YOUR MONEY MATTERS FINANCIAL ADVICE COLUMN Q&A

The Cost of Going to College Cost Saving Energy Tips at home

Q: I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about saving energy in the home and I’d be interested in some tips on how I can do this and save money at the same time. What would you advise?

A: You can reduce your energy consumption and save money on your energy bills at the same time. Firstly, you should shop around. Switching your gas and electricity providers only takes a matter of minutes and the average consumer can save around €300 by switching from standard tariffs to the cheapest on the market. For accredited price comparison websites go to www.bonkers.ie or www.switcher.ie. Secondly, you should try to reduce your usage. Remember to switch off all appliances when not in use, whether it’s the microwave or the TV, and make sure to switch them off fully and not just leave them on standby. This could save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use, or between €50 and €100 a year on an average household electricity bill.

Comhar Chreidmheasa Chorca Dhuibhne Heating & Insulation: This takes up a huge proportion of our energy bills so conserving heat will save you money. Aim for 20°C in your living areas and 15Ǧ18°C in hallways and bedrooms. You can reduce your heating bill by 10% by turning down the heat by one degree. By insulating your attic you can cut your energy bill by 20%. Install a lagging jacket and you can save up to €2.50 per week in heating water costs. Have your boiler serviced once a year to ensure it is operating efficiently.

Doors & Windows: Seal off your windows and doors to prevent heat loss due to draughts. Close Q: My son is hoping to start college this autumn doors to rooms that are not used often and keep your curtains closed at night, even in empty rooms. Whatever path in life your son or daughter chooses, if it involves further education you will need to be realistic about what it is going to cost you. Going to college isn’t cheap, costing between €10,000 and €12,000, or more, each year for a student living away from home. As a typical third level course runs for 3 or 4 years, the cost of going to college is extremely expensive and is one of the biggest bills parents will ever face, particularly when you have more than one child. According to an article in The Irish Times earlier in January 2020, it costs up to €12,000 per year if the student lives away from home and around €7,000 per year if they can live at home. The single biggest cost for parents is accommodation, with an average cost of around €4,000, but this figure is much higher in Dublin. If you are not eligible for a student grant you will also have the mandatory student contribution fee which is capped at €3,000 per year. Added on to this are costs of books, transport, food and drink etc. Depending on your own financial circumstances, your son may be eligible for a student grant. Ireland’s single national awarding authority for all higher and further education grants. They have an Eligibility Reckoner on their website (www.susi.ie) so you can check out yourself if your son is entitled to a grant, before filling in any application forms. They have a sliding scale where students may be entitled to a full or a part grant, depending on the household income and on various other conditions, such as the number of dependent children in the household. This year, 43% of registered students are in receipt of a SUSI grant. It is important to be aware that coming towards the end of August you will find that a lot of the expenses are expected to be paid, such as the student contribution fee (which can be paid in two halves) and probably the deposit and rent up until Christmas. This can mean that parents face bills of around €4,000 before the end of the summer. If your son is not entitled to a grant, and if you feel that your own financial circumstances may make it difficult for you to cover these costs, you may opt to apply for an Education Loan. Even if your son is entitled to a grant, you may need to apply for a bridging loan until the grant is paid. Terms and conditions do apply to these loans but it is worth your while checking them out. According to a recent article in The Irish Times, 50% of families rely on loans or other borrowings

to cover the cost of college. This percentage may increase this year as many students will find they cannot get a summer job, or that the number of weeks that they can work is greatly reduced, and their parents may also have had to face financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic. You may find that third level institutions will need to change their format for the coming year and adapt to the restrictions imposed on them as a result of the current crisis, but third level courses will go ahead in some form or other and you need to be fully aware of the costs involved. It is important to get your son actively involved in the financial planning for the year ahead. Most colleges have a section on the cost of living on their websites and also a guide for students on how to budget. The Higher Education Authority (www.hea.ie/funding) also has a section on student finances with links to the SUSI website and also information on various bursaries and scholarships available. Starting college is an exciting time in a student’s life and an important chapter in their lives. We would like to wish all the best to the Class of 2020 whatever they choose to do in the future. best practice to cull straight away. Also, it is best to avoid trimming hooves. Toe granuloma is caused by hoof trimming and it is more than likely that the farmer will have to cull any sheep with this problem as it is difficult to cure.

Louis Murchan MACGILLYCUDDY REEKS AGRI-ENVIRONMENT PROJECT EXPANDS. The MacGillycuddy Reeks European Innovative Partnership Project (EIP) is recently announced the addition of eleven new farmers to the locally led agri-environmental project operating in the area. The Reeks EIP project is a four-year pilot locally led agri-environmental scheme to improve the sustainability and support the economic viability of farming in the Reeks. The project focusses on improving the environmental condition of the land through an incentivised payment scheme, training farmers and supporting the development of collective groups in carrying out necessary works, such as treating invasive species like rhododendron, the management bracken and scrub etc. The eleven new participants are all active sheep farmers in the MacGillycuddy Reeks, with a combined area of 220 hectares being included for habitat management, with site specific actions also included. Currently the Project Team are developing annual work plans with the new farmers who will participate to sustainably manage their High Nature Value Farming Land. Noel Spillane, CEO of South Kerry Development Partnership, lead partner of the Reeks EIP has welcomed the news and stated he ‘is delighted to see the continued interest from the farmers in the area and welcomes the expansion of the project in bringing in new participants, during this very difficult time’. Other stakeholders in the project include the MacGillycuddy Reeks farmer representatives, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Institute of Technology Tralee, Crowley Consultants, the MacGillycuddy Reeks Forum, Kerry County Council and local community group representatives. Patrica Deane, project manager said that they are pleased to be in position to expand the project, and know that it will have a positive impact on the local economy, providing a much needed income source at this difficult time. This will not just benefit local farmers but also for the local merchant businesses that provide farm inputs and materials. LAMENESS: WHAT CAN FARMERS DO ABOUT IT? Lameness is a huge problem on sheep farms, especially this time of the year when animals are being housed and when in-lamb ewes are purchased. The two main causes of lameness are scald and foot-rot on Irish sheep farms. Scald, which is very common in lambs and is caused by a naturally-occurring bacteria called Fusobacterium necrophorum. Scald is mainly an issue on rough pastures and is more than likely going to develop in sheep when they are exposed to wet pastures. Furthermore, scald is the first stage of foot-rot. Next up is foot-rot, which can survive up to 12-14 days in sheep. It is caused by bacteria called Dichelobacter and it has a foul smell. It has the ability to spread rapidly, especially in straw-bedded pens during the housing period. Contagious ovine digital dermatitis (CODD) is commonly found in sheep purchased from the mart and, like foot-rot, it has the ability to spread quickly. In terms of treatment, hill flocks are at an advantage when it comes to preventing lameness because the bacteria that cause scald and foot-rot can’t survive in the acidic soils on the hills. This, in turn, is the reason why there are fewer incidences of lameness in hill flocks compared to lowland sheep. The best time to treat sheep for foot problems is when they are being housed for winter or at weaning time. If you plan to run sheep through a footbath it should consist of either 1kg of zinc sulphate or copper sulphate and mixed with 10L of water. Furthermore, the ewes or lambs should be allowed to stand in the solution for at least three minutes. Straight after, the flock should be allowed to stand on clean concrete for at least one hour. It is best practice to avoid muddy areas post-treatment. As regard to best practice, the aim should be to have less than 5% of the flock lame. It is important farmers treat sheep correctly, as in the case of foot-rot an antibiotic is needed to treat it as a footbath won’t cure it. In the case of any bought-in sheep, they should be isolated from the rest of the flock and monitored for up to three weeks for any signs of health problems. If sheep have been treated three times and are still showing signs of lameness, it is 8 West Kerry Live

DEPARTMENT REMINDS SELLERS AND SUPPLIERS OF PET ANIMALS OF NEW RULES Like other animals, dogs especially produce young typically in springtime. This means that there are currently many pups on the market. With schools closed, there is a temptation to get a pet you your children, to help occupy them, during these trying times. But remember that a pup is not just for trying times, not more than it is for Christmas. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) reminds sellers and suppliers of pet animals of the new rules on the sale, supply and advertising of pet animals (Animal Health and Welfare (Sale or Supply of Pet Regulations) 2019, SI 681 of 2019). The rules came into effect on 1 February 2020. Sellers and suppliers of more than 6 pet animals in a given year must register with DAFM, and maintain certain records. Anyone registered under the Dog Breeding Establishment Act 2010 is not required to further register with DAFM as a seller or supplier of pet animals. All advertisements for the sale or supply of pet animals must include certain minimum information about the pet and the seller or supplier. This includes the registration number issued by DAFM, or the DBE registration number, or in the case of charities, the number issued under the Charities Act 2009. If the pet is a dog, the ad must include its microchip number. DAFM has also launched a voluntary Code of Practice for Sellers and Suppliers of Pet Animals. The Code contains guidelines on animal welfare. It also has guidelines on ensuring potential customers are provided with good quality information on the appropriate care of the animal. The Code of Practice also addresses public health concerns, for example the need for good hygiene when handling animals, and the potential risk to the health of children under the age of 5 associated with contact with reptiles. Existing sellers and suppliers have three months from 1 February to complete their registration with DAFM. However, the requirements regarding recordkeeping and advertisements apply from 1 February. N & P STATEMENTS TO 30 APRIL 2020 NOW AVAILABLE The Department of Agriculture, Food & the Marine have announced that interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for the period January to April 2020 are now available on the Department’s online system www.agfood. ie. These statements are particularly useful to allow farmers to plan for the remainder of the year, in order to ensure compliance with the limits of the Nitrates Regulations, thus avoiding penalties for breaching the limits of 170 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare or the limit for those who hold an approved derogation the limit is 250 kgs of Nitrogen per hectare. Any farmers not availing of derogations need to plan slurry use and slurry exports (to other farm holdings), at this stage. These exports need to be carried out before mid-September and appropriate reportage needs to be complete before the end of the year. There is still plenty of time, but willing accomplices need to be secured to allow these exports. So, get planning. FOREST & GORSE FIRES – HIGH FIRE RISK (CONDITION ORANGE) We have just experienced the driest spring in record, and despite the recent lowlevel rainfall, vegetation on our surrounding hills, and our forest plantations are extremely dry, and basic like tinder-boxes. Now is not the time to be careless, especially with many more people off work, and therefore walking the roads, hills, forests, etc. Arising from increased temperatures and low recent rainfall levels, a high fire risk is deemed to exist in all areas where hazardous fuels such as dead grasses, heather and gorse exist. Based on recent fire incidents, most ignitions risks appear to be associated with illegal dumping activity and public recreation activity on forest and other amenity sites. Fire behaviour during the lifespan of this warning is likely to be influenced by variable light to moderate winds Thursday ahead of rain approaching from the south west, but may be moderated by increased live growth in vegetation. Members of the public intending to visit forests and other recreational sites are reminded of the requirement to remain within 5km of their homes and to adhere to regulations introduced to limit the spread of Covid-19. Vehicles should not be parked at site entrances or impede emergency service access to forest roads. DAFM advise that all outdoor use of fires, barbeques and other open ignition sources be avoided on forest lands and in other highrisk areas until further notice. Fires on lands that receive EU payments such as BPS, ANC, GLAS, etc are

liable to result in large penalties and fines. In these times, it would not be advisable to test DAFM’s resolve regarding gorse fires, as they have threatened severe action against anyone who purposefully starts a fire. The onus is on the landowner to prevent these fires, and occurrence of fires on owned land needs to be explained. Fire services are stretched at present during the current Covid-19 lockdown, and the last thing they need is to be dealing with a fire that is most likely impossible to deal with, and avoidable. So, please be careful, be vigilant and be safe. FARMERS SETTING WILD BIRD COVER FOR GLAS Farmers are reminded that the date is passed for planting Wild Bird Cover, under GLAS. If you haven’t done so already, Shuuush. Don’t say a word. Get on the phone, order the Oats or Barley, (75 kg per Ha) and the Mustard or Linseed (15 Kg per Ha), and get it planted, in the next day or so. Failure to do so may lead to you being ejected from GLAS, and having to pay back all monies received from GLAS, to date. If you don’t do it, the only who will suffer is you.

BUSINESS REOPENING APPEAL. By now most people are well aware of the various dates set out to reopen business and other services after thr lockdown. Kerry County Council seek the views of the business outlets with regard to the measures that need to be discussed to cover social distancing on the streets and public realms particularly after the next phase on June 8th. Basically its how the town will look and operate in the future so a bit of imagination and practical steps are required asap.

Give Cold Sores the Cold Shoulder! Irene Ní Fhlannúra Cold Sores are considered a minor ailment but for those who are prone to them they can be a major cause of pain and discomfort. Caused by the herpes simplex virus, which is related to the same virus responsible for genital herpes - once you have this virus in your system it stays with you for life! For unknown reasons, our body defenses cannot eliminate the virus completely so when it is not active on your mouth, lips and nose, it is snoozing away in the nerves near your brain stem. Once activated, the virus begins to multiply, travels down the nerve to the skin and unleashes its wrath with tiny white blisters, which can be painful and inflamed and eventually crust over leaving an unsightly scab. Activity can be triggered for many different reasons such as - during a bout of flu or a cold, UV radiation from the sun, stress, changes in the immune system, hormonal fluctuations and both physical and emotional trauma. Whatever the trigger is, the common link is a weakened defense system that allows this unwelcome resident an opportunity to wake up and wreak havoc. If you are prone to cold sores, you will be glad to know that there are ways and means to prevent them, shortening outbreaks and providing pain relief. Firstly, recognizing your trigger(s) is important so keep track of when you are most prone to cold sores to build up your defenses during these periods. A varied, healthy diet of fresh wholefoods, fruit and vegetables is the basis of all good defense systems. Avoid or limit foods that weaken your immunity such as processed foods, sugar and alcohol. There is little benefit to spending time and money on lotions and potions if the fundamental diet is rubbish. Once a nutritious diet is established the following extra support can help in preventing and managing cold sore outbreaks. L-Lysine - the herpes virus reproduces itself with the help of amino acid, arginine. Lysine is another amino acid which can take the place of arginine in cell, leaving the virus without a binding site and no place to call home. Eating foods rich in lysine such as turkey, ricotta cheese, avocado and eggs as well as taking a daily supplement of at least 1000mg (double dosage during an outbreak) have been clinically proven to ward off or shorten the severity of cold sores. You can substantially increase your fighting power by adding vitamin C, bioflavonoids and zinc to this supplement regime. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids are readily found in most fresh, raw fruit and vegetables. Eating at least 7 colourful portions daily will ensure you are getting enough. Zinc is necessary to build immunity but also strengthens the epithelial tissue on the lips and the inside of the mouth and nose so that sores cannot get a foothold. Recommended dosage of zinc is 15 - 30mg. As UV light (from the sun) is quite a common trigger, especially now with all the sunshine, it is a good idea to wear sunblock on lips. Look at ingredients when choosing lip balm with SPF as some will contain zinc too, which is a common sun-blocking agent (by reflecting the UV light) in many of the more “natural” brands. Betacarotene - found in all yellow, red and orange fruits and vegetables, strengthen the mucous membranes of the mouth and nose and speeds up healing a cold sore. Carrots, squash, sweet potato, tomatoes, red peppers, melon and apricots are all good sources of betacarotene. Include these foods in your daily diet for prevention and supplement 80-100mg during an outbreak, if necessary. Probiotics - the acidophilus bacteria found in some yogurts or supplements can help counter the herpes virus. Choose natural, organic probiotic yogurt as part of your daily diet. Avoid those with concentrated fruit or sugar added for best results. Udo's Choice have a probiotic lozenge with high potency friendly bacteria which are activated in the mouth, making them ideal during an outbreak. You will find these in the fridge in all good health stores. Vitamin E - also strengthens immunity and epithelial cells. However, foods rich in vitamin E such as nuts and seeds are also rich sources of arginine (best buddy of herpes virus) so best to be cautious with these foods, or at least up your L-lysine intake if you would like to enjoy your nuts and seeds. Other food sources of vitamin E include olives, spinach, turnip greens and avocado.

Astragalus - This virus-killing herb boosts the immune system and is a must in fending off cold sores. Take it at the first sign of a sore and continue until the outbreak is over. Available in tincture or capsule form - a handy one to have in the medicine cupboard. Lemon Balm - this common garden herb is particularly soothing and relieves pain associated with cold sores. Fresh, crushed leaves can be used in a poultice and applied topically or look out for natural cold sore ointments that contain lemon balm. Interestingly, L-lysine, zinc, betacarotene, bioflavonoids and vitamin C are currently under investigation for their anti-viral properties in relation to Covid-19. There is no real data available yet, but it makes sense that antiviral agents found in our diet will play a significant role in our immune health as we emerge from lockdown with coronavirus an ever present threat. If you are interested in learning how to use your food for immune support, I am launching a step-by-step nutrition programme, created for just that! BOOST your Immune Health available from 8th June. From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon From Blennerville to Dingle in 15 days From – Kerry Evening Post, 7 February 1838 Arrived in the port of Dingle, on the 31st January, the brig Fortitude of Millport in Scotland, under its master John Nicholas. This vessel sailed from Blennerville on the 17th of January, with a cargo of oats. She sprung a leak and had to put into Dingle harbour after 15 days at sea..

Body of Young Woman From – Cork Constitution, 19 November 1831 In late January the body of a female was recovered from the sea off the Great Blasket Island. Parts of a wrecked vessel were also found nearby. When the female was taken from the water she looked as though she had only just died. She wore a night-dress, petticoats and grey stockings. She looked very young and wore no jewellery, according to a report by Mr. Bowie, the Inspecting Commander of the Dingle Coast Guard. In his opinion the wrecked vessel was a small pleasure boat of about ten tons and, bearing in mind the wind directions at the time, he suggested the vessel may have come from the Shannon area.

Animals Destroyed From – Dublin Daily Express, 6 November 1888 [Extracts from an 1887 report] On the night of Tuesday the 15th of November 1887, a cow was removed from a cow house in Ballyoughteragh, county Kerry. The animal was the property of local farmer Michael Fitzgerald. She was driven through lanes and fields to a remote area of Smerwick Harbour. A heavy stone was attached to her neck before she was driven into the sea where she drowned. In October that same year a mare, belonging to James Curran of Dingle, county Kerry, was removed from her stable and was found butchered on Ballincolla strand two days later.

Dingle Harbour Bill

Livestock Farming During The Famine From – Tralee Chronicle, 24 July 1847 Disease has considerably subsided and mortality has decreased in Dingle and the western parishes. Live agricultural stock is fast diminishing in the poorer districts of Corkaguiney. In place of being overstocked, as it used to be, there are not sufficient cows or sheep to feed the lowlands. Young stock have almost entirely disappeared, having being either killed, stolen or sold at inadequate prices. Fine young heifers were sold for £2 and less that would fetch elsewhere treble and quadruple the sum. Sheep are becoming very scarce, though the meat market is still low from the anxiety of the farmers to dispose of the sheep.

Great Shoals Of Herring From – Southern Reporter, 22 June 1865 There has been an excellent start to the fishing season in Dingle. It is reported that vast shoals of fish are swarming in the bay and harbour. One vessel is believed to have caught 6,000 herring in a single haul. Very strong prices are being realised and appreciated, especially by the poorer fishermen who are landing large catches.

Wrecked Near Dingle From – Kentish Gazette, 13 February 1773 It is reported from Ireland that an unknown ship, carrying a cargo of rum and timber, is on shore near Dingle in County Kerry. She is believed to have been sailing from the West Indies and was caught in a great storm. It is understood that her captain and most of her crew have been lost.

From – Kerry Evening Post, 15 April 1885 The Dingle Provisional Harbour Bill proposes to incorporate ‘the Dingle Harbour Commissioners’ and to constitute them a local lighthouse and pilotage authority. The Commissioners are to be empowered to regulate and improve Dingle Harbour and to acquire the existing ‘Dingle pier’. Also, to be empowered to contribute towards the construction and maintenance of a harbour light, to levy rates and to borrow a sum not exceeding four thousand pounds. The order provides for the transfer to the Commissioners of a lighthouse, proposed to be erected in or near the harbour by the Commissioners of Public Works in Ireland out of the Sea Fisheries Fund.

From – Derby Mercury, 23 April 1779 A report has been received from Tralee that two weeks ago more than forty French marines were landed ‘on the neighbouring coast’ from two warships. They were repulsed by the Kerry Independents and driven back to their ships with substantial losses. [No information available on the exact location of this incident].

Does your Septic Tank need to be emptied? WE WILL GET TO YOU WITHIN A DAY!! Also: Tractor & 14 Ton Dump Trailer

From – Preston Herald, 21 January 1865 On Sunday the 15th of January the ship Ellen Sophia was wrecked on the rocks ‘off Dingle Head’ and all on board were drowned, as far as can be determined. The vessel was under the command of Captain Birkett and was bound from Demerara [Guyana] for Liverpool. The ship was seen being driven by a strong gale of wind and flying distress signals. She appeared to be attempting to reach shelter in Smerwick Harbour before being smashed on the rocks where she sank’ almost immediately’, according to witnesses.

Small Changes: Beauty Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but considering the current value of the beauty industry is $532 billion it would seem that very few of us are taking any chances by leaving our appearance to nature. There was a time when the height of a daily skincare routine was to cleanse tone and moisturise whereas now it’s advisable to pre-cleanse, cleanse, exfoliate, navigate whether your skin needs a brightening, hydrating or soothing serum, spot treat pigmentation and congestion, moisturise and apply SPF of course. There are similarily extensive grooming routines for hair, teeth, epilation, make-up, nails etc. It’s obvious the industry are very good at developing new products that we didn’t know we needed but additionally in the past number of years many companies have begun to recognise the value of the eco conscious consumer. With so many brands jumping on the bandwagon it can be difficult to separate those who are making a real effort from those that are just greenwashing to increase profits. So with this in mind here follows an explanation of some of the terms used to advertise eco-credentials in the beauty industry and some simple swops and changes that can be made to your grooming routine to make it more sustainable. The clean beauty movement has been gaining traction due to concerns about the safety and the environmental and social impacts of cosmetics industry. It is widely acknowledged that few brands meet all the benchmarks that merit a truly sustainable and ethical label but there is a sliding scale of adherence to criteria. In order to identify which satisfy your personal principles it is necessary to get to grips with the ‘clear as mud’ terminology used. Organic, Clean & Natural- Certified organic beauty products do not contain GMOs, synthetic colours, preservatives or chemicals. Neither are or manufactured herbicides, pesticides or artificial fertilisers used in the manufacture of their ingredients. These are products which consumers are increasingly seeking out due to mounting evidence in relation to the ecotoxicity and toxicity to humans of ingredients such as parabens, sulphates, phthalates and oxybenzone (in sunscreen) and increased awareness of the impact of conventional production methods on the environment. While ‘organic’ is a fairly regulated term the word ‘natural’ is essentially meaningless when used on its own in branding and a very common word used for greenwashing. For example, a product may contain a natural ingredient such as beeswax or bicarbonate of soda but this does not equate that all the other ingredients used are natural or non-synthetic nor is there any guarantee that every ingredient is safe or beneficial for topical use. ‘Clean’ is a relatively new concept but also unregulated. It is increasingly being used to denote products free of harmful chemicals, fragrances and dyes. Clean products can contain synthetic as well as more naturally derived ingredients. A lot of synthetic ingredients made in a lab are safe and effective (a product needs to work as well as being sustainable!). In addition, in the same way that there is organic and non-organic fruit and vegetables, certified organic ingredients are usually more expensive so some products which cannot use the certified organic label may still be using safe synthetic and non-synthetic ingredients. Cruelty-free – products with ingredients that have not been tested on animals at any stage in their development. These ingredients can be synthetic or non-synthetic but perversely can be animal derived. The Leaping Bunny logo certifies that a product is cruelty free although brands with a parent company in China can advertise a product as cruelty free without the Leaping Bunny as all Chinese products must undergo animal testing.

and ethics of business practices also need to be examined. These include fair trade and transparency of supply chains, robust waste and resource management and packaging. While it can be difficult to identify brands employing best practice in terms of social responsibility or resource management, packaging is an area which is very obvious to us as consumers. Data from 2018 revealed that more than 120 billion units of cosmetics packaging were produced globally, the majority of which were not recyclable. If refillable containers were used for cosmetics as much as 70% of carbon emissions associated with the beauty industry could be eliminated. Until this option becomes mainstream we can choose to be more responsible consumers by electing to avoid excessive and/or non-recyclable packaging such as aerosols, pump containers and compacts with mirrors. Recycling correctly by washing out residual product from containers such as shampoo bottles is also very important. There are a number of further cheap, simple and effective changes that can be made without needing to conduct in-depth research into the ingredients and level of corporate responsibility of your favourite products and beauty brands. 1. Choose better materials and avoid single-use plastics- stainless steel safety razors, bamboo toothbrushes, plastic free dental floss, menstrual cups, microbeads, plastic free cotton buds, solid shampoo and conditioner and soap bars are among the many sustainable product alternatives to try that work out the same price or cheaper per use as conventional products. 2. Ditch the wipes. All beauticians recommend the use of facial wipes only in emergencies. Besides not being ideal for your skin, they are an environmental nightmare made from plastic based polyester which sit in landfills, contribute to fatbergs which block sewage systems (they should never be flushed!) and pollute seas. Cotton wool should also be avoided. It is not compostable, it takes 20,000L of water to produce 1kg of cotton wool and the herbicides and pesticides used in its production have a very destructive environmental impact. Muslin cloths or reusable sustainable organic cotton facecloths (can be purchased for as little as 1 euro!) which can washed after use are ideal. Alternatively you could cut up old cotton towels for the same purpose. 3. Go easy on the sheet masks. Sheet masks for feet and the face have been gaining in popularity in recent years but they create a lot of unnecessary waste. Sheet masks are not recyclable and many people seem to flush these down the toilet too (only the three p’s should ever be flushed - pee, poo and toilet paper). The plastic and metallic packaging they come in cannot be recycled either. Opt for the more traditional cream masks or perhaps try a homemade mask. 4. Don’t stockpile beauty products. Finish the lotions and potions you already have before trying the latest miracle product. Look out for multi-use products e.g. eyebrow pencils can double as an eye-liner. 5. Be mindful of how much product you are using. A small amount can go a long way. 6. Don’t leave the water running when it is required as part of your routine i.e. brushing your teeth, washing your face. 7. Consult with your beautician, hairdresser, dermatologist etc. Trusted professionals can give advice on the best and most appropriate products to use for your hair and skin type and will usually have a lot of information on the sustainability of the products they recommend.

Vegan- products that do not contain any ingredients derived from animals. This does not necessarily mean that the ingredients have not been tested on animals. Palm Oil Free- products that do not contain palm oil or any of its derivatives. The use of uncertified palm oil has led to the destruction of rainforests and the animals such as orangutans. There are however also products that use certified sustainable palm oil (RSPO logo). Waterless Beauty- This is a new trend which refers to products containing little or no water. These usually have concentrated formulas implying a bigger impact on skin and that the reduced water contributes to a smaller ecological footprint. This is not necessarily the case as the harvesting of ingredients, packaging and shipping all require water plus most of these products need to be diluted with water at home. If all these considerations were not overwhelming enough, the sustainability

Camp Notes

COMHGHÁIRDEACHASCongratulations to Cian Griffin, Kilteenbane, Camp on achieving 2nd place in the All Ireland Transition Year Photojournalism. Cian is a student at Gaelcholaiste Chiarraí, Traili.

CHURCH ANNOUNCEMENTMass is broadcast on Radio Kerry on Sundays at 10.00 a.m.More information - www.dioceseofkerry.ie.

OBITUARY The entire community of Camp was deeply saddened at the news of the death of Mike O'Neill on Thursday last following a short illness.

MINDFULNESSFree Mindfulness courses on line. www. susanbarrettmindfulness.com. Telephone Number - 087 2838171.

Mike was a real tourism ambassador for West Kerry talking to visitors and promoting the peninsula every day of his life in his pub, The Railway Tavern, Camp. He had a great way with people and he loved meeting everyone.

And the pub was as good as a museum of the Dingle Train with a large collection of Railway artefacts on display. Mike built up a great Sunday Traditional session in the pub over the years and he played a few tunes himself too. He was very theatrical, a natural on stage with The Camp Drama Group. Mike loved to travel and every spring took him on a big adventure to far off lands, where he savoured the cultures and enjoyed sampling the local cuisines. Above all though Mike was happiest at home, he loved his garden and nature and being outdoors. He took long mountain walks with his great friend Gordon and dog Jesse, the Dingle Way was a favourite, often finishing in Cloghane, the home of his forefathers where he felt a part of him belonged. Mike was highly respected in the community and The railway Tavern was headquarters to clubs and organisations from all over the county and he welcomed each and every one of them. So it was no surprise that despite the current Covid-19 restrictions, around 200 people turned out on Monday and took part in a socially distanced guard of honour lining the road as the funeral cortege led by a convoy of VW Cars and Vans conveyed Mike to his final resting place in Camp Cemetary. A beautifully illustrated poster of Mikes VW car, bearing the caption - One of Camp's True Treasures, said it all. Ní bheidh a léithéid arís ann.

Sympathy is extended to all. Sympathy is also extended to the family and friends of Séan Máirtín Bacaeir, Coimín, Ballydavid who died recently. Séan was among those who organised and led the centenary commemorative walk from Ballyferriter to Tralee in April 2016. The walk was known as an tSiúlóid Mór in 1916 when 40 volunteers walked overnight up Conor Pass and into Tralee to meet the Aud due to come ashore the following morning in Fenit with Roger Casement on board. Among the walkers who set out for the re-enactment of this historic walk in 2016 were grandchildren and great grandchildren of the original participants in 1916. They were met with tea and sandwiches by a group of people who came up from Brandon, and at 1.15 am Tomaisíns in Stradbally and at 4.30 am, Mike O Neill opened his pub, The Railway Tavern in Camp where they had some more food and a group of Camp people waited to meet and chat with them and Nora Rice sang a few songs to help shorten the journey. Séan was a member of Cumann Thomáis Ághas, West Kerry Sinn Fein. Séan is survived by his wife Breda, brother Paud, sisters Jodi, Peig, Marian and Marie, nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, relatives and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dhílis. Honey Roasted Duck Breast with Green Lentils and Redcurrant Sauce Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School

2 cloves garlic peeled and crushed

for the duck

1 carrot, peeled and diced finely

Use a sharp knife to score the fat on the duck, this will help the fat render as it cooks. Season the duck breast well with salt and pepper.

250g le puy or green lentils 200ml chicken stock dash of sherry vinegar salt and pepper for the sauce 1 tbsn. redcurrant jelly

Duck breast is so tasty and is and versatile. It is rich so make sure that you when you cook rich foods always add some acid somewhere to the dish. In this case you will find vinegar added to the lentils and to the sauce. You will find good Irish Duck breasts in you supermarket or ask your butcher to get you some. Serves 4 Ingredients for the duck 3-4 duck breasts (depending on the size 3 may do 4 people) 30g honey for the lentils knob of butter 1 shallot, peeled and diced sprig of thyme leaves picked

150ml red wine 1 tspn. balsamic or sherry vinegar 250ml chicken stock

Put a pan on over medium heat and add the duck breasts fat side down, don’t add oil as the fat will start to render. Allow this to cook for about 3 minutes, turn the duck breasts over and cook for a further 3 minutes. Turn the heat up and brush the honey over the fat side of the duck breast and turn the duck breast over again for a further 2 minutes. The duck breast should be around medium at this stage but continue to cook for another few minutes if you don’t want it medium).

a knob of butter

Take them off the heat and allow them to rest for about 5 minutes before slicing and serving.

Method

for the sauce

for the lentils

Put the redcurrant jelly, wine and vinegar into a small pot, place this over a medium heat. Reduce it until this starts to darken and get sticky, add the stock and cook for a further 10 minutes. The sauce should have reduced to a syrup. Whisk in a knob of butter just before serving.

In a small pot over low to medium heat add the butter followed by the shallots, allow this to cook for about 3-5 minutes. Add the thyme and garlic. Let this cook for a few minutes before adding the carrot, again let this cook for a few minutes. Slowing down your cooking a little especially at the beginning will bring out some of the sweetness in the vegetables. Add the lentils and the stock. Cook this for about 15-20 minutes, they should have a small bite but should be able to hold their shape. Dress them with a little sherry vinegar while warm. Season with salt and pepper. Flannery and a team of volunteers, we have prepared a fantastic 4 week programme of coaching sessions and mentoring to help you learn to play golf this summer. The programme will kick off week commencing 8th June - once the 5km travel restrictions are eased.

What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís We Need Imagination Now More Than Ever. Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub launches a collaborative workshop in an effort to imagine and shape new possibilities for the Dingle Peninsula. Creativity, Innovation, Resilience.

WE ARE OPEN FOR PHONE & E-MAIL QUERIES PHONE (Kerry):

0761 07 7860

A remote & virtual workshop to gather people interested and committed to explore new possibilities for the Dingle Peninsula. It’s an opportunity to do better than just adapt or react to this new environment infused by recent uncertainty, but to start fostering how we might thrive by shaping it. We believe imagination — the capacity to create, evolve, and experience things or situations that don’t yet exist — is the crucial factor in seizing and creating new opportunities, and finding new paths to growth. What can emerge when people working in different sectors start collaborating and inventing hybrid solutions for their future together? What are the new, local, and fresh insights that the Dingle Peninsula could actually bring to this new accelerated digital transformation? What? It’s a collaborative workshop experience where we will imagine alternative scenarios and infuse ideas for new concepts and inventions around topics relevant to the Peninsula: tourism, sustainability, energy, creativity, agriculture, entrepreneurship, culture among others. A series of creative exercises within a playful journey to spark innovation and suspend our disbelief about change. Community driven innovation. The result will later receive design direction and will be showcased. The workshop is designed and facilitated by www.imaginationofthings. com. When? 13:30 - 16:30 Friday 19 June: Creative Exercises & Work Session Saturday 20 June & Sunday 21 June: Groups work independently and each one has a session with Imagination of Things for feedback & consultation. Each group can organize their time accordingly. 13:30 - 17:00 Monday 22 June: Building Concepts & Wrap-up Total time commitment: Around 10h over 4 days. Email info@dinglehub.com to join us and be part of re-imagining the change. On another note, many people and companies are realising the benefits of remote working and it is most certainly going to feature largely in the way we work in the future. I’d like to draw your attention to one particular role that would be an exciting opportunity for the right candidate. www. growremote.ie are hiring a Grow Remote Manager and, as is their ethos, the role is fully remote so can be based anywhere in Ireland. If someone from the Dingle Peninsula were successful in their application, we’d love to welcome them to our Hub Community and could do so much to help support them in this role. We are delighted to be working with Claire McElligott, ESB Networks and Catríona Fallon, Green Arts Initiative on the ESB Dingle Arts Commission with a fund total of €4,000 for the successful artist to create a piece of work. It’s open to artists living on the Dingle Peninsula. The chosen art form and proposed project will speak to the brief and be accessible to the commissioning organisation (ESB Networks), the local community and the wider public. Audience engagement is a key element of the commission. Overall the work and final piece should encapsulate what the ‘Activated Energy Citizen’ of the future looks like on the Dingle Peninsula and beyond? It should relate to and emphasise the energy and sustainability work on the Dingle Peninsula with the ESB Dingle Project. Engagement with the projects to date and people involved is recommended to get a full picture of the scope. The Irish Civil War law, execution and atrocity le

Seán Enright foilsithe ag

Merrion Press ‘During the Irish Civil War eighty-three executions were carried out by the National Army of the emerging Free State government, including four prisoners not tried or convicted of any charge. After the war the trial records were destroyed and the execution policy became a bitter memory that was rarely discussed. In this groundbreaking work, Seán Enright examines how a climate emerged in which prisoners could be tried by rudimentary military courts and then executed, and how so many other prisoners were killed without any trial at all. The government of the emerging state relied on the National Army to fight the war and implement policy, but the National Army was new and lacked discipline. More than 125 further prisoners were killed in the custody of the state; shot at the point of capture or killed in custody. ‘Shot while trying to escape’ became an all too familiar press release. Seventeen prisoners were killed in the Kerry landmine massacres alone.

Stay safe and well everyone. Live in a Creative Place, Work in a Creative Space

In the struggle to survive, the new state turned a blind eye and the rule of law simply unravelled. Featuring new material from the Irish Military Archives, The Irish Civil War: law, execution and atrocity examines the dark legacy of this chaotic and bitter conflict.’ - Merrion Press

Cad a tharlódh dá bhfaighfead duine bás? Bheadh méar á shíneadh le scata. Níl aon dealramh le dul sa tseans mar is beatha daoine atá i gceist. Tátar don dtuiscint go mbuailfeadh an Víoras ar ais mar bhí i dtosach, ‘le daoine nár buaileadh ach go dtiocfaí suas leo an dara babtha mheasfá. Is daoine breóite agus aosta is mó a buailtear, ach tá sé tréis páistí agus daoine lúfar láidir sláintiúil a threascairt . Má leanann cúrsaí mar tá, tá gach seans go gclaíofar an Víoras nó go ndíobrófaír thar aoir na spéire é ,ach beídh slad déanta sara gclaíofar é. Bhíos ag léamh i nuachtán Domhnaigh, Sasanach a dúirt gur dheineadar praiseach i dtosach. Ní raibh ach chúig triail sa tseachtain acu. Sara -dtáinigh ciall d’óibh bhí na mílte ag fanacht agus cúrsaí ina gcíor-thuathail. Tá siad ar a gcroí díchill anois ag iarraidh an slad a mhoilliú. ‘Sé Sasana an ceann dos tíortha is measa san Éoraip le breis agus 37, 000 duine marbh básaithe. Bheadh siad ag magadh fé thíortha eile faid is tá cúrsaí acu féin tóin thar ceann. Is deacair conas a bhíodar chomh dall agus chomh dána le daoine a mharú le ceann-dánaíochta agus easpa eólais.

RTE Is iad lucht an tsacair agus an rugair a bhíonn furmhór an tsaoil á gceistiú ag RTE. Ba dhóigh leat go mba dhéithe beaga iad. Má bhí aon duine ag féachaint ar an gcuiche Leathchraobh Éireann mionúr iománaíochta idir Gaillimh agus an Clár bheadh a chroi/croí ina mbéal aige/aici. An cheithre bháide agus pointí a ghnóthaidh Joe Canning. Sea, fear mór láidir ealaíonta ar Pháirc na himeartha. Bhí an chluiche, leathchraobh iomána ag dul siar píosa, sé nó séacht blianta in adharca a chéile Bhíos ann an lá agus chonaic na mílte mar a cuireadh méar i súil Cooper. B’shin ceann dos na clis ná feaca an réiteóir ná aon duine dén mbeirt a bhí ar dhá thaobh an bháide? Bhí sé sin trom-chuiseach an lá sin agus tá fós. An mbeidh cluichí á n-imirt gan lucht féachana? Níl an t-airgead ag CLG mar a bronntar ar fhóirne sacair agus imreóire rugair agus mar sin. Má mhaireann an víoras is dócha go mbeidh bailiteacht ar gach éinne. Ná deinimís manaigh dúinn féin go fóill. Bhí buntáiste againn faid is bhí an aimsir bhreá agus ní ró-dheas í an báisteach fhuar, buan. Tá aimsir mheala fachta againn agus d’fhéadfad sí fanúint tamall eile. Seans go bhfuilmíd ag lorg an iomarca. Má leanann an aimsir mar seo ní bheidh puinn eitealán ag eitilt..

We need to talk about butts…. No, not that kind – the other kind. The really nasty kind. The kind that we throw away without thinking twice about. Because here’s the reality – they cause damage. So much damage. Tidy Town groups in Dingle, Killorglin and around the smaller villages are plagued by cigarette butts throw around the streets, outside apartments and other areas where people congregate Did you know?.. • Cigarette related litter makes up over 50% of all litter items nationally. • Cigarette butts are not biodegradable. • It takes up to 12 years for a cigarette butt to break down. • The chemicals found in one cigarette butt can leach out and contaminate approximately 7.5 litres of water within one hour. Think about it. When a cigarette butt is thrown on the street, if it’s not swept up, it will be washed down a nearby drain which will discharge to a river, which will discharge to the sea. The Ocean Conservancy find that cigarette butts are one of the top litter items found on beaches across 190 countries during their annual International Clean Up Day. We need to make sure we bin our butts. No excuses. It’s not rocket science. But many people are not aware of the impact simply throwing away their butt can have. So, to anyone reading this who knows a smoker – enlighten them about the damage that simply flicking a butt away can have. There is no such place as away
