Dingle Notes Richie Williams WELCOME. A big Céad Míle Fáilte to the Sacred Heart University students who are due to touch down in West Kerry this weekend and spend their spring semester with us before returning home in early May. Their studies will be mainly concentrated in An Diseart and in the SHU Mall Premises with input from Munster Technological University in Tralee and locally based tutors. The majority of the visitors are involved in Nursing Courses with Media Studies, Coastal Ecology and Anthropology also included in their itinerary. We wish you all a pleasant, healthy and safe stay here in Corca Dhuibhne over the next few months. 2030 PROJECT. The Dingle Peninsula 2030 Project featured prominently in a recent RTE Change Makers Programme. Well done to all concerned as the content really highlighted the huge ongoing efforts involved in the project which will hopefully ensure a better future for everybody in the Peninsula and beyond. This is only one of the many successful projects launched since the Dingle Hub was set up in Cooleen a few short years ago. BUSINESS. The Business Chamber wish to express their gratitude to all who supported the Shop Local initiative especially over the Christmas and New Year period. Some outlets are closed at present due to Covid related staff shortages and for their annual leave after a tough two years for both employers and employees. However if it is for general shopping or food related visits all are welcome to our town and the usual personal service is assured with Gnó Trí Gaeilge available in every outlet. Hopefully our leaders will be able to announce easing of the damaging opening hours restrictions which hit our hospitality sectors very badly for the past 2 years.

SYMPATHY VIGILS. Over 200 people attended the Vigil at Dingle Pier on Friday evening to show solidarity with the family of Aishling Murphy who lost her life in such tragic circumstances near Tullamore last week. Many more attended the vigils at various centres around the Peninsula over the weekend. This unnecessary loss of life comes at a time when discussions are taking place to extend the See Something, Hear Something, Say Something, Do Something Scheme in Kerry to areas like the Dingle Peninsula. This idea has proven very successful in reporting suspicious activities and reducing crimes in other Kerry towns. I know you will say that I am repeating myself but Yes We Can All Play Our Part in different ways.

The Tidy Towns Committee are getting their work schedule together for the coming year and welcome any suggestions from the public on ways to further improve our town. We hope to concentrate on the side streets, off centre streets or connecting streets as these are all important for locals and visitors alike. Suggestions already received include more regular painting or maintenance of premises and murals on vacant walls. Contact either Julie Lynch, Patrick Sheehy, Gene Courtney, Marian Coffey or Risteard Mac Liam with your suggestions however random or off the wall they may be. AN PLEAN TEANGA. A Heads-Up If You Are Taking A Magnesium Supplement

absorbed this way is not yet fully understood. We do know that the body requires at least 300-400mg daily, which can be derived from diet. However, soil quality, depletions and our ability to absorb Magnesium must be taken into account when deciding whether to supplement or not.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra

More recently, magnesium has been paired with specific amino acids which determine its action. Glycine is a calming neurotransmitter and when bound to Magnesium (Magnesium Glycinate) enhances Magnesium’s natural relaxation properties and to settle the nervous system. Taurine, known to support cardiac muscle and enhance the quality of contractions. Cardiac cells have the highest concentration of taurine receptors and when bound to Magnesium (Magnesium Taurate) allow the magnesium to flood into the cell. Magnesium helps the heart muscle to relax and open the flow of blood into the heart itself. Likewise, when bound to malic acid (Magnesium Malate), magnesium can act on other muscles in the body, helping them to relax and ease cramps and stiffness. Magnesium contributes to flexibility, preventing injury by loosening tight muscles and reducing the build up of lactic acid post-exercise.

“Ah, sure, just take some magnesium and you’ll be grand” has become common advice for multiple health problems in recent years. Yet without the proper guidance on what type or dosage, magnesium like any other supplement, may not be right for you. That said, magnesium is referred to as “Nature’s Tranquilizer” and may indeed be warranted to combat the effects of stress and our chaotic lives, which are factors in most modern-day illnesses across all age groups. You would naturally think that Magnesium is straight-forward, being a well-researched mineral and used for centuries for all kinds of ailments. However, Magnesium cannot exist by itself and must be bound to something else. It is this pairing that determines the action of the Magnesium so it is important to know why you are actually taking it in the first place. You certainly don’t want to take the laxative magnesium if you are trying to quieten your restless legs! Long before Magnesium caught on in the medical field, it first was discovered in a cattle field in the English town of Epsom, or so the story goes. During a drought in the Summer of 1618, local farmer, Henry Wicker, came across a pool of water from which his thirsty cattle refused to drink. The water tasted bitter and on evaporation yielded a grey-white salt which had an extraordinary effect – a laxative, better known as Epsom Salts (magnesiumsulfate), a treatment for constipation for the following 350 years! While Henry was happy that his bowel problems had eased, he also noticed that the wounds on the animals who waded in the bitter-tasting (or, Epsom-salted) water also seemed to heal more quickly. Soon after, news travelled fast and Epsom became a “spa town” with people travelling from all over to drink and bathe in the Epsom waters. Today Epsom salts are still used for soaking tired, sore muscles and for relaxation baths, in humans and animals, but thankfully there are now better magnesium-based formulas for internal use. Roll on to 1893, when an English chemist, Charles Henry Philips, patented a new combination, Magnesium Hydroxide, a white milky formula better known as “Milk of Magnesia”. The blue-coloured bottle soon became the go-to for constipation and as an antacid right across Europe and the US. With improved drugs for these conditions and more research into their root causes, this type of Magnesium is less commonly used nowadays. Magnesium Oxide (bound to an oxygen molecule) is the least absorbed form of Magnesium, meaning much of it stays in the bowel and attracts water, making the stool softer – good for constipation in the short term though can easily lead to loose, watery stools (obviously). Newer compounds such as Magnesium Citrate (bound to citric acid) is easier titrated for laxative purposes and better tolerated than Magnesium Oxide. It is now known that Magnesium plays a critical role in about 600 functions in the body - from muscle contraction and relaxation to DNA and RNA production, nerve function, blood flow, energy production, and blood glucose control. Clinically, it is used for muscle cramps, restless legs, high blood pressure, constipation, and calming the nervous system. Insulin resistance in diabetes has a direct relationship to low magnesium levels. Inflammation, stress, leaky gut, diarrhoea, exercise and sweating can deplete levels while intestinal problems and low vitamin D levels can impair absorption. Magnesium is central to the chlorophyll complex in plants, so green leafy vegetables are a rich source, as are other green vegetables, avocado and pumpkin seeds. Magnesium also absorbs well through the skin – in the example of Epsom Salts (as Magnesium sulfate) or in gels/ lotions, usually as Magnesium Chloride, though the quantity or milligrams

Magnesium L-Threonate is the latest in a long line of Magnesium formulas but it is certainly gaining a lot of attention. This form effectively crosses the blood brain barrier and has recently been studied for Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, ADD, ADHD, and brain injury recovery. It is hoped that this formula will be a welcome relief for sleep problems, migraines, brain fog and poor memory. Though not widely available yet, this one is sure to be in big demand when it arrives on our shelves. You may be more confused about Magnesium after all of this, but hopefully you get the idea that whatever substance(s) magnesium is bound to is the key to choosing the right formula for you. Magnesium Citrate remains the most bio-available formula out there and a good all-rounder when in doubt, as are formulas with multiple bondings. Do consider quality over quantity, choosing only reputable, well-researched brands and always seek professional advice if taking medication or treating specific health conditions. Flóra na Samhlaíochta Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Baineadh geit asam ag siúl na mbánta lem ghadar órga Oscar le clapsholas seachtain ó shin, ag bíogadh as leanntán féir chugam – caisearbhán glébhuí – cé chreidfeadh é, i tús Eanáir! BLÁTH – an focal is fearr liom im urlabhra, agus an chéad fhocal ceart óm bhéal im leanbh dhá bhliain go leith dom, dar lem Mham. A bhuíochas di siúd, grásta uirthi, a bheartaigh Gaelainn a labhairt lena céadghin, gur shíneas mo mhéar i dtreo an phlanda geiréiniam a bhí fé bhláth sa phóirse gréine laistigh de dhoras tosaigh ár dtighne i bPáirc an Teampaill, agus ‘bláth’ ar bharr mo theangain agam.

áilleacht – n’fheadar conas mar mheas sí fén gcaisearbhán agus an neantóg agus an garbhlus?! Ach, an rud a dh’fhoghlamaíos is dócha, agus rud a chuir iontas an domhain orm, go bhfuil an dá thaobh i na h-aon phlanda agus na buachalláin buí a luabhair ó chianaibh is gnáthóg do bholb leamhain áirithe é, agus tagann na mílte cuileanna agus meacha fiú go dtí mbuachallán buí. Scéal tré scéal a leanas – lá dá raibh mo dheartháir Liam (feirmeoir na clainne i bPáirc an Teampaill) ag baint sliotharnaí i nGort na Ceartan i dtús an tsamhraidh anuaraidh go mbuail mar a bheadh poc sí sa tsúil é. Go gairid ina dhiaidh sin do tholg sé An Rua, a d’fhág samhradh anadhúshlánach roimhe ag broic leis an ngalar, le síorthinneas droma agus scraith tochasach ar a chraiceann. ’Sé Liam an té is téagarthaí agus is folláine, b’fhéidir, den seisear dearthár againn ónár n-óige, ach geallaim duit, a léitheoir, nach raibh aon teaspach ar an bhfear maith ar feadh ráithe de bharr a thinnis, a d’fhág go raibh an-fháilte aige roimh aon chúnamh feirme a thiocfadh ina threo lena linn. Ar liosta na gcúraimí feirme a bhí le déanamh, bhí stathadh na mBuachallán Buí roimh ghearradh an tsadhlais. Tar éis dá chlann mhac Proinnsias is Máirtín mórchuid a scuabadh chun siúl don gcéad ghearradh, bhí roinnt mhaith fós a fás i bpáirceanna an tsadhlais don tarna gearradh le linn dom fhéin is dom dheartháir Mícheál teacht ar an bport chuige i dtús Lúnasa. Sheol Liam Mícheál go dtísna páirceanna cois Teampall Liath, agus mé féin go páirceanna cois seaniarnróid an Daingin ar chúl Thúirín Gréine. Bhí go maith is ní raibh go h-olc. Thugas cúpla uair a chloig ag stoitheadh ar mo shuaimhneas, is d’fhágas i mbeartanna cois claí – bailíonn buachallán beart!

Spring Semester Sacred Heart, Dingle

Sacred Heart University (SHU) students have been coming to Dingle since 2002 and with each year the popularity of our Study Aboard programs continues to grow. In 2019, nearly 500 SHU students visited Dingle. Unfortunately, due to Covid, Study Abroad in Dingle was placed on hiatus back in March 2020 – until now. SHU in Dingle is delighted to announce the arrival of 55 students for the Spring semester in January 2022, which will run until May. The students are fully vaccinated, will be tested throughout their time in Dingle, and will adhere to the HSE Covid guidelines.

We are delighted to see the return of the students to Dingle this month which reignites the growth of our Study Abroad programs. And fundamental to our ethos, we look forward to growing new and existing links with the local community and businesses here in Dingle.

at SHU in Dingle wish to extend a massive thank you to the town for welcoming our students. We look forward to more adventures with you in 2022 and onwards!

Our students love this lively town, the beautiful scenery, and the numerous activities available to them on their doorstep; but most of all, they love the friendliness and sense of community that Dingle offers. The team here

The Spring semester students are studying degrees in a variety of subjects including Nursing, Biology, Arts, and Education. As part of the SHU curriculum, students get to experience courses outside of their core studies. SHU in Dingle students have the opportunity to take courses based on topics such as Oceanography, Anthropology, Coastal Ecology, and Film Studies. Their studies are based in An Diseart and in the Mall Campus In looking forward to the future and to the continued growth of our programs, we in SHU in Dingle have recently expanded our core team. In December we hired Dr Ciara Barrett as Student Coordinator. Ciara, who has taught Irish Cinema with Sacred Heart for several years, hails originally from Boston and has made her home in Dunquin since 2018. Dr Grace Flannery, a Dingle native who has worked as a lecturer and academic coordinator with SHU in Dingle since 2015, has taken up the position of Program Co-Director alongside Dr John Roney of Sacred Heart University.

John was an ordinary, unassuming man, yet extraordinary in the way he made so many friends, touching the lives of so many people in his short life. The Fair was indeed a fitting tribute to the memory of John and the esteem in which he was held. Rest In Peace. Congratulations Cathy and the Castlemaine Events Committee. Well done all for your endeavours, this fundraiser will no doubt make a difference. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Congratulations to Dr. Séan Murphy on celebrating his 90th. birthday. Séan, an outstanding Kerry footballer, his record is truly phenomenal. Playing with his native Camp, Séan won 3 district board medals in 1949, 1950 and 1951. In 1949 he won a Junior Medal with Kerry and 3 senior All Ireland in 1953, 1955 and 1959. He received a Texaco Award in 1959. His display in the 1959 All Ireland against Galway is rated amongst the greatest ever. The late Eugie Deane in his book, The History of Camp Football, says that All Ireland is known in some places as Sean Murphys All Ireland. Séan was selected for The GAA Team of The Century. And in 2000 Séan was selected for the GAA Millenium

Séan's parents, the late Jackie and Hannah taught in Camp School and it was in the School field that Seans love of football began, kicking around with his School colleagues. In 2019 Sean attended a function in Camp Sports field when Camp Community Council awarded him with an honorary distinction in a night to recognise our Camp football legends. Dr. Sean operated a very successful medical practice in Oakpark Tralee for almost 50 years where he was highly regarded and respected. Séan, thanks for the wonderful memories and may you enjoy many more years of good health and happiness with your wife Margaret and all the extended Murphy family agus go maire tú an chéad. A GOOD NEWS STORY A good news story of the fate of a century old Sléan and how it ended up in California. Pat Briggs from California on his last visit to Camp went home with a lovely souvenir. A sléan, an old turf cutting implement, well used in the harvesting of turf in Maumcúlach long ago, now holds pride of place by the fireside in Pat's house in Alameda, Oaklands, California. Restored and painted up and polished it looks great and the basket of fine dry Maum turf near it looks good too. And the Slieve East farmer who parted with his old Sléan will be pleased to hear this news.

CAMP JUNIORS FC U-13 Girls Premier Fenit 1 Camp 3 Camp travelled to Fenit Saturday on a perfect morning to take on Samphires . Fenit began strongly and our defence of Erin, Lily, Sharon and Aoibhinn had to be alert and get some decent tackles in early as Fenit's pace caused us problems. In the 10th minute, Fenit forced a great save from Captain Beatrice, one of four in the half as she dealt strongly with any danger. Camp midfield were now coming into the game and a strong run by winger Keelin Clifford saw her cross converted by the goal machine that is Caoimhe Skinner.

Camp's ability to rotate players helped keep energy levels high as Alanna, Leah, Roisin and Keelin Sinnott took control of midfield. These four girls really worked hard, as we had to defend a number of corners from Fenit. Our 3 at the back: Niamh, Lily & Sharon kept Fenit strikers under wraps as Erin, Ais and Keelin probed chances for the pacy Aoibhinn now relocated up front and Caoimhe. At the mid point of the second half, Keelin Clifford with a lovely bit of skill slipped away and finished well to put Camp in the driving seat at 1-3. Still plenty to do but Aisleigh, Erin, Alanna, Leah and Roisìn emptied the tanks to close out the win against a good Fenit side. Fenit 1 Camp 3 Thanks to the Fenit girls and their manager John Quilter for a fair & sporting game. Team: Beatrice Dowling - Captain, Erin O Shea, Sharon Enright, Lily Herlihy, Aoibhinn O Callaghan, Keelin Clifford, Alanna Griffin, Roisìn Evans, Leah Courtney, Niamh O Callaghan, Aisleigh Horan, Keelin Sinnott, Caoimhe Skinner. Camp MVP's as chosen by Ref John Ross : Leah Courtney and Niamh O Callaghan.

Fenit's pressure paid off and they finally beat Beatrice to leave it all to play for in the second half.

A quick first time ball from Erin sent Keelin Clifford galloping down the wing who again whipped it across for Caoimhe to trap it and send high to the net for a fine team goal.

Proceeds of Castlemaine Fair Day Presented to Kerry Hospice Foundation

“John would be beaming with pride and will be forever proud” Cathy concluded. Jack Shanahan, chairman of Kerry Hospice fundraising stated that: "It is great to think that profound human kindness still is alive and well in Castlemaine. Last Saturday evening we assembled in Griffin's to accept a donation of deep generosity, over €40,000, to Kerry Hospice and Palliative care services. The running of a fair day, produced almost totally outdoors, was a perfect example of a community taking a positive action. It was a genuinely good event that reflected the high esteem that the late John O'Donoghue and his family are held. On behalf of Kerry Hospice Foundation, we were delighted to explain that all funds raised in Kerry, stay in Kerry. All money raised is spent directly on palliative care and infrastructure, like our inpatient and outpatient units, as well as community services. Currently we are recruiting two advanced nurse practitioners to add to the team. Kerry Hospice Foundation will continue to support the provision of professionally led palliative care services, thanks to the generosity of the people of Kerry."

STAFF WANTED The revival of Castlemaine Fair Day was held on Sunday, October 10th 2021 in memory of the late John O’Donoghue, The Village, Castlemaine. It was a resounding success and a fitting tribute to a pillar of the community who sadly passed away on January 13th 2021 in the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry. On Saturday evening January 15th in Griffin’s Bar and Lounge, Castlemaine, the proceeds of the Fair Day which amounted to an incredible sum of €40,061.76 were presented by family members, close friends and the Castlemaine Events Committee to the very deserving Kerry Hospice Foundation who provided exemplary care and support to John and his family following a shock diagnosis of terminal bowel cancer in May 2019. John O’Donoghue was born on January 21st 1965 which happened to coincide with a staging of Castlemaine Fair Day over fifty years ago and it was with this in mind that Cathy, John’s daughter and his good friend for many years, Pat O’Keeffe felt a Fair Day would be an appropriate way to celebrate his life due to his lifelong passion for farming and his love of attending many different fairs throughout the county and indeed country. The added motivation of bringing back an old tradition to Castlemaine Village and raising funds for Kerry Hospice Foundation at the same time were key factors in deciding to proceed with the memorial event. Speaking following the cheque presentation to Kerry Hospice Foundation, John’s daughter Cathy said: “We couldn’t have done it without the incredible assistance of the Castlemaine Events Committee, the farming community, locals, An Garda Siochana, St Joseph’s National School Castlemaine, Sayers Insurance, Castlemaine Community Centre, Department of Agriculture officials, very generous local businesses and the unwavering support from Evelyn and Mary Shanahan of the Kerry Hospice Foundation. “A huge thank you also to the amazing doctors, nurses and carers who looked after my father so well during his short time in the Palliative Care Unit back in 2020. It was a great pleasure to present the cheque on Saturday evening to the Kerry Hospice Foundation alongside Castlemaine Events Committee and some members of the farming community on behalf of Castlemaine and its surrounding areas. “I’d like to express my gratitude to all of you that gave very generous donations before, during and after the Fair Day. Your contribution is greatly appreciated. It is impossible to mention everyone as some gave contributions through sponsorship prizes, supplying equipment/ entertainment on the day, volunteering, purchasing tickets, donating or bidding at the auction etc so I wish to reiterate that your support is so valued. “It is the intention that this will now become an annual event as not only does it help raise funds for the wonderful service that the Kerry Hospice Foundation provides, it will also help keep my father’s memory alive.

A step in the evenings… It’s great to see the evenings get longer and the sense of spring coming our way. Apart from all the huffing and puffing going on in gyms and along walking trails as part of our New Year resolutions, a more leisurely pace will surely follow as we slip in to February on Lá ‘le Bríde which looks like becoming our new annual Bank Holiday Weekend from 2023! Oh Happy Days…….

Tá sé deacair teacht le cheile faoi láthair le cursaí Covid ach is feidir linn teacht le cheile i slí sábháilte, sláintiúil agus a bheith ag comhrá le cheile amuigh faoin aer. January is the month that all the planning and preparation moves into full gear and so, lots of news and things to do to pop into your diaries! Walking Meetings on the Dingle Peninsula with Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (DPTA) / Cruinnithe Siúlóidí Timpeall an Leithinís le Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorcha Dhuibhne (CTCD) CTCD/DPTA are organising walking meetings around the peninsula from next week as part of a consultation process with tourism operators, local community development groups and community. DPTA is currently putting it’s next five year plan together and we are looking for your input. CTCD/DPTA is a not-for-profit community tourism organisation with representaton across the peninsula run by a voluntary committee representing tourism interests and supporting community development groups. It is challenging organising meetings these days because of the Covid pandemic but we can meet in a in a safe healthy way in the great outdoors. To begin, meetings are being organised in Camp, Annascaul, Inch, Lios Pól, i mBaile an Daingin, i gCeann Trá, i nDún Chaoin, I mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh, i mBaile na nGáll, Clochán/ Bhréanáin and Castlegregory/Maharees. There is no doubt that sustainability will be at the heart from any sector and tourism is no exception. What does sustainability mean? Could the Dingle Peninsula be a leader as a sustainable destination? And how could tourism be part of a sustainable future for all on the Dingle Peninsula? We need your input and ideas for the sustainable development of tourism on the Dingle Peninsula so please be a part of this inclusive planning process. D’fheadfadh Corca Dhuibhne a bheith ina ceannaire mar cheann scríbe inbhuanaithe? Agus conas is feidir le turasóiracht a bheith mar chuid de thodchaí inbhuanaithe do na héinne i gCiairraí Thiar? From the 1901 Census in West Kerry

fallen trees for landowners in their woodlands or along roads following storms. Did he need to do strenuous work at his age? Maybe he liked to work or had no choice.

Ted Creedon

It would be another eight years before the Old Age Pension was introduced in Ireland in 1909. Sawyer also became a surname. A famous fictional character of that name is Tom Sawyer, created by the writer Mark Twain.

The 1901 Census was taken on Sunday 31 March. In the last issue we looked at some of the more unusual occupations listed on form A of the census in West Kerry. We had a ‘Chapman grocer’, a ‘Steam riser’ and ‘Creamery engine drivers’. Here are some more declared occupations which are unique in the West Kerry Census records. Sea Diver. John Brick, 30, from Ballyguin, near Brandon, was the only person in West Kerry to give ‘Sea Diver’ as his occupation. So, how did he make a living from sea diving in 1901? Was he involved in wreck surveying, the inspection of piers, salvage, the recovery of victims of drowning or maybe all of the above? He was a single man so maybe he was home on a break from working elsewhere or on leave from the navy. Someone reading this may know. Hostler Patrick Driscoll, 35, lived in Gate Street, Dingle, in 1901. Where? Yes, Gate Street – not Dykegate Street. Never heard of it? Most people haven’t and we’ll get back to it. Meanwhile, what about Patrick Driscoll? He recorded his occupation as ‘Hostler’ and, like John Brick above, was the only person in West Kerry to register that occupation in the census.

(Why is there a ‘y’ in Sawyer – why not Sawer?) Quilter Margaret Begley, 50, was a boarder and a widow in the home of John and Mary Moriarty in Doonsheane. Her occupation was listed as ‘Quilter’. Like the other people mentioned above she was the only listed quilter in West Kerry on Census night 1901. She was born in Kerry, spoke Irish and English but whether she was a local or a journeywoman quilter is unknown. (Quilter also became a surname). Gate Street A House of Commons report on town boundaries in Ireland, published in 1837, refers to Goat Street while a map or plan of Dingle accompanying that report names it Gaol Street.

The first Ordnance Survey map of Dingle, from the 1840s, shows Gate Street in that area. Dingle was a walled town in the early 17th century and there may have been a gate at that end of the town at one time. When you access the 1901 census online, scroll down to Kerry and then Dingle, there you’ll find Gate Street listed. The Census Form A records the hand-written entries of the inhabitants of Gate Street. The enumerator, R.I.C. Sergeant James Graham, on the accompanying Form N records Goat Street. Confused? There’s more. When the hand-written entries were transcribed to print they refer to Gate Street again. More confused? Join the queue!) More in next issue.

A hostler was someone who looked after the horses of people staying in an inn or hotel, according to various sources. The name could also refer to a groom, stableman or a person who hires out horses. Returned American Everyone in every household had to be recorded, including visitors, on Census night in 1901. Thomas O’Connor, 60, was a visitor to the home of Michael and Mary Sullivan of Gowlane East. On the census form he recorded his occupation as ‘Returned American’ and was the only person in West Kerry to do so. Obviously, that declaration wasn’t a genuine occupation so was he just being mischievous ?

He was born in Kerry around 1840. Did his family migrate to America after the Great Famine or did he go as an adult? Why didn’t he state ‘Returned Yank’? That was the common term in Ireland for returning emigrants who may have done well in America and the appellation gave them a particular status in popular Irish culture. Sawyer. Patrick Keane, 75, lived in a house on Grey’s Lane with his wife Bridget, a nurse, and daughter Delia, a dressmaker. He gave his occupation on the census form as ‘Sawyer’ and was the only person to record that trade or profession in West Kerry. What did he do? Probably sawed timber for fuel or for supplying to carpenters. Perhaps he sawed

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Bliain nua faoi mhaise daoibh ó gach éinne sa Hub. Súil againn go bhfuil bliain maith agat go dtí seo, go háirithe leis an aimsir álainn le gairid.

Castlegregory were very inspirational in how they talked about their futures and what their approaches are to climate change. You can watch the episode back on the RTE Player, on our website www.dinglepeninsula2030.com New Faces Who are these two walking down the lane in Cooleen with Maggie from the Hub? More in our next update!

Hope you’re having a happy new year so far and that you are enjoying the recent good weather.

Tá an clár fós le feiscint ar sheinnteoir RTÉ, nasc ar www.corcadhuibhne2030.com Dingle Hub took part in RTÉ’s ‘Change Makers’ programme shown earlier in January, a 6-part series showcasing the remarkable and lasting public impact of leading research projects by eight universities in Ireland in areas such as children’s health, health technology, education, youth justice, gender equality and inclusion, as well as the environment. Dingle Hub featured in the second episode, with a focus on environment & energy. The episode gave an insight into the kind of research that is helping hugely with the work we’re involved in with our Dingle Peninsula 2030 initiative. Dinny Galvin from Lispole showed the advantages of the technology installed on his farm and the students from Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh

We want to connect with people working on the peninsula and strengthen your network. It’s not necessary to have or use a physical desk or office space in the Hub to be part of this wider network. We all want a vibrant, diverse and dynamic community. So if you have started working from here or are maybe considering a part-time or permanent move to the Dingle Peninsula, link in with us. Particularly, if you are self-employed, remote working or starting up a business and would benefit from being part of something bigger. Perhaps you are in a position within your business to bring remote working opportunities with you and build a team from here? We want to hear from you!!

Change Makers Bhí Dingle Hub le feiscint ar RTÉ1 tús mí Eanáir. Sa chlár ‘Change Makers’ bhíomar ag léiriú an sórt taighde atá ag cabhrú go mór leis an obair atá idir lámha againn maidir le Dingle Peninsula 2030. Bhí an feirmeoir Dinny Galvin ó Lios Póil ag caint faoi na buntáistí atá ag baint leis an teicneolaíocht nua atá ar an bhfeirm aige. Thug na scoláirí ó Mheán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh Castlegregory inspioráid dúinn ar fad agus iad ag caint faoi a dtodhchaí ó thaobh athrú aeráide de agus a smaointe a bhí acu chun dul í ngleic léi.

New Spaces We’ve been making some improvements to the workspaces in the Hub in Cooleen. The latest addition are two privacy booths. These are advantageous for somebody that wants to work in splendid isolation or just for taking a confidential phonecall once in a while.

As per current government guidelines, we are open for clients who have no alternative workspace. How Language Works le

Alexandra Aikhenvald foilsithe ag

Profile Books

‘Every language in the world shares a few common features: we can ask a question, say something belongs to us, and tell someone what to do. But beyond that, our languages are richly and almost infinitely varied: a French speaker can’t conceive of a world that isn’t split into un and une, male and female, while Estonians have only one word for both men and women: tema. In Dyirbal, an Australian language, things might be masculine, feminine, neuter - or edible vegetable. Every language tells us something about the people who use it. In I Saw the Dog, linguist Alexandra Aikhenvald takes us from the remote swamplands of Papua New Guinea to the university campuses of North America to illuminate the vital importance of names, the value of being able to say exactly what you mean, what language can tell us about what it means to be human - and what we lose when they disappear forever.’ - Profile Books

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Beidh sé ar ár ngob againn go Bealtaine mar a bhfuil an domhan ag téamh. Deirtear go raibh an bhliain is teo le cuimhne na ndaoine againn anuiridh. Dá raghfá siar fada do dhóthain gheobhfá ré ná raibh ann ach ba gainimhe. Déarfar leat agus is fíor, go mbíonn sé an- fhuar i gCanada sa Gheimhridh agus te sa tSamhradh. Creid nó ná creid bhí sé 49.4 céim Celcius i mbólaí áirithe i gCanada anuiridh.

Lá stop sé lasmuigh do shiopa in aice Abha na Laoi. Nuair a tháinigh sé amach, cé ná raibh sé ach timpeall cúig nó sé do neomataí bhí ticéad párcála ar a chairt. Ní ag paidreoireacht a bheadh Breandán, cé go mba dhuine é nár chuala riamh ag eascainí ná ag mallachtú. Bhí sé bailithe do féin.Tháinig buachaill anall chuige agus dúirt leis, ‘má thugann tú cuig púint dom ní baol duit.’ Nár thug. Rith an fear óg síos cois na habhann mar shí gaoithe. Agus é ag gabháil thar fhear na dticéidí shnap sé an leabhar uaidh agus chaith isteach sa Laoi é. Lean sé ag rith. Thagadh Breandán agus Helen scata turais ar Bhaile ‘n Fhianaigh deire seachtainí agus saoirí. Bead ag cur sios ar an gCaomhnóir agus Iris Nollag Chomharchumann Dhún Chaoin sa chead alt eile.

Thárla tinte móra mar a bhí sna Stáit Aontuithe. Má thagann aon ruaine do seo chugainn, deir an tarraingreacht go mbeidh sé ár scóladh. Mar sin, má tá aon pheacaí marfacha ort téir dtí faoistine go luath.

Ceisteanna

Tá fuascailt aimsire againn anseo le seachtain a chuireann laetheannta breá an tSamhraidh i gcuimhne dhúinn. Deirtear gur cheart duit scata mion eachtraithe a bhrú ar do chroí, gan a bheith ag cnáimhseán coitianta, agus tamall a chaitheamh ag gáirí gach lá.

2. Cá maireann na cuite?

Bhíos ag éisteacht le agus ag féachaint ar bhean agus beirt chlainne ag léamh an tSaoiscéil ag an Aifreann ar an nDomhnach ar an mBuailtín.

5. Cá maireann an coinín?

3. Maireann an capall? 4. Cá maireann an bhó? ,

1.Sa Mhuclas 2.I gConachar 3.I Stábla 4.I gCró

5.I bpoll nó coinicéar

Freagraí

Ní chuala le fada blas chomh milis, tomhaiste, nadúrtha Ghaolainne. Bhíodar tofa ar fad.

1. Cá maireann na muca?

Airgead Bhí an-phraghas ar uain roimh Fhéile na Nollag agus is dócha go bhfuil fós. Bhí na beithigh sásúil leis. Dúirt fear liom go bhfuair sé 150-160 euro ar uain monarcan a saolaíodh deire an Mhárta seo caite. Ní raibh dóthain ann don margadh. Deirtear [ag eolaithe] má cuirtear fiailnimh ar fhiailí go mbeidh scata dhó ar an bhféar a íosfaigh caoire agus ba. Beidh-tá- an duine ag ithe caoirfeoil agus mairtfheoil agus á mharú féin d’réir a chéile. Nár ghaibheadh éinne agaibh aon ruaine don nimh! Na Mairbh Bhíos ag scríobh giota fé Mhaitias Ó Dúbhda ó Bhaile na Leacan, an Clochán i leabhar fé eachtraithe im shaol trí lá ó shoin nuair a chuala go raibh Maitias marbh. Is ar an oíche sin a fuair sé bás. Bhí sé anonn sna naochaidí. Bhí an-aithne agam air agus bhíodh an-chur is cúiteamh againn coitianta. Poblachtánach neamheaglach go smior b’ea é agus bhí an aigne sin aige ó bhlianta na Tuisciona. Chaith se seal i bpriosún de bharr a dhílseacht don bPoblacht agus mianta na n-Óglach. Bhí sé fírinneach agus cleachtúil. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag t-anam a Mhaitiais. Is meala mór é dod dheirfiúr Mairéad agus dod mhuintir, dod ghaolta agus dod cháirde. Tá sé curtha i reilig an Chlocháin. Sár fhear. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. Fuair Terry Mac an Ultaigh bás le déanaí. Ba ó Thír an Úir i mBleá Ciath dó. Bhí sé pósta le Áine Ní Churráin ón nDaingean gur meala mor di a bhás agus dá gclann, Siobhán, Éibhlín, Ciara agus Aodán. Bhíodar ag cur futha ar an gCnoicín Glas sa Daingean. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a chaoin anam. Fuair Mairín Ní Dhálaigh Ruiséal, Uí Churnáin bás ar an 7ú Eanáir. Bhí sí agus a fear céile Labhrás Ó Cuarnáin agus a gclann ag cur fúthu ar an gCarraig, Baile na nGall. Méala mór a bás do Labhrás agus an chlann, Niamh, Labhrás, Susan, Sinéad, agus Máire- Eibhlín, a gaolta agus a cáirde. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a hanam. Cailleadh Séamus Ó Coileáin ón Muirigh Baile na nGall bás ar an 9ú lá do Eanáir. Méala mór dá bhean chéile Filimína agus a gclann Sinéad, Helen, Fionnuala, Louise, Mícheál, Seán, Seamus agus Ciarán, gaolta agus cairde. Bhí Séamus sna ochtóidí ach níor chaill sé suim riamh i sport go mór mhór capaill. Bhí capaillín aige uair agus bhaineadh sé an- shásamh as na ráiseanna agus scéalta seóigh. Fear cleachtúil. In Iothlainn Dé go raibh a anam. Fuair sean- chara liom Breandán Ó Guithín ó Bhaile ‘n Fhiadhnaigh bás ar 10ú la do Eanáir i gCorcaigh. Bhí an fear bocht breoite le tamall. Bheadh sé seachtó ocht bliain. Bhí sé ag obair don bPost ar feadh blianta i gCorcaigh. Méala mór a bhás dá chéile Helen, a gclann, Fíona, Mícheal agus Tadhg, a dheartháracha Tadhg, Seán agus a dheirfiur Máirín, a ghaolta agus a cháirde. Cailleadh deirfiúr eile, Aine, roimis. Bhí sean agus nua scéalta aige.
