Ironing out a Few Fascinating Facts about the Celtic Curse! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

For a while there has been a raging debate in genetics as to whether Hereditary Haemochromastosis is a Celtic thing or was it introduced to the Celts by Viking invaders and other colonizers. Hereditary haemochromatosis (HH) is a genetic disease that alters the body's ability to regulate iron absorption, resulting in excessive iron building up in cells overtime. What we do know is that the genetic variant (a glitch in our genetic coding) responsible for HH, just identified in 1996 as C282Y, only occurred after our ancestors migrated from Central Africa to Northern and Central Europe. Up until then, there is no evidence that HH was in our genes. We also know that countries with the highest prevalence for HH around the North Sea and Western Europe, lie in the path of the once-marauding Vikings, which suggest that the Viking travel had something to do with introducing the defective gene into populations. However, the timeline does not fully explain how the gene mutation is present in Celtic Irish ancestral remains from Rathlin Island dating back to 3000 years before the Vikings hit our shores. And so the debate goes on! The Irish have the highest frequency of C282Y mutation in the world, and more specifically in the male population of Connaught.

every 83 people predisposed to HH, yet most people are only diagnosed between the ages of 30 and 50 years when symptoms of iron overload become apparent. Women tend to be diagnosed later due to blood loss through menstruation and pregnancy. Symptoms include chronic pain, joint pain, loss of libido, diabetes, enlarged liver and irregular heartbeat. Iron deposits affect the liver, heart, pancreas, endocrine glands and joints leading to impaired function and eventually disease or organ failure. Treatment involves regular blood-letting (phlebotomy). Initially, treatment may be required weekly or bi-weekly but once safe iron levels are established, may only be needed a few times per year, with regular monitoring by your GP/healthcare providers. Along with phlebotomy, it is a good idea to adopt a dietary protocol to manage Haemochromatosis and to protect organs from the free radical damage caused by excess iron levels. A wholefood, mainly plant-based diet full of colour, antioxidants and unprocessed foods will offer the best protection in the long run. Limit iron-rich foods in the diet, especially heme-iron found in animal meats and offal. Heme-iron is more bioavailable in the human body - it is easier to absorb than non-heme iron. Non-heme iron is a type of iron found mostly in plant foods. Non-heme iron is more difficult to absorb. Some vegetables considered high in iron (nonheme) such as spinach, chard, black beans and green lentils may be eaten in moderation as the phytates and fibre present in these foods inhibit iron absorption. Wholegrains too can be eaten for the same reason. The increased fibre intake, from a plant-based diet can bind with excess iron for elimination and inhibit the absorption of iron from food. Other foods that inhibit iron absorption include tannins in black tea, calcium-rich foods and healthy fats. Seek advice about using psyllium husk, calcium and any other supplements to minimize iron

absorption, as you may well be inhibiting the absorption of other minerals and vital nutrients. Limit or avoid alcohol as it increases the uptake of iron and also may contain iron. Alcohol is an added burden to the liver which is one of the organs most affected by iron-overload in HH. Watch out for “fortified” and “enriched” cereals, breads, flour and other foods. Fortification is added to refined grain products – keep ingredients very natural and as whole as possible to avoid unnecessary addition of iron and vitamin C to everyday foods. Such as bread and cereals. Likewise, be wary of supplements which may contain iron and/or vitamin C. Vitamin C rich foods should not be eaten with meat dishes as it increases iron absorption. Yet, vitamin C is needed for many other functions and must not be completely avoided. Use iron-free cookware, ceramic is best but stainless steel is a handier option for most cooking. While HH is still considered a curse, particularly to those who are affected, it is part of who we are and more than likely helped us survive through challenging times in our past. Modern treatment options along with the advances in genetics will make it less of a curse in the future. There is a good possibility that for generations to come, the Celtic-ness of Haemachromatosis will go from threat to trait much like the pale skin and freckles! Farming News Louis Murchan TAMS FARM SAFETY TRAINING RESUMES Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon T.D. has confirmed the resumption of in-person farm safety training for successful applicants under the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation Scheme (TAMS II). The completion of this training is part of the requirements to draw down payments for approved works that have been completed under the scheme. To facilitate the submission of Farm Safety Code of Practice (COP) training certificates and in line with the removal of Covid Restrictions, this training will resume in-person from 1 March next. As an interim measure, the facility to carry out the course on an online basis will also remain in place until 1 July 2022 on an exceptional basis for participants who cannot attend for covid reasons. All courses will be carried out in line with the Health and Safety Authority public health guidance available at the time. These arrangements will be reviewed at the end of June. All trainers delivering the Farm Safety Code of Practice (COP) training required for TAMS must have completed the updated training on the TAMSII COP course provided by the Health and Safety Authority. PARASITE CONTROL STRATEGY FOR CATTLE AND SHEEP FARMERS A Parasite Control Strategy for Cattle and Sheep Farmers has been establish under the existing Targeted Advisory Service for Animal Health (TASAH) to support farmers in their response to the anti-parasitic challenge. TASAH funding will provide for a farm visit and veterinary consultation, free of charge to the farmer, to advise on parasite control by a trained veterinary practitioner, to include faecal egg sampling and interpretation. Farmers will receive individual farm specific parasite control recommendations from the veterinarian visit. As anti-parasitic medicines may only be supplied on foot of a veterinary prescription from June this year, where such products are required, the consulting veterinarian can provide a prescription at that time. DEROGATION FARMERS NEED TO PREPARE 2021 FERTILISER ACCOUNTS Farmers who applied for a Nitrates Derogation in 2021 are reminded they need to prepare 2021 fertiliser Accounts. The relevant form is now available online from the DAFM website. The closing date for submission of the fertiliser accounts will be 14th April 2022. DAFM advises 2021 Derogation applicants to contact their agricultural advisor as soon as possible regarding preparation of these Fertiliser Accounts. Ireland’s proposed new Nitrates Action Programme is currently under review with the European Commission and is not yet finalised. A decision from the European Commission on Ireland’s Nitrates Action Programme is expected in mid-March. Considering this, the DAFM has confirmed that, subject to the new Nitrates Action Programme being approved, the 2022 Nitrates Derogation will open for applications in mid-March and the normal closing date will be extended to 14th April 2022. Completed Fertiliser Accounts for 2021 will be able to be submitted on-line once that system opens. End of Year Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P Statements) for January to December 2021 (cattle only) are also now available to view on the Department’s agfood online system. HOW UKRAINE WAR WILL IMPACT ITS FARMING - AND OURS Unless your head has been firmly stuck in the sand for the past seven days, you will be well aware of the illegal invasion of The Ukraine, last week. This is a terrible Act of Terror and of War. There are absolutely no circumstances where it can be justified. It is wrong. The immediate consequences are the destruction of lives, and the homes of those people whose lives are being destroyed. A country and it's economy are also being destroyed. But so are the economies (or part of…) of other countries, and the economic effect will be felt Europe-wide, and particularly in Ireland. Agriculture, our primary industry will be hit hard, with even higher prices being asked for oil, fuel, fertilizer and other farm inputs. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will have serious knock-on effects that could be "painful" for Europe’s farmers and the broader food system. The EU's heavily subsidized farming system is an exporting powerhouse, but 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

livelihoods could be threatened because much of the EU's meat and dairy industry relies on imported feed crops from Ukraine, and the bloc is also hooked on Russian gas and fertilizers. Russia and Ukraine jointly account for more than 30 percent of the world’s trade in wheat and barley, 17 percent of maize/corn and over 50 percent of sunflower oil, seeds and cakes for feeding animals — but all Ukrainian exports from the major trade route via the Black Sea ports have stopped because of the war. Disruption of this trade has and will further result in the proverbial “circling of the wagons”, and protectionist policy being implemented to protect agriculture. Many in the EU have already stressed the need to strengthen internal food security, given that EU food production is heavily dependent on imported fertilizers, natural gas and animal feed. Agri-food trade with Russia has already massively slumped in recent years after Moscow imposed an embargo on many EU foodstuffs in response to sanctions the EU slapped on Russia after its annexation of Crimea in 2014. Despite the embargo, Russia remains Europe's sixth-largest trade partner in terms of value when it comes to buying EU agri-food goods. But the EU's fresh sanctions on Russia will likely disrupt EU exports of luxury foodstuffs, like wines, spirits and chocolates, and disincentivize Russia from doing trade of any kind, Scannell said. From a statistical point of view, the impact of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces will result in turmoil, the ripples of which are being felt globally, and will greatly effect grass production and therefore beef and lamb output in Ireland. Ukraine is Europe’s biggest country apart from Russia, occupying a land area seven times the size of Ireland, at a whopping 603,000 square km. According to the World Bank, 56% of the land base in Ukraine is arable land, compared to just 6.5% in Ireland, 25% in the UK and 33% in France. The scale of crop production in Ukraine poses the country as a truly massive exporter, with 9.4bn of cereal exported in the year 2020. Having such a quantity of fertile soils has led to Ukraine gaining the title of being the breadbasket of Europe (Rhodesia’s equivalent in Africa, in the 1960’s and 70’s) producing about 12% of global exports of wheat. Ukraine produces around 29.5 million tonnes of maize, exporting around 24 million tonnes. From an Irish perspective, 27% of maize feed imports originate from Ukraine amounting to a total value of about €73m per annum. Ukraine also supplied 57% of Italy’s maize requirements and 26% of Germany’s maize requirements. So, what are the impacts likely to be for Irish farmers and the public in general? Disruption to the planting season in Ukraine is highly likely. Apart from the conflict itself, it is likely that fuel shortages, damage to infrastructure, displacement of people along with shortages of finance and inability to access finance and supply chain issues will cripple the planting season. The knock-on effect to an already overheated global cereal market has already sent world prices to record highs - an effect that’s likely to be felt out into the medium term. As countries such as Ireland, Germany and Italy seek to source grain from other sources the upward pressure on prices will continue. The shortfall in the production of higher-grade milling wheat could translate into greater price increases for that product with no alternatives available. Off the back of record EU inflation figures, the prospect of food price hikes and energy price hikes from disruption arising within Ukraine will erode household incomes even further. From a European perspective, the shocking nature of how events have unfolded is likely to cause a major shift in the policy direction of the EU. From an Irish farming perspective, our maize imports from Ukraine can be replaced, but given that cereal prices could escalate higher than existing levels, farmers should, before our own planting season gets underway, consider whether Irish-produced crops such as maize, silage, beet and whole-crop wheat/barley or triticale or home-saved grains could operate as a hedge against significant rises in ration costs for the coming winter. Given the higher level of silage stocks on farms at this time of year compared to usual, farmers may also wish to strategically aim for higher quality silage at the calculated risk of forfeiting bulk with a view to reducing the amount of supplementation needed. For farmers whose land isn’t suitable for alternative cropping, consider doing deals with contractors or tillage farmers. From an energy perspective, the price of coal, gas and oil have also increased over the past week. Coal reached record prices on Monday last rising more than 20% over the past week Whilst much is made of the gas supplies to Europe, of which Russian accounts for 41% of the supplies, coal and oil are also significant imports for the EU. According to the EU, for the

year 2019 27% of the EU’s import of crude oil came from Russia, whilst 47% of coal imports into the EU came from Russia. As a hedging strategy, farmers could consider investing or upgrading on-farm generators, along with keeping a reserve of diesel for such purposes in a dedicated bowser, or installing PV with decent battery storage. For the coming season our grass-based system will stand to us well, how we fare out in the medium term remains very much up in the air. So, you see, even though the conflict is over 2,000 miles away, and will not physically affect us here in Ireland, it will affect us other ways, and we therefore need to react, and to take sides, and to support what is right.

Camp Notes

Well done to Castlegregory/Annascaul Ladies who won the Páidi Ó Sé Junior Shield beating Dingle on Saturday last.

The death of Breandán Murphy of Clondalkin, Co. Dublin, Straffan Co. Kildare, and formerly Ard Na Lí, Tralee, Co. Kerry, peacefully on 16th February 2022, beloved son of Joan and the late Seamus and dear brother of Colm, Brid, Cormac and Rónán. Sadly missed by his loving family, his nephews, nieces, uncle, aunts, brother-in-law Roger, sisters-in-law Claire, Niamh and Breffini, Mossie, Mary and the extended Hanifin family, relatives and many friends.

Congratulations to Pádraig Ó Sé and Coiste Comórtas Páidi Ó Sé and to all the teams who participated from near and far. A great community event, well done all.

Breandán is son of the late Séamus Murphy, former Kerry footballer and late of Garrahies Camp and nephew of Anne Maloney Murphy who still resides in the old homestead in Camp.

Another local hospitality icon was lost to Dingle with the passing of ‘Oliver Mac’. The stories abound of his wonderful colourful character, who not only achieved in making Dick Mack’s famous, but also made St. Mary’s famous with his uncanny talent for entertaining signage! From the 1901 Census in West Kerry Ted Creedon We’ll continue with extracts relating to unusual, unfamiliar or singular occupations recorded in the 1901 Census in West Kerry which was taken on 31 March. Some people recorded information in the ‘Occupations’ column of the census form which carry their own messages. Mining Assayer John Sheehy, 24, was a visitor to his family home at Ballintaggart, Dingle. His occupation was ‘Mining Assayer’. According to family history he left Ireland at the age of 18 and sailed to Hobart in Tasmania. It’s believed he later moved to Alaska where he worked as an assayer in a mining town. It’s not known what metals were being mined there, whether gold, silver, copper etc: but his work involved chemical analysis of the materials being brought in to the assayer’s office for identification with prospectors hoping to strike it rich. Horse Shoer Patrick Wallace, 25, from Cloghane, Ventry, gave his profession as ‘Horse Shoer’ and was the only person to record that occupation in the 1901 census in West Kerry. Normally written as one word ‘horseshoer’, the occupation is self-explanatory but was he also a blacksmith or did he work as horseshoer, or farrier, with a blacksmith? Perhaps he worked for blacksmith John Barry, 24, whose forge was a short distance away at Cloosmore. Auctioneer Timothy Galvin, 48, was a resident in John Street and recorded his occupation as ‘Auctioneer’ – the only one discovered in the census

only one recorded in West Kerry on that date. He was a member of the Church of Ireland. Ploughman Patrick Foley, 31, was an occupant of a house in Kilfarnogue, Ventry. His recorded occupation was ‘Ploughman’. The six servants in the house had various duties, either domestic or agricultural. Thomas Adams, 38, who was unmarried on the date of the census, was head of the household. Hotel Keepers John Benner, 31 and unmarried, recorded his occupation as ‘Hotel Keeper’ on Main Street, Dingle. Mary Lee, 26 and unmarried, declared the same occupation. Lee’s Hotel was also on Main Street – the building is now the Allied Irish Bank. Update on John Brick –‘Sea Diver’ In the last issue Kevin Russell from Cloghane suggested that John Brick, who gave his occupation as ‘Sea Diver’ in the 1901 Census, may have been involved in salvaging copper ore from the Port Yarrock which was wrecked in Brandon Bay in 1894. John was born over 150 years ago and imagine the surprise this writer got when a reader rang to say they knew John Brick. The caller was Sheila Mulcahy, retired teacher at Meanscoil an Leith-Triúigh. She remembered John Brick who visited her home every Sunday when she was a young girl. “He was a lovely man, kind and generous and he always brought an apple or an orange on his visits. He worked with a diver during the salvage operation on the Port Yarrock who trained him to become an expert diver” Sheila said. The attached photo of John Brick is from Sheila’s book "A Gallant Barque - the story of the Port Yarrock" , published in 1999.

One of them, Edward Lawlor, 16, is named as a ‘General Farm Servant’ on the census form. American Army Pensioner While the Old Age Pension was not introduced in Ireland until 1909 some people were on pensions following police or military service. One such man was Thomas Fitzgerald, 70, who was resident in a house in Acres, near Annascaul, in 1901. He was an ‘American Army Pensioner’. Born around 1830 he may have served in the Union or Confederate armies during the American Civil War 1861 – 1865. He was the uncle of the householder John Thomas, 45, a farmer. Land Surveyor Thomas Williams, 39, was a resident in Dykegate Lane and declared his occupation to be ‘Land Surveyor’, one of only two people to record that profession in the census in West Kerry. His work involved determining the boundary of land or property, providing maps etc. He was born in England. Another man whose occupation was ‘Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor’ was Michael Quinlan, 61, resident of a house in Ballyknockane, Camp. School Monitor The occupation of a young Kinard East student was entered as ‘ Scholar, Monitor in N-Sch’ (National School). His name was Thomas Ashe, 15, and he was destined to become one of Ireland’s most revered patriots. The school was located close to the church in Lispole. School monitors continued their studies in national school for several years beyond the normal leaving age in those days, especially if a student intended becoming a teacher. Thomas Ashe entered the De La Salle Teacher Training College in Waterford in 1905 and three years later began his teaching career in Corduff National School in Lusk, County Dublin. The rest, as they say, is history. Irish Language Inspector Widower John Jordan, 66, was the only resident of a house in Cantra on census night in 1901. His occupation was ‘Irish Language Inspector’, the

As our club is in a remote rural area, and several of the other teams we visit are as well, we felt that having this defibrillator as a back up just in case will be a huge advantage in case of emergency. Probably the juiciest chicken you will ever eat! After cooking this you will ask yourself why we don’t cook pot roasts more often. Cooking a larger piece of meat or a whole chicken in a casserole pot with some liquid and covered with a lid will make it more tender and more succulent. When it comes out of the oven and you lift the lid, the aromas of cooked chicken and vegetables cooked in white wine will make you want to dig in straight away. As the chicken cooks in the covered pot, it will make it own chicken stock. This along with the wine will steam and braise the meat and vegetables as it cooks, everything you serve from the pot will be juicy and full of comforting flavours. Ingredients oil 1 whole chicken knob of butter

Heat a casserole pot over a medium to high heat. Once hot, add a little oil and then add the chicken. Allow the chicken to brown on all sides. Once it is brown remove the chicken, add some more oil and some butter add the vegetables and thyme. Keep the heat high and allow them to take a brown colour. Stir

Small Changes: Peat

emissions because disturbed bogs release their carbon stores while the burning of peat contributes further to emissions. This wasn’t known in 1935 when the government established the Turf Development Board (succeeded by Bord na Móna in 1946) to reduce dependence on fuel imports and provide jobs. The most serious impacts of the drainage and cutting of hundreds of acres of turf has been on midlands raised bogs. Mechanised cutting accounts for 24% of the loss of these ecosystems while hand peat cutting accounts for 64% loss of raised bog systems. Once the value of these ecosystems was realised in the late 1990s and early 2000’s, the government designated 53 raised bogs as SACs and a further 75 as NHAs. Unfortunately they did so without consulting the tens of thousands of landowners who retained rights to cut turf. Rather than acquire control of turf cutting areas through compensation and just transition initiatives, the government put a derogation in place which essentially allowed turf cutting on sites they had designated as important for conservation. Even though the derogation deadline has now passed, turf cutting still continues while cases are being taken against Ireland for infringements of EU law.

Fen, raised bog, blanket bog and their more exotic sounding relations palsa, pocasins and tropical swamp forests are all forms of peatland. These are terrestrial wetland ecosystems in which waterlogged conditions prevent plant material from fully decomposing. In addition to the unique biodiversity they support, peatlands provide many ecological services such as preventing flooding and the filtration of fresh water. It is, however, their function as a carbon sink that is most celebrated. Usually, when plants die they rot, releasing their carbon back into the soil or atmosphere. As dead plants in a peatland cannot fully decompose their carbon remains locked in, so even though peatlands make up less than 3% of all land on the planet, they store twice as much carbon as all the world’s forests combined (over 30% of global land area). These attributes have led to peatlands being described as ‘natures champion against climate change’. Peatlands, in the form of fens, blanket bog and raised bog, account for 17 % of the land surface in the Republic of Ireland. Fens usually occur at lake edges or shallow water fed basins. Raised bogs are usually formed in shallow basins and floodplains of rivers with impeded drainage and are mostly confined to the country’s midlands (although a number of raised bogs are found in North Kerry), while blanket bogs are mostly confined to oceanic areas where there is almost constant rainfall (no prizes for guessing the predominant bog type in Kerry). Bogs below 200m OD are described as Atlantic blanket bog and bogs over this height are described as mountainous blanket bog. While bogs differ in their distribution, development structure and vegetation, a common component of most peatlands are Sphagnum mosses. These species of moss, sometimes known as the bog builders, can hold up to 26 times their own weight in water which is how the habitat is maintained in a waterlogged condition. In addition, they acidify their surroundings and produce an antibiotic called sphagnol which keeps bacterial action at a very low level (Sphagnum has long been used in healthcare dressings). The low rate of decay means that bogs are natural time capsules, preserving everything from ancient forests, human bodies and food to pollen, ash and macro and microfauna. Peat cores taken from bogs allow scientists to build up a historical profiles of past environments, climate change, vegetation and human activity from the past 9000 years in Ireland. All Irish bogs are natural habitats of prime significance containing rare flora and fauna. They are unique among the peatlands of Europe (Ireland contains half of the intact raised bog systems remaining in Europe) and have considerable conservation value aside from their importance from a climate perspective. They are protected habitats under European and Irish law with representative samples designated as Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) and Natural Heritage Areas (NHAs). While it must be acknowledged that their importance as ecosystems has not always been known, government policies since the foundation of the state to the present day have supported the mismanagement of these resources. Before peat was recognised as the best carbon sink it was a popular energy source especially in Ireland. It burns hotter than wood and is easier to extract than coal and oil, all of which was/is in limited supply in Ireland anyway. Agricultural practices have also had a huge detrimental impact on bogs. Almost all fens have been altered by reclamation and many smaller peatlands have been drained and fertilised for use in grassland farming. Grazing of uplands has happened since Neolithic times but the past 100 years has seen massive increases in the number of animals on our hills. Again, this is mostly due to agricultural policies, the introduction of EU headage schemes and of course the global demand for cheap food. Under conditions of overgrazing, the integrity of blanket bog vegetation is destroyed, leading to a reduction in biodiversity, a reduction in cover and the creation of bare peat ground. In severe cases peat erosion leads to the formation of a peat slurry which pollutes rivers. In addition to the damage caused by overgrazing by animals is the damage caused by tourist trampling on Atlantic and mountainous bogs. The increase in outdoor activities, especially since the pandemic, has seen record numbers of people walk and hike on these sensitive ecosystems. Lack of amenity management has seen reductions in the occurrence and frequency of some bog species, the introduction of non-native plant species and peat degradation comparable to the effects of overgrazing in the most severely impacted areas. Ten percent of all peat extracted in Ireland has historically been harvested for horticultural use. The industry is worth almost €500 million to the economy. There has been a lot of media coverage about peat shortfalls and imported peat since a 2019 court ruling which requires planning permission and a licence for peat to be extracted from areas larger than 30ha (a ruling which has put a lot of pressure on smaller bogs). The fact that in 2021 ten times the amount of peat required for the domestic horticultural market was exported out of Ireland seems to be ignored as is the fact that there has been no reduction in the supply of peat products to amenity gardeners (retail market). Planting of commercial forestry, mismanaged and unskilled burning and windfarms can also have detrimental effects on peatlands. It is difficult to appreciate an ecosystem that is relatively rare worldwide when it is quite common in Ireland. Moreover when our cultural heritage and emotional attachment with bogs is associated with the extraction and burning of turf and the prevailing mind-set has been that peatlands are worthless marginal land. The drive to rewet and restore peatlands currently in agricultural use ( EU target of 70% restoration with at least 50% of that rewetted) goes against a lifetime of instruction to drain and ‘improve’ land for Irish farmers. If conservation and restoration goals are to be realised in this country then there needs to be proper consultation with landowners and a commitment to financially reward them for their conservation and carbon capture services. There also needs to be a change in how we view and assess the value of peatlands and the products derived from them and for this there are measures that individuals can take. A commitment to switch energy sources or at least reduce the amount of turf burnt could be a starting point. The use of peat free alternatives for gardening is another. Home composting is an excellent way to create growing medium for gardens with the bonus of reducing waste at the same time. Finally, leave no trace when out walking, trail running or hiking on blanket bogs and stick to public tracks to reduce your impact.

Blennerville Windmill and Dingle Town Park We’re thrilled that the Town and Village Renewal Scheme has provided valuable funding on the Peninsula. Blennerville Windmill was awarded €500,000 to develop a community bakery and bakery school. Dingle Town Park has received nearly €100,000 in order to become a more accessible recreational space.

We’ve received great financial support from this initiative recently which has helped us to improve, for example, our meeting room facilities in the Cooleen office. We now have extra large monitors that allow for interactive video conferencing. A special 360-degree video camera captures the person speaking in the room and shares this with those who can’t attend the meeting in person. (If you think this facility could be helpful for your community organisation, get in touch).

The Department for Rural and Community Development is continuing their support of Remote Working facilities into 2022, with Minister Heather Humphreys recently announcing another €5 million for Hubs across the country. Dream Campervan Couple Return Draw funds vital roof repairs at Dingle childcare centre Over 9,600 tickets sold for draw A DINGLE couple is planning plenty of holidays and weekends away in their brand new campervan won in a draw for a local childcare facility. Frank and Noreen Greaney collected their luxury four-berth Compass Avantgarde 150, worth €74,000, in Donegal last week and brought it home to Garfinny. Retired plumber Frank says it drives like a dream and they can’t wait to take it on its first official road trip. He said: “It’s a brilliant van and it drives really well and is very comfortable. It has everything you could imagine - indoor toilet, shower, kitchen with over three-ring cooker, oven, fridge-freezer and even a microwave.” The 24-feet long vehicle comfortably sleeps four and comes with an extended island bed, flanked by spacious wardrobes, a kitchen and a bright and comfortable living space along with a front lounge that converts into a second double bed with foldaway Aguti travel seats. It also offers fantastic drive performance with its Peugeot Boxer 2.2 140 Bhp Tdi Turbo Diesel for better fuel efficiency with a six-speed gearbox and Euro 6.2 engine with reduced emissions. The Greaneys drove their dream campervan to Áiseanna na hÓige in Dingle on Monday to show it off and say thank you to the organisers of the draw that was held in October.

Dingle native Siobhán O'Connor presents a cheque for €1,130 to Pieta House. Siobhán works as a secondary school teacher in Cork city and has always had an interest in Art. During the pandemic she found time to pick up a paintbrush again and made an instagram page (@shivs.creations) to display her artwork.. For the last two years she has used her art in a positive way by creating Christmas cards and giving 20% of all sales to Pieta. She also organised a Christmas Swim this year in Doonshean beach to raise some extra funds for the charity! Every €1000 helps pay for 20 sessions with a counsellor.

As the days lengthen there are signs of hope and new life in the world of nature. Thankfully when it comes to Covid 19 it seems that there are many reasons to be hopeful. As we look back on the past two years we remember in thought and prayer those who have died and those who were left to grieve the loss of a loved one without the usual supports of the wider community. We remember also the Care Professionals at all levels who were at the front line and those in authority who took difficult and often unpopular decisions to care for us. It will take many years to appreciate the true effect of Covid 19. In the short term we know that our lives were changed and for many it was a chance to identify and appreciate what is important in life. Many people got involved with volunteering and made a difference in their communities. Most groups are seeking volunteers to help them in their work. The parish is also in need of volunteers in many areas from Readers, Eucharistic Ministers to Church Cleaners and deliver the correspondence to each home of the parish. We thank those who are engaged in any level with the life of the parish and encourage others to consider getting involved. People across the Diocese of Kerry are being invited to take part in a Synodal listening process. In the next few weeks, in different ways, you will be invited to share your experience of being part of the Church community. Together with Pope Francis, we want to hear from as many people as possible. The lived experience of every person is welcome and needed. Frank and Noreen bought their winning ticket outside Garvey’s SuperValu in July from a parent, whose child attends the centre. Theirs was one of 9,624 tickets sold - 20% of which were bought locally raising almost €80,000 for the not-for-profit facility that provides quality and affordable childcare services through the medium of Irish in Dingle. Áiseanna na hÓige caters for 120 children daily, provides a bus service to and from school and even a hot meal. It also provides vital family support services for families needed extra help and guidance. The proceeds from the draw will go towards repairing the roof of the centre. The work is due to start in April and will take about three weeks to complete. Manager of Áiseanna na hÓige, Fiona Nic Gearailt, paid tribute to the local community for its support and thanked those who had bought tickets for the draw. She said: “Táimid fíor buíoch as an dtacaíocht ar fad a fuaireamar i rith an tiomsaitheoir airgid, go háirithe ónatuismitheorí, an foireann oibre agus gach duine a dhíol ticeadí dúinn nó a cheannaigh ticéad. The kids will make a lot of use of it too. We’re absolutely delighted. It’s a brilliant thing,” Frank said.

A thrilling new dance performance will be staged in Siamsa Tíre on March 18th. Walls Talk is a production by Ériu Dance Company, which was founded by Breandán de Gallaí, a dancer who has been pushing the boundaries of Irish dance for over three decades. Breandán spent more than seven years as the principal dancer with Riverdance, touring the world to perform before audiences that included King Hussein of Jordan, the Emperor of Japan, and Princess Diana. He is now bringing his contemporary take on Irish dance to the people of Kerry. Inspired by the phrase “if these walls could talk”, his new show is a reflection upon the power of memory and how our memories are bound up in the physical world that surrounds us. The show features Breandán’s mesmerising solo dance routines set against songs from the golden era of jazz and blues, performed live on stage by jazz singer Gina Boreham. It also features Breandán’s lyrical musings in both English and Irish on his youth growing up in Donegal. Good Return For Kerry At Páidí’s Comórtas Over 500 visiting and local club players and management turned out for one of Ireland’s longest running Gaelic football club tournaments, the Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé, which took place last weekend in West Kerry after an enforced cancellation due to Covid-19 in 2021. 20 men’s and ladies club sides from 14 counties played in a four-competition tournament at junior and senior grade with Kerry sweeping the men’s contests. Listry Victors The Mark Ó Sé managed Listry were comprehensive victors in the Dermot Earley Senior Men’s Cup. In the six-team round robin competition they overcame reigning Connacht Senior Men’s Champions Padraig Pearse of Roscommon and Galbally of Limerick to reach the final against Cork’s Carbery Rangers which took place in An Ghaeltacht’s Gallarus pitch on Saturday evening. Carbery Rangers, backed by a strong north-westerly wind, led 3 points to 1 point by half time. However, they failed to score in the second half as Listry got the upper hand, chipping away at longrange scores thanks to points from Aodan MacGearailt, Aaron O’Shea and Anthony Sweeney, with the Kerry side winning on a scoreline of 0-7 to 0-3.

Ladies Competitions In the Senior Ladies competition, Corca Dhuibhne won a first round match, beating Laois’s Ballyroan Abbey 7-6 to 3-4 but fell in the semi-final to Meath’s Ratoath 1-6 to 0-6. Clonguish of Longford made it two-in-a-row at the Comórtas, bringing home the victory in the final, beating Ratoath by 4-9 to 1-4. The other Kerry sides to compete in the Junior Ladies Cup were Anascaul / Castlegregory who lost out to everntual winners Mullingar Shamrocks 4-9 to 1-1 in the straight knockout semi-final while Dingle Ladies lost to St. Vincent’s of Dublin on a scoreline of 3-8 to 1-1. The Kerry sides played in a Shield Final with Anascaul / Castlegreogy beating Dingle Ladies 0-3 to 0-2 at Pobalscoil Dingle pitch.

Rocking Win For Lispole Lispole hosted Dublin’s Templeogue Synge Street in the first-round knockout Junior Men’s competition which proved to be the crunch game. The Dublin side boasted The Corona’s frontman and former Dublin minor Danny O’Reilly among their ranks and it was the rock star who impressed most with three points from play and also setting up a goal in the last minute which brought the game to penalties. A high standard of spot kicks brought the contest to sudden death with Lispole finally winning nine goals to eight. Lispole went on to win comfortably in the Junior Men’s Final, beating current Tipperary senior champions LoughmoreCastleiney in the final by 1-5 to 0-3 with Lispole’s Aodán MacGearailt and Mark Manning to the fore.

Keel Goes Country for Community Hall Renovation

After 2 long years with no public celebrations of any festival we, thankfully we can now let it all go and bring back to life our St. Patrick’s Day Parade. This years theme is called “Box Clever” or an “Bosco Glic” The costumes making whilst directed for the main on our younger generation, those of more mature years are welcome to make their presence felt. What’s involved is for people to make costumes out of cardboard boxes, like Lego Blocks and Dices. With the younger generation’s imagination we hope to see some exceptional costumes on the day. As usual the parade will leave the Comharchumann car park at 11.00 travel through the village as far as the Cluainte Holiday homes where it will turn around and return to the Comharchumann’s car park. Floats etc are requested to be at this location at least half an hour before departurture For floats that wish to be in Dingle in time for that parade these will be put to the front of the our parade and will be able to leave the parade at the Cluainte Holiday Homes in order to be in Dingle with time to spare Because of period of long absence we implore that everyone makes an extra special effort this year with their floats and costumes Extra information can be had by calling any of the following organisers Darryl 0874118885, JJ Corduff 0879602382 and Bríd Uí Lubhaing 0877830582

The community hall in Keel, Castlemaine will be rocking to the country sounds of Eddie Lee and The Paudie Coffey Band on Saturday 2nd April at a ‘Keel Goes Country’ fund raising concert, to assist with funding for recent and ongoing renovations to the hall. With the unrivalled popularity of the headline act and the undoubted appetite for live music events, following a two-year hiatus, the Keel Goes Country concert is expected to be a sell out. The community hall in Keel was renovated to exceedingly high standards and re-opened in October 2019. The venue was beginning to attract bookings from a variety of community groups, sports clubs and businesses when the pandemic hit, leaving the Keel community with financial holes to fill following the renovation and short of funding for further planned improvement projects. The ‘Keel Goes Country’ concert is the first of many events planned to put the hall back at the centre of community activities in the parish.

We will have one more walk and final weigh in on Wednesday night for those who would like to partake. Know Your Rights Small Claims Procedure What is the purpose of the Small Claims Procedure? The aim of the small claims procedure (also known as the small claims court) is to provide an inexpensive, fast and easy way for consumers and businesses to resolve disputes without the need to employ a solicitor. Both the person making the claim (the claimant) and the respondent (the person you are claiming against) must be living or based within the State. If either party lives or is based in another EU member state, the European Small Claims Procedure should be used. The small claims procedure is provided by the local District Court offices. What kind of issues are dealt with through the Small Claims Procedure? The following types of consumer claims can be dealt with under the small claims procedure: •

Consumer claims such as for faulty goods or bad workmanship. You must have bought the goods or service for private use from someone selling them in the course of business.

Claims can also be made for minor damage to your property.

Claims for the non-return of a rent deposit for certain kinds of rented properties, such as, a holiday home or a flat in a premises where the landlord also lives.

The claim cannot exceed €2,000. Are there some consumer claims not covered by the Small Claims Procedure? The owner of a well-known music shop in Dingle is hosting an online concert on Saturday, March 5th to raise funds for the Irish Community Air Ambulance. Michael Herlihy from Siopa Ceoil Dingle was airlifted to University Hospital Limerick in July of 2021 after experiencing severe chest pains.

Cromane News Jane Casey Cromane GAA SENIORS: Mid Kerry League (round 4): Cromane 2-10, Glenbeigh-Glencar 1-10 Cromane made it three wins from three in the Mid Kerry league with a good, honest performance against Glenbeigh in Cromane on Saturday afternoon. A strong cross-field wind made conditions tough but both sides did well, delivering some excellent scores. Cromane started well and points from Barry Flanagan, Danny Shea and Donnchadh Walsh left them 0-3 to 0-1 ahead with Tommy Quirke at full-forward responding for the visitors. Glenbeigh-Glencar then enjoyed their best spell of the game hitting five of the next six scores with points from Tommy Quirke (2), Adrian O’Connor, Daniel Griffin and Sean Quirke. This left the visitors ahead by two, 0-4 to 0-6. Cromane rallied and were ahead (1-5 to 0-6) in the 25th minute thanks to a bullet of a shot to the bottom corner from Barry Flanagan. By the break, both sides had tagged on a number of additional scores but were deservedly level at 1-6 to 0-9.

Film Review: Death on the Nile Tom Ó Neachtain Death on the Nile is a new whodunit adapted from Agatha Christie’s book of the same name. It follows the worldfamous detective Hercule Poirot, as he investigates the murder of a rich heiress who is honeymooning on the Nile. This film acts as a sequel to 2017’s lacklustre Murder on the Orient Express, with Kenneth Branagh returning to direct, and to reprise his role as Poirot. Despite Branagh’s best efforts in front of and behind the camera, Murder on the Orient Express was a weak adaptation that wasted its stacked cast and source material. However, Death on the Nile manages to avoid many of the pitfalls its predecessor fell into, and benefits hugely from a smaller group of suspects, and a multitude of vibrant settings. All of the main cast are on top form here, Branagh being the stand-out again, with each actor selling the potential motives and rivalries between

the characters excellently. The dialogue isn’t always as sharp as Christie’s own writing, but the performances usually make it work. Visually, this film is a triumph. Branagh’s creative camera-movement helps to escalate the tension when needed, and gives the dialogue-driven scenes a muchneeded sense of energy. The camera movement pairs beautifully with the detailed sets and costumes, giving this film a strong visual vibrancy missing from its predecessor. Similarly, the Egyptian setting is fully utilised, with many of its classic landmarks and iconography being incorporated into the plot. The decision to focus the story on the new characters, rather than on Poirot himself, is a clever one. Unfortunately, the film’s poor-pacing prevents this story from ever truly building momentum. The flash-backs and character introductions just drag on for too long, and as a result, the investigation in the second-half feels rushed. Also, the final twists aren’t quite as surprising as they should be, and this ultimately diminishes the engaging central mystery. Despite poor pacing and a weak final-act, Death on the Nile is impressive technically, and mostly delivers on the escapist fun it promises. A clear improvement on its predecessor.
