Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 8th January will be the the documentary film Three Identical Strangers. Using archival footage, re-enacted scenes, and present-day interviews the film tells the extraordinary true story of three strangers who, in 1980 in New York, accidentally discover that

they are identical triplets, separated at birth. The 19-year-olds' joyous reunion catapults them to international fame, but it also unlocks an extraordinary and disturbing secret that goes beyond their own lives. Surreal and surprising, Three Identical Strangers effectively questions the nature of reality and identity. The following week on Tuesday 15th January the feature will be the National Geographic Documentary Free Solo. The film is a stunning, intimate and unflinching portrait of the free soloist climber Alex Honnold, as he prepares to achieve his lifelong dream: climbing the face of one the world's most famous rocks, the 3,000ft El Capitan in Yosemite National Park... without a rope. Celebrated as one of the greatest athletic feats of any kind, Honnold's climb set the ultimate standard: perfection or death. Succeeding in this challenge, Honnold enters his story in the annals of human achievement. FREE SOLO is both an edge-of-your seat thriller and an inspiring portrait of an athlete who exceeded our current understanding of human physical and mental potential. The result is a triumph of the human spirit.

Another superb effort was put into running the Stradbally Wren this year. A dedicated group took to the roads on the day in great weather conditions, remembering their friend and neighbour Ciarán Fitzgerald, and celebrating a revived local tradition. There was a wonderful show of support for the Wren and all monies raised will be equally divided between the local Adapt Resource Centre, the Simon Community, and the Irish Kidney Association. Thanks to a most generous local community the total amount raised was €2,000. Special thanks to all those who took part, the talented musicians, the singing bus driver, Pat Barry, Nick and staff at Tomásíns for the food, and Kennedy's Coaches for providing the bus. Presentations to the charities will follow.

Reeks District secures tourism grant to produce regional promotional map The Reeks District has secured match funding for a promotional map of the area to hand out to visitors. Funding was received from South Kerry Development Partnership CLG under the current RDP Leader 2014-2020 Programme (Rural Development Programme) The A2-sized map, which will fold down to a handy pamphlet size, will feature information on things to do in the region, from summiting Carrauntoohil to surfing on Inch Beach. It will be available to pick up for free at the Reeks District Visitor Centre in Killorglin and at various activity providers, restaurants, pubs and accommodation options around the region from March next year. The Reeks District is the new travel brand of the Mid Kerry Tourism Cluster, a not-for-profit membership organisation representing local businesses with an interest in tourism. Bronze, Silver and Gold level memberships are available for businesses – and those in the latter category will also receive a free listing on the map as part of their package. The map is the latest in a long line of promotional efforts by the Reeks District since its re-branding from Mid Kerry in early 2018. Over the last 12 months, the destination has launched a new website, refreshed the Killorglin visitor centre and applied a new marketing strategy to entice visitors to the region based around five main experience pillars, all beginning with B and each containing a hero experience that is unique to the region. The five pillars are: Boots (walking and hiking), Boards (board sports), Bikes (cycling), Boats (sailing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing), Body & Soul (pampering). The re-branding and associated promotional drive has quickly caught the eye of both visitors and international media, with a number of journalists visiting the region from high-level publications in Ireland, the UK and Germany over the last year. Articles published to date have an equivalent advertising value of more than €500,000.   8 West Kerry Live

Mid Kerry Tourism Cluster chair Jens Bachem said: “We are delighted to have received this funding. Having a strong promotional map that gives visitors a clear idea of a destination’s topography and suggestions of things to do is an essential part of tourism marketing. We look forward to producing the map for the benefit of our members and the Reeks District region as a whole.” Rural Development (Leader) Programme – Project Officer Sean de Buitlear said “SKDP are delighted to support this project through the RDP Leader Programme. This is an excellent initiative that will help showcase the range of activities that are available to visitors in the greater Mid Kerry region and will help extend the season for the tourism industry through encouraging visitors to engage in activities through the year as distinct from just the summer period.” Tourism-related businesses in the region wishing to be listed on the map can visit reeksdistrict.com/list or email Lee at lee@reeksdistrict.com to find out more.

€22 MILLION FUNDING FOR OVERSEAS DEVELOPMENT AID

With Christmas just gone, anyone who gave or received a pet for Christmas should remember that a pet is for life, and not just for the holiday period. A good Labrador pup will live for 10 to 14 years and some dogs can live to the ripe old age of 16, (as I can attest to).

The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D, has announced funding totalling €21.87m million for two UN agencies, the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organisation. The contribution includes an advance payment in respect of 2019 commitments to the World Food Programme of €19 million. This funding is part of a three year strategic partnership agreement with the World Food Programme. This funding will afford WFP the flexibility to target this funding in the most strategic, efficient and planned manner. It will provide life-saving assistance to communities facing food insecurity in countries such as Yemen, Syria and South Sudan. In addition to Ireland’s annual subscription to the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Minister Creed also announced funding of €2.87m for specific projects under the auspices of FAO, to promote food security and livelihood resilience among farmers and refugees in crisis regions, including in Cameroon, Chad, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; as well as projects to support climate smart agriculture, plant health and protection, and international food safety standards. Animal and plant pests and diseases are a huge threat to lives and livelihoods across the world. Ireland is a critical partner in enabling FAO to support vulnerable communities in preparing for, diagnosing and responding to these threats from fall armyworm and Rift Valley fever. Ireland is also an advocate supporter of livelihoods affected by conflict such as in the Lake Chad basin. Support for these FAO projects shows just how committed Ireland is to improving food security and nutrition, protecting plant and animal health, and action on climate change. UN World Food Programme (WFP) WFP is a United Nations organisation responsible for the delivery of food assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable people in the world partnering with other United Nations agencies, international organizations, nongovernmental organizations, civil society and the private sector to enable people, communities and countries to meet their own food needs. WFP is the largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide, and is funded exclusively from voluntary contributions. In addition to DAFM’s core funding of WFP, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade also provides funding to WFP for crisis programmes in specific countries and regions. UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) FAO is a United Nations organisation mandated to help eliminate hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, make agriculture, forestry and fisheries more productive and sustainable, enable inclusive and efficient agricultural and food systems and increase the resilience of livelihoods to threats and crises. And just on this note, there are again a bunch of TY and Fifth Year students heading to Cara Projects Rescue Centre and Orphanage in Ngong, Kenya in a couple of weeks. This is low-key and low impact, but it great work, by these young and committed students. They appear to do their fund-raising on their own, but much thanks should be given to Garvey’s Supervalu, who facilitate much of the fund-raising. If you see any of these fund raisers or spot a sponsorship card anywhere, dig deep and give them a few euro. ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANISATIONS RECEIVE €2,751,000 Funding of €2,751,000 was awarded to 108 animal welfare organisations throughout the country involved in protecting animal welfare. The payments will be made with immediate effect. We are very fortunate in Ireland in having a voluntary sector dedicated to animal welfare and the organisations in receipt of today’s funding, together with their staff and volunteers, provide great support and commitment to protecting surrendered, abandoned and at-risk animals. The major improvements in animal welfare that have taken place in recent years must be recalled. In particular, the reform of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013, which replaced legislation going back over a hundred years, was a particular milestone. It must be acknowledged that the workload for many of these organisations has increased over recent years on account of a number of factors, 10 West Kerry Live

Those considering getting one now should consider consider adopting an animal from one of the many reputable rescue organisations. For those focussed on sourcing a pet animal commercially he also advised buyers to heed the advice of the Irish Pet Advertising Advisory Group (IPAAG) and to make themselves fully aware of where their new pet has originated. Some of these rescued pets are re-homed in the UK, with DAFM providing over 4,000 free dog passports to animal welfare charities, at a value of over €40,000 to date in 2018. And remember, don’t buy from a “puppy-farm”, as you are only encouraging this system, by doing so. DAFM ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF 2018 SHEEP AND GOAT CENSUS The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) has announced that over 45,000 registered sheep and goat keepers received their Annual Sheep and/or Goat Census 2018 forms shortly. The return of census details is a legal requirement. Please ensure that these forms/ census are complete and returned to the Department before the month’s end. Failure to do so will result in the loss of your ANC payment, and there is no point in trying to redeem this next September. The census date was Monday 31 December and the closing date for receipt of completed 2018 census forms returned by post in the pre-addressed envelope provided is Thursday 31 January 2019. While the census return can be made by ordinary post, it should be noted that in the event of a dispute, the only acceptable proof of postage is a Registered Post receipt - a postal certificate or express post receipt is not acceptable. The census returns may also be submitted online via www.agfood.ie in which case the closing date is extended to Thursday 14 February 2019. The online system provides confirmation when a census submission has been completed successfully. Farmers not already registered for online services can do so by logging on to www.agfood.ie and clicking the option to register. As log in details are issued by post, farmers should allow sufficient time in advance of the closing date to receive their log on details. Online completion of the 2018 census will remain an option after the extended closing date for online returns (14 February 2019). However, it should be stressed that late submission of 2018 details may have implications for eligibility to certain DAFM schemes. Submission of a completed census is central in declaring that required stocking rates are being maintained and facilitates the drawing down of payments under schemes such as the Sheep Welfare Scheme, Basic Payment Scheme, Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme, AEOS, GLAS etc. Failure to return the census on time may impact payments under these schemes and also other future related payments from this Department. An information leaflet on the new rules relating to the National Sheep Identification System (NSIS), announced by the Minister in May this year, was included in the envelope with the Annual Sheep Census 2018 forms. EXTENSION OF EID TO ALL SHEEP Details of the changes relating to the extension of EID to all sheep are set out on the DAFM website under Animal Health & Welfare/ Animal Identification and Movement /Sheep /National Sheep Identification System / Extension of EID to all Sheep. Under the new rules relating to the National Sheep Identification System, with effect from 1 June 2019, all sheep moving from any holding must be identified electronically. Lambs aged under 12 months of age moving directly to slaughter from the holding of birth may be identified with a single electronic tag in the animal’s right ear. All other sheep must be identified with a full EID set of tags (i.e. an electronic tag bearing the individual number of the sheep in the right ear and a corresponding conventional tag bearing the same number in the left ear). Electronic bolus sets will also be acceptable. Generally, only electronic tags can be purchased for sheep since 1 October 2018. ANC PAYMENT - TOWNLANDS NO LONGER ELIGIBLE IN 2019 Some 700 townlands will no longer be eligible for the ANC scheme in 2019, having being eligible in 2018. These townlands are spread across the country. Where farmers hold land in these townlands and there is a negative financial impact, digressive phasing out payments will be in

place for 2019 and 2020 as set out in the relevant EU regulations. A rate of 80% of the 2007-2013 rates will be payable in 2019, and a rate of 20% in 2020. Approximately 750 farmers will be negatively impacted by this change. Leaving the phasing out payments aside, the financial impact will be under €1,000 for over half of the farmers impacted. ROAD SAFETY - MOTORING ADVICE Winter is truly here, but we haven’t experienced the harsh weather conditions of previous winters. But we should be prepared. Advice to the motoring public during snow and icy conditions. Ask yourself is your journey absolutely necessary? Can you use public transport – during these severe weather conditions public transport routes will be prioritised. If you must use the car, before you begin your journey consider the following: • Put a Hi-viz jacket, shovel, boots or wellingtons, extra clothing or a blanket and a flask in the boot of the car, (in case you do get stuck or have to abandon the car). • Check your tyres – pressure, tread depth (minimum 1.6mm) and condition. • Ensure ALL your windows are clean and free from snow; bring a scraper and de-icer with you. Snow left on the roof will become loose and can drop onto the windscreen during braking, thereby causing sudden and severe restriction to your vision. • Check your lights and indicators as falling snow reduces visibility. • Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged. • If your car has rear wheel drive the addition of extra weight in the boot (e.g. a bag of sand/cement etc) will help your wheels to grip. - Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Phoenix Paradiso John O'Connor

In the 1988 award-winning film, Cinema Paradiso, a young boy named Toto, in an Italian town is enthralled by the films he watches with a kind projectionist named Alfredo who fosters his love for the magic of the silver screen. In the film, which is set in the years after WW2, the audience is heard booing and kicking up a ruckus when kissing scenes have obviously been deleted - this under directions from the local priest. In another scene there is pandemonium as the patrons await the arrival of a film’s second reel which has been delayed in transit. In the Phoenix Cinema in Dingle several of the scenes from the story of Paradiso were mirrored on a regular basis – right down to the trickster in the balcony launching ‘missiles’ on the rabble below. The Phoenix had its own version of Alfredo and often uproar which included the loud banging of boots on the wooden floor would erupt when the second reel of a film would, in error, be spooled out first. The ensuing ruckus was a protest against the befuddlement of our young minds. Similarly, chaos would abound when the projectionist would be late changing the reels due to his late return from a local hostelry after a quick pint while the first reel was playing. Nearest to the screen were six rows of backless wooden benches (we called them stools) which were preferred by a varied collection of hardy boys. The rows were seldom wholly occupied and often the empty benches to the front were toppled in the dark, domino-like, resulting in a thunderous clatter followed by remonstrative roars from the innocent and furious finger-waving from the caretaker in the direction of the usual suspects. A solemn scene on celluloid would be turned into mayhem in a matter of seconds. Behind the stools and split by the aisle in the middle were several rows of straight-backed benches which housed the more sedate and discerning movie fans – some of whom had their seats marked by dint of long and historic usage. On the left side of the aisle, three rows back, and against the wall, Michael ‘Francie’ O’Sullivan (who would in the future own every seat in the house) laid claim to a spot from whence loud guffaws would be heard at 12 West Kerry Live

key moments during a performance. Jim Long also occupied left of aisle, outside end, where he could make a quick getaway if the film was not up to scratch. Jim never waited for the end of a film: he would leave nodding his head to a chorus of boos ten to fifteen minutes before the credits rolled. My favoured spot was right of the aisle, well back, where I soaked up the adventure of cowboy films like The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and the derring-do of Gregory Peck in The Guns of Navarone. The rear third of the cinema floor had twelve rows of soft seats which were dearer and had a separate entrance - and were boarded-off from the plebeian hoard to the front who had to settle for hard oak. These plush accommodations were occupied by a more refined set whose ranks would rarely be infiltrated by stray ways from the uncouth rabble to the front. The balcony overhead was home to a similar patronage as those directly underneath and included some who desired a more intimate cinema experience. We (my brothers and cronies) cared little about our place in the house; while we had our fifteen pennies (there were 240 pennies in a pound note then) for the admission fee we blocked out all the travails of the day and enjoyed the experience where the lines between fantasy and reality were blurred for a few hours each week. In the 1940s and 50s the Phoenix Cinema experience included a pre-show which was provided by two local musicians; a saxophone player and an accordionist who performed on the cinema stage for a half hour before the main event. This assured a modicum of order in the room while the gathering audience assembled a couple of nights a week and took their seats – on Thursdays for westerns and light-hearted fare and on Sundays for more serious drama. The cinema turned in to a ballroom on Saturday night for dancing – the wooden seats were removed and stored, and the softwood floor was taken up to reveal the hardwood dance floor on which the boys and girls lined up on opposite sides at the end of a set to await their chances next time round. The balcony was used as a retreat for successful pairings where lemonade was drunk and talk of love and the future began.

History In July 1921 the Dingle Picture House, which was in operation for several years and owned by the Houlihan family who also owned The Dingle Electric Light and Power Company, was burned down in a huge blaze which also destroyed adjoining businesses owned by Messrs Houlihan. The picture house was adjacent to the Mall River where a millwheel was situated to harness the power to serve the Houlihan industries in the corner of Dykegate Street and Avondale. As the 20th century progressed to using diesel generators the mill wheel became redundant and two large generators took over. At that time (of the cinema fire) several houses in Dingle had the electric light installed by the Houlihan power company and the lighting of the Dingle streets was going ahead. After reconstruction the picture house reopened as the Phoenix Cinema – named after the mythical bird that rose from the ashes. In those early years films

didn’t have sound – written captions appeared between scenes to guide the audience through the thread of the story unfolding on screen. In Aug. 1939, following an application to the district court for a dance hall licence, the Phoenix Ballroom with its sprung Canadian maple floor came into being and more than thirty years of dancing to bands like The Troubadours, Rhythm Aces, DJ and the Kerry Blues and The Vanguard Six would follow. This dual purpose of cinema and ballroom beginning in late 1939 followed more than a year of reconstruction of the Phoenix into the cinema we know today. During the rebuilding the townspeople were without their main source of entertainment and had to endure the long months of deprivation from the venue in Dykegate Lane which drew hundreds to its doors each week – one local man describes the feeling of loss aptly: ‘it was a lonesome old time’. But when the new Phoenix reopened in Oct 8. 1939 with a two-night run of Girl of the Golden West starring Janette McDonald and Nelson Eddie, the prolonged hiatus was forgotten, and all was as it should be again. The cinema, under the proprietorship of James and John Houlihan, was also used regularly for concerts and meetings pertaining to the social and business life of the town.

Carnegie Hall, a film made in 1947 - a story of opera and classical music - had the cinema audience in uproar caterwauling and exiting in droves. A patron who witnessed the spectacle said: ‘It was a ruckus the likes of which was never seen before, the commotion could not be quieted by the caretaker for love nor money’. At a concert in the cinema in aid of the St Vincent De Paul Society in 1955, the Very Rev. Canon Lyne, PP, thanked the new owner of the Phoenix, John A. Moore, for the use of the hall and mentioned the generosity of the Houlihan family, the previous owners, down through the years in giving the hall freely to community activities. The Houlihan regime had come to an end and in the following year (1956) a demolition sale for the Dingle Electric Light and Power Company was held in the cinema. Under the Moore regime the tradition of cinema, danc-

ing and concerts continued. Films were shown more often, and film posters were exhibited throughout the town in shop windows advertising the attractions for the coming month. Laid out before us were (thirty films, some showing for two nights) the expected treats of westerns, war films and assorted dramas along with a couple of duds.

Notable Events In Aug. 1961 the actress Siobhán McKenna who was filming The Playboy of the Western World at Inch presented prizes to the sea angling festival winners at a dance in the Phoenix. In Feb. 1963 at a ‘twist’ competition in the cinema, Dingle brother and sister dancing duo, Patrick and Mary Ellen Cronesberry, won first prize for their exuberant exhibition of the new dance craze of the day. In June 1969 the Western Ballroom opened in Dingle and thirty years of dancing at the Phoenix were coming to an end. One of the last dances, in 1970, included an appearance by Dana who sang her Eurovision winning song, All Kinds of Everything, to a crowd of 1,300 people on the night after her big win in Amsterdam. The gig was a considerable coup at the time for the organisers, the Dingle Regatta Committee.

before I discovered its wonders, spared no expense on the new-look Phoenix. The quality of the new projection and sound systems was hitech and there were soft seats for all. And while the Phoenix Nuovo (again mirroring the film Cinema Paradiso where the cinema was bought by a lottery-winning film fan and refurbished) was a welcome rebirth, the old cinema experience where off-screen stories and shenanigans were part of the ticket, was gone forever. However, some of the old cinema remains intact: the balcony is as it was first day as is the foyer with its terrazzo image of a rising Phoenix evoking memories of the past. The O’Sullivan family continue to keep the show on the road and have introduced new generations to the grand experience of the lights dimming, the curtains streaming open and the silence descending in expectation of the thrills to come. Michael F. O’Sullivan also founded a Film Club, in 1989, which has proved hugely successful and a valuable extension of the Phoenix programme

Phoenix Cinema which is one of a few independent cinemas remaining in Ireland, lives on and continues to stream film over our heads in a beam of light from the projection booth to the screen where the magic of film comes alive. The little boy, Toto, watching in the story of Paradiso - that was me watching the magic in my home town - it was my neighbour; it was the boy who ran home along Dykegate Lane after seeing a western at the ‘pictures’ slapping his rump to the beat of the William Tell overture while singing ‘to the dum, to the dum’, in the days when our hum-drum lives were often enriched by the wonder of film and the possibilities it portrayed in a time of innocence.

Unlike the cinema in the story of Cinema Paradiso which was eventually demolished, the

For twelve days during June and July in 1972, crowds flocked to see the Dingle Premiere of Ryan’s Daughter – with many hoping to catch a glimpse of their own seconds of fame as extras. In 1979 the Phoenix changed hands again and opened in July 13, 1980 under the ownership of Michael F. O’Sullivan with Kramer vs. Kramer. borne to the land. The three dead bodies of the poor sailors, who were drowned on the night of the 15th.

Edited by Ted Creedon

The first, a hardy weather-beaten old sailor, identified as James Hennessy, the master of the smack; the second, a middle-aged, fine, able-bodied, tall seaman; and the third, a fair-haired, good-looking youth, about 19.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE KERRY EVENING POST. Killorglin, 1st March, 1863. Dear Sir, - I am requested by the Secretary of the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society, to ask you to be kind enough to insert the enclosed in your next publication – I am, dear sir, yours respectfully, - Daniel Morrison, Honorary Agent. The letter, of which the following is a copy, was picked up in a bottle washed on shore:-

The bodies were removed to an out-house at Fermoyle, and securely arranged and , having been viewed by a jury for an inquest, were interred the next evening. The local pilot, Denis Lynch, is deserving of all praise; he did what he could. It is to be hoped that this extensive district of sea-board will not be neglected, as it is, and left without a coastguard station. About eight miles of sea-board, with extensive inland, and a large population, have only four over-worked police constable – no coastguards and no postoffice.

Av sa At Sea, October 19th, 1862. “My Dear Wife – Before you get these few lines I shall be in Heaven. Our ship, the ‘Glory’ of West Hartlepool, is just about foundering, the pumps both choked and John Hunter had his leg fractured by a sea breaking, and we have had nothing but gales of wind, and we are almost a wreck; but thank God we are resigned to our Heavenly Father’s will. My men are all made happy in the Saviour’s love. They were all crying for mercy, and they all found peace; the lad, John Hunter, was one of the brightest conversions I ever saw.

THE SEA SERPENT IN DINGLE BAY

(Astronomy Club of Kerry)

From: Cork Examiner, 21 August 1850. On Saturday last, as the Lord Nelson, one of the boats belonging to the Royal Irish Fishing Company, was passing through the Blasket Sound, what at first appeared to be a dense volume of fog was seen about a quarter of a mile ahead; but on nearing the object, it was discovered to be the head and neck of a monster of the serpent genus, whose tremendous appearance filled the minds of the sailors with indescribable terror.

After gazing for some moments at the boat and causing much commotion in the water by the violent undulations of its body and caudal vertebrae [tail], it finally emitted a tremendous eructation [belch], not unlike the snorting of a locomotive engine of the first class, and plunged into the depths of the ocean, leaving a long track of foam and wave to mark its course.

Beating the January Blues! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

associated with low mood and depression. Vitamin D supplementation is a first line therapy for Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), confirming the correlation between vitamin D status and mood disorders. The best approach to vitamin D is to get tested and get a proper dosage guide to supplementation. The RDA for vitamin D of 400 – 800iu falls short for most people and more so, for those with low mood, depression, SAD and anxiety. The correct dosage is unique to everyone and depends on present vitamin D status, body weight, gender and state of health. As Vitamin D is also involved in numerous body functions including immunity and bone health, this is a simple yet extremely effective measure to reduce risk of illness at any time of the year. Any episode of depression is exacerbated by alcohol, food binging and poor sleep, which is another reason why some people really feel the full brunt of the blues in January. Getting into a good routine soon after Christmas will help shorten a bout of blues. Focus on feeling healthy by cutting out as much crap food as possible, eat three home-cooked meals a day, have warm mineral baths before bed and give your liver a break from alcohol. This way, instead of feeling a total wreck, you will arrive at Spring, well rested, restored and prepared for the Season ahead. A very happy New Year to all my readers, may 2019 be filled with soups, salads and plenty vegetables! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health, Goat St., Dingle 066 9151360. Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com

The brown, withered pine needles on the sitting room floor are a stark reminder that the festive high is about to come crashing down! With only the Three Wise Men to come, the thought of what happens after January 6th can be foreboding and fill many people with a sense of dread. Listening to the radio and reading through media there is an expectation to get off your backside, give up sugar, alcohol, partying and carousing and prepare yourself for a complete turnaround which involves nibbling on microgreens and sipping watermelon juice! The first step to “beating the January blues” is to switch off from this current hype, after all, the same media frenzy had us pouring a glass of Baileys at 11am less than three weeks ago! While it is true, the start of a new year offers the perfect opportunity to begin again, to resolve to be a better human and selfimprove, the fear of change and the fear of failure is enough to blow the best of intentions in a very short time. The term “blues” is associated with a short period of depression, low mood and/or agitation that can affect anyone at any time during the year. Many people will feel low as the Christmas holidays end, family moving away again, maybe overspending and over-indulgence can be hard to take once the party is over – feeling a bit down post-Christmas is not unusual and will pass in a short time once normal routines return. The January Blues suggests that things will improve once Spring comes around. The stark difference between December’s festivities and the stillness of January is often the main trigger for the January Blues. Let us not forget that we are still in Winter, a quiet time in Nature with many plants and mammals still resting. It’s a reflective time for humans, ideal for making plans and preparing for the year ahead, but may not be favourable just yet for a sprint up Mt. Brandon! Food this time of year reflects the low position of Earth energy. From within the ground comes a wealth of root vegetables, dark greens and hardy cruciferous such as cabbage, cauliflower, brussels sprouts and kale. The long growing period of these vegetables allows them to absorb more minerals from the Earth which in turn keeps us grounded and nourished throughout the Winter season. Bones and meat cuts for slow cooking are best this time of year, again, reflecting the need for mineral-rich foods for sustenance throughout the darker, cooler days. Minerals such as calcium, magnesium, zinc, sodium and selenium are best extracted from food through longer cooking times making broths, soups and stews ideal to get the best out our meat, fish and vegetables during the Winter. When people relied on their own surroundings for nourishment, preserved foods such as dried nuts, wholegrains. fermented and cured meats and fish and fermented and pickled vegetables made up for any shortfall in fresh produce. Although our supermarkets are filled with produce now grown all year round, foods in season or preserved by traditional methods still offer the best nutrition to stave off Winter woes. Vitamin D levels are at their lowest during January as our Summer stores are surely depleted by now. Despite the glorious sunshine of last Summer we probably did not spend enough time exposed to the sun for enough vitamin D to see us through the Winter. Low vitamin D status is strongly 18 West Kerry Live

Seville Orange Curd and Seville Orange Marmalade Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School I hope everyone had a great Christmas. You probably have made some new year’s resolutions and are determined to keep them this year. If you have decided that you are going to cook more this year, hopefully you will try these recipes. The good thing about these recipes is that afterwards you will have a few pots stored away to do you for some time. Unfortunately, we have become so accustomed to getting whatever fruit and vegetables we want whenever we want without ever having to think of seasonality. Seville oranges are one of the few examples that you generally won’t find out of season. So why not treat yourself to this delicious bitter fruit and remember you don’t have much time as the season only lasts 2-3 weeks. So, make sure to head to your local fruit and vegetable supplier and order a few kilos of Seville oranges (you won’t be disappointed). They are way more bitter than other oranges but they are fabulous to cook with for marmalade, cakes, tarts or even sauces. I have included a recipe for an orange curd and marmalade. The orange curd can be used on cakes, biscuits and even toast. While the marmalade used to be a stable in most houses and probably would make a welcome return for your morning toast. Seville Orange Curd Ingredients 2 eggs and 2 yolks 300ml Seville orange juice (from about 4-5 oranges), strained and zested 150g unsalted butter 450g granulated sugar Method Place the eggs and egg yolks in a bowl. Put the juice, zest, butter and sugar in another bowl over a pot of simmering water, once the

butter has melted, mix the contents of the bowl then pour this over the eggs and egg yolks. Whisk these together and place the bowl back over the simmering water. Using a wooden spoon, continue to stir this for about 10 minutes. By cooking it slowly it will stop the egg from cooking too fast and becoming lumpy. Once the mixture has thickened and coats the spoon it should be ready. If you have a thermometer it should read 82ºC. Once ready pour this mixture into sterilised jars. This will keep for about four weeks and once opened it will last for about a week.

add the sugar stirring continuously - you can add the sugar in two or three stages allowing it to dissolve totally before adding the next. Once the sugar has totally dissolved bring the pot to a fast boil. Keep it boiling until it reaches setting point. An easy way to determine this is to have a couple of cold saucers in the fridge and simply pour a little on the saucer and place into the fridge and leave for a few minutes. Once you check this after a few minutes in the fridge it will determine if it is ready or if you want the marmalade thicker just leave to boil longer.

Once ready pour the marmalade into hot sterilised jars (simply put them and lids in an oven at 180º for about 10 minutes, remember to do this with all utensils used such as the ladle jug etc.)

Ingredients (Will make about 8 or 9 1lb jars) 2kg Seville oranges (about 18) 4 lemons 2kg light muscovado sugar 2kg white sugar Method Wash the oranges and lemons and put them in a large pot and add about 9 litres of water. If you do not have a large pot, divide the recipe by two and make the other batch the following week. Place a plate on top of the fruit to keep them submerged. Simmer this for about 3 hours to allow the fruit to soften. Following this, allow the pot and fruit to cool enough to remove the fruit, you can leave overnight if you want, but make sure to keep the liquid. For the next step remove the whole fruit and cut them in half and scoop out the flesh and put into the liquid which was used to cook the fruit. Slice the orange peel finely and put with the pips into muslin or a clean pillow case. At this stage put everything into a pot including the muslin cloth tied at the top and bring to the boil. Allow this to simmer until it has reduced to about one third. Next, warm the sugar in a bowl in the oven for about five minutes (this will help to speed up the process of setting the marmalade). A great evening was had recently in O'Flaherty's Bar at the Dingle GAA Senior Football Team Reunion for their Dingle Senior Football Team of 1993 that won the West Kerry League & Championship. At the time in 1993, Dingle GAA had not won the West Kerry Championship in over 12 years and winning it was very much the holy grail for everyone involved in the club. At the start of 1993 Paul Scanlon came in as Chairman and he was ably assisted by Tom Fitzgerald as Secretary, Fergus O’Flaherty as Treasurer and Paddy Browne as PRO. Mossy O’Donnell came in as Manager and appointed John Diony O’Connor as trainer and Derry Murphy as his selector. The scene was set and sure as they say the rest was history. In the West Kerry League Final played in Páirc an Ághasaigh against Annascaul at the end of October, Dingle won on a scoreline of Dingle 0-10 to 0-8 Annascaul. The West Kerry Championship Final of 1993 was played on Sunday 28th November in Páirc an Ághasaigh and the final score was Dingle 1-8 to 1-6 An Ghaeltacht, Dingle had won and it was very appropriate that the Dingle man who lifted Corn Thomáis Aghas that day was the Dingle Captain Thomas Ashe. Memories were swapped on the evening of the Reunion and for any of the players who’s memory was slipping a very detailed booklet of all the newspaper clippings of 1993 was given to everyone involved at the time. Many people start the new year with a resoluJANUARY 2019 tion...to get fitter, get in shape etc. There is always a big upsurge in January with a fall off mid to end of1 February due to injury or lack of moTUESDAY tivation. Some try and start off where they left WEDNESDAY 2 or start into a crazy high 10 off before Christmas, intensity exercise routine after being a couch THURSDAY 3 10 potato for years. Getting fit, losing weight is FRIDAY 4 10 about gradual progression. It is about avoiding injury and keeping motivated. For the majority SATURDAY 5 10 of people it is not about ‘’Pain is your friend ‘’ or ‘’no pain no gain’’. Also please forget about the fake instagram photos many try to compare themselves to. Mostly you are comparing yourself to somebody who has starved themselves down for months and is photo-shopped, maybe even chemically enhanced, all to look good for a few minutes. These people do not resemble their photos when you see them in the gym. The difference can be alarming, like looking at a totally different person. This is not what fitness and health should be about. Being fit and healthy is about empowering yourself to lead a more fruitful and successful life. When you think about it, if you were really living the dream, successful, enjoying life and truly happy in yourself, would your time be spent taking hourly photos for instagram in an effort to show everybody how happy and successful you are. It reminds me of a very rich and successful guy who came to me for treatment. Thirty years ago, way back, he used to drive a Porsche but I looked in shock as he pulled up in a 1999 Fiesta. He was home on holidays and had picked the car up for €500 to get himself around the place. Talking to him, I realized he had achieved such success that he was totally content in himself and did not care what other people thought about him any more. He did not need to pretend. I admired him. When starting training, take your time. Start out gently. It might mean walking for 20 mins 3 times a week. Vary your exercise routine to keep 26 West Kerry Live

a hard day, there is nothing wrong with going in and doing 80 % of your max for a training session. It is a way better than not going at all. This also gives your body a chance to recover and you will probably have a better workout CLOSED the next time.

-Taking 5 things to a more advanced level, 40 -mins 5 training 3 times per week split half and -half 5 between weights and cardio(20 mins + 20 mins each session) can get somebody in –phenomenal 5 shape. Also if you keep things

simple, you will reduce your chance of injury. Keep the weight training to basic functional exercises working the whole body. Cardio can be as simple as walking briskly on a treadmill. Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street Weight training tones and builds muscles, car& Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) dio helps burn fat. Building muscle demands lots of calories so can be a handy way of burning them. It is important to hold onto your muscle tissue while dieting and this is where weight training also helps. Starving yourself to lose weight is not the way to go. Low calorie diets not prescribed by a qualified nutritionist or dietician can be extremely unbalanced and dangerous. It takes a lot of knowledge to keep a low calorie diet nutrient dense enough to meet your RDAs((recommended daily allowances). If your diet is boring and tasteless, your life will be more miserable and your diet won’t last long. Try starting your diet by cutting out processed foods, cakes, sweets, bread, takeaways, alcohol and soft drinks. For many people this can drastically reduce their weekly calorie intake. Eat more fruit and veg, drink water. Try and make your foods tasty using, herbs, spices, lemon juice etc. Eat more nutrient dense foods. Keep it simple and stay focused on your own goals, rather than comparing yourself to others.

Drink Driving Offences Question I’ve heard the law around drink driving changed recently. What has changed? Answer Yes, the law around drink driving has changed. Since 26 October 2018, under the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act 2018, drivers who previously got 3 penalty points for certain drink driving offences will now be disqualified from driving for 3 months instead. It is an offence to drive in a public place if the level of alcohol in your blood, breath or urine is above the prescribed alcohol limit. There are different alcohol limits for new drivers and experienced drivers. New drivers are drivers with learner permits or drivers who have held a driving licence for 2 years or less, or people without a valid licence or permit. Drink driving offences can be dealt with through the administrative penalty system or the court system. However, the administrative penalty system only applies in certain cases, for example, where the driver has a

valid licence or permit and their alcohol intake is below a certain level. The recent legislation changes the additional penalty for experienced drivers found with the lowest levels of alcohol in their system. These levels are: a) 51mg to 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood b) 68mg to 107mg of alcohol per 100ml of urine c) 23mg to 35mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath Previously, experienced drivers found with these levels of alcohol would be fined €200, and get an additional penalty of 3 penalty points. Now, these drivers will get the same €200 fine, but will also be disqualified from driving for 3 months. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre West Kerry Live 33

Nano Nagle the life and the legacy le Deirdre Raftery foilsithe ag Irish Academic Press ‘This is the first biographical study of Nano Nagle, the foundress of the Presentation order of nuns, that positions her within Irish social history, and assesses her vast international legacy. Nano Nagle: the life and the legacy draws on archival materials from three continents, providing a compeling account of how one woman’s extraordinary life challenged social constraints and championed social justice and equality. Leading education historian, Deirdre Raftery, has produced not only a vital new biograpical study of an exceptional Irish woman, but also a study of how thousands of Irish women joined the Presentation order of nuns and taught in their schools all over the world. Within that is the story of the Irish female diaspora in Newfoundland, India, North America, England, Australia, Africa and the Philippines. Nano Nagle: the life and the legacy throws open a new window on an unknown aspect of Irish social history, while also demonstrating Ireland’s significant contribution to the global history of female education.’ - Irish Academic Press
