Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights
On Tuesday 6th September the feature will be the French crime drama “ Dheepan”. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, the new film from acclaimed director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet) is a gripping, human tale of survival. On the losing side of a civil war in Sri Lanka, a Tamil soldier poses as the husband and father of two other refugees in order to escape their ravaged homeland. Arriving in France, the makeshift “family” sets about establishing a new life-only to find themselves once again embroiled in violence on the mean streets of Paris. The following week on Tuesday 27th September the feature will be War Dogs. The film follows two friends in their early 20s who are living in Miami Beach during the Iraq War and decide to exploit a littleknown government initiative that allows small businesses to bid on U.S. Military contracts. Starting small, they begin raking in big money and are living the high life. But the pair gets in over their heads when they land a 300 million dollar deal to arm the Afghan Military - a deal that puts them in business with some very shady people, not the least of which turns out to be the U.S. Government. Based on true events War Dogs rises on the strength of Jonah Hill’s compelling central performance to take a lightly entertaining look at troubling real-world events.

The new season started for the Juniors with a home game for the U13s against Ballyheigue. Man of the match Ryan Scanlon Newstead scored twice and Aaron Hughes and James Hoare got one each.

Training starts very soon for the Dingle Bay Rovers Juniors Academy. This training is for those born in the years 2006,2007 and 2008. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for details of when training starts this season. Coaches Needed We will only be able to field teams in all the age groups if we have the coaches to run the teams. So any interested parent or otherwise please contact Damien on 086 381 6277. No experience necessary, just enthusiasm.
Fund Raising
You may have seen our fund-raising efforts around the peninsula. It is an important part of running a local, voluntary sports club so your support is much appreciated. Our current goal is to buy a piece of land next to the main soccer pitch and convert it into a training and match day pitch. Due to the number of players and matches on the only Dingle Bay Rovers pitch, and the bad weather of last winter, a lot of junior matches were called off at home last season. We are hoping having a second pitch will ease that problem.
The Walking on Cars Experience Competition
Five Years A Zumba Instructor Natalie Russell Yes! It is hard to believe it, but I got my Zumba fitness licence in August 2011. I am not great at celebrating my own land marks and achievements, but this time I am going to go a step further and do just that. So on Monday 19th September, I am going to re-launch my classes by inviting you all to a free class at 7:15pm in the Weaver’s Yard Studio, behind Lisbeth Mulcahy’s on Green Street in Dingle. Zumba fitness is a workout in disguise. If you have never tried this class before or you are adverse to exercise, I want to see you! Mums and dads, you can bring your kids provided they are accompanied by parent or guardian. The class on Monday is a general class, so anyone interested in low impact I would love to see you too. I am really delighted with my zumba classes all over the county and they really compliment my DJ business, the business of FUN !! One major change I am making to my classes is that I am going to work in blocks of five or six weeks. Please note that space is limited in our beautiful studio with a sprung floor, so if you want to book a spot, please come on Monday or call me 086-8384111 or send a facebook message. I am still finalising what looks like a busy autumn schedule, so I want to thank you for your patience. I want to thank those of you who kept coming in the summer, your dedication and enthusiasm keeps me going and focussed on being the best instructor I can be. You can sign up on Monday the 19th for the next set of classes. Tea, coffee and some light snacks will be provided.
Driving Lessons in Dingle
So part of our fund-raising effort is our Walking on Cars competition. There are great prizes including the 1st prize of 2 guest passes to Walking on Cars sold-out gig on the 12th of November at the 3 Arena in Dublin, staying at the 5 star Fitzwilliam Hotel. You can also win Walking on Cars merchandise, a WK Fitness Gym membership, an Interior Design consultation with Dingle Kreations, a hamper from Garvey’s Supervalu and a voucher for Vincent Murphy Sports. Tickets are available online at www.dinglebayroversjuniors.com/competition/ or from one of the hundreds of Junior players who are scouring the peninsula with their ticket books.
Thank you
Obviously we couldn’t run such a great competition with having great prizes. So thank to Walking on Cars, WK Fitness, Dingle Kreations, Garvey’s Supervalue and Vincent Murphy for their fantastic support to the club. And thank you to all the parents who lend their support and time.

and a pinch of salt. Allow to cook gently for about three minutes. Add the butter, bacon, garlic and thyme and continue to cook for a further five minutes. Add the milk and cream to the pot and once it comes to a gentle boil turn it down to a simmer and cook this for about ten minutes. At this stage the liquid will have thickened slightly. Strain the liquid into a bowl.
Potato, Leek and Bacon Gratin Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School I think everyone might agree that we all love a good potato gratin. Garlicky potatoes, creamy and piping hot all sing comfort food. A good gratin is perfect to go with almost every dish regardless if it is a roast chicken, a warm salad, lamb casserole or simply on its own. For this one I have added some leeks and some great bacon such as Ashes or Micilín Muc. Try it and see for yourself.
Ingredients 2 leek, washed and halved lengthways 15g butter 5/6 bacon rashers, cut into small pieces
In a rectangular ovenproof dish measuring about 23cm x 18cm and 6cm high, grease the bottom with some butter. Pour some of the leek and bacon into the dish. Spread them to make a thin even layer. Season well with salt and pepper. Add a nice even layer of potatoes and pour some of the strained cream and milk mixture over it. Continue to layer this until all the ingredients are gone. Cover this with foil and place it in the oven. Leave it covered for about one hour. Remove this from the oven and remove the foil. Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the top. Put this back in the oven uncovered for about 15 minutes. Enjoy!!!

Farming News
Louis Murchan
Dept Announces Interim Nitrogen and Phosphorus Statements The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine are now notifying farmers in respect of their Nitrogen and Phosphorus (N&P) limits. This is being done by text message and will cover the first six months of the year. Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements for the period 1 January to 30 June 2016 are now available for all farmers online by registering on www.agfood.ie. These N&P statements are very useful especially for the intensive farmers, and should assist them in deciding whether or not they need to change their farming practices before the end of the year to stay within the limits set down in the Nitrates Regulations. Some may worry about the expense and effort of applying for a derogation. In many cases, a slurry export agreement between you and a neighbouring farm, is a fast and expedient solution. Capital gains Tax or CGT Looks to apply tax on the increase in value of assets such as land, building while these assets were in the hands of the person now considering transferring them. The tax applies only for the disponer (the person who owns the asset but is about to transfer it) who is transferring the asset during his/her lifetime. The current rate of the tax is 33%. This increase in value (the Gain) can be crudely calculated as follows: •
Gain = Current value at date of disposal
•
minus
• the value when the assets were first acquired by the current owner As stated this is a crude measure in that the gain can be adjusted to take account of improvements made to the asset (for example land drainage) and account can also be taken of the effect of inflation on the value of the asset. The main saviour in reducing the impact of CGT is via its main relief called CGT Retirement Relief which can greatly reduce or eliminate the tax completely. To avail of CGT Retirement relief there are a number of conditions that must be complied with, mainly • The owner must be over 55 years of age at the time of the transfer •
He owner must have owned and used the asset in question for the previous ten years
These conditions particularly the “ownership and usage” condition have some flexibility but timely advice and forward planning is essential to make sure that this valuable relief is availed of. There are also other conditions relating to the maximum value of the assets that qualify (see later table for relief ceilings) so it is important that timely advice is received from an accountant/ tax adviser before any transfer takes place. Note that even though this is called retirement Relief the claimant can still continue farming even after claiming the relief. €12m Basic Payment Refund to 98,000 Farmers The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed T.D., today announced that the payment of €12.4 million to approximately 98,000 farmers has commenced. This money was deducted from their 2014 Single Payment Scheme (SPS) payments under the Financial Discipline rule. The Financial Discipline deduction totaling €12.4million from the 2014 SPS payment will now be reimbursed to 2015 applicants. These payments “will bring the total paid to Irish farmers under the Basic Payment Scheme since payments commenced in October 2015 to €1.2 billion. Arrangements are at an advanced stage for the issuing of the first installment of 70% of the 2016 BPS from 16 October. All farmers are urged to respond as quickly as possible to the query letters which have been issuing in recent weeks to farmers who have an outstanding query on their 2016 BPS application. This will help to further speed up the issuing of payments to farmers. Finally, with the approach of the National Ploughing Championships about to take place, and the expected throngs of farmers ready to converge on a not so unsuspecting farm, in the midlands, you may expect the first farm payment of the year to be made either late this week or early next week. Not being cynical, but there isn’t a politician in 12 West Kerry Live
the country who would dare put his nose into the field, if this payment were not first issued, so good for you, Ploughing Championship. This will be the ANC or Areas of Natural Constraint payment, previously known as Disadvantaged payment or Area Aid. Ploughing Championship The Annual Ploughing Championship takes place again, next week, this time in Screggan, Tullamore, Co Offaly from 20th – 22nd September. Those travelling may remember last years show as an easy access event, due to its proximity to the Motorway outside Portlaoise. This year, it may not be as easy to get to, as Tullamore is a bit further north, and much more distant from the motorway, so additional planning and travel time will be needed This is both Irelands and Europe’s largest Outdoor Exhibition and Agricultural Trade Show, which saw last year’s attendance hit 281,000 attendees and over 1,500 delighted exhibitors. It is the 85th year of the event, and there are not many out there who remember the first one, not to mind having attended it. Here’s to those who did and do! Successful Trade Mission to South East Asia Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Micheal Creed T.D. has concluded the agri-food trade mission to Asia which included some 30 of Ireland’s leading agri-food and agri-service companies, after visiting Singapore. The last day of the visit featured a meeting with Senior Minister of State Desmond Lee, a key political figure in Singapore, as well as a number of high profile events in Singapore, an important trading, transport, manufacturing and logistical hub for the entire South East Asian region, with an overall population of over 600 million. One important outcome of this visit was the opening of a Bord Bia office in Singapore, committing the organisation to further strengthen out Far Eastern market, therefore lessening our dependence on closer trade. This may seem, “wishie-washie”, but in light of Brexit other issues we must examine new markets, to secure additional trade markets for Irish products, both agricultural and manufacturing. Again Kerry Group is an excellent example of an Irish Food Company with a worldwide presence. They have a state of the art Research & Development facility out there, as part of a drive to enhance their reputation in the region and highlight their success to milk suppliers in Ireland. And lets hope that when they secure these markets and expand on them, they reflect this in a proper price increase to their main suppliers, the Iriah dairy farmer, particularly in Kerry. Another Irish success story in terms of exports to Singapore, where Irish duck commands a premium, is Silver Hill Duck. Many of us love a bit of duck on a Saturday night, and sometimes wonder why we can’t get our hands on it so readily, and here is why? They are also making in-roads into the Far Eastern poultry market. And these, Ladies and Gentlemen are Irish companies operating half-way around the world. Apparently the Minister Creed, and his delegates travelled 15,500 miles around the world in four days and travelled from Peking, Shanghai and Singapore, with additional stop-over’s in Vietnam and South Korea as well. Junket on not, this offers many Irish companies serious exposure to the mood markets in a part of the world, where there is a population explosion, and the need for new sources of all types of food product is ever increasing. In Brief GLAS I & II:- Those who signed up for GLAs in 2015 will need to have a Nutrient Management Plan complete by years end. This isn’t very onerous on the farmer, as it will be carried out by your advisor, but soil samples will need to be taked as part of this, over the coming months. Payment for this scheme is expected in the first week of November, and even with cock-ups, all should be paid by Christmas. GLAS III:- will reportedly be open in October next, with a start date expected to be 1st January 2017, giving those who apply, four full years in this third instalment of the scheme. Notice will be given in all related agricultural publications, including these very pages, when the scheme opens. Commonage Management Plans:- There is no further news as to when the Department of Agricultrue Agfood CMP on-line system will be in place. Many of you are wondering when these plans will be completed, but the only news here is, WATCH THIS SPACE. They cannot be completed until the system is in place, and accordingly, farmers cannot be expected to commit to any disciplins until they are. Contact Louis Murchan Tel;- 087-2857938

Ted Talks: Maria Simmonds-Gooding Ted Creedon This interview with Maria Simmonds-Gooding was broadcast on Radio Kerry on November 30, 2009, as part of the series South by South West.
sleep with the noise they made every night. We only had a lantern and I said to my cousin that if we light the lantern and you take it down the field the birds might be attracted to the light and then we wouldn’t have so much noise around us. So we lit the lantern and she started walking down the field and then, very clearly, I saw this black calf and could hear it as well. It was a black calf, pounding down the field and it had this sort of driving force, a kind of energy that was very negative and extremely frightening. I started roaring and roaring and roaring at my cousin. She came back because she couldn’t understand why I was roaring at her. She heard nothing, she saw nothing. I suppose it must have been very hard for her to believe anything I told her. But I was certain, and I still am all these years later, that that calf absolutely existed and that was the third night. For me that was a big tragedy because I had hoped to spend many visits on the Inish but I knew I could never stay there after that experience. I don’t think it was Marie Claire I was worried about, it wasn’t me I was worrying about, it was the very presence of this calf and it was the fear that this calf stirred up. This unspeakable fear. It is probably the fear that you’d never forget. One didn’t know that one could have such an amount of fear till it happens. That was what marked it out as something different. There were no cattle or calves on the island only sheep. After a few days I put it completely out of my mind. I went back many times on my own, for weeks and weeks on end and never had any repeat of that experience.

A Close Encounter with the Supernatural on Inishvickillaun. Artist Maria Simmonds-Gooding first visited the Dingle peninsula on June 16, 1963 and became a regular visitor in the following years. “The key visit was in 1968 when it was a beautiful hot summer, month after month without any rain. I was staying in Kruger’s pub and my cousin Marie Claire, from Dooks ,was with me. I bumped into some divers that were looking for the Spanish Armada wreck. One of them was Don Tucker and he said if you’re at the Cuasín tomorrow, at 3 o’clock, I’ll take you to any island you want. Immediately I thought of Inishvickillaun, not because from a distance it attracted me but I felt it was far enough out to get away to be able to do the work in a more solitary situation.
I bought my cottage here in Carhoo in 1968 and my immediate neighbour here was Liza Mitchell whose people came from the Inish. One day we were sitting by her fire in the dead of winter and she asked me if I had ever heard about the calf and the Inish. She told me that one evening a strange calf came in to the cottage on the island, Tig na hInishe. They knew it wasn’t one of their own. They gave it some milk and then put it out of the cottage. It went over to the cliff and went over, and where it went over the cliff their four cows and four calves followed it and were all, as she said, clifted”.
WHELEHAN
That same evening in Krugers I met Tom na hInise and he told me that there was a little house out there and that I’d find the key to Tig na hInse under some stones. I knew I would bring a tent but I thanked him for that. So the next day we got a big sack, one of those sort of flour sacks and in that one sack we put all of our provisions. These included snares for the rabbits - I had been taught how to snare rabbits by Seánín Mhicil on the Blasket island so I really knew how to go about that.

We arrived down at the Cuasín at 3 o’clock in the afternoon the next day and we went straight across to the Inis in that dinghy with that big engine. We set up our tiny tent, it had no groundsheet and somehow nothing seemed to matter about anything. We put the tent into the most sheltered spot we could find which was a field that had a wall made around it, as I discovered later, for one blind sheep. A stone wall all around a piece of land so that one blind sheep couldn’t get out. The next morning was so, so hot and I went down the cliff to collect all of my painting stuff there and when I got up the cliff I noticed there was a yacht that had arrived with a lone yachtsman on board. We saw that he was getting in a dinghy so my cousin and I headed back to the house and we watched and waited. Then we saw this man coming up the island without a stitch on him! He must have thought he had found his paradise and then he saw these two big tall women and he must have got a fright and he disappeared quickly! On the dot of eleven o’clock every evening there was a huge racket from storm petrels coming in from 40 miles out to sea and they came back to that stone wall where they had their nests. We just couldn’t

The Kerry Coast The Kerry Coast, a comprehensive new book chronicling life on the sea and shores of Kerry, is available in book shops now. Castleisland native Tony O’Callaghan, author of the popular guide The Dingle Way Companion, has spent many years exploring the length of the Kerry coastline by sea and land, uncovering hidden treasures, listening to local lore, meeting colourful personalities and seeking out the stories behind ancient monuments and historical buildings. He displays an intimate knowledge of the unique challenges facing coastal communities and a deep insight into contemporary life. The Kerry Coast combines this knowledge of both past and present in a thought-provoking and reflective narrative. Beginning with Shannon Estuary, and making its way through North, West and South Kerry, The Kerry Coast transports readers along the seaboard of the county-- and its offshore islands--giving them the opportunity to experience its rich and diverse archaeological, historical and cultural legacy and gain a critical understanding of the economic and social pressures of the present day for those who make their living near and from the sea.
line. Inside is a diverse mix of anecdotes ranging from the Spanish Armada to Fothair na Manach, The Blasket Islands and the first Ordnance Survey of Ireland. Some hilarious tales on personalities such as Kruger Kavanagh, Gene Mangan and Margaret Barry give a light-hearted balance to this opus. Just as Tony has sensitively captured the spirit and determination of local people in his prose, some characters and the beauty of the seascape and landscape have been portrayed in exquisite pen and ink sketches by artists including Jack Bates from West Kerry. The finelydrawn and detailed maps by Tadhg MacGillicuddy allow the reader to trace Tony’s journey ‘ar imeall an domhain’. The Kerry Coast was written published and printed in Kerry and is on sale in all bookshops in the county as well as in a number of coastal retail outlets.

The Dingle Waldorf Initiative Since May a small group of people interested in Waldorf education have been meeting every 2nd Monday in Dingle to explore the possibilities of starting a Waldorf Kindergarten, which may grow in to a Waldorf school in the area. Waldorf education, also known as Steiner education, is based on the educational philosophy of Rudolf Steiner, and it emphasizes the role of imagination in learning, striving to integrate holistically the intellectual, practical, and artistic development of pupils. On Monday last Ulrike Farnleiter gave an introductory talk on the Waldorf system upstairs in John Benny’s, this introduction was a start of a series of events which will take place every second Monday with the next one due to take place on the 26th of September 4p.m. entitled “A Michaelmas festival celebration” for children from 3 years and over. All are welcome. For more information call Tonnie: 086 314 47 23 or Cornelia: 087 279 84 51

Soccer Results: Castlegregory Celtic 3-1 CG Killarney. A fantastic start to the league campaign saw Castle take all 3 points from the opening encounter against a well organised CG Killarney side last Sunday morning. In very breezy conditions the match was a tight affair in the opening period and in fact a great save from Castle keeper Declan Owens kept Killarney out and very soon after a superb ball out of defence by Conor Shannon set Ian Flynn free and he beat the last defender before coolly slotting the ball under the advancing keeper to give the home side the lead. This knocked the away side and soon after Castle doubled their lead when a great Damien McMahon corner found Damien Finn in the 6 yards box and he headed home to make the score 2-0 to the home side at the break. In the second half both teams had to battle with really windy conditions and Castle were managing well until a Killarney corner broke loose and was fired home through a ruck of players to bring them back into the game. However, soon after Castle restored their 2 goal lead when a great through ball by Ian Flynn set Enda Whelan free and he planted his shot in the near bottom corner to seal the win for the home side. Overall a great performance all over the pitch and a supreme start to the new season. Team: Declan Owens; Michael John Flynn; Ger O Callaghan; Shane Kenny; Conor Shannon; Brandon Hoare; Enda Whelan; Conor Biden; Damien McMahon; Damien Finn & Ian Flynn. Subs: Steve Speirs; David O Brien; Ryan O Connor; Kevin Power; Patrick O Donoghue & Jason Griffin 24 West Kerry Live

Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid 2016 – Seandálaíocht agus Dinnseanchas an Bhlascaoid 2016 Blasket Celebration, Archaeology and Place Name Lore of the Great Blasket Island
Isabel Bennett
Tá an samhradh ag druidim chun deiridh agus tá sé in am aghaidh a thabhairt ar imeachtaí an Fhómhair. Ní fada uainn anois Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid, an chomhdháil bhliantúil a réachtáltar in Ionad an Bhlascaoid Mhóir. I mbliana Seandálaíocht agus Dinnseanchas an Bhlascaoid a bheidh á phlé, agus aoichainteoirí den scoth chun a bheith ag labhairt ann, mar is gnáth. Chomh maith leis sin beidh seoladh leabhair ann (toradh Cheiliúradh 2015, Aimsir na nUasal), agus turas timpeall Dhún Chaoin. Ach an rud is tábhachtaí ná go mbeidh cairde ag teacht le chéile arís ann, chun taitneamh a baint as na cainteanna, as an gceol is as an gcomhluadar agus chun a bheith thar n-ais i gceantar álainn Corca Dhuibhne arís (go háirithe iad siúd a thagann ó lasmuigh den leithinis). The end of the summer is approaching, and with it comes the annual Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid, which has been running in Ionad an Bhlascaoid Mhóir/the Blasket Centre for many years now, celebrating, each year, a different aspect of the culture and heritage of the Great Blasket Island. This year’s topics, Archaeology and Place Name Lore, should give plenty of material for discussion, and will run from 23-25 September. The format of the Ceiliúradh, details of which can be accessed through the website www.ceiliuradh.net, changes little over the years. After the opening by Dr Pádraig Ó Héalaí, and a book launch (the proceedings of the 2015 Ceiliúradh), there will be an evening of music and entertainment. The main business begins on Saturday, with talks on the principal topics 26 West Kerry Live
by Micheál Ó Coileáin, Domhnall Mac Síthigh and Dr Criostóir Mac Cárthaigh as well as the presentation of Sparánacht an Bhlascaoid. Then there will be a guided tour of Dún Chaoin (led by John Kennedy and Domhnall Mac Síthigh). On Sunday morning there will be special event in the Ionad, followed by the Closing presentation.
There is no shortage of interesting place names to be found throughout the island. Many of these, and the stories attached to them, will be explored during the weekend, with all the talks and activities being carried out as Gaeilge. The Ceiliúradh is always very well supported, so do book a place to ensure your seat at this always-rewarding conference.
The Great Blasket Island is rich in archaeological remains, from the recently-discovered wedge tomb, which may date from over 4000 years ago, through the field systems at the ‘back’ (western side) of the island which may be early medieval in date, to the scant remains of the signal tower (early 19th century) and the ‘village’ itself, some of the houses of which might be over 200 years old. Perhaps the best-known monuments are the two conjoined enclosures which constitute An Dún, situated on a cliff edge. These are likely to be of early medieval date, but excavation would be the only way to prove this. Other monuments include a holy well, and a ceallúragh or children’s burial ground.
Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, is now closed for the season, but to learn more about the archaeology of the entire peninsula, have a look at our website, www. westkerrymuseum.com or arrange a visit, for individuals or tour groups, by contacting the curator at info@westkerrymuseum.com or tel: 066-9156333. Táimid an-bhuíoch as an tacaíocht a fuaireamar ó Mhuintir Chorca Dhuibhne i mbliana, agus ós na cuairteoirí go léir a tháinig chugainn; tá súil againn fáilte a chuir romhaibh arís i rith 2017.

Keel GAA Colin Clifford County League The Division 3 relegation play off between Keel and Ballydonoghue was played in Strand Road. Conditions were poor with a strong breeze and scattered showers but credit to both teams as they produced a great game that ended 2-13 apiece after extra time. Ballydonoghue played with the wind in the first half and quickly established a three point lead through Damien O'Carroll and Jim Crean before Thomas Ladden scored Keel's first point. Darragh Sheehy and Paul Kennelly extended Ballydonoghue's lead to four points before Ladden scored Keels second point to make it 5 points to 2 after 15 minutes. Damien O'Carroll and Aaron Murphy exchanged points and Laddens third point left Keel 2 behind. With 4 minutes to half time Murphy slalomed through the Ballydonoghue and goaled to put Keel a point up but Ballydonoghue ended the half with points from Sheehy and Kennelly to leave it Keel 1-4 Ballydonoghue 0-8' Keel had the wind at their backs after the interval but after 10 minutes they were 5 points in arrears. Kieran Lynch scored a goal and a point and along with a Kennelly free Ballydonoghue led 1-10 to 1-5. Keel launched a comeback through Gary Sayers who kicked 3 points but a breakaway goal from O'Carroll looked to bury Keel and make the score 2-10 to 1-8 approaching 60 minutes. But Keel showed great heart to get back into the game. A martin Burke Point was followed by a goal from a penalty by Sayers. Well into injury time Sayers kicked a massive 50 yard free to send the game into extra time at 2-10 each. Kennelly and Sheehy opened the scoring in extra time but were unable to convert more of their chances with the wind. In the second half Ballydonoghue defended well and Keel were finding scores hard to come by.. Aaron Murphy cut the deficit to 1 but on the 20 minute mark Kennelly kicked an outragous point from near the endline to put Ballydonoghue 2 up. As the game entered injury time Burke brought the gap back to one. Keel pressured the Ballydonoghue kick out and won a free 30 yards out on the sideline. Up stepped Sayers to repeat his earlier heroics and from his wrong side curled the ball over the bar to send the game to a replay. Well done to both teams on an excellent tight game of football and to Kerins O'Rahillys for the use of their excellent pitch and facilities. Keel: Stephen Cahillane, Donal O'Neill, Gary Nagle, David McAssey, James Nagle, Aaron Cahillane, Gavin Evans, Thomas Ladden(0-3), Martin Burke(0-2), Colm O'Neill, Gary Sayers(1-5 3f), Barth Murphy, Dylan Prendergast, Francis Ahern, Aaron Murphy(1-3 2f) Subs Terry O'Sullivan, James Foley, Emmet Ashe, Luke Flynn, John Cahillane, Tommy Buckley Ref Jer Lynch Under 8's Well done to the following U6s who were deemed most ready for the 'step up' to U8s: Addy Nolan, Charlie O'Neill, Donagh Lenihan, Daire Nagle, Paddy Cournane, Meabh Kennedy, Róisín McCarthy & Jeff Power Well done to all our U8 players who played two Listry teams on Thursday 8th at home. There was lots of talent on display and football skills were developed even more. They were very competitive again when they and their active supporters travelled in great numbers to a windswept Fenit on Sunday 11th to play Churchill. We're playing Churchill again in Keel at 11am on Sunday 25th. Just a reminder that training continues @10.30 on Sundays & @ 6.30 on Thursdays. Hopefully we'll have as many U8s as possible participating for the remainder of the Programme. A reminder to parents and players that gum shields are compulsory.

Healing with Herbs
Elecampane may cause allergic reaction in people sensitive to plants in the asteraceae family
Deirdre Daly
Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner.
Elecampane Inula helenium
Deirdre is a qualified herbalist and can be contacted by email at: daly. deirdre9@gmail.com
Parts Used; Root Family; Asteraceae Elecampane is an excellent herb for the respiratory system and is used primarily for the lower respiratory system where the lungs may be affected. The herb however can be used in a broader sense benefiting the urinary, immune and digestive systems to mention a few. When a plant has a strong affinity for any organ in the body it is easy to zone in on this strength to the exclusion of the plants other qualities. Most herbs however have a number of beneficial actions and as an example take peppermint a popular mainstream herb, while this plant will indeed ease your stomach pain it is also good for the liver, sinus problems and cold and flu onset. Similarly elecampane will not only strengthen the lungs and it does this wonderfully, but it will also support and strengthen the stomach and the bladder and act as a tonic for the body relieving general fatigue. So the next time you are drinking your herbal tea think big and don’t narrow the plants therapeutic uses. Elecampane is a perennial plant and can be grown easily from root division though the plant also self-seeds and can be found in the wild. It can grow up to two metres high with clusters of yellow flowers which appear from June to August. This is a plant you cannot miss if you are fortunate enough to come across it and though I have it in my garden this is another plant I have not found growing in my area. Someone kindly rang me some weeks ago to tell me they had mugwort growing in their fields when I said I had not seen it growing in Corca Dhuibhne, so I am now the proud owner of this herb in my garden. So do let me know if you have spotted this tall graceful plant on our country roads.

As highlighted above elecampane is used primarily as a respiratory remedy. It is a stimulating expectorant, liquefying mucous so it can be expelled more easily, thus it is helpful for irritating bronchial coughs. The herb is also antimicrobial helping to clear any underlying infection and taken over the long term will help to tone and strengthen the lungs. Elecampane is therefore highly recommended for people with chronic bronchitis, asthma and general lung weakness. Kidney and bladder infections can also be reduced as can congestion in the urinary tract generally. Similarly mucous damp congestion in the digestive system manifesting with symptoms of poor appetite, indigestion, flatulence, bloating and fatigue can be alleviated with this herb, while the herbs bitter pungent qualities will help stimulate the appetite and prevent malabsorption with poor digestive assimilation whereby people are not getting maximum nourishment from food. Elecampane is also used as a supportive herb for diabetics as it helps regulate blood sugar levels. Elecampane is a tonic restorative herb and taken in the long-term can help to build immune potential increasing overall strength in the body and relieving fatigue. The herb’s bitter, warming, drying and astringing qualities help to resolve mucous damp conditions in the body particularly of the lungs, digestive organs and urinary tract. Its anti-microbial and anti-fungal actions can help to reduce infection especially of the lungs and kidneys. Preparation and Dosage; Decoction 4-10g Tincture 2-4ml three times daily A syrup can be made from the root for respiratory and throat conditions 32 West Kerry Live

Major Changes in Kerry under new round of LEADER funding Potential applicants are being advised that there are major changes to the process involved in accessing LEADER funding under the new programme that is due to start in Kerry in October. Both South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. (SKDP) and North, East & West Kerry Development (NEWKD) will be holding a series of public meetings in the coming weeks to advise those interested in applying for funding of the new requirements. Circa €10m is available under the new LEADER programme in Kerry which represents a 60% drop when compared to the last programme. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that in light of the major budget cuts for Kerry, which are down by some 60%, in addition to a number of other significant changes resulting from government policy decisions, significant changes have been made in the way the LEADER programme will be rolled out in the county this time. “Both the business and the community & voluntary sectors will be affected by these changes and we strongly recommend that as many people as possible attend the upcoming information meetings in order to ensure they are fully informed of the requirements” Noel said. He added that both SKDP and NEWKD will be putting information on the new LEADER programme on their websites in the coming weeks to help people become acquainted with the changes” Eamonn O’Reilly, CEO of NEWKD pointed out that the LEADER programme will be rolled out on a consistent basis across the county to help minimise confusion for those interested in applying. “One of the major changes under this round of LEADER is that applicants will have to submit projects seeking funding during specific periods or calls which is completely different to the approach taken under the previous programme” Eamonn said. “The approval process under the new round of LEADER is also likely to be significantly longer due to the Government policy changes” he added. SKDP’s public meetings will be held on Tuesday 13th in Kenmare (Brook Lane Hotel), Wednesday 14th in Cahersiveen, (Community Centre) Tuesday 20th in Killarney (Travel Inn) and Wednesday 21st in Killorglin (Library Place). All meetings start at 8pm. NEWKD will hold their meetings in Dingle (Skellig Hotel) on Wednesday 21st, Listowel (Seanachaí Centre) on Monday 26th, Castleisland (River Island) on Tuesday 27th and Tralee (Áras an Phobail) on Monday, 3rd of October. Expressions of Interest from applicants will be sought for projects under the headings of Rural Tourism, Enterprise Development, Rural Towns and Basic Services when the programme opens in the county on the 3rd of October. Full details of the LEADER Programme and its operation will be given to potential applicants and both Development Companies are encouraging people to attend.

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Cad is plean teanga ann? Tá cloiste ag gach duine ag an bpointe seo fén bplean teanga don Ghaeilge sa dúiche seo. Eiseofar an plean teanga ag deireadh na bliana seo, mar sin, tá sé tábhachtach tuiscint chruinn bheith againn ar cad is plean teanga ann. Anseo tugtar freagra achomair ar an gceist sin: Cad is plean teanga ann? Bíonn orainn go léir pleanáil a dhéanamh gach lá, ó phleanáil do bhéilí, do laetha saoire go pleanáil do oideachas ár gcuid leanaí. Ní mór pleanáil a dhéanamh do theangacha chomh maith céanna. Fiú i gcás na mórtheangacha domhanda ar nós an Bhéarla agus na Spáinnise, bíonn pleanáil leanúnach ar siúl maidir le téarmaí nua a chumadh do réimsí mar theicneolaíocht, ríomhaireacht agus leigheas nuair a chruthaítear rud nua. I gcás teangacha atá timpeallaithe ag mórtheangacha domhanda agus i gcás teangacha atá faoi bhagairt a mbáis, bíonn gá le síorphleanáil chun úsáid na dteangacha sin a neartú, a leathnú agus a bhuanú. Sin atá ag tarlú i gcás na Gaeilge anseo. Tá gá le plean a chur le chéile chun go mairfidh an Ghaeilge mar theanga phobail agus i dtreo is go mbeidh líon na daoine a úsáideann go laethúil í ag fás de shíor. Sin an chúis gur leag Acht na Gaeltachta 2012 próiseas pleanála teanga amach don Ghaeltacht. Faoin Acht seo, tá na ceantair Ghaeltachta ag cur plean teanga le chéile. Tá an próiseas seo ar siúl i gCorca Dhuibhne le tamall anuas. Reachtáladh fócasghrúpaí le páirithe leasmhara agus sainíodh spriocanna atá le baint amach tríd an bplean. Beidh tréimhse cuíosach fada chun na spriocanna sin a chur i bhfeidhm agus muna bhfuil ag éirí linn an sprioc a bhaint amach, beidh deis againn an sprioc a athrú nó sprioc eile a chur ina háit. Murab ionann agus pleananna eile a scríobhadh go dtí seo, is é an pobal féin atá ag cur an plean seo le chéile. Níl ann do theanga ná do phlean gan phobal. Déan deimhin de breis eolais a fháil fén bplean agus bíodh ionchur agat ann más suim todhchaí na teanga. *** Gaelainn Chorca Dhuibhne! Cá bhfuil na buachaillí go léir? Níl puinn acu sa rang seo. Life Long Learning
https://www.tarabrach.com/hope-can-heal-part1/)
Anne Healy “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince In my last four articles I spoke about what neuroscientist Dan Siegel in his book ‘Parenting from the Inside Out’ suggests as a means of helping enhance your parenting or carer skills. To recap, he recommends the following approaches to parenting - mindfulness, response flexibility lifelong learning, mindsight, and joyful living. This week I am covering the final approach, lifelong learning. You can read any of these articles on my website which is www.mindfulparentingadvice or on this magazines website. I will return in future articles to these approaches and how to put them in practice. There are many things to be said about lifelong learning. We can take up a new hobby, take a degree or jump from an aeroplane! But what I want to discuss here is how we can learn to change our thoughts and behaviours that are not serving us well. One thing that I have l learned from parents, carers and grandparents is that they often feel they do not measure up. Indeed this can pertain not just to parents but to many of us. Somehow some of us measure ourselves by what society says is acceptable. For example only the other day a young parent that I know told me how another parent said to her that she wondered why her daughter did not take part in school activities. This mother was upset as she took it upon herself to think that somehow maybe parents felt her child was different and this led my young friend to thinking she was doing something wrong as a parent. When we discussed this it turned out this mother agreed she needed to just accept her child just as she was and of course to accept herself as a parent. Her daughter does not like to appear in the Christmas play as her friends do, however this child loves to go out in nature and explore its wonders. As Rumi a 13th century Persian poet says ‘Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.” And there is our gift to take! Consider for a moment a question posed in a talk Tara Brach mediation teacher, author and psychologist asks - ‘When you feel most alive and most awake what you are doing”? Consider the question also on behalf of your child or ask them the question. I know when I asked myself the question one of the answers is I am most alive when I accept myself for who I am and not what the culture prescribes for me. It is not about one size fits all. That is the great thing about lifelong learning at any age we can change and in doing so enrich the lives of ourselves and our children. So how about this week if you are not doing so already, do something that you love doing, encourage your child to do something they love doing. Do it because it is your way ‘to kiss the ground’ … encourage your child to do it as it is their way ‘to kiss the ground’. If you feel that like me at times you do not measure up I recommend that you listen to Tara Brach’s talk which can be found on
To conclude, if any of you have had the pleasure of reading The Little Prince you will know how full of wisdom it is, it is a book for children of all ages, young and old! If you have not read it consider doing so for yourself and for your child. It takes us through the wonders and richness of childhood and has as an underlying theme how adults forget what is important in life as they get caught up in the business of life…. A wonderful quote from the little prince that I mention above is “And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” So look into your own heart, encourage your child to look in their heart for that which is not visible to the eye! People may judge us because we do act in the Christmas play, we may judge ourselves and feel we should be almost perfect beings. I recall now as I write this article what one of my five year old nephews said to me many moons ago, on picking him up from school I asked him how his test went. ‘Three wrong’ was his reply. I recall a thud in my heart as it brought home to me so starkly how at a young age we are already measuring ourselves on our failures instead of our success. When I asked him how many he got right he told me seventeen! Now that school has started, remember we can change and help children change messages that we believe about ourselves that do not serve us well. As always in my articles I recommend that if there is something that you struggle with personally or as a parent/carer speak to your doctor about meeting a therapist! Dingle Notes
CULTURE OÍCHE CHULTÚIR 2016 NIGHT 2016
Richie Williams Over 2500 people made up of 27 different nationalities took part in the recent Kerryman Dingle Half And Full Marathons over the Slea Head course now widely renowned as the most scenic course in the world. I wish to congratulate the promoters on the professional way in which they organise this annual event. I am reliably informed that the 2017 entry list is already nearly half full with overseas interest which should mean an even bigger spin off to the local tourist trade. The resulting traffic delays cause some annoyance and the promoters wish through these notes to thank the general public for their cooperation and patience and all who helped to make the day such a success for competitors, supporters and spectators.

The Dingle Tradfest was very well supported and despite the cutbacks in funding from various bodies the innovative programme provided plenty of entertainment at different venues around town. Comhgairdeas do gach einne a bhi pairteach sa Tradfest imbliana. The mention of the Dingle Food Festival on the first weekend in October makes me hungry already. What a popular weekend that had turned out to be and a wonderful opportunity for Dingle to exhibit to all and sundry why our area was chosen as the NO. 1 FOODIE TOWN in Ireland. The John Sheehy Memorial Blitz for under 10 footballers in West Kerry is fixed for Saturday October 8th and organised by Bord Na Nog Daingean Ui Chuis in Pairc An Aghasaigh. Following a well attended meeting re Community Alert last February it was agreed to progress the suggestion for the Dingle Area. However we are still awaiting a visit from the area organiser to get the plan set up as soon as possible!!!. Thankfully no serious incidents have occurred in this area recently but we encourage everybody to be vigilant at all times particularly with keys, doors, windows and money. Despite the continuous volume of tourist traffic in the Peninsula since March last some outlets are reporting a substantial decrease in turnover in their respective businesses this year compared to the past few years. With this in mind can we appeal to everybody to consider the local shops/outlets/services and Shop Local This Christmas first before travelling to outside areas and support local employment if at all possible. We do have a fine variety and selection of outlets in and around our town and it would be very sad to see closures and job losses however big or small which could be avoided but for a little more local support on a regular basis.

The judges report on the annual Supervalu Tidy Towns competition should be published shortly and we will see then what they thought of our efforts this year and outline the main points in the next edition. The new project at Milltown is progressing and we are looking for ideas on how best to present this site while retaining the character of the area. The Business Chamber are actively promoting the early development of the proposed new Link Road from Spa Road to Upper Goat Street which would alleviate some of the traffic congestion and parking problems which were a continuous headache once again this year. It is proposed to have an open meeting in early October to get the views of the public on the parking problem so get your thinking caps on and usually such problems are best remedied by local solutions. Kerry Airport 5k Run On Friday October 7th, a 5k fun run will take place on the runway at Kerry Airport to raise funds for Build4Life, the charity which was set up after the death of young Dingle woman, Mary Hand in 2006. The aim of the charity is to develop life saving isolation inpatient and outpatient facilities for adults and children with Cystic Fibrosis attending Cork University Hospital which will allow them to enter the hospital environment free from the risk of cross infection. Prior to the development of these facilities people with Cystic Fibrosis were constantly exposed to cross infection which reduced their life expectancy. 25% of Irelands CF population attend CUH. Paternity Benefit Question My partner and I are expecting a baby in September. Can I claim the new Paternity Benefit? Are there any other benefits I can claim? Answer Paternity Benefit is a new payment for employed and self-employed people who are on paternity leave from work and covered by social insurance (PRSI). to apply for Paternity Benefit. You can also claim up to 18 weeks of unpaid parental leave from work (until your child’s eighth birthday - or 16th if they have a disability). Both parents have a separate entitlement to 18 weeks’ parental leave.
Paternity Benefit is paid for two weeks (in one block) and is available for any child born or adopted on or after 1 September 2016. You can start paternity leave at any time within the first 6 months following the birth or adoption placement. If you are already getting certain social welfare payments, then you may get half-rate Paternity Benefit. You must notify your employer four weeks before you intend to go on paternity leave (12 weeks if you are self-employed). You must provide proof of the expected date of birth (this is a certificate from your spouse’s or partner’s doctor confirming when the baby is due) or confirmation of the birth if you are applying after the baby has been born. Stress Fractures of the Foot Eddie O’ Grady A stress fracture is a small crack in a bone (in this case). The weight-bearing bones of the foot are especially susceptible to stress fractures because of the significant repetitive forces they must absorb during activities. Stress fractures occur most often in the metatarsals of the foot (the second and third metatarsals usually). This is the area taking most impact on your foot when you walk, run or jump. Other common areas of the foot susceptible to stress fractures are the calcaneous and the navicular bones of the foot. Most stress fractures are caused by overuse, over a period of time, when repetitive forces result in microscopic damage to the bone. Bone is in a constant state of turnover (remodelling), where new bone develops and replaces older bone. If an athlete’s activity is too great, the breakdown of older bone occurs more rapidly than the body’s ability to repair and replace it. This can result in a stress fracture. Other contributors to stress fractures can include bone insufficiency due to poor diet (low calcium, vitamin D intake etc.), medications, osteoporosis etc., obesity, poor exercise technique, poor running shoes, and building up training levels too quickly so the body does not get time to adapt. Stress fractures can also be caused by a once off heavy impact ie. a fall. Symptoms The most common symptom of a stress fracture in the foot is pain. The pain usually develops gradually and worsens during weight-bearing activity. Other symptoms may include: •
Pain that diminishes during rest
•
Pain that occurs and intensifies during normal, daily activities
•
Swelling on or around the fractured bone site
•
Tenderness to touch at the site of the fracture
•
Possible bruising
Diagnosis Often when an experienced practitioner squeezes the area between their fingers they are able to identify a stress fracture with reasonable certainty, because there is a significant pain response. Obviously a detailed history take along with recognising the symptoms listed above also aids diagnosis. More accurate tests to identify stress fractures include Xray, MRI, or a bone scan. Treatment Treatment includes rest and/or modified activity, ice and anti-inflammatory medication. It may be necessary to use crutches in order to keep weight off your foot until the pain subsides. Other nonsurgical treatments include: casting of the foot or wearing rigid protective footwear. Some stress fractures require surgery to heal properly. In most cases, this involves supporting the bones by pins, screws, or plates to hold the small bones of the foot and ankle together during the healing process. The majority of stress fractures are treated nonsurgically. Recovery In most cases, it takes from 6 to 8 weeks for a stress fracture to heal. Eddie O’ Grady Bsc. (hons.) M.I.A.P.T. Breathe Easy this Autumn
us for the heartier cooking of the Winter months. Beans, seeds and nuts added to slow-cooked meals provide omega 3, magnesium and B vitamins. Omega 3 is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties and used widely for joint and heart health. It also helps to reduce allergy mechanisms which trigger asthma and improves linings of the eyes, respiratory tract and the digestive tract. Eskimo people have a low prevalence of all lung disease and this is mainly due to the high intake of omega 3 through fish oil and blubber found in their native diet. Magnesium is particularly beneficial to lungs as it helps to dilate airways and relax the muscles around the bronchi thus reducing spasms associated with Asthma. Researchers found a significant association between highest blood levels of folic acid and a 30% reduced risk in inflammatory protein, 40% reduced risk in wheezing, 31% reduced risk of having atopy and 16% reduced risk in asthma compared to those with the lowest levels of folic acid. Black beans and lentils provide the highest dietary levels of folic acid. Other great foods for the lungs, and indeed the eyes and large intestine include dark green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and dark skinned fruits – all of which make a perfect meal for Autumn days!
Irene Ní Fhlannúra
Autumn, the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” as John Keats described it way back in September 1819 and it still remains a fitting description. Despite all the news of climate change, Seasons remain fairly consistent as far as Mother Nature is concerned. In Autumn, Earth energy begins its journey downwards, shifting from the high of Summer to the low of Winter. In between, we really experience two seasons, Late Summer and Autumn, but our modern calendars say otherwise. With each of the five seasons, different organ systems are nourished through the food in season, the weather outside, our natural environment and our innate ability to go with the flow. It is widely accepted in Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine that to truly attune with the seasons is the best prevention of all disease, discord and disharmony! Earth energy moves along in a cyclical manner throughout the year and as it flows through us during Autumn it nourishes and tonifies our Lungs. Now is the best time to give those airbags some TLC, they work hard, taking up to 25,000 breaths a day! For many Irish people lung health is a struggle. We have the 4th highest prevalence of Asthma in the World with almost one in ten people suffering from this chronic condition. We are also high in the rankings for lung cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Throw into the mix bronchitis, pneumonia, chest infections and seasonal allergies and it becomes very apparent that our lungs are besieged and in desperate need of help! The foods in season during Autumn nourish the Lungs and their related organs - the eyes and large intestine. Betacarotene-rich foods such as carrots, butternut squash and pumpkin are at their best now. The orange pigment of these vegetables is due to betacarotene, a flavonoid most beneficial to the linings of the intestines, nose, the airways and lungs, offering strength and support to their integrity and also an important nutrient to eye health. Supporting these organs now, will offer resistance to the bugs and viruses typically associated with this time of year – tummy bugs, flus, colds and chest ailments.
Foods such as milk, eggs and salt are generally off the menu for those with lung health issues. Milk and egg allergies are common triggers among asthma sufferers. Salt encourages fluid retention which can make breathing more difficult. Use a little real salt in cooking if needed but avoid adding salt to meals at the table as well as restricting salty foods and processed foods. Interestingly, salt therapy and saline rinsing of the nose have shown great benefits to lung and respiratory health and offer the best use of salt for anyone with respiratory disorders. Breathing techniques such as Buteyko have proven to improve the outcome of many respiratory diseases and warrant inclusion in the overall management of lung disease. Whether you have existing lung issues or want to prevent developing one, trust Mother Nature to be in the right place at the right time! Flavours associated with Autumn are pungent - bay leaves, capers, caraway seeds, cardamom, chives, cinnamon, cloves, cumquats, dill, fennel, leek, oregano, nutmeg, rosemary, thyme, turmeric, watercress, wheat germ, cabbage, turnip, ginger, horseradish, pepper, onions, garlic and chillies. These foods are drying, complementing the season and helping to reduce dampness in the body which is a precursor to most respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Of course, it is not a surprise that these flavours also complement the foods of the season and prepares

The Heart and Soul of Kerry Football
2016
le
Weeshie Fogarty foilsithe ag O’Brien Press ‘Why has Kerry, in the rugged south-west, won more All-Ireland Gaelic football championships than any other county? It’s a fascinating question, and The Heart and Soul of Kerry Football provides plenty of answers. Weeshie Fogarty tells stories about the great players he played with and against, Kerry’s intense rivalries and its outstanding captains. He extols the handing down of a unique tradition, and explains why the increasing profile of girls and women bodes well for the future of the sport. Weeshie also selects his all-time most skilful/classy/stylish team, which is sure to spark debate in the homes and pubs of Kerry. Gaelic football is the very heartbeat of Irish life and culture, both in the Kingdom and beyond, and players and coaches from the most successful county have grown the sport in Ireland and internationally.
