Silent Streets Another fortnight has slipped by and we're two weeks further down the road to a return to normality. In the meantime there is a continuing air of surreality to everything. Walking the streets of Dingle is a strange experience these days, all the buildings look picture-postcard pretty in the fine weather, but the doors are closed and there's no one around. It all resembles a pristine film set waiting for the cast to show up. And there's an unusual beauty to it all.
drowned out by the drone and distraction of modern life. There's a different kind of tweeting going on. None of us would choose to have a dangerous virus dictate the patterns of our lives, but for the most part we have dealt with the restrictions it has imposed on us admirably. People have used the time to immerse themselves in long lost pursuits and discover new passions. From cooking to DIY, from setting seeds to digging up family trees, we will all come out of it with something new.
Normality will return in time, the cast will eventually arrive back on set and the next chapter will begin. But the situation we're in gives us time and space to consider, among other things, what that normality can look like. Maybe we'll think twice before making needless car journeys, we may be more inclined to support local producers and explore our own area. Maybe the silence we are being afforded will stand to us in the long run. In the meantime keep an ear out for for the birds singing overhead, an rud is annamh is iontach.
The volume has been turned way down as well. Traffic has dwindled to a trickle of what it was, no noise wafts out from the bars, cafes and restaurants, no roars radiate from the football field, no mass gatherings or even gatherings at mass, no festivals, no one in a hurry. With the pace of life having slowed and the noise nearly muted, it's like a physics experiment where speed and sound have been altered slightly to produce something new. Something slower and quieter, like the clock had been stopped some time before Ryan's Daughter rolled into town. The new circumstances can beget new experiences, the familiar rendered subtly different. Walking the empty streets in the evening is a case in point, at times the only sound breaking the silence is that of the birds overhead. There is an opportunity here to appreciate what has been there all along but had largely been

West Kerry Mandala Start with one colour you really want to use then keep going without thinking at all! You can get an image of the mandala for downloading and colouring on this webpage https://dnote.website/product/una-ni-she-west-kerry-mandala/ You can send it to other people by any means you choose – on paper or as
an attachment for printing out. The mandalas can be coloured and shared. A group of people who receive the image can also send a drawing or photo of a pet relaxing or of something lovely seen in the last week to a selected person. That person then has to design the next mandala using those images as a source of images.

• A 3-month extension on outstanding TAMs payment claims for projects to be completed by 1 July;
Louis Murchan
• Health & Safety course requirement for TAMS – As these courses are now postponed, a derogation is now in place which defers the obligation to do the course but allows the applicant to be paid for completed works. This derogation is proposed for a 3-month period. These participants will be required to complete a course when courses resume.
WARNING AGAINST ANY ILLEGAL BURNING OF LAND Farmers were warned last week that they must not burn land at this time of year and doing so may have serious consequences for farm payments. Most on-farm visits are currently suspended due to the COVID19 crisis; however, the Dept of Agriculture continue to monitor satellite imagery to identify lands that are illegally burned. Follow-up ground inspections will take place if necessary. Under current circumstances it would be an act of gross misconduct to set illegal fires. As well as endangering lives and property and doing untold damage to the environment, illegal burning of your land will put your own payments at risk and can also adversely affect your neighbour’s payments at this time of crisis: If you burn land between the 1st March and 31st August you risk prosecution, fines and potential imprisonment • Burnt land is not eligible for payment under the Basic Payment Scheme and other area-based schemes; • Inclusion of illegally burnt land in the 2020 Basic Payment Scheme application may result in reduced payment and penalties under this scheme and the other area-based schemes, e.g. Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme; • Illegal burning can also render the land of your neighbour’s ineligible for payment; • Where it is identified that lands were burned during the closed season this may result in on-farm inspection of such land in due course. Individuals who are found to burn vegetation within the prohibited period are liable to prosecution by An Garda or the National Parks and Wildlife Service. BPS, ANC & GLAS applicants are obliged to comply with Cross Compliance which includes burning restrictions. Where farmers are found to have burned-out-of-season face penalty to these payments. Land found to have been burned during the specified closed season for burning is considered automatically ineligible under the various support schemes DAFM SCHEMES AND COVID-19 ISSUES The Department of Ag has relaxed many of the stricter routines in response to Covid-19 issues. These are being introduced to make life easier for farmers and advisors to continue to participate in these important schemes where difficulties arise from the current public health restrictions in place. Public health measures will be prioritised but it’s essential that farming continues at this time and then various schemes are important from an Irish farming point-of-view The list of flexibilities includes: • Inspections: The Department has generally paused routine onfarm visits for two weeks. However, some essential inspections may be necessary on a risk basis. • Young Farmer Scheme: Inspection interviews to be conducted by phone. This also applies to Young Farmer inspections under TAMS. • Young Farmer/National Reserve applications: Revised arrangements in place for lodging an application where applicant’s green cert is held up due to closure of colleges. • Basic Payment Entitlements: Revised arrangements in place for submitting applications for transferring entitlements where it requires witnessed signatures. • Nitrates: Deadline for submitting nitrates records for crosscompliance inspected cases extended to end June. •
TAMS:
• The closing date for Tranche 17 of TAMs has been deferred from 24 April to 5 June; • Flexibility on TAMS completion deadlines – a 3-month extension on all projects due to completed (or approvals due to expire) between 1 March and 1 July; 8 West Kerry Live
• GLAS: Normally 10-day deadlines for GLAS records following inspection – flexibility has already been given here with the DAFM document request latter amended to reflect this. Arrangements regarding TB testing arrangements were also relaxed. Farmers are also reminded that DAFM has established a Covid-19 helpline line which can be reached at 076 1064468. VALUING ANIMALS BECOMES A SERIOUS CHALLENGE FOR MARTS. Putting a value on animals is set to become “a significant challenge” for marts over the coming weeks, as operators continue to grapple with new Covid-19 safety restrictions. The warning comes amidst concern that some marts – particularly some located in the west of the country – may not be in a position to reopen under the new trading protocols. Last Tuesday, March 31, the Department of Agriculture issued guidance on the re-opening of the country’s marts for a limited range of essential services in compliance with the Health Service Executive’s (HSE’s) Covid-19 guidelines. The move followed clarity from Government that agriculture and food production are classified as ‘essential services’ to the state, meaning the agricultural sector is permitted to continue operating throughout the public health emergency. The limited measures in place at marts are mostly aimed at facilitating calf sales, weighing livestock, facilitating online services and facilitating the brokerage of services – all subject to the approval of standard operating procedures by the department. However, after a week of adjusting to these changes, ICOS has cautioned that one size is not fitting all! marts in the south and the east of the country may find the new measures easier to implement, as traditionally they would have larger lots of cattle of a similar age and breed. Normal mart auction activity cannot resume until further notice. However, mart managers may consider some services to be essential and to comply with the Government announcement on Saturday last. Within that overall framework, it may be possible for mart owners to use their systems and facilities to put in place alternative arrangements to allow sales of animals. These includes where the movement of animals is essential and in particular to maintain the food supply chain and protect the health and welfare of animals. In this context, two types of activities seem possible, provided they are essential and minimise the potential for contact between people: 1. For calves, a service whereby a farmer can deliver calves to the mart, by appointment, so that orders for purchase can be matched and facilitated via the mart. 2. For older livestock, a weighing service for lots of cattle/sheep, by appointment, with the mart facilitating the transaction between a buyer and a seller. Other activities, including online and other uses of new technology can of course also be considered. LIST OF 'ESSENTIAL' WORKERS WHO CAN STILL GO TO WORK THE GOVERNMENT HAS published its list of “essential” workers who can still go to work following the unprecedented restrictions introduced last night. If you are still unsure, you can check from the list below. 1. Agriculture and Fishing 2. Manufacturing 3. Repair and installation of Machinery and Equipment 4. Electricity, Gas Water 5. Construction 6. Wholesale and Retail Trade 7. Transport Storage and Communication 8. Accommodation and Food Services

12. Rental and Leasing Activities 13. Administrative and Support Services 14. Public Administration and Defence 15. Human health and social work activities 16. Community/Voluntary Services Among the specific professions included in the listed services are; farmers, food and beverage manufacturers, utility workers, construction workers in essential health projects, critical road construction workers, transport workers, hotels or essential accommodation providers, news publishers, bank workers and those in car leasing. Other specific professions are listed in the government’s publication.
With over 30 years in business providing a Septic Tank Cleaning Service in the Dingle Peninsula, we now provide DRAIN CLEANING. From 2” sink lines to 4” - 12” sewer pipes. Biocycle tanks filter system, washed after emptying. Providing power washing service and washing facility. 24 hour cover.
FARM SAFETY With schools closed and children off, these days, there are greater threats to their safety than is usual, at this time of year. They are already off for the past three weeks and are about to technically begin their Easter Holiday period. At this time of year, complacency sometimes occurs and unfortunately accidents happen. One such accident was the recent death of a small 5-year-old boy after falling from trailer in Co Roscommon. But this could have happened anywhere, so be careful out there. Finally, People are asked to abide by CoronaVirus restrictions, keep your distance from other, practice personal hygiene, wash your hands, cover your mouth while coughing or sneezing, etc. Mind yourself and be careful out there.

Your Daily Dose of Pain Relief from your Plate! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
help stabilize glucose levels, leading to better weight control. Pain sites such as hips, knees, spine and feet are aggravated by excess weight. Although headaches, fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain do not seem to be affected by weight – all pain conditions benefit from a high protein/low sugar and starch diet. The breakdown of protein to amino acids provide the building blocks of pain relieving substances such as serotonin, dopamine, endorphins and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Amino acid proline, builds cartilage and collagen, adding strength and cushioning to structural tissue in the body. Chemicals in processed foods such as aspartame, sucralose and MSG are known excitotoxins which can heighten sensitivity to pain. These chemicals are best avoided by adapting to a more natural wholefood diet, mainly plant-based. This will also benefit the microbiome (friendly bacteria) in the gut from which most of the immune system is contained and 80% of serotonin is produced. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, pesticides and processed foods have a negative effect on our gut and exacerbate symptoms.
Pain is not normal, it signals an injury or illness, it is the body’s way to alert us to change a situation or to attend to a specific site in the body. Interestingly, all pain is produced by the brain through incoming data from “danger detectors” which are distributed across all tissues and act as the eyes and ears for the brain, alerting the brain of dangers. The brain evaluates these danger messages and together with previous exposure, expectations, cultural and social beliefs and other sensory data arrives at a painful conclusion and sends healing substances to the injured site to resolve the situation and restore health to the affected site. We feel this response as pain. Inflammation is the body’s way to deal with injury and illness of which pain along with stiffness, heat, swelling and immobility are tools of the healing process. Chronic pain is defined as any pain lasting longer than three months. It affects 35% of the Irish adult population, increasing with age and manual employment. Lower back pain is the most common source of chronic pain, followed by joint pain, headaches, fibromyalgia and neuropathic pain. Pain relief medications manipulate the mechanism which results in pain, which is appropriate while a pain site heals and returns to a healthy status. However, our bodies were not designed for chronic, unresolved pain and inflammation, thus finding a drug-based solution is proving very tricky and not without damaging side effects. Unlike conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease and renal disease, there is not yet a standard dietary protocol for chronic pain. However, appropriate nutritional intervention could be the most useful tool available to sufferers to improve health outcomes and specifically reduce inflammation. After all, everything you eat changes your body’s chemistry and can either fight for you or fight against you. With this in mind and with what we already know about the effects of chronic pain, overlooking a nutritional approach is neglectful, to say the least. Malnutrition is not uncommon for chronic pain sufferers as the adrenal glands go into overdrive secreting cortisol and catecholamine (hormones) to respond to the injury. Elevated cholesterol, lipids and glucose levels are almost universal in patients of uncontrolled pain due to the excess of cortisol. Again, the long-term secretion of these hormones is not normal and leads to unstable glucose levels, loss of appetite, muscle wasting, weakness and poor mental activity. Higher intakes of sugar and starches and low protein intakes are a common dietary pattern among those in chronic pain and among those on opioidbased drug therapy. The combination of these effects damages the body further, increasing the likelihood of additional injury, inflammation and more intense pain. It is reported that many pain sufferers experience a pain flare after eating high sugar/high starch foods. A high protein diet with the restriction of sugar and starches will help reduce pain flares and also 12 West Kerry Live
Magnesium helps muscle, blood vessels and nerve tissue to relax – easing pain and inflammation. Deficiency is prevalent among diabetic patients and is a contributory factor to chronic pain, decreased healing and neuropathy among this group. Adequate magnesium levels may also improve inflammation, fibromyalgia and myofascial pain. Omega 3 from oily fish, nuts and seeds is a powerful anti-inflammatory to be consumed regularly and helps negate the inflammatory effects of omega 6 and trans fats which are prevalent in the Western diet. Salt too, gets the bullet, as it can increase water retention around pain sites leading to more pain and stiffness. There is an enormous amount of good research available regarding nutrition and pain yet the predominant dietary patterns among sufferers is inadequate, often contributing to pain levels and inflammation. Emerging research in nutraceuticals such as vitamin D, Curcumin (turmeric), Devil’s Claw, Boswelia and CBD oil is promising, and warrant consideration in a dietary protocol for pain and inflammation. However, pain is not normal and to think that it can be “managed” in the long-term is unrealistic no matter what approach is offered. Until we consider that lifestyle, dietary, environmental and psychological factors are central to all chronic illnesses and therefore, central to recovery, the pain and suffering is set to continue. On a happier note, the weather is improving and nourishing, fresh produce is more abundant giving us a wonderful opportunity to make headway to a healthier, less painful way of life! Just Breathe using the 7/11 breathing exercise.
this effect on the body. Stress hormones are produced and the body gets itself ready by shortening the breath, quickening the heartbeat etc. The in-breath gets ready for action and you may notice how we sometimes hold our breath when we are extremely stressed. Tension shows in the body, face or shoulders or for some people it creates ulcers etc. So how can we regulate this?
In these challenging times some Mindfulness practise can be very helpful in keeping a calm mind when uncertainty is present. When our body is stressed the fight and flight mode will be activated. This is a survival instinct. Even when nothing life threatening is happening, challenging thoughts can have
We want to activate the parasympathetic nervous system that comes into play with our out- breath. By becoming aware of our breath we can self-regulate the functions in our body. We basically send a signal to the nervous system that we are okay, not in danger. We connect to the rest and digest phase, which the body needs after any stressful encounter. To practice, find a quiet place and sit relaxed. Close your eyes or gaze softly ahead. Take a deep breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. Now let the breath settle again.
After a while start counting to 7 while breathing in and counting to 11 while breathing out. If you feel that you are holding your breath, shorten the count to your own rhythm, making sure that the out-breath is longer than the in-breath. Your count could be 5/9 for example. Notice the release in the shoulders and in the whole body when breathing out. Repeat at any time when you notice the body gets ready for fight/flight without a real danger. Use this practice at any time during the day. If you need any more information on the practises or any other techniques you think could be helpful for yourself or your children, please feel free to reach out to me. I am available online or by phone for one on one sessions. I am offering mindfulness as well as mindful coaching. Free taster sessions. Silke Michels Mindfulness Facilitator and Coach 087/6418184

From The Archives
The body of the other was found on Sunday morning. Great agitation pervades the locality.
Edited By Ted Creedon
Shipwreck Crew Reach Valentia
Revenue Attack Smugglers From – Dublin Evening Post, 12 May 1796 The Winder, Revenue cruiser, sailed towards the harbour of Ventry on the 4th instant, in quest of a smuggling lugger she had been informed of. On her approach the lugger bore down on her with a press of sail, and coming along side gave three cheers, which was answered by a broadside from the cruiser.
From – Tralee Chronicle, 16 February 1875 A boat’s crew, consisting of sixteen hands, landed this morning at Valentia. They belong to the ship Sydney Dacres from San Francisco with wheat for Liverpool. The vessel was abandoned some 49 miles west of the Skelligs having become unmanageable owing to damage received during the late gales. The captain and the remainder of the crew, who also left the ship in another boat, are still unheard of.
The lugger then stood off before the wind, and was chaced [sic] ten leagues by the cruiser, who had the advantage in sailing. However, her top-mast and steering-sail-boom giving way, disabled her from coming up with the lugger, otherwise the cruiser would probably have captured her. The cruiser was close enough to the smuggler as to perceive many of their crew were killed or wounded.
House Fire In Dingle
Two Ships Ashore In Maharees This day we have an account that two large ships are stranded at Maugherees [sic] on the coast of Kerry, and no likelihood of getting them off. It’s said one of them is an East-Indiaman, laden with saltpetre and pepper. The other is a cartel ship of 40 guns.
The interest of a good many will be awakened when it is stated that the building in question had replaced what was known as the Spanish House. Not many months ago the house had riveted public attention owing to a dispute between the former landlord and the tenant who, it appears, had a narrow escape this morning. The house was occupied by Miss Kate Moran and her niece. The structure presents a complete wreck and only its walls remain standing.
Blasket Tower To Let
The Earl Of Carlisle
From – Kerry Evening Post, 14 October 1840
From – Saunder’s Newsletter, 10 January 1784
To be Let for a Term of Years – The Tower and one acre of land on the Great Blasket Island, at present in the possession of the Commissioners of Coast. Proposals will be received by the Assistant-Collector and Comptroller at Tralee, and by the Inspecting Commander of the Coast-Guards at Dingle.
The brig Earl of Carlisle, with rum and sugar from Port Morant, Jamaica, arrived last week in Dingle bay in the most wretched condition having met with several heavy gales which sprung her masts and tore away her rudder. The master and crew of ten were so weak when towed in by a fishing wherry that they could scarcely walk the deck.
From – Pue’s Occurrences, 4 November 1758
[This is interesting. The building was erected in the early 1800s as a signal tower in case of a French invasion. The first Ordnance Survey map of the island, from 1841, shows the tower in ruins].
From – Kerry Evening Post, 28 September 1904 At I.30 o’clock this morning the inhabitants of Main Street were startled out of their slumber by an alarm of fire which had taken possession of the new house situated at the junction of Main Street and Green Lane.
Drunk And Disorderly At Ballinclare Fair From – Kerry Evening Post, 14 October 1863 On the evening of the 4th, the fair day of Ballinclare, a widow named O’Donnell, who has a public house in the village, came to the barrack and complained that a number of drunken men were in her house and refused to leave. Constable Coyle and party went with her, and on entering the house found all in confusion. The fellows resisted, and one of them struck one of the police a blow of an iron tongs on the head. A young man named Herlihy, who some short time ago was tried for an assault on another policeman and had a narrow escape of being convicted, was arrested with a tongs on his hand.
Loss Of Life In Tralee Bay From – Tralee Chronicle, 15 October 1861 On Saturday the most fearful gale blew with incessant violence from two o’clock in the afternoon to the same hour on Sunday when it somewhat abated. An industrious poor boatman named Sheehan living at Talaght, just opposite the Lighthouse Rock, or small Samphire Island, had a contract for supplying the lighthouse with water and provisions. The lighthouse keeper came into Tralee, as usual, on Saturday for his marketing and returned to the island about five o’clock in Sheehan’s boat. They reached the island safe though the sea raged furiously, but on the return of the boat a mountain wave capsized it within twelve yards of the shore. The crew, consisting of Florence Sheehan, the owner, a man named Ryle and another named John Parker were dashed among the seething billows. Parker managed to swim ashore but Sheehan and Ryle were drowned. The boatmen of the area set off and managed to find one body. West Kerry Live 15

Dingle Notes Richie Williams ROAD WORKS. Some much needed roads repairs and resurfacing has been successfully completed by Kerry County Council staff over the past few weeks in town. The new surface in John Street, Upper Main Street and the Quay Areas not alone looks good but makes these areas safer for all road users. Well done to all concerned on the work which caused very little traffic disruption in these busy areas.
A number ol local groups are also available to help collect and deliver shopping or prescriptions etc for people house bound, immobile or afraid to venture out under the present covid 19 public restrictions. The Dingle GAA members contact number is through Margie Lynch at 087 6338124. Most local shops are also offering a delivery service but please phone them in good time for same day home delivery. The shop local effort is going well over the past few weeks and thankfully the supplies are still reaching West Kerry outlets to keep up with the tastes and requirements of our population so far.
DISTILLERY. Comhgairdeachas to the Dingle Distillery crew who have diversified their operations to produce an alcohol based hand sanitiser for hospitals and medical centres who are very much in need of same during the present crisis. It was also planned to have supplies available in local medical related outlets this week.
TIDY TOWNS. We remind you all this week to Think Before You Flush as hand wipes and other large disposable items are not suitable to flush down your toilet. Such items are found to be the main cause of sewage system blockages which cost a lot of time and money to repair as well as the nasty odour left in homes and surrounds generally.
COMMUNITY CALL. A community response forum has been set up in each local authority area in the country under the direction of the county ceo. The purpose of Community Call is to coordinate community activity and to direct community assistance to where it is needed at various times. The phone number to contact in Kerry is 1800 807009.
TRAVEL RESTRICTIONS. I presume by the time you read this edition that the travel restrictions will have been extended for a further period. We can all play our part in this World War against the invisable enemy of Covid 19 by staying at home for as long as possible and restricting our movements to the 2 kilometre distances
permitted for exercise and necessary journeys. We should also look at the outcome of this unprecedented challenge in a positive way otherwise depression can set in very quickly and bring dark clouds to our lives. The recent time change results in longer daylight in the evenings always a sign of the warmer summer weather on the way. The increased numbers working from home may be able to convince their employers that it is possible to do so long term resulting in more people living in rural areas like West Kerry. Another positive is that families have more time to spend together something which the pace and calls of outside influences have eroded over the past decade or so. I recommend reading that book from the pen of our local author titled The Year The Tourists Did Not Come which although in jest actually did predict exactly what is happening at present. Anybody ready to put pen to paper and predict a way out of these strange times will be sure of a best seller. Lets look on the bright side for now and dont forget to keep an eye or ear out for your neighbours who may be in need of help or some comforting words at present. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

Small Changes: Covid Gardens
If I was to be incredibly charitable my garden could be described as ‘rewilding’. While I have never had any great ambition to grow shrubs and herbaceous borders, I have always liked growing food and up until about five years ago I tried my best to maintain a vegetable plot that Gerry Daly would be proud of. I propagated plants from seed, chitted potatoes, staked peas, side shooted tomatoes, sat beer traps for slugs, stressed about blight warnings, followed all the advice on companion planting and successional sowing, purchased fleece and netting to protect my plants and consulted every recommended gardening book I could find. Unfortunately, my abilities and time management did not match the scale of my ambitions and having bitten off more than I could chew, there were not enough hours in the day to keep on top of all the jobs. Moreover, it was no longer enjoyable and so I ended up abandoning it entirely.
accomplishment when everything goes to plan. However, ultimately gardening is a craft and like any craft it takes time and patience to develop the required knowledge, skills and experience. It can entail heavy manual work, it can be an expensive hobby if you are not making the best use of equipment, plants, compost etc. and when forces outside your control such as the weather or pests (or a herd of cattle escaped from a neighbouring field) destroy your crop it can be very disillusioning.
‘black gold’. It replaces fertility lost from the soil, protects soil from the weather and can boost emerging seedlings when mixed with potting compost. There are hundreds of sites and videos online to direct you on how to start home composting but three to start you off are www.stopfoodwaste.ie www.cleanireland.ie and www.gardenorganic.org.uk. Organisations such as Transition Kerry often hold workshops on home composting which are worth checking out.
If you wish to be able to continue gardening in the long term it is essential to identify the obstacles to enjoyable home growing that may arise. The easiest way to do this is by starting out on a very small scale. Beginning with some fast growing resilient plants such as salad crops or pea shoots that can be grown on a windowsill or outside in a seed bed will provide reward with minimum effort but give you with an introduction to successional growing and if planted outside will provide you with an education in dealing with pests such as slugs and greenfly. Planting a few potatoes or onions will help identify other barriers such as site exposure and aspect, soil condition, the need to fence off an area from pets etc. Most importantly from my experience, starting small will help you gauge how much time you will have to tend to your garden at different times of the year so that you can grow at a scale that ensures you will continue to enjoy this pastime into the future. This is a particularly important point to acknowledge at the moment because the unprecedented amount of free time we have presently will hopefully be short lived.
ELIMINATE PESTICIDE USE
COMPOSTING
I had been contemplating starting to grow again this year and my excuses about not having the time evaporated with the recent lockdown restrictions. It seems that a high proportion of the rest of the world have had a similar idea with some online seed companies noticing a tenfold increase in the demand for vegetable seeds by amateur gardeners this year in addition to reports of the panic buying and stockpiling of certain varieties. Crisis gardening is not a new phenomenon. Concerns about food security led to the victory garden movements during WWI and WWII and seed retailers have always noted spikes in demand in recessionary times as growing food is seen as a way to save money and become more self-sufficient. In addition, growing your own food and flowers is a life affirming and mindful pastime to do in times of crisis; as Audrey Hepburn is quoted as saying ‘to plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow’. However, gardening is not all sunshine and roses (pardon the pun) so I offer some advice to beginners based on my own ill-fated experience in addition to some simple considerations to ensure the sustainability of all gardens. START SMALL Gardening is good for both physical and mental health, it’s a way of connecting with nature, it fosters a sense of community with other gardeners and there is a huge sense of 18 West Kerry Live
Anybody who has ever tried to dig out the roots of dock leaves or has seen how much the caterpillars of the cabbage white butterfly can consume will understand the lure of using pesticides and herbicides. It should always be remembered though that pesticides, no matter the packaging, are essentially poisons and it isn’t rational to spend hours of your time and money creating a garden if you are going to coat it in poison. Insecticides are not selective in which bugs they kill and beneficial insects such as pollinators will be poisoned as well as the greenfly or slugs you might be targeting. Moreover, pesticides affect pest predators such as ladybirds, hedgehogs and frogs, the very creatures that could eat the pests in the first place. Every year there are thousands of poisoning incidents from pesticides involving children and pets. More worrying are the studies which link herbicides such as the controversial glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp) to cancers, infertility, digestive problems and kidney disease in humans. It is difficult to make conclusive direct links between pesticides and illness in humans because any effects are likely to be subtle and accumulative over many years of exposure. There are a myriad of effective, natural and nontoxic pest control matures to choose from so pesticide use can be avoided but if you feel there is no alternative available to tackle a certain plant or area in your garden then spot treat rather than blanket spray an area and always follow the guidelines exactly. CONSIDER POLLINATORS AND WILDLIFE
Composting is the ultimate way to reuse and recycle. Waste such as vegetable peelings, toilet roll holders, coffee grounds, dog hair, leaf litter and grass clippings can all be placed on a heap to decompose into dark rich compost. As well as reducing the amount of organic waste going to landfill and reducing your reliance on peat based products for gardening, the product of the home composting process is an excellent soil conditioner. Compost holds all the essential nutrients and moisture needed for good plant growth which is why it is often referred to as
Pollinators are needed to grow many of the fruit and vegetables that make up a balanced diet. Most pollination is carried out by bees and of the 99 species in Ireland over a third are currently threatened with extinction. No matter what the size of the garden, even a window boxes, a pit stop for hungry bees can be provided. When choosing flowers to grow consider planting pollinator friendly flowers. Irish native wildflower mixes are ideal but single headed flowers and perennials (e.g. crocus, cosmos, sunflowers, heathers, borage, ivy) are generally better
sources of pollen and nectar than annuals or double headed varieties. Try to ensure that the seeds and flower bulbs (e.g. crocus) you purchase are not coated in systemic pesticides (neonicotinoids) as they are very toxic to bees. Increasing the biodiversity of your garden does not have to compromise the way your garden looks. While reducing the frequency of cutting your grass is the most cost effective way to provide for pollinators even delaying the first cut until mid-April after dandelions have flowered (but before they set seed) will provide a vital source of spring food for pollinators (many plants we consider weeds are actually edible so they can be of benefit to people as well as pollinators e.g. herbal teas can be made using dandelions and the leaves and petals of daisies can be used in salads). Creating nesting habitats such as bee nesting boxes and earth banks for solitary bees or areas of long grass for bumblebee nesting provide shelter for wild pollinators. Gardens which provide food, shelter and safety for pollinators will almost certainly attract other wildlife such as a variety of insects, birds, hedgehogs, and small mammals like voles and shrews. Providing food and water for birds all year will further attract these most conspicuous of garden wildlife. Digging a garden pond however small, and allowing it to colonise naturally will also increase garden biodiversity. CONSERVE WATER West Kerry gardeners are more likely to complain about the effects of too much rain on their
gardens than too little. However, droughts such as the one in 2018 demonstrated the benefits of installing a rainwater butt to collect rainwater for use on the garden. Since rainwater has not been treated with chemicals such as chlorine it is better for plants than tap water. In addition, the use of water butts decreases the demands on mains water supplies so it is an especially good investment to make in areas which have low water pressure. TREES Trees are a beautiful feature in any garden. Not only will planting a tree reduce your carbon footprint, protect against wind damage and hide fences and walls, they also provide another habitat for wildlife. Small trees and shrubs that are good for blossom and berries include rowan, crab apple, willow and hawthorn. Fruit trees support a range of native wildlife while also providing you with a delicious crop. REUSE AND RECYCLE The opportunities for finding new uses for discarded materials in gardens is endless and limited only by your imagination. For example, butter tubs and take away containers can be used as seed trays, yogurt pots can be used as beer traps for slugs, heavy cardboard can be used as a weed suppressing mulch and plastic bottles make excellent mini cloches to protect seedlings from harsh winds. Buckets and even old boots make for interesting planters while coconut shells can be used as bird feeders. CDs and DVDs can be used as bird-scarers in areas which suffer from birds eating your crops and
old tyres can be used to protect young shrubs and delicate plants from winter winds. Pallets can be used to build compost bins and if you are handy with a saw and hammer there are YouTube videos galore on how to create planters and garden furniture from them.
Hopefully this article will have provided you with some food for thought but even if the current surge in interest to tend to our gardens wanes it will hopefully help to change views on how food should be produced. The current crisis has already highlighted the value and security provided by local short chain food supplies. When people start learning about the food system through the act of gardening it should lead to an understanding of the effects of industrial growing on wildlife and of the seasonality of food. People may be less likely to waste food once they realise the work involved to produce it and more appreciative of the challenges that farmers face in growing our food. Tá tearmainn mar choimirce shláinte (health protection) i gcroílár na h-insinte, agus mar bharr air sin, eachtraítear an scéal i gcomhthéacs Fhliú Spáinneach 1918 a sciob 23,000 Éireannach, ach, go míórúilteach, a d’fhág gach aoinne laistigh de thearmainn an scéil seo slán.

Finscéal na dTrí Thobar i gCinn Aird Bhí trí thobar beannaithe i gCinn Aird Thiar, agus tugtaí turais timpeall orthu go féiltiúil – Tobar Fhíonáin, Tobar Mhuire agus Tobar Mhichíl. Leanann finscéal na toibreacha úd, mar leanas – nuair a bhí Naomh Mícheál agus Naomh Fíonán ag teacht ón Sceilg chuir ceo amú iad agus ní raibh fhios acu cá rabhadar nuair a thánadar i dtír ar Thráig Chathail (Béal Chinn Aird). Chuadar fé dhéin an chnoic agus bhí an tart ag goilliúint orthu agus gan braon uisce le fáil. Ghuíodar chun Dé is Muire uisce a sholáthar dóibh, agus do ghluais tobar álainn fíor uisce fé chosaibh gach duine acu ag bun an chnoic ansúd, agus d’óladar a sáith. Ansan dúirt Fíonán: ‘Anois ó thug Dia an tabhartas so dúinn, cuirimse fém thearmainn gach a bhfuil ó abhainn go farraige agus ó chnoc go tráigh, agus gach duine a thiocfaidh fém thearmainnse, ní bhéarfaidh a namhaid go deo air, agus ní lú ná caillfear le pláigh é.’ Is sin mar a bhí – nuair a bhí fliú mór 1918 ag treascairt na ndaoine ar fud na dúthaí, níor cailleadh leis an bhfliú úd aoinne laistigh de Thearmainn Fhíonáin.
Legend of Kinard Holy Wells Traditionally, there were three holy wells in Cinn Aird Thiar, and rounds were paid seasonally at all three of them – Tobar Fhíonáin, Tobar Mhuire and Tobar Mhichíl.
Tobar Mhuire Chinn Aird, Pic: Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh
A legend is associated with the wells as follows: Two holy men – St. Finian and St. Michael lost their way in heavy fog while travelling by sea from Sceilg Mhichíl. When they landed at the Béal by Kinard Strand they did not know where they were. Parched, they trekked up-hill from the beach in urgent search of water, praying to God and Mary as they went. Eventually, they came to a stream of glistening water at the foot of the hill and drank their fill. At this point, Fíonán declared that from then on the surrounding area, from hill to sea and from river to shore, would be a safe haven from enemies and from plague. And so it was. As thousands of people were stricken with the Flu Pandemic of 1918, nobody died of that flu within Finian’s sanctuary.
Stair na dTobar i gCinn Aird Thar am, tiomnaíodh trí thobar don dtriúr beannaithe úd, agus cuireadh cóiriú orthu de réir a chéile, mar leanas, i) Cuireadh cros os cionn Thobar Fhíonáin (crois atá fós ann) i 1918, ii) Tógadh Grotto Mhuire i 1938 ag Ághasach mar chomhartha buíochais as beannachtaí a bronnadh air; iii) I 2019 athchóiríodh Thobar Mhuire fé stiúir ag Coiste Pobail Lios Póil, agus deineadh é d’aththiomnú le linn na Féile agus an phaidir seo ar ár mbeolaibh againn: A Mhuire na Féile ’sé seo ár nguí, go dtagaimid slán ón uile phlá. 20 West Kerry Live

Milltown Castlemaine GAA JOHN BURKE It was with great sadness that members of the Milltown/ Castlemaine GAA club learned of the sudden death of club stalwart and current President John Burke. Coming from a footballing stronghold of Ballygamboon Lower, Castlemaine, that also included his brothers Jim and Willie (RIP), John was a powerful footballer who represented Milltown/ Castlemaine, Mid Kerry, South Kerry and Kerry with distinction. Winning Mid Kerry Championships in 1957, 61 and 62 brought John to the attention of the Kerry set up and he played with both the Kerry seniors and Kerry juniors in the early 60’s. His work in the Dept. of Agriculture brought him to Mayo and South Kerry before he settled in Rathpook, Milltown and after his playing days finished, he took to the clubs administration side. Long before Executives existed, John WAS the executive and as chairman he oversaw the club capture its first county title, when they won the County Novice in 1979. We are especially proud of all those from our very own club who risk their lives every day to provide the necessary services and ensure the sick and vulnerable get the best possible care. A retired teacher, Kitty O'Meara, from the city of Madison, in Wisconsin, turned to writing in an effort to curb her own anxiety amid the news of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is her prose poemoffering hope that something good can come out of this collective state of "together, apart." ‘And the people stayed home’ And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised and made art, and played games and learned new ways of being and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently. And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal. And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed. Roast Shoulder of Lamb with Lemon and Garlic Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School very Mediterranean; they give this dish such a beautiful flavour and aroma.
Ingredients 1 whole shoulder of lamb, boned (or leg of lamb) 2 lemons zested and juiced 6-7 cloves of garlic minced or chopped finely The tradition of having lamb during the Easter period dates back to pre-biblical times. Throughout Europe it also marks the new season for lamb, however the fantastic hill lamb that we have available to us on the peninsula is as it’s best later in the year. That is still no reason not to have lamb for Easter especially from our local butchers; hill lamb is without doubt one of the finest foods available in Ireland. The distinctive flavour of this lamb is due to their diet of wild herbs, grass, hill flowers and heathers all of which will have a subtle sea-salt taste due to the proximity to the sea and sea-air. I have used shoulder of lamb for this recipe, which is such a great cut of meat and is perfect for slow cooking. It is best to order the shoulder ahead of time, but this will work well with a leg of lamb too. If you are using the leg keep the temperature the same but the cooking time will be around 30 minutes less. Remember you are cooking at a lower temperature than normal. This will allow to you to slow it down and it will help to keep the meat juicy. The addition of lemon, garlic and herbs is

pepper. Rub all of this mixture generously all over the lamb getting into all the parts where you have scored. Place this on a large tray and cover well with foil. Place it in the oven and cook for around two hours. Remove the foil and continue to cook allowing the lamb for a further 40 minutes (cook for another 20-30minutes if you want it well done). Remove it from the oven once the meat is cooked as you like it. Make sure to rest the meat well for about 40 minutes in a warm place.

Film Review The Mandalorian Tom Ó Neachtain The entire planet is bored at the moment, so it seems that Disney+ couldn’t have come to Europe at a better time. Disney+ is the new streaming service that contains all the films and TV shows that belong to Disney. Following a ferocious buying splurge they now own Pixar, National Geographic, Star Wars, Marvel and 21st Century Fox. The main new show that they’ve been pushing is their original Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. The Star Wars films barely limped over the finish line by the end, but at least this show has some fresh creative steam behind it. This is an eight-part series and to date they have released four episodes in Ireland. The Mandalorian himself is a bounty hunter working in the criminal underbelly of the Star Wars universe. 26 West Kerry Live

Lynne 087-1309803 The first episode establishes the time frame and characters in the story perfectly. The idea of having the main character wear a mask for the entire series (so far) is a risky one, but I think it’s paying off. Pedro Pascal incorporates great body language and a good voice to anchor the story with a great protagonist. The Star Wars franchise has always relied heavily on great practical effects but in this series they put it to the forefront. The fourth episode has a noticeable dip in quality but I’m still keen to see how the rest of it plays out. Many of the seminal sci-fi franchises have left their best days behind them but The Mandalorian shows that Star Wars have some stories left to tell. It’s good entertainment at a time when we’ve never needed it more. Tom Ó Neachtain is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne

Returning to live in Ireland with a de facto partner Question My son has lived in the US for the past 10 years. He is planning to come back to Ireland in a few months. He is in a long-term relationship. His partner wants to move to Ireland with him, and hopefully find work here. She is American, and they have heard that she can’t stay in Ireland unless they are married. Is this true? What do they have to do before they come? Answer Your son’s partner may be able to live and work in Ireland as the de facto partner of an Irish citizen (your son). However, to do so she needs permission from Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) – formerly called the Irish Immigration and Naturalisation Service, or INIS. Your son’s partner will need to show that she and your son have been living together for at least 2 years, and have a mutual commitment to a shared life together to be considered as being in a de facto partnership with an Irish citizen. De facto partnership is the term used to describe a relationship that is like marriage or civil partnership in practice, but not in law.
Once these criteria are met, your son’s partner can begin the process of applying for permission to live and work in Ireland as follows: 1. Get de facto preclearance: Before your son’s partner can travel to Ireland, she must be granted de facto preclearance. To apply she must complete the preclearance application form (pdf) and submit it with all the supporting documentation listed on the form. She must pay a non-refundable application fee of €100, and wait outside of Ireland while her application is processed. 2. Get a decision: If her application is approved, she will get a preclearance letter which is valid for 6 months. She must travel to Ireland during this period. If her application is refused, she will receive a letter explaining the reasons why. She can appeal this decision by responding to the refusal letter with extra supporting documents if required. 3. Prepare for border control: As a citizen of the US, your son’s partner can travel to Ireland without a visa. However, she will need to go through immigration control on arrival. She should tell the immigration officer at the airport
or point of entry that she plans to apply for residency in Ireland based on her de facto partnership status, and provide her preclearance letter as evidence of this. If she is permitted to enter Ireland, the immigration officer will imprint a landing stamp on her passport stipulating the permitted length of her stay (up to 90 days). 4. Get residency permission: If she is granted residency permission, she will then receive a ‘Stamp 4’ in her passport which will allow her to live and work in Ireland for the length of time stated on the stamp. 5. Register with Immigration: Your son’s partner must register in person with an Immigration Registration Office and apply for residency permission to live and work in Ireland as soon as possible after arriving in the country. She will need to provide evidence of her preclearance permission, her original passport, your son’s original passport, proof of their joint address in Ireland, and a registration fee of €300. You can find out more on bringing your non-EEA de facto partner home to Ireland on citizensinformation.ie. West Kerry Live 27

Their video can be seen at: https://youtu.be/mJ2tJZxKDfs
KDYS has launched a new initiative to provide a telephone and email support service for all parents and children across Kerry. The service was created as a direct response from the needs that the Tusla funded Tralee Springboard Family Support project and other KDYS services were hearing in the community.
KDYS are asking all young people and adults to be heroes and save lives by pledging that ‘I’m in and I’m staying in’.
The ‘On-line Club’ is aimed at secondary school aged young people but anyone can join in! The response so far has been overwhelming with requests being made by school teachers for them to make it accessible to their own pupils.
Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in Ireland, the KDYS has been constantly trying to ensure that all young people and their families in Kerry are receiving the support that they need to cope with these difficult times. Breandán Fitzgerald Covid-19 Response All GAA activity at club, inter-county and educational levels has been suspended until further notice. This includes all games, training and team gatherings at all ages and all grades. The GAA will continue to liaise with Government officials and review the situation assessing the impact of these measures on our competitions. In the meantime, the Association is encouraging all members to continue to follow the guidelines which have been provided by the health authorities. Flatten the Curve The best way to prevent the spread of Covid-19 is by us making a decision to stay at home and avoid all unnecessary travel and follow what the Health Authorities are telling us. By physically distancing ourselves by at least 2m from other people and following the medical advice – Wash - Cover - Avoid - Clean - Stop – Distance. We control ourselves, what we do, say and post so don't wait for others to lead or show you what to do. Please practice social distancing by physically distancing yourself from other people while continuing to talk on phone and online to your family and friends. Look out for your neighbours, ring them to see if they are ok and have a chat. Please be responsible in what you say and publish online and do not spread panic by sharing unverified sources of information or chain messages in WhatsApp or on your Social Media. Stay positive and have a routine which includes exercise.
