Beehive Theatre News On Saturday 25th May, at 8 p.m. Beehive Theatre, Dingle welcomes “B FOR BABY” by Carmel Winters, produced by Hy-Breasal Production Company. This funny and moving play was premiered at The Abbey Theatre in 2010 and was voted BEST PLAY at the Irish Times Theatre Awards 2011. Tickets are €12 and can be purchased in advance at Dingle Health Food Shop, Main Street, Dingle. Cork born Carmel Winters also wrote and directed the prize winning film “Float Like a Butterfly”. Congratulations to the playwright, cast and production team of “Stone of the Seasons” by Dylan Curtin whose Youth Theatre production, in association with Beehive Theatre Co., played for two successful nights as part of Féile na Bealtaine. Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 28th May will be the psychological thriller Greta. Directed by Neil Jordan. A sweet, naïve young woman trying to make it on her own in New York City doesn't think twice about returning the handbag she finds on the subway to its rightful owner. That owner is Greta , an eccentric French piano teacher with a love for classical music and an aching loneliness. The two become fast friends - but Greta's maternal charms begin to dissolve and grow increasingly disturbing as it becomes clear that nothing in Greta's life is what it seems. The following week on Tuesday 4th June the feature will be the musical drama Vox Lux. The film begins in 1999 when teenage Celeste survives a violent tragedy. After singing at a memorial service, she transforms into a burgeoning pop star with the help of her songwriter sister and talent manager (Jude Law). Her meteoric rise to fame dovetails with a personal and national loss of innocence, consequently elevating the young powerhouse to a new kind of celebrity: American icon, secular deity, global superstar. By 2017, adult Celeste (Natalie Portman) is mounting a comeback after a scandalous incident almost derailed her career. Touring in support of her sixth album, the indomitable, foul-mouthed pop savior must overcome her personal and familial struggles to navigate motherhood, madness and monolithic fame. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News Louis Murchan NATIONAL BIODIVERSITY WEEK This is a week which highlights biodiversity and recognises recent calls for urgent action protecting biodiversity. Agriculture has a significant role to play in this. GLAS (The Green Low-Carbon Agri-environment Scheme) supports approx. 50,000 farmers to carry out actions and measures which support farmland biodiversity such as the Farmland Bird, Low Input Permanent Pasture, Traditional Hay Meadow actions and Commonage Management Plans. DAFM’s European Innovation Partnerships (EIPs) programme, has seen Ireland lead the way in its development of the locally led approach, supporting farming communities from the bottom-up. A total of €59 million has been awarded to 23 projects including the Hen Harrier Project and the Pearl Mussel Project. On the 17th April Minister Creed launched an exhibition and booklet to highlight the innovative work being done by these locally led groups. DAFM has also taken a proactive approach to supporting a wide variety of biodiversity conservation projects including providing annual funding of €15,000 to the All-Ireland-Pollinator-Plan, €15,000 to the Butterfly Atlas run by the National Biodiversity Data Centre and €10,000 to Bird-Watch Ireland’s ‘Project Lapwing’ along with support for several LIFE projects. This week the Department will hold a series of events, to mark World Bee Day. The events will include an information seminar on protection of pollinators, displays of staff photos of pollinators and the publication of a newsletter from the DAFM Pollinator Network, highlighting the wide range of activities carried out by the Department to support bees and other pollinators. The National Biodiversity Conference: New Horizons for Nature, hosted by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, took place this February. DAFM made a strong contribution to the ‘Seeds for Nature’ charter with the following commitments: Agriculture commitments: Co-finance with NPWS the development of resources for the “Farming for Nature” project. Forestry commitments: Intensify the promotion and implementation of the Native Woodland Conservation Scheme, to increasing the uptake of the scheme five-fold during the lifetime of the current National Forestry Programme. Marine Commitments: Having 100% of the Irish trawling fleet participating in the Clean Oceans Initiative to collect marine waste and debris at sea and bring it ashore for disposal. Moving towards the next funding period DAFM will work with the other departments, scientists and NGO’s to ensure continued improvements for biodiversity policy and nature in our rich agricultural landscape. HOST A BEE-HIVE INITIATIVE As party of the celebrations of World Bee Day on 20 May, the “Host a hive, help the honey bee” initiative was announced. This aimed to encourage forest owners to introduce beehives to their native woodlands and is in partnership with Woodlands of Ireland and the national beekeeping associations. It is also supported by the Native Irish Honeybee Society. Native woodlands created and restored under the National Forestry Programme are not intensively managed thereby making them the ideal locations for hives. All owners of a woodland will be asked to if they are interested in hosting a hive or a number of hives. This scheme involves no effort, or cost, for the land owner as the beekeepers carry their own insurance, supply the hives and maintain them. Participation benefits the land-owner, by increased pollination in the woodland, and the potential to further develop local honey-producing enterprises similar to Wicklow’s ‘Nectar Way’ agri-food tourism initiative. These initiatives are the latest in a series of DAFM supports to aid and support bees and beekeepers. Under DAFM’s locallyled schemes, we are now investing €1.2m in a four-year pollinator project led by the National Biodiversity Centre. This will work directly with farmers to help them make their farms more pollinator friendly. We can all play our part in making Ireland a place where bees can survive and thrive and this ‘Host a Hive’ project is another excellent way to do so. Anyone interested in the idea of hosting a beehive can contact either FIBKA at www.irishbeekeeping.ie. Further information: Anne Marie O’Connor, 10 West Kerry Live

Promotions & Training, Forestry Division. 053 9170382 JAPAN REMOVES “UNDER 30 MONTHS” RESTRICTION Following negotiations with the Japanese authorities it was recently announced that he terms of the export health certificate for beef have been changed so that the previous age restriction of under 30 months has been removed and beef from cattle of all ages are now eligible for export. This follows on from a successful beef audit to Ireland by a team of inspectors from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in March 2019. It comes around three weeks before Minister Creed will lead the next agri-food Trade Mission to Japan between 10 and 12 June. This comes at a particularly opportune time shortly before the upcoming Trade Mission to Japan, and the recent good news from China in relation to the approval of Irish beef plants. Ireland exported €3.6 million worth of beef, with a volume of 840 tonnes, to Japan in 2018 according to the CSO trade statistics. The majority of this was in the form of bovine tongues, a delicacy in Japan, and other beef offal. As of the end of March 2019, around 200 tonnes had been exported. Overall Irish agri-food exports to Japan in 2018 reached around €115 million with pig meat followed by dairy accounting for the largest categories (pig meat: €41.3 million or 14,805 tonnes and dairy: €40.7 million or 12,169 tonnes) (CSO Trade statistics). CALL FOR PROPOSALS ON 2019 US-IRELAND AGRICULTURAL R & D PARTNERSHIP There has been a call for Research Proposals in selected agri-food areas under the US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership. The US-Ireland Research and Development Partnership has been instrumental in bringing together researchers from Ireland, North and South, and the United States in order to tackle shared challenges and provide scientific solutions to common problems in the agri-food sector. The programme offers a unique opportunity for researchers to develop new ideas and find new applications for their work by bringing together some of the most prominent scientists in their fields across the three jurisdictions. Working closely with others can help researchers develop new ideas, find new applications for their work, learn new techniques, and gain access to funding, expanding their professional opportunities. The 2019 US-Ireland R&D Partnership Call in Agriculture aims to advance knowledge in both fundamental and applied sciences important to agriculture, and support education and extension activities that deliver science-based knowledge to end users, allowing them to make informed, practical decisions. Stressing his on-going commitment to identifying strategically aligned transnational funding opportunities to help address national challenges and maximise research and innovation in the Irish agri-food sector, Minister Creed said “Collaboration has become the key to success in delivering solutions to real world problems and creating jobs and growth. Today’s announcement will further deepen Ireland’s involvement in selective, strategically important international agri-food research initiatives and my department is delighted to continue our support for this tri-jurisdictional alliance of ideas and goals”. The US-Ireland R&D Partnership is a product of the Northern Ireland Peace Process and involves the governments of the United States of America, Ireland and Northern Ireland working together for scientific progress by awarding grants for research on a competitive basis. The Partnership was launched in 2006 and to date 49 projects have been successfully funded under the partnership under a range of areas including health, ICT, energy and sustainability. The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) is the leading competitive grants program for agricultural sciences in the US. Since 2016 the scope of the Partnership has been extended to include agriculture on a pilot basis whereby researchers in eligible institutions in Ireland and Northern Ireland can link with a US-based researcher to submit research funding applications to annual Calls launched by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). DAFM funding of successful projects under the US-Ireland R&D Partnership Calls comes from the Department’s Agriculture (Stimulus) and Food (FIRM) competitive research funding programmes. The following six priority areas will be supported in the 2019 US-Ireland R&D Partnership Call in Agriculture: •

Pests and Beneficial Species in Agricultural Production Systems

Animal Nutrition, Growth, and Lactation

Welfare and Well-being of Agricultural Animals

Diseases of Agricultural Animals

Animal Breeding and Functional Annotation of Genomes

Mitigating Antimicrobial Resistance Across the Food Chain

€100 MILLION SUPPORT FUND FOR BEEF FARMERS ‘SECURED IN BRUSSELS’ A fund of €100 million aimed at supporting struggling beef farmers has been agreed upon by the European Commission, including a €50 million contribution from the Irish Government. The decision follows a recent submission from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to the commission seeking a significant, multi-million euro fund (specifically for beef farmers) in response to current market conditions. The move also follows weeks of farmer-led protests across the country on the issue of ongoing stagnant beef prices under a cloud of Brexit uncertainty. It is understood that the package was agreed between the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, and Fine Gael Ireland-South MEP election candidate, Andrew Doyle, during a meeting in Brussels this week. It is understood that full details on the package will be finalised over the coming days. The logic for this request and successful grant is the real danger of a “No-Deal” Brexit, and is aimed at the beef sector.

A Word in your Ear about Tinnitus Irene Ní Fhlannúra "It hath flown against me. It hath attacked me. O seven heavens, seven earths, seven winds, seven fires, by heaven be ye exorcised." If you suffered from Tinnitus in Mesopotamian times (4000BC-500BC), this chant would be whispered in your ear until the demon spirit was expelled or the patient faked recovery, favouring the illness over the cure! In ancient Egypt they used infused oil, frankincense, tree sap, herbs and soil and administered the mixture via a reed stalk that they put in the external ear. The Greco-Roman medicine folk were first to distinguish two types of tinnitus, one stemming from a cold (respiratory) and the other from the head (vascular) – either way, their cure was placing radish, cucumber juice, honey and vinegar in the ear and hoping for the best. In the Middle Ages, they continued with this pouring of things into the ear - a Welsh treatment recommended to take “a loaf of hot bread, divide it in two, and put it in each ear as hot as you could take it and thus perspire and by the help of God you would be cured”! These days, a cure for tinnitus remains elusive and treatment options are as varied as the people who suffer from it, but nutrition can play a positive role its management although it has more to do with eating the right food rather than sticking it in your ear! Tinnitus is the perception of noise, buzzing, hissing or ringing in the ears, coming from within the ear rather than an external source. Affecting around 20% of the population, tinnitus isn't a condition itself per se, rather it is a symptom of an underlying condition, such as age-related hearing loss, ear injury, wax build-up or cardiovascular system disorder. There is good information of risk factors – prolonged exposure to loud noises, stress, ear wax and blockages, smoking and the natural aging process. Medical conditions associated with tinnitus include high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, circulatory problems, anaemia, allergies, an underactive thyroid gland and diabetes. Conventional treatment is largely dependent on these risk factors and the management of underlying issues with medication. Nutrition is an overlooked option for many yet most of the associated health conditions are well managed through diet and lifestyle measures.

made foods, canned/powder soups, commercial bread products, many breakfast cereals and certain cheese are especially high in salt which is used as a preservative to increase shelf life. Sugar metabolism is a factor worth noting, particularly if you also have type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. The cochlea of the ear affected by tinnitus have a limited supply of nutrition, with only oxygen and glucose really making any impact to support proper function. Impaired sugar metabolism can directly affect the ear, as it can contribute to many of the conditions associated with tinnitus including diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Do not be tempted to substitute sugar with artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, even though it is marketed as a diabetic-friendly option. Aspartame and flavour-enhancer MSG are excitatory neurotransmitters. That is, they excite brain neurons and increase levels of electrical activity in the brain and the auditory cortex, the area where tinnitus is perceived. Studies have shown that people with tinnitus may have an elevated level of electrical activity and reducing this activity is helpful. Increasing electrical activity increases intensity and duration of tinnitus. A diet rich in saturated animal fats and trans fats have a detrimental effect on our vascular system, clogging up the blood vessels and inhibiting the smooth flow of blood and nutrients to organs including the ear. Similarly, elimination of toxins out of organs can be impeded by restricted blood flow to and from organs. Healthy fats such omega 3 from oily fish, nuts and seeds, maintains blood flow by keeping blood thinner and supporting the walls of blood vessels for optimal circulation. A Mediterranean-style diet is the most studied and appropriate diet for both cardiovascular health and tinnitus as it can help prevent many of their common risk factors. Eating foods that are close to their natural state, varied wholefoods, vegetables and fruits and simple, uncomplicated ingredients offer the best overall management for tinnitus and many of the conditions that are linked with it. For those unwilling to look to diet, I refer you back to the chanting and wish you luck! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic, Dingle 066 9151360. Excess consumption of sodium is directly linked to tinnitus. It restricts blood vessels, increases blood pressure, and significantly reduces blood flow to the cochlea in the ear. It is also involved in the maintenance of cellular fluid balance which can affect the ear as well as other areas in the body. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the kidney and ear are associated organs – not only are they similar in appearance, but also share common adversaries. A low-sodium diet involves using little or no salt in cooking, and never adding salt to your food at the table. Processed meats, ready-

Tomás Set For Triumphant Return This Saturday May 25th Tomás Mac an tSaoir from Baile an Fheirtéaraigh will arrive home from his epic African adventure. Back in November Tomás set out from Cairo on his bicycle having set himself the challenge of cycling to Cape Town in South Africa. Over the course of the next 6 months he pedalled his way through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopa, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and finally into South Africa; a journey of over 12,000kilometres! Tomás undertook the challenge to raise funds for the Donal Walsh Live Life Foundation. Now, having conquered the continent of Africa, he will get in the saddle for one final leg; the journey home. Tomás will leave from outside Tralee Green CBS at 1pm this Satuday and expects to arrive in Dingle at approximately 4.30pm where he will do a lap of the town, he will then continue around Slea Head and hopes to arrive in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh between 5.30 and 5.45. Any cyclists that would like to join Tomás along the way are welcome. There will be plenty of ceol and craic in Ballyferriter throughout the evening and into the night including a fireworks display.

FISHERMAN’S HOUSE DESTROYED

were under the influence of drink.

From – Kerry Evening Post, 16 February, 1850.

Edited By Ted Creedon SHIPWRECK AT INCH

The house of a poor fisherman named Ferris, from near Killorglin, was blown down during the severe gale of Tuesday night, and a child of his killed.

They were farmers and labourers, four being married and leaving families. Their names are – John Sayars, James Parker, John Griffin, Bartholomew Stack, Michael Sheehy, and two men named McCarthy.

From – Cork Examiner, 22 October, 1870.

ELECTION CELEBRATIONS IN DINGLE

The brig Emily of Shoreham [near Brighton], with wheat, from Queenstown, where she had put in for orders, to Sligo, is ashore on Inch Bar, at the bottom of Dingle Bay. She is likely, owing to the boisterous state of the weather to become a total wreck.

From – Cork Examiner, 22 February, 1865.

FALL FROM CLIFF From – Cork Examiner, 25 May, 1849. A man named Thomas Neligan on last Sunday was collecting seaweed on the rocks at Ballymore, Dingle, when he was borne off by a surge. Some of his neighbours say that he was robbing a seagull’s nest when he fell from the cliff. His remains were picked up [two days later] at Kinnard, a distance of seven miles from where the accident occurred. He has left a wife and two children to deplore his loss.

The return of The O’Donoghue for Tralee was received with rejoicing in Dingle. A large bonfire was lighted opposite the Temperance Hall and another at the quay. A large number of fishermen walked through the streets of the town holding lighted torches After the torchbearers came an immense number of people headed by a fife and drum band. The Temperance Hall was brilliantly illuminated as were the houses of Mr. Manniagen [?] and Messers, O’Donoghue, the latter of whom supplied the fuel for the bonfire in Main Street. [ Daniel O’Donoghue served in the British Parliament as MP for Tralee from 1865 to 1885]. SEVEN LIVES LOST IN TRALEE BAY

CASTLEMAINE HARBOUR TRAGEDY

From – Northern Whig, 17 October, 1894.

From – Belfast News-Letter, 29 Nov, 1909.

A sad disaster has occurred in Tralee Bay by which seven lives have been lost. On Sunday evening seven men living near Fenit left that place in a canvas canoe, and crossed to Camp, a village ten miles across the bay.[approx: four miles by sea].

On the morning of the 26th inst. Two farmers named John Neill and Michael Clifford were on their way to Dingle fair to buy cattle. They had to cross Castlemaine Harbour and they employed Timothy Teahan and his son James to convey them over by boat [to avoid the long journey by Milltown]. When about a mile and a half on their way a sudden squall struck the boat and capsized her. All four were thrown into the sea. Fortunately, they were observed from the shore by Mr. P .J. Kelly, Mr. Dan McEnery, Pat Kelly, William O’Neill and Dan Healy who put out in a boat and went to their rescue. They found Clifford and Timothy Teahan clinging to the upturned boat in an exhausted state, and brought them safely ashore. The others had disappeared. Later they found the body of John Neill floating on the water, but life was extinct. The two men who lost their lives, John Neill, 35 years, and James Teahan, 20 years, were unmarried.

They expected to return at midnight but on Monday morning the boat was found keel upwards and sail set ten miles west of Tralee and four from Camp. It appears they spent some hours drinking in Camp and left to return home at nine o’clock at night.

GREAT DESTRUCTION OF FOXES NEAR DINGLE From – Cork Examiner, 2 December, 1868. The present Lord Ventry has brought two gamekeepers from Scotland: and owing to the number of foxes they have already killed with traps, they have deservedly won for themselves the grateful thanks of all the farmers in this part of the country. West Kerry and the entire barony have been infested with these destructive animals. Within the last fortnight a huge fox was caught in one of their traps. He was so strong as to pull the stake out of the ground and the trap, with all the gear attached, through bogs and marshes for a long distance until he was at last killed by dogs. FLOODS IN KERRY From – Kerry Evening Post, 17 October, 1891. Owing to the heavy rain which fell during the past few days the rivers Maine and Laune overflowed their banks, and large tracts of land near Milltown and Castlemaine have been inundated in some places to a depth of four feet. At Milltown some sheep were drowned and two cows are reported to have been destroyed near Killorglin.

It was thought they had landed on one of the uninhabited islands, but the coastguard men visited all of them, finding no trace of the men. This evening all doubt as to their fate has been set at rest through the finding of two bodies which were washed ashore. They were all expert swimmers, but at least two

LITTLE GIRL KILLED From – Kerry Evening Post, 25 July, 1900. District Coroner Hayes, with a jury, held an inquest at Dingle into the circumstances attending the death of the three-year-old daughter of Joseph Hoare, of the village of Ballincota, who met her death in very shocking circumstances. She and some other children were seated on a fence playing, when a young man named Kevane, from a neighbouring village, was passing by guiding his horse and having a load of sand in the cart. When passing and unknown to him the deceased happened to fall from the fence, right before the wheel which rolled over the poor little one’s head causing instantaneous death. Great sympathy is felt for the parents in their sad bereavement. West Kerry Live 21

Dingle Whiskey Tasting

We cannot implore you all enough to get booking asap as this event will sell out in record time. This will be a very special evening indeed.

For our June tasting, IWS Dingle are both delighted & privileged to welcome back the Midleton Masters: Kevin O Gorman, Master of Maturation; Ger Buckley, 5th Generation Midleton Master Cooper; Dave McCabe of Midleton Academy and Ireland's legendary whiskey Icon, Ger Garland to the town. We also hope to have Irish Distillers/Midleton Master Distiller Brian Nation in attendance on the night.

NB. No cash accepted on the night. Book on line at www.irishwhiskeysociety.com under 'Events' When: 21 June, 7:00 PM - 10:00 PM Location: Dick Macks Brewhouse, 47 Green Street, Dingle Cost: Members €20 Non Members €30

We say privileged because it is only possible to get these legends together on just a very few occasions during the year and for us to be able to welcome them all back to Dingle after last year's extravaganza is extremely fortunate indeed. Each will explain just how Midleton make their precious whiskey and Ger Buckley will disassemble and assemble a cask for us, using the tools handed down to him by his predecessors. This created huge interest in Dick Macks yard last year and given that Ger may consider retirement over the next few years, this is a rare opportunity indeed for us to witness a cask deconstruction a second time. We will also get a unique opportunity to sample some whiskeys which we may never get to taste again. There will be some very cracking whiskeys to be imbibed which will be truly special and perhaps an idea of what Irish Distillers have coming down the line!!! Nobody who attended last years event will forget the excellent 31 year old grain whiskey which we devoured on the night. The evening will begin with the cask demonstration by Ger Buckley in the yard of Dick Macks and the tasting will take place after this in Dick Macks pub itself, with some food provided later. 24 West Kerry Live

Scéal Eile Ón Leabharlann Top 20 most borrowed books If you have ever wanted to know what books and authors attract the most readers in public libraries throughout the country then wait no longer and keep reading as details of the most borrowed books and authors from Irish public libraries during 2018 have been released by the Local Government Management Agency this week. The top twenty most borrowed books are all children’s books. The most borrowed title in 2018 was Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling. There are two other Harry Potter titles in the top five. The top twenty most borrowed titles are dominated by four authors. Along with Rowling, Roald Dahl has four titles in the top twenty, Jeff Kinney has five, and David Walliams has six. The only Irish title to crack the top twenty most borrowed books is Marita Conlon-McKenna’s Under the Hawthorn Tree, at number 20. R.J. Palacio is the only other author on the list, with Wonder. The top twenty highlights the enduring popularity of classic titles. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published in 1997. Roald Dahl’s highest ranked book, The B.F.G., was published in 1982 and Under the Hawthorn Tree was published in 1990. Not surprisingly, the most borrowed authors top twenty list is also dominated by children’s authors with prolific series authors leading the way. Roderick Hunt (Biff, Chip & Kipper) takes the top spot, Roger Hargreaves (Mr. Men), Daisy Meadows (Rainbow Magic), Francesca Simon (Horrid Henry) and Julia Donaldson are also in the top five. James Patterson, who takes sixth spot, is the only adult writer in the top twenty, although he also writes children and Young Adults series. In the top twenty most borrowed adult authors, John Boyne at number nine is the highest ranked Irish author, with Sheila O’Flanagan at number ten and Emma Hannigan at number eleven. The top three most borrowed adult books are all by Irish authors. Solar Bones by Mike McCormack which won the 2018 International Dublin Literary Award was the most borrowed adult fiction title. Holding by Graham Norton and Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent take second and third spots. Liz Nugent’s Skin Deep is in ninth place, making her the only author to have more than one title in the top twenty most borrowed adult books. Guinness World Records 2018 was the most borrowed non-fiction book, with Karl Henry's Healthy Living Handbook, The Driver Theory Test and Mindful Walking also making the top twenty most borrowed adult titles. Ná déan dearúd. Lig do scíth le Leabharlann Chiarraí

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís We were delighted to receive a silver finalist award at the recent Kerry Community Awards ceremony in Dromhall Hotel, Killarney. These awards recognise the work of the community groups who assist, support or enrich their community in some way, either socially or economically. The judging focuses on impact on the community and innovative approaches and it means a lot to be recognised for work that is so important to us. The Dingle Hub has established a Dingle Sustainable Energy Community (SEC) to help support the transition to a low carbon society of the future. The initial stage is a Dingle Peninsula Energy Master Plan and we are working closely with energy consultants who will carry out this work. Many thanks to all of you who took part in our energy usage survey recently and we are pleased to announce that the following commercial and domestic dwellings have been selected to partake in further site assessments which will aim at providing further solutions to increasing the energy efficiency in each property: CLG & Ionad Pobail Liospóil, The Alpine Guesthouse, Bunscoil an Chlochair, St James Church, Halla le Chéile, Cheryl Donahue, Muireann Nic Giolla Ruaidh and Ciarán Moriarty. sessions relating to the EU funded SKIN Horizon 2020 project and it quickly became clear that this project is an important opportunity for the Peninsula to benefit from significant expertise being made available to us to help coordinate and support the development of profitable businesses here. For the next two years, Teagasc researchers Áine and Aoife will work to help us to develop cooperative structures enabling efficiency for the economic growth of the production sector. There was no shortage of business ideas at the brainstorming session in Garrynadur last Friday evening and I would encourage anyone with ideas capturing the heritage, traditions and culture of West Kerry through food and the environment to become involved in the project to benefit from this coordinated approach. There will be another meeting in 3-4 weeks to progress ideas and build working groups to turn them into a reality. News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Golf at the Olympics

OPEN 10am to 6 pm

From talking to golfers generally, it seems that the inclusion of Golf in the Rio Olympics was ultimately a success despite some misgivings in advance of the event. Now that Rory Mc Ilroy has announced his intention to compete for a place on Ireland’s team for Tokyo next year, the subject is back in the headlines. Currently, based on the qualification rules, Ireland’s first choice selections would be Rory and Shane Lowry for the Men’s Team with Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow first choice for the Ladies. Imagine any of the four coming down the back nine in the final round in contention for a Gold Medal – our misgivings about the inclusion of Golf would quickly be put to one side and the ‘green jersey’ would be donned.

Chosen as one of the top independent bookshops in Ireland by the Irish Times

Kon'nichiwa Tōkyō! Get into Golf A very encouraging start to the Get into Golf programme for both Ladies and Men for this year. The Ladies first Taster Session was held in the Clubhouse due to inclement weather and a follow-up session was arranged for Monday 20th May with an excellent turnout on the night. The Mens’ Session on Friday 17th May had six enthusiasts playing a Scramble in the company of Captaen na bhFear, Ignatius and Rúnaí, Fionnán supported by the legendary teaching skills of Cormac Flannery. A few other enthusiasts were unable to attend on the night but will hopefully attend the second Mens’ session on Friday 24th. If there are others inspired by Brook Koepka’s achievements in the PGA last weekend or by Leona Maguire’s terrific win on the Symetra Tour, don’t worry if you missed the first sessions, we can accommodate you separately. We won’t guarantee that Cormac’s teaching will deliver the $1.98m won by Brooks Koepka, but we will guarantee you a great value experience on one of the most beautiful courses anywhere – don’t take my word, read what some of our Visitors say on TripAdvisor. And finally…. We should never forget the debt we owe to our predecessors in Ceann Sibéal and we must remain conscious of our responsibilities to maintain the club for the enjoyment of future generations, Warren Buffet’s quote is appropriate. “Someone sits in the shade today because someone planted a tree a hundred years ago”.

Literary nonsense is a type of fiction that often defies common sense and creates an entirely new world through the manipulation of language. Join us in looking at the works of some of the finest proponents of the genre — including Spike Milligan, Lewis Carroll, Edward Lear, Flann O'Brien, John Lennon and Jack Kerouac — and be a part of the biggest load of nonsense imaginable.

ONE-WOMAN PLAY: A DIFFERENT KETTLE

A comical musical story about finally achieving freedom from parenthood, and then losing it in Cork. What happens when your kids have left home, you’re in your midfifties, single, and fully aware of the potential out there for letting your hair down? For this multi-tasking individual, new problems arise, and she explores solutions live on stage, with lots of laughs, a smattering of klezmer, jazz, and other musical styles, plus plenty of soul.

DAD JOKES

Hidden behind Tom Sastry’s dry, sarcastic demeanour is an undeniable charm you can’t help but warm to. In 2015, six of his poems were selected for inclusion in the anthology “The Very Best of 52 nine ArchesPress.” Tom Denbigh’s writing holds a wicked mirror to the world and reflects on themes of modern mythology and queer identity.

YOUR MONEY MATTERS FINANCIAL ADVICE COLUMN Q&A

Cost Saving Energy Tips at home

Going on holiday? Spend wisely! Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Q. I’m planning my summer holiday abroad but I have a tight budget and need some advice on ways to save money. A. When you’re planning your summer holiday on a budget, there are some simple money saving tips to make your holiday money go further. Heating & Insulation: This takes up a huge proportion of our energy bills so conserving heat will save you money. Aim for 20°C in your living areas and 15Ǧ18°C in hallways and bedrooms. You can reduce

Car Hire - As with flights, shop around for your car hire and beware of unnecessary add-ons. Again check out www.skyscanner.ie for reliable car hire price comparisons. Be wary about extras and review everything you are being offered before you sign. Ask about their fuel policy and if you can you should opt for the full-to-full policy and this means you only pay for what you use. When it comes to car rental insurance you should consider taking out an annual policy with an Irish insurance company costing around €50 per year rather than buying collision damage waiver insurance from the car hire company. When you arrive, carry out a thorough inspection of the car and take pictures of everything on your phone or even make a video. Note any prior damage to the car on the rental agreement and get a staff member from the company to sign it. Bring your own SatNav or use your smartphone’s maps app as you will be charged steeply to rent a SatNav from the car hire company. ATM machines - Find out what your bank charges for overseas banking. If you’re travelling in the EU and withdrawing euros using your debit card you shouldn’t be charged anything extra than you would at home. Overseas handling fees do apply if you are travelling outside the EU and withdrawing non-euro currency. Shop around for the best exchange rate. Everyday money saving tips - Once you reach your destination, set yourself a daily spending limit on your overall budget. Try to stick to your budget and keep track of your spending. Take time to visit the local tourist office. They can provide you with maps, information and tips free of charge. Avoid eating in the busy tourist areas when eating out. Choose restaurants and shops that are popular with locals and where possible take public transport or walk rather than getting taxis. Be aware of roaming charges. Since June 2017 Irish holidaymakers within the EU can make calls and texts without incurring extra charges. Outside the EU you may incur extra charges. Think about switching off data roaming on your smart phone and try texting instead of phoning. Try to find the free WiFi zones. If you need to make a phone call, use your Hotspot in a free WiFi zone. Avoid streaming or downloading videos or music as these are the biggest data eaters.

Cromane Notes Jane Casey Cromane GAA KERRY MINORS: Best of luck to Kieran O’Sullivan and the Kerry minor team this Thursday evening (throw-in 7pm) when they take on Clare in the latest round of the Munster minor football championship round-robin system.Kieran made his Kerry debut a fortnight ago when he lined out at cornerback in a big 3-19 to 0-9 win against Cork in Pairc Ui Rinn. JUNIORS: County Junior League (round 1): Cromane 1-8, Currow 3-16 Cromane played Currow in the opening round of the County Junior Football League in Cromane last Friday evening. This game was actually an re-enactment of the first official game ever played at Cromane GAA pitch back in May 1987. On that day Currow B beat Cromane B 2-6 to 2-2. Cromane’s scorers that day were Terence McCarthy 1-1, Michael O’Shea 1-0, Michael Healy (RIP) 0-1. Currow won again on Friday evening in a much more convincing fashion. For us these games are about giving games to players who need them and to players who may have drifted in the past few months and years. To that end it was great to see some old faces back on the pitch in a Cromane jersey. These games are a great way of getting your fitness levels up, or maybe there are still some other players out there who are looking for an avenue back to playing? Well here’s a chance to get back up and running. The dates for the remaining county junior league games are as follows (all 7.30pm throw-ins): Friday, May 31 - Round 2: v Ballymacelligott Friday, June 21 - Round 3: v Listry Friday, July 5 - Round 4: v St. Michael’s/Foilmore Friday, July 19 - Round 5: v Firies Team: Paudie McMahon; Gary Griffin, Jack O’Sullivan, Eamon O’Connor; Dylan Falvey, Cathal Crosby, Patrick Moroney; Danny Shea, Finbar Casey; Brice Dourieu, Aidan O’Sullivan, Shane Ahern; Cian O’Keeffe, Sean Teahan, Ian Costello. Subs: Mikey O’Sullivan, Alex Mansell, Colin O’Sullivan. UNDER-12s: Our under-12s begin phase two of the county league this weekend. They will have games against Beale (in Ballybunion next Sunday), Gneeveguilla (June 2), Foilmore (June 16), and Dingle (June 23) over the next six weeks. There is also a game against Kerins O'Rahillys that needs to be refixed, it was due to be played last Sunday but had to be postponed. Every game is currently fixed for Sunday with the provisional start time of 6pm. One element of phase two in the Under-12 county league is the introduction of the ‘Silent Sideline’ initiative by the Kerry Coiste na nOg board. This initiative encourages positivity and asks that the crowd refrain from singling out players. There will be one lead coach on each side who will be allowed to interact with the players. The idea is to simply let the players play. There will also be signs held aloft during each half to urge the watching crowd to remain quiet during the play. Scores and fine play, of course, can be applauded but the aim is to generally have the players play in quietness. Best of luck to the team. MID KERRY GO GAMES: A series of Go Games blitzes for under-8s and under-10s will take place around Mid Kerry for the next few months. All blitzes are provisionally due to start at 6.30pm. The next under-10 blitz is in Cromane on Monday, May 27, with others following on every second Monday in Milltown (June 10th) and Beaufort (June 24th). The under-8 blitzes began last Monday (May 20th), in Keel and again will continue every second Monday with events in Glenbeigh (June 3rd); Killorglin (June 17th), and finally at Cromane on July 1st. Best of luck to all the young players taking part in these blitzes over the coming weeks.

UNDERAGE TRAINING: Our Sunday morning underage training is up and running now. Training begins at 11.15am each Sunday. Many thanks to all of our club members who continue to volunteer their time to help our young players each Sunday morning. FIXTURES: Sunday, May 26 - County League Division 5 Group B (round 4): Cromane v Rathmore B in Rathmore at 2pm (provisional time and date). Sunday, May 26 - Under-12 County League Phase 2 Division 7 (round 2): Cromane v Beale in Ballybunion at 6pm (provisional time). Monday, May 27 - Under-10 Mid Kerry Go Games blitz in Cromane at 6.30pm. Friday, May 31 - County Junior Football League Group 4 (round 2): Cromane v Ballymac in Ballymac at 7.30pm. Sunday, June 2 - Under-12 County League Phase 2 Division 7 (round 3): Cromane v Gneeveguilla in Cromane at 6pm (provisional time). Movie Review Avengers: Endgame Pierce Hoare Avengers: Endgame, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, is the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While not without flaws, I felt the movie was exactly what it needed to be, giving enough action, comedy and jaw dropping moments to be a perfect end on the series of films (even though I doubt this will be the last Marvel film for another while). There are far too many actors in the film to count, but some include Robert Downey Jr, Josh Brolin, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, Scarlett Johansson, and many more who do a fantastic job in their respective roles. The special effects in the film are just as good as they were in Infinity War, if not better and the cinematography is amazing, especially in one scene regarding Captain America. The film has, at the time of writing this, passed Titanic as the second highest grossing film of all time and has it’s eyes out to take Avatar’s decade long hold of highest grossing film. I can’t say much more without giving the key scenes of the film away, but strongly recommend seeing Avengers: Endgame, just make sure you’ve caught up on the other 11 years worth of Marvel films before you do. Pierce Hoare is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne

Nursing home contract of care Question I have chosen a nursing home to live in and have been asked to sign a contract. I’m not sure what to look out for. What should be included in the contract? Answer When you decide on a nursing home, you are asked to sign a contract of care. This sets out the rights and responsibilities for you and for the nursing home. It is important that you understand it before you sign it. If the contract refers to other documents, you must be given those documents at the same time. A nursing home must use simple and language that you can understand in its contract of care. It should not have unexplained legal jargon. The contract should include: •

Details of the specific services that the nursing home will provide

Details of how much you will pay for the services, and how this will be paid

All details of additional charges and fees

Any specific policies around visitors or your absences from the nursing home

The circumstances under which you might be asked to leave

• The circumstances under which changes to the contract will apply and how those changes will be agreed • Details on the circumstances in which the nursing home can cancel your contract of care, which must be limited and specific The contract should not include terms that allow the nursing home to change the contract without your agreement after you have signed it. It should not allow the nursing home to have an unlimited right to increase or add fees after the initial costs are agreed with you. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission website, ccpc.ie, has more information about what you are entitled to expect in a nursing home contract for care. It includes information about what you can do if you think that a contract for care is unfair.

IPBES & Ireland’s Biodiversity Crisis The Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service (IPBES) has published its global assessment on the state of the world’s biodiversity and ecosystem services. In a personal comment piece Dr. Liam Lysaght, Director of the National Biodiversity Data Centre, reflects on how this relates specifically to Ireland. The report shows that nature is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history — and the rate of species extinctions is accelerating, with grave impacts on people around the world now likely. The health of ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever. We are eroding the very foundations of our and future generation’s economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life worldwide. And the link to sustainable development is clear. Current negative trends in biodiversity and ecosystems are undermining progress towards 80% of the assessed targets of the Sustainable Development Goals, related to poverty, hunger, health, water, cities, climate, oceans and land. Loss of biodiversity is shown to be not only an environmental issue, but also a developmental, economic, security, social and moral issue as well. The Report also stresses that it is not too late to make a difference, but only if we start now at every level from local to global. The report concludes that “Through transformative change, nature can still be conserved, restored and used sustainably – this is also key to meeting most other global goals. By transformative change, the report means a fundamental, system-wide reorganization across technological, economic and social factors, including paradigms, goals and values.” The assessment was compiled by 145 expert authors from 50 countries over the past three years, with inputs from another 310 contributing authors. It is based on the systematic review of about 15,000 scientific and government sources so it has credibility. The findings need to be listened to and, more importantly, acted upon, and acted upon quickly. What relevance does this have for Ireland? The key point is that Ireland is not immune from the trends reported on in the Global Assessment; Ireland is facing exactly the same biodiversity crisis. To echo the words of Robert Watson, Chair of IPBES “We have lost time. We must act now” First the bad news Around 31,000 species are known to occur in Ireland, yet the conservation status of only about 10% has been assessed. This means we have a fundamental knowledge gap in how biodiversity is changing in Ireland. But what we do know is: •

Of the species that have been assessed, one in every fifth species is threatened with extinction here.

One in every third species of bee is threatened with extinction.

The conservation status of one third of our habitats afforded legal protection under the EU Habitats Directive dis-improved between 2007 and 2013.

37 species of bird are of high conservation concern, including species such as curlew, hen harrier, twite and yellowhammer. The corn bunting has become extinct since around 2000 and the once widespread corncrake is just lingering on in the western extremities of counties Donegal and Mayo.

Three of our iconic fish, the Atlantic salmon, European eel and angel shark have suffered catastrophic population declines, and the freshwater pearl mussel, Ireland’s longest living animal, is facing extinction.

Our native white-clawed crayfish is threatened with the recent arrival of the crayfish plague.

Everyone who have worked or walked in the countryside over the last 30 or 40 years will attest to a huge reduction in the biomass of insect life. Our fields have fallen silent; now hedgerows and patches of scrub are under attack like never before.

Innovations Partnership evidence-based projects to test and demonstrate how farming can be of benefit to biodiversity. The recent National Biodiversity Conference showed there is a strong and vibrant professional biodiversity community that has the expertise and ambition to really influence a more biodiversity-friendly, sustainable future for Ireland. The ground breaking All-Ireland Pollinator Plan has flipped biodiversity conservation from being seen as something negative to being seen as something that can be achieved with positive solutions-based approaches. Now communities, businesses and local authorities across the island of Ireland are engaged in proactively managing land for pollinators (and biodiversity) and more importantly perhaps, signalling a new dawn on how we approach nature conservation in Ireland. There is a notable shift among the general public to a greater appreciation of biodiversity. For example, a survey of people’s attitudes last year revealed that 88% felt that not enough was being done to protect Ireland’s bees. The National Biodiversity Data Centre has this spring seen a 100% increase in the number of people who are observing nature and submitting sightings to the Data Centre. There is more and more engagement with farmers who want to do more to help protect biodiversity on their farms. Citizen-science is now becoming a mainstream activity, where citizens actively engage in collecting high quality data to answer real scientific questions. There are more and more community-led initiatives that are proactively managing local habitats as a community resource, often supported by state agencies. And what now? No matter where one stands on the spectrum of how well or how poorly you think Ireland is doing on the conservation of biological diversity, the key message of the IPBES report is that enough is not being done, and that we now have the added problem of time not being on our side. Ireland is in the middle of a biodiversity crisis, which is not an esoteric concern rather an existential crisis. The biodiversity crisis needs to be taken seriously and the conditions must be created where we can have an honest, evidence-based discussion around how to address this crisis. As someone who sometimes speaks out on the worst excesses of biodiversity damage I see in my travels, it always surprises me how often I am confronted simply for speaking out; it is a classic case of shooting the messenger rather than address the message. This is particularly the case in relation to agriculture and forestry. Any public comment which seeks to address the role that agricultural or forestry production systems and practices play in biodiversity declines is met with huge hostility; even to raise it is almost treated as being in some way unpatriotic. This attitude must end and Government has to take the lead in changing that attitude. Because the irrefutable fact is biodiversity loss cannot be adequately addressed without finding ways for agriculture and farmland to make space for biodiversity. I still believe the best way to do this is for all farms in receipt of CAP payments and other subsidies to be obliged to have a minimum of 20 per cent of their land area actively promoting biodiversity enhancement measures. And farmers themselves should have the discretion as how best to deliver this on their land, supported by empirical evidence that the measures are indeed delivering biodiversity benefits.

Now the good news Despite the overall negative trends, there are some positive developments that should give us hope. Here are just a few, but there are many, many more local-level initiatives that go a largely unnoticed. The overall status of species afforded protection under the Habitats Directive has shown a positive change. Six are improving and 80% are now stable, so the worst declines of these species have been halted. There are now special agri-environment schemes targeting the conservation of hen harrier, curlew and freshwater pearl mussel, and new innovative European

Lamb Koftas, Mint Yogurt in Pitta Bread Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This is the dish I got to cook on the Maura and Daithí show last week, since then a few people have asked for the recipe.

1 egg small bunch of flat leaf parsley finely chopped small bunch of mint leaves finely chopped salt and pepper ½ lemon juiced For the Yogurt

To serve

Place a pan on over medium to high heat, once hot add a little oil then add the lamb koftas to the pan, try not to over crowd the pan. Cook them for about 5-8 minutes depending on the size of them. Make sure they are cooked through but don’t leave them on the pan to cook as they will dry out.

1 Pitta Bread per person

For the mint yogurt

Some pickled red onion

In a bowl mix the garlic, mint, yogurt and lemon juice, add a little slat if needed.

handful of mint leaves chopped finely 200ml natural yogurt ½ lemon juiced

Try them, you won’t be disappointed.

Handful of salad leaves

Serves 4

Method

Ingredients

For the koftas

For the Lamb Koftas

Add a little oil to a pan over medium heat, then add the onions and pinch of salt. Let this cook for about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for a further 3 minutes. Place this a bowl and add in the spices. Once this has cooled add this to the lamb mince along with an egg. Add the chopped herbs, salt, pepper and lemon juice, mix this really well. To check if the seasoning is to your liking, place a pan on over medium to high heat, add a little oil then add a small bit of the mixture. Cook it for about 5

1 onion finely diced 1 clove of garlic crushed 2 tsp. cumin toasted and ground 1 tsp. chili flakes ½ tsp. nutmeg grated

Take some of the mixture and roll it into a small oval shaped ball and place this on a tray. Repeat until all of the mixture is gone. If you have time cover the tray with cling film and leave in the fridge overnight. To cook

1 garlic crushed

Put simply lamb koftas are meatballs with lamb mince, some spices and plenty of mint, parsley and lemon to really give it some freshness, they can be served on a flatbread or in a pitta. In my opinion, the pittas from Bácús are delicious and are perfect for this.

500g lamb mince

minutes. Taste it, and adjust the seasoning to the mixture if needed.

Place the flatbread in an oven at 180º C for about five minutes before serving. To serve Add some salad leaves to the warm flat bread, then some pickled onion, some lamb koftas and then generously drizzle some mint yogurt over, you can serve it as it is or roll it up to form a kebab. A Broad Church :The Provisional IRA in the Republic of Ireland 1969-1980 le GearĂłid Ă“ FaoleĂĄn foilsithe ag Merrion Press ‘This groundbreaking book is the first to detail, with startling new revelations, just how integral the Republic of Ireland was to the Provisional IRA’s campaign at every level. The sheer level of sympathy and support that existed for militant republicanism in southern Irish society demonstrates that the longevity of the ‘Troubles’ was due in large part to this widespread tolerance and aid. No Irish political party was without members who aided the Provisional IRA in the early years of their campaign, as former IRA volunteers attest to in interviews and previously unpublished accounts of training camps in the Republic. Juried courts for IRA suspects were phased out as both juries and judges were regularly acquitting republicans in cases of blatant IRA activity, and juries often celebrated with or congratulated the defendants: in discussion with the British government Taoiseach Jack Lynch even named judges who were deemed overly sympathetic to the IRA. The extent of activity, training, financing, armed robberies, demonstrations and goodwill for the IRA in the Irish Republic is rarely if ever acknowledged in Irish mainstream media or the education curriculum. A Broad Church: The Provisional IRA in the Republic of Ireland, 1969-1980 will dramatically change that view forever.’ - Merrion Press An CafĂŠ Liteartha, BĂłthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean UĂ ChĂşis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin Ăł 1979
