Gáirdíní An Dísirt le hoscailt ar 10ú Lúnasa Deineadh an-obair i nGáirdíní An Dísirt le tamall anuas. Dhear an garraíodóir clúiteach, Mary Reynolds, plean oibre do na Gáirdíní agus is iad Breda Enright, Tom Healy agus Robert Hickson a chuaigh i mbun oibre le linn tréimhse na dianghlasála i gcomhar leis an gconraitheoir Seán Moriarty. Dheineadar éacht oibre. Cuireadh mórán plandaí dúchasach agus tá breis suíocháin ann anois chun ár scíth a ligint ó am go chéile. Fágadh roinnt do na gáirdíní mar a bhíodar – chun go mbeidh breis bithéagsúlachta againn i gcroí lár An Daingin. Tá na beacha agus na peileacháin flúirseach ionntu cheana féin. Táimid fíorbhuíodh do Bhreda, Tom agus Robert agus chomh maith le Comhairle Contae Chiarraí agus an Scéim Fostaíochta Pobail Solas. Guímid gach rath ar Tom a bheidh ár bhfágaint i mí Meán Fhómhair. D’oibrigh sé go dian, dícheallach dúinn sa Díseart agus tá rian a chuid oibre le feiscint inniu againn. Is le pobal Chorca Dhuibhne na gáirdíní seo. Beidh súil againn go nglacfaidh gach éinne úinéireacht orthu. Beidh cuimhne againn ar na dúshlán a lean Páirc an Daingin a choimeád glan. Beidh fáilte roimis gach aon duine taitneamh a bhaint asta ach iarraimíd oraibh a chinntiú go dtabharfar aire cheart dóibh. Ní bheidh na turais treoraithe ar siúl sa Díseart go ceann tamaill eile.

Ó chlé - Mary Reynolds, Breda Enright, Tom Healy agus Joan Maguire, Cathaoirleach an Díseart.

Díseart Gardens to open on 10th August Much work has been done in the Díseart Gardens lately. The well known Garden Designer, Mary Reynolds, laid out a plan for the gardens early this year. Breda Enright and Tom Healy assisted by Robert Hickson working alongside contractor Seán Moriarty followed Mary’s plan and the results are astounding. This work was done during lockdown with clear Covid 19 compliance. Many native plants were planted and there is more seating now for all of us to rest or just to enjoy the surroundings. Parts of the gardens are being left alone – to allow for biodiversity in the heart of Dingle. The bees and butterflies are there already. We are all very grateful to Kerry County Council, the Solas Community Employment Scheme and especially to Breda, Tom and Robert. Tom will be leaving An Díseart in September after many years working with us. We wish him all the best. The fruit of his labour can now be enjoyed by us all. These gardens belong to the people of Corca Dhuibhne. We hope everyone will take pride in them. We remember the challenges that followed keeping the Dingle Town Park safe and clean. All are welcome to enjoy the gardens but we ask everyone to ensure that they are cared for properly. Theguided tours in the Díseart will not recommence for another while.

Cromane News Jane Casey The numbers drawn in the Cromane Gaa Lotto Draw on 22nd July were 21,25,30,32. There was no winner of the €17,400 Jackpot. Four prizes of €40 each went to : Jerome Murphy, Online Ticket. Sarah Kelly Tobin, Online Ticket. Sheila O’Shea, Killorglin - Ticket sold by Christine Casey Dominic O’Flaherty, Killorglin - Ticket sold by Patie Joy Cromane GAA SENIOR FIXTURES: County Junior FC - Group 4 (round 1): Cromane 0-13, Castlegregory 2-15 A scoring blitz of 2-5 to 0-1 in the last ten minutes gave a lopsided appearance to the final scoreline in Castlegregory today. The home side deserved the win based on their final surge but our lads should draw positives from the display, especially when you consider we were reduced to 14 men (second yellow offence) when we led by one ten minutes from the end. Cromane were well in the game heading into the last quarter, leading by one, 0-12 to 0-11 after Emmet Casey lofted over an excellent score with his left peg. However, in a game that ebbed and flowed at the seaside venue, once Castlegregory got their noses in front in the last ten minutes we couldn’t dredge up a response. In the broader view, some bad misses in the first half hurt us in the end. However, there were also some fine performances once again. Darren Houlihan had an excellent outing, surging forward with intent at every opportunity while Eanna Healy and Conor Sugrue in the full-back line were teak tough. Emmet Casey also had a fine game at wing forward. We trailed by one at the break, 0-7 to 0-8, in a half when we controlled most of the possession - especially in the latter stages of the half. Castlegregory jumped out to a 0-6 to 0-2 lead with centre-forward Jimmy O’Grady impressing. However, we battled back with some fine scores from Darren, Darragh McKeefry, and Sean O’Sullivan. In the second half, we continued in the same vein with Mikey Houlihan impressing inside. Further points from Darren (20 seconds after the restart) Sean (two frees), and that fine effort from Emmet meant we led by 0-12 to 0-11 at the second water break. The sending off arrived in the 50th minute and then the game changed dramatically. We left Castlegregory and went home via Bóthar na gCloch, arriving home with a pebble in the shoe that should annoy the players in the week

ahead: they were good enough, just not for long enough.

UNDER-12s: County League (round 1): Cromane 4-12, Laune Rangers B 5-8

We have no time to lick our wounds, as we are out again in the second round of the junior championship next weekend.

The Cromane under-12s continued their county league (phase 1) campaign on Sunday evening with a game against neighbours Laune Rangers B in Killorglin. Well done to all on a fine onepoint win, which should give them great encouragement for their remaining games.

Scorers: Darren Houlihan 0-4, Sean O’Sullivan 0-3 frees, Mikey Houlihan 0-2 (0-1 free), Emmet Casey, Darragh McKeefry 0-2 each. Team: Sean Teahan; Liam Teahan, Conor Sugrue, Shane Ahern; Cathal Crosby, Kieran O’Sullivan, Eanna Healy; Donnchadh Walsh, Finbar Casey; Danny Shea, Darren Houlihan, Emmet Casey; Darragh McKeefry, Mikey Houlihan, Sean O’Sullivan. Sub: Danny Healy for Danny Shea 50th minute. UNDER-16s: County League - Group F (round 1): Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) 3-9, Firies 3-19 The GGC under-16s started their county league campaign with an away game against Firies on Monday week last (July 20). GGC started the better and led by 0-2 to no score after five minutes, both points coming from Charlie Foley. A physically stronger Firies side then got on top and led by 0-6 to 0-5 after 20 minutes. Then came two penalties for either side. GGC goalkeeper Jamie Casey expertly saved the Firies spot-kick while Jason O’Connor’s effort went over the bar. This left the scores at 0-8 to 0-7. Firies finished the half much the stronger with two goals giving them a lead of 2-8 to 0-7 at the break. The home side continued to dominate on the resumption adding another 1-4 with only one point in reply from GGC. With 15 minutes remaining GGC trailed by 3-12 to 0-8. Then came a rousing comeback with GGC hitting three goals in five minutes. Two with clinically dispatched by Jason O’Connor before Charlie Foley goaled from GGC’s second penalty of the evening. Suddenly, there were just five points in it (3-13 to 3-8). However, Firies settled once again and hit some excellent points in the final ten minutes to run out deserving winners. An excellent fightback by our lads should give them some encouragement for the games to come in phase one and phase two of the county league. Scorers: Charlie Foley 1-4, Jason O’Connor 2-2, Noah Falvey 0-2, Brian Cahill 0-1. Team: Jamie Casey; Ross Bowell, Darragh Crosby, Matthew Naughton; Cian Lyons, Tony Óg Duffy, Brian Cahill; Liam O’Neill, Noah Falvey; Kealan O’Sullivan, Charlie Foley, Joshua O’Sullivan; Jason O’Connor, Fionn O’Sullivan, Seamus Moriarty.

Time to Give Tummy Bugs a Holiday! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Many a holiday is disrupted from a bout of gastroenteritis, commonly known as a tummy bug. Typically, the incidence of gastroenteritis is more common during the Winter months and early Spring, but it recent years some form of "tummy bug" has been doing the rounds no matter what month or season is upon us. It will be interesting to see if this pattern changes as hygiene measures, hand washing and sanitizing has become the new normal. The control measures for the typical tummy bug virus are the similar to that of the new Coronavirus. Hopefully, with all the extra washing and care, we will see less of these viruses – a silver lining to our Covid-19 cloud! Most gastroenteritis infections are caused by a virus - norovirus is the most common cause seen in adults and is the culprit for most “Winter vomiting bugs”, which in reality could be renamed to the "all year round virus", while rotavirus is most common in children. These viruses usually last between 24-48 hours and most of us get over them without much problems, although they can leave you weak and drained. Tummy bugs can also be caused by bacteria, such as E coli and salmonella or parasites, such as cryptosporidium or giardia. A bacterial or parasitic infection can last longer than 48 hours, in some cases up to 2 weeks. Most tummy bugs, regardless of cause, will have similar symptoms. However, knowing the cause can help with preventing the spread of infection as well as choosing the appropriate treatment and recovery for a particular bout of bug! Symptoms such as weakness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, raised temperature and abdominal cramps are common to all tummy bugs - but the severity of these symptoms can vary drastically and often can warrant medical attention, particularly if small children or babies are infected or those with compromised immunity such as the sick and elderly. Paying attention to risks can often prevent or minimize your exposure to these harmful bugs. Most importantly, wash hands and fingernails frequently, particularly when handling raw foods, after going to the toilet or being in contact with infected people. A change in eating practices and different foods associated with foreign travel can lead to a tummy bug so build your defenses by taking a high potency probiotic prior and during your holiday. It is also a good idea to take a probiotic supplement following a bout of gastroenteritis to replenish gut flora. Avoid contaminated water, if in doubt boil water or drink bottled water. Picnic food on warm days should be stored appropriately and avoid packing picnic foods that require refrigeration such as coleslaw, mayonnaise, certain meats, fish and eggs. Frozen and chilled items on your shopping list should be purchased last, to avoid them heating up in the car and brought home quickly and stored safely. Avoid cross contamination in the kitchen by storing raw and cooked ingredients separately, particularly meat and fish. This also applies to chopping surfaces and utensils. During a bout of gastroenteritis, the most important thing you can do is to make sure you do not become dehydrated by drinking small amounts of fluids often, particularly in the first 24 hours of symptoms. The demand for fluids are greatly increased to help flush out the offenders and to restore fluids lost through vomiting, diarrhoea and sweating. Vomiting and diarrhoea are the body's way of eliminating these invaders and it is best to allow this process but with careful monitoring to avoid 12 West Kerry Live

dehydration. Signs of dehydration include weakness, lightheadedness, decreased urination, dry skin, dry mouth and lack of tears and sweat. If in doubt, seek medical advice. Limit food intake and once diarrhoea/ vomiting has stopped, opt for plain, easily digested food such as dry toast, plain boiled rice, stewed apple. Yellow and orange foods such as apricots, sweet potato, carrots and squash are easily digested and rich in beta-carotene which is needed to regenerate the cells of intestinal lining. They are best stewed or boiled to aid recovery and build strength. Avoid milk and dairy products, caffeine, alcohol, citrus fruits, tomatoes, fatty foods or highly seasoned foods for a few days. Many foods can further irritate the stomach during and after a tummy bug and can lead to more trouble. Following an infection, battle weary tummies can be soothed by sipping chamomile tea. Another herb, Slippery Elm can also soothe inflammation, help protect and repair gut linings. Aloe vera juice is also very soothing to irritated gut linings and safe to use for babies and young children. Glutamine, 5-10g powder daily for adults, is needed to regenerate damaged gut linings and works well with slippery elm. Ginger and garlic can aid recovery so add these to broths and teas once solid food has been re-introduced. Ginger, has a long history as a digestive aid and can help ease nausea and cramps. Garlic can help eliminate intestinal parasites. Activated charcoal, in the correct dosage, may be used internally to help absorb toxic substances from the digestive tract, relieve spasms and flatulence. Take a liquid multivitamin and mineral supplement to replace lost nutrients and restore energy following a tummy bug as well as a good quality probiotic supplement to replenish gut flora. The Covid-19 crisis has firmly placed hygiene and sanitation at the top of the list for prevention of disease spread. Our continued efforts in response to Covid-19 will have a positive knock-on effect on other viral infections, both community transmissible and hospital acquired viruses. Dingle Notes

the tourist season will be in full swing until al least the end of August. We remind all accommodation providers to advise their guests to book both their food or social outlets in advance and also their transport to ensure a safe trip home after a night out.

Richie Williams AWARDS. The Travel and Hospitality Awards for this year were announced recently. The Dingle Cookery School were announced as Culinary Experience of 2020 Award winners, an acknowledgement richly deserved by this group which only went into business a few years ago. Details of their programme of events are regularly published in this newsletter. More good news for the high quality and service on offer by the catering and accommodation outlets in the Peninsula. EVENTS. The Blas na hÉireann Food Awards are scheduled to go ahead this year on the first weekend in October. However the Dingle Food Festival Committee have decided to cancel this year's street programme following consultation with the Licencing Authorities and large range of regular participants. Covid has certainly changed the way we go about our business but the health and safety of our citizens takes precedence to everything else at present. The Dingle Adventure Race and the Dingle Walking Festival are still on schedule to go ahead on the weekend of September 18th to 20th All regattas around the Peninsula as well as the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships have been deferred to 2021 as a precaution against the spread of the virus. DINGLE AQUARIUM. The Aquarium Staff request the members of the public who intend to visit their outlet to ensure they book well in advance as numbers are restricted due to the present strict social distancing guidelines. RESTAURANTS. Most of our restaurants and licenced premises who offer a food menu are now fully open but prior booking is essential as

FACE MASKS. The Business Chamber request members of the public to wear face masks in all the shops if at all possible. The staff in these outlets and in the hospitals and emergency services have selfishly provided a wonderful service over the past few months often at the risk of a danger to their own health. So it is a small price to ask to respect them and protect them in these strange times. Thank you. PARKING. Wonderful work by the County Council Management and staff in getting the extension work in the Car Park in Green Street completed this week. The park now offers spaces for 100 vehicles plus 5 spaces for disabled drivers and 4 spaces for 20 minute quick shop or drop off vehicles. The Business Chamber now request all business proprietors and staff working in the vicinity to avail of the park and free up on street spaces for shoppers especially during the peak hours. Parking vehicles on streets in the one spot for long hours each day deprives others of an opportunity to shop in the town centre and long term has a detrimental effect on employment in the area as witnessed in towns not too far from Dingle. The Green Street Car Park will we understand continue to provide free parking for the foreseeable future. TIDY TOWNS. A new sign has been erected in the Údarás side of Milltown Bridge highlighting the various species of wildlife in the immediate area of the River Basin there. Many thanks to all involved in this valuable project. It is intended to organise a talk on the wildlife and history of the Milltown River in that area within the next few weeks. We urge everybody to be litter conscious and get involved in their own area in the maintenance of the streets and estates on a regular basis. Due to covid regulations we will not be organising work evenings at present. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

Storm, wreck and shelter. From – Tralee Chronicle, 10 December 1858.

From – Tralee Chronicle, 7 May 1875

It is feared that a number of disasters have occurred off the coast of the peninsula during the recent storm. Large amounts of wreck timber have been washed up in Beenbawn, Kinard, and the Short Strand as well as in Ballydavid and Ferriter’s Cove. Some of the timber consists of highly decorative work, beautifully painted and gilded.

A vessel named Copeland Isle of West Hartlepool was sailing from Newcastle to America with a cargo of bricks and fireclay when she was abandoned last Wednesday off Kerry Head. [No reason given]. The crew of twelve took to two boats and were fortunate to be picked up yesterday by the Dingle pilot John O’Flaherty who was heading for the Tearaght Lighthouse. The rescued crew were safely landed in Dingle.

There are two Welsh schooners sheltering in Dingle harbour laden with corn. A brig named the Alabama of Gloucester, bound from Galway to Cardiff with a cargo of pitwood, was brought into Dingle harbour by the pilot John J. O’Flaherty. She had been at sea for 21 days and suffered much structural damage as well as having lost her cooking galley. [Pitwood was used to support the roofs in mines]

Dingle pilot rescues crew

Narrow escape from French frigate. From – Saunders’s News-Letter, 1 March 1782 The vessel Elizabeth, under Captain Peters, sailed from Charlestown in South Carolina on the 14th of January, bound for London, and arrived in Dingle last Sunday. She brought news that the American army was closing in on Charlestown from every side. The captain also reported that a week before the Elizabeth arrived in Dingle she was chased by a French frigate which was part of a large squadron of ships. However, the weather changed to storm conditions and the frigate abandoned the chase.

During the storm the brigantine Argonaut that was moored at the pier broke loose and was driven ashore near the harbour wall. It was fortunate that the tide was ebbing or she would have been smashed to pieces. Local fishermen gave every assistance to the stricken vessel and managed to get her afloat during the rising tide. The master thanked them for their great exertions in saving his ship. The schooner Emma, of Plymouth, was driven into Smerwick harbour during the recent gales. She was boarded by the coastguards from Ballydavid and Ferriter’s Cove. They learned from the crew that the Emma had come across a vessel named Bombay far to the westward of Ireland. They said her mainmast and her mizen mast were gone and that she was seriously disabled. They said her deck was crowded with passengers.

Hurricane and hail storm Two women killed at Milltown

From – Cork Constitution, 11 December 1832

From – Globe, 1 July 1840

Dingle and the surrounding area of west Kerry experienced a powerful hurricane last Sunday. In the midst of the storm the skies unleashed the most damaging hail shower. Nothing like it had ever been visited on the area in living memory, according to the oldest inhabitants. More than 80 panes of glass were smashed at Burnham House. Houses in the town also had many of their windows broken.

Two women were tragically killed in an accident at Milltown, near Dingle, on Saturday night. The women were heading home from the local weekly market by horse and car. The horse suddenly bolted and caused the women to be pitched from the car and they were killed when the car came down on top of them. One of the victims was married to a farmer named John Moriarty and the other to Maurice Walsh, also a farmer.

Fishing boats caught in storm From – Tralee Chronicle, 22 March 1859 Sixteen trawlers left Dingle harbour for the fishing grounds at daybreak on the 11th of March. By mid-afternoon it began to blow hard and then developed into a gale. Some vessels managed to reach the harbour in the evening. The wind increased in force and veered to N.N.W. That made it impossible for the rest of the fleet to gain the harbour but four vessels managed to anchor outside the harbour’s mouth. They were the Bee, the Druid, the Eva and the Iretown. But four other vessels were now on the missing list. Families gathered on the strand lamenting the unknown fate of their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons. That state of uncertainty continued until the following afternoon when a report came that two trawlers were anchored near the Minard coast guard station. The coast guards had seen signals of distress flying from the vessels at daybreak. They launched their boat in very dangerous conditions and rescued both crews from their perilous position. When the crews were landed each coast guard took two of the exhausted men to their own houses, gave them a change of clothing and fed them. Much credit for their rescue and treatment is due to the chief boatman of the Minard coast guards Mr. Ford. Two trawlers were still on the missing list but four days later, on the 16th, they were seen sailing across the bay from Valentia where they had been driven during the gale but where they were able to shelter. No lives were lost during the storm but much damage was done to sails and trawls. West Kerry Live 15

Farming News Louis Murchan BEEF ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY PROGRAMME - SUCKLER Farmers are reminded of their obligation under the BEEP-S Scheme. This is one of these “farmer-led” schemes that rely on the farmer to complete the tasks themselves. There is no need in looking for outside help as this is an operational programme, while advisors and consultants offer tactical and technical help only. So the onus is on the farmer to compete the tasks. With regard to the Obligations of the Programme, there are a number of actions in the Programme, with action one being compulsory. Applicants then also have the option to choose two options from the possible three listed. Action 1: Weighing and Submission of Weights to ICBF. This is a compulsory action. Participants must weigh each unweaned calf and its dam and submit weights to ICBF within 7 days. Requirement 1 - All Calves submitted for weighing must have been born between 01 July 2019 and 30 June 2020. Requirement 2 – Unweaned Live Calf and Dam must be weighed on the applicants holding on the same day. Requirement 3 – Only scales registered and used as per terms and conditions may be used. Requirement 4 – Weights must be submitted between 01/01/2020 and 01/11/2020. Participants should carefully read Annex 1 for further details on this action Option 1: Meal Feeding pre-weaning and post weaning. Introduce meal feeding for a period of 4 weeks pre-weaning and 2 weeks post weaning to reduce the stress on calves at weaning time and record action. Calves 7 must be supplemented with compound feeding stuffs containing appropriate minerals and vitamins. Participants should carefully read Annex 2 for further details on this action. Option 2: Vaccination Implement a Vaccination programme for respiratory diseases in suckler calves for respiratory diseases and record details of vaccination. Participants should carefully read Annex 3 for further details on this action. Option 3: Faecal Egg Testing Faecal Egg Testing is targeted at the control of liver fluke in adult suckler cows. Samples must be taken and submitted to approved laboratories (these can be found on the Department website, here before the 01st of November 2020. Participants should carefully read Annex 4 for further details on this action. All appendices are included in the documentation provided to each participant by the Department of Agriculture. N & P STATEMENTS TO 30 JUNE 2020 NOW AVAILABLE The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine has announced that interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period January to June 2020 are now available on the Department’s online system www. agfood.ie. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year, in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation the limit is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. Farmers not already registered for agfood.ie can do so by logging onto www.agfood.ie and clicking the 'Register' button. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE WARNING - SCAMMING THE COMMUNITY There is enough fraudulent activity in society with pretend charities, and bogus fund-raising. The last thing we need is another 16 West Kerry Live

con-man or scam to rip off members of our community. There is nothing worse that giving to a charity only to discover that some of the money donated is used to take someone’s whole extended family on a holiday, then to have them come back, looking for more. This type of people are vultures, preying on the goodness of God-fearing and communityminded charitable people. Almost as bad is the scammers who claim that they will solve all your problems. All you have to do is give them the sixteen-digit code from your credit or debit card, and they will do the rest. Fleece you, like a sheep. But at least these people “give you a kiss before screwing you”. Another type is those who rent community facilities or buildings yet wont pay rent and hide behind the “LTD” of their business name. Farmers have become victim to this, and though they may not have actually had money taken from their pocket, they are at a loss, losing dividends or services, unavailable to them due to loss of funding or income (to their organisation, co-operative, association etc. The Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine has recently become aware of a number of phone calls to farmers from a person purporting to represent the Department, seeking bank details. They state that they need these details to allegedly offer refunds or seek due payments. This Department never seeks bank details or any other personal information by phone or by text message. If you receive a telephone call purporting to be from this Department and seeking this type of information, please do not share your information. None of our staff will mind you taking their name and ringing back on one of the official numbers listed on our website – do not use the number such a caller gives you. You can also report such phone calls to our Quality Service Unit us at 076 1064468. Anyone who mistakenly provides personal information in response to these types of fraudulent phone calls should contact their bank or credit card company immediately and alert the Gardaí. It is important to point out that these types of scams do not involve this Department’s systems or security, they are designed to get your bank details. GLAS RARE BREEDS FARMERS An extension to the date for submission of the 2019 Rare Breed declaration form & record sheet is fast approaching. Any farmer that is getting paid in GLAS for keeping rare breeds must ensure that their paperwork for 2019 is submitted before the 31st of July 2020. This is an extension to the original submission date and it won’t be extended again. If you don’t have your paperwork submitted by this date you will be rejected from this action in GLAS plan and all money that was received by the farmer under this measure will be recouped in full. This situation can get even worse if this action was the action that was used to gain a farmer entry into the scheme then the farmer will also be rejected out of the GLAS scheme. This will result in a total clawback of all money received in the GLAS scheme. Requirements for Rare Breeds; Participants must: • For Bovines and Ovines be a member of a breed society approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, for the period of the contract. • For Equines be a member of a studbook approved by the Department of Agriculture, Food and Marine, for the period of the contract. • For Bovines and Ovines register all progeny from a purebred mating with the relevant breed society where they are seeking a GLAS rare breed payment on the animal. • For Equines, register all progeny from a purebred mating with the relevant studbook where they are seeking a GLAS rare breed payment on the animal. • Maintain an up-to-date monthly record of all registered animals owned by you. 4. Milltown Castlemaine GAA Notes

Go neirí go gheal leat Thady: It was wonderful to see our senior player Thady O’Sullivan pay a visit to his own Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Grounds on Thursday afternoon last. Thady will soon travel to Dublin to continue his fight against illness but he didn’t want to do so without calling to make a check on the progress of the Field Development Project. And he made sure he was wearing his club colours too! We know that every single member of our club will wish him the very best as he continues his brave fight. Your courage, bravery and grace is an inspiration to all of us young or old. Best wishes Thady from everyone at your Milltown/Castlemaine GAA Club. (Photo to follow from my personal email) Children's Choir: We had a very welcome return of the Children's Choir on Sunday morning last at the 11.15 a.m. mass, after a break since last March due to Covid. While we didn't have the usual 20 plus performers because of number restrictions, two of our underage girls played a blinder with Sarah on concertina and Eimear on vocals. Well done girlsmulti talented ye are. Cómhbhrón: We extend our sympathy to our Deacon Conor Bradley on the recent death of his brother Jim. We are thinking of you and your family at this sad and difficult time. May Jim Rest In Peace. SENIORS: Sunday saw the long awaited and eagerly anticipated resumption of competitive GAA action for the first time in over four months as Milltown/Castlemaine and Waterville clashed in a Round 1 Intermediate Championship fixture, played in Glenbeigh as all games this weekend were neutral venues. In what is by and large perceived a very open group with two Mid Kerry and two South Kerry clubs, both sides were hoping to get off to the best possible start and take home the victory along with the all-important two points. A change to the championship format for 2020 up to last year now sees the top two in each of the four Intermediate Championship groups advance to the Quarter-Finals so there is added incentive for every team at this grade to advance to the final stages. Milltown/Castlemaine were dealt two injury blows leading into today’s contest as the influential duo of Gavin Horan and Dylan O’Neil were both side-lined. Of course, when such bad luck falls upon these individuals, the other side

20 West Kerry Live

of the coin would say it presents opportunities for others to put their hand up and stake their claim for a starting spot. Prior to throw-in, there was two changes on the Milltown/Castlemaine side from the match programme. In came Jerome Flynn as a direct replacement for Dylan O’Neil whilst John Dennehy replaced Killian Kerins at Wing-Forward. Waterville also had a change from the programme with Oran Clifford coming in for Jamie Donnelly. Jonathan O’Sullivan kicked the opening point of the game inside two minutes on the turn for Milltown/Castlemaine to get the scoreboard working for the Mid Kerry side. Waterville midfielder Cormac O’Sullivan responded in kind in the fifth minute and pointed a long-range effort to tie matters up at 0-1 to 0-1. It was to be all one-way traffic for the South Kerry men for the next ten minutes as they seemed to settle the better of the two sides and after the energetic Sam O’ Dwyer pointed excellently to make it 0-2 to 0-1 in their favour in the ninth minute before a rather poor goal to concede from a Milltown/Castlemaine perspective in the 13th minute, punched to the net after Cormac Leane initially making a good save, the rebound wasn’t dealt with and in popped Alan O’ Dwyer to fist home out of the hands of a Milltown/ Castlemaine player. Oran Clifford extended this lead further with a point from play and had the Mid Kerry men in seemingly big trouble at the midway point of the first half at 1-03 to 0-1. Waterville will probably point to the next action as a critical move in halting their momentum as a water-break took place for both sides (Part of the new rules for the GAA resumption at the middle juncture of either half). Milltown/Castlemaine will again on the flipside to the above say that it came at an ideal stage for them as they regrouped and went again with renewed impetus. There is no doubt that it was a factor as following the restart, Milltown/Castlemaine would finish the half with six of the last eight scores with the South Kerry side only adding two points to their total from the first fifteen minutes in the form of two Barry O’ Dwyer 14 yard frees. David Roche, who had an outstanding game from centre-forward and the first of what would be two super scores from marauding wing-back Gavin McKenna as well as a Brendan Delaney point which was calmly slotted over seen Waterville’s lead cut to 1-4 to 0-4 after 25 mins. Gavin McKenna (always a good man for an attacking jaunt from deep) notched his second point in a matter of minutes after some neat interchange play with Jerome Flynn, Pa Wren with a terrific long distance score and an equaliser from David Roche had matters back at 1-4 to 0-7. Barry O’ Dwyer through a free after he was deemed to have been fouled off the ball seemed to have given Waterville a narrow lead at the break but Craig Counihan popped up with the score and a great effort it was too going away from the goal 30 metres out which ensured both sides retired at the interval level-pegging at 1-5 to 0-8. The second half seen Milltown/Castlemaine and Waterville go toe-to-toe for the first fifteen minutes and there was very little to separate both sides during this stage of the match. It was really only when the game began to open up in the final quarter that Milltown/Castlemaine kicked for home and ran out convincing winners. The half-time break ironically and in total contrast to the earlier stoppage actually seemed to have suited the South Kerry side more and it showed in the early stages of the second half as Waterville

started brighter and Fergal Cronin had them ahead at 1-6 to 0-8 by the 32nd minute. There was also two wides thereafter which could have pushed the lead out further in their favour but ultimately this would the last time they would lead in this game as Milltown/Castlemaine came again and started to take over, tightening up defensively, winning the midfield battles and above all finding the scores easier to come by. Following superb build-up play coming in along the end line from a rather subdued Jonathan O’Sullivan up to that point, he played in Cathal Moriarty (Another quiet figure up to this point) and he made no mistake, palming the ball over the on-rushing Waterville goalkeeper to make it 1-9 to 1-6. It was a sign that these two top-quality players, who when on-song are crucial to this side and can often be un-markable had upped their game and were ready to guide their team to victory. More hard work from Man of the Match in my view today David Roche seen him dispossess Waterville coming out of defence and he set up Moriarty unselfishly to widen the gap to four points on 46 mins at 1-10 to 1-6. Sam O’ Dwyer kept the contest alive for Waterville immediately after with an instant reply from distance in open play but Moriarty and O’Sullivan were on a different level for Milltown/Castlemaine by now and they added two fine points in the 52nd and 55th mins to make it 1-12 to 1-7, Moriarty had a goal on but opted to take the safer option, O’Sullivan cutting inside the corner-back, onto his weaker left and effortlessly slotting over. There was a water-break again just before these two scores and an extended break followed due to an injury suffered by Craig Counihan who had to be stretchered off. We wish him the very best in his rehabilitation as it’s never nice to see anyone carried away like this. A strong finish from Milltown/Castlemaine seen them add a further 1-3 as points from Pa Wren, Jonathan O’Sullivan and Cathal Moriarty and a goal from substitute Killian Kerins following brilliant build-up play from O’Sullivan when evading the attention of a number of defenders seen the score-line widen to ten points at the games conclusion. Probably a bit cruel on Waterville to lose out so heavily at the end, they were well in this game approaching the latter stages but our lads can be justifiably proud of a strong finish, showing tremendous fitness levels. Score: Milltown/Castlemaine 2-15 Waterville 1-8 Milltown/Castlemaine Team: Cormac Leane, Stephen Roche, Ciaran O’Connor, Jonathan O’Connor, Jeremiah Hayes, Gavin McKenna (0-2) , Pa Wren (0-2), Brendan Delaney (0-1), Donal Dennehy, John Dennehy, David Roche (Capt.) (0-2), Craig Counihan (0-1), Jonathan O’Sullivan (0-3), Cathal Moriarty (1-4), Jerome Flynn MINORS: Well done to our Minor team and their opponents Spa who played their part in a very entertaining game recently, as both teams saw their return to action. A high scoring affair that produced 10 goals also seen some fantastic defensive displays. Our team led by 3-07 to 1-09 at the break and finished the game with six point margin. Our minors next day out in the county league will come against Annascaul/Dingle/ Lispole on the Sat the 15th of Aug with a 4pm throw in scheduled.

Small Changes: Fruit & Veg

New research conducted by Bord Bia has found that on average Irish people eat 3.9 portions of fruit and vegetables a day. This is well below the new HSE Health Eating Guidelines which recommend eating seven servings every day. Doubling our consumption of more locally grown, seasonal fruit and veg, as Bord Bia are encouraging us all to do, would be beneficial from not only a nutritional point of view but also from economic and environmental perspectives. Cost is often cited as a barrier to increased consumption of fresh produce yet 25% of fruit and vegetables and over 50% of salads and herbs purchased to eat at home are thrown in the bin. So, to continue on the theme of small changes we can easily adopt to tackle food waste, this article will focus on fruit, veg and salads. BUYING FRESH PRODUCE Becoming aware of what you throw out most is key to reducing all food waste as this knowledge makes it easy to rectify the problem by just buying less. Adopting habits such as rotating food in the fridge, using veg with the shortest shelf life first, using a shopping list (and sticking to it), meal planning, meal matching (i.e. leftovers and the carcass from roast chicken on Sunday can be used for chicken noodle soup on Monday) and batch cooking are also indispensable tools for tackling food waste. However, the best laid plans often go awry especially with modern busy lifestyles so it is important to select fruit and vegetables wisely- buy just what you need, check the best before dates and avoid bulk discounts e.g. 3 for 2 unless you are 100% sure it will be used. Nothing is a bargain if it ends up in the bin. Buying loose fruit and vegetables (easiest to do in dedicated local fruit and vegetable shops and markets) will give you more control to purchase the amount/size/ripeness/condition of produce that suits your needs and unnecessary packaging is avoided as a bonus. Correct storage (see below) and preparing your fruit and vegetables to make them easily accessible (e.g. cutting up pineapples, melons etc. as soon as they are ripe will increase the likelihood of eating them) will also contribute to a reduction in your household food waste. SEASONALITY Supermarkets are able to offer the same food choices almost year round now due to a global market and new growing technologies. As a result many of us have either never learned or have lost the knowledge of when most fresh produce is in its natural growing season. Moreover, almost four in ten people buy the same fruit and vegetables in their weekly shop all year long. Buying food out of season limits nutrient intake and significantly increases the emissions and pollution associated with food production (have a look at Simon Reeves Mediterranean BBC programme from Alemeria, Spain for some insight). Choosing to buy in–season means you get local food at its cheapest and at its nutritional peak. It drastically reduces waste and conserves resources used through the whole supply chain as there is no need for excess packaging, forced growth, storage, shipping etc. The website www.bestinseason.ie is a great resource to let you know what produce is in its prime at any given time of year, while www. giy.ie provides ideas on how best to use it. The EPA funded programme www.stopfoodwaste.ie also has a seasonal calendar which you can print out to know what is in season each month.

STORAGE Proper storage of fresh fruit and vegetables ensures maximum flavour and nutrition as well as well as providing the longest possible shelf life. It is not possible to advise on best storage practice for every single fruit and vegetable here so I will just address the fruit and vegetables wasted most in Ireland- apples, bananas, potatoes and salad leaves. www.stopfoodwaste. ie has an A-Z list of all fruit and vegetables and instructions on how best to store them. Apples- Irish apples are at their peak from September to December. Apples will keep for up to a week on a counter top but up to a month in the fridge. Many fruits and vegetables give off a gas called ethylene which speeds up the ripening of other fruit but apples are super emitters so should always, if possible, be stored in a separate bowl from other fruits and vegetables or in their own crisper drawer in the fridge (unless of course you wish to speed up the ripening of other fruits). Try to avoid buying apples by the bag in plastic wrapping but if this is not an option then always remove the plastic or the apples will become over ripe very quickly due to concentration of the ethylene gas. Apples can be sliced and frozen to use in smoothies, cakes, scones etc. or they can be stewed before freezing and defrosted for apple sauce, used in baking or used as a topping for porridge for example. Potatoes should always be stored in cool, dry and dark conditions. Exposure to light causes potatoes to go green and produce a chemical called solanine which at best makes potatoes taste bitter and at worst can cause illness. Moisture/dampness causes the potatoes to rot so if they have been sold in plastic packaging then swop them into a potato sack or brown paper bag when you bring them home as the plastic encourages condensation. It is also advisable not to wash potatoes before storing them for this reason. If you grow your own potatoes just brush excess soil off the tubers and leave to dry before storing. Potatoes should never be stored in the fridge or frozen raw as the very cold temperatures increase sugars in the potatoes which can lead to high levels of substances called acrylamides (these are carcinogenic) when they are fried or roasted. Potatoes can be frozen once partially or fully cooked. Potatoes should never be stored with onions as they cause them to sprout early. Placing a single apple in a bag of potatoes will help prevent them from sprouting. Bananas-Locally grown bananas are never going to be an option in Ireland so choosing Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance Certified products are good choices from environmental and social perspectives. Bananas are also strong emitters of ethylene so it’s best to avoid buying a bunch in a plastic bag unless you are going to eat them immediately. Buying loose bunches of bananas also gives you the option of choosing fruits at different stages of ripeness which can be used throughout the week. If you hang them on a hook it allows air to circulate slowing down the ripening process. Alternatively, separating bananas off the bunch before storing will have the same effect (always try to avoid placing bananas and apples in the same fruit bowl). Do not store bananas in the fridge as they just turn black. Peeled ripe or over ripe bananas do however freeze very well and can be used in smoothies, milkshakes and banana bread. Blending with other fruits such as strawberries make healthy ice pops and frozen banana pieces are great for soothing the gums of teething toddlers. Salad leaves & Herbs- Lettuce and salad leaves are probably the most wasted food type. If you are anyway green fingered, growing some cut and come again lettuce varieties in a pot or the herbs that you use the most, would help reduce salad waste. If you buy salad leaves then always remove them from the plastic packaging as they will just putrefy in it. Do not wash salad leaves until you are ready to use them. To store, line an airtight box such as Tupperware with kitchen towel or muslin and cover to keep the leaves crisp. Alternatively, roll the leaves up in a dry towel. Always store in them in the fridge with the exception of Mediterranean herbs like basil which should be kept at room temperature. Leaves that look wilted can be revived by placing in ice cold water for between ten minutes and half an hour. Most lettuce and salad leaves can be frozen and used like spinach in soups, curries, frittatas, stir-fries and stews. More robust lettuce varieties such as little gem or iceberg can be griddled or fried as a side dish. All green leaves can be used to make a variety of pesto and salsa verde, both of which can be frozen when made. Soft herbs such as coriander, sage and parsley can be chopped and frozen in ice cube trays with a little olive oil and used in soups and stews etc., while woody herbs like thyme and rosemary can be

90% of us throw away food too soon, not recognising that it still has a nutritional value or that it can be restored. Salad leaves and root vegetables such as carrots which appear wilted or flaccid can be placed in iced water for half an hour to restore them. Food on the turn should be utilised in dishes or recipes immediately before it turns bad. If this is not possible then most fruit and vegetables can be frozen either raw or with a little bit of preparation instead of discarding them e.g. frozen citrus slices can be used for drinks or frozen zest and juice can be used for baking and cooking. Just remember to label everything you freeze!

Mail Road, Dingle Tyre Centre

Dingle

Many of the peels, stalks, stems, seeds and leaves that are almost automatically thrown away have a great nutritional value or can be used in alternative ways. For example, the stems of kale, beetroot and chard can be used in stir-fries and stews, the leaves of young beetroot can be used as salad leaves while older beetroot leaves can be used as you would spinach. Carrot tops can be used in pesto, pea pods and leaves can be used to make soup and the stalks of broccoli can be peeled and chopped and used alongside broccoli florets. The peels of veg including the skins of onions can be frozen and used to make vegetable stock at a later date while wilted herbs, strawberry tops, citrus peels etc. can all be used to flavour water. All squash seeds can be roasted and used as a snack, to add crunch to salads or used instead of pine nuts in pesto. Potato peels are very nutritious and are delicious deep fried or roasted. Pickles, flavoured vinegars and ferments are becoming a more popular Vehicle Testing for all Light Commercial Vehicles sight in supermarkets and market stalls but are incredibly easy to make at home and a great way of using fruit and veg slightly past their best.

Unfortunately we are still not fully open to the public for the use of the computers-but if you have any printing or photocopying to do we can get that done for you. Can Rings: I read a month ago of someone in Cromane collecting can ring from drink cans, so I sent her some and asked for more information. She explained that there was an elderly man collecting them. His wife and son had both died of cancer. They collect them and his other son takes them to a recycling centre in Cork. Whatever money they get they donate to the Palliative care unit in Kerry. Obviously it takes a lot of them as they are paid by weight. So, I thought if we could add to his collection it would make Palliative care a bit more money. So could you please save your drink can rings and drop them into the infomation centre every time you collect 20 or more and I will send them on. Thank you in advance for doing your part. Saving Energy Tips at home Switch Cost Your Energy Provider

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

(and save hundreds of euro every year) A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

So, where do you start? Firstly, you will need your most recent electricity bill with your Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN) on it. You will also need your current metre reading so your old supplier can provide you with a final bill and your new supplier can start from that point. If you wish to, you could then contact your existing provider and ask them if they can offer you a better deal to your existing one. You should expect to be offered a discount of between 10% and 20% on what you are already paying. If they are not willing to offer this then you need to go elsewhere. Where can you find the best value? Most companies offer substantial discounts to new customers. The best value for you will depend on the size of your house and your usage patterns. There are accredited price comparison websites, www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie and you should input as much information as possible to get a result tailored to your personal circumstances and usage. How to make the switch: These price comparison sites will not only provide you with a list of energy suppliers and how much you’ll save by switching, but they will also guide you through the switching process online. According to www.switcher.ie, this will only take you about 5 minutes. They will contact your new supplier and forward your application to them. Once your new supplier receives and accepts your application, they’ll handle the switch with your old supplier. You will then receive a final bill from your old supplier, and once you have paid this, your account with them will be closed. Alternatively, having viewed the price comparisons online, you can then contact your new chosen provider yourself. Most suppliers will offer further discounts if you pay by Direct Debit, so you may also need your bank details. Once your account has been switched, your new provider will send you a welcome letter so make sure to read all the terms and conditions and if you have any questions you should contact your new supplier. A 14-day cooling-off period applies, so if you are not happy you can cancel your contract.

Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland The communities and businesses of the Dingle Peninsula have worked very hard to make our destination safe, welcoming and a place for families and visitors to have a fabulous time this extraordinary summer. While the weather may be providing “a very Irish summer”, it is so good to see so many enjoying our local activities and attractions both on land and sea. Whilst managing social distancing can be challenging at times, we ask everyone to be mindful of our community by practicing safe social distancing, safe coughing etiquette, washing your hands regularly and wearing your face mask indoors and in queues. With reduced capacity and space this summer for pubs serving food, restaurants, cafes, activities, attractions and accommodation, pre-bookings and reservations are advised in advance to avoid disappointment. Please avoid crowded areas and gatherings in the interests of your safety and well-being and the safety and well-being of our community. The Dingle Peninsula Open 4 Business brochure is updated weekly so for a list of places to eat, stay, see and do, please visit www.dingle-peninsula. ie Home Page, on Dingle Peninsula social channels or at https://www.dinglepeninsula. net/open4business/mobile/index.html Last week Government announced the July Stimulus Plan. A Carnival Queen was selected and there was a week of nightly entertainment, dances and some sporting events, like Tug-o-War with participants and groups coming from the neighbouring villages. The Fancy Dress Parade was always a big attraction and festivities usually began on a Sunday night with people coming from all over to take part in a very colourful parade through the village.

There was always a prize for the best performing artists, it was great fun and everybody wanted to win of course. A group of young lads and lassies from Aughills, across the hill from us were very popular participants in the local carnivals of the 1960's. They had a very aptly themed walking very creative, manmade cow, named, West Kerry's Last Reactor. At that time cows who failed the TB test were known as reactors and usually their final fate was to be sold off to the Factory. And so West Kerry's Last Reactor turned up to all the carnivals and won prizes every time. Aughills, take a bow, good to see that the inventors of West Kerry's Last Reactor are still hail and harty. JM Synge's Playboy of The Western World was also a theme for a float at the Carnivals in those days. A part of the movie was filmed in Inch Beach and Siobhán McKenna and some other famous film stars became household names in the area. Great times and happy days ! Good health to all those who remember those days and RIP to all who have since passed on. COVID-19 Face coverings are now compulsory for customers and staff in all shops and indoor settings in the community where social distancing is difficult. Ar Scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine. Pan Fried Mackerel, New Potato Salad, Mustard and Dill Mayonnaise Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School

For the fish rapeseed oil salt and pepper 2 mackerel fillets, skin on and bones removed ½ lemon, juiced Method

Fresh mackerel has to be one of summer’s finest treats. Here is a beautiful and easy salad that complements the mackerel. As always with an oily fish something like mustard and the lemon juice will help cut through the richness of the oily fish. For updates to all our classes please check out www.dinglecookeryschool.com

For the potato salad Add the potatoes to boiling salted water, allow these to cook for about 6 minutes, carefully check the potatoes with a sharp knife. Once they are cooked, strain them. Add the horseradish, parsley and spring onion, mix this all together. Season with salt and pepper. Allow this to cool slightly. For the mayonnaise

What’s Happening in the Hub?

Deirdre de Bhailís We’ve been listening closely to the needs of those of you who are currently working remotely from the Dingle Peninsula and it seems clear that the provision of space to enable professional video conferencing with high spec technology and reliable broadband is one of the key requirements. This can facilitate commercial meetings, training sessions, webinars and the general digital enablement of activities on the Peninsula. For this reason, the Dingle Hub is seeking proposals for the provision of a full video conferencing solution for a meeting room located at the Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub in Cúilín Business Park. Full details of the brief can be found on www.dinglehub.com/vacancies. If you are interested in working with us to complete this project, please send a proposal to tenders@dinglehub.com no later than 15:00 on Wednesday, August 26th. The installation needs to be completed by the end of October 2020 and has a maximum budget of €7,500. It is important to note that access to the Dingle Hub will be by prior appointment only for the duration of Covid-19 restrictions. Anyone who wishes to use the facilities can book a hot desk online at www.dinglehub. com or contact info@dinglehub.com to arrange longer term options. Our conference room is currently available for online booking on a half-day or full-day basis. The conference room can accommodate up to 3 people while maintaining social distancing. Make sure to contact us to discuss your needs as we have packages to cater for those who want to work from here on a partial, intermittent or permanent basis. Making Ryan’s Daughter le

Paul Benedict Rowan foilsithe ag

New Island ‘David Lean’s making of Ryan’s Daughter in Dingle between 1968 and 1970 is shrouded in myth and sensational stories. Robert Mitchum and the glamour and mischief of 1960s Hollywood, the Irish climate, the studio system and one of film’s greatest auteurs all converged to make a troubled and fabled production in an unsuspecting town in Co. Kerry. Fifty years on, Paul Benedict Rowan has written the definitive account of one of the great movie follies and its unique place in cinematic and Irish history. Bringing together exclusive cast and crew interviews, a wealth of previously unseen archive material and extraordinary accounts of the local people who took Lean and his epic to their hearts, this pacy, entertaining and often jaw-dropping account is everything you ever wanted to know about David Lean’s great ‘fillum’ and its tragic aftermath.’ - New Island An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Tá rince an turcaí ag an aimsir. N’fheadar an bhfuil aon chúis ag na Déithe Bréagacha leath-bhrógach ar phobal na tíre. Níl a déarfann- ná fuilimíd i lár an tSamhraidh fé láthair. Lá breá sceonmhar agus lá allais. Féach an luas a bhí fén n-gaoth a scrios a raibh roimpi agus a mhairbh scata daoine i Stát mór Texas. 186 Méadar san uair agus níos mó mar a raibh cóchanna suas dtí 200 M.S.U ná tagann ach go hannamh. Ní théann daoine ach go dtí tíortha an bhrothaill. Is abhar mór iontais é mura gceapann an ghrian í féin. Brothall baois agus brothall gréine agus is ionadh dóibh má ghabhann gála miartúnach chucha a thagann a leithéidhí coitianta sa cheantar sin i Meiricá agus áiteanna eile. Thuaidh agus Theas nuair a mheasfá go mbeadh an ghrian ag scoltadh na gcloch. Ba dhóigh leat gur i lár an gheimhridh a bhís. Ach ansan lá breá brothallach againn. Is dóichí gur ag dul sa tseans atá CLG go mbeidh cluichí roimh agus i ndiaidh Na Nollag mar atá meáite acu. Mar bharr ar sin tá oiread fonn ar dhaoine tabhairt fén ‘samhradh sa Phortaingéil go bhfuil siad sásta cuid dá saol a chaitheamh i bpríosún. Tá na mílte tréis teacht go hÉirinn agus ba cheart gach duine acu ag súil le brothall na gréine a mheas. Tá iliomad bua ag Éirinn fiú is má tá mí-thuiscint. Caithfeadh an riach a bheith ar an scéal. Bheadh an mhí-sheans laistiar dó. Cinnte bhuailfeadh an víoras daoine a bheadh fé sheacht dhóirse. Conas mar a bheidh ag na trialacha atá déanta agus conas mar bheidh na triallacha ó Ollscoil Oxford, a bheidh fáil go luath. Tátar cinnte go bhfuil cuma na maitheasa ar an dtástail atá déanta. Gan amhras tá lucht léinn i scata tír ag iarraidh congas a chuireadh stop leis an víros corónach. Tá an obair le coghas no vaicín ina rás ag sata Ollscoil. Is mó teaghlach atá ag guí go gcabróidh an choróin pháirteach an viras mallaithe a cheannsú go buan. Má leanann an víoras seo beidh scata daoine ná beidh aon aithne acu artha. Is sort príosún a déarfaí atá i ndán dóibh siúd a bhrisfidh rialacha an rialtais. Is ceart duinn éisteacht leis na saineólaithe agus a gcuid rialacha . Is mó duine a bheidh fén bhfód sara mbeidh fáil ar chongas leighis. Tiocfadhan lá sin ach beidh sé ró-dhéanach i gcás na milte atá buailte ag an víoras mallaithe . Is baolach go raibh daoine ró neamhspleach le treóracha a ghlacadh, acu féin a bhí - atá an t-eolas is dócha. Oideachas Ní raibh sí ró-fhada tofa ina TD nuair a ceapadh Norma Foley ina hAire Oideachais. Tá aithne mhaith agam uirthi ón gComhairle Contae agus coistí éagsúla. Bean éifeachach tuiscionach, deirtear. Tá airgead trom le caitheamh ag an Roinn Oideachas. Is dócha go mbeidh athruithe na maitheasa ar an gcúram ach mura gclaíotar an víoras seo, beidh farraigí tréanna ag luí ar gach aon duine sa domhan. Cainteanna Tá sé ráite go bhfuil fear críochnúil Dan Mac Cárthaigh, ar liosta oibre ag Norma Foley. Go n-éirí a bhóthar le Dan. Tá go leor cloiste againn fena dhúracht agus a chumas.

Beidh coráití coitianta ag Breandán an Daingin agus Dan Mac Carthaigh, conas is fearr a gcúram a chur chun cinn. Seo leo. Tá sé tabhach bheith i lathair le linn roinnt na slisíní nó babhtáil beartais. Údarás Nílim cinnte an bhfuil litir curtha ag Cumannn Cearta Siabhalta na Gaeltachta dtí an dTaoiseach Mícheál ó Máirtín ag cur in úil go ndúirt sé go raibh sé i bhfábhar Údarás Daonlathach Gaeltachta, a bheith ag muintir na Gaeltachta. Cloisimíd fé sara fada as seo go Nollaig. Dá mbeadh mar a bhí fadó an tÚdarás daonlathach againn is beag in aon chor an costas breise a bheadh i gceist. D’fheadfaí toghchán an Údaráis a bheith ann lá toghacháin Comhairle Contae, lá Olltoghcháin, nó lá reifrinn. Cá bhfuil an costas breise? Daonlathas a bhí á éileamh ó thús dtí gur chuir páirtí Politiúil pionna sa chúramm rud a dhein coiste na gcarad don Údarás agus go meas scata go raibh baill an Údaráis fanta ‘ge baile nó díobartha go Gleann an amhrais nó Poll an amhrais. Is beag eatortha.
