Born in Dublin in 1817 of Huguenot descent, George Victor Du Noyer was a prolific watercolourist, geologist and antiquarian. Over the course of his lifetime - he died in 1869 - Du Noyer produced thousands of drawings documenting the landscapes, geological formations, antiquities and general life of the towns and countryside of Ireland. His first employment was with the Ordnance Survey and began in 1834, when he was apprenticed to the artist George Petrie, head of the Topographical Department. In 1848 du Noyer was appointed assistant at the Geological Survey of Ireland, where he worked under Thomas Oldham. The expansion of the railway network in Ireland had exposed a great deal of new geological information. Du Noyer made drawings of these cuttings, and spent the next two decades walking the countryside as a geological surveyor, making drawings mainly in counties Waterford, Wexford, Cork and Kerry, as well as Co. Antrim, Down and Armagh. During his field work in Kerry, Du Noyer is credited with discovering the prehistoric city of Fahan. The talk will focus on this trip and on Du Noyer’s drawings of the stone houses on the Dingle Peninsula.

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 25th June when the feature will be Float Like a Butterfly. From
the producers of Once and Sing Street, Float Like a Butterfly is a powerful and timely story of a girl's fight for freedom and belonging. In a gender-reversal of classic film Billy Elliot, 15-yearold Frances has to fight for the right to fight back. Raised in roadside camps in rural Ireland, Frances wants to champion her people inside the boxing ring and out, like her idol Muhammad Ali. But society is determined to break her spirit and destroy her way of life. And her father, once her greatest ally, is too defeated himself to imagine any better for his daughter. But Frances was not born to be broken. In the mother of all fights, she must dig deep to find in herself the Champion her father once knew her to be. The following week on Tuesday 2nd July the feature will be the coming of age comedy Booksmart. The story follows two academic superstars and best friends who, on the eve of their high school graduation, suddenly realize that they should have worked less and played more. Determined never to fall short of their peers, the girls set out on a mission to cram four years of fun into one night. Fast-paced, funny, and fresh, Booksmart adds a smart new spin to the coming-ofage comedy. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News Louis Murchan EMPLOYABILITY SERVICE & WAGE SUBSIDY SCHEME “EmployAbility” Service is an employment and recruitment service to assist people with a disability to secure and maintain a job in the open labour market. This is a well worth-while services and readers should take a little time to read, absorb and digest this service, as it is of great service to those less fortunate than ourselves, and is also beneficial to the wider community . Those who are eligible are people with a disability who are job ready and need a level of support to succeed in long-term and sustainable employment. This service provides a range of supports to employers and people with a disability, through Job Coaches. The range of supports include: • Individual Needs Assessment • Vocational Profiling and Career Planning • Individual Employment Plan • Job Sourcing and Job Matching • On-the-Job Support and Coaching • Advice and Support to Employers •Follow-up Support and Mentoring to both Employers & Employees. Employers get the benefit of free recruitment and employment service, access to a Database of skilled jobseekers, Access to a committed, local work force, On-going support from a professional team of Job Coaches and Advice on employment grants and supports. One of the intriguing services or benefits of this service is the WAGE SUBSIDY SCHEME, whereby farmers or other employers receive a subsidy to take-on or employ one of Employability Service’s clients. This is an incentive to employers, outside of the Public Sector, to employ persons with disabilities, to work for 21 hours per week, or more. The employee must work a minimum of 21 hours, for the employer to qualify, and they will in return receive a grant/subsidy of €5.30 per hour. If the maths are to be looked at clearly, this would then allow employers to pay their staff/worker say , €11.50 per hour yet it would only cost them €6.20 per hour. This gives a total annual subsidy to employer of €10,748, based on a 39-hour week. The national Minimum wage of €9.80 must apply, but this writer asks that employers be a bit more generous than that, considering the subsidy. In order to apply for a WSS Strand I subsidy, an employer should complete the available forms and forward them, along with all of the supporting documentation, to: EmployAbility Service West Kerry, CWS Complexs, Rock Street, Tralee, Co Kerry, (Tel: 066-71 18758) CLIMATE ACTION PLAN - REDUCING CATTLE FINISHING AGE If you haven’t heard of the new government Climate Action Plan, by now, you should make yourself aware of some of its main points, as it will affect everyone from house and car-owners to farmers. One of the many agriculture features proposed is to reduce the age that beef cattle can be slaughtered at. This has been an aspiration of many, in the past including farmers and consumers. Some of the main points are as follows: •
Environmental standards of animal feeds to be reviewed
•
Maximum possible environment and climate ambition in next CAP
•
Restoration of 22,107ha of raised bog
•
Carbon tax increase from €20 per tonne to €80 by 2030
•
Rewetting 40,000 ha of organic grassland soils
•
Almost every aspect of our daily lives will be affected by a new climate strategy which will be unveiled today.
•
Motorists and businesses will feel the brunt of tax hikes unless they actively invest in going green. The Government plans to force petrol and diesel cars off our roads, introduce new buildings regulations and change the school curriculum
10 West Kerry Live
in a bid to counteract climate change.
•
A leaked copy of the plan seen by the Irish Independent shows it has a major emphasis on the transport sector. Proposals include banning petrol and diesel cars from town centres around the country.
•
A car-scrappage scheme is under consideration for next year in a bid to promote a move toward electric vehicles (EVs).
•
The plan recommits the Government to raising carbon tax from the current rate of €20 per tonne to €80 by 2030.
•
If the tax stood at €80 per tonne, based on today's prices and including Vat, a litre of petrol would be around 17c dearer and diesel 20c.
Ultimately, legislation will be introduced to ban the sale of new fossil fuel cars from 2030 and to stop granting NCTs from 2045. A series of incentives are in the pipeline for people willing to transfer to EVs, including a carscrappage scheme. It is hoped to have a charging network capable of catering for 800,000 EVs in place by 2030. AGRI, FORESTRY AND LAND USE TO CONTRIBUTE 40% TO CARBON REDUCTIONS Land use, agriculture and forestry together will contribute approximately 40% of the reductions in emissions being planned between now and 2030, according to Minister for Communications, Climate Action and the Environment Richard Bruton. He also hinted that carbon tax increases are on the way – possibly in Budget 2020, and suggested that Ireland has committed to an increase in the carbon tax to eventually hit €80/t. A target to drive the expansion of forestry planting on lands across Ireland has been included as part of this whole plan, and is only one of over 180 actions set out by the government. No sitting government is ever popular, but from an environmental point of view, it must be handed to them that they are at least trying. Many of these proposals and actions may ultimately fail, but failure will only highlight both weaknesses in the plan, and weaknesses in our attitudes; and acceptances of what needs to be done. Then we can move on. Call this a proto-type. Nothing ever works out, the first time, but that doesn’t mean we must give up. It means that we must tweak the plan, and move-on. With regards to agriculture, the plan focuses on a number of ‘key’ areas. It notes that the plan hopes to achieve an expansion of forestry planting in Ireland in an effort “to ensure that carbon abatement from land-use is delivered in 2021 – 2030 and in the years beyond”. Finally, the plan notes that it aims to support diversification within agriculture and land use to develop “sustainable and circular value chains and business models” for lower carbon intensity farming. This will include an emphasis on organic production and protection and enhancement of biodiversity and water quality and the production of biobased products and bioenergy through the Common Agricultural Policy. Concluding, the Government statement outlined that the plan will ensure the implementation of the National Policy Statement on the bioeconomy. The delivery of “substantial verifiable greenhouse gas abatement” (or in other words, a serious reduction in the production of greenhouse gasses), through the adoption of a specified range of improvements in farming practices is flagged as another key target of the plan. SIMPLIFICATION OF BDGP This relates to the eligibility of Stock Bulls under the programme. Participants in the programme using a stock bull are required to have at least one bull on their holding on the 30th of June 2019 who was a minimum of 12 months old and was rated at 4 or 5 stars on the Replacement and/or Terminal Index, within and/or across breed on the first genomic evaluation or the genomic evaluation at the time of purchase. There are 2 simplifications to this requirement: • Where a bull on the holding had a published genomic evaluation and had been deemed ineligible as it was rated at 3 stars or less on that first genotyping evaluation, it can now be deemed eligible if the bull is now rated at 4 or 5 stars. •
Where bull is in the herd on the 30 of June but has yet to be
Pat Hanafin
sampled, once a sample is received by the lab on or before the 30 June and the genotyping process has commenced, this will be considered eligible provided the bull is rated 4 or 5 stars on its subsequent genomic evaluation. This will mean that the July 2019 evaluation (published 22 July) and the Sept 2019 evaluation (published 23 Sep) will now be counted for eligibility purposes. This should lead to many participants receiving their full payment in 2019. It is important that participants stick with this scheme and stay within the parameters set out by the DAFM’s Beef Scheme Section. That’s not because this is a good scheme, (far from it!), but because the Department, in this case is very intransigent, and offer very little by way of understanding, to those who fall short of their requirements, no matter what the reason. In sickness or in health, you must abide. ANAEROBIC DIGESTION FEEDSTOCKS SURVEY The Dingle Hub is again at the fore locally, in its efforts to get involved with the farming community. The idea of anaerobic digestion has been around for decades, and is a proven success in other parts of the world, particularly Holland, where vast amounts of pig waste needs to be disposed of in a safe and environmentally manner. I would like to bring our survey for anaerobic digestion feedstocks to the attention of as many farmers as possible. The Hub are calling on all farmers to please help build a full understanding of grass and slurry feedstocks on the Dingle Peninsula so that their team can establish a solid foundation for the feasibility of anaerobic digestion here. Anyone interested can visit their website (www.dinglehub.com/ bioenergy) to complete the short survey to capture this data. Anaerobic digestion converts organic feedstocks such as slurry, food waste, grass silage, etc. into biogas. Biogas is a renewable energy source which can be used to replace fossil fuels to produce heat, electricity and can also be converted to a transport fuel. Developing biogas in the Dingle peninsula will support the local economy and will contribute to the community’s aim to become more energy self-sufficient and fight climate change. Should you wish further information, please do not hesitate to contact us directly at info@dinglehub.com.

Ironing out a few facts about the Celtic Curse! Irene Ní Fhlannúra For a while there has been a raging debate in genetics as to whether Hereditary Haemochromastosis is a Celtic thing or was it introduced to the Celts by Viking invaders and other colonizers. Hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disease that alters the body's ability to regulate iron absorption, resulting in excessive iron building up in cells overtime. What we do know is that the genetic variant (a glitch in our genetic coding) responsible for HH, identified in 1996 as C282Y, only occurred after our ancestors migrated from Central Africa to Northern and Central Europe, 60 to 70 generations ago. Up until then, there is no evidence that HH was in our genes. We also know that countries with the highest prevalence for HH around the North Sea and Western Europe, lie in the path of the once-marauding Vikings, which suggest that the Viking travel had something to do with introducing the defective gene into populations. However, the timeline does not fully explain how the gene mutation is present in Celtic Irish ancestral remains from Rathlin Island dating back to 3000 years before the Vikings hit our shores. The Irish have the highest frequency of C282Y mutation in the world, and specifically in the male population of Connaught. Although it is known as the “Celtic Curse”, the enhanced ability to store iron probably provided advantages at the time of our first migration to Europe. In particular, it would have helped us adapt to low-iron intakes in our new environment and ward off deficiencies. There is evidence that HH provided resistance to tuberculosis and typhoid infections, as these bacteria require free iron for growth and the way the body stores excess iron, makes it unavailable to these bacteria. The first diagnosis of Haemochromatosis was made during the 1800s through autopsies which showed accumulations of iron in the liver, pancreas, joints and skin. Early physicians established that iron overloads accumulated over a period of 30 to 40 years so symptoms of HH were not seen until life expectancy improved. Our early ancestors would have died long before the effects of excessive iron were apparent. Nowadays, blood analysis and genetic testing can identify the rogue gene responsible for HH. It is the most common genetic disease in Ireland with 1 out of every 83 people predisposed to HH, yet most people are only diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 50 years when symptoms of iron overload become apparent. Women tend to be diagnosed later due to blood loss through menstruation and pregnancy. Symptoms include chronic pain, joint pain, loss of libido, diabetes, enlarged liver and irregular heartbeat. Iron deposits affect the liver, heart, pancreas, endocrine glands and joints leading to impaired function and eventually disease or organ failure. Treatment involves regular blood-letting (phlebotomy). Initially, treatment may be required weekly or bi-weekly but once safe iron levels are established, may only be needed a few times per year, with regular monitoring. Along with phlebotomy, it is a good idea to adopt a dietary protocol to manage Haemochromatosis and to protect organs from free radical damage caused by excess iron levels. A wholefood, plant-based diet full of colour, anti-oxidants and unprocessed foods will offer the best protection in the long run. Limit iron-rich foods in the diet, especially heme-iron found in animal meats and offal. Heme-iron is more bioavailable in the human body - it is easier to absorb than non-heme iron. Non-heme iron is a type of iron found mostly in plant foods. Non-heme iron is more difficult to absorb. Some vegetables considered high in iron (non-heme) such as spinach, chard, black beans and green lentils may be eaten in moderation 16 West Kerry Live
as the phytates and fibre present in these foods inhibit iron absorption. Wholegrains too can be eaten for the same reason. Increased fibre intake, from a plant-based diet can bind with excess iron for elimination and inhibit the absorption of iron from food. Other foods that inhibit iron absorption include tannins in black tea, calcium-rich foods and healthy fats. Seek advice about using psyllium husk, calcium and any other supplements to minimize iron absorption, as you may well be inhibiting the absorption of other minerals and vital nutrients. Limit or avoid alcohol as it increases the uptake of iron and also may contain iron. Alcohol is an added burden to the liver which is one of the organs most affected by iron-overload. Avoid “fortified” and “enriched” cereals, breads, flour and other foods. Fortification is added to refined grain products – keep ingredients very natural and as whole as possible to avoid unnecessary addition of iron and vitamin C to everyday foods. Likewise, be wary of supplements which may contain iron and/or vitamin C. Vitamin C rich foods should not be eaten with meat dishes as it increases iron absorption. Yet, vitamin C is needed for many other functions and must not be completely avoided. Use iron-free cookware, ceramic is best but stainless steel is a handier option for most cooking. While HH is still considered a curse, particularly to those who are affected, it is part of who we are and helped us survive through challenging times. Modern treatment options and advances in genetics will make it less of a curse in the future and hopefully downgrade its risk to the same status as our pale skin and freckles! Killorglin Tidy Towns Update The weather in June has been most unseasonal but we have been promised some sunshine in the coming weeks which will give us a chance to get our flowers out around the town! The national Tidy Towns competition provides marks for a number of different categories each year. Promoting our native endangered pollinators is a big part of the competition and Killorglin Tidy Towns is increasing and replacing our stock of pollinator friendly plants annually, as budgets allow. Why do we need pollinator friendly plants, you ask? The human population depends on bees, butterflies and insects to pollinate our plants and to grow crops and fruit – without them, we would simply starve! But our native bees and insects are being destroyed by overuse of herbicides and loss of their native habitats. But very simple measures can help reverse these challenges and the good news is everyone can help! When you are sowing seeds or buying plants this summer, buy pollinator friendly plants such as: Wallflowers, Lupins, lavender, bacopia, bidens, nepeta – The flowerbed on the roundabout at the top of Upper Bridge street, has been replanted with all of these and our pollinators are loving it! Ger, Trish and Caroline from Boyles Garden Centre are also happy to provide advice regarding pollinator friendly plants. Why not allow a patch of nettles to colonise a small corner of your garden to provide food for the larvae (caterpillars) of once-common butterflies such as the small Tortoiseshell, Red Admiral, Peacock and Comma, all of which lay their eggs on its leaves. By allowing even a narrow ribbon of lawn to grow uncut you encourage dandelions, clover, celandines, buttercup and primroses and they are valuable sources of food for pollinating insects. Alternatively, consider mowing your lawn less often, or transforming sections of it into a wildflower-rich meadow. Killorglin Tidy Towns no longer uses herbicide to keep weeds at bay and we encourage you to use our eco- recipe. Mix 1 gallon of vinegar with a fistful of table salt and a good dash of washing up liquid to combine. Make sure the salt is dissolved and use in your sprayer as normal. It’s less expensive and most importantly, just as effective! Happy gardening! 20 West Kerry Live

alarming news arrived but the joy of the people was great on hearing that the boatmen were little the worse for their ugly spin. The boat was lost and the crew and their friends consider they were cheaply rid of their dangerous purchase.
DINGLE PORT NEWS From – Kerry Evening Post, 19 May, 1860.
WRECK IN DINGLE HARBOUR
The Norwagian [sic] brig Gyller has discharged 1,432 quarters of Indian corn for R. Hickson and Son, Milltown Mills. The cargo was taken on board at Port Largos [?] and in the whole of it there was not one bushel of damaged grain. The crew, ten in number, are all smart, active and civil men. The vessel proceeds in ballast to Cardiff, where she will take on coals for Alexandria, from whence she is to bring back a cargo of Indian corn.

Fisheries: there has been for a few weeks past a great scarcity of fish in our bay; at least there has been a great slackness in the take of fish, to the serious loss of our fishermen. Three of our trawlers went round last week to fish with trawls in Brandon Bay for soles. But they encountered there the most serious opposition – the canoe men having attacked the crew of the Bee in numbers. The Dingle boats had to return without fishing. The parties engaged in the act of violence have been bound over to keep the peace. SERIOUS BOATING ACCIDENT AT CROMANE From – Kerry Evening Post, 27 July, 1892. On Sunday evening a very serious boating accident occurred at Cromane Point which would undoubtedly have proved fatal were it not for the timely assistance rendered by the hardy fishermen of “the Point”. A picked crew of the Killorglin Boating Club were testing a newly purchased six-oared boat on the bay when the weather suddenly became rough. On attempting to turn the boat for home she was capsized between the Point and Lack. The crew clinging on to the boat were rescued in a short time by one of the Cromane boats returning from Lack.

Last week the French ketch Giraldo arrived at the entrance to Dingle harbour on one of the periodic lobster collecting tours. She anchored near the foreshore and awaited the pilot. When he got aboard the anchor was raised but the crew couldn’t control the vessel and she drifted onto the rocks at Black Point. She sank almost immediately. The crew got off safely but lost all their possessions. A subscription has been started for them in Dingle and already a considerable sum has been raised. THE VALENTIA DROWNING From - Kerryman, 24 October, 1908. A young man named John O’Shea, one of the victims of the Valentia drowning disaster was discovered on Sunday last at Kinard. The position in which the body was situated rendered it almost impossible to remove, it being jammed between two rocks. The greatest credit is due to the men of Kinard for the effort made by them to recover the remains, the corpse being so decomposed. Only for the encouragement of the Rev. Father Casey of Lispole they would have abandoned their efforts as hopeless.
Their cousin Patrick O’Neill leaves a father and mother as well as a wife and a young family of four to mourn his untimely end. POLICE ATTACKED IN VENTRY

Cloisim í, ach cá bhfuil sí?
Oíche Dé hAoine a bhí ann,
Feicim an ghrian ag éirí
Níl a fhios agam in ao' chor.
Bhí mé thuas im' sheomra ag féachaint ar Netflix ag an am
sa spéir go moch ar maidin.
Tá sé dorcha agus socair, Na mílte réalta thuas sa spéir. Cloisim ansan aríst í, Ag teacht ós mo chomhair. Féachaim suas agus ansan cloisim glór, Cloisim í: táim ag éirí níos cóngairí! Táim suas ag doras mo chomharsan Agus ansan atá sí, Ag bualadh na doirse, Ag léimt suas ar an doras, Ach tá an doras gloine fé ghlas, Tá sí agam, tá sí agam, Braithim í agus bolaím í, Tá sí agam ar deireadh. - Ava Ní Dhufaigh
Mo Rogha Peata Ó aon saghas peata, an ceann is fearr liom ná madra,
Chuala mé doras an oighin ag oscailt is ag dúnadh: Píotsa!!! Shiúil mé síos an staighre go cúramach agus gan

Braithim go bhfuil síochán timpeall orm
Bhí orm dul timpeall an tí

Chuaigh mé isteach sa chistin, Bhí an píotsa críochnaithe i nóiméad amháin Shiúil mo mham isteach: ní raibh sí sásta! Is bhí orm €3 a thabhairt di don bpíotsa! - Aoife de Faoite
Casaim mo cheann agus feicim Chef ramhar ag déanamh an-chuid glóir “Mamma Mia!” a bhí sé a' rá, Agus ní pizza amháin a bhí ar díol, Ach chomh maith leis sin bhí pasta breá
Pomeranian, ceann clúmhach, beag agus bán. Beidh sé néata, glan (más é do thoil é) agus spraoimhar. Sa tseachtain, thógfaimis siúlóid san iarnóin, D'fhéachfaimis ar F.R.I.E.N.D.S. le chéile, Í ag suí ar mo chosa. Ansin, d'fheadfaimis damhsa le chéile. Ag an deireadh seachtaine D'fhéadfaimis rith timpeall an tsráidbhaile, Bricfeasta a chócaráil is a ithe le chéile. Bhuel, is madra í, mar sin beidh sí ina suí, nó rud éigin, Ach tá's agat féin...

Bobbi Tá cat agam ag a baile, Bobbi is ainm di, Is breá léi iasc a ithe, Ach ní maith léi bheith ag rith. Nuair a bhíonn sí fuar Tagann sí isteach sa teach, Suíonn sí ós comhair na tine Is ní féidir liom í a chur amach. CostPlanning Saving Energy Tips at home Tips For A Home Renovation Project
Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise? A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

After the work is completed you may also need to update your policy to ensure you have the right level of cover as your house may be worth more. When getting prices for proposed work, make sure you get a quote instead of an estimate. If the contractor is only giving you an estimate there is no legal standing to the figure given whereas a written quote is binding as long as you don’t make changes to the work along the way. Try to get as much information as possible in the quote with a breakdown of costs and you should ensure that the quote includes VAT as this can add a substantial extra to your final costs. Your plans should be as detailed as possible when obtaining quotes. A detailed tender will help you control costs as the project progresses. If you are undertaking a larger ambitious project and if you decide to extend your home you should take time with the design. While it may be tempting to skip on professional fees sometimes you have to spend money to save money, and in the long run you may save money by engaging the help of an architect and/or a quantity surveyor. They can assess if your plans are achievable within your budget before you apply for planning permission, which you will need to do if the renovation project includes an extension of more than 40 square metres. Once your project is up and running you should keep track of your spending. Open a spreadsheet and write in every single cost so you know where your money is going and so you can better manage your budget. Finally, be realistic about your project and what you can and can’t afford and don’t be misled by the home improvement TV shows! Calling all local FARMERS! Please help us to build a full understanding of grass and slurry feedstocks on the Dingle Peninsula so that our team can establish a solid foundation for the feasibility of anaerobic digestion here. Visit www.dinglehub.com/bioenergy to complete the short survey to capture this data. Anaerobic digestion converts organic feedstocks such as slurry, food waste, grass silage, etc. into biogas. Biogas is a renewable energy source which can be used to replace fossil fuels to produce heat, electricity and can also be converted to a transport fuel. Developing biogas in the Dingle peninsula will support the local economy and will contribute to the community’s aim to become more energy selfsufficient and fight climate change. We also trailed by a point at the break, 1-3 to 1-4 (Emmet Casey notching our first half goal). However, a good start to the second period saw us go ahead 1-6 to 1-4 with three unanswered points from Mikey Houlihan (2) and Danny O'Shea. But we failed to capitalise on this period of dominance and a series of frees saw Asdee go ahead again by the 45th minute (1-6 to 1-7). There were no scores in the last 20 minutes (including injury time) as defences got on top in the wet conditions. Six of Asdee's scores on the day came from frees, while all of Cromane's scores came from play. Another tough loss. Cromane scorers: Mikey Houlihan 0-4, Emmet Casey 1-0, Donnchadh Walsh, Danny O'Shea 0-1 each.

News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Irish Mixed Foursomes Our Ceann Sibéal Mixed Foursomes team competed in the first rounds over the past weekend in Dooks Golf Club. The team did the Club proud by winning their first round against Castlegregory on Saturday morning and by winning again on Saturday afternoon against a strong Waterville side. On Sunday morning, they were back again in Dooks to take on the home side – a tough assignment given that Dooks were overall winners of this tournament in 2015. Following a close-run match, Dooks came out as winners but Ceann Sibéal left with heads held high – a brave and spirited performance. The Irish Mixed Foursomes is a massive tournament with an estimated 8,000 taking part in an All Ireland competition. Comhgháirdeas to the team and the Management of Fionnán Ó hÓgáin, Kate O’Connor and Eleanor Curran; the team featured a number of relative ‘rookies’ who acquitted themselves very well. Our picture shows team members Kate O’Connor, Ann O’Higgins, Paraic (Fleetwood) Ó Sé, Ann Moore, JJ Corduff, Tony Lawless and John O’Connor. Missing from picture are Niamh Fitzgerald, Ann Courtney and Ciarán Ó Coileán.

De-Mystifying Mindfulness How to bring more ease and joy into everyday busy life?
Silke Michels What is Mindfulness and what are the benefits of practicing? How much time does it take? Can you practice mindfulness when your life is very busy?Just to answer a few questions to offer more clarity on the subject of mindfulness practice. What is mindfulness? It is the awareness of knowing what is going on right now. Being fully aware of our presence in each moment, without judging what is happening. What is it that I am doing? What is it I am feeling? What am I hearing/seeing? What can I touch/smell? Connecting to the senses in each moment will connect us back into the present, when our mind is busy elsewhere. Why practicing being mindful? By training our mind to be aware of what is happening right in this moment, we create a choice in responding with more insight rather then reacting from our autopilot default. We gain more clarity that helps us to concentrate on whatever task we are doing at this moment. When practicing mindfulness, we learn how to ease our physical and mental pain, by turning towards our suffering with kindness. How can mindfulness help living with more joy and ease? When we learn about our negative thought patterns and how they influence our feelings and reactions, we are better able to choose how we respond to stressful events. Seeing our “monkey mind”, moving from one random thought to the next (did you know we think about 80.000 thoughts a day?), can also be a funny moment to witness.Understanding our habitual ways and learning to choose a different path can bring a lot of ease into our every day. By practicing mindfulness we come to the joyful realization that we can show nurture, care and kindness, to our difficulties.
the gloss on a plate as you lift from the basin, the sounds of the different items, and so on. You are doing a chore and noticing every movement, colour, and sound by slowing down and being fully present. My life is to busy, can I still practice? This is a wonderful thing about mindfulness - in order to practice we don’t need to wait for a calm moment, instead we create the calm and peaceful moments while our lives are busy. With practice, it becomes a part of our existence and it enables us to create the serenity and clarity we need when we are at our busiest, or when everything seems to be going the wrong way.It is a choice to take a conscious moment and being present with our life. With mindfulness we can start at any moment, just the way we are and with whatever it is that’s going on. No need to wait for the right moment. No better time then the now! Silke Michels teaches Mindfulness courses all levels and Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction in groups and for individuals, to adults and in schools. She also offers mindful walks in nature and retreat days. If you are interested in a free talk for your School, Health Centre or other Organization please get in contact. Or call for a free consultation to find out how mindfulness could benefit you. 087/6418184 smichels69@gmail.com www.silkemichels.wixsite.com/heart-mind Mindful Walking starting on Wednesday the 26th of June, every Wednesday from 10-11am meeting at Beenbawn Beach. Cost €5. Please call if you are interested.
Are you experiencing chronic Pain? Having troubles sleeping?
Are your thoughts keeping you awake? Digestive Problems?
Would you like to live with more JOY and EASE by reducing Anxiety and Stress?
Does it take a lot of time to be mindful? No. You are still doing everything you normally do – eating, walking, taking the children to school, driving to work etc., but with mindfulness, you are aware of your movements, your thoughts, your surroundings. You develop the ability to bring the busy mind back to whatever it is you are doing; to all these moments that make up your hours and days.
Mindfulness provides skills in dealing more helpful with lifes challenges
For instance – when washing the dishes (or placing them in the dish washer), you can concentrate on the movements required – notice the feel of warm, soapy water,

To date registrations are actually ahead of last year which was by far our biggest event to date so we are looking forward to another brilliant day of walking, jogging and running on the beach around Brandon Bay! Remember, online registration remains open on www.brandonbayhalfmarathon.com until midnight Thursday 18th July where you can also select race pack postage which will guarantee your t-shirt size and will see your race pack delivered to your door prior to the event. As always we will hold our walk in registration evening on Friday 19th July in the club rooms from 5-9pm, but as always t-shirts will be on a first come first served basis, with any shortfall being posted afterwards. Volunteers needed: if you are free on the day and would like to come along and help out please contact us on brandonbayhalfmarathon@gmail.com or through our Facebook page and let us know. We need almost 50 volunteers annually so the more the merrier!

Bringing a Dog or Cat into Ireland Question I am moving back to Ireland after several years in Germany. Am I allowed to bring my dog and cat home with me? Answer Strict controls are in place for bringing pets into Ireland to ensure that diseases such as rabies are not introduced. If you are moving to Ireland or coming on holiday you can bring your dog or cat with you. The EU system of Passports for Pets allows dogs, cats and ferrets to travel between EU member states. Any private veterinary practice can issue an EU Pet Passport which will certify that the pet is travelling from an eligible country, is identified by an implanted microchip and has been vaccinated against rabies at least 21 days before travel. Cats, dogs or ferrets coming from countries other than the UK, Finland or Malta must be treated against tapeworm between 24 and 120 hours before travel. The time and date of treatment are entered on the passport. Treatment for ticks is not compulsory, but it is advisable to get it at the same time as the tapeworm treatment. Registered airlines may choose to carry pets complying with the Pet Passport regulations. Compliant pets may travel on any ferry. The pet must travel with its owner or with a person acting on behalf of the owner (unaccompanied pets cannot travel to Ireland under the EU Pet Passport System). A list of frequently asked questions is available from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and for further information you can also contact the Citizens Information Centre. Poached Cod, Pea and Baby Gem Lettuce, Pea Cream Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School It might seem strange cooking lettuce but you will find this on some classical French recipes. You want to use crisp lettuce and try to cut it so you are cutting through the heart of lettuce. It is only added to the end of the dish so it is really only warmed up. This dish is such a light dish and is perfect for summer cooking. Ingredients for the poaching liquid 150g of chopped fennel/celery & leek 200ml of white wine 1 tbs. of lemon zest 1 tbsp. of fennel seeds 1 tbsp. of coriander seeds 1 tbsp. of ground black pepper
small bunch of chives finely chopped Method In a wide shallow pot add all of the ingredients for the liquid in a pot. Bring this to the boil and then simmer for about 15 minutes. Turn the heat down and gently place the fish into the liquid. Cover with parchment and keep it to a very gentle simmer. Meanwhile put another pot on over medium to low heat and add a little butter and add the shallots and add a pinch of salt. Cook this for about 5 minutes, add the milk then add the peas and cook this for about 2-3 minutes. Using a slotted spoon remove half of the pea and shallot mixture from the pot and put it in a blender. Add a some of the milk to the blender and the crème fraiche.
