Congratulations to the proprietors and staff of the four Dingle accommodation providers who featured in the Top 10 of the Irish Independant Readers Travel Awards this week. Pax House topped the list closely followed by Castlewood House, Heaton's and Greenmount House in the Quality Bed and Breakfast Sector. Castlewood House topped the list in the Best Breakfast List with the other three aforementioned premises also highly commended. Just reward indeed for the quality service all these outlets are well renowned for many years now and keep our Peninsula very much in the National and International Tourism Displayboard. GRANTS. The Business Chamber welcome the announcement that Funding of €280,000 is being made available under the Active Travel Investment Grants this year for Projects in this area. €50,000 is to start work on Green Street in town and the remainder on the ongoing work with the Walk and Cycleway from Dingle to Ceann Tra. The improvements already completed in Ceann Trá are very well received and a credit to the management and staff of Kerry County Council and the cooperation of the local landowners as well. PEIL. Dingle Senior Team had a good start to the season with an away win over Annascaul last weekend. Also great to see Tom O'Sullivan and Paul Geaney featuring prominently in Kerry's success in the McGrath Cup competition during January. I think that the harsh criticism of the Kerry team following the draw in the away game against Kildare is unwarranted. This Kildare team are a very much improved outfit and with the spirit shown last Sunday should be respected in the top tier of Gaelic Football. The result is an eye opener for our lads who may not have as much collective training done yet this year. READERS SUGGESTIONS. This Castlegregory native most recently worked with Fexco and is already heavily involved in upgrading the facilities in the Hub. This feeds into one of the overall aims of the Hub: to support the creation of viable and sustainable incomes. ESB Electric Vehicle Trial Ends You will have seen distinctive Electric Vehicles (EV) being used in the ESB Networks' Dingle Project across the peninsula over the past year. This 17 car trial ended on January 31st with about 360,000 kilometres being driven. We’re very pleased to learn that this experiment avoided over 40 tonnes of Carbon dioxide being emitted into our atmosphere. (Reducing our overall emissions on the Dingle peninsula by 0.02%. Imagine the difference more EVs on our roads would make!) The trial’s initial findings show that EVs really are suitable for most journeys undertaken by people living in rural communities like ours. Some of the participants say they will explore purchasing EVs to replace existing petrol or diesel cars. We will share more on ESB's trial when the analysis arrives. Philosophy We’re delighted to announce a new workshop taking place in the Hub The Great Story: An Introduction to Philosophy/ Scéal Faoi Leith: Buntreoir do Fhealsúnacht, facilitated by Kevin J. Power. Starting 22nd February, it continues on Tuesday evenings 7-9pm for 8 weeks. Kevin teaches Philosophy with UCC Adult Continuing Education and this course will explore why philosophy exists in the first place, its origins, methods of philosophy, major themes and learn to apply critical thinking skills to understand and act on contemporary issues. Workshop will be discussion-based, interactive with peer learning. Connection and overlap with arts and literature, reconnection with nature. Essential Eating to Get Well Sooner Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Wholegrains offer the best plant-based supply of B vitamins especially buckwheat, oats, brown rice, amaranth and quinoa. During illness and recovery these grains are best soaked for 24-48 hours before cooking and could be cooked in the bone broth. No single food has all B vitamins in rich supply so eating a variety of grains and vegetables will help to ensure a good supply. Vitamin C foods are also a must during and to prevent illness. Raw, fresh fruit offer a good supply – choose thick-skinned raw fruits like oranges, lemons, pineapple and melon as they are protected from bacteria and viruses by their skin. Lightly-steamed or raw green vegetables also provide vitamin C. Fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kefir and kombucha are among the most nutritious and digestible foods available and are a natural source of good bacteria (probiotics) essential for immune function. Useful supplements to use during recovery include B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D3, zinc and good quality probiotics. Warm drinks as herbal teas - echinacea, fenugreek, ginger, tulsi (holy basil), chamomile, thyme and green tea are all good tonics for recovery.
Even without the remnants of Covid-19, it's that time of year when many of us are either in the midst of illness or languishing in its aftermath. Body aches, low energy levels, reduced appetite and a heavy head are just some of the symptoms people experience post-illness. Whether it is a serious illness that involved harsh treatment or a viral attack such as the common cold and flu, nutrition plays a crucial role in your recovery. Poor nutrition during the recovery stage may hinder the repair and rejuvenation of the body and makes healing process a long, arduous road. Obviously, patients' needs differ greatly depending on age, the illness and treatment involved but there are some fundamental tips that apply to most of us during any convalescence. The aim of convalescent nutrition is to maximize nutrientrich eating with minimum digestive effort. This is because most of our immune cells are produced in the gut and the digestive tract is often a primary or secondary target in illness and disease. Also, treatments such as antibiotics, steroids, chemotherapy and anti-inflammatory drugs can disrupt normal intestinal function. Therefore, it is important to keep food light, nutritious and easy to digest while ensuring it offers a decent supply of calories and nutrients for recovery and repair.
Medicinal mushrooms such as Chaga, Cordyceps, Shiitake and Reishi have been used as immune tonics in Eastern Europe and Asia, and now available in this part of the world. Finally, meals are best served small and appealing to the eye to encourage appetite during an illness. In Victorian times, a patient's meal was beautifully presented on dainty crockery along with a posy of flowers. Psychologically, most of us respond well from feeling loved and cared for during illness, particularly young children and the elderly. If you are caring for someone who is sick, be sure to keep them company while they eat. It is often difficult to dine alone, but particularly so when you are not feeling well. Being ill can take its toll on both mental and physical health - but good food, good company and a good giggle may well be the best medicine of all! Avoid warmed-up leftovers and pre-cooked frozen meals as these are less nutritious and carry a greater risk of bacterial contamination - the convalescents’ immunity is already impaired and they may not ward off another infection as efficiently as a healthy person. Red meat, fried or fatty foods are also a no-no. They are difficult to digest and use up vital energy to process through the digestive system - energy that would otherwise be available to the repair process. Sugar, sugary drinks and junk snacks are also off the menu during illness and recovery. Just a teaspoon of sugar can suppress immune activity by 50% for up to four hours after ingestion. Sugar interferes with the transport of vitamin C into cells - possibly the most important nutrient in all aspects of immunity. Sugar reduces the production of protective antibodies. Sugar causes mineral imbalances and neutralizes the action of essential fatty acids, making our cells more vulnerable to prolonged attack from viruses, bacteria and other invaders. Bottom line, sugar has no place on the bedside locker, full stop! Best foods for recovery are made from fresh produce - fruit, vegetables and some wholegrains. Protein, necessary for rebuilding and repair of cells is best sourced from white fish, organic poultry and vegetables, beans and legumes. Red meat and pork products are not recommended as part of a recovery diet when the body is weak. However, broth made from longsimmered bones of organic beef, chicken or lamb can build up strength. Bone broth is easily digested and provides minerals, adds valuable amino acids (proteins) and flavour to hot drinks, soups and vegetable dishes. If you feel that you require extra protein during this time use easily-digestible whey protein powder or a plant-based protein powder. These powders are usually rich in B vitamins too and can be added to cereal, smoothies, juices and soups when appetite is low. Another valuable food source of B vitamins include nutritional yeast (flakes/powder) available in health food shops and some supermarkets. These can be added to warm drinks or soups with added chilli, ginger and garlic for extra oomph! Our bodies use up a great amount of B vitamins during stress and illness. We do not store B- vitamins in the body and need to top up daily for energy, immunity and recovery. Farming News Louis Murchan EU VOTE ON LIVE ANIMAL TRANSPORT The European Parliament’s report includes a range of recommendations for the European Commission in advance of changes to existing legislation on animal welfare during transport. The European Parliament’s Committee of Inquiry on the Protection of Animals during Transport (ANIT) initially proposed a number of recommendations that would have negatively impacted the Irish dairy industry. However, a huge backlash on the proposals led to MEPs, including the majority of those from Ireland, backing a number key amendments to the recommendations, when they went to a vote in the European Parliament plenary: • The recommendation that the minimum age of transport for calves be raised to 35 days and a 2-hour limit placed on the transport of un-weaned calves older than this was deleted in favour of a 28-day age limit and an exemption to this allowed for journeys under 50 km. • A proposed ban on transport of pregnant heifers in third trimester was amended to allow their transport for up to 4 hours. • An amendment to limit transport by sea to 24 hours was rejected. • All the amendments that called to ban exports to third countries or to set up a blacklist of countries, where live animals can be exported have been rejected. Nevertheless, the recommendations still call for “the Commission to develop a list of third countries applying rules at least as protective as those in the EU”. While these recommendations from the European Parliament hold no legal force, they are likely to be very influential in shaping the Commission’s new legislative proposal on the matter, which is expected in 2023. NEW ANTIMICROBIALS INCLUDING THE 5-DAY PRESCRIPTION LENGTH RULE COME INTO FORCE These new regulation requires that antimicrobials are not used routinely or to compensate for poor hygiene, inadequate animal husbandry or poor farm management. After January 2022, antimicrobials can be used only for prophylaxis in 'exceptional cases' for administration to an individual animal or restricted number of animals when the risk of infection is very high and consequences are likely to be severe. Antimicrobials will be prescribed by vets acting within a Client-Patient-Practice-Relationship (CPPR) in line with the Veterinary Council of Ireland’s Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Practitioners. Prescriptions that are currently in place with a validity of 12 months will expire on 2nd February 2022. This is particularly important for prescriptions issued under a Mastitis Control Programme (MCP). From 28th January, antibiotics can no longer be used as disease prevention method and the prescribing of antibiotics to individual animals or a group of animals will require the diagnosis of disease in those animals. On dairy farms this will lead to the introduction of Selective Dry Cow Therapy (SDCT) and consequently greater levels of milk recording across the national herd. There is a short derogation until June 2022 for the implementation of the new rules regulating antiparasitic medicines. This means that anti-parasitic products, including worm and fluke doses, lice and fly treatments and coccidiostats will remain available as over-the-counter products from co-op premises, not requiring a veterinary prescription until 1st June 2022. The derogation period will be required to fully integrate all software systems (Veterinary, DAFM, LM/co-op) with the new National Veterinary Prescribing System (NVPS). Prescription lengths for antiparasitic vet medicines will be 12 months, after June 2022. Paper-based veterinary prescriptions will remain valid for the time being and can be used at any veterinary medicine outlet. The new NVPS electronic prescription system can be used by prescribing vets on a voluntary basis until June to allow vets, farmers and co-ops to transition to the new system. The requirement to only supply antiparasitic medicines on foot of a veterinary prescription is deferred until 1 June 2022. A prescription will not be required for such products until that date. This is to allow the necessary business and/or infrastructural adjustments that will ensure compliance and the Regulations will apply in full from 1 June 2022. The new National Veterinary Prescription System (NVPS) will be in place by the end of January. Veterinary practitioners can continue to issue paper-based prescriptions in the current format until then. HEDGE CUTTING BAN TO TAKE EFFECT ON MARCH 1 The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage is reminding the public that there is just a little over one month left for hedge cutting before the closed season. The cutting, grubbing, burning or other destruction of “vegetation growing in any hedge or ditch” is prohibited between March 1 and August 31, under section 40 of the Wildlife Act 1976. The NPWS took 31 section 40 prosecution cases in 2021 and it said that it hopes that fewer will be necessary this year. In Ireland, our relatively low cover of native woodland makes our hedgerows exceptionally important for biodiversity, according to the NPWS. The NPWS added that hedgerows provide botanical diversity as well as food and shelter for animals, most notably birds. They also act as corridors connecting habitats. Untrimmed, thorny hedges are favoured by birds, but birds may nest in any hedge, according to the wildlife service. The prohibition outlined above does not apply in a number of circumstances set out in the act. For landowners, businesses and the general public the most notable of these exemptions are: • The destruction, in the ordinary course of agriculture or forestry, of any vegetation growing on or in any hedge or ditch. In the act, “agriculture” is defined as including horticulture. Since horticulture includes gardening, the summertime trimming of hedges in the ordinary course of gardening falls under this exemption; • The clearance of vegetation in the course of road or other construction works or in the development or preparation of sites on which any building or other structure is intended to be provided; • The felling, cutting, lopping, trimming or removal of a tree, shrub, hedge or other vegetation pursuant to section 70 of the Roads Act 1993. Section 70 of the Roads Act 1993 provides that “the owner or occupier of land shall take all reasonable steps to ensure that a tree, shrub, hedge or other vegetation on the land is not a hazard or potential hazard to persons using a public road, and that it does not obstruct or interfere with the safe use of a public road or the maintenance of a public road”. The NPWS recommends that such “reasonable steps” are taken between September 1 and February 28, where possible. It is an offence under Section 22 of the Wildlife Act 1976 to wilfully destroy, injure, or mutilate the eggs or nest of a wild bird, or to wilfully disturb a wild bird on, or near, a nest containing eggs or un-flown young birds at any time of the year. PROJECT TO TRANSFORM BIOLOGICAL WASTE INTO FERTILISER A new project aimed at turning biological waste, into fertiliser and biochemicals is underway at Munster Technological University (MTU) Kerry, Funded by Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Waste (including municipal sludge, dairy processing sludge and black bin waste) will be transformed into sustainable bio-based fertiliser and biochemicals for the
agriculture, food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical sectors. The research will see MTU team up with the University of Limerick (UL), Technological University Dublin, clean technology company BHSL and the Circular Bioeconomy Cluster South-West. The project will concentrate on using thermal conversion processes to create value from waste products by turning them into a clean source of energy.

The residual ‘ash’ by-product can be for used as an effective agricultural fertiliser for plant growth and soil health. BHSL, which is headquartered in Co. Limerick, will provide expertise to researchers on transforming biowaste, which might otherwise end up in landfill, into energy. The project is a collaboration between the private sector and third level institutions to support the circular economy in the south west. The project is set to begin this spring with research findings to be shared over the course of the next four years.

IRELAND’S FIRST NATIONAL FARM INCLUSIVITY SURVEY. The survey has been developed by the Women in Agriculture Stakeholders Group (WASG) and the University of Limerick (UL) and will be used to benchmark the progress made by various incoming policy measures, under the CAP 2023 and Food Vision 2030, to address the challenges in the sector regarding diversity and inclusivity. The survey is anonymous and takes less than five minutes to complete. Everyone is asked to take part and share their input. Irish dairy farms operate as family businesses, with CSO figures indicating that 70,000 women work on farms every day. However just 13,000 women are recognised as officially farming and in receipt of farm payments. The survey is being undertaken with the collaboration of Mary Curtin, a PhD scholar at the University of Limerick who is currently examining female farm ownership from a legal, financial, social and cultural standpoint. Camp Community Council provide lighting on the walking track at the Community Field from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m, to facilitate participation in this Challenge. THE JANUARY FAIR Camp January Fair held on January 26th was a big event one time. In bygone days, it was a cattle and sheep fair.It was the first Fair of the year, followed by 4 more fairs including Lord Ventrys Auction in August and the September Fair which still survives to this present day. Many joyful events coincide with Camp Fair including the birth of 2 little girls, Mairead Crean, Knockgloss Beg first saw the light of day on a January Fair night and up the road in Knockglossmore, Kate O Donnell was born on 26th January one year apart. Happy birthday ladies, may you always enjoy your Camp Fair Day birthdays and may your children, Adam, Clara and Julliette bring the stories of Camp Fair down another generation. We have some sad memories too and on the night of the January Fair in 1917, Jack Murphy from Gleann na nGealt lost his life on the way home from the fair in his horse and cart. The horse bolted and the cart and a load of sand,
His wife Ellie was carrying their daughter Peig who was born posthumously a few months after her fathers death. R.I.P. The family always intended marking the spot where Jack lost his life and so it was 101 years later in 2018 on the eve of the September Fair that Jack Murphys great grandson John Herlihy of Atlantic Headstones Kerry erected a beautifully engraved memorial plaque at the turn of the road where the accident occurred. Fr. Gerry Keane PP officiated and the event was attended by the extended Murphy family, among them Jacks Great Great Grandson, Rian Herlihy and all the neighbours. And so another January Fair is remembered and recalled in the village of Camp. BON VOYAGE Bon Voyage to Eamonn Hickson, Lougher, Annascaul who is leaving for Canada very soon. The Annascaul footballer and award winning Journalist, Radio Kerry Presenter and Producer is a huge loss to the County. OBITUARY Beatrice Dowling (née Keane) Stradbally, Castlegregory and Aughacasla passed away peacefully, on 25th January. A lovely lady, Beatrice had many friends in the community, living to a great old age. In later years she was a regular at the Active Retired meals and activities in Castlegregory and Camp. She will be dearly missed by all. Now reunited with her loving husband Tom and her brothers Murty, Michael and John.

understandings of the key elements of Sustainable Tourism as they relate to us here on the Dingle Peninsula. It is hoped to give us all a greater understanding of what it means to be a sustainable tourism destination and to help us all, both hospitality and community, to play our part in Climate Action. So, what does Sustainable Tourism mean - "Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities". (United Nations World Tourism Organisation, 2021) “Sustainable tourism development guidelines and management practices are applicable to all forms of tourism in all types of destinations, including mass tourism and the various niche tourism segments. Sustainability principles refer to the environmental, economic, and socio-cultural aspects of tourism development, and a suitable balance must be established between these three dimensions to guarantee its long-term sustainability. Thus, sustainable tourism should: • Make optimal use of environmental resources that constitute a key element in tourism development, maintaining essential ecological processes and helping to conserve natural heritage and biodiversity. • Respect the socio-cultural authenticity of host communities, conserve their built and living cultural heritage and traditional values, and contribute to inter-cultural understanding and tolerance. • Ensure viable, long-term economic operations, providing socio-economic benefits to all stakeholders that are fairly distributed, including stable employment and income-earning opportunities and social services to host communities, and contributing to poverty alleviation. Sustainable tourism development requires the informed participation of all relevant stakeholders, as well as strong political leadership to ensure wide participation and consensus building. Achieving sustainable tourism is a continuous process and it requires constant monitoring of impacts, introducing the necessary preventive and/or corrective measures whenever necessary. Sustainable tourism should also maintain a high level of tourist satisfaction and ensure a meaningful experience to the tourists, raising their awareness about sustainability issues and promoting sustainable tourism practices amongst them,” (UNWTO, 2021). In the next article, we will look at Responsible Tourism and what it means and how we represent it here on the Dingle Peninsula already and how we can find ways to do things better. Pound Keeper and Stocking Knitter
Ted Creedon The 1901 Census in West Kerry, which was taken on Sunday, 31 March, has no record of dentists, barbers, hairdressers or undertakers living and working in the area. Funeral Servant.
Eugene O’Sullivan, 47, his wife Bridget, 45, and their three daughters were the only family living in the townland of Gortanora, Dingle, according to the 1901 census. Eugene’s occupation was ‘Pound Keeper’. Stray animals were kept in the pound where they were fed and watered until their owners could be traced and a fee paid for their release. The pound was situated at what is now, and was then, the entrance to the cattle market off Spa Road. Bridget O’Sullivan’s occupation was ‘Stocking Knitter’ – the only person to declare that in the West Kerry census. Eugene signed the census form and added the address as ‘Gortanora Market, Dingle,’
However, there is one record of a ‘Funeral Servant’. Her name was Ellen Riordan, 17, and she was a resident in the townland of Gurteen, near Annascaul. The other occupants of the house were Church of Ireland clergyman Patrick Sweeney and his wife, also Ellen. It’s doubtful if the occupation of a ‘funeral servant’ was a full-time one and she probably filled the position of domestic servant also.

Her religion is recorded as ‘Church of Rome’ but when transcribed to the printed form she was recorded as ‘Church of Ireland’. There are many errors in the transcribed versions of the original hand-written 1901 census forms.
George Kavanagh, 62, from Caheratrant declared he was a ‘Violinist’.
Gamekeepers While the focus of these articles up to now has been on one-off occupations recorded in the census in West Kerry the only position of ‘Gamekeeper’ in the census was held by father and son Patrick Sugrue, 47, and his son Patrick, 18, in Burnham East. Young Patrick became better known as Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha, author of Jimín Mháire Thaidhg. His brother Micheál, also a writer, was nine months old in March 1901. Professor of Music One unexpected occupation recorded in West Kerry in 1901 is that of Daniel Hession, 60, whose profession was ‘Professor of Music’. He was a church organist and a lodger in the home of James and Mary Griffin in Quay Street, Dingle.
Apart from Professor Hession above, only two local people declared their occupations as musicians in West Kerry. Cornelius Kennedy, 24, from Ballydavid was a ‘Fiddler’. Sadly, the final column on the census form records that he was ‘Blind’. Trooper Kerry-born Francis MacGillicuddy, 42, was a visitor in a house in Cloghane, Ventry, on census night 1901. He declared his occupation as ‘Trooper, South African Constabulary’. The Constabulary (SAC) was a paramilitary force set up by the British in 1900 to control the Boers following the Second Boer War.

According to family records he was also a professor of music in Galway. He must have been well known because he was invited to ‘open’ a newly installed organ in St Mary’s Church, Dingle, at Christmas in 1894. However, his arrival was delayed and the opening was performed on the Feast of the Epiphany, 1895. While his age is stated as 60 in the census, family records give his year of birth as 1836 which makes him at least 64 in March 1901. And why was he in Dingle on 31 March? On holidays? Maybe he was a guest organist in St. Mary’s for the following week - Easter week. He died in 1904. Traveller, Colonial Australia Thomas Wren, 60, was recorded as a resident of a house in the townland of Coumlanders. He gave his occupation as ‘Traveller’ and added, in small lettering, ‘Colonial Australia’. His sister, Johanna Thomas, 50, a widow, was head of the household. It would be interesting to know why he recorded that ‘occupation’ which leaves it wide open to speculation.

Mineral Water Manufacturers Another surprising and one-off entry in the 1901 census is that of Patrick Kavanagh, 25, and his brother Maurice, 18, of Cantra (Census spelling) who declared their occupations as ‘Mineral Water Manufacturers’. Was their business based in the area or did they work away from home? They came from a very large family. Their parents, Maurice and Bridget, had seven sons and three daughters. Maurice was a tailor and his son John was Parish Clerk. Someone reading this may have more information on the two brothers.

Green Curry, Lentil and Sweet Potato Soup By Mark Murphy,Dingle Cookery School Method
to season. Add chopped coriander to serve.
Heat a pot over low to medium heat. Add a little oil and add the shallot and garlic. Let this cook slowly for about five minutes. Add the ginger and lemongrass and let this cook slowly for a few minutes. Stir in the Green curry paste and cook it for about 2-3 minutes. Add in the lentils and sweet potato and stock. Simmer this for about 2025 minutes. Check to make sure the lentils are cooked but still have a little bite to them. The sweet potato should be cooked at this stage too.

A creamy and fragrant soup. This soup is so pleasing to make. Start slowly and your kitchen will fill with the comforting aroma of onions and garlic as they soften. Once the ginger and lemongrass the scents will change to citrus. It is important to cook the curry paste for a few minutes to open and release all of the flavours. The mild pepper and creamy flavour of the lentils and the sugars of the sweet potato are the reasons that these two always work. The key to knowing when this soup is almost ready, is when you taste the lentils and there is a slight bite to them. Bring this all together with the richness of the coconut milk (go for the full fat one) and season with a little Thai fish sauce (available in all shops). I hope you enjoy cooking this as much as everyone will when they taste it. Ingredients 1 shallot, diced 2 cloves of garlic

Film Review: Belfast Tom Ó Neachtain Belfast is a new semiautobiographical film from writer/director Kenneth Branagh. It follows the ups-anddowns of a workingclass family living in 1960s Belfast, just as The Troubles in Northern-Ireland begin to escalate. At this point in his illustrious career, Branagh’s decision to make a small-scale, personal film was a wise one - it seems to be paying off. This film has swept the award circuits, and has serious Oscar-buzz behind it. This makes Belfast a welcome return to form for the director, who has had more misses than

hits behind the camera in recent years. Branagh has confirmed that he based this story on his own childhood experiences, and judging by the final product, he has gone to painstaking detail to bring what he remembers of this period to life. The honesty in this approach makes the character interactions soar, as they feel plucked straight out of Branagh’s own childhood. The same goes for the costumes and set-design, each feeling detailed and era-appropriate. Also, this film was shot in beautiful black and white, which adds an extra layer of visual splendour to the piece, and makes this one of the best looking smallerbudget films in recent memory. Branagh’s talent for adding creative visual flourishes is present here, imbuing the smallest moment or character exchange with weight and poignance. The large cast are all on form, giving the film a genuine warmth and authenticity, with Ciarán Hinds being the easy stand-out. Most of Belfast’s award nods
have been directed towards the cast, and it’s not very difficult to see why. Sadly, the story isn’t always on par with the film’s visuals and characterisation. Its episodic structure won’t be for everyone, and the film lacks any real dramatic weight until the final-act. Many of the plotlines introduced early-on are forgotten by the end, the film occasionally feels too breezy for its own good. Belfast is a heartfelt and authentic depiction of childhood, and although aimless in parts, it more than makes up for this with a great cast and Branagh’s eye-catching direction. EVERY STEP COUNTS CHALLENGE: Annascaul GAA and Coiste na nOg is taking part in this year’s challenge, this is an opportunity for us to get healthy and for the club to win prizes. The challenge runs until 23 February, every step counts, if you prefer to walk in the evening, the track at Camp Community Field will be lit up from 6:30 to 8:30 each evening until 23rd February. VOLUNTEERS: We are seeking volunteers to help run our club and bring new ideas for the future.
