Dingle Film Club
Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 22nd January will be the historical period comedy-drama The Favourite. Starring Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel
Weisz and Mark Gatiss the film focuses on the relationship between two cousins vying to be court favourites of Queen Anne in the early 18th century, a time when England was at war with the French but nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating were thriving. The Favourite sees director Yorgos Lanthimos balancing a period setting against rich, timely subtext - and getting roundly stellar performances from his well-chosen stars. The following week on Tuesday 29th January the feature will be the French drama The Workshop (L'Atelier). The film follows Olivia, a well-known Parisian novelist who runs a writing workshop with a group of young people in La Ciotat, in the South of France. She is particularly intrigued by Antoine, a taciturn and not very sociable, young man. Antoine makes writing proposals that others consider shocking, and becomes the "black sheep" of the group. Olivia and Antoine seek escape from their daily lives by immersing themselves in an extreme right-wing ideology, and develop a relationship that is marked by attraction and repulsion. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News IS YOUR VEHICLE WINTER-READY? With the treat of a severe weather in the coming weeks, everyone is now being asked to take care. Cold weather, especially freezing conditions can be very challenging, especially so on roads and while driving. Being a rural community, even the townies are reliant on their motor vehicle, and must ensure that their car is running well and fit for purpose in these challenging conditions. Below are a few tips, provided by Road Safety Authority that will help you make it through the bad weather. These are necessary in extreme circumstances, but let’s not take any chances. A bit of Health & Safety in our daily lives will do us no harm and cost us very little.
under Tranche 12 which closed on 7 December 2018 and represent the fourth highest number of applications to date by tranche to date. The estimated value of all applications received in Tranche 12 is €30.5m. It was also announced that the extension of meal bins as an eligible investment for all sectors is included on the list of items eligible under TAMS II with immediate effect. The current tranche of TAMS II opened on 8 December and will close on 5 April 2019. Meal bins can be applied for now using the online application system. The TAMS II system of penalties for late submission of payment claims has also been revised with increased flexibility and graduated penalties introduced for late submission.
You should get your car serviced before winter sets in to make sure it is ready for the conditions which will undoubtedly arrive when least expected! There are some things you can do yourself:
Farmers are reminded that if they have an existing approval under TAMS to check the relevant dates on their approval letters and to ensure that payment claims are submitted within the relevant deadline. Claims can be submitted to the online system as soon as the approved work is completed to allow for the prompt payment of claims.
• Lights - Make sure all your indicators and headlamps are clean and working
The TAMS II Scheme continues to generate significant interest amongst farmers with over 17,800 approvals now issued to participants.
• Liquids - Make sure the water reservoir is up to the maximum mark and correctly mixed with anti-freeze. You may also need to top up your coolant and screen wash
Payment claims for completed approved works have been submitted and paid to over 7,000 participants. In value terms this has resulted in payments of over €103m issuing to date, over €5.6m of this issuing last December alone. Approvals will continue to issue and payment claims submitted paid on an ongoing basis during 2019.
• Oil - Check your dipstick and top up the oil if necessary. Look for signs of leakages on the ground under the car • Electrics - Check your dashboard before and after starting the engine. Listen for a weak battery and replace if necessary • Windscreen wipers - you should clean them regularly and replace them every 12 months • Tyres - Check your tyre treads and pressure, including the spare. While the minimum legal limit is 1.6mm, a minimum tread of 3mm is advised for winter driving • Safety Assist - Check your vehicle’s owner’s manual and find out if it has any safety assist technology e.g. ABS Be Prepared - Emergency equipment to have in your car includes High Visibility Vest, A hazard warning triangle, A torch with batteries - check it monthly, Tow rope, A shovel, Jump Leads, A Fuel Canister, Spare fuses and bulbs, De-icing equipment (Both for glass and door locks), First aid kit, Appropriate clothing and footwear in case you have to leave your vehicle, a charged mobile phone, Some simple supplies to sustain yourself (drink and food) When planning a journey in winter, you have to ask yourself if you really have to travel by car? You could delay your trip until the weather and road conditions improve. If you really have to travel by road, be prepared for severe conditions. Ensure your vehicle has a more than adequate supply of fuel for the journey. If possible, keep your fuel tank full in winter. Check your emergency equipment. Allow extra time and drive with caution. Let someone know your route and when you expect to arrive. Check to see if there are any problems on your intended route be-fore you leave. Listen to TV or radio bulletins and check the weather forecast. Remember that the best road conditions are likely to occur between 10am and 4pm. Remember the following serious hazards: • Snow and ice will always be worse in mountainous areas and higher ground – try to route around such places. There is information about road conditions and road temperatures on www.nratraffic.ie • Beware of high sided vehicles in strong winds, particularly when over-taking. If you are driving a high sided vehicle try to anticipate exposed sections of roadway where winds will be stronger •
Beware of fallen trees or other debris
• Leaving your vehicle is dangerous, wear a high visibility jacket and use your hazard lights to enable other traffic to avoid collision with your vehicle. However, on a motorway, it is safer to get out of your car and stand behind the safety barrier. Call for assistance immediately. MINISTER ANNOUNCES APPROVAL OF LATEST TAMS APPLICATIONS AND INCLUSION OF MEAL BINS IN TAMS FOR ALL SECTORS It was recently announced that over 2,090 TAMS applications have been approved and are readied for payment. These applications were received 10 West Kerry Live
Over 8,900 farmers have a TAMS II approval for which they have not yet submitted a payment claim. Approvals since Tranche 6 are being issued for 6 months for mobile equipment and 12 months for fixed investments. The Department is strongly encouraging all farmers with outstanding approvals to examine their approval letter and to be mindful of when their approval will expire. The penalty regime for the late submission of payment claims has been revised. The Department will be in direct contact with those impacted by this change in the coming weeks. In response to requests Meal Bins for all sectors are now included in the current Tranche closing on 5 April 2019. Tranche 14 – closing 5 July 2019, Tranche 15 – closing 4 October 2019 & Tranche 16 – closing 12 January 2020. MINISTER CREED ANNOUNCES THE OPENING OF YEAR 3 OF THE SHEEP WELFARE SCHEME The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D., announced that the third year of the Sheep Welfare Scheme will commence on the 2 February 2019. Existing participants in the scheme will be automatically enrolled in year 3 and will not need to take any action should they wish to remain in the scheme. The Sheep Welfare Scheme provides support to farmers for undertaking actions which make a positive contribution to flock welfare. Information packs containing the 2019 terms and conditions of the scheme along with Action Record books for 2019 will shortly be issuing from the Dept of Agriculture to all existing participants in the scheme. Applications for participation in year 3 of the Sheep Welfare Scheme are now being accepted from new entrants to sheep farming. For the purposes of the scheme, a new entrant to sheep farming is defined as an applicant who has applied for a new herd number from 1 January 2018 and prior to the 31 December 2018, or an applicant with an existing herd number who has not held or traded in sheep for a two-year period up to 31 October preceding the scheme year. All existing scheme applicants and eligible new entrants to the sheep sector are urged to return their forms by 1 February. CLEAN OCEANS INITIATIVE - 100% OF IRISH TRAWLERS TO RECOVER PLASTIC WASTE ON EVERY FISHING TRIP Minister for Agriculture, Food & the Marine, Michael Creed T.D. has announced Ireland's Clean Oceans Initiative and called for the participation of the entire Irish trawl fishing fleet in the scheme by 31st December 2019. His ambition is to have all Irish trawlers at every pier and every port actively participating in Ireland’s first co-ordinated initiative on land and at sea to collect, reduce and reuse marine litter and clean up our marine environment. Building on the very successful Fishing for Litter campaign the Minister has challenged BIM to work with the fishing industry to ensure participation of 100% of Irish trawlers in the Clean Oceans Initiative by the end of 2019. BIM will report to him quarterly on the progress being made to meet that target.
Fishermen have been living in harmony with the marine environment since the beginning of time, and share our concerns. They have a key role to play in recovering discarded plastics from the oceans. Our fishing vessels are towing nets through the waters around our coast on a daily basis and often find debris, including waste plastics, when the nets are hauled. Fishermen will be facilitated to bring this waste home from their fishing trip and are encouraged to recover as much plastic as possible from the seas around Ireland. Funding is being made available under Ireland’s European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) to support the new “Clean Oceans Initiative” to provide on-board storage facilities and on-shore infrastructure for environmentally friendly disposal of all plastics, waste, ghost fishing gear, etc. recovered at sea. The on-shore infrastructure will also be available to fishermen and aquaculture operators to dispose of unwanted fishing gear and other items with a plastics content. DAFM AGREEMENT WITH VETS

Scéal Eile ó Leabharlann An Daingin The Japanese have a word Tsonduko – the practise of acquiring a pile of books and never reading them. It’s a habit many bibliophiles are guilty of, we want to read all the books but there aren’t enough hours in the day and there are so many distractions. So, if you’ve fallen out of the habit, or would like to read more, here are some tips to help you get through that pile. 1. Schedule it. Decide that you’re going to take a few minutes out of your day for reading. Start small; ten minutes on your lunch break, or before you go to bed. You’ll soon Make it part of your routine and you’ll soon get into the habit it. 2. Take it with you. You’re probably reading more that you realise already. All those times you scroll mindlessly on your phone while standing in a queue or waiting for somebody; take a book with you and read that instead. If you commute by public transport, it’s the perfect time to pull out a book. 3. Read what you’re interested in. Unless you’re doing the Leaving Cert, there’s no book you have to read. Read books on subjects that interest you. If fiction isn’t your thing, try history or biography. If you want to read fluffy romances, read fluffy romances. If you’re struggling to find something you like, ask a librarian, we have lots of suggestions. 4. Set yourself a goal. Having something to work towards is great motivation. Set a target
number of books to read. But be realistic; nobody would expect you to run a marathon on the first go. You don’t have to read 52 books a year, try for one per month at first. 5. Join a book club. You’re more likely to stick to something when you have somebody to share it with and it’s fun to chat about books with friends. There’s lots of online book clubs to join from Emma Watson to Rick O’Shea. Or you could start you own, the library will even supply the books.
your TV at a certain time, put down your phone for an hour and read a book instead. The Ciorcal Comhrá is changing times. From next week, the Ciorcal Comhrá will meet on Wednesday mornings at 10.45am, beginning on Wednesday, 23rd January at 10.45am. So, if you would like the opportunity to talk about this, that and the other in Irish then please join us for a friendly, informal chat.
6. Give it up. If you’re not enjoying a book, it’s OK to stop reading it. Some books can be hard to get into it, but if you’re half way through and not enjoying it, then it’s just not the book for you. Put it down and find something else to read. There are too many books out there, to waste time trying to read something that you’re not enjoying. 7. Embrace technology. While books are a great way to combat screen fatigue, technology can make reading easier. E-readers can change the background, font and type size to make reading easier for people who struggle with small print. There’s even a font specially designed for people with dyslexia. Audio books are a great way of passing the time while you’re working or driving. Kerry Library provides free ebooks and audio books to all members through the Borrowbox App. 8. Switch off technology. All those times you spend switching through the same four apps on your phone or flicking through the TV channels trying to find something to watch, could be better spent with a book. ROAD SAFETY. My road safety message this time is to request all motorists to please use your vehicles indicators especially at roundabouts and at crossroads or when entering or exiting main thoroughfares. It can be both frustrating and dangerous when timely signals are not indicated to all other road users. Many accidents can be easily avoided by simple courtesy such as remembering to indicate on time. Míle Buíochas. SLÁN TAMALL.

Our Dingle correspondent writes as follows: -
‘The late storm blew with great violence in this part of the country, doing considerable damage in the town both to roofs and chimneys. On Friday as the Dingle trawlers were on their usual fishing grounds it came on to blow, and the wind soon increased to a gale. The boats at once made for shelter, and all were successful in getting into safe positions, except one – the “Spirit” – the property of the Rev. Mr. Jervois. The crew, four men, first cast anchor under Bull Head, about two miles from the mouth of the harbour, after having their mainsail swept away. In a short time the chain [anchor] snapped and she began to drift; and was noticed by the coast-guard on the look-out as being in great distress, running up the bay with bare poles [masts]. When they came opposite Minard castle they again cast anchor. The officer of the coast-guards at that station, having signalled to them if they required assistance, and received a signal in the affirmative, proceeded at once with his men to launch their boat. They pulled off to the trawler at the imminent risk of their lives and, in the teeth of an increasing gale, succeeded on bringing the men on shore. Some short time ago this daring officer and party saved the lives of the crews of two trawlers similarly caught, and subsequently of four fishermen from Aunascall. In the meantime the Trinity House steam tug, “Bishop”, was engaged by the owner to tow the trawler home [to Dingle], and found her off Minard, and brought her back safe; but melancholy to say a young man was swept overboard on the way home, and drowned in spite of every effort to save [him]. His name was Flaherty, the son of a small farmer near this town. SHIPWRECK AT BALLYDAVID From the Kerry Evening Post, January 18, 1865. On Saturday last a large brig [a sailing ship with two square-rigged masts] was seen by the men of the Ballydavid coastguard station coming on towards the land, and running freely before the wind. Her sails were reefed [reduced], and a flag of distress was flying, but no person was noticed on the deck, though she was closely examined with a glass [telescope].

Untouchable centres on the uplifting and unmissable story of unemployed African immigrant, Driss, who applies for a live-in carer job to get a signature to continue his social welfare payments. He unexpectedly gets the job and so begins a hilarious and heart-warming friendship with his new employer, wheelchair-bound millionaire Philippe. This is the biggest-grossing non-English language film of all time and is the perfect antidote to the dreary month of January. The French title of the film is "Intouchables". The film is in French with English subtitles. The night’s short film, Wave, is based on a man who wakes from a coma speaking a fully formed but unrecognisable language. Wave was winner of the Best Irish Short at the OFFline Film festival and won the IFTA for Best Live Action Short. Wave was longlisted in the Live Action Short Film category at the 90th Academy Awards while Wave’s Director, Benjamin Cleary, won the Best Live Action Short Oscar at the 88th Academy Awards for Stutterer. Beaufort Film Night is a non-profit community organisation founded by local film enthusiasts whose aim is to screen cultural English language and international language films, fostering an interest in and appreciation of these category of films, films which normally don’t get a general release screening in Kerry. Films screened at Beaufort Film Night will be carefully curated in order to appeal to a general audience. Beaufort Film Night is working in conjunction with Access Cinema, the Arts Council funded organisation which assists film clubs and film nights in Ireland with their screenings. Beaufort Film Night would like to thank The Inn Between Bar for providing a venue for this cultural and entertainment opportunity. Admission to the film is €7 which will go towards covering the motion picture licencing fee and the newly-purchased screen. Untouchable has a 15A Certificate. The Weird and Wonderful Food Trends for 2019
to see mushrooms exalted and given some good press for a change. Local foraged mushrooms and many of the dried exotic ones are packed with nutrition attributed with longevity, greater immunity and cancer-fighting properties. Welcome back old friend!
Irene Ní Fhlannúra
The perpetual drive to come up with new food ideas and ingredients to meet the demands of a more diverse society along with our innate curiosity will take us on many culinary adventures this year. However, closer to home and closer to Nature is where food will be at its best, and while it may not always be trendy, it will always be real!
If you have been keeping track of my predictions for Food Trends over the years you may well be wondering where the crickets and camel milk are, as promised. Disappointingly, I might have got a few things wrong, but the good news is that critter-crunchies, bug balls and wormaghetti could still end up in your local supermarket in 2019! The experts are again predicting that insects will make it to our shores, but perhaps with the Brexit fiasco, the camels will have to re-think their route! The Climate change debate is putting pressure on the livestock industry resulting in plant-based diets steadily becoming mainstream. Farmers raising animals for food are going to face further competition in the food industry as laboratory-raised meat becomes a reality and “faux” meat, also known as mock-meat, is offering meat-eaters an alternative that is not real meat, but looks and tastes like meat! And if this wasn’t weird enough, the creators of the “Impossible Burger” in the US are ready to flood the market with their version of “no-meat” meat that sizzles and bleeds like a real beef burger. It is made using an ingredient called haem (an iron-containing compound that is abundant in animal blood) and aims to mimic a meaty flavour, yet they say it is entirely plant-based! This current trend in fake meats will open a can of worms that we will regret, except of course, they are not real worms! Meanwhile, over in Japan, poo emoji ice-cream is all the rage and predictions are indicating that the brown swirl on a cone will catch on over here too! The “prettifying” of poo is yet another example of molly-coddling our children in a misjudged effort to protect them from harsh truths. Poo does not have googly eyes or a smile, it is not cute, and it certainly should not be so soft that it can form a swirl – check out the Bristol Stool Chart if you really want to know a good poo from a bad poo! Enough said! Cannabis oil hit new heights in 2018 and this trend is set to continue into this year. The non-psychoactive component of the hemp plant, CBD oil is available in Ireland as a food supplement, in liquid, capsules, tea infusions and vapour. While the subject warrants an entire written article to go through the science and evidence, it is worth noting that its rising popularity reflects the need for an alternative to drugs to ease chronic pain, inflammation, anxiety disorders and sleep problems afflicting a large percentage of the population. This year we will see CBD in beverages, biscuits, bread and many other foodstuffs including sweets, and though many people will find it beneficial, without addressing stress, diet and lifestyle many of these conditions will continue to be chronic issues and ultimately become less manageable. A weird trend emerging is the combining of two trends to make a new trend as we are seeing with peganism (paleo and vegan diet) – the paleo diet omits processed foods, refined foods and most grains reflecting the hunter-gatherer diet of our Palaeolithic ancestors while the vegan diet excludes all animal-derived foods including meat, fish, dairy, eggs, honey and supposedly, insects too. Fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds and legumes is the crux of the Pegan diet which all appears to be good foods but will more likely be too restrictive for most. The shift towards “plant to plate” eating will increase the consumption of more fibre and health-promoting nutrients from real food and may help us reconnect with the land and sea. Like fashion, food trends can be bordering on the ridiculous at the extreme end but pared back for the ordinary consumer, this movement towards eating more vegetables can only be a good thing for the people and the planet. Another combination is the Smoochie, a smoothie with hooch (alcohol) – this is a more worrying trend as the alcohol industry muscles in on the kale and avocado brigade and may well end up as a gateway to alcoholfuelled breakfast bars by the end of the year! Beware! Restaurants are predicting a big year for mushrooms with native and exotic varieties set to take centre stage on menus across Ireland. Much of our distrust of mushrooms probably comes from the old children’s storybooks in which the mushroom always housed the evil goblin or some other villain. Mushrooms have also been associated with smelly, damp fungus lurking in corners and hiding behind the wardrobe! It is exciting 18 West Kerry Live

Roast Butternut Squash and Blue Cheese and Sage Soup Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
600ml stock
The combination of butternut squash, blue cheese and sage works so well and can be incorporated into many different dishes, such as a risotto, a tart, a warm salad and that is why this soup is so delicious.
100g Blue Cheese
People always say that they find it hard to peel a butternut squash, but don’t let this turn you off from using them. To peel them put it on the chopping board and cut it in half, cut the top and bottom off it. Stand each piece upright, and use your knife to peel the tough skin off starting at the top and heading towards the board, keep repeating this until it is full peeled. Repeat with the bottom part (the larger part) and when finished cut it in half and scopp out the seeds. Serves 4
In a separate pan melt some butter once the butter has browned a little add the sage leaves. Allow them to cook for about two minutes. Remove and place on some kitchen paper.
1 tin coconut milk Rapeseed Oil Couple of sage leaves finely chopped
When serving crumble some blue cheese over it and then add the sage to the soup. Enjoy!!!
20g butter Salt and Pepper Method Preheat an oven to 180ºC. In a tray place the onion, garlic, celery and carrots and the butternut squash on a tray. Drizzle some oil over it and place some salt and pepper. Put this in the oven and allow this to roast for about 30 minutes. Once this has roasted and has browned take it out. All of the vegetables will have a developed a sweeter taste.
Ingredients 1 Red Onion sliced
At this stage remove the vegetables and add them to a pot, add the stock. Bring this to the simmer. After about 10 minutes add the coconut milk. Use a blender to bring the soup to a puree.
2 cloves of garlic chopped finely 1 Stick of celery finely sliced 2 Carrots cut into chunks 2 Butternut squash, peeled, flesh removes and cut up into chunks
Season well with salt and pepper.

There is some stiff opposition in the Dermot Earley senior men’s cup with Westmeath’s Rosemount back to defend their 2018 title against local sides An Daingean, Milltown Castlemaine and An Ghaeltacht while newcomers including Laois’s Portarlington and Éire Óg Inis of Clare will be attempting to leave their mark on this historic year. National Awards Programme Launched for Local Enterprises A national awards programme organised by the Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) to recognise the contribution of local enterprises to their regions around the country, was jointly launched in Kerry this week by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) and North, East and West Kerry Development (NEWKD). The awards programme is targeted at enterprises that have been set up with the support of the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance programme which is operated through the local development companies in conjunction with the Department of Social Protection. Enterprise Officer with SKDP Joanne Griffin said that the event is aimed at businesses set up under the scheme during both 2017 and 2018. “All such enterprises can enter the event and a number will be chosen to go forward to represent Kerry at the National Final” Joanne said. She added that it is an excellent opportunity for such businesses to potentially get recognition for their efforts at a national level. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that this programme is an excellent opportunity to recognise the vision and work of these small enterprises which are so crucial to the economies of rural areas such as Kerry. NEWKD CEO Eamon O’Reilly noted that Kerry enterprises were very successful at the national level in the previous competition and he is hopeful that the county will again enjoy such success. “I would encourage all eligible businesses to fill out the application form and take part in the event as it also is an excellent opportunity to network with similar businesses” Eamon added. The closing date for completed application forms is Friday, February 8th and application forms are available on the web at both www.southkerry. ie and www.newkd.net as well as at the reception desks in all development company offices. Qualifying enterprises can also obtain an application form through contacting their relevant Enterprise Officer. The Kerry awards ceremony will be held in Tralee on March 21st.

Why Mr.Reliable Ole Gunnar Solskjaer deserves a crack at the Man United job on a long-term basis.
The Fourth Official With the situation at the club worsening, and the relationship between Mourinho and many of his big-name players coming to a head it was inevitable that he was sacked as Manchester United manager. After picking up just six points from a possible eighteen in the clubs previous six Premier League games and losing 3-1 to bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield in a horrible performance that would prove to be his final match in charge, both parties went their separate ways on December 18th. As is usually the case with a mid-season departure United needed to turn to someone who understands the ethos and way of the football club while ensuring the best possible results on the field for the remainder of the season. And who better than perhaps Sir Alex Ferguson’s most trusted lieutenant Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Norwegian, a club legend was appointed caretaker manager on December 19th until the end of the 2018/19 season. Linking up with him was another familiar face, former assistant to Ferguson, Mike Phelan. In an interview with the club’s official Instagram page Solskjaer said that returning to the club where he obtained legendary status as a player, “it feels like coming home”, and that his main objective as caretaker manager would be to, “get the players enjoying their football”, and that he was looking forward to “seeing the supporters again.” A man who knows what’s required at one of the biggest clubs in the world and an indictment of where Mourinho went wrong, as it became quite clear in his final weeks in charge that his squad of players were anything but enjoying their football. Since he took charge Sojskjaer and his coaching staff of Phelan, Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick have collected a maximum of five wins from five in the Premier League, scoring fifteen goals and conceding only three. They also accounted for Reading quite comfortably winning two-nil in an FA Cup third round tie at Old Trafford. One could make the valid argument that these four Premier League matches have all been played against far inferior opposition in Cardiff, Huddersfield, Bournemouth and Newcastle. However, if you jog your memory back a little these were the exact type of games Mourinho was drawing against Southampton and Crystal Palace in his final month in charge. The last five games have been in complete contrast to the end Mourinho’s tenure in terms of results, this coupled with some swashbuckling performances from key players like Marcus Rashford who has been played through the middle under new manager Solskjaer, where he can use his pace and directness to trouble defenders, he will also gain some invaluable tips from Solskjaer on his finishing, perhaps the final part of his game that needs some work to take him to the very top as a striker. The most significant upturn in performance though has undoubtedly come from World Cup winning Frenchman, Paul Pogba, a man who would appear to have talent in absolute spades, but for whatever reason did not see eye to eye with his former coach Mourinho and as a result he simply did not perform under him. Since the new managers arrival Pogba has registered four goals and four assists in five Premier League games and turned in some outstanding performances. There seems to be a real feel good factor around the club and most importantly at Old Trafford about the team. And what prospects lie ahead for the rest of the 2018/19 season with a fourth round FA Cup tie away to arch rivals Arsenal something that Solskjaer was all too familiar with during his years at the club as a player when Arsenal were ‘the’ big rival for domestic silverware in a period that spanned ten years. There’s also the mouth-watering prospect of facing French powerhouse and big spending Paris Saint Germain over two legs with a place in the Champions League last eight at stake. Through good fortune a lot of United’s top rivals dropped points over the busy Christmas period leaving them just six points adrift of the Champions League spots with plenty of games left with which to achieve this. While I’m sure Solskjaer has been told it’s not a must, he would massively enhance his chances of receiving the job on a permanent basis were he to squeeze the club into the top four come May, and with seventeen league games left to play he has every chance of doing so.
at Cardiff, albeit with a limited bunch of players. United effectively had a free roll of the dice in appointing Solskjaer on a short-term basis and if things didn’t work out that they could break the bank for Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino in the summer. All well and good, but there seems to be a real connection between Solskjaer and his players at Manchester United. There’s also a feel-good factor, in my opinion not seen at the club since Ferguson was in charge. This week Pochettino when asked about the expectation to start winning trophies came out and said, “If I arrive at Tottenham and Daniel (Leavy, Spurs chairman) says you have £300m to spend, it is my responsibility to win.” He seems like a man not too happy with the lack of spending being done at his current club and may still be the front runner for the Manchester United job as a result. Yet if results and performances were to continue in the right vein for the current manager however, the club may have no choice but to give the job to the man who ‘late in May 1999, scored a goal in injury time.’

What’s Happening In The Hub? Good news to start the year - we received notification from Gas Networks Ireland that our application to their Innovation Fund was successful and they will provide part funding for the feasibility study for a community led anaerobic digester plant on the peninsula. Údarás na Gaeltachta under the LECo project www.leco.interreg-npa.eu are also part funding this project. This study will help us to better understand how bioenergy may form part the solution to achieve energy independence for the Dingle Peninsula. The tender document will be published on our website www.dinglehub.com within the next week for those interested in applying. We are very excited to host a KAOSPILOT Masterclass from Feb 27th to March 1st this year. The KAOSPILOT are a world class alternative business, design & leadership school from Denmark. In collaboration with the Dingle Hub & the Institute of Technology Tralee they will run, for the 1st time in the west of Ireland, their highly acclaimed 3 day masterclass to enable educators, facilitators and trainers to explore experiential ways of learning in order to inspire and facilitate creativity, engagement, innovation & risk in learning spaces & education and to support the drive for entrepreneurship, innovation, talent growth and further education. For further information and to book spaces on this masterclass visit www. dinglehub.com/events. We’ve been fortunate with the calm weather recently to help facilitate the deployment of the water sensor nodes as part of our Internet of Things (IoT) Water monitoring project so say hello to our installation team if you see them on the waters in Dingle, Ventry or Castlemaine Harbours; Milltown, Owenmore or Laune rivers or in Tralee Bay. The aim of this test and trial project, which is funded by EMFF funding under the Fisheries Local Area Development Scheme through BIM, is to showcase the potential of IoT technologies to help stimulate enterprise in the area of IoT. It will provide an automated monitoring system for conductivity, dissolved oxygen, pH, water temperature, nitrates and water levels. In parallel to the sensor deployment, we are developing a dashboard and a cloud based storage platform to capture the data, store the data, and make the data available for the benefit of community, aquaculture businesses and state organisations. This technology, when fully built, will pave the way for advance warning systems and can be reproduced inexpensively for deployment in other localities. Monday the 14th December 2018 saw the formal announcement of the ESB Networks Ambassadors in McCarthy’s Bar in Dingle. After a 3 month campaign 5 Ambassadors have been selected that will work with ESB Networks over the duration of the 3 year project. The Ambassadors are a diverse group of people from across the peninsula and have properties ranging
from a business that started in 1875 to more recent residential builds in the 2000s. With an expected investment of €350,000, the project will include a number of deep retrofits and the installation of Solar Panel PVs, Battery Management Systems, Electric Vehicle Chargers & Air Source Heat Pumps in the Ambassadors homes over the next 12 months. Solar Panel installation began on the 10th Jan and all 15 installations are expected to be complete by the end of the month. The coordinator recruitment process and curriculum development for the Local Training Initiative, funded and supported by Kerry Education and Training Board (KETB), to train Energy Coaches to support the public’s transition to a low carbon society are at an advanced stage and we will upload the details to our website once they are finalised in the coming weeks. We will then start advertising for participants and the planned start date for the course is the end of March.
Don’t forget our Energy Masterplan survey www.dinglehub.com/survey – it only takes five minutes and it is critical to understanding the energy needs of the Peninsula and how to develop sustainable, cost effective solutions for the future. I’m hoping you all have more time now that busy December has passed! If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1GB of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24-hour access and more. CLOSED 10 - 5 10 - 5 In Bed – A Pain In Reading 10 - 5 10 –risk 5of developing pain and dysfunction in the neck, upper back, and/or shoulders.
The increasing time we are spending glued to our phones or in front of a laptop with forward head posture is manifesting itself with a large increase in the incidence of neck and shoulder pain presenting at clinic. Even kids are suffering from it. Good posture, as it relates to the neck, is commonly considered when the ears are positioned directly above the shoulders with the chest open and shoulders back. This neutral position minimises the stress on the neck(cervical spine). Also it is important that the head is turned to full rotation left and right regularly in order to keep joints and muscles mobile and supple. Forward head posture occurs when the neck slants forward, placing the head further in front of the shoulders rather than directly above. This can lead to problems such as Increased stress on the cervical spine. As the head moves forward in poor posture, the cervical spine must support an increased amount of weight. Muscle overload. Forward head posture means muscles of the neck, shoulders and upper back have to continually overwork to counterbalance the pull of gravity of the forward head. As a result, muscles become more susceptible to painful strains and spasms. Hunched upper back. Forward head posture is often accompanied by forward shoulders and a rounded upper back, which can increase the 30 West Kerry Live
The above can lead to more severe manifestations if the forward head posture is maintained long term. These include: Muscle imbalances. Some muscles in the neck, upper back, shoulders, and chest can become shortened and tight, whereas others can become elongated and weak. Elevated risk for spinal degeneration. Extra stress on; the discs of the cervical spine’s, the facet joints, and vertebrae increases the risk of degenerative spinal issues, such as cervical degenerative disc disease and cervical osteoarthritis. It can also contribute to the development of bone spurs.
The Neck time to manifest. Often people will only get the message of how detrimental poor posture can be when they start suffering from neuropraxia (nerve compression/ pain, tingling, numbness running down yours arms, worse at night). This condition can be quiet challenging to treat. Physiotherapy treatment can still be very successful if it is caught in the early stages.

There is an increased risk of development of shoulder bursitis, specifically subacromial bursitis Reduced mobility. With increased stiffness in the muscles and/or joints, the neck’s range of motion becomes decreased. Nerve pain. Spinal degeneration and muscle spasm in the neck can lead to nerve compression resulting in neurogenic pain. This pain can be severely debilitating. Treatment of the above may consist of deep tissue massage, mobilizations and posture correction exercises. Severe cases of disc degen- Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) eration and/or nerve compression may require surgery. Income Tax 2019 Question I’m a PAYE worker. What income tax will I pay in 2019? Answer The amount of tax that you have to pay depends on your personal circumstances. Tax is charged as a percentage of your income. The percentage that you pay depends on your income. The first part of your income, up to a certain amount, is taxed at 20%. This is known as
the standard rate of tax and the amount that it applies to is known as the standard rate tax band. If you have income above the standard rate tax band, it is taxed at the higher rate of tax, which is 40%. The amount that you can earn before you start to pay the higher rate of tax is known as your standard rate cut-off point. For 2019, the standard rate of tax remains at 20%, but the standard rate tax bands have been increased as follows:

Movie Review Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse
Pierce Hoare Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse is a 2018 animated comic book movie by Sony Animations. The film stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales and Jake Johnson as one of many Spider-men in the movie. The plot of Into the Spider-verse revolves around Miles Morales, who goes through the usual spider-man origin story of the radioactive spider and meets Peter Parker, the main spiderman. Through an accident involving a giant green goblin and quantum physics, different versions of Spider-men/women are brought into Miles’ universe. He teams up with Peter B Parker, Spider-Noir, Spider-Gwen, Peni Parker and Peter Porker to try and return them to their respective universes. Each different version of the web crawler is just as enjoyable as the next, with my favourite being the ridiculously dark Spider-Noir, voiced by Nicholas Cage. The comedy in the movie is hilarious. It knows that there have been three other film versions of Spider-man before it since 2000 and uses that to its advantage by giving us the opposite of the usual Spider-man with Peter B Parker and subverts our expectations of some villains. Another notable aspect of the film is the beautiful art style, which looks as though it was taken straight from the pages of an actual comic at points. I heard that the film’s animation budget was quite low so to get around that they reduced the frames of animation to 12 fps for certains scenes, which I think adds to the comic-book feel of the movie. The soundtrack of Into the Spider-verse was another treat as it includes songs from Post Malone and Jaden Smith, which fit the tone perfectly. The bright colours in the movie were wonderful to look at, especially in the parts near the end and I would recommend seeing it in cinema. I hope Sony Animations make more films like this and try to correct themselves after the questionable mess that was the Emoji Movie. I look forward to the sequel and pray they put more of the 1960’s cartoon Spider-man in it.

A Radical History of the World le
Neil Faulkner foilsithe ag Pluto Press ‘History is a weapon. The powerful have their version of events, the people have another. And if we understand how the past was forged, we arm ourselves to change the future. This is a history of struggle, revolution and social change: of hominids, hunters and herders; of emperors and slaves; of patriarchs and women; of rich and poor; of dictators and revolutionaries. From the ancient empires of Persia and Rome to the Russian Revolution, the Vietnam War, and the 2008 Crash, this is a history of greed and violence, but also of solidarity and resistance. Many times in the past, a different society became an absolute necessity. Humans have always struggled to create a better life. This history proves that we, the many, have the power to change the world.’ - Pluto Press An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis
