Patrick’s Day Parade In Ballyferriter At this stage we’ve stopped counting the number of years the show has been on the road. The parade brings life to the village at what is a quiet time of the year. It wouldn’t happen without the participation of the community, the participants and all the volunteers that help on the day. The theme this year is “The people of the fairy forts, their allies and there enemies”. Plenty of scope for the fertile imaginations of the little ones, their parents and anyone happy to dress for the occasion. As usual the parade will assemble at 10.30 at Aras Bhreannáin, the Comharchumainn complex and leave at 11.00. It will then make it’s way through the village, past the reviewing stand, and down to the Cluainte Holiday Homes where it will turn and come back through the village.

Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next feature at the Dingle film club will be screened on Tuesday 3rd March when the feature will be the cinematic reimagining of Jane Austen's novel Emma. The film follows Emma Woodhouse, a restless queen bee without rivals in her sleepy little town. In this glittering satire of social class and the pain of growing up, Emma must adventure through misguided matches and romantic missteps to find the love that has been there all along. The film stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Josh O'Connor, Callum Turner, Mia Goth, Miranda Hart, and Bill Nighy. The following week on Tuesday 10th March the feature will be the Oscar winning Parasite. This South Korean black comedy thriller. Jobless, penniless, and, above all, hopeless, the unmotivated patriarch, Ki-taek, and his equally unambitious family occupy themselves by working for peanuts in their squalid basement-level apartment. Then, by sheer luck, a lucrative business proposition will pave the way for an ingeniously insidious scheme, as Ki-woo summons up the courage to pose as an English tutor for the teenage daughter of the affluent Park family. Now, the stage seems set for an unceasing winner-take-all class war. How does one get rid of a parasite? 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News Louis Murchan PROPOSAL TO SLASH CAP BY BETWEEN 14% AND 19% The next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) could be set for a savage cut if proposals from the President of the European Council Charles Michel are enacted, European documents show. According to the documents, under the current 2014-2020 CAP budget – adjusted for the EU-27 (minus the UK) – €382.5 billion was allocated over the lifetime of the programme. The new proposal would represent a drop (for CAP) of over €53.2 billion or 14%. The same document indicates that the 2014-2020 CAP budget – adjusted for the EU-28 (including the UK) – was €410.3 billion. Using this as the existing, the new proposal would see a drop of over €81 billion or 19%. Under the President of the European Council”s proposal, the CAP budget for 2021-2027 would be €329.3 billion. Of this, €256.7 billion would be allocated for Pillar I. At present, Pillar I spending chiefly comprises direct payments (BPS) and ‘Greening’ subsidies. Meanwhile, the documents propose €72.5 billion for Pillar 2 (‘Rural Development’). Pillar 2 currently encompasses schemes such as the Green Low-carbon Agri-Environment Scheme (GLAS), Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) and other initiatives. In the case of Pillar I, the proposal would see a cut of between 10% and 17% (depending on which 2014-2020 CAP allocation you use as a baseline). In addition, the new (proposed) CAP budget would see €4.8 billion go to LIFE (an environmental and climate action programme); €7.5 billion for a new Just Transition Fund; and €12.5 billion for other programmes. The leaders of the EU’s 27 member states will gather for an extraordinary European Council meeting to discuss – and potentially decide – on the bloc’s multi-annual financial framework (MFF) for the next seven years. It remains to be seen if the aforementioned leaked document will form one of the key budgetary proposals going forward. Stay tuned for further details, as they emerge… FALLEN ANIMAL SCHEMES FOR FALLEN FARM STOCK The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine today announced an amendment to the Fallen Animal Scheme for Fallen Farm Stock. The objective of the revised scheme is to provide support for the collection and disposal of fallen bovines under 48 months (not subject to TSE testing), sheep and goats in accordance with EU Animal By-products (ABP) legislation. The importance of the animal collection service is well recognised by the Department, as it provides an essential commercial service to the farming community and wider public. The Department acknowledges the challenges facing the sector and has engaged intensively with all stakeholders including the Animal Collector Association and farming representative groups. The Department is confident that the amended Scheme will support the sustainability and viability of the service with the aim of ensuring a continued fallen animal collection service to the farming community. The Scheme is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in line with EU State Aid legislation. The farmer will continue to pay a fee to the Animal Collector in respect of the collection service provided, however the Department has set maximum amounts that can be charged. Participation by Animal Collectors in the amended Fallen Animal Schemes for Fallen Farm Stock is voluntary. 2020 BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME OPENS FOR APPLICATIONS The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine today advised farmers and advisors that the application process for the 2020 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and the Greening Scheme has now opened. Over the coming days, farmers will be receiving their BPS packs in the post. This will include the usual information to assist farmers in making their applications – the terms and conditions, maps and land details. However, given that all BPS applications must now submitted online there is no paper application form included in the pack. This information will assist farmers in making their online application. The closing date for BPS applications in 2020 is Friday 15th May. Farmers and advisors are urged to avail of the early opening of the application process now rather than waiting until nearer the closing date. CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR FOOD WASTE REDUCTION INITIATIVES UNDER THE RIDF This funding will further enhance the work previously funded to identify, target and address what is a rapidly growing issue not just here in Ireland but globally. Ireland generates over 1 million tonnes 8 West Kerry Live

of food waste each year. These initiatives will serve to address that fund’s overall objective of energising the rural economy by encouraging innovative job creation and sustainable enterprise development. The Call for Proposals relates to the provision of services for the support of food waste reduction projects which are designed to reduce food waste generated by food businesses, retailers/wholesalers or suppliers in rural areas. The closing date for receipt of applications is 12:00 (noon) on 3rd April 2020 and the total funding available is as follows: • €300,000 for proposals relating to the promotion and/or development of innovative food waste reduction projects which are designed to reduce food waste generated in rural areas. The maximum amount that will be paid to any project is €100,000 (excl VAT). Funding will be awarded on a competitive basis. Applications can be made via the Call for Proposals application form which is available on DAFM’s website: agriculture.gov.ie/agri-foodindustry/agri-foodandtheeconomy/ cedraschemes/foodwastereduction/ PRE-LAMBING CHECKLIST: HOW TO MAKE LIFE EASIER COME LAMBING TIME With the lambing season fast approaching for many mid-season flocks, now is the time to make sure you have everything in place. For the majority of farms, lambing will commence in the next six-to-eight weeks. Therefore, a few important tasks should be carried out to make life easy come lambing time. Going into the lambing season blind, not knowing how many lambs a ewe is carrying and what condition they are in, can lead to many problems that are irreversible. A list of jobs that should be carried out are listed below. 1). Vaccinating:- A clostridial vaccination should be given to ewes that are four-to-six weeks away from lambing. It is vitally important that ewes receive this dose as it will have a knock-on effect on their offspring. If ewes are vaccinated on an annual basis it will allow for their antibody levels to remain high, which will then be transferred to the lamb and give it protection. It is vital that a lamb receives an adequate amount of colostrum in the first few hours of life. By vaccinating ewes, farmers can drastically reduce the incidence of these diseases from occurring. Pulpy kidney is the most common type of clostridial disease found in sheep – in Ireland. It is commonly found in fast-growing lambs. These animals – that are usually over one month-of-age – are consuming high concentrate diets, or are suckling heavy milking ewes. 2). Scanning:- Scanning ewes offers farmers a number of benefits that will aid with management decisions in terms of nutrition and batching ewes according to the number of lambs they are carrying. Ewes should be scanned between 80 and 90 days post ram turnout in order to achieve accurate results. Scanning at 80 days will ensure that the scanner can pick up all of the ewes that are in-lamb. However, scanning ewes that are greater than 90 days in-lamb will make it more difficult for the scanner to identify how many lambs the ewe is carrying. The benefits of scanning include: •

It will identify empty ewes that can be culled and sold;

It will give an indication to the number of lambs a ewe is carrying;

• Ewes can also be batched according to the number of lambs they are carrying; • It will give farmers an idea of how much feed should be offered to ewes. 3). Body Condition Scoring:- It is important that farmers physically handle their sheep to see what BCS they are – to see if any ewes require preferential treatment to get them up to the required BCS. Now is the time to separate any thin ewes – under a BCS of 3.0 – and start feeding good-quality silage of at least 70% dry matter digestibility (DMD) and concentrates that contain adequate amounts of digestible undegradable protein (DUP). The best and easiest time to BCS ewes is when they are in the yard for scanning or when they are about to be vaccinated. 4). Foot-bathing;_ Lameness can be a major issue on sheep farms across the country – especially this time of year during housing. If any farmers are planning to house their ewes before lambing, now is a good time to run them through a footbath to reduce the risk of lameness spreading through the flock. The aim should be to keep the number of lame sheep

at any one time below 5%. Lameness in sheep is primarily caused by wet underfoot conditions, which farmers have experienced on their land over the last number of weeks. Farmers should group together any lame sheep and isolate them from the rest of the flock. Lame sheep will have reduced performance over the housing period and this could lead to the involuntary culling of animals. HOW MUCH COLOSTRUM DOES A LAMB REQUIRE? With Lambing upon us, or almost there, it is important to have good management practices in place at lambing to reduce lamb mortality. Good hygiene, feeding lambs adequate amounts of colostrum and knowing when your ewes are going to lamb can reduce mortality rates during the lambing season. Colostrum is the single most important feed a lamb will consume in the first few hours of life. Colostrum offers a number of health benefits, and performs three very important roles in newborn lambs. It provides an easily digestible source of energy and nutrients; provides antibodies which will form the newborn lamb’s passive immune system until it has a chance to develop its own active immune system; and it acts as a laxative to clean out the digestive tract of the newborn lamb. A newborn lamb requires 50ml/kg of colostrum in the first six hours of life. Therefore, a lamb weighing 5kg requires 250ml of colostrum every six hours. Ideally, a ewe needs to be producing 1L per lamb in the first 24 hours. In the case of a twin or triplet-bearing ewe who may have an inadequate amount of colostrum to feed her lambs, it is best practice to milk what colostrum the ewe has and divide it up equally among her lambs. Substitute colostrum should only be used as a top-up and not as alternative to colostrum from the mother. Weak lambs that are unable to suckle their mother should be tube fed colostrum. The quicker lambs get these antibodies the better chance they have of surviving. In the case of hypothermic lambs, it is best practice to administer a glucose injection.

Getting To The Bottom Of Those Ill Winds! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

6. Call in the army with the assistance of broad-spectrum probiotics. An imbalance of gut bacteria is almost always involved with excessive flatulence. Our healthy bacteria are often either underfed through a poor diet lacking in essential fibres or outnumbered by an overgrowth of the bad guys. Antibiotics or bouts of gastroenteritis can leave us particularly vulnerable by wiping out healthy bacteria leaving some foods only partially digested, rotting and stinking in our guts! 7. Activated charcoal has been used for centuries for the treatment of poisoning as it absorbs toxins and toxic gas in the intestines. Nowadays it is available as a supplement to help reduce gas and bloating. Charcoal is not recommended as a long-term remedy but is handy if you are going to the opera or need a little assurance that you are not going to let rip in public. Do not take with other medications as it can interfere with their absorption, blocking their effectiveness. Interestingly, there are charcoal underwear and cushions available that are said to absorb the fart as it exits - not too sure about these either, but worth a mention for imagery alone!

After the last few weeks of storms and hurricane winds, it might seem like it will never end, but hopefully we are in for more settled conditions soon. For some people, however, the matter of internal wind can be an endless torment and a great source of discomfort and embarrassment. Flatulence is very common and normal with every human being experiencing it, even the ladies, up to 25 times a day! It is the body's way of expelling gas (via the rectum) produced during the digestive process - of eating and breaking down food for the assimilation of nutrients. Beneficial bacteria residing in the small intestine are responsible for most of the gas passing as flatulence. These bacteria are involved in completing the digestion of certain foods such as complex carbohydrates, sugars and starches. This gas is made up of carbon dioxide, methane and hydrogen and is predominately odourless. Foul-smelling gas is caused by gases containing sulphur which is found in protein foods such as meat and eggs, as well as some cruciferous vegetables (cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage). For most, flatulence does not cause problems but if it is becoming a nuisance there are some measures you can take to improve digestion and reduce your personal emissions!

All things considered, excessive flatulence is more symptomatic of a poorly functioning digestive system. The cause can be wide-ranging but will most likely come down to diet and gut micro-organisms. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), constipation, lactose intolerance, food intolerances, coeliac disease, gastroenteritis and malabsorption issues often are accompanied by excessive flatulence and may warrant further investigation. For most people, emissions can be greatly reduced by adjusting the diet and the way you eat. Good to know that rather than throw caution to the wind, all you need to do is pay a little more attention to it! FITFOOD SPRINGTIME

8-week Nutrition Programme for Weight Loss and Seasonal Wellness

1. Eat slowly with your mouth closed, chew your food well and avoid large volumes of liquids during meals. Swallowing air while eating is responsible for most gas coming back up and out as burps, but some air can take the low road too! Give your digestive system a helping hand by chewing food until it is liquid - particularly protein foods to reduce bloating and extra gas being produced by over-worked bacteria dealing with poorly masticated foods. Too much liquids taken at mealtimes may dilute stomach acid and digestive enzymes resulting in more gas and incomplete breakdown of foods leaving the stomach. 2. Air can also find its way to the intestines in food and beverages. Bubble trouble is found in fizzy drinks, beers, sodas, milk shakes even sponge cakes and soufflés! 3. Beans and lentils are a great source of nutrition but have garnered a bad name when it comes to gas! Instead of ditching your good intentions to eat more of these foods- improve their digestibility by soaking them for at least 12 hours and boiling them slowly for about 2 hours. A strip of Kombu (kelp seaweed) will also make beans easier to digest and reduce the windy factor associated with eating beans! Remember, the benefits will outweigh the negatives on this one! 4. Foods sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (found in almost all processed foods) can also contribute to bloating and flatulence because the small intestine cannot absorb large amounts of fructose. Sorbitol, maltitol and xylitol can also have similar effects. The same applies to fruit juices which contain imbalanced fructose and sorbitol levels without the fibre of the original fruit. 5. Digestive aids such as bitter herbs (herbal apertifs) and digestive enzymes can aid digestion by improving the breakdown of certain foods. Our ability to produce the necessary enzymes required for digestion can be impaired by stress, age, medications and illness. Taking an enzyme supplement can help boost and replace diminishing enzyme levels another possibility in bloating and flatulence. 12 West Kerry Live

Struck the Old Man

Edited By Ted Creedon

A brig from Liverpool to Limerick, laden with potashes, Captain Jones and six hands on board, struck on a sunken rock, called the Old Man, outside Dingle Bay, on Sunday night week. She drifted for a few minutes towards the land, by which the crew were enabled to escape from the bowsprit to the shore, two or three minutes before she went down in very deep water.

Close Encounter Off The Blaskets From – Leeds Intelligencer, 13 July 1756 Extract of a letter from Dingle dated June 18. ‘On the 15th instant we sailed from Dingle on a party of pleasure on board the Morning Star, belonging to the Knight of Kerry. At eight in the evening, three leagues westward of the Blasquets, met a French Privateer who immediately sent a broadside into us. We returned fire with eight carriage guns and four swivel guns and continued an engagement till eleven when she bore away from us in a shattered condition. We continued our chace [sic] till six in the morning when we saw a snow bearing down on us which we concluded was her consort. [snow – a square-rigged vessel with two masts]. The gentlemen on board the Morning Star were the Knight of Kerry, Colonel Burton, Major Burton, David Meredyth and Mr. Thomas Collis. The Knight had a contusion by the wind of a ball [cannon ball] and one of our men lost his left arm’.

Giralda Wrecked From – Lloyd’s List, 28 May 1906 The dandy Giralda, of and from St. Brieuc [Brittany] for Dingle in ballast, anchored off Dingle Lighthouse on May 25. Owing to a change of wind she drove on the rocks at Lighthouse Point. In a few minutes her bottom was bumped out of her and the crew had barely left her in the small boat when she heeled over. [dandy – old name for a small vessel with a mizzen sail].

Fatal Accident From – Dublin Daily Nation, 10 February 1899 A very sad fatal accident occurred near Annascaul, West Kerry, last evening. A farmer named Denis Galvin was on his way home from town, driving his horse which was yoked to a common cart. At a place called Garrynadur the animal shied and Galvin was thrown on to the road with violence. His hand clung to the reins and the wheels of the cart passed over his body inflicting severe bruises. Some neighbours who witnessed the accident succeeded in stopping the runaway. The injured farmer was placed on the cart and conveyed home where he died in a short time after.

Dangerous Pretender From – Nottingham Review, 12 December 1828. Some hundreds of printed copies of a very extraordinary document, purporting to be a proclamation from the King of Sardinia, have been seized on board a vessel which arrived in Dingle Bay, on the 24th November. The vessel sailed from Trieste. The paper is headed as follows: “Proclamation. – Charles Felix, by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, Ireland and Sardinia.”

From – Liverpool Mercury, 6 January 1826

The crew arrived at Dingle the following morning, where they experienced every kindness from Captain Bowie, commander of the Water Guard [Coast Guard]. [The Old Man – known locally as An Sean Duine - is a rock located off Dunmore Head].

Horses die in fire. From – Kerry Evening Post, 30 June 1915 A serious fire took place last Saturday afternoon (fair day) at the back premises of Mr. Michael T. Moriarty, Strand Street, Dingle, which resulted in the destruction of three horses and four ponies. One of the horses was the well-known racehorse ‘Empty’.

All the animals were Mr. Moriarty’s property except one horse which belonged to Mr. John Moriarty of Gallerus. The fire was noticed about 2.30 and all efforts to get the animals out of the stables failed. The tide was, at the outbreak, close up to the railway track near the stables and a plentiful supply of water was at hand but the efforts of several willing workers failed to extinguish the flames and the building was completely gutted.

Loss of the Venus From – Kentish Gazette, 15 March 1783 They write from Bristol that the Venus, from St. Kitts [Caribbean] for Bristol, was lately lost in Dingle Bay and all the crew perished.

A Public Meeting about the ‘Pobal ar Aire’ Scheme will be held in …

Sad death by drowning From – Tralee Chronicle, 16 December 1870 We have just learned the death by drowning, near Castlegregory, of a woman named Margaret Murphy, wife of Sub-Constable Malachi Murphy, at present stationed in Tipperary. It would appear the poor woman had been residing with her husband in Tipperary but one of her children having contracted disease of the eye she returned to her native village Castlegregory, in the hope of the child’s recovery. However, she was attacked by a violent fever and in a fit of delusion made her escape from the house. She was missing for some days and on yesterday, the unfortunate woman’s body was found on the strand, having been washed in by the tide.

Loss Of The Falls From – Bath Chronicle, 15 December 1768 The Falls, Campbell [Master], from Londonderry to Leghorn [Livorno,Italy] is totally lost at Smeranick Bay [sic] near Dingle and one man drowned.

Cromane News Jane Casey Cromane GAA SENIORS: Mid Kerry League (round 5): Cromane 2-11, Glenbeigh-Glencar 4-16 The Cromane seniors had their first run out in a weather-interrupted three weeks in Glenbeigh last Saturday afternoon. The game was played on a terrific surface that is a credit to the Glenbeigh-Glencar club. Our start, however, wasn’t so terrific as we were stuck in the blocks and trailed by 1-5 to no score after 15 minutes. A goal from Mikey Houlihan got was back in the game. Minutes later we coughed up a glorious goal chance to level the game. It was a crucial miss as Glenbeigh-Glencar soon capitalised with Gavan O’Grady goaling for the home side on the stroke of half-time to give them a six-point cushion at the break: 2-8 to 1-5. Our lads kept chipping away at this lead in the early stage of the second half. We got to within three (2-14 to 2-11) when Darren Houlihan bundled home a scramble in the GlenbeighGlencar square but that was as good as it got.

From Dingle to Cara Projects, Kenya During the Christmas season people gave generously to cribs in the 3 Churches of the Parish. This year the Parish Pastoral Council decided to give the proceeds, €2,437 to the Cara Projects Kenya. We are happy to hear that the money went to a worthy cause and made a difference in the lives of the young ladies who travelled as well as the many lives they touched in the outskirts Ngong, Kenya. Below is an account from those who travelled. We would like to thank the Dingle Parish for donating the money raised by Parishioners’ donations to the Crib during Christmas towards our journey for the Cara Projects in Kenya. The money raised has made an amazing impact on the charity and the girls lives. Twice a year 40 volunteers come from Ireland to help around the centre and improve the facilities that they live in. We were lucky enough to be three of those 40 volunteers in January 2020. Our time in Kenya was an extremely memorable experience. For two weeks we stayed in an all girls orphanage situated on the outskirts of Ngong. When we arrived, we were greeted with a warm welcome by 40 children from the age of 7 months to 18 years old. During our time in Kenya we painted, planted, built, and generally helped out around the centre and most importantly developed the most amazing bonds with beautiful people. The worst part about the whole trip was leaving all the girls. We are planning on hopefully travelling to Kenya once again next year.

The Long Cycle Home Memoirs of an epic cycle from New Zealand to West Kerry

Tomas Mac an t-Saoir

Enjoying a little taste of home. Howdy! Welcome back to another installment from New Zealand. It's been another fun & action packed 2 weeks since the last update! I'm now currently in Wellington - the capital of New Zealand. It's a lot smaller than Auckland, with a population of about 420,000 people. Wellington is the world's southernmost capital of a sovereign state, & it's also the windiest city in the world by average wind speed. It's a pretty densely populated city, because of the restricted amount of land between land & sea. I'll be spending about a week in Wellington as I've enough to keep me busy! Each day is pretty packed, between sightseeing & having people to meet. With a bit of relaxing thrown in too! I've my ferry ticket for the South Island booked for Thursday, February 27th. For my first few days in Wellington I stayed with a Cork couple, Steve Wallace & his wife, Nessa. I've now moved to another house to stay with a lad called Lorcan Byrne. So Lorcan and his best mate Nico (2 Dubs) rode down Africa too. They left about 3 months after me, so we were constantly in touch & I was trying to help the lads as much as I could with

information & contacts etc. Fast forward to July, and when the two lads flew home to Ireland from South Africa they came straight to Tigh an t-Saorsaigh for their homecoming party. A load of family & friends came down from Dublin and we had a great night! The route from New Plymouth where I left you at in my last update to Wellington wasn't the most exciting. I took the quickest route, as I want to spend as much time as I can in the South Island before my Visa runs out. I have until mid-April. I'm actually supposed to fly on March 14th but I'm going to give that flight a miss, and instead book a new flight. The perks of solo travelling and not having a schedule to keep! Though it wasn't the most exciting cycle to Wellington, some of the scenery was beautiful and I met a whole bunch of people along the way. What was supposed to be 2 nights in Whanganui for example turned into 6 nights as I stayed with a lovely Irish/Kiwi family & we spent the weekend at their beach camper. Another Irish woman organized for me to give a talk at her sons primary school, so that was good fun and a lovely experience. The kids asked some gas questions! My route for the South Island is pretty straight forward. I'll shoot down the West Coast to Invercargill, and then back up the East Coast to Christchurch, almost cycling the whole perimeter of the island. No doubt they'll be some detours too. I'm keen to see as much of the South Island as I can as I keep being told how beautiful it is. I don't think I'll be disappointed! They'll be many highlights, ranging from the beautiful Abel Tasman, to Queenstown, the Catlins, and much more. From there I'll finish up in Christchurch and fly to Australia. I'm rethinking my Australia route seeing as I'll be spending an extra month in New Zealand. Instead of riding across Australia, I may cycle up the East Coast to Cairns which is supposed to be a spectacular route. I can get a cheap flight then from Cairns to Asia someplace, probably Bali in Indonesia. But nothing is set in stone yet. I'll decide when I get to Sydney when I settle on a Australia route.

Distance Cycled - 1,438 km Metres Climbed - 12,873 m Saddle Time - 75 hours Days Cycled - 15 Days Off - 22 Average Day's Cycling - 95.86 km Total Days in New Zealand - 37 Nights in Paid Accommodation - 0 Nights Camping - 3 (paid â‚Ź6 for camping one of these nights) Nights in People's Homes - 34 Punctures - 0 Bike Maintenance - 1 broken gear cable from the flight, & 1 broken spoke Friends Made - Heaps!! Solo Cycling Days - 14 Non Solo Cycling Days - 1 Thanks to everyone for the support so far. It's much appreciated and glad you're all enjoying following along! MĂle maith agaibh!

I'll finish up with some stats from my spell on the North Island :

Small Changes: Greenwashing

as most compostable coffee cups are currently made using PLA, any that end up as marine litter will not break down at all as PLA is not degradable in seawater. As consumers become more informed about the effects of materials derived from fossil fuels and as more innovative bio-plastics are developed, it is likely that we will see further increases in compostable alternatives for sale. While these are preferable to materials made from fossil fuels, so called eco products and packaging still require a lot of resources to make them so it is really a case of swopping one type of disposable item for another type of disposable item, albeit a less toxic option. In addition to questioning the environmental marketing of products to avoid greenwashing and being informed on how to properly dispose of products at the end of their life cycle, avoiding or reducing our consumption and choosing reusable alternatives wherever possible (e.g. keep-cups, water bottles, cotton cloths instead of wipes etc.) are small changes that we can all make.

Kermit the frog was spot on when he sang ‘It’s not easy being green’. Trying to choose the most environmentally sustainable products and services is not always straightforward as everything we purchase will have some impact on the environment. Choices are made even more difficult when companies and organisations engage in greenwashing, a form of marketing spin to persuade the public that their products, aims and policies are environmentally friendly even though this may be far from the truth. Common greenwashing tactics are to use meaningless terms such as natural, organic, plant based or bio-based when marketing a product. One of the most prevalent words displayed on packaging is biodegradable, which many consumers confuse with compostable. In order to be able to call a material or product compostable it needs to meet all the requirements of European or American standards and be certified. Compostable means that a product is capable of breaking down fully within a specific time (usually 90 days) and under specific conditions (e.g. moisture, pH, oxygen). The resultant compost must be non-toxic and safe for the environment (at the end of a cycle you end up with fertiliser). The word biodegradable on the other hand has no legal definition. It means that a material can be broken down (degraded) by the action of microorganisms or other living organisms over time but this degradation does not have a time limit so it could take months, years or centuries. In addition, while everything breaks down over time (even oil based plastics) it does not mean they disappear – biodegradable materials just break down into smaller pieces, often leaving toxic residue behind. This information makes it seem straightforward enough - choose packaging (bioplastics for example) and products (bamboo toothbrush for instance) that are compostable (not just biodegradable) and you can feel virtuous! Except, there is of course a catch. Labelling industry standards and waste services make things confusing so not all compostable items are suitable for home composting. For example, polylactic acid (PLA) is a bioplastic made from corn starch which makes up a quarter of all compostable plastics sold worldwide. It is used in compostable coffee cups, sandwich boxes and salad containers etc. This type of packaging will break down in 12 weeks to water, carbon dioxide and a non-toxic biomass but only under specific industrial scale composting conditions. A home compost heap will not reach the temperatures needed to break it down and so it must be placed in the brown bin which not everyone has access to. Furthermore, compostable materials are not designed to be recycled so if you mistakenly place PLA containing plastics in the recycling bin instead of the brown bin (easy to do as bioplastics are often indistinguishable from traditional plastics), it could contaminate recycling streams. When not disposed of properly, compostable material can have a similar impact to regular materials because it needs specific requirements to break down quickly (i.e. oxygen). Take disposable coffee cups as an example. In Ireland, we generally do not have segregated street waste bins. This means that even if the half a million disposable coffee cups that are currently used each and every day in Ireland were compostable (as opposed to being biodegradable as many are currently labelled), most would likely end up in a landfill or an incinerator as packaging from on the go purchases are usually disposed of in public rubbish. Bhaineadh sí sásamh as na gamhna óga agus an taon ainmhí nár lú lei an sioc ná é ná an t-asal. Bhí cúis leis seo mar maidin amháin agus í ag dul ar scoil bhuail sí le asal ar an mbóthar. Tharraing sí eireaball an asail, má dhein raid sé agus fuair an bhean bhocht lascadh do chic isteach sa phus agus briseadh cuid dá fiacla, bhí seans leí gur fiacla linbh ab ea iad. Bhí creideamh láidir ag Cáit. Níor chaill sí an tAifreann riamh agus deirtí an Phaidrín Pháirteach nó an Choróin sa tigh go rialta timpeall a 9 a chlog san oíche agus an chlann ag éirí suas. Theádh sí go hOilithreachtaí cosúil le Cnoc Mhuire nó Lourdes. Chreid sí go láidir sna paidreacha. Is cuimhin liom nuair a bhíos óg agus ag éirí aníos go mbíodh tromluí trom orm faid is a bhínn im chodhladh. Bhí mo thuismitheoirí ana bhuartha fúm, ach nuair a chuala Cáit é chuir sí chugainn Ortha an Tromluí . Áine máthair Mhuire

Is onóir agus pribhléid dom gur iarr clann Cháit, mo chol ceathracha orm peann a chur le pár maidir le mo chuimhní cinn fúithi. Bhí saol fada ag Cáit Nic Gearailt a saolaíodh ar an mBaile Uachtarach Thoir , Baile an Fheirtéaraigh ar an 1ú Bealtaine 1925. Bhí beirt deirfiúracha agus seachtar deartháireacha aici. B'í an cailín ba shine í agus an ceathrú duine sa chlann. Bhí sí sé bliana d’aois sular thosnaigh sí ag dul ar scoil. Do shiúl na gcos a dheineadh sí an turas trí mhíle ar maidin agus arís tráthnóna agus mar a dúirt sí féin gan bróg ná stoca uirthi go minic. Nuair a bhí sí 14bl. d’aois chuaigh sí go Meánscoil na Toirbhirte sa Daingean ag fanúint lena gaolta ‘na Rohans’ i Sráid Eoin. Ansan chuaigh sí go Baile Átha Cliath ar feadh tréimhse gairid ag déanamh obair tí agus ag múineadh Gaolainne do leanaí an tí. Bhí an t-uaigneas i ndiaidh a muintire ró mhaith dhi agus bhí sí aige baile laistigh do bhliain. Chaith sí sé bhliain ansan ag obair i monarcha cniotála na Mná Rialta i mBaile an Fhirtéaraigh Thiar. D'fhan sí anseo go dtí gur deineadh cleamhnas di . Ar an 2ú lá Feabhra 1952 phós sí Seán Firtéar ón mBaile Uachtarach Thiar. Fr Tom a phós iad agus bhí ana lá acu ina dhiaidh sin ar an mBuailtín. Saolaíodh agus thógadar ceathrar mac Pádraig. Muiris, Piaras agus Jeaic agus ó shin bhí naonúr gar leanbh aici – ceathrar cailíní agus cúigear buachaillí chomh maith le sín garmhac Ruán . D’oibrigh Cáit agus Seán go dian dícheallach ar a ngabháltas. Bainne chomh maith le muca

Muire máthair Chríost Eilís máthair Eoin Baiste Triúr os cionn mo leapan chun mé a dh’aoireacht ó oíche go mhaidin idir sinn agus tromluí amen. Deirinn an phaidir seo go paiseanta gach oíche sula dtéinn a chodladh agus stop an siúl im chodladh!! Bhí ana bhéim aici ar a bheith in am, dá mbeifeá deánach ag teacht chuici bheadh agat. Cibé áit a théadh sí bheadh casóg uirthi i gcónaí. Uaithne ab ea a dath. Ghaibh Cáit trí go leor. Cailleadh a céile Seán i 1991 agus a mac Jeaic sa bhliain 2010. Tá gach duine dá clann imithe ar shlí na fírinne seachas a deirfiúr Peigí. Aisteach go leor ba ar an 31ú Márta a fuair a céile Seán, a mac Jeaic, a driotháir Tommy agus a máthar Bridge bás. Cé gur thit na báis seo go léir amach bhain Cáit súp as an saol leis. Seacht oíche na seachtaine bheadh fonn bóthair ar Cháit dá mbeadh rince, ceol nó biongó ar siúl. Bhíodh sí ag tnúth go mór le teacht an tSamhraidh agus le seisúin Ceoil na bhFrancach i dTigh Uí Mhurchú. Cloisim go mbíodh a suíochán féin sa chúinne aici ansiúd!! An port ab fhearr le Cáit ná Port Seite agus gan dabht ba bhreá leí na seiteanna agus an Old Time Waltz. Ba bhreá lena croí ‘Oileán Dhún an Óir’ agus ‘An Baile áta lámh leis siúd’. Bhíodh sí leis na Caipíní agus thaithníodh a cuairt bliantúil go Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh leí. Gan dabht staráil sí

sna Bibeanna leis. Bhí croí mór ag Cáit agus a céile Seán. Bhí an tigh oscailte i gcónaí agus ana spéis acu i ndul chun cinn a nianna agus a neachtanna. Domsa agus dom dheartháireacha agus deirfiúracha bhíodar ann dúinn nuair a cailleadh ár dtuismitheoirí go h-óg agus caithfead a rá ná raibh aon leisce riamh orm cuairt a thabhairt ar an mBaile Uachtarach. Aon uair a bhíos san ospidéal nó tinn bhíodh glaoch ó Cháit. Bhí Cáit cosúil le máthair dom chol ceathracha Eugene agus Billy a tháinig go hÉirinn ó Mheirceá i 1978. Bhí fáilte aici rompa i gcónaí agus is mó áit a chuaigh sí le Billy. Ba bhreá leí dul ag spaisteoireacht agus ag bothántaíocht , níor tháinig Cáit riamh folamh go dtí aon tigh, bhí málaí i gcónaí aici. Bhaineadh sí súp as a bheith ag dul timpeal le Billy nó le Tom Úilic Ó Móráin . Bean mór litreacha agus cártaí Nollag ab ea í. Bhaineadh sí an diabhal do shásamh as cuairteanna agus a bheith lena deirfiúr Peigí. Le blianta anuas bhí radharc na súl ag teip ar Cháit. Ach ambaiste nár stop san í ó dhul go dtí na ‘bingos’. Bhaineadh sí ana thaithneamh as an nDinnéar i nGáirdín Mhuire áit a bhuail sí le comharsain agus le cairde. Bhí ard aithne uirthi ar fuaid na dúichí go léir. Caithfimid treáslú lena mac Piaras agus a chéile Mary as an aire agus an chabhair agus an tacaíocht a thugadar di gan trácht ar an gcuid eile dá clann agus garchlann a bhí ann i gcónaí di. Iarradh orm buíochas a ghabháil leis na dochtúirí go háirithe an Dochtúir Margo Uí Shé, an Dr. Paul Morrison, lucht an Home Help agus na banaltraí a thug gach cabhair di le tamall anuas. Buíochas don Athair Eoghan Ó Cadhla S.P. a thugadh cuairt rialta uirthi agus do Antí an Ministéir Eocairisteach a thagadh chuichi go minic. While in Paris they enjoyed a visit to the Louvre, a boat ride on the Seine, a Street Art Walking Tour of the 13th arrondissement, a trip up the Eiffel Tower and lots more strolling and sightseeing. The group also had the opportunity to attend some classes at the lycee and to experience life with typical French families. The French students will come to Kerry in return at the end of April. Teachers Nora Flynn and Edel O' Connor would like to thank the parents for their support of the exchange and the students for their exemplary behaviour in Paris. Everyone is looking forward to more fun experiences in April. Photo shows the Meán Scoil students and teachers with one of the French teachers, Laurence Thevenon, in front of a piece of Parisien Street Art by Irishman, Conor Harrington.

Congratulations and good luck to Gráinne Keegan and Gorongosa Media, who have a base in Dingle Hub; two films produced by them are finalists for the World Wildlife Day 2020 Film Showcase at the United Nations in New York City on 3rd March - "Our Gorongosa - a Park for the People" and "On the Front Lines - The Rangers of Gorongosa". Gorongosa National Park (GNP) in Mozambique is perhaps Africa's greatest wildlife restoration story. In 2008, the Government of Mozambique and the Carr Foundation (Gorongosa Restoration Project), a US nonprofit organization, signed a 20-year Public-Private Partnership for the joint management of the Park. As part of the larger team, Gorongosa Media create short and long form films to raise awareness of the Park. We had a group from SHU at the beginning of January and a second group of students of 63 from SHU (Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, Connecticut) at present who will be with us until 8th May. Whether you want some quiet time alone to reflect, or want to enjoy the stunning Harry Clarke stained glass windows in the former nun’s chapel, or feel like a stroll through the gardens or having a cuppa in the top garden, the Díseart welcomes you always. From time to time, events that might be of interest to you are hosted there and we will endeavour to let you know about them so you can attend. Preparation for Lent and Mass will take place in the Díseart on Sunday 1 March from 2-5.30 p.m. Everyone is welcome. The Wild Geese GAA Club from Orange County, California who won the Junior Men's Cup at the recent Comórtas Peile Páidi Ó Sé West Kerry Live 31

Once Upon A Time In Hollywood At Comórtas It’s easy to understand the GAA’s growth in clubs abroad as it keeps the overseas Irish community connected to Ireland while away from family and friends as well as introducing it to those who have an interest in Irish culture. The Comórtas Peile Páidi Ó Sé has attracted over 16,500 participants over 31 years and it's fair share of overseas club teams including visiting teams from unlikely locations like Madrid, Dubai and even South Korea. Over last weekend's comórtas, OC Wild Geese from Orange County, California, based a short distance from Hollywood pulled off an unlikely victory in the Junior Men’s Cup, befitting of a movie war epic. The Kerry connection came in the form of Eoin Cruadhlaoich, a former An Ghaeltacht star, now working in Los Angeles in construction, who convinced his adopted GAA club that the trip to West Kerry would be worth it, and so it transpired. The team even created a special jersey with a black and white image of Páidi Ó Sé lifting Sam Maguire in 1985 emblazoned across the front for the occasion. Having seen off the challenge of Tipperary’s Killenaule (2-7 to 2-5), they faced West Kerry club Lispole in the Junior Men’s Final. Finding themselves in an unlikely lead at half time (2-4 to 1-4), the second half saw Lispole get back to within a point. The Californian men’s unlikely victory looked to be slipping away, and like all good movie storylines, the drama came on cue to add to their woes. Within a five-minute spell half way through the second half, OC Wild Geese missed a penalty and had two men blackcarded. But, down to 13 men for the last ten minutes of the game, the Orange County men, whose round trip to Ventry was a whopping 10,000 miles, held out to win by a point on a score line of 3-7 to 1-9. OC Wild Geese captain Eoin Ó Cruadhlaoich said, “There wont be a movie made in Hollywood for a week!! It’s a fantastic boost for this club to bring home silverware. It makes it all worth while and it will encourage more people to join our club as well as giving us more prominence among the US GAA club scene.” Dingle Impress It was a pretty good return for Kerry clubs across this six competition tournament with five men’s teams making it to finals.

it was an all-Kerry Dermot Early senior men’s Cup final with Dingle and An Ghaeltacht fighting it out for honours. Dingle beat Armagh’s Granemore and Kiskeam from North Cork in their path to the final with key scores coming from Conor & Mikey Geaney and Mikey Boland while An Ghaeltacht had victories over Westmeath side Mullingar Shamrocks and Louth’s Crosserlough. Over 200 attended the final on an uncharacteristically calm and pretty dry afternoon at Gallarus. Dingle opened up the scores with a point from Conor Geaney and two points from Mikey Geaney, both continuing their form from earlier while while Seamus Ó Muircheartaigh’s impressive inside marks for an Ghaeltacht resulting in scores kept them only one point behind by half time. With league and club championship season picking up a notch, both sides were going hard and a little incident early in the second half saw straight red cards going to Dingle’s Mathew Flaherty and An Ghaeltacht’s PJ Hand. Minutes later Dingle’s Daragh Sullivan was black-carded which left the door open for An Ghaeltacht to creep back into the game including a fine point from Eanna Ó Conchubhair to leave them just one behind, 0-6 to 0-7, with 15 minutes remaining. Then, that man Conor Geaney found himself through on goal and made no mistake to leave it 1-7 to 0-6 points. Dingle kept control despite being a man down for most of the final minutes and, with a final point from Billy O’Connor, it was Dingle who retained their crown to win by 1-8 to 0-8 points. Spoils For Listry Another all-Kerry final between Castlegregory, under the management of Ardfert’s Stephen Wallace, and Listry, with Marc Ó Sé in charge, ensured more silverware was staying in the Kingdom. Following a first round close encounter which ended in a two point victory over Cork’s Boherbui, division four side Castlegregory easily acquitted themselves against Louth’s Na Piarsaigh to reach the final. Division two club Listry had a first-round win over Cavan’s Knockbride before beating Louth’s Hunterstown Rovers. The final, played at Gallarus ‘Gort Nua’ new pitch a short distance from their traditional playing field. It was Castlegregory who started brightly with points from Brandon Hoare and Anton Kelliher and a goal from Jimmy Grady leaving them four points ahead at halftime (1-7 to 0-6).

However, Listry’s midfield pair Damien Clifford and Jimmy O’Leary stepped up and the midKerry side came back to level it half way through the second half. Castlegregory’s Alan Fitzgerald impressed and scored a free to go one point ahead but Damien Clifford popped up for a flurry of points and they kept their advantage to the end to leave the final score Listry 0-16 to Castlegregory’s 1-11 West Kerry Ladies Can Be Proud Corca Dhuibhne Ladies were representing Kerry in the intermediate cup. They started well beating Belturbet Rory O’Moore’s of Cavan with Ciara Long the stand-out player. The West Kerry ladies fell by the narrowest of margins in the semifinal to 2019 Laois intermediate county finalists Ballyroan by 5-3 to 4-5 who eventually won the overall competition, beating Cork’s Araglen Desmonds comprehensively (5-5 to 1-5) Mixed Results For Remaining Kerry Clubs The Junior Ladies Cup saw Daingean Úi Chúis Ladies, Annascaul/Castlegregory and Ballymac lining out here. The Dingle ladies had a right battle with Mayo’s Breaffy. Julie Lavelle goaled early on but Breaffy came firing back to lead 1-3 to 3-4 at half time. Despite two more goals by Dingle in the second half, one cracker from Ellie Sheehy, the lost to Breaffy, 6-9 to 4-8. In other rounds, Ballymac were up against Annascaul/Castlegregory and with Eimear O’Donoghue strong for the West Kerry side, they came out on top 2-6 to 0-5 points. Last year’s winners Ballyboden St. Enda’s B’s of DUblin then played Ballymac and beat them on a high scoreline of 6-12 to 0-2 points before yielding another convincing 3-14 to 4 points win against Annascaul/ Castlegregory. It ended with a Junior Ladies cup victory for the Dubs (5-7 to 1-6) over Mayo’s Breaffy. There were no Kerry teams competing in the senior ladies cup and the final, played in Gallarus before the men’s senior final, saw Ballyboden at Enda’s, two time previous winners and Leinster kingpins, losing to Clonguish of Longford in a shock result by a single point (5-7 to 5-80, with Clonguish’s Camille Burke shooting three goals in the second half to secure the Longford club’s victory.

Walnut and Blue Cheese Soda Bread Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Castlegregory GAA CASTLE SENIORS: Castle Seniors had an encouraging weekend of action taking part in Intermediate Men's competition at the Paidí Ó Sé Comórtas. Topping Group B on Saturday with wins, 2-08 to 2-06 over Cork side Boherbue, and 2-11 to 0-04 over Louth team, Na Piarsaigh, they then just came up short to Kerry side Listry in a very entertaining final, 1-12 to 0-16. A lot of positives to be taken going forward to the opening League match away to Lispole on March 8th, (2pm Throw in). MINORS: County League Division 2 match next Saturday, Feb.29th away to Firies (Farranfore grounds) now postponed due to players ongoing involvement in Munster Colleges Finals. UNDERAGE TRAINING: Training for underage panels continues with times as follows - U16s on Mondays 7-8pm, U12s & U14s training on Tuesday 7-8pm at Páirc An Caisleán. Minor training on Thursdays at 7pm.

It is always good to have a few bread recipes up your sleeve. A good soda bread is always a winner at any table. The combination of blue cheese, walnuts and honey works well and makes this a tasty bread. If you think you are not too keen on blue cheese, I recommend giving it another go. We are lucky to have so many good blue cheeses here in Ireland. You will find a range of blue cheeses from creamy and mild to sweet to strong. My favourite Irish blue cheeses are Crozier Sheep, Cashel Blue, Knockatee Blue, Ballyhooly Blue and Young Buck. This bread is perfect with lunch but especially with a delicious soup such as cauliflower soup. Ingredients 150g Irish blue cheese crumbled into small pieces 100g walnuts chopped 1tsp. honey 250g plain white flour 200g plain wholemeal flour, plus extra for dusting 1 tsp bread soda 1 tsp salt about 400ml buttermilk Method Preheat the oven to 200ºC.

SCHOOLS: No joy for Mean Scoil Castlegregory in their Munster Colleges final as despite a late second half rally they lost, in challenging conditions, to Beara Community School on a scoreline of 3-08 to 2-04. Conrgrats to our minor players Maurice O'Connell and Thomas O'Donnell who were part of the Tralee CBS panel who won the Corn Ui Mhuirí on Saturday last defeating St Brendans, Killarney. Gaelcolaiste's U19C Final having been a victim of the weather and it is re-fixed for Sat . 29th CASTLE LGFA: Underage training starts back for all our Girls panels (U2, U14 & U16) on Monday 24th Feb, 6-8pm at Pairc An Caisleán. Castle Ladies (minors and seniors) training on Sunday mornings. Castle/Annascaul had their first outing of 2020 in the Paidí Ó Sé Comórtas winning against Ballymac but losing out to eventual tournament winners Ballyboden St. Endas. Killorglin CYMS Players present Widows Paradise

Killorglin CYMS Players are currently in the final stages of rehearsal for their forthcoming production of Sam Cree’s hilarious comedy "Widows’ Paradise". This hilarious comedy is not to be missed, featuring an all-star local cast. The show will be staged at the CYMS Community Hall Killorglin Wed 25th, Thurs 26th, Fri 27th March, Wed 1st, Thurs 2nd, Fri 3rd April 2020 (Opening Night Special Offer 11th April Seats Only €8) Contact the ticket office 0669762053. Adm: €13 Curtain: 8pm Sharp (Doors Open 7pm) (Unreserved Seating) Set in the 1960's the action of the play takes place in a "luxury" caravan with 5 ladies embarking on a "strictly women only" holiday, set beautifully in the countryside. Ruby (played by Bridget Cahillane) is a strong-willed widow with a decided distaste for all men, and is adamant to make the other 4 ladies follow her lead and write-off the opposite sex for a life of peace and tranquility. Her three musketeers follow somewhat bewildered with the quest - Lucy (played by Edel Moriarty) is a ditzy loveable character who must hide her never-ending faith in finding true love. Vanessa, another widow (played by Martha Fleming) is comically only interested in the finer things in life type full of her own importance. Then we have Rachel, (played by Gina O’Shea) a relationship lightweight, is a person full of frustrations and who has an overall fear of men make her one of the most entertaining characters thrown into the female mix. These 4 self-confessed "Widows" are followed by Ruby’s daughter Sylvia (played by Sarah Pigott) who has been taken along on the trip to learn from their mistakes..... A subsequent case of "mistaken caravan identity" sees the "Widows Paradise" thrown into disarray with the arrival of no nonsense alpha-male Harry (played by Donal Pigott), his dim-witted side-kick Ernie (played by Brian O’Sullivan) and Harrys son Alan (played by Vivian O’Callaghan). Add to the mix a couple of surprise visitors in the form of Wilfred (played by James Riordan) and Farmer John (played by Colm Clifford) and there’s a basis for chaos. What was supposed to be a scene of peace and tranquility turns into a riotous clash of the sexes, each with their own story to tell! The play is directed by Brendan Reidy and Mary Gallagher For more information follow us on our Facebook and Instagram ‘Killorglin CYMS Players’.

Idir Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh, Comórtas Caide Pháidí Uí Shé agus mórán eile nach iad, is léir nach bhfuil Lá Fhéile Pádraig ach tamall beag uainn anois. Níl aon dabht ach go mbeidh Seachtain na Gaelainne ag tosnú leis mórthimpeall na tíre agus iarracht bhreise náisiúnta á deineamh an Ghaelainn a neartú. Níl aon am níos fearr bheith ag cuimhneamh ar cúrsaí pleanála teangan agus conas teanga dúcháis na tíre seo a chosaint, a chaomhnú agus a chur chun cinn mar phobal Chiarraí Thiar. Seo agaibh nuacht agus eolas ar Thobar Dhuibhne na coicíse seo! Cad ba mhaith le "Tobar Dhuibhne" a dhéanamh? What would Tobar Dhuibhne like to do? •

Ba bhreá le Tobar Dhuibhne uimhir na ndaoine a bhíonn ag labhairt na Gaelainne go laethúil i gCorca Dhuibhne a ardach.

Tobar Dhuibhne would love to raise the figure of the amount people who speak Irish daily in Corca Dhuibhne.

Cúpla figiúir garbh de réir Daonáireamh / Census 2016...

Isteach. *Inhale* Amach. *Exhale* Isteach. Amach. Táim anseo. Nocht. (Beo) Bocht. "Lámh in airde más tusa an duine san nach dtarraingíonn anáil. Éinne?" Tá píosaí cruitheacha á bhfoilsiú anseo as Gaelainn nó go dhátheangach. Má chuireann tú dán nó splanc-scríbhneoireacht (200 focal an srian) chugainn, tabhfar dearbhán One4All don té foilsithe! Sprioclá ná Luan sula dtagann an West Kerry Live amach.

Mar sin, tá timpeall 2,000 i gCiarraí Thiar le Gaelainn nach labhrann rómhinic é - bua éasca a bheadh ann na daoine san a chur ag caint as Gaelainn gach lá. Therefore, there are around 2,000 people in West Kerry with Irish but don't speak it too often - 'twould be excellent for the Gaeltacht to encourage these people to speak a bit of Irish every day. Éasca péasca! Easy peasy! Go mbeidh rath ar an bPlean, ní mór dúinn timpeall 300 duine breise a chur ag caint na Gaelainne ar bonn laethúil. Mairfidh an Plean go dtí 2025, le cúnamh Dé, mar sin tá cúpla bliain (agus fuíollach ama!) fágtha againn tionchar a imirt air seo. In order for the Plan to be a success, we need to try to attract around 300 extra people to speak Irish on a daily basis. This is a 7 year plan, and Tobar DHuibhne have just one year put down, so we have plenty time yet. Bí linn agus cabhraigh linn é seo a bhaint amach!

Even though Gaelainn is thought to be at least a millenium older than the English language, research tells us that the first book to be printed in Irish (besides manuscripts) was actually commissioned in 1577 by Queen Elizabeth I. The book was an Irish language primer written in Irish, in Latin and in English for use by the English to understand and eventually subjugate the Irish people at the time

School Transport Scheme Question My daughter is starting secondary school in September and we live 5 kilometres from her school. Am I eligible for the School Transport Scheme? Answer You may qualify for the School Transport Scheme. The scheme provides subsidised school transport for both post-primary and primary pupils. Bus Éireann runs the school bus service and the Department of Education and Skills decides the annual fares. The service is only provided where there are at least 10 eligible pupils in a distinct locality that can be economically serviced by a bus route. Even when a pupil meets the age and distance criteria for school transport, there is no legal entitlement to it. Your daughter is eligible for the Post-Primary School Transport Scheme if she is attending her nearest school and lives 4.8 kilometres or more from the school. The Department and Bus Éireann determine the appropriate nearest school with regard to ethos and language. Parents must arrange to bring their child to the nearest pick-up point on the bus route. Generally, bus routes are organised so that no pupil has more than 3.2 kilometres to travel to a pick-up point. There is a single annual charge of €350 per pupil. However a family does not pay more than €650 per year. The charge is due to be paid in full by the end of July or else in 2 instalments: by the end of July and the start of December. Pupils who are eligible for school transport and who hold a valid medical card are entitled to free school transport to the nearest school. Since your child is enrolling in post-primary school for the first time, you should either apply for school transport online or download the form from Bus Éireann's website, buseireann. ie. Applications are now being accepted for the 2020-2021 school year. You should apply by Friday, 24 April 2020. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre
