Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.45pm

The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 30th May will be the psychological thriller “Elle”. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the film focuses on Michèle a seemingly indestructible businesswoman. The head of a successful video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes her life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game of cat and mouse-a game that may, at any moment, spiral out of control. The following week on Tuesday 6th June the feature will be “Handsome Devil”. This acclaimed Irish movie from director John Butler is set in a Dublin Rugby school where Ned, the bullied outsider, and Conor, a new boy and star athlete, are forced to room together. Conor is drafted into the senior rugby team, whose actions dominate school life and whose privilege and entitlement have made Ned’s life to date at the school a misery. The boys take an instant and visceral dislike to each other seem destined to remain enemies until an English teacher, Mr. Sherry, begins to drill into them the value of finding one’s own voice. This lesson isn’t appreciated by everyone though, not least the rugby coach who has his own agenda, and who harbors some deep suspicions about Sherry. 4 West Kerry Live

Naturalist Bernie Goggin will lead a free nature walk to Beenbawn Head, Dingle on Sunday 28th May. It will provide a great introduction to the beautiful cliff flora of this stunning headland so little known outside of Dingle. Together you will see oceanic seabirds like the Fulmar which can’t stand on it’s legs sharing a breeding cliff with the landlocked and delightful chough. The ancient rocks of Old Red Sandstone formed when North America and Western Europe were united and now the remnants of mountains as high as the Himalayas make the bones of this great site. To get there turn off at the signpost about a mile east of Dingle and less than a mile down is the carpark for Beenbawn Beach. Meeting at 2pm on Sunday the 28nd May. BLACK C=0 M=0 Y=0 K = 100

Farming News

Louis Murchan

87% of Farmers apply online for annual €1.2 Billion Payment Scheme The Department of Agriculture recently confirmed that Irish farmers have made a significant shift to the online method of applying for the annual Basic Payment Scheme. 87% of farmers availed of the online option for the 2017 scheme, a number which far exceeds the EU target of 75% for this period. 13,000 extra farmers made the move online making it a total of 113,600 online applications which puts Ireland well on track to meeting the 100% online target for 2018. Under EU Regulations, Member States are required to move to 100% online applications by 2018. The Department has put in place a range of supports in order to encourage farmers to apply online for their BPS. For example, officials from DAFM have been in a number of locations around the country in recent weeks meeting directly with farmers on a one to one basis and helping them through the online BPS application process. The feedback received from farmers using this service has been very positive. In advance of the EU requirement that 100% of applications are online in 2018, the Department will continue to work with farmers, farm bodies, and agricultural advisors to ensure that the continued roll out of online BPS application will deliver real benefits for farmers in a way that ensures that access to this vital support is not impeded. If any one has yet failed to lodge their application with the Department, they should do so now, as an application more than 25 days late will result in 100% loss of payment. Department Investigating All Of The Recent Incidents Of Illegal Burning Of Land Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Andrew Doyle, T.D., also recently provided an update on the issue of the recent illegal burning on agricultural and forestry land that has led to the outbreak of serious fires in various counties throughout the country. This update follows his visit to the site of the recent gorse fires in Cloosh Valley in Galway. Recent extensive wildfires throughout the country have caused significant damage to substantial areas of agricultural and forestry land. Department officials and inspectors are currently analysing a wide range of satellite imagery to identify land which was burnt illegally during the specified closed season for burning. Historic satellite imagery is also being examined as part of this process. Agricultural and eligible forestry land identified as burnt illegally as part of this investigation will be deemed ineligible for payment under the 2017 Basic Payment and other areabased schemes. Farmers are advised, as are their advisors of the following in relation to agricultural and eligible forestry land which is burnt illegally during the closed season – i.e. 1st March to 31st August.: Such land is not eligible for payment under the Basic Payment Scheme and other area-based schemes; Farmers who have included illegally burnt land in their 2017 Basic Payment Scheme application, already submitted to the Department, should now remove this land by means of submitting an Amendment Form prior to the closing date for receipt of amendments, i.e. 31 May or 9 June with penalty; Where it is identified, as part of the current investigation, that lands were burnt during the closed season this may result in such land being inspected by Department officials. The Department is actively investigating all of the recent incidents of illegal burning of land using the most up-to-date technology/satellite imagery. It will not tolerate incidences of illegal burning of land and will take all necessary actions to ensure compliance with the conditions of the various EU funded area-based schemes, including reducing payments and penalties where applicable. Coping with Stress Farming is unlike any other job on earth were you are working more hours than everyone else and get less pay. Farming is more than just a job it’s a way of life and tradition that has being handed down from generation to generation. A farmer recently quoted as saying that you wouldn’t wish farming on your worst enemy at the moment. This sums up how things are at the moment in the farming world and it is very hard not to get down 10 West Kerry Live

and stressed by all the negatives that are coming at farmers. There are many things you can do to help yourself, from changing the way you look after yourself - your diet, exercise, leisure and sleep patterns - to changing the way you think about yourself, your relationships and the farm. Talk about it. Talk to a trusted friend, family member or neighbour. Make an appointment to see your GP. Expressing what you are going through can be very therapeutic, even if there is nothing you can do to alter the stressful situation. Manage your time better. Poor time management can cause a lot of stress. When you are stretched too thin and running behind, it’s hard to stay calm and focused. But if you plan ahead and make sure you do not overextend yourself, you can reduce the amount of stress you are under. Set realistic goals. Be selective and use your energy to do the most important and achievable tasks. Set realistic goals and do not blame yourself if you do not reach all of them, there is always next time. Focus on the positive. When stress is getting you down, take a moment to reflect on all the things you appreciate in your life, including your own positive qualities. This simple strategy can help you keep things in perspective. Eat well. Eat a variety of fresh foods in a balanced diet. Some foods actually cause increased tension, for example, coffee, tea, chocolate, alcohol and soft drinks. These are often the foods we crave when we are stressed so be aware and try to limit your intake of them Exercise regularly. Physical activity plays a key role in reducing and preventing the effects of stress. Make time for exercise and find something you enjoy: sport, swimming, walking, dancing or cycling. Make time for relaxation. Even stopping for ten minutes a day to breathe slowly and deeply can help. Spend time on your own - reading, walking, or listening to music. Finally, it is essential that everyone takes time out, and puts a bit of fun into their life. There are some excellent places to start looking on line for help with your mental health if you feel that you want to improve it and make it more stronger or if you don’t feel happy and can’t understand why and you want to stop feeling like that check out the following websites to make a start There are also some great organisations out there like GROW and AWARE were you can attend meetings on a weekly basis and they are all free of charge. if you feel really bad then you should contact the Samaritans as they are always there to listen and help. Telephone 116123. Wild Bird Cover Wild Bird Cover is an area-based option under GLAS I, II & III that needs to be addressed immediately. Those who selected this option are required to have the cover crop sown by 31st May, or NEXT Wednesday, which happens to be both Clint Eastwood’s and my birthday! The Standard crop is a mix of Oats/Barley at a rate of 75 kg per hectare, and Mustard/Linseed at 15 kg per Ha. This is available locally from your agri-supplier, and you will be accommodated, if you haven’t yet ordered the seed. With a GLAS payment rate of €900 per ha, this is an important and lucrative GLAS action, so don’t be flippant about it. GLAS inspections are on-going by the Department, and you will not have a “leg to stand on”, should you be discovered to have not fulfilled your obligation. As a continuation from the last news item, failure to carry-out this option will cause considerable stress, and there will be little or nothing that can be done by your advisor, to solve this problem. Remember to burn off previous or existing vegetation with Round-Up, prior to sowing. This is an ideal weed-killer, as like the AK-47, it kills absolutely everything in the field. The crop can be top-seeded, but this runs the risk of creating a feed supply for birds. If you use this method, you should roll and/or harrow the field afterwards. sorption of iron. The collagen that surrounds the hair also relies on vitamin C so ensure you are getting plenty of fresh, raw fruits and vegetables all year round. Zinc and Silica are two more minerals important to hair health. While they can be supplemented, food sources of silica include cucumber, nettles, mango, green leaves, beans, celery and asparagus. Silica is also found in horsetail herb which is often used, like nettles, in a hair rinse for weak, brittle hair. Among some of the foods high in zinc are pumpkin seeds, fresh oysters, brazil nuts, eggs and pecans. Vitamin E is required to protect hair from UV light and prevent breakage. Vitamin E foods include sunflower seeds, almonds, pinenuts, spinach, avocado and olives. B-complex vitamins particularly biotin and vitamin B6 can boost rejuvenation, prevent thinning and increase scalp circulation. B-vitamins are almost always lost through refining of grains so keep to wholegrain foods such as brown rice, pot barley and whole wheat products. Rosemary essential oil is also noted for scalp circulation and can be added to organic hair products or mixed with coconut oil for a hair mask. Omega 3, an essential fat found in oily fish, flaxseed, walnuts and avocado helps strengthens and hydrate the hair.

Much like the skin, the condition of your hair can be an outward sign of your inside health. In times of illness, trauma or major life events it is not uncommon to see dramatic changes in hair condition in the subsequent weeks or months. With time, the hair usually recovers following such upheavals depending on our ability to adjust and cope. For most people the loss of hair condition is a gradual process that has more to do with the everyday stuff rather than any single traumatic experience. The nourishment we take in through our diet is always allocated to the most vital of organs first and to fuel the most demanding body systems in order to ensure our continued survival. From an evolutionary aspect, we were much hairier when we were bent over half-naked on all fours as hair helped protect us from the sun, trapped dirt and kept us warm. Being hairy back then was a plus for our survival. As we evolved upright, onto two legs and knitted ourselves a few jumpers we no longer needed so much body hair. We developed other strategies for protection and warmth and soon enough our head hair became more aesthetic than functional. For modern day human, hair has been relegated to a non-vital status and is one of the last ports of call when all the good nutrients, vitamins and minerals are being dished out. When it comes to glossy, lustrous locks our nutrition must be more than adequate for the crucial functioning of the body in order to have something left over for the less important things like hair and nails. There is no “one” super vitamin or mineral that will ensure continued growth and condition of the hair. Our hair, hair follicles and scalp utilizes a variety of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and essential fats once they are plentiful and consistent in the diet. Today’s diet has become deficient in many of the key nutrients our hair needs and this coupled with the added stress of modern living has wreaked havoc on our hair. As our hair is mainly made of protein, the quality of the protein we eat can influence the hair life cycle and its ability to grow and renew itself. Lean meat, fish, eggs, beans, nuts and seeds in their most natural form are good sources of proteins. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) has dual purpose of aiding the production of keratin and strengthening the hair follicles. Found in low quantities in foods such as leafy vegetables, swiss chard, watercress it is also available as a supplement in powder or capsules.

It is remarkable that as we have become less hairy through the ages, we have become more precious about the little bit of hair on our head. We often try to mask our lack-lustre hair with increasing amounts of chemicals and harsh hair treatments - which eventually can become more of a cause than a solution to a bad hair day. A truly nourished head of hair is the by-product of great inner health and well-being which is ultimately our finest feature! Excerpts From A Dingle Diary By Ted Creedon

Monday, May 18. Up at 7am and drove to Limerick to meet Liam O’Hanlon at the Granary Tourist office who was so impressed with the Ireland poem that he ordered £500 worth. Met Cian Ó’Carroll at Shannon Development who organised meetings with Bunratty Castle and the duty free shop at Shannon airport. An Iraqi jet attacked an American warship with missiles in the Persian Gulf killing around 30 sailors.

Wednesday, May 13, 1987.

Wednesday, May 20.

Had a phone call from Jimmy Deenihan T. D. this evening and spent at least half an hour discussing the proposed amendment to the National Monuments Act which is due for debate in the Dáil next week. The extent of his interest in and knowledge of the archaeological scene in Ireland was surprising.

Good sunny day. Tom Sheehy and the neighbours finished the silage by lunchtime. Discussed the new business with Bank of Ireland manager Vincent Ó’Sullivan and told him that I would need a biz loan, he said ‘No problem - do you want money today?’. A Stradivarius violin that was stolen from Carnegie Hall over 50 years ago was found in a town in Connecticut last week. It was made in 1713 and is now insured for $800,000.

Thursday, May 14. Learned with sadness of the death of Brenda Farrell, 20 year-old trainee teacher from the corner house at Dykegate Lane and Greys Lane. She taught one of our kids for a few weeks in the convent. Drove to Tralee and had meeting The Kerryman about printing 5000 colour copies of the ‘Ireland’ poem - estimate was £730. Called to photographer Michael Diggin at his home in Ballyard. Phone call later from Breandán MacGearailt about a new version of Dingle Tourism.

Friday, May 15. Signed agreement with the Údarás in their offices re a research grant for the new business which was witnessed by Lís Ní Dhálaigh. Met Paudie Fitzgerald and all is set for a guided tour of the west with his hardware partners next week. Met Rita Rohan from the Mall who is very upset about the death of Brenda Farrell, her friend, neighbour and flatmate. Met Dr Finbarr Ó Sé and we talked about the museum in the old Vocational school. It seems that somebody ran up a phone bill of over £1,000 and they can’t trace the culprits. John Lynch of Upper Main Street told me he has some old tool for securing the tracks on the Dingle railway and also a big jack for lifting the carriages. Went to church for the arrival of Brenda’s funeral from Dublin.

Saturday, May 16. Took some rubbish to the dump which has undergone some improvement works including a covering of hard-core material which means less muck for depositors! After an early lunch took kids to Milltown cemetery for Brenda’s funeral. There was a very large crowd and cars were parked along the road to Kilfountain and down to Milltown bridge. The senior pupils of Coláiste Íde formed a guard of honour at the gates. Brenda was a former pupil at the college. When the hearse arrived, adorned with flowers, it drove in to the cemetery for about 50 yards. The wreaths were taken off and carried by the Coláiste Íde girls. There was much weeping and sobbing at the graveside.

Sunday, May 17. We drove up to Lisdorgan after lunch and sympathised with Mary Devane and family on the recent death of Mary’s father. This has been AIDS week in the Irish media and the public have been saturated with advice on the associated dangers. Many people were shocked by the graphic presentation on the Late, Late Show of how to put on a condom. Coventry beat Spurs in the FA cup final in Wembley yesterday 3-2. U2 have topped the charts in America with their song With or Without You.

Thursday, May 21. A beautiful summer’s day with great waves of heat fog rolling over the peninsula - a very good sign of the weather - haven’t seen it so good in years. Drove to Killorglin with a framed Bewick for Marguerite Falvey’s gallery and she gave me two more to frame. She asked my advice about promoting Cappanalea outdoor centre as a tourist destination. I told her to employ a marketing consultant or to talk to Charlie Haughey when he opens the Skellig Hotel tomorrow.

Friday, May 22. At 9.30am met Breandán MacGearailt and Seán Ó Cadháin at the Údarás office and discussed the running of a business course with Anco in the area starting in September. Charlie Haughey opened the newly refurbished Skellig Hotel at around 6pm. There was plenty of booze flying all night. One person, who may have had a couple too many, turned right instead of left on leaving the hotel carpark and drove into the sea. The driver was ok but the car isn’t too good!

Saturday, May 23. The day is overcast and stormy-looking. Drove to Dún an Óir hotel where Paudie Fitzgerald and his hardware colleagues were boarding one of Seán Moran’s buses, driven by Kevin Devane. We set off on a guided tour of the area with stops at the museum in Ballyferriter, on to Gallarus, Kilmalkedar, and over to Dooneen before lunch in Dave Geaney’s pub. Then off to Brian Stacks workshop, Páidí Ó Sé’s pub, Slea Head and back to their hotel. Home by 6pm. Around 30 people were killed during a tornado strike in Texas yesterday.

Monday, May 25. Called to see Ógie Moran at the Údarás offices. Drove to Tralee and paid £296 to O’Keeffes for car insurance. Maggie Thatcher is hoping for a third consecutive General Election win next month.

Roast Pear, Walnut and Blue Cheese Salad Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School This salad is perfect as a lunch or a light supper. All of the elements of this salad work so well together, roast pear matched with a creamy blue cheese, salad leaves, walnuts and a sharp dressing provide a classic and delicious combination. If you are looking for a truly amazing blue cheese I would suggest to seek out Young Buck. Young Buck is a relatively new Irish blue cheese, it is creamy and sharp exactly as a good blue cheese should be. Other blue cheeses of note are Crozier Blue (sheep’s cheese), Bellingham Blue, Cashel or if you come across Kerry Blue Cheese. Ingredients For the dressing 60ml rapeseed oil 20ml cider vinegar ½ tsp. mustard salt and pepper For the salad 50g butter 4 pears, quartered and cored 1 tsp. honey handful of walnuts, chopped mixed salad leaves, washed and dried 100g good blue cheese, crumbled Method For the dressing Mix the oil, vinegar and mustard together in a bowl. Taste and season with salt and pepper. For the salad Heat a pan over medium heat and add the butter and the pears. Cook the pears until they have softened and browned then add the honey and cook for two minutes. Keep the pears warm while you finish the

salad. In a bowl, mix the salad leaves and walnuts and half of the blue cheese. Add in some of the dressing and mix this all together. To serve Take a handful of the dressed salad and place in the centre of four bowls. Arrange the warm pear on top of each bowl and sprinkle the remaining blue cheese over the bowl. Enjoy!!

We will also have a raffle during the night so a great chance to win some prizes Soccer Result: Castlegregory 2-0 Castlemaine Utd. A goal in either half was enough to see Castle take a vital 3 points from Sunday’s game. As always Castlemaine gave us a very stern test but despite missing 5 regulars we took the chances when they came. In the first half Castle had most of the possession but apart from a Damien Finn long range effort and a few half chances Castlemaine kept Castle out until just before half time Castle eventually made the breakthrough when Alan Mcnamara pounced on a loose ball in the box to score his second in as many games to give Castle a deserved lead and leave the score at 1-0 to the home team at HT. Castle kept the foot on the gas in the second half and created a number of good chances but it was a great individual goal by Kevin J Power that gave Castle a 2 goal cushion. Kevin received the ball out wide and broke into the box where he sold a great dummy on his right before finishing a lovely low shot to the far bottom corner 18 West Kerry Live

with his left. From here Castle managed the game out well to keep their clean sheet and a deserved 3 points. Best for Castle today were Enda Whelan Alan McNamara and Kevin Power. Best wishes also to the Castlemaine player that picked up a nasty knee injury forcing him off after treatment on the pitch from all at Castlegregory Celtic. Archaeology: On-Line Mapping Resources Isabel Bennett On-line mapping resources for carrying out archaeological research/Acmhainní agus léarscáileanna ar líne do lucht taighde na seandálaíochta Tá trí cinn de shuímh idirlín atá an-chabhrach don té a dteastaíonn uaidh taighde a dhéanamh ar a dhúthaigh féin nó ar ái ar biht sa tír. Ceann acu ná http://webgis.archaeology.ie/historicenvironment/ atá ag Seirbhís na Séadchomharthaí Náisiúnta (cuid den Roinn Ealaíon, Oidhreachta, Gnóthaí Réigiúnacha, Tuaithe agus Gaeltachta). Is féidir eolas a fháil ar shuíomh seandálaíochta ar bith roimh 1700 AD ar an suíomh seo. An dara ceann ná www.heritagemaps.ie. Is í an Chomhairle Oidhreachta a dheineann comhordú ar an gceann seo, a bhfuil fuíollach eolais ann faoi réimse leathan ábhar. Is le Suirbhéireacht Ordanáis na hÉireann an tríú ceann, http://maps.osi. ie/publicviewer/#V2,578432,756724,0,10. Anso gheobhair eolas ar an tír ós- na seanaléarscáileanna, cuid acu ón 1830 ar aghaidh. We are fortunate today in having access to the world at our fingertips, through the use of the internet. Those of us who carried out research in pre-internet days are envious of today’s students who can sit at their desks and find out, at a touch of the keyboard, where so many of our archaeological sites are located, as well as detailed information about many of them. There are three major map-based resources that will be of help to anyone carrying out such research in Ireland, even if it is only to have a look at what might be in the fields around your own house.

www.heritagemaps.ie co-ordinated by the Heritage Council working with the Local Authority Heritage Officer network and other partners, allows you to look at a wide range of built and natural heritage data sets in map form, many of which have never been accessible to date. This spatial data viewer focuses on the built, cultural and natural heritage around Ireland and offshore. The data sets were collected by both government departments and local authorities but some are only available on an individual county basis. There are over 600 data sets displayed in map form available, with over 150,000 mapped points of heritage and cultural interest. You can create cross-disciplinary views from these, crossing over administrative boundaries, subject boundaries, and the land-sea boundary. You may have seen some publicity recently about data set mapping of Sheela-na-Gigs on this site (although there are none of these exhibitionist figures situated on the Dingle Peninsula). The third map database which is essential to the researcher is that provided (though with limitations with regard to allowed use) by the Ordnance Survey of Ireland (OSI) at http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/ #V2,578432,756724,0,10. This major resource allows you to look at any part of the country in great detail at various periods in time from the late 1830’s onwards. Be careful when starting to use these resources – they are very addictive! To learn more about local archaeology, visit Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, www.westkerrymuseum.com. The museum will reopen on Saturday June 3 and will be open from 10.00 am – 5.00 pm each day for the summer season; Tel: 066 9156333 or info@westkerrymuseum. com. There is a café with fresh baking daily, a bookshop, and Wi-Fi. Buail isteach ag an Músaem chun tuilleadh eolais a fháil. Tá siopa leabhar, caife agus Wi-Fi ar fáil ann. Beidh an Músaem ar oscailt arís ar an 3ú Meitheamh agus gach lá ina dhiaidh san óna 10.00 r.n. – 5.00 i.n. Beidh fáilte romhat isteach.

On the website www.archaeology.ie (operated by the National Monuments Service (NMS), of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs) you can find, among much other information, a page which gives you access to the location of the many thousands of known, mainly pre-AD 1700, archaeological sites in the country and also to the thousands of buildings on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage (NIAH). Each entry generally also has some more detailed information about the site. This can be found at http://webgis.archaeology.ie/historicenvironment/. Once you access the page, you can zoom into the area in which you are interested. You can also search this site in a variety of ways – townland, monument type, etc. The archaeological records contained on the site are known as the ‘Sites and Monument Record (SMR)’, and the website is regularly updated. The general public is invited to send information to the NMS about monuments discovered which might not already be on the maps.

Féile An Phráta By now I’m sure you are all well and truly on the way with your spud growing keeping a close eye on their progress. We’ve had a busy spring here on the organising committee. Changes in personnel mean we are still getting our feet off the ground and all taking up our new roles with gusto. Our launch night at Dingle Cookery School saw a lovely turnout of both locals, participating schools and some local organisers. We have planned to make further contact with all of the schools and Susan our RunaÍ has been in contact with all of our forever faithful parish organisers. She will touch base with them again in the near future to finalise dates for parish heats. We are here to support those parish organisers and assist in any way we can the running of the parish heats which this year will be held between the 5th and the 14th of July. So parish organisers out there you can expect our call as we have lots of exciting ideas to share with you. Over the Easter Weekend we held a Quiz night in Tigh TP where we had a total of 12 tables, both locals and tourists taking part. We got great feedback on the night from those visiting the area which is always very encouraging. Funds raised were split between the Feile and the Defribrilatior in the village. The funds contributed to the Feile will be spent on the running costs on the day of the Croabh. On the sponsorship side of things we are progressing nicely again this year with Bord Bia, Radio na Geltachta, Kerry Co Council and Udaras na Gaeltachta all back on board. We are changing up some of the prizes this year so watch this space and as always Corn Paddy Phurge will be up for grabs between the participating schools. Judging from the childrens performance on Cleas Act on TG4 le deanai the school kids of Scoil Mhaolcheadair reckon they’re hot favourites again this year. Who will challenge them? Just this evening I have confirmation of interest from the ladies who are natives of Clochán Bhreanainn and a fine spud grower from Annascaul who knows his stuff. The boys back west should sit up and take note and be of the belief that the competition is hotting up ! Over the next few weeks I will keep you all posted with different aspects of this years festival from the dates of the local heats to rules and regulations for entry to the competitions along with closing dates to the Prata Plata. In the meantime, folks make a note of the date of the final in your diaries, Sunday July 16th – we’d love to see you there. Elaine - 086 1006046 Ag an tráth seo táim cinnte go bhfuil na prátaí curtha agaibh agus sibh ag coimeád súil ar a ndul chun cinn in imeacht aimsire. Tá tréimhse gnóthach curtha isteach ag an gcoiste go dtí seo i mbliana agus sin fós ag iarraidh na cosa a chuir fúinn mar choiste nua ach táimid ag tabhairt faoin ndúshlán gan stró. D’éirigh go maith le seoladh oifigiúil na Féile a reáchtáladh i Scoil Chócaireachta an Daingin ar a d’fhreastal muintir na háite, ionadaithe os na scoileanna áitiúla mar aon le lucht eagraithe na féile sna paróistí. Beidh teagmháil rialta á choimeád againn leis na scoileanna agus bhí ár Rúnaí, Susan, i dteagmháil le lucht eagraithe na Féile sna paróístí éagsúla le gairid. Beidh teagmháil á dhéanamh aici arís sara fada chun dátaí a aontú leo maidir leis na comórtais áitiúla. Tá an choiste anseo chun tacú libhse, na comhordnóirí sna paróistí in aon slí gur féidir linn. Reáchtálfar na comótais sna paróistí idir 4 - 15 Iúil i mbliana. Bígí ag súil le clos uainn. Reáchtáladh Tráth na gCeist boird i rith na Cásca i dtábhairne TP i mBaile na nGall, ina raibh 12 bord, agus ghlac idir dhaoine áitiúla agus cuairteoirí páirt ann. Fuarthas aischothú an dearfach ar an oíche, rud a chabhraíonn go mór linn inár n-iarrachtai Féile mar seo a choimeád sa tsiúl. Roinneadh an t-airgead ar an oíche idir an Fhéile agus an fearas Defib ar an mbaile. Ó thaobh urraíochta de, tá tacaíocht geallta ag Bord Bia, Raidió na Gaeltachta, Comhairle Contae Chiarraí. Beidh iarratas á sheoladh go dtí Údarás na Gaeltachta agus súil againn tacaíocht a fháil arís i mbliana uatha freisin. Ba léir ó bheith ag faire ar leanaí Scoil Mhaolchéadair ar ‘Cleas Act’ aréir go bhfuil siad féin mar rogha na coitiantachta arís i mbliana. An gcuirfidh aon scoil eile dushlán ina gcoinne?

Tá léiriú spéise faighte ó ghrúpa ban ón dtaobh thíos de chnoc i gClochán Bréanainn agus ó cheantar Abha na Scáil ó fear go bhfuil a ainm in áirde nuair a thagann sé go dtí prátaí. Is léir go gcaithfidh na fir in Iarthar Dhuibhneach bheith ag faire amach mar is léir go mbeidh comórtas fíor spéisiúil ann i mbliana. Beidh eolas á roinnt agam libh sna seachtainní romhainn maidir le gach réimse den bhFéile, dátaí na comórtais áitiúla, rialacha na gcomórtais agus dáta dúnta don Práta Pláta. Idir an dá linn, cuir dáta an Chraobh i bhur dialanna, An Domhnach 16 Iúil - táimid ag súil tú a fheiscint ann. Elaine - 086 1006046

Dingle Notes Richie Williams Tidy Towns. The recent long dry spell brought its own problems in the form of flower tubs and beds drying out fast and needing watering to keep them blooming. However it was good painting weather and at least we got some outstanding jobs off the list over the past few weeks. The Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m.and no matter how little people may feel they can contribute everybody can help as our work covers so many different areas and does not need specialised skills or interest in gardening alone.Again we appeal to all property owners to at least contribute by regularly cleaning outside their own houses or business outlets. Nature Walk. A Nature Walk along Beenbawn Head is scheduled for Sunday next May 28th meeting at Beenbawn Beach at 2p.m. Admission is free and an interesting hours chat will highlight this areas unique store of flora, fauna, wildlife, folklore and rock formation so an education not to be missed indeed. Festival. The Global Rhythms Festival organised by Cuisle Chorca Dhuibhne is a community based not for profit festival scheduled over the June Bank Holiday Weekend here in Dingle.Various drumming and dance workshops for all levels and abilities will be complemented by gigs and interactive public drum sessions. The Festival tent based in An Conair Beer Garden will host a series of top performers right through from early Friday to Late Whit Sunday evening.Yes this June Weekend needed some action here in Dingle so plenty in this programme to suit all ages and interests.

footwear and clothing is recommended for all participants. Milltown Bridge. The Public Meeting hosted by the Tidy Towns Committee was very well attended and a wide variety of ideas were aired on the night. It was generally agreed that Safety for all road users who traverse the Bridge is of paramount importance especially with the huge increase in leisure holidays and pastimes here in the Peninsula in recent years. However agreement was not reached on how best to put short term and long term methods of increased safety in place so a working group of 5 agreed to research the matter further and produce more definite proposals within the next few months. The members of the working group are Eileen O Sullivan, Micheal O Concubhair, John Griffin, Peter Malone and Michael Carroll, all local residents who have a direct interest in developments in their area. The Tidy Towns Group are hopeful that a Public Nature Talk will be arranged shortly to highlight the vast variety of wildlife which live in the vicinity of Milltown Bridge. Parking. I am delighted to see that at least 2 people who drive to work in Dingle have decided to park their vehicles on the outskirts of town and free up spaces in the town as requested in these notes last issue. Lets hope more will follow this good example and contribute in some way to our parking problem in the short term. Every extra space left in town by employees or business proprietors has the potential to be used at least 20 times during each day by shoppers or people needing to park for short periods while spending in our local shops or other outlets. Yes the potential turnover in each extra parking space could save jobs or indeed whole business outlets from closing down altogether so please think before you park every day. Slan Tamall!!!.

Mount Brandon. The Dingle Skellig Leisure Club annual Mount Brandon Climb in memory of Martin Scanlon will be held this Sunday May 28th meeting at the Car Park in Baile Breac at 10a.m.Voluntary donations on the day will be presented to Bru Columbanus Cork.Proper West Kerry Live 27

The Connacht Community Colin Sheeran Pat Lam is leaving Connacht after four years as coach of the western provinces’ rugby team. The changes at the Sportsground from his first day to his last day have been considerable. His approach was unusual so his successes are intriguing. In aiming for some things, he achieved many others. The vocabulary of rugby players and coaches has morphed since the introduction of professionalism. Post-match interviews sound like excerpts from the instruction manual for a new hoover. “We were hoping to put forward pods into the corridor of power to leverage our assets to achieve go forward at the breakdown.” Lam’s lexicon was an early indicator marking the difference of his approach. Mr. Lam focused on the intangibles and the unmeasurables. Bandying around words like community he narrowed his attentions to the broadest aspects of sport that he could find. Lam had targets that were too touchy feely for the sports app developers list. Self-esteem? Goodwill? Pat, these are not actionable deliverables? I am sure Connaught employed someone to tell the players how much chicken and pasta to put in the bowl but under Lam those types of details seemed ancillary to the real work. Another core plank of strategy in coaching modern sports comes from the business mantra of “what gets measured, gets managed”. Devotees of the inputs and outputs approach to sports are busy measuring absolutely everything they can. Nutrition, calorific targets, movement, hydration levels, electrolyte variances; give it a number and somehow it is part of the reason why Brian O’Driscoll knew how to sidestep. Lam’s alternative strategy was to give his players a ball each and tell them to keep it on their person at all times. And let us be clear. It is much harder to embrace the unmeasurables. It is much harder to try to inspire people to feel part of a team then it is to tell people the team is going to play in the x formation. Technicalities are easy to explain and they sound clever. That is why they are so popular. Lam’s approach was as brave as it was refreshing and is was a delight to see the rewards accumulating out West. His broad approach off the field was reflected on the field as the players served up some scintillating, optimistic, attacking play week after week. It is a grand thing to see people operating at the peak of their physical powers but it is an immense thing to see people relentlessly backing their own abilities. Confidence has a higher rate of infection than is often diagnosed. It wasn’t perfect but it was perfect enough to deliver the league last season. Is that what he did, coached his players to win the league when no-one but no-one thought that was possible? Too narrow. That’s not really what he did. He got everyone to think differently about Connaught rugby. Is that fair to say? Yes, I think it is. The supporters, the local businessmen, the IRFU, the players, the coaching staff, the opposition players, the Irish team coaching staff; they all think about Connaught rugby very, very differently today to how they did in January 2013. And that is a singular and impressive achievement. It may be tempting to let disappointment be tinged with bitterness because Lam is leaving. But he is a coach, not a saint and the reason the space opens up is for you to move into it. Indeed, leaving could be his final act of coaching. If everyone around Connaught rugby was listening, they will have learned the lesson, it’s about the community and not about Pat Lam, And so, without him, they are the same.

World Oceans Day

Think Before You Flush in Dingle!

We don’t need to be reminded of how amazing our oceans are especially when we are lucky as to live in Kerry! However… what lies beneath? The oceans know no boundaries and in their sheer vastness they are home to over a million species of plant and animal and it is now estimated that we have only discovered 10% of them! However, we are poisoning our oceans at a rate to which we may never discover all of these species. High levels of toxic compounds are frequently causing death and infertility to our larger species such as Whales and Dolphins. However not all the pollution is as invisible and some is very much visible when we walk our beautiful beaches. It is estimated that what we see on our beaches worldwide is only 15% of the total plastic in the ocean and that another 70% of marine litter is on the seabed and 15% is floating! So all that rubbish we find on our beaches is only a fraction of how much plastic is really out there! Each piece of plastic that doesn’t end up in the sea may well be the piece that saves a sea bird or marine animal from ingesting it by accident! We can make a difference! To celebrate World Ocean’s day and Clean Coasts week, Dingle Oceanworld is organising a Beach clean extravaganza at the longest beach on the West Coast of Ireland! And we are planning to do the whole lot! All 13km of it! So in order to succeed, we need people-power so if you are around and can spare a few minutes or even half an hour to help, every extra pair of hands will make a huge impact! So we are taking a two pronged approach, we will begin at both ends and meet in the middle!

Think Before You Flush is a public awareness campaign operated by An Taisce’s Clean Coasts programme and is supported by Irish Water. The campaign was born out of a need to keep marine litter from being flushed down our toilets, flowing through the sewage systems, swimming through the sea and ending up on our beaches as marine litter. Clean Coasts commissioned a survey of the nation’s flushing behaviour and found out that 3 in 10 Irish adults have flushed items other than toilet paper down the toilet. The two biggest culprits our clean coast groups find on the beaches are cotton buds and baby wipes. Our survey found that 43% of people thought these items were removed in the waste water treatment plant, unfortunately they are not.

So we are will start the day at 9:30am on Thursday 8th of June (World Oceans Day) at both the Fermoyle car park (Cloghane end) and also the at Spillane’s carpark on the Maherees. You can join us on the day, anywhere in between or for the whole lot! We need people to join in and lend a hand throughout the day! If you’d like to join in at any stage on the day please call Louise on 085 8173999 or Susan on 087 1161364. Can’t wait to see you there! - Louise and all the Dingle aquarium gang!

This year Think Before You Flush is running programmes in 9 communities around the country, of which Dingle is one. There have been Think Before You Flush workshops in all the Dingle town schools running fun and informative experiments for local children. Dingle Tidy Towns & Mara Beo Dingle Aquarium are also promoting this initiative so look out for information stands over the next couple of weeks! We want to get as many businesses involved in the town, especially those involved in tourism... to lessen the burden on our loos and environment! If you would like a Think before You Flush information pack with infographic posters and tent cards for guest houses/ B&Bs / businesses etc. they will be available to collect from the West Kerry Live office on Goat Street and from Mara Beo Dingle Aquarium. If you want a pack or to learn more please contact Susan on 087 116 1364

What are the benefits of immersion education in Irish? Learning through the medium of Irish offers your child a unique learning experience that enriches learning and progress in many ways. Immersion education provides native speakers with an opportunity to enrich their Irish-language skills. Learners who are non-native speakers are also provided with the opportunity to be immersed in the language. Immersion education in Irish supports the child’s language acquisition and enrichment, and consequently, develops the child’s capacity to learn other languages. It is recognised that immersion education is the most effective approach to teach and acquire a second language in a school setting. 32 West Kerry Live

Tidy Towns Action Group plans to Paint the Village Red with a Bit of Blue other parts of the country and who otherwise would perhaps be unremembered. In addition it memorialises some of the religious refugees, Palatines and Huguenots from Germany and France who lived and died in Annascaul. The Church of Ireland congregation has supported this effort as has the Education Training Board and Kerry County Council Community Fund and which provided some funding for both information boards and for a slate memorial to those buried there. Photo: Peter Zöeller It has often been speculated that Dan Foley’s pub on Annascaul’s Main Street was thought by visitors to this country to typify Irish village life. Indeed it is still not unusual to see tourists stopping outside what was once one of Ireland’s most iconic pubs and peering inside the windows vainly looking for signs of life. Though Foley’s Bar has long since closed it still stands as a monument to its late owner, but it’s not wearing so well. Time and climate are taking their toll and the colours, bright blues, yellows, reds and some pink, bought and applied by Dan many years ago are cracking and fading.

TG4 the Irish language television station visited the village this week to record the institution of a Junior Tidy Towns Group at Scoil Bhreac Chluin. A sense of environmental responsibility permeates the atmosphere of this Green Flag school which has a green flag committee made up of enthusiastic pupils. Organic gardening is an essential feature of school life as is the observation of the insect life which inhabits the bug hotel. This garden was hewed from the earth by Terry Collins with the support of South

Kerry Development Partnership. All of this was recorded by a film crew and was broadcast on the evening news programme last Monday evening. ATTAG initiated the contact with the television station having sought permission from the school to set up this junior group. Happily the event at Scoil Bhreac Chluin occurred on National Biodiversity Day the start of a a week of international, national and local activity which is supported by the UN and UNESCO and is directed towards encouraging ‘care for nature’. On Friday evening Attag will host a gathering marking the occasion at the O’Connor Gallery, South Pole Inn, Annascaul at 7.30. Entitled ‘How to Love Nature so that Nature will Love You’ it will feature speakers from Transition Towns Corca Dhuibhne, Transition Towns is a voluntary endeavour that is committed to cherishing nature and developing ways in which care for nature can enhance us all. A sentiment with which the Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group can concur.

However help may well be on its way. Annascaul Tidy Towns Action Group has been been talking to the present owner about refurbishing the exterior and local painter John Fahy has offered to do the paintwork with Dara Knightly willing to do the signwriting. If agreement and timetabling can be arranged, soon it will mean that the village will once again boast and enjoy the hues that were seen on the thousands of Dan Foley postcards sent home by visitors every year. This initiative is just one of several undertaken by ATTAG recently to further brighten the village for its residents, visitors and the Tidy Towns judge’s visit in June. Already the bridge has been freshly painted and flowers and plants placed in strategic places around the area. New street furniture has been acquired including planters, assembled by local carpenter Tommy Griffin. Setting them off with blue and white flowers is intended to honour our local GAA team whose players don a kit of those colours on every match day, and is known as the ‘Blue Army’. Work on structural improvements to the hazardous footpath on the back road has commenced. This has happened due to ATTAG building contacts with the relevant council officials and lobbying for funding Every Monday evening the volunteer squad are out in the village weeding, tidying up and recently repairing some of the stonework in the old Church of Ireland graveyard. This latter activity grew out of the action group acquiring knowledge of the history of this last resting place of forty-one souls many of them from West Kerry Live 33

K-Fest: Music & The Arts Get Ready for Another Great June Bank Holiday K-Fest Music & The Arts, a four-day festival that celebrates emerging visual artists of all disciplines, returns to Killorglin from June 2nd to 5th with its biggest roster of events yet, featuring more than 140 visual artists exhibiting in 20 galleries throughout town, over 30 live bands, slam poets, spoken word artists, theatre performers, buskers, dancers, street entertainment, and a myriad family activities. Ninety-five percent of the nearly 80 events at K-Fest are free to the public. For the second year in a row, K-Fest opened its art submissions to the general public and received submissions from approximately 350 visual artists specialising in paint, print, sculpture, illustration, ceramics, textiles, photography, video, audio-visual, and mixed media. The selection process was difficult, as the arts committee had to weed out more than half of the submissions. The judging panel — this year comprising artists and curators Roisín McGuigan, Daire Lynch, and Emily O’Flynn — will have an even more difficult time, as they are charged with narrowing down the selected artists to four finalists and one winner of the Screaming Pope Prize, which recognises a single outstanding work of visual art. “As usual, painters make up the majority of the visual artists who will fill the town this K-Fest,” says Neil Browne, Artistic Director. “However, this year Killorglin will also host more sculptors than ever before at the festival. This changes the experience quite a bit, as patrons aren’t simply viewing art in the usual two-dimensional way — that is, paintings on a wall — but will gather more in the centres of the galleries and be able to take in 360 degrees worth of much of the artwork.”

well as three one-man plays. “Punt” is a story of gambling culture and the adventures involved with a life of investing in chance. “God Has No Country” portrays the life of legendary Kerry priest Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty. In “A Sacrilegious Lesbian & Homosexual Parade,” Brian Fleming, a straight drummer from Dublin and unlikely ally to an Irish LGBT community struggling for acceptance, portrays his witnessing of the changing tide over 14 years as the “gay protest parade” gradually becomes a cherished community event.

events, visit www.kfest.ie or any of K-Fest’s social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Vimeo, or YouTube).

The music programme kicks off Friday June 2nd, with Breakout, a competition for the brightest of emerging DJ Producers in Ireland. The winner of eight competitors, who were selected through a submissions process in mid-May, will receive a Full Title Recordings package, including a release, radio play, promotion, and more. A few highlights for the nighttime gigs include R.S.A.G., a one-man show of sound, visuals, and incendiary rhythm and samples; Farah Elle, alternative pop singer/songwriter whose rhythmic lyrics, piano-driven songs and distinctive voice aim to reveal something of the beauty in the ephemeral everyday; and Dashka, award-winning producer, DJ, and instrumentalist, plus nearly two dozen more upand-coming bands and musicians across all genres. Special to K-Fest this year is the classical programme, which features two concerts — one by baritone Gavan Ring, accompanied by returning pianist Santa Ignace and one by 10 young classical singers and musicians.

HANDMADE IN DINGLE K-Fest’s “K-Kids,” the kids and family programme is also bigger than ever this year, boasting 30 events, including an art gallery, arts and crafts and giant bubble making workshops, a science lab, music therapy family challenge, fairy trail, The Bricx Club, Disney’s Moana, and much more. In fact, the entire festival is pulling away from the walls and even the indoors at times, as art installations, buskers, and other performers and movement instructors take to the streets, with an expanded road closure the Saturday and Sunday of the festival. K-Fest will also have a craft market and its first ever food court, with bites, drinks, and plentiful picnic tables on offer, allowing visitors to soak in the sun rays and indulge in local fare between gallery visits. The festival opens with “The Craic House” on Friday night, a spoken word event that welcomes all readers to recite the funniest verse the written word has to offer. Among the other 13 spoken word events are three slam poets — Lewis Kenny, Felispeaks, and Mel White — as

K-Fest affords new and emerging artists from Ireland and beyond the ability to showcase their work to more than 5,000 eventgoers each year during the June Bank Holiday Weekend, providing opportunities for patronage, partnerships, and community building with fellow artists and local residents. K-fest aims to promote culture in all its forms, to nurture the growth of the arts and music, and to foster participation in the arts and artistic thought for all ages. The K-Fest name is associated with cultural innovation, artistic exploration and excellence, and for showcasing fun, eclectic, and thought-provoking events while setting and maintaining high-production standards across all its programmes. Plantar Fasciitis – Foot Pain

with high arches there may be excessive strain on the heel due to the foots limited range of movement and thus a decreased ability to adapt to the ground during movement.

Eddie O’Grady

Plantar fasciitis is also commonly associated with tightness in the calves, hamstrings and gluteal regions. Muscles in these areas have a significant effect on gait and thus foot biomechanics . Biomechanics is basically the science of movement, so when you hear the phrase ”poor biomechanics” used it is basically referring to inefficiency during movement.

Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatory condition of the connective tissue on the sole of the foot (the plantar fascia). It is often caused by overuse of the plantar fascia, the tendons that help form the arch of the foot , running from the heel along the sole of the foot towards the toes. The plantar fascia basically acts as shock absorber for the foot during movement while helping maintain the arch of the foot during standing. Plantar fasciitis is easiest treated when caught early. Longstanding cases often demonstrate more degenerative changes in the tissue than just inflammatory changes. This condition is called termed plantar fasciosis and can be much more difficult to treat. While plantar fasciitis is often attributed to overuse in athletes, among non-athletic populations it is sometimes associated with a high body mass index in combination with long periods of weight bearing. Also people with flat feet or high arches tend to be more at risk. A flat foot tends to put increased strain on the origin of the plantar fascia at the heel (calcaneus) as the plantar fascia attempts to maintain a stable arch during the propulsive stage of the gait(walking, running etc.). Excessive movement of the forefoot in relation to the heel during movement can also predispose to plantar fasciitis. In people

present; strengthening exercises for the intrinsic muscles of the feet; taping the heel into inversion (short term solution); changing to proper supportive footwear containing well supported arches and midsoles In extreme cases when all else has failed corticosteroid injections may be considered if there is a bursitis in the heel, with surgery used as a last resort. This condition is usually resolved swiftly by an experienced practitioner without the need for surgery or corticosteroid injections.

With the condition, the pain is usually gradual in onset and felt on the medial aspect of the heel and/or sole of the foot. Initially it is worse in the morning and decreases with activity, often aching afterwards. Periods of inactivity during the day are generally followed by an increase in pain as activity is recommenced. As the condition becomes more severe, the pain may be present when weight-bearing and worsen with activity. Treatment Effective treatment uses a multifaceted approach which may involve some or all of the following ; the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); deep tissue massage to the plantar fascia, along with deep tissue work to loosen out the calves, hamstrings and gluteal regions where necessary; stretching exercises for the plantar fascia and calf muscles; avoid- Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at Ré Nua Clinic ance of aggravating activity, biomechanical & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) correction with orthotics, electro-acupuncture and cold compression of the heel bursitis, if

Nótaí ón Diseart Coirmcheoil le Cór agus Ceolfhoireann Nua-Cheoil an Daingin. An Díseart 19 Bealtaine 2017 Chuir An Díseart fáilte roimis Cór agus Ceolfhoireann Nua-Cheoil an Daingin ar an Aoine seo caite. Nach iontach an áit í Corca Dhuibhne go meallann sí daoine cumasacha ar feadh na huaire? Tá seans linn go dtána Gábor Péli inár measc ón Ungáir. Is ceoltóir cruthanta é a thug fé Cór agus Ceolfhoireann Nua-Cheoil an Daingin a bhunú. Bhailigh sé slua daoine – banaltraí, cócairí, mná tí, feirmeoirí, potadóirí, siopadóirí, múinteoirí - agus a thuilleadh. D’éirigh leis iad a mhúnlú agus a mhúineadh sa tslí go bhfuilid anois ar ardchaighdeán. Tugtar cuireadh do phobal Chorca Dhuibhne dul ag éisteacht leo ag sraith coirmeacha ceoil a eagraítear i rith na bliana. Ní mór na hocáidí atá níos taitneamhaí ná na hócáidí seo. Bhí coirmcheoil an Aoine, 19 Bealtaine, ar fheabhas. Bhain a raibh i láthair taitneamh iontach as. Bhíodar tógtha ó thalamh na hÉireann ar feadh cúpla uair a chloig. Ár mbuíochas le Gábor agus le gach éinne sa chór agus sa cheolfhoireann. Tá éacht oibre déanta agaibh! Bainígí taitneamh as briseadh an tsamhraidh agus beimíd ag súil le sibh a chlos arís sa bhfómhar. An Diseart was delighted to host last Friday’s concert by the Dingle New-Music Choir and Orchestra under the tutelage of Gábor Péli. As usual the audience were transported to another world as they listened to this sublime music in this exquisite setting. The programme included pieces by Joseph Hayden, Gabriel Fauré, Giuseppi Verdi and George Friederic Handel – to name but a few. We are grateful to Gábor Péli who set up this choir and orchestra through notices and adverts in such places as West Kerry Live. The success and great reputation of the choir and orchestra is a testament to his musical ability and his vision. All of the recitals are sell outs and people speak about these concerts for weeks afterwards. Thank you Gábor, and everybody who works so hard in the choir and orchestra. Have a good summer’s rest but we will be waiting to hear you again in the autumn!

Glamping in Camp. Last Sunday, under a blaze of sunshine, Coach Field Camp opened their doors to the locals of the area. Speculation was rife in the many local establishments of Camp as to what was going on in the old Horse Drawn Caravan site behind Ashe's Pub in the village. What was revealed on Sunday were beautifully handcrafted vardo camping pods and a large teepee. Coach Field Camp will boost the number of holiday makers to the local area, by giving those who like the adventure of a camping holiday but still want comfort, another option.

Tommy said "The pods are handcrafted in the age old tradition of the vardo horse drawn carriage which visited this same site many years ago. The difference now is we offer all the home comforts we have grown to expect. Each pod has a full supply of power, free WiFi and tea/coffee making facilities. We are now open for bookings and are delighted to report that we already have a number of booking for the coming weeks which is a great boost to businesses in the area. " www.CoachFieldCamp.com

Míle Buíochas My name is Jamie Flannery and I have been part of UCD Volunteers Overseas since 2014. UCD Volunteers Overseas is a charity which was set up in UCD in 2003 and over 140 students volunteer yearly in 5 different countries around the world. In 2014 I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to travel to Haiti and teach in a primary school for a month. In 2015 I travelled to Tanzania and taught computers and English to both teachers and children in three different primary schools in the town of Morogoro. This year the funds which I am raising are going towards the funding of the new computer lab in one of the three schools I will be working in this coming summer along with purchasing resources for teaching English to primary school children. I would like to thank Elizabeth Brookes and everyone who helped in the organisation of a Bingo fundraising evening on my behalf recently in Annascaul. I would also like to thank all of Annascaul ICA, Annascaul Whist, Camp, Dingle, Ballyferriter, Ballydavid and Annascaul for coming out supporting my fundraising event.

Dingle Bay Rovers Juniors DBR U12S Well what a way to bring the curtain down on our 3rd season in the Kerry Schoolboys and girls league. Our hard working u12s took to the pitch over in Mastergeeha already knowing that the had won the u12s Div 2 league but they wanted to win it in style. They went on to beat the home team 4-0 and the referee on the day presented the cup to captain Paddy Ryan . Alot of us thought they were good enough to be in a higher division but they will get that chance next season at u13 leve . In his speech Paddy thanked coaches Paudie Moran and Rónán Kennedy for all their hard work during the season and all the parents who travelled to all the games. Great credit must go to all these players for the way they worked all season and we will look on with interest to see how they will fare next season.

divisions from last season. In fact our u15s were our 1st team to play premier league soccer. Each team had their highs and lows but this was very much to be expected. They all finished mid table in their divisions and we hope the players regroup fo next year and have another go. We want to thank Keith, Tim and Kenny for all their hard wor , making sure all these players are well coached and looked after. DBR Soccer Moms And Dads Our sincere thanks to all the parents who were always on hand to travel to games and encourage the players at all times . This club would be nothing without everyone of ye.

DBR u9s and u10s Our Academy finished last week in Pobailscoil Chorca Dhuibhne and we would like to sincerely thank Pádraig Feirtear for letting use the pitch during the season. We very much need more people to help out at these ages because it is our intention to start younger age groups from next season. It is a joy to watch this age group train and play games because it seems every goal is like scoring in the champions league final . Great credit is due to Gearoid , Joe and Mike for looking after all the players. DBR u11s Our U11’s got their 1st taste of league action in Div 1 and we had some great battles during the season, none more so then the 5-5 draw with top of the table Iveragh two weeks ago. Some fantastic performances along the way . The number one priority by Gearóid and Joe was to give every player plenty of time on the pitch. They will now be graded into groups for a crack at the u12 division next season.

Ticket sold by Paul P.O.Sullivan. Next Week’s Jackpot €11,500 Cromane GAA Minors: Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane 1-13, Renard/St Mary’s 1-13 Sometimes you just have to appreciate effort and desire in a game of football. Both sides in last Friday’s county minor league Division 5 final had those ingredients in shovelfuls. The game ebbed and flowed and, in the end (after 90 hectic minutes), the tide is still out on who to crown as Division 5 champions. For now, both sets of players can be content with getting an extended applause from the large crowd in attendance at Glenbeigh GAA pitch last Friday evening. As for the football. Well, the first half wasn’t great as both sides looked nervous in the slippery conditions. It was 0-3 apiece at half-time. Renard/St Mary’s seemed to have gained the upper hand in the first ten minutes of the second half, outscoring Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane (GGC) by 0-4 to 0-1 to take a healthy 0-7 to 0-4 lead. The highlights here were two quickfire Rory O’Shea points after 40 minutes. The hosts didn’t fade away though and stormed back in the next quarter kicking 1-4 without reply. The likes of Conor Sugrue, Dara Casey, and Oisin O’Connor laid the foundations for the revival. Sean Tadhg Sheahan was on hand to poach the goal from close range while Adrian O’Connor opened up and kicked some great points. Adrian, the GGC captain, led by example kicking 0-8, five from play. This purple patch left GGC in a good position leading by 1-8 to 0-7 with ten left. However, it was the visitors turn to up the ante and some good interplay from Eoghan McDaid and Robert Wharton set up Rory O’Shea for a late goal to put one in it (1-8 to 1-7). Muiris Fitzgerald tapped over a free to level it before an outstanding McDaid point looked as if it had won the title for Renard/St Mary’s. We spoke too soon as captain Adrian O’Connor swung over a late point with his left to level matters again (1-9 each). GGC then had their chance to win it but a fierce Ethan Griffin drive was brilliantly saved by Cian Esmond in the Renard/St Mary’s goal. We were going to need extra time to slice and dice this one. The light stayed with us as the clock ticked past 9pm when extra time got underway. Again Renard/St Mary’s restarted the better and led by 1-11 to 1-10 at halftime in extra time. GGC’s lead score was converted by Gearoid Griffin, his fourth point of the evening. The second half of extra time was very stop-start but two more Adrian O’Connor points, his 7th and 8th of the night, edged GGC back in front with time almost up. The last act (deep into injury time in extra time) of this fantastic tussle was a terrific run by Renard/St Mary’s full-back Blaine McCarthy. It ended with him being fouled and Muiris Fitzgerald kicked over his fourth free of the final to end the game’s scoring at 1-13 apiece. Referee Christy Crowley (who did very well throughout) blew up from the resultant kick-out and both sides received the ovation that they richly deserved. They will have to do it all again at a later date. Well done to both sides.

O’Connor (Glenbeigh/Glencar, captain). Subs: Jack O’Shea (Cromane) for S Ahern 44m, Patrick Moroney (Cromane) for P Griffin (60m, extra time), Brice Dourieu (Cromane) for M O’Connor (70m, half time in extra time), S Ahern for D Casey (75m extra time). Under-12S: Cromane started phase two of the Under-12 County League with two games at home to Ballyheigue on Sunday. In the Division 5A game, Cromane battled hard all through in a very tight game before eventually falling short by a point. They trailed by 1-8 to 3-5 at half time - Cromane’s goal coming from Joshua O’Sullivan – and then left Ballyheigue in for two quick goals at the start of the second half. However, then they proceeded to dominate play and goals from Jack McGrath and Conor Hayes got them back to within one but they just could not find the equalising, or winning, score. Final score: Cromane 4-11, Ballyheigue 5-9 In the Division 5B game (eight-a-side) Cromane found it tough going in the first half against a strong win, trailing by 0-4 to 4-6. However, they composed themselves in the second half – with Sian Corkery impressing – and outscored their opponents by 1-10 to 1-1 to leave the final score: Cromane 1-14, Ballyheigue 5-8. Brendan O’Shea Shield Final Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh 3 – 09 Following victories at senior and U-16 ½ Meán Scoil Nua an Leith Triúigh made it a treble by winning the U15 Kerry Colleges in Austin Stack Park. This is the third Kerry Colleges medal for many of this team in what can only be described as an incredible year. Meán Scoil began the game slowly and trailed by 9 points to 4 at half time despite having a strong breeze at their backs. 2 good efforts from Cian Cronin and one each from Cian O’Grady and Stephen Smith Galvin kept them in touch. Following a few harsh words at half time from team management Meán Scoil were a different team in the second half and took complete control of the game in the opening 10 minutes scoring 2 – 02 to one point from Ballybunion which gave them a two point lead. These goals came from the ever industrious Séamus Lyne and the Meán Scoil talisman Cian O’Grady who was inspirational in the second half. Although 46 West Kerry Live

Ballybunion did fight back, points from Cian O’Grady, Conor O’Leary and Séamus Lyne kept them ahead. As the game entered the final 10 minutes Cian O’Grady again found the back of the Ballybunion net with a rocket into the top corner. With both teams down to 14 men at this stage it was the Castlegregory boys who had the strength of character to see out an enthralling contest. The Meán Scoil team should be very proud of their performance led by the likes of Eoin Kennedy in goal, Fionn Ó Cuilleanáin, Adam and David Costello, Séamus Lyne and Cian O’Grady. With over half the team under age for this competition again next year there is certainly a bright future ahead of these talented footballers. Huge credit is due to the management team of Jonathan Lyne and Séamus O’Grady.

Summer At The Garden Café Love Can Be Complicated le Felicity Hayes-McCoy ‘The Garden Café, in the town of Lissbeg, on Ireland’s Finfarran Peninsula, is a place where plans are formed and secrets shared... But Jazz - still reeling from her father’s disclosures about the truth of his marriage to her mother, Hanna - has more on her mind than the comings and goings at the café. Now isolated from friends and family and fixating on her new job at a local guesthouse, she’s started to develop feelings for a man who is strictly off limits... Meanwhile Hanna, Lissbeg’s librarian, is unaware of the turmoil in her daughter’s life - until her ex-husband Malcolm makes an appearance and she begins to wonder if the secrets she’s carried for him might have harmed Jazz more than she’d realised. As things heat up in Lissbeg, can the old book Hanna finds buried in her own clifftop garden help Jazz? Summer at the Garden Café is a heart-warming story about secrets between four generations of women and the healing power of books, love and friendship.’ - Hachette

Long-term illness and the State Pension Project4:Layout 1

Question I’ve been on Illness Benefit for over a year. I don’t ever expect to be fit to return to work. As I’m now nearing pension age, will I be entitled to a full State Pension (Contributory)? Answer The State Pension (Contributory) is paid to people from the age of 66 who have enough social insurance contributions. To qualify, you will need to have paid 520 full-rate contributions, which is equivalent to 10 years. Illness Benefit is paid for a maximum of two years. It will end before that if you turn 66, when you may be eligible for a State Pension. You should apply for the State Pension three months before your 66th birthday. If your entitlement to Illness Benefit ends before you reach pension age at 66 and you are likely to be permanently incapable of work, you may qualify for Invalidity Pension. To get Invalidity Pension you must have at least 260 (or five years) paid PRSI contributions and 48 contributions paid or credited in the last complete tax year before the date of your claim. The last complete tax year is the year before your claim. For example, if you claim Invalidity Pension in 2017, the last complete tax year is 2016. Note that only PRSI paid in classes A, E and H currently count.
