Down Memory Lane with the Young Entrepreneurs of Fybough NS. As of Monday 18th May we are OPEN FOR BUSINESS giving due regard to all the Covid best practice guidelines.

MONDAY TO FRIDAY: 10.00-5.00 SATURDAY: 10.00-2.00 Phone; 066-9151846 Email; larionad@hotmail.com

Against the odds of not being in school, the pupils of Fybough NS managed to produce the goods for their Junior €10 Entreprenuer Programme. The children had started the project a number of months ago. They came up with various ideas and prototypes and they presented them in front of a panel of dragons - Teacher Eileen Lovett, Principal A collection of stories from Catherine Ní Mhuircheartaigh and local characters compiled by local business woman - Liz O'Connor pupils of Fybough NS proprietor of the Anvil Bar. Liz also spoke to the children about the operations of a business and the pupils learned a great deal from her. The winning concept was a book which would offer accounts/stories from people living in the locality. As the students pointed out in their sales pitch 'Everyone has a story and we would like to record them so that they can be passed on to future generations. You don't have to be famous to have an extraordinary life'

Down Memory Lane 1

1

The children from 3rd class to sixth class worked as a team to produce a book entitled 'Down Memory Lane'. The book captures memories of people of all ages in and around Keel, Castlemaine. There was a lot of work involved as the children took full control over various aspects of the business under the guidance of class teacher Eileen Lovett - market research, surveys, collating results, interviewing family and community members, gathering photos, typing up the interviews, designing the book cover, advertising, photos and approaching businesses for sponsorship. School secretary Katherine O'Connor left no stone unturned and helped hugely in the interviewing phase. The school is humbled by the response and the support shown by the entire community. People were very forthcoming and only too happy to get involved and the children are incredibly proud of the end result. Unfortunatley due to school closures, the children can't have their Book Launch where the commmunity would have been invited to the school and have the opportunity to buy a copy of the book. Former Kerry footballer Pat Spilliane who also features in the book had offered to attend on the day. The school would like to thank Aidan and Eileen Benson who have kindly offered to sale to book in their shop - Bensons Quickpick. Profits from the sales will go towards a well deserved treat for the students for their hard work and resouces for the school. If anyone is intereted in buying a copy please contact: fyboughns1964@gmail.com or you can express interest in Bensons QuickPick

We are sorry that we can't offer quite the service we previously advertised as our suppliers are also locked down. But we can supply you with books if we have them in stock. Email us on books@ dinglebookshop.com, message us on Twitter or leave a voicemail on our phone number 0669152433. We check these regularly and will find a way of getting your books to you! Do not despair. Best wishes from Aideen, Jill, Camilla and Mike West Kerry Live 3

Hope Guatemala Guatemala fails its Mayan people during Corona Crisis White Flags: A Symbol of Hunger

its most disadvantaged and poorest. Similar, to the Volcanic eruption that occured in Guatemala two years ago, the indigenous communities of the country are those most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. Like the majority of the population, the indigenous earn their living through casual labour and in the informal sectors, earning only enough for their survival. At present, they are not permitted to work and therefore have no income and no state support. Indigenous communities cannot abide by the Covid-19 hygiene regulations as they do not have enough soap or access to clean water. Many cannot isolate in their homes or socially distance as they do not have their own homes, working and living on the plantations of large landowners. Survival kits for those bearing white flags “Our partner organisations SEFCA and ASECSA, with whom we have been working for many years, and have built a very strong relationship, will put together food packages and sanitation kits with the donations raised here, and distribute these in communities and along roadsides”, Eddy Dieckmann. A food package for €40 consists of corn, beans, oil, rice, salt and sugar and will help a family of five to keep reasonably nourished for two weeks.

Desperation is increasingly growing in many parts of Guatemala the longer the Corona virus crisis continues. More and more children, women and men stand at the roadsides bearing white flags which can also be seen hanging outside houses. This is a signal to humanitarian organisations that families are in dire need of food. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, families cannot work and are increasingly struggling to obtain food, not knowing how they will survive in the weeks to come. “Our friends in Guatemala sent us photos that are truly shocking and show us the extent of the situation there” Eddy Dieckmann, co-founder Hope Guatemala/Nuevo Dia. “We are calling on all our supporters to help us raise the necessary funds to provide emergency food and sanitation packs for families.” The glaring global inequalities presented once again during the Covid-19 pandemic couldn’t be more stark. While European states can provide billions in assistance to citizens, Guatemala is once again unable to support 6 West Kerry Live

A hygiene kit with soap, washing powder, chlorine, washable masks and washable plastic brushes also costs €40. We know that these are difficult times for everyone and we greatly appreciate any donation large or small that people are in a position to make, in order to support these indigenous families. Our target is €10,000 which will help to ensure the survival of those in most need. You can donate directly on our GoFundMe page: gf.me/u/x2bqfg Or over our website: http://hopeguatemala.org/donatenow.html More information on our work can be found here: http://hopeguatemala. org/index.html

Farming News Louis Murchan COVID-19 There is no point in going on about the current crisis, in our community. The only thing to say is to keep safe, follow the guide-lines (we all know them by this stage) and be careful out there. Think of the infirm, the At-Risk and the elderly, and do what you can, to assist. Don’t be selfish and buy all the chicken in the shop, or worm dose in the vets. But please, please, please, behave yourselves out there. SHEEP WELFARE YEAR 3 PAYMENTS ISSUED The balancing payments under Year 3 of the Sheep Welfare Scheme commenced recently. This is the 15% balancing payments under the Sheep Welfare Scheme and amounts to €1.82M, and is a welcome financial support at this time when farmers are facing challenging circumstances. This payment brings the total paid under Year 3 of the Sheep Welfare Scheme to €16 million to some 18,500 farmers, providing a significant financial boost to the individual farmers, the sheep sector in general and the wider rural economy. Farmers with outstanding queries are urged to respond to the Department immediately in order to facilitate payment. Payments will continue to issue on an ongoing basis as eligibility is confirmed for farmers with outstanding queries. WORLD FOOD PROGRAMME’S COVID-19 RESPONSE Unlike our Uncle Donald, across the Big Pond, our government has committed to support payments for various World bodies and agencies, to pave the way for a better future. We continue to make a significant contribution to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and The Food & Agricultural Organisation (FAO). Recently we committed €18 million to the development of a vaccine against CoronaVirus/Covid-19. And only last week we promised €23 million to the World Food Programme (WFP). Following an international request for financial support, this €23 million will help WFP to maintain its regular food assistance programmes to the people they are already supporting, while increasing their efforts elsewhere, especially in regions worst effect by a combination of Covid-19 and food scarcity. Recently the Executive Director of WFP, Mr. David Beasley stated that The WFP is grateful to the Government of Ireland for the early confirmation of its annual contribution and we appreciate the fact that this is flexible funding we can use where we need it most. WFP enjoys a strong partnership with Ireland and we look forward to continuing our work together to combat global hunger during these difficult circumstances. WFP is a United Nations organisation responsible for the delivery of food assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world, partnering with other United Nations agencies, international organizations, nongovernmental organizations, civil society and the private sector to enable people, communities and countries to meet their own food needs. WFP is the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide and is funded exclusively from voluntary contributions. This may sound like a small sum, globally, but if every prosperous country in the Civilised World made similar proportional contributions, funding would not be such an issue, and these international organisations would achieve much more. Please take note, Uncle Donald! WORM EFFECT ON LAMB PREFORMANCE Worm control is vital to achieve good lamb growth rates and a profitable sheep enterprise. Heavy worm infestation will lead to a reduction in performance, delay development and possible death. In severe cases permanent damage can occur in the gut and this will reduce nutrient absorption; therefore, worm control is a priority to minimise the effect that internal parasites may have on lamb performance. Worm larvae come from over-wintered larvae, eggs from ewes with a worm burden (spring rise) and eggs from lambs with a worm burden (autumn rise). Nematodirus [battus] is the big risk early in the season. The infective larval stage is very resilient and can survive low temperatures over the winter on pasture still within the egg. After a period of cold exposure the larva hatches once the maximum environmental temperature exceeds 10° over a period of several days. It is important to understand that this is a lamb-to-lamb 8 West Kerry Live

disease with the eggs laid in one season becoming infective and hatching the following season. There will be variation from farm-to-farm and even field-to-field, so sheep farmers are urged to assess their risk based on the history of the field. Consider the main risk factors prior to dosing: •

Are the lambs old enough to be eating a substantial amount of grass?

Are different aged groups of lambs being mixed together?

How do the lambs look? Are they clean and thriving?

What is the previous grazing history of the field that they are in? For example ‘low risk’ pasture would be a field that only grazed cattle last year.

Best practice to follow when using wormers •

It is important to dose animals based on weight. Do this by weighing a sample of the group and then set the dose rate based on the heaviest animals in the group.

If there is a wide range of weights, consider splitting the group and weighing the heaviest in each group. Under-estimation of weight is a big problem and leads to issues arising from under-dosing.

Ensure that the dosing technique is correct. Always follow the manufacturer’s advice on the use of wormers and ensure that the drenching gun is working effectively.

Be aware of anthelmintic resistance as there are a number of factors which influence the rate at which anthelmintic resistance develops within a worm population: •

Frequency of treatment;

Use of one family of anthelmintic treatment year-on-year;

Movement of livestock;

Under-dosing & exceeding Use-By date

Dosing with insufficient anthelmintic due to poorly maintained dosing equipment;

Failure to follow instructions or store properly

Using products beyond their ‘use by’ date;

Mixing anthelmintics with other products.

Adopt an effective quarantine strategy to minimise the introduction of new or resistant parasites. Don’t drench and move onto clean pasture as this is very selective for resistance; if possible return the sheep back onto their old field for a few days. As we move further into the season, optimise the use of Faecal Egg Counts (FEC). Using this method allows farmers to make an informed decision with regard to the need to dose. Finally, aim to find a balance between effective worm control and reduction in selection for resistance. Seek to maintain a worm population susceptible to wormers by reducing treatment frequency or by only treating the most susceptible individuals in a flock. If in doubt or you have concerns about the health of your flock then veterinary advice should be sought immediately. In the current Covid-19 situation, plan ahead with your supplies for all inputs required on the farm, there is no need to panic buy. BORD BIA REMOTE AUDITS: WHAT DO FARMERS NEED TO DO? Following on from a series of successful pilot audits, Bord Bia is preparing to conduct remote audits on farms under the Bord Bia Quality Assurance schemes. Noting that Covid-19 restrictions meant that on-farm visits had to be suspended back in March, with certs extended until June, extensive work has been done in the meantime to develop a system that would comply with social distancing for when this extension expires. Over 50 farms have gone through the process and apparently this has been (somewhat) successful, with good feedback from both Bord Bia aduitors and farmers alike. However, the jury is out on this, and more work needs to be done, and account must be made of those farmers who are not as techno-centric as this initial test group. Were these 50, a select few who were much more computer savvy than the average man or farmer on the

street. Approximately 90% of farmers will go through a re-certification audit and it is estimated that consistently poor performers will go through an extension audit instead, whereby instead of being re-certified for 12 months, they will receive a four-month extension to their current certificate. Those farms then would go through their normal renewal process then once that four-month extension runs out. If farmers have any issues with completing the audit, the Bord Bia help desk is ready and available to assist farmers with any problems they may have. HEN HARRIER BONUS PAYMENTS TO QUALIFYING FARMERS Almost €500,000 will be paid to farmers under the Hen Harrier Scheme. This is a dividend payment as part of a €25m local Initiative Scheme. Last year was a very successful one for hen harriers - the 56 confirmed pairs in the six Special Protection Areas (SPAs) reared at least 81 chicks. This was the highest number for 14 years. The gains were most pronounced in Kerry where one pair raised an almost unprecedented five chicks. The purpose of the programme is to examine new approaches to farming for conservation with farmers being paid for improving the natural habitat to deliver defined environmental objectives. The Hen Harrier Programme encourages farmers to develop new and existing habitats. Over €3m in habitat payments have been paid to farmers over the last six months. This bonus payment is based in improvements to habitat areas and recognises and rewards farmers for their work.

Certainly a reminder for our politicians and various authorities such as IDA, County Council and Údarás to promote different employment opportunities in the Peninsula. CÚL CAMPS. The most recent news from Croke Park is the they still hope to organise the annual summer Cúl Camps for under age players so hope on the horizon for all the young people mad to get actice on the playing fields again.

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland Covid-19 has re-set tourism ‘back to the future’ with the added benefit of hindsight. Times have changed dramatically for all of us and to begin, a heartfelt “Thank you” to our front line medical teams and carers who have shown such extraordinary courage and resilience at this time, our community supports and volunteers, our Gardaí, our local supermarket teams and all who have been involved in ‘minding and supporting’ our communities and peninsula.

Gáirdín Mhuire Centre Green Street, Dingle

To all our tourism businesses across the Dingle Peninsula who immediately did the right thing in closing their doors even though their livelihoods had been turned upside down – a sincere thank you too in encouraging visitors not to come to the Dingle Peninsula which is the very opposite to our normal and natural world famous welcome and hospitality. Over the last two months we have had time, to take some time, to appreciate the magical place we live in, reflect on how things were, get out and enjoy our spectacular landscape, and now, as the country begins to re-open slowly, start thinking of how do we re-open when it is safe to do so? What will our tourism future look like - both immediately in Covid-19 times but also, as part of the bigger picture – the longer-term picture? What will the Dingle Peninsula look like as a tourism destination in 2, 5, 10, 20 years’ time? What is the legacy that we want to leave for future generations? This is a good time to start the conversation…………

Come for Dinner...

For today, the focus of Tourism Talk and Thoughts is on how we work together to support each other as we tread carefully into the future. The balance must be on minding our businesses, our environment and most importantly, our communities. Following the Guidelines as set out by our Government is essential and so, to follow are some recommendations to help you plan and prepare over the coming weeks – these recommendations are for all business particularly, tourism and retail but specific industry requirements will follow Dinner as they become clearer over the coming weeks as many are still at proposal stage. However, this is where you can start: • “The Return to Work Safely Protocol which is designed to support employers and workers to put measures in place that will prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace when the economy begins to slowly open up, following the temporary closure of most businesses during the worst phase of the current pandemic. The Protocol should be used by all workplaces to adapt their workplace procedures and practices to comply fully with the COVID-19 related public health protection measures identified as necessary by the HSE: https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/22829a-return-to-work-safely-protocol/”;

Due to Covid 19 - Coronavirus restrictions Gairdín Mhuire Hairdresser Day Care Centre is Art temporarily closed.

• Fáilte Ireland will be publishing this week the new Protocols that will become a legal obligation for all businesses. This document will be available for viewing on https://www.dingle-peninsula.ie/stories-from-the-dinglepeninsula/240-covid-19-members-portal.html. Social Distancing, Sanitizer requirements and more, are here to stay for the foreseeable future and so businesses, in the meantime, if you have not already done so, should start visualising what your business will look like when you re-open. Get out the arts and crafts set and plot out distances, sanitizer locations, key risk touch points – entrances, corridors, toilets, etc. Identify the “Risk” locations which Acupuncture will be required for your Risk Assessment Report and take photos as you go as these will be good to add to reports too;

Why Asparagus is so Hot Right Now!

a special trait although any food that nourishes the blood vessels and circulation will also be beneficial to sexual health, particularly for men.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Young seasonal asparagus requires very little preparation or cooking. The thinner the stems the quicker it cooks. It is best steamed for a few minutes in a little water standing upright with the thicker ends in the water. This way the tender spear heads are just lightly steamed and impart loads of flavour, while the thicker stem ends get a good cooking. Asparagus is also delicious sautéed in a little butter and fresh herbs. When you buy asparagus, just break off about an inch or two from the end, rinse and wrap the stems in kitchen paper and store in the fridge. Asparagus will keep in the fridge for days and even longer if you place the stems upright in jar leaving the ends in a little water to prevent them drying out. Enjoy! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Nutrition Clinic & Healing Rooms, Dingle 086 1662562 - Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com

Let’s take a break from Covid-19 this week and check out what has been happening in the vegetable plots and supermarket aisles while we were locked down! New season asparagus are about to make their season debut and the excitement on the ground is palpable! With not much else happening around town, this is an event you can really sink your teeth into! Asparagus has enjoyed an almost lofty reputation since it was first depicted in Egyptian wall art around 3,000 BC. A revered plant among the Roman upper classes, Greek botanists and early medicine practitioners, asparagus continues to hold its head up high today and is widely available to all people, no matter their standing in the community! Perhaps its spearlike shape gives it an air of superiority or maybe the celebrity chefs made it “all fancy” – whatever the reason, there is a lot to be celebrated once those shoots emerge from the ground and the short-lived asparagus season begins! In Ireland home-grown asparagus is at its best from the first week of May to the middle of June - roughly 40 days and nights of pure asparagus joy! Local veg grower, Sophie Seel (from Dúil sa Dúlra) informs me that the season can begin a little later for more westerly counties, so be patient! As the season comes to an end, the spears begin to open and the stems tend to get woody and tough. Like any vegetable, true to its season, asparagus’ timely appearance prepares the body for the bounty of heartfriendly Summer foods that will shortly be in great supply. Rich in rutin, a bioflavonoid, this nutrient strengthens our capillaries and has been used to help lower blood pressure, treat haemorrhoids and varicose veins as well as prevent and treat venous leg ulcers. Another nutrient, folate, much discussed in the media recently, is also in rich supply - a 100g serving of asparagus provides a whopping 67% of our daily requirement. Folate is required to complete red cell formation, reduce levels of homocysteine in the blood and supports the entire nervous system. For women of childbearing age, folate is well-known for its role in preventing neural tube defects in newborns. Other nutrients of significance include vitamins A, C, E and K, dietary fibre and some minerals. Asparagus is quite the hero in the gut too providing a special type of fibre, called Inulin, in great quantity! Inulin fibre, also known as a prebiotic, does not get broken down in the first segments of the intestinal tract, but makes it way undigested to the large intestine. Once there, it becomes an ideal food source for beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacilli and Bifidobacteria. A healthy colony of such bacteria is associated with better nutrient absorption, lower risk of allergy and lower risk of colon cancer. Most of the vitamin K provided by asparagus as with other greens is in fact created by friendly bacteria in the large intestine – we provide for them and they provide for us, perfect synergy! Vitamin K, most noted for its role in the clotting mechanism is also vital for bone and cardiovascular health. With the asparagus season comes the age-old debate as to whether or not asparagus produces a funny smell in urine. There is some evidence that sulphur containing compounds may be attributed to the odour, but it is far from conclusive and should not deter from enjoying it while it is in season. Furthermore, who knows, perhaps asparagus just gives us a greater sense of smell, either way, why is anyone smelling their pee? Another notable claim to fame is its aphrodisiac power, again, no real evidence and hopefully it has nothing to do with the pee smell. Saying that, Marcel Proust, a famed French novelist in the 19th century claimed that asparagus “had the effect of transforming his humble chamber pot into a bowl of aromatic perfume” – not sure if the ladies would agree! The aphrodisiac effect of asparagus is more likely due to its suggestive shape rather than 12 West Kerry Live

From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Eleven lost off Brandon Creek

From – Belfast Commercial Chronicle, 25 November 1826 A Scottish brig, from Greenock, left Tralee on Monday, November 20th, bound for Liverpool with a cargo of corn and butter. Her crew consisted of eleven people, ten men and a boy. At some time during that night or early on Tuesday morning she was wrecked at a place called Cousavodig, between Brandon Head and Smerwick harbour. The vessel and all hands were lost. During a search of the area the coastguard recovered some firkins of butter.

Died in Dingle Harbour

From – Kerry Evening Post, 31 May 1873

A tragedy occurred in Dingle harbour last Sunday in which one man lost his life. A group of seven men and a boy set off on a pleasure trip around the harbour in a small sailing vessel. The wind was strong and as they neared the northern side the boat was capsized by a sudden squall, close to the shore, and sank in shallow water. Some of the men swam ashore while others clung to the boat’s mast which was still showing above the water. Several local boats rushed to the scene, including the coastguard vessel, and recovered those still clinging to the mast but one of the men was dead. His name was James McDonnell and he leaves a wife and four children.

Wrecked ship’s cargo

From – Kerry Evening Post, 2 February 1859 A large amount of timber was seen floating around Dingle bay last Friday morning. A local canoe, the Blackbird, managed to take some sizeable pieces in tow but had to cut one loose just outside the entrance to Dingle harbour because of heavy seas. A coastguard, who was on day-watch duty on Beenbawn Head reported seeing other large balks of timber being carried by the wind and tide towards Inch strand. The fishing smack St. Dominic picked up some deal planks in the bay. It is thought the timber came from a recent shipwreck on the Blasket Islands.

Annascaul moonlighters in court From – Bridport News, 23 March 1888

Three men appeared at Cork assizes charged with breaking into the home of Dr. Kane in the village of Annascaul, County Kerry, and demanding guns. The three were Michael Kearney, John Buckley and Denis Donoghue. The court was told that when the doctor refused to hand over arms shots were fired but nobody was injured. Dr. Kane and his family were badly beaten in an ensuing struggle. The three men were convicted of moonlighting. Buckley was sentenced to six months hard labour while Donoghue received seven years penal servitude. Kearney was acquitted.

Shocking death of Dingle merchant

From – Saunders’s News-Letter, 3 October 1806 The much respected Dingle merchant Mr. James McKenna died tragically in late September. While supervising the operation of a recently installed large bolting machine his coat became entangled in the machine’s main cogwheel and he was dragged into its inner workings. He was shockingly lacerated and suffered instant death. He leaves three small children and a wife who is expecting their fourth child.

Wrecked at Rossbeigh

The name of the vessel is still unknown but it is believed she came from the West Indies as the greater part of her cargo of rum and cotton is now scattered about the bay.

Hundreds protest at Dunquin funeral

From – Statesman and Dublin Christian Record, 28 March 1843. A crowd, estimated at between four and five hundred people, gathered at a funeral service, in the parish of Dunquin, to prevent the burial of a man who had been washed of rocks in Dunquin, while gathering mussels, and was drowned. The dead man was Michael Kevane, a Catholic who had been converted to the Protestant faith. The arrival of a force of police and the coast guard allowed the Rev. Thomas Goodman and the Rev. Charles Gayer to proceed with the burial service. This was the second attempt in two weeks to conduct such a service. A previous attempt by the Rev. Mr. Sandiford resulted in his being assaulted and forced to abandon the ceremony.

Eight drowned and Dingle murder.

From – Hibernian Journal, 17 April 1775

Last week a boat carrying provisions capsized and sank while nearing the town of Tralee. Her crew of eight were drowned. On the same day in Dingle four men attacked and murdered a Mrs. Fitzgerald and escaped with two of her watches, one of them gold and the other silver.

From – Kerry Evening Post, 16 March 1831

On Saturday last a large ship, apparently in great distress after losing her mizzen mast, was seen being driven up Dingle Bay in the height of the hurricane from the westward. She made every effort to enter Dingle harbour but, owing to her disabled condition, she failed to gain the entrance and was driven to leeward up the bay. Several local vessels attempted to go to her assistance but could not go outside the harbour due to powerful winds and raging seas. The vessel was driven on shore at Rossbeigh during the night where there could be no chance of saving the ship or its cargo but her crew managed to get ashore without loss.

Cruinniú na nÓg

But children and young people need an outlet for their creativity, perhaps now more than ever, and online events make that possible.” A number of art forms are represented in the Cruinniú na nÓg programme – dance, poetry, film and visual arts. Dance For DisDance, Catherine Young will curate a series of fun upbeat on-line dance workshops in the run up to the day. Via online Zoom workshops on Tues June 2nd and 9th, young people will learn a piece of choreography created from a variety of different dance styles and finally through a series of improvisation techniques will be encouraged to work towards making their very own dance piece. This will be an energetic fusion of contemporary dance, hip hop and African dance styles led by Jade O'Connor.

Cruinniú na nÓg is Ireland's national day of free creativity for children and young people. This year Creative Ireland and Kerry County Council are doing things differently and everything needed for a fantastic day of creativity is available online. “We are delighted to be working with wonderful artists, who are fully committed to their art forms and to sharing it with young people,” says Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer with Kerry County Council. “These are very different circumstances to last year, and how we thought it would be this year. 16 West Kerry Live

Poetry Máire Holmes is leading a creative project called Present Day Poetry – Kerry. She intends to have a poetry collection available to read online by the 13th June 2020. Budding poets, from the very young up to the age of eighteen are invited to write a poem and send it to arts@kerrycoco.ie. Poets have a choice of three themes: MAKING: DOING: CREATING. The poem can be as long or as short as you want and the closing date for submission is June 1st.

This can be very simple, it can be funny, about a real event or an imaginary one. Following the selection process we will contact you to let you know if you have been selected to participate. Get in touch with Mieke at info@miekevanmechelen. com Visual Art Me and the Moon will host an online workshop where children and young people will have the opportunity to make their own sketchbooks at home using basic materials. Sketchbooks can be a tool in understanding and expressing feelings relating to current events, or just as a tool in escapism. Different binding techniques, as well as ways of personalising each sketchbook to make it unique, will be explored. This will be a learning experience and hopefully the workshop will inspire young people to continue the practice of keeping a sketchbook for years to come. For more details on all the above events, please email arts@kerrycoco.ie or call 066 7183541.

Small Changes: Recycling A trip to the recycling centre is the type of activity that might make you feel that you should qualify for an honorary Greenpeace membership for your services to the environment. Perhaps this is because separating rubbish requires a little more effort than throwing everything into the general waste bin or because we have been persuaded that we are doing ‘our bit’ for the environment by recycling. The reality is that the process of sorting, processing and recycling produces greenhouse gas emissions and as a means of dealing with materials it is preferable only to landfill and incineration. Recycling should be considered the last resort if you have been unable to avoid single use items, reduce consumption or reuse/ repurpose the waste. However, until a global focus is placed on waste prevention recycling will be an important waste management option. Recyclable rubbish is normally a tradable commodity but the global recycling market has not yet recovered since its collapse in 2017 when China stopped accepting 24 categories of solid waste including plastics (95% of all recyclable plastic from Ireland used to be exported to China). The value of waste sold is dependent on its level of contamination. As companies who trade in rubbish are increaingly fussy about what they will accept it is more important than ever to recycle well. In a 2017 survey of 1,300 Irish people, 95% of respondents said that they recycled their waste but 53% of those surveyed were not entirely sure of what can and cannot go in the recycling bin while 65% did not know that as little as one piece of contaminated waste could ruin a whole bin and condemn it to landfill. These statistics should not be unexpected when you consider the bewildering array of recycling symbols on packaging in addition to the confusion caused by the varying recycling capabilities of different countries so packaging that may be readily recyclable in Germany for example might not be accepted in Irish recycling facilities. It is therefore not surprising that approximately 87,000 tonnes of nonrecyclable materials including soiled nappies, medicinal waste, hazardous waste and food end up in Irish recycling bins annually and contamination of recyclable materials can be as high as 36%. So is there an easy way to know how and what to recycle? WHAT GOES INTO THE GREEN BIN?

Such was the confusion of what can and cannot be placed in the green bin that the Irish Waste Management Association agreed on a comprehensive and very specific list of items that are accepted from Irish households for recycling. This list can be downloaded from recyclinglistireland.ie and it is highly recommended that all householders print out and consult this list if in doubt as to whether any specific material can be placed in your recycling bin or EcoSense bag. If an item is NOT on this list (even if it states it is recyclable remember the recycling information may apply to the country of manufacture) it does NOT belong in the green bin. Cardboard, papers (not shredded paper or till receipts), plastic bottles and rigid plastic packaging, Tetra Pak cartons (e.g. milk cartons), aluminium cans & trays (not including aerosol cans) and steel cans are all acceptable materials for the household green bin and that is pretty much it! While materials such as glass, batteries, waste electrical and electronic goods including lightbulbs, ink cartridges, clothing & textiles and wood are all recyclable or reusable they should never be placed in the household recycling bin. Instead they should be separated and brought to the appropriate facility i.e., bottle bank for glass, clothes bank or charity shop for textiles, civic amenity centre or exchange when purchasing new for WEEE, refill shops for used ink & toner cartridges (or donate to a charity such as the ISCPA or Crumlin Children’s Hospital) and most large supermarkets have a facility for accepting used batteries (although rechargeable batteries are a much better option!). A full list of all recyclable 18 West Kerry Live

materials and where best to recycle them is available on www.mywaste.ie. Plastics cause particular confusion for most people. Very basically if you can easily scrunch a piece of plastic up in your hand it is considered a soft plastic and it is NOT currently recycled in Ireland. Examples of soft plastics include clingfilm, bubble wrap, baby food pouches, biscuit wrappers, plastic bread bags and grocery bags. Most people are surprised to discover that the wrappers on all Cadbury, Mars and Nestle confectionary are NOT recyclable at present in Ireland (metallised plastic) and neither are crisp packets and Pringles tubes (although it is worth noting that a private recycling business called TerraCycle has teamed up with Walkers crisps and Pringles to create a free recycling scheme for all crisp packets which also offers an opportunity to fundraise for a school or charity; www. terracycle.com>en-IE). Disposable coffee cups are not currently recyclable in Ireland. The recyclable logo on many of these refers to hard plastic lid and cardboard sleeve and not the actual cup, the interior of which cannot be recycled. The exception is compostable coffee cups but these should be placed in the brown waste bin and not the recycling bin. Rigid plastics are recyclable in Ireland and these include shampoo containers and cleaning bottles, water and fizzy drink bottles, yogurt pots, butter tubs and containers for fruit and veg such as the blue plastic trays mushrooms are often packed in. A lot of food packaging uses more than one type of plastic, one of which may be recyclable while the other is not. For example, a fizzy drink or water bottle is recyclable but the plastic wrapper with name and details of the product is not; plastic meat trays are recyclable but the cling film or plastic air tight film on top is not and these should be separated before being placed in the recycling bin. Black plastic such as those used to package many salad meats is recyclable but can be problematic for sensors in recycling plants as it is sometimes not recognised against the conveyor belt. While it is not accepted as recycling waste in many countries it is currently approved for the green bin in Ireland. CLEAN, DRY & LOOSE If all this information is a bit overwhelming then doing your best and adhering to the clean, dry and loose mantra as advocated by all recycling companies and waste management facilities is your best bet. CLEAN- means free of ALL food and grease residues. Take away cardboard pizza boxes can be recycled for example but only if they are free of food residues (if contaminated then place it in the brown bin). Tin foil can also be recycled (scrunch up in a ball) but again it must be free of any debris. Aside from the fact that materials need to be presented clean and sorted to reach their maximum value on the global market, recycling plant staff are not going to entertain sorting waste covered in curry sauce, raw meat juices, etc. DRY- Wet and dirty paper and cardboard cannot be recycled as water weakens the fibres decreasing their value. Liquids in particular contaminate nearby materials and can potentially render a full bin lorry of recyclable materials useless and fit only for landfill. LOOSE- Full bags of rubbish are removed from conveyor belts and go straight for incineration or landfill. It is also important not to fill one recyclable with another e.g. don’t fill a cardboard box with lots of other recyclable materials as this makes it difficult to separate them. Genuine mistakes are always going to be made; it is difficult to tell compostable plastic apart from regular plastic for instance or you might forget to remove the plastic window from an envelope. These can be rectified by trained sorting staff but only if the waste is in an acceptable clean state to begin with.

Internet problems, forms to be filled, corona stress can all be very wearing. Many problems are bigger and more difficult to sort out in the current circumstances. While the kindness we experience all around us makes a big difference it's also good to stop and develop habits for relaxing the mind and body. Some people listen to ambient music or take deep relaxation breaks with yoga nidra practices. There is a free app for the smartphone called Insight Timer. You can download guided relaxation exercises there. Sometimes it's good to simply sit down and listen to the breeze and the birds' cacophony of sounds. We are closer to nature's pattern at this time as we stay in our own 5km patches. It thrills me to hear the grasshopper warbler making its wonderful whirring sound in the mornings and through the night. The sound is a bit like an oldfashioned manual egg or cream whisk. The bird sends its voice in different directions so you won't guess where it is. David G.Haskell has written a lovely essay about listening to birdsong. Here is the Corca Dhuibhne version of the exercise he sets us.

1. Sonic Diversity / Eagsúileacht Sonach Sit or lie in a good spot and listen to nature's sounds, birdsong in particular, as if you are at a concert; hearing the variety of cadences, pitches, rhythms and quirky sounds. (Crows can be so comical). Enjoy them, and the quiet spaces between sounds. 2. Rhythms and Change/ Athrú Poirt How do sounds change with time - from a week ago, a minute ago, when the weather is damp, at dusk? What are the stories behind those changes? What sounds will we remember? 3. Physicality / Fisiciúlacht How does place affect what we hear - the tall tree, a little valley, the open bog (our hearts rising with the lark), a sheltered garden in town? In what way do other sounds like water lapping, a machine mowing or a breeze blowing affect how we hear the birdsong? 4. Names / Ainmneacha Name the five most common birds around you. Try five more; make the names up if you like. We have wonderfully descriptive words in Irish like banaltra na gcuach, Jonaí an scrogail, gabhlán gaoithe. 5. Share/ Roinn led cháirde Tell others what you hear. Share your observations. As David so beautifully says ' you will stitch strands of bird language into the weave of human conversation'. Tá saibhreas iontach le fáil ann. - Úna Ní Shé Sponsored by West Kerry Mental Health Association 20 West Kerry Live

Just before the Covid 19 crisis hit, costume designer Elizabeth Harkin returned home to Doonsheane, Dingle after 12 years in London. In her time in the industry she has worked for Disney , LucasFilm , the BBC and others. Now she has joined up with the Sew Scrubs for Ireland initiative. The Sew Scrubs project was recently founded by Sinead Lawlor in response to the crisis, whereby a community of skilled volunteers make scrubs for frontline staff. Last week Elizabeth was sent 200 metres of fabric, which she cut into 90 sets of scrubs which in turn will be delivered to local sewing experts and ICA members in Dingle, Annascaul, Brandon, Castlegregory , Valentina, Listowel, Ballybunion, Tralee and Kilcummin. This effort is being organised and supervised by Collette Dalton the Kerry ICA President and Liz O'Leary the Annascaul ICA President . Once the sets are completed they will be donated to University Hospital Kerry, West Kerry Community Hospital , St Louis in Tralee and other nursing homes in the county. Normally a set of scrubs retails at between €50-60. The project is dependent on the generosity of the public and to enable this voluntary work to continue a go fund me page has been set up. https://www.gofundme.com/f/sew-scrubs-for-ireland

Annascaul Walks Committee 2020 RADIO KERRYWIDE: THE DINGLE TRAIN Kerrywide on Radio Kerry on Sunday 10th. May featured a wonderful programme on The Dingle Train from the archives. Back in the early 1990's The Tralee Dingle Railway line reopened a section from Tralee to Blennerville to the public and once again passengers and tourists travelled out to Blennerville on the Train. The 3T engine carriage was restored to perfect working condition, thanks in no small way to our own local Mechanical Engineer, John Deane who was the driver on the train. John gave a great interview on the programme recalling his many memories helping Jack O Leary Station Manager at Camp, who was married to his Aunt, Molly. Michael O'Shea told the story of the accident at Curraduff bridge in 1893 and how a local man named Finn saw the accident happening from his doorstep and alerted the neighbours of the tragedy. There is some great songs and music too, Joe Curran from Annascaul and Tracy O'Neill and Chriss Bulman singing and Mike O'Neill and Mary Fitzgerald among others telling more stories and Bríd Ní Mhoráin reciting The Dingle Train written by Annascaulman Teddy O'Donnell. Séan Hurley well done, Thank you, keep up the good work ! entertaining people all over the world in unusual times for many people ! A great programme worth listening to - Check it out on Podcast on Radio Kerry.

Cheltenham, UK. Camp was the ancestral home of the Cahill family, who left Tonakilla in the last century for Northern Ireland. The family came back every summer on holidays, staying in O Sheas Guesthouse, now O'Dwyers Camp Cross. Many of us have fund memories of those holiday visits. In a poignant tribute to Theresa her love of Camp and Kerry was recalled and her last wish to have The Rose of Tralee played at her funeral was fulfilled ending a lovely ceremony which was streamed live online. Sympathy is extended to her partner Martin, her Aunt Antoinette and all her extended family. Theresa's brother Denis and her parents predeceased her. Rest In Peace, Theresa ! QUIET REFLECTION Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine ! We live in each others shadow, we can take care of each other while staying apart.

acu, agus ag a deartháracha, Mícheál, Tomás ‘gus Dinní. Bhí gach duine acu níos treise ná a chéile.

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Fuair Seán Chráilí Ó Beaglaíoch ó Bhaile an Chaladh, bás seachtain ó shoin. Ní raibh aon chnámh leisciúil ina chorp. Feirmeóir gasta, Chaith sé tamalll i Meiriceá ach ba fhearr leis go mór a bheith i mBaile an Chaladh. Ba ó Chráilí é ó dhúchas. Mhair sé agus a bhean chéile Eibhlín agus a gclannn i mBaile an Chaladh. Ba dhuine é go raibh an- dhúil sa chaid aige. Beidh sé feasta ag tarrac an uisce [ sean –nós] dtí an dteampall go dtagann an chéad duinne eile. Maireann a bhean Eibhlín, a chlann, cháirde agus a ghaolta. Solas na bhFaitheas ag a anam cleachtúil.

An bhfuil an Samhradh gafa tharainn nó againn? Tá grian bhreá an tSamhraidh- Earraigh agus misneach a chuirfeadh gliondar ar do chroí. Tabhair fé ndeara go dtagann an saghas céanna aimsire Meán agus Deireadh Fómhair. Gaoth chruaigh Deireadh Fómhair. Gaoth anoir agus leoithne tirim a chuireann suaimhneas ar scata. Má bhíonn an t-earrrach go maith thárlódh go mbeadh aimsir bhreá an chuid eile don mbliain. Níor bhuail aon ghaoth mhór sinn ach bréistí diamhaire uaireanta. Is mó duine a déarfadh leat má bhíonn deireadh an Earraigh sochma, suamhneach, go mbeidh Meán Fhomhair amhlaidh. Is cuimhin liom san a bheith againn. Bhí aimsir ag báthadh na ngort mar ná féadfadh capall ná tarracóir dada a oibreódh ann. Ansan tharlódh aimsir chruaidh ghan anoir a fhágfadh Fómhar breá tirim agat. Uaireanta bheadh ‘samhain ‘eisceachtúil seo an barra ró thirim mar triomaíonn sé an féar agus bíonn scata dhó ‘ró -thirim’ agus ná bíonn puinn beatha ann. Cuid don saol ná aontaí na Samhna, mar a mbíodh sé chruaidh sláintiúil. An ceann eile ná Aonach na dTúrcaithe. Ambaic agus go mbíodh suas le céad turcaí ar díol agus ag scata bheadh seachtó nó ochtó turcaí agus fágtaí cinn nó mar sin ‘ge baile le breith na n-ubh agus don Nollaig agus don na blianta chugainn. Bhí galar a chuirfeadh siar go mór ar shaol an turcaí. Bhí púdar ann a chaithfeá anuas ortha i mboscai móra. Deirtí gur sort piast a bhíodh ina scrogall. Is minic a cuirtí ribe as eirbeall chapaill agus thugadh san piast ar barra. Ba dhóigh leat gur sort gréasaí fear nó bean na ribí. Ar theacht an phúdair ar an margadh chuaidh móran do lucht na dturcaithe na ribe leis an bpúdar. Ambaist ach bhodh an-éileamh ar an dturcaí beathaithe. In Uachtarlann bainne an Daingin a bhíodh na turcaithe á lomadh. Bhí daoine a bhí tofa ar fad leis an lomadh. Bheadh trí scilling as a bhfurmhnór agus naoi bpingine le fáil as an lomadh na turcaithe. Da mbeadh strachadh bainte don gceann sin agus aon cheann eile, bainfí leath do luach an turcaí as lomadh lochtach. Bhíodh an óige ag foghlaim mar go mbeadh piginí maithe le déanamh ar mar obair. Leanadh dian thart agus fonn thobac scata. Galar. Tá sé ráite ag scata ní ag Trump amháin gur iad na Sínigh a chum agus a cheap an víoras chráite le tíortha mar na Stait Aontaithe, agus ar fuaid an Domhain a cheann sú. Níl aon chrúthú ar sin ach tá an domhan scíeimhlithe go maróidh an víoras daoine i ngach cúinne dén nDomhan. Tá sé ráite gur dócha go mbeidh sé ag tabhairt fútha súid a thug a gcosa leo sa chéad iarracht ó níos cinnte na daoine a leighiseadh. Níl aon bheann aige ar theoraintí ná ar tíortha láidir.. Níl sé seo cruthaithe, nó táthar, an- ghearaid dhó, má tá, ‘sé sin é go bhfuil cógas ann a bhainfidhh do chosa-anáirde don víoras. Níl meastar go mbainfear barrthuisle as an víoras ach tá cóngas a chuirfidh moill ar am víoras tré instealladh. Bás. Fuair Pádraig Mac ‘n tSoir bás dé Sathairn seo caite. Feirmeóir agus fear a bhí i mbun lathair, siolta, bia ainmhithe, eanlaithe tís agus an bainne go mbíodh an bainne beartha a thugadh feirmeóirí abhaile le tabhairt do ghabhna agus beithíg, agus meascaithe le min éagsúil. Milltown Castlemaine GAA Fundraising for Pieta House: Míle Buíochas What an amazing weekend! Thank you to our club and community for helping us raise awareness and much needed funds, to help Pieta House carry out such vital and fantastic work. As at 1 pm on Monday last, we have raised an incredible €3,538-that is €2,538 over our initial target. 274 people walked/ran over a distance of 1,425.5 KMS. That is the equivalent of walking from our community to Paris, France!!! Incredible! It was a world wide effort with people from the four corners of Ireland along with past players/members residing around the world in London, Dubai, Boston, Sydney and Canada to name but a few. On behalf of Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Club- to everyone that walked, ran, donated or cheered people on along the way, thank you sincerely for your support, your efforts, your generosity and good will. The donation page will remain open until midweek when Pieta House will close it. Please feel free to visit the link on our FB page to donate until this time. Thank you to all the families that sent in photos/videos of their activities and their canine friends! Danny McClure from our PRO team did a super job uploading them to our FB page over the weekend which brought many smiles to our faces and uplifted our spirits. Maith thú Danny. Comhghairdeas: The stork was busy last week delivering a baby girl to our two club members Lorraine O’ Sullivan and Liam Burke. We hope your little girl will bring you lots of joy and happiness and not too many sleepless nights!! Back to Work: We wish all those who have returned to the work force every good wish as they adjust to work mid Covid. We particularly commend all those who went the extra mile ensuring necessary services were maintained over the past 8 weeks. We wish business owners every success as they strive to recover from the losses incurred during lock down. College Students: We think of all those doing exams at present and in the coming weeks. May you be rewarded for your hard work and resilience in what has been very challenging times for you and your tutors/lecturers. Field Development: We are delighted to report good news of progress in relation to our Field Development. Allman Bros. who did such a fine job on phase 1- namely our training ground has been awarded the contract for phase 2. Its fleet of machinery has arrived on site to remove all the topsoil before the draining process begins. Dramatic changes will be seen over the next 3-4 weeks with goalposts, railings, scoreboard and lights removed to make way for the realignment and laying of the new pitch.
