Dingle Notes Richie Williams RETIREMENTS. Three very popular people have retired from their respective professions here in Dingle recently. Sergeant Martin Allen has been in charge of the West Kerry District for the past few years and his no nonsense approach has ensured we all live in a safe part of the country. Noreen O'Sullivan leaves Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne behind with many happy memories after ensuring all her pupils past and present got every opportunity to reach their desired goals in life.

Handmade Candles • Soap • Pottery • Perfume Home Fragra11ces • Jewellery • Irish Wool

Mary O'Connor leaves her classroom in Bunscoil An Chlochair also with very happy memories but especially following the successful careers of her former students who now spread around almost every corner of the world. We wish Martin, Noreen and Mary many years of a very healthy and happy retirement. CINEMA CLOSURE. The breaking news over the past week that the Phoenix Cinema in Dykegate Street is closing was greeted with shock not throughout the town but far beyond as well. The Phoenix was one of the last few independent cinemas operating in the western world today but ever developing technology and more recently the Covid pandemic makes small outlets unviable to survive in business long term. Radio na Gaeltachta broadcast some really nice tributes to the O'Sullivan Family who operated the cinema since 1978 and opened a discussion as to converting the premises to a theatre for which it is already structurally set up. It’s up to interested parties now to get the ball rolling as the town could well do with such a facility. EVENTS. Feile Liteartha Chorca Dhuibhne was a tremendous success and what an achievement to get Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D. Higgins to visit the Peninsula over the weekend. The 20th annual Other Voices Weekend runs from Friday 26th to Sunday 28th with tickets for every event in short supply as always. Pre recording of the supplementary activities have been taking place over the past few weeks resulting in a great financial bonus for many business outlets in the area.

We are a small local producer of handmade natural scented candles, perfumes and home fragrances.

Due to Covid guidelines the Féile na Soilse Lantern Parade will not take place this year. The third annual West Kerry Tractor Run is scheduled for this Sunday 28th starting at midday from Lispole Pet Farm and passing through Dingle on the usual trip west over Milltown Bridge. Motorists can expect some delays around that time on Sunday. APPOINTMENTS. Congratulations to Breandan Fitzgerald MCC on his election to the Association of Irish Local Government national body. Local walking tour expert Kevin O'Shea is the ideal person to fill the new role of Tourism Development Officer for West Kerry working with the Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance and the Dingle Way Committee.

CONCERT. Tickets for the Pa Sheehy headline concert in the INEC in Killarney on December 11th will be in short supply so his fans are advised to book early and avoid disappointment. Good luck Pa and thanks for keeping Dingle prominently on the Music Map. CLIMATE CONFERENCE. Well done to the Dingle Peninsula 2030 Group who made it all the way to Glasgow for the Conference in an Electric Car and arrived home safely proving that electric transport is possible even for long journeys. COLLECTIONS. Congratulations to the pupils, parents and teachers of Scoil Iognáid Rís who organised an unwanted clothes collection and raised money through the Cash for Clobber project for their school projects. Well done also to the pupils, teachers and parents of Scoil an Ghleanna who for the past 10 years have donated festive cheer to needy children in Africa and Eastern Europe. All the pupils collected shoeboxes full of gifts for transport through Team Hope Shoebox Appeal International Charity to poverty stricken countries. TIDY. TOWNS. Judges in the National Competition awarded us 2 extra marks this year. We outlined our dissatisfaction with the competition going ahead at all due to the dangers of spreading the Covid virus but entered to keep Dingle on the map. Much more involvement from the entire community will be required if we are to challenge for any kind of good reports in future years. SLÁN TAMALL!!!

What Are You Drinking With That? Talking Turkey end of November. This simple and fruity, light and friendly wine is a great accompaniment to turkey. You’ve read from us before that we think of turkey as two different birds because of the difference between white and dark meat (taste and cooking time/methods). Well, Beaujolais Nouveau goes well with ‘both birds’! For those who have experienced the American Thanksgiving holiday, you may have had a California Zinfandel with that turkey feast. It’s a favourite of ours, for sure. Zinfandel (the red, not the blush “White Zin”) is a big and bold wine which can stand up to a good turkey dinner. The same grape from a different land may be more familiar in our local shops as Primitivo, from Italy. The Italians treat the grape differently – from viticulture to viniculture – than our American cousins but this wine is a nice choice as well. ‘Tis the season… well, at least it’s the season for getting ready for the season. Other Voices are in town, half-price turkey tokens are being collected, and last week’s frosty mornings brought the whole thing home. Christmas dinner is nigh! So, what to serve with that big bird? Funny you should ask. We’ve some ideas. It just so happens that one of the first wines of the season, Beaujolais Nouveau, is released (with great fanfare in many parts of the world) at the 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

We’ve only touched the red wine selections which compliment turkey. Pinot Noir (especially from the new world), a lighter Shiraz/Syrah (again, same grape, different countries), or a soft merlot are also nice red wine choices. For whites, that big bird is going to need a juicy pall that won’t pale. Gewürztraminer, Riesling, Vouvray fit that bill. A New World (particularly California) Chardonnay can be a lovey accompaniment to turkey. Just make sure that it has seen as little oak aging as possible.

Apple beverages are a natural with your Tom or Hen. A sparkling Pressé or cloudy apple mixed with sparkling water can be refreshing plus, the sweetness and acidity of apple is back-of-thenet when it comes to pairing. The same could be said of cranberry juice, but that one should be cut at least 2:1 with sparkling water or else you mayn’t taste the dinner. Ah, and then the other sparklers. Champagnes, Cava, Prosecco, even sparkling red Shiraz are the perfect festive beverage. Do remember, however, that there is likely a good bit of salt in the dishes around your turkey. Brut Champagne and other very dry sparkling wines may be overwhelmed by that. If bubbles are your choice for the bird, make sure there is a little bit of residual sugar (you can usually tell by a slightly lower alcohol level than the drier stuff. That, or ask your friendly wine attendant). We’ll have more to offer about sparkling wines in the run-up to the Christmas. In the meantime, you’ve a list of ideas to keep with you as you poke around the shops. Please, always drink responsibly and never – EVER – drive after drinking. Sláinte mhaith duit fhéin agus dod' chlann. Cheers

Finding the Perfect Date! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

No sooner than we realise that all that sugar has been damaging our health, we instinctively seek a healthier alternative. A wise move indeed but the marketeers are out there too, ready to pounce with the next best thing! Dates are just one of the many sugar substitutes lauded as a “healthy, guilt-free” treat that can take the edge off sugar cravings without any repercussions, or so we are told! Being an exotic, sweettasting delight, we readily accept what the food industry tells us about dates but let’s have a look at some of facts about them and then, like any good date, weigh up the pros and cons! Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree (Phoenix Dactylifera), native to northern Africa and parts of the Middle East. Once known as Mesopotamia, this fertile region surrounds the Tigris- Euphrates river system. In modern days roughly corresponding to most of Iraq, Kuwait, eastern parts of Syria, South-eastTurkey and regions along the Turkish-Syrian and Iran-Iraq borders. There is evidence of date cultivation as a food source as far back as 6000 BC and fossil records show that date palm tree existed 50 billion years ago. In religious and cultural traditions of these areas, dates feature highly in ceremonial rites, healing and a symbol of prosperity and triumph while also being a food staple for the regular folk throughout history and right up to today! They are considered sent from Paradise in Muslim tradition with numerous mentions in the Qur’an (Koran). Dates along with yogurt or milk are the first foods consumed after the sun has set during the sacred month of Ramadan, when Muslims observe fasting from food and drink during daylight hours. The Christian bible has more than thirty references to date palm, most notably when its branches lined the streets of Jerusalem for Jesus, on Palm Sunday. In middle ages they became a status symbol among the wealthy aristocrats across Europe, who often imitated food and fashion trends of their Arab counterparts. Nowadays, worldwide consumption of dates has risen in response to a move towards healthier foodstuffs. In food processing, using date syrup or date paste is not considered an “added sugar”, providing a more sale-able alternative to refined sugar and glucose syrups. Although dates are much more expensive than refined sweeteners, manufacturers can demand a premium price for their product when it is labelled with “sugar-free”, “natural” and “no-added sugar”. They are excellent binding agents in baking, provide a wholefood source of sweetness and their moisture can mimic butter, making dates an excellent choice for plantbased desserts. Compared to regular sugar, dates win the nutrition stakes, hands down. They contain fibre, antioxidants, polyphenols, B vitamins and minerals but beware of the hype, they are highly calorific and 70% of their composition comes from a combination of fructose and glucose (sugars). One medjool date provides 70 calories and 16g of sugar – and whoever stopped at just one? Like all good things in life, moderation is key! There are many varieties of dates ranging in colour, size and sweetness. In European trading circles, “common dates” is the term designated to any dates that are not Deglet Noor or Medjool, which are considered superior. Common dates are often mixed varieties and were most likely the dates 8 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

we Irish first encountered in Christmas pudding, sticky toffee pudding and even HP sauce. Aficionados of dates are more likely to choose the more expensive, luxurious varieties of Medjool and Deglet Noor, as they are sweeter, have a soft chewy texture and definitely posher! Most of the dates we import are dried and pitted although you can buy fresh dates in specialized stores. They are not as dehydrated as raisins or apricots, they still contain a fair bit of moisture, which is why you will find the best quality dates in a cool place or refrigerated. When buying dates look for vibrant, shiny colour from amber, to dark red to brown, depending on variety, stage of ripeness and age. They should be plump and soft. Avoid dates that are too sticky, hard or covered with crystallized sugar, which mean they are getting on in age, still edible but not as good as a younger date! Now is the time to squirrel away freshly harvested dates as they are in season from late September to January, with this year’s crop hitting our shelves from about now. Store in an airtight container in the fridge or freeze for up to 12 months. The best way to enjoy dates is with other wholefood ingredients, particularly proteins and healthy fats. While we are relatively new to the “dating” scene we can look to the East and learn from the experts who effortlessly maximize the health benefits and flavour of dates in their cooking. They usually pair them with nuts or fermented dairy foods for a sweet snack or bake them in breads. In savoury dishes you will find dates listed in recipes for tagines, Middle Eastern stews and rice salads, in which they complement meats, chickpeas, beans and vegetables. Now, you are up to date with dates, enjoy! Farming News Louis Murchan EXTENSION OF BDGP AND GLAS CONTRACTS FOR 2022 Farmers in BDGO and GLAS were offered an extra year in each scheme, through a (somewhat confusing and unexpected) text, last week. While most will avail of this additional year, others may not be able to avail of said extension, therefore the implied confusion. To extend one’s contract, an applicant can log into their agfood account and must be submitted by 5pm on 20th December 2021; or they can reply to a text received, but only within three days of receipt or dame. More confusion and additional stress! A confirmation text will issue in reply if the Department has successfully received a response. However, the reply must be exactly as indicated in text and there is no deviation from this. Also, some telephone service providers such as Tesco and An Post do not work, something that DAFM will have to sort out. Anyone considering BDGP must be sure that they really want to remain in the scheme for the rest of the year, as if they change their minds, midyear, they may be asked to pay all money back, received over the life of the scheme. Buyer Beware! Similarly, an extension to GLAS 1, 2 & 3 have been offered, by text, and acceptance can also be done by text of on-line through agfood.ie, on or before 10th December 2021. Why both didn’t have the same closing date, no one is really sure. An information pack was posted to participants on Wednesday, 10 November, conveying the offer to extend and the ways in which they may apply, and also providing current details of their GLAS contract and circulars summarising changes to the relevant Terms and Conditions, and Specifications. Farmers are advised to contact their advisor, if they have not already, but in all cases, advisors will put all their clients into the scheme, (or should), and if someone wishes to withdraw, this can be done in the New Year. While these extensions are welcome, some clarification seems to be necessary. There will be several thousand farmers who will not have an agri-environmental scheme, despite the demand for one. Many thousands of farmers who applied to join REAP, were simply refused entry, (7,000 out of 12,000 applicants) and those who did get in seemed to succeed on a “lottery-type” basis. The Government, especially The Green Party, and also many in the Opposition are calling for farmers to be more environmentally friendly, and more pro-active on Climate Change, yet there is no scheme for these thousands of willing farmers. Clarification is also needed on whether farmers who were GLAS 1,2 or 3 and were previously renting land but no longer are will still be eligible for the GLAS extension under their current home farm. It is a busy time of year. Many of our older farmers are not that “Techsavvy” . These cannot be expected to become Phone-whizzes, over-night. Any GLAS participant who has not replied by either method before the closing date of December 10, must be contacted again by the department prior to the closing date to ensure all GLAS participants have ample opportunity to extend their GLAS contacts. Let us hope that we are not all as smart as our brethren in Agriculture House. LIVER FLUKE FORECAST NOVEMBER 2021 Each year, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) in collaboration with Met Éireann, UCD, Teagasc and Animal Health Ireland advises farmers of the predicted risk of disease caused by liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) infection in livestock for that autumn and winter. This year’s forecast is based on meteorological data gathered between May and October 2021 by Met Éireann, as well as other sources, as outlined below. The Ollerenshaw Summer Index 2021 (used to assess the risk) indicates occasional losses with the exception of the west and northwest where a high prevalence of the disease is predicted. In contrast, little or no disease is anticipated in parts of the east. The low values for the summer index are due to the dry conditions that occurred generally in June and September 2021, and particularly in the east. Somewhat wetter weather conditions prevailed in the west and 12 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

north. The Risk is higher is the West, than in the East, due to wetter climatic conditions. Each year, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) in collaboration with Met Éireann, UCD, Teagasc and Animal Health Ireland advises farmers of the predicted risk of disease caused by liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) infection in livestock for that autumn and winter. This year’s forecast is based on meteorological data gathered between May and October 2021 by Met Éireann, as well as other sources, as outlined below. What about Rumen Fluke? The rumen fluke, Calicophoron daubneyi, which has become more prevalent in Ireland over the last number of years in both cattle and sheep, uses the same intermediate host as the liver fluke. The pathogenicity of rumen fluke is mainly due to the activity of the juvenile stages in the intestine, while the presence of adult flukes in the rumen is not associated with clinical signs. If clinical signs such as rapid weight loss or diarrhoea are seen, or if there is a history of previous disease from rumen fluke on the farm, livestock owners should consult with their PVP as to whether treatment for rumen fluke is required. The presence of rumen fluke eggs in faecal samples of animals that are thriving and producing well does not indicate that treatment for rumen fluke is warranted. GLYPHOSATE HERBICIDE AND BUMBLE BEES Glyphosate is the most commonly used herbicide in the world, and is widely used in agriculture. While glyphosate has been deemed 'beesafe' by regulators, some emerging evidence studies suggest that it has negative effects on bees. For that reason, discovering whether glyphosate alone, or in combination with other stressors, is detrimental to bee health, has become a question of great importance. A new study Royal Holloway University of London (RHUL) expands the current knowledge on glyphosate, by using several different research methods from the field of ecotoxicology. It observed that there was no significant effect on bee mortality when bees were exposed to glyphosate. In addition, no significant effect was observed for reproduction or sucrose consumption. The findings provide solid evidence that oral exposure to glyphosate does not cause mortality in bumble bees. Inconclusive evidence was found as to whether glyphosate made parasite infections more intense, but either way this is unlikely to be relevant at environmentally realistic concentrations. Because the research finds no effects of glyphosate, the parasite, or their combination on any measurement of health, the results do not indicate any requirement to change the regulatory status of the active ingredient glyphosate as it pertains to bumble bees. Despite the fact that the results find that glyphosate is unlikely to be harmful to bumble bees either alone, or alongside a common parasite, previous work found that it may have a negative impact on honey bees. For that reason, the authors of the article advise that further research on wild bee species and sublethal metrics would be useful to assist in resolving whether this widely used chemical is safe for bees.

West Kerry Tractor Run / Mórchuaird Tarracóra Chorca Dhuibhne Just a reminder that MÓRCHUAIRD TARRACÓRA CHORCA DHUIBHNE/ WEST KERRY TRACTOR RUN, is on track to roll out on SUNDAY 28th NOVEMBER from Dingle Eco Farm at 12 o clock sharp (registration begins at 11am). As always only roadworthy vehicles with third party fire & theft insurance will be permitted to take part. We would kindly ask all participants to follow the instructions of stewards and also to observe Covid-19 guidelines. There is a change to route this year (see map). The convoy will leave Lios Póil and pass through Dingle via the tracks and the quay. It will then travel back the long road to Baile na n-Áth, through Clochán Dubh to Muiríoch. From there it will pass Gort Caide Gallaras and Dingle Bay Rovers Soccer Pitch before turning right to Baile an Fhéirtearaigh. After going through the village, the tractor run will turn right down towards Baile Eaglaise and will follow the road to come up through Baile an Chaladh into Tiorabháin and back towards An Bhúailtín again. It will continue on before taking a right to Baile an Éanaigh and on towards Ceann Trá before returning back to Dingle. There will be a lead vehicle leading the convoy through the entire route so there is no fear of getting lost! There will volunteers carrying out a bucket

collection at various locations and we would be most grateful for any donations. The main beneficiary of this year’s tractor run is the very deserving patient comfort fund at West Kerry Community Hospital. Gáirdín Mhuire and the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association (ILFA) will be secondary beneficiaries. You can also donate via the Go Fund Me page and the Credit Union Account. Iarscolairí Scoil an Chlocháin a tháinig ar chuairt le dèanai le Corn Soisear an Chontae tar èis do Chaisleán Ghriaire lámh an uachtar a fháil ar Na Foidhrí

Féile an Phráta 2022 De bharr Covid 19, maraon le ana-chuid féilte eile, cuireadh Féile an Phráta i mBaile na nGall ar ceal i 2020 agus aríst i 2021. Trua mór é sin, mar bhí ana-shuim sa bhféile timpeall na bparóistí i gCorca Dhuibhne - creid nó ná creid, ghlac níosa mhó ná 110 garraíodóirí páirt sna comórtaisí i 2019. Ceiliúradh mór ab’ea é sa tsaol áitiúil, agus sa Ghaeluinn fhéinig. Tuigtear go bhfuil an tsuim i gcúrsaí an dúlra agus sa gharraíodóireacht dulta chun cinn go mór i rith tréimhse an Covid. Anois, tá triúr ó Bhaile na nGall tar éis teacht le chéile chun go tabharfaí faoi Fhéile 2022. Socraíodh go mbeadh John Sheehy ina Chathaoirleach shealadach; Eibhlín Ní Chearna ina Rúnaí / PR shealadach; agus Rochie Ó hUallacháin ina Chisteóir shealadach. Is léir go mbeidh gá le daoine breise, timpeall Mí na Márta is Mí Aibreáin seo chughainn. Aontaíodh an Fhéile a eagrú ar an nDomhnach, an 10ú Lá de Mhí Iúil 2022 agus aontaíodh go dtabharfar cuireadh do pharóistí an cheantair comórtaisí a chur ar bun as a stuaim féin agus ionadaí a chur go dtí an bpríomh-chomórtas. Tá an triúr ana-bhuíoch go bhfuil furmhór na h-oibre riaracháin déanta cheana fhéinig ag an gcoiste a bhunaigh an Fhéile an chéad lá - Aengus Ó Murchú, Elaine Lyne is Susan Ní Churnáin san áireamh, ach go h-áirithe. Tá an triúr buíoch comh maith don seisear urraitheoirí a thug tacaíocht thar na blianta, agus buíoch go bhfuil DPT sásta cabhair a thabhairt do chúrsaí riaracháin na Féile, mar a dhein siad cheana. In line with many other events in the region, Féile an Phráta had to be cancelled in 2020 and in 2021, because of the Covid 19 pandemic. This was quite a disappointment, as there was such an ever-growing interest in the parishes throughout the peninsula; it is hard to believe that over 110 gardeners competed 18 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

in the ‘spud off’ in 2019; the Sunday of the final competition again turned out to be a super fun day and a great celebration of our community and of our native language and heritage. Indeed, the last two years of lockdown has seen a further surge in this interest in all things nature, including real local food and gardening. Now, three brave souls from Baile na nGall (Eibhlín Ní Chearna, John Sheehy, Rochie Holohan) have come forward to approach the running of Féile 2022 – John as temporary Chairman, Eibhlín as temporary Rúnaí / PR and Rochie as temporary Cuisteoir. No doubt, much further help will be needed in March and April. The Féile has been agreed for Sunday 10 July 2022, the parishes will be invited to organise ‘semi finals’ and to send representatives forward to the Féile. The three volunteers are greatly appreciative that much of the preparatory work has already been completed by those previously involved, especially Aengus Murphy, Elaine Lyne and Susan Ní Chúrnáin. Also, the long-term support of the six sponsors is much appreciated, and Dingle A5 Peninsula Advert.pdf 2 Tourism 12/07/2018 15:17 have, thankfully, agreed to ‘lend a hand’, as they have done before.

Art Installation in Cogar Venue, Grey's Lane A group show with a focus on four local artists: Gerry Barry an artist based between Castlegregory and Cork City makes symmetrical, elemental land art. For Cogar, Barry brings leaves, dried bog dust, and lime into the Cogar space to make his elemental nests. Barry will also be creating a large drawing made of found clay. Ferg Flannery makes his second video piece for Cogar at Other Voices using coding and manipulation to form a sparkling, abstract seascape. Flannery also launches a series of West Kerry landscapes that could be the bleached deserts or red canyons of another planet. Emma Prendiville of Blank Slate has become a huge online success and brings a brand new splash of colour to Dunquin Pier alongside her popular Fear Marbh piece. Deirdre Mckenna brings her very special naomhóg into the Cogar space. Her bád beag has already been on tour to the Aran Islands and comes to Dingle via Galway to rest finally amongst her intensely crafted sea etchings. The naomhóg has been hand-knitted by the artist in an Aran knit and the craiceann has been tarred with bitumen. She believes it should be watertight on the ocean. Her next voyage perhaps.

father artist Gerry Barry, she responds visually and acoustically to the cinematic panoramas surrounding her. Here is her response to the artworks in the exhibition, to her father’s artworks and experimental sounds and Baroque on Viola. Súil Amháin rapper from Listowel launched his hip hop debut last year with producer Bantum and support from Cogar at Other Voices. He recently started touring with Kneecap and features in the Other Voices Presents trail 2021. Filmmaker Cormac Dunne recently took a trip down to a World War Two bunker in Tarbert to film Súil Amháin’s rap Viva Liobarnach coming out soon. Larry Beau is a songwriter and contemporary folk troubadour who spends his time writing and performing between the Dingle peninsula and South Kerry. His journeyman songs and recent ‘Shine Light’ song for homelessness awareness received a presidential endorsement and huge support. Beau recently wrote ‘Na Rudaí Beaga’ by special invitation for Cogar. He wrote the song in what he describes as ‘school Irish’ about the small things in life. The video reads like a pilgrimage with Beau carrying a seed up to Pedlar’s Lake in low hanging cloud, wind and rain. It will be released as part of Cogar on the 1st of December online through @othervoiceslive. Larry Beau is performing a stripped back popup gig at Cogar, Grey’s Lane with very limited capacity at 7.30 pm Friday 26th of November alongside spoken word poet Colm Mac Gearailt. Colm Mac Gearailt, a well-known actor from Ros na Rún has come even more into the public eye for his excellent spoken word performances and is currently artist in residence at An Díseart in Dingle. For Cogar he is performing new poems inspired by the concepts of sanctuary, journeys, and his roots. We are delighted Nicole Ní Dhubhshláine from the Dingle peninsula and Donegal Native Kyle Macauley are part of Other Voices Presents this year. Both young musicians have won numerous, prestigious scholarships and are regular performers in the vibrant West Kerry music scene.

'This is a strange time as we gently rise from what these last few years have brought us. This exhibition presents an opportunity to express this place neither fully emerged nor fully immersed. We play with concepts of sound baths, pilgrimage and sanctuary. Nature and the land are intrinsic to these artists' work and all of them use different mediums to express the importance of place to them. In this safe space, the elements can be seen, felt and heard.’ - Áine Ní Chíobháin Other Voices Presents & Cogar Pop Up Gigs Niamh Varian-Barry, former lead singer of the highly respected group Solas and critically acclaimed singer, fiddle and viola player plays between traditional, folk, and classical. Phoenix Paradiso John O'Connor In the 1988 award-winning film, Cinema Paradiso, a young boy named Toto, in an Italian town is enthralled by the films he watches with a kind projectionist named Alfredo who fosters his love for the magic of the silver screen. In the film, which is set in the years after WW2, the audience is heard booing and kicking up a ruckus when kissing scenes have obviously been deleted - this under directions from the local priest. In another scene there is pandemonium as the patrons await the arrival of a film’s second reel which has been delayed in transit. In the Phoenix Cinema in Dingle several of the scenes from the story of Paradiso were mirrored on a regular basis – right down to the trickster in the balcony launching ‘missiles’ on the rabble below. The Phoenix had its own version of Alfredo and often uproar which included the loud banging of boots on the wooden floor would erupt when the second reel of a film would, in error, be spooled out first. The ensuing ruckus was a protest against the befuddlement of our young minds. Similarly, chaos would abound when the projectionist would be late changing the reels due to his late return from a local hostelry after a quick pint while the first reel was playing. Nearest to the screen were six rows of backless wooden benches (we called them stools) which were preferred by a varied collection of hardy boys. The rows were seldom wholly occupied and often the empty benches to the front were toppled in the dark, domino-like, resulting in a thunderous clatter followed by remonstrative roars from the innocent and furious finger-waving from the caretaker in the direction of the usual suspects. A solemn scene on celluloid would be turned into mayhem in a matter of seconds. Behind the stools and split by the aisle in the middle were several rows of straight-backed benches which housed the more sedate and discerning movie fans – some of whom had their seats marked by dint of long and historic usage. On the left side of the aisle, three rows back, and against the wall, Michael ‘Francie’ O’Sullivan (who would in the future own every seat in the house) laid claim to a spot from whence loud guffaws would be heard at key moments during a performance. Jim Long also occupied left of aisle, outside end, where he could make a quick getaway if the film was not up to scratch. Jim never waited for the end of a film: he would leave nodding his head to a chorus of boos ten to fifteen minutes before the credits rolled. My favoured spot was right of the aisle, well back, where I soaked up the adventure of cowboy films like The Searchers and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and the derring-do of Gregory Peck in The Guns of Navarone. The rear third of the cinema floor had twelve rows of soft seats which were dearer and had a separate entrance - and were boarded-off from the plebeian hoard to the front who had to settle for hard oak. These plush accommodations were occupied by a more refined set whose ranks would rarely be infiltrated by stray ways from the uncouth rabble to the front. The balcony overhead was home to a similar patronage as 24 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

those directly underneath and included some who desired a more intimate cinema experience. We (my brothers and cronies) cared little about our place in the house; while we had our fifteen pennies (there were 240 pennies in a pound note then) for the admission fee we blocked out all the travails of the day and enjoyed the experience where the lines between fantasy and reality were blurred for a few hours each week. In the 1940s and 50s the Phoenix Cinema experience included a pre-show which was provided by two local musicians; a saxophone player and an accordionist who performed on the cinema stage for a half hour before the main event. This assured a modicum of order in the room while the gathering audience assembled a couple of nights a week and took their seats – on Thursdays for westerns and light-hearted fare and on Sundays for more serious drama. The cinema turned in to a ballroom on Saturday night for dancing – the wooden seats were removed and stored, and the softwood floor was taken up to reveal the hardwood dance floor on which the boys and girls lined up on opposite sides at the end of a set to await their chances next time round. The balcony was used as a retreat for successful pairings where lemonade was drunk and talk of love and the future began.

History In July 1921 the Dingle Picture House, which was in operation for several years and owned by the Houlihan family who also owned The Dingle Electric Light and Power Company, was burned down in a huge blaze which also destroyed adjoining businesses owned by Messrs Houlihan. The picture house was adjacent to the Mall River where a millwheel was situated to harness the power to serve the Houlihan industries in the corner of Dykegate Street and Avondale. As the 20th century progressed to using diesel generators the mill wheel became redundant and two large generators took over. At that time (of the cinema fire) several houses in Dingle had the electric light installed by the Houlihan power company and the lighting of the Dingle streets was going ahead. After reconstruction the picture house reopened as the Phoenix Cinema – named after the mythical bird that rose from the ashes. In those early years films didn’t have sound – written captions appeared between scenes to guide the audience through the thread of the story unfolding on screen. In Aug. 1939, following an application to the district court for a dance hall licence, the Phoenix Ballroom with its sprung Canadian maple floor came into being and more than thirty years of dancing to bands like The Troubadours, Rhythm Aces, DJ and the Kerry Blues and The Vanguard Six would follow. This dual purpose of cinema and ballroom beginning in late 1939 followed more than a year of reconstruction of the Phoenix into the cinema we know today. During the rebuilding the townspeople were without their main source of entertainment and had to endure the long months of deprivation from the venue in Dykegate Lane which drew hundreds to its doors each week – one local man describes the feeling of loss aptly: ‘it was a lonesome old time’. But when the new Phoenix reopened in Oct 8. 1939 with a two-night run of Girl of the Golden West starring Janette McDonald

Projector from 1980 and Nelson Eddie, the prolonged hiatus was forgotten, and all was as it should be again. The cinema, under the proprietorship of James and John Houlihan, was also used regularly for concerts and meetings pertaining to the social and business life of the town.

Some Notable Activities Apr. 1924 – Dingle and Listowel badminton tournament May 1924 – Inaugural meeting of Dingle Golf Club Jan 1925 – Big Wren Dance May 1925 – Licensed Vintners Meeting Jan 1928 – Play, “An Doctúir Bréig”, produced by the local branch of the Gaelic League Apr 1930 – Sweepstake under the auspices of Dingle Golf Club. Prizes: 1st £5, 2nd £3, and 3rd £2 July 1930 – Dingle GAA, meeting to discuss erection of paling around the sports field Nov 1932 – Concert in aid of Dingle, Lispole and Ventry church fund Aug 1933 – National Guard Meeting The preferred films in the early decades, especially by rambunctious patrons, were westerns and gangster films. Carnegie Hall, a film made in 1947 - a story of opera and classical music - had the cinema audience in uproar caterwauling and exiting in droves. A patron who witnessed the spectacle said: ‘It was a ruckus the likes of which was never seen before, the commotion could not be quieted by the caretaker for love nor money’. At a concert in the cinema in aid of the St Vincent De Paul Society in 1955, the Very Rev. Canon Lyne, PP, thanked the new owner of the Phoenix, John A. Moore, for the use of the hall and mentioned the generosity of the Houlihan family, the previous owners, down through the years in giving the hall freely to community activities. The Houlihan regime had come to an end and in the following year (1956) a demolition sale for the Dingle Electric Light and Power Company

cinema, Dingle brother and sister dancing duo, Patrick and Mary Ellen Cronesberry, won first prize for their exuberant exhibition of the new dance craze of the day. In June 1969 the Western Ballroom opened in Dingle and thirty years of dancing at the Phoenix were coming to an end. One of the last dances, in 1970, included an appearance by Dana who sang her Eurovision winning song, All Kinds of Everything, to a crowd of 1,300 people on the night after her big win in Amsterdam. The gig was a considerable coup at the time for the organisers, the Dingle Regatta Committee. Terrazzo phoenix on foyer floor was held in the cinema. Under the Moore regime the tradition of cinema, dancing and concerts continued. Films were shown more often, and film posters were exhibited throughout the town in shop windows advertising the attractions for the coming month. Laid out before us were (thirty films, some showing for two nights) the expected treats of westerns, war films and assorted dramas along with a couple of duds.

Notable Events In Aug. 1961 the actress Siobhán McKenna who was filming The Playboy of the Western World at Inch presented prizes to the sea angling festival winners at a dance in the Phoenix. In Feb. 1963 at a ‘twist’ competition in the

For twelve days during June and July in 1972, crowds flocked to see the Dingle Premiere of Ryan’s Daughter – with many hoping to catch a glimpse of their own seconds of fame as extras. In 1979 the Phoenix changed hands again and opened in July 13, 1980 under the ownership of Michael F. O’Sullivan with Kramer vs. Kramer. Michael (O’Sullivan) who was an avid movie fan and a regular attendee of the Phoenix long before I discovered its wonders, spared no expense on the new-look Phoenix. The quality of the new projection and sound systems was hi-tech and there were soft seats for all. And while the Phoenix Nuovo (again mirroring the film Cinema Paradiso where the cinema was bought by a lottery-winning film fan and refurbished) was a welcome rebirth, the old

cinema experience where off-screen stories and shenanigans were part of the ticket, was gone forever. However, some of the old cinema remains intact: the balcony is as it was first day as is the foyer with its terrazzo image of a rising Phoenix evoking memories of the past. The O’Sullivan family continued to keep the show on the road until the recent announcement that the cinema was to close. They had introduced new generations to the grand experience of the lights dimming, the curtains streaming open and the silence descending in expectation of the thrills to come. Michael F. O’Sullivan also founded a Film Club, in 1989, which proved hugely successful and a valuable extension of the Phoenix programme. The Phoenix Cinema was one of the last few independent cinemas remaining in Ireland. For generations it streamed film over our heads in a beam of light from the projection booth to the screen where the magic of film would come alive. The little boy, Toto, watching in the story of Paradiso - that was me watching the magic in my home town - it was my neighbour; it was the boy who ran home along Dykegate Lane after seeing a western at the ‘pictures’ slapping his rump to the beat of the William Tell overture while singing ‘to the dum, to the dum’, in the days when our hum-drum lives were often enriched by the wonder of film and the possibilities it portrayed in a time of innocence.

When I was eleven, my school pal’s Dad, Michael Francie O’Sullivan bought the cinema off John Moore.

Aodh Ó Coileáin

During the refurbishment in that winter of 1979, Michael’s son, Seán, Jamsie Connor the Grove and myself used to lay a plank from the lobby up the steps leading to the cinema. We’d cycle down the auditorium, across the pit, out the emergency doors…. up the hallway, back into the lobby….up the plank…. and in Olympic fashion, around again…overtaking …. skidding ….sliding….cursing…… until:

Opening night at The Phoenix in July 1980 carried the excitement, anxiety and anticipation of Santie’s arrival down our livingroom chimney, I was twelve Christmases of age.

“What in the Christ are ye at?” Michael Francie boomed from the top of the auditorium: “Go ‘way back the Quay with those bicycles … three proper bo**ockses!” His bark was way worse than his bite and over the years, indeed right up until his death in 2011, he shared with me his passion for the movies and his detailed knowledge of cinematic art. Filming a TG4 documentary in Cuba twenty years ago, a gushing feeling convinced me that I’d been in Havana before. A man mopping terrazzo floors in a crumbling neoclassical hotel, shades of green all around: olive, crocodile, military green, Van Gogh green. The smell of Jeyes fluid from his bucket transported my senses to the picturehouse of my youth - right across the street from our house in Dingle. Built in 1918, destroyed by fire twice, it dawned on me in Cuba all those years later that in 1970s Dingle, The Phoenix Cinema oozed all the

Michael Francie spent his youth watching westerns in the old green coloured Phoenix Cinema, ducking under his seat as the horses galloped towards camera in the long tracking shots – just in case they’d spring from the screen in a Becher’s Brook style jump gone wrong. Michael introduced me to the film scores of John Barry, to Stanley Kubrick’s skills at natural lighting, to Meryl Streep’s beauty and to the stories and shenanigans of Ian Fleming’s world. When I came of age, we’d smoke the odd Cuban cigar and discuss how Michael Cimino’s,

Peadar Quinn, Michael Francie’s brother-in-law, a silent plumber by day, became a story-telling projectionist after dark. The brightest lamp I ever saw shone from inside his Italian Cinemeccanica projector, a projector that had come all the way from Milan to Dykegate Lane just in time to show Kramer v. Kramer with Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman. In my beige crimplene confirmation suit and with the help of a small torch, I proudly ushered my neighbours to their blue velvet seats fixed to the lino between walls decked in golden drapes. Everything smelt new just like a freshly glued Airfix plane. A community seated together in the dark, watched a flickering light on a common screen. These nights, for a price, technology beams movies to our phones and our firesides. Never so well connected….. yet we’re eerily such a distance apart. Dingle’s cinema is closed now, but like a lighthouse, the Phoenix’s lamp will rise again to bring us in …. only after technology has swiped the fingers off us, taken us and shaken us… from the highest point of isolation. The above piece was featured as a radio essay (complete with glorious sound effects!) on the RTE Radio 1 show "The Business" on Saturday 20th November West Kerry Live 25

In a good game of football two first half goals coming from Dingle’s, Declan Devane and Mark Ashe were the real difference between two well matched teams. Annascaul under the

Management of Johnny Lenihan gave as good as they got and with Genie Farrell and Jack Farrell leading the attack, they were more than a match for Dingle under the Management of Séamus O’Dowd. Annascaul’s Emmet Kennedy and Alan Falvey had a great contest against Dingle’s Darragh O’Sullivan and Colm Moriarty, but too many times Annascaul’s wayward kicking let them down. Dingle with points from Mikey Boland, Patrick Saunders, Mícheál Slattery and two great scores from Dara and Dan Ryan were deserving winners in the end. Chairperson of the West Kerry Board, John Courtney presented Dingle Captain David O’Connor with the West Kerry Junior Football Cup.

Mary Ferriter Eileen Ní Dhuibhginn & Aisling Ní Dhubhaigh An tseachtain seo caite, ón 15ú go dtí an 19ú lá de Samhain, bhí Seachtain Feasachta LGBTQ+ ar siúl againn sa scoil. Is éard a bhí i gceist leis seo ná seachtain chun tacaíocht agus aitheantas a thabhairt agus a thaispeánt d’éinne a bhaineann leis an bpobal LGBTQ+ (Leispiach, Aerach, Déghnéasach, Trasinscneach agus ‘Queer’). Bhí a lán imeachtaí deasa ar siúl againn i rith na seachtaine. Ar an Luan chroch scoláirí Bhliain 4 an brat LGBTQ+ suas taobh amuigh den scoil agus dúirt beirt dalta agus an Príomhoide cúpla focal faoin ócáid agus an tábhacht a bhaineann leis. Bhí croíthe beaga ildaite crochta ar dhoirse na seomraí ranganna timpeall

On the anniversary of Mary's passing the Ferriter and Moore families wish to thank their neighbours and friends for the incredible kindness, support and generosity they have shown us. We will never forget all those who came out in the wind and rain to bid Mary a final farewell last December. We also wish to thank all those, especially Mary's global family and friends, who sent mass cards, cards, and letters, which continued to arrive many months later, including all who continue to drop in from far and near. What is so clear is that Mary has left her beautiful imprint and her passion in so many hearts and homes around the world, and especially here in West Kerry. One of Mary's favourite sayings was ar scath a cheile a mhaireann na daoine and this has certainly been our experience this past year. na scoile. D’fhéach an scoil ana-dhaite ar fad!

Thank you all so very much, agus Nollaig Shona!

Bhaineamar taitneamh as ‘Tie-dye’ a dhéanamh ar t-léinte bána le dúchanna ildaite amuigh faoin aer. D’eagraigh grúpaí ó Bhliain 4 ana-chuid bácála chun sóláistí deasa a chur ar fáil. Bhí díolachán cístí le bratacha beaga LGBTQ+ curtha isteach iontu ar siúl ar an Aoine. Chomh maith leis seo, i rith na seachtaine mhaisigh scoláirí Bhliain 1 cupchístí agus d’fhéachadar ana-bhlasta ar fad! Ar an Aoine bhí ar gach scoilbhliain dath difriúil a chaitheamh chun

bogha báistí na Pobalscoile a chruthú! Bhí dath oráiste ag Bliain 1, buí ag Bliain 2, dearg ag Bliain 3, glas ag Bliain 4, corcra ag Bliain 5, gorm ag Bliain 6 agus bándearg ar na múinteoirí! Is dóigh linn ar fad go raibh seachtain iontach againn an tSeachtain Feasachta LGBTQ+ seo agus tá siúl againn go dtaispeánann sé go bhfuil ár scoil fáilteach agus tacúil do gach aon duine. Ba mhaith linn chomh maith buíochas mór a ghabháil le Bliain 4, a bhailigh €1773 don Greater Chernobyl Cause! Pictiúirí tógtha ag Shannon Nic Gearailt

‘Mar Éireannach ó áit go labhartar Gaedhilge ...’ Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh ‘Mar Éireannach ó áit go labhartar Gaedhilge ...,’ b’in iad na chéad fhocail Ghaelainne a cualathas riamh i dTigh na dTeachtaí/House of Commons sa Ríocht Aontaithe, sé feichead bliain ó shin. Ceist chugat, a léitheoir – a’ bhfeadairís cé d’fhógair, nó cén eachtra as ar eascair? Bhuel, creid é nó na creid, ógfhear de Mhuintir Dhomhnaill ó Lios Cearnaigh/ Liscarney i bParóiste an Bhaile Dhuibh sa Leitriúch – Tomás Ó Domhnaill/ Thomas O’Donnell (1871-1943) an té sin, le linn dá chéad óráid mar bhall parlaiminte do Chiarraí Thiar i Westminster i Feabhra 1901 – dáilcheantar go ndein sé ionadaíocht air go 1918. Thomas O’Donnell Cérbh é an Tomás Ó Domhnaill seo, agus cén cúlra as ar fáisceadh é? Tá na freagraí úd sa chuntas beathaisnéiseach den scoth i leabhar go dtánga air le déanaí dár teideal A Political Odyssey, Thomas O’Donnell, M.P. for West Kerry 1900-1918,1 le J. Anthony Gaughan a foilsíodh i 1983. Saolaíodh Tom ar an 30 Samhain 1871. B’é an tarna duine de naonúr clainne – triúr dearthár agus cúigear deirféar le Ellen Rohan agus Michael O’Donnell. De réir an bhéaloidis, ba de shliocht shaighdiúirí iarlaí Thír Eoghain agus Thír Chonaill na Domhnallaigh iomadúla a theith go Corca Dhuibhne ar lorg tearmann le treascairt Chionn tSáile i Nollaig 1601. Díshealbhú/Eviction Timpeall na bliana 1850, bhí an talamh atá anois i seilbh Mhuintir Dhomhnaill ar cíos ón dtiarna talún Edward Hussey ag John O’Donnell, seanathair Tom, agus in am is i dtráth, bheadh a mhac Michael mar thionónta inti. Luigh dochfhomhair dara leath na 1870idí go trom ar theaghlach Mhichíl, agus dar ndóigh, ar thionóntaí eile na dúichí. Dá bharra, d’iarradar laghdú ar Edward Hussey mar fhaoiseamh ar a gcíosanna. Mhéadaigh ar mhisneach na dtionóntaí ina n-éileamh go laghdófaí á gcíos le bunú Chonradh na Talún/Irish Land League ag Charles Stewart Parnell, Michael Davitt, James Daly in 1879. Cláraíodh Michael mar bhall de Chonradh na Talún i 1880, agus ag cloí dó le polasaí míleata na gluaiseachta, dhiúltaigh sé an cíos a íoc an bhliain chéanna. Dá thoradh, díshealbhaigh an gníomhaire míthrócaireach Sam Hussey (gaol d’Edward) Muintir Dhomhnaill as a ngabháltas i samhradh na bliana 1881. Ach le linn na díbeartha, bhain Ellen stiall as an mbáille lena súiste/flail, le linn do súd an tine a bhaint den dtinteán mar ghnás díshealbhaithe. Bothán lathaí /Mud cabin Roimh thiteam na h-oíche, áfach, lonnaigh Clann Uí Dhomhnaill i mbothán lathaí a thógadar fhéin le cúnamh na gcomharsan i gcóngar Dhroichead Ghleann na hUmha/Glennahoo, díreach lasmuigh de theorainn Hussey, agus míle go leith ón bhfód dúchais. Is ann a dh’fhanadar ar feadh seacht mbliana, le linn dóibh an fheirm a dh’oibriú feadh an ama. Ag cloí le polasaithe Chonradh an Talún, cuireadh cosc ar aon tionónta úr seilbh a ghlacadh ar thearmann Uí Dhomhnaill, seachas aon iarracht amháin ag “land-grabber” ón iasacht, ach gur theith sé gan mhoill tar éis gur bascadh agus gur maraíodh a chuid stoic. Bunscolaíocht Idir an dá linn d’fhreastail Thomas O’Donnell agus a chlann dearthár is deirféar ar bhunscoil Fhearann na Cille, míle go leith ó bhaile. Bunaíodh an scoil úd i 1840. Bhí 178 leanbh scoile (94 buachaill agus 84 cailín) ar na rollaí i 1877, an bhliain ar thosnaigh Tom ar a chuid scolaíochta. Uncail leis, John ‘Caol’ O’Donnell, a bhí mar phríomhoide ar an am, agus uncail eile, Thomas Rohan, a bhí mar chúntóir aige, maille le, monatóir, John O’Donnell, agus máistreás oibre, Bridget Hannafin, ar fhoireann na scoile Duais Reid Cé gurbh í an Ghaelainn teanga dhúchais Thomáis, b’é an Béarla meán teagaisc na scoile, a d’fhág go raibh sé dátheangach óna óige. Ba scoláire éirimiúil dúthrachtach é Tomás, agus nuair a tháinig an t-am, chuir sé féin spéis sa mhúinteoireacht mar ghairm. Dá réir sin, ghníomhaigh sé mar Mhonatóir ina alma mater ó 1885-’90. Ghnóthaigh Thomas Duais Reid 2 32 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

in 1890 le dea-theagasc a uncail. D’fhág san é i dteideal freastal ar chúrsa oiliúna bunmhúinteoireachta dhá bhliain i gColáiste Oideachais Shráid Mhaoilbhríde i mBaile Átha Cliath. Bhí an coláiste ilchreideamhach so fé stiúir ag Coimisinéirí an Bhoird Oideachais Náisiúnta, ach ba Phreispitéirigh agus Meitidistigh ó thuaisceart Éireann ba mhó a d’fhreastail ann ag an am. Teagasc tré Ghaeilge Tar éis a cháilithe mar bhunmhúinteoir sa choláiste céanna, ceapadh Tomás mar an 3ú cúntóir i mBunscoil na mBuachaillí i gCill Orglan. Chuir Tomás ana-shuim i gcúrsaí teangan agus chláraigh mar bhall de Chonradh na Gaeilge i 1893, agus bhí dlúthbhaint aige le craobh de Chonradh na Gaeilge a bhunú i gCill Orglann i Márta 1890. Bhí Thomas i bpáirt le Dubhghlás de hÍde, uachtarán Chonradh na Gaeilge, agus Eoin Mac Néill i bhfeachtas náisiúnta an Chonartha chun, i) go mbeadh teagasc dátheangach sna dúichí gurbh í an Ghaeilge teanga dhúchais na ndaltaí, ii) go múinfí an Béarla tré Ghaeilge sna ceantracha úd, iii) go múinfí an Ghaeilge i ngach scoil in Éirinn. Theip ar an bhfeachtas i ndeireadh thiar de bharr neamhshuime is patuaire na dteachtaí i Westminster – ní tharlódh a leithéid go bunófaí saor-stát Éireann breis is scór bliain ina dhiaidh sin.

Thomas O’Donnell, M.P., 1900-‘18, A Political Odyssey, lch. 25 Polaitíocht Mar bharr ar a shuim i gcúrsaí teangan, chuir Thomas ana-spéis i gceisteanna móra polaitiúla a linne, go h-áirithe i ceist na talún, agus níl dabht ná go raibh tionchar ag tromthaithí a óige air sa ghné seo. Bhí sé mífhoighneach le Páirtí Pairliminte na hÉireann sna 1890idí toisc a choimeadaí is a bhíodar, agus mar bharr air sin, scoilt a bheith sa pháirtí ag an eite mheán-aicmeach frith-Pharnellach fé cheannas ag Thomas M. Healy. In Eanáir na bliana 1898 bhunaigh William O’Brien an United Irish League [UIL] agus é mar phríomh-aidhm acu iachall a chur ar na tiarnaí talún a gcuid talun a dhíol le Bord na gCeantar Cúng le h-athroinnt ar na tionóntaithe beaga ar fud na tíre. Nuair a tháinig an UIL go Ciarraí i 1899 fuarthas lántacaíocht ó Thomas O’Donnell, agus ní fada ina dhiaidh sin gur bhunaigh sé craobh i gCill Orglan. Ina theannta sin, thug Thomas le fios go mbeadh fáil air mar iarrthóir do dháilcheantar Chiarraí Thiar don olltoghchán Westminster, tar éis a fhógraithe i nDeireadh Fómhair 1900. Olltoghchán 1900 Ní gan dua a tharlódh san, mar ag coinbhinsiún toghcháin UIL a tionóladh i dTrá Lí ar 1ú D. Fómhair 1900 chun iarrathoir don pháirtí a roghnú, mhol seaniondúirí an pháirtí James Edmond Julian mar iarrthóir. Protastánach gustalach le tailte fairsinge i gCiarraí gCiarraí Thuaidh ab ea Julian, agus abhcóide a cáilíodh in Oxford le gnó aige i dTrá Lí mar bharr air sin. D’fhogair Julian ina aitheasc go raibh sé i bhfábhar: i) Home Rule, ii) beartas cóir ar cheist na talún, iii) go mbunófaí ollscoil Chaitliceach. Chuir an tarna iarrathóir, Thomas O’Donnell é féin i láthair mar i) duine den gcosmhuintir, ii) mac tionónta a dísealbhaíodh, iii) agus, an té a fuair a ionsparáid óna theanga dhúchais. Ar deireadh thiar, roghnaíodh an Domhnallach mar iarrathóir todhcháin do pháirtí UIL.

Teachta Nua do Chiarraí Thiar 3,618 as 6,000 vóta a caitheadh ar lá an todhcháin, 8 Deireadh Fómhair, 1900. Le 2,464 vóta, bhí an lá leis an nDomhnallach, 1,065 vóta a fuair Julian, agus 189 vóta a bhí millte. Ar aghaidh le Thomas go dtí Tigh na dTeachtaí i Westminster dá chéad óráid a thug sé ar an 19 Feabhra 1901. Tar éis a ghlaoite agus a ainm a bheith sínithe i nGaeilge aige, d’fhógair an Domhnallach: ‘Mar Éireannach ó áit go labhartar Gaedhilge, fear ó náisiún go bhfuil teanga aici agus atá fós ag deonadh chun saoirse d’fhághail, caithfidh mé labhairt ins an Feis Sasanach seo in mo theanga féin.’ Leis sin, dhein an Speaker idirghabháil: ‘Order, order, the honourable member is proposing to address this House in a language with which I am not familiar, but which I believe is Irish, he is not in order in doing so. D’agair an Domhnallach: ‘Nách fíor-Ghaedhilge mo theanga – teanga mo shinsear, teanga mó thír, teanga go labhras ó bhídheas óg agus gur cheart ...’ Bhí fuar aige, áfach, agus iompaíodh ar Shacs-Bhéarla gan rómhoill, ach, mar sin fhéin, chruthaigh an t-eachtra mórán poiblíochta d’athbheochan na Gaeilge, go háirithe, in Éirinn, i Meiriceá agus san Astráil. Focal scoir Is méanar éachtaint a thabhairt ar shaol eachtrúil Thomáis Uí Dhomhnaill, céad caoga bliain a shaolaithe, fear eisceachtúil – múinteoir, polaiteoir, abhcóide, agus breitheamh sa chuairt chuarda i gCiarraí, i gCo. an Chláir agus i gCo. Luimnigh, agus thar éinní eile, tírghráthóir, a d’éag ar 11ú Meitheamh 1943, agus atá curtha i nGlas Naíon, Baile Átha Cliath. 1 Dermot P. Kinlen, garmhac le Thomas O’Donnell a choimisiúnaigh an bheathaisnéis seo le bunú Iontaobhas Thomas O’Donnell i 1978, le cúnamh ar leith ó Kathleen Browne, Walter McGrath agus an tAth. Jackie Mac Ginneá. 2 Richard T. Season the fish with salt and pepper, brush the skin with a little oil. Place the fish on top of the squash with the skin side facing up. Put this back in the oven and bake for about 8-10 minutes. Check the fish with a sharp knife or a skewer. While the fish is cooking you can make the sauce. Put the herbs, lemon, capers, olive oil in a blender, blitz until smooth (If you don’t have a blender, you can chop everything as fine as you can and then mix). Season with salt and pepper. Senior Team:Sponsored by Almas Takeaway & Bathrooms 4U Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship SemiFinal: Result Milltown/Castlemaine 1-07 Laune Rangers 1-11 Milltown/Castlemaine welcomed near neighbours Laune Rangers to the Paddy Burke Memorial Park in Milltown on Saturday afternoon for the semi-final of the 2021 Mid Kerry Senior Football Championship. In an ideal start for the home side, Cathal Moriarty raised a green flag after Jonathan O'Sullivan seen his effort rattle the crossbar in the same move. Laune Rangers settled and points from Fiachra Clifford, John Tyther and Shane Doona (2) had them trailing by the bare minimum at the half time interval at 1-2 to 0-4 with the two pointed efforts from the hosts coming from Cathal Moriarty and Kieran

O'Carroll. There was also an opportunity for the lead to be extended approaching the interval when a penalty was awarded, however Jason Browne in the Laune Rangers goals saved and diverted the ball out for a '45' which proved to be a big moment in the contest as it kept the away side in the hunt at a stage where had it been converted, the difference would have been five points. Laune Rangers will have no doubt looked at their seven first half wides also and point to the fact that they could have led at the break. Into the second half and it was the hosts who were quickest out of the blocks with three Jonathan O'Sullivan points seeing a four point gap open at 1-5 to 0-4. Laune Rangers showed their resillience however and dug in, landing 1-2 on the trot through a goal from John Tyther following a goal line scramble and points from Tyther and Kieran Doona seeing the visitors lead for the first time all afternoon after 40 minutes. Substitute Kieran McKenna did level the game soon after but a Fiachra Clifford free in response seen Laune Rangers lead 1-7 to 1-6 at the second half water break. Upon the resumption further points from Fiachra Clifford (free) and Gearóid Hassett opened up a three point gap at 1-9 to 1-6. Cillian Burke did try and steady the ship with a well taken score off his left side to cut the arrears but it was ultimately to no avail on the day as Laune Rangers kicked for home and rounded off victory with two injury time points from Gearóid Hassett and substitute Daire Cleary to leave four points the difference at the conclusion.

Small Changes: Talking Shite

The ancient Romans were great fans of communal toilets based on the fact that there were 143 latrines in the city by the 4th century AD. As toilet paper didn’t originate until the 1850s, they shared a sponge attached to a stick to wipe their posteriors (this practice gave rise to the phrase ‘to get the wrong end of the stick’). They also collected vats of urine to clean their clothes and imported bottles of Portuguese urine (believed to be the strongest and therefore best) to use as a disinfecting mouthwash and teeth whitener. This type of information turns the stomachs of most people used to the comforts of indoor plumbing and inventions such as the s-bend and the flushing toilet. Even though outside toilets, open sewers and use of the chamber pot were the norm in this country until relatively recently (1960s), modern sanitary systems mean that we are able to create, and believe, the illusion that all the offending waste goes ‘away’. As stated in this column before, there is no such place as ‘away’ and in the case of waste water this fact is highlighted by the findings of a number of recently published reports. Waste water from our homes includes water (and everything contained in that water) from toilets, sinks, showers & baths, dishwashers and washing machines. The objective of waste water treatment is to remove polluting material so that the treated water can be released safely into the environment where it is essentially recycled. Depending on where you live, the waste water either goes into a public sewer operated by Irish water or your own domestic waste water treatment system. The EPA’s report on Urban Waste Water Treatment in 2020 published this month disclosed that 34 towns and villages in Ireland are still releasing raw sewage into the aquatic environment (marine and freshwater) every single day because they are not connected to a waste water treatment facility. Furthermore, 12 large towns and cities (which generated half of Ireland’s waste water) did not meet European waste water treatment standards. This is an issue because not only does raw sewage contain bacteria, viruses and parasites that are harmful to human health but also because it has very negative effects on aquatic ecosystems. In addition, sewage related litter (e.g. cotton buds, nappies, sanitary products, cotton wool & wipes) which people flush down their toilets is becoming an ever increasing problem. Not only do these items get tangled in machinery at treatment plants causing break downs and emergency overflows of sewage into the environment, they also cause major blockages in the system when they mix with oils, fats and grease (which are also incorrectly poured down sinks and drains) to form putrid ‘fatbergs’. In 2018, Irish water cleared more than 6000 sewer blockages around the country. It is unlikely that this number will decrease anytime soon considering that a 2019 survey by An Taisce revealed that a very large proportion (60%) of people still think it is acceptable to pour fats,

oil and grease down their drains. Sewers are not an option for rural dwellers and so their wastewater is treated using domestic waste water treatment systems (DWWTS). There is an estimated 500,000 DWWTS (most of them are septic tanks) in Ireland and every homeowner is required by law to ensure their treatment system is operated and maintained properly so that it doesn’t pose a risk to human health or the environment (e.g. contaminate household wells or cause pollution in nearby waterways). Another EPA report found that 54% of DWWTS inspected last year failed (maintenance issues or structural leaks were the main reasons) with 23% of them found to be a risk to human health or the environment. The extent of the negative impact of poorly managed DWWTS is difficult to ascertain due to the variation in the number of tests carried out by local authorities. Under the National Inspection Plan, 1000 checks should be carried out nationwide annually. This number was down last year (809 inspections) due to the pandemic but Wexford Co. Co., for example, carried out 111 of those tests while Kerry Co. Co. carried out just one inspection. An issue which gets less attention than fecal coliform counts, fatbergs and odour problems from treatment facilities, but no less important, is that of the chemical contamination of sewage. We use hundreds of chemicals daily in our homes from household cleaning agents, personal care products such as shampoos and conditioner and pharmaceuticals (e.g. prescription medicines) all of which go down the drain directly or indirectly (consider that every last product in the cleaning and personal care aisles of every supermarket and shop on the peninsula eventually ends up in waste water). At the very least these chemicals disrupt/kill the microbes treating waste water leading to non-functioning septic tanks and biocycles. At the other end of the scale is the significant incidence of intersex fish (male and female characteristics in an animal that should be just either male or female) in many European rivers and antibiotic resistant superbugs due to antimicrobial cleaners, medicines and hormone disrupting chemicals poured down drains. Almost all waste water sludge in Ireland is reused in agriculture. At present this sludge is only tested for heavy metals (i.e. mercury, lead, copper, zinc) prior to being spread on land so it’s probable that many toxic and persistent contaminants build up in soils. Building and maintaining waste water treatment facilities is a job for Irish water but there is a lot that we can do as individuals. To begin with we can conserve water. The invention of flushing toilets increased the volume of waste water created when humans use the bathroom by 20 fold. Displacing some the water in your cistern (use a brick or a full bottle of water) will ensure you use less water each time you use the bathroom. Take shorter showers, use a basin in the sink to wash up and don’t leave the tap running when brushing your teeth. Using less water means less waste water to be treated. Clean coasts Ireland in partnership with Irish Water are running a ‘Think before you Flush’ campaign (http://thinkbeforeyouflush.org). There are only 3 things that should ever be flushed down the toilet- Pee, Poo and toilet Paper; everything else should go in a bin. They have also started a ‘think before you pour’ campaign to highlight the issues caused when people pour fats, oils and grease down the sink. These should instead be collected in a container which can then brought to the civic amenity centre. Finally, think about the cleaning products you use in your home. For example, nobody disinfects cutlery or crockery (items we eat off and actually place in our mouths), yet pouring copious volumes of bleach etc. into a toilet bowl that nobody every touches is the norm. It makes even less sense when you consider that most people do not scrub the toilet or bathroom after every single use or clean down walls etc. as part of their daily cleaning routine (apparently splash back can travel up to six feet from toilets flushed with the seat up!). Washing your hands with warm soapy water will prevent any nasty bugs from making yourself or others ill, natural cleaning products such as baking soda will absorb any odours in the bathroom and washing soda removes lime scale from the toilet bowl. A white vinegar solution will hygienically clean all surfaces. It is worth mentioning that the ancient Romans kept their toilet sponges in a vinegar bath when not in use and that civilisation lasted for over 1000 years. West Kerry Live 39

Cromane GAA SENIORS: Mid Kerry SFC semifinal: Cromane 1-8, Beaufort 3-15 Cromane interest in this year’s Mid Kerry SFC ended on Sunday after a third-quarter scoring spree from Beaufort when they hit 1-5 without reply. It was a scoring burst that put the game beyond us. It was a disappointing end but we can take some solace from a fine opening half when we led by 1-6 to 1-3 entering injury time. We also spurned a golden goaling chance early in the second half which would have put us four clear. But, despite the final scoreline, our lads (down a few bodies and suffering some injury blows) were able to go toe-to-toe with the county intermediate finalists. However, once Beaufort edged ahead the floodgates opened as their extra scoring class told - especially full-forward Jack O’Connor who ended the day with 1-6. An O’Connor free had the sides level at 1-6 apiece after 36 minutes and it came just moments after Cromane missed a glaring goaling chance to move four ahead early in the second half. However, we just didn’t take the chance and Beaufort made us pay. Our opponents proceeded to kick 1-4 without reply after O’Connor’s equalising free - with O’Connor helping himself to 1-2 and the other scores coming from captain Fergal Hallissey and Ciaran Kennedy. At this stage, Beaufort was dominating around the middle especially on the ground ball and we started to struggle. A Barry Flanagan free stemmed the flow of oneway scores but, by the second half water break, Beaufort were well on top leading by 2-10 to 1-7. It was all so different in the first half when we more than matched our opponents. Despite an early Beaufort goal which put the victors 1-1 to 0-1 ahead after 5 minutes, we were the better side. Points from Liam Walsh (two), Mikey Houlihan, Flanagan and Donnchadh Walsh 40 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

meant we were only a point in arrears at the first half water break, 0-5 to 1-3. We were then hit with a double injury blow with Conor Sugrue and Shane Ahern departing, although Shane did reappear in the second half. Our lads kept pushing with some nice direct football and Mikey Houlihan levelled matters in the 29th minute with a fine point. From the resultant kick-out, we won possession again and a lovely more between Flanagan, Mikey Houlihan and Darragh McKeefry ended with Darragh firing low for a goal. Cromane were suddenly up 1-6 to 1-3 in first-half injury time. Beaufort steadied themselves and made full use of the seven minutes of added time from the earlier injuries to reduce the deficit to one at the break, thanks to points from O’Connor and Hallissey to leave the half time score: Cromane 1-6, Beaufort 1-5. Early in the second half came that gilt-edged goaling chance for Cromane and the resultant scoring spree that put Beaufort 2-10 to 1-7 up by the second half water break. The winners didn’t take their foot off the pedal adding another 1-5 with the goal in the final minute. All is not lost on the year as we have a Novice FC semi-final to look forward to next Sunday against Moyvane in Strand Road, Tralee. Film Review: Ghostbusters: Afterlife Tom Ó Neachtain

imagination which made the 1984 original a classic are mostly present here.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the newest attempt at revitalising this supernatural comedy franchise, af ter the misstep that was 2016’s Ghostbusters. This film follows a dysfunctional family who inherit a house in the middle of nowhere, previously owned by one of the original Ghostbusters, where they soon unearth an ancient supernatural threat, with potentially world-ending consequences. Jason Reitman, son of the original’s director Ivan, has established himself as a strong director over the last decade, and is an ideal fit for a Ghostbusters sequel. This, and a few returning cast members, already make this film an exciting prospect for long-time fans. Overall, the wit and 42 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

One of the film’s strongest attributes is the clever switch to a small-town setting, making it stand out when compared to the other citybased entries in this franchise. This, matched with Reitman’s reliably strong visuals, make this easily the best looking Ghostbusters films to date. The creative scares of the original sadly absent from subsequent films, thankfully return here. The opening and closing scenes play more on horror elements than family films usually risk, and benefit hugely from it. The new cast, for the most part, are all enjoyable and give the touching ending some real dramatic weight. However, many of the film’s better character-actors are mis-cast or wasted in smaller roles, and seem to be forgotten by the end. The film’s dependency on nods and references to the original becomes over-bearing at times, and often takes the attention away from

important plot-points. This problem gets worse as the film goes on, with the final act feeling more like a repeat of the original’s finale, than a loving homage. Despite it’s over-reliance on references to the franchise’s existing entries, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is an energetic, clever, heartfelt blockbuster, easily the best the franchise has been since the original. The Dingle Phoenix Cinema recently closed-up permanently, and will be greatly missed by the residents of Dingle and West Kerry. I’d like to thank the Ó Sullivan family for many years of reliable and committed service to the silver screen.

Réiteach Uimhir

Réiteach

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Tá an lá ag ciorrú agus an fuacht á réiteach féin. Gaoth anoir aduaidh agus aniar aduaidh. Sin mar a bhíonn aige. Faid is tá tuilte agus gaoth in áiteanna eile mar lár agus iarthar Mheiriceá, Canada agus oirthear an domhain. Cuimhnigh dá fhaid a bheidh an saol mór ag súmadáil ‘sea is measa a bheidh an aimsir. Le tamall bhíos ag cur síos ar an bpraghas atá ar chaoire agus beithigh. Cuimhnigh go bhfuil árdaithe ar phraghas artola, gás, toitíní 7rl. Tuigim cás na bhfeirmeoirí agus a leithéidí ach tá saol na milliún i gceist agus anois tá sé raite go mbeadh feamanach sa bhia do bha mar shampla a bheadh abalta laghdú mór a dhéanamh ar an dtruailliú a meastar a thagann ó bha. Sa chás seo níl aon leathscéal ag éinne. Caithfidh gach aon duine claoi le treoir an lucht leighis agus feamanach a ithe agus a bhailiú. An víoras Is fiú féachaint ar chás na hÓstaire ná thug mórán airde ar an víoras ach d’imigh an cladhaire do féin. Anois tá fanacht baile ar na haon duine agus aon duine nó daoine ná glacann leis na hórdaithe gheobhaidh siad príosún nó gearrfar airgead trom ortha. Deir siad go mbeidh ar gach duine vaicsín i gcoinne an víoras a bheith faighte acu fé Fheabhra. Cuirfidh san piobar leis an bpobal. Ba cheart é a bheith ins gach áit leis an ruaig a chur ar an galar a deirtear. N’fheadar fé sin. Caint An tráthnóna eile bhíos ag éisteacht le Diarmaid Ferriter [eolaí staire] ag cur as fé an gConradh as a eascair an Cogadh Cathardha, an socrú le Sasana. Uaireanta ní ghéillim dó ach bhí a raibh le rádh aige sa Daingean ar fheabhas. Thug sé cuntas beacht ag an gCogadh Cathardha, Éirí Amach na Cásca agus an saol inniu. Bhí sé go diail ar fad, dar liom. Is trua ná éisteann daoine lena leithéid sa chás seo. Mhínigh agus réitigh sé freagraí ar fhadhbanna mí-thuisciona a bhíonn ag scata. B’fhiú thabhairt fén nDíseart. Roimhe sin bhíos ag éisteacht ar Zoom le Cathal Poirtéir ag gcaint fé choimirce Ollscoil Chorcaí agus é ar a dhícheall ar éachtaint a thabhairt ar an nGorta Mór i bhfoinsí éagsúla. Dhein sé a chúram go beacht agus d’fhág slí do aon duine a thuairimí a nochtadh. Ní inniu ná inné a labhair Cathal ar eilimintí do stair na hÉireann ach bhí a ndúirt sé an- thuiscionach ciallmhar. Bheadh daoine á rá conas nár éirigh Gaeil amach. Bhíodar bocht buailte ag an ocras agus pláigh. Ní raibh cabhair in aon aird. D’fhág na Peín Dlithe agus a lean an t-iachall tailte na muintire a roinnt ar an gclann rud a fhág scata ar bheagán talún. Bhí cíos damanta agus an toradh ní raibh san ag na feirmeoirí bochta, cuireadh scata Éireann as seilbh agus amach ar thaobh an bhóthair. N’fheadar conas a thug Sasana na cosa leo de bharr an marú a dheineadar ón oirthear dtí an iarthar. Ní sheasadar le conraí a bhí réitithe agus fiú inniu ta siad ag déanamh nea-shuim do bheartais Aoine an Chéasta. Dúirt an Monsignór Ó Mainín sa leabhar, Fiche Céad Chorca Dhuibhne gur thit an daonra dtí a leath i bparóistí áirithe. Is fiú féachaint ar an ndíothú a tháinig ar an nGráig agus Baile na bPoc. Faid a bhí na mílte ag fáil bháis don ocras bhí báid ag tarrac coirce agus eorna amach as an dtir. Bheadh sé deacair ag duine an sléacht a mhaitheamh dóibh agus tá siad fós ag cur a gcosa uatha. Dfhágadar an tAontas Eorpach agus ní fada ná go rabhadar ag éileamh margaí bheith acu leis an Aontas Eorpach agus nára maith acu. Fágfam é mar scéal go fóill. Muintir Uí Súilleabháin ó Imeall Átha Bhí moladh ag dul do Mhícheál ó Suilleabháin agus a dheirfiur Siobhán Mhic Einrí ó Imeall Átha, as a gcumas ar fhaiche na litríochta, ag seiminár in Aras Bhréanainn le déanaí. Thug a iníon an tSiúir Máire éachtainti ar chumas Mhichíl agus léig Aedín nic Éinrí, iníon Shiobhán, ladhar dánta. Is iontach an scoláire é Pádraig ó hÉalaí. Labhair Pádraig ar Mhícheál agus mhínigh scata ainmneacha eagsúla agus d’éirigh leis an greann bheith ina chur i lathair go cliste cáibhneach. Bheinn ag éisteacht go headra bó le Pádraig. B’í Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin a bhí sa chathaoir. An- lá. Pictiúirí agus Rincí Is trua mhór go bhfuil an Phoenix sa Daingean dúnta. Tá cuimhní áthasacha

againn ar scannáin agus an sport a lean an Pictiúrlann a bhí ag Muintir uí Shúilleabháin le blianta. Le linn dom bheith ag freastal ar a scoil na mBráthar Críostai sea a thiteas i ngrá leis ‘na pictiúirí’ mar a deirimís. Molaimíd muintir hUallacháin a thosnaigh, agus ina ndiaidh Muintir Shúilleabháin Micheál, Francie, Caitlín agus Seán a chuir na scannáin ar fáil dtí gur chuir Covid-19 stop le gach rud. Bhíodar coitianta fial fáilteach. Táimíd buíoch dóibh. Brathfam uainn go mór an Phoenix, áit ina gcuir mórán buachaillí agus cailíni aithne ar a chéile ag na rincí a bhíodh ann fadó. Caid + Iománaíocht Tá comórtas caide Chiarraí Thiar fé 15 buaite ag Buachaillí na Gaeltachta. Bhíodar go diail in aghaidh an Chaisleáin ar an nDomhnach seo caite i bPáirc Bharóid i Lios Póil. Tá an- mholadh ag dul dóibh. Beidh an chraobh sinsir caide i dTrá Lí i mbliana tréis do pheileadóirí Chéirín Ó Rathallaigh buachaint ar Crócaigh Chill áirne le pointe. Bhí liodáin cluiche sinsir club contae againn an deire seachtaine seo caite. Bhuaidh na Stacaigh ar Naomh Breandán ar éigean i gcraobh leathcheannais sinsir caide Chiarraí. Bhíodar cothrom ag deire an chluiche agus tréis am breise. Bhí ciceanna pionóis mar eirbeall ar an gcluiche agus fuair na Stacaigh an lá le dhá chic pionóis. 5 vs 3. N’fheadar conas a bhuaidh Mainistir na Corann craobh chomórtas sinsir chlubanna iomána chontae Chorcaigh ar Fhánaithe an Ghleanna an nDomhnach seo caite. Ard chluiche. Chaill na fánaithe báide leis an bpoc deireannach a chuaidh orlaí amú. Bhí buachaillí na Mainstreach go diail. Bhuaidh foireann An Chnoic craobh sinsir caide Mhaigh Eó in aghaidh foireann Bhéal an Mhuirthid ar an nDomhnach seo caite. Bhí an chluiche loitithe ag an líon feall a bhí ann cluiche gan dealramh. Bhuaidh Loch Mór ar imreóirí caide Chluain Meala i gcómortas sinsir chlubanna caide an chontae, an- chluiche.
