There are 3 main concerts this year. In Dún Chaoin on Thursday (21st Feb) at 8pm there is a special recital by Chicago fiddle player and composer Liz Carroll. Friday night (22nd Feb), 8pm in Halla na Feothanaí, features Wendy MacIsaac and Mary Jane Lamond from Cape Breton, Síle, Anna and Claire Friel from Glasgow, Liz Carroll from Chicago, Laoise Kelly, Seán Garvey, Mary MacNamara and more. On Saturday night (23rd) , again in Halla na Feothanaí at 8pm, the concert features Steve Cooney, Tim Edey, Tim Dennehy, Dermot McLaughlin, Rosie McKenzie (Cape Breton), Nell Ní Chróinín and Margaret Stewart and Ingrid Henderson from Scotland amongst others. Tickets for the concerts (€20/15/12) will be for sale at the official opening and at the Scoil Cheoil informtion desk in Ceann Sibéal Hotel. They are available on eventbrite.ie and are for sale in Siopa an Bhuailtín in Baile an Fheirtéaraigh. Any remaining tickets will be available on the door at the venues. Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 19th February when the feature will be the American crime drama The

Mule. The film is directed by and stars Clint Eastwood. He plays Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive. Easy enough, but, unbeknownst to Earl, he's just signed on as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. He does well -- so well, in fact, that his cargo increases exponentially, and Earl is assigned a handler. But he isn't the only one keeping tabs on Earl; the mysterious new drug mule has also hit the radar of a hard-charging DEA agent. And even as his money problems become a thing of the past, Earl's past mistakes start to weigh heavily on him. The following week on Tuesday 26th February the feature will be the Oscar nominated Green Book. The film is a comedy-drama inspired by the true story of a tour of the Deep South between African-American classical and jazz pianist Don Shirley and Tony Vallelonga, an Italian-American bouncer who served as Shirley's driver and bodyguard. The pair must rely on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were then safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger-as well as unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime. 4 West Kerry Live

A gala awards ceremony will be held in the InterContinental in Dublin on February 19 and it will be attended by 200 representatives from the hospitality industry, food writers and food organisations and with special guest, chef Neven Maguire. The awards celebrate the finest Irish food producers and those who take special pride in serving the best breakfasts and brunches in Ireland. Wishing both businesses the very best of luck!

Farming News SPRING ROTATION PLAN FOR ALL ENTERPRISES Farmers in the most of the country can spread chemical fertiliser and slurry from Friday 1st February. With so much grass on farms, the trailing shoe is a good option for farmers to spread slurry on covers up to 1,200 kgDM/ha (9cm). In wetter/colder weather, the chemical formulation of a product like urea is a lot more resilient/stable than a product like CAN. Spreading slurry and fertiliser soon can reduce the workload during the calving period. The contractor is also a viable option to use for fertiliser and slurry spreading where workload is an issue. In the case of Spring Grazing make sure to meet residuals of 3.5– 4cm to have quality grass in the second rotation. Grazing out paddocks well will also maximise growth rates as dead/old material will be removed from the sward Walk the farm at the beginning of each week. Carry out an average farm cover and assess ground conditions in each paddock. Put a plan in place for the week and exe-cute it. By walking the farm, good decisions can be made early and grazing management improves as a result. Use a strip wire and a backfence to protect regrowths. Hang up a farm map in the dairy/ office and make sure to record decisions, grass covers, fertiliser etc. Meeting 30% grazed in February will be very challenging for farmers this year with large grass supply on farms. Make sure to:

tagging system, significantly reduce the record keeping requirements for sheep farmers moving sheep to livestock marts, slaughter plants and export assembly centres and provide a more accurate and robust sheep traceability system in support of animal health and public health objectives and thus support the further development and sustainability of the sheep industry. Apparently this move to full EID will protect Ireland’s reputation as a source of safe and secure food and animals and will put Ireland’s sheep traceability system on a par with other major competitor exporting countries in maintaining and securing new international markets for Irish sheep meat. BEEF ENVIRONMENTAL EFFICIENCY PILOT (BEEP) The objectives of the scheme are to further increase economic and environmental efficiency in the suckler herd through better quality data on herd performance, supporting decision making on farm. The Pilot will be open to all suckler beef farmers who commit to completing the mandatory action required within the duration of the Pilot. Action: weigh unweaned calf and their dam and submitting weight records to ICBF Payment will be on beef breed (dam and sire) animals born in the herd between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019. Application window for inclusion in the pilot is 4 February and 22 February 2019.

• a

Graze low covers 1st (600-1000 kgDM/ha)- livestock will graze larger area per day in lower covers

Minimise meal feeding and silage feeding if possible – this will increase livestock's grass intake

All Calves being submitted for weighing must have been born between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019.

Use a strip wire and backfence, so that grazed areas can recover for the second rotation

Unweaned Live Calf and Dam must be weighed on the applicant’s holding, individually and on the same day.

Turn out yearlings on the grazing platform in early Feb

If conditions are wet, make an effort to let livestock out by day

Only scales registered in accordance with the Pilot Terms and conditions may be used.

Weights must be submitted between 8 March 2019 and 1 November 2019

Daily Allocations: Farmers at grass are currently feeding: •

7 kgDM Grass

3 kgDM Concentrates & 2 kgDM Silage

Requirments include:

Key Dates •

Eligible Animals: Beef breed animals born between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019

Applications: 4 February to 22 February 2019

DAIRY: Turn out cows as they calve to low covers of 600– 900 kgDM/ha (6-8 cm). Avoid feeding silage- feed grass plus meal alone. If weather conditions turn wet, on-off graze so that livestock still get their full grass allocation for the day (2 blocks of 3 hrs) (prioritise grazing ground 1st to have regrowth by the 2nd rotation)

Submission of weights: 8 March to 1 November 2019

Payments will be made in December 2019.

DRYSTOCK: Turn out yearling heifers and young stock early to low covers. Minimise supplementation levels and prioritise quality grass. Target early turnout for cows and calves near a shed.

Suckler farmers must have one or more beef breed animals born in the herd between 1 July 2018 – 30 June 2019 . Payment will only be made on the number of unweaned calves born on the holding between 1 July 2018 and 30 June 2019 and where the weights of both the live calf and their live dams have been recorded and submitted to ICBF. Payment will be no more than €40 per eligible calf. Yes, an online facility will be available to apply for the BEEP. Farmers can apply themselves using the online portal at www.agfood.ie. To reduce errors and speed up the processing of applications, we encourage applicants to apply online through the agfood.ie portal. Paper application forms are available from the Beef Schemes section in Portlaoise. The application period is from 4 February to 22 February 2019. There is an overall budget of €20 Million set for the programme. In the event of oversubscription, there may be a linear reduction to each payment. Farmers that are not in BDGP can apply for BEEP.

Many farms have enough grass supply on farms to feed grass and concentrates alone (out day and night if ground permits). This is only suitable and applicable on higher ground, or where ground conditions permit it.

In the case of a 45ha Dairy Farm, 15ha should be grazed in Feb, 30ha to be grazed by 17th March, and be ready to start of 2nd round early April. ONCE OFF PAYMENTS EID TAGS The first tranche of payments under the EID sheep tag subsidy scheme has began. Payments totalling €365,000 have now issued to 5,300 sheep keepers. Further payments will issue as more farmers make their first purchase of tags during the year. The new scheme, , sees a maximum amount of up to €100 payable for the first order for EID tags purchased by farmers after 01 October 2018. In order to ensure the simplification of the process, sheep farmers do not need to make an application for this payment. Rather, the Department will calculate the amount due to each farmer under the scheme and will issue payments on a quarterly basis as farmers make qualifying purchases of tags. The EID sheep tag subsidy scheme is designed to assist sheep keepers with the transition to the introduction of mandatory EID of all sheep with effect from 1 June 2019. The introduction of mandatory EID as previously announced by the Minister is required as the current national sheep identification system is widely acknowledged to be very complex, with an over reliance on the manual transcription of individual sheep identification numbers. The bull used must be of a beef breed. The sire (bull) does not have to be a purebred/pedigree bull This is a one year pilot for 2019. There is no connection between the reference number of animals for BDGP and BEEP. You will be paid extra for twins provided weights are recorded for cow and both calves. Payments will commence in Dec 2019 and applicants will be paid provided all weighings have been submitted and recorded correctly. The animals must be weighed on your holding. Animals must be weighed individually and on the same day. All details relating to scales, weighing

procedure, and recording weights are in the T&Cs. There are two options available to herd-owners for the recording of weight data as part of BEEP. These are: (i) a Rental model, whereby participants rent scales from an approved field service agent to undertake the BEEP weight recording process, or (ii) Owned, borrowed or using a third party service providers’ scales. This is where a farmer can use their own scales or one belonging to a third party. These scales will have to be pre-registered with ICBF as per the T & C’s. Details of the rental model locations will be made available on www.icbf.com. The correct procedure for weighing cows and calves is set out in the T&C’s, which must be followed. ICBF will send each farmer the most suitable timeframe, based on calving pattern of each herd. To enter the right weight, the preferred method will be electronic options including smartphone apps, ICBF webpage and farm software. An official paper form will also be available from ICBF. Weights must be submitted between 008 March 2019 and 01 November 2019. Inspections in relation to BEEP will be undertaken. This is to ensure that data submitted under the pilot is accurate.

On Tuesday 12 Feb, during Jacks’ Coastguard Restaurant's regular Tuesday evening Bingo sessions, a cheque for €2,500 was presented to Cromane Community Council by Brian Keary, as a welcome and very generous contribution towards funding their community plan. The Community Council would like to say a massive thank you to Brian of Jack's, and of course, all those of you that support the Bingo evenings, for without you all, we would not be able to avail of this very kind donation. Brian and Jack's have continually supported all local Cromane groups, and his Bingo sessions now add to his support, and the benefits to the community are greatly appreciated. Well done all, and thank you Brian! This year sees Cromane start the implementation of their new plan to improve the local area, part of which will see them joining Tidy Towns, introducing some new walks, as well as reviving some of the old traditions and the historical culture of the fishing community, This generous contribution will be a great help! What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Our main focus at the moment is still the Dingle Peninsula Energy Masterplan (EMP). It’s now the turn of the commercial sector and we are appealing to all businesses on the Peninsula to help us build an accurate picture of our current energy requirements. Increasing energy efficiency has been proven to bring significant cost savings for businesses and these savings will only increase over time as traditional energy sources become more expensive. Contributing towards the EMP is a great way to start building an understanding of your business needs for the future. Please take 5 minutes to complete at www. dinglehub.com/survey. It is especially important that we understand the requirements of those of you operating seasonal businesses – there is a big difference between the energy demand here in the summer than at this time of the year and we need to plan effectively for this! Many many thanks to all of you who have already shared your home energy usage information and those of you who helped to gather this information. Your data is now being processed as part of the EMP but the domestic survey will remain open for those of you who still wish to contribute to help us track our progress over time. Dea scéal maidir le “Gráinne”, an scánnan a rinne ár mbeochainteoirí óige. We submitted the film for the Young Animator of the Year (YAOTY) award and it film has been selected to screen as part of our YAOTY Animation Dingle 2019 Programme. The YAOTY screenings will take place on Saturday the 23th of March 2019 in The Beehive Theatre. The winning film will be selected by a Disney Executive and announced at the screening. Go n-éirí go geal libh! We’re also really looking forward to working with people and businesses in the creative sphere to better understand their needs and to develop the right supports to make a difference. We are kicking off with a series of 3 x day-long workshops to provide business strategy development tools to creative businesses and individuals. The workshop is aimed at people working in the creative sphere. If you're already making some income from your artistic/creative work and are enthusiastic to grow this, then this workshop is for you! The first workshop will take place on Tuesday 5th March, additional dates to be confirmed. There will also be follow-on one-to-one mentoring supports. Given the high level of interest in this workshop, we'd like to ensure that the people who will benefit most can avail of the workshop. For this reason, we'd like you to send us a 100-word summary of why you'd like to take part in the workshop and why you are an ideal participant. Total Cost for all 3 workshops & followon mentoring is €100. Workshops are subsidised by the Kerry County Council Town and Village Renewal Scheme and run in association with Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub. Contact maggie@dinglehub.com to apply before the deadline of Monday 25th Feb. 4p.m. If you’re working from Dingle and are in need of office space, the Hub offers hot desks, dedicated desks and private offices with access to 1GB of eir Fibre Broadband, a dedicated telephone landline, free parking, 24hour access and more. Everyday is a School Day, Even on Holiday! Irene Ní Fhlannúra The hills of the Aosta Valley in the Italian Alps were more than alive last week when I was fortunate enough to holiday there with my family. It was here that I came across a local liquor called “Genepi” – consumed just for research and medicinal use (of course). Our ski instructor who works the ski season for eight months of the year, takes a break in the Summer to harvest the tiny Alpine flowers during July and August needed to make this drink. He told me that it is a local tonic used for a range of conditions including fatigue, respiratory conditions and digestion problems. Naturally, my curiosity was peaked and as soon as I got back to our hotel and connected to wifi, it didn’t take long to find out that the flower he was talking about was a lesser-known wormwood, Artemisa Umbelliformis, belonging to the same botanical family that provides us with mugworth, absinthe and wild sage. Growing at altitudes of 2000m and above, the little Alpine Wormwood has been traditionally consumed as a pick-me-up for weary climbers (and skiers) and the brew inhaled to clear sinuses and open the respiratory airways at such high altitudes. Scientific literature about Genepi is scattered and studies of these Alpine wormwoods and their pharmacological action are lacking. Like many of Nature’s remedies, its medicinal use to treat conditions that are specific to the area in which it grows have been passed on for generations and is proof enough for the locals to keep both the tradition and plant species alive. There is a rivalry between Italy and France as to which country produces the best Genepi, or Genepy as it is known in the Savoy region of French Alps. Both regions share similar altitudes and climates which is perfect for growing and harvesting the plants. In recent years, foraging wild genepi flowers is controlled to protect the mountain flora and cultivated genepi flowers are used for all commercial production of the liquor. The traditional preparation for Genepi, known as the “rule of four” involved steeping 40 dried flower tops with 40g sugar in one litre of 40% proof alcohol (eg. Vodka or grain alcohol) for 40 days. The origin of sticking herbs into alcohol is one of the oldest forms of producing a liquor, as it will either improve its flavour or mask its flaws. Either way, alcohol has proven to be an ideal solution to concentrate the active components of medicinal plants and preserve them for use all year round. Many of our modern medicines are in solutions of alcohol for its antiseptic, disinfectant and analgesic properties. In herbal medicine dried wormwood leaves are used as an infusion or tincture (steeped in alcohol) to treat digestive problems, to stimulate appetite, for parasites such as pinworms (as the name suggests), to treat upset stomach, gall bladder disease and intestinal spasms. The varieties of wormwood differ depending on geography but they do share some common traits no matter where they are grown. In 1740, notorious herbalist Nicholas Culpeper, wrote of another wormwood species, Artemisa Vulgaris, which grows well in UK and Ireland, commonly known as mugworth: “a slight infusion is excellent for all disorders of the stomach, prevents

sickness after meals, creates an appetite and is admirable against surfeits (gluttony). The infusion if drank morning and evening helps hysterics, obstruction of the spleen and weakness in the stomach”. Nowadays, mugworth is used for similar conditions, as well as mild depression, irregular periods and calming the nervous system – possibly reflecting our changing needs. The hallucinogenic liquor, Absinthe, a drink favoured by some of the greatest impressionists and writers of the early 20th Century, is also derived from wormwood – Artemisa Absinthum. Degas, Van Gogh, Picasso and Hemingway were reputedly very fond of the stuff and had to seek it illegally when it was banned in Europe on the eve of the first World War. The psychoactive component, Thujone, is found in the oil of wormwood and is more potent through distillation in alcohol. This method of preparation moved away from tradition which together with excessive consumption led to many of the ill-effects associated with the drink. High levels of Thujone can result in seizures, hallucinations and mania and from where the term “Absinthe-minded” came from originally, now replaced with “absent”. Absinthe is back on the market now with a much lower concentration of Thujone which is considered safe to drink. Vermouth, is also a variation of wormwood in alcohol, inspired by the German word for wormwood – Wermut. Its dry, bitter taste is more suggestive of a medicinal tonic than a cocktail yet. It is this bitterness that stimulates the salivary juices making it an effective aperitif. As Spring emerges and gives way to new growth, it is worth looking at what Nature is revealing to us in our own surroundings. The dandelions, nettles and other wild plants which are prolific in our environment are useful and appropriate to our native conditions - just as Genepi was for me last week in the Alps, providing me with energy, deeper inhalations and the stomach to ski down a very high mountain! 500ml chicken stock

Paella

pinch of saffron soaked in 1 tbsp. hot water

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

150g mussels, scrubbed handful of prawns (peeled)

What is paella?

handful of flat-leaf parsley to garnish

A beautiful a rice dish from Spain. It may include seafood, chicken, rabbit or a combination depending where it is cooked in Spain. Learn to cook this and you will find that it will be perfect anytime you have a crowd to feed. You will find the rice easily enough in most shops.

½ lemon, cut into wedges

Talk to anyone who has been to Spain and they will always mention how tasty the food is. Spanish food is simple but they concentrate on the ingredients and then do very little with them to produce beautiful dishes. If you would like to learn to cook a few Spanish dishes why not join us at Dingle Cookery School for our Friday Spanish Supper club on Friday 15th March. Serves 6 Ingredients 40ml olive oil 200g monkfish or other fish, cut into chunks 1 onion, finely diced

Method Heat some oil in paella or other wide, thin-based pan and add the monkfish. Sauté for five minutes until slightly browned, then remove and set aside. Turn down the heat and add the diced onion and sweat gently for about two minutes, then add the garlic and continue to cook for a further two minutes. Add the chorizo and slowly cook, then stir in the paprika and cook for one minute. Tip in the tomatoes and wine, turn up the heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Stir in the rice to coat well so it forms an even layer, then add 400ml of the stock along with the saffron and soaking water. Simmer for 10 minutes then arrange the monkfish, mussels and prawns on the top of the dish, pushing them well into the rice but otherwise not disturbing it. Cook for about eight minutes – if the dish looks very dry before the rice has cooked completely then add the rest of the stock, bearing in mind it shouldn't be at all soupy. Cover the dish with foil and take off the heat. Allow to rest for 10 minutes. Enjoy!!!

2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 100g chorizo 1 tsp. smoked paprika 150g chopped tomatoes 50ml dry white wine 200g Calasparra or other short-grain paella rice

The Wedding RingAn Old Tradition The ring is the most enduring symbol of marriage. Its pursuit and eventual purchase play a major part in run up to a wedding, and during the marriage ceremony itself the exchange of rings is the moment around which everything else revolves. The ancient Egyptians began the practice using rings made from twisted reeds and rushes from the banks of the Nile. With no beginning or end the ring was seen as the symbol of eternity and the man placed it over his wife’s finger as a sign that he trusted her to keep a good home. The third finger was chosen because of the belief that a vein ran directly from that finger to the heart, the Romans later called it the vena amoris, the vein of love. The Romans themselves used iron to make rings while later gold became the preferred choice. The wedding ring became the opulent expression of love with the addition of gemstones in Medieval times, while later in Renaissance Italy highly ornate silver bands were the order of the day. In the eighteenth century, the distinguished man of letters Samuel Johnson referred to the wedding ring as “a circular instrument placed upon the noses of hogs and the fingers of women to restrain them and bring them into subjection. Thankfully this attitude no longer prevails, although the poor hog may disagree. Today the wedding ring still pays centre stage with any amount of choice available. Here in West Kerry we have a number of excellent jewellers who will craft unique pieces for the occasion and thus continue a practice that goes back thousands of years to the banks of the Nile. Bridal Beauty Sharron O’Connor 1. Glowing skin truly comes from within and drinking up to 2 litres of water a day will support your skincare routine and ensure that dehydration, which plays havoc on the skin, is kept under control. 2. On the lead up the wedding don’t make any drastic skin care changes. Ensure that you are trialing any new or suggested products at least 6 months in advance. 3. When booking facials on the lead up to the wedding be sure and allow plenty of time in advance. Some treatments require a series of facials to see best results and your skin may take time to benefit from these. 4. I would suggest an initial skin care consultation to get an in-depth analysis done and a tailor made routine created for you. 5. The wonder Yon-Ka product for me is the Gommage. This product acts as a 4 in 1 treatment for dehydration, exfoliation, balance and hydration and is priced at €37.50. This really is a wow product! 6. The Irish seaweed based product VOYA is also available here at the spa and their organic lavender and sweet sugar glow will prep your skin for perfect tanning on the lead up to the big day. 7. Be sure and have your tan trial and make up trial around the same time to ensure that your overall look will be one that you are happy with on the day itself. Make up and Tan will look different in photos and natural light so bear this in mind when getting your trial done. We also offer a mobile make up service on the morning of your wedding which saves you travelling on the morning of your wedding! Sharron O’Connor has been manager of The Peninsula Spa at the Dingle Skellig Hotel for almost 15 years. With extensive experience in London and here in Ireland, Sharron is passionate about enhancing your skin naturally through the very best skin care routine.

We got married on the 15th of September 2018 and held the reception in Garryvoe Hotel in East Cork with 90 guests in attendance. The best thing about our day was having all the people we love together in the one place to share our special day, and the hotel and staff were so lovely it made the whole experience even better. We wouldn't change a thing about the day it was perfect.. we just wish we could do it all again! 22 West Kerry Live

The Best Man’s Speech On a wedding day the spotlight is understandably focused on the Bride and groom but one of the unsung hero’s of the day is surely the Best Man. He is tasked with numerous jobs, but the one that towers over everything else is “the speech”, it can lead to sleepless nights beforehand and no end of nerves on the day. So if you’ve been appointed to the exalted position of Best Man listen up: here’s a few tips to help you through the speech. 1. Keep in mind that the audience are on your side (and to be honest will laugh at the slight-

est of prompts). Nobody is there to give you a hard time. 2. Thank everyone for making it such a great occasion and mention the bride and groom’s parents by name 3. Take your time. One of the biggest mistakes people can make is to fly through the speech just to get it over and done with. This is a guaranteed way to make it fall flat. Pause for laughs at the appropriate times and you’ll be surprised how easily they come. 4. Don’t drink beforehand. You’ll enjoy it all the more afterwards. 5. Do your research. Ask family members about the groom as a child or for any interesting stories. Maybe try googling the date of the wedding to see if there was some event in history that you could use as a humourous

Phós muid ar an 16 Samhain 2018 i Séipéal Mhic Dara ar an gCeathrú Rua agus bhí an ceiliúradh againn in Óstán an Galway Bay i mBóthar na Trá i nGaillimh. Bhí 220 duine inár gcuideachta a tháinig ó chéin agus ó chóngar don lá mór. Caithfidh muid a rá, go raibh lá agus oíche den chéad scoth againn agus go bhfuil muid an-bhuíoch de chách. An rud is fearr faoin lá - Ár gcairde agus ár gclanna a bheith linn ar an lá agus iad ag baint taitneamh agus spraoi as an ócáid. Sheas Dara, mac Ghearóid suas tar éis an dinnéir agus thug sé óráid bhreá chroíúil agus álainn uaidh. Bhí muid féin agus gach a bhí i láthair thar a bheith bródúil as. Níl a fhios againn an mbeadh muid ag iarraidh aon rud a athrú, níos mó ama a bheith againn is dóigh mar gur imigh an lá agus an oíche an-sciobtha! 24 West Kerry Live

comparison to the day’s proceedings 6. Know your audience. Keep in mind that the average wedding consists of a fairly mixed crowd. So steer a steady course. 7. Steer clear of “inside jokes”, by definition they exclude most people. 8. Memorise the first few lines at least. After that it’s OK to have a few notes to prompt you but raise your head and face the audience as much as you can. 9. Compliment the bride on how she looks. 10. Don’t mention former girlfriends 11. References to the groom should be an equal mix of friendly digs and compliments 12. Finish by getting everyone to raise their glasses in a toast to the bride and groom.

We got married on the 14th of December 2018 in Dingle Church and we held the reception in the Skellig Hotel with 250 guests. The highlight of our day was when our son Páidí walked me down the aisle, he turned 2 a few weeks after the wedding. It was a special moment and it will be nice to show him when he’s older! Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne In omós do Bhríd Ní Mhóráin

Chaith Bríd tréimhse fada, tairbheach mar scríbhneoir cónaitheach i bPobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne ó 2008-2018. Foilsíodh a gcuid oibre gach bliain san iris Comhar agus chuir mórán acu isteach ar Chomórtais Liteartha an Oireachtais agus eile i gcaitheamh na mblianta. Is mó duine acu a fuair gradam de bharr spreagadh agus díograis Bhríd. Is iad Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne a mhaoinigh an scéim Scríbhneoir Cónaitheach agus is mór againn anseo sa scoil an chabhair agus an maoiniú sin. Bhíodh Bríd i mbun léirmheastóireachta ar na blaganna a chuireadh scoláirí in airde ar an suíomh blagála http://leabharthaleite.edublogs. org/. Bhí baint aici leis an togra ealaíne Ár mBaile Coiteann anuraidh, tráth ar chabhraigh sí le daltaí dánta a chumadh mar thionlacan le píosaí ealaíne a dheineadar ar théamaí a bhí bainteach leis an gcomhshaol. Tá an taispeántas sin againn i bhfoirm leabhair agus mar fhíseán agus le feiscint leis ar fhallaí na scoile. Guímis gath uile rath ar Bhríd agus í ar scor. Tuigimid go maith nach díomhaoin a bheidh sí! Nár laga Dia tú, a Bhríd!

Glan Update: Little Big Steps In Small Shops! Siopa an Phobail - Every little helps! In so many ways big problems can become so much more achievable if we take one step at a time! So in this spirit the community shop in Cloghane, An Siopa Phobail, has taken many little steps to make a difference and also to give their customers the option to make a difference also! It was with this ethos that joining the GLAN initiative was a no brainer to this local shop in Cloghane. Cups with a Conscience

It all began for this shop with the dismay of doing road cleans and finding that one of the biggest culprits of hedge litter was the …. Single use coffee cup. We all need that quick pick me up sometimes but it isn’t so quick when that cup will hang around in the environment for 30 to 60 years depending on the conditions! And when you do the math and add up how many coffee cups the average person would use in a week this was an obvious problem that needed a remedy! So the Siopa an Phobail started to offer a discount on coffee if you brought your own reusable and cup and would even wash it out

for you! And then for those forgetful mornings (we’ve all had them!) when you’ve forgotten your reusable cup they switched all their cups to fully compostable cups and even started selling Bamboo reusable cups or the flashy eCupán which are collapsible so they fit into your bag easily! 91% of plastic isn’t recycled…. So we are all aware now reduce and reuse is far more preferable to recycling particularly with the latest alarming statistics that have just been calculated that of the 8.3 BILLION tonnes of plastic that have been produced only 9%has actually been recycled, 12 % has been incinerated and an alarming 79% of this has been sent to landfill or worse still has ended up in the environment…So recycling is not the only answer to the plastic problem… And one of the biggest single use culprits is the plastic water bottle... And when you think each bottle produced could spend five century’s just floating around in the sea before they are finally degraded into micro and nano plastic particles to be continue to be ingested by marine life and even us this is certainly a problem that needs tackling! So the Siopa are tackling this problem head on will even refill your water container from their tap for free such a simple but effective solution! This has proven particularly appreciated by cyclists and the hillwalkers on their way up the fabulous Mount Brandon or on their way around the Dingle Way! Back to the good ole days! Even at my young age I have the nostalgia of the milk man and his glass bottles and yes ….they’re back!

A new Ballymac dairy based in Tralee have resorted back to the lovely Glass bottle and are now delivering all the way back to the base of Mount Brandon in Cloghane and if you bring your bottle back to the Siopa you even get your 50c back a bottle! Local is better! As always they are strong supporters of local produce and one of their very yummy suppliers of the locally homemade Drom Jams is now even giving 20c back per Jam jar that’s returned! The taste is even sweeter now! Embrace circular change And with the move of the lovely Bácús Bhréanainn to a bigger bakery in Dingle they decided to use this opportunity to give their customers somewhere dry and warm to enjoy their fresh and handmade cinnamon buns and a coffee! The room is in keeping with making as many circular changes as possible, they even furnished and decorated the room with “reloved” unwanted furniture to make a charming space for a Tae agus Plé! And these steps are just the beginning they are already searching for the next new solution, including bamboo tooth brushes and shampoo bars! The idea of making a significant difference can be daunting but in reducing our single use items and aiming for a circular economy once more we collectively can make a huge difference. One of my favourite sayings that always makes me chuckle is: “If you think you are too small to make a impact….then you’ve never been in bed with a mosquito!”

From The Archives Edited by Ted Creedon FISHING DISASTER AT ROSSBEIGH - From Nottingham Journal, 19 October 1865 The fineness of the weather, on Tuesday evening last, tempted several boats from both sides of Castlemaine Harbour to go outside Inch Bar to fish for herrings, which are now so abundant on our shores. When returning just before daylight on Wednesday morning, and passing by Rossbeigh island, a sudden and terrific storm sprang up, which caused the loss of seven lives in a few moments. One boat from Lack, the property of two brothers named Giles, was upset close to the strand at Rossbeigh. There were nine fishermen on board and five of the crew were drowned. The unfortunate men who lost their lives in this tragedy were – two Gileses (the owners), two cousins of theirs – brothers named Flynn - and a young man named Daly. One of the Flynns came ashore safe with the others, but seeing one of his cousins struggling near the shore he rushed out again, undismayed by the danger he had just escaped from, to try and save Giles but lost his own life in the gallant attempt. The other four men escaped on the oars and spars of the boat. [While the writer reports the loss of seven lives the story only accounts for five]. MISSING CHILD From Cork Constitution, 24 April 1862 On Wednesday morning last, a five years old child, the son of Patrick Deen, farmer, who resides at Been-bawn, a distance of a mile-anda-half from Dingle, went to drive some of his father’s cattle to his fields. The little boy was missed away a few hours afterwards, and his parents looked for him in many places, but could not find him that day.

The night then came on and when his parents did not see their child coming home, they gave him up for lost.

vessel lay, advising him to abandon her with all possible speed; and if not he and the crew would be lost before morning.

All day on Thursday the poor distracted father, and several others, looked about the cliffs thinking they might find the dead body of the child.

Nothing would induce him to take the advice of the brave men who volunteered their services in the cause of common humanity, and at great imminent peril to their own lives. Six young men lighted a fire on the safest spot on the same coast, and remained there until midnight, expecting that it would answer as a beacon to the crew, should they attempt a landing.

He was found alive by his uncle Thomas Breen, at about 8 o’clock that evening in a ditch within two fields of his father’s house, with his leg broken. The little creature says that it was his father’s horse gave him a kick and broke his leg, and that when he did get a kick he crawled on his hands and knees to a ditch and could go no further. There he remained for two days and a night without eating a morsel of food.

It is not known whether they abandoned the craft or not; but in the morning she was a total wreck, and the adjacent strand strewn with potatoes. Three of the bodies were washed ashore yesterday and await a coroner’s inquest.

LOSS OF FAMINE RELIEF FOR KILLORGLIN From Kings County Chronicle, 13 January 1847. A vessel laden with between sixty and seventy tons of bread stuffs [usually grain, flour or meal for making bread] for the Killorglin relief committee went on Inch Bar during a thick fog on Wednesday evening, the 30th of December. She was since got off by the exertions of the Coast Guards of the Lack station, under the command of chief boatman Townsend; but two-thirds of the provisions have been injured. This loss will be severely felt by the poor of this district. The cargo was insured. BRANDON BAY DISASTER From Cork Examiner, 20 March 1871 A report has reached this town [Dingle] of the total loss of a large smack in Brandon Bay on Wednesday night last. The ill-fated craft was owned by the Messrs. Russell, Limerick, and was bound for Berehaven with a cargo of potatoes. She was commanded by a pilot named James Hennessy, who, together with three other men on board, were all natives of the County Clare. When she came to anchor, at dark, quite close to land, a pilot named John Lynch and four men put off in a canoe to render assistance. When they reached the smack, they told Hennessy the dangerous position in which his

We are accustomed to reading about Tractor Runs, Bicycle Runs, Park Runs and all for very good causes but this is the first time a Bus Run of sorts has taken to the roads of Kerry. A Coach Convoy Tour of the stunning Slea Head is the brainchild of Paddy Kennedy of Kennedy Coaches Annascaul. Monies raised from the ticket sales will go to the Kerry Hospice Foundation. Paddy has rounded up the support of Kerry Coaches in Killarney, Flynn's Coaches of Castlemaine and O'Shea's Coaches of Tralee who have all come on board in support of this good cause which will take place on Saturday, March 9th. Paddy said that he and his wife Anne "wanted to do our bit for the Kerry Hospice Foundation and I guess as the coach tour business is what we know best we hope this is an idea that Kerry people will gladly support as there is actually great value on offer and I can assure you this will be no ordinary tour!"

CLOTHES COLLECTION BAILÚCHÁN EADAÍ

The Convoy gathering point will be the South Pole Inn Annascaul at 12 noon. The local committee has organised all kinds of entertainment, there will be singing tour guides, storytellers and dancing at the crossroads and then back to the Dingle Skellig Hotel for an "Afternoon Tea Dance " and around 6.30pm the coaches will depart Dingle to bring everyone back home again. Since being announced the Coach Convoy quickly sold out, the organisers wish to thank all those who supported this cause.

Breandán Mac Gearailt

Tá sí coitianta ag rá anseo agus sa Bruiseal nách bhfuil aon fhadhb aici i gcás na hÉireann, ach nuair a thagann sí abhaile ‘sí Éirinn bun agus barr a mí-ádh. Chaithfeá a rá nách bhfuil aon easpa cabaireachta bréagach uirthi agus níl suaimhneas ‘ge baile aici fiú ó chuid dá Teoraithe ‘galair’ mar duirt an file. Tá an tAontas Eorpach sásta cabhair a tabhairt d’Éirinn, má fhágann May agus a deisceabhail Sasanacha an tAontas Eorpach glan. Sin mar a bheidh aici. Tá sí agus a cairde ag iarraidh cás na teorann a chaitheamh i dtraipisí ach go mbeadh teacht acu féin ar mhargaí an Aontais Eorpaigh agus iad tréis tranglam gan iarraidh a thionscnú. Seans nách bhfuil an ceart agam ach níor mhaith liom a bheith ina bróga.

Treasa Úd Thall

‘Ní dhéanfar aon lá oibre ar feadh míosa’, arsa fear seoigh liom an lá cheanna. Cheap daoine ná buafaí ar Bhleá Cliath go deireadh an chéad seo ach tá an bonn bainte uatha, a bhuachaill’, ar sé. ‘Ambaiste go raibh ‘píosa’ acu ortha féin- fan amach ó bhun mo threabhsair’, dar leis.. Is dócha go raibh cuid mhaith don gceart aige. Agus ina theannta san bhí furmhór mhór an chirt aige. ‘Is dócha go measadar go mbeimís báite i bpoll móna’, arsa mo dhuine. ‘Sí an bhua seo a chuirfidh eagla amach, fiú is gur i Feabhra fuar atáimíd. Dar leis. Tá fhios agam go bhfuil beart mór fóirne CLG Éireann a deir fé chluichí sraithe ná bíonn scata foirne dáiríre i gcorp lár an Gheimhridh. Mura bhfuil siad dáirire canathaobh go nglacann siad páirt. Tá ár gcomórtaisí caide roinnte ag an mhuintir seo againne sa Domhan Toir agus Tiar, le ár bhfearaibh agus lenár mná i Sasana agus Meiriceá agus sna cheithre áird.

Níor chaill na ‘Tories’ riamh é, ach m’fhéidir go dtabharfadh a geall cáirde dhi agus dóibh. Measaim go bhféadfadh go bhfaigheadh siad rud éigin ach má gheibheann beidh an ‘teora’ mar atá. Ba dhóigh leat ar chuid acu seo a bhíonn ag caint ag cruinnithe thall gur cheart don Aontas Eorpach áthas a bhéith ortha, a bhfuil uatha a thabhairt dóibh. An fhadhb is mó atá acu, ná feadair siad cad ‘tá uatha’.

Is breá leis na Fóirne sciúird a thabhairt go Meiriceá le imirt agus ár laochas agus ár n-áthas a roinnt leo.

Bhí fir maithe eile againn, Brian Ó Beaglaoi agus buachaillí an Daingin. Is dócha go mbeidh trácht ar thrácht fé ‘Bhua an tSathairn,’ againn agus san tuillte acu.

Tá Tír Eoghain mheasfá teipithe go mór agus is deacair a thuiscint go mbeidh feabhas obann ortha, ainneoin éirim agus draíocht Mhickey Harte. Buadh le poinnte ar Roscommán - ní raibh ann ach san. Tá Roscommán go maith agus an Ghaillimh níos fearr ná bhíodar ar an nDomhnach. Bhí barra liobar an fhuaicht ortha. Gout ? Or Is It Something Else? Eddie O'Grady Gout is a form of arthritis which starts as a result of excess uric acid build-up in the blood, also called hyperuricemia. It is an extremely painful condition. Uric acid is produced in the body during the breakdown of purines - chemical compounds that are found in certain foods such as meat, poultry, and seafood. Normally, uric acid is dissolved in the blood and is excreted from the body in the urine via the kidneys. If too much uric acid is produced, it can build up and form needle-like crystals that trigger inflammation and pain in the joints and surrounding tissue. Gout often starts by affecting the joint at the base of the big toe. Attacks often occur without warning and in the middle of the night. They can come on quickly and keep returning over time, slowly damaging tissues in the region of the inflammation. Tests and diagnosis Gout can be tricky to diagnose, as it's symptoms can be similar to those of other conditions, i.e. bunion on the big toe. While hyperuricemia occurs in the majority of people that develop gout, it may not be present during a flare. There is one very subtle, important difference between gout and other foot conditions, that helps the health practitioner differentiate between them. When you very gently stroke the skin of a gout affected area, it will cause a lot 38 West Kerry Live

of pain in the sufferer. This does not occur with other conditions. The gout makes the skin super sensitive. This test is not 100% accurate, but I have found it to be a reasonably good indicator that one should look in the direction of gout, and refer the patient onto a doctor. This is especially true, if during examination and history take, the patient meets other criteria that would make them more prone to gout, and there has been no specific injury to the area affected. Often with tests you are more trying to rule out other conditions and narrow your possibilities down to that of gout.. One diagnostic test that doctors can carry out is the joint fluid test, where fluid is extracted from the affected joint with a needle. The fluid is then examined to see if any urate crystals are present. As joint infections can also cause similar symptoms to gout, a doctor can also look for bacteria when carrying out a joint fluid test in order to rule out a bacterial cause. Doctors can also do a blood test to measure the levels of uric acid in the blood. However, people with high uric acid levels do not always experience gout. Equally, some people can develop the symptoms of gout without having increased levels of uric acid in the blood. Finally, doctors can search for urate crystals around joints or within a tophus(deposit of uric acid crystals) using ultrasound or CT scans. X-rays cannot detect gout, but may be used to rule out other causes.

Milltown Castlemaine GAA Notes Mid Kerry Senior Football League, Round 2 Milltown/Castlemaine 2-13 Laune Rangers 1-06 Report by Dara O'Connor Milltown/Castlemaine played host to Round 2 of the Mid Kerry Senior Football League today against near neighbours & arch rivals Laune Rangers. The home side came into the contest on the back of an opening round ten point win away to Keel last Sunday so spirits were high whilst Laune Rangers were coming off the back of a disappointing opening round heavy defeat to Glenbeigh/Glencar in Cloon which they lost by nineteen points so a response was expected from the visitors. It was the home side who were quickest out of the blocks however and early points from full forward and corner forward Jeremiah Hayes and Jamie O'Shea from a tight angle put us 0-2 to 0-0 ahead inside two minutes. Jamie O'Shea on four minutes from a close in free after he was fouled whilst bearing down on goal pushed the lead out to three points after four minutes. Laune Rangers registered their first score of the contest after six minutes when midfielder Shane McSweeney landed a big score from a long way out after Colm O'Shea laid the ball off to him. A minute later and O'Shea through a 21 yard free converted after Daniel Whittleton had been held back when trying to break free from a tackle to narrow the gap further, Milltown/Castlemaine now leading 0-3 to 0-2. The hosts thereafter hit a purple patch, scoring 1-4 without reply as two frees from Jerome Flynn (One in the 10th minute from 14 yards after Vinny Costello touched the ball on the ground and another in the 23rd minute after a long ball from Pa Wren caused confusion in the Rangers goalmouth leading to a simple free in front of the goals). Sandwiched in between Flynn's two pointed frees, centre-forward Gavin Horan hit the net for a goal on 14 minutes after Flynn popped the ball off the shoulder to an on-rushing Horan who buried to the corner of the Rangers net to make it three goals in two games for an in-form Horan and also an interesting statistic being that Jerome Flynn has been the man who has played the final pass for every Milltown/Castlemaine goal so far in 2019 highlighting his importance to the team.

also in the 31st minute to leave four points between the sides at the midway point. HT- Milltown/Castlemaine 1-7 Laune Rangers 1-3 Laune Rangers who undoubtedly had their best spell of this encounter either side of half-time started where they left off before the interval as two early points in the 32nd and 38th minutes respectively, both from the boot of Colm O'Shea, a 21 yard free after David Costello was fouled and another free from 14 yards had only two between the sides at 1-7 to 1-5 and rounded off a spell where the visitors had hit 1-3 without reply to make it game well and truly on. Unfortunately this was to be as good as it got and as close as they would come to turning the match in their favour as they would only notch one more score between the 38th and 60th minutes. They would wait eighteen minutes to register their next point whilst during this spell, Milltown/Castlemaine put four points on the board to widen the gap. Donal Dennehy who led by example in midfield when the going got tough got the home teams scoring underway for the second half on thirty nine minutes from play off his left peg (Milltown/Castlemaine's first score since the 23rd minute, the only slight negative from the overall very positive performance). Pa Wren on forty minutes with a peach of a point from play after good build-up play from substitute John Dennehy and Jerome Flynn & Jeremiah Hayes on forty four minutes off his left from play after Wren intercepted a ball in the middle of the park before feeding David Roche who popped the ball to Hayes who was in the better position put us 1-10 to 1-5 ahead with the final quarter to come. Jerome Flynn tagged on a 14 yard free on fifty three minutes to punish a Laune Rangers error when a free-kick they had near their own goal didn't travel the required distance to push the gap out to six points, 1-11 to 1-5. Shane McSweeney for Laune Rangers ended the aforementioned eighteen minute barren spell for the men from the banks of the River Laune when he pointed on fifty six minutes following good interchange play with corner forward David Costello, this however would be their final score of the day.

Jamie O'Shea also pointed just before this Horan goal from play to round off the home sides first half scoring by the 23rd minute leading 1-7 to 0-2 by this stage.

Milltown/Castlemaine pushed for home in the latter stages of this Mid Kerry League contest as points from Jerome Flynn in the 57th and 64th minutes respectively, one from a free which he won and converted from 14 yards, the other a super point from a tricky angle after the standout performer of the second half Pa Wren played a sublime pass which cut open the Rangers rearguard.

Laune Rangers failed to drop their heads and would finish the opening half with a flurry as 1-1 before half-time, the goal coming from a palmed finish to an empty net by Colm O'Shea after a pointed effort from Jack O'Connor came back off the upright to the waiting O'Shea who showed great anticipation to finish to the net. Their young centre-forward Darragh O'Connor slotted over a point on the brink of half time

Sandwiched in between and right on the hour mark (60th min) it was the turn of the new breed of youngsters to lay down their own marker as two minors in substitute Dylan O'Neil and wing-back David Leane combined in only their second senior appearance for Milltown/ Castlemaine to rattle the net as O'Neil played a ball across the square which was fumbled by Vinny Costello and buried by Leane.

40 West Kerry Live

Referee Billy O'Shea called full-time after 65 minutes and Milltown/Castlemaine move to the top of the standings with a second ten point win in the space of seven days. FT- Milltown/Castlemaine 2-13 Laune Rangers 1-06 A hugely positive start to 2019 for the Seniors with two 10 points wins to get the year up and running, for the second week in succession they have scored 13 points (3-13 last week, 2-13 today, 5-26 in total), 5 goals in 2 games and only 3 scores conceded from open play in 65 minutes of Football today providing a welcome confidence boost to the defenders on the team. From an attacking perspective the team scored 2-8 from open play today with 0-5 from frees. Well done to both the players and management. Their next outing is home to Beaufort on Sunday next at 12 noon. Answer Since 1 January 2019, P45s and P60s have been abolished and replaced with an online system as part of PAYE modernisation. You will no longer get a P45 if you leave your job. Instead, your employer must now send this information electronically to Revenue. The P60 certificate will be replaced by an end of year statement. Your 2018 P60 is the last P60 that you will get from your employer. Your end of year statement for 2019 will be available after 31 December 2019 throughRevenue’s myAccount service. An end of year statement includes details of all your pay and the income tax, USC and PRSI deducted by your employer

during the year. It also records your Local Property Tax (LPT) deductions (if you choose to have the LPT deducted from your pay). Gaeilge do Dhaoine Fásta

Bíonn aonach sa Daingean ar an Satharn deirineach de gach mhí, agus bíonn aonach sa Caisleán ar an dara satharn de gach mhí. Tá páirc fé leith sa Daingean ar a glaodhtar Páirc an Aonaigh, dos na beithidigh. Is le Máire Ni Shúilleabháin ón Daingean an páirc. Caitheann gach éinne dhá pingin an beithíoch a thabhairt di ag dul isteach. Ni mar sin a bhi sé in aon chor fadó, is amhlaidh a thabharfadh éinne a dhíolfadh beithidhigh cúpla pingin ag an geata ag dul amach. Bionn aonach caorach sa Daingean ar an lé deirineach de Lúghnasa agus ar an la deirineach de Meadhon Fóghmhair. Siad san an dá príomh aonaigh. Nuair a bhíonn duine ag díol biethidhigh lorgóchadh sé an méid do b'fhiú í. Nuair na thabharfadh na ceannuighthóir an méid sin chuige thiocfadh fear eile agus déarfadh sé an deifríocht do scobta eatortha. Dá mbeidís sásta leis an mhargadh, sáthfadh an ceannuighthóir a mhaide ins an pluid agus dheinfeadh sé í mharcáil. Marcálann na ceannuighthóirí na beithidhigh anois le breasal nó le siosúr. Fadó thagadh na ceannuighthóirí go dtín na tighthe ag ceannach muca agus beithidhigh agus siubhalidís leó go dtí Tráighlí. Bionn aonach capall sa Daingean ar gach aonach go mór mhór aonach Lúghnasa. Nuair a dhíolann duine beithidhigh tubann sé da sgilling don ceannuightheoir chun áth a bheith aige.

Movie Review

Michael Healy-Rae TD Mícheál Ó’hEalaigh-Rae

The Favourite

Working with David Russell Clinics-3rd Mon of the month.

Pierce Hoare “The Favourite” is a 2018 film by Yorgos Lanthimos (The Lobster). It has been nominated for Best Picture at the 2019 academy awards, alongside films such as “BlacKkKlansman”, “A Star is Born” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The film is about two women who try to gain the trust of Queen Anne of England in the early 18th Century. Though not as extreme as Lanthimos’s other film, “The Lobster”, “The Favourite” is pretty weird, so I would recommend watching some of Lanthimos’s other work before taking a stab at “The Favourite.” The film stars Olivia Colman (Peep Show, Broadchurch), Emma Stone (La La Land, Maniac) and Rachel Weisz (The Mummy, Enemy at the Gates). Despite how odd the movie is, I do think it has a better chance at winning Best Picture than some of the other nominees. The writing and characters are excellent, with my opinions on the three main characters changing as the chapters progressed. The camerawork is amazing and the imagery in some scenes definitely add to the weirdness. I’m not sure how historically accurate the film is but if you want a weirdly captivating experience then I would recommend watching it. Additionally, while the film somehow got a 15A rating, it is definitely an 18s. Of all eight films nominated for Best Picture this year, “The Favourite” is probably one of the most deserving. Pierce Hoare is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne

The Time of the Tans An Oral History of The War of Independence in County Clare le Tomás Mac Conmara foilsithe ag Mercier ‘Stories of the Black and Tans have been told across Ireland since the force was first released into the country in March 1920. Casting a dark and lingering shadow, they remain an evocative and emotive category of memory. For people who lived through it and those who inherited associated stories, the Black and Tans were the embodiment of British repression, violence and malevolence. The Irish War of Independence is a landmark in the chronology of Irish history and profoundly affected all areas of life. Much of that experience was never recorded. Based on Tomás Mac Conmara’s almost two decades of oral history recordings, selected from over 400 interviews, as well as access to multiple private family collections, The Time of the Tans illuminates the stories of a period that has dominated the historical consciousness of Ireland. From direct testimony of 105-year-old Margaret Hoey, to the inherited tradition of Flan O’Brien, who was born in 1927, the stories pulsate with an intensity of emotion. The majority of interviewees who were recorded for this research have sadly since passed away. Now, their memories which have been preserved for posterity, breathe new life into an enduringly important period in modern Irish history.’ - Mercier
