On Wednesday 16th November they bring their music to Dingle, the home of their fiddler Jeremy Spencer for the very first time, performing in An Lab . Admission €10.

Tourism Action Plan Launched

• The promotion of Kerry’s green and clean image

KCC has Published a New Strategy for Tourism with 273 Actions to Grow the Industry in Kerry

• The development of projects with significant visitor appeal

Kerry County Council published a new seven-year action plan for tourism in Kerry which was launched at St John’s Theatre in Listowel on Friday 21st October by the Leas-Cathaoirleach of the Council, Cllr Liam Purtill. The County Kerry Tourism Strategy and Action Plan 20162022 comes following the most widespread consultation and in-depth analysis of tourism ever undertaken in the county. Kerry currently attracts 13% of all overseas visitors to Ireland and one in three American visitors includes Kerry on their itineraries. It has the greatest concentration of tourist accommodation outside of Dublin up to 50,000 beds in the approved and unapproved sectors. Kerry is also more dependent on tourism than any other county with over 20% of its workforce employed in tourism-related enterprises and has over 9,000 people directly employed in the accommodation and hospitality sectors. The new report sets out 273 specific actions to be implemented across seven key areas over the short, medium or long term, including: • Adventure • Branding and Marketing

• Further development of the Wild Atlantic Way and connected loops The vision set out in the strategy is “to maximise, in a sustainable manner, tourism’s contribution to the quality of life, economy, employment and local community development, paying particular attention to nurturing and protecting the natural, built, cultural and linguistic heritage of the county.” Joan McCarthy of Kerry County Council’s Tourism Unit said: “The Tourism Strategy which forms an integral part of Kerry County Council’s Local Economic and Community Plan 2016-2022, is a living document that will respond to new challenges, changing market trends and consumer behaviour and will be reviewed and updated annually.” If you want to see the full report go to www.kerrycoco.ie/en/media/ media,12811,en.pdf

Camphill News Betsie Konink Last Monday was Halloween, it being a bank holiday gave us all the time to make the place really scary, prepare lovely food and organise a great party. It was a nice break from all the business on the land and in the garden and workshops. We are enjoying the great weather which is a real help with getting the gardens ready for the winter. The old weavery is now completely gone and we are busy filling the hole in the ground and making the place safe. For the time being we will use the area as an extra parking area but maybe in the far future there might be a need for another workshop being. On Sunday the 20th of November we will have our annual craft fair from 1 to 5pm in the new workshop.

John Moore placates a Mountain Gorilla in Rwanda with the aid of his favourite publication

There will be some children activities, music, a cake sale (for which contributions are very welcome) and then the craft sale - candles, weaving and knitting, felting and jams and herb teas, and for the first time red sour kraut. There will be teas and waffles in the workshop kitchen or in the new house. There will also be a change to go to the forest and look for a Christmas tree. A big thank you to Tor who gave us boxes and boxes of the loveliest crockery and other small items. Especially the rainbow cups, mugs and teapots are very much appreciated. Looking forward to see you all on the craft fair The boys and girls who attended the sports camp in Lispole

Creamy Potato and Turnip Bake Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is such a nice warming creamy dish perfect to serve on the side of any roast or to serve with a winter green salad for a tasty supper dish. Ingredients 500ml cream 4 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed some thyme leaves, picked 1 large turnip, sliced finely and cut into discs 4-6 potatoes, peeled and sliced 50g Parmesan cheese, grated 20g butter, cubed 100g breadcrumbs, cooked in butter salt and black pepper Method Start by infusing the cream; to do this put a pot over medium heat, add the cream, garlic, thyme, and some salt and pepper. Cook this for about 5 minutes. Turn off and leave to infuse. Preheat the oven to 180ºC.

Tomás Ó Lúing a bhuaigh an príomh comórtas scéalaíochta ag an Oireachtas i gCill Áirne

Layer half of the potato and turnip slices in a large ovenproof dish, pour some of the creamy liquid over this then season with salt and pepper. Continue to layer in this order until all of the ingredients are gone.

31 Card Game

Cover the dish with tin foil and bake in oven for about 40 minutes. Meanwhile, melt the butter in a pan, add in the breadcrumbs and toss around until the breadcrumbs start to brown.

A fundraising game of 31 will be held in the Dingle Pub on Friday 11th November at 8pm in aid of the oncology unit at University Hospital Tralee. Tables of 8.

Remove the dish from the oven and discard the foil. Scatter the cheese and breadcrumbs over the creamy dish. Turn the oven down to 150ºC and put the dish back in the oven for about 30 minutes.

Farming News Louis Murchan Third Round Of Glas Launched The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD, has launched the third tranche of the Green, Low-carbon, Agri-environmental Scheme (GLAS). The first two tranches of GLAS, proved to be a major success, with a total of 38,000 participants approved into the scheme to date – a record number of entrants to any agri-environment scheme in a single year. The overall target for GLAS is to attract at least 50,000 farmers into the scheme over its lifetime and Minister Creed commented that it was clear that GLAS was well on its way to meeting that target. In relation to the first two tranches of GLAS, some of the headline outcomes were as follows: •

243,000 ha of permanent pasture will be conserved

12,000 km of water courses will be protected

75, 000 ha of endangered bird habitat will be brought under sustainable management

• Commonage Management Plans will be prepared for over 75% of commonages. •

13,000 ha of wild bird cover will be planted, providing up to 19,000 tonnes of winter feed for wild birds.

For the third and final tranche of GLAS, a small number of adjustments are being made to the actions available under the second tranche. Some, will make it easier for farmers to adapt to the new regimes required, and will encourage greater uptake of measures. Others respond to the fact that we have achieved or exceeded targets in some areas.

to 14. The optimum Ph. for good grass growth is 6.3. Ryegrass and clover perform best at this Ph. and if it drops below this level it will lead to the establishment of poor unproductive grasses. Lime promotes the activity of worms and soil micro-organisms in the soil and it increases the availability of the different nutrients to the plants. This makes chemical fertiliser work more effectively and with the high cost of fertiliser this is very important. A small amount of lime every year is better than a lot in the one spreading. Cost Of Taking A Soil Sample And Lime:- An average soil sample for Lime, P, and K will cost €20.00 plus vat and the more in depth ones will cost more. Lime is very cheap compared to the cost of fertiliser and an average price would be €20 per acre spread depending on the lime and the contractor etc. Applying Lime And Slurry And Urea:If you apply lime first then you have to wait 3-6 months before you apply slurry or urea If you apply slurry or urea first then there is no problem when you apply lime If you apply the lime first and then you apply slurry or urea it will cause ammonia volatilization which is a loss of money basically. Getting Ready For Winter On The Farm The winter is upon us and it won’t be long before we are putting cattle into the sheds. There is still some time left to get these jobs done and be winter ready. Grassland The main aim here is to extend the grazing season as long as possible into the Autumn this will help to shorten the winter feeding period. Prioritise the best grass to the correct stock like calves and lambs for fattening and beef cattle. Now is a good time to apply lime as the land is still dry and tractors can travel on the lands

Farmers are urged to present the highest standard environmental plans under GLAS 3 and to adopt actions that would promote them to from Tier 3 to a higher tier to increase their chance of selection into the scheme. Over 80% of applicants in the second tranche of GLAS opted to do so and were approved. The Minister announced that the Terms and Conditions for the third Tranche of GLAS, along with the detailed Specification for Tranche 3 actions will be published immediately. He asked farmers and their advisors to read these carefully. The live online system for applications opened this week and will remain open for six weeks. Closing date will be 15th December 2015.

Take soil samples at this time of year as long as the land is eight weeks clear from all fertilisers.

Soil Sampling - Essential Reading With the slurry and fertiliser closed period coming to an end now is a good time to get your lands soil sampled as the lands have been free of slurry and chemical fertiliser for the correct period of time to get an accurate reading.

Repair all gates and barriers

How To Soil Sample- This is done with a soil sampler which is placed into the soil at different locations in the field in the shape of a W. The soil is then placed into a bag or a box and sent away to a registered Laboratory. Your agricultural advisor will come out to your farm and take the soil samples for you and will send away the samples to a designated laboratory Soil samples can be taken on fields growing any crops and when the soil samples return your advisor can do up a Fertiliser plan tailored to the crop you are growing.

Apply a post emergence spray on any reseeds at 5-6 weeks after you sown the grass seed. Use a clover safe spray like Clovermax or Clovex were clover is contained in the grass seed Around The Farmyard Clean out all houses from the previous winter and disinfect properly Check for damaged slats. Look at the grant aid available. Repairs street and shed lights. Grant aid available Clean out and repair all drinkers in sheds and fix any leaks Repair all tractors and machinery Livestock Scan all cows and take the appropriate action after results. Cull all empty cows and heifers for slaughter or selling at the mart Start creep feeding the calves to break the link with the cow and prevent stress at weaning Feed calves 1kg per had per day of a good creep ration with 16% crude protein for about 6-8 from post to pre weaning.

Soil analysis:- Farmers submit soil samples for laboratory testing for two main reasons 1. Establish the available minerals present in the soil. This will enable the farmer and his adviser to determine the most appropriate fertiliser regime for the crop being grown. 2. Compliance with regulatory requirements. These come from EU Directives that specify criteria such as pH value, Phosphorus index and Organic Matter content

Look at the cattle for the factory if they are close to the slaughter weight start and feed at grass about 3-4 kg per head per day

The Commonly Tested In Soil Are:- PH, Lime requirement, Phosphorus and Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Boron.

This will prevent them take pneumonia while housed

Organic Matter levels Does your land Need Lime:-Lime is necessary to correct soil acidity and facilitate healthy plant growth. Soil acidity is measured on the pH scale 0 12 West Kerry Live

If they are far away from slaughter weight then house these cattle as you will get them to the weight quicker Treat all animals for worms and fluke before housing. If you can treat a few weeks before housing to reduce stress or leave them until they are housed for a period and settled down then does them. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Ted Talks: Ray Stagles

ment it got first prize! This was followed by a new publisher Michael O’Brien, of the O’Brien Press, getting in touch and said he’d like to publish the guide.

Ted Creedon This interview with Ray Stagles, co-author of The Blasket Islands:next parish America, was broadcast on Radio Kerry in August, 2010 as part of the South by South West series. “My association with the island started back in 1940, during the war, when I was a student at London University. We were evacuated to Aberystwyth, in Wales, because of the war, as were the Celtic manuscripts from the British museum. The Keeper of the manuscripts was Dr Robin Flower and he gave a talk to our English Society about the Great Blasket that he visited first in 1910. His talk Photo: Ted Creedon was fascinating and that’s where it all began. But it was another 26 years before I actually managed to visit the island.

Unfortunately, Joan died in 1978, she was a diabetic and this was before I retired. Her ashes are scattered on the island. Fr Kissane, from Ballyferriter, was kind enough to have a service in Irish and English and many friends attended the service but most of them are dead now. I wasn’t sure if I would ever come back after that but I did and over the next few years, With a lot of help, I got a floor down in the old cowshed and a roof on and it’s a place to stay and it’s called Tigh Siobhán in Joan’s memory. After Joan’s death I gathered up more information and then in 1981 The Blasket Islands: next parish America was launched and has had four editions. I’m now working on a revised edition of the original guide to the island with Sue Redican and we hope the O’Brien Press will publish it next year”.

In 1966 my wife Joan and I were holidaying in Cloghane and we decided to visit the island so we drove to Dún Chaoin. Muiris Long brought us to the island by currach. It was the turning point of our lives. The following year we came to camp on the island for a week. Kruger Kavanagh, the unofficial ambassador of West Kerry, told me that I shouldn’t worry about safety and if there was any trouble there was a heap of wood, felt and tar on the Gob. He said all we had to do was light it and we would be rescued. So when we arrived on the island I checked and found that the fire materials were in place and so we were reassured. But on the fourth morning there was a strange light outside our tent. When I opened the flaps there was a thick mist all around. I didn’t say anything to Joan and after breakfast I went up to the Gob and the wood for the bonfire was dripping wet so it wasn’t an infallible system!. We came for two weeks the next year and there were people diving for the Armada wreck, the Santa Maria de la Rosa, in the Blasket Sound that year. Joan became very interested in the Irish language and the history of the island and she started learning Irish. She translated Peig into English for herself even before Bryan MacMahon’s translation was published. We came back year after year and we thought we’d like to have a place we could come to in the summers when we retired. The one place that was available and that we were able to acquire was a roofless cowshed above the village. We had a great friend in Walter McGrath of the Cork Examiner and in 1978 he told me there was a new category in the Listowel Writer’s Week festival on local guide books. At that time there was no guide to the island. Joan had done a lot of research on the island’s history so I put a guide together and entered it for Writer’s Week. To my astonish-

Dingle Notes.

Some litter was visible along Strand Street and Sráid Eoin and the judge recommended that action is taken to improve the Spa Road area and noted some closed off areas need attention by their owners. It was noted that utility boxes in some streets contained graffiti and needed cleaning and painting.

Richie Williams Review of 2016 Tidy Towns Judges Report Dingle was awarded 285 out of a possible 450 this year, an increase of 6 on the previous year’s report. An extra mark was awarded in 6 of the 8 categories in which the system is judged and the 2 categories not meriting an increase were wildlife/habitats/national amenities and approach roads/streets/lanes. Under community involvement and planning it was noted that we have a relatively small number of volunteers in relation to a town the size of Dingle. The long term plan provided by the local committee is not achievable without much more volunteer involvement. The judges were impressed with so many attractive shops and galleries freshly presented. The newly upgraded Carpark and sculptures at the pier were also noted. The Phoenix Cinema was admired as was the stone wall at the GAA pitch and the Coast Guard Station. The judges recommend immediate action to protect the Old Hospital Building and called on the H.S.E. to consider this very special building for the future generations of Dingle. Special compliments were paid to our carpenter Paudie Graham who has made timber flower tubs out of recycled pallets and well deserved indeed. The planters are of the highest quality and a credit to Paudie’s dedication to our Tidy Towns efforts. The Mall River provides great cover for bees and the judges recommend control of the knotweed at the rear of the cinema area near the river. The judges suggest that we develop a heritage/wildlife trail for children with such wonderful suitable terrain. It was also suggested that we introduce an App for visitors to engage with our area. The repair café was complimented as a great initiative as was the Food Festival Waste Workshop which should be better advertised and expanded when the opportunity arises.

The town park was admired but again litter was a problem despite the daily visit by our volunteers, however the judges urged us to continue to improve and maintain this fine amenity in such a convenient location right in the centre of town. Another area much admired by the judges was the Green Area at the rear of the charthouse where the flower beds were in full bloom on adjudication day. Of all the areas developed in the town by our volunteers this area is the most admired by locals and visitors alike. The work of the residents associations in the Marian Park, Cluain Ard, Cluain Coille, and Emlagh estates was noted with a recommendation to erect a stone wall with nameplate to the Emlagh estate. The introduction of ivy to bare walls in these estates would soften the harshness of the concrete blocks and provide nectar to attract bees etc. While admiring the Hospital roundabout the judges noted the unusual statues here and advise us to reduce the ever accommodating signage on the N86 approach road. Recommendations were also included in the report to improve the Milltown Roundabout Area and talk to proprietors of properties along Ashmount and Goat Street regarding painting and general tidiness and walls needing repair work, although this area was generally presented nicely. The Tidy Towns group are accepting it as a good report which notes work completed and also highlights areas needing attention. Hopefully more volunteers will turn out over the next 12 months and in the meantime we welcome suggestions and support with a view to making Dingle an even better place to visit and live in all year round. The full 2016 report is available to view on the Tidy Towns website (www.tidytowns.ie). Slán Tamall!

West Kerry Care of the Aged is a local charitable organisation involved in providing a range of services in the West Kerry area. We offer daily meals and a range of activities in our Day Care centre, Gairdin Mhuire on Green Street, with transport to the centre from a different locality each day. We offer laundry services to our clients as well as a number of accommodation options. Also as part of our organisation we own a charity shop on Goat Street. Along with HSE funding, all the proceeds from the sale of the goods donated to the charity shop goes directly to helping us fund the services we provide. The shop accepts clean saleable items such as clothing and bed linen. We also accept CD’s, DVD’s jewellery and household items. For Health and Safety reasons we cannot accept electrical goods, toys, baby equipment and furniture.

While we are grateful for the all the wonderful donations to the charity shop we are having a few ongoing issues with donations. Clean Clothing Shoes & Bags

Secondly, items are donated that we cannot sell such as soiled and damaged clothing, electrical goods and toys. While we can recycle clothing, other items have to be disposed of at a cost to the charity.

Clean Bedding

The opening hours of the shop are from 9.30am to 4.30pm (closed for lunch) Monday through Friday. The shop is run with the help the Community Employment scheme and the West Kerry Care of the Aged committee members. How to get a black belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate

being different from many other martial arts, is also a ‘gyo’- a teaching or discipline for self development of the mind as well as the body (a requirement for good self defence). It is also budo – simply that means it is not a sport where winning against others is the prime motivation. Winning in budo means to win out over ones own weaknesses and measuring one’s own progress by how one helps and treats others. These two considerations ensure that black belts in this art strive to be confident. courageous, self reliant, law abiding, responsible, respected and helpful people. It is a process that ensures that people who don’t feel the need for the whole teaching can not achieve a black belt. For further information please call Paidí 087-7735815 or follow us on Facebook at Shorinji Kempo Chorca Dhuibhne

Páidí Cazenove

Shorinji Kempo Chorca Dhuibhne has now two new black belts. Greg achieved his in June and Rioghán recently at a seminar in England. Greg joined the club four years ago and Rioghán as a junior at 7 years old. Since martial arts have been taught in Dingle only a dozen out of hundreds who have taken up the training have achieved black belt status. Most of these black belts were achieved in Shotokan karate but now we have two in Shorinji Kempo which actually is probably more difficult in many ways than Shotokan. Shorinji Kempo has a very wide curriculum that also involves grappling, weapons (sticks), pressure points, healing, meditation, and philosophy. Enough that an entire life time would not exhaust all the possibilities for learning which ensures we are never entirely expert and always maintain a humble beginners mind. To reach the level of black belt in any traditional martial art is not easy. It takes several years of commitment and perseverance during which the many physical and mental trials are tested. In Shorinji Kempo one has to accumulate knowledge and expertise in about 100 techniques, several forms involving attack and defence, a prearranged performance with a partner, free sparring in both ballistic and grappling techniques, and finally written and oral examinations of technical knowledge of the art including philosophy and pressure points. Needless to say only certain people are willing to undergo such a journeythough there is no secret talent or aptitude needed for Shorinji Kempo or any other skill in life for that matter; you simply get the result according to the work put in, bearing in mind that anything worth while learning is never easy. Depending on what age a person starts it can take anything from 4 to 10 years to get a black belt or shodan (1st Dan). Children can start at 6 years old upwards and continue through the junior grades of different coloured stripped belts. Yellow, Orange, Red, Green, Blue, Purple, Brown, and finally a junior level of a shodan with a stripped black belt. If a child starts at an older age then the possibility to skip some grades is available. During this period a child practices the basic techniques of kicking and punching, some simple sparring and break falls- rolling etc with the emphasis on enjoyment. With two grading examinations a year and having successfully achieved junior black belt, or reached an age of about 11 years old with or without any previous grade they can enter the senior class. The senior students study a different syllabus that also involves arm reverses, escapes, throws and pins that would be unsafe for the junior students. Of course those who attended the junior levels have a great advantage and study the senior syllabus without so much technical difficulty as some of the principles have been laid down previously. There are five grades to full black belt where the practitioners (kenshi) study and build up their knowledge of increasingly more difficult techniques. Having passed a grading examination for each level they wear plain belts of Yellow, Orange, Green, Blue, Brown, and Black. In addition to the physical examination for black belt the examinee is required to write on various aspects of technique and philosophy. The reason for this is that Shorinji Kempo, 20 West Kerry Live

Transition Corca Dhuibhne Some of our volunteers helping foodies choose the right bin In an effort to reduce the amount of waste generated by the recent food festival Transition Corca Dhuibhne ran the highly successful "Don't Be A Waster" initiative. Building on the work Kerry County Council does in supplying the taste trail with compostable plates and forks, the initiative encouraged food stalls to use compostable plates, bowls, cups and cutlery insted of conventional plastic. It also helped the public choose the right bin for their waste with volunteers manning separated waste bins at four different locations around the town and an information stand on Gray's Lane. There was a great response from festival goers who were delighted to see the initiative in place. Transition Corca Dhuibhne is grateful to all the people that engaged with the bins and all the volunteers that helped out over the weekend.

Nature’s Knowledge

Externally as an oil infusion Safety considerations: St. John’s Wort can potentiate other anti-depressant medications. Theoretically the herb can reduce the activity of other conventional medications, for example, oral contraceptives, antihistamines and chemotherapeutic medications. Use with caution during pregnancy as it is a mild uterine stimulant Can cause skin photosensitivity

Healing with Herbs : St John’s Wort

Deirdre Daly St. John’s Wort; Hypericum perforatum Parts Used; Aerial parts Family; Clusiaceae (Hypericaceae) St. John’s Wort gained a reputation some time ago as a specific for depression and a number of clinical trials have backed this up. St. John’s Wort is not for everyone but it is my experience and that of many other herbalists that the herb if taken for a period of time will help to alleviate mild to moderate depression gradually restoring the energies and spirits. There are however a number of cautions with this herb as it can potentiate the effects of other antidepressant medications and theoretically reduce the activity of other medications, for example, oral contraceptives. Its demise therefore as an off- the- shelf medication some years ago is understandable in light of these cautions. Fortunately herbalists once they have a comprehensive medical history of the person can prescribe St. John’s Wort for those suffering from, for example, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) anxiety, menopausal tensions and mild to moderate depression

Cautions: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted at, Nature’s Knowledge, Lower Main Street, Dingle, for advice, treatments and consultations. Email: daly.deirdre9@gmail.com Phone contact: 0872562109

St. John’s Wort is a sun herb and tradition has it that if picked on the eve of midsummer the power of the plant will help to keep evil forces at bay. The herb is in full bloom by midsummer and its affinity with the sun was traditionally expressed in terms of the plant’s power to dispel darkness and lift melancholia. The Latin name for the herb Hypericum perforatum comes from its constituent hypericin with the second half of the name pointing to the tiny holes or perforations in the leaf, which you can see when you lift the leaf to the sun. It is these perforations, which are actually the resinous oil glands of hypericin that help to distinguish St. John’s Wort from other hypericum species. St John’s Wort is not only a calming and restorative herb for the nervous system but is also an excellent herb for neuralgic pain easing the pain of sciatica and other rheumatic pains. Its analgesic and anti-viral actions will also help people with shingles and the herb can be taken both internally and externally for many ailments. Internally the herb can be used for deep coccyx and spinal pain and externally used as a rub for pain relief. When you infuse the bright yellow flowers in oil, the hypericin and other active compounds impart a deep red colour to the oil, which can be used topically as a lotion. To make the oil infusion put the flowering tops in a clear jar then pour a good base oil to cover the herb generously, close the lid and leave in a sunny place for up to a month. The oil will turn a red colour and can be used as an external rub for conditions such as, backache, sciatica and shingles. Appropriate essential oils can be added depending on the treatment. An example would be peppermint and lavender essential oils for sciatica and shingles and for muscular and rheumatic pain rosemary, ginger and marjoram can be added. St. John’s Wort oil is available to buy as a topical remedy and can be applied to all wounds where the flesh is rich in nerves such as the fingertips and soles of the feet. This herb’s reputation for depression tended to mask the plant’s other uses but this gentle herb along with its nervine action for treating all stress related conditions and depression is also an excellent herb for neuralgic pain, spinal pain, tissue repair and for viral conditions such as cold sores, shingles and chicken pox. St. John’s Wort is a wonderful restorative tonic both for the mind and for the body and deserves consideration for many reasons as outlined above and also simply because you’re wort it! Preparation; Tea infusions, therapeutically 2 tsps to each cup three times a day Tincture 5mls three times a day 24 West Kerry Live

Gardaí And Council Urge Kerry Road Users To ‘Be Safe And Be Seen’ During Winter MonthsThe Kerry Joint Policing Committee is

high visibility clothing at this time of the year when natural light is reduced. You cannot expect other road-users to see you if you are not visible to them – wearing a high-vis vest can make a life-saving difference. ‘We would also ask motorists to check their lights are working properly as driving with defective lights is both unacceptable and highly dangerous. A survey by the Road Safety Authority found that eight percent of vehicles had at least one defective light. The message is to get it fixed now for your benefit and the benefit of other road users,’ he said. Chairman of the Kerry Joint Policing Committee, Cllr Niall Kelleher said the aim of the ‘Be Safe and Be Seen’ campaign – which is run by An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority – is to reduce road deaths and accidents on the county’s roads.

At the launch of the Kerry Joint Policing Committee 'Be Safe, Be Safe' campaign were (left-right): Michelle Mullane, Road Safety Officer, Kerry County County Council; Brian Looney, Kerry County Council; John Breen, Director of Services, Kerry County Council; Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan; Cllr Niall Kelleher, Chairman, Kerry Joint Policing Committee; Cllr Pa Daly, Kerry Joint Policing Committee. calling on all road users in Kerry to exercise care over the winter months and to ‘Be Safe and Be Seen’ on the county’s roads. The Committee has encouraged the use of high visibility clothing and is asking all road users to ensure lights are fully functional on their bicycles, motorcycles and vehicles. Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

A change is coming that will lead to a widespread global adoption of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles in the next decade, and Ireland will be no exception. With any new worthwhile technology, the time comes when consumers make the switch, new technology is embraced and it no longer makes sense not to use it. Think the internet, smartphones, led light bulbs and you get the point. A similar switch is happening in the motor industry and it looks like the 2020s will be the decade of the hybrid and electric car. There is still the perception that the expense of hybrid and electric cars are beyond the range of the average driver, but this is not entirely true. The price of manufacturing, particularily the cost of battery prices, has come down considerably and that coupled with government incentives such as low taxes and grants and low running costs make them alot more affordable than you might think. Many global cities are switching their public transportation and service vehicles over to hybrid cars and buses in order to cut their carbon emissions and long term operational costs.

Pros of Hybrid and Electric Cars

Can reduce your transport fuel costs by 74% compared to a comparable diesel engine car. A reduction in price of up to €10,000 is available for electric vehicles due to an SEAI grant and zero VRT. Electricity from publicly accessible EV chargers is currently free so the cost of driving from one part of the country to another is reduced even further. There are currently over 1200 public charging points installed in Ireland by ESB around the towns and cities of Ireland. A fast charge station at a motorway takes approximately 20 minutes to charge a car to 80% capacity and this is currently free. Costing €120 per annum, EVs have the lowest rate of motor tax available in Ireland. An electric car can drive with zero emissions in our cities while making our lives quieter. Electricity from publicly accessible EV chargers is currently free so the cost of driving from one part of the country to another is reduced even

further. As EV and Hybrids grow in popularity thus too do their resale value.

Cons of Hybrid and Electric Cars

The three main concerns people cite when it comes to their reluctance to buy EVs come under: performance, range and cost. Performance wise, EV’s and Hybrid vehicles are matching their fuel counterparts. Range is still an issue for some people, but from 2018, it is expected that electric cars with a range of 400 km will be here, so that issue will disappear. Cost will remain an issue, until cost parity is reached somewhere between 2020 and 2025. In terms of running costs, the electric car is already far ahead of cars powered by the internal combustion engine. Many people charge their electric car overnight and, at night time rates, the cost works out to be between 10 and 15% of the cost of petrol. Even when people charge at the daytime rate for electricity, it works out to be about 25% of the cost of petrol. Supports There is a grant which takes €5,000 off the initial purchase price of the electric car, and VRT relief up to €5,000. The ESB provides free home charge point with the purchase of an EV as well, as well as free public charging (public) and a 24 hour backup call centre should problems arise. Infrastructure The infrastructure supporting electric cars is good, and one of the most advanced in Europe. There are 1,400 charge points between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. These have been set up by the ESB e car units on an all Ireland basis. With one electric car access card you can use any of the charger access points throughout the country. If there is an issue such as a cable gets blocked the system can unblock the cable. The ESB from the start decided to install a standard electric charge point in every town with 1,500 people or more. The ESB has a 24-hour call centre in Cork, and there are maintenance teams, response units if anyone breaks down. The charge points can all be operated remotely now – one card for all of Ireland – and in the near future the plan is to have an app that lets you know not just where the nearest charge points on, but whether it is currently in use.

Tips For Winter Driving

under trees and near high walls.

Taking a number of simple precautions can ensure safety on Irish roads during winter. There are a number of simple precautions the RSA advises for driving over the winter months:

Keep up to date. Listen to local weather and traffic reports. Pay heed to the weather warnings alerting drivers of unsafe and dangerous driving conditions.

In the event of a breakdown. Drivers need to ensure their vehicle is well in off the road so as not to obstruct other vehicles. The driver should also put on their hazard warning lights. If the vehicle breaks down on the motorway pull in as far as you can, alerting traffic behind you with hazard lights. The driver should leave their vehicle, get behind the barrier (on the embankment) and call the Gardaí, on their mobile phone or roadside telephone.

Check your tyres...they are your only contact with the road. Tyres should be at least the minimum legal thread depth of 1.6mm but need to be changed before they get this worn. Tyres need to be to the correct tyre pressure to give the motorist the best chance in extreme conditions.

Be prepared. During these winter months it is advised that motorists carry a number of essentials in the boot of their car. •

High visibility vest

Spare fuel

Appropriate footwear in case you need to leave your vehicle e.g. boots

A hazard warning triangle

Understand your brakes. Check your car manual and find out if your vehicle has safety assist technology such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC) or Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS). Learn how these technologies can assist your driving in harsh weather conditions.

Spare wheel (Check that your spare wheel is in good condition and is fully inflated. Some cars may have an inflation repair kit instead of a spare wheel. Make sure that you know how to use it.)

Tow Rope

Safe Distance. It takes longer to stop a car during the winter weather so slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front.

A shovel

De-icing equipment (for glass and door locks)

Make sure you can clearly see. All too often motorists do not de-fog or de-ice windows and mirrors which can compromise visibility. This winter ensure windows and mirrors are clear, and carry a de-icer and screen scraper. Do not use boiling water as this can crack the windscreen.

Spare bulbs

First aid kit

A fire extinguisher

A working torch

Beware of “Black Ice”. Black Ice is one of winter’s biggest hazards as it is difficult to see. Watch out for sheltered/ shaded areas on roads,

A car blanket, additional clothing & some food and water

Use your lights. As we come into the winter months, motorists are advised to use dipped head lights during the day so you are easily seen. Headlights and taillights should be in working order.

Sea bhí feabhas mór ar rath na gCiarraíoch i mbliana. Tugadh an onóir is mó do Antaine Ó Seaghdha, ó Ard na Caithne agus Roisín Dalby, ní Bhualaeír, ó Bhaile an Chaladh a bhuaidh an comórtas Agallamh Beirte fé dhá bhliain déag agus a roghnaíodh le bheith ar an dTeilifís mar bhuaiteoirí eisceadúla. Bhíodar tofa ar fad. Bhí cúigear agus daichead istigh ar an gcomórtas sin. Bhuaidh Róisín Dalby an comórtas scéalaíochhta fé 12 chomh maith agus bhí a deirfiúr Eibhín sa dara áit. Thug Tríona Ní Shúilleabháin agus Máirtín Ó Cathasaigh ó Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne an chéad áit sa chomórtas Luibíní 15-18 bliana. Bhí an lá le Sibéal Ní hÓgáin, Scoil Dhún Chaoin sa chéad áit i gComórtas Aithriseoireachta agus bhí a deartháir Ruarí sa dara áit. Is maith iad. Bhuaidh Bríd Ni Eibhín ón dTobar duais liteardha’, as a leabhar ‘Mná as an nGnath’. Bhí Ruaraí Ó hÉanacháin ó Scoil Naomh Eirc sa dara áit i gcomórtas amhránaíochta fé 9 mbliana. Tús maith a Ruaraí. Mar bharr ar sin bhuaidh Tomás ó Lúing ó Bhaile an Chaladh an príomh chomortas scéalaíochta do dhaoine fásta. Bhí an iomaíocht go láidir ach dhein Tomás an bheart go rábach. Bhí Louis Ó Maolchatha an dara áit sa chomórtas amhránaíochta, nárbh shean- nós é. N’fheadar cé méid uair atá an dara áit buaite ag Louis. Tiocfaidh a lá. D’fhéadfainn an rud céanna a rá fé Mháire Ní Chéilleachair ó Chorcaigh go bhfuil an dara áit fachta aici a trí nó ceathair bhabhta aici i gComórtas sinsir amhranaíochta Chorn uí Riada. Go deimhin bhí an chéad amhrán a chas Máire ar fheabhas. Blianta ó shoin ghnóthaigh sí an dara nó an triú ait i gcomórtas amhránaíochta i dtábhairne an Bhóthair. Chuir san misneach uirthi agus is mó amhrán casta aici ó shoin. Mo léir is triúr, bail ó Dia ortha ó Chonamara a fuair an chéad trí dhuais. Iontas eile ná fuair aon iomathóir ó Chonamara aon duais sa comórtaisí Rince ar an Sean Nós. Sin ceist eile.

Oireachtas na Gaeilge Ocáid na bliana do Mhuintir na nGaeltachtaí, agus an Saol Gaelach ná Oireachtas na Gaeilge. Is i gCill Airne a bhí sé arís i mbliana, an láthair is fearr a déarfadh beagnach gach aon duine leat. An phríomh chúis ghearáin a bhíonn acu siúd a freastalaíonn ar Oireachtais in áiteanna eile, go mbíonn na comortaisí scaipithe ar fuaid an bhaile nó na cathrach agus gur deacair teacht ar scata dos na comórtaisí. I gCill Airne nách bhfuil ró-oiriúnach do mhuintir Chuige Uladh, bíonn furmhór mhór an gcomórtaisí lonnaithe in Óstán Ghleann an Iolair agus Óstán an Brehon. Bhí dhá chomórtas istigh ar an mbaile ach b’shin a raibh. Dar liom go bhféadfaí gach comórtas a bheith ar an láthair chéanna. I gCill Airne tá seans agat bualadh le daoine na feacaís le tamall do bhlianta nó cáirde nua nó daoine a théann go dtí gach Oireachtas. Ba dheacair aon locht mhór a fháil ar chomórtas na bliana seo. Deineadh gearain bheaga fé mholtóírí mar shampla beirt ó réigiún amhain, poiliteoir agus daoine ag moltóireacht ar chomórtas ná raibh siad féin inúil sa chomórtas. Is minic gur fearr an fear ar an gclaí.

Bhí Noeli Ó Maoileoin agus Aodh Ó Dómhaill go diail ar fad, ach bhí an choimhlint an- ghéar sa chomórtas Agallamh Beirte na sinsear. Mheasas go mbeadh am chéad áit acu, ach bhíodar sa dara áit. Bhí Áine Ní Bhreisleáin Ó Ghaoth Dobhair agus Edel Luibhéad ón nDaingean sa dara áit i gComórtas sinsir na Lúíbíní agus bronnadh duais speisialta ortha as a bheith ina mbuathóirí don gcéad uair sa chórtas. Aughacasla National School Fashion Show 36 West Kerry Live

What a wonderful night of fashion and fun was had by all who attended the Aughacasla National School Fashion Show at The Rose Hotel, Tralee on Friday night. TV star and comedian Bernard O Shea co-presented the show with Rebekah Wall, Tralee Dress Designer and Milliner from Killelton, Camp. They were the perfect duo and while Rebekah gave a running commentary on all the garments modelled, Bernard’s natural quick witted comments had the audience in fits of laughter all through the evening and Bernard managed to put all the children from the school at ease too, who were all modelling on the night for the first time. And joining the professions on the catwalk modelling we had Thomas Ashe, Mike Fitzgerald, Mike Deane and Pierce Ferriter looking very elegant in their designer suits for all occasions. Hannah Herlihy and Eileen O Shea likewise cut a real dash on stage having huge rapore with the audience. Well done to all of them. Two Camp ladies came out tops in The Best Dressed competition. Castlegregory Celtic: Result: Castlegregory Celtic 2-1 Ballyhar Dynamos. After a really tough encounter, against a very different Ballyhar side from last season, Castle managed to take all 3 points to move onto 13 points after 5 games. Sunday’s game posed a different challenge to Castle who had started strong and had created a number of chances before they went behind against the run if play, their first time behind yet this season. But despite this Castle didn’t panic and kept creating chances with the outstanding Mícheál O’Dowd going close and a number of chances cleared off the Ballyhar line. However, despite the chances, Ballyhar stood firm to the break and went in 1-0 up. Shortly after the restart however Castle were right back in it when some excellent wing play saw Brandon Hoare break free into the box and his goal bound effort took a deflection to wrong foot the Ballyhar keeper and bring Castle level. From here the game continued in the same vein with Castle creating lots of chances and Ballyhar still dangerous the break. The match winning moment came with about 10 left when, after a succession of Castle corners, the ball broke free to Kevin Power whose acrobatic effort was going goal wards but again deflected in which gave the Ballyhar keeper no chance and saw Castle take a deserved lead. For the remaining minutes Castle shut up shop but Ballyhar created one last chance which was stopped by a superb Conor Boden block on the line to secure the 3 points. Overall a really gritty & balanced performance by the home side with some superb displays from Brandon Hoare, Patrick O’Donoghue & Micheál o Dowd. Team: Declan Owens, David O’ Brien, Conor Boden, Shane Kenny, Damien McMahon, Steve Speirs, Damien Finn, Enda Whelan, Brandon Hoare, Patrick O’ Donoghue & Micheál O’ Dowd. Citizens Information - Know your Rights A Free and Confidential Service Reserving a car registration number Question How do I reserve a particular registration number for a new 2017 car? Answer You can only apply to reserve a vehicle registration number on or after 1 November of the year before you intend to bring the vehicle into use. In other words, to use the number in 2017 you can only apply to reserve a number from 1 November 2016 until Revenue’s close of business at the end of 2017. An application received prior to 1 November 2016 will be returned un-processed. The number you reserve must be in the normal format and must correspond with the licensing authority area where you normally reside. It must also correspond with the year and half year in which the vehicle is to be first brought into use. For example, 172-D-111 may only be reserved by someone living in Dublin for a vehicle intended to be brought into use in the second half of 2017. The registered owner of the vehicle on which the registration number is to be displayed must be the person in whose name the number was reserved. All registration numbers are available for reservation, with the exception of the first number of each half year issued in the following cities Cork, Dublin, Limerick and Waterford. These numbers are, for example, 171-C-1,

172-C-1, 171-L-1, 172-L-1. They are reserved 21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1 for the Mayor or Lord Mayor of each of these cities and are not available for reservation by anyone else. A reserved registration number can only be assigned to a vehicle when it has been reached in the normal sequence. It may not be displayed on a vehicle before it has been formally assigned by Revenue, following the presentation and acceptance of a completed

Project4:Layout 1

declaration for registration. The fee to reserve a vehicle registration number is €1,000 and should be submitted with the application. The cheque, bank draft or postal order should be made payable to the Collector, Customs and Excise. You apply on Form VRT15A to the Office of the Revenue Commissioners, Registration Section, Central Vehicle Office, Rosslare Harbour, Co. Wexford.

What causes a bone spur? Eddie O’ Grady A bone spur (also called an osteophyte) is an outgrowth of bone occurring along the edge of a bone. Bone spurs are most commonly found in joints, where two bones come together. They also occur close to where muscles, ligaments, or tendons attached to bone. Some common parts of the body affected include the neck (cervical spine), shoulders, hips, hands and heel bone. Bone spurs typically occur because of continued stress or rubbing on a bone over a prolonged period of time. This can occur due to inflammatory conditions such as osteoarthritis , tendinitis or tenosynovitis. Normally there is a smooth layer of cartilage on the edges of bones where they come together to form a joint. With osteoarthritis this cartilage layer becomes worn away, causing the exposed bones to rub against each other. New bone forms in response to this stress and the resulting inflammation. Bone spurs usually develop in areas near tendons and ligaments due to chronic inflammation in these areas, from friction between these tissues and bone, or from overuse. This is the bodies way of trying to protect itself. Signs and Symptoms of a Bone Spur? Bone spurs may or may not cause symptoms. Symptoms are location dependent. If bone spurs rub against other bones at joints they can cause pain and/or more limited movement in these joints. Bone spurs can also be associated with pain, numbness, tenderness, and /or weakness in areas where they irritate adjacent tissue structures(muscles, ligaments, bones, nerves etc.). If the bone spur rubs against tendons or ligaments, they can sometimes cause a tear in these tissues over time. This is a common cause of tears in certain rotator cuff tendons . If bone spurs occur in the spine they can sometimes pinch the nerves (radiculopathy) or spinal cord(myelopathy). A radiculopathy can cause pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or legs depending on the area affected. With a myelopathy there can be pain and problems with balance along with weakness. How Do Health-Care Professionals Diagnose Bone Spurs? Generally X-Rays, MRIs or CT scans are used to confirm suspected bone spurs. Sometimes an experienced practitioner can feel the spur with their finger depending on the area(i.e. heel spur). When Is Surgery Appropriate for Bone Spurs? In some cases, if symptoms cannot be controlled with more conservative treatment, surgery could be an option. The goal is to remove the bone spur, allowing a return to normal joint motion, or to remove the pressure on muscles, tendons, ligaments, or nerves. Eddie O’ Grady Bsc. (hons.) M.I.A.P.T. West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald West Kerry Championship Final 2016 Dingle 0-18 to An Ghaeltacht 1-13 An Ghaeltacht were dethroned as West Kerry Champions by Dingle in a sun drenched Páirc an Ághasaigh last Sunday. Dingle were the much more efficient side and converted their possession into scores on the board to run out West Kerry Champions with a fulltime score, Dingle 0-18 to An Ghaeltacht 1-13. Dingle were three points to the good after 5 minutes of play, free kicks from Conor Geaney and Paul Geaney and a 45 from Mikey Geaney. Dara Ó Sé kicked a point from play for An Ghaeltacht and Dingle responded with a Tomás Sheehy point from play shortly after. Seán Mícheál Ó Conchúir converted a free kick for An Ghaeltacht just before the 15 minute mark to make it Dingle 0-4 to An Ghaeltacht 0-2. Mikey Geaney for Dingle and Éanna Ó Conchúir for An Ghaeltacht exchanged points before Conor Geaney set up Tomás Sheehy for his second point for Dingle. Barry O’Sullivan kicked a point from play for Dingle and Seán Mícheál Ó Conchúir kicked a point from play for An Ghaeltacht. Tom O’Sullivan with a point from play, Paul Geaney with a point from a free kick and Cathal Bambury with a point from play extended Dingle’s lead. Éanna Ó Conchúir for An Ghaeltacht and Barry O’Sullivan for Dingle exchanged points just before the half time whistle and when Referee Brendan Griffin blew for the break the scoreboard read Dingle 0-11 to An Ghaeltacht 0-5. An Ghaeltacht started the second half much better but failed to convert several attempts into much needed scores. Seán Mícheál Ó Conchúir with a pointed free and Dara Ó Sé with a point from play kept An Ghaeltacht in the game. Dingle responded with a couple of points from Paul Geaney free kicks and a point from play from Breandán Kelliher. Seán Mícheál Ó Conchúir kicked a point from a free kick for An Ghaeltacht and Tomás Sheehy with a point from play for Dingle meant that with 15 minutes gone in the second half the scoreboard read, Dingle 0-14 to An Ghaeltacht 0-8. Conor Geaney punched a ball over the bar after a great run for Dingle but An Ghaeltacht responded with a point from play from Éanna Ó Conchúir. Both teams exchanged scores again, Seán Mícheál Ó Conchúir

with a point from a free kick for An Ghaeltacht and Cathal Bambury with a point from play for Dingle. Seán Mícheál Ó Conchúir added to his tally for the day with another point from a free kick for An Ghaeltacht but this was cancelled out by a Conor Geaney point from play for Dingle. The games one and only goal came from a hopeful ball into the Dingle danger zone from Seán Mícheál Ó Conchúir and it was Éanna Ó Conchúir who jumped highest to fist the ball into the Dingle net to leave four points separating the teams close to full time. Two further points from free kicks by Seán Mícheál Ó Conchúir for An Ghaeltacht left only two between the sides but time ran out from an An Ghaeltacht comeback and when Referee Brendan Griffin blew the fulltime whistle the scoreboard read Dingle 0-18 to An Ghaeltacht 1-13. Cathaoirleach Bord Chiarraí Thiar Muiris Ó Fiannachta presented Corn Tomás Ághas to Dingle Joint Captains Breandán Kelliher and Mikey Geaney and the Dingle Cleaners Man of the Match award was presented to Barry O’Sullivan. One for the Boys! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

For some years now, November has been taken over by the Movember movement, a global organization raising awareness of health issues that are particularly pertinent to men. It is the time of year that men can lay down their razors to grow a moustache, all for a good cause. Movember cite prostate and testicular cancer, mental health issues and suicide prevention as their primary concerns. Funds raised are put into supporting independent research and development programmes for these issues and to increase awareness among the male population of risk, treatment and prevention of the same. With no chance of growing a moustache this month, I’ll do my bit and delve into the role of nutrition in prostate health. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer to affect men, after lung cancer. One in eight men in Ireland will develop prostate cancer during their lifetime. The prostate gland is part of the male reproductive system producing a fluid component of semen that nourishes sperm. As men age, the prostate may become enlarged in a condition called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a noncancerous condition. Prostate cancer also causes enlargement of the prostate. Both conditions share similar symptoms of frequent urge to urinate, difficulty when urinating and/or incomplete emptying of the bladder. While these conditions are quite rare in men under forty, they are increasing in those over 60 years. As with many cancers, the risk of incidence increases with age, not because the aging process is a risk factor but more likely that we are exposed to cancercausing factors over a longer period and our ability to naturally fend off risks may diminish with age through loss of vitality and health, poorer nutrition and less active lifestyles. Many cancers, including prostate may take years to manifest which is also reflected in the statistics relating to cancer risk and aging. While the statistics are alarming laid out in black and white, a colourful diet is a sure way to reduce your risk of prostate cancer and improve the outcomes and survival rates for those already diagnosed. Lycopene, a powerful antioxidant responsible for the red pigment of tomatoes, pink grapefruit and watermelon, is a crucial ingredient to reduce prostate cancer risk. It is thought that lycopene targets specific free radicals associated with DNA damage to prostate cells which can instigate the onset of prostate cancer. Tomato products such 44 West Kerry Live

as passata and bottled tomato juice are also a rich source of lycopene, offering us year round protection, even in the Winter.

Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Nutrition Clinic & Healing Rooms, Dingle 066 9151360. Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com

Pomegranate seeds also provide important antioxidants such as polyphenols, ellagic acid and anthocyanins. Like lycopene, these antioxidants protect the prostate cells from free radical damage caused by metabolic activity and environmental toxins. Anthocyanins may also reduce the risk of urinary and bladder infections associated with enlarged prostate. Pomegranate seeds have the added benefit of inhibiting oestrogen production, which is a possible cause of BPH in older men. Cruciferous vegetables, top the charts again when it comes to prostate cancer. Sulfuronane in these vegetables acts as a potent anticancer agent and is particularly beneficial in hormone sensitive prostate cancer. Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and kale can be easily incorporated into the diet – just don’t boil them to a mush! Steaming or simmering in a little water will help to ensure your prostate gets the best from these veggies. Soybeans, although controversial, are worth a mention. Populations with higher than average intakes of soybeans tend to have lower incidence of both prostate and oestrogen-sensitive breast cancer. This is attributed to phytoestrogens which offer protection from the harmful, growth promoting effects of oestrogen on these cancer cells. Other legumes and lentils also provide this kind of protection and fibre, which helps eliminate excess oestrogen from the body. These populations also enjoy a diet rich in fresh vegetables, very little meat and no dairy – all of which are relevant to both breast and prostate cancer. It is unclear if the protective nature of these diets is due to soybean intake but more likely due to a healthier approach to eating and the increased consumption of plant-based foods. A moderate intake of protein from fish, nuts and seeds will also provide healthy fats which reduce risk of prostate cancer. Monounsaturated oils from olives and avocado (rich in vitamin E) are protective while heated, treated oils such as corn, rapeseed and vegetable oils can increase risk. Fried foods, trans fats, red meat, sugar, dairy and high calcium intakes are also associated with increased risk of prostate cancer which may explain the rising rates among the Irish men! Selenium, Zinc, B vitamins and folate are needed daily for prostate protection. Although men need more of these nutrients than women, they will find plenty in brazil nuts, wholegrains, fish and pumpkin seeds. So, Men of West and Mid Kerry, enjoy the month of Movember! A fine apron will look great with those moustaches, the kitchen is officially yours!

Renowned for being a big-game player, he is one of only four players in Gaelic football history to score four goals or more in the All Ireland senior final stage.
