems such as “ Faoiseamh Faoistine” (Confessions Released) give an evocative celebration of the Dingle Peninsula. Other evocative poetry comes from some of the best poets in Ireland. The publication celebrates the spirit, natural beauty, history and culture of the Dingle Peninsula. Concept, design, photography and editorial by Peter Green. Continuing with this theme, “SONGS FROM THE OCEAN” is now printed and available in local and national outlets. Inspired by the Atlantic Ocean and by the need to conserve and protect all our Oceans, this is a collection of poems, art, illustrations and photography by Peter Green, celebrating the beauty, history and heritage of the Atlantic Ocean. “Songs from the Ocean” will hopefully help to inspire all lovers of the Ocean to return our waters to a clean and healthy state for generations to come. There is an urgent need to conserve and protect marine and coastal areas along the Wild Atlantic Way and along all Atlantic Coasts. Hopefully the poems, art, illustrations and photography in “Songs from the Ocean” celebrating the beauty, history and heritage of the Atlantic Ocean and the Dingle and Iveragh Peninsulas will inspire all generations to be involved in helping to keep the Ocean clean, healthy and full of life. Young Kerry Patients Support Campaign Urging Families To Discuss The 'Gift Of Life' At Christmas Two young Kerry boys who will require kidney transplants braved the elements to promote the Irish Kidney Association's annual Christmas radio advertising campaign, which encourages families to discuss organ donation when they gather for the festive season.
leading up to and directly after Christmas Day 2019. In his message to the public Ray explains that you are three times more likely to need an organ transplant than to be a deceased organ donor and encourages families and friends to discuss organ donation over the festive season.
Tomás O'Dowd (age 6) from Coumeenole, Dunquin overlooking the Blasket Islands and Cialan Walsh (age 3) from Waterville and their mothers, Amanda and Fiona, gathered at the century old 100ft high ‘Tree of Light’ on the grounds of St. Mary's Cathedral in Killarney along with Teresa Looney from the Kerry Branch of the Irish Kidney Association. They were highlighting the campaign in support of the families of more than 500 people who are currently on transplant waiting lists for heart, lungs, liver, kidney and pancreas transplants.
Amanda O'Dowd explained, "Tomás is our beautiful miracle child. He was given little chance of survival in an early pregnancy scan but yet he defied the odds. He is a happy child despite his health setbacks and being hooked up to a dialysis machine evening night. He started school in September and really loves it. We are hoping that he will be accepted on the transplant waiting list early next year and when this happens several family members want to be tested for living donation. We hope that one of us will be a suitable match but if not, our only hope might be that another family, at a time of huge sadness, have the foresight and compassion to think of others and consider organ donation.”
Tomás, has been receiving nightly dialysis for nine and a half hours at a time for over two years while Cialan, who was born with only one partially functioning kidney, is expected to commence dialysis treatment soon as his kidney function is low and his health, energy levels and weight are declining. Popular broadcaster and the IKA's organ donor awareness ambassador, Ray D'Arcy, provides the voice over for the radio advert which will be broadcast on national radio stations in the days
other medical and nursing staff at Our Lady's Children's Hospital Crumlin. For organ donor cards Freetext DONOR to 50050 or visit website www.ika.ie/get-a-donor-card. Your wishes to be an organ donor can also be included on the new format driving licence which is represented by Code 115. You can also download the free ‘digital organ donor card’ App to your phone.
"Tomás has asked Santa to bring him an electric car this Christmas. We hope that by Christmas 2020 he will have good health after having a successful kidney transplant operation." Both Amanda and Fiona were keen to acknowledge their gratitude for the care their sons receive from Consultant Mary Waldron and

Senior Football Medal Presentation: The above presentation will take place in Larkin's Bar on Saturday December 28th. Solar Systems The Senior and Junior Player of the Year will also be presented with their awards on Tom Kennedy the night. Why not come along and join in Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide the celebrations ofsun’s what has been a great hot water when heated by the energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity. year for all the players of our club on the A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When playing field. There has been much success it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically thedevelopment difference is small, especially with our on-going field also. when we have had such a great spell of sunshine. So a lot to be grateful for and to celebrate!
There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!
AGM.The AGM of our club will take place on Friday January 3rd in the clubrooms. We look forward to seeing you there.
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
Turning on of the Lights/Carol Service: A huge well done to all in our community who came together on Sunday evening last for the Turning of the Lights and The Carol Service. A tremendous amount Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a €50 each to Elena Hostetier and Michael on of work organisation goes into these 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 events is somewhere in theall region of €450involved to €650 a year. are to be Cronin, Lyre. and those A commended solar system for a family 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to forof their commitment. €25 each to Lucia Carroll, Meanus Heights, €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of enFrank O’ Sullivan, Currow, Brenda Moroney, €350 Christmas Greetings: We wish all our ergy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years. Memories Of Christmas In Gorta Dubha. There was a touch of frost, enough to stiffen the grass but it limbered with the noonday sun. The grown ups were in good humor and we were very sensitive to that. The farm work was done and only the cows needed tending. There was an easiness. A great day was when Mam and Dad went to Dingle to bring home the Christmas. Dad had rails on the cart. We were bursting with excitement upon hearing the cart coming with its iron band wheels which could be heard for miles. They had a sack of flour, a sack of yellow meal, various foods, wellingtons, some clothes, decorations and most important, sweets and biscuits and icing clad Christmas Cakes. They also had several bottles of Sandiman Port which were presents from Dingle merchants in appreciation of their custom through the year. Searching for discarded jam jars which we would wash and fill with sand to hold the candle we put in each window of the house. Holding the ladder for Dad as he retrieved some ivy from the gable end of the house. Going to the Reen, a field on our land that was reputedly a Fairy Fortress and had some scattered Holly Bushes. The house would be spotless and there was a silent buzz as we went about our chores. The turf fire was blazing and added to the glow. On Christmas Eve for dinner we had Langa , a long stringy fish that had hung for weeks from the ceiling. It was salty and boney but Mam's white sauce with onions, pandy and spices made it palatable. After, there was lashings of Christmas Cake with inch thick icing and we made short work of that. Going to Midnight Mass to St. Vincent's in Boulteen was a treat. We went up the Tóchar a Bohereen and pathway through the fields. Dad had a lantern and led the way. At one point we climbed a few steps to climb over a claí and on top you could see all the houses in the Parish with candles
in the windows and it was like a glimpse of Tír Na nÓg (Land Of Youth) if such a place ever existed. The Church was small and comfortable. It was full and the smell of molten wax permeated the air. And there was a quietness. My Dad sang in the Choir and his cousin Paddy Brick, Riasc played the violin. It was magical listening to them, performing for us a hauntingly soft rendition of Oíche Chiuin in honor of the Birth of the Baby Jesus. I remember now, I will never forget, Dad singing his heart out & Paddy Brick his cousin on the violin, watching one another with sideway glances making sure each of them was putting out the best. After Mass all the people greeted one another and offered Christmas Blessings. All was done in hushed and calming voices and that has stayed with me down through the years. My friend Pad accompanied us once going home by the Tóchar and he was given to speeching all the way. When we passed by the Cemetery he proceeded to name everyone who died in Gorta Dubha for the past fifty years. I shifted closer to Mam and Dad for the rest of the journey. At home, we put up our stockings for Santí and reluctantly went to bed. Dad went to the haggard and pulled a gabháll of hay which he spread at the front door to feed the Donkey that was bringing the Holy Family for a visit to our house on Christmas Night. After a fitful night's sleep we arose with excitement and checked our Santí stockings. We compared what we got and though at times it wasn't much we were happy. Off we went running to every house in the the village. We'd get a piece of sweet cake or a bun and sometimes, even a sip of lemonade. We joined the other children and traipsed about joyfully in and out of the houses. It was Gorta Dubha and all the houses were ours. NOLLAIG SHONA........HAPPY CHRISTMAS. - Maurice Bric, New York & Gorta Dubha

The Story of the Riasc Range Here in Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne ( West Kerry Brewery) we have developed a wide range of beers over the years including our seasonal beers - The Riasc Range. Named after the townland we produce in seemed imperative as we strive to create that vital link between product and place. Beer is in its simplest explanation a process of warming water adding malted and unmalted barley, soaking for 45 minutes or so. Malt is barley or other grain that has been steeped, germinated, and dried. Then moving the liquid known as wort to a kettle ( sometimes referred to as a copper) bringing this wort to the boil and adding hops (dried flowers or pellets) for one hour then cooling to 21 degrees and moving to a fermenter where the yeast ( fresh or dried) is added. Only at that point does it begin to become alcohol, where the yeast eats the sugars from the wort creating alcohol. The hops having imparted their flavours through the boiling stage and which carry through into the final product. Usually for us fermentation is 4 days. At this point the beer is chilled and rests for 3 days before being moved to a conditioning tank where it will rest further allowing impurities to fall to the bottom of the vessel. It then moves to a bright beer tank where still on chill it is forced to absorb C02 - the fizz which most people enjoy feeling when drinking beer. With the Riasc Range we give added terroir by using garden and local botanicals foraged by ourselves and kept in the freezer for ultra freshness. The combination of our own water source, and our house fresh strain of yeast give the round mouth feel felt throughout all our beers and the botanicals compounding the intellectual connection we desire for this range. This being winter we usually start brewing Riasc Black as October approaches and continue throughout the season. As the name suggests it is a dark beer, a porter and not dissimilar to Carraig Dhubh with some little tweaks and the very important addition of blackberries and blackcurrants. Fortunately my mother Norah has an abundance of blackcurrants in her garden which she loves to donate to Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne and she is a dab hand at picking blackberries! Having toyed with where we add the berries we now like to do so directly into the fermenter during transfer from the kettle. Sanitising them by bringing them to the boil and lobbing in just before the yeast. The other beers in this range are Riasc Red and Riasc Gold. The Red is brewed in spring with Elderflower from the tree that has been growing in the garden about 25 years. The Gold brewed in summer with Elderflower and Rose hips from Norahs garden. All the Riasc Range are sold in 750ml swing top bottles making them ideal sharing beers. The thinking behind them is to strengthen the social aspect of drinking beer. Which we have been doing for thousands of years. Here in Beoir Chorca Dhuibhne we believe wholeheartedly in the connection between food and beer seeing them both in the same category and it is with great delight we get to use raw materials from within our midst. - Adrienne Heslin

Your Complete Guide to Cooking the Christmas Dinner FROM THE STARTER TO THE TURKEY AND THE TRIMMINGS!
Mark Murphy -Dingle Baked Pear, Blue Cheese and Walnut (Starter) Cookery School Ingredients (Serves 6) I love cooking Christmas dinner and I hope it is also special in your house. Each year I try not to change too much about the Christmas dinner, it is brilliant the way it is. Don’t ever let the task of cooking it daunt you, even if it is your first time cooking it or if you feel that you are not a great cook. Two pieces of advice that will help you really enjoy cooking on the day are to 1) make a list and plan everything and 2) on the day focus on the hour before serving (magic hour). So, the following guide will help your break down each job to be done and will take the stress out of cooking it and putting it all together.
MAKE A PLAN Every year I still take out a notebook and write down all the jobs to be done, and what ingredients are needed. Then try to give yourself some idea of when each job will be done, the timeline at the end of this guide will help you with this.
THE MAGIC HOUR One of the biggest pieces of advice to help bring it all together and get it to the table all hot, and on time, is to have the turkey out of the oven for at least an hour before you serve it. Once the turkey is out of the oven cover it with foil and keep it in a warm place in the kitchen. Not only will this time allow the turkey to be so juicy but it will give you a magic hour or so to finish everything off; finish the ham, potatoes, roast vegetables and sauces. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the readers of West Kerry Live a Happy Christmas and a Happy New Year. Thank you for reading my recipes and I always love it when I meet people on the street and they tell me they tried a certain recipe and loved it. Also, a huge thank you to everyone who has come along and supported us at Dingle Cookery School over the past year. Our new programme is out and can be viewed at www. dinglecookeryschool.com. We look forward to seeing you. 36 West Kerry Live
3 pears, choose firm pears 100g brown sugar 50g butter 150g blue cheese broken into pieces (Crozier or Kerry Blue) handful of rocket squeeze of lemon juice rapeseed oil 150g walnuts, toasted and crushed
the stuffing separately to ensure that there are no uncooked juices of the turkey in the stuffing and I always find that when I keep the stuffing separate I can adjust the seasoning more easily. Cooking Times for the Turkey I have had a look at several charts and cooking times but I think below is the most straightforward guide to follow providing you with perfect results: •
sea salt and pepper Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Cut the pears in half lengthways and scoop out the core piece. Slice off a piece from the other side to help the pear sit flat later when served. Add the sugar and butter to a tray and place the pears flesh side down. Put this in the oven for about 20 minutes. At this stage, the pears should be softer and have glazed - you can have this stage done the day before if needed and then it will only take ten minutes for this to be finished on Christmas Day. Remove the tray and turn the pears over, place the blue cheese in the pear where the core was. Place this back in the oven for about 10 minutes. Mix the rocket with a dash of lemon juice and rapeseed oil. Put this in the centre of six plates, place the warm pear on top and sprinkle with some toasted walnuts and season with salt and pepper keeping in mind that the blue cheese will have a plenty of salt in it.
The Turkey Before you start, make sure you have a large tray, which is big enough for the turkey, and ensure the tray (and the turkey) fit in the oven. It is worth buying a temperature probe to test if the turkey is done. Before you start, get the exact weight of the turkey. Make sure the turkey comes to room temperature, this means having it out of the fridge at least two hours before you want to cook it. Before you cook it, rub the skin with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and black pepper and some chopped herbs such as thyme or sage. Have the oven turned on to 180ºC before the turkey goes in. People always have different views on the stuffing, whether to stuff the bird or to make stuffing and leave it out. My advice would be to cook
•
If the turkey is over 4.5kg/10lb, calculate 20 minutes per kg + 90 minutes. If the turkey is under 4.5kg/10lb, calculate 20 mins per kg + 70 minutes.
To test if it’s done, make sure the juices run clear when you pierce the thigh where it meets the body and if you have a temperature probe use it to check if the temperature reaches 75ºC. If not, put it back in the oven for another 20 mins, then test again. The next step is one of the most important steps to prevent your turkey from drying out. Once you are happy that the turkey is done take it out. Wrap it in tin foil and leave it in a warm place for at least an hour or so. This will give you plenty of time to get everything else finished off.
Method Place the ham in cold water and bring to the boil. Change the water and repeat, then turn down to a simmer. Allow 50 minutes per kg or 20 minutes per lb. Once it is done, remove it from the water and allow it to cool a little. It is best to remove the outer layer of skin while the ham is hot and then use a sharp knife to score the fat in diamond shapes and place a clove in each diamond. Your ham is now ready to be glazed. If you are doing this the day before make sure you cool down the ham as quickly as possible to get it in to the fridge.
Honey, Mustard & Sherry Vinegar Glaze Ingredients
For the glaze: 5 tbsp. dark brown sugar, plus extra to sprinkle 1½ tbsp mustard powder (if you can’t get the powdered use 2 tbsp. of English mustard from the jar) finely grated zest of ½ orange 20ml balsamic vinegar 20ml water
3 carrots, roughly chopped
Method Mix all of the ingredients together to a thick paste. Bring this carefully to the boil to allow the sugar to dissolve. Lower the heat and simmer for a few minutes until you have a dark syrupy glaze. Keep stirring to make sure that the glaze doesn’t burn.
1 bulb of garlic, split in half
To Glaze the Ham
plenty of herbs such as thyme, sage & rosemary some chopped and the rest left whole
Place the ham on a tray and pour the glaze over the ham.
Cooking the Turkey Ingredients 1 turkey 2 onions, roughly chopped
olive oil
Put this in a hot oven, 210°C, and bake for about 30 minutes.
salt and pepper
Crispy Roast Potatoes
Method Place the turkey on a large tray. It is good to put some onions, carrots and herbs under the bird as this prevents the turkey from sticking to the pan and also the vegetables will soak in juices, which will taste good when making the gravy. Now you should be ready to cook the turkey using the timings from above.
The Ham ( can be done the day before) Ingredients 1 ham (smoked or unsmoked) handful of cloves water
Ingredients
1.5kg large maris piper potatoes or rooster 2 garlic cloves rosemary thyme goose fat or duck fat salt and black pepper Method Preheat the oven 190°C. Peel the potatoes, then cut into quarters, and place in a bucket of cold water. This can be done the day before.
Boil a large pot of salted water and add the potatoes, then cook for 15 minutes. They should be half-cooked at this stage. You can now drain them and leave in the colander for a few minutes to remove as much moisture as possible. At this stage place the tray in the oven with goose fat or duck fat. Shake the potatoes in the colander to roughen the edges. Remove the tray from the oven and add the potatoes and place back in the oven. After 20 minutes, you can add the rosemary, thyme and garlic. Continue to roast for a further 20 minutes or so shaking them every 5 minutes to cook evenly. Season with sea salt and black pepper.
Roast Brussels Sprouts with Roast Garlic and Toasted Hazelnuts Ingredients
2 small bags of Brussels sprouts 6 cloves garlic, peeled 1 tbsp. sherry vinegar 2 tbsp. hazelnuts, toasted and crushed rapeseed oil salt and pepper Method Heat the oven to 210ºC - you can cook this when you are glazing the ham. Cut the bottom off the Brussels sprouts, and slice each in half top to bottom. Heat a pan over medium heat; once it is hot place the sprouts cut side down in one layer in pan. Then add the garlic into the pan and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Leave the sprouts here until they start to brown. Once they start to brown add a little butter and put them in the oven. Roast them in the oven for about 15-20 minutes remembering to shake them every 5 minutes or so. When they are done season them well and add in the vinegar, toss the hazelnuts over them and serve.
Roast Parsnip & Carrots with Local Honey and Thyme Ingredients
600g carrots, halved 600g small parsnips, halved
pot of boiling salted water and cook them for about 8 minutes. Once they are par-cooked place them in cold water. Repeat this process with the parsnips. This step can be done the day before. To roast them preheat the oven to 190°C. Place the carrots and parsnips in a large roasting tin with the thyme and salt and pepper, and drizzle with oil. Roast them in the oven for 25 minutes, tossing occasionally in the oil during cooking, until tender and golden. Heat the honey and lemon juice for a few minutes in a small saucepan, stirring until you have a smooth, runny sauce. Pour this over the carrots and parsnips for the last 5 minutes of cooking, tossing the vegetables in the sauce to coat evenly. Scatter with the parsley just before serving.
Red Cabbage Braised in Cider Ingredients
1 head of red cabbage, sliced very finely 2 apples, sliced 1 red onion, chopped 2 tbsp. cider vinegar 1 tbsp. rich dark brown sugar handful sultanas cider to come up ¾ way in pan - a dry cider works best salt and pepper Method Heat the oil in a small frying pan. Add the onion and fry gently until very soft. Mix together the fried onion, vinegar and sugar and add to a large pot along with the red cabbage, apples and sultanas. Pour in the cider until it comes about ¾ way on the red cabbage, cover the cabbage with some parchment paper and cook very slowly for 2 hours. Make sure to stir it every now and then to ensure it is not sticking to the bottom of the pot, add a little water if it is too dry.
Thyme, Lemon and Pine Nut Stuffing Ingredients
1 lemon, zested and juiced salt and pepper Method In large pan add some of the butter and cook the onions slowly without colour for 4 5 minutes. Add the herbs, the remaining butter and the breadcrumbs. Ideally you want to keep the mixture moist. Add in the pine nuts and the lemon zest and juice. Season with salt and pepper.
Gravy
Ingredients 1 onion, finely diced 1 carrot, finely diced 1 clove of garlic bunch of chopped herbs pinch of flour - use gluten-free if you can’t have gluten 100ml red wine 500ml stock - use the juice from the turkey tray salt and pepper Method Once the turkey has been cooked and you have removed it from the tray, skim off the excess fat from the roasting tray. Put the tray on the hob over a low heat and add the diced onion, garlic, herbs and the diced carrot to the existing vegetables that were there while the turkey was cooking. Add the red wine and cook it until it has reduced by half. Make sure to scrape the tray to help remove all the bits. Stir in a pinch of flour and add about 500ml of stock. Cook it for about 10-15 minutes, I usually strain it into a pot so it can be warmed and seasoned with salt and pepper when needed. Once you are ready to serve the meal heat the gravy and pour it in to a warm gravy boat.
Homemade Cranberry and Spiced Orange Sauce Ingredients
100ml ruby port 100g fresh cranberries
•Cook the ham and remove it from the water and score it •Have the ingredients ready for the glaze •Peel the potatoes and keep them in water •Peel the carrots and parsnips and keep them in water •Make the stuffing •Make the cranberry sauce
On Christmas Day: • Bring the turkey to room temperature •
Cook the turkey
•
Prepare the sprouts
• Prepare, bake and serve the starter (this will leave an hour before the main meal but will give you plenty of time to get everything done) • When the turkey is done allow it to rest for one hour or more • Once the turkey is out of the oven, turn the heat up and return the ham to the oven to glaze • This ‘turkey resting time’ will allow you to cook the vegetables, including the potatoes. • Now would be a good time to get the gravy sorted and use this time to finish the sprouts and heat the stuffing.

Small Changes: Terms & Definitions The Oxford Dictionaries chooses its word of the year on evidence based usage and how the word or expression reflects the mood of the passing year. It should come as no surprise then that ‘climate emergency’ is the 2019 Oxford word of the year. Research reveals a demonstrable increase in the language people are using to articulate information and ideas concerning climate change. However, along with increased coverage and usage comes a host of scientific jargon not to mention statistics and figures that can be overwhelming to follow let alone understand. It is however, so important to understand the basics of climate change and the concepts and terminology used in order to make informed decisions on how to live more sustainably. So this week’s small changes article is an attempt to explain some of the terms related to climate change. THE CARBON CYCLE The carbon cycle is the way carbon is stored and replaced on Earth. Carbon can be taken out (sequestered) of the atmosphere by algae, plants, trees, coral etc. and stored in the short or long term in plants, soils, peatlands, oceans and in the very long term in rocks and fossils (carbon sinks). Carbon returns to the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide (CO2) or methane (CH4) from natural sources such as decomposing plants and animals or volcanoes and from human activities such as the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas, agricultural activities (deforestation) and cement manufacture. Up until 100 years ago, volcanoes were the greatest source of carbon returning to the atmosphere but people burning fossil fuels have been adding 100 times more carbon dioxide to the air in the past century than volcanoes. THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT The greenhouse effect is one of the main factors determining the temperature of the planet. It’s a phenomenon by which certain gases (so called greenhouse gases) in the atmosphere trap heat from the sun that would otherwise escape into space and thus keeps the planet warm (like a greenhouse!). The earth’s atmosphere has always contained these heat trapping gases and they have always caused warming; without them the planet would be inhabitable. However, humans are changing the strength of the greenhouse effect (and therefore the temperature of the planet) by increasing the proportion of greenhouses gases in the air. GREENHOUSE GASES (also known as Carbon Emissions) The main greenhouses gases (GHGs)are: Carbon dioxide (CO2) - It accounts for around three quarters of the warming impact of current human greenhouse gas emissions. The key source of CO2 is the burning of fossil fuels though deforestation is also a very significant contributor. Pre industrial levels of CO2 were at 280 ppm (parts per million, a way of expressing the concentration of one component in a larger sample e.g. a concentration of 280 parts CO2 in 1 42 West Kerry Live
million parts of the atmosphere). Many scientists agree that CO2 levels should be at 350 ppm to be safe but we’re at about 400ppm at the moment. Methane (CH4) - It accounts for around 17% of the impact of current GHG emissions. Key sources include agriculture (fun fact; most of the methane emitted by cows is through burping rather than farting), fossil fuel extraction and the decay of organic waste (e.g. food waste) in landfill. Methane does not stay in the atmosphere as long as CO2 but its warming effect is much stronger (its global warming potential). Nitrous oxide (N2O) - It accounts for about 7% of the warming impact. Key sources include agriculture (especially nitrogen fertilised soils) and livestock waste. It is even more potent than methane. Water vapour is also a greenhouse gas and is responsible for about 50% of the current greenhouse effect. It is not reported under the Kyoto Protocol (an international agreement aimed to reduce GHG emissions. It covers the accounting and reporting of 6 greenhouse gases) as the amount of water vapour in the atmosphere is controlled by the temperature. Warmer air can hold more water than cooler air so as the average temperature of the earth increases the water content also increases. The higher the temperatures, the more water that will evaporate causing a positive feedback loop. The water vapour feedback loop at least doubles the amount of warming caused directly by CO2 emissions. WEATHER VS CLIMATE Weather refers to atmospheric conditions in the short term including changes in temperature, precipitation, wind etc. While the weather is always changing, the climate is the average of weather patterns over longer periods of time. Climate change are the changes seen in established weather patterns and explains why we are experiencing more frequent extreme weather events (e.g. storms, droughts). Climate change can be directly attributed to the increase in manmade greenhouse gases (carbon emissions). The climate emergency is defined as a situation
in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it. CARBON FOOTPRINT A carbon footprint is an estimate of the impact an activity such as making a product, living a certain lifestyle or running a company may have on climate change. It is based on estimating the GHG emissions by analysing the lifecycle of an activity (i.e. estimate emissions during its production, use and disposal). It is a very important tool that helps to identify waste and inefficiencies in activities. Anyone can work out the carbon footprint of their lifestyles by using one the many free carbon calculators on the internet. A drawback of these calculators is that the results can vary based on the mathematical models used and the assumptions that they make as it is impossible to measure the CO2 from all the permutations and combinations of activity. Even for simple activities such a burning a litre of petrol which releases a known measureable amount of CO2 there are still uncertainties about the emissions caused by extracting and refining the petrol before it was burned. The assumptions made can sometimes be bones of contention with lobbying groups. For example when calculating the impact of eating meat, carbon calculators generally do not differentiate between the carbon footprint created by imported meat from a grain fed, intensively reared animal and that of an organic locally grass fed animal nor do they take into account for the carbon absorbed by grasslands the animals are feeding on. Another example would be that one calculator might focus on the fuel used while flying to calculate the footprint of air travel while another might include an estimate of the climate impact of vapour trails from the plane. Despite these facts carbon footprints provide a starting point from which we can reduce our carbon footprints relative to the starting point. CARBON OFFSET/CARBON CREDIT Carbon footprints are often reported as the number of kilograms or tons of carbon dioxide equivalents an activity emits (CO2-eq – Typically
a carbon footprint is calculated by estimating not just the CO2 emissions that the activity in question causes but also any emissions of other GHGs . For simplicity these impacts are all added together and expressed as a single number in terms of the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide that would do the same amount of warming.) Carbon credit units (one unit equals to one ton of carbon dioxide) can be purchased by individuals, companies or governments to reduce the short term and long term emissions of greenhouse gases. The money is usually used to fund carbon offset projects such as the development of renewable energy or planting trees. Individuals can choose whether to buy an offset e.g. for air travel but governments and large industries are sometimes required to buy them to meet international targets. CARBON TAX
carbon removal). Failure to do so will see the planet reach the climate tipping point (the point at which climate change becomes irreversible) by 2030. It is important to note that the carbon budgets are more complex than calculating a magic number Depending on which study is referenced and the models it employs, the assumptions it relies on and a vast number of other methodological choices—the number may change. This goes some way to explaining why discussions and agreements at climate conferences such as COP25 are so difficult and that is before issues such as climate justice (the proposition that those who are least responsible for climate change suffer its greatest consequences) are taken into account.

A carbon tax is a tax levied on the carbon content of fuels (transport and energy sector) as an incentive to reduce carbon emissions. In Irelands the charge is €20 per tonne of CO2 emitted and was raised to €26 per tonne in this year’s budget for petrol and diesel. The intention is for it to hit €80 per tonne of CO2 emissions. Every euro rise in carbon tax per tonne translates as €2.51 extra per 900L refill of oil or 12 cent on a 40kg bag of coal. When rates hit €80 euro per tonne it will add €207 to 900L of oil and €9.60 to a bag of coal. CARBON BUDGET A carbon budget is the amount of carbon dioxide can be emitted by humans before temperatures spill over a potentially dangerous threshold. The data used by IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ) special report recommends that in order to keep global heating below an extra 1.5oC temperature increase the average emissions per person needs to be zero (carbon neutral emissions or net zero carbon footprint means that carbon emission must be balanced by West Kerry Live 27

Ballinclare Ambush Centenary Memorial
By mid-August 1920 the War of Independence was well underway. Crown forces had been forced out of the Dingle Peninsula with the sole exception of a strongly fortified base in Dingle town. This outpost had to be serviced from Tralee. A plan was devised by members of the 4th and 5th Battalions of the Kerry No.1 Brigade of the IRA to attack the lorry carrying supplies. An ambush was planned to take place at Ballinclare, half a mile west of Annascaul village. The armed supply lorry was attacked and after an exchange of gunfire the British surrendered. The captured soldiers of the East Lancashire Regiment were well treated and eventually set free. A substantial supply of rifles and equipment was captured and the lorry set on fire. Reprisals were expected in the locality after the ambush. Two days later a large contingent of troops and an armoured car arrived in Annascaul. Among them were members of the RIC Special Reserve – the ‘Black and Tans’, notorious for their violence against civilians. There was shooting and looting in the village. At the end of the day, one man, Paddy Kennedy, lay dead at the side of the hill in Gurteens. His funeral two days later was attended by enormous crowds. An inquest into Kennedy’s death was held at Annascaul Courthouse and the jury found that he had been ‘foully murdered’ and demanded the arrest and trial of the soldier who fired the fatal shot. The verdict was not officially accepted and the death instead was classified as ‘unjustifiable homicide’ and no proceedings were taken against the killer.

Our under-21 players (combined with GlenbeighGlencar) defended their Mid Kerry crown in a final in Cromane back in mid-March. They were unable to do so as Laune Rangers claimed the title with a late scoring flurry. To qualify for two Under-21 finals in a row points to some talent in these ranks and now they need to push on as seniors in 2020.
Coaching was highlighted in both AGMs and the club would again like to extend our thanks to all those who volunteered their time to coach our players in 2019. The coaching in our national school was also praised and thanks to Gavin O’Connor, Cathal Crosby and Sean O’Sullivan for their work at various stages through the year in this area.
The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) minor side had a fine year, winning the Central Region Division 2 title and putting in some fine displays of attacking football throughout.
SCOR NA nÓG: Well done to Cromane’s Lily O'Shea who competed in the solo singing section of the Scór na nÓg county finals in Glenbeigh last Sunday afternoon. Lily represented our club and Mid Kerry in excellent fashion, despite not progressing.
From a financial perspective, the club’s accounts are in a healthy state. Now is the time to think about developing our facilities - something we will focus on in 2020 and beyond.

The club’s Coiste na nÓg committee for 2020 is:
AGMs: The Senior and Coiste na nÓg Annual General Meetings took place last Wednesday in Cromane Community Centre.
Chairperson: Paudie McCarthy; Secretary: JP McCarthy; New assistant secretary position: Paudie McMahon; PRO: Sinead Lavin
The following club officers were returned (mostly outgoing officers) for 2020:
Paudie McCarthy praised and thanked all those players and coaches involved with Cromane underage teams this year. Our year stretched from the mini maroons to the under-14 and under-16 sides that amalgamate with Glenbeigh-Glencar.
President - Patie Healy; Vice-Presidents - Fr Michael Fleming, Christina Casey, John Joe O’Reilly, Patie Joy; Chairperson - vacant; Vice-chairperson - JP McCarthy; Secretary - Finbar Casey; Assistant secretary - Cian O'Keeffe; Treasurer - Johnny O’Connor; Assistant Treasurers - Patricia Teahan; PRO - JP McCarthy; Registrars - Patrick Casey, Liam Teahan, Paul Patrick O’Sullivan, Orla O'Connor; Insurance Officer - Dave Morris; Assistant Insurance Officer - Stephen Scales; County Board Delegate Patrick Casey; Mid-Kerry Board Delegates - Seán O’Reilly, David Moroney; Coiste na nÓg County Board Delegates - Seán O’Reilly; Mid Kerry Coiste na nÓg/Central Region Delegate - Seán O’Reilly; Scór Officer - Eibhlín Duffy; Coaching Officer - Gavin O’Connor; Health and Wellbeing Officer - Owen Joy; Children’s officer - Sandra Healy. The club executive aims to elect a chairperson in the New Year. The highlight of the year for the club was the presence of Kieran O’Sullivan on the Kerry minor football side. It was great to see the Cromane name on these programmes once again as well as seeing Kieran lining out in green and gold in Pairc Ui Chaoimh and Croke Park. Well done, Kieran. Our senior football team had a Jekyll and Hyde year. They started well but an agonising extra-time defeat in a county junior championship replay to eventual winners Ballyduff knocked them back. Some narrow losses in the county league meant promotion was out of our reach before the final set of games. If they can turn these narrow losses into wins in 2020 then they can make real progress.
Highlights of the year included the following: * Our under-8s and under-10s continued their football development with a series of blitzes and challenge games throughout the year. * The GGC under-14s claimed the Mid Kerry C final beating Laune Rangers on September 22 by 5-12 to 1-9. * Under-14s competing in Central Region Division 2 final at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney on August 27, losing to Desmonds 2-10 to 4-9. Our players played at a famous venue and it was a great experience for them. * Our under-16 player Jason O'Connor’s progress was marked with this presence on the Kerry South U15 development panel. * Under-14 team-mates Liam O'Neill and Darragh Crosby appeared on the Kerry South U14 development panel. * Our under-12 side had notable wins against Gneeveguilla, Desmonds, and Keel. They were really punching above their weight in County League with games against Spa and Kerins O'Rahillys first teams helping their development. * For our under-16s - it was a tough year. This team is mostly young and players at the lower age will benefit from their experiences this year. Most are underage again in 2020.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our wonderful clients, collaborators and partners. We had a busy, inspiring and innovative year and we’re really looking forward to building on this in 2020. Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Jimín Mháire Thaidhg 100 bliain ar an bhfód! Is mór é mo chion is mo mheas ar Phádraig Ó Siochfhradha nó an Seabhac mar is fearr aithne air. Thána fána anáil chomh fada siar le 1965, bliain tar éis bás dó agus mé i Rang a Sé sa bhunscoil. Is amhlaidh a bhí d’ádh orainn Jimín Mháire Thaidhg a bheith ina théacsleabhar againn. Bhí an leabhar áirithe seo difriúil le gach aon leabhar eile im mhála scoile. Is amhlaidh a bhí garsún do-dhearmadta ar comhaos liom féin ag caint liom agus é ag cur síos ar eachtraí a shaoil i nGaeltacht Chorca Dhuibhne ag tús an fichiú haois. Ní hamháin sin, bhí féith an ghrinn go smior ann i dtreo is go mbíodh an bhean rialta a bhí dom mhúineadh sna tríthí gáirí aige go minic. Bhí cumhacht ar leith ag pearsantacht Jimín agus beocht anama a thug misneach is ardú croí dom. Agus fós féin tugann an scéal ardú meanman dom. Mo sheacht mbeannacht ort a Jimín uasail, ghil! Tá 100 bliain ann i mbliana ó deineadh trácht ar Jimín don gcéad uair. Agus tá cion ag scata daoine air fós. Mar fhianaise air seo bhí ana-thóir ar an dá eagrán den leabhar a foilsíodh sa bhliain 2016. D’fhoilsigh An tSnáthaid Mhór, Béal Feirste an dá leagan nua agus Ríona Nic Congáil a chuir in eagar. Bheartaigh sí eagrán caighdeánach agus eagrán canúnach a chur ar fáil ag an am gcéanna. Tá an dá eagrán díolta amach le tamall ach beidh an dara cló ar fáil go luath sa mBliain Nua. Sa réamhrá suimiúil a chuir Ríona leis an gcéad eagrán deir sí gur mar shraithscéal san irisleabhar An Lóchrann a chuir an Seabhac Jimín in aithne ar dtúis. Ba é Ó Siochfhradha an t-eagarthóir ar an iris ag an am. Foilsíodh an scéal idir mí Dheireadh Fómhair 1919 agus mí na Nollag 1920. Foilsíodh mar leabhar é sa bhliain 1921. Eagrán scoile a bhí ann ina raibh 12 chaibidil. Fágadh 3 chaibidil ar lár, dhá cheann a bhain le cleamhnas agus pósadh agus ceann eile fé Phúca Bheit Mhóire. Tá na trí chaibidil sin ar fáil in eagrán nua Nic Congáil agus is maith ann iad. Ar a shon go raibh Pádraig Ó Siochfhrada gafa le litríocht agus le cúrsaí eagarthóireachta le linn a shaoil bhisiúil is iontach liom nár chuir sé scéal a bheatha shuimiúil féin i gcló. Ach nuair a bhí ceithre scór bliain slánaithe aige thosnaigh sé ar a chuimhní cinn a chur ar pár. Bhí an tseoid lámhscribhinne seo slán sábháilte aige agus i seilbh mhac dearthár don tSeabhac - Pádraig Ó Siochrú eile - ar feadh na mblianta. Táimid fé chomaoin ag Pádraig agus ag Caitríona Ní Chathail, Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne as an lámhscríbhinn seo a réiteach don gcló fen dteideal Beir mo Dhúthracht. Is maith mar a thugann an teideal so aitheantas don amhrán cáiliúil den teideal céanna de chuid an tSeabhaic. Ní féidir a shéanadh ach gur chaith sé a dhúthracht agus a dhícheall le teanga agus cultúr a thíre má chaith éinne riamh é. Foilsíodh Beir mo Dhúthracht sa bhliain 2014 agus d’fhág Caitríona rian slachtmhar a láimhe ar an saothar. Cailleadh Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha, trócaire air sa bhliain 2018. De réir a chuntais féin pósadh tuismitheoirí an tSeabhaic Pádraig Peats Ó Siochfhradha agus Ellen Ní Chléirigh sa bhliain 1882. Saolaíodh Pádraig in 1883, an chéad duine de naonúr clainne. Tháinig a dheirfiúr Cáit ina dhiaidh. Ní foláir nó gur le hómós dise a tugadh Cáit ar dheirfiúr Jimín leis. Bhí Peats, athair Phádraig ina mhaor géim agus coille ag Tiarna Fionntrá i dTigh Mór Bhaile an Ghóilín, mar a bhfuil Coláiste Íde sa lá atá inniu ann. Mar mhaor géim bhí lóistín saor in aisce aige i ngiorracht don Tigh Mór. Ar dtúis bhí dhá sheomra aige i bhfoirgneamh i gclós an Tí Mhóir. Is ann a saolaíodh Pádraig óg. De réir mar a bhí an chlann ag méadú thuig an Tiarna go raibh áit níos fairsinge ag teastáil. Bhronn sé tigh nua, cluthar orthu in aice na trá. Is léir gur chaith Pádraig óige ana-shona eachtrúil fé scáth na gcoillte cosi trá i mBaile an Ghóilín. Chuir sé spéis i ngach aon ní mórthimpeall air. Bhí sé de shíor ag foghlaim ósna daoine a bhí mórthimpeall air, go háirithe óna Dhaid a bhí ana-eolgaiseach ar chrainn, ar éanlaithe, agus ar an dúlra i gcoitinne. Is annamh a bhíodh Pádraig díomhaoin. Chuir sé ainmneacha na gcrann agus na n-éan de ghlanmheabhair. Rud eile a mhúin a athair dó ná conas gunna a láimhseáil i gceart. Is amhlaidh a choimeádadh Peats gunnaí spóirt an Tí Mhóir ina thigh féin chun aire a thabhairt dóibh. Mhúin sé do Phádraig conas iad a ghlanadh agus a olú, teagasc a chuaigh chun tairbhe dhó blianta ina dhiaidh sin agus é ina Oifigeach Ceannais ar Óglaigh na hÉireann. In ainneoin spéis dhiamhair a bheith ag Pádraig san oideachas a chuir a hathair air is beag má chuir sé aon tsuim sna ceachtanna a fuair sé ar Scoil na mBráithre sa Daingean. Bhí Gaelainn labhartha aige ó dhúchas gan dabht, agus Béarla leis ach ní raibh an Ghaelainn á múineadh sa chóras 58 West Kerry Live
oideachais le linn óige Phádraig. Bhí ana-dhúil aige sa léitheoireacht, áfach, go háirithe scéalta fén Wild West mar a dhearbhaíonn sé in Beir mo Dhúthracht. De réir a chéile chuir sé suim sa stair. Léigh sé The Story of Ireland le A.M. O’Sullivan nuair a bhí sé trí bliana déag. Thosnaigh sé ag léamh an nuachtáin The Freeman’s Journal leis. Sa tslí seo músclaíodh spiorad an náisiúnachais ann. Ach bhí an t-ábhar léitheoireachta agus an bholscaireacht ar fad trí mheán an Bhéarla. Ní raibh léamh ná scríobh na Gaelainne ag Pádraig go fóill. D’athraigh sé sin go léir áfach tar éis dó freastal ar ócáid stairiúil sa Daingean, Domhnach éigin ag tús an fichiú aois. Chuir Conradh na Gaeilge scoláire mór le rá go dtí an Daingean an Domhnach úd chun suim a Ghaelainn a mhuscailt i muintir Chorca Dhuibhne. Tomás Bán Ua Concheanainn ab ainm dó, ó Chonamara ó dhúchas. Bhuel is cinnte go gcuaigh sé i bhfeidhm ar Phádraig a bhí seacht mbliana déag ag an am. Deir sé sna cuimhní cinn: ‘Mhúscail rud éigin istigh ionam. Bhraitheas fonn agus díograis ionam. Tháinig solas tuisceana ionam i leith na Gaelainne agus a tábhacht is a héifeacht”. Is féidir a rá gur tháinig an Seabhac ar an saol an Domhnach cinniúnach úd, é baistithe i spiorad nua réabhlóideach ar son teanga agus tíre. Cheannaigh sé Simple Lessons in Irish leis an Athair Ó Gramhnaigh an lá céanna. Chuaigh sé i mbun foghlama láithreach bonn. É féin a mhúin léamh agus scríobh na teanga dó féin. Níorbh fhada gur thosnaigh sé ag múineadh na gcomharsan agus clár dubh dá dhéantús féin in úsáid aige. Chuir Conradh na Gaeilge go Cathair Saidhbhín é mar Thimire. Bhí sé bliain is fiche ag an am. Mhúin sé le fuinneamh agus le díograis agus le spiorad dochloíte a mhair go lá a bháis. Is féidir le héinne Jimín Mháire Thaidhg a phriocadh suas agus foghlaim as mar a d’fhoghlaim an Seabhac as na Simple Lessons má tá an toil ann, tá an t-ábhar ar fáil sa leabhar iontach so. Sin é an tobar. Bí ag ól leat! Ní fhéadfaí comóradh níos fearr a dhéanamh ar laoch mór Chorca Dhuibhne ná a chuid Gaelainne a choimeád beo. Is linne féin an rogha. Dar ndóigh is é an fonn a níos fiach! (Buíochas: Máire Ní Iarlaithe)

Nollaig Shona agus Athbhliain faoi Mhaise Daoibh
Nósanna Nollag Tosnaíonn Féile na Nollag go luath san Ollainn, ar an séú lá de Mhí na Nollag, Lá San Nioclás. An lá san téann daoine timpeall gléasta in éadaí easpaig agus tugann siad féiríní dos na leanaí. Is ón Ollainn a tháinig nós San Nioclás chugainn. Téann leanaí i Mexico ó dhoras go doras ar feadh naoi lá roimh Nollaig i gcuimhne ar Mhuire agus Seosamh a chuaigh ó dhoras go doras ag lorg lóistín an oíche úd i mBeithil fadó. Cnagann siad ar na doirse ag iarraidh cead isteach, ach ní ligeann éinne isteach iad. Ar deireadh ligtear isteach iad in áit speisialta agus bíonn féasta Nollag acu. Bíonn liathróid mhór ar crochadh ón síleáil. Is é seo an Pinata. Cuirtear púicín ar na leanaí agus tugann siad fé’n bPianata le maidí. Nuair a bhriseann siad an craiceann titeann milseáin agus bronntanais de gach sort ar fud an urláir. Tugtar iad san ar fad dos na leanaí. San Iodáil sa lá atá inniu ann cuireann an duine is óige sa tigh dealbh den Leanbh Íosa sa mhainséar go déanach Oíche Nollag. Ní thugann muintir na hIodáile bronntanais dá chéile, de ghnáth, go dtí an séú lá d’Eanair. Tugann siad ar an lá san iad i gcuimhne ar na bronntanais a thug na Trí Ríthe go dtí an Leanbh Íosa.
Táim ar fáil chun éisteacht agus oibriú ar do shon i gconaí, más féidir liom aon chabhair a thabhairt cuir glaoch orm 087-6039758
Bhí sé de nós i Sasana fadó boscaí a chur sna sáipéil roimh Nollaig. Chuireadh na daoine saibhre airgead sna boscaí seo. Ba ghnách na boscaí a oscailt tráthnóna Lae Nollag agus an t-airgead a roinnt ar na daoine bochta an lá ina dhiadh sin. Is ón nós san a tháinig an t-ainm ‘Lá na mBoscaí’ (Boxing Day), an t-ainm atá acu i Sasana ar Lá ’le Stíofáin (Lá an Dreoilín), an séú lá is fiche de mhí na Nollag. Is beag tigh ná bíonn crann Nollag ann i gcomhair na Féile. Bhí meas speisialta ag daoine riamh ar an gcrann síorghlas. Thaispeanaidís an meas san le linn na bhféilte a bhíodh ar siúl ag an am san don mbliain, fiú amháin sular rugadh Íosa Críost. Chuir dath síorghlas na gcrann san an tSíoraíocht féin i gcuimhne do dhaoine agus, chomh maith leis sin, bhí na daoine ana-thógtha leis an neart a choimeád na crainn sin glas i rith an gheimridh ar fad." I Sasana, in 1842 thosnaigh nós na gCártaí Nollag.
Oíche Chinn Bhliana 1727 I 1727 agus brat na Fraince ardaithe acu, tháinig bád Francach a bhí tar éis teacht ó Nantes isteach go Portmagee, An Caladh, in Uíbh Ráthach i gContae Chiarraí. Ar uair an mheán oíche, agus na haon ní ciúin, mháirseáil grúpa mairnéalach le tóirsí suas tríd an mbaile agus píobaire chun tosaigh orthu. I lár an ghrúpa bhí fear gléasta i ngiobail agus cuma chríonna, chaite, chrampálta air agus cuma air go raibh an bás aige. Scaoileadh piléar agus thit an seanduine ina chnap amhail is go raibh sé marbh. As an slua léim fear óg, lúfar, gléasta go snasta agus mhínigh gurbh é an seanduine an tseanbhliain a bhí díreach imithe agus gurbh é féin an bhliain nua úr a bhí tosnaithe. Bhí muintir an bhaile chomh tógtha leis seo go ndeineadar a gcuid féin do. Tá siad á chleachtadh ó shin i leith. Agus gach Oíche Chinn Bhliana ó 1727 téann siad trí na sráideanna le fóid lasta ar phící acu le ceol ag léiriú an dráma bhig. Sa bhliain 2000 tháinig na sluaite go dtí an pharáid. Ná dein nós agus ná bris nós. Athbhliain faoi mhaise dhaoibh go léir. - An Nollaig, Michael Houlihan (aistrithe go Gaeilge)

Ó Mhárthain
mar a bhfuil láthair cogaidh ag Sasana agus sna Sé Chontae. Más fíor tá tacaíocht láidir ag Éirinn sa Bhruiséal rud a meastar a chabhródh linne sa ghearr agus sa bhfaid théarma.
Breandán Mac Gearailt An Nollaig Tá an Nollaig ag béal ‘n dorais againn agus is mó duine a bhíonn sásta. Bíonn daoine óga ag brostú abhaile le Féile na Nollag á cheiliúradh. Bíonn fáilte is áthas ar thuismitheóirí go mbíonn caoi acu cúrsaí an tsaoil a phlé lena gclann.
Cé go raibh vóta SF titithe, níor chaill siad mórán. Ní mar sin atá forlás an DUP. Is dócha gur é cailliúínt suíochán Emma Little Pengelly díomá mór ar DUP ag an SDLP agus ag cur leis an ngearbh bua John Finucane SF i dTuaisceart Bhéal Feirste mar a treascaraíoch Nigel Dodds DUP. Ba dhóigh leat go raibh sé daortha chun na croiche, bhí an oiread san do phus is bhreidhil air. Cúpla Ceist.
Níl oiread ag filleadh ó Shasana anois mar a bhíodh – tá saol eile ann. Tá obair ar fáil i scata áiteanna in Éirinn seachas mar a bhí. Tá béim mhór ar thionscail na turasóireachta a sheasann an bhliain ar fad i gcásanna áirithe.
1.Cé chomh fada a mhair an duine, le linn Ré na Cloiche?
Bíonn daoine óga ag iarraidh a bheith sa bhaile don Nollaig agus daoine is dócha do gach aos. Is cuimhin liom go maith é. Bíonn saolú an tSlánathóra ina ócaid ag scata.
3. Cé dúirt, tá cead ag gach aon duine mo thuairimí seo bheith acu?
Tá breis airgid ag scata daoine rud ná bíodh ach dá mhéid é an t-airgead luíonn an bás i saol an lae inniu chomh mór le aon uair sa stair. Seans ná fuil daoine chomh dea-mhóideach agus go bhfuil cleachtais eile ag baint barr-thuisle as an bhFíor Fháilte. N’fheadar fé sin- tá an saol ag athrú ach leanann an grá dá gceanntar agus dá muintir ag furmhór mhór an phobail.
5. Ní ionann réitithe agus an ceart. 6. Labhrann eolas ach éistíonn eagna. 7. Gan amhras bíonn gortaithe agus marú ag baint le dornalaíocht, ach ní bhíonn aon cheann acu díobháileach.! 8. Cad as a thagann an focal ‘COP. 9. Cén stat i Meiriceá ná fuil ach siolla amháin ina ainm? 10. An mó doras ar an Thigh Bán Mheiriceá? Guím Nollaigh Mhór mhaith sásta síochanta oraibh go léir. 9. Maine,
Gan dabht is minic go mbíonn clanna ag ceiliúradh ach maolú ar a ndíograis dá mbeadh duine nó beirt dá muintir tréis bháis i rith na bliana. Déarfaidh daoine ná fuil oiread suáilceacht sa Nollaig sa tsaol atá inniu againn seachas mar a bhíodh.
4.Tá dhá mhí ádh sa tsaol, gan a bfhuil uait a fháilt agus é a fháil.
10. 410.
Bíonn cleachta, ceol agus beagán don ól ann chomh maith. Is dócha gur iad na tuistí is mó a bhaineann sólás as an Nollaig nuair a castar an chlann ar an sean- bhaile. Bíonn dóchas, grá agus sásamh aigne ortha.
2. Cé dúirt, ‘if you are going through Hell, keep going?
Oíche Nollag agus Lá Nollag bíonn daoine ag ceiliuradh na fhéile ina slí féin. Bogann ar a gcroí agus ar a meon. Bíonn grá Dé mar abhar ag daoine éagsúla agus scata eile ag ceiliúradh grá a gcaraid agus a muintire. Ní mar a chéile a bhíonn, mar bhíodh, ach tá grá, cleachta, agus sonas ag baint leis an Nollaig do chách. ‘Sí an Nollaig mo rogha féin.
8. Ó Shasana. Constabla On Patrol. 7. Alan Minter. 6. Jimmy Hedrix. 5. An tUachtarán Nixon.
An Buailtín
4. Oscar Wilde.
Tá crot na maitheasa ar an mbaile i mbliana, soillse ildathach agus slabhraí tarraingteacha ag crochadh ag gach tigh agus gnó. Is breá leis an óige na soillse agus is dócha sinn go léir.Tá siad gléineach suáilceach agus id mhealladh agus ag díbirt aon bhreidhil go poll an amhrais.
3. Madonna. 2 Churchill. I. Ocht mbliana déag.
Caid.
Toghcháin Tá ceann na Breataine Móire ag áireamh na Sé Chontae gafa tharainn.. Bhí ardú croí ar na Caomhaigh agus a chúis acu. Theip glan ar pháirtí an Lucht Oibre. Cinnte dhein na meáin agus gcáirde slad ar cheannaire an Lucht Oibre. Thuas in Albain dhein Nicola Sturgon agus a páirti slad ar Lucht Oibre agus na Caomhaigh ansúd. Tá sí ag éileamh go mbeadh saoirse acu ó Shasana rud ná tiocfaidh comh fuirist ach d’fhéadfadh Nicola a bheith ag clunfairt agus is mó cor bealaigh aici. Sna Sé Chontae don gcéad uair níl tromlach suíochán ag an DUP. D’fheadfá a rá go raibh aiseirí fíor i gcás an SDLP agus saolú taibhseach ar an Alliance. I gcás an SDLP,bhí 16,000 + vóta breise ar an iomathóir Claire Hanna i nDeiscirt Bheal Feirste ar an DUP bhí sa Dara áit. I gcás Feabhail bhí 17,OOO ag Colm Eastwood ar SF.

Ach ar an lá agus roimhe sin bhí Marc agus scata ón bPoblacht thuas sna Sé chontae don SDLP agus cíonn tú an rath atá ar chaidreamh treas teorann. N’fheadar ach dhein Alliance go diail chomh maith. Is trua ná fuil Marc roghnaithe don olltoghchán pé uair a bheidh sé an bhliain seo chugainn. Tá scata Éireann á rá. Actors Sought in Kerry For TG4 Feature Film Actors are being sought in Kerry for various central roles in an Irish-language feature film for TG4. The film called Fanacht (Waiting) is set to go into production next year with filming taking place during the summer. It’s part of TG4’s Cine4 scheme which develops and produces high quality feature films in the Irish language. The initiative was set up in 2017 and is funded by Screen Ireland, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and TG4. The story of Fanacht is set in 1981 and sees a quiet, neglected girl sent away from her overcrowded, dysfunctional family to live with her mother’s relatives. Over the course of the summer, the young girl blossoms in their care, but in this house where there are meant to be no secrets, she discovers one. Inscéal, the film and TV production company behind the film, is currently on the look out for new acting talent fluent in Irish. It’s focusing its search in Munster and Kerry, in particular, and is interested in auditioning girls between seven and 14 years of age as well as men and women in their 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Auditions will be held in the Dingle Hub, Páirc Ghnó Cúilín, An Daingean, Co. Chiarraí over four weekend days on January 11th, 12th, 25th and 26th. Inscéal says previous acting experience is preferable, but not required, however good spoken Irish is a must. Anyone interested in auditioning or any parents/guardians interested in putting their child forward can send an email to insceal@gmail.com to book a slot. The producers need the following details from applicants: Name, age & date of birth, area/county of residence, school & class (if applicable), contact details (email & phone) and any acting experience. A sample scene from the film will be sent to each applicant ahead of the audition depending on their gender and age group." 66 West Kerry Live

láidir gan cíos cás ná cathú ar éinne. - Róisín Ní Dhúill Aimsir na Nollag Athraíonn an aimsir ana-chuid sa gheimhreadh. Bíonn na laethanta níos giorra agus bíonn an aimsir go hainnis. Ach bíonn rud amháin ann a bhíonn ana-mhaith, sí sin an Nollaig. Is breá le beagnach na héinne an Nollaig mar bíonn tú le do chlann. Faigheann tú agus tugann tú bronntanaisí dod chlann, dod chairde agus do chomharsana. Ach tá daoine ann gan aon dídean atá ag maireachtaint ar thaobh na sráide agus ní fhaigheann siad aon bhronntanaisí ná béile deas agus ní bhíonn aon chlann acu chun é a cheiliúradh. - Jeaic Mac Gearailt
