CEANN SIBÉAL & AN BAILE UACHTARACH EACHTRAÍ STAIRE & LOGAINMNEACHA BREANDÁN Ó CÍOBHÁIN 8.00 p.m. Déardaoin, 27 Márta 2020, Dún Chíomháin, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh Ceann tíre maordha bagarthach is ea Ceann Sibéal a bhaineann stathadh as na mílte duine a thagann aneas thar Chasadh na Gráige ar an an mórchuaird Duibhneach. Níor leagadh aon ainm air sna mapaí seanda ach tá aithne ag an saol mór air, agus é breacaithe ar mhapa na Suirbhéireachta Ordanáis le beagnach dhá chéad bliain, mar Cheann Sibéal. Cérbh í Sibéal? – sin ceist a phléifear. Tógadh Tower an Bhaile Uachtaraigh, mar stáisiún rabhaidh, ‘signal station’ anso sa bhliain 1804, nuair a bhí ionradh ar Éirinn á bhagairt ag Napoleon. Tá sé ar cheann den 83 a tógadh fan an chósta ó B.Á.C. deiseal timpeall go Ceann Mhálanna Inis Eoghain. Tamall ina dhiaidh san, nuair a bhí an bhagairt san thart, deineadh stáisiún Garda Cósta do, agus tógadh tithe na nGardaí ar an mBaile Uachtarach. Bhí fear den sloinne Disset ina measc, agus d’fhág a shliocht rian nach beag ar an ndúthaigh. Breis is céad bliain sar ar deineadh an scannán ‘Star Wars’ ar an láthair scrígh sé leabhrán dar teideal ‘On Interstellar Light’. Bígí farainn ar an 26ú Márta chun éachtaint a fháil ar an scéal ar fad, ach tugaigí fé ndeara gur uair a choig níos déanaí a bheidh an léacht an mhí seo (8 a chlog) agus gur i nDún Chíomháin a bheidh sé ar siúl. Coronavirus (COVID-19) Protect Yourself And Others To protect yourself and others from coronavirus (COVID-19) it’s important to think about how the virus is spread. Coronavirus is spread in sneeze or cough droplets. To infect someone, the virus has to get from an infected person's nose or mouth into another person's eyes, nose or mouth. This can be direct or indirect (on hands, objects, surfaces). Keeping this in mind will help you to remember all the things you need to do to protect yourself and others from the virus. Follow this advice as strictly as possible and encourage others to follow this advice too.

DO •

Wash your hands properly and often*

* - How to wash your hands with soap and water

1. Wet your hands with warm water and apply soap.

2. Rub your hands together until the soap forms a lather.

3. Rub the top of your hands, between your fingers and under your fingernails.

4. Do this for about 15 seconds.

5. Rinse your hands under running water.

6. Dry your hands with a clean towel or paper towel.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve when you cough and sneeze.

Put used tissues into a bin and wash your hands.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.

Avoid close contact with people who are not well.

Follow the travel advice from the Department of Foreign Affairs

Stay at home if you are sick to help stop the spread of whatever infection you may have.

DON'T •

Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.

Do not share objects that touch your mouth – for example, bottles, cups.

You Should Wash Your Hands: •

after coughing or sneezing

before and after eating

before and after preparing food

if you are in contact with a sick person, especially those with fever or respiratory symptoms (cough, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing)

after being on public transport or in a crowd (especially an indoor crowd)

if you have handled animals or animal waste

before having a cigarette or vaping

if your hands are dirty

after toilet use

Keep your hands in good condition, moisturise them often. Any basic product that is not perfumed or coloured is OK. Do not wear gloves instead of washing your hands. The virus gets on them in the same way it gets on your hands. Also, your hands can get contaminated when you take them off. - Advice from the HSE West Kerry Live 3

Cost Saving Applying for aEnergy loanTips at home

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Q: I’m hoping to carry out some home improvements in the coming months and I wanted to apply for a Home Improvements Loan to cover the costs. What advice can you give me on applying for a loan and what should I bring with me when submitting my application?

Flexibility is extremely important when choosing a financial provider and the more flexibility built into your loan, the better, in case your circumstances change. Choose a loan provider who will give you the flexibility to alter your repayment options without a penalty, whether it is to extend your repayments over a longer period, if, for example you are made redundant or become ill, or to pay off your loan early without a fee or to increase the amount you repay each week or month and thus reduce the length of the term of the loan.

Once you have done your research, and have established your own repayment capacity, and have decided which financial provider suits your needs the best, you can then apply for your loan. Most financial institutions have the facility to apply for a loan online but some people may prefer to call in and talk to someone first about their options. From our point of view here in the Credit Union, we are always available to talk and to give advice to you about your borrowing needs, or you can go the online route and send in your application through our website or our App. If you do choose to take out a loan with us, the process is a lot simpler and quicker than you may have thought. Firstly, you need to be a member, but joining is easy! When applying for your loan you will need to provide us with your 3 most recent payslips or if you are self-employed recent accounts / returns (or Social Welfare receipts), 3 months Bank Statements, and a copy of a recent Credit Card Statement. Depending on the application, additional information may be required. And that’s it! Hopefully you will have our decision on your application within a few days, and we approve 97% of loan applications. So, there’s nothing to stop you carrying out your home improvement dreams, as long as you are able to repay what you borrow. Be sensible and only borrow what you need and what you can afford to repay!

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine announced an amendment to the Fallen Animal Scheme for Fallen Farm Stock. The objective of the revised scheme is to provide support for the collection and disposal of fallen bovines under 48 months (not subject to TSE testing), sheep and goats in accordance with EU Animal By-products (ABP) legislation. The importance of the animal collection service is well recognised by the Department, as it provides an essential commercial service to the farming community and wider public. The Department acknowledges the challenges facing the sector and has engaged intensively with all stakeholders including the Animal Collector Association and farming representative groups. The Department is confident that the amended Scheme will support the sustainability and viability of the service with the aim of ensuring a continued fallen animal collection service to the farming community. The Scheme is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine in line with EU State Aid legislation. The farmer will continue to pay a fee to the Animal Collector in respect of the collection service provided, however the Department has set maximum amounts that can be charged. Participation by Animal Collectors in the amended Fallen Animal Schemes for Fallen Farm Stock is voluntary. This amended scheme supports the collection and disposal of fallen bovines under 48 months (not subject to TSE testing), sheep and goats. Further details on the scheme are available on: www.agriculture.gov.ie/ animalhealthwelfare/fallenanimals/ SHEEP HOUSING: ARE YOUR FACILITIES GOOD ENOUGH? Over the next few weeks, farmers will be looking to house their ewes for the winter period until they lamb down next spring. For some, early-lambing flocks may already be housed in time for lambing in January. However, the majority of sheep farmers will only be thinking of housing their ewes now. Therefore, in order to make life easy come lambing time and to maximise the performance of the flock, it is important that your housing facilities are ready. A few important factors to ensure, when housing ewes, are: •

To provide adequate floor and feed space;

To allow access to clean water;

To keep pens clean and dry;

To ensure adequate ventilation.

It is important to provide ewes with plenty of space in order to prevent overcrowding, which can result in reduced performance. If floor space is tight it is important to have good airflow circulating throughout the shed to prevent ewes from becoming too warm and stressed. Furthermore, when ewes are ready to be scanned in early December, they should be grouped in accordance with how many lambs they are carrying. Singlebearing ewes; twin-bearing ewes; and triplet-bearing ewes should be penned separately. It is also important to provide ewes with adequate feed space throughout the housing period. An option for farmers if their sheds are at full capacity 8 West Kerry Live

is to have a walk-through feeding passageway at either side of the pen. This allows farmers to feed their ewes from three sides of the pen. The recommended feed space when offering concentrates to a ewe weighing between 70kg and 90kg is between 500mm and 6,000mm. Smaller ewes weighing 50kg require a feed space of 400mm when being fed concentrates. Moreover, ewes should have access to fresh clean water at all times. Ventilation is vital. As with all animal housing, adequate ventilation will help keep fresh air in the shed and remove any airborne pathogens and any other harmful bacteria. In a well-ventilated animal house, the heat produced by the livestock rises and exits via the roof outlet. This is then displaced by fresh air coming in from the sides of the building. Now is the time to fix any areas in the shed where ventilation may be compromised, not when the ewes are in the shed. The most common type of ventilation found in sheep housing facilities is Yorkshire boarding. The boarding should be installed to a minimum depth of 1.5m below the eves along the full length of the shed. The gaps between the pressure-treated laths should be between 25mm and 50mm. Laths should be 25mm thick with a maximum width of 75mm. Hygiene is essential. Throughout the housing period, it is important to keep bedding clean and dry to decrease the risk of any animal health problems. Therefore, making sure you have an adequate supply of straw for the housing period is critical – especially around lambing time – to ensure pens are kept clean. A common animal health problem associated with dirty bedding is lameness, which can spread quickly throughout the shed. If the bedding is extremely dirty, it may need to be removed from the shed. In this case, lime should be spread around the pen to kill any infections that may be present. At lambing time, individual pens should be disinfected after every ewe and her offspring are removed. Lime and fresh straw should be applied. One should consider Individual pens. It might be at the back of most farmers’ minds, but setting up individual pens now will save time come next spring. The best place to locate individual pens is near the entrance of the building. This will make it easy to turn the ewe and her lambs out of the shed. One individual pen should be allocated between six ewes over the lambing period. The dimensions of an individual pen should be 1.5m long and 1.5m wide. COVID-19 -FARMERS CAN AVAIL OF ILLNESS BENEFIT Self-employed workers – including farmers – will be entitled to receive either illness benefit or non-means tested supplementary welfare allowance under a new package of reforms agreed by Government as part of its response to the outbreak of the coronavirus (Covid-19). Under the package, farmers can avail of either an increased illness benefit of €305/week if hit with the coronavirus, or a supplementary welfare allowance. Following a meeting of the special Cabinet Committee on Covid-19 yesterday, Monday, March 10, the Government has decided on the next phase of Ireland’s response to the issue. In addition to the health measures agreed, the Government noted that a package of reforms was agreed for sick pay, illness benefit and supplementary benefit that is designed to ensure that employees and the self-employed can abide by medical advice to self-isolate where appropriate. The key elements of the income support measure include: • Waiving the requirement for six waiting days for sick pay in respect of medically certified cases of self-isolation in accordance with public health guidelines; • The removal of the means test requirement for Supplementary Welfare Allowance in respect of medically certified cases of self-isolation; • To contain the transmission of Covid-19, the personal rate of Illness Benefit will be increased from €203/week to €305/week for a maximum period of two weeks of medically certified self-isolation, or for the duration of a person’s medically-certified absence from work due to Covid-19 diagnoses; • Self-employed people will be entitled to receive either illness benefit or non-means tested supplementary welfare allowance. Under the supplementary welfare allowance, the maximum personal rate

of allowance stands at €201/week for those aged 25 and over, or aged 18-24 and living independently. Those aged 18-24 and not living independently are eligible for €112.70/week. A Cultural and Community Hub, with dedicated spaces and programming for the arts

Le thart ar 30 bliain anuas, tá muintir Chorca Dhuibhne tar éis díriú ar ionad chultúrtha, ealaíon agus pobail a fhorbairt sa Daingean. Tuigeann Údarás na Gaeltachta agus Comhairle Chontae Chiarraí go bhfuil gá agus tábhacht lena leithéid d’áis agus go rachadh sé chun leasa an phobal i gcoitinne. Stock Up for the Lock Down! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

The threat of a lockdown is on the cards as Covid-19 or (novel) Coronavirus wreaks havoc across the globe. With increasing confirmed cases being reported in Ireland on a daily basis, the outlook is quite grim. Reports from our Health Service Executive (HSE), World Health Organization (WHO) and the scientific community acknowledge that we are still in early stages of understanding this new virus fully, but all agree that its modus operandi is similar to that of other Coronaviruses, which are responsible for most common colds. You would have to have your head in the sand if you have not learned about the importance of good hygiene, hand washing and cough/sneeze etiquette and self-isolation but in the midst of panic and stock-piling toilet paper, some practical nutritional measures may easily be overlooked. In the event of a lockdown, forcing people to stay at home, it is a good time to prepare your shopping list and stock up on the good stuff now! Let’s look at some ingredients to minimize the risk of becoming very ill with this virus, especially for those who are elderly, those who are immuno-compromised or have underlying respiratory vulnerabilities? While we do not have the benefit of scientific studies about nutrition in relation to this specific Covid-19 yet, we do have a wealth of information about strengthening the immune system, supporting the barrier defenses (respiratory and gut linings) and nourishment for convalescing. With this in mind, here are some ideas of what to include in your lockdown grocery list! Vitamin C foods are top of the list and luckily for us they are plentiful, store well and easy to consume. Source the best quality oranges, mandarins, lemons and kiwis available. Their tough skin protects the vitamin C content inside during transit so make sure there are no bruises or breaks in the skin. Vitamin C has several roles in the human body, one of which is supporting immune function. It is involved in building and maintaining connective tissue and fatty membranes, which forms our barrier defenses of the respiratory and digestive tract. Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, protecting us from cell damage, builds collagen and mobilizes defensive immune cells to sites of injury and infection. We do not make vitamin C or store it and being a water-soluble vitamin, it dissolves quickly once ingested, with any excess excreted through urine. As such, it is best to consume vitamin C foods in smaller quantities throughout the day rather than having a load in one go. The same can be said for supplement vitamin C – little and often for continued supply. Stock up on bones from a good butcher to make broth. This age-old remedy for colds and flu has lasted throughout the ages and no doubt will be seen to be effective in this crisis too. Broth warms the throat and sinus passages, killing off viruses and reducing their impact. Full of immune-boosting minerals, zinc, glycine and collagen – broth is nutritious, comforting and easy to digest, making it an ideal tonic for the elderly and sick, who may already have diminished appetites. Like the broth, warm drinks are vital during a respiratory, viral infection – you can add more power to your tea by steeping a cinnamon quill, cloves, turmeric and fresh ginger in the teapot for at least 5 mins, making a chaitype tea from your usual black tea. Skip the milk as it can be mucus-forming for some and keep this tea on the go to stay hydrated and protected. Check your spice rack and make sure you have a fresh supply of these spices, not forgetting fresh ginger root, which can be kept in the fridge. Fortunately, onions and garlic store well and can be added to everything from soups, broths, stews and roasts. The key to using these ingredients for an anti-viral impact is to load up, do not hold back – add them in abundance to your lunchtime and evening meals. Studies have indicated that garlic is more effective as an antimicrobial in its raw state, rather than cooked – add some freshly chopped or minced garlic to your dishes when serving, as well as adding it in the cooking. With everyone in the house 12 West Kerry Live

on lockdown – no one will complain of your garlic breath! Food staples such as oats, rice, pasta, dried pulses and potatoes keep well too and provide sustenance and calories for recovery. Add in plenty of carrots and sweet potatoes to the stockpile as they can be stored for weeks and are full of betacarotene, necessary for the respiratory linings. There’s a bit of a rush on canned foods right now but beware that much of them are high in salt (dehydrating) and low on nutrition. However, do get a few cans of organic tomatoes, beans and chickpeas for quick add-on to meals as these retain most of their nutrition, are easy to use and are non-perishable. I have written two articles recently “Kung Flu Fighting” in December 2019, issue 271 and “A Better Way to get Better” in January 2020, issue 275, both of which have loads of tips for choosing and preparing foods during illness and recovery. They are now available to read in the blog page our website. While these articles are not specific to Covid-19, the content is relevant and may help you and the people you are caring for to be nourished and resilient during this crisis. Covid-19 update:Heading into this unknown crisis, it has never been so critical for us all to work together in the traditions of true Meitheal to support our families, friends, neighbours, colleagues, businesses and communities. It is so important that we all, personally and in our businesses, follow the guidelines as set out by the HSE to help in containing the Coronavirus (Covid-19) https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/ coronavirus/coronavirus.html . The cancellations of the St. Patrick's Day Parades for the Dingle Peninsula and Ireland are understandable and supported by all. However, it is essential too, that we support our local businesses to stay open and maintain jobs locally. Please shop local, buy local food produce, gifts and crafts, and support our local tourism businesses as we face our biggest challenge yet.

Tá sé tabhachtach go leanfaimis ar fad treoirlínte Fheidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte go pearsanta agus inár ngnóanna, agus gach iarracht a dhéanamh gan an víreas a leathadh níos mó. Cromane GAA beefs up fundraising efforts with St Patrick’s Day Cow Splat Bingo Cromane GAA club is pushing its fundraising poo-tential to the limit with a St Patrick’s Day Cow Splat Bingo. The home club of Kerry All-Ireland winners Donnchadh Walsh and Sean O’Sullivan has undertaken a greener than green initiative on our national holiday that involves a cow, nature, and bingo. Starting at 2pm, a bovine beauty will roam the Cromane pitch within a number of pre-laid squares: a giant bingo card. Wherever nature calls in the ‘manure matrix’ the winning square will scoop €500 courtesy of the poop. Eight surrounding squares (collateral damage) will win €50. Tickets are €10 each and are on sale now at www.cromanegaa.com/tickets– this is your chance to win some moo-lah. Cromane GAA club chairman Stephen Casey explains the idea behind the cow splat bingo: “We have been looking for a fundraising idea for a while now. Our facilities need to be upgraded. We built our existing dressing rooms in the early 1990s and they have served us well but it is time to look at improving our facilities as a whole. This idea is great: it should get the community engaged and there’s a touch of humour involved. It’s also something for people to do after the St Patrick’s Day parades. We are hoping everyone one pops down to the Cromane GAA club on the day to enjoy everything that we are offering. While we wait for mother nature to take its course, we have a delicious BBQ planned - sponsored by O’Sullivan’s Bakery and Eamon Sheahan Butchers - our club shop will be selling treats as well as delicious coffee, crepes and hot chocolate from The Boathouse Cafe, Cromane.” The Cow Splat Bingo draw will take place on Monday, March 16, where ticket holders will be randomly allocated a Cow Splat Square number ahead of the St Patrick’s Day event. There will be live music, musical squares, conclusion of the ‘Name The Cow’ competition and the announcement of the children’s ‘Colour Our Cow’ winning entry. Cromane GAA have a heap of fantastic prizes up for 14 West Kerry Live

grabs including Kerry football jersey, O'Neill's footballs, gift vouchers and other novelty prizes. Tickets again are available online at www.cromanegaa.com/tickets as well as at local store Hannah Mary’s Country Store; Jack’s Coastguard Restaurant; Clifford’s Bar, Killorglin, and Grady’s Bar, Killorglin. Tickets can also be obtained from club officials. Club chairperson Stephen Casey added: “We are grateful to all our sponsors and everything raised on the day will go towards much-needed improvements to our playing facilities. We are looking forward to a great day of entertainment so make sure you get your ticket today to be in with a chance to win.”

Mystery Blasket Corpse

The smack was blown out of the harbour’s mouth and across Dingle bay towards Kells where her anchor took ground when near the shore and kept her fast until she was rescued. The old hulk, which had no crew on board, was driven on the rocks on the east side of the harbour and became a total wreck.

From – Limerick Chronicle, 27 October 1831

Loss Of The Union

The rumour that the body of a female was washed ashore on one of the Blasket islands is true. The body of an elegantly dressed lady was discovered on Thursday last, attired in silk, with a gold chain and other valuable trinkets attached to her person.

From – Caledonian Mercury, 2 February 1793

The most singular appendages were two pointers fastened each to one hand of the ill- fated lady. A part of the wreck of a vessel was perceived on the opposite side. The corpse was interred on the spot, by the water guards [coast guards] of the station.

Prisoners From America

Dingle Coopers On Strike

From – Dublin Evening Post, 29 December 1781

From – Cork Examiner, 23 May 1862

A cartel ship with prisoners from America put into Dingle Bay last Wednesday. She is bound to Portsmouth from New York. [This was during the American Revolutionary War with Great Britain 1775 – 1783. French forces also fought on the side of the Americans and these prisoners may have been French].

On Monday last, the journeymen coopers of this town turned out in a body, for the purpose of raising the price for making firkins, from three to four pence. One lad of the same class, named Kavanagh, took no part in the proceedings of his fellow tradesmen. It appears he was well pleased with what he was already receiving for making firkins and he remained working at his trade. However, the others in a threatening manner repaired to the workshop where he was employed and the poor fellow had to decamp. [Firkin – a wooden tub containing 56 pounds or 25+kgs of butter or cheese].

Cotton Bales From Wreck From – Lloyd’s List, 20 May1834 Yesterday a great quantity of cotton bales were seen floating between the Blaskets and Sybil Head and 45 bales have been picked up – some are partially burnt. Fragments of a wreck have been washed on shore, most of which are partially burnt.

The following are the particulars of the disasters which occurred last night on the Kerry coast:- It appears that Mr. Wilson, fish merchant at Manchester, has lately established his fishery station at Ventry Harbour, for the rendezvous chiefly of Manx vessels, some steam launches and three Dingle boats. Every morning the fleet collects at the station, when the fish is transferred to one of the steamers in attendance, which plies daily (weather permitting) either to Fenit or to Milford [Milford Haven, Wales]. For the last three days and nights the weather has been very stormy on this coast, particularly last night when it blew a very strong gale from the north-west. Among the fleet which lay at anchor in Ventry Harbour was an old hulk which, in the height of the gale, drew her anchor and began to drift fast on the lee shore. In doing so she collided with a fine fishing smack called the Willie Jones, of Peel, Isle of Man, which at once parted from her moorings and began to drift fast before the wind. The smack’s crew managed to jump on board an ice vessel which lay at

We are sure that this will be a wonderful night of fun, entertainment and laughter in the luxurious surroundings of Ballygarry House Hotel. ATHLETICS: Comhghairdeas mór to Jim O’ Shea, from our neighbouring club Listry who competed in the British Masters in Lee Valley Stadium, in London at the weekend. He came 1st in the Men’s 75 long Jump (3.80 m) and 1st in the High Jump ((1.20m). What a fantastic achievement Jim! And I thought I did well jumping out of bed! KERRY SENIOR LADIES: LIDL NATIONAL LEAGUE On a cold and windy Sunday morning, Kerry senior ladies made it five out of five with a brilliant win–this time over Monaghan. It was a very exciting game from start to finish with some fantastic football played by both teams. Kerry at one stage had an 8 point advantage but the Northern girls came back to go 2 points up. However, Kerry dug deep and against a strong wind sealed a four point victory. Well done to the managers Darragh Long and Declan Quill and to Ciara Murphy and Caoimhe Evans from our own club who are part of the panel. COUNTY MINOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Milltown/ Castlemaine 3-08 Annascaul/Lispole/Dingle 0-04 Well done to our Minor team and management along with the supporters who journeyed back west on Saturday evening last and played in very testing conditions to take home the two points associated with victory. CREDIT UNION COUNTY SENIOR FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 5 BALLYDUFF 2 – 8 CROMANE 1 – 11 This first round encounter played on a heavy pitch in Ballyduff turned out to be a very entertaining affair despite the recent terrible weather conditions. The visitors started well and fired over two early points but Ballyduff hit back and took the lead after ten minutes. However Cromane took control and fired over five unanswered with Darren Houlihan leading the line from centre forward. Points were swapped at either before the break and Cromane led 0 - 8 to 0 – 4. The third quarter saw Ballyduff reduce the margin to three points before the outstanding Kevin Goulding's goal levelled matters with twelve minutes remaining. It was all Ballyduff at this stage but they could not convert the chances they created and with three minutes left on the clock Cromane were awarded a penalty that was fired home by Houlihan. Ballyduff were not giving up easily and a fine move was finished to the net by Eoin Ross to tie matters on the hour mark. Substitute Mikey Boyle had a chance of the winner but his shot drifted wide and both sides finished with a League point each. Ballyduff lined out without Kerry hurlers Pádraig and Mikey Boyle but they joined the game in the second half. Cromane's midfielder Niall Dennehy fired over the first point after two minutes and this was followed by a similar effort from Darren Houlihan. Kevin Goulding opened the home side's account with a point after gaining a fine mark. The Ballyduff midfielders combined well 18 West Kerry Live

before Eoin Ross split the posts to level matters. Seán O'Sullivan was off target from a free while at the other end Goulding pointed Ballyduff ahead following good play by JP O'Carroll. The tide turned in Cromane's favour and in a 15 minute spell had five points on the board without reply. Four came from the very impressive centre forward Darren Houlihan and the other from full forward Mikey Houlihan. Goulding stopped the rot when he called another fine mark in the 25th minute to reduce the margin to three. However Mikey Houlihan pointed just before the break to send his side in four points to the good.

Kerry of Asdee/Ballylongford/Ballydonoghue/ Clounmacon.

Andrew Murphy opened the second half scoring with a fine point from play but former Kerry star Sean O'Sullivan did likewise at the other end. Kevin Goulding pointed two frees to reduce the margin but in the 10th minute O'Sullivan fired over a disputed point to leave three between the sides once more. Goulding and Houlihan swapped pointed frees and with a quarter of the game remaining the visitors had the advantage. The Boyle brothers had entered the play at this stage and a fine pass from Mikey found it's way to Goulding who rattled the net for the equaliser. Ballyduff upped the ante at this stage but they could not dig out the scores to put the game beyond Cromane. On a rare breakaway Mikey Houlihan was upended and Darren made no mistake from the resultant penalty. This looked to have wrapped up the game for the visitors but there was one more sweeping move from Ballyduff and Eoin Ross levelled matters at the death with a well worked goal. Ballyduff had a chance to win it in extra time but at the end of the day no side deserved to lose.

However at time of compiling these notes the traditional dawn band march starting at 6a.m. from Ashmount Terrace has not been cancelled and as it is an outdoor gathering it possibly will go ahead. Perhaps the pubs, restaurants and food outlets would consider offering special menus or discounts to attract the local trade which normally fills their premises after the parade each year???. Kerry Short Film Bursary 2020 Now Open For Submissions

KWD Kids Recycling Following on from the success of the “KWD Kids Recycling” programme in 2010, and “Recycle Right” initiative in 2017/2018, KWD's Recycling Right representative Shauna Murphy has been out visiting schools throughout Kerry again, educating and encouraging students to recycle correctly. The goal is to further educate young people on the importance of recycling and enable students and teachers to understand the role of recycling and how to dispose of their waste and recycling correctly and responsibly. This will enable students to champion best practice when it comes to recycling so they can transfer this knowledge to their homes and influence greater recycling within their schools.

The Kerry Short Film Bursary for 2020 is now open for submissions! A fund of €10,000 is available to the successful applicant towards the cost of their production. The Bursary is funded through Kerry County Council with support from the Arts Council and is intended to foster talent, creativity and activity in filmmaking within the county. This is a competitive award and applicants are advised to attend an Information Day on Thurs Mar 26th (11am - 5pm) in the Anam Centre in Killarney. This day will provide information on how best to complete your application form, including advice on script development. Pre-register with filmkerry@kerryetb.ie by Thurs Mar 19th to confirm your spot!

Once again, the reaction from the students and teachers has been very positive and KWD Recycling are confident that all involved will now have the knowledge to dispose of their waste and recycling correctly. All of this information is available on the interactive website where you can view videos on how we recycle your waste. For more information please see the website www.kwdkids.com Shauna has visited over 24 schools throughout the county in the last number of weeks. If your school is interested in a visit from KWD Recycling, please contact Shauna by email info@kwd.ie

Kerry ETB Film Development Officer, Siobhan O’Sullivan outlined “the importance of funds such as this to develop the industry within the county” while Kerry County Council Arts Officer, Kate Kennelly, described these funds as “an important way to encourage & support filmmaking talent”. Applicants should have some experience in filmmaking and be able to prove that a director and/or a producer has seen the script and has a sense of its suitability to go into production. “Film in Kerry is growing industry. This bursary, funded by Kerry County Council and the Arts Council, helps to support filmmakers whilst promoting Kerry as a location for film’, stated Moira Murrell, CE at Kerry County Council. Guidelines & application forms can be accessed online at http://www. kerrycoco.ie/home3/kerry-film-bursary/ Applicants must shoot on location in Kerry but do not have to be from Kerry to apply. The Kerry Film Office, which is based in Kerry ETB Tralee, will offer location support and guidance as requested, especially in relation to accessing locations and local resources. There is a two-stage selection process in the open competition. Stage one involves a shortlisting from applications received, while stage two requires an interview in Kerry. The closing date for receipt of applications is set at 5pm on Friday 10th April.

Small Changes: Home Energy Saving

Avoiding power showers and reducing the length of your showers, fitting water efficient shower heads and adjusting the temperature of your boiler/immersion to around 65 degrees are all top tips to tackle excess energy use for hot water. Vampire Power Vampire power (a more theatrical term for standby power or leaking electricity) is the electrical power used by an appliance or device while it is turned off or in standby mode. Power is required to maintain the constant digital or LED display on appliances such as ovens and microwaves or for devices that can be controlled with a remote such as TVs (a device in standby mode can draw between 10% and 30% of the electricity it would if fully operational).

The best motto to think about is not waste things. Don’t waste electricity, don’t waste paper, don’t waste food. Live the way you want to live but just don’t waste- David Attenborough Outside of the transport sector our homes are the largest users of energy in Ireland. The residential sector accounts for almost a quarter of the energy used in the country as a whole but accounts for 32% of energy use on the Dingle Peninsula as outlined in the Dingle Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) Energy Master Plan. I have been fortunate to attend some of the Dingle SEC events organised by the Dingle Hub and their collaborative partners. Presentations at these events, which outlined how this group are working towards a low carbon society by exploring, supporting and enabling a wide range of sustainability and energy initiatives on the peninsula, have been insightful and inspiring especially as they have been delivered by very driven and motivating individuals. At one of these events I lamented the fact that I am not currently in a position to adopt sustainable energy technologies for my home (e.g. upgrading insulation, solar panels, PV panels, heat pumps) to a few of the very knowledgeable community energy mentors. They gently reminded me that while transitioning to a low carbon society and achieving the goals of Dingle SEC will take time, education and investment, there are a myriad of low-tech, money saving, free and/or relatively inexpensive actions that I could easily implement to reduce energy consumption in my home if I had not already done so. There are comprehensive lists on the internet of feasible small changes that you can make around the home that could significantly reduce your expenditure on electricity and oil/gas (see list of websites to consult below) but I will just outline some that struck me in particular. Assessing Energy Use Knowing how to reduce energy usage and actually implementing the behaviours and actions needed to achieve it are two different things. Becoming aware of what it costs to run various appliances, monitoring usage and identifying where the greatest losses of energy are in your home is more likely to spur you into action than reading through some leaflets. The codema home energy saving kit contains 6 useful tools (including a thermal leak detector and a plug in energy monitor) that will help you understand your energy consumption at home and identify where savings can be made. They can be borrowed free of charge through an inter library loan at Dingle Library. Dingle library also has a humidity monitor and plug in energy monitor available to borrow which were kindly donated by Kerry Sustainable Energy Co-op (KSEC). Many electricity suppliers now have apps to allow you to look back over your actual energy usage (separate from all the other charges e.g. PSO levy etc.) so you can track the reduction in your energy use and bills as you implement changes to reduce energy waste. Hot water & Heating Most of the energy used in our homes goes on heating space and water. Lowering your thermostat by even one degree in the winter can reap huge savings on your bills. Fitting relatively inexpensive or even homemade draft excluders to doors, windows and the letterbox will reduce heat loss and simple actions like keeping the curtains closed at night to conserve heat and keeping doors closed all help to reduce energy consumption. 24 West Kerry Live

Chargers (for mobile phones, sat navs, wi-fi etc.) and laptop docking stations use energy regardless of whether they are charging or not because power supplies not only convert energy but also consume it. Anything with a transformer (the black power boxes on power cords; white on apple products) all draw power as long as it plugged in. Vampire power can account for between 5% and 10% of the electricity bill in the average home but all that needs to be done to avoid this cost and reduce energy waste is to unplug appliances and devices when not in use. Using a power strip for appliances that are close to each other makes the habit of unplugging devices easier. Lighting Lighting accounts for about 12% of a typical residential electricity bill. The most obvious p lace to start in reducing energy consumption associated with lighting is to switch off lights that you don’t need (Turn off the lights! Turn off the immersion! and close the door! are surely the soundtrack to many Irish childhoods). As of 2013, the manufacture of ordinary incandescent lightbulbs have been banned making way for more energy efficient alternatives. You can choose between eco-halogen bulbs, CFL bulbs or LED bulbs and where once you just choose between bulbs of different wattage, you can now choose different lightbulb shapes, power consumption (watts), brightness (lumen) and light colour. Codema have a very good guide to energy saving light bulbs online well worth a read so you can understand how an LED bulb (which uses 85% less electricity than traditional lightbulbs) can save on average €100 or more in energy costs over its lifetime (multiply by the number of bulbs in your home to calculate the savings!). Attending a Dingle SEC event is well worth your while to swap old bulbs for energy saving LEDs for FREE! Appliances There are particular energy saving behaviours that we can follow when using every energy dependant appliance in our homes. These are described in manufacturer’s instructions as well as on the websites listed below. Appliances that need to heat up or cool down generally use the most energy so here are a few to be more mindful of. • Only boil what you need in the kettle- it saves both energy and water and it is quicker to boil. • Ensure you have a full wash for washing machines and dishwashers and use optimal temperature settings (50oC is optimal for a dishwasher). • An electric fan oven is one of the most electricity thirsty appliances in our homes. Consider batch cooking when using the oven for optimal use of the energy consumed. • Don’t open the oven while food is cooking unless necessary as this will cause the oven to have to reheat itself which will require a lot of energy. Equally, staring into the fridge or freezer looking for something to eat is not advisable. Every time a fridge door is opened for 10-20 seconds it takes 45 minutes to cool down again. • Fridges and freezers operate most efficiently when full as the less cold air circulating, the less that can escape when you open the door. Fill empty space with bottles of water or newspapers. • Cleaning ovens, washing machines, dishwashers etc. and defrosting fridges and freezers regularly will help run them more efficiently

(check out Laura de Barra’s book ‘Gaff Goddess’ or on her social media for top cleaning tips). Energy Providers While you may not currently be in a position to install environmental technologies that could allow you to become more self-sufficient for your energy requirements, you can still choose renewable energy indirectly through your energy provider. There are currently 5 electricity suppliers in Ireland known to provide 100% of their energy from renewable sources. Energia, Panda Power, Pinergy and SSE Airtricity will be familiar to most people and will be included as options on comparison websites such as www.bonkers.ie and www.switcher.ie. A new provider in the market is Community Power – a community owned energy project supplying sustainable power from its wind farm in Co. Tipperary supplemented with renewable energy from micro-scale wind and hydro generators from all around the country. All consumer affair experts advise switching providers of gas and electricity regularly in order to save money. Asking where your energy comes from could be a consideration the next time you search for a better energy deal. www.seai.ie www.codema.ie www.selectra.ie https://communitypower.ie/ ie www.switcher.ie

Castlegregory GAA CASTLE SENIORS: Castle Seniors began their Div 4 County League journey with a strong win over neighbours Lispole on Sunday last. A very encouraging, focused display with scorers form all through the team, final score Castle 1-18, Lispole 0-06. This Sunday, 15th Castle welcome Waterville to Páirc An Caisleán for their Round 2 League fixture with a 2pm throw-in. All support will be very welcome. MINORS: County League Div. 2 started last Saturday for the Minors down in Kenmare. In desperate conditions Castle took advantage of a gale force wind in the opening 30 minutes to lead by 2-5 to 03. A re-configuration of positions, staunch defending and some great possessive play help the lads keep the Shamrocks scoring to a minimum. Final score of 2-07 to 0-8 for Castle made the trip home that little bit shorter. Saturday 14th see Castle Minors host Knock/ Duagh/Brosna at Páirc An Caisleán with a 4pm throw in. UNDERAGE TRAINING: Training for underage panels continues with times as follows - U16s on Mondays 7-8pm, U12s & U14s training on Tuesday 7-8pm at Páirc An Caisleán. Minor training on Thursdays at 7pm. SCHOOLS: Mean Scoil Castlegregory are back in a Munster Football Final, this time it’s the Girls U16.5 who will be carrying the flag. A thriller of a semi-final against St Josephs of Borrisoleigh the Castle girls looked home and dry leading by 2-05 to 0-03 at half time. But nothing so straight forward as the Tipp Girls edged back into the game with 2 goals early in the second half and they had points to follow on. In the end Castle got over the line by the narrowest of margins, 2-07 to 2-06. Again a great success for the Mean Scoil in the world of football…..Final at the end of the month against winners of St Colmnas, Midleton v Gael Coláiste Mhuire AG. CASTLE LGFA: Underage training for all our Girls panels (U2, U14 & U16) on Mondays 6-7pm at Pairc An Caisleán. Castle Ladies (Minors and Seniors) training on Sunday mornings. Dáithí Ó Sé Announces Line Up for New Show

Gaibrial, Noah and Eve Eadie taking time out in the shade in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands.

Kingdom of Kerry Tour 2020

With just a number of weeks to go to the opening night of his brand new stage show, Dáithí O Sè has lined up a mega mix of well known names to take part in his three Kerry shows. From comedy to politics and sport to music, ‘Dàithì’s Rhyme with Reason’ will be a comedy panel show like no other. His Kingdom of Kerry Tour will consist of three shows in Listowel, Dingle and Tralee this April and May. Team captains for all three shows will be journalists and writers Pat Fitzpatrick and Esther McCarthy from the Examiner. Joining Dáithí in Dingle on will be comedy duo the 2 Johnnies, comedians Fred Cooke, Julie Jay and a special satellite link up with the ‘Local Gossip’ Bernard Casey. The up and coming music star performance on the night will be from Cathal Flaherty. In Listowel some very well known local personalities including Billy Keane and Elaine Kinsella battle it out to secure the coveted audience points. Special music guest will be Grace Foley and one of Ireland’s best known sports personalities will make a special appearance. In Tralee former Irish Rugby International star Mick Galwey reveals the five most memorable moments of his life and guest panelists will be TV and radio personality Brenda Donohue who will go up against the one and only Michael Healy Rae. Young Tralee musician Seamus Harty who is making waves in the music scene will close the show. Dàithì says: “I can’t wait to do these three shows. I am thrilled with the mix of guests that have come on board to support me in my new show. Each show will be just as mad and entertaining as the other with a number of surprises thrown in. It will be an opportunity for people to escape and enjoy a night of laughs and a good bit of craic. In essence on the night I will introduce some weird and wacky news stories to the two competing teams. Once introduced the teams will have to come up with their own rhymes that best tell the story and then the audience decides which team is funnier. Of course I will be doing my best to distract them as they try and come up with these rhymes. Also each show will see a well known celeb tell me the five most memorable moments in their lives so far and I will introduce an up and coming music star onto the stage to close the show. Dáithí from West Kerry is best known as host of the Rose of Tralee International Festival and presenter of the Today Show on RTÉ One with Maura Derrane. Dáithí says that this show will allow him to let his hair down away from the TV cameras so expect the unexpected! The first show will be at the Listowel Arms Hotel on April 25th with a hometown show in Dingle on April 26th. The following weekend Dáithí and guests will be at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee on Friday May 1st 2020. With only three shows confirmed so far demand for tickets will be very strong, you can book right now through ticketmaster.ie or ticketweb.ie This will be an over 18’s show.

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Many thanks to our local ar tists, walkers, students, archaeologists and historians who participated in the recent pilot “Walking Conversations” weekend in association with the Dept of Sociology, UCC which explored the connections between walking and learning. The weekend was an opportunity to take part in walking conversations that enable dialogue concerning theory, practice and methods (non-procedural methods) about: landscapes; pilgrimage; time; the senses; and ecology. Walking involves slowing down the pace of our accelerated society/lives - disconnecting from electronic devices, it opens a space for conversation, for storytelling, for connection with each other, with nature, the natural world, geology, rocks and stones, archaeology, the history revealed by the landscape, ecology and sustainability. Connections were indeed formed, collaborations identified and limitless potential to build on this pilot to enhance our learning on the edge. ESB Networks will run Energy Information Sessions on the Dingle Peninsula over the next 2 months which will cover the following topics: •

Electrification of Heat

Electrification of Transport

Solar PVs

Battery Management Systems

Property Retrofits

SEAI Grant Funding

The information sessions are currently in planning stages, but expect each session to be about 60–90 minutes and have a mix of Independent Experts/Dingle Community Members/ESB Staff. Each session will include a presentation followed by a Questions and Answers session with a panel of experts. If there is anything in particular that you would like to see included or if you have any specific questions, please send them through to dingle@ esbnetworks.ie and they will be included where appropriate. Details on dates and locations for these sessions will be finalised once there is more visibility re Covid-19. They will be published here and also in the diary of events on www. corcadhuibhne2030.com. If you dread the thought of speaking up in a meeting, giving a presentation at work or making a speech, then the course for you is starting soon. Land to Sea wins Dingle's second Bib Gourmond

The husband-and-wife co-owners met in France (Julian is English-born to a Cork family and Katia hails from Italian-French parentage) and had been living, working and raising their young son in west Kerry for a number of years before opening their smart-casual restaurant in the spring of 2019. And, thanks to the sense of locality, good cooking and value offered, Land to Sea quickly earned well deserved recognition. In Chef Julian’s interpretation, the often used (and seldom defined) term “Modern Irish Cuisine” has one foot in our agrarian past and the other in the realm of possibility. Using good, honest produce which might have been found in our grandmothers’ or great-grandmothers’ kitchens, Julian uses a nuanced hand to coax rich, exciting flavours appropriate to modern taste. Inhouse curing and smoking, as well as pickling and fermenting are just some of the techniques resurrected from Ireland’s past and updated with contemporary sensibility. Influenced by the finesse of European cookery but rooted in Irish traditions. Their take on food is based in the belief that everyone should be afforded the opportunity to experience foods grown, raised, caught, and foraged by their neighbours transformed, by adept hands, into a cuisine of international repute. Michelin Guide’s Point Of View

The new Land to Sea restaurant which only opened last year on Main Street, received a much coveted Bib Gourmond award from the Michelin guide last October after just one season in business. The Charthouse restaurant have held a Bib for a long time and there are two other local restaurants which are recommended with a Plate award: Out of the Blue and Global Village. "In Land to Sea Julian and Katia Wyatt bring an international sensibility to the excellent value menu at their comfortable and relaxed Main Street restaurant, but the produce at the heart of Julian’s skilful cooking is (almost) pure Dingle, with just a sprinkling of impeccable sourcing from beyond the peninsula. And what a fine natural larder Dingle offers, with suppliers like Jerry Kennedy butchers, Sully the Kid crab and lobster, Iasc Ui Mhathuna Teo fish, Derek O’Conner’s vegetables and Dingle Distillery all on their doorstep." - Georgina Campbell

Michigan Radio Show To Broadcast From Dingle On St. Patrick’s Day

"The name sums it up perfectly, as the chef uses produce from the surrounding fields and nearby waters to full advantage. Local meats and wonderfully fresh fish and shellfish are prepared with care and a good understanding of flavours. If the crab salad is on the menu, be sure to choose it." Julian and Katia are re-opening on Monday the 16th for their second season and we wish them continued success in helping to raise the culinary profile of the town and its food producers through their much lauded restaurant

Benner’s General Manager John Foley will discuss Ireland’s worldrenowned hospitality and cuisine. Assistant Manager Aisling Flahive will also appear on-air and help make sure the show is filled with Irish voices – from priests to politicians - telling tales, singing, talking issues, pouring pints and simply ‘being Irish.’” Shiels, an inductee into the Michigan Irish American Hall of Fame, has now been hosting his radio program for 13 years. It can be heard on radio stations across Michigan. Feel free to add other ingredients to it such as: some chopped chili at the beginning or spinach or pok choi (add these at the same time as the noodles). Tasty and well worth a try. ½ bunch of spring onions sliced salt Method Put the chicken, onions, garlic, ginger, bay leaf, spices and about two pinches of salt in a large pot. Pour in cold water to cover and bring to a boil over medium heat. Once it comes to the boil, reduce it to a simmer. Cook this for about 45-50 minutes. Make sure to skim it every ten minutes or so, this will help to reduce any excess fat or grease. After about 50 minutes the chicken should be cooked. To check this, you can twist the bone in the leg of the chicken, if cooked it should twist freely and the meat will come apart. At this stage remove the chicken, remove the skin from chicken and discard. Pull the meat from bones and shred into bite-size pieces. To increase the flavour you can add the bones back to the pot and continue to cook for another 20 minutes or so. Season with salt and pepper.

Film Review Onward Tom Ó Neachtain Onward is the latest film from animation giant Pixar and is their first original film since Coco in 2017. It’s fairly decent without being ground breaking. The story follows two brothers who discover a way of bringing their dead father back to life, but only for a single day. The film is set in a contemporary, suburban landscape populated with a posse of fantasy creatures such as elves, unicorns and centaurs. They live normal, modern lives but an early flashback establishes their ancient magical origins and this clever concept is the basis for most of the jokes - they mostly land and there are loads of great Lord of the Rings references.

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt

The character design takes a while to get used to but Onward has some of the best effects I’ve ever seen in an animated movie. The writing overall is sharp although it occasionally falls into more animation clichés than I would like, and after a while some of the scenes become repetitive. However the the two leads play off each other very well, in general the story is engaging and the end is very satisfying. Onward is creative in its portrayal of the world and it has plenty of heart. It’s a pity that Pixar make so few original projects these days, instead they rely too much on sequels to make money. Onward does not live up to Pixar’s hot streak from the 2000s, but is still very enjoyable and has more personality and more depth than most of modern animation. Tom Ó Neachtain is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne I gcás amháin dhá chontae i mbun Roinn a haon agus an líon céanna poinntí acu. An contae a bhuafadh, d’fanfadh sé i Roinn a haon agus tuairt dtí roinn a dó lucht cailllte na himeartha foireann a caillfear, dá mbuafa fanacht i atá i ndán do bhfoireaan a chaillfeadh. Ná fuil an aimsir imithe thar cailc ar fad. Báisteach agus síor bháisteach. Le damnú ceart a chur leis, bréistí mallaithe ag éirí thiar aisti. Tá ba ag breith fós agus caoire ag fanacht le cúpla lá breá go mbeadh caoi acu bainne a bheith acu dá gcuid uan. Gan dabht bíonn na huain agus na caoire níos sásta bheith istigh ón anaithe. Rud a bhuaileann iad go minic ná galair agus dá bharr cailltear nó pasáltar na huain bhochta. Ní mór don bhfeirmeóir a bheith ar tineall mar is mó aicíd agus máchailí a bhuailean an tuan ‘óg. Ansan tá na daoine ná cuireann aon chaora isteach agus is minic gur beag an galar a bhuaileann iad. Caithfidh an cóta atá ortha go bhfuil teocht thar bárr ag baint le. Má bhíonn gala agus raistí báistí ní chabhraíonn san leo. Bíonn an fiach dúbh ag faire agus má bhraitheann sé aon soet lagú ar an gcaora nó ar an uan tabharfaidh sé fútha. An- chladhaire sea é. Níl an madra rua ró dhian ar éinne fós. Deirtear gur ag tosach an Aibreáin a bhíonn na coileáin acu agus, má tá aon fhíothal uain ann glanfar é. Rud eile gabhann sé timpealll ar na caoire agus a cuid uan agus ardóidh sé leis aon leat-chupla lag . Is beag an aird a thugann an feirmeoir ar uain laga mar gur beag an mhaith a bheadh ionta go deó. Tagann ampla ar an madra rua déanfaidh sé slad go dtí go mbraitheann go bhfuil madraí an bhaile ar tineall le tabhairt fé. Sa chás san raghaaidh sé tamall maith ó bhaile agus beidh ag braith roimhis.

Caithfear a bheith dian agus tuisceanach. Sin galar amháin a scriosfaidh tíortha idir bheag agus mór, saibhir agus daibhir. Chuirfidh sé sceón ar scata. Mura mbíonn leigheas is mó tir a brisfear agus is mó duine a gheabhaidh bás á bharr. Is ionann é agus pláigh do short eile. Ní aon dóichín an cladhaire seo .

Má tá duine breoite gan aon phingin aige/aici ná aici is ceart féachaint ina ndiaidhh agus scataí eile mar daoine mí-chumasach Tá cailíní agus buachaillí óga ar iarraidh tigh a thógaint agus is beag an tacaíocht a fhaigheann siad ach cluas bhodhar. Measaim da bhfaghadh daoine ar bheagán deontas €60,000 nó mar sin. Chabhródh sé leo siúd atá idir bhocht agus go maith as, a dtigh féin a thógaint. Tá scata i dtithe comhairle sna bailte móra agus ní raghaidís fad do choise dtí aon sort oibre. [ is dócha go bhfuil a leithí ins gach aon áit] Níl a bhfuil ráite agam ró-chruinn ach tá sé in am teacht ar chórais chothram agus cé hiad, the working class.

Víras mallaithe. An galar a eascair i gcathair sa tSín. Gach cosúlacht go scaipfidh sé ar fuaid an domhain mura bhfuil cheanna. Deirim go ndéanfaidh sé seo díóbháil, ní amhain na daoine bochta a gheofaidh bás mar ná fuil leigheas. Caithfear púicín a bheith ar dhaoine a theann amach, agus a lámha glanta ag gach aon duine. Beidh stop ar thaisteal, beidh sé deacair teacht ar bhia. Beidh cailliúínt mhílteach i gcás taistil. Na sluaite ‘ge baile. An cás céanna i scoileanna, agus láthracha oibre. Baidh easpa bia in aiteanna mar go gcaithfear iad siúd go bhfuil an galar ortha a fanacht ón bpobal agus ní bheidh fonn amach ar éinne. Ní dhéanfad scéal uafáis dó ach is scéal thar scéalta conair an Víras seo.

Jobseeker’s Benefit for self-employed people Question I have run my own company for several years, but things have become very difficult lately. I’ve always understood that being self-employed meant that I didn’t qualify for unemployment benefits but I heard that there have been changes lately. Will I qualify for social welfare if my business goes bust? Answer You may qualify for the new Jobseeker’s Benefit (Self-Employed) (JBSE), if you are no longer self-employed. To qualify for JBSE, you must have lost your self-employment involuntarily and not because of a temporary shutdown or seasonal closure. However, you do not have to cancel your registration for taxes with Revenue to qualify. You must also be: •

Aged between 18 and 66

Unemployed – you can work as an employee for up to 3 days per week and still be considered unemployed

Capable of work – if you have an illness or injury, you may qualify for a different social welfare payment and should talk to your GP and local Citizens Information Centre or INTREO office.

Genuinely seeking full-time work

You must also satisfy the social insurance (PRSI) contributions conditions. You need: •

At least 156 weeks of Class S contributions or at least 104 weeks of paid Class A or H PRSI since first starting work

52 weeks of Class S contributions paid in the governing contribution year. This is the second-last complete tax year before the year in which your claim is made. So, for claims made in 2020, the governing contribution year is 2018.

If you do not qualify for JBSE, you may get Jobseeker’s Allowance. If you have 260 or more Class S PRSI contributions, you can get JBSE for up to 9 months. If you have fewer than 260 Class S PRSI contributions, you can get JBSE for up to 6 months. If you are over 65, you may continue to be paid until your 66th birthday, even if your claim is due to end before that date. The maximum rate for JBSE in 2020 is €203. You may be entitled to an increase for your spouse or partner, and children. You should apply as soon as you are no longer self-employed. To apply, you fill out a UP1 application form and bring it to your local Intreo Centre or local Social Welfare Branch Office. And despite the weather our open day Leap Into The Library on Saturday March 1 was a great success. Thanks very much to everyone who braved the egregious elements and participated in the creative arts and crafts session. It was great fun. Keep watching this space, as they say, because we’ll be holding another one sometime around Easter.

BUNAITHE AR OBAIR A DHEIN

MÍCHEÁL Ó DUBHSHLÁINE Comharchumann Dhún Chaoin

Seo leabhar nua i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla ar thubaist a tharla in 1870. ‘Tharla tragóid thubaisteach i nDún Chaoin, 5 Bealtaine 1870. Maraíodh ceathrar ar an dtoirt agus cailleadh triúr eile laistigh de sheachtain nuair a chuaigh ceaig íle trí thine. Fágadh scamall bróin ar an bparóiste go ceann na mblianta fada. Cuntas ar an eachtra choscrach úd atá sa leabhrán seo mar aon le seanchas áitiúl agus le cuntaisí ó nuachtáin na linne chun léiriú chomh hiomlán is chomh cruinn agus is féidir a sholáthar. Tá léaráidí agus mapa anseo a cabhróidh le tuiscint an léitheora. Dhá dhán san áireamh chomh maith, ceann a cumadh ag an am agus ceann eile a cumadh le déanaí’ - Comharchumann Dhún Chaoin. - An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Beidh imeacht eile ar siúl i gcómhair páistí óga áfach níos luaithe ná sin, An Satharn beag seo, 21 Márta ar ndóigh. Seisiún beag scéalaíochta atá i gceist againn ag tosnú ag 11.00am. Ná caill é. If you would like to read more about the changes, both ongoing and recent to your library service then why not take a look at the Libraries Ireland website. Where you can discover how to join your local library service, browse the extensive collection of free items, access online resources, find out about children's programmes, reading tips and information on services to primary and secondary schools, all on LibrariesIreland.ie. Libraries have changed and have become much more accessible and they belong to YOU. So if you haven’t already then buail isteach chugainn láithreach bonn. On Thursday 19 March at 7pm local writer, folklorist, horticulturist and environmental activist Luke Eastwood will give a talk entitled 'The Irish Landscape, past, present and future'. An overview of Ireland's historical attitude to care of our environment. A look at where we are now and what the future holds. All welcome. Tá an leabharlann ar oscailt Luan go hAoine 10.00 – 5.00 agus go dtí 8.00pm oíche Déardaoin. 066-9151499 / dingle@kerrycoco.ie Ná déan dearúd. Lig do scíth le Leabharlann Chiarraí
