19TH-22ND NOVEMBER 2020
Dingle from a Distance Dingle Lit Launch Festival Programme Following a hugely successful inaugural festival in 2019, Dingle Lit is delighted to announce a wonderfully eclectic mix of authors and events for their 2020 Literary Festival, which will take place from the 19th-22nd November. Dingle from a Distance will be a selection of live on-line events celebrating writers from Ireland and abroad, poetry, theatre and creative writing workshops. The distinguished line-up features actor Gabriel Byrne and his forthcoming memoir Walking with Ghosts as well as New York Times bestseller Brit Bennett and her novel exploring race and identity The Vanishing Half. Nigerian author Abi Daré will be interviewed on her harrowing yet triumphant novel, The Girl with the Louding Voice, while Sarah Moss will discuss her darkly comic novel, Summerwater. Irish authors being celebrated over Dingle Lit include Doireann Ní Ghríofa, Mary Kennedy, Cathy Kelly, Felicity Hayes-McCoy, Mary O’Donnell and Sara Baume, all contributing to a wonderful program. Peter Geoghegan will discuss Democracy for Sale, Caelainn Hogan talks to the survivors of brutality of women in her book Republic of Shame, while Mark O’Connell will tell us how to survive the End, in discussing Notes from an Apocalypse.

We are thrilled to host an event with Manchán Magan in which he dig deep into the Irish language, revealing words, expressions and concepts that offer new ways of being in the world, of seeing nature & experiencing reality.
Siopa na bhFíodóirí
A little sparkle and merriment will include cocktail making with the Peaky Blinders Cocktail Book and cookery with Michelin-starred chef JP McMahon and his book, The Irish Cookbook. Dingle Lit 2020 will be a largely online festival, with the committee making the brave and bold decision to host live events on the Dingle Lit website. There will be a small number of hybrid events where a small audience can attend and will be streamed online. Festival Director, Sheila O’Reilly says of the forthcoming festival, "With the Dingle Literary Festival going ahead, albeit online, we can fulfill our aims of championing books and bringing authors and readers together. Going online also offers the opportunity of reaching a global audience and if book lovers cannot come to Dingle, we can bring a little bit of Dingle to them. We look forward to being a bright shining light of books and authors over a dark November weekend".

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís In June, the Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub ran a collaborative workshop in association with Imagination of Things to imagine and shape new possibilities for the Dingle Peninsula. Members of the community from a range of different sectors joined us to unlock ideas to start shaping a new future. An overview of the workshop and the concepts that emerged can be found at www.dinglepeninsula2030.com/re-imagine The workshop was an important building block for the creation of a collective, inclusive vision for the peninsula. But it was just one part of the journey. We would now like to share those ideas with you and invite you to join us online on Tuesday, October 6th from 7-8pm to hear what is possible to enhance our community and our lives on this beautiful peninsula. So many of you have skills, expertise and networks that could help turn these ideas into reality and you would be very welcome to join this journey and contribute to an idea that is of interest to you. County League Win Daingean Uí Chúis/Annascaul Vs Currow U-14 On a beautiful sun-filled afternoon in Currow last weekend our u14 footballers had a fantastic win against the home side. It was win for the girls born out of great determination and sprit as in the previous two meetings Currow had come out victorious on both occasions so our girls went in very much as underdogs. Despite a tough enough start where Currow were scoring at will and threatening at every attack our girls settled down to the task in hand. Playing with the hand of a strong breeze the girls went in 4-7 to 4-4 up at half time after Orlaith Murphy converted a penalty after Orlagh Clifford was pulled down in the square. However the 3rd quarter was to be decisive period in the game as Currow now playing with the aid of a strong breeze faced an onslaught from the Daingean Uí Chúis/Annascaul girls. It was the cornerstone for a great and well deserved win. The final score Daingean Uí Chúis/Annascaul 6-11 to Currow’s 6-04 It was a fantastic campaign overall for the girls led by goalkeeper Béibhinn Nic a tSithigh who was the difference between winning and losing and pulled off some fantastic saves in the final and her kickouts were excellent all through. Molly Greaney really improved as the campaign went on. Sarah Casey at full back was brilliantly consistent. Leah Ní Chonchúir was exceptional on the day and her experience was crucial. Ellie de hÓra was one of our star defenders throughout and at centre back Orlaith Murphy showed fantastic footballing abilities and Mae Griffin on the other wing was also outstanding and did a great man marking job in the final. Gráinne O’Dwyer had a brilliant final while Orlagh Clifford right through the league showed her outstanding athleticism in every game. Roise Deane at wing forward improved in every outing, she interchanged with Ellie Nic Gearailt who was our one of our most improved players this year and Saoirse Mehigan lead the attack brilliantly. Líle Ní Ghairbhí at left half forward had an exceptional final and her ball winning and distribution was excellent. Hannah Ní Ghrainbhíl got better each game as the campaign went on and Nóra Driscoll came up with some vital goals through out. Our speedster Ciara Ní Chinnéide caused huge problems for defenders and Meghan Brosnan came on and played a key role in the final as did Sinéad Murphy. Hayley Ní Fhlathara was outstanding coming off the bench and played her role superbly and is an outstanding talent for the future. Robin Ní Chaoinnealáin was injured for the final but played key role for us in the campaign. Final word goes to our two youngest players Ciara Slattery and Ciara Casey who both made important contributions in the final. Well done all !

Time for a Heart to Heart about Blood Pressure! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
The human body is an amazing machine that ticks along nicely for most of the time without much thought from us. A good example of this is how our blood is pumped around the body carrying oxygen, nutrients and other vital bits and bobs to keep us alive and kicking. When the heart beats, it creates pressure that pushes blood through a network of tube-shaped blood vessels, which include arteries, veins, and capillaries, collectively known as the circulatory system. This pressure — blood pressure — is the result of two forces: The first force (systolic pressure) occurs as blood pumps out of the heart and into the arteries. The second force (diastolic pressure) is created as the heart rests between heart beats. These two forces are each represented by the numbers in a blood pressure reading. For example, if your reading is 120/80mmHg, your blood pressure is 120 (systolic) over 80 (diastolic). Hypertension is diagnosed when the average blood pressure reading is more than 140 mmHg for systolic and over 90 mmHg for diastolic. It is estimated that 65% of Irish adults over the age of 50 have high blood pressure, ranking us one of the highest rates internationally yet among the lowest levels of diagnosis, treatment and control of the condition, according to research published in The Lancet in September 2019. Prior to modern medicine, high blood pressure was referred to as hard pulse disease. As far back as 2500BC, the Yellow Emperor of China noted that “if too much salt is used in blood, the pulse hardens.” Treatment of ‘hard pulse disease’ during ancient times included acupuncture, bloodletting and bleeding by leeches. Nice! Thankfully, great strides have been made, particularly since the 1700s when an English clergyman Stephen Hales, first published measurements of arterial blood pressure in a horse. Roll on to the 21st century, instruments and medicines to detect and treat high blood pressure are top notch but unfortunately, the need for such measures has also reached an all-time high. High blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) occurs when the force of your blood pushing against the walls of your blood vessels, is consistently too high. HBP increases the workload of the heart and blood vessels, making them work harder and less efficiently. Over time, the force and friction of HBP damages the delicate tissues inside the arteries. In turn, LDL (bad) cholesterol forms plaque along tiny tears in the artery walls (like a bandaid), signifying the start of atherosclerosis. The more the plaque and damage goes on, the narrower the insides of the arteries become – further raising blood pressure and starting a vicious circle that harms the arteries, heart and the rest of the body. Ultimately, this can lead to stroke, heart attack, arrhythmia, vision loss, kidney damage, heart failure and sexual dysfunction. If that’s not enough to raise your blood pressure, check your pulse! You must look at the why before you tackle the how to successfully manage your blood pressure. Not surprisingly, age, obesity, smoking, 8 West Kerry Live
alcohol, stress, diet and lifestyle are the prime suspects for high blood pressure. They cannot be ignored even with all the tablets and leeches at our disposal. Looking to our grub, a Mediterranean-type diet of fresh fruit and vegetables, nuts, seeds and pulses with low intake of sugar, sodas, meat and junk foods are required to making dietary changes to improve blood pressure. Omega 3 from small oily fish – (herring, mackerel, anchovies, sardines) provide the EPA and DHA, proven to lower blood pressure and improve blood lipid profiles. It is thought that EPA and DHA are involved in the integrity and elasticity of blood vessels, thus reducing the pressure on the walls. In study published in Journal of Research in Pharmacy Practice 2015, participants were given 3g/day of Omega 3 or placebo. At the end of the 8-week study, the omega group saw an average reduction of 14mmHg on systolic BP and an average of 11mmHG in diastolic pressure – while the placebo group saw a small increase in both measurements. A 100g portion of mackerel provides around 2.5g omega 3, concentrated in the brown flesh under the skin. EPA and DHA the active components of omega 3 are readily available in fish and fish oils. Plant-based omega 3 (from flax, chia and hemp seeds) is in the form of ALA and must be converted by the body to EPA and DHA. If supplementing, it is best to seek out readily available EPA and DHA to ensure you are getting the right stuff. Vitamin E found in nuts, seeds, avocados, olives and their cold-pressed oils act as an anti-oxidant repairing the damage to blood vessels which in turn reduces the amount of cholesterol in the arteries as a result of this damage. Vitamin B3 (niacin) and many red coloured fruits and vegetables dilate blood vessels, reducing pressure that way. Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10), a fatty antioxidant produced in the liver, heart, lungs and other organs is thought to act on vascular linings to reduce friction. Also, CoQ10 is needed for muscles to contract and relax efficiently, which may reduce the pressure of blood leaving the heart. Best dietary sources of CoQ10 include oily fish, organ meats (such as liver) and whole grains. Our response to stress increases blood pressure to prepare us to fight or flee from a physical threat. This survival mechanism got us out of many a scrape with predators back in the cave days. Now, the deadlines, juggling work and home life or running around like a blue-arsed fly is akin to having a snarling tiger at your cave door all the time. Consider ways to manage your day-to-day stress and allow for meaningful recovery and sleep. Know your numbers and make changes that matter to prevent and manage high blood pressure, the leeches may not thank you but your heart will! Chluain Chumhra), bhuail an Máistir Hickson liom – níos déanaí a fuaireas amach cérbh é. Chuir sé roinnt mhaith ceisteanna orm. Cad as dom? Cén t-ainm a bhí orm? Cad a thug go Lios Póil mé? Cén gnó a mbínn ag gabháil dó thuaidh? An rabhas pósta? Agus mar sin de. Ghlacas mar rud an-nádúrtha leis, go mbeadh daoine fiosrach faoin strainséar a lonnódh ina measc. Níor léir dom míbhéasacht ná dánaíocht sa cheistiúchán, agus thugas don Mháistir a raibh d’eolas uaidh. I mBéarla a labhair sé liom nuair a thug sé faoi deara chomh gann bacach is a bhí mo chuid Gaeilge. Níos giorra do Chinn Aird, in aice leis an bhFothraigh, bhuail seanduine an-aosta liom a chuir roinnt ceisteanna orm agus a chloígh leis an nGaeilge. Ní foláir nó bhí sé buíoch as ucht a fhreagairt go foighneach múinte, óir ghuigh sé beannacht orm mar strainséar ó íochtar na hÉireann agus dúirt go raibh cuntanós breá oscailte agam.” Ar deireadh, ag cuardach in athuair dom i nDaonáireamh 1911 6, b’é Thomas Brosnan “retired farmer” ón bhFothrach Mhór an té ba shine atá luaite ann, é in aois 72, a fhágann gur saolaíodh é in 1839. Cá bhfios ná gurbh é Thomas Brosnan an “seanduine an-aosta” úd a casadh ar Earnán in Aibreán 1913? FOCLÓIR

From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon The Middlesex [This is one account of the loss of the Middlesex – a story of tragedy, loss, sacrifice, rescue and reward].
Loss of the Middlesex From – Tralee Chronicle, 26 March 1861 The Middlesex, a 2,500-ton passenger/cargo ship from New York, left Liverpool for New York on 18 February 1861. She had 35 passengers and 33 crewmen on board. After three weeks sailing she encountered very heavy weather, her cargo shifted, she sprang a leak and developed a serious list. She hoisted distress signals in the hope of attracting assistance from a passing vessel. The ship remained like that for three days but no help came. She began to fill with water and for three days and nights the crew worked the pumps to keep her afloat. In addition, in order to lessen her weight the main masts were cut down. Lifeboats launched With the water almost level with the deck their position looked hopeless and so the Master, Captain Parmerlee, ordered the crew to launch the vessel’s two lifeboats. One of the lifeboats was smashed against the side of the ship. A crewman and the ship’s cook got into the other one and she immediately capsized in heavy seas. The cook managed to pull himself onto the upturned boat which then drifted away. Longboat launched As darkness approached, the ship’s last remaining boat, a longboat, was launched. The captain, ten crewmen and four passengers got on board. More than fifty souls remained on the Middlesex and were left to their fate on the sinking ship. [Ship’s longboats, in the 19th century, varied in size and were rowed by eight or ten men. Some longboats were fitted with a sail].
divided among four house owners.
Destroyed by fire From – Kerry Evening Post, 15 February 1845 An appeal is being made to the public on behalf of Mr. John Lynch and his family who were so severely impacted by the late dreadful fire in Dingle. The poor man not only lost his wife but has been reduced from comparative wealth to complete destitution as a result of the conflagration. The receipt of almost £20 has already been acknowledged by Mr. James McKenna. We have much pleasure in seeing the names of Lord Ventry and Lt. Clifford [Coast guard] at the head of this list. These are some of the parties whom the Dingle priests so liberally abuse from their altars every Sunday. Will the people of Dingle ever learn who are their real friends. Dingle fire engine From – Tralee Chronicle, 14 June 1870 Fires are very rare in Dingle but this is no argument against providing a fire engine. Nobody knows when a fire may occur and if any of the town’s large houses take fire a whole side of a street may be destroyed. It should also be remembered that very few houses in the town are insured. A fire engine can be bought for around £200. It could be placed in the charge of the police or the coast guards who would be trained in its use.

Lovers drown One of the four passengers on board the longboat was a young man named Elford Thorpe, from County Carlow. He and one of the passengers still on the ship, a young woman from Scotland, were intending to marry on reaching New York. As the longboat lifted in the swell the young woman jumped from the ship but failed to reach the longboat and plunged into the waves. Her fiancée leaped into the sea as she sank and managed to bring her to the surface. The longboat had drifted away by then and the lovers were seen clinging together before sinking beneath the waves. The Blaskets After battling the elements for three days and nights the Middlesex survivors came in sight of the Blasket Islands on the morning of the fourth day and made their way into the Sound. Seeing their predicament, some of the islanders set off in a canoe and brought the longboat to the landing place where two of the exhausted passengers dropped dead. One of them was a Killarney man named Quin. Island hospitality The survivors were brought to different houses on the island where they were to remain for some days because of bad weather before being taken to the mainland. The captain and crew expressed their deepest gratitude for being rescued and for the hospitality shown to them by the islanders during this recovery period. When they reached Dingle they were taken in charge by Lieutenant Hawkey of the coast guard and eventually made their way to Cork via Tralee. Rewards. A number of monetary awards were made to the islanders for the rescue and housing of the Middlesex survivors later that year, based on reports submitted by Lt. Hawkey. The RNLI awarded £1 to each of the canoe crewmen while the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariner’s Benevolent Society awarded almost £12 to be

Farming News Louis Murchan ANC PAYMENTS WORTH €185 MILLION ISSUED Payments worth €185 million million under the 2020 Areas of Natural Constraint (ANC) Scheme have commenced issuing this week to 86,000 farmers. This is the start of the annual payment round, and a welcome relief for the farming commumity, in these troubled times. It is also a welcome time for many other professionals and business’s that rely on farmers to receive their payments, so they they themselves can also be paid. Arrangements appear to be on target to facilitate payment of the advance of 70% under the Basic Payment Scheme with effect from 16 October 2020. In line with last year’s arrangement, the payments currently issuing are an 85% advance payment on the ANC Scheme. 15% balancing payments are due to commence in early December. As in previous years, not all ANC applications are currently cleared for payment. In particular, many farmers have yet to satisfy the annual average stocking density of 0.15 livestock units per forage hectare for the calendar year. However, farmers have until 31st December 2020 to do so. Such cases will be processed for payment once this requirement has been confirmed. Regular pay runs will continue in the coming weeks to ensure cleared cases are processed for payment as quickly as possible. Farmers should submit any outstanding stocking evidence in support of their application to the Department’s Portlaoise Office as soon as possible to facilitate the early release of payments. OUTBREAK OF AFRICAN SWINE FEVER IN GERMANY Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, it happens again……. It’s almost like that famous scene from Stephen Spielberg’s JAWS, when Brody says that “you’re gonna need a bigger boat”. We’ve suffered CoronaVirus since February, while it has been at large since Late November. Now it looks as if we are to expect outbreak(s) of Swine Fever. The Department of Agriculture (DAFM) has drawn our attention to the identification of African Swine Fever (ASF) for the first time in Germany. ASF which is a deadly disease of pigs and wild boar was confirmed last week in the eastern area of Spree-Neisse within a few kilometres of the Polish border. ASF virus, which is highly fatal for pigs and wild boar, does not affect humans and poses no food safety risk. Reports to date indicate that the infection involves a single wild boar which was found dead and there have been no reports of the disease in domestic pigs in Germany. The Department has confirmed that there has been no importation of live pigs from Germany into Ireland this year to date. ASF first entered Poland in 2014 and has been spreading in the wild boar population in the western part of the country since November of last year. EU legislation controls the movement of pigs and pig products from areas affected by ASF in Poland. Wild boar have played a major role in the spread of the disease in mainland Europe through their natural movements and interactions. Ireland does not have a sustainable wild boar population, but the virus can also be spread through other ways including contact with infected live pigs, contaminated clothing, footwear, vehicles and equipment and the consumption of infected food waste by pigs. The World Organisation of Animal Health reported that ASF currently affects more than 50 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa including 12 EU Member States in 2020. ASF virus has had an enormous impact on the pig sectors of affected countries as a result of international trade restrictions being imposed. The importance of the pig sector in Ireland is recognised, with pigmeat exports estimated at €941 million for 2019 according to Bord Bia. The Department would like to take this opportunity to reinforce the message of the need for extreme vigilance on the part of all pig owners to ensure that robust biosecurity measures are implemented on their farms, to prevent pigs from accessing food waste and to ensure that pigs do not come into contact with contaminated clothing, vehicles, footwear or equipment originating in ASF affected areas of the world. Furthermore the Department once again reminds all travellers to avoid bringing back any pork or pork products from areas affected with ASF. GLAS LESS APPLICANTS Farmers in GLAS who opted for the Low Emissions Slurry Spreading, are advised that the LESS Declaration Forms are now being 14 West Kerry Live
issues, and need to be returned to the Relevant GLAS section in Wexford on, or before 31st October 2020. Failure to do this is highly risky, as in most, if not all cases, this option was chosen as an in to those who didn’t have sufficient conservation-type land. This is therefore their compulsory option. If they do not complete their tasks, they are loable to be kicked out of the scheme, on inspection with a resultant 100% penalty of all payments issued since 2016. This is an important form, and it needs to be dealt with and returned, so please look after it. You are not required to enclose receipts with this form. They must be kept by you with your record sheets and be made available for any inspection. To be eligible for payment for LESS, the minimum volume of slurry to be applied annually is 50m3 . For ease of calculation, 1m3 is equal to 1,000 litres (220 gallons). A copy of the relevant record of movement of organic fertilisers form (Record 3 or equivalent form) MUST be attached to this application, where slurry is imported onto the holding. MEET IRELANDS NEW FARMERS Eva Milka is Polish and came to Ireland in 2005 to work in the hotel industry, but started growing snails as a hobby in 2011, in her apartment, in Kilkenny. However, she soon turned this hobby into a business, through hard work and adapting the existing knowledge she had of snail breeding. Through trial and error, Milka realised that for snails to be ready for market in September, she needed to start breeding in January. She breed 20,000 snails in the loft of a shed, on tables in Co Carlow. They are watered and fed every day and they lay their eggs in pots. Their eggs are then harvested onto incubation trays that are then put into an incubation room for 15 days at 20 degrees Celsius. Once the snails hatch out, they are kept on tables in a polytunnel for 4 to 8 weeks, from where they are transferred to plots in a field. This is all done on half an acre (0.2 hectares) divided into 10 sections where vegetation is grown for the fattening stage. Land predators are kept away with corrugated iron fencing and netting over the plot keeps the birds out. Five tonnes (600,000 snails) are produced on this half acre plot each year. Most of the snails are sold to France, Italy and Spain with only two per cent sold on the Irish market as Gaelic Escargots in brine or marinated with chilli and garlic. Milka is now keen to develop new markets for her snails in Dubai and Singapore. In the last few years, Milka scaled back production from one acre so that she could concentrate on developing a distribution hub for more than 10 other snail farmers throughout Ireland. Since 2016, she has also trained would-be snail farmers on one-day courses held throughout the year. Milka estimates the start-up costs for a snail farmer to be about €20,000, which includes a polytunnel, fencing and nets. She sees snail farming as a good option for innovative farmers. “Snail meat is high in protein and low in fat. Global warming is working in our favour because there are warmer nights in the summer time now in Ireland and it’s becoming too hot to grow snails in Spain and Italy.” How about that for a business idea. It may no be for me, and it may not be for you, but it’s a good venture and there is a good market for it on the mainland. Anyone interested in it should follow the snail-trail. It’s slow but sure. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938 (B Ag Sc, Dip EIA Mgmt) Agricultural & Environmental Advisor

Therefore, we want to help people speak Irish every day, between native speakers, people who don't speak Irish too often and people with a small bit of Irish. Next year's census will ask about the use of Irish. We will be hoping to improve the number from 2016, because there was a fall in daily Irish speakers from 2011 to 2016. Small Changes: Eco Driving Transport accounts for over a third of all of Irelands greenhouse gas emissions. A lot of strategies on reducing these emissions focus on the promotion of public transport, walking and cycling. These are viable solutions in urban areas but these options are limited or not practical in rural areas like West Kerry. Furthermore, public transport and car-pooling are less attractive choices since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. A complementary strategy is to improve the sustainability of the national car fleet and to this end the Irish government has set the ambitious target that by 2030 all new cars and vans sold in Ireland will be zero emissions (e.g. electric). Even if the required infrastructure is put in place and this target is achieved (just 0.3% of the 2.2 million cars on Irish roads are currently electric), there will still be a considerable number of petrol and diesel cars on the roads (over 66% of the country’s car fleet is currently more than 5 years old). If you are dependent on your car for most of your transport needs but drive a vehicle which is more like a model T than a Tesla, there is another option to make your transport more energy efficient and climate friendly. Eco driving is an approach to driving which leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a lowers the amount of fossil fuel that is imported. Importantly, there is the added incentive that you could save as much as 25 % of your current fuel costs by adopting this style of driving. The specific actions that constitute eco driving include reducing driving speed, reducing engine idling, vehicle maintenance, reducing drag and smooth acceleration/deceleration. SPEED To quote the tortoise from sminky shorts ‘shlow down tommy, you’re going too fasht’. Travelling at 120km/h uses 20% more fuel than the same vehicle motoring at 100km/h and driving at 80 km/h uses 15% less fuel than driving at 100 km/h. Not only would driving at a slower speeds reduce the rates of accidents and reduce CO2 emissions but would also result in substantial savings at the petrol pumps. SMOOTH DRIVING Sharp braking and hard acceleration both result in higher fuel use. In order to save fuel while driving you should always strive to maintain a smooth and even pace. Allowing plenty of distance between your car and the vehicle in front of you allows time to read the road ahead and avoid sharp braking. The faster an engine spins, the more fuel it uses so taking heed of engine speed (as measured in RPM on your dash) and using your gears appropriately is a good way to reduce fuel use and emissions. You should aim to switch up gear as early as you can. In most vehicles it is best to switch up when you reach 2000RPM in a diesel car or 2500RPM in a petrol car. Ease off the accelerator when going down hills and move down gears to slow speed or to come to a smooth stop (remain in gear though as coasting reduces driver control). ENGINE IDLING A car with a two litre engine burns approximately a litre of petrol an hour while idling. If you know that you are going to be stationary for more than a minute then turn off the car. During the winter months dress appropriately rather than turning the car on to heat it up (this also causes engine wear)and scrape ice off windscreens rather than leaving the car idling to melt it. TYRE PRESSURE- One of the easiest things to do to reduce emissions is to check the tyre pressure on a weekly basis. Underinflated tyres are both dangerous (they can cause accidents by increasing stopping distances and reducing steering responsiveness) and costly as they can increase fuel consumption as much as 5%. Over inflated tires are also dangerous as they decrease traction and cause the thread to wear more quickly in the centre so tyres need to be changed more frequently. You can find the recommended tyre pressure for your car online or it is often printed on the inside of the fuel door. VEHICLE MAINTENANCE Avoiding having a mechanic carry out routine service and maintenance on your vehicle costs money in the long term. Oil and filter changes, replacing the timing belt etc. ensure the engine and other components operate in an efficient manner for longer thus helping

to save money on fuel. AERODYNAMICS & WEIGHT The heavier your car, the more fuel you will use. Lighten the load by ensuring you remove heavy items as soon as possible e.g. shopping, bags of compost, pet food etc., Roof racks, roof boxes and cycle racks all increase drag (reduce aerodynamics) on your car which means you will need to burn more fuel to compensate (as much as 20% more). If they are not in use, remove them to ensure your vehicle is more streamlined. Driving with the sunroof and windows open at higher speeds will also decrease the cars aerodynamic efficiency. Use the ventilation system in the car instead. ELECTRICS All electrical accessories in the car e.g. heated windscreens, air conditioning, demister fans, use a lot of energy so do not have them on when they are not needed. .Cars with air-conditioning for instance use 5% more fuel per annum than the same models without air-con. PLAN JOURNEYS: Once an engine warms up it will operate at its most efficient whereas several cold starts will increase fuel consumption so consider planning to make one round trip rather than lots of short journeys when possible. Notwithstanding the limited transport alternatives, if there is an opportunity to walk or cycle then avail of it. Options such as parking the car outside of town and walking to the bank, post office etc. or dropping children off nearby schools and training grounds instead of trying to drive them as close to the door as possible would not only make a difference to our health but also be good for the environment.

Dingle Notes Richie Williams MIGHTY MÍCHEÁL. Belated 90th Birthday Wishes to Dún Síon native Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh whose voice carried gaelic games to all corners of the world for almost 60 years. Also his interest in and regular use of An Teanga Gaeilge certainly helped promote and strengthen the Irish language particularly over the past 20 years. Great gesture by RTE to present the only All Star Statuette of 2020 to Mícheál during the Late Late Show in Croke Park. Go maire tú cead Mícheál. COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD. Another lifetime service award this time to Burnham native Paddy Browne from his fellow Trustees in Dingle GAA Club. Paddy was the script writer behind the Kerryman Notes for this area for many years as well as PRO for the club and Secretary of the West Kerry Show Committee and several other voluntary groups also. Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland It is with great joy that our “wet” pubs have reopened this week after six months of closure. The heart and soul of our communities – they are integral to the social fabric of rural life. We are delighted to see the doors open once again and wish them a massive Welcome back to our lives – tá fáilte romhaibh ar ais. As families settle back into school life, it is great to see couples, young and not as young - walkers, cyclists, golfers, water activity and horse riding enthusiasts of all ages, out enjoying the landscape. While midweek has become that bit quieter, it is encouraging to see ‘staycationers’ staying locally and enjoying all our activities. Promotional Tips and Updates Autumn is going to see a steady stream of visitors wanting to enjoy the space and natural wellness that we offer here and so, make sure to promote all our exceptional activities and local experiences, lots of photos too, with reciprocal links from your business website. Fáilte Ireland’s €26m COVID-19 Adaptation Fund. This fund will help eligible businesses to offset some of the costs that was incurred in adapting premises and operations in line with Fáilte Ireland’s re-opening guidelines. Closing date: Thursday 8th October, 2020 It is worrying to see numbers start to rise again and is an ever present reminder that we cannot forget that we are living with Covid-19. With so much at stake with the ongoing threat of lockdowns, we must still manage the fundamental safety basics being mindful of our community by practicing safe social distancing, safe coughing etiquette, washing your hands regularly and wearing your face mask indoors and in queues. Also, with continued reduced capacity and space this autumn for pubs serving food, restaurants, cafes, activities, attractions and accommodation, pre-bookings and reservations are still advised in advance to avoid disappointment. Please avoid crowded areas and gatherings in the interests of your safety and well-being and the safety and well-being of our community. Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor CAMP FAIR On Friday last local sheepfarmers in keeping with tradition, put down pens and sold sheep at Camp as their forefathers have done for centuries since the time of Lord Ventry. And the dealers were there to buy up quality sheep, the Camp mountain breed of sheep for breeding and wholesome sweet meat, there is still no equal. Old friends were missed on the day and fondly remembered. A Photo tribute to John O'Donoghue of Castlemaine who passed away during the year was on display at the village. The caption, sadly missed but never forgotten, was truly a sentiment shared by all at Camp Fair who have great memories of John who never missed Camp Fair since he was a young lad. Rest In Peace. Due to Covid - 19, the Annual Camp Fair Sheep Show and The Pet Shows, Dog Shows and more had to be postponed. A sign of the times, however people relished and enjoyed the Mutton Pies, Mary's Pies at Camp Junction Bar and O'Dwyers Mace pies at the village they were delicious and much appreciated after a lovely morning in theblazing sunshine. It was a great day and heres looking forward to Camp Fair 2021. In the meantime may you and yours remain safe, well and healthy, God Bless !

GIRLS U 14 FOOTBALL Congratulations to Annascaul/Dingle U 14 girls who won Division 6 of the County League against an excellent Currow team last Sunday in a tense and exciting final. Currow had won both previous games between the sides but only a few points had separated the teams. Currow started brightly, playing fast direct football, and struck for three early goals. Some positional changes saw Ellie Hoare settle things at full back, with Sarah Casey, Saoirse Mehigan and Mae Griffin dominating in the half back line. Orlaith Murphy started to control the game from centre forward and we gradually settled into the game. The hardworking Líle Garvey and Rosie Deane were winning vital ball on the wings. Scores came from our dynamic full forward line of Norah O'Driscoll, Ciara Kennedy, and Hannah Granville. Orlaigh Clifford was reliable from frees, and an Orlaith Murphy penalty helped us to a half time lead of 4 -7 to 4 – 4.
BIRTHDAY Camp Fair Day, 18th. September is Mary Caseys Birthday. Mary from Annascaul always came to the Fair to celebrate her special day. A beautiful singer, she often entertained us too.
Facing into the wind for the second half, our girls really upped their game. Lead by the brilliant midfield pairing of Orlaigh Clifford and Grainne Dwyer we dominated the third quarter. Beibhin Sheehy was flawless in goal and Leah O'Connor, Molly Greaney and Hayley Flaherty tackled tenaciously to keep Currow scoreless for a long spell. Upfront Megan Brosnan and Ellie Fitzgerald came on, winning possession and driving forward. A brilliant point from Saoirse Mehigan and further scores from Megan Brosnan, Norah Driscoll, Ciara Kennedy, Sinead Murphy and Orlaigh Clifford saw us score 2 -4 without reply. The frantic final 10 minutes saw Currow get two goals and throw everything at us to try and win the game. Helped by Ciara Casey and Ciara Slattery we held out for victory on a scoreline of 6-11 to 6- 4. Joint Captains for Annascaul/Dingle were Grainne O Dwyer and Leah O'Connor.
Wishing Mary a very Happy birthday, hope she had

OBITUARY It was with shock and sadness that the people of Kerry received the news on Wednesday morning of the sudden death of popular broadcaster Sean Hurley, Radio Kerry. Sean presented and produced the popular Sunday Night programme Kerrywide on Radio Kerry. Sean is a huge loss to the Community of Kerry. He covered local events all over the county for the last 30 years, receiving many National awards for his work His last visit to Camp was to Ocean View Nursing Home and he was at Camp Sheep Fair last year and only a few weeks ago he put out an old piece on Ballinclare Fair on the show. Sean was a real gentleman and had a great way with people ! Sympathy is extended to Seans family and to his Radio Kerry Family. Go ndéana Dia trócaire ar a anam dilís.

even call it swede, who knows?
this, place in a fridge and leave it marinate for a few hours or overnight if possible.
Serves 6
Preheat the oven to 160ºC.
Ingredients
Take the pork from the fridge and leave to come to room temperature.
for the pork 3 cloves of garlic, crushed
Place the pork in a tray, add the cider. Cover this with foil and cook for about 3 hours. Check this about half way and add a little more liquid if needed (water will do if you have no cider left).
1 tbsn. chili flakes 5-6 sage leaves finely chopped attention. It doesn’t even get called by its proper name. We all call them turnips when in fact their real name is swede.
sea salt
500ml cider
Regardless of what you call it, I would guess that not too many people ever get excited about them.
for the swede
While we all may have had them mashed, try roasting them and you will find a sweeter flavour. Add chilli or sage and you will bring it to a new level.
olive oil
For this recipe I have sneaked it under a delicious slow cooked pork belly.
2-3 sage leaves finely chopped
Your butcher will get you pork belly but give them a few days’ notice. If you can’t get pork belly this will work well with pork shoulder (you may have to cook it for another hour or so depending on the size). Give this a go, you may be converted, you may
At this stage you can prepare the swede, add the swede to a large pot of boiling salted water. Cook it for about 6-8 minutes. Remove from the water and allow it to drain.
1.5kg pork belly with skin on
When the pork has cooked for 3 hours remove it from the oven, remove the foil and carefully lift the pork from the tray.
1 large swede, peeled and cut into large slices
Turn the oven up to 190ºC.
1 clove of garlic, crushed
Add the swede to the tray that the pork was cooking on, add a little oil, garlic, chili and sage. Season with salt and pepper. Place the pork on top. Put this back in the oven and cook for about half an hour. This will help to crisp the pork and give the swede a sweeter flavour.
1 tsp. chili flakes

‘When we first met, I was a child, and she had been dead for centuries. I am eleven, a dark-haired child given to staring out the window. Her voice makes it 1773, a fine day in May, and puts English soldiers crouching in ambush; I add ditch-water to drench their knees. Their muskets point towards a young man who is falling from his saddle in slow, slow motion. A woman hurries in and kneels over him, her voice rising in an antique formula of breath and syllable the teacher calls a caoineadh, a keen to lament the dead. A true original, this stunning prose debut by Doireann Ní Ghríofa weaves two stories together. In the 1700s, an Irish noblewoman, on discovering her husband has been murdered, drinks handfuls of his blood and composes an extraordinary poem that reaches across the centuries to another poet. In the present day, a young mother narrowly avoids tragedy in her own life. On encountering the poem, she becomes obsessed with finding out the rest of the story. Doireann Ní Ghríofa has sculpted a fluid hybrid of essay and autofiction to explore the ways in which a life can be changed in response to the discovery of another’s - in this case, Eibhlín Dhubh Ní Chonaill’s Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire, famously referred to by Peter Levi as ‘the greatest poem written in either Ireland or Britain during the eighteenth century.’ A devastating and timeless tale about finding your voice by freeing another’s.’ - Tramp Press

Castlegregory GAA CHAMPIONSHIP WIN FOR SENIOR LADIES: Plenty of action involving the Castle teams these last few weeks, though not so much opportunity for the community to experience it (until last weekend) times). However on Sunday 13th we were treated to a little footballing joy as our Senior Ladies (teamed up with Annascaul) did us all proud in winning the Junior C Championship Final in a nail biting encounter with Ballymac. With the superb streaming from Full-Time Productions we were able to experience all the action as it played out….a close encounter played in difficult windy conditions and it was a combination of more clinical score taking coupled with resolute defending which edged Castle-Annascaul ahead in the final few minutes to win by 4 points. Delight all through the two Parishes back West!.......and to top off a great fortnight last Sunday they defeated Beale/ Ballyduff in the Nth Kerry League (Div. 3) on a scoreline of 2-12 to 2-06. Also the club send their best wishes to keeper Ciara Butler who is now in full preparation with the Kerry Minors for their upcoming Munster Final against the winners of Tipperary v Cork. SENIORS: A long summer it has been for the Senior Men, not so much competitive game time but a successful Group stage in the Junior Championship, an early exit in the West Kerry Championship and all focus turned to last Saturday 19th, the Junior Championship quarter final against Cordal. A fantastic afternoon's football in Blennerville saw the Seniors advance to the Semi-Finals with a well earned win. A very even match up until the last fifteen minutes when Castle drew away. Fitness, organisation, fine finishing, determined defending and a huge desire were all on the
Castlegregory - Annascaul Ladies: Junior C Champions field for our lads. Final Score, Castlegregory 1-17 Cordal 0-12. Castle will now meet Beale in the Semi-finals with a provisional date set for Sunday Oct 4th. On side note the Club wants to extend their thanks to St Pats Blennerville for an excellently organised / stewarded venue last Saturday and it was fantastic to be back able to experience the action from the sideline. MINORS: The Minors finished up their 2020 campaign with a slight disappointment as they were given a walkover by Tralee side Na Gaeil in their final fixture. This coming after 2 very impressive displays in earlier rounds of the Group 1 campaign, a draw against the powerhouse Austin Stacks and a strong win away to An Gaeltacht. A squad with a lot of potential but unfortunately given the times a lot of it unrealised. Big thanks to Coaches and indeed the lads and we hope now to see them advance to Senior level in the years ahead. Best of luck to the 3 club members still involved with the Kerry Minor panel.
Castlegregory Notes Hospice Committee: As we are unable to hold our Annual Coffee Morning this year we would be very grateful for any donations you would like to make to be left in our collection boxes located at Castlegregory in the Post Office, Spar and the shop in Cloghane. Also contributions can be given to any members of the Hospice Committee. Thank you for your support in this worthwhile endeavour. Castlegregory Community Council would like to convey their thanks to Mary Harrington and all who helped with the Bingo during summer.
COISTE Na NÓG: A lot of game time for the younger age groups through the late summer with the U16s: Nearing the end of the County League Div3 campaign the 16s had a fine win away to Castleisland Desmonds on Thursday last, winning by a score of 5-13 to 4-09 U14s: Have had a great run of results in recent weeks culminating in a 4th win on Sunday last when they defeated Waterville/Dromid 4-14 to 1-07, a result which sees them finish top of Division 3A U12s: Our talented 12s had the difficult journey out to North Kerry on Saturday last where they played Tarbert in a title deciding game. A great team performance again, (and there have been a lot of them week on week from this crew) but Castle were to come up just short on the scoreline, Castlegregory 4-07, Tarbet 4-10 CONTACT- for all news, fixtures, reports you can follow CASTLEGREGORY GAA through Facebook (Facebook.com/CastlegregoryGAA) or for any further information contact the club at email:secretary.castlegregory.kerry@gaa.ie

Is feidir an chuairt a dhéanamh ag Áras Bhréanainn, ar Zoom nó is féidir linn teacht chugatsa agus bheith amuigh fén aer, dul ar an dtráigh, dtí’n clos spraoi nó ar shiúl dúlra Bíonn cluichí, comhrá agus comhluadar i gceist. Tá tamall mhaith ann ó úsáid roinnt leanaí an Ghaelainn is fiú an t-alt faoi iamh a léamh a thuismitheoir. https://tuairisc.ie/tubaiste-do-ghaelscoileanna-agus-gan-aonteagmhail-ag-daltai-leis-an-ngaeilge-le-se-mhi/ Má tá Gaelainn agat cheanna féin tugann sé deis eile dod’ leanbh í a labhairt le duine eile nó má tá tú ar bheagán Gaelainne b’fhéidir go dtabharfadh na cuairteanna muinín duit do Gaelainn a fheabhsú!
It’s up to us as parents to support our children in their endeavour to acquire and enrich the Irish language especially as it is integral to their education. If you’d like to give your child more opportunities to hear Irish then you should consider a home visit. Many children didn’t have the opportunity to speak or hear much Irish in the past 6 months. This would help them not to feel overwhelmed linguistically now that they’ve returned to school. We’ve had to think outside the box this year as a result of the pandemic but there are always ways around things. You can choose to come with your family to Áras Bhréanainn , have a Zoom visit from your home or we can come to you but we’ll need to be outdoors which could be lots of fun. The home visit involves conversation, games and encouragement. It’s another opportunity to speak Irish and if you only have a little it might spur you on to learn more!

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Cuireann an cosán agus an t-ardán atá in aice le foirgneamh na Fundúireachta go mór leis an an amharc agus le suainseacht an Bhlascaoid agus a mbain leis. Tá radharc ann ar a dtugtar radharc Choillí, a chíodh na cearca a bhí ag siúl timpeall na dtithe sa Bhlascaod. Ní amháin go raibh a radharc géar ach bhí sí míorúilteach Ní raibh aon ghá ag Çoillí dul dtí dochtúir lena dhéanamh amach an raibh a radharc ag ceiliúr nó ar fónamh. Tá Fomhar na na nGéanna, go tugann daoine Indian Summer gafa tharainn i mbliana agus ciorróidh sé an gheimhreadh dúinn. Is dócha go dtabharfadh do gheall cáirde dhuit teacht ar ál géanna sa cheanntar. Cad as a thagann na huibhe géanna nó an bhfuil dearmad orm, gur in uibhe géanna seacláide amháin atá spéis? Níl aon bhaint aige le na géanna fiáine. Bhíodh blianta maithe ann go mbíodh barra mór féir agam. Bhí trí chéad go leith caora ann. Bheadh ithe ag baint leo. Sa bhFómhar bheadh cúram déanta ag feirmeoir pioca an féar tirim nó‘téite’ a bheadh aige. Nuair a bheadh Meán Fomhair ag teacht ar an saol bheadh foráiste na bliana bailithe isteach ag gach feirmeoir. Dá mbeadh an aimsir briste is mó do fhéar a loghadh nó lofa ag an síor bháisteach. Bhíodh a gcúram déanta ag furmhór. Níorbh aon mhaith dhuit bheith ag glaoch ar chabhair ag deire Lúnasa mar bheadh gach aon duine ar séirse ag bailiú isteach óna ngarraithe. San am tuigeadh dom go dtagadh tamall do aimsir bhreá i Meán Fhómhair nó tús deire Fomhair. Gaoth anoir agus grian a mhairfeadh idir cheithre lá nó seachtain, agus sin an uair go dtugainn féin fé. Bhí mo chóta bán déanta mar thagadh gasra ceolmhar i gcabhair orm. Bheadh idir cheithre lá agus seachtain dea- aimsire agam. Bhainfeá é agus chróthfeá é an chéad lá agus an dara lá chroithfea é agus d’iompófá é. Bheadh sé breá tirim. Dá mbeadh sé tuartha go mbeadh cúpla lá eile d’aimsir mhaith bheith birt le déanamh, dó agus an lá ina diaidh isteach sa bhóthan agus é brea tirim. Cúpla bliain bhí féar spártha agam agus bheartaíos cuid dhó a dhíol. Glanfadh thar oiche é. Inniú níl ach dhá lá maith uait mar sadhlas atá ag beagnach gach aon duine. Bain ar maidin é. Iompaigh tráthnóna é, ar maidin deintí staitheanna dó agus isteach leis tráthnóna slán sábhálta. Víoras Deire Fómhair agus gan dabht beidh an víoras chugainn. Is dócha gur é seo an dara babhta aige ag gabhail chugainn gan cead ná fáilte. Níl an scéal chomh holc agus a mheasfá. Is dócha gur Ciarraí ceann dos na ceanntar is lú go bhfuil daoine buailte aige. Is víoras é seo mar is eol duit go bhfuil slad déanta aige. Tá sé ráite ag an uachtarán Trump go bhéadfadh vaicsín bheith ann roimh Nollaig nó luath sa bhliain nua. Creid é más maith leat. Má claíotar le treoracha lucht leighis maolóidh ar neart an víorais. Tá postanna i mbaol agus daoine ag milleanú poiliteóirí. Ní cliuiché poilitíochta é seo, mar ná feadarís ná go mbualfeadh sé tú féin. Ní abhar gaisce gan vaicsin a thógainrtnuair a bheidh ar fáil, ach caint agus bleadar gan bhrí ná crích.
Cuirfidh Naomh Peadar fáilte roimh Mhaidhc. Fear uasal. Bheadh scéal cleachtan aige duit aon uair a tharlódh sé leat. Ní bhíodh sé riamh ag canrán ná searúsach fé éinne. Ní bhíodh sé riamh ag gearán. Dá mbuailfeá isteach chúcha dhéanfadh sé maitheas duit. Is mó ubh circe a bhí agam a bhuíochas do Mhaidhc. Ar dheis Dé a anam cleachtúil macánta.
