The Dingle Marathon 2016 This Saturday September 3rd will see the 2,600 participants take part in the eight Dingle Full and Half Marathon. The past year has been one full of accolades for the event with the Dingle Half Marathon voted Half Marathon of the Year 2015 in the Running in Ireland Race Awards and more recently Runners World magazine selecting Dingle Full Marathon as one of the “52 Best Races in the World”. Dingle Marathon was the only Irish event to be selected by this huge international running magazine. The half marathon leaves Dingle Town at 9am from the marina and heads off in the direction of Ventry to Slea head and finishes near Dunquin. The full marathon has all the half has to offer but much more continuing on from Dunquin, the spectacular scenery continues to keep the spirit alive. As if the stunning scenery wasn’t enough, organisers have also laid on DJ’s, traditional musicians, samba bands, and Star Wars characters to motivate runners all around Slea Head. Due to large numbers of participants involved there will understandably be restrictions on traffic.

Garda Traffic Plan for Dingle/ Daingean Uí Chúis There will be traffic disruption around the town and the route through Corca Dhuibhne between 8.00am and 3.00pm on the day. It is the same route as 2015 with the finish of the half marathon at Krugers, Dún Chaoin. Milltown Roundabout to Main Street/Spa Road/ Mall Junction All traffic will be diverted from the West via the old Hospital. Main Street will be two way for the duration of the event. Parking will be restricted on the left hand side of Main St. / Goat St. from The Mall junction to Fairfield Close.

Seascapes Seascapes

Milltown Roundabout to Strand Street / Bridge Street This will be closed except during the following times - 9.15am – 11.00am, and should re-open at approx. 3.00pm. John Street John Street will operate one way from the Mall junction towards the New road. The Mall This will operate as normal. The Tracks / Strand Street No through traffic will be allowed enter Strand St. from the Tracks between 8.30am and 9.15am, and from 11am to 3pm. Vehicles may be facilitated to use the Marina car park subject to availability of spaces. Road Closures There are a number of Road closures along the Marathon route from 8.45am to 3.00pm and it is intended to keep disruption to a minimum. Please note that part of the Slea Head drive from Sayers Cross to Dún Chaoin will be closed to traffic between 9.15am and 12.30pm. Guest House proprietors along the route should advise their guests of these closures. The Half Marathon finishes at Krugers, Dún Chaoin and this will be completed by 1.00pm approx. Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 6th September the feature at the weekly Film Club will be the Franco-Belgian romantic comedy film Up For Love. The film follows the travails of Diane a well-known lawyer who has been divorced for three years. She loses her mobile telephone and receives a call from the person who finds it. That person is Alexandre, a charming man and the perfect gentleman. They make a connection over the phone and agree to meet up the following day. But when Alexandre arrives, there’s a surprise in store when Diane discovers he is only 4’ 6” tall. From that moment on, Diane tries to overcome the prejudices of society and her own fears to experience the best time of her life... The following week on Tuesday 13th September the feature will be the Woody Allen directed Cafe Society. Set in the 1930s the film follows Bronx-born Bobby Dorfman (Jesse Eisenberg) to Hollywood, where he falls in love, and back to New York, where he is swept up in the vibrant world of high society nightclub life. Centering on events in the lives of Bobby’s colorful Bronx family, the film is a glittering valentine to the movie stars, socialites, playboys, debutantes, politicians, and gangsters who epitomized the excitement and glamour of the age.

Dark Chocolate Tart, Salted Caramel Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School I think every cook should have at least one or two recipes for a chocolate dessert in their repertore. Regardless if you cook all the time or have never cooked or baked in your life this will be a fabulous centrepiece and definitely a talking point of any party. When I first started to learn how to cook I decided to pick a few dishes that I would love to eat and serve to friends. One of those sweet dishes was a chocolate tart simliar to this one. My first few attempts definitely would not have been to any standard to serve in a restaurant or café but I can remember that they tasted good and everybody seemed to like them. The feel good factor of thinking that I baked something tasty did give me a little confidence and the desire to learn more. The salted caramel is such a treat and if you increase the recipe you can put it in a jar and have it in the fridge for up to a week.

utes, or until just set. For the salted caramel Melt the butter in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Add the sugar, cream and salt and whisk until well blended. Bring to a very gentle boil and cook for about five minutes, whisking occasionally. Remove from the heat and add one teaspoon of the vanilla extract, stirring to combine and this is where you can carefully taste the sauce (mind it’s hot!) to see if you want to add additional pinches of salt or drops of vanilla. Tweak it to your taste, whisking well after each addition. To serve Place some caramel on a plate. Put a slice of the tart to the side of the sauce. To really treat yourself serve with some Murphy’s Raspberry Sorbet. Enjoy!!!

Give it a go and treat yourself.

Ingredients For the sweet pastry 300g flour 150g butter, diced 75g caster sugar 1 egg

Method For the sweet pastry Put the flour and sugar in a bowl, and using your fingers rub in the butter. Continue this until it resembles a sandy texture and there are no lumps of butter remaining. Mix in the egg. Bring this together and add a tablespoon of water if needed. Once this has formed a dough, cover it with cling film and allow it to rest in a fridge for about 30 minutes. To blind bake the pastry Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Roll out the pastry and palce it in a nine inch tart tin. Place some parchment paper on top of the pastry and add some baking beans to cover the pastry and to come up to the top of the tin. Bake this for about 15 mintues. Remove the parchment and the beans and bake for a further 5 minutes.

Creed Welcomes Agreement on €500m EU Aid Package for Farmers The EU Commission’s Management Committee recently agreed on proposals to give effect to the aid package for farmers agreed at the July Council. The package is designed to support market stabilisation across the EU’s dairy sector. The agreement puts in place the legal framework for the exceptional adjustment aid to milk producers and a package for the provision of aid for milk production reduction. This step paves the way for their adoption by the Commission College in early September. The key measures agreed in Brussels were: • Exceptional Aid to milk producers and farmers in other livestock sectors. This is a €350m package with individual MS allocations for them to undertake measures which best reflect their national circumstances. Ireland has been allocated €11.1m • Aid for Milk Production reduction: this proposal will fund aid to farmers who agree to temporarily reduce their milk output at a level of 14c/L. The budget for this scheme is €150m and there are no individual MS allocations. • An extension of the intervention period for SMP to the end of January 2017 and the next period beginning immediately after. Opportunities For New Female Entrepreneurs In Rural Areas Cedra funded initiative seeks up to 56 early-stage rural based female entrepreneurs for a business development initiative The second year of “ACORNS”, a six month part time development programme for aspiring rural female entrepreneurs is now in place. Job creation is a priority and an important focus of Foodwise 2025. The success of last year’s programme shows what a difference mentoring and peer learning can make to rural women in developing their new business ideas. Fully funded under the Department’s CEDRA Rural Development and Innovation Fund, the initiative is focused on developing the potential of female entrepreneurs living in rural Ireland who have recently started a business or who have taken concrete steps towards setting up a business. There is no charge for successful applicants. A core element of the ACORNS initiative is the involvement of ‘Lead Entrepreneurs’, who have already started and successfully grown businesses in rural Ireland. These business women, on a voluntary basis, facilitate the interactive round table sessions, act as role models and mentor the successful applicants. •

8 businesses began to trade for the first time during the pilot

• Of the 35 trading, 86% increased their combined sales by 43% during the pilot • 10 participants made export sales during the pilot, including five for the first time • Participants increased their total number of employees by 13% The deadline for application for this year’s ACORNS programme is Thursday 22 September 2016. Interested female entrepreneurs can access information and register their interest at www.acorns.ie. Eligibility To be considered for this ACORNS scheme, applicants must: • have set up a new business (no earlier than the 29th of June 2014), which they either own or part-own, or who are actively planning a new venture and have a clear idea of what they want to achieve. Indicators of actively planning a business would include organising the start-up team, sourcing equipment / facilities, money saved for the start-up, writing the business plan, etc.

Sheep Movements:- If a farmer takes in sheep for grazing over the winter months and he has sheep already on the holding then there is new rules to comply with. The movement must be notified to DAFM which is your local D.V.O. office. The responsibility of this movement is with the owner of the sheep. This notification is made by filling out the standard dispatch docket in your book and sending the pink copy to the local office for recording. Put on the pink copy that it is for the temporary movement of sheep. When these sheep are coming back to the holding of origin the owner sends in the white dispatch docket to the local office and the docket must be clearly marked “Return Movement from Temporary Grazing”. If the number returning is less than was originally moved then this must also be stated on the docket. Another point to remember is to send in your pink docket to your local D.V.O with seven days of a private sale or you could face a single farm payment penalty. Online Herd Register:- A great new service provided by the department of agriculture is the availability of an online herd register. This service is voluntary and you have to register for it online. It is a separate service to the online single farm payment and AIM system. From the time that a farmer registers online he or she no longer has to keep the blue book up to date. The blue book will be still kept to record the animal remedies as usual. Online Movement Of Cattle:- The department of agriculture has also set up a great online system were if the buyer and the seller are both online the movement of cattle can be done immediately online without the filling out of any paper. Land Eligibility:- All land must be stock proofed. You must be in control of the land, and must have independent access to the lands and must carry out the activity on the lands. You must make the appropriate deductions for rock and any other rough areas that can’t be grazed or are fenced off. Hedgerows are a landscape feature and they are eligible for single farm payment. Rivers and streams are not a landscape feature and have to be deducted from your single farm payment. Rushes/Ferns:- If there are rushes/ferns growing on your lands that you declare for on your single farm payment these lands will be eligible as long as there is evidence that the lands are being grazed during the year. You should try and cut and spray them during the year to keep them under control if this is possible. Designated Lands:- It is the responsibility of the farmer to know if their lands are SAC etc. Farmers are not allowed to damage wildlife. Contact the NPWS before any works are carried out on SAC lands. Herd Test:- It is proposed that any farmer that doesn’t carry out their herd test on time will incur a penalty under cross compliance. Animal Welfare:- The main issue relating to animal welfare is the docking of cows tails by dairy farmers. Please ensure that you follow guidelines and discuss any such issue with your vet, before taking any action. TAMS II deadline can be confusing, but the bottom line is that this/ these scheme(s) are running until 2020. Each scheme under TAMS II runs on quarter yearly tranches, whereby all applications submitted within each period is assessed at the end of a three month period. If you or your application are not ready for this deadline, you may apply on the next round and your application will be assessed for approval following that next deadline. The quarterly tranche deadlines falls approximately seasonally on 30th March, 30th June, 30th September and 30th December of each year, until 2020. There must be easier ways to explain this, but if you have any worries about closing dates and applications, discuss with your advisor. All applications must now be done on-line, so there will be a need to discuss this with him, anyway, should you wish to proceed with an application.

• live in rural areas as defined by CEDRA – all areas outside the administrative city boundaries of Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford and who commit to attending the developmental fora over two days in October 2016 and in April 2017 , the monthly meetings from November 2016 to February 2017 and to give the required personal commitment to advancing their business ideas over the 6-month programme duration.

Carbon Navigation for beef farmers participating in BDGS must complete their Carbon Navigation programme by 3sy October 2016, or in 60 days. This may be a long time to you, but if you leave it until the last minute, you may discover that you cannot be accommodated by your advisor as not everyone can be processed it the last week of October. Don’t get left behind, as failure to complete this CN application will most likely result in you being removed from BDGS with resultant financial consequences.

As the number of applicants will exceed the number of available places, there will be a competitive selection process based on the application forms received.

Interview: Canon Jack Mckenna Ted Creedon This interview with Canon Jack McKenna was broadcast on Radio Kerry on December 26, 2001 as part of the series South by South West. Canon McKenna, who was known to most people as Father Jackie, had served as a curate and parish priest throughout the diocese of Kerry during his lifetime. He was also a noted historian and had written two books on the history of Dingle and surrounding areas. His first parish was Ballyferriter and he wasn't long there The Stations on the Great Blasket.. "There was a radio/telephone on the Great Blasket in those days which was connected directly to the post office in Dunquin, so any sick call message was passed on to the post office in Ballyferriter and then on to the presbytery. The island population was ageing and I went there whenever there was a sick call. There was no church on the island so they came out for Sunday Mass in Dunquin, weather permitting. Indeed, the weather would have to be very bad to keep them from coming out. We had regular visits to the island for the Stations and that was generally in the month of May when we finished the Spring Stations on the mainland. We would send word to them that we would go in to the island whenever the weather was suitable. For instance, if they were at Sunday Mass and the weather on the Monday was suitable, wind and tides, they would send word, through the radio/telephone, that they were coming out for the priests.

There was only one child on the island when I was there. There were teenagers alright, some fine strapping young men but only one child. His name was Gearóid Ó Catháin and he was described as the loneliest child in the world. There was a family of Carneys there and there were a number of fine, big strong boys in that family. When we arrived there on the Stations day there was a great welcome for us. The people would be down at the landing place to welcome us and to help us up the pathway which was a bit uneven. They'd escort us up to the village or An Baile as they called it and the Station Mass was said in what was the little schoolhouse. The school was closed in 1941 when it was down to six pupils. The pupils were four Carneys and two Guithíns. The school had been there since 1866. But even though the school had been closed since 1941 the little desks and the blackboard were still there. The procedure was that I would say Mass first while Father Tom was hearing Confessions in the house next door which was the Carney family home. Then we reversed roles and Father Tom said Mass and I was available for Confessions. After the Masses we had breakfast in the Carney house. We used to fast from midnight in those days so after the trip across the Sound and the Masses you'd be ready for tea and a boiled egg. The people went home after the Masses for their breakfast but they came back again after that. There was a chair placed outside the Carney house for Father Tom and the people would gather around and sit on stools or an old box or on the grass or a ditch. Then we all had the most delightful conversation and chat with give and take. It was most enjoyable, and all in the beautiful, flowing Blasket Irish".

This could have been at six o'clock in the morning. So we got ready, Father Tom Moriarty, the parish priest and myself and the parish clerk, Joe Hoare and we went back to Dunquin harbour. There would be two naomhógs waiting for us to take us in to the island. So, Father Tom would be in one naomhóg and myself and Joe in the other. I suppose it took anything from an hour and a half to two hours to cross to the island. It was always a most pleasant day. I have very happy memories of the Station day on the island. It was a lovely experience. The first time I went into the Blasket was in the summer of 1938 when I was 18 years of age. I visited Peig in her house. She was in good health in those days. But on that day in 1938 there were 26 houses occupied by the islanders and a population of 106. The first year I went in for the Stations, in 1947, the population was down to 50. That was a big drop in nine years. I remember that going in there the following year the population was down to something like 35. It was falling gradually until they were evacuated in 1953.

Most Epic Of Games Throws Up Conflicting Emotions fell short by just one kick of a ball.

Tadhg Evans Rather than easing to a halt after the last screech of David Gough’s whistle, the roller coaster of emotions accelerated. Since one of the best matches ever played reached its conclusion four days ago, nobody in Kerry’s been able to settle on just one emotion for more than ten minutes. It’s not normally like this. When Kerry win, we smile, we gloat, we swap walking for bouncing. When Kerry lose, we snarl, we whine, we make for intolerable company. But it’s more complex this time, as this wasn’t a typical game. We’re recovering from a match in a million.

“Nobody in Kerry’s been able to settle on just one emotion for more than ten minutes.” I’ve felt bitter since Sunday. Because Dublin has a natural head-start on the lot of us. The county cradles more than a quarter of the country’s population, so why is the handicapper so gentle on them and so harsh on the rest of us? Why has Dublin’s team bus had to pierce the county bounds just once to reach a championship game in the last ten years? Why does our sport’s governing body fire more banknotes at these guys, of all guys, than it does at the other thirty-one counties combined? And why did the GAA ask a man who works in Dublin to referee last Sunday’s game?

I’ve felt acceptant since Sunday.

It might have been different had the brilliant Paul Geaney not been called aside. It might have been different had Kevin McManamon not been rewarded with a 45 for remonstrating without genuine cause. It might have been different had the bludgeoning of Peter Crowley not been deemed fair. It might have been different had we been compassionate to a fierce shook-looking Stephen Cluxton. If even one of the above could be changed, we’d be preparing for a ticket scramble. Instead, we succumbed to Dublin for the fourth time in four championship matches.

I’ve felt confused since Sunday. Because lots of people are accepting that Kerry lost with humility and dignity… and I’m still not sure if that’s a good thing. This isn’t the best or second best Kerry team that’s been seen, yet they ran Dublin’s greatest ever collective to within two points. The margin on Sunday was similar to last year’s All-Ireland final, but our reactions are unrecognisable from 2015’s. No Kerry supporter skulked from Croke Park last year feeling satisfied with what they’d witnessed, but this year we’re clinging to consolations… and I can’t think of a more un-Kerry thing to do. Have we reached the point where we accept defeats against Dublin? Is our response a sign of weakness, or are we just showing we’ve got a bit of class? I’m addled trying to figure out if our grace should be seen as a good thing or a frailty.

I’ve felt proud since Sunday. Because while Kerry could have won, they at least played fantastically. We lost to a superior team, but rarely allowed them to look superior. Right, it might not be very

Because for all the privileges that are passed to them, it’s still hard not to feel some fondness for Dublin GAA. Its supporters are cocksure, yet congenial, and its sky blue jerseys entice memories of a history that’s richer than a cup of Butler’s hot chocolate. Its current panel play 5 Week Programme the game in a swashbuckling, joyous Starting Wednesday 19th September manner by instinct, and if we’re going to lose, it may as well be to a county Slow Restorative whose philosophy on football is practi- Monday 19.00 -20.45 Basics Level 1 cally indistinguishable from our own. I’ve felt frustrated since Sunday. Because while the better team won, we also know the better team doesn’t always win. If but a few gentle tweaks could be made to history, last Sunday could have seen the better team beaten. They might be the best selection we’ve seen in decades, but while Dublin’s brilliance is patent, Kerry had them in a quandary. With only nine minutes left, we led by three points. Kerry to be in any way acceptant of defeat, but all the other attributes traditionally sewn into green and gold jerseys were in evidence on Sunday: positive football, fearless resistance, honourable endeavour, intelligent thinking, and ring craft. This was a magnificent game of football, and Kerry’s crack at the occasion contributed as much to its magnificence as our exquisite opponents. You know something, I think I might just settle on feeling proud.

Láthair Mhainistreach Chorr Áille / Currauly Monastic Site Isabel Bennett Tá ladhar maith láithreacha mainistreach lonnaithe ar Chosán na Naomh i gCorca Dhuibhne nó gairid go leor don gcosán oilithreachta agus Corr Áille is ea ceann acu. Is dóigh linn go raibh na manaigh a mhair insan mhainistir seo ag freastal ar mhuintir na háite máguaird. Láthair bheag í agus cosúil le roinnt eile dosna háiteanna seo, tá claí cloch mórthimpeall uirthi agus laistigh den gclaí tá reilig, scrín tuama nó leacht, crosleac (ina dhá chuid, agus ceann den dá phíosa curtha ina sheasamh bun os cionn, faraoir!), uaimh, clochán agus claí inmheánach a dhéanfadh dhá leath den láthair. Chomh maith leis sin, tá rian de dhá clochán laistíos don bhfalla, agus slí isteach go dtí uaimh talúin i gceann acu. There are many early medieval monastic sites situated throughout Corca Dhuibhne, some of which are on or near the ancient Cosán na Naomh (Saints’ Road). One of these is that at Corr Áille, which you pass as you descend the Cosán from Rinn Chonaill (having ascended the hill from Cill Mhaoilchéadair at its other, western side). Corr Áille is perhaps not as well-known as some of the other similar sites on the peninsula, maybe because tiredness is setting in when it is passed as you walk along the Cosán! But its situation right on the path might indicate that it was originally established to provide shelter or other necessities to pilgrims. The site, similar in ways to the excavated example at An Riasc, has many of the components that one would expect to find in these monasteries. There is an enclosure, made of stone, with a clochán within it, where the occupants would have lived. There are also remains of two clocháin built into the outside (north-east) of the enclosure wall, but these presumably postdate the primary use of the site, although in one is situated the opening into a souterrain or underground passage, making it possibly as early as the 8th or 9th century AD in date. Perhaps these clocháin were for the use of pilgrims along the Cosán? Also within the site is a broken crossinscribed stone, with a portion of it 26 West Kerry Live

re-erected, although this seems to have been placed upside down! The intact stone had two crosses carved on it, one of which has two large spirals coming out of the top. Where the carved stone is situated appears to be a leacht, perhaps marking a special burial place. There are traces of an internal dividing wall, which would have separated the sanctuary area (burial ground and perhaps a church) from the more ‘secular’ part of the site (habitation and working area). Mid-19th-century records indicate that the site was then in use as a children’s burial ground, and there are some possible grave markers from this period. To learn more about similar sites, and Cosán na Naomh, visit Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, www.westkerrymuseum.com. The museum is open 10.00 am – 5.00 pm each day, tel: 066-9156333 or info@westkerrymuseum.com. There is a café with fresh baking daily, a bookshop, and Wi-Fi. Buail isteach ag an Músaem chun tuilleadh eolais a fháil. Tá siopa leabhar, caife agus Wi-Fi ar fáil ann. Bíonn an Músaem ar oscailt gach lá óna 10.00 r.n. – 5.00 i.n. Beidh fáilte romhat.

Remembering Huguenots and Palatines Francish Kingdom and the Holy Roman Empire. Post-reformation they embraced the teachings of Martin Luther and became targets for persecution by their Alsatian neighbours. In 1709, 13,000 Palatines made their way to England also with the support of Queen Anne. From there three thousand were dispersed to Ireland with around a third of that number settling permanently. Palatine names are still in existence in many parts of Munster including west Kerry. Indeed the Benner of Dingle's Benners Hotel is one such. Austin Bovenizer who runs the Irish Palatine museum and website points out that when the Huguenot persecutions occurred members of that community fled to the Palitinate then intermarried and would have been part of the later Palatine migration. In Annascaul the Hoffmans, whose family grave survives in the old graveyard, are here since 1850 when they migrated from the Palatine community in North Kerry, and are happily still flourishing.

Bert McCann Graveyards are often chronicles of the life of a community suggesting human frailty and tragedy but also dynamic lives. So, now as autumn draws in, the Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group is turning its attention to local heritage and especially the old Church of Ireland graveyard situated near the centre of the village, and the church which used to stand there.

Though the 'Topographical Dictionary of Ireland' of 1837 sets the date of the building of the church as being 1816, there is recorded evidence of there being an earlier place of worship on the site which faces the foot of the Ardrinnane road sometimes referred to back then as the protestant road. JA Murphy's 'The Church of Ireland in Kerry' notes a report of a building in good repair there in 1810, but which was rebuilt or enlarged shortly after that date. The dictionary also suggests that there was a glebe house used by clergy in the area as early as 1750. It Gravestones redolent of tragedy though are also then goes on to say that the 1816 edifice was raised officially recorded. One it seems bore the simple by utilising a loan from the Board of First Fruits. This inscription 'Body of a seaman'. A British ship the latter organisation set up by the British Queen, Anne The Hoffman family grave 'Florence Graham' which was bound for Liverfunded the setting up of protestant churches and pool after sailing from west Africa was driven was the brainchild of satirist Jonathan Swift, author of 'Gulliver's Travels' ashore on Inch Bar with loss of twelve of its seventeen man complement himself an ordained vicar and seemingly a habitual and ambitious con- in January 1861. This anonymous matelot was laid to rest unmourned in fidante of nobles and royalty. Annascaul after being washed up shortly after in Bunaneer. Eighteen There are few gravestones remaining in the graveyard, but the existing Church of Ireland records point to calamitous events or colorful characters who lived around the village. In addition, anecdotal evidence accessible locally sometimes provide highlights of lives unrecorded in detail on stone memorials. One such was Madame de Gue who according to a piece published in the Kerryman in 1991 was French Huguenot by descent. In the 17th and 18th centuries French Calvinist Protestants were persecuted and alienated by a Catholic monarchy, causing as many as 500,000 of them to flee the country. As religious persecutions go, that meted out to the French Huguenots as they came to be named, was severe. St. Bartholomew Day's of 1572 saw the loss of 30,000 lives in a massacre that was something of a watershed marking the relationship of this Protestant Calvinist minority and their Catholic neighbors. In fact the slaughter started on that saint's day 24 August and continued through to 3 October and was carried out in towns and cities the length and breadth of France. Come the 17th Century there was a general dispersal of these theologically independent-minded citizens many of whom migrated to Ireland often via England with a small number of pioneers settling in West Kerry and specifically in Annascaul. Madame De Geu a descendant of that community was a figure of some controversy in the village. She was an associate of Lady Aberdeen, a campaigner for good public health and later founder in 1907 of the Women’s National Health Association which brought practical help to communities in the battle against TB. Madame de Geu was even more advanced in her thinking and was also an early campaigner for birth control. In late nineteenth-century rural Ireland one imagines that would have placed her between a rock and a hard place. Reputedly she was dispensing condoms in order to enable people with TB to avoid producing children who would themselves be vulnerable to the disease. The late publican Dan Foley reminiscing in the aforementioned Kerryman article remembered the old people talking about it. 'It was believed by some that she was in league with devil and of course the parish priest did nor approve of her at all.' When she died she was buried in the graveyard in September 1890. De Geu's forebears, were followed a number of years later by refugees from the German Palatinate, now the modern state of Hesse. They had a similar story to tell. Natives of south-west Germany, they were regularly invaded by French troops from neighbouring Alsace. From the 10th Century the Palatines had been people of some standing in the 34 West Kerry Live

years later another young man was laid to rest having died in a manner which all the sadder for its banality. Nineteen years of age and an RIC constable, he was sent on his first posting to Annascaul. On his first day of duty, he was sent out to patrol the village on a particularly rainy day and got soaked. Four days later he died of pneumonia and was interred in the churchyard on 15th November 1879. The old church has long gone now having been demolished in in 1968. It is said that some of the stonework was used in the construction of the schoolhouse built as part of the set for the filming of 'Ryan's Daughter'. However the exercise of record retrieval undertaken by ATTAG will ensure that that the settlers and strangers are not entirely forgotten and remain in the memory of this hospitable community.

Manx Shearwater Alert! The BirdWatchIreland West Kerry Branch is appealing to everyone on the Dingle Peninsula these next few weeks to be on the lookout for stranded Manx Shearwater fledglings. What are they? They are pigeon-sized, web-footed black and white seabirds that breed on the Blasket Islands. During the next few weeks this year’s fledglings are making their first big migration to the waters off Brazil and Uruguay where they will spend the winter months. Why are they stranding in our towns and villages? They are attracted and disoriented by the strong electric lights with which we surround ourselves. Once they crash land on roads and in gardens they are rendered helpless as they cannot take off from flat surfaces (they either need steep slopes or be on the water) and are vulnerable to predation by cats and dogs. What can you do if you find one? Please pick it up carefully and place it securely in a cardboard box. Do not give it any food or water and ring one of the volunteers listed below who will collect it and release it safely back to the wild. Four good reasons to get involved 1. Manx Shearwaters are long lived birds. The oldest ringed and recovered bird was 52 years old. By picking up and helping one bird you might help dozens of generations of shearwaters yet to come! 2. The shearwater’s parents have travelled all the way from South America to the safe breeding colony on the Blaskets in order to lay one single egg which they incubate for up to 55 days after which they feed the fledgling for a further 60-70 days. That’s a big effort for this protected, amber-listed little bird. It seems a small effort on our part to pick it up and release it again safely to give it one more go at finding its way south. 3. Usually they are entirely uninjured and just need a little help to get airborne again. 4. We have very few opportunities to get up close and personal with some of our more elusive wildlife. Shearwater can generally only be observed high out to sea from a boat as they breed underground on our remoter islands and only come back to their breeding burrows at night. This is a great chance for everyone

to find out a little bit more about the great biodiversity here on the Dingle peninsula and to help in a small but very effective way to protect it. Last but not least let’s consider switching off some unnecessary outside lights to prevent these birds from crash landing in the first place! A big thank you to everyone who has helped with the Manx Shearwater Rescue Project over the last few years!!! Britta (087 2435845), Richard (086 3168150), Madlen (087 4402907)

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor OBITUARY Michael, Micheál O Shea, Curradubh, Camp passed to his eternal reward recently at the great old age of 91 years. On returning from England over 20 years ago Micheál went back to farming again, he loved his sheep and was an avid gardening. Micheál’s daffodils in the shadow of Curradubh railway bridge were a joy to behold every spring and photographers and tourists from all over the world would stop to get a quick picture as they passed on their road to Dingle. He had lots of stories about the Dingle train and local history, many visitors called to him particularly in recent years for information on relatives when tracing their ancestry. He gave of his time freely and Mary and Micheál made many new friends from faraway places over cups of tea in their home in The Old Dispensary. And so Michaél, another Camp Footballer of yesteryear has joined some of his contemporaries who shared in a great era in the history of Camp football, an era documented in recent times in “The Story of Camp Football 1890 – 1953 written by Eoghan O Duibhne. Micheál was laid to rest in the Old Cemetary, Kilgobban after requiem Mass celebrated by Fr. Jerry Keane PP on Monday morning and He was waked at his home in Curradubh on Sunday evening. There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "ThermodynamCamp Community Childcare Centre ic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, Camp Community Childcare Centre offers you ask how! full and part time childcare. Creche from Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat6pump. The way it works a panel.isFree fitted to your roof which is connected months to 3 isyears Junior Preschool & to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar Free Preschool Places available from Septemto what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling ber 2016 point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, Monday toisFriday 8.30 – 6.00pm. where the gas compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity

to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at Camp Athlete a cost. Congratulations to Camp Athlete Ailise Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs Deane who recently completed theofKillarney on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot a water, so asuccessful typical hot water bill for a family Trialthon. After very rowing sea-of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year. son with Camp and The Maharees taking part A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to in€5,500 Regattas all fitted, overgiving the them peninsula, Ailise’s supplied and a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you takein into theis rising cost of enenergic performance allaccount codes truly ergy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years. amazing! Well done, Ailise and continued success in the future. And I have it from a reliable source that Ailise’s Grandfather, the late Tom Deane was indeed a great athlete too, he regularly outran all participants in The Annual Races in Camp Strand in the early 1920’s and Tom was a handy footballer too, playing with Camp, who won the West Kerry league in 1928. Más mian leat d'ainm a bheith luaite sa taispeántas scrígh é ar an gcárta san áit léirithe, ach más mian leat gan a bheith luaite fág an spás seo folamh. Trén gcárta a líonadh is a sheoladh chugham tánn tú ag tabhairt cead dom é a bheith mar chuid de thaispeáintaisí amach anseo. Geallaim duit gan é a dhíol nó a thabhairt uaim agus geallaim nach ndéanfaidh mé brabús as. D'fhéadfaí an obair a dhéanamh ag baint úsáid as aon mheán: peann luaidhe, marcóir, peann, srl., ach is 'líníocht' é. Tá sé oscailte ó thaobh tuisceana leis i dtreo is nach gá gur phictiúir de thigh nó áit a bheadh ann. D'fhéadfadh duine, peata ainmhí nó íomhá níos teibí a thagann chun cuimhne nuair a mhachnaíonn tú ar an gcoincheap 'baile' a bheith ann. Tá suim agam sna slite éagsúla ina dtéann an smaoineamh seo i bhfeidhm orainn uilig agus an slí ina gcuirimid seo in iúl go físiúil. Go raibh maith agat as a bheith páirteach!

Community Art Project: ‘Please draw your home’

Wild SUP Tours is reeistered with the Irish Surfinn Associaaon as a fully insured SUP School.

What, where or who is home? I would be delighted if you took part in this project which will culminate initially in an exhibition in the Dingle library in September 2016. It is open to anyone and everyone! I am collecting as many small artworks as possible by as many individuals as possible. Here’s how it works: Take one of the post cards and follow the instructions, then post it back through the post box in Dingle library or if you would like to take it away with you to complete then please add a stamp and pop it in the post. If you would like to have your name in the exhibition then please write that on the other side of the card where indicated, but if you wish to remain anonymous you may leave this blank. By completing and returning the post card to me you are agreeing that I can take care of your artwork and display it in future exhibitions. I promise never to sell or give away your card and I will never seek to make money from or for the exhibition, except to cover expenses. The work can be done in any medium: pencil, marker pen, biro and so on, but it is a ‘drawing’. It is also very much open to interpretation so it does not have to be a picture of a house, or even a place. It could depict a person, a pet, or a more abstract image that comes to mind when reflecting on the notion of ‘home’. I am interested in the different ways in which this notion is felt by us all and how we may interpret or express that visually. Thank you for taking part!

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Ceiliúradh Lúnasa ar an mBuailtín 2016 Táim anois tar eis mo 6ú Seachtain na Gaeilge a chaitheamh ar an mBuailtín. Táim ag teacht go Corca Dhuibhne gach Lúnasa ó 2011. Agus sin an cheist a chloisim i gcónaí – “Cad é an spreagadh atá agatsa Gaeilge a fhoghlaim”? Ach chomh fada is atá tú ar Sheachtain na Gaeilge ar an mBuailtín, ní bheidh easpa spreagadh agat go deo. Fuaireas féin an-spreagadh ó “dhaltaí” atá i bhfad níos sine ná mise. Dul chun cinn suntasach i nGaeilge a dheineann siad ó bhliain go bliain. Nuair a fhéachaim orthu agus nuair a chloisim iad, tuigim nach bhfuil se ró-dhéanach snas a chur ar do chuid Ghaeilge ag aois ar bith. Gheobhaidh tú a lan spreagadh agus dúil sa Ghaeilge o Ghaeilgeoirí eile go cinnte, is cuma cen leibhéal Gaeilge ata agatsa nó acusan. Teagascóirí díograiseacha iontacha a bhíonn ag tabhairt moladh agus tacaíochta dúinn le linn an Chúrsa. Bionn draíocht éigin acu i gcónaí ábhair chasta a dhéanamh i bhfad Éireann níos simplí. An bhfuil Tuiseal Ginideach deacair? Ó, ná habair liom é, níl aon fhadhb ag baint leis. Cé a dúirt leat go gcaithfidh Modh Coinníollach nó Clásal Coibhneasta a bheith deacair? Má tá tú tar éis Ceiliúradh Lúnasa a dhéanamh – na bac leis! Beidh córas agus tuiscint agat ar gach ceist ghramadaí. Beidh tú in ann pé rud ar domhain is maith leat a phlé i nGaeilge ghlan snasta, gan an iomarca airde a thabhairt ar chúrsaí gramadaí. Bhíos fein sa ghrúpa ag Maighréad Uí Chíobháin. Dá mbeadh gach teagascóir in Éirinn cosúil léithe, bí cinnte go mbeadh Gaeilge ag gach éinne sa tír seo. Aíonna speisialta thar mholadh beirte a bhí ag Seachtain na Gaeilge 2016! D’inis Danny Sheehy scéal dochreidte fén oilithreacht mhara ar an naomhóg go dtí an Spáinn. Scéal ar leith a bhí ag Mossy Scanlon fen dtraidisiún bainte móna ar Shliabh an Iolair. Ach dar liom, is iad an 140 mac léinn go léir réaltaí an Chúrsa. Tá a lán scéalta suimiúla ag na Gaeilgeoirí ó áiteanna ar fud an domhain. An-spórt go deo is ea é iad a chloisteáil sa rang nó sa tigh tábhairne! Tá Gaeilge fíorbhlasta ag “Toose” Mac Gearailt, ach is breá liom chomh maith pé sórt Gaeilge atá ag “daltaí” an Chúrsa. Thaispeáin Aisteoirí Bhréannain drámaíocht iontach i Halla na Feothanaí. Ach an bhfuil fhios agat cé chomh greannmhar a bhí an píosa drámaiochta ag “Aisteoiri Cheiliúradh Lúnasa”! Dá bhfeicfeá e, ní déarfa go deo nach raibh acu ach dhá uair a chloig de chleachtadh le chéile. Ceapann a lán daoine nach bhfuil siad in ann filíocht a chumadh no cúpla líne as Gaeilge a scríobh. Ach níl sé sin fíor ar chor ar bith! Is é an rud a thuigeas féin ar an mBuailtin go bhfuil éirim éigint scríbhneoireachta ag gach éinne. Níl sé ródheacair í a mhúscailt. Beidh “cúpla líne” scríte agat gan dabht le linn Seachtain na Gaeilge, má tá peann agus páipéar agat. Músclaíonn Seachtain na Gaeilge an-chruthaitheacht ionainn, i ngan fhios dúinn go minic. Tá éirim agus féith ag gach éinne, agus tugann Seachtain na Gaeilge deis dúinn iad a aimsiú agus a chleachtadh. Má cheapann tú nach bhfuil tu id amhránaí, id fhile nó id aisteoir fós – tar go dtí An Buailtín le haghaidh Ceiliúradh Lunasa 2017! Beidh comhluadar, craic, Gaeilge bhlasta, atmaisféar iontach agus tacaíocht iomlán agat ó gach éinne ar an mBuailtin. - Vitaly Kovalchuk

Learn How to Cook Healthy Food - For A Healthier You -

Richie Williams This week we are appealing for cooperation with traffic arrangements for the annual DINGLE MARATHON which takes place on this Saturday September 3rd starting at 9a.m. from the Marina Car Park. Some roads west of Dingle will be closed for a few hours and Main Street will be changed to a 2 way system until late afternoon with parking restrictions to allow for a free flow of traffic through town. The marathon start is a wonderful sight with 2500 people of all ages taking off together to tackle the half and full courses around Slea Head. Together with the Adventure Race in June there is no better or healthier way to experience the natural beauty of the Peninsula and a wonderful opportunity for us to promote all that is good in our area. Dingle Business Chamber are looking for VOLUNTEERS for 1 hour shifts between 11 o clock and 3 o clock on Saturday to help with traffic and safety matters on Milltown Bridge so if available please contact Patrick or John Sheehy as soon as possible While on the topic of activities I wish to appeal to walkers, cyclists or runners to please wear HIGH VISIBILITY VESTS or similar HIGH VIS CLOTHING while on the public roads and play your part in keeping our roads a safer place for all to travel day or night. Of course I must also appeal to MOTORISTS to please show courtesy to all other road users and slow down, show courtesy and give clear indication when overtaking vehicles or people. Arising from the recent tragic death of a tourist on the Conor Pass the important and responsible role we all share in parting good local knowledge and advice to our visitors has been highlighted. Perhaps we should all engage in conversation with our visitors a little more and give advice on areas to avoid in certain weather conditions. Generally people appreciate such guidance and it does not cost only a few minutes of your day but may well save serious injury or worst for unsuspecting strangers to Corca Dhuibhne.

What a wonderful asset this society is to our town!!!. THE LAB up in the CBS building in John Street is another wonderful local outlet which has shows and concerts of all types running throughout the year. Aine and her crew deserves more support particularly from the locals with details of their programme elsewhere in this edition.

Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential Service Small Claims Court Question I am not happy with work that I had done in my house by a builder and will have to pay for someone else to finish the job properly. What can I do to recoup the additional expense? Answer If your original builder is unwilling to compensate you, you may be able to pursue a claim against the builder through the Small Claims procedure. The aim of this procedure is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers to resolve disputes without needing to employ a solicitor. The maximum amount you can claim is €2,000. The Small Claims service is provided through local District Court offices. Anyone who has purchased goods or services for private use from someone selling them in the course of business may submit a claim using the Small Claims procedure. You can make claims for faulty goods or bad workmanship, minor damage to property and for the non-return of rent deposits for certain kinds of rented properties. Businesses involved in disputes with other businesses can also use the Small Claims procedure. To make a claim, you complete an application form, which you can get from the Small Claims Registrar at your local District Court office. You can also get help in completing the form from the Registrar. Make sure you use the correct name and address of the person or company against whom you want to make the claim. The completed form with a fee of €25 should be lodged with the Small Claims Registrar. You can also apply online at the Courts Service Online website, csol.ie. The Registrar sends a copy of your application to the person against whom you are making the claim. If the other party does not reply within 15 days of receiving your application, your claim will be automatically treated as undisputed and you can apply for a court order in your favour. But, if your claim is disputed, the Registrar will contact you and let you have a copy of the reasons why the other party is disputing your claim. The Registrar will try to negotiate a settlement to the dispute. If no settlement can be reached, the matter is then set down for a court hearing in the District Court. You can get more information on your options from the Citizens Information Centre below. Difference Between a Muscle Tear and a Muscle Spasm Eddie O’ Grady When treating somebody for a muscle injury, accurate diagnosis is very important. There are key differences between a muscle spasm and a muscle tear. The treatment and recovery times are very different. Often both conditions can be caused by the same thing, overstrain or overuse but they present differently. Usually with a muscle spasm there is a build up of tightness and pain over a period of time but it can also occur instantaneously. It is a protective mechanism used by the body to shut down or limit muscle activity and preventing further damage. Often with a muscle spasm you are able to keep going if you have to, although movement maybe more limited and painful. A muscle spasm can be worked out by proper deep tissue massage. Sometimes a bit of dry needling can help, but the hands-on work is paramount. Usually one or two proper sessions sorts out this condition. Once the muscle is loosened you are generally good to go, so recovery is quick. Apart from a bit of stretching, you generally don’t need rehab because there is very little damage done to the muscle structure as such. With a muscle tear, even a grade one you are stopped in your tracks. People sometimes describe it as ‘’like being stabbed in the muscle’’ when the injury occurs. You feel something give way within the muscle structure and you won’t be able to continue the activity your doing. The injured muscle will completely shut down. Because there is damage to the tissue structure here, most notably torn muscle fibres and the resulting inflammation, this injury has a longer recovery time and needs rehab. Your first port of call with a muscle tear is rest, ice and probably an anti-inflammatory. Some studies show that anti-inflammatories promote quicker recovery but that the resultant healed muscle structure is not as strong. However proper rehab and strengthening exercises should correct for this. The idea after all is to get the athlete back training/competing as soon as possible to prevent loss of fitness so I prefer the anti-inflammatory approach. With a tear you need to first get the inflammation to settle, hence the use of icepacks plus anti-inflammatories. Once the inflammation settles you can then start some gentle massage to further reduce inflammation and muscle tension, allowing the muscle to settle further. Working into the muscle too early with cross fibre friction and stripping will only open up the injury again slowing proper recovery. Rehab can be started as soon as the pain settles and movement starts to return to normal. This may involve something as simple as using the muscle the way you normally do in daily activity with no weight or stress initially...ie. just get back full range of movement. Stretching or deep tissue work shouldn’t really start until a scar has properly formed in the injured area....middle to late week three after injury. Again the intensity of the work is progressive. Intuition and experience by the practitioner is important here. Once the scar is properly formed within the muscle, the idea is to make that scar as small and as flexible as possible. Progressive strengthening/stretching is used both to rehabilitate the muscle and assess recovery. There are different grades of injury from grade 1(mild) - grade 3(full rupture or close), although more recently a grade 1 - 5 system is being used to differentiate out the degrees of injury more accurately. Full ruptures generally need surgery, for full recovery anyway. The body can often compensate somewhat but this is not ideal for performance. Tears close to tendons require a longer recovery period. From experience, half the time again on top of that of a muscle belly tear. A very rough guide to recovery is about 3 weeks for a grade one tear and 5 to 6 weeks for a grade 2 tear on the grade 1-3 system, again adding half that time again for injuries closer to the musculo-tendinous junction. If you have a big ball of scar tissue left at the end of rehab, generally the treatment has not been effective and the muscle will not be able to contract and relax like it should. This often results in further tears in the same area and makes recovery more complex. That is why ‘’proper hands-on work’’ is so necessary during treatment.

Clean Coasts are inviting volunteers to join this global coastal clean-up helping remove marine litter from our beautiful coastline and in turn protecting our coastal habitats and marine life. In 2015, Nearly 100 events were organise as part of Big Beach Clean weekend, involving 1,542 volunteers. An estimated 800,000 volunteers participated internationally with more than 8 million kilograms of litter being collected during this International Coastal Cleanup event.

The Myths and Magic of Tír na nÓg

pending on the road we pave for ourselves at the start. Being wellnourished, physically and emotionally will sustain us during our journey while Nature and good company will go along way to ensure we arrive safe, happy and healthy!

Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Nutrition Clinic & Healing Rooms, Dingle 066 9151360. Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com

Aging is a bizarre process when you think about it. It happens to most of us (if we live long enough) yet it is rarely mentioned until things start to go awry and “suddenly” we are deemed aged - a bit like Óisin, from Tír na nÓg, when he fell off that horse. There is a widespread acceptance that as we age everything about our bodies goes to pot - poor eyesight, wrinkles, sagging, creaky bones, stiff joints, mental decline and ill-health until eventually we shed our decrepit Earthly mantle and move on to other things! While life expectancy has improved greatly, particularly during the last century, we haven’t really managed to live longer in good health and intact. When health authorities are asked to explain the rise in cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis and type 2 diabetes, they always come back with “we are living longer” yet no-one explains or wants to explain, exactly why living longer should pose such a risk to our health!

Cllr Michael D O’Shea

Determining when men and women reach their physical peak has been difficult to establish but most evidence concurs it happens sometime in our 20’s – earlier for men and more towards the 30’s for women. Irrespective of the age, once we have peaked, aging begins much like a path that lies ahead of us. In the Western world, genetics, diet and lifestyle are most influential in determining if that path is a long, straight road with few bumps or potholes along the way, or if it will be an uphill struggle with challenges and obstacles, curving or twisted or if it will be a short downhill sprint to an untimely death. Our health status at the time of our peak, arriving at the start line, is a critical factor on how well we age into the future. With rising obesity levels and associated health problems, particularly among our young people, the aging process is more often kicked off on the wrong footing from the beginning and the path set out for many of this generation and the next is far from smooth or long. Free radical damage is probably the number two factor in the aging process, our starting point being number one. The free radical theory of aging states that organisms age because cells accumulate free radical damage over time. Free radicals are highly volatile atoms or molecules (the science bit!) that are unstable due to unpaired electrons. In an effort to become “paired” they will pull electrons from nearby atoms or molecules making those unstable and thus a chain reaction begins. Free radicals are responsible for damage to DNA in cells, cell mutations and loss of function of cells and instigating the onset and progression of many chronic, degenerative diseases. We create free radicals of our own through metabolic and cellular activity but we are also exposed to additional free radicals through pollution, UV light, smoking, chemicals, drugs, processed foods and denatured fats. The good news is that free radicals can be mopped up by antioxidants found in the food we eat, in particular from plants. Vitamins A, C, E, carotenoids, anthocyanins, selenium, zinc are just a few of the potent antioxidants found in true food sources, sadly missing from most modern diets. Apart from limiting our exposure to free radical damage from the outside, education on how to limit the free radical burden we create within our bodies needs to be addressed. Over-training and exercise, chronic stress and poor quality sleep are major sources of free radical damage. Óisín was doing great over in Tír na nÓg, free of stress and sorrow– it wasn’t until he tried lifting that stone (and fell off the horse) that he aged by 300 years! My own number three in the theory of aging (not so scientific) is to do with our connection with Nature, our fellow human family and community around us. Ill-health of the body is the physical manifestation of disharmony in our emotional self. In an attempt to connect the whole globe through technology, we have, in the process, cut ourselves off from our grounding, our natural Earth and our people. It has been demonstrated through many studies that with chronic unease comes disease. Depression, anxiety, mental illness and loneliness are most prevalent among the aged, not because they are living longer, but perhaps living longer disconnected from society and nature. In many traditions including our own – our elders were integrated and valuable members of every community. Much of modern living has interrupted and distorted the nature of our lives in its quest for a longer life, but at what cost? Tír na nÓg for us mortals can be more than a myth de46 West Kerry Live

Bhí scéal laochais ag na mionúir. Bhíodar tofa. Ní hé amháin go raibh Seán Ó Sé go diail, ach bhí scata dá leithéid ann, bail ó Dhia ortha. Seo é an triú babhta as a chéile go bhfuil siad sa Chraobh chluiche. Tá dhá cheann buaite ach agus is beag ná géillfeadh don dtuairim go mbeidh an bhua ar a socaracht acu sa chraobh, an mhí seo chugainn. Ní ag déanamh beag is fiú don nGaillimh atáim ach níor mhór do Ghaillimh rath na raithní a bheith ortha, le buachaint ar na Ciarraígh chíocracha óga seo. Glac leis go mbeidh trí chraobh mionúr as a chéile ag Ciarraí. Mar sin, tá tailte féarmhara rómpa..

Mic Léinn An tráth seo gach bliain bíonn scoláirí óga ag beartú cad a dhéanfaidh siad leo féin tréis torthaí na hArdteistiméireachta bheith fachta acu. Tá an bhrú chomh mór go meastar go bhféadfadh ná beadh cóiríocht ar fáil do scoláirí óga áirithe, mar go mbeidh mar deirid, an cíos ag bagairt rómhór ortha. Ná fuil sé in am ag an stát rialacha a bheith ann le chaighdeáin agus costais cóiríochta do scoláirí a réiteach agus gan iad a bheith ar an bhfán ag easpa árasáin nó seomraí.

Caid Briseadh croí caide eile in aghaidh Bhleá Cliath. Go macánta bhí Ciarraí go diail sa dara cuid don gcéad leath. Chuadar isteach sa mhullach ar na ciceanna amach agus d’éirigh go maith leo. Bhíodar in airde a láine ag leath ama. Bhíodar chúig phoinnte chun tosaigh. N’fheadar sa riach buí, conas nár fhágadar na tosaigh sa mhullach ar chosantóirí Bhleá Cliath sa dara leath. Sheasadar siar, mar go raibh chúig phoinnte acu ar na Jeaiciní. Seo é an príomh rud a bhuaidh ortha. An iomarca seilbhe bronnta ar na buachaillí cois Life. Measaim go b’é Paul Geaney an fear ab fhearr ar an ngort, ach tuigim gur gortaíodh é. Gortaíodh Donaghy agus Darren O’Sullivan chomh maith. Bhí cúpla duine a tháinigh chun páirce do Chiarraí, isteach sa chluiche a cheart a bheith ann ó thús. Tríd agus tríd bhí cúpla dearmad nár cheart a tharlódh. Ní thuigim fós nár lean Ciarraí leis an mbeartas a thug ceannasaíocht dóibh sa chéad leath. Ba dhoigh leat gur d’aon ghnó a gortaíodh an triúr seo againne. Tá Ciarraí go maith ach measaim gur chaitheadar uatha an cheannasaíocht a bhí acu tré dhul ar an gcosaint.

Leabhar na hAthghabhála

2016

Poems of Repossession 20th-century poetry in Irish eagarthóir Louis de Paor foilsithe ag Bloodaxe Books ‘This is the first comprehensive critical anthology of modern poetry in Irish with English translations. It forms a sequel to Seán Ó Tuama and Thomas Kinsella’s pioneering anthology, An Duanaire 1600-1900, Poems of the Dispossessed (1981), but features many more poems in covering the work of 26 poets from the past century. It includes poems by Pádraig Mac Piarais and Liam S. Gógan from the revival period (1893-1939), and a generous selection from the work of Máirtín Ó Direáin, Seán Ó Ríordáin and Máire Mhac an tSaoi, who transformed writing in Irish in the decades following the Second World Troubles, before the Innti poets - Michael Davitt, Liam Ó Muirthile, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Cathal Ó Searcaigh, Biddy Jenkinson - and others developed new possibilities for poetry in Irish in the 1970s and 80s. It also includes work by more recent poets such as Colm Breathnach, Gearóid Mac Lochlainn, Micheál Ó Cuaig and Áine Ní Ghlinn.’ - Bloodaxe Books
