An Fhéile Bheag Filíochta:
An Béiceachan / The Screecher
Léacht na féile
As told by Nora O'Donnell in January 1935 The first time the Screecher was ever seen in Macha na Bó he appeared amongst the cattle in the form of a dog. They did not know what was wrong with the cattle. They began to bellow as if some dog had attacked them so the people of the house went to see what was wrong and they saw nothing but the cows were very cross. They came in home and after a little while the cows were making such alarm that they had to go the second time to see what happened.
Aoine 6 Mí na Samhna, óna 8in beidh an nasc chuig an léacht ar fáil ar leathanach Facebook na féile ag http://feilebheagfiliochta.com 'Mo Shlán go Gleann aoibhinn an Mháma': Imirce in Amhráin agus Filíocht na nDaoine'. Le Seán Mac an tSíthigh, craoltóir agus fear béaloidis. Ceardlanna Filíochta Ar-líne / Online Poetry Workshops Satharn 7 Mí na Samhna, ag tosnú ag 10rn Don bhFéile Bheag Filíochta 2020 beidh dhá cheardlann filíochta ar-líne á reachtáil faoi stiúr beirt fhilí aitheanta: ceann as Gaeilge le hÁine Uí Fhoghlú agus ceann as Béarla le David Wheatley. Saturday 7 November, starting at 10am The bilingual poetry festival An Fhéile Bheag Filíochta 2020 will be hosting two online poetry workshops led by acclaimed poets: one in Irish with Áine Uí Fhoghlú and one in English with David Wheatley. This time they noticed an animal in the form of a black dog going amongst the cows. They were terrified and returned home. They didn't hear of him again until the beginning of Winter. One night they heard a terrible roaring around the house something similar to the noise made by a goat when choking. They locked the doors tight, fearing he might come in. That same year they heard this screeching very often, once on the chimney top. One night they were returning from Glenahue. They had a horse and car and a load of stuff and the car was upset, evidently it must have been the Screecher that did it. Three or four men who were releasing the horse saw it in the shape of a barrel rolling along a little distance from them, so they heard it very often after.

One night Paddy O'Donnell was returning from Glenahue. It was rather late. When he was halfway in he heard it on the top of the hill and he ran as fast as could in order to reach home before he would meet it, but it was on the doorsteps before him. He had to take refuge in a hayshed that was near and bolt the door tightly before he could get into him. It was said that it never crossed the river. Two police from Cloghane met it on the top of Connor Hill in the shape of a barrel. They had to carry the priest in to celebrate Mass in Macha na Bó they were getting so much afraid of it and in time it banished it. Generally in mountainy districts he was seen and heard, such as Coum Dubh and Connor Hill and Baile an Lochaig. In the form of a black dog or barrel it was generally seen. this reduced rate in place until December 2021 in order to provide significant additional support to businesses throughout 2021 when hopefully our economy and society can start to return to some form of normality. “
Caroline Boland Hello folks, I hope you are all keeping safe and well. What a Halloween – I think the weather has been appropriate for the mood but with the following extract of Minister Donohoe’s Tourism and Hospitality VAT Rate announcement, the next few weeks will give us some time to plan Christmas for those who hope to and can reopen and onwards to 2021 where for now and for the most part, we are looking at another ‘Staycation’ year. On Friday 30th October, Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe T.D. was pleased to announce that, in line with his announcement in Budget 2021, the VAT Rate for the tourism and hospitality sector will drop from 13.5% to 9% from Sunday, 1 November. This rate reduction applies to catering and restaurant services, tourist accommodation, cinemas, theatres, museums, historic houses, open farms, amusement parks, certain printed matter, and hairdressing. This change came into force on 1 November 2020 and will last until 31 December 2021. “I understand that many businesses remain closed for now and those that are open are operating at significantly reduced capacity. I am putting
“This measure represents targeted, timely and temporary support to those areas of the economy most deeply impacted by the public health restrictions………The introduction of a 9% VAT Rate for the tourism and hospitality sectors alongside other measures such as the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme and the Covid Restrictions Support Scheme forms an important part of the Government’s economic response to the pandemic.” Some practical ideas for the coming weeks and months in preparation for 2021: 1. And Now for Something Completely Different… Irene Ní Fhlannúra
There is no getting away from Donald Trump, Covid19 and the shenanigans in the Dáil with everything looking a little hairy to say the least! No better way to introduce this week’s article and take your mind off things for a moment, than to “comb” through some noteworthy tips to keeping your locks in good shape! Much like the skin, the condition of your hair can be an outward sign of your inside health. In times of illness, trauma or major life events it is not uncommon to see dramatic changes in hair condition in the subsequent weeks or months. With time, the hair usually recovers following such upheavals depending on our ability to adjust and cope. For most people the loss of hair condition is a gradual process that has more to do with the everyday stuff rather than any single traumatic experience. Genes, ageing, certain medications and hormones have a significant influence on hair quality, but dietary involvement should not be “brushed” aside when you want to give your hair some TLC. From an evolutionary aspect, we were much hairier when we were bent over half-naked on all fours as hair helped protect us from the sun, kept us warm and trapped dirt. Being hairy back then was a plus for our survival. As we evolved upright, onto two legs and knitted ourselves a few jumpers we no longer needed so much body hair. We developed other strategies to protect ourselves and keep us warm and soon enough our head hair became more aesthetic than functional. For modern day humans hair has been relegated to a non-vital status and is one of the last ports of call when all the good nutrients, vitamins and minerals are being dished out. Nutrients from our diet are allocated to the most vital of organs first and to fuel the most demanding body systems. When it comes to glossy, lustrous locks our nutrition must be more than adequate for the essential functioning of the body to have something left over for the less important things like hair. There is no “one” super vitamin or mineral that will ensure continued growth and condition of the hair. Our hair, hair follicles and scalp utilizes a variety of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fats as long as they are plentiful and consistent in the diet. Today’s diet has become deficient in many of the key nutrients our hair needs and this coupled with the added stress of modern living has wreaked havoc on our hair. Hair is mainly made of protein and the quality of the protein we eat can influence the hair life cycle and its ability to grow and renew itself. Lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, legumes, nuts and seeds in their most natural form are good sources of proteins. Sulphur is the third most abundant mineral in the body, after calcium and phosphorous. It is needed to produce keratin and to strengthen hair follicles, as well as having plenty other roles in the human anatomy. Found in low quantities in foods such as garlic, onions, broccoli, leafy vegetables, swiss chard and watercress it is also available in powder or capsules. Some studies demonstrated hair quality improvement when subjects supplemented with Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) – although these studies are small they are promising. MSM is commonly included in joint, bone and skin supplements and has some good science backing it up. Low iron stores (ferritin) is a major cause of hair loss as it disrupts the nutrient supply to the hair follicle affecting the growth cycle and resulting in excess shedding. Iron rich foods include red meat, liver, eggs, lentils and blackstrap molasses which need the assistance of vitamin C for 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
optimum absorption of iron. The collagen that surrounds the hair also relies on vitamin C so ensure you are getting plenty of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables all year round. Zinc and Silica are two more minerals important to hair health. While they can be supplemented, food sources of silica include cucumber, mango, green leafs, beans, celery and asparagus. Silica is also found in horsetail (herb) and nettles which are often used as a hair rinse for weak, brittle hair. Among some of the foods high in zinc are pumpkin seeds, organic meat, fresh oysters, brazil nuts, eggs and pecans. Vitamin E is required to protect hair from UV light and prevent breakage. Vitamin E foods include sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almonds, pinenuts, spinach, avocado and olives. B-complex vitamins particularly biotin and vitamin B6 can boost rejuvenation, prevent thinning and increase scalp circulation. B-vitamins are almost always lost through refining of grains so choose wholegrain foods such as unrefined buckwheat, pot barley and whole wheat products. Rosemary essential oil is also noted for scalp circulation and can be added to organic hair products or mixed with a little coconut oil for a homemade hair mask. Omega 3, an essential fat found in oily fish, flaxseed, walnuts and avocado helps strengthens and hydrate the hair shaft. It is remarkable that as we have become less hairy through the ages, we have become more precious about the little bit of hair on our head. We often try to mask our lack-lustre hair with increasing amounts of chemicals and harsh hair treatments - which eventually can become more of a cause than a solution to a bad hair day. A truly nourished head of hair is the by-product of great inner health and well-being which is ultimately our finest feature! Fatal Accident in Dingle Harbour
About three weeks ago the most powerful steam tug on the Mersey, the Resolute, was sent to Castlegregory but because of the continuing stormy weather has been unable to get the Lexington free of the shallow shore.

Jailed for Kicking Wife
Last Monday, the 7th of April, A dinghy from H. M. Pluto, with two sailors and the corporal of Marines on board, was making its way from the ship to shore when it suddenly capsized throwing the men into the water. One of them was able to swim to shore but the other two were trapped under the boat.
From – Kerryman, 25 February 1905
A fishing vessel approached the stricken dinghy and managed to get the men on board. The local coast guards were also involved in the rescue and the men were brought to the coastguard watch house in Cooleen. The coast guards, with the aid of neighbours, succeeded in keeping one of the men alive but the unfortunate corporal of Marines died. The names of the survivors are Edward Launcelott, who swam ashore, and Thomas Haley. The deceased’s name was Clout.
Samphire Light
Haley was fortunate that coast guard Edward Stack managed to resuscitate him by following the Humane Society’s recommendations for the restoration of life in such cases. [Admiralty records show that Edmund Stack, not Edward, was transferred from the coastguard station in Hollywood, County Down, to Dingle in 1835].
Destroyed by Fire From – Tralee Chronicle, 11 September 1847 On Sunday, September 5th, a house was maliciously set on fire in the townland of Ballyoughtra in the parish of Dunurlin. It was unoccupied at the time. The previous tenant was an officer of the Coast-guard. The house was owned by Mr. Henry McCann. Some evil disposed persons set the comfortable lodge on fire from the outside.
Blasket Survey
John Moriarty, Goat Street, was sentenced at Dingle court, to six months hard labour for kicking his wife. The defendant stated that his wife was the cause of it all as she had thrown a kettle of water on his head. It was his third offence.
From – Belfast Mercury, 14 June 1854 The Ballast Office, Dublin, hereby Gives Notice that a lighthouse has been erected on the Western Samphire Island, County Kerry from which a light will be exhibited on the evening of the 1st day of July, 1854, and will be lighted during every night from sunset to sunrise. It will be seen at a distance of about 9 miles.
Drowned in Dingle Harbour From – Kerryman, 3 October 1908 A freak accident resulting in the death of one man occurred in Dingle harbour last Saturday evening. Bad weather forced the schooner David Mees to seek shelter in the harbour but struck on a bank on entry. Her small boat was lowered with four men on board but when getting the anchor over the side, it struck the small boat and capsized it throwing the four men into the sea. The captain shouted for help and was heard by the crew of the fishing trawler Maid of Cove. They lowered their small boat and rescued three of the schooner’s crew but one man had been drowned. The rescuers were Michael Devane, Thomas Brown and John Devane. The drowned man was named as George Attridge.
From – Tralee Chronicle, 11 September 1847 The Admiralty sent a steamer to carry out a survey of the waters around Inishikillane and Inishnabro. It has been suggested that the proximity of the two islands would make a safe harbour large enough to accommodate the British fleet.

Our readers will remember the wreck of this splendid clipper ship, the Lexington, which happened in late August at Castlegregory Bay. Fortunately all crew and passengers were rescued despite the tremendous Atlantic waves that roared onto the beach. A boat was launched and manned by Mr. Cooper, the chief boatman of the local coast guard station along with three other coast guards and a volunteer boatman named Dan McCarthy. With exceptional skill, daring and courage they reached the stricken ship and managed to save all on board. Those rescued were; the captain, the thirteen crewmen, three mates, the West Kerry Live 13
Farming News Louis Murchan UCD Launches New Crop Science Degree Programme This may be of interest to young budding agricultural advisors, preparing for Leaving Certificate 2021, and considering your options in the coming CAO Application. UCD has added a new entry to its agricultural science offering in 2021. Crop Science has been added to the degree programme list. Previously, students with an interest in crops generally enrolled in the Animal and Crop Production degree programme, but those with an interest in a career in agronomy, can now take a more focused route. The new programme is the only third level Crop Science degree programme offered in Ireland. The graduates will meet the increasing demand for highly-qualified graduates in the area of crop agronomy. The degree plans to address a skills shortage in the sector, which was identified by the Department of Agriculture. The tillage sector has a huge role to play in the future of Irish agriculture and in meeting the needs of consumers. The growth in the distilling and brewing sectors, as well as the demand for food-grade oats, requires excellent agronomic management, as well as supply chain management. Premium markets need to be developed and retained. Students will also learn about the positives that the sector can have on climate change, carbon sequestration and the production of locally-sourced protein for the human and animal food chains. For those familiar with the agricultural science degree programme first year will remain largely the same with a grounding in the basic sciences. Year 2 will see the addition of agricultural botany and arable crop management, as well as the core subjects of soil science and microbiology. Year 3 then becomes more focused. Students will study plant diseases, pesticide use, integrated pest management, control of weeds, soil science and nutrition, as well as completing professional work experience. Year 4 will see students study farm business management, cereal production, organic agriculture, forage production, emerging crop pathogens, climate and soils and plants and diets. €138 million in GLAS advance payments to commence this week The 2020 advance payments under the Green Low-Carbon Agri Environment Scheme (GLAS) will commence this week, two weeks ahead of schedule. €138 million will arrive in almost 40,000 GLAS farmers’ bank accounts this week. These advance payments at a rate of 85% of the full annual payment are an important support to farmers in the delivery of key environmental actions. They are also of importance to the wider rural economy. In order to facilitate farmers wishing to contact the department regarding their GLAS payments, extended hours are in place for the GLAS Helpline that will be open from Monday to Friday and on the morning of Saturday, November 7, and Saturday, November 14, up to 1:30pm. The GLAS Helpdesk can be contacted at 076-1064451. DAFM extends BDGP extension. There will be a €40 million allocation of funding for a one-year extension for the first tranche of the Beef Data and Genomics Programme (BDGP) scheme, which will allow current participants who are in the scheme the option to either exit this year or to continue on for an additional year. The details of exactly what farmers will be required to do during this roll-over period have not been confirmed by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. However, speculation suggests that it will more or less involve the same elements which farmers would have undertaken during their previous years in the scheme. This would mean that farmers, who are open to the idea of remaining in the scheme and may have had plans to possibly reduce the number of 4 or 5-star females in their herd, would need to consider their actions carefully in the coming weeks. It is expected that it is going to be more of the same and farmers are going to have to genotype their animals in the spring. It is assumed the department is waiting to examine the availability of funding from the European budget, once Brexit and the impacts of Covid-19 have been factored in. N & P Statements to 30 September 2020 now available The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine has announced that interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period January to September 2020 are now available on the Department’s online system 14 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
www.agfood.ie. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year, in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation the limit is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. SNAIL FARMING: EARN UP TO €40,000/ACRE Heliculture, commonly known as snail farming, is the process of raising edible snails. Snail farming is a niche farming concept which has evolved here in recent years. They are currently over 35 farms that are farming snails in Ireland and are located throughout the country. It might seem unbelievable but earnings of €40,000/acre are possible. Sales of 10 tonnes of snails can be achieved on one acre of ground yield a potential revenue of €40,000. The system of production, that is typically pioneered on the internet or literature, is heavily influenced by practices in central Europe. These involve the use of breeding rooms where populations of breeding snails mate on breeding tables in warm chambers. The snail, being a hermaphrodite (has male and female reproductive organs), means that each snail can produce 100/150 eggs. Two weeks after mating, the breeding snail will bury the eggs in containers containing soil that is subsequently moved to polytunnels. Two weeks later, the young snails will emerge from the soil and will remain in the polytunnels for two months before being move to the outside. The main part of production use to take place in the breeding rooms or polytunnel but can now be carried out entirely outside in the snail units. Indoor production system (as practised in central Europe is mainly so because of the more severe winter weather common over there, and also the greater abundance of cheap labour. The main advantages of the outdoor system are the reduced labour requirement, lower energy bills and improved working conditions. Breeding rooms required 4/6 hours labour each day over a 4 months period as the rooms have to be cleaned daily. Outdoor snail units are divided into open pens that contain triangleshaped wooden structures. The Irish climate is ideal for snail farming where they thrive in damp, wet weather and will cleverly retreat into their shell during extreme heat or cold. The wooden structures allow dry food to be placed on top when they come out to feed at night. The meal is derived entirely from plant and vegetable protein. A 5mm pellet form of the ration is currently being trialled that is specifically formulated for the wetter climate in Ireland. The triangle structure allows for a better environment for the snails to grow. It also eases the harvesting of snails as they are easily picked when lifting the individual boards. Netting covers the entire area and galvanised sheets primed with an electric fence on the border prevents them from escaping. The breeding season occurs during June-September. The last batch of snails is restricted to an area of the outdoor unit in order to encourage breeding. Between 25,000 and 30,000 breeding snails are required to populate a one-acre site. (Now, here’s the bit when you cover your childrens eyes, and read silently!) After mating, the adult snail will lay eggs in the ground. This signals the end of the lifecycle of the adult snail. Young snail will emerge from the ground to begin their lifecycle. In between these wooden structures, a green crop is sown to provide shelter from the elements. Mustard or Rapeseed are ideal, however in harsh conditions mustard suffers from not being able to survive the winter and is also a source of human allergies in some cases. Clover is also a possibility, with trials on-going on its suitability. Harvesting of the snails occurs three times a year in February, late March, and May. This is when the snails reach 7/8 months in age. Anyone thinking of this can plan harvest time to be separate from lambing, calving or intense farm activities such as during the silage season. The snails are purged, netted and exported to the continent for processing. One of the biggest obstacles facing snail farming in Ireland is the lack of a dedicated processing facility. Courses are being run for any person interested in learning more about this alternative farming enterprise. YOUNG FARMER SCHEME (YFS) APPLICANTS DAFM has written to all Young Farmer Scheme applicants with some helpful advice on how to meet the scheme terms and conditions and avoid inspection penalties. All applicants will receive the letter via their AgFood account. The Young Farmers Scheme (YFS) was introduced in 2015 as a top-up to
the BPS. It is accepted that the creation and development of a new farm business is financially challenging and this payment is intended as an income support to young farmers starting their agricultural activities to facilitate the initial establishment of the farm business. A young farmer is eligible to apply if he is under 40 years old in the first year of application, has a Level 6 Certificate in Agriculture and is in financial and managerial control of the holding. The YFS is paid for five years. The detailed eligibility requirements are set out in the Terms and Conditions on DAFM’s webpage. There is a wide variety of arrangements and circumstances in place on farms when young farmers are starting off. In order to help young farmers make sure that their own arrangements meet the requirements of the YFS, the Department has written to all scheme participants to highlight some of the key requirements that must be in place to be compliant with the financial and management control requirements of the scheme (the most common reason for penalties) .

The most common reasons for failing Young Farmer inspections are • Some of the farm business transactions are not going through the farm bank account - that is the account in the Young Farmer’s name. • The one farm bank account is being used by the Young farmer and another person who is farming separately. A joint account is acceptable as long as the other person named on the account is not farming separately. • The Young Farmer cannot show when asked that s/he is actively involved in running the farm and has full knowledge of all the enterprises on the farm. All scheme participants are urged to check that they comply with these key requirements in order to remain eligible for YFS and avoid loss of payments. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938 (B Ag Sc, Dip EIA Mgmt) Agricultural & Environmental Advisor

Looking for Fungie Kieran Murphy When the last boat turns to harbour, up the throat of Dingle Bay, the search ends. The motor sprays, white wake spreads, buoys lurch, dip their heads to the empty sea. Clouds, grey, riding darkness, dim the day. ‘He’s gone dancing,’ someone says to me. Twilight was the time of your best show since you never liked to see us go, launching, flipping, flash of belly’s sheen, falling back, a graceful splash, then up again, arching silhouette between lighthouse and the Reenbeg sea stack, as if calling, ‘Wait. It’s not night yet. Stay with me a bit. I’m not done playing.’ Time and tide. No matter how you tried you couldn’t hold the moon’s rise over Beenbawn cliffs, planets moving slow and stubborn as the old Dagda, or stem the surge that floods An Chois and swallows Sláidín Beach to the wall twice daily, rocks and all, just for fun, relentless swell that drowned the King of Ulster’s son. We’d all agree that forty dolphin years went by too fast. Now, as the last watchers leave the shore in ones and twos, spirits sore, sharing non-news from their phones: ‘Coming home. Can’t do more.’ Stars appear, smudged in water. Alone, I fear you’ve swum off into local lore like Brendan, Mór, and Ryan’s Daughter. And what is left except the cold touch of the slack East wind upon the cheek, and too much sea, black and silver sleek, stretching to MacGillycuddy's Reeks, lacking verve to raise a wave goodbye. I’ll wait, if you don’t mind. I’m not the kind to cry, even thinking of your service, the daily bedlam, flapping sails, nervous swimmers, face masks leaking, engines churning, oarlocks creaking, big boats, children’s heads between the rails. It’s a circus, lovers preening, tourists leaning out, then you surface, expel air to whoops and shouts, captivating as you duly leap away their cares. Silence, shadowed ocean, stars remain. Where did you go? Are you ill? In pain? At peace? In motion? Are Dingle crabs feasting on your frame below? Are you awake? Found a mate and frolicked off on honeymoon? I smile, remember how you drenched my wife on our first date. Gone too soon, this day, this little life. I’ll stay awhile, and when I sleep, I hope to meet you dancing in the deep. 16 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Mí na Samhna tagtha agus súile gach aon duine againn ar an Nollaig amach romhainn! Ná bíodh aon drogall oraibh an crann a chaitheamh in airde agus an ceiliúradh a thosnú píosa beag luath i mbliana, dhéanfadh cúis dearfach mar sin ana mhaitheas dúinn ar fad is dócha! Chuige sin, tá cúpla deascéal Gaelainne anseo againn daoibh chomh maith. Tá go leor tograí, mar is gnáth, ar siúl againn do mhuintir Chorca Dhuibhne, agus idir é sin agus ár gClár Oibre a réiteach dár dtríú bliain (atá ag teannadh linn!) táimid ana bhroidiúil ar fad le cúrsaí pleanála teanga i gCiarraí Thiar.
Tá cúpla spás fós fágtha sa ghearrchúrsa do chúramóirí leanaí a chlúdóidh roinnt stór focal agus nathanna cainte a bheadh úsáideach do dhaoine a bheidh bainteach le cúram leanaí. Ag tógaint uimhreacha go fóill!
Deascéalta! Good news stories! • Deinimid comghairdeachas mór le Breanndán Ó Beaglaíoch a fuair cead pleanála i mBaile na bPoc tar éis feachtas 15 bliana. Nach mór an faoiseamh dó é tar éis na blianta fada a chuir isteach, agus an scéal curtha ina cheart. A big congratulations to Breanndán Ó Beaglaíoch for securing planning permission in Baile na bPoc after a 15-year campaign. Isn't it a great relief after putting long years into such a process that some positive news has come from it. • D'fhreastail na sluaite ar Oireachtas na Samhna ar líne i mbliana agus bhí ana rath ar an na himeachtaí. Bhuaigh Sibéal Ní Shéaghdha agus Rósín Sheehy duaiseanna sna Comórtais Litearta - comhghairdeachas leo! Beef Casserole with Cheese & Herb Scones Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School
087-2565569
Muddy Matters Dog Grooming CLOSED DUE TO COVID RESTRICTIONS RE-OPENING DECEMBER 1ST CALL LYNNE TO BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS
1 onion, sliced garlic cloves, sliced 150g of smoked bacon, cut into chunks 1 leek, white part cleaned and sliced 2 carrots, peeled and roughly chopped bunch of thyme 1 bay leaf 1 tsp. tomato puree 300ml of red wine 500ml of beef stock salt & pepper
Scones baked on top of a casserole give it a lovely topping, think of it as a pie topping but some of the dough will soak some of the juices from the casserole while the top should be slightly crunchy. Not only does this dish look good when it comes out of the oven but it tastes delicious too. This is an easy recipe and well worth the little extra work to make the scones for the topping. The cheese adds a little richness to the scones, so look out for a good cheddar such as Derg cheddar, this will work really well with Coolea mature cheese too. A little tip is to make a little extra scone dough and bake the leftover dough (20 mins on a tray in an oven at 180ºC) just as savoury scones for lunch. Ingredients For the casserole rapeseed oil 500g of diced beef (ideally from the chuck) 1 tbsp. of flour 20 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
For the scones 450g plain flour 1tsp. baking powder A pinch of salt 120g butter, cubed and chilled 140g Good cheddar or Coolea cheese 340ml of milk 1 egg, beaten for egg wash small bunch of parsley and tarragon, chopped finely Method Preheat the oven to 160ºC For the casserole In a bowl, add the beef, flour, salt and pepper. Toss this well. Heat a large casserole pot over medium heat. Once hot add a little oil and then the beef. Allow this to brown (you may have to do this in stages to keep the heat high). Once all the beef has browned, remove this from the pot and reserve for later. Turn the heat down and add a little oil. Add the
087-1309803 onions and bacon, cook for about 5 minutes, add the garlic and cook for about 2-3 minutes, add the leeks, carrots, thyme and bay leaf. Continue to cook this slowly for about 5-8 minutes. Return the beef to the pot and add the tomato puree. Cook this for a minute or so, add the wine and reduce by half. Add the stock and a pinch of salt and pepper. Place the lid on and put this in the oven for about 2 hours. For the scones You can make these while the casserole is cooking. In a bowl add the flour, baking powder and salt. Mix this then add in the butter. Rub in this in until it forms a sandy texture. Add in most of the grated cheese and all of the herbs. Mix this in, add the milk and bring this to a dough (this can be all done in a mixer or by hand). Cover this with cling film and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes. When ready, roll out the dough to about 4cm thick. Use a round cutters to cut scones from the dough. Turn the heat up to 180ºC Once the casserole is cooked and the meat is tender, remove from the oven, place the scones on top of the casserole. Wash with the egg wash and sprinkle with the remaining cheese. Place this in the oven for about 25 minutes without the lid. The scones should be brown and cooked through. Bain taitneamh as!!

Small Changes: Night Skies
prevent and control. 1. The simplest and most effective action is to turn off lights that are not needed. Switch off lights when leaving a room. Draw the curtains; it helps reduce light pollution and keeps heat in the room. Reduce the use of decorative lighting inside and outside your home. Floodlights used to illuminate homes and garden are particularly inefficient as they shine light over a very wide area and are expensive to run. Floodlights and garden lights can both have negative impacts on nocturnal pollinators. 2. Invest in motion sensor lights. There are certain areas that will require illumination outside for safety e.g. porches, driveways; but these light do not need to be on constantly. The use of motion sensor lights helps to cut light pollution.
When the clocks are put back an hour at the end of October most of us feel that the long dark nights of winter have set in. Yet, the fact of the matter is that there are very few places left on the planet that have truly dark skies overhead. Only 5 per cent of Ireland's sky is unpolluted by artificial light. Sadly, 45 per cent of Irish citizens cannot see the stars of the Milky Way as a consequence of light pollution while a shocking 18 per cent of the population live under night skies so bright that they use daytime colour vision to see. An inability to witness a starry night sky might seem like a small tradeoff for all the advantages artificial light provides in our modern society. The benefits to commerce and for public safety cannot be argued with and we are no longer constrained by light for work, travel or recreation. Light is so pervasive in our lives though that many of us do not recognise that the glow from TV screens, computers and smartphones is actually a light source. The effects of light pollution (the inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light) are far from limited to washing out starlight from the night sky but recognition of the extent of these negative effects is relatively recent. To begin with, an obvious problem with excess use of lighting is the huge waste of energy which contributes to unnecessary carbon emissions. The rise of LED lighting is more energy efficient but most white LED lights emit higher levels of harmful ‘blue light’. Blue-rich white light has been demonstrated to compromise human vision (particularly in the aging eye). It is also known to increase glare and this is of particular concern on our roads. Scientific studies have shown that artificial light at night (ALAN) and blue-rich white light in particular, disrupt the circadian rhythm; a natural internal process that is important in regulating the sleeping and feeding patterns of all animals. Alteration of the circadian clock in humans may increase the risks for obesity, depression, diabetes and cancer. Night-time exposure to artificial light is also known to suppress the production of a hormone called melatonin. A lack of melatonin contributes to sleep disorders and depresses the immune system. Light pollution is even more impactful on plants and wildlife as they depend on the daily cycle of light and dark to help regulate behaviours such as reproduction, sleep, feeding, avoiding predation, movement and migration. Specific examples of how ALAN disrupts critical behaviours include the disruption of photosynthesis in plants, trees undergoing budburst earlier in Spring and the disruption of nocturnal breeding rituals in frogs and toads. Bats desert their roosts due to too much luminance, migrating birds can become disorientated and very high numbers of bird fatalities are attributable to collisions caused by their attraction to bright lights on buildings at night. The greatest detrimental effects of ALAN are on thousands of species of insects and spiders including beetles, moths and wasps, which evolved to use light levels as cues for courtship, foraging, navigation and the avoidance of predators. In addition to being a critical component of most ecological foodwebs, insects are vital to ensure food security (three quarters of all food crops require insect pollination), soil health and pest control. Despite their crucial importance, half of all insect species may have been lost since the 1970’s and over 40% of known insect species are currently facing extinction. Habitat loss, pesticide use and climate change are all instrumental in the decline of insects worldwide but ALAN is now recognised as a very important yet often overlooked driver of what is being described as ‘the insect apocalypse’. Unlike most of forms of pollution, light pollution is relatively easy to 22 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
3. Where outside lighting is necessary, covered/shaded bulbs that face downwards (instead of lighting up the sky) and are directed only where needed is recommended. In addition, there is difference between an area being well lit and brightly lit. A lot of security lights can often be up to 20 times the power (brightness) required for a domestic setting. 4. LED lights greatly reduce energy usage but blue-rich white LED lights should be avoided both inside and outside the home due to the negative effects associated with them for both humans and wildlife. Choose lights with a warm colour tone (look for bulbs with a colour temperature of 3000K and below) in order to reduce blue light emissions. Darksky.org have a list of colour temperature apps that can be downloaded to phones, laptops, smart T.V.s etc. which adapt the electronic screen to the time of day in order to reduce blue light emissions. 5. Many of these solutions are applicable in commercial and public settings but Dark sky Ireland and Bat Conservation Ireland have great resources for businesses and public bodies committed to reducing ALAN for both environmental and financial purposes. These solutions protect both human health and wildlife health in addition to long term financial savings. If these weren’t enough of an incentive to reduce ALAN, a relatively new benefit of dark skies is one of sustainable tourism. Our neighbours in South Kerry have been able to promote a dark sky reserve to stargazers due to the lack of light pollution since 2014 (the south Kerry reserve is one of only three gold tier dark sky reserves in the world). It’s well worth a visit on a clear night. Le thart ar 30 bliain anuas, tá iarrachtaí déanta ionad ealaíona agus cultúrtha a fhorbairt sa Daingean. Tuigeann Údarás na Gaeltachta agus Comhairle Chontae Chiarraí go bhfuil gá agus tábhacht lena leithéid d’áis agus go rachadh sé chun leasa an phobal i gcoitinne. Tá an dá eagras tar éis teacht le chéile chun tacú le tréimhse taighde ina bhfiosrófar na féidireachtaí agus na céad céimeanna eile chun an fhís seo a fhíorú don gceantar.
For over 30 years, people in West Kerry have sought to develop a dedicated centre for culture and the arts in Dingle. Údarás na Gaeltachta and Kerry County Council believe that this is an important and needed facility in the area and one which would benefit the whole community. Supported by Ealaín na Gaeltachta, these two agencies have come together to undertake a scoping exercise and identify practical next steps to make this ambition a reality for the area.
Tugtar cuireadh dóibh siúd a bhfuil suim acu sa togra freastal ar sheisiún eolais ar líne ar an Mháirt, an 17 Samhain ag a 5 i.n. Roinnfear samplaí d’ionaid ealaíona eile agus tabharfar léargas ar shaghsanna difriúla d’ionaid, ar conas a fheidhmíonn siad agus ar conas a rachadh a leithéid d’ionad chun socair na n-ealaíon, an phobal agus an gheilleagair áitiúil. De bharr na srianta a bhaineann le COVID-19, tarlóidh an seisiún eolais ar líne. Fáiltíonn People Place Consulting roimh aiseolas agus tuairimí i scríbhinn chomh maith. Chun clárú don seisiún ar líne agus/nó chun d’ionchur a bheith san áireamh, seol ríomhphost chuig caoimhincorrigan@gmail.com.
Interested parties are invited to attend an online information session on Tuesday 17th November at 5pm. During the session, People Place Consulting will share examples of other arts centres in Ireland and offer some initial insights into how different types of centre could work and support the arts, the community and the wider economic development of the area. Given current restrictions in relation to COVID-19, the information session will take place online. People Place Consulting also welcomes written submissions in relation to the project. To register for the online information session, and/or to make a written submission in relation to the arts and cultural centre, please email: caoimhincorrigan@gmail.com.

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís The kick-off meeting for the 3-year EU Ploutos pilot was held on Oct 22nd and 23rd where 33 partners from different countries were introduced to each other (online!) and learned more about the many different levels of expertise that will be made available through this project. The first step is to establish a Ploutos Innovation Academy where a panel of experts in sustainable business model development, technological innovation and social, environmental and economic impact assessment will be formed. All of the Sustainable Innovation Pilot (SIP) groups, of which West Kerry is one, will work with the academy for the duration of the project to leverage this expertise for their communities. There are eleven SIPs in total including wheat producers from Italy exploring new insurance mechanisms, fruit producers from Greece developing technology to support proof for CAP payments, the French crowdsourcing co-operative C’est qui le Patron (Who’s the Boss?) empowering over 4,000 producers and 14 million consumers and a Slovenian pilot to develop a soil passport for soil health and sustainability. We will all work with the newly formed academy in the coming months to design our respective pilots for maximum benefit and impact in our communities. It is worth noting that there were 21 applications to this fund of which 7 reached the minimum threshold and only 3 were selected for funding so it is a wonderful opportunity to have all of this knowledge and expertise at our disposal - it’s just up to us to make the most of it now! Those who wish to pre-register their interest can do
so by emailing info@dinglehub.com and many thanks to all of you who have already done so. We will keep you informed as work progresses and as we gain further understanding of the appropriate time for people to become involved. Beidh Seachtain na hEolaíochta ar siúl an tseachtain seo chugainn, 8-15ú Samhain, agus tá áthas orainn a rá go mbeidh na Hack Aeráide ar súil arís i mbliana leis na scoileanna. Beidh innealltóirí fuinnimh áitiúla Dónal Ó Céilleachair agus Sam Moriarty ag cabhrú le daltaí scoile Chiarraí chun réitigh á fháil ar dúshlán ó thaobh fuinnimh inathnuaite, téamh tithe agus iompar. Anuaraidh, thóg Coláiste Íde, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne agus Meanscoil Nua an Leith Triúigh páirt san hack pílotach. Beidh an Hack ar fáil do na scoileanna go léir i gCiarraí agus Corcaigh agus beidh tacaíocht ar-líne ar fáil ó na innealltóirí agus na saineolaí MaREI i mbliana. Tá tuilleadh eolas agus clarú ar fáil anseo: https://www.marei.ie/science-week-corkscience-festival-2020/ Science Week will run next week from 8-15th November and we’re delighted that the Climate Hacks for schools will take place again this year albeit in an online form. Local energy engineers, Dónal Ó Céilleachair and Sam Moriarty will guide Kerry students as they develop solutions to address renewable energy, home heating and transport challenges. Last year, Coláiste Íde, Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne agus Meanscoil Nua an Leith Triúigh took part in the first pilot run of the Climate Hack and this year it is now expanded to enable all Kerry and Cork schools to take part. Support from the engineers and MaREI energy experts will be available online this year. Further information and registration can be found here: https://www.marei.ie/science-weekcork-science-festival-2020/ A reminder that Level 5 restrictions means that the Dingle Hub is closed to all except those who are dependent on broadband connectivity to provide essential services for the duration
Castlegregory GAA AGM - SAT. NOV. 7th As per GAA guidelines, CLG Caisleán Ghriaire will be holding its AGM virtually on Saturday, November 7th 2020 at 8pm. We will be sending link to those who wish to join meeting. We ask that if you are a Club Member and have not received Notification of AGM already by email that you send your email address to secretary. castlegregory.kerry@gaa.ie. We appreciate this is not ideal for some members but we ask that players and younger members assist their relatives and friends to join. No further nominations for positions or motions will be accepted. Thanks to everyone who has contributed to keeping our Club operating in 20 KERRY LADIES v CAVAN Great delight in the club to have Ciara Butler lining out in goals for the Kerry Senior Ladies in their opening Group 1 Championship match against Cavan on Sunday last. At only 17 years of age, Ciara (who is also plays in goals for the Kerry Ladies Minors) put in a great performance in Kerry's convincing win. No doubt about it , Ciara is only just starting out on her journey representing Kerry and we all at the club look forward to following her progress! 24 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
of the Level 5 restrictions. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in the near future when possible and in the interim we will continue to work online to support our remote working and learning community on the Peninsula. It is in all our power to change the course of this virus so if we can double down, keep our distance and stay vigilant on sanitisation measures then hopefully we can all return to a more flexible level of restrictions in the near future. Have you recently started working from here? Are you considering a part-time or permanent move to the Dingle Peninsula? Are you self-employed, remote working or a start-up business? Perhaps you are in a position within your business to bring remote working opportunities with you and build a team from here? We want to hear from you!! Please connect with us at info@dinglehub.com and help us build a vibrant, diverse and dynamic community and network. It’s not necessary to need a physical desk or office space (and indeed we can’t offer this for the duration of Level 5 restriction) in the hub to be part of this wider community. We’d also love you to connect with us on social media platforms - Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook. Fánaigí slán, sábháilte. Stay safe and well everyone. We remember Fungi and all those who feel his loss. We are grateful for all he did for the town and locality. Just to encourage people to keep connected with our faith. People are encouraged to tune into Mass on Saturday evenings at 6.15pm or Sunday mornings at 11.30am. When logging on for Mass set some time aside, free of distractions. Maybe light a candle. Try to resist the temptation to do household chores as you follow the Mass. During the month of November the list of the dead will be placed in front of the Altar and will be prayed for at all Masses. There is much good news in our faith. This is often found in the lives of the saints. If you have a moment during the month of November why not go online and try to find out more about a particular saint and what inspired them to the Christian life. West Kerry Live 25

outdoor open areas to use during the various lockdown periods. The Mental Health of people has been and is going to continue to be severely tested in the months ahead while the Covid Virus spreads around the world. We can all do our bit by obeying the basic guidelines but more importantly keeping an eye out for other people who might be feeling the effects of depression, loneliness or other visible mental or physical fatigue and suffering in silence. So get out there when the weather allows for regular exercise every day and enjoy the wonderful open spaces and environment in your locality. Some useful contact numbers which may help people in need of support.
BOOKS. With the shortening daylight hours at this time of year we all spend more time indoors and get the opportunity to read more books, papers and magazines. FUNGI. As time goes by without any sight of Fungi people have been asking about some sort of annual commemoration or festival in his memory. Judging from the enormous interest by the national and international media in his story we must surely keep this precious mammal in the ongoing Dingle story in the years ahead. So get your thinking caps on and let us have your suggestions before some other area gets there first. Research work is ongoing in the Harbour at present about the possibility of extending the western marine area to accommodate larger leisure craft. Further development will of course depend on the strength of the surface in that area to hold the weight of more buildings and associated pilons. Perhaps a Fungi Museum on the new site would be possible!!. COVID. We are so lucky in this Peninsula to have such a choice of safe

Most local shops and services are offering a phone in, call and collect or online service to the public and customers are requested to think local before taking the option of buying from outside groups. Your money spent locally will go a long way towards keeping people in employment in the Peninsula both short term and long term for our young people also. Dingle Business Chamber are making every effort to ensure the town will have some festive cheer this year but the usual parades and events will be cut back to the very minimum. In supporting local business premises and services you are also supporting the local outlets who sponsor all the clubs, groups and charity events which are organised in this locality annually. Most outlets are either contactable by phone or text or online or have contact numbers on the front of their premises and would appreciate your support. An interesting feature of the Covid lockdown is the way some traditional business outlets have adapted their systems to the takeaway food or call and collect model. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

Camp Notes Brigid O'Connor Obituary The news of the death of Eileen O'Shea nee Barry, Upper Camp was received with great shock and sadness on Tuesday last. Eileen was part of the life of the community of Camp all her life. She was born in 1950 into the Barry family who ran a Public House in the village, the eldest of 5 children of Batty and Siobhán Barry. At a very young age Eileen took over helping her mother running the farm when her father Batty passed away suddenly. She was an outstanding farmer, loved animals, milking cows and working the land was a joy to Eileen. Eileen married her childhood sweetheart Michael O'Shea and again farming with Michael became a labour of love. Eileen and Michael raised a fine family. Sadly 9 years ago Michael passed away after a long illness during which Eileen was his devoted and primary carer. Eileen was a lifetime supporter of Annascaul GAA and Michael and Eileen encouraged and supported their family whose contribution to the club both on the field of play and in administration is truly phenomenal. Eileen's daughter Mairead is Annascaul Club Secretary, Senior player, Gearóid, former players Kevin and Cathal and Annascaul Senior Team Manager David Clifford is her son-in-law. Eileen's grand children are now playing with Annascaul carrying on the family tradition. All the O'Shea and Barry family are deeply involved in the Annascaul GAA Club. Camp will not be the same without Eileen, the lovely hanging baskets and flowers she tended with great care at Camp Cross, the hours she gave so generously to the Active Retired and all the baking for community events over the years, she will never be forgotten, even the daily chats around the shop, sadly we will all miss very much. Elieen was laid to rest on Friday in Camp Cemetary alongside her dearly beloved husband Michael following requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Donal O'Connor at St. Marys Church, Camp. A Community and ICA Guard of Honour led the funeral cortege and people lined the way to the graveyard in large numbers as a mark of respect to Eileen who was highly respected in the area.
of the hall refurbishment was carried out in 2020. This included Sound, lighting, stage, floor sanding and varnishing, installation of audio visual system and screen and fire detection/alarm system. All works were planned and completed while retaining the use of the hall as a Sports Hall. It is now truly a multi purpose building which will serve the community and wider hinterland into the future. Upgrade work on the sportsfield was completed in May 2020. This included further drainage of the playing pitch and the development of a fully lit, walking/running track around the perimeter. The track was made possible through a generous Sports Capital Grant. Camp Community Council would like to acknowledge the good working relationship fostered with all the groups who use the facilities. Camp Community Council also acknowledges the funding support of NEWKD, Kerry Co. Council, Sports Capital and HSE. Camp Community Council is launching a Buy a Brick fundraiser. The brick bearing an inscription of your choice, 40 characters will be located onthe ramp at the entrance of the Community Sports Hall. €250 per brick. This is an unique opportunity for local families, individuals and businesses to support Community Development in Camp. Camp Community Council is approved for charitable donations and you can allow Camp Community Council to claim an additional payment through tax relief on your donation at no additional cost to you. This is a novel opportunity for individuals, families and businesses and indeed our diaspora to support the ongoing development work at Camp Community Sportsfield. Contact - Email - campbuyabrick@gmail.com. Please see Community Newsletter and Facebook page for further information Annascaul Walking Club Membership is now due for Annascaul Walking Club and priced at €45 for the coming year for full membership. Associate membership is also available. Pay through the bank if possible please. Remember you must be a paid up member to attend and vote at the club AGM on November 15th. Any questions please contact Mairead or email the club committee.
Ni Bheidh a léitheid arís ann. Sleep peacefully Eileen until we all meet again. R.I.P. The death has occurred of Canon Trevor Arnold Sullivan on 31st October, suddenly at his home in Ballinasloe. Canon Trevor is remembered with fondness in Camp while serving in the Diocese of Kilgobban, Church of Ireland and Dingle Peninsula. Trevor is especially remembered for his great ecumenical spirit of togetherness in the celebration of all Church events and occasion with all denominations and in the community. Deeply missed by his loving wife Doris, daughters Moynagh and Johanne, grandchildren Ellen and Samson, Matthew, Rachel and Eva, sons-inlaws, Mike and Ivan and extended family. His ecumenical ministry and peace-building initiatives over his lifetime leave a lasting legacy. He is remembered with gratitude and fondness in the wider Church of Ireland, by parishioners and friends from all faiths in the Aughrim and Creagh Union of parishes, the dioceses of Limerick and Killaloe, of Clogher and Armagh, and by all communities in Camp and on the Dingle Peninsula. Trevor’s chaplaincy work at Portiuncula and St Brigid’s Hospitals and the Athlone Institute of Technology brought solace and comfort to many. Funeral Private with a memorial celebration of Trevor’s life to be confirmed at later date. Sympathy is extended to his wife Doris and all the family and the Church of Ireland Community. Camp Community Council - Fundraiser Camp Community Council issued a Newletter last week. The Astro Turf has proved a huge success and is very much a focal point of the community facilities. Phase one of works on the Community Sports Hall which included Acoustics and complete rewiring of the building was made possible with the aid of NEWKD Leader funding. Community enhancement funding from Kerry Co. Council enabled the installation of new doors and wheelchair access and the erection of a canopy at the entrance to the hall. Phase two West Kerry Live 29
Naomh Mártan/Teampall Mártain – Páirc an Teampaill Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Tá Féile na Samhna ceiliúrtha againn um an dtaca seo, ach, tá féile eile go tiubh sna sála léi – féile, áfach, ná fuil an oiread sin tráchta uirthi lenár linn féin, ach a raibh ana-tábhacht léi i bhféilire ár muintire romhainn. B’é sin Féile Naomh Mártan/Máirtín a cheiliúrtaí ar an 11ú Samhain. ‘Naoi n-oíche agus oíche gan áireamh ó Oíche Shamhna go Oíche Fhéile Mártain’ 1 a deirtí sa ré úd i stair ár muintire nuair ba bheag trácht acu ar na míonna, ach gur féilte áirithe ba mhó a bhí acu chun tráthanna na bliana a mheabhrú dóibh fhéin. Agus mar bharr ar sin, ba thréimhse chinnte ama idir dhá fhéile den sórt céanna a bhí i gceist, mar is léir ón seanfhocal thuas. 2 Cuirim spéis i Naomh Mártan/Máirtín mar gur tógadh mé ar fheirm i bPáirc an Teampaill – baile fearainn i Lios Póil, agus i gcroílár na feirme tá seanláthair luathChríostaíochta ar a bhfuil fothrach sean-eaglaise suite i lios. Tagann an focal ‘teampaill’ ó templum na Laidine, a chaillaíonn foirgneamh do dheasghnátha creidimh is spioradálta. Seo a leanas mar a thráchtann An Seabhac ar an láthair úd: “Teampall Mártain (uaireanta T. Mártan agus, uair fánach, T. Máirtín. Tugtar, leis, An Teampaill Liath air. Deirtear gur in onóir do Mhártan, uncail Naomh Pádraig a tugadh an ainm ar an dteampall … Tá clós i bhfoirm leasa timpeall ar an ionad, agus tá rian sea-uaghanna istigh ann. Do cuirtí leanaí gan baiste ann go dtí le fiche bliain … 3 Bhíodh lá mór pátrúin ann Lá ’le Mártain – ceol is rince is ól, agus, is baol, achrann–go dtí tuairim cheithre fichid nó céad bliain ó shin.” Láthair thábhachtach luathChríostaíochta ón dara/tríú h-aois déag í, cé ná fuil aon stádas oifigiúil seandálaíochta stáit aici. Seo a leanas mír den mhionchur síos ón suirbhé suntasach seandálaíochta a deineadh ar an láthair fé choimirce Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne i dtús ochtóidí na h-aoise seo chaite, mar leanas: Templemartin Church: The ruins of the rectangular church, 10.3 x 4 m internally, testify to two building periods. The original church, a pre-13th century foundation, was subsequently extended eastwards, probably in the 15th/16th century… The central section (W gable) c. 2.2m in height preserves the original lintelled doorway, its head surmounted by a massive boulder. 4 Maidir le Naomh Mártan/Máirtín féin, tá ar a laghad cúigear naomh den ainm úd sa traidisiún Caitliceach. Is dóichí gur do Naomh Mártan Tours na Fraince (c. 316-397) a tiomnaíodh An Teampaill Liath toisc go dtiteann a lá féile siúd ar an 11ú Samhain Naomh Mártan sa Bhéaloideas Fianaise ar thábhacht Naomh Mártan i dtraidisiún ár muintire is ea a líonmhaire is atá scéalta is tagarthaí dá thraidisiúin sa bhéaloideas, agus a fhianaise sin go láidir i mBailiúchán na Scol, mar leanas, i dtús báire, finscéal ar Naomh Mártan ó bhailiúchán Scoil na Min Airde ó bhéal Eibhlín Bn. Uí Shúilleabháin (1858-1951), Min Aird Bhuí – Ellen Barrett ó Bhaile an Bhúlaeraigh ó dhúchas: Naomh Mártan Ins an tseanaimsir bhíodh cartacha ag dul ón áit seo go Corcaigh ag breith ualaí leo agus ag tabhairt ualaí abhaile. Bhí scata fear ón áit seo ina suí cois tine i dtigh lóistín i gCorcaigh oíche, agus dúirt duine díobh: ‘Dá mbeinnse ag’ baile anocht do mharóinn cearc nó gé nó ainmhí éigin in onóir Naomh Mártain.’ ‘Ó,’ arsa’n fear eile, tá sé geallta agamsa faid a mhairfead fuil ainmhí éigin do dhoirteadh Oíche le Mártain in onóir do Naomh Mártan. An dtabharfaidh sibh mo chapall agus ualach abhaile amáireach?’ arsa é sin, ‘agus imeodsa chun bóthair láithreach, pé am a shroisfead mo thigh.’ Ghealladar go dtabharfaidis agus as go brách leis. Níorbh fhada ar an mbóthar nuair a tháinig marcach suas leis. D’fiafraigh sé dhe cá raibh a thriall. ‘Ó’, ars’ an fear, ‘dúrthas liom ó chianaibh i dtigh lóistín gurbh anocht Oíche ’le Mártan agus tá deabhadh abhaile anois orm chun fuil ainmhí a dhoirteadh in onóir Naomh Mártain. 30 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
'Mise Naomh Mártan,’ arsa an marcach, ‘agus tair ar mo chúlaibh agus béarfad abhaile tu.’ Níor mhór an mhoill a bhí orthu nuair a buaileadh an fear síos ag béal a dhorais féin ins an Leitriúigh. ‘Ní chreidfeadh aoinne mé,’ ars’ an fear, ‘gurbh é Naomh Mártan a thug abhaile mé,’ ‘Fágfadsa comhartha agat,’ ars’ an marcach. D’iompaigh sé an capall mórthimpeall agus d’fhág sé rian chrú an chapaill ar an lic a bhí i mbéal an dorais, agus tá an rian san le feiscint go dtí an lá inniu. 5 Móitíf an mharuithe "do mharóinn cearc nó gé nó ainmhí éigin in onóir Naomh Mártain" Ag tagairt don mhóitíf seo fé mharú ainmhí d’Fhéile Naomh Mártan, is dóichí go dtagann an nós anuas ó thraidisiún réamhChríoctaíochta nó Págánach, agus an fhuil a croitheadh ar leac an dorais mar chomhartha áidh, agus mar chosaint ar an olc 6. Buaileann cúig cinn de thagarthaí ar thraidisiún mharaithe ainmhí linn faoin gceannteideal ‘Féilte na Bliana’ i mBailiúchán Béaloidis Scoil an Chlocháin.7 Na daltaí scoile á bhailigh a leanas óna muintir: 1.

Fáiltímid roimh an Foclóir Nua Béarla-Gaeilge. ‘Is foclóir comhaimseartha é an Foclóir Nua Béarla-Gaeilge ó thaobh ábhair, leagan amach, agus feidhmeanna cuardaigh. Tá 48,000 iontráil agus 145,000 brí sa leagan ar líne agus san aip, chomh maith le comhaid ghramadaí agus fuaime. Cuireann an t-ardán digiteach an foclóir ar fáil do chách i gcéin agus i gcóngar, agus tá ag méadú bliain ar bhliain ar úsáid an tsuímh: le linn 2019, mar shampla, thug 2.2 milliún úsáideoir uathúil cuairt ar www.focloir.ie, trian díobh sin ó thíortha thar lear. Nuair a cinneadh tabhairt faoin leagan clóite seo den Fhoclóir Nua Béarla-Gaeilge, ba léir ón tús go raibh i bhfad níos mó i gceist leis ná go díreach an méid atá ar líne a phriontáil amach. Dá ndéanfaí é sin, bheadh timpeall 4,500 leathanach sa leagan clóite, rud a d’éileodh cúpla imleabhar. Bhainfeadh sé sin d’inúsáidteacht an fhoclóra agus chuirfeadh sé go mór le costas a fhoilsithe. Chun foclóir aon imleabhair a chur ar fáil, ceann a bheadh soléite agus so-úsáidte, ba ghá an líon leathanach a laghdú go dtí faoi bhun 2,000. Chuige sin, díríodh ar dhá phríomhbheart: laghdú suntasach a dhéanamh ar chion ábhair an leagain ar líne (as an 48,000 iontráil atá ar líne, tá 31,000 sa leagan clóite) agus athfhormáidiú ó bhonn a dhéanamh ar eagar agus ar chuma na n-iontrálacha. Ábhar sásaimh agus bróid é an Concise English-Irish Dictionary a chur ar fáil agus an tionscadal dúshlánach seo a thabhairt chun críche. Ní hionann agus na mórfhoclóirí Gaeilge roimhe seo, áfach, ní ceann scríbe ach cloch mhíle é foilsiú an fhoclóra chlóite. Sa ré dhigiteach, is obair idir lámha é gach foclóir agus ní stadfar in am ar bith de bheith ag breisiú, ag cothabháil agus ag ceartú a bhfuil ar líne iontu.’ - Foras na Gaeilge An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Dea-scéalta againn ainneoin gaoth mhór is báisteach. Is coir agus ceart cógháirdeachas a dhéanamh le Seán Mac ‘n tSíthigh as an gradam atá gnóthaithe aige ón Oireachtas, mar iriseoir na bliana. Bíonn blas ar shaothar Sheáin pé ar Raidió na Gaeltachta nó RTE a bhíonn sé ag saothrú. Dheas leat a bheith ag éisteacht leis. Tá gradam eile againn an babhta seo do Helen Ní Shé agus ní hé a haon aici é. Tá sí deisbhéalach agus éifeachtach.Tá cur i láthair fónta aici coitianta. Tá deis-bhéalaíocht aici a thagann ar barr in aon agallamh a bhíonn aici.Tá greann ina cuid oibre nuair is gá. Seo beirt gur fiú iad a scaoileadh amach. Ceann eile a thaithnigh liom na an t-agallamh a dhein Edel Luibhéad le Tom Connor na Cille, cúpla seachtain ó shoin.Tá cleachta agus sport ag baint le Tomás. Is mó scéal agus eachtra ar bharr a theanga. Go bhfága Dia againn iad seo.

Cúpla ceist I Cén t-aonach a bhíonn ar an 23ú Meitheamh sa Mhumhain? 2. An mó tír go bhfuil teora acu le Luxemburg? 3. Cé’n contae is lú sa Mumhain? 4. An mó tir go bhfuil teora acu le Andorra? 5. Cad fé an mo tír go bhfuil teora acu le San Marino?
Rud eile a chuir ardú croí orm ná an chluiche iomána idir Luimneach agus Tiobrad Árainn ar an nDomhnach.

Trump Deirtear go bhfuil tranglam ceart fés na vótaí atá caite le cupla seachtain. Cinnte níl aon deallramh leis. Ba cheart do Lá an toghcháin a bheith ar aon lá amháin. Bhí breis agus 30% tréis vóta a chaitheamh roimh an lá mór. Níl bun ná bárr leis an gcóras sin. Sás mór achrainn do lucht achrainn.
1. Aonach Spancil Hil [Gach bliain bíonn Aonach mór capall ann ar an 23 lá do Mheitheamh] Tá amhrán aitheanta cumtha fén Aonach, Spancil Hill.
An Feirmeoir Tá an- éileamh ar stoc agus caoire le tamaillín. Tá aon uan le dealramh ag déanamh céad euro.Tá socraithe le déanamh ar bhonn Éorpach fé bheartais a oirfeadh don bhfeirmeoireacht agus ná luífi rómhór ar an bhfeirmeoir.Tá súil againn gur mar sin a bheidh. Tá sceón ar na Sasanaigh agus tíortha eile agus orainn féin fén Covid ach is dócha go gcaithfear claoí leis na rialacha pé acu an leibhéal a trí nó a cúig. Faid atá sé seo ar siúl agus airgead á chur ag an stát le cabhrú le daoine go bhfuil a bpoist caillte acu- ach beidh bhfurmhór ar ais mar a bhí nuair a claíofar an víras gránna seo tá súil againn. Tá agus beidh ualach mór fiacha ar scata. Scanródh na fiacha atá orainn agus a bheidh. Beidh an saol mór thíos le fiacha- brisfear scata comlacht ach caithfear beart a bheith réidh dan bfadhb sin.
2. Trí cinn. 3. Port Láirge. 4. Dhá cheann. 5. Tír amhain.
Bhí sé deacair a thuiscint go mbeadh cluiche chomh maith fé bharthanacht bháistí agus gaoth chruaidh. Is dócha go bhfuil sé seo go léir ag léiriú an t-áthas a bhaineann le cluiche maith is cuma cén sort aimsire a bhíonn ann. Dar liom go raibh an réiteoir bocht cráite fliuch agus go raibh imreoirí ábalta an dubh ‘na gheal a chur air. Nuair a sciob imreoir an sliotar don dtalamh lena láimh, cá raibh súíle an réiteóra? Fuair Tiobrad Árann báide á bharr. Ní cás a bheith ag caint ach ní féidir do aon duine gach feall a fheiscint. Is baolach ná raibh na maoir báide ná aon duine inairde sa seastáin ábalta an feall san a fheiscint. Mheasfá leis go raibh an réiteoir bog arThiobrad Árainn ar dtúis ach go raibh sé cothrom tréis tamaill. Déarfainn tréis an chatha go raibh a dhícheall á dhéanamh ag an réiteoir, lá ná cuirfeá an gadhar is leisciúla amach. Is fuirist don bhfear ar an gclaí a bheith ag caitheamh thairis. I ndeire na dála, an- chluiche. Ionadh liom gur chaill Corcaigh. An bhfuil na Déisigh ag ullmhú chun catha! Tá an- fhoireann iomána ag Corcaigh ach is baolach gur bhuaidh na Déisigh ortha. Ar m’anam ach go raibh Bleá Cliath go maith, ag feabhsú atáid agus cad fé na Gaillimheánaigh? Tá Ciarraí agus Corcaigh ag ullmhú do chluiche caide agus súil againn go soilseoidh grian an áidh ortha.
