One of the biggest mobilisations of volunteers in the county will take place next month as the annual County Clean Up returns after a two-year absence. The 10th annual County Clean Up will take place on Saturday, 2nd April and a call is going out to individuals and communities to take part and help to make the county spick and span and to give Kerry a fresh look in time for summer.

The County Clean-Up takes place with the support of KWD Recycling and Kerry County Council. Last year, because of the pandemic, a slightly different format was used to ensure public safety and 30 tonnes of rubbish were collected along Kerry roads by over 3,400 volunteers. The usual format returns this year with thousands of people expected to take part in the event.

Don’t Let your Diet End a Beautiful Relationship! Irene Ní Fhlannúra the trillions of probiotics including the better known bifidobacteria and the lactobacillus family. Growing an effective army of probiotics within your microbiome involves feeding them and encouraging them to stay. The greater the welcome, the greater the number and diversity of bacteria which ultimately means greater health for you!

Microorganisms that inhabit the human body, on the skin, in the gut, in the mouth, behind the ears, up the bum, just about everywhere - outnumber all other human cells by about 10 to 1. Because of their tiny size they only amount to about 3 percent of our total body mass, roughly 2kg for the average adult. Despite being miniscule, they contribute to the health status of every part of the body either directly or indirectly through their activity, so much so that the collective microbiome is increasingly viewed by scientists as an organ in its own right. According to research from the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) in 2014, which is a collaborative research project involving more than 80 universities and scientific institutions from around the globe, there are more than 10,000 different species living inside us. This is the first time that researchers have mapped the quantity and species of microorganisms inhabiting the bodies of healthy humans. According to HMP Co-ordinator, James M. Anderson, M.D., Ph.D “We now have a very good idea of what is normal for a healthy Western population and are beginning to learn how changes in the microbiome correlate with physiology and disease.” The application of this research will be far-reaching – now that we understand what the normal human microbiome looks like, we should be able to understand how changes in the microbiome are associated with, or even cause, illnesses. Probiotics is the collective term of beneficial bacteria and other microorganisms residing within the human microbiome. In the gut, they break down proteins, fats and carbohydrates in our diet into nutrients that we can then absorb. They produce valuable substances such as vitamins and anti-inflammatories that our body cannot produce. They are as important to us as we are to them for survival, yet as their host, we have underestimated their significance and treated them badly. Most probiotics enter the body through food – from handling and eating fresh, raw vegetables, from yogurts, buttermilk, fermented foods and in supplements. The modern diet and a hectic lifestyle challenges the survival of these bacteria, killing them off with disinfectants in food production, antibiotics, preservatives, junk food and chronic stress. Furthermore, the welcome they receive if and when they reach the gut is also paramount to ensuring they continue to multiply and colonize inside us to have a real impact on our health. This is where prebiotics come in to play. Prebiotics are a type of fibre from carbohydrates that many species of the good guys rely on for nourishment and survival. It is impossible to have a healthy colony of probiotics in your gut if you do not nourish them. Prebiotics have become a bit of a buzz word, the new health supplement, but in reality, prebiotics are plant fibres we can eat but do not digest. These fibres end up in the colon as dinner for 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Not all fibre is equal when it comes to prebiotics. Researchers have identified the ideal menu and it is random and for many of us, not quite what we would like to eat these days! Inulin, fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), betaglucans, resistant starch and pectin are just some of the fibres that send probiotics into seventh heaven! Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, dandelion leaves are the richest sources of inulin, followed by garlic, onion and leeks. These are known to increase the number and variety of beneficial bacteria along the entire digestive tract. Oats, barley amd mushrooms are particularly rich in a fibre called betaglucans, boosting numbers and variety of bacteria in the gut, but also along the respiratory tract. Betaglucans have also been shown, in their own right, to have an anti-viral effect in the upper respiratory tract and are often used as supplements for colds and flu viruses. The synergy between betaglucan foods and the bacteria that responds to it provides a powerful double act against common respiratory viruses. Probiotics use pectin, found in apples, to produce a short chain fatty acid called butyric acid which improves the health of the intestinal lining in which they reside. These short chain fatty acids also help regulate electrolyte balance including sodium, magnesium, calcium and water levels. They are anti-inflammatory compounds and are involved in proper digestion and bowel movements. Our beneficial bacteria seem to play multiple roles in protecting us from harm from the invaders while regulating body functions to keep us healthy. Other prebiotic foods include beans and legumes, flaxseeds, burdock root, wheat bran and seaweeds. Sauerkraut (fermented cabbage) is a perfect example of the relationship between probiotics and prebiotics. The juice from shredded or bruised raw cabbage leaves provide the prebiotic fibre for Lactobacilli bacteria (found on raw cabbage leaves) to multiply and flourish. As they increased in number, they continue digesting the cabbage leaves until the leaves are completely fermented. At the end of the process the volume of beneficial bacteria present is enough to preserve the sauerkraut and keep away harmful bacteria that would otherwise spoil it. This was one of the original methods of preserving food in the past and provided humans with a great source of probiotics as an added bonus. Sauerkraut, kimchi and other fermented foods have become trendy once again so there is no excuse not to add a spoonful or two to your diet everyday. It is an exciting time for this kind of research and scientist are also looking beyond the gut to unravel the gut-brain connection and the role of the microbiome in our thought processes and emotions. The Human Microbiome Project is ongoing and will provide invaluable preventative measures and treatment options for many chronic diseases in years to come. In the meantime, increasing your consumption of natural, whole plant-based foods to the diet is like rolling out the red carpet for probiotics. It is up to you, the host, to make them feel at home and encourage them to stay, multiply and flourish – a win-win for all involved. Farming News Louis Murchan CAP 2023 PAYMENT AND STOCKING RATE CALCULATORS NOW AVAILABLE The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has developed a payment calculator and a stocking rate calculator to help inform farmers of the changes in the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) for the period 2023-2027. The calculators are available DAFM’s website The payment calculator allows farmers to calculate their indicative direct payments in 2023, including payment entitlement values. To complete the Payment calculator, you will need the following information: •

Number of hectares

•

Number of entitlements

•

Your BPS & greening value per entitlement

The Stocking Rate calculator can be used to calculate stocking rates in terms of Livestock Unit and Kgs of Organic Nitrogen per Hectare. To complete the Stocking Rate calculator, you will need the following information: •

Total area in grassland and tillage you will farm in 2022

•

Expected livestock numbers and age per month in 2022

Step by step guides have also been prepared for the calculators and are available on the same webpage. Ireland’s draft Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plan was submitted to the European Commission on 31 December 2021. The information sessions, hosted by the Department, will provide farmers with early information on changes to the CAP from 1 January 2023. Any information provided will be based on the draft plan submitted to the EU Commission and is subject to change up until the CSP is approved by the EU Commission. All meetings will take place from 8pm to 9.30pm – see www.gov.ie/cap for the full schedule, including details of how to register for the webinar. The webinar on 15th March will be recorded and published on www.gov.ie/cap A Summary of Ireland’s draft Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan (CSP) 2023-2027 is available at www.gov.ie/cap FARMERS TO BE EJECTED FROM AECM IF THEY TURN DOWN COOPERATION STREAM Farmers who turn down a place in the co-operation stream of the Agri-Environment Climate Measure (AECM) won’t be accepted into the scheme at all. If a farmer who applies for the cooperation stream and is unsuccessful will be offered a place in the general aspect of the scheme. However, if a farmer in one of the areas covered by the ‘cooperation project (CP) zones’ does not opt to apply under this stream, then they will not be offered a place in the general stream. The AECM will be divided into two ‘streams’ when it begins from 2023. The ‘AECM General’ will account for 30,000 of the envisaged total uptake of 50,000. In this stream, the maximum payment per farmer will be €7,000, with an expected average payment of €5,000. The second aspect of the scheme is known as the ‘cooperation stream’. This will cater for some 20,000 farmers in eight specific CP zones, seven of which are located in the west and northwest of the country. Here, the maximum payment will be around €10,500 while the expected average payment will be €7,000. Farmers in the CP zones – if they opt to apply to the AECM – will be part of cooperation projects and will implement more stringent environmental measures. They will also be subject to oversight by ‘CP teams’ which will be made up of ecologists, hydrologists, ornithologists and project managers. The AECM will be the ‘flagship environment scheme’ of Pillar II of the next Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and will replace the Green, Low-Carbon Agri-Environment Scheme (GLAS). However, there are concerns that the scheme will be oversubscribed, as the presumed uptake is based on a national average – though uptake in the CP zones is likely to be higher than the national average. There are some 30,000 farmers across the eight CP zones, with the 20,000 expected 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

participants being based on the 60% national average. The actual demand for entry to the scheme in these areas is likely to be higher than 20,000. And if ‘excess applicants’ for the cooperation stream are then shunted into the AECM General, then the latter stream may also be oversubscribed. And it is for this reason that there are now calls for the scheme to be properly and sufficiently funded to accommodate 70,000 farmers or more. The numbers of farmers in GLAS, added to the number of farmers who applied for the Results-Based Rural Environmental Agri Pilot (REAP) last year, amounts to some 62,000. There are almost 50,000 farmers in GLAS, and when REAP opened last year there were some 12,000 applicants. This brings us past 60,000 but we still haven’t included farmers that would have liked to join but didn’t see any benefit in applying because they would not have been accepted. UP TO €40 PER SILAGE BALE PREDICTED. Farmers are being warned to prepare for the worst as the soaring input costs will put further pressure on them in the coming year. One of the key questions being asked at present is if part-time beef farmer can keep their head above the financial waters in 2022 These are some of the people who supports the marts, the vets, the agri-contractors agricultural advisors as well as the many other businesses. At the moment, bales of silage can be bought and delivered for approximately €28/bale. With the rise in fuel and fertiliser costs, it is estimated that the same bale of silage will be costing over €40 delivered next winter. If diesel prices reduce before silage season commences this price will come down somewhat, but not to what they were in 2021. Although fertiliser is expensive at the moment, it may be an awful lot cheaper than trying to buy silage that could be in short supply next winter. This is cold comfort for those who are plying up to 130% more than they were paying in 2021. And this is not the merchants’ doing, it is an effect of the global conflict continuing in The Ukraine. Farmers must try to produce what they produced in 2021, to meet output, but this will be more expensive than last year. They must plan ahead, and negotiate where possible. FARM SAFETY: TOP TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE DURING CALVING SEASON Greater awareness of farm safety is a very important matter, as farming can be a dangerous occupation. As the majority of farmers are livestock/ beef farmers, the dangers associated with livestock farming (and in particular calving) must be highlighted. Incidents related to calving and handling of dams are responsible for the greatest number of non-fatal accidents – 25%. According to recent data from the HSA, of the 197 farm-related fatalities in the last decade, 38 involved livestock. Twelve of these fatalities – 32% – involved attacks by cows with calves; nine involved the victim being knocked over by cattle without aggression; and six involved bull attacks. In 2021 alone, working with cattle accounted for three farm fatalities. While these statistics might be surprising to some, any dairy farmer, in particular, knows that even the quietest cow’s temperament can change during the calving period. With a natural instinct to protect their newborn, and the presence of a human, or dog, viewed as a threat, it is not surprising that cows are involved in a high number of fatal farm incidents. But it is impossible to avoid the cows during calving season. So, when you have no choice, then your housing facilities, gates, and available technology are essential components of your farm-safety arsenal. Top tips on ways to stay safe during this busy period: •

Ensure that you have sufficient calving pens available for your herd size and calving pattern;

•

Ensure that gates and shed doors are secure and in good-working order;

•

A head-locking gate and calving gate are extremely useful pieces of equipment to have in the calving shed for those times when you need to deal with a freshly calved cow, or a newborn calf;

Always ensure that you have a physical barrier between yourself and a freshly calved cow, particularly when treating a calf. •

If there are lose bolts or hinges on gates or doors, replace and repair

before the calving season, so you do not have to worry about finding the time to do so when that time is so limited; •

Always have an escape route planned and rehearsed;

•

Check all the lighting in the calving shed before the season commences, replace spent bulbs, and clean light shades;

•

Keep calving units clean and lay fresh bedding as required, and ensure that the area is well ventilated – this all contributes to animals feeling comfortable and more relaxed;

•

Calving pens are magnets for young children who want nothing more than to see the new arrivals each spring. But children can be seen as a threat by a freshly calved cow, so always ensure that children are kept out of the calving shed. Dogs should also be excluded as they can very quickly spook a cow;

Calving cameras and other electronic devices are worthy investments! They can allow you to review the status of cows and calves from the comfort, and safety, of your home – or bed. With fatigue common during this time of year, technology can help you to get a quality night’s sleep, thus preventing impaired judgement and potential mishap. •

Carry your phone at all times and keep it in a secure pocket, especially at night if you have to check on the cows. Let a family member know that you are heading out, and how long you think you will be;

•

Assess and decide – always risk asses and gauge how safe or dangerous the situation is before you become a casualty of it.

•

Be particularly careful when working around pet cows that have recently calved, they will see you as lower ranking and have no hesitation in giving you a puck if you are handling their calf.

Ciara had her own experience of breast cancer in December 2020 and these funds were raised to help the organisation research a cure & change the landscape of breast cancer treatment into the future.

From the 1901 Census in West Kerry Ted Creedon

Butter Merchant John McKenna, 60, from Holyground, Dingle, was the only person in West Kerry to declare his occupation as ‘Butter Merchant’ in the census. Mary, 40, his wife and a native of Killorglin, was his ‘Assistant’. They had a large family – 4 daughters and 4 sons.

In this issue, more extracts from the 1901 Census which was taken on Sunday, 31 March, with the focus on occupations practiced by one or by very few people from Camp to Dunquin.

The advent of the Tralee and Dingle Light Railway ten years before the census ensured greater security in the transport of butter to the main butter market in Cork. There are stories of people being robbed of their butter when going to that market by road.

Only one person on the peninsula entered ‘Horse Trainer’ in the 1901 census form. His name was Cornelius MacGillicuddy, 25, who lived in Annascaul with his wife Bridget, 21, and eighteen-month-old daughter Retta. Horse trainers prepared horses for riders, shows or racing.

Michael Collins, 24, and Denis Hanafin, 21, of Gowlane, Stradbally both gave their occupations as ‘Butter Factory Labourers’.

Tin Smith There were many smiths, especially blacksmiths, in the area in those days but only one recorded their occupation as ‘Tin Smith’. He was Denis McCarthy, 43, and lived with his family in Grey’s Lane, Dingle. Tinsmiths made a variety of everyday utensils and containers from tin or light metals and also repaired such items. There was one very curious entry in the census form. There were nine people in the McCarthy household including an entry for James Parker aged 6. He was born in ‘Dublin City’ and his relation to the head of the household was ‘Grand Step Father’. Figure that one out. Civil Bill Officer

Basketmaker John Brosnahan, 35, lived in a house on Gate Street (Goat Street). His occupation was ‘Basketmaker’. He was unmarried and, like the musician Cornelius Kennedy from Ballydavid that we met in a previous issue, sadly, he was also ‘Blind’. In the ‘Head of the Household’ column he declared ‘Occupier’. The only other person in the house was lodger Mary McCarthy, 55, a ‘Dressmaker’. Returning Officer Daniel Griffin, 46, lived on Main Street with his wife Mary, 39, and their seven children. His occupation was ‘Returning Officer’. Was this position related to local elections? Perhaps he was employed by the Poor Law Union to determine if people needed out-door relief?

When someone (plaintiff) wanted to take legal action against another party (defendant) their solicitor issued a Civil Bill through an officer of the Courts. In many Irish towns the Civil Bill Officer was simply known as ‘The Civil Bill’ rather than by his real name.

(In 1847, at the height of the Great Famine, the Dingle returning officer, a Mr. Moriarty, was attacked in the town by a violent mob made up almost entirely of women. He had to seek refuge in the house of Captain Eagar, J. P. who summoned a force of police to escort him to his home. However, he was attacked by the mob again a few days later and had to seek shelter a second time. These people were demanding out-door relief but were not entitled to it under the law at the time. Several of them were convicted before the magistrate for acts of violence).

There were three generations of Patrick Sheehy in a house in Coumduff, near Annascaul Lake, on census night. They were Patrick, 72, Patrick 35, and Patrick, 2. The middle Patrick gave his occupation as ‘Water Bailiff’.

Thade Mahony, 28, of Kilcummin More, recorded his occupation as ‘Royal Engineer Telegraph Corporal’

On the original hand-written entries the post of Water Bailiff was given to the two-year-old and then erased (almost) before correcting the mix-up between the three Patricks.

The only person to declare their occupation as ‘House Builder’ in West Kerry was James Ashe, 45, who lived in Dykegate Lane. He and his wife

Christopher Hilliard, 44, lived in a house in Killiney with his wife and seven children. His stated occupation was ‘Civil Bill Officer’, the only one discovered in the 1901 census in West Kerry.

An Gaeltacht qualified with a strong performance in the semi-final v Annascaul on Saturday last on a scoreline of 2-12 to 1-06 Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta Comhghairdeas to Lios Póil on having been confirmed as host of the Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta competitions in 2027. The Comórtas has run since 1969 and the competition which is held over the June bank holiday weekend will bring teams from all over Ireland to Lios Póil. Caitlín Agus An Roth Carl O' Flaherty Saint Catherine has been patron saint of Paróiste Fionn Trá le cuimhne na gcat. Indeed, Catherine or Naomh Caitlín has been associated with this parish, le breis agus seacht gcéad bliain. Why Ventry? Indeed, why Catherine? What circumstances forged this link, which is shared with ten other parishes throughout the country. What is Catherine’s origin and why has Fionn Trá remained devoted to her memory? Catherine was born in 280 AD, in the city of Alexandria in Egypt. During this period, that country was under the control of the Roman Emperor, Maximus. His rise to fame coincided with the Roman civil wars and his persecution of the Christians. Catherine came to prominence in her defiance of his scourges. Maximus ordered fifty scholars to cross- examine her in order to purge her contempt. Surprisingly, her persuasive arguments proved victorious in the debate, resulting in many of the scholars converting to Christianity. She was sentenced to death by means of a spiked wheel known afterwards as the Catherine Wheel. This was a form of torture and execution where the victim was placed on a cart wheel and the limbs stretched out along the spokes. The wheel was slowly rotated and the victims bones broken with blows from an iron bar. At the first touch the angels intervened, and the wheel disintegrated. Immediately, Catherine was recaptured and beheaded, but again, the angels intervened. Her body was whisked away by the angels from Rome to her burial in Mount Sinai in her native Egypt in 301 AD. Anois, sin scéal. A thousand years would pass before knowledge of Catherine’s tragedy and martyrdom would arrive in Europe. This is attributed to three missionary monks who set out from Mount Sinai, until reaching their destination of Rouen, in Normandy, France. Here, the story of her life caught the imagination of the public and the cult of Saint Catherine took hold. There were strong trade links in wine and fish between Rouen and the south coast of Ireland, especially the area from Wexford to Dingle. This period coincides with Norman families such as the Fitzgeralds (Caisleán Ráthanáin/Rahinnane Castle), Trants (Cathair a’ Treantaigh/Caheratrant), Ferriters (Caisleán Phiarais/Ferriter’s Castle), Flemings (Baile an Phléamannaigh/Flemingstown) and Whites (Baile an Fhaoitigh) establishing themselves in Corca Dhuibhne. Their ancestral links with Normandy included culture and religion, and, so, the introduction of Saint Catherine and her story wouldn’t have been unusual. It was during this era, 1450 or so, that the early Christian church was established in the site of Reilig Caitlíona. It was built near the sea wall. O’Donovan’s Ordnance Survey of Ireland in the mid-1840s records the church ruins with broken walls still remaining. However, the mystery that surrounds the claim 20 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

of Catherine’s relics, weaving their way to Fionn Trá remains. This may, perhaps, be answered by relying on local seanchas or folklore. Déan dearmad ar Mount Sinai agus Egypt. Place your trust in the good Lord agus Naomh Caitlin and take a quantum leap of faith. Ní baol duit. Better still, there are many options agus bíodh do rogha féin agat. Tá sé ráite, that the King of Rome was transporting the saint’s relics in a naomhóg when a rogue wave swept them from the craft and they neither sank nor swam until they made their way to Fionn Trá. Then seven men (the number seven is an important number in Irish Mythology) lifted the relics from the beach and respectfully buried them in the old graveyard. Chuala leagan eile fós ó Bhreandán Ó Cíobháin, that the bosca buí or barrel was tossed ashore after a storm. When a farmer arrived to fill a load of sand, he spotted the flotsam and went to investigate. However, he failed to dislodge the barrel agus d’imigh sé leis. A while later, another farmer arrived with a pony for a load of sand. Rug sé ar an mbairille agus bhog sé é gan dua. (He shifted the barrel without any bother). Breandán explained the conundrum thus! The first farmer had committed a peaca marfach (mortal sin) and was in a state of sin. The second farmer was in a state of grace, hence his ease at removing the barrel. This was a convenient opportunity for the church to put the boot in and keep the flock within the fold. Many Ventry people seem to have their own version, which may be as valid as any other, to explain the saint’s arrival. An article in a historical journal (Béaloideas 2008), offers another explanation “… Spears seeks to explain the persistence of a legend from Ventry in Co Kerry, which is also a site where veneration of Saint Catherine of Alexandria continues to this day. Local tradition recounts how a lone survivor from a wrecked Armada ship was washed ashore on Ventry beach and conveyed his gratitude to St Catherine for his safety at the site of the present day well and

where devotion to the saint strengthened local people in their faith …” What can’t be denied is the devotion to Caitlín Naofa in this parish. The pattern day is held annually on 25 November. Originally, it was a turas dhá lá. It was celebrated widely for two days and thousands of pilgrims made their way from all over Corca Dhuibhne to complete ‘The Rounds’. This consists of seven rounds of the graveyard in a clockwise direction. The rosary is recited twice. According to folklore, the saint could be seen on the spire of the old church at sunrise. However, this vision hasn’t been seen since the burial of the first ‘souper’ in the 1840s. This was another reminder to the flock to remain on-side in their devotion to the true’ church’. Another account states “Upon entering the graveyard the pilgrim recited the Ár nAthair and five Sé do bheatha Mhuire … The pilgrim stopped at different stages to pray and continued in a circular manner, reciting two rosaries and a dedicated prayer to the saint: Dia agus Muire Dhuit a Chaitlín Naofa, Is mar bheannuighid siad san duit beannuighim féin duit.” *Extract from Paróiste Fionn Tragha (Triocha-Céad Chorca Dhuibhne, An Seabhac, 1938) Peig Sayers gives an account of the ‘turas’ in her memoirs, Machnamh Seana-Mhná, while a more detailed cuntas is be found in Seán Ó Dubhda’s article in Bealoideas 1959 Pg. 73 In 2019, I decided to attend the pattern day. I left Dublin at 6 a.m. and headed south. It was a soft wet morning as I entered the packed church in Ard a’ Bhóthair. There was an air of excitement, as a new illustration of Naomh Caitlín by Dómhnal Ó Bric was unveiled for the occasion. It depicted Caitlin Naofa in all her glory keeping a watchful eye over Ventry. Six priests were in attendance and the ceremony was conducted totally in Irish. The main celebrant, Canon Michael Moynihan, listed the saint’s connection with Ventry Parish which included; Scoil Naomh

Caitlín, Ionad Pobail Chaitlíona, Reilig Chaitlíona agus Sáipéal Chaitlíona. He spoke of the local dismay when Caitlín was among a group of saints, including also Saint Christopher, who were deleted from the official Calendar of Saints in 1969. Fortunately, they were restored with flying colours in 2002 following the visit of Pope John Paul 2 to Mount Sinai. The ceremony was enhanced by both music and song from the school children of the two local schools. Indeed, the whole congregation lifted the roof with a beautiful rendition of Amhrán Fionn Trá. Afterwards, I made my way to Reilig Chaitlíona to partake in ‘The Rounds’. The leanaí scoile from Cill Mhic a’Domhnaigh school were already on their second round of the graveyard as I collected some pebbles to keep the count. The máistreás scoile was busy keeping the errant pilgrims from jumping up on the wall … tar anuas ón gclaí agus fan ar an gcosán … Her pleas fell on deaf ears, because the children had discovered a hedgehog who quickly folded into a defensive ball. “Féach anois,” she continued … tá an ghráinneog ag geimhriú …” Seemingly, rabbits have overrun the cemetery of late. I spotted just the one and couldn’t resist popping a pebble in its direction. The poor fellow had sceon ina shúile but he made bold his escape ar cosa in airde. Immediately, a lady who was reciting a paidir glanced at me. "Ni bheidh Caitlin ró-bhuíoch duit", she jokingly quipped about my irreverence, ach níor thugas aon

aird uirthi. I completed another round before making my way to the Community Hall for the first Christmas dinner of the year. I paid my remittance of €12 and was issued a yellow raffle ticket. Seventy-six guests, mostly senior citizens from the parish enjoying a tasty meal of soup, turkey, trifle, plum pudding and tea. I ate the meal with relish and didn’t leave a crumb on my plate. It would be remiss not to mention the team of volunteers, chefs, waiters, etc. who made the day so wonderful for the guests. After the meal, the tables were cleared in jig-time in preparation for the raffle, music and dancing. Everyone was attentive when Caitlin Ni Chatháin called out the winning number for the Christmas hamper, containing Dingle gin, whiskey, wine and enough fruit to set up a stall. “Ticéad buí, uimhir a caoga ceathair” she shouted, arís agus arís eile. Surprisingly, there was no apparent winner. I glanced over at Gerry Curran, but he shrugged his shoulders. Then the lady sitting to my left tugged my sleeve and said “Ná raibh an ticéad sin agatsa ar an mbord?” Yes, I thought my luck is in. Caitlín Naofa has rewarded my efforts. My heart jumped with joy. However, with all the cleaning up and foostering around it must have disappeared into thin air. My lord! I searched my wallet, my jacket and every pocket again and again. Caitlín Ní Chatháin was at my side and encouraged me to have a final search. The elusive ticket evaded my capture and I was relieved when a new number was drawn. In truth, I wasn’t one bit disappointed. I was after

having a brilliant day of cultúr, féasta blasta, comhrá agus craic! The music and dancing were about to begin, and I decided to make bold my escape. I ambled towards the car park. The mist had returned, and I retrieved my scarf from my jacket. I noticed that the lady I met previously at the graveyard was also exiting and fastening her coat. I nodded as I unfolded my scarf. Miraculously, a yellow ticket floated free. I grabbed it mid-air. Yes! Number fiftyfour. My heart fell to my boots … victory and defeat. I don’t believe it, I quietly muttered, Unfortunately, I hadn’t realised that the lady was in close proximity. “Anois a gharsúin,” she laughed. “Sin díoltas na gcoiníní!” We both smiled. The rabbit had had his joyous revenge. The last fifty years have witnessed huge social changes in Ireland. Religious practices have greatly declined. The Parish of Fionn Trá has changed in tandem with the rest of the country. The decline of the population has continued unabated. This has had a detrimental effect on local customs and especially on the Irish language. On a positive note, local devotion to Naomh Caitlín and the celebration of the Pattern Day has continued without fail. Long may it continue!

Fried Buttermilk Chicken with Red Cabbage and Fennel Coleslaw By Mark Murphy, Dingle Cookery School

Fried chicken when done well is so tasty. By allowing it to marinate over night in buttermilk will tenderise it slightly and will give it a slightly acidic flavour. What you are hoping to achieve is to have a really juicy chicken with a golden crispy crust. It will be crispier if you use the deep fat fryer but if you do not want to use the fryer you can place them in the oven (180º) for about 25-30 minutes. The red cabbage coleslaw will give you an alternative to the normal cabbage coleslaw and is perfect as a side dish especially with fried food. Ingredients for the chicken 10 chicken thighs or drumsticks 1 litre of buttermilk 2 tsp. paprika 1 tsp. curry powder sea salt ground black pepper. 200g flour

Heat a fryer to 180ºC

For the coleslaw

Preheat an oven to 180ºC

Mix the mayonnaise, mustard, lemon zest and juice in a bowl and add a little cider vinegar to taste. Mix in the vegetables and mix well to coat. Season with salt and pepper and parsley.

Once it is marinated, remove them and place them on a wire rack over a bowl to allow the excess drain off. Meanwhile in another bowl, add the flour the rest of the paprika, rest of the curry powder and a pinch of both salt and pepper. Mix this well and then add the chicken pieces. Coat the chicken well with the flour and the spices and carefully place them in the fryer. Be careful not to overload the fryer. Fry the chicken for about 15 minutes and then remove them from the fryer and place them on a tray and put into the oven for about 10 minutes or until it is cooked.

Serve the chicken with a side of coleslaw. Bain Taitneamh As!!

Drain the chicken and season with salt and pepper.

Small Changes: Citizen Science

Citizen science is scientific research that involves the active involvement of people who are not professional scientists. These participants volunteer their time to collect data which contributes to advancing scientific knowledge in fields such as ecology, astronomy, medicine, genetics and psychology. Irish citizens have a long history of systematically collecting data in order to better understand their environment. Our landscape is dotted with monuments highlighting our ancestors understanding of astronomy e.g. Newgrange, stone alignments. Historical texts such as the Irish annals contain observations of eclipses, comets and storms while the observations of farmers and fishermen passed down through the generations has, and continues to contribute to many scientific disciplines such as meteorology, marine science, botany and zoology. One of the most obvious advantages of citizen science is the number of observations and large territory that can be covered which accelerates scientific knowledge and progress. When the public are engaged in participation, a positive feedback loop is created leading to increased public knowledge and interest. It encourages engagement in science research from a young age when integrated into schools and the collated data can help policy makers and local authorities take site based management actions as well as help to shape policies and regulations. Evidence also shows that it can lead to positive impacts on the social well-being of participants as they have contributed to policy and decision making in addition to multiple positive outcomes for the environment and biodiversity. The arrival of the smartphone provides an unparalleled tool for individuals wishing to engage with citizen science projects. In addition to logging locations and allowing the participant to capture and easily upload photos, mobile apps provide researchers the ability to steer the data gathering to ensure better quality data. Participants can also communicate with one another so a community of like-minded people can build up. There are a large number of citizen science projects currently running in Ireland the areas of ecology and the environment. The commitment required to participate varies from uploading information from a casual observation to taking part in a short training programme to provide regular information to a project. The following are a few of the organisations that conduct citizen science projects that people might be interested in supporting (useful websites listed below). Birdwatch Ireland run a number of bird surveys throughout the year including the Irish wetland bird’s survey, the countryside birds survey and the garden birds survey. These surveys provide valuable information on the distribution and numbers of various bird populations throughout the country. They also run the Spring Alive survey. This is an EU wide project which encourages children to log the first sighting of some migratory birds such as sand martins, cuckoos, swallows and swifts. The aim of the campaign is to encourage interest in nature and also in the conservation of birds that herald the arrival of spring and summer. Ireland has 3171 km of coastline and yet we have very few records of intertidal and coastal marine species. Explore your shore is a project being run by Coastwatch Ireland, which is looking to enlist the help of everyone from absolute beginners to expert identifiers. They are running a course at the minute to train amateur monitors but anyone can submit 24 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

seashore snapshots or record strandings and sightings of jellyfish. You could also record sightings and strandings of whales and dolphins to the Irish Whale and Dolphin group or submit pictures of mermaids purses to www.marinedimensions.ie (mermaids purses are the egg cases of sharks, rays and skates and reporting sightings of them on our shores can lead to the discovery of new nursery areas e.g. Tralee Bay). The National Biodiversity Data Centre works to make biodiversity data and information more freely available in order to better understand and assist the protection of Ireland’s biodiversity. It hosts the citizen science portal (also available as an app) through which you can upload a casual recording of everything from sightings of frog spawn and bees to birds, lichens and freshwater fish – there are leader boards on an individual and county basis to encourage those with a competitive spirit! A number of their recording initiatives include the ladybird atlas, the spring flowers project and the farmers’ wildlife calendar. They also partner with other organisations to support more initiatives to improve understanding of Ireland’s biodiversity e.g. the Irish hedgehog survey or the wild honey bee study. The website also provides many identification publications and runs courses for anyone wishing to do volunteer recording work e.g. the Dragonfly Ireland survey will run a course in Tralee during the summer. Ag éirí as m’alt ar Phádraig Ághas (1885-1966) san eagrán deiridh de Corca Dhuibhne Beo,1 seo a leanas an gearrscéal ‘Beachúil’ – duais-iarracht le Pádraig i gcomórtas liteartha Oireachtas 1920 faoin ainm cleite “Tadhg Caoch”.2 Ba sa chló Gaelach a foilsíodh é – an cló ealaíonta a d’fhoghlaimíomar ar scoil le linn dom peannluaidhe a bhreith im ghlaic den chéad uair fé stiúir shocair ag ár múinteoir Neil Bn. Uí Chíobháin sna ranganna beaga i Scoil Chluain Chumhra, i ndeireadh chaogaidí na haoise seo chaite. Is é Séamus a bhí os cionn Óglach Chorca Dhuibhne i dTrá Lí an Domhnach san. Tháinig Beachúil agus dhéanfadh sé ‘cat agus dhá eireaball.’ Do ghlaoigh sé chuige ar an Ardchonstábla agus ar an Sargeant, agus dúirt sé leo go gcaithfeadh sé labhairt go díreach agus go macánta leo, go gcaithfidís aire do thabhairt dá ngnó, nó muna ndéanfaidís go bhfaigheadh sé na daoine chun a dhéanta – gur léir go raibh faille éigin á dhéanamh agus a rá nach raibh beartha ar an ropaire sin Mac Domhnaill fós – gur cosuil gur b’iad san a bhí ciontach. Castlegregory Notes The St Patrick's Day Parade will be held in Castlegregory village this year commencing from the National School on Thursday 17th March at 3pm. We have some sad news to report. Over the weekend, we received a message from St. Patrick saying that unfortunately he was going to have to decline our offer to lead our parade. Oh no, we were horrified. How could we have a St. Patrick’s Day parade without St. Patrick! He said there was only one of him and Kilkenny had asked him first and he had to be good to his word. “But, '' he said, “ have faith. Sure, I wouldn’t leave you high and dry now, would I? I am sending an emissary in my place. Of course, it won’t be the same but I guarantee that my stand-in will bring a smile to your face and a lightness to your heart if only for a short time. Isn’t that what we all need right now? My blessings to you all and enjoy yourselves.” Speaking of St. Patrick’s Day, there is still time to buy a line or 3 for the hamper that is in SPAR. There are lines for purchase in all the shops in the village including the Post Office and the Info Office. Proceeds will go towards the clubrooms. The winner will be drawn after the parade, under the canopy at the playground. Refreshments will be provided for the children. Blow-In cafe and Spar will be open if the adults want to purchase coffee, tea and sweets. Summer Festival to be held in Castlegregory this July, from Thursday 14th to Sunday 17th. Community Tree Planting Day The Transition Years in the Mean Scoil have been tree planting in the Nature Park behind their school. Forest Connections Kerry have been coming in to them on Thursdays for the last 6 weeks and helping with their tree plan. Over the last 2 years, they have planted three small woodland areas, and hundreds of metres of hedgerow. On the 24th of March they are having a community tree planting day where the whole of the parish is invited to come along and plant trees. Castlegregory Tidy Towns Update Funding and grants: This week we received the £1000 grant from the Central TidyTowns Operations Team. We thank the Department Of Rural and Community Development, Pobal and SuperValu TidyTowns. This grant will enable us to purchase electric (battery operated) strimmer, a hedgerow trimmer, secateurs and safety vests for TidyTowns volunteers to use. We will also be able to fund a number of critical biodiversity signs and a compost study which a number of members of the community asked for. Litter & Dog Poo situation: Unfortunately, littering is continuously increasing on our roadsides, in the village of Castlegregory 28 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

and surrounding areas. We ask that everyone takes their litter home. Stop throwing litter out of cars into hedgerows or ditches. Stop dropping your litter into public bins, on walkways and sidewalks. We also ask all dog owners to please pick up their dog’s poo, dispose of it in the dog poo bins provided or take it home. In case people don’t release: litter picking and clean up of dog poo is almost 100%left to tireless volunteers who have to use their own time to pick up litter and discarded dog poo bags. This means they cannot use that time for other critical activities for the community. We appeal to everyone to be litter conscious and do the right thing to preserve our beautiful Castlegregory. At this time, we would also like to thank all those volunteers who so tirelessly pick up litter and clean up after irresponsible people. We so appreciate your help and support. Litter Picks: We have two public litter picks scheduled over the next 2 months. Saturday, 12 March, 10:30 am & Saturday, 9 April, 10:30 am. All are welcome. Meet at Castlegregory Playground. Please bring your own gloves, pickers and safety vests if you have them. We will have some gloves, safety vests and pickers on the day available for those who don’t have their own. We will of course provide bags courtesy to Kerry County Council. Both dates are also announced on the TidyTowns Facebook page. Volunteers: We are still looking for regular TidyTowns volunteers. PARADES. Dingle Fife And Drum Band will be out early on St Patricks morning to get their first Parade under way at 6p.m. from Ashmount. A huge congratulations to the participants who sang and recited stories in this year's Scór na nÓg Chraobh Chiarraí Thiar, which took place in Halla Lios Póil on the 12ú March. It was lovely to come together after two years to have Scór again. Our thanks to the competitors Órla (Cailíní Chorca Dhuibhne), Cara (CLG Lios Póil) agus Tommy (CLG Lios Póil) - they were all excellent. Thanks to Heather Grey for doing the judging and for preparing feedback to all. Our thanks also to Siobhán Ní Ghrifín, Risteard Mac Eoin, Roibeard Ó Cathasaigh, Kevin Ó Grifín agus gach éinne eile. It was short notice to organise a divisional final with the dates appearing after covid restrictions lifted suddently, but hopefully everyone can come together for Scór na bPáistí again when it will be held in late May / early June.
