Where Does The Time Go?

back on ten years of publishing. It was often chaotic, frequently hilarious, occassionally stressful but for the most part hugely satisfying. So that's the first decade done and dusted, and seeing as you're still putting the magazine into your shopping bags and reading our humble publication after all this time, sure we may as well stick with it! Thanks for reading. Here's to the future!

10 mBliana ar an Bhfód Leis an eagrán seo táimid ag ceiliúradh deich mbliana ó tháinig an chéad irisín beag 24 leathanach do Chorca Dhuibhne Beo/West Kerry Live ar an saol. Buíochas ó chroí leis na daoine ar fad a chabhraigh linn síos trísna blianta, na daoine ar fad a scríobhann duinn go rialta agus ó am go chéile agus na gnólachtaí ar fad a dheineann a gcuid fógraíochta linn. Nuair a thosnaíomair amach theastaigh uainn go mbeadh an nuachtiris mar chuid lárnach do shaol na dúthaí seo. Is leis an tacaíocht atá fachta againn uaibhse, pobal Duibhneach, atá sé sin bainte amach againn. Míle buíochas le Susan agus Fionnuala a chabhraigh chomh mór linn nuair a bhí cúrsa deacair sna chéad chúpla bliain agus a chuireann suas lenár ngiúmar agus oícheanta fada á gcaitheamh istigh san oifig ag iarraidh an iris a chur go dtí an cló. Our First Edition It's been ten years since we first drove around West Kerry with a carload of fresh magazines, nervously dropping bundles of them off to anywhere that would have us. A lot of groundwork went in to getting to that point but It was still a step into the unknown. Thankfully the reaction of the public to that first issue was largely positive, so we kept going. Two weeks later we managed to get another issue printed and made the same journey around Corca Dhuibhne, stocking the shelves with our latest effort; a collection of news on upcoming events, features, music listings and other bits and pieces. It's a journey we have had the pleasure of repeating every fortnight since. Twenty six times a year, come hail, rain or snow. And now we've clocked up 260 editions, a full decade's worth of gathering and spreading the news.

Theastaigh uainn guth a thabhairt don bpobal agus thugamar cuireadh daoibh bhur scéalta a roinnt linn agus do réir a chéile d’éirigh linn a leithéid a chur i gcrích agus is as san a thagann fiúntas na hirise . Taímid ag súil go mór leis an gcéad deich mbliana eile atá romhainn amach gus go leanóidh sibhse ag roinnt bhur scéalta linn. ‘Inis dúinne é agus inseoimid leis an saol mór é’ Míle buíochas, Lorcán, Mossy agus Aoife

We couldn't have kept it going without the input and support of you, the public of West and Mid Kerry. You have sent us in community notes, match reports, festival programmes, details of cake sales and fundraisers of all sorts, you have shared your photos with us - from camera phone snaps to faded black and white heirlooms, you have brought this local publication around the world and sent us the evidence, 260 of you have given us 60 seconds of your time to share with everyone else, you have given us opinions, advice and support, and of course you have picked the magazine up off the shelf religiously every fortnight for ten years. Míle míle buíochas. We are especially grateful to all of our regular contributers who help make this magazine what it is. So it's time for birthday cake and balloons here in the office as we look

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 9th July when the feature will be the Icelandic-Ukrainian comedy-drama Woman At War. The film folows Halla, a woman in her forties who declares war on the local aluminum industry to prevent it from disfiguring her country. She risks all she has to protect the highlands of Iceland-but the situation could change with the unexpected arrival of a small orphan in her life. The following week on Tuesday 16th July the feature will be the comedy drama Gloria Bell. Starring Julianne Moore and John Turturro the film tells the story of Gloria, a freespirited divorcée who spends her days at a straight-laced office job and her nights on the dance floor, joyfully letting loose at clubs around Los Angeles. After meeting Arnold on a night out, she finds herself thrust into an unexpected new romance, filled with both the joys of budding love and the complications of dating, identity and family.

Dingle Notes Richie Williams TIDY TOWNS. The Dingle Tidy Towns volunteers really appreciate the generous contributions from the public during their recent church gate collection. Donations or indeed unwanted plants or shrubs will be accepted at any time and put to good use in promoting our area for the benefit of locals and tourists alike. Thanks to the business outlets and private property owners in some streets and residential areas who are making great efforts with regular litter collections and general maintenance this year. Just a gentle reminder to other areas to please get out more often and help our efforts in all parts of town. Work Evenings on Mondays at 7p.m. meeting at the Bottle Bank. Bigi Linn!!!. SUMMER CAMPS. Campa Trad will be in the Pobal Scoil from July 22nd to 27th. Glaogh ar 0877563278 cun claru roimh re. The Annual Dingle GAA Summer Camp catering for ages 5 to 12 years will be held in Pairc An Aghasaigh from July 22nd to 26th and prior booking is recommended at 0876338124. Dingle Sailing Camps are ongoing from July 8th to August 12th catering for ages 6 to 10 years with prior bookings at 0877187557. Dingle Surf are organising Surf Camps for ages 7 to 16 years during July and August with booking at 0669150833 or online at dinglesurf.com. FILM FESTIVAL. Sad to hear that due to lack of financial support the Dingle International Film Festival will be substantially reduced in size in the future. However it is heartening to hear that Maurice Galway will continue working with Animation Dingle which has a funding source due to the growth in employment in that sector. Also long time local film activist Tor Cotton has agreed to continue working with Fisin the only competition for Irish Language short films in Ireland. Dingle really owes a sincere thanks to Maurice, Tor and many others who have worked tirelessly for the past 13 years in bringing the Festival to be one of the major film Festivals in the country. ELECTIONS. Belated congratulations to Seamus Cosaí Mac Gearailt and Michael O'Shea on their re-election and to Breandán Mac Gearailt on his first election to Kerry County Council. Breandan was also put in the hot seat as Chairman of the new Corca Dhuibhne/Castleisland Municipal District a job which will no doubt mean plenty travel and long days and nights to test his endurance!!. I wish to say thanks you to all the other unsuccessful candidates who put their names forward in the Council elections as it is great to see so many people prepared to get involved in local community affairs. Putting ones name forward in any public election can be a chastening experience but I hope that the results will not dampen their enthusiasm and committment to local and national affairs in the future. Molaim sibh go leir.

The Myth Business: Alma and Jeremiah Curtin in Dingle and Ventry, 1892 An illustrated lecture by Professor Angela Bourke, Professor emerita of Irish-Language Studies UCD Lecture venue: Dingle Skellig Hotel, Dingle. Date: Tuesday, 16th July, 8.00pm All welcome - Fáilte roimh chách - Visitors welcome Folktales published by Irish-American Jeremiah Curtin inspired W.B. Yeats and the Irish Revival of the 1890s, but his books said little of how, where or from whom he obtained the stories, and nothing about his wife, Alma, who did much of the work. The couple arrived in Dingle on 2 January 1892 in search of storytellers, and stayed in the area till late May. Angela Bourke will discuss their background, relationship and publications, drawing on Alma’s long-hidden diary and letters, and her photographs, to discover their movements and contacts in West Kerry, the art of the Irish-speaking storytellers they met, and how they made it pay. Angela Bourke is a frequent visitor to Dingle and Corca Dhuibhne. Her books include The Burning of Bridget Cleary: A True Story, Maeve Brennan: Homesick at The New Yorker, and the Famine Folio,Voices Underfoot: Memory, Forgetting, and Oral Verbal Art. Professor emerita of Irish-Language Studies at UCD, she has also taught at Harvard, Boston College and the University of Notre Dame and held many international fellowships.

Farming News Louis Murchan €13.4M BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME REFUND TO 98,000 FARMERS On Monday last, 1st July the payments commenced of over €13.4 million to approximately 98,000 farmers. This money was deducted from their 2017 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) payments under the Financial Discipline rule, and is now being reimbursed in line with the EU regulations. These payments totalling are now being reimbursed to all eligible farmers. will bring the total paid to Irish farmers under the 2018 Basic Payment Scheme to €1.19 billion”. In the context of the budgetary aspects of the BPS,each EU country makes a deduction (1.4% for the 2018 reduction) from some direct payments by way of a reserve fund. The crisis reserve is intended to provide additional support for the agricultural sector in the case of major crises affecting agricultural production or distribution. In the event that the Crisis Reserve is not activated in the financial year, or it is not fully utilised, the balance not used is refunded to farmers in the subsequent financial year, hence this reimbursement. FUNDING FOR AGRI-FOOD TOURISM PROJECTS Following a call for proposals for Agri-Food Tourism Initiatives under the 2019 Rural Innovation and Development Fund in May, it was recently announced that the twelve projects that will receive funding from his Department. Food Wise 2025 highlights the natural synergy between agri-food and local tourism. Agri-tourism is of great importance for rural areas, especially Dingle and its surrounds. In terms of landscape, history and culture through agricultural produce, food and drink and local cuisine. In addition, it provides opportunities for rural businesses, including farmers, producers and artisans, to develop their products and services, connect with the community and visitors and improve skills and best practice. Funding has been made available to over a dozen groups and organisations, including “Taste Kerry” who received €18,000. In the larger scheme of things, this is not a large amount of money, but these funds are available to all who apply with a valid application and proposal, so all of you with such a business, or a developed idea, consider this, next time! IoT FARM AMBASSADOR PROJECT It is noted that the Dingle Hub people are looking for Farm Ambassadors for one of their projects. This will involve being able to put yourself out-there, and act as a de facto representative of the group. You will be required to provide certain useful information relating to soil moisture, temperature, precipitation, wind speed and direction on the farm; and milk/slurry/oil-tank height monitoring. How useful this will be to them, depends on how the information is used, and to what end their goals are? However, these are people with past experience in developing systems and number-crunching the raw data, so they should well. The project will provide five inter-connected networks to enable local farmers to involve themselves with the technology and systems employed to deliver the data. Five farmers will be selected to implement a series of real IoT Use Cases, where their supplied data can be used for the greater good. For further detail, see placed ad in WKL, or contact The dingle Hub, directly at 066-9150140 RTÉ INVESTIGATION INTO THE GREYHOUND INDUSTRY Animal lovers are united in the horror the witnessed on tv, during the week. Prime Time’s expose on the treatment or mistreatment of greyhounds was appalling. Not everyone’s favourite pet, they are still dogs, and lovely dogs, at that. That they are treated in such a manner is unforgivable, and action must be taken. Junior Minister for Agriculture Andrew Doyle, T.D. (who has special responsibility for the greyhound sector), expressed his deep concern at the issues highlighted in the RTE Investigation of the 26th June 2019. Let us hope that this “deep concern” translates into action and prosecutions for any who purposefully and deliberately mistreated these poor animals. They are dumb, and they are not to everyone’s liking but they are just dogs. As evidenced by the programme, surely there is enough evidence to warrant a criminal investigation. This is the remit of Na Gardai Siochain, and one hopes that someone with sufficient experience and knowledge of these abuses will approach the Gardai and make a formal complaint. That is all that is needed to get a criminal investigation started. The new Greyhound Racing Act 2019 signed into law last month gives 10 West Kerry Live

Bord na gCon enhanced powers to make regulations for the traceability of greyhounds. The Board may make regulations to require the registration of greyhound owners, the registration of racing greyhounds and the notification by owners, breeders and trainers of greyhounds of many more life events than those currently captured on existing studbook and micro-chipping databases. The regulations will support the Board in its ambition to establish and maintain a new comprehensive tracing database for racing greyhounds and provides greater powers to deal with areas such as anti-doping, integrity and sanctions. The Department maintain that it has a strong and consistent record regarding the enforcement of animal welfare rules, including the review of 100 years of animal welfare legislation, leading to the enactment of the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2013. Let us hope (again) that they continue this “strong and consistent record”, and do the right thing. The culprits are known to certain parties, and it is only a matter of the names being handed over to the relevant authorities. A total of 73 successful prosecutions have been taken under the Act since it was brought in, with a further 30 prosecution files currently being processed for welfare abuses. According the DAFM, they does not issue certificates for the export of greyhounds to China or Pakistan, and maintain that no certificates were issued for the export of greyhounds from Ireland to either of those destinations, in recent years. The Minister also stated that the Department is engaging in a review of the licensing conditions in knackeries, with regard to practices seen on RTE. All allegations will be examined to determine the appropriate actions. Let us all hope and pray that we have seen the last of this maltreatment of poor animals, and that the authorities do the rest , thoroughly investigating these allegations and pressing charges, where appropriate. BOB THE OTTER. …..This last item may be familiar to some of you, and out-of-place to others as it is the first piece penned by this writer for WKL. To mark WKL’s 10th Anniversary, it is now reprinted in all its glory, to remind you of the early beginnings of this page. It wasn’t even called Farming News at the time, but was just some of the weird and wonderful ramblings of a sad and lonely old agriculture advisor. Sometimes there wasn’t even news, so we had to be inventive. I was (not) once told “ This is the West, sir. When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.” The font was even bigger and bolder, in those days, and the writing style less finished.. Say hello to Bob………….. You might ask what I know about otters, and I do know a wee bit. I grew up with one. He lived on the banks of the Borora River which flows through my father’s farm, that was until some engineering genius in the Board of Works decided to drain the river, and destroy the mammal and fish life that was so much in abundance there until the Summer of 1982. Anyway, this little fellow was there for years, so one of my brothers christened him Bob. After a while, Bob disappeared, not to be seen for months. When he appeared again, he had a small litter of three pups, so, you know the rest, Bob’s Your Uncle became Bob’s Your Aunt. That was until that moppet from the Board of Works blew it all to ...you know what, and he/she was never seen again. Years later, I moved to Kerry, and never thought about my little furry friend until, one evening walking along the marina with my trusty dog, I saw something “bobbing” in the water, an otter, and then thought my little friend had followed me. This happened two nights in a row, and the second night I had a flashlight, so I was sure it my old pal. And then, she was gone again. I didn’t see it for a few years after that, but it’s still here. Living and feeding, and hopefully breeding in Dingle Harbour. I was delighted to see it again last week, as I was beginning to think of him the way we think of imaginary friends. But he is there, and long live the otter, the madra uisce or Lutra lutra to give it, it’s Latin name. These are one of the largest land mammals in Ireland, but less common and more wary than badgers. They live in aquatic habitat, both fresh and saltwater, (which would explain Bob’s move from Shancarnan to Dingle). Mainly fish eaters, they also feed on small mammals, shellfish and even water-birds. Solitary animals, they are also territorial, keeping to a linear stretch of water-way, so you needn’t expect to see them travel in packs. Territories of males are bigger than female’s, and this depends on the food source available in a particular place. They are rarely seen, but sightings are most likely at dawn and dusk, on their way to and from hunting. They mark these territories with droppings, which are placed at prominent

locations, such as shore rocks, under bridges, and along riverbanks where noticeable flattening of bank growth is evident. Otters are nocturnal creatures, and are usually most active after dark, or just before first light. If a group of otters is seen, it is most likely a mother and her young pups, which average five or six. These stay with their mother for about six months before making new territories of their own. Their holt, as their home is called, is usually found along a riverbank, of under a nearby tree, built into the root system. Otters don’t like the limelight, but don’t confuse this with fear, as it is you who should be fearful of them. Like any wild animal, they don’t take to intruders kindly, and can be quite aggressive, if they have to be. But they only become so, if threatened, so my advice to any who sees my Bob, or any of his friends, enjoy the sight but keep your distance. They are not pets. We are a greater treat to them than they are to us. Roadkill, pollution and destruction of habitat are the main cause of their population decline over the years. Another is the continual clearing of riverbanks, such as the one done by my moppet friend all those years ago. For this reason, the REPS scheme should be applauded for protecting watercourses and in particular riverbanks under Measure 3, (Protection of Watercourses). Otters are protected species under Irish law, by the Wildlife Act and are also listed in the EU Habitats Directive as species of European significance requiring protection. Ireland has a higher population of otters than many EU countries, but that’s no boast, because the bar is set very low. This just means that these other countries treat their wildlife worse than us. But don’t worry about Irish or EU law, if you upset my Bob, you’ll have him and me to content with. I’ve already lost him once, and don’t intend losing him again. Why Spuds Will Always Be On The Menu!

We fell hard for the potato, almost like love at first sight and this dependence ultimately was at the root (pardon the pun) of the devastation caused when a blight infestation ruined our crops and led to the famine of 1845-1860. Prior to this grim time in,

Irene Ní Fhlannúra

we gained much from the nourishment derived from the potato - it was and still is almost a perfect food, providing complex carbohydrates, protein, fibre, vitamins and minerals. Today, we know that nutritionally speaking, potatoes offer an abundance of good stuff – vitamin C, fibre, potassium, vitamin B6, iron, magnesium and antioxidants. It is low in calories and sodium and a great source of fuel for both the mind and body.

Congratulations to West & Mid Kerry Live team for 10 years of delivering riveting reading! As a contributor since the very first edition, I would like to share one of my favourite articles. I enjoy the science and history of foods as much as learning of their health benefits so this article about our love of potatoes ticked all the boxes for me! With new season spuds back on our plates, let us have a look back to where it all began! Enjoy!

Modern Ireland has seen a decline in the consumption of potatoes over recent years as they have been vilified as a dirty carb, fattening and a driver of our obesity. Nothing could be further from the truth! In the 1800s, a British group of activists were dedicated to stamping out the potato. They called themselves “The Society for the Prevention of an Unwholesome Diet” or SPUD for short. Some claimed that this is the origin of the potato being called a spud! Like many of the food activists of today, their mission was unsubstantiated and flawed, more likely motivated by alternative food interests. Gardeners and farmers are busy digging the earlies and watching the main crop, with the luck of the Irish it will be bountiful and plenty. Our love story with the potatoes may not be as racy as Fifty Shades of Grey, yet we can be proud of our passion and enduring loyalty to the humble spud. In a fickle world of fad foods and trends, the potato is here to stay, now pass the butter, André! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health Clinic, Dingle 066 9151360. Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com

From the outside, our love for potatoes would seem questionable and misplaced considering the heartache and devastation we historically share. Yet, like all the great romances, ours too is one of twists and turns but somehow, we stuck it out and here we are, almost six hundred years after our introduction, inextricably connected despite a complicated relationship. In his landmark work “The History and Social Influence of the Potato”, published in 1949, British botanist and potato breeder, Redcliffe Nathan Salaman relays the remarkable impact the potato had on the countries and people that adopted it as a staple food as it journeyed from South America’s Incan territories throughout Europe in the late 1500s. The book details every aspect of the history of the potato with a particular focus on Ireland. He wrote “in no other country can potato’s influence on the domestic and economic life of the people be studied to greater advantage”.

Prior to the Great Famine of 1845 our relationship with the potato flourished. The tuber that was rejected by the British Empire as bitter and of the “devil’s realm” quickly established itself as our staple food making up for almost 80% of our daily calorific intake, which equated to seven to fourteen pounds of spuds a day! We loved them and they loved us, so much so, that from 1780 to 1840, following our adoption of the potato, the Irish population doubled from 4 million to 8 million. We grew bigger and stronger than our rural English counterparts who lived on bread. Infant mortality decreased and we were a healthy bunch for the most part.

Inflammation, Skin issues, Fatigue, Anxiety

For the scrawny peasants of rural Ireland back in the day, getting their hands on a feed of spuds was akin to a royal feast. Unlike the British, the Irish figured out that cooking them made them much more palatable, more digestible and the ease at which they grew in our climate made them an ideal alternative to the meagre grains and foraged foods we relied on. Even our folk medicine practitioners included them in their healing although some remedies were dubious. Raw, sliced potato was used to aid bruising and stop bleeding. Frostbite and sunburn was treated by applying raw potato to the affected area. A toothache was supposedly eased by carrying a potato in your pocket – this medic was struck off the register, as was his buddy who came up with putting a slice of cooked potato in a stocking and tying it around your neck to ease a sore throat! However, some of the old remedies lasted through time such as relieving aches and pains by rubbing the affected area with the water potatoes have been boiled in. Perhaps, this is where the idea of treating arthritic pain with poitín came from, although, I strongly suspect the alcohol provided the pain relief.

From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Fatality in Brandon Bay – (two versions) From – Kerry Evening Post, 25 May, 1907. Intelligence reached Tralee on Thursday of a mysterious drowning fatality off Brandon Point. From the information to hand, it appears two young men named Deady and O’Connor left Brandon Point in a canoe for Maharees Pier. Shortly after leaving the quay at Brandon both men were noticed disputing, apparently as to the fixing of a sail, and soon afterwards they disappeared overboard. The Coastguards quickly put out, but so far have failed to trace the bodies of the missing men. The canoe was not upset. And the general belief is that both men quarrelled and toppled overboard. [2nd version , same paper] Thomas O’Connor, Warren, Castlegregory and Micheal Deady, Maharees, were proceeding in a canoe under sail from Brandon to Maharees on the 22nd. About midway the wind changed; suddenly in the act of lowering the sail the canoe upset. Immediately several boats went to the rescue, but on their arrival at the scene of the disaster no trace of the poor fellows could be found. The canoe was discovered bottom upwards and was picked up by the Coastguards. The bodies have not yet been recovered. Loss of a trading smack From – Cork Constitution, 1 April, 1868. A large smack called the Eliza of Cork, foundered yesterday morning off Smerwick harbour. She sailed from Kilrush for Castletown Berehaven on Friday morning last with a cargo of potatoes. She reached the Blasket Sound on Saturday night but owing to the strong current there, both flood and ebb tides, and having no wind to assist her she was driven northwards as far as Smerwick harbour. Owing to the tossing she got while drifting to leeward she sprung a leak and was making water fast. At dawn yesterday morning she hoisted signals of distress but no help appeared. The crew clung to her to the last but had to abandon her at 9 o’clock. With much difficulty they landed at the north side of the harbour where they were warmly received and hospitably treated by Mr. Amick O’Sullivan, a native of Bantry, commissioned boatman in temporary charge of Ballydavid coastguard station. The coastguards at once put off in their boat, expecting to fall in with the derelict, but after a long pull and a fruitless search they had to give her up, so that she must have sunk in deep water. The vessel was not insured.

Captain’s Wife Saves Ship From – Dublin Morning Register, 22 January, 1840. The brig Alarm of Pool [Cornwall], laden with coal from Swansea for Limerick, out six days, put into Dingle harbour on the 14th with loss of bulwarks, sails and boat stove. She had a very narrow escape of being totally wrecked on Inch bar with, probably, the loss of all on board. The crew were so exhausted from pumping that on approaching Dingle harbour not a man on board was able to stand at the helm which was heroically taken by the captain’s wife and was safely steered by her into port. Former Cambridge coxswain drowned

From – North London News, 15 September, 1894. Mr. George Cole Baker was accidentally drowned at Rossbeigh last Sunday evening. He was visiting Rossbeigh with his wife and child, and on Sunday went for a sail alone in a flat-bottomed duck punt, about 12ft long, having one sail. The boat did not return, and a dark object was seen floating in Dingle Bay the following morning which proved to be the body of the deceased. An inquest was held on Tuesday, and the jury returned a verdict of accidental drowning, expressing sympathy with the widow and child. Mr. Baker was the son of a land agent who was shot in Tipperary during an agrarian agitation. He was educated at Cambridge and twice acted as coxswain in the great boat race. [ Cole was cox in 1886 and 1887 when Cambridge had successive victories over Oxford]. Loss of a Brigantine in Tralee Bay From – Cork Constitution, 7 February, 1870. During the gale on Wednesday morning last the Brigantine Martha of and from Newfoundland was driven on the Maharees and has become a total wreck. The crew, consisting of the Master and eight hands, were saved though with the loss of all their personal property. The Martha left St. Johns on the 1st January with an assorted cargo of oil, salmon, cod and herrings for the English markets. After twelve days at sea she was caught in a squall and lost all her canvas leaving her almost entirely at the mercy of winds and waves. The crew laboured as well as they could until they got sight of our coast. When in Brandon Bay they attempted to anchor but found the anchors did not hold and the ship drifted on to the lee shore. The crew then took to their boat and succeeded in getting ashore. The brigantine went ashore on a sandy beach at the Maharees. Her stern has been entirely broken away and not a third of the cargo has been saved. Both ship and cargo were insured at Lloyds.

The popularity of Handball as a one of the fastest growing sports in Kerry was highlighted at the weekend when the Kerry Handball Board promoted the One Wall Juvenile County Championships. The championships were expertly hosted by the Spa Handball Club at their base in the magnificent sports hall at the Spa G.A.A. Grounds in Killarney. The club boasts two state of the art indoor handball walls which were designed and built by local player and sportsman Mike Casey and opened in May 2018 by Junior Sports Minister, Brendan Griffin. The most impressive performance on the day was in the Under 12 Boys championship where Jamie Lynch and Liam Sheehy (Lispole) outclassed the opposition to win their first Kerry championship and ensured Lispole were in the medal table. Both players have a bright future in the game. “We were delighted with the success of the event and in particular the standard of Handball played by the young players aged from Under 10 to Under 13. Clubs taking part were Lispole, Glenbeigh and Ballymacelligott. Tionscadal Píolótach Ambasadóir Feirme

An mbeadh spéis agatsa bheith mar ceannródaí teicneolaíochtaí feirme amach anseo? Tá Mol Teic Daingean Uí Chúis bainteach le tionscadal píolótach iontach feirme nua, i gcomhpháirt le Kerry Agribusiness, Teagasc agus Net Feasa. An aidhm atá ag an dtionscadal seo ná Idirlíon na nEarraí [IoT] a lonnú ar roinnt feirmeacha i gCorca Dhuibhne chun feabhas a chur ar éifeachtacht charbóin, chomh maith le sábháil a dhéanamh ar chostais agus obair. Táimid ag lorg cúigear ambasadóir feirme chun cabhrú linn triail a bhaint as seifteanna éifeachtachta a d’fhéadfadh cabhrú linn ar fad druidim i dtreo todhchaí ísealcharbóin. Geobhfaidh gach ambasadóir feirme roinnt teicneolaíochtaí braiteora ar a fheirm, braiteoirí a chabhródh le bainistíocht feirme tré thomhas ar thaise chré, airde bhainne, airde aoiligh agus airde íle/díosail san áireamh.

Ba mhaith linn go mbeidh an pobal feirmeoireachta ar fad ar Chorca Dhuibhne in ann foghlam ón eolas a thiocfaidh as seo, agus ar an mbunús sin beidh ar ambasadóirí a bheith páirteach in imeachtaí poiblíochta mar chuid den tionscadal. San áireamh anseo, ach ní teoranta chucu, beidh tacaíocht ar na meáin chumarsáide, agallaimh raidió, grianghraif agus scannánaíocht. Rithfidh an clár ambasadóra ar feadh tréimhse bliana agus beidh ar iarrthóirí glacadh le bheith páirteach ar feadh iomlán na tréimhse sin. Tabhair cuairt ar www.dinglehub.com/ chun do spéis sa tionscadal seo a léiriú, nó cuir r-phost chuig info@dinglehub.com nó cuir glaoch ar Deirdre de Bhailís ar 066 9150140 faoi 25 Iúil 2019 chun é a phlé a thuilleadh

Tinteán Ceol Thar Sáile On June 22nd in Old Saybrook, on the Connecticut south shore, Steve Robson and Rich Carter hosted a Tinteán Ceol. Steve and Rich had attended the Tinteán Ceol in Cloghane and were very impressed with the concept. They subsequently decided to have the first Tinteán Ceoil in Connecticut. Neighbours, friends and family participated in this event. In attendance was Old Saybrook locals Robert Emmet Deane, John Deane Guimond and Ann Whitall, all of whom had already attended the Tinteán Ceol in Cloghane on a few occasions. West Kerry was represented by Helen NicGearailt and Seosaimh Ó Dhuibhne. Irish ballads and a selection of music was heard coming from the old chapel on Old Boston Post road. Scones had been baked and were eaten at the half time break. A magnificent evening was had by all. This event was influenced by the renowned Tinteán Ceoil in Cloghane which is now located in Halla Le Chéile. Naturally the West Kerry Live had to make an appearance.

New Chapter For Dingle Marina Centre In the late eighties and early nineties major works were carried out to improve Dingle Harbour. These dredging works created the present deep water berths, navigable channel and breakwaters which provide access to and shelter for the piers. Marina berths were provided on the Western side of the new harbour. When the work was completed there were no facilities for showers toilets or the development of marine leisure activities. The harbour had an active Naomhog Rowing club and a developing sailing club and the new marina was becoming a visitor attraction to visiting yachts from all over Ireland and the world. Lack of facilities, including the lack of shower and toilet facilities was constraining its development. Dingle Harbour Commissioners did not have the financial resources at that time to put proper facilities in place. A local committee of volunteers (Lathair Muirina an Daingin Teo) was formed consisting of representatives of the Harbour Commissioners, the Rowing Club, Sailing Club andNails Tralee Sub HD Brows €35 Ireland’sAqua #1 Brow Treatment. There are now up to twenty people employed in the centre and its environs in the summer period After twenty years of operating the centre, the Board which is made up of Eddie Hutch (Chairman), Maunsa Heidke, John R. The board wished to ensure the future of this important piece of infrastructure and guarantee its continued success. An assessment of future options for the management of the building was carried out. The board were concerned that their focus had now become the management of the building rather than the development of the clubs. next 12 months. On Thursday and Friday last, the Dingle Hub played host to the StoreNet project team. The StoreNet project has installed battery storage technology in 20 homes in Ballyferriter and aims to reduce energy costs for residents, relieve pressure on the grid during peak times and contribute to our transition to a sustainable energy future. This research project is a collaboration between Electric Ireland, ESB Networks, Solo Energy and the International Energy Research Centre (IERC). The team reviewed initial results from the project and visited some of the battery installations in homes over the course of the two days. Homeowners are already experiencing reductions in their energy bills by simply storing energy on the cheaper night rate tariff while customers who also have Solar PV are seeing significant savings. Early data from this project reinforces the debate that batteries are very likely to form part of the overall energy solution for the future and we look forward to the learning that will be gained from this work over the course of the

A lover has been lost, a daughter has gone missing, their world has come asunder - can it be put together again? Night Boat to Tangier is a novel drenched in sex and death and narcotics, in sudden violence and old magic. But above all, it is a book obsessed with the mysteries of love. News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Ladies Open sponsored by Dingle Distillery There was a serious buzz about Ceann Sibéal when the Dingle Distillery sponsored Open took place on Wednesday 26th June - a very successful event. 88 Ladies participated with Members from 17 different Clubs playing. All were very complimentary about the Course, Catering and not least the welcome they received. It is likely that many will return. The course with a northerly breeze provided a stiff challenge but Tara Uí Chualáin was up for it on the day with a remarkable score of 46 points – terrific on the day. The sponsorship by Dingle Distillery – their first for the Ladies’ Club was very generous and many of our visitors booked accommodation locally bringing valuable revenue to the locality. Hopefully an event which will become an annual feature in the calendar. Comórtais Toyota Timesheets are now open for the wonderful Toyota competitions starting on Saturday 6th July with an Open Singles Stableford competition which will cater for Ladies and Gents (with a Seniors Over 55 Competition for Gents). On the following weekend, there will be an Open 14 Hole 3 Person Scramble followed on Saturday by an Open 3 Person Team Event. The final event will be an Open Fourball event with any combination. Saturday night 13th July will see a presentation of the excellent prizes generously sponsored by Toyota. Michelle Sharkey Our members were delighted to see Michelle Sharkey’s recent successes, not least her selection on the Munster Under 18 team (at the age of 14). It was clear over the past few years that Michelle has a great future and she was gracious in acknowledging the coaching and mentoring she received from Muiríde Uí Chruadhlaoich and the late Liam Duggan during the Junior Programme.

Cromane News Jane Casey UNDER-14s: Under-14 Central Region Division 2 (full-time): GGC 4-11, Castlegregory 2-9 The Glenbeigh-Glencar/Cromane (GGC) Under14s made it two wins in a row in the Central Region last Wednesday evening. On a beautiful evening for football, a strong second half sealed their victory. The sides were level at 2-5 apiece at the break but two secondhalf goals from Jack McGrath secured a fine win for the GGC lads. Further points from Keith Moriarty and Ryan O'Connor added some gloss to the display. In the first half, GGC made a fine start with an early Brian Cahill goal before Castlegregory got back into the game with a series of lovely scores. Some good defending from Colm Kingdon and Conor Hayes in addition to a number for excellent Jamie Casey saves kept GGC ahead before a late first-half Castlegregory goal meant the sides were level at the break. After the restart GGC with the aid of a light breeze stamped their authority on the game. Well done lads. The GGC under-14s played An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus last Monday, July 1, in their round 3 game in this competition. Their final game in the division is against Castleisland Desmonds (at home on Monday, July 8). Both games throw-in at 7pm. They won their opening game against Milltown-Castlemaine by a point, 3-8 to 3-7. Scorers: Jack McGrath 3-7, Brian Cahill 1-0, Fionn O’Sullivan, Keith Moriarty, Ryan O’Connor, Darragh Crosby 0-1 each. as well. This year's chosen beneficiaries are: The Maharees Conservation Association, Friends from Ireland Charity, Aughacashla National School and Scoil Náisiúnta an Clochán, so by taking part your entry goes to support all of these fantastic groups as well as the local soccer club who have gone from strength to strength in recent years thanks to the fantastic support given to this event, winning Denny Division 1B this season and gaining promotion to division 1A of the Kerry District League. Entry into the Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k is open on www. brandonbayhalfmarathon.com and costs €30/€40 for the 10k/half marathon respectively and includes an event tech tee, bespoke event medal, race number and timing chip for all participants. We will also hold a walk-in registration evening on Friday 19th July from 5-9:30pm in the club rooms in Castlegregory for anyone that doesn't register online (note - no registrations possible on the day given the remote location of the race!) Last year's event was the biggest to date with over 500 registered to walk, jog or run on the beach with us, and numbers to date are on a par with last year so we are expecting another fantastic day on the beach on Saturday 20th July.

The 6th annual Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k event will take place on Saturday 20th of July on the beach around beautiful Brandon Bay. Once again the event will see hundreds of participants from all over the globe come to Brandon Bay to be part of Ireland's original ALL BEACH half marathon & 10k. Set entirely on the Wild Atlantic Way and surrounded by the beauty of the Slieve Mish mountains and Mt Brandon itself, the event is a really unique one as participants never leave the beach from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave! For anyone tired of tarmac and looking for a new challenge, the Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k is definitely one for the bucket list! The race both starts and finishes at Fahamore on the Maharees (near Spillane's Bar) and is set on what is known as an 'out and back' style course where participants both start and finish the race at the same place having ran out and then returned to complete both distances. All on the beach - what a challenge! The event, as always, is organised by Castlegregory Celtic FC as a fundraiser and is entirely not-for-profit with all proceeds going not only to the soccer club but also to many other community groups and international charities

Camp Notes Brigid O’ Connor GAA And the tradition of winning football medals continues in Camp, Annascaul clubmen, James Crean and Andrew Finn, Knockgloss beg brought home 2 Munster medals on Wednesday night when Kerry Juniors defeated Cork in the Munster final at Pairc Uí Finn. Congratulations and good luck to James and Andrew in the final. IRISH DANCING CHAMPION Caoimhe Cawley, Meenascorthy, Camp competed in Craobhacha Rince Náisiúnta na hÉireann in City west Dublin recently qualifying to compete in oíreachtas Rince na Cruinne 2020. Caoimhe beat off strong competition, 132 dancers in all competed in her category. Caoimhe is no doubt following in the footsteps of her Aunt Mairead O Connor and her mother Katie both Champion Irish Dancers. Congratulations Caoimhe and good luck in the finals. OBITUARIES The death of Sr. Catherine Herlihy, Order of The Holy Family, Tullamore and formerly of Knockglossmore, Camp occurred recently. Sr. Catherine entered the convent from Camp school, at a very young age and devoted her entire life to the service of others. Sr. Catherine or Kitty as she is known to us in Camp began her novitiate in France during World War 2, a very troubled period of German occupation. In a very short time she mastered the language, becoming fluent in French. She became a teacher and was dedicated to the provision of education to all children, no matter what circumstances or backgrounds they came from. Sr. Catherine spent some years with the order in London in her teaching ministry and finally retired home to the House of The Holy Family Order in Tullamore where she was to end her days very content and happy, back in her home country. Sr. Catherine had reached a great old age and after a very fulfilled life she passed away peacefully and is laid to rest in the local cemetary in Tullamore. Rest In Peace. Her sisters Bridie and Betty and brother Sean predeceased her. Sr. Catherine is survived by her sister Sr. Brendan and her brother Paud, nieces, nephews, Grand nieces and nephews and large extended family and friends to whom sympathy is extended. The news of the death of Jimmy Kennedy, Maum, Camp and New York was met with deep sadness in Camp on Tuesday June 25. Jimmy passed away peacefully in Tarrytown, New York surrounded by his entire family in New York and from Ireland. Jimmy was very popular growing up at home, he a great sense of humour, always joking and good fun and all of us friends and neighbours have fond memories of him going to Camp school.

Jimmy was hard working and ambitious and in a short few years, along with his two brothers Paddy and Tom, the Kennedy Brothers established a very successful construction company contributing hugely to the building industry of the city spanning 40 years. Jimmy is survived by his wife Patricia and their six children Patrick (Meaghan) Bridie, William (Dara), James, John and Thomas, Grandchildren, Braden, Declan, Charlotte, Reagan, Riley and John. Jimmy is also survived by his brothers Johnny, Paddy and Tom as well as nieces, nephews, his sisters-inlaw and many friends, sympathy is extended to all. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Bridie, sister Hannah Kennedy, Cournane and nephew, Patrick. R.I.P. Jimmy was laid to rest on Friday last in The Gate of Heaven Cemetery, New York following requiem Mass in The Church of The Transfiguration. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace. RADIO KERRY VISITS OCEAN VIEW Sean Hurley and Eileen Moynihan recorded a wonderful programme at Ocean View Nursing Home on Thursday evening. Musicians Milo O'Brien, Pat Finn and Josephine Raftery entertained and Kyle Benson and Gearóid Evans from Keel sang 2 lovely songs. Liam Fenix, well known in his shop in the Square, Tralee and now retired to Ocean View gave a crystal clear account of Kerry football and the Tralee clubs he supported down through the years. Asked on his opinion of the Best Kerry Footballer of all time, Liam gave the honour to Annascaulman Paddy Kennedy ! The Brandon Bay HM/10k event: The Brandon Bay half marathon & 10k: we are now just over 3 weeks away from the Brandon Bay half marathon and 10k event 2019 which will take place on Saturday 20th of July. As always, online registration is open on the website www. brandonbayhalfmarathon.com where you can also choose a 'race pack postage' option this year. This option allows you to choose your t-shirt size and have your race pack sent directly to you before the event takes place! Very handy for anyone travelling a long way to join us, and an option that is proving hugely popular. We will also be holding our walk in registration and race pack collection evening on Friday 19th from 5-9:30pm in the club rooms. Looking forward to seeing a huge crowd again this year. Remember, the Brandon Bay event is a not-for-profit event and all proceeds go to Castlegregory Celtic FC, Maharees Conservation Association, Friends Solar Systems from Ireland charity, Aughacasla NS and Scoil Náisiúnta an Clochán. Electric Scooters Question Travelling to my office through city traffic is taking me longer because of increased congestion. Can I travel by electric scooter instead? Answer An electric scooter (sometimes called an e-scooter) is a small platform with two or more wheels that is propelled by an electric motor. The rider can also propel the electric scooter forward by pushing off the ground. Electric scooters and electric skateboards fall into the category of ‘mechanically propelled vehicles’ (as defined in the Road Traffic Act 1961). If a vehicle can be powered by mechanical or electrical power alone, then it is considered to be a ‘mechanically propelled vehicle’. Under Irish road traffic law, people using such vehicles in a public place must have insurance, road tax and a driving licence. There are penalties under road traffic laws (including fixed charge notices, penalty points, fines and possible seizure of the vehicle) for not being in compliance with these requirements. As it is currently not possible to tax or insure electric scooters or skateboards, they are not considered suitable for use in public places. However, the Road Safety Authority is carrying out research as to how electric scooters and other such vehicles are regulated in other countries, particularly in other EU member states. The goal is to understand the road safety implications of the use of such vehicles on public roads, especially when interacting with other vehicles. You can read frequently asked questions about electric vehicles on rsa.ie. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below. Bhí an láthair champála lán le pubaill agus na Gaeil ar fad cruinnithe sa phríomhghort ag cadráil agus ag cibeal le chéile ar chúrsaí an t-saoil is ag éisteacht le ceol. Chrochamair an puball agus amach linn le ruathar chun a bheith i measc na nGael. An chéad bhanna ceoil a chualamair ná Niteworks. Is banna ó Oiléan Sciathanach iad á mhunlaíonn ceol traidisúnta na hAlbain le fuaimeanna leictreonacha. Bhíodar thar na bearta. Ba é Scannal an Banna deiridh chun stáitse agus bhog an t-ardán trasna an bhóthair isteach go dtí an t-ionad pobail i Ráth Chairn, an Bradán Feasa. Bhí sé plódaithe. B’shin an áit go bhfan an slua ann don gcuid eile don oíche. An mhaidin dar gcionn bhí bús imeachtaí ar súil. Bhí Oireachtas na Féile ar siúl, go gcan agus go n-inis daoine éagsúla scéalta ann. Bhaineas féin ana-thaithneamh as an Cabaret Queereálta. Is grúpa ó Dhoire iad a chuireann coiméide le chéile nach raibh bun ná barr leis ach a bhí lán do bheocht agus do ghreann. Bhí an ócáid ‘Reic’ ar siúl - ina dtugtar ardán oscailte d’fhilí agus ceoltoirí a gcuid saothar a aithris go hoscailte. Is ardán ilteangach atá i gceist le Reic agus is rud iontach an deis seo a thabhart do dhaoine. Is sinn go meidhreach ag déanamh isteach ar an iarnóin, bhí gliondar orainn cáilín dár gcuid féin ó Iarthar Dhuibhne a chlos ar an stáitse - Meabh Ní Bheaglaoich. Bhí daoine ag éirí súgach go maith fén dtráth seo agus bús ceoil ann. Chomh maith le Meabh, bhí an Connallach Emma Ní Fhioruisce ar stáitse. Chuaigh an slua le gealaígh nuair a tháinig an bheirt Feiristeach, Kneecap chun stáitse. Fuair an bheirt aitheantas an chéad lá riamh leis an rap ‘C.E.A.R.T.A.’ Is don ‘gcraic’ a scríobhadar é agus iad ag dul ó neart go neart ó shin. Bhí seó dá gcuid díolta amach ag Féile na Bealtaine sa Daingean i mbliana. Chríochnaigh an oíche le Dáithí agus mar aon leis an Aoine, sall linn arís go dtí an Bradán Feasa. Is féidir liom á rá le croí mór go raibh ard-deireadh seachtaine agam i gContae na Mí. Níor chosain sé an t-uafás dul ann– timpeall €75 ar an dticéad, timpeall ar €100 idir chostaisí taistil, bia agus deoch. Bhí togha an bhídh ar fáil ann ó nachos go burger go crepeanna. Ach an rud ba mhó ná i measc an 300 duine gur bheag Béarla a bhí le

clos, rud a thug ardú meanmna dom. Tréaslaím go mór leis an lucht eagair mar táthar ag brath ar am deonach chun a leithéid d’ócáide a chur le chéile. Táim cheana féin ag tnúth le filleadh an bhliain seo chugainn! (Buíochas do Orla Ní Shíthigh as an alt seo)

Devil Chocolate Cake Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Big Congratulations and Happy Birthday to the team at West Kerry Live. I think everyone would agree that West Kerry Live is such an important part of the community and has been for the past ten years. Well done to all of the team and here's to the next ten years. To celebrate their 10th birthday I have included a special cake. I would encourage all of you to give this a go and use it for special occasions (like this). I can’t lie, it is very rich, it is full of calories, but why not treat yourself every now and then? Ingredients for the cake 105g butter (plus a little for greasing the tins) 75g dark cocoa powder (plus a little for dusting the tins) 80ml boiling water 150 milk 335g caster sugar 1 tbsp. pure vanilla extract 3 eggs, lightly beaten 280g flour 1 tsp. baking soda pinch of salt for the frosting 85ml water 20g dark brown muscovado sugar 120g butter 200g good quality dark chocolate for the chocolate shavings

1 bar of good quality dark chocolate

for the chocolate shavings

Method

Place in the fridge for about a half an hour, place the chocolate bar on a chopping board. Take a large knife and using two hands drag it back along the chocolate to give you chocolate shavings. This can be done beforehand and kept in a plastic container until needed.

for the cake Preheat the oven to 170ÂşC degrees. Arrange two racks in centre of oven. Butter two 8-inch round cake pans and line with parchment paper. Dust the bottoms and sides of pans with cocoa powder, tap out any excess. Sift all of the remaining cocoa powder into a bowl, and whisk in the boiling water. Allow this to cool. Once it has cooled whisk in the milk to this mixture. Add the butter to the bowl of a mixer with a paddle attachment, turn this on a low speed. This will cream the butter, add the sugar in stages and allow this all to mix together. Scrape down the sides and add the vanilla, turn the mixer back on again and add in the eggs one at a time. Make sure to scrape down the sides every now and then. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda and salt.

to assemble Place one cake on a plate, spread a generous amount of frosting over the cake. Add the second cake on top (when adding the second cake remember to turn it over so that the flat part becomes the top of the cake). Spread a generous amount of frosting over the top layer. Spread some around the sides and use a spatula to spread the frosting evenly over the sides and top. Add some chocolate shavings to decorate. Bain taitneamh as!!!

Turn the mixer on a slow speed and add some of the flour mixture and then some of the cocoa mixture, keep doing this in small stages until all of both are incorporated. Divide the mixture evenly between the two cake tins. Bake this for about 40 minutes or until a skewer comes out clean. Once ready place the tin on a wire rack. After about 20 minutes turn out the cake and allow them to cool completely. for the frosting This can be done while the cake is in the oven. Put the water, muscovado sugar and butter in a small pot over low heat. Once the butter has melted take the mixture of the heat and add in the chocolate. Allow it to settle and then use a spatula to mix it gently until it has all come together. Leave this for about 1 hour, whisking now and again. This mixture will now be ready to apply over the cake.

Toy Story 4

Pierce Hoare After the spectacular ending of Toy Story 3, I felt any attempt at another sequel would fail to come anywhere near as good. Then, nine years later, Toy Story 4 comes out and proves me wrong. I went into the film expecting to be disappointed, but left feeling as though it was as good as, if not better than, Toy Story 3. The animation in the movie is stunning, but I expect nothing less from Pixar at this point. The rain and water looked photorealistic and the detail in all the locations was incredible. As for the plot of the film, it follows Woody as he tries to adapt to his new life without Andy. He must also keep his new owner, Bonnie, happy and mentor her new makeshift toy Forky. The movie is full of fun action scenes and jokes ranging from oddly dark to lighthearted. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Pixar film if it didn’t try to make you cry, and this film definitely goes all out in that area. The voice acting in the film is another thing to note, as Tim Allen and Tom Hanks both do amazing jobs as Buzz and Woody, with added breathtaking performances from Keanu Reeves and Key & Peele. Before going to see Toy Story 4, I’d recommend watching the previous three films for two reasons: To see how far the 3D animation has come since 1995, and to be caught up on the story up to this point. After this, if Pixar announced a fifth Toy Story, I wouldn’t even question how they’d follow it up. Well worth the watch for all ages. Pierce Hoare is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne
