Ancient Town of High Renown

Dingle Historical Society Plaques in Dingle Town After the successful visit of Chester Model Railway Club in 2005, organised by Dingle Historical Society - their model of Dingle Railway proved to be extremely popular - the society decided to put up a plaque to The Dingle Train in 2006. In association with Camino Chorca Dhuibhne a plaque to commemorate the link between Dingle and Compostela in Spain was erected in 2007. This was followed by plaques to the Treaty of Dingle in 2009 and Marie Antoinette in 2010. With funding from Kerry County Council a plaque to remember the Dingle workhouse was erected in 2011 and the remaining eight plaques were put up in 2019. The wording for plaques was put together by a large group of people - Dr Declan Downey, UCD; Dr Ivar McGrath, UCD; Dr David Dixon, TCD; Canon Jack McKenna, Finbarr O'Shea, Mícheál Ó Dubhshláine, Micheál Ó Coileáin, Isabel Bennett, Breandán Ó Ciobháin, Dr Conor Brosnan, Pat Neligan, Bernie Goggin, Celeste Slye, Toosie Cotter, Liz Higgins, Tom Fox. Special thanks has to be given to Peter Malone, editor, for proofreading the english text and to Breandán Ó Ciobháin for the leagan Gaeilge. Gearóid Mac Gearailt, KCC, has to be thanked for his great interest in taking on the project and bringing it to its conclusion, along with Denis O'Connor and his KCC crew who took great care in erecting the plaques. It would not have been done without the council. Thanks also to the owners of the buildings who allowed us to place plaques on their property. This series of plaques complements the older ones in town. The purpose of the plaques is to highlight aspects of the towns history for locals and visitors alike.

Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 6th August will be the comedy drama Eight Grade. The film deftly encapsulates the awkwardness, angst, self-loathing and reinvention that a teenage girl goes through on the cusp of high school. Eighth Grade takes a look at its titular time period that offers a rare and resounding ring of truth as thirteen-year-old Kayla endures the tidal wave of contemporary suburban adolescence as she makes her way through the last week of middle school--the end of her thus far disastrous eighth grade year before she begins high school.

The following week on Tuesday 13th August the feature will be the documentary Pavarotti. From the filmmaking team behind the highlyacclaimed documentary The Beatles: Eight Days A Week - The Touring Years, Pavarotti is a riveting film that lifts the curtain on the icon who brought opera to the people. Academy Award winner Ron Howard puts audiences front row and centre for an exploration of The Voice...The Man...The Legend. Luciano Pavarotti gave his life to the music and a voice to the world. This cinematic event features history-making performances and intimate interviews, including never-before-seen footage and cutting-edge Dolby Atmos technology in an entertaining tribute to a towering cultural figure. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes Richie Williams WELCOME. We begin this week by sending out a big Céad Míle Fáilte to two ladies who have recently taken up responsable roles in the Corca Dhuibhne area. Sergeant Lynda Brosnan joint Sgt Martin Allen as the personnal in charge of the Garda Affairs in the Peninsula. We wish them both and the other members of an Garda Siochana well in the execution of their duties which are always in the interest of public safety and law and order in our community. Ms Tara O'Carroll has recently taken up the role of Engineer with responsibility for the West Kerry Area based in the Kerry County Offices in Dingle. Another very responsible position for the upkeep, maintenance and development of the vast network of roads , facilities and services under her remit in the Peninsula. Go n-eirí leat Tara. A huge thank you to the departing engineer Colm Nagle who has been deeply involved in many successful projects in the Peninsula during his time with us over the past 10 years. BUSINESS. The Business Chamber wish to welcome another new business The Little Italy Restaurant and Pizzeria based in Orchard Lane. Great to see another addition to the food trade which provides increased choice for the consumer and extra employment in our town. Recent newspaper commentry named The Global Village, Dingle Reel Dingle Fish and the Fish Box as among the top 20 outlets to visit for holidaymakers and highlights the high quality and standards which our business outlets are noted for nationally. HISTORICAL SOCIETY. The third of this year's Summer Lectures will be held in the Sceilig Hotel on Tuesday August 13th. This features an illustrated lecture by Dr Conor Brosnan on The Great Famine in the Dingle Peninsula 1845-1851 a topic very much discussed which left a huge mark on most local families right up to the present day. EXHIBITION. An exhibition on the life of Lispole born patriot Tomas Aghas will be on display in Dingle Library until the end of August and is well worth a visit. It certainly highlights the huge part one persons belief and actions can have at both national and international levels. THEATRE. The award winning show based on a local fish story continues in the Beehive Theatre in Cooleen up until August 11th. Matinee sessions are available on Saturdays at 2p.m. and adult sessions on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays with prior booking recommended. SUMMER CAMPS. We encourage everybody to support this wonderful occasion at least once during the 3 day programme and well done to the hard working organisers for their commitment to ensuring the continued success of the weekend. TIDY TOWNS. Work Evenings continue on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. A big complaint from visitors again this year is the amount of cigatette butts on the streets particularly outside the licenced premises. We appeal to the owners/ operators to make a better effort by cleaning up the areas immediately outside their premised a few times daily

The Great Famine in the Dingle Peninsula 1845-1851 An illustrated lecture by Dr Conor Brosnan Lecture venue: Dingle Skellig Hotel, Dingle. Date: Tuesday, 13th August, 8.00pm Dr Brosnan’s talk will cover pre-famine Dingle Peninsula, previous famines, the Protestant Mission, the importance of potato to diet and the arrival of blight. He will discuss the local, regional and national relief efforts by the British Government and private charities as the crisis progressed. He will talk about the necessity of travelling to Tralee Workhouse in the initial years of the famine until local temporary workhouses were set up. Dr Brosnan will discuss employment on public works, soup kitchens and relate details of diseases, deaths, evictions and emigrations from local history books in English and Irish, newspaper accounts and research in the National Archives of Ireland. The lecture will conclude on some of the legacies of the famine - change in diet, later marriage age, increase in incidence of mental illness and the widely held sentiment that the British establishment were largely to blame for the crisis. Dr Conor Brosnan has worked as a GP in Dingle for over 20 years. He has a particular interest in skin surgery, dermatology, dermatoscopy and sports medicine. Conor is a member of the John Street Wren, the Dingle Fife and Drum Band, the Dingle Historical Society and the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society. He has given lectures on Admiral Sylverius Moriarty, Shipwrecks of the Dingle Peninsula, Smuggling in Dingle in the Eighteenth Century and the Massacre at Dún an Óir in 1580. Farming News

proposals need to be considered further in the context of the current and future challenges facing the sector;

Louis Murchan

1. Ongoing research in fertiliser formulation provides an opportunity for both environmental and climate benefit. The use of inhibitor technology to reduce the losses from fertilisers provides a significant environmental and climate opportunity. This should be reviewed further as part of the next NAP.

NEW €100 MILLION BEEF EXCEPTIONAL AID MEASURE (BEAM) Details of the Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM) were recently announced. This scheme will be funded by a combination of EU and Irish funding and will amount to €100 Million. It is provided in light of the difficult circumstances that Irish beef farmers have been facing as a result of market volatility and uncertainty arising out of Brexit. BEAM will provide financial aid to Irish beef farmers and is targeted towards those farmers most affected. BEAM is also designed to meet the requirements set out by the Commission, including granting support to farmers engaging in actions which enhance their long-term resilience and sustainability. BEAM is a demand-led, voluntary scheme. Farmers who meet the initial eligibility criteria will then have to commit to meeting the following conditions in order to qualify for aid. Each participant must be a member of a Bord Bia Quality Assurance Scheme or a DAFM environmental scheme; and reduce the production of bovine livestock manure nitrogen (total figure) per herd by 5% for a target period (1 July 2020 - 30 June 2021) compared to a reference period (1 July 2018 – 30 June 2019). Aid will be paid on adult cattle slaughtered between 24 September 2018 and 12 May 2019, at a rate of €100 per animal subject to a maximum of 100 finished animals per herd. Aid will also be paid on suckler cows that calved in 2018, at a rate of €40 per animal subject to a maximum of 40 sucklers per herd. Dairy herds are not eligible for the measure, with the exception of dairy herds of less than 40 dairy cows. Smaller dairy farms typically have a mixed farming enterprise, with a lower than average dairy farm income, and a beef enterprise accounting for a higher proportion of total farm income. Animals controlled by slaughtering establishments, and dealer/agent herds, are not eligible for this financial aid.

2. There are environmental pressures at a catchment scale which can be attributed to intensification of agriculture. Intensively stocked dairy grazing platforms need further review in the context of the next NAP. 3. 65% of the bovine livestock in the country are on farms at stocking rates > 130 kgs/ha. The review group do not consider this group to be intensive however the next Nitrates Action Programme review should examine opportunities for this cohort to reduce their environmental footprint and contribute to the climate and water challenges. 4.

Measures to support improved biodiversity on all farms

WATER ABSTRACTION REGISTRATION WITH EPA The Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government launched a register of water abstractions in accordance with the European Union (Water Policy) (Abstractions Registration) Regulations 2018 (S.I. No. 261 of 2018) in August 2018. People who abstract 25 cubic meters (25,000 litres) of water or more per day are required to register their water abstraction with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The official deadline for registration passed on 16 November 2018 and the EPA estimates that about 10 to 15% of abstractions of 25 or more cubic meters per day have been registered to date from the farming sector. The EPA has asked DAFM to issue a reminder to FAS advisors regarding the requirement for farmers to register for water abstraction of 25 cubic meters (25,000 litres) It is calculated that registration is required for the following farm categories of farms – and to assist the EPA, reminder letters will issue shortly to farmers identified as in the categories below:

In the event BEAM is oversubscribed, payment rates may be subject to minor revision.

Dairy Farms with over 200 cows

BEAM will open for applications in late August 2019 and applications will be accepted online through AgFood.ie.

Sheep Farm with over 5,000 animals

Poultry Producer with over 20,000 birds

This scheme has been designed to make the application process as userfriendly and accessible as possible for farmers. I am delighted to confirm that farmers will be in a position to apply within weeks, with a view to making payments to farmers as quickly as possible.

Piggery with over 500 animals

REVIEW OF THE NITRATES DEROGATION WELCOMED

The following are the steps to register an abstraction -

Recommendations of the Nitrates Expert Group following a review of the Nitrates Derogation were published jointly by the Departments of Agriculture and Environment. Derogation farms are a very important cohort of farmers for the Irish economy and this review has been conducted to ensure that those availing of the Derogation are operating to efficient and effective water quality protection standards at farm level. Both Ministers have welcomed the recommendations of the review group and will move to bring these into force this Autumn. The derogation allows more intensive farmers to operate at a higher stocking rate than that stipulated in the Nitrates Directive, subject to adherence to stricter rules to be implemented by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The derogation will run to the end of 2021 when the fourth programme concludes.

• Sign up to the EDEN website and request access to the Water Abstractions Module. Guidance on this process is available here.

Over 7,000 intensively stocked farmers with 11% of Irish agricultural area and 20% of bovine livestock availed of the derogation in 2018 with a similar number anticipated to avail of the facility in 2019. In addition, a further 5,000 farmers with 13% of bovine livestock exceeded the 170 kg N/ha livestock manure limit but exported slurry, or took other actions to comply with the limit. NITRATES ACTION PROGRAMME 2021 The Nitrates Review Group recognise the significant level of ambition forthcoming from the submissions of the review. Unfortunately, not all elements of the submissions could be advanced at this stage however there are several proposals that merit discussion in the context of the next Nitrates Action Programme which is due for consideration by the Commission at the end of 2021. The review group considers the following 10 West Kerry Live

Registration is still open. Registration details are provide below. You are kindly requested to bring this requirement to the attention of your farmer clients.

• Submit your abstraction details in the Water Abstractions Module via the EDEN website. Guidance on this process is available here. • When your registration is complete, you will receive a confirmation email from the EPA. Please contact the EPA on edenabstractionsupport@epa.ie with any queries. Background information to the Water Abstraction Regulations is available on the EPA website at the following link. MAJOR CHANGES ON THE WAY FOR SLURRY SPREADING EQUIPMENT The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has recommended that major changes should be made to the way in which slurry is spread on derogation farms, following a review of the nitrates derogation. The current nitrates derogation stipulates that at least 50% of slurry produced on such holdings “shall be applied by June 15”. It also states that “low-emission slurry spreading (LESS) equipment shall be used for any slurry applications after June 15”. According to the recommendations, released today, Wednesday, July 24, low-emission slurry spreading (LESS) equipment should be used for any slurry application after April 15, 2020. The recommendations go on to further specify that, from January 12, 2021, all slurry on such holdings must be spread using LESS equipment. It is also recommended that these conditions should apply to all farms

with a whole farm stocking rate in excess of 170kg (livestock manure) N/ha. The review was conducted to examine further opportunities for derogation farmers to improve efficiencies and continue to reduce their environmental footprint. “Given the challenges, I must acknowledge all the submissions received as part of this review and the level of ambition voiced to meet these challenges. This is an important cohort of farmers committed to high levels of efficiency who have an important role to play in protecting our environment,” he added. According to the department, the derogation allows more intensive farmers to operate at a higher stocking rate than that stipulated in the Nitrates Directive, subject to adherence to stricter rules to be implemented. According to department figures, over 7,000 intensively-stocked farmers – accounting for 11% of the Irish agricultural area and 20% of bovine livestock – availed of the derogation in 2018. A similar number of farmers are anticipated to avail of the facility in 2019.

For current applicants to KCFE, North Kerry College or Kerry ETB Training Centre to start education and training courses in September 2019 it is business as usual but with a new name. All enrolment and course related queries should be directed to the relevant campus – Monavalley Campus (066) 7149 600 – Clash Campus on (066) 7121 741 and Listowel Campus on (068) 21023 or via their existing websites or social channels.

Kerry College of Further Education and Training will offer over 180 further education and training programmes in three newly defined areas: courses for employment, courses for progression to further education or higher education courses and apprenticeship. These courses are aligned to Level 5 and Level 6 on the National Qualifications Framework. Kerry Education and Training Board CEO, Mr. Colm McEvoy stated, “the primary driver for a move to a single entity was to create a Further Education and Training brand for the County that is more easily identifiable and is recognised as an excellent education and training route for learners, students, parents, guardians, school guidance staff, employers and the wider public”. Prospective learners/students may follow their chosen Further Education and Training course at one of the four campus locations currently in Tralee or Listowel. Existing Kerry ETB centres in Tralee at Monavalley, Clash and Denny Street and Church Street, Listowel will be renamed as campus locations from September 1st 2019. A key aspect of this development is the opening of a new marketing, promotions and recruitment unit in Tralee. This office will manage the promotion and marketing of full-time Further Education and Training programmes to be delivered for Kerry College of Further Education and Training and from the autumn of 2019 onwards will also centrally process all applications and admissions. Faerie Folk and Matters of the Heart! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

The Hawthorn Tree has been a part of Irish folklore for centuries and remains a special place for the faeries that inhabit our countryside. If you dare to cut one of these trees down or harm it in anyway, it is thought that bad luck will follow. Irish folklore has many tales of woe from ancient times to more recent times of the unfortunate outcomes of messing with the “Faerie Tree”. Whether you are a believer or a sceptic, take note that the wee folk who are intent on protecting these very special trees just might have our best interests at heart. Hawthorn, historically used for kidney and bladder stones, as a diuretic, for digestive complaints and love sickness is now one of the most widely used heart tonic in Europe. The Hawthorn tree belonging to the Crataegus genus, is native of Europe, Northern America and Northern Asia. It’s botanical name, Crataegus comes from the Greek word Kratos, meaning strength – most likely relating to its hard wood although our ancestors would liken it to strengthening the heart. Hawthorn extracts are typically produced from the aerial parts of the plant – the leaves, flowers and berries with most clinical data supporting its cardiac benefits based upon studies of the dried flowering parts. Hawthorn’s leaves, berries, and flowers all contain substantial amounts of procyanidins and flavonoids, the substances that are most likely responsible for the plant’s medicinal properties. These are powerful antioxidants also found in blackberries, cherries, blueberries and red grapes. Well-established research into the medicinal properties of hawthorn and its effect on the heart is very promising and may provide a safe and effective treatment for cardiovascular problems. With cardiovascular disease (CVD) one of the leading causes of death in Ireland, it is no wonder that the Faeries are adamant on protecting the hawthorn tree. Young hawthorn leaves and blossoms are best harvested in early Summer for making teas, tinctures and tonics. They are noted for a musky smell when cut fresh which disappears once dried. In pre-Christian times, the smell was considered an aphrodisiac, encouraging lusty courting in the fields and ditches across Ireland. Once Christianity took hold, the smell was downgraded to that of a rotting corpse, and that put an end to that! Berries are harvested in in Autumn and Winter and are best used to make brandies, vinegars, syrups, jams and jellies. The long season between the first leaves, the flowers and finally the berries ensures that we have a hearty supply for most of the year.

angina, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and some arrhythmias. It is believed that phytochemicals in hawthorn may act directly on the heart muscle to increase the force of heartbeats and to relax the arteries around the heart. Hawthorn may also work indirectly by widening blood vessels resulting in lower blood pressure. In Germany, a standardised extract of hawthorn leaves and flowers has long been available on prescription for mild heart failure. Hawthorn extract is available in teas, tinctures, liquid extractions and capsules and is considered to be safe to use in doses ranging from 160mg - 900mg divided into 2 or 3 doses daily. While hawthorn is known for being excellent for the heart, it can interact with prescription medications taken for heart disease. Medications for other heart concerns, high blood pressure and male sexual dysfunction are also known to interact with hawthorn. It is important to note that heart failure and heart disease are serious conditions that require medical supervision and intervention. Before Western medicine became the norm, hawthorn was used in medicine for well over two thousand years right across the globe. In ancient Greece, hawthorn was used to treat heart problems and chest pain. In Chinese medicine, it was used to improve the circulatory system and aid in digestion. Europeans have long used hawthorn as a general tonic, a diuretic and astringent. In the United States, doctors have been using hawthorn for circulatory and respiratory conditions since the 18th century. Hawthorn continues to be widely studied and prescribed for its heart strengthening and protecting properties. As the demand for safer alternatives for treating disease grows, increased scientific research is being carried out on natural plant remedies. The standard of studies and recording of results is in itself a science, but without this kind of research the use of natural plant-based medicine would remain with the faeries, in folklore. Ventry men rescued from ‘the jaws of death’. From – Cork Examiner, 17 May, 1867. On Thursday morning last, a boat containing eight men left Ventry Harbour and proceeded to a solitary rock, about a mile to the west of the harbour’s mouth, on the north shore of Dingle Bay. The object of the crew was to collect mussels and other shellfish, to be used as manure. Six of the men landed and two remained in the boat. The six laboured hard with spades and shovels for several hours at their wretched toil until they had collected about a boatload of the shellfish in a heap. At this time the tide was at half flood. The boat with the other two men in it had been lying some distance off the rock, waiting for their companions. However, such a swell had risen with the flood tide that the frail boat would have inevitably been shattered to pieces had it attempted to go near the rock. The six men remained on the barren rock without shelter, food or light the whole night with a wild surf beating around them. The Rocket Mr. William Harraghty, chief boatman of the Ventry coastguard station was one of the first on the scene when the alarm had been given. He resolved to make every effort to rescue the men at the earliest hour of dawn if Providence protected them until that time. During the night the rocket apparatus belonging to the coastguard station was brought to the cliff-top – fully a thousand feet high [?] overlooking the rock. The first shot was fired by Mr. Harraghty at dawn and was aimed so successfully that the rocket line fell right over the rock so that it could be grasped by the men. Acting in obedience to signals from shore they hauled on the line till they had the whip and tailed block, with which a fastening could be made. This they made fast to the highest point of the rock. The fastening and the strength of the rope were first tested by thirty men hauling on it from the cliff-top. The Rescue Its security being established, a basket of provisions was passed down to the men who had spent a fearful night on the barren islet. The “breeches buoy” or bag, in which the men were to be brought ashore, was next passed along the line. The first man entered it and amid the delighted acclamations of all present – several hundreds in number – he was soon hauled safely up to the cliff-top. The operation was repeated until all were landed – until the six men stood amongst their fellow creatures, rescued from the very jaws of death. [It is understood that the men were stranded on Oileán na Portáin (Crab island) near Dunbeg.

According to Admiralty records –ADM 17520 – Chief Boatman William Harraghty was transferred to Ventry coastguard station from Courtmacsherry on 16 August 1861].

Jail for gang of thieves From – Kerry Evening Post, 4 January 1832. In the last week a fortunate discovery of a nest of felons (sheep stealers) was made by Constable John Burke, of the Castlegregory police. With the assistance of a few sub-constables he succeeded in apprehending six of this nefarious gang in the remote glens of the half barony of Literagh, viz. – John Bonane, Owen Carty, Timothy Sughrue, Michael Moynahan, John Conner Shea, and Darby Connir Shea.

a collision, attended by loss of life, occurred in Dingle Bay on Tuesday morning at an early hour. From what can be learned, it appears that a steam tug was towing an ice hulk to Ventry for one of the fishing companies there. When coming around Bray Head, where there is always a high sea running, a barque, name unknown, collided with the ice hulk and nearly upturned her. There were six men on the ice hulk and two of them fell into the sea and were drowned. Boats were immediately lowered from the steam tug,and a search made for the two men but no trace of them could be found. The ice hulk was brought to Ventry where it was found she was much damaged. The two men who lost their lives are natives of Kinsale. Their bodies have not been recovered.

While coming in and being to the northward of the Blasket Sound the boat struck upon a sunken rock. It was low water at the time, between seven and eight o’clock in the morning. The captain though he was a good distance off the rock when she struck. She did not go down at once and the crew were able to get into the small boat, and save part of their clothing. Shortly afterwards the Mary Francis sank in about fathoms of water. A great part of the men’s clothing, and all the materials of the boat were also lost. The Catherine and the Antoinette, both of Peel, stood by to render assistance. Much sympathy is felt for the captain and the crew who have lost the greater part of the season. The captain owned three-eights of the boat which was not insured.

A New Brand for Killorglin

pick their preferred logo design and tagline that will represent our town going forward.

Community invited to engage in the branding process

The public vote will be conducted on the Killorglin Chamber Alliance Facebook page until August 9th..

The Socio-Economic Plan for Killorglin which was launched late last year proposes a number of key development actions through which the town’s assets and resources can be aligned. The plan was shaped by the community and aims to strive to build a better community, where people want to live, visit, work and enjoy a good quality of life, now and into the future. Currently, the Killorglin Chamber Alliance is working collaboratively with local community groups, clubs, businesses and local government in order to implement these plans. One of our first steps has been to look at the creation and implementation of the Killorglin brand tools, which consists of a logo, tagline, brand identity and a new website called killorglin. ie.

Get involved!

To vote please log on here: facebook.com/ KillorglinChamberAlliance. 'Killorglin.ie will be used to help promote the town’s assets and effectively communicate the socio-economic plan updates, what’s on, supports available and so on. In time we’re hoping it will become a great community communication hub. We aim to launch the town’s branding and website later in 2019’, concluded Stephen. For updates please search for Killorglin Chamber Alliance on Facebook or Twitter.

Back in 2018 the Chamber Alliance was delighted to receive funding from Kerry County Council for this branding work. Since then we have set up a project team who have engaged with a design team in driving this project forward. Stephen O’Sullivan, Chairman of the Killorglin Chamber Alliance said ‘The Killorglin brand tools will really freshen up the town's image. A huge amount of hard work and long hours have been put in over the past number of months by Paul Carney who is leading the project along with other chamber committee members. They all have given their time for free. I would like to thank all of them for their continued support, dedication and passion in helping delivery this major project for the town.” One of our commitments was to have the local community and businesses have their say, so now that the design concepts have entered the final stages we like to reach out to the local community in order to help us

Clocháin or ‘Beehive’ Houses Isabel Bennett

that other dwellings in the area were partially or wholly constructed of organic materials (timber and mud) which leave no traces today. These buildings are to be found throughout the Dingle Peninsula, within some of our earthen ringforts, stone cashels and monastic sites. These dwellings are also found without an enclosing element, either singly, conjoined (‘figure-of-eight’) or three together. They were the houses in which people lived, be they of moderate or even high status, or monks within monasteries. In some cases, as was found during the excavations of the monastery at an Riasc, they may also have been used as workshops or had other uses. Sometimes underground passages known as souterrains are found associated with them. Some of these structures also date from more recent times, as they seem to have been a popular form of outbuilding at the end of the 19th and early in the 20th century, and are often found associated with farmhouses of this date. There are several examples to be seen in the village of Com Dhíneol (Coumeenoole), near Slea Head, as well as elsewhere on the peninsula. These ‘huts’ usually survive fairly intact, with their roofs still on them – although if you look closely you will probably find that they were built with the use of mortar. The earlier structures have all collapsed, although some have been rebuilt, within the foundations of the earlier buildings. It is also possible that some of the unenclosed structures, especially those which survive only to bare foundations, may date back as far as the Bronze Age or perhaps even earlier!

Is mó clochán aonair atá scaipthe ar fud na dúthaí seo. Cé go bhféadfadh cuid acu baint a bheith acu lenár n-aois féin, d’fhéadfadh cuid eile acu a bheith chomh críonna leis an gCré-umhaois, ach is ón Luathré Chríostaí, c. 500-1100 A.D. an chuid is mó desna clocháin. Clocháin aonair cuid acu so. Uaireanta bíonn dhá cheann ceangailte lena chéile, ar nós na huimhreach 8, agus uaireanta bíonn trí cinn acu i dteannta a chéile. Áitreabh na ngnáthdhaoine ab ea iad, tionóntaithe na bhfeirmeoirí móra b’fhéidir. Thógtaí cinn eile laistigh de na clathacha insna ráthanna, clocháin chloiche de ghnáth, cé go mbaintí úsáid as ábhar eile iontu chomh maith. Is dócha go raibh tithe eile ann a tógadh as adhmad nó fóid, ná fuil aon rian díobh fágtha inniu. Bhíodh na clocháin in úsáid mar bhotháin ag feirmeoirí anuas trésna blianta. In áiteanna eile bíonn pluais nó pasáiste fé thalamh le fáil fésna clocháin.

Perhaps the most ubiquitous monument type on the Dingle Peninsula is what is generally referred to as the ‘beehive hut’. Of course, these structures have nothing to do with bees or their hives (which can be very confusing for our visiting tourists!), but were generally in use as houses (particularly those dating from the Early Medieval period), or, in more recent times, as farm sheds. They were dubbed ‘beehive huts’ at some stage in the recent past due to their similarity in shape to beehives as used in the recent past (but no longer today, in this part of the world). These clocháin (the Irish word for these structures) are simple round houses built using local stone (cloch is an Irish word for ‘stone’), and dating probably from around the 5th/6th – 12th centuries AD. They were roofed either in stone, using the corbelling technique, where one stone slightly overlaps another as the building increases in height (if of small diameter) or were thatched (with heather perhaps?) It is also probable

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Táimid ag súil go mór le Féile Lios Póil ag an deireadh seachtaine, mar atá cuireadh faighte againn léiriú agus míniú a dhéanamh ar na tionscadail fuinnimh atá ar siúl ar an leithinis. Is iontach an deis é seo chun nuacht a roinnt faoi dul chun cinn Mháistirphlean Fuinneamh Chorca Dhuibhne, Tionscadal Chorca Dhuibhne de chuid Líonraí BSL, an Oiliúint do Thraenálaithe Fuinnimh atá le déanamh go luath, agus an staidéar féidearthachta do dhíleátóir anaeróbach. Léiríonn na torthaí tosaigh ón Máistirphlean Fuinnimh gurb ionann riachtanais fuinnimh reatha na leithinse agus 315GWh de chumhacht. D'fhéadfaí é seo a laghdú go dtí 205GWh faoin mbliain 2030, gníomh a shábhálfadh beagnach €10M sa bhliain ag na rátaí reatha fuinnimh agus a bheadh toradh suntasach aige ar an eacnamaíocht áitiúil. Beidh ionadaithe de chuid Mhol Dhaingean Uí Chúis agus Líonraí BSL i láthair ag an bhFéile tráthnóna Aoine agus Domhnaigh chun na torthaí seo – agus a thuilleadh – a phlé, agus beidh siad ag súil le bhur dtuairimí a chloisint. Beidh foireann ó Choiste Timpeallachta Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne i láthair chomh maith ar an Domhnach chun cabhrú le daoine óga tuiscint a fháil ar an teicneolaíochtaí a bhaineann le fuinneamh inathnuaite. We’re looking forward to Féile Lios Póil at the weekend where we’ve kindly been invited to showcase the energy projects underway on the Peninsula. It’s a great opportunity to share progress on the Energy Master Plan for the Peninsula, ESB Networks Dingle Project, the planned Energy Coach Training and the feasibility study for anaerobic digestion. Initial figures from the Energy

Master Plan are telling us that the current energy need for the Peninsula is 315GWh. It is possible to reduce this to 205GWh by 2030 and save almost €10M per year at current energy costs which would have a significant impact on the local economy. Dingle Hub and ESB Networks representatives be on hand at the Féile on Friday evening and Sunday afternoon to discuss these findings and more and look forward to hearing your views. The Coiste Timpeallacht team from Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne will also be present on Sunday to help our younger audience explore renewable energy technologies.

O Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Chuir an mhór theas tochas ar scata. Is dóichí ná feicfear aon ghreadadh ach d’fhéadfadh tuilte gabháil chugainn. Tá muintir bhun na gcnoc sásta leo féin mar ná geobhaidh aon taoide mhór chúcha ach má bhíonn an tuile thar meon d’fhéadfadh go mbeadh stráicí do chnoic ag sleamhnú chugainn agus gan fóirithint i ndán do ainiseóirí. Sin í an tarraingreacht ghruama, ach cloisir go raibh mór theas agus fuacht againn sna glúnta tharainn. Bhí bliain amháin san 17ú aois déag, is dóigh liom agus lean fuacht failce ar feag breis agus bliain. Fuair stoc, caoire agus éanlaithe bás. Arán agus Cáis - Bread and Cheese Peter Clarke

(‘Little Hillside’ and ‘Big Hillside’). I follow the worn path framed by high walls and fuchsia hedges thick with wild flowers and imagine the echoes of pilgrim footsteps. I am happy out, moving through the landscape but connected to it, alert for the next footfall, my breaths and the tip-tap of my poles marking time. Boreens like this are pathways embedded in the ancient language of the landscape; are there ghosts here? The peaceful boreen is cut suddenly by a busy road. I cross and step back into the silence of the past. A wicket gate into a wet field of sheep and buttercups brings me to Teampall na Cluanach. By a ruined oratory, the inward curve of its walls cut low but still holding a darkness, two cross slabs stand looking across to Ard na Caithne (Height of the Stawberry Tree) sweeping down to Smerwick Harbour. Yellow Flags cluster round, bright against the low stone grave markers of a cilleen - old souls in bloom. The path loses its sense of direction to skirt around modern field boundaries and then, over a ladder stile, brings me to Gallarus Oratory. Séipéilín Ghallarais is in tact: corbelled stone curving to a ridge like the keel of St Brendan’s naomhóg. Ghallarais: "Shelter for foreigners"; yesterday’s pilgrims — today’s tourists. The site has been manicured by the OPW but the oratory retains its cold presence within; Seamus Heaney describes it perfectly: “A core of old dark walled up with stone” Today the dark is being drained by selfie-takers so I don’t linger.

Lughnasa, the celebration of the new harvest. Fionn MacCumhaill, the fair haired warrior, sets out from what is now Ventry to battle Lugh in the guise of Crom Dubh - the dark crooked one. Crooked because he carries the first sheaf of grain on his back out of the darkness of the earth on Ireland’s second highest mountain. St Brendan later gives his own name to the mountain before setting off on his epic voyage in a leather and wattle naomhóg to discover paradise. I am walking Cosán na Naomh (The Saint’s Way), a pilgrim route following Fionn and the Saint through Corca Dhuibhne from Ventry to Mount Brandon. The route traces a line over layers of history embedded in placenames and the landscape itself. Lughnasa mountain pilgrimages survive: the popular climb up Croagh Patrick and Mount Brandon are made on ‘Domhnach Crom Dubh’ (Crom Dubh Sunday) at the end of July. On a soft Irish morning in May, a couple of kilometres west of Ventry, I squeeze my backpack through the narrow doorway of Páidí Ó Sé’s grocery for lunch supplies. As I pay for the only packet of cheese in the tiny shop I ask the woman behind the counter about the weather; “I don’t know – it was fine last week” she shrugs. A lane between the church, the pub and a statue of football hero Páidí Ó Sé himself leads me through soft dunes onto the vast sweep of Cuan Fionntrá (White Strand Bay). The tide is low, the firm sand glistens. Rivulets run down towards the sea, branching into delicate fern-like deltas by the tide-line. Brightness spreading from the horizon slices the blue-grey of the sea from the grey-blue of the sky. This is the first hike I have done in several months and although I am nursing a sore knee, the whole beach is mine and it’s good to be out. I make a quick stop in Ventry for a second breakfast. It's the Gaeltacht; conversation in the Post Office is in Irish and all the place names along this route are too. I am discovered with my cuppa tae by Herself and two friends and we go up the gently rising road to Cill na gColmán (Kilcolman), an early ecclesiastical enclosure in a sloping field wet with dew. On a large boulder are two inscribed crosses and, in weathered Ogham, ‘Colman the Pilgrim’. Leaving my companions I head off down the road just missing a herd of steaming horses led from the hill by a farmer in a Jeep. Rounding a bend, Rahinane tower house stands inside an older ring fort, one of its four walls blown away and gaping. The open road climbs, then narrows, the hedgerows enclose the view and, through a farmyard full of penned cattle I enter the quietness of a stony boreen hugging the contours of Leataoibh Beag and Leataoibh Mór 30 West Kerry Live

By midday I have covered nearly 15 kilometres. I’m hungry and need a rest. I pass Cathair Deargáin, a cashel encircling the hollow stumps of beehive huts and then the fallen walls of Fothrach an tSainsiléara (The Chancellors’s House) to find a place to eat at Cill Maolchéadair (Kilmalkedar). Except for the crows in an oak tree, It’s blissfully peaceful as I sit in the sun by a weathered tomb to eat my Ventry bread and Páidí Ó Sé cheese, wondering how many pilgrims have taken arán agus cáis on their journey here. The simple meal seems apt for this harvest journey: even though I’m early for Lughnasa, this is St Brendan’s feast day. My solitude is broken as tourists arrive with a guide. They stand, gaze, wander, take photos and head back to the bus just as a second one arrives. I finish my food, hoist my backpack and leave. The crows pick up the crumbs. Another stony boreen climbs behind Kilmalkedar onto rough open hillside rising to Cnoc Rinn Chonaill. The path meanders between low gorse and heather, a maze of sheep tracks confounding the route. Several ladder stiles cross field walls as I make slow progress over false summits to reach the coll. My knee complains but the views are worth it. Past more fallen clocháns and cross slabs at the foot of the hill, a road curves around the foothills of Mount Brandon before turning up a small lane towards the car park marking the end of the modern Cosán na Naomh. Here the Marian grotto by a concrete bridge at An Baile Breac (‘Speckled Townland’) has little presence, eclipsed by the bulk of Mount Brandon looming above, head in the clouds, hidden, impassive and uncaring. Miracles have been attributed to climbing this sacred mountain and a stone plaque records recent cures but I won’t get one today; rest will be the best medicine for my knee and I don’t fancy meeting The Dark Crooked One – if, perhaps, Crom Dubh is still up there under the crags. News from Dingle Golf Links Ceann Sibéal Sean Desmond is South of Ireland Champion Ceann Sibéal members were delighted to hear on Sunday evening that Sean Desmond had won his final in the South of Ireland Championship with a victory over Keith Egan by one hole. This was an excellent achievement in that it was only Sean’s third appearance in the event and in competing against a number of older players - Sean is 21. He joins a list of some very well known golfing heroes including Graeme Mc Dowell, Darren Clarke and Paul Mc Ginley. Sean visited Ceann Sibéal on Monday with the trophy and graciously gave credit to his early days when he started to play golf in Ceann Sibéal when Steve Fahy would let the brothers out ‘when it was quiet’. Clearly his game has developed very well both in his home club in Monkstown and in Ceann Sibéal. Chomhgháirdeacas Sean! Duaiseanna na gCaptaein Both the Ladies and Mens Captain’s Prize days took place recently; on 20th and 28th July respectively. Both days enjoyed large timesheets in excellent weather with scoring reflecting the conditions. Winner of Duais Captaen na mBan was Elmarie Long with 43 Stableford Points while Patrick Farrell won Duais Captaen na bhFear with 42 Points.

Sean Desmond with his South of Ireland trophy meets with Captaen na mBan, Margaret Power and Uachtaráin na bhFear, Donal Ó’Loingsigh in Ceann Sibéal.

The Kerry minors now play Galway on Saturday, August 10, or Sunday, August 11, in the All-Ireland semi-final. Contact our coaching officer Gavin O'Connor or send a DM on social media to reserve space. SENIORS: County League Division 5B Group 2: Cromane 3-8, Killarney Legion 2-14 A stunning finish from the Killarney Legion B team, scoring scored 2-7 in the last 15 minutes, sealed a dramatic late win in Cromane on Sunday afternoon. The Killarney men - who were powered on by Shaun Keane, veteran Mike O'Sullivan, Kevin Breen, and Tom Moriarty - seemed dead and buried when Cromane's Mikey Houlihan converted a 47th-minute penalty to propel his side into a 3-6 to 0-7 lead. However, this didn't take into account Legion's fighting spirit and they proceeded to dominate play with two late Moriarty points followed by another from Breen sealed their victory. Cromane had made all the play in the first half and led by 2-6 to 0-2 at the break, the goals coming from Niall Dennehy and Brice Dourieu. They looked set for the two points but that late Legion burst kickstarted by a MIke O'Sullivan goal in the 48th minute turned the game on its head. Best for Cromane were Conor Sugrue, Niall Dennehy, goalkeeper Paudie McCarthy, and Shane O'Neill. Best for Legion were Shaun Keane, Mike O'Sullivan, Kevin Breen, and Tom Moriarty. Team: Paudie McCarthy; Liam Teahan, Cathal Crosby, Shane Ahern; Finbar Casey, Conor Sugrue, Ethan Griffin; Donnchadh Walsh, Mikey Houlihan; Danny O'Shea, Niall Dennehy, Shane O'Neill; Emmet Casey, Sean O'Sullivan, Brice

Dourieu. Subs: Cian O'Keeffe for E Casey 45m. MINORS: Central Region Minor League Division 2 (round 2): GGC 3-20, Kerins O'Rahillys 3-6. An excellent win for the Glenbeigh-Glencar/ Cromane (GGC) minors in the Central Region Division clash in Tralee last Thursday (July 26). This was their second win in a row in the division coming along after their opening win against Castlegregory. The first half was a tight affair with GGC leading by just two at the break, 2-6 to 2-4, having played with the aid of a stiff breeze. However, they were transformed in the second half, kicking 1-14 to their opponent’s 1-2 to win comfortably. Highlights included some outstanding goalkeeping from Jack McGillicuddy, 0-12 kicked by full-forward Darragh McKeefry and 1-2 from midfielder Kaiya Flaherty in his first full game of the year. Well done to all the lads. Their remaining game is on Thursday, August 1, against Milltown-Castlemaine in Milltown at 7pm. The Division 2 semi-finals are down for Thursday, August 8, with the final on Thursday, August 22. Best of luck to the GGC minors in the remainder of this competition. Scorers: Darragh McKeefry 0-12 (0-6 frees), Jason Clifford 2-0, Kiaya Flaherty 1-2, Rian O'Donovan 0-3, Liam Smith 0-2, Liam Roche 0-1. Team: Jack McGillicuddy; Liam Joy, Jack O'Sullivan, Cian Knight; Sean Tadhg Sheahan, Diarmuid McGillicuddy, Eanna Healy; Liam Smith, Kiaya Flaherty; Sean Quirke, Liam Roche, Aaron Broderick; Jason Clifford, Darragh McKeefry, Rian O'Donovan. UNDER-14s: Central Region Division 2 semi-final: GGC 5-16, Castlegregory 3-9 The GGC under-14s had qualified for the Central Region Division 2 final with a superb win in Glenbeigh last Monday evening (July 22). Their opponents, Castlegregory, got off to a much brighter start and led by 2-0 to 0-1 after just five minutes. GGC settled and finished the half well and led at the break by 2-10 to 2-2. A couple of quick goals at the start of the second half took the wind out of a young Castlegregory team’s sails but they kept battling to the end. It was good to see all of the GGC panel get gametime this evening especially as they all gear up for the Central Region Division 2 final.

Keel GAA Notes SENIORS: Keel hosted Milltown/Castlemaine in round 10 of the County League on Saturday evening. Keel opened the scoring with a point from Martin Burke. With 3 minutes gone Gavin Horan opened up the Keel defence and slotted the ball neatly in the back of the Keel net. It was evident from the very beginning that it was going to be a close encounter and both teams fought hard to get scores on the scoreboard. Dylan O'Neill was excellent from the placed ball and he put over two points. The home side replied with a point from Luke Flynn after an excellent run from defence and Gary Sayers kicked two frees between the posts. With 17 minutes gone the score was Keel 0-04, Milltown/Castlemaine 1-2. The visitors gained most of the possession for the next few minutes of play and put the Keel defence under pressure with some sticking runs from Gavin Horan and Jonathan O'Sullivan which resulted in frees which Cathal Moriarty and Dylan O'Neill slotted safely over the bar. Keel gained some key possession and they got 3 points on the board from Gary Sayers and Tommy Buckley. Dylan O'Neill kicked another free just before half time to leave the half time score Keel 0-07, M/C 1-05. M/C opened the scoring in the second half with a point from Gavin Horan. However, Keel quickly replied with another point from Luke Flynn as well as a free from Tommy Buckley. Luke Flynn slotted another between the posts after some excellent work from Martin Burke, Gary Murphy and Thomas Ladden. With 9 minutes gone Keel had gained some momentum and the score was 0-10 to 1-06 to the home side. M/C replied to Keels momentum with points from Jonathan O'Sullivan and Pa Wrenn. Again, Keel replied with 3 points from Gary Sayers(2F) and a point from play from Martin Burke. With 20 minutes gone it was Keel 0-13, M/C 1-08. Jonathan O'Sullivan kicked two points for his side to level the game. Influential Pa Wrenn kicked another point to put his side in the lead with minutes remaining. However, the home side never backed down and earned a free in the final minutes with Tommy slotting the free over the bar. A very competitive and entertaining battle between both sides left the full-time score Keel 0-14, M/C 1-11.

That evening, John Spillane took to the stage in O’Connor’s Marquee with local trio “High Tide” to perform many classics leaving people wanting more! It was enjoyed by all who attended. Bhí Dé Sathairn ina dhiaidh sin! D'éirigh thar barr leis an Aifreann ar maidin agus chuir an aimsir

go mór leis an slua! Bhí an sagart Mulvihill antaitneamhach. Tá an-áthas orainn é a bheith mar shagart paróiste nua againn! I gComórtas Chaisleán an Ghainimh bhí go leor teaghlach agus leanaí ag tógáil rudaí iontacha le samhail dár n-Ionad Pobail féin “Halla le Chéile” mar bhuaiteoir! An tráthnóna sin, chonaic Club Galf, Caisleán Ghriaire slua mór don Cluiche Galf 3 Liathróid. D'fhág an aimsir agus na duaiseanna iontacha a bhí urraithe ag Drioglann an Daingin gach duine go maith! An tráthnóna sin, thug John Spillane aghaidh ar an stáitse i Tabhairne Uí Chonchubhair leis an triúr áitiúil “High Tide” chun go leor damhsa clasaiceach a dhéanamh ag fágáil daoine sásta! Bhain gach duine a bhí i láthair taitneamh as.

Brandon Pier that evening from our annual Tug of War; Cloghane against Brandon (with Cloghane winning this year!), to the newly popular “PopUp Gaeltacht” and annual Prize Draw sparking people’s attention! A great day was had by all! Dé Luain bhí lá Bréanainn ag dul chun solais! Agus an ghrian ag scoilteadh na gcloch, ba lá iontach é! D'éirigh thar barr le tóraíocht taisce na bpáistí chomh maith le gúna mhaisiúil na bpáistí! Bhí an t-am iontach ag na rannpháirtithe gleasta suas don lá agus fuair siad fiú roinnt boinn a thabhairt abhaile! D'éirigh thar barr lenár Rás Lachan agus Triathlon bliantúil le deis € 100 a bhuachan i rás na lacha agus an t-iomaitheoir is fearr a chríochnaigh an triathlon! Bhí spiorad agus atmaisféar iontach i gCé Bréanainn an tráthnóna sin lenár tarrac téide bliantúil; An Clochán in aghaidh Bréanainn (agus an Clochán ag baint amach i mbliana!), Leis an nGaeltacht “Pop-up” a raibh an-tóir uirthi agus an Tarrac Duaiseanna bhliantúil a spreagann spiorad daoine! Bhí lá iontach ag gach duine!

Now Sunday! Well Sunday started off brilliantly with the ascent up Mount Brandon being very popular! 55 people attended and Dingle Walking Group led them. Massive thank you to them and Micheál Dowd who provided food vouchers for tea and refreshments after. Thanks to Eoin Lynch who organised the walking group also. The Family Fun Day was an enormous success with Bouncy Castle and games being well used and appreciated! The magician was entertaining and the turn out for the Teddy Bear Competition and the Pet Show was second to none.

To finish, I would like to thank everyone who showed up, took part, watched, volunteered and sponsored our festival this year! We could not have done it without you and the help of Kerry County Council, Glór na Gael and Údarás na Gaeltachta. As well as that, many thanks to our Festival Queen Lin Moriarty for taking part in the events and being a regal queen, you did yourself proud Lin! We hope to see you all again next year, thank you all very much! Until 2020!

Anois Dé Domhnaigh! Bhuel thosaigh an Domhnach go hiontach agus bhí an-tóir air! Dhreap 55 duine suas Cnoc Bréanainn agus bhí Grúpa Siúil an Daingin i gceannas orthu. Gabhaim buíochas mór leo agus le Micheál Ó’Dubhda a chuir bia ar fáil le haghaidh tae agus sólaistí ina dhiaidh. D'éirigh thar barr leis an Lá Spraoi Teaghlaigh agus baineadh úsáid mhaith as Caisleán Súgartha agus as cluichí! Bhí an draíodóir siamsúil agus bhí slua mór ann don Chomórtas Teddy Bear agus don Pet Show.

Le críochnú, ba mhaith liom buíochas a ghabháil le gach duine a thaispeáin, a ghlac páirt, a d'fhéach ar ár bhféile agus a thug urraíocht dúinn i mbliana! Ní fhéadfaimis é a dhéanamh gan an cabhair ó sibhse agus cabhair ó Chomhairle Contae Chiarraí, Glór na nGael agus Údarás na Gaeltachta. Chomh maith leis sin, go raibh maith agat Lin as bheith mar banríon! Ba chóir duit a bheith bródúil as tú féin. Tá súil againn go mbeidh sibh ar fad ar ais an bhliain seo chugainn chun an bhféile a cheiliúradh, Míle míle buíochas! Go dtí 2020!

The Fancy Dress Parade on Sunday evening had a sensational turn out! The Village of Cloghane was full to the brim with people eager to see what our local characters would come up with! With walking floats, trailer floats and all Irish floats, there was an amazing variety of entertainers. From topical jokes to just good old fashioned silliness, it’s a parade to be remembered! Best dressed man and woman went to local bar owner Pádraig Murphy and Bríde Greaney! Congratulations! D'éirigh go hiontach leis an bParáid Gúna Mhaisiúil tráthnóna Dé Domhnaigh! Bhí Sráidbhaile an Chlocháin lán le daoine a raibh fonn orthu a fháil amach cad é a dhéanfadh ár gcarachtair áitiúla! Le flóta siúil, flóta leantóra agus flóta Éireannach, bhí éagsúlacht iontach siamsóirí ann. Ó scéalta grinn i mbéal an phobail go dtí amaidí sean-aimseartha, is paráid chn cuimhnigh ar! Joint Ladies Mary & Peg Kissane, Patsy & Joan Kissane Joint Mixed:Mary B O'Sullivan & Mike Kissane

An early score from Jonathan O'Sullivan who would go on to add another two huge scores from the stand side during the second half extended our lead out to two at 1-6 to 0-7 however two quick scores from both Gary Sayers & a marauding half back in Luke Flynn (Who scored both off his right and left & contributed 0-3) thereafter seen Keel take the lead at 0-10 to 1-6 following a big point from Martin Burke.

Donal O Sullivan & Mary O Sullivan Gents Mike Slattery & Jim Glancy Raffle Winners: 1st Eileen Moriarty, 2nd Margaret Gill and 3rd Laura O Connor. Kerry Senior Ladies : Congratulations to the Kerry Senior ladies on their win over Westmeath in Killarney on Sunday last. It was a very important game for them and the win secures senior championship status for them next year. Well done to Ciara Murphy, from the Milltown Listry Ladies Club, who put in a fine performance in the number 7 jersey, making some vital interceptions and certainly solidifying the Kerry defence. The ladies club was also represented by Ella Teahan on the panel. Maith thu Ciara agus Ella. Next up is an encounter with All Ireland champions Dublin in the quarter final. Best of luck to the Kerry gals!

Well done to Cillian Burke and Anthony Kelliher part of the Kerry South U16 side that beat Galway on Saturday last, in their semi final before, finally claiming victory over Cavan in the Fitzgerald Family U16 Inter County Div 1 Cup. Final score :Kerry South 2-14 Cavan 1-7.

Full-time score' Kerry 1-12: Westmeath 1-10

Comhghairdeas freisin to Ben Downes who played with the Kerry U14 side that defeated Mayo on Saturday afternoon. Their coach is none other than club man David Heasman, who also does fantastic work with our underage teams here in Milltown Castlemaine.

Credit Union County Senior Football League Division 3, Round 10

Well done to Conor Spillane who also played with the Kerry South U15 team on Saturday, assisting them in winning their All Ireland Semi Final against Galway in Limerick.

Milltown/Castlemaine made the short journey to Keel on Saturday evening, July 27th for a Mid Kerry Derby in Round 10 of the County Senior Football League.

Congratulations to you all for doing our club proud with great performances all round.

Keel came into the contest on the back of three defeats in the league so were looking to halt that run following a good county championship run earlier in the season & with eyes moving towards the Mid Kerry Championship undoubtedly.

Winners in fundraising Lotto Jackpot Draw: Huge congratulations to our most recent winners in our Lotto Jackpot Draw on Friday last. Drawn numbers were 1,14,22 and 18 was the bonus number. €50 each to John Joe and Catherine Harmon, Milltown and Michael Kissane, Beaufort. €25 each to Paud Tagney, Owen Flynn, Seamus Kerrisk and Linda McCarthy.

point from play off his left, had the locals in a small bit of trouble & amazement at the ability levels of O'Neil from placed ball but scores from Sayers, Martin Burke & Tommy Buckley off frees & from play combined with the first of Luke Flynn's three points from play had little in it heading towards the short whistle with the scores favouring the visitors marginally at 1-5 to 0-7.

Milltown Seniors :sponsored by Larkins Bar and Restaurant and Kelly's Londis Topshop. Local Neighbours Leave It All On The Line In Local Derby

The encounter ebbed and flowed from here on in and Keel looked to have had the upperhand when a Gary Sayers close range free put the home side two to the good at 0-13 to 1-8 entering the final quarter. Milltown/Castlemaine who were looking for either a fourth win on the trot or a four game unbeaten record showed huge character as the away team and scores from Pa Wren & Jonathan O'Sullivan brought the sides together again at 1-10 to 0-13. Pa Wren with another fantastic score from long range looked to have sealed another valuable win for Milltown/Castlemaine but Tommy Buckley who was a handful all night & is a brilliant young footballer made sure the points would be divided after converting a late free under immense pressure.

Keel 0-14 Milltown/Castlemaine 1-11 Referee: Michael Joy (Ballydonoghue) Compiled by Dara O'Connor

Milltown/Castlemaine came in on the back of three wins on the trot following victories over St. Pats Blennerville, Fossa & Firies so were hoping to keep the momentum going.

€9,400 is the new Jackpot total on offer on Friday August 8th in Langford's Bar. It would be a great start to Puck Fair!. We will also have a Match 3 Jackpot of €250 and our 6 consolation prizes.

Gary Sayers through an early free had the hosts ahead but Gavin Horan soon after ran through the spine of the Keel defence and nestled a ball superbly in the bottom corner of Stephen Cahilane's net to make it 1-0 to 0-1.

Get your lucky ticket - available from local sellers and businesses. As always sincere thanks to all who support our Lotto.

Points from the classy Dylan O'Neil who scored 0-4 brilliant points off the ground during the opening half & a well taken Cathal Moriarty

Pea and Spring Onion Risotto Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Sometimes the word risotto really strikes fear in people, maybe it sounds too fancy or maybe too complicated or maybe you think of the really stodgy versions that end up being served. If you learn to make a good risotto you will find that you will use it time and time again. It is such an easy dish to make and the best thing is that it can be adapted to any season and most vegetables.

Beehive Theatre, Cúilín, Dingle 23rd July to 11th August Tues, Thurs, Sat & Sun 7.30pm Sat Matinee 2pm Recommended 12 €15

When I make a risotto, I like to keep it very light by making a puree from the main vegetable in the risotto, this stops you from adding loads of cream at the end and also it takes on the colour of the vegetable. When serving some try to keep the portions small and it should be a bit loose and not just a spoonful of rice stacked high a plate. Think of the consistency of a very thick soup. This recipe will be perfect for a nice summer’s evening. Ingredients 150 ml milk 250g peas Tickets at Leac a' Ré, Strand Street, Dingle

1 onion, finely diced 250g risotto rice

"What a fantastic show! I laughed my head off. Beautiful poignant music and song;great performers ;very touching and very funny. Catch it while you can!"

700 ml warm stock (vegetable or light chicken stock) bunch of spring onions, chopped

- Zoë Uí Fhaoláin

salt and pepper 100g hard cheese (optional) 1 tsp. crème fraiche Method for the purée Bring the milk to a simmer, adding half of the peas and a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook this for about 3 minutes. Add a little butter and then put this in a blender. Bring this top a smooth purée. Taste and adjust the seasoning. for the risotto Put a pot over a medium heat, add some oil then add in the onion, a small amount of butter and salt. Allow this to cook at this heat for about five minutes until the onion is soft and translucent. You can now add in the rice and allow it to toast in the pot for about five minutes and then add in a ladle of warm stock. Keep cooking it at a medium temperature allowing the stock to soak into the rice. Continue to do this, adding more stock and stirring until the rice is cooked. to finish the dish Add some purée into the rice along with the rest of the peas and most of the spring onions (keep a few for garnishing at the end). Taste and season the rice. The risotto should be served when the rice is of loose consistency, add a little more purée if it is too stiff. Add some grated hard cheese if using and a spoon of crème fraiche.

Movie Review THE LION KING Tom Ó Neachtain The Lion King is a 2019 live-action remake of the critically acclaimed 1994 Disney classic of the same name. The director, John Favreau, has established himself a master of photorealistic animation with Disney’s remake of The Jungle Book but here he takes advantage of the bigger budget to create amazing visual set pieces using groundbreaking CGI. It is impossible to review this movie without comparing it to the original, and by comparison the movie’s most significant mis-step is in it's treatment of the villain Scar. Chiwetel Ejiofor gives a bland performance compared to Jeremy Irons’ iconic portrayal of Disney’s best villain. In its pursuit of realism, Scar along with all of the lion characters, appear almost expressionless. Even the voice cast for the lions are pretty lifeless, taking into consideration that James Earl Jones, reprising his role as the original Mufasa sounds bored and uninterested. This is in contrast with the rest of the voice cast who sound like they’re having a great time. Then there’s the soundtrack, Hanz Zimmer brings a gorgeous score to match the gorgeous visuals. The songs themselves are good covers of the originals, with the exception of Be Prepared. This seems like a B-Grade knock-off of the iconically villainous classic with its goose stepping hyenas. However, the new Lion King does improve on the original in certain ways; I feel like it is a lot funnier and its treatment of characters like Zazu the red-billed hornbill and Timon and Pumba the funniest characters in the movie, are given more screen time and more to do. While improving certain characters and using the beautiful visuals to match the beautiful score, the new Lion King doesn’t bring enough new ideas to the table to justify its own existence.

Tom Ă“ Neachtain is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne
