Shop Local This Christmas 2020 has been an extraordinarily difficult year for many local businesses, especially those who have suffered long periods where they have not been allowed trade due to COVID-19 restrictions. The idea behind a Shop Local promotion is to encourage local people and employers to back local businesses, which in turn boosts the local economy and helps sustain local jobs. There is a countywide campaign in Kerry to encourage people to shop locally and spend locally this Christmas (shopkerry.ie). The campaign, which is being spearheaded by Kerry County Council and its local partners and stakeholders, will use local media and social media platforms to promote the ‘Shop in Kerry / An Siopa Áitiúil’ message. The aim is to encourage consumers in the county to support the local economic recovery by spending locally while observing all of the public health advice and restrictions. Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell said: ‘Spending locally in our shops and businesses across Kerry means supporting local jobs and maintaining employment in the local economy. Every euro counts when it comes to assisting the economic recovery in our county. ‘Keeping our towns and villages viable and vibrant is a central objective of the shop local

message. The COVID-19 restrictions have raised people’s awareness of local businesses and the vital service provided by local shops. We are asking everyone in Kerry, when it comes to their shopping to think local and shop local,’ she said. The new campaign emphasises that when shopping locally, everyone should adhere strictly to the government and public health guidelines on hand hygiene, cough etiquette, social distancing and the wearing of masks. Of course shopping locally is made all the more attractive when we have such a wonderful range of gifts right on our doorstep. From toys to art, food to fashion, books to activities, it's all there. And if you can't make up your mind on what specific present is required, most outlets will have vouchers, often the best present.

10 Reasons to Shop locally this Christmas SUSTAINABLE SUPPORT OF THE LOCAL ECONOMY -The local multiplier effect means that every for €1 spent in the local economy, almost half is reinvested locally in comparison to only 15 cent for foreign national companies

Yay, It’s Time for Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Did you know that like fruit and vegetables, every nut has its season? Fresh nuts are almost a rarity in this country. The majority of nuts in the shops are sold dried, powdered, puréed or canned. Nuts, in general, because of a high moisture content, do not store well and are nearly always dried before use. Sweet edible chestnuts are in season from now until after Christmas. Sweet Chestnuts (castanea sativa) grow on trees related to Oak and Beech and should not be confused with Horse Chestnuts (aesculus hippocastanum), which are of no relation at all - and are inedible. Horse chestnuts contain chemicals which are toxic to humans but some mammals such as deer, cows and horses (as the name suggests) can break these chemicals down and render them harmless. It is important to be able to distinguish between the two before you go-a-gathering! Sweet chestnuts are encased in a dense, spiny outer shell which looks like a small green urchin while the horse chestnut outer shell has shorter spikes with more spaces between them. The Horse Chestnut, with its spikes looks a bit like the Coronavirus, another good reason to stay away from it! Once the outer shell of either chestnut is opened and removed it is more difficult to spot the difference! Inside, both types of chestnut are smooth, shiny brown seeds known as a "conkers" which provided many of us with hours of entertainment back in the day! Horse Chestnuts Extracts from horse chestnuts have been used for ages in herbal medicine. Specialized, standardized horse chestnut extract may reduce the problems associated with poor circulation. This is due to a chemical, aescin, in the seed that support the integrity and strength of the vascular system and connective tissue. Horse chestnut seed extract is indicated for circulation problems in which the veins do not efficiently return blood from the legs to the heart. This condition is associated with varicose veins, leg pain, ankle swelling, itching, haemorrhoids and night-time leg cramping. It can be indicated for some causes of male infertility too. It is available as a topical gel that is applied to the afflicted areas, and also as tincture or tablets to be taken internally. Remember, that raw horse chestnut seed, bark, flower and leaves are poisonous to humans and only specially formulated extracts from reputable sources ought to be used. Sweet Chestnuts Whole sweet chestnuts are mostly associated with the festive season, roasting on an open fire and all that. Throughout Europe they were a reliable food staple long before the spud because of their unusually high starchy carbohydrate content. They are lower in fat and calories than other nuts yet they are considered a rich source of monounsaturated fat - the type of fat present in olive oil. A diet abundant in this type of fat is associated with the health benefits of a Mediterranean diet, famed for reducing risk of heart disease by lowering LDL cholesterol (bad) and raising the good HDL cholesterol levels. They are also high in fibre which is also a feature of the Mediterranean diet. The nutritional profile of these nuts reads like a prescription for great health - rich in B1, B2, B3, B6 and folates, important for energy, nerves and brain health. Sweet Chestnuts are unique in that they have a rich content of vitamin C, most other nuts do not have this claim to fame! Because of their tough outer skin, much of their vitamin C content remains intact even after roasting on an open fire! 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

In an age when much of our minerals are lost through poor soil conditions and cultivation practices, the minerals found in these naturally harvested crop tick all the boxes for bone health, heart health and in particular for men's health. Rich in calcium, magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, potassium and zinc - chestnuts are a great choice for maintaining good health and disease prevention. Whole sweet chestnuts are sold usually dried, although you can get them fresh or vacuum-packed this time of the year. If choosing fresh sweet chestnuts make sure there is no mould or brown spots on them. They should be firm to touch and not "give" when lightly squeezed. Store them like you would other vegetables, preferably in the fridge and they should keep up to two weeks. To prepare fresh chestnuts, make a slit in the brown outer skin and boil for 20 minutes. Leave them in the water while you peel them so the tough skin is easier to remove. To roast fresh sweet chestnuts them, soak in cold water first for 30mins, make the slit on the plump side and roast in a hot oven for 25mins. Remove from the oven and wrap in a tea towel which will make moisten and loosen the outer skin. Dried sweet chestnuts need to be soaked overnight before cooking and are a nutritious and delicious addition to soups, stews, stuffing and sauces. Ground chestnut (flour) is naturally gluten free and adds a depth of sweetness and flavour when added to other flours especially for cakes, breads, cookies and pasta dough. Chestnut purée is a perfect partner to any chocolate recipe. Put chestnuts on your shopping list this Christmas for warm, hearty cooking and a timely health kick - you'd be a nut not to! Peil i bParóiste Fionntrá sna 60aí Seán O Catháin Cé gur bhuaigh Ciarraí Craobh Sinsir Peile na h-Eireann i 1969 agus 1970 ní raibh éinne ó pharóiste Fionntrá ar an bhfoireann, an chéad uair ó 1941 nach raibh ón bparóiste ar phainéal buacach Chiarraí agus sin rud nár thárla ó shin i leith. From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Stranded at Claghane From – Tralee Mercury, 14 November 1838 Last Friday a brig named Palmyra was stranded at Claghane, near Brandon Head. The vessel was captained by William Read and was on her way to Italy with a cargo of stock-fish from Norway. The brig had experienced extremely tempestuous weather on her 31-day voyage from Norway. Lieut. Symmons of the Castlegregory coast-guards and Mr Dwyer, Chief boatman at Brandon coast-guard station moved quickly to assist the vessel’s crew and to protect her from plunder. A party of police also attended the stranding. All attempts to refloat the ship have so far failed and she lies high and dry at low tides.

Washed Overboard From – Kerry Star, 25 February 1862 One man was washed overboard and lost from the barque Flora while crossing from New York to Cork. The vessel was in extreme distress when she arrived in Kenmare Bay. Her sails were gone along with bulwarks and boats. She had shipped a great deal of water in her hold and was carrying a cargo of wheat. The ship was brought into Sneem Harbour by the coast-guards under the command of James Kearney White.[The report does not identify the coastguard station involved in this incident but it was probably either West Cove or Lackeen Point]

Ballinskelligs Tragedy From – Kerry Evening Post, 13 November 1847 A French brig has been wrecked in Ballinskelligs Bay. She has been named as the Camelia of Saint Malo and was carrying a cargo of bread stuffs. Initial reports stated that all of her crew had been saved. However, this proved to be false and it can now be confirmed that all of the crew have been lost except for a boy. The Collector of Customs, John Cronin, has travelled to the scene of the wrecking. [Bread stuffs usually referred to flour and may have been for famine relief].

Sale of Dingle Merchant’s Holdings From – Kerry Evening Post, 20 February 1869 Following the death of the well-known Dingle merchant Mr. Thomas Kavanagh his business and private holdings are being offered for sale. These include a dwelling house, shop and stores that can hold approximately 700 tons of grain. Included are a kiln, offices, lumber, coal, iron, salt, baking houses and stables. The total area involved is in the region of two acres. The tenure is the lives of the three eldest children of the Royal Family and sixty-one consecutive years. The ground rent is £1 10s per annum. For further information contact Thomas Kavanagh, Jnr., or William Collier.

in the town and that Lieut. Gore was making enquiries regarding available accommodation for them. It is understood that a company of infantry will be based in Dingle until the current unrest has passed. [The Government was afraid that Daniel O’Connell’s Repeal Movement of the 1840s would lead to armed insurrection or rebellion and took precautions to quell any such eventuality. The Stromboli was a wooden paddle steamer, launched in 1839, which took her name from the Stromboli volcanic island, off the south-west coast of Italy, and gave her name to the Stromboli Rock off Dunmore Head].

Tug-of War From – Kerry Evening Post, 10 August 1895 An estimated crowd of 2,000 gathered on Ventry Strand last evening, some of them having travelled miles, to witness a tug-of-war between the fishermen of Dingle and the men of Ventry. This Ventry team competed under the name of The Fionn McCuals. The teams were seen to be in first class condition and were loudly cheered on their arrival on the strand. A prize of two guineas awaited the winning team. Betting was brisk on both teams. M. Long captained the Ventry men while J. O’Connell was the Dingle captain. The Ventry men won the toss to decide which side to take at the start. They held their ground well for a while but had to give way to the strength of the fishermen. In the second round the fishermen made short work of the Ventry team and took the honours to wild cheers from their supporters. The Dingle team had been training for a week under the supervision of Head-Constable O’Sullivan of the Dingle R.I.C station.

Died From – Kerry Evening Post, 01 December 1897 John Robert Meeke, Medical Officer at Bonny, Nigeria, and eldest surviving son of John Meeke, Dingle, County Kerry. He was homeward bound on the mail ship Bonny and died on the 21st of November. He was buried at sea.

Wrecked at Smerwick From – Kerry Evening Post, 23 December 1854 A brig that was sailing from Limerick to London with a cargo of oats has been driven on shore at Smerwick harbour and is now a complete wreck. She is the Bride of Abydos [Egypt] and all of her crew of nine souls have survived the wrecking.

Military Preparations From – Kerry Evening Post, 25 November 1843 H.M.S. Stromboli arrived at Dingle harbour two days ago from her headquarters at Tarbert on the Shannon. Lieut. Gore, who was on board, came ashore and met with the local Magistrates. Following that meeting the ship headed to Ventry harbour and anchored there until the following morning when she returned to base on the Shannon. It appears the Magistrates had requested the Government to station troops

Farming News Louis Murchan N & P STATEMENTS TO 31ST OCTOBER 2020 NOW AVAILABLE The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine has announced that interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period January to October 2020 are now available on the Department’s online system https:// agfood.agriculture.gov.ie/sso-auth-ui-applicant/#/login . This is your result for 75% of the year, so simple maths will give you a very good indication of your expected result for the full year. You will then be informed as to whether you need to submit a Record 3 form to the Nitrates Section, DAFM, in Johnstown Castle, Wexford. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year, in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation the limit is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. WIND FARMS INVESTED ALMOST €3.5 MILLION IN RURAL COMMUNITIES IN 2019 Many of the benefits of Wind Generated electricity may not be environmental. This is a new-ish industry, and not fully established, yet. Some sceptics complain about the noise, but from here all we can hear of the wind-farms in North Kerry and Templeglantine is silence. To some, they are an eyesore, while to others, they are a novelty, but they are productive, regulated and provide employment and clean energy. Now apparently, they do more, they contribute to the local community. They give back. Energy efficiency projects and third level scholarships, sports clubs, active retired groups and local festivals were some of the schemes to benefit from almost €3.5 million in community investment from Irish wind farms in 2019. The figures were released recently in the wind energy community benefit report 2019 from the Irish Wind Energy Association (IWEA). The report identified the top five counties for wind energy community benefit funding, with Co. Galway leading the way with €831,860; followed by Co. Cork on €424,740; Co. Roscommon on €334,600; Co. Tipperary on €258,700; and Co. Limerick on €243,250. Local communities deserve to benefit from the construction and operation of local wind farms. Wind energy continues to be Ireland’s most valuable tool in the fight against climate change. The more clean energy we can generate for our homes, farms, schools and businesses, the less we rely on fossil fuels and the more we can invest in supporting communities. According to the IWEA, wind farms also pay approximately €40 million each year to local councils. Long may it last. BALANCING PAYMENTS UNDER BPS AND GREENING COMMENCE TODAY The Department of Agriculture etc has confirmed that the balancing payments under the 2020 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and Greening began this week, just in time for Christmas. This will have brought farmers up to date with all payments, which will in-turn allow them pay some bills and keep the-showon-the-road for 2021. The start of the BPS balancing payments, announced last Tuesday (December 1) will bring the total paid under the 2020 scheme to €1.13 billion to over 121,000 farmers, the Department of Agriculture said. Payments amounting to 70% (known for some reason as the advance payments) were issued in Mid-October to all farmers who’s paperwork was in order. If your payment is still outstanding, and especially if you received post to this effect form the Department, contact your advisor and get this sorted out as soon as possible. It will not sort itself out. Regular pay runs take place weekly or twice-weekly when possible, so there are three weeks and up to six extra payment-runs yet before Christmas, so don’t delay. Payments under the 2020 National Reserve and the Young Farmers Scheme will also commence alongside BPS payments, while balancing payments under the Areas of Natural Constraints (ANC) scheme are scheduled to commence next week. TIPS AND BEST PRACTICE TO AVOID PNEUMONIA AT HOUSING If the conditions are suitable a pneumonia outbreak can occur in a herd at almost any time of the year. However, it is at housing that most farmers have a problem with it. The most common respiratory diseases in housed cattle are the different forms of pneumonia. Stress is the biggest pre-disposing factor involved. Where stock are stressed their immune system is weakened allowing the infection to take hold. Animals can become very stressed at housing especially if they are mixed with cattle from different groups. The mixing of purchased cattle from different farms or different age groups in itself can lead to respiratory disease problems as the infection spreads to animals that might never have come across the infection and so have little or no immunity towards it.

14 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Animals do not have to be in the same pen to be considered mixed, only the same air space. With large slatted units on many farms now housing many different groups of cattle it can be next to near impossible to avoid this happening. As pneumonia is an air-borne disease it will spread much more easily in confined spaces. Add to this poor ventilation and overcrowding and the problem is further compounded. There must be adequate inlet and outlet ventilation to allow fresh air movements through cattle housing and adequate lying space, otherwise the first night with little or no wind outside could spell disaster. By far the best approach is to avoid a pneumonia outbreak in the first place – this means planning ahead. Management procedures such as castration, weaning and housing all cause a significant amount of stress. However, do not carry out all of these at the same time, but rather to space them out over a number of weeks. When weaning always take a proportion of the cows away from the calves each week until they are all gone. By doing this the calves are left in their familiar surroundings. By feeding meal to the calves the stress of weaning should be kept to a minimum. To successfully avoid pneumonia, at or during housing, follow the following: •

Check ventilation – is it adequate or will you need to improve it?

Check lying space allowances – is there enough or do you need to reduce the numbers in pens;

Watch out for hoose at this time of the year – a severe infection weakens the lungs and makes an animal more susceptible to pneumonia. All cattle should be treated for it shortly after housing;

Try not to house cattle of different age groups close to each other;

• Keep bought in cattle separate to home bred cattle for as long as possible; •

Have young cattle used to eating meals and silage before housing;

Ideally implement a pneumonia vaccination programme well in advance of housing (at least three weeks) to give time for the two shots to be given.

On a final note, one of the best routes to preventing an outbreak of pneumonia is vaccinating. However, most vaccination programmes involve giving a twoshot programme to stock when they are vaccinated for the first time. A small amount of immunity is generated by the first vaccination treatment but this will quickly wane and it is only after the second (booster) vaccination, given three to four weeks after the first (primary) vaccination, that the full degree of long-term immunity is built up to the disease. After this, single booster vaccinations are usually recommended when vaccinating the same animals six to 12 months later, depending on the product used. AVIAN INFLUENZA PREVENTION ZONE TO BE DECLARED IN NORTHERN IRELAND FROM MIDNIGHT Just when we thought it was going to be safe to get back into the water, another flu-type desease appears on the horizon. This isn’t as immediate, not does it have the same effect on human health, but it does need to be watched, and taken seriously. Farmers and the general public are asked to be vigilant, and careful when dealing with poultry of fowl. As we approach the Christmas (or to some, The Festive) season, 100’s of 1,000’s of birds, mainly turkeys will be exchanged for money. Just be careful of their source. As the flu is in Northern Ireland, already, it is only a few hundred miles away. An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) came into effect in Nothern Ireland from December 1. The AIPZ places a legal requirement on all flock-keepers to meet stringent biosecurity measures. This applies to pet birds, commercial flocks as well as those with just a few birds in a backyard or hobby flock. It follows the detection of highly pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N8 (HPAI H5N8) in five wild birds across NI in recent weeks. Additionally cases have been detected in over 100 wild birds across Great Britain with five cases of the H5N8 strain being confirmed in commercial premises in England. There have also been three reported cases in wild birds in the Republic of Ireland, where similar measures are also set to be introduced on December 1. It is clear that the virus is now present here and I have, therefore, taken the decision to declare an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone from December 1 based on sound expert advice and in consultation with industry. This is a necessary precautionary step that requires all bird keepers to take appropriate action to review and enhance the measures to protect their birds from this highly infectious disease. It reduces the risk of contamination from the virus to food and water provided to poultry and other captive birds therefore reducing opportunity for the disease to spread between premises.

This AIPZ is a legal requirement for all birdkeepers to implement mandatory biosecurity measures to help prevent the spread of the disease from wild birds, to poultry and including: •

A ban on bird gatherings;

A requirement that poultry or other captive birds are provided with food and water to which wild birds have no access;

Avoiding transfer of contamination between premises by cleansing and disinfecting equipment, vehicles and footwear;

Separating wild waterfowl (ducks and geese) from domestic species;

Reducing the movement of people, vehicles or equipment to and from areas where poultry or captive birds are kept.

GOVERNMENT INTRODUCES ACCELERATED TAX RELIEF ON FARM SAFETY EQUIPMENT Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe has confirmed last week that he was bringing in a Report Stage Amendment to Finance Bill 2020 in order to introduce “accelerated capital allowances” for farm safety equipment. There will be a particular emphasis on supporting those who have suffered life-changing injuries as a result of incidents on farms. A large proportion of all fatal workplace incidents (50%) occur in the agriculture, fishing and forestry sector. Between 2010 and 2019 there were 214 fatal incidents on farms. Of these, 65 involved a farm vehicle, 39 involved machinery and 39 involved livestock. These three areas accounted for 67% of all fatal incidents on farms. It means that farmers will be able to offset the cost of equipment to modify machinery against their annual tax bill. Currently, capital allowances are available at 12.5% per annum over eight years for agricultural equipment generally. The proposed new scheme will allow for accelerated capital allowances of 50% per annum over two years for certain eligible equipment. This eligible equipment includes, for example, chemical storage cabinets and anti-backing gates, as well as adaptive equipment to assist farmers with disabilities. The scheme will be administered by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Revenue. An annual total equipment cost of €5 million per annum, excluding Value-Added Tax (VAT), for the measure will apply. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938 A5 Advert.pdf 2 12/07/2018 15:17 (B Ag Sc, Dip EIA Mgmt) Agricultural & Environmental Advisor

On-Line Feast Of Story Launches Storied Kerry Web Site To entertain and stimulate in these difficult times, since last March www.storiedkerry.com has published Kerry stories every Tuesday and Thursday. In rotation these came from the eight districts Kerry divides into. In turn they were stories on legend, landscape, plants, animals, archaeology, history, folklore and our contemporary story. “Setting up the Storied Kerry web site was our big step forward this year“ Storied Kerry chairman Frank Lewis explained. “This was to make all of us know more of our Kerry story and in this way enrich and enhance all of our lives, bonding us more closely to our own place, encouraging us to look at the potentials of our place and play out part in developing it, sharpening our awareness of the problems and committing to solving them.”

Now after ten months it is time to officially launch the web site. The 45 minute official launch takes place from the Institue of Technology in Tralee (ITT) and will be live on the web site and on the Storied Kerry facebook page at 4pm on Tuesday December 8. On Saturday December 12 it will be repeated with comments from viewers. The launch will feature a feast of story. Kenmare/Neidin is generally translated as a little nest. As part of the launch Brendan G. O'Sullivan has a very different story – which was published on the web site in July.. Donal Hickey tells that the great yew in Muckross Abbey is built on the grave of a monk who slept for a hundred years. This was first published on the web site in June. From the Killorglin District Owen O'Shea tells of the Kilclohane Portal tomb dating from 4,000 BC which he says, informs his sense of the place and connects him and everybody living in the area with their past and archaeological heritage.

From the Listowel district Joe Murphy tells a folk tale from his life on the farm. Over the past year there was all sorts of other story activity throughout the country. Looking at creating storied. Communities,. Commercial concerns and public bodies, as well as communities, looking at developing story houses. The collecting of nuns' stories, using son et lumiere to tell the Christian story. To give an idea of the activities at the on-line launch Michael O'Coileain tells of some of what went on in his An Daingean/ Dingle District. Stories published on www.storiedkerry.com from the other four Kerry districts will be referred to at the launch. In April Tommy Martin's story told that Castleisland/Oilean Chiarrai is the island of Kerry built on limestone with a network of caves. In September Jessica Hamilton shared her pre-dawn first encounter with a water dog along the canal in Tralee . From the Caherciveen District in June Cait Coffey told a contemporary story of a younger brother's painful experience of the evil's of drink Storied Kerry is a voluntary group of people who have come together to help make all of us more aware of our story. There are endless ways in which this might be done – but it wont happen unless all of us get involved. More information and all of the contact details on www.storiedkerry.com'

Dingle Notes SHOP LOCAL. A major drive across the whole country this year appeals to the public to make every effort to shop local especially as the majority of households spend more money in December than at any other time of the year. Shopping local can be on groceries or gifts or on locally produced items or on local services. Money spent locally really helps the local economy and keeps much needed employment in the Peninsula. Many people in our area have had a tough year either temporarily or permanently losing their jobs so we all can help by thinking local before we start ordering goods online. Vouchers have become very popular over the past few years and are available from almost all local outlets at present. Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine. Late opening will be advertised by

local outlets over the next few weeks. The street lights in Dingle should be all in action by the time you read this edition as should the Christmas Trees at the Mail Road entrance to town.

become founding members by calling Mark McLaughlin at 0870538598. Great to see this popular Festival back on the Dingle Calendar of events and at a very important time of the off season.

MY IRELAND BOX. This Dingle based business which is only a short period in existence got a timely boost with coverage in the RTE 1 main evening news recently. Owned and operated by Catherine Keane and husband Tom they package local and Irish produce into gift boxes which are transported to recipients as gifts or by direct order. One can only imagine the thrill of getting such a box in the post especially for Irish people living away from home particularly at this time of year. Great idea and good luck with the business folks.

OTHER VOICES FESTIVAL. Bringing It All Back Home is the title of the Other Voices Celebrations which this year is a 5 Day Digital Festival which will be streamed live to households from December 2nd to 6th. Details online at othervoices.ie and click on the links to the different days events. Due to covid restrictions events will not have an audience but the crew and participants brought a much needed buzz around town over the past week while recordings were taking place.

NEW DINGLE FILM FESTIVAL. The inaugural festival is due to take place from November 12th to 14th 2021 and film enthusiasts are invited to

ARTS AND CULTURE CENTRE. Over 40 people tuned in to the recent zoom meeting to get an up date on the research undertaken for the proposed Arts and Culture Centre for Corca Dhuibhne. It appears that in Dingle Town alone there are a number of suitable premises either presently unoccupied or infrequently used which could be successfully converted as has happened in many towns around the country. Of course we badly need a multipurpose Community Hall which I have no doubt can be achieved if all the voluntary bodies in the area got together to work on a plan which could cater for the wider sporting and cultural interests in our area. TOURISM. Operators providing accommodation over the Christmas and New Year Period are asked to inform their guests that not all the restaurants and food outlets will be open in this area due to covid restrictions this year. Advance booking in almost all outlets will be highly recommended as it looks like a large number of visitors are still intent on travelling to the Peninsula over the holiday season. The Covid Virus has not gone away so we appeal to everybody to heed the advice of the experts and ensure that 2021 will be a better year for everybody than the one just about to end. SLAN TAMALL!!!.

LAWPRO opened the 2021 fund on Saturday 28 November at the annual seminar of Irish Rivers Trusts and Catchment Groups. Speaking at the event Sheevaun Thompson, Funding lead with LAWPRO said “demand for the Community Water Development Fund has increased year on year since it was first launched in 2018 and it is exciting to announce that the fund has been increased to €360,000 in 2021, up from €225,000 in 2020. This will allow LAWPRO to support even more locally led community projects next year.” A link to a recording of the seminar is available at www.lawaters.ie.

Children of the Shore Growing up in Dingle in the 1950s and 1960s John O’Connor John O’Connor’s description of growing up Dingle, Co Kerry, presents a town quite unlike the thriving tourist mecca it is today. John grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, a time when poverty was rife in an Ireland that the Catholic Church ruled with an iron fist. Hardship was evident in many households in the town where several families in want scraped a livelihood against the backdrop of the uncertainty of the times. The reader can’t but be captivated by the sheer energy and sense of adventure with which O’Connor, his nine siblings and friends faced each day. The harshness of their physical life honed their survival skills and the strong friendships they formed sustained them, as did the outstanding natural beauty of the west Kerry town that O’Connor has always been proud to call ‘home’.

Small Changes: Batteries

A Small Change for Charity An appeal to support children’s charities launched during The Late Late Toy Show last Friday night has so far raised over €6.2 million. The huge amount of money raised is not only a testament to the generosity of Irish people but also an example of how the collective contributions of individuals can yield such remarkable outcomes. It has been an incredibly difficult year for charities, many of which are voluntary, as the need for funding rose while fundraising ability was severely curtailed. In addition, many individuals and businesses are not in the position to support as many charities as they would like or donate as generously as they would have in the past due to the detrimental effects of the pandemic and lockdowns on the economy. However, there are complementary ways to provide some charities with financial support that do not cost a penny and are also environmentally beneficial as an added bonus. One such example is the association of the battery recycling programme* run by WEEE Ireland (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) with the LauraLynn Charity. LauraLynn LauraLynn (formerly known as the Children’s Sunshine home) is Ireland’s only children’s hospice. It provides respite, crisis and end of life care to children with life limiting conditions which can be availed of either in their purpose built hospice in Dublin, in hospital, in the community or in their own homes depending on the location and needs of the child. It also provides invaluable support to the families of these children (www. lauralynn.ie). It costs more than €5million a year to fund their services and €4.6 million of this must be generated through fundraising. WEEE Ireland has donated over €440,000 to LauraLynn in the past nine years from the proceeds of their battery recycling scheme. Batteries and the Environment Apart from raising funds for charity, there are a number of reasons to recycle batteries from an environmental point of view. Due to the potential hazardous nature of batteries, separate waste management legislation was enacted in 2008 specifically to deal with this waste stream. Batteries can contain many hazardous chemicals in addition to heavy metals such as mercury, cadmium and lead which are toxic to plants, animals and humans. As batteries corrode, these materials can leak out of them contributing to soil and water pollution. In addition to reducing the number of items going to landfill, recycling of batteries ensures that hazardous material can be managed in an environmentally responsible manner. Valuable but potentially toxic components such as the heavy metals can be recovered for reuse and this in turn reduces the need to mine for raw materials. While rechargeable batteries also contain hazardous materials and chemicals they are a more sustainable option as they last for several hundred charging cycles (saving you money in the process) and can be recycled at the end of their life span. How & Where to Recycle Batteries? In 2019 47% of all portable batteries placed on the market in Ireland were recovered and recycled. This figure is generally viewed in a positive light as it surpasses the EU battery recovery target of 45%. Another way of viewing these figures however is that over 50% of all the batteries sold last year (the equivalent of 12 AA batteries per person) are either hiding in homes and workplaces across the country or have been discarded incorrectly. Batteries should NEVER be disposed of into household/commercial refuse 42 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

or recycling bins. Dead batteries which have been carelessly discarded are referred to as zombie batteries. When damaged (something that is likely to happen during processing at a waste recycling facility), zombie batteries can ignite or explode. Fires in a waste processing plant can spread very quickly causing thousands of euros worth of damage as well as endangering lives. Lithium ion and nickel metal hydride batteries are the most prone to exploding/igniting when not recycled properly. As these are the types of battery most commonly found in mobile phones, electronic toys, electric toothbrushes etc., the problems caused by zombie batteries are likely to get worse unless the percentage of batteries correctly recovered and recycled does not improve. The 2008 legislation made it very simple for consumers to dispose of batteries responsibly for recycling. All retailers selling equivalent types of batteries to those you wish to recycle are obliged to accept them e.g. shops, supermarkets and electrical stores will accept portable batteries (AA batteries, button batteries from cameras and watches and large torch batteries); agricultural stores will accept electric fence batteries; garages will accept ignition starter batteries from cars. You do not need to buy new batteries from retailers to return waste batteries as you would for large WEEE appliances such as fridges and washing machines. Schoolchildren will usually be delighted to take old batteries (both chargeable and non-rechargeable) off your hands as most schools have signed up to the WEEE pledge and prizes are awarded to the schools that collect the most batteries. Portable batteries can also be dropped off at the nearest local authority recycling centre or brought to WEEE Ireland recycling collection points. Returning to the Toy Show, when Gay Byrne hosted it he was always sure to remind parents to buy batteries (ideally rechargeable!) for the gifts Santa might bring so as to avoid disappointed children on Christmas morning. This year try to make an extra effort to remember to recycle your old batteries for the very ill children who need the services that LauraLynn provide. *The European Recycling Platform (ERP) Ireland also recycle batteries and the proceeds of their initiative go to Barretstown Children’s Charity (www.barretstown.org)

The 22nd March 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the Lispole Ambush. Preparations are now under way by Coiste Pobail/Féile Lios Póil to commemorate this historic event. A booklet will be published giving a detailed account of the events on the days prior, during and after the Ambush. We will also refurbish the monument. If anyone has photos of their relatives who were involved in the Lispole Ambush or stories about the ambush, we would love to have them included in the booklet, these may be dropped in to Kate’s Cross or Keane’s Shop or given to Risteard Mac Eoin (0871738948) or any member of the Coiste before the 17th December.

Deirdre de Bhailís A move to Level 3 restrictions on Tuesday 1st December means that the Dingle Hub is now reopened to our regular clients. People are being asked to "work from home unless absolutely necessary to attend in person". We are asking all of our community to respect these restrictions and limit use of services to times that are absolutely necessary and use a home alternative where possible. Meeting rooms can only be made available to those who are providing essential services and we are currently unable to facilitate hot desk bookings for the duration of these restrictions. The team is still fully available remotely and eager to help make connections and identify opportunities for all of our community so please do continue to connect with us. It is an understatement to say it’s been a difficult year for all businesses and Government supports have been critical to enable us all to respond to the pandemic and the resulting impacts

of reduced income and increased operational costs. We were delighted and much relieved recently with the announcement of funding for the Dingle Hub through the Enterprise Ireland Enterprise Centre Scheme. This scheme will enable us to continue working with you all to support enterprise and contribute to economic recovery on the Peninsula and to continue to prepare us for the challenges and opportunities emerging from the transition to a low carbon economy. We look forward to what will hopefully be a much different year in 2021.

opportunities with you and build a team from here? We want to hear from you!! Please connect with us at info@dinglehub.com and help us build a vibrant, diverse and dynamic community and network. It’s not necessary to need a physical desk or office space in the hub to be part of this wider community. We’d also love you to connect with us on social media platforms Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook.

Congratulations to Dingle Lit Festival who put on a fantastic festival recently 20-22 November. We were delighted to host this virtual festival, which attracted huge numbers and was an outstanding model of how to run an online event. Thanks for reinvigorating us with the creative energy and inspiration. Looking forward to next year’s festival already.

Dingle Parish

Please Note: If you wish to attend Mass on Sundays please contact the parish office at the above times.

Note from Fr Michael (Dingle PP)

Christmas2020. It will not be possible for all those who would like to attend Mass on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to do so. We realise that many people see it as important to connect with their faith in a Church setting especially at Christmas. We are considering having two Masses, in St Marys Church Dingle, each evening from Monday 21st onwards. Details of Christmas Mass Schedule will be on the parish website and in the newsletter as soon as they are available. While it will not be the same as every other year we appeal to your understanding and patience.

As we journey through Advent we are encouraged to prepare ourselves for the joyful feast of Christmas. Mass Schedule 2021: Changes to the Mass schedule in all 4 Parishes of the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral area are being discussed at this time. Seven of the eleven Churches will have Mass once every two weeks and some will not have a Sunday morning Mass. The new Mass schedule will take effect in January 2021. I encourage you to attend Mass on a weekly basis (when restrictions are lifted) even if Mass is further from your local Church. Parish Masses: It is great to have a congregation again. There are a few obvious changes in seating and reduced numbers in attendance but the primary aspect of the Church as a place of prayer remains. Anybody who wishes to attend weekdays Masses are welcome to do so. No booking required. Just arrive and sit in an allocated space. The following applies for the weekend Masses. You are asked to phone the office at 066-9151208 to let us know what Mass you would like to attend. By booking you are helping us to plan for how many may be in attendance. Please phone at the following times only: 2.00pm – 4.00pm Wednesday, Thursday and Friday giving your name and number of persons (if more than 1). When you get to the Church you are asked to use the Hand Sanitizers provided and follow instructions from the stewards. We will celebrate Mass in St Mary’s Church, Dingle only, at this time. Your co-operation is very much appreciated. The following will apply in line with Diocesan guidelines: • Communion can only be received in the hand at this time. • You are asked to wear a face mask. • Please sit in the designated spaces only. • No kneeling, just to sit and stand only. • Please place your offering for the offertory collection in the building fund boxes at the back of the churches as passing of baskets is not permitted.

Venison Pie Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School

Add the leeks and carrots, cook for another few minutes. Add the tomato puree stir this in and cook for a minute or so. Return the meat to the pot and pour in the wine, reduce this by half and add the stock. Season with salt and pepper. Place a lid on the casserole and place in the oven for about 2-2½ hours. While the venison is cooking you can make the pastry. Mix the egg and water. Mix the flour and salt in a bowl, rub in the butter until it comes to the consistency of breadcrumbs. Add in the egg mixture. Bring all this together until if forms a dough. Wrap this in cling film and allow this to rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes.

This pie is delicious. Sometimes venison has a reputation for being too gamey or too tough, but if you ask your butcher. They will be able to get some well-hung venison which will have plenty of flavour and should not be tough. I have used the leg here and have cooked it very slow in a stew with flavours that work well with venison. There is a little work in this but it is worth taking your time to make the pastry and then allowing the pastry to rest. You will be rewarded with a rich stew and a crispy pastry. If you don’t fancy venison you could substitute the meat with beef. Hope you enjoy this. This will serve 6 Ingredients 600g venison, diced (I used meat from the leg)

Remove from the fridge and once it comes to room temperature, use a rolling pin to roll it out to about 1 cm. Roll it out to be larger than the casserole pie. Brush this with the egg wash (if you can palce this on a tray and place it in the fridge, if not leave it somewhere cool in the kitchen). After a while egg wash it again. Once the stew is ready, remove it from the fridge and adjust the seasoning. Allow this to cool before covering with the pastry. Carefully place the pastry over the casserole pot with the pastry, neatly roll up the edges of the overhanging pastry over the pot. Use a small knife to create a small pattern on the edges of the pastry. Decorate the top of the pastry as you wish. Pierce the centre of the pastry. Brush with the remaining egg wash. Place this in the oven and bake for 30 minutes. Bain Taitneamh As!!

Heat a large casserole pot over a medium to high heat. Once hot add a little oil then add the venison. Allow this to brown for a few minutes (you may need to do this in batches). Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Mo mhachnamh ar 2020 Fán fada ort a 2020, ní bheimid uaigneach id’ dhiaidh. A leithéid de bhliain fhada ghránna níor tháinig le cuimhne na ndaoine agus imeacht gan teacht air! Pé scéal é tá foclóir nua foghlamtha againn go léir tar éis na bliana…..an víreas coróineach, paindéim, díghalrán láimhe, dianghlasáil, scaradh sóisialta, clutharú, Zoom agus pusacháin. Anois nuair a bhíos-sa óg is ar na gamhna óga a bhíodh na pusacháin ach na laethanta seo is ar dhaoine atáid agus iad ag iarraidh iad féin agus gach éinne eile a chosaint ar an aicíd. Tá ár dtír bheag loitithe ag an gCovid seo agus tá an domhan mór is baolach in umar na haimiléise. Tá fuascailt ag teastáil go tapaidh. Cuimhním ar chailliúint agus ar uaigneas nuair a chuimhním ar 2020. Cailleadh m’athair féin, trócaire air, san Aibreán agus chun cloí leis na rialacha ní raibh aon tórramh ann agus chaitheamar an tsochraid b’uaigní, b’aonaránaí agus ba mhínadúrtha d’Éireannach agus do Ghael a bheith againn. Ní raibh aon dul as, is mar sin a chaith sé a bheith agus tá a rian san orainn go léir go fóill. Agus ós ag trácht ar uaigneas atáim n’fhaca mo gharchlann ach aon bhabhta amháin fós i mbliana. Is mór an chailliúint domsa é seo agus braithim uaim go mór iad. Tá siad ag fás suas i ngan fhios dom. Ta an teicneolaíocht go diail ach ní mar a chéile é. Áirím scanradh agus sceimhle leis an mbliain 2020. Bhí ailse orm féin i mbliana agus ní dhearúdfad go deo an sceimhle agus an preab a baineadh asam, agus mé san ospidéal i gCorcaigh, nuair a chonac fógra ar an ardaitheoir a dúirt “Covid Amháin.” Ní mór ná gur thit an t-anam asam mar is ag dul síos im’ aonar chun m’obráid a bheith agam a bhíos maidin Aoine an Chéasta , nuair a chonac an bhagairt dhiamhair seo os mo chomhair amach. Mhaireamar trí eadóchas ceart agus easpa misnigh i mbliana agus mo thrua go dealbh iad seo go léir a chónaíonn ina n-aonar. B’ait an rud gach éinne a fheiscint ag fanacht siar óna chéile. Ní hé sin an nádúr atá ionainn. Gan dabht is dócha nár chabhraigh sé go raibh an saol mór gach aon tráthnóna ag fanacht ar uimhreacha. Níor chuir aon chúntasóir riamh an oiread san suime in uimhreacha is a chuir muintir na hÉireann le bliain anuas! Nuair a bhíodh na huimhreacha ard, agus is minic a bhíodar, thiteadh an lug ar an lag ag gach éinne agus bhímís ar fad bailithe. Ansan ,fé mar a bheadh an nimh ar an aithne d’imigh Fungie uainn.An amhlaidh a bhraith an deilf bhocht go raibh an saol ar fad imithe dhó féin nó an raibh a phort seinnte ? Ní fios. “Is a dheilf mhór chliste chineálta, a chónaigh sa Daingean sa chuan. Táimd uaigneach id’ éagmais, ó bhailís leat i 2020 uainn, Lean ort ag imirt sa taoide, ‘sé do stáitse é ‘s do bhaile go buan, ‘s gura fada a mhairfir inár gcuimhne, a Fungie go Lá an Luain.” 48 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Annascaul Notes Santa is on his way to Annascaul We know it has been a strange year, but there is some good news Santa from the cottage market, Annascaul has teamed up with Annascaul An Post to make sure that local Annascaul children have that special Christmas as usual. From the 1st December there will be a special Santa post box located inside Annascaul Post Office. Please make sure that you put your address and phone number on the back of the envelope. As An Post will send each child back a letter from Santa. Also one of Santa's elves will contact you to arrange a free doorstep visit from Santa himself before Christmas day. Bus service Fantastic news for everyone using public transport in Annascaul. The number of daily buses is increasing from five to nine in each direction from Dingle to Tralee with better connections. Annascaul family attempt to break five world records for charity Four members of the Hickson family, from Annascaul, Co Kerry, will take part in the world record attempts for the Goal Mile, an annual fundraiser where groups walk or run a mile for the charity. The Hickson family has to date set 15 Guinness world records, and in the coming weeks will attempt to break five more. Eamon Hickson (33), a presenter and producer with Radio Kerry, will try to beat the current record – of 23 minutes and 45 seconds – for the fastest time to crawl one mile. Quickest mile. In 2014 he set the world record for the longest journey reversing a tractor and trailer, driving 17.3km from Dingle to Annascaul. Jason Hickson (28), a farmer, will attempt to break the current record of six minutes and one second for the quickest mile dribbling a basketball. Sandra Hickson (40), a psychiatric nurse in Cork, will attempt to beat the record for the fastest mile while carrying a 40lb pack, which is currently nine minutes. Her partner, Nathan Missin (34) a commercial pilot, is aiming to run a mile while carrying a 60lb pack in under eight minutes. He is also attempting to break a second world record for the fastest mile carrying a 100lb pack, which is currently nine minutes and 25 seconds.The family will try the five record attempts over a number of days in the middle of December. Last year Goal assisted more than six million people across 13 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America.

‘Beagnach céad bliain ó céadfhoilsíodh Jimín Mháire Thaidhg, tugann an t-eagrán maisithe seo léargas úr ar an leabhar is aitheanta i gcorpas litríocht Ghaeilge na n-óg. Leagan glanta agus giorraithe de Jimín Mháire Thaidhg a léigh glúine de pháistí scoile Éireannacha, ar baineadh tagairtí don chleamhnas, do chaidrimh idir dhaoine fásta agus don bhás amach as. Filleann an t-eagrán seo ar an mbuntéacs agus tugann sé cuntas níos grinne agus níos greannmhaire ar nósanna agus ar chultúr na Gaeltachta ag tús an fichiú haois.’. - An tSnáthaid Mhó An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt

An Domhnach seo chugainn beidh sciolladh sna na cheithre hárda idir Thiobrad Árainn agus Bleá Cliath agus an Chabhán agus Maigh Eó. Ní maith liom é a bheith á thuar go mbeidh craobh caide na hÉireann ag Bleá Cliath i mbliana. An dtarlóidh miorúilt? Ní doigh liom é. Níl aon treascairt i mdán dóibh fós. Tá súil agam go bhfuilim mí-cheart!

Táimíd ag sleamhnú linn isteach i Mí na Nollag. Gan dabht bíonn Nollaig ó Shamhain go Bealtaine ag daoine eile. Is baolach go bhfuil daoine an- chancarach, iad siúd go raibh-bhfuil gnó acu agus ná feadair siad an bhfuil a bpost nó obair a bhí acu, imithe ina ghal suip, nó idir dhá cheann na meá. Tá mílte clipithe ag an Víoras ach an chuma atá ar an scéal go mbeidh vaícsín ar fáil a bhainfidh na cosa uaidh sara fada. Tá ar a laghad cheithre vaicsín ar na bióráin ach tá an baol ann fós go maróidh sé daoine leice sara bhfaighidh siad vaicsín. Tá an rialtas tréis a chur un úil go bhfuil vaicsín ordaithe acu. Dea scéala.

An gaisce eile ná an mbeadh an bhua ag iománaithe seiftithe Luimní. Níl aon amhras ach go mbeidh an- chlibirt idir Luimneach agus Pórt Láirge ach cé déarfainn ?

Ó Mháirt na seachtaine seo tá faoiseamh na Nollag againn. Beidh caoi ag scata cúpla euro a dhéanamh agus bogadh a bheith acu. Má bhíonn tú amuigh ag siopadóireacht, mholfainn an oiread agus is féidir a cheannach ó na siopaí agus na ceardaithe áitiúla, atá go líonmhar sa dúthaigh seo againn, agus a gcuid earraí le fáil i mbéal an dorais againn, i leithéidí Siopa an Bhuailtín agus Oifig an Phoist Cheann Trá, sa Chaifé Liteartha atá 40 bliain ar an bhfód, nó díreach ó na ceardaithe féin.

Pat Kearney

Calaphor . Tá calafort geallta do Éirinn ag an Ollóin le lastas a chur i dtír do mhargaí na hEorpa. Tá Príomh-Aire Shasana ag iarraidh a rogha rud a dhéanamh, conradh trádala agus cosaint ar a dteoraintí iascaigh. Níl siad nó tá siad san AE? Nílíd ach tá siad ag iarraidh an craiceann agus a luach a bheith acu. Go dtí seo is ag brú aon ghealúint a dheineadar linne á chaitheamh i dtraipisí acu. Mhol Joe Biden don bPríomh-Aire claoi le Comhaontas Aoine an Chéasta. Rud nách bhfuil déanta aige. Tá praiseach ceart déanta i gcás ceansú an víorais sa Bhreatain. An bhfuil toghchán ar na bioráin? Bás. Mar a bhíonn go minic bíonn daoine gaolmhar, cáirde agus ball do chlann ag titim leis an mbás an t-am seo bliana. Fuacht agus nimh san air. Fuair Seán Ó Brosnacháin ó Leataoibh Beag bás i dtig banaltrais Mhac Lochlainn Baile Luáin ar an 27ú lá do Shamhain. Maireann gaolta. Suaimhneas siorraí aige. Ní dhein sé dearmad ar an bhfód dúchais, mar is i Reilig Bhaile Uí Bhoithín a adhlacadh corp Sheáin ar an Luan seo caite. Solas síorraí ag a anam. Tailte Méith Sna luath-chaogadaí aistríodh feirmeoirí ós na Gaeltachtaí go dtí Ráth Cairn na Mí, agus Gaeltacht Bhleá Cliath i dTuaisceart an chontae agus Ceanntar Dhún Luáin i gChill Manntáin mar a lonaigh muintir Brosnacháin Bheadh talamh níos torthúla sna gabhaltaisi a fuaireadar ná mar a bhí thiar ach gearradh amach ó chairde agus gaolta iad. Iománaíocht. Chuir cluichí iomána leath-cheannais na hÉireann ardú croí orainn ar fad. Mheas furmhór an phobail go mbeadh an lá le Gaillimh in aghaidh Luimní. Thosnaigh Gaillimh go maith ach sa dara leath bhain Luimneach an bonn uatha le diamhaireacht, dúracht agus fuinneamh do-chreite. Bhí caighdeán na himeartha ar fheabhas ar fad. B’é an scéal céanna a bhí ag Port Láirge in aghaidh Chill Chainnigh. Tá Cill Chainnigh chomh ceannasach is a bhíodar riamh ach bhuaidh Port Láirge lonnmhar aiclí ortha. Ní raibh aon teora leis an gcrua-fhuinneamh a bhí sna buachaillí Déiseacha. Dhá fhoireann ón Mumhain sa chraobh chluiche. Chuir Meiriceánach cheist orm, ‘Who will win the All-Ireland football title? I would like to place a bet’. ‘Place a hundred each way on Dublin.’ a dúirt leis. Thóg sé tamall air a thuiscint gur magadh é. ‘Too damn smart’ ar sé.

Sólas agus Ceol Beidh cuid do cheolta a bhailigh an Ministir/ Canonach Eaglasta James Goodman a chaith seal maith i mBaile Móir [ baile mín trant ] agus i mBeann Traí le clos óna cúig dtí leath tréis a sé ar Radio na Gaeltachta, Lá Nollag. Taifead é seo ó ócáid le linn Scoil Cheoil an Earraigh a dúirt Niamh ní Bhaoill.
