Dingle Notes Richie Williams FUNDRAISING. Two recent fundraising efforts by local groups merit special mention this week. The pupils of Scoil Iognáid Rís Boys Primary in the Mall donated €1220 to the sensory gardens project in West Kerry Community Hospital from the proceeds of their used/unwanted clothes collection. Dingle Cycling Club organised a 7 hour Spinathon on the Saturday of August Weekend at Holyground and raised €2473 for Comfort For Chemo. This Kerry Charity are aimimg to build a specialised chemotherapy unit near University Hospital Kerry in Tralee. Well done to all concerned especially as the proceeds go to projects here in the Kingdom. BOATYARD PLANS. A reminder that submissions/observations from the public on the Public Realm and Outdoor Dining Infrastructure at the Boatyard Site in Strand Street must be received by Kerry County Council by Thursday 16th of September. The plans and particulars of the proposed development are available online at www.kerrycoco.ie. The funding available for the project must be taken up by the end of 2021. Having waited for some movement on this prominent site for many years it is vitally important that a development is progressed within the timeframe allowed for the benefit of the whole community. RETIREMENT. Guimid gach beannacht ar Eilín Ní Chearna-Uí Shíthigh a deirigh as a phost i Raidió Na Gaeltachta le déanaí tar eis 40 blian a caitheamh ann. Gan dabht beidh níos mó am ag Eilín anois chun a lán amhrán eile a fhoghlaim agus b'fheidir CD nua a chur le cheile comh maith. EVENTS. Good to hear that a new event is being organised over the weekend in Dingle. Titled "Ceolcoirm Tobann" this music weekend from Friday to Sunday will be held outdoors at the rear of Paul Geaney's in Main Street. The programme features many local groups and by show time it seems that online tickets will be very scarce indeed. Well done to the organisers and heres hoping the fine weather will not desert us until at least midnight on Sunday. TIDY TOWNS. Dingle Harbour Area was classified as moderately littered in a recent National Business Against Litter Survey. Some social media criticism ensued, Dingle Tidy Towns Volunteers would like to invite those concerned to join the Work Evenings on Mondays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. FAREWELL. Very sad news coming to hand as we go to print of the sudden death of two local business people. Christy Quill, proprietor of the Strand House Enterprise played a big part in developing a thriving clothing retail and cafe business creating employment for many local people in the process.

Pause and Take a Deep Breath to Connect with Late Summer – The Fifth Season.
Irene Ní Fhlannúra These warm sunny days have provided us with the perfect transition from Summer to Autumn – to wind down from the high energy of Summer and adjust to the lower energy of the cooler months ahead. This time of year, Late Summer, is considered a season of its own accord in many cultures around the world, in which five seasons in the year is the norm. In fact, us Westerners, are one of the few populations that do not recognize this extra season that falls in between Summer and Autumn. From our perspective in the modern world, it probably doesn’t resonate in our busy lives but in reality, it is a wonderful opportunity to pause after the high energy of Summer and take a deep breath before we hunker down for Autumn and Winter, going with the natural flow of energy of the Seasons. While this might seem like “woo-woo” to some, Nature has its own calendar – Nature follows its own course and no matter what is happening in your world, seasons will change regardless. Use this time to get ready to go with the flow and fall gently into Autumn with your body and mind intact. Late Summer occurs in August or September, a brief pause while Nature adjusts itself to fall towards the ground to rest and recuperate. It is a time when nerves are frazzled, tummies are nervous and breathing begins to slow down as we adapt to the change. This “in-between” season provides us with the opportunity to get the body and mind right for the darker, cooler times of Autumn and Winter. Resistance is futile! We have all witnessed the fall out of dis-ease and stress while living our lives to the max but after 18 months of restrictions and the privilege to examine our lifestyle and working routines, we must realise that there is wisdom and understanding in the Natural world that is worth heeding as we navigate our way out of this prolonged pandemic. Here are some of the best ways to be at ease with the change and get the timely tune-up for our health and well-being. The organs associated with Late Summer are the stomach and spleen. Closely situated to each other in the body and central to our nourishment and immunity. The foods of Late Summer, grown locally or foraged from our surroundings replenish and nourish us ahead of Autumn and Winter. Blackberries, plums and other dark-skinned fruits are packed with Lutein, Astaxanthin and Zeaxanthin to repair damage done to our skin and eyes by UV light during the Summer. These powerful antioxidants are most potent right now because this is when we need them most. Eat them fresh from the briars now and preserve the surplus in jams and jellies for the months ahead. Apples, pears, damsons and other fleshy fruits support the stomach with pectin, a protective fibre source to prevent seasonal tummy bugs and bouts of gastro-intestinal illness. The gut microbiome will also benefit from these fruits, building up the colonies of bacteria we need during the Winter. This is a good time to include fermented foods in your diet, prepared from the lush harvest or supplement with a broad spectrum probiotic for that extra boost. Late Summer is the time to replenish energy spent during the high intensity and activity of Summer months. You can do this by going to bed earlier, taking more time after your evening meal to unwind and giving yourself permission to take care of yourself. With the evenings closing in, Nature is reminding us to slow down, listen up. The emotion associated with Late Summer is Worry. Before the distractions of modern living, 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
our ancestors staved off worry preparing for Autumn by celebrating the harvest, preserving foods and revelling in gatherings now that the hard work was done. Today, we are far removed from the seasonal traditions of our past, yet these were common Late Summer activities just a couple of generations ago. Don’t worry, trust Nature and do what you need to make life flow easier as we move through the Seasons. The Late Summer kitchen is well-stocked with a wide variety of produce. If you’re not into preserving your own food, there are plenty smaller producers doing this very well. Pick up some jams, chutneys, pickled foods and dried herbal teas to soothe the nerves and build up the stomach barriers. And what about those kitchen cupboards? It’s also a good time to clear them out and go through your herbs, spices and dried food staples – swapping out the old items for fresher, more nourishing produce. Cooking in Late Summer brings some warmth to the menu. After a Summer diet of fresh fruit, salads and minimally cooked foods, you can now enjoy a little longer cooking, baked foods and stewed foods. Aim for a 50/50 ratio between raw and cooked foods serving up dishes like Quiche with salad, chunky vegetable soups, topped with a little raw foods or sauerkraut. Sushi made with cooked rice and raw fish or vegetables is a good example of getting this ratio right. The spices that bring warmth and comfort to your meals in Late Summer include ginger, turmeric, cinnamon and cardamom – perfect partners to the foods of the season. Herbal teas of sage, lavender, chamomile, St. John’s worth and lemon balm will soothe the frazzled nervous system and help bring you down to earth after the busy Summer. Lastly, before Autumn kicks in – get your Vitamin D levels checked. Optimizing your Vitamin D status after the Summer sun is simple and your test results let you know whether you need to supplement to maintain levels or if you need a more therapeutic dose to make up a shortfall. Either way, having Vitamin D levels within a healthy range will dramatically improve your health, immunity, bone health and mood throughout the next few months. on October 2nd. We are a local community group and we are organizing an Artists weekend in the village. It will have a festival feel to it and we are encouraging schools and families to attend and learn from mentors who can instruct and guide in terms of live drawing of village life in Autumn. The event will invite 10 artists and have them mentor school-going children and adults on the street in the village. Children will be supervised by their parents. Benches will be set up and the material will be provided. We have some sponsorship/support and are looking for more. We would like to self-finance this event with registrations at 25 euro to participate in 2 workshops each. Text 086-8035464 for more details. The fascinating story of the excavations at some of the oldest extant monuments in Ireland is told in a new book published by Kerry County Council. The portal tombs at Killaclohane near Milltown date to around 3,700 BC at the beginning of the Neolithic Period in Ireland and are considered to be among the most important archaeological features of the Kerry and Irish landscape. The tombs are considered to be monuments to the end of the hunterVehicle Testing LightforCommercial Vehicles gatherer lifestyle whichfor hadall persisted thousands of years, and the transition to and adoption of agriculture, which heralded an end to a nomadic existence and the adoption of the settled way of life.

The project, overseen by Kerry County Archaeologist, Dr Michael Connolly, included excavation, research and analysis of the material and data recovered from the tombs. A wide range of significant items were uncovered, including finely crafted flint tools and weapons as well as Neolithic pottery and provided significant evidence about how the tombs were constructed. ‘The excavations also showed that the tombs had a long history of reuse both for burial and as focal points in the landscape used to create lineages and connections to both the peoples of the past and, more importantly, the land itself, said Michael.

and recoup this money from those who have responsibility over the national park and with state responsibility.

CONSULTATION ON DRAFT INTERVENTIONS FOR FUTURE CAP EXTENSION
POTENTIAL BEAM CLAWBACK OF €8M FROM FARMERS
Not to be negative, or too negative anyway, many feel that we Irish and especially the farming sector within the country be given a say in CAP evolution is laughable. Our country is 1% of the EU population, and our farming sector amounts to little over 5% of this population giving us approximately 0.05% of the overall EU population. How much influence will we have. But we must soldier on, and put our faith in those elected to represent us.
3,634 BEAM (Beef Exceptional Aid Measure) participants are facing clawbacks amounting to a potential €8 million and there are concerns that this issue needs to be addressed immediately. The Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM) provided farmers with temporary financial aid in response to a prolonged period of depressed beef prices. However, to avail of the scheme, farmers were required to commit a 5% reduction of bovine livestock manure nitrogen. Unfortunately, this became confusing over time, and guidance to farmers and advisors was scarce and inadequate at best, resulting in late decisions by farmers. In an attempt to counteract this ill-fated scheme, DAFM offered farmers an updated reference period last February, effectively facilitating an extension in meeting the 5% target. This began all too late, back in February of this year, the dogs on the street knew and were stating clearly that more flexibility would be needed with the reference period It has now been reported that 3,634 farmers, who did not avail of the deferral, did not reach the required 5% reduction. This will essentially result in DAFM seeking to recoup some €8 million from these farmers. At the time the extension was secured, reports suggested that the crux of the issue was that the agricultural advisors professionals differed from the Department of Agriculture as to how to calculate nitrate figures. Given the confusion surrounding the scheme, it is unfair to continue operating the scheme in this fashion, and causing financial loss to the farming community. Given that many other farmers who entered the scheme on the same basis will now be continuing to work towards meeting the reduction over an extended period, I am calling on the minister to find an alternative solution to simply penalising these farmers. The fairest solution would seem to be to implement a blanket extension across the board for all farmers who have not yet met the scheme’s requirements. FARMERS FACING PENALTIES FOR KILLARNEY FIRE. Following recent fires in Killarney National Park, it has been discovered that a number of farmers will face penalties/fines relating to these fires, as they rendered parts of their land ineligible, under Department of Agriculture Land Eligibility regulation(s). This is despite the fact that the fires started in the National Park, were caused by others, and the originating lands belong to the state. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. This may not be the biggest crime against humanity perpetrated by a government, but it is a pitiful way to administrate or govern a sector as important as farming and agriculture. When such an occurance arises, there is a need for the minister responsible to call on his staff to cease and desist, and surely some of our local politicians and national and local level (from all parties) should be highlighting this. If the fire stared on private lands, and spread to NPWS land, they most certainly would not face censure, so why is it not the same for all. The penalty sanctions are for burned portions of land on each of their respective holdings. The DAFM has already in place, a policy of penalizing farmers for burning lands outside of the prescribed burning timeframe from March 1st – August 31st. The farmers affected have maintained, nurtured and kept their holdings adjacent to Killarney National park in pristine order. In the spring of this year, Garda reports stated that the wildfire had started naturally with no evidence of criminality. Yet, the DAFM has now chosen to penalise farmers, who are in the unfortunate position of farming lands adjacent to the national park, for the wildfire incident. These farmers are primary producers, an essential workforce trying to make out a living on some of the most challenging landscapes on the island of Ireland. This heavy-handed approach is akin to penalising these farmers for their neighbours having a fire. The National Park is stateowned, and in its failure to have adequate fire breaks at the boundaries of lands owned by private citizens, the full burden of responsibility lies with the state. If the DAFM wishes to claw back money from anybody, we suggest that the DAFM take the most sensible and practical approach 12 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
Farmers now have until Friday 3rd September (which is tomorrow) to make submissions under the consultation process, the previous deadline was 27th August. The minister and his department state that they are committed to ensuring that all farmers have an opportunity to have their voices heard as part of the consultation process. Let us hope that he both hears what we have to say, and acts on our needs. And that there be less emphasis on penalties and fines in new schemes. If you ever have to opportunity to attend a DAFM briefing on a new scheme, you will discover that there is usually more time and prominence given to the penalties and fines as than to the benefits ((either financial or environmental of…), in any presentation. If you start of with a negative, people will try to think of ways around these obstacles. If the positives are highlighted, then people will look forward to doing things right and wonder when they can get started. There will be a further consultation process later in the year before the final CAP programme is sent to the EU Commission for approval. It is at times like this that we wish that we still had Phil Hogan on the commission, as he would get much more done, for our farmers, and the farming community across Europe also. ONLY 204 FEMALE FARMERS IN KERRY IN KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER SCHEME This may come as a surprise to many of you but it should not. According to Radio Kerry, there are just 204 female farmers who took part in Knowledge Transfer Schemes in Kerry. The schemes involve sharing skills and encourage efficiency and are worth up to €100 million in total in payments for all farmers taking part. The newly-formed Women in Agriculture Stakeholders Group says that only 204 female farmers in Kerry took part in the Knowledge Transfer Schemes out of 3,173 female farmers in the county. This cannot be because farming is perceived as being overly physical and strenuous, and much of the physical drudgery has been taken out of the sector. Women have proved in the past to be excellent business-minds, innovators and managers in the general work-place, and in many cases leading figures in many sectors. So, why, one must ask are they slower to be involved in the farming sector. Is it them, or is it others? Certainly, it isn’t because they find it intimidating business. Is it just tradition, that farms are generally bequeath to male heirs? Maybe the answer to these questions and others lie not with our female farmer population, but with the writers of wills, in the past, and those currently contemplating writing one. Through a Freedom of Information request, the group found 111 female farmers in Kerry were in dairy KT groups, 91 in beef, two in equine and none in sheep KT groups. The Women in Agriculture Stakeholders Group says the low numbers point to a worrying future for the diversity of the sector in Kerry. The Department of Agriculture own’s analysis shows only 3.8% of farms were registered in joint male and female names despite Central Statistics Office data showing up to a quarter of the work done on farms is fully or in part by women. Food for Thought!!! POTENTIAL TAMS LAND PURCHASE GRANT FOR YOUNG FARMERS The possibility of a financial support package for young farmers in the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to assist in the purchase of land, has been highlighted by the vice president of the European Council of Young Farmers (CEJA), Thomas Duffy. Don’t get over excited, as this
is a proclamation by a voluntary farm lobbyist body and not an EU Regulatory structure. It would be nice if such It has been suggested that there are two interesting changes proposed to TAMS [Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme] in the new CAP. At the moment, TAMS can only be secured for equipment. It’s not available on land. But now, it will potentially become available for land – if the Irish government decides to include supports for young farmers to purchase land. Therefore, support could be provided for farmers to buy land assuming one of the two criteria are met: •
A qualified young farmer is buying the land;
• The land is being bought by a farmer (young or old) for environmental purposes. Contact Louis Murchan Tel: 087-2857938 (B Ag Sc,Dip EIA Mgmt) Agricultural & Environmental Advisor

A good gratin always has a place on the table and especially this time of the year as the evenings are getting a little shorter and darker. This recipe is a variation of the popular potato and garlic gratin. In this, I have added leek and bacon to give it a little more body. This will work as a main meal or can be served as a side. Hope you love it. Ingredients 2 leek, washed and halved lengthways 15g butter

salt and pepper rapeseed oil Method Preheat the oven to 180ºC. Heat a medium sized pot over medium heat and add a little oil. Add the leek and a pinch of salt. Allow to cook gently for about three minutes. Add the butter, bacon, garlic and thyme and continue to cook for a further five minutes. Add the milk and cream to the pot and once it comes to a gentle boil turn it down to a simmer and cook this for about ten minutes. At this stage the liquid will have thickened slightly. Strain the liquid into a bowl. In a rectangular ovenproof dish measuring about 23cm x 18cm and 6cm high, grease the bottom with some butter. Put some of the leek and bacon into the dish. Spread them to make a thin even layer. Season well with salt and pepper. Add a nice even layer of potatoes and pour some of the strained cream and milk mixture over it. Continue to layer this until all the ingredients are gone. Cover this with foil and place it in the oven. Leave it covered for about one hour. Remove this from the oven and remove the foil. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top. Put this back in the oven uncovered for about 15 minutes.

Mile búiochas do gach duine for playing Milltown/Castlemaine Clubs Fortnightly Field Development Project: A sincere thank you involved in last week's pouring of concrete to finish off the terraced steps, the floor of the dugouts and many more finishing touches around the field. A huge thank you to each and everyone that helped over the past month with the three separate concrete pours, many hands make light work. A sincere thank you to Field Development Chairperson Emmett Spring for coordinating these evenings and the huge activity that has seen our new facilities take shape of late. A big thank you to Ian Twiss also for his tireless work throughout this and many other aspects of the field development project. Thank you also to David O’Conner, Kieran and
It was more of the same for the second half and there was little to separate either side with scores being exchanged at either end and goal chances aplenty. Keel did start the half again the stronger and opened up a 0-10 to 1-05 lead but Jamie O'Shea kept the away side in touch and seen us go into the final water break holding a two point lead at 1-09 to 0-10. It was to be the hosts who rallied however in the final quarter and a Lachlan Griffin goal was the main difference after a scramble on the 14 yard line whereby a number of players tried unsuccessfully to pick the ball up, it landed with Griffin and he made no mistake. Further points from Eoghan O'Connor, Luke Flynn stretched the lead to three and in the final act of the game, Cian Flynn tapped over to leave the margin at four points when all was said and done. Both sides were guilty of missing some great goalscoring opportunities in the second half, however the away side will probably rue the missed chances a bit more as they all came when they were ahead around the midway stage of the half. It wasn't to be however tonight but the effort couldn't be faulted. Congrats to Keel and we wish them the very best as the tournament progresses. Hard luck to our lads on the evening who put in a great effort all through the contest. It was great to see 19 players togged out and plenty of game time for everyone.
Our Senior 'C' side went down by four points in an entertaining game of football played in lovely conditions. The field was looking very well by Keel so full credit on that front! After a lively start by the hosts, they opened up a 0-3 to 0-0 lead after 5 minutes with points from Darragh O'Dowd (0-2) and Dylan Prendergast (0-1). Gradually our lads settled into the contest and by the first water break had edged in front on a score of 1-3 to 0-3 with the green flag being raised by Jamie O'Shea after a wonderful pass from Gavin O'Brien. Keel had Ruairí Prendergast black carded and towards the end of the opening half Milltown/ Castlemaine had Patrick O'Connor black carded but really it was a very clean and open game of football. Padraig O'Brien was introduced for the away side at the water break and his introduction seen him land two super scores, kicking over his shoulder on the half turn each time. Keel used the extra man to their advantage towards the end of the half and a few scores from Killian

West Kerry GAA Breandán Fitzgerald All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Semi-Final : Kerry 0-22 to Tyrone 3-14 Tough luck to Peter Keane and his Kerry Senior Football Team who were defeated by Tyrone in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Semi-Final in Croke Park last Saturday 28th August, Kerry 0-22 to Tyrone 3-14. Defeat is never easy and the only thing to do is thank all our players and management for giving us so much enjoyment throughout the year. Especially the West Kerry contingent of An Ghaeltacht’s Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Dingle’s Tom O’Sullivan and Paul Geaney. Keep the heads up lads, a lot of football to be played yet! Lee Strand West Kerry League Final 2021 Dingle 1-21 to 1-8 An Ghaeltacht Dingle claimed the Lee Strand West Kerry League Title 2021 in Páirc an Ághasaigh with an impressive victory against An Ghaeltacht on Friday 20th August, Dingle 1-21 to 1-8 An Ghaeltacht. Fresh from their County League Division 1 win the home side were in no mood to relinquish their Lee Strand West Kerry League crown in 2021. The game got off to a slow start and An Ghaeltacht were dealt a big blow when they lost Roibeard Ó Sé after only a few minutes through injury. Seán
Ó Bambaire scored the game’s first score when he goaled for An Ghaeltacht on the 9th minute of play. Dingle responded with a Mikey Geaney point from a free kick and a Paul Devane point from play. Gearóid Jaicí Mac Gearailt pointed from a free kick for An Ghaeltacht but this was met with a Tadhg Browne goal for Dingle to put them ahead by a point. Another Mikey Geaney point from a free kick, was quickly followed by a Dylan Geaney point from play. With 15 minutes played in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final of 2021 the score was Dingle 1-4 to 1-1 An Ghaeltacht. Tomás Ó Sé kicked a fine point from play for An Ghaeltacht but Dingle responded with a Barry O’Sullivan point from play and a Gavin H Curran point from a free kick. Another Gearóid Jaicí Mac Gearailt point from a free kick for An Ghaeltacht was closely followed by a Tadhg Browne point from play for Dingle. Dingle with points from Barry O’Sullivan and Mikey Geaney extended their lead to six, before An Ghaeltacht lost Gearóid Mac an tSaor through injury. Matthew Flaherty kicked a point from play for Dingle and when Referee Billy O’Shea blew the half time whistle the score in Páirc an Ághasaigh in the Lee Strand West Kerry League Final of 2021 was Dingle 1-10 to 1-3 An Ghaeltacht. If Dingle were slow to begin the game, Manager Pádraig Corcoran must have given them a right proper half time team talk as they began the second half in whirlwind fashion. A George Durrant point from play began the restart and this was followed by three great points from play from Man of the Match, Dylan Geaney from left and right. A Gearóid Jaicí Mac Gearailt point from
The victorious Dingle team

Ó Chorrán Tuathail go Cruach Chéinia! Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh Baineadh siar asam i mí Feabhra le linn dom adhmholadh/eulogy a léamh san Irish Times fé dhreapadóir a fuair bás i ndeireadh Eanáir na bliana seo 500 méadar ó bharra Mount Kenya.1 Chuir an t-alt úd i gcuimhne dhom an iarracht a dheineas fhéin barra Chruach Chéinia a bhaint amach Meitheamh 2007. Seo mar a tharla. Chun scéal cuíosach fada a chiorrú, bhí Liam, an té is sinne dár gclann, a bhí i mbun iarchéime, ag déanamh taighde le déagóirí i bplódcheantar Kangemi, agus thug cuireadh dom dul ina theannta go Nairobi, príomhchathair Chéinia mar a bheadh sé lonnaithe. Thógfadh a chuid oibre sa tsráid trí seachtainí. Chaitheas seachtain ag cur aithne ar an bpríomhchathair, agus ar cheantar Kangemi, is an mhuintir gheanúil a raibh Liam i bpáirt leo ina thaighde. I measc go leor eile, bhí de phríbhléid agam Aifreann beannaithe Domhnaigh a cheiliúradh go ceolmhar le pobal dílis Dé an bhruachbhaile úd de dhaonra 100,000, Aifreann a bhí le tosnú ar 11.00a.m. ach nár thosnaigh go 11.30a.m. toisc nár chríochnaigh aifreann 9.00a.m. go dtí 11.15! Thug Mwai Kibaki, Uachtarán na tíre, aitheasc uaidh tar éis an aifrinn, is é a tiargáil don toghchán uachtarántachta a bhí le teacht ag deireadh na bliana. Pé scéal é, tar éis seachtaine i bhfochair Liam, agus chun a spás fhéin a thabhairt dó, bheartaíos bualadh isteach fén dtír chun iontais na hAifrice a bhlaiseadh dom fhéin. Ar an gcéad bhuille, thughas fé safari seachtaine – ach tar éis trí lá bhíos dóthanach de, agus shantaíos taiscéalaíocht/ adventure níos dúshlánaí. Cad fé thuras a tabhairt ar an Maasai Mara. Dheineas amhlaidh, agus fuaireas blaiseadh de dhomhan dúchasach na hAifrice – alt do lá eile, b’fhéidir! Tar éis dom roinnt laethanta a chaitheamh i measc na mbundúchasach, bhí fonn taistil arís orm, agus fiú teaspach do thuilleadh eachtraíochta um an dtaca seo! Cad fé Chruach Chéinia a dhreapadh! Bhí Corrán Tuathail (1038m) dreaptha cúpla babhta agam, ach dúshlán eile ar fad tabhairt fén tara sliabh is airde san Aifric, a bhí breis is ceithre huaire níos airde ná’n Corrán ag 5199m. Sea, thabharfainn fé! Gheobhainn marcaíocht ar mhatatu an cúpla céad ciliméadar ón Maasai Mara go baile Nanyuki in abhantrach an tsléibhe mhóir, agus chuirfinn mé féin i bhfearas don dreapadh ansúd. Bhreacas nótaí fánacha taistil ó lá go lá, agus léim ann go dtugamair cuaird ar ár slí ar thearmann lasairéan/flamingo, Loch Nakuru: Ar bhruacha pinc Nakuru le mochmhaidine gile, beobhrat flamingoch! Ar an mbóthar go Nanyuki bhuail meánchiorcail an domhain linn. Sceitimíní orm bheith ar lár an domhain ag féachaint ar dhuilleoga i mbáisín uisce ag casadh deiseal sa leathsféar theas, agus ag iompó tuathall leathmhéadar ó thuaidh den mheánlíne – míorúilt eolaíoch! D’fhanas thar oíche i Nanyuki tar éis dom treoraí, Joseph Waithaka, a thabhairt ar bord chun mé a thionlacadh ar mo dhreapadh. Thabharfadh Joseph bia is fearas cócaireachta is éide dreapadóireachta leis, agus bhuailfimis ag busáras an bhaile an lá dár gcionn. Bus go Geataí Shirimon ar thearmainn an tsléibhe linn ansan. Tar éis lóin, bheadh dreapadh trí uair a chloig romhainn go Campa OldMoses ag 3000 méadar os cionn na farraige. Seo a leanas blaiseadh dá bhreacas. Satharn, 30/6/’07, 9.00 i.n. Mé á scríobh so fé lagsholas an champa, é dorcha óna 7.00. D’aithneofá go maith a bheith go h-ard os cionn na farraige – an t-aer éadrom! Lánré anocht, ’gus beanna maorga Chruach Chéinia ag bagairt a gcinn go draíochtúil thar dhroim a chéile! Rith an ráis go dtí seo linn, a bhuí le ‘Ngai’ cruthathóir an domhain de réir mhiotaseolaíocht Mhaasai! Nua gach radharc ’gus hakuno-matata 2 gach coiscéim is comhrá ! Subs: Shane O’Neill for S Walsh (half time); Danny Shea for Finbar Casey (45th minute); Emmet Casey for S O’Sullivan (50th minute); Liam Joy for M Houlihan (55th minute); Eamon O’Connor for Cathal Crosby (58th minute). Next up for Cromane is the first group game of this year’s County Novice Football Championship Final against Asdee. The game takes place in Ballymac on Sunday, September 5, at 2.30pm. MINORS: Minor County League Division 7 final result: Glenbeigh-Glencar/ Cromane (GGC) 5-6, Churchill 3-19 A strong second-half display from Churchill meant the GGC minors were on the losing side in last Monday week’s County League final in Milltown. The GGC lads started well and led by 2-2 to 1-2 at the first water break thanks to two Jack McGrath goals. Churchill though slowly got to grips with the game and led by three at the break, 3-3 to 3-6 (Jason O’Connor bravely punching home the third GGC goal). Churchill restarted the better and opened up a six-point lead early in the second half. The GGC lads kept battling and a fourth goal, this time from Tony Óg Duffy had them within 5 at the second-half water break, 4-4 to 3-12.
Cromane 2-18, Ballyduff 1-8
Churchill composed themselves and rattled off a series of fine scores before a late Jason O’Connor penalty (after he was fouled) left the final score: GGC 5-6, Churchill 3-19.
Cromane claimed the final promotion place to Division 4 of next year’s county league with a commanding display at Austin Stack Park, Tralee.
Scorers: Jason O’Connor 2-5, Jack McGrath 2-0, Tony Óg Duffy 1-0, Fionn O’Sullivan 0-1.
A stunning second-half performance, when they outscored their opponents by 2-9 to 0-3, sealed the deal. Cromane have rarely played at this prestigious Kerry venue but it was our second win in a row here after our 2007 Novice final win over Ballydonoghue (0-11 to 2-3).
Team: Jamie Casey; Daniel O'Sullivan, Tony Óg Duffy, Cian Lyons; Joshua O'Sullivan, Noah Falvey, Keilan O’Sullivan; Conor Hayes, Fionn O’Sullivan; Darragh Crosby, Jack McGrath, Keith Moriarty; Jamie O'Sullivan, Jason O'Connor, Brian Cahill. Subs: Liam Hayes, Seamus Moriarty.
Cromane kicked the first point of the game, from Darren Houlihan, but Ballyduff responded with a cracking goal. After this, it was a cagey affair with Cromane handling more ball but Ballyduff being the more patient side. By the first half water break, Cromane had edged in front, 0-6 to 1-2, thanks to points from Barry Flanagan (2), Darren Houlihan (2), and Donnchadh Walsh.
Death: MARY TEAHAN née FORD, TEAHAN'S BAR, CROMANE, KILLORGLIN, formerly of Moorehall, Ballyglass, Co. Mayo and Inchigeelagh, Co. Cork. Peacefully, on August 22nd 2021, at the Palliative Care Unit, University Hospital Kerry surrounded by her loving family. Predeceased by her beloved husband Denis, son Denis Junior and parents Margaret & James Ford.
Ballyduff got their noses back in front by the 20th minute but a fine Mikey Houlihan score levelled matters with five minutes left in the half, 0-7 to 1-4. A minute later Cromane went ahead with Donnchadh Walsh applying the finishing touches after he did most of the approach work. It was a lead that Cromane did not relinquish for the rest of the game. At the break, there was just one between the sides, 0-9 to 1-5 in Cromane’s favour but on the resumption, they proceeded to break Ballyduff’s resistance. A quickfire point, within seconds of the throw-in, from Darragh McKeefry, set the tone and Cromane went on to play their best half of football for the year.
Sadly missed by her loving sons & daughters; Denise, Dermot, Kenneth, Gerard & Angela (Susie). Deeply regretted by her sons-in-law Austin & Brian, daughters-in-law MaryAnne, Mary & Niamh, Ger's partner Sínead and her daughter Ella, grandchildren; Darragh, Michael, John, Maria, Trisha, James, Calvin, Caolim & Donnchadh, great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours & friends.
SENIORS: County League Division 5 promotion playoff:
In a ten-minute passage from the 35th minute until the second half water break, Cromane hit 2-4 without reply. The chief architect of this scoring spree was corner forward Barry Flanagan who hit 1-3 from play in this period. Cromane’s other goal came when a Flanagan shot was parried by the Ballyduff keeper into the path of the inrushing Shane O’Neill. By the second half water break, Cromane led by 2-14 to 1-6. While the forwards get the headlines our backline restricted their opponents to just 0-3 in the second half with goalkeeper Sean Teahan, backs Conor Sugrue, John Michael Foley, Brice Dourieu, Eanna Healy, Brendan Foley, and Cathal Crosby all playing key roles. Around the middle Sean O’Sullivan (controlled matters in the first half) before Darren and Donnchadh began to dominate and also have an impact on the scoreboard. From here on in it was plain sailing for Cromane with points from Flanagan, two from Emmet Casey and another from Darragh McKeefry sealing a 2-18 to 1-8 win. Well done to our Cromane men on getting promoted to Division 4 and thanks also to their management team of Alan O’Neill, Paudie McCarthy, and Matt Colborne. Scorers: Barry Flanagan 1-5, Darren Houlihan 0-5, Shane O'Neill 1-0, Donnchadh Walsh, Emmet Casey, Darragh McKeefry 0-2 each, Mikey 30 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

What Are You Drinking With That?
Paella We’re travelling (in our minds, at least) to Spain and exploring the traditional Spanish dish of Paella. Originally from the Valencia region, Paella is a rice dish which can have chicken, game, sausages, seafood, and vegetables, along with bold spices, in particular saffron. It is traditionally made in one pan, so the melded flavours end up being amazing! Paella recipes are versatile, so what you drink with it may change depending on the ingredients. To return to our well-worn motto, which you all probably know by now, it’s best to ‘match like with like’. So, when thinking about Paella, it makes sense look at Spanish wines first. A Rioja is perfect, especially if the Paella has meat as well as shellfish in it. Equally, if the Paella is seafood paella, a white Rioja would be a fantastic choice. Another option in the area of white wine is a white Chateauneuf-du-Pape, a big, rounded wine that would also stand up to the spices and flavours of a paella. These white wines are typically bigger in body and tend to be lightly oaked, making them nice food wines.
Other good options for wine include a young, fruity red wine. Think Cru Beaujolais or even Beaujolais Villages. These are lighter reds that won’t overpour the flavours of the dish but will also have a touch of acidity to compliment the richer elements of the dish, like seafood. You can serve these wines slightly chilled for a thoroughly enjoyable experience! For something truly different, serve a well-chilled Manzanilla or Fino sherry – they’re sure to be a crowd pleaser! While they are sweet wines, they have high levels of acidity making them a perfect accompaniment to food. Also, we’ve been told that a glass of Fino before the meal will kick in everyone’s appetite, so get your guests good and hungry before they take a seat at the table and they’re sure to be even more impressed with the dish! As is said in Irish – ‘Is maith an t-anlann an t-ocras!’ (Hunger is the best of sauces). Paella is a really fun dish to explore different drinks pairings with. Because of the array of flavours and all the variations of the dish, there are many options to choose from. If wine isn’t your thing try a cool, sweet mojito. This is a great palate cleanser that will compliment the rich flavours of the paella. It’s also handy in the sense that it can be made virgin to suit those that don’t drink. A big jug of Sangria (wine, fruit, and brandy) would be a hit as well. Red wine, fruit juice, soda water…each of these combine to create a delicious refreshing drink to enjoy alongside your paella. Of course, we can’t forget a sparkling bottle of Cava! Whether over a beach fire or on the hop, paella is a great Spanish-themed dinner party and there are near endless drink options to explore. Paella is not limited to any one recipe, so have fun adding and omitting different elements and exploring the different drinks along with it! As always, please drink responsibly and never – EVER – drink and drive. Sláinte mhaith duit fhéin agus dod’ chlann. Cheers! West Kerry Live 31

Sustainable Innovation Project on the Dingle Peninsula We got a great response to our callout for farmers to participate in the Sustainable Innovation Project to test on-farm sensor technology. As part of an EU Horizon 2020 funded project, Dingle Hub together with Teagasc, Kerry Agribusiness, Net Feasa and the IFA are working together on this initiative to address and achieve early progress in hitting environmental/ climate change targets; at the same time creating more profitable and sustainable farming systems through the introduction and use of sensor technology. Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland What a ‘fast and furious’ summer it has been……. Staycations with just a mix of international visitors returning in August……. it was terrific to welcome them back to the peninsula. Let us hope the autumn brings a softer pace as businesses and their staff recover from the hectic months of July and August – the pressure they have been under with so few staff, keeping visitors safe and welcome under such circumstances. Fair play to all…. September always brings a more relaxed pace but let’s not forget all the water and land-based activities still to enjoy – eco tours and boat trips in the harbour, out on the bay, on and around the islands; kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, winging (newest buzz over on the Maharees, windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing……. For land lubbers – horse riding, links golf, cycling, walking tours and trails – explore the Dingle Way for yourself…. Wellness treats with new centres and experiences recently opened (Best of luck to all), foodie tours, aquarium, arts and crafts, archaeology, family farms and attractions……. Never mind the great shopping! Let’s give the autumn a boost by getting active and enjoying all our great experiences on our doorstep! Tourism and Community Updates: The Big E 2021 – September 17th to October 3rd The Dingle Peninsula will once again have an Exhibit at The Big E this autumn. While for the most part it will be a ‘virtual’ exhibit, it will represent the Dingle Peninsula with wonderful imagery, the Dingle Peninsula destination brochures and some local craft and gift businesses who would usually attend. While many of our regular Exhibitors cannot be there in person this year due to travel restrictions to the US, it is terrific that Brian de Staic Jewellers will have a team there in person. Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance would like to thank The Big E - Gene Cassidy, Tim Garstka, Noreen Tassinari and all the team for their support in making this happen and ensuring the Dingle Peninsula has yet again, a promotional presence in West Springfield and greater Springfield region. This will be of enormous support as we look to the 2022 season and to welcoming back our New England family and friends.
For members of Comhaontas Turasóireachta Chorca Dhuibhne/ Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance, please send your Autumn 2021 and Spring 2022 offers in to Sam at dinglept@gmail.com and they will be promoted at The Big E through https:// www.dingle-peninsula.ie/packages.html Make the most of getting out and about without the car this autumn! Local Link Services Dingle Peninsula / Corca Dhuibhne – keep the car at home and use our local service across the peninsula. What a fantastic way to get about visiting the villages, dining out and enjoying the pubs – a great way to explore, discover and enjoy leaving the car parked! Hut at the Edge of the Village John Moriarty curtha in eagar ag
Martin Shaw ‘A Hut at the Edge of the Village presents a collection of Moriarty’s writings ordered thematically, with sections ranging from place, love and wildness through to voyaging, ceremony and the legitimacy of sorrow. These carefully chosen extracts are supported by an introduction by Martin Shaw and foreword by Tommy Tiernan, a long-time admirer of Moriarty’s work. According to Shaw, ’These are not pastoral times we are living in, but prophetic. We are at a moment when the world as we understand it has been turned upside down. The challenge is that there are fewer and fewer people who can interpret such happenings in a deep, soulful way. Moriarty can do that. When culture is in woeful crisis, the insights never come from parliament, senate, or committee; they come from the hut at the edge of the village. Let’s go there. There is tremendous, unexpected hope waiting.’ - Lilliput

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Cad in ainm an domhain a bhuail Ciarraí ar an nDomhnach seo caite? D’imir Tír Eoin cleasa ortha arís. Más fíor ní raibh aon lorg fágtha ar imreoirí Thír Eoin ag an víoras agus bhí trí chluiche i ndiaidh a chéile acu ní ró-fhada ó shoin. Sa am céanna ní raibh aon chluiche ag Ciarraí le ceathair nó cúig do sheachtainí. Thug Ciarraí seachtain breise do Thír Eoin agus chuir seachtain eile leis an easpa cluichí ortha féin. Nílim á rá gur imir Ciarraí go holc ach bhí mearbhall ortha. Dá mbuailfidís an chaid thamall amach nuair a bheidís i dtreo an bháide, níorbh é sin a dheineadar ach rith isteach sna cosantóirí a thug bascadh dóibh. Sna tosaigh ní raibh ach beirt Seán Ó Sé agus Dáithí Clifford gur bhfiú trácht órtha. Bhí lár an ghoirt maith go leor gur imigh Ó Móráin. D’imir Jason Foley go maith agus bhí Tomás agus Brian maith go leor. Ag iarraidh báidí a fháil ceann dos na fáthanna a chaill Chiarraí. Gortaíodh Dáithí Clifford agus murach san ainneoin gach maisle bheadh an lá le Ciarraí. An iomarca peasála agus iad don dtuairim ná beadh aon dua acu. Má tá mallacht ar Mhaigh Eo le seachtó bliain, gach seans go scaoilfear í i mbliana. Mar a dúirt coicíos ó shoin níl aon teora leis an mioscais a bhaineann le Tír Eoin más fíor. Tá trua agam do imreoirí Chiarraí. Má leanann an tranglam a bhaineann le iompar na caide ní bheidh scata ag imirt peile. Leath mharú a bhíonn i ndán don nduine go bhfuil an chaid aige. Cluiche gan chrích b’ea an chluiche dé Domhnaigh agus mura mbeadh go raibh an- mheas agam ar fhoireann Chiarraí ní raghainn faid mo choise ag feachaint, ná ag éisteacht le cluiche mar sin. Dá ndéarfaí leis na tosaigh tabhairt fé phoinnte seachas rith isteach mar a raibh greadadh le fáil acu. Beidh lá eile acu,
Amhránaí ar Lár Tá Séamus Ó Maoileoin, na nAmhrán, ó Chamdhíneoil scioptha uainn ag an mbás. Fear socair ná raibh a shláinte ró mhaith le tamaillín. Is mó amhrán a chas sé go binn ar a shocracht i rith na mblianta. Ní raibh aon ghaisce ná baois ag baint le Séamus. Feirmeoir b’ea é a bhí go maith ar a chéird. Bhí sé fáiltiúil cneasta le aon duine a tháinig ‘an doras. Is méala mór a bhás dá chéile Máire agus a cheathrar iníon, Máiréad, Cristín, Eibhlín, agus Fionnuala. Fuair deartháir dó, Seáinín bás ní ró-fhada ó shoin. Solas na bhFlaitheas ag a anam caoin cneasta.

Bhíomair ar scoil an Daingin le chéile tamall. Gan amhras bhí gaol agam leis agus is mó oíche a bhíomair ag seinnt ár mboscaí ceoil le chéile. Ó thaobh caide dhó ní fheaca aon mhionúr riamh chomh maith leis. Sin í an fhírinne glan. Ar scoil an uair sin sa ranganna céanna bhí Mícheál Ó Glíosáin,Tomás, Liam Ó hUigín, Parthalán Ó Loinsigh agus mé féin. D’eagraiodh an Bráthair de Róiste comórtas idir cheithre fhoireann, ceann ag Tomás, Liam Ó hUigín, Parthalán Ó Loinsigh agus mé féin. Bhí Mícheál ar fhoireann Liam. Dar liom go raibh Tomás chomh maith leis an gceathrar againn. Chaith sé blianta ag obair don Roinn Talamhaíochta- níor chuaigh sé amach riamh le feirmeoir bocht a dhí-cháiliú i gcás pé airgead a bheadh ag dul chuige.Thabharfadh sé dea-chomhairle. Ní chuala riamh aon duine ag tromaíocht air. Conas nár chuaigh sé ar aghaidh dtí sinsir Chiarraí? Ní raibh aon fhonn air mar bhí post aige agus bhí sé sásta. Ar scoil bhí sé lán do chleachta. Bhíodh cairt aige agus aon uair go mbeadh sneachta ann théadh sé suas go lár na Conrach agus bhíodh ag sleamhnú na cairte síos. Bhíodh scata ag iarraidh bheith ar bord. Ní buaileadh an claí riamh. Sólás na bhFlaitheas ag do chaoin anam a Thomáis agus cóbhrón led chéile Rosanne, do mhuintir, gaolta agus cáirde. Laoch luacháireach ar lár. Nioclás Fuair cara dhom, Nioclás Ó Conchúir ó Mhám ‘n Óraigh bás an tseachtain seo caite. Fuair a chéile Máirín bás tamall ó shin agus mac Nioclás óg. Maireann ceathrar iníon, Eibhlís, Louise, Rebecca agus Rosalyn. Ceárdaí bád b’ea Nioclás agus bhreá leis iasc go mór mhór maicreíl an Fhomhair. Bhí sé féin, Seán Ó Bambaire, trócaire air agus mé féin i mbun feachtais aimsir ceadú bheith páirteach sa mhargadh Eorpach. Deirim-se cleachta leat! Is mó céad don nuachtan Poblachtánach An tÉireannach Aontaithe a dhíol sé. Bhíodh an-chleachta againn. D’áitigh sé ar bhall don nGarda Siochána cóip don nuachtán a cheannach, rud a déarfainn ná féadfadh aon duine eile a dhéanamh. Ghoill bás a mhic Nioclás Óg i dtaisme tráchta go mór air agus bás a chéile Máirín. Tá fáilte cháirdiúil roimhis ag Geata na bhFaitheas mar a bhfuil Peadar ag cur na múrtha fáilte roimh a anam cleachtúil.
