Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The feature at the Dingle Film Club on Tuesday 18th September will be the contemporary

romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians. The film follows native New Yorker Rachel Chu as she accompanies her longtime boyfriend, Nick, to his best friend's wedding in Singapore. Excited about visiting Asia for the first time but nervous about meeting Nick's family, Rachel is unprepared to learn that Nick has neglected to mention a few key details about his life. It turns out that he is not only the scion of one of the country's wealthiest families but also one of its most sought-after bachelors. It soon becomes clear that while money can't buy love, it can definitely complicate things. The following week on Tuesday 25th September the feature will be the famine drama Black 47. The film follows an Irish Ranger who has been fighting for the British Army abroad, as he abandons his post to reunite with his family. Despite experiencing the horrors of war, he is shocked by the famine's destruction of his homeland and the brutalization of his people and his family. He sets on a destructive path to avenge his family, systematically working his way up the political and social hierarchy of 19th Century Ireland. An ageing British soldier and famed tracker of deserters, is sent to stop him before he can further stoke the fires of revolution. 4 West Kerry Live

Tourism: With the tourist season winding down slowly it is time to think about this year and planning for the future. The Business Chamber have been asked from a number of different parties to organise a meeting to address areas which appear to be under stress. Some topics needing attention include capacity, pricing, taxis, infrastructure, parking, the after affects of Brexit, Trump’s agenda fall out and a possible down turn

Farming News Demand for Kerry Co-op EGM A group of Kerry Co-op members are seeking support for their demand to hold an extraordinary general meeting (EGM). The members are pressing for an EGM to request a vote on spinning-out the co-op's €2.2bn shareholding in Kerry Group Plc. This group want to sell its remaining 13.7pc stake in Kerry Group Plc and share the dividends among the society's members. This would result in an average pay-out of around €165,000 per co-op shareholder. The Kerry Co-op Shareholders Alliance confirmed to the Farming Independent that the grouping was seeking to secure an EGM. Serious differences over the future direction of Kerry Co-op have opened up between the board and a section of the co-op's shareholders, some of whom are represented by the Kerry Co-op Shareholders Alliance. Kerry Co-op board has suggested using the shareholding to fund the purchase of the agritrading arm of Kerry Group Plc, or to establish a milk processing venture by way of a partnership or merger with another trading entity. Both of these options were set out in a consultative document which was sent to shareholders earlier this summer. However, the Kerry Co-op Shareholders Alliance want a spin-out of the co-op's shareholding. Kerry Co-op Shareholders Alliance confirmed that the grouping is calling for an EGM to vote on spinning out the €2.2bn stake. The shareholder alliance is also seeking the resignation of the Kerry Co-op chairman Mundy Hayes, as the option to spin-out these shares is no longer available to them due to tax considerations. Apparently Kerry Co-op is not opposed to the spin out of shares but this facility to spin out under Section 701 is not available to the Co-op, any more. The Alliance is trying to securing the support of 20pc of Kerry A and B shareholders to call an EGM, to get this €2.2bn released. This share spin-out would be worth around €165,000 per co-op shareholder on average. Dept Issues Advice On Use Of Antibiotics For Foot Bathing Cattle In recent times, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, (DAFM) has received queries about the use of soluble antibiotic powders, including erythromycin and lincomycin, in footbaths to treat lameness, mainly caused by digital dermatitis in cows. Bovine lameness can be a serious issue particularly in dairy herds, leading to welfare issues and economic loss, therefore it is essential that lameness is correctly diagnosed and that an effective lameness control programme is implemented by the farmer in conjunction with the herd veterinary practitioner. There are currently no antibiotics licensed in Ireland for use in footbaths however, there are other licensed treatments available. Recent research has shown that the use of antibiotic foot baths only provides short-lived relief for affected cattle, with many cattle remaining acutely or chronically infected. The practice of using antibiotics in foot bathing solutions for cattle is based on their use ‘off-label’ – that is using a product for a purpose for which it is not authorised. The unauthorised use of a veterinary medicine carries a significant risk to public health, due to potential residues in milk or meat in treated animals, contribution to antimicrobial resistance, and possible environmental contamination. Unauthorised use of veterinary medicines in food producing animals poses reputational risks to our agri-food sector. The antibiotics that DAFM has received queries about in relation to foot bathing cattle are among our most critically important antimicrobials. These antimicrobials are of huge importance in treating life-threatening infections in humans. Improved animal health and disease prevention, and using antimicrobials only when necessary in food animals are key steps to reducing the development and spread of antibiotic resistance. Bovine lameness is a complex issue with many causes and is costly for a herd. The underlying cause should be diagnosed by a Veterinary Practitioner. Digital dermatitis, commonly known as ‘Mortellaro’ is one specific cause of lameness, this is caused by bacteria and can be a very painful condition, resulting in welfare implications for animals in the herd. GLAS Farmers Granted Derogation On Low Input Permanent Pasture In relation to the GLAS actions of Low Input Permanent Pasture (LIPP) the following amendments apply. GLAS LIPP parcels can be cut for hay or silage between 1st Sept 2018 and 30 Nov 2018. Standard GLAS requirements apply from Dec 1st 2018 onwards. This amendment is being introduced to support the production of fodder on Irish farms in the 12 West Kerry Live

light of exceptional weather conditions. It applies to 2018 only. Farmers availing of this derogation must return to standard practices as outlined in the GLAS specifications from December 1st 2018 onwards. All actions undertaken on GLAS parcels, including the above derogations, must be recorded under the relevant section on the GLAS Record Sheets. Please notify your GLAS advisor prior to carrying out any other non-regulation activities necessitated by the recent hot weather. Commissioner Phil Hogan Warns Irish Dairy Farmers Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner, Phil Hogan has warned the Irish dairy sector that it must maintain its reputation for producing products of the highest standards of safety and sustainability. Speaking at the FC STONE Dairy Conference recently, he said that broadly speaking, the European dairy sector has a good story to tell, and good prospects for the future. But went on to say that “we have to be honest about the potential pitfalls that lie ahead”. The appealing image of dairy cows eating grass in wide open fields is a very successful selling point for Irish products. However, if that reputation for quality and sustainability is compromised in any way, there is a clear and present danger of a negative market impact. He used the Netherlands as a cautionary example in Ireland before, and for good reason. The Dutch dairy industry has been dealing with an ongoing phosphate problem which has resulted in the reduction of the Dutch dairy herd by around 122,000 cows over nine months, with a consequent reduction in phosphate and nitrates production. Currently, Dutch milk supply has fallen by 1.5pc. CAP Payments Hogan also spoke on reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and said that despite the difficult budgetary context of Brexit and other new EU challenges such as security and migration, the Commission has proposed a strong budget for agriculture. Direct payments to farmers will be cut moderately, by no more than 4%, according to the Commissioner. This reduction is complemented with a proposal to achieve greater equity in direct payments per hectare, by means of continued convergence, degressivity and capping, again according the Mr Hogan. He also highlighted that the direct payments envelope for Ireland in the next budget is €8.15 billion, a reduction of 3.9pc compared to the 2020 baseline allocation. For rural development, he said the Commission proposes to rebalance EU and national support, so that public support to European rural areas remains largely unchanged. Concern That Scale Of Lamb Kill Is Affecting Price Figures released by the Department of Agriculture show that ewe and ram slaughtering's have increased by almost 52,000 compared to the same period last year, an increase of 19pc. Weekly data show a more dramatic increase of ewe and ram slaughtering’s up by 75pc in the last week of August compared to last year, over 5,000 head of a difference. This is causing some concern as cull ewe slaughtering’s are up this year and this directly impacts on price. 2018 has been an extremely difficult year for sheep farmers, through a combination of major losses last winter, huge increase in feed costs including throughout the summer. Sheep farmers are approaching a critical time with regard to planning ewe numbers and it is essential that factories not take advantage of the situation. Farmers need a minimum of €100 per lamb and at prices at €4.80/kg, many lambs are struggling to make this. Ploughing Championship The Annual Ploughing Championship takes place again, this week coming from week, this time in Screggan, Tullamore, Co Offaly from 18th–20th September. For those first timers, this is just outside the town, on the Rathcormac Road, south of the town. Those travelling may remember the previous location with it’s ease of access due to its proximity to the M7 motorway, outside Portlaoise. Don’t be put of by this year’s location, access was reportedly easy and traffic moved fast last year. It’s a bit further north, and much more distant from the motorway, so additional planning and travel time will be needed This is both Irelands and Europe's largest Outdoor Exhibition and Agricultural Trade Show, which saw last year’s attendance hit 281,000 attendees and over 1,500 delighted exhibitors. It is the 87th year of the event, and there are not many out there who remember the first one, not to mind having attended it. What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís The next 6-week session of Dingle Coder Dojo will start on Friday, 5th October at 3:00pm in its new home at the Dingle Hub. This is a great way for kids to start coding or expand on what they already know! Register now on www. dingledojo.com and see the advert in this issue for further details. There will also be a MegaDojo in IT Tralee on the 13th October and more information on this can be found at www.megadojo.ie ESB Networks are working on a project called StoreNet which aims to reduce energy costs for residents, relieve pressure on the grid during peak times and contribute to our transition to a low carbon society. There are opportunities for 20 homeowners in the Ballyferriter and surrounding areas to get involved and avail of home energy storage devices that can be programmed to store energy at times of lower tariffs and then utilised in the home during the day when tariffs are higher. Five of these homes will also receive Solar PV. Participants must be homeowners and Electric Ireland customers. There is also an opportunity for certified electricians to install the batteries for this project and for the broader ESB Networks Dingle Project in the future. Contact info@dinglehub.com for further information on how to get involved. We’re busy preparing for the Farmer’s Forum during the Dingle Food Festival where we would like to share the information we have been gathering recently in relation to o Sustainable Agriculture and Energy opportunities. With the possibility of selling, through a licensed smart microgrid operator, to local customers, we think a community scale generation project involving anaerobic digestion (AD), combined heat and power (CHP) biogas, biofuel and solar PV has the potential to provide an economically viable path to energy independence. We met the Gas Networks Ireland team at the International Energy Agency Symposium last week and they will sponsor the event and share their vision for how bioenergy and biofuel can drive the move towards a low carbon society. They see this new energy source as having the potential to reduce our emissions, increase our energy independ-

ence and create a new source of jobs and income for rural communities and Irish farms. Claremorris and Western District Energy Co-op will bring along their mobile AD demonstrator to show us this technology in action. The Sustainability Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) will also outline the different funding opportunities and supports that are available for energy efficiency and renewable energy at home, on farms and within the community. With talks also from the Marine and Renewable Energy Institute, Teagasc and Thomas O’Connor of Manna Organic Store the event is shaping up to provide much food for thought so we hope to see you all there! Roasted Cauliflower and Bacon Gratin with Cheddar Dumplings

200g self-raising flour

For the cheddar dumplings

1 tsp baking powder

In a bowl mix the butter with the flour and the baking powder until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add a pinch of salt and mix in the grated cheddar. Pour in the milk and mix until it forms a dough. Shape this into a log, cut in 8 or 10 pieces.

75g extra mature cheddar, finely grated 100ml milk For the garnish

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

handful of hazeluts, toasted and crushed bunch parsley, chopped

Remove the cauliflower dish from the oven and place the dumplings on top pressing them into the liquid. Place back in the oven and bake for a further 15 – 20 minutes.

This is pure comfort food made well. Cauliflower, bacon and cheddar – a classic combination. I have roasted the cauliflower to give it even more flavour to add depth to the dish. For the cheese, I would recommend using something like a two year old Coolattin cheddar which is full of flavour and will add another dimension to this dish.

1 lemon, zested

For the garnish

Method

Heat a pan over medium heat, add a knob of butter and the breadcrumbs until well coated. Mix in the hazelnuts, lemon and parsley. Take this mixture and spread it generously over the dumplings and place back in the oven for 2 minutes.

Ingredients For the gratin 1 head of cauliflower, cut into florets rapeseed oil salt and pepper 200g smoked streaky rashers, cut into lardons 1 onion, sliced pinch of nutmeg 200ml cream For the cheddar dumplings 20g butter, diced

100g breadcrumbs

For the gratin Preheat the oven to 180oC. Heat a pan over a medium heat and allow it to get hot. Add a little oil to the pan and then add the cauliflower florets, allowing them to cook for about 2-3 minutes then give the pan a little shake so they become brown on all sides. Once they have browned, remove from the pan, wipe the pan clean and place it back over the heat. Add a little oil and add the bacon. Cook this for about 4-5 minutes. Now add the onions and turn the heat down slightly. Continue to cook this for about 10 minutes until the onions have softened. Add the cream to the pan with some salt, black pepper and a pinch of nutmeg (not too much salt as the bacon contains salt). Cook this for about 3 minutes until the cream has thickened slightly. Mix the browned cauliflower back into the pan with the bacon and mix well. Put this mixture into an ovenproof dish and bake for 20 minutes.

Enjoy!!!

Breathe Easy this Autumn Irene Ní Fhlannúra

and relax the muscles around the bronchi thus reducing spasms associated with Asthma. Researchers found a significant association between highest blood levels of folic acid and a 30% reduced risk in inflammatory protein, 40% reduced risk in wheezing, 31% reduced risk of having atopy and 16% reduced risk in asthma compared to those with the lowest levels of folic acid. Black beans and lentils provide the highest dietary levels of folic acid. Other great foods for the lungs, and indeed the eyes and large intestine include dark green leafy vegetables, cruciferous vegetables and dark skinned fruits – all of which make a perfect meal for Autumn days! Foods such as milk, eggs and salt are generally off the menu for those with lung health issues. Milk and egg allergies are common triggers among asthma sufferers. Salt encourages fluid retention which can make breathing more difficult. Use a little real salt in cooking if needed but avoid adding salt to meals at the table as well as restricting salty foods and processed foods. Interestingly, salt therapy and saline rinsing of the nose have shown great benefits to lung and respiratory health and offer the best use of salt for anyone with respiratory disorders. Breathing techniques such as Buteyko improve the outcome of many respiratory diseases and warrant inclusion in the overall management of lung disease. Whether you have existing lung issues or want to prevent developing one, trust Mother Nature to be in the right place at the right time!

Autumn, the “Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” as John Keats described it way back in September 1819 and it still remains a fitting description. Despite all the news of climate change, Seasons remain fairly consistent as far as Mother Nature is concerned. In Autumn, Earth energy begins its journey downwards, shifting from the high of Summer to the low of Winter. In between, we really experience two seasons, Late Summer and Autumn, but our modern calendars say otherwise. With each of the five seasons, different organ systems are nourished through the food in season, the weather outside, our natural environment and our innate ability to go with the flow. It is widely accepted in Traditional Chinese medicine and Ayurvedic medicine that to truly attune with the seasons is the best prevention of all disease, discord and disharmony! Earth energy moves along in a cyclical manner throughout the year and as it flows through us during Autumn it nourishes and tonifies our Lungs. Now is the best time to give those airbags some TLC, they work hard, taking up to 25,000 breaths a day! For many Irish people lung health is a struggle. We have the 4th highest prevalence of Asthma in the World with almost one in ten people suffering from this chronic condition. We are also high in the rankings for lung cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Throw into the mix bronchitis, pneumonia, chest infections and seasonal allergies and it becomes very apparent that our lungs are besieged and in desperate need of help! The foods in season during Autumn nourish the Lungs and their related organs - the eyes and large intestine. Betacarotene-rich foods such as carrots, butternut squash and pumpkin are at their best now. The orange pigment of these vegetables is due to betacarotene, a flavonoid most beneficial to the linings of the intestines, nose, the airways and lungs, offering strength and support to their integrity and also an important nutrient to eye health. Supporting these organs now, will offer resistance to the bugs and viruses typically associated with this time of year – tummy bugs, flus, colds and chest ailments. Flavours associated with Autumn are pungent - bay leaves, capers, caraway seeds, cardamom, chives, cinnamon, cloves, cumquats, dill, fennel, leek, oregano, nutmeg, rosemary, thyme, turmeric, watercress, wheat germ, cabbage, turnip, ginger, horseradish, pepper, onions, garlic and chillies. These foods are drying, complementing the season and helping to reduce dampness in the body which is a precursor to most respiratory and gastrointestinal infections. Of course, it is not a surprise that these flavours also complement the foods of the season and prepares us for the heartier cooking of the Winter months. Beans, seeds and nuts added to slow-cooked meals provide omega 3, magnesium and B vitamins. Omega 3 is well-known for its anti-inflammatory properties and used widely for joint and heart health. It also helps to reduce allergy mechanisms which trigger asthma and improves linings of the eyes, respiratory tract and the digestive tract. Eskimo people have a low prevalence of all lung disease and this is mainly due to the high intake of omega 3 through fish oil and blubber found in their native diet. Magnesium is particularly beneficial to lungs as it helps to dilate airways 20 West Kerry Live

Camphill News Hello to all of our friends in the community, here are some of the updates of the coming and goings within the community. Firstly, a huge welcome to Fridtjof and Antonia, who are joining us from Germany and will be with us for the next year. We look forward to the year ahead! September as always, is a busy month here in Camphill with the beginning of Autumn. On the 29th of September, we celebrate Michaelmas festival which is the celebration of the food grown on the land throughout the year. A festival which is thoroughly enjoyed by all in Camphill and a chance for us all to enjoy the fruits of our labour throughout the year! We have a community feast together to celebrate this festival. Once again we would like to thank the community in our latest fundraising drive for our new wheelchair accessible bus. On the 17th and 18th of August we did a bucket collection for two days where the local community donated a staggering €4,723. Another big thank you to Suzanne Hall who fundraised €700 on behalf of Camphill by taking part in the hugely difficult Ironman Challenge in August. On 28th and 29th of September we hope to attend the Disabled Drivers Motor Show on in the RDS in Dublin which will showcase the best options in adapting a vehicle best suited to our needs. We will, of course, keep you all updated on the purchase of our new bus. Thanks again to all of our friends in the local community for your continued support. - Camphill Community

2018

It’s that time of year again folks, the countdown has begun for Ireland’s largest Food Taste Trail. The Dingle Food Festival 2018, Féile Bia Daingean Uí Chúis, will run from Friday 5th October until Sunday 7th October 2018.

Rinse stations are conveniently situated around the town for you to clean your dishes between tastings. New this year are water refill points, located next to the rinse stations, where you can refill your water bottle for free thanks to support from Kerry County Council. To further reduce our plastic waste, most food outlets are using compostable containers and cutlery which can be reused or disposed of in the compost bins at each rinse station. Participating vendors will be awarded the green footprint logo so look out for stall holders and taste trail venues with this logo. While our aim is to reduce waste completely, compostables will give us a helping hand on the road to becoming a zero waste festival. Transition Corca Dhuibhne's volunteers are pioneering these initiatives in an effort to make the festival waste free by 2020. Together we can make our festival a greener one, join us and 'be a taster, not a waster'.

Blas na hÉireann

Now in it’s 12th year, the festival highlight is of course the mouthwatering tasty delights that are on offer in the pubs, shops, restaurants, galleries & cafes throughout Dingle town. This year a whopping 78 locations have signed up for the Taste Trail. To partake on the Taste Trail you will have to purchase the Taste Trail tickets. Tickets are available from the festival office during the weekend of the festival & over 20 outlets throughout the town - see end of page for outlets.

Also taking place during the weekend is Blas na hEireann, The Irish Food Awards. It is the biggest competition for quality Irish produce on the island of Ireland. Over the weekend Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards will be announced in 100 food and drink categories as well as key awards such as Supreme Champion and Best Artisan Producer. Best of luck to everyone taking part this year, in particular all our local producers.

Taste Trail Tickets - Tickets Only, No Cash!

Something for Everyone

The main income to run the festival comes from the sale of taste trail ticket books. Despite the festival growing massively, the sale of books has not. The reason for that is because festival goers are using cash instead of buying books and businesses on the trail are advertising that festival goers can pay cash or use a ticket. This year the committee has asked all taste trail businesses not to offer a cash option. The original aim of the festival was always for the trail to operate on tickets only so there was an income to actually run the festival. We are asking everyone this year, festival goers & businesses on the trail, to please support the tickets for the festival. A book of Taste Trail tickets contains 9 tickets, worth €2 each. The cost of the book is €20.00 with €2 going towards the successful running of the festival. We hope you agree €20 for what the festival offers all weekend is very very good value for money.

The Dingle Town Park will be taken over with a full programme of children’s events on the Saturday and Sunday. Bring along the kids to see Kingdom Falconry, Zumba dancing, bouncy castles, Dingle Bumper Ballz, Brickx Club and much more! The Dingle Oceanworld educational team will also be hosting special workshops demonstrating exciting marine science.

Shuttle Bus

The streets of Dingle will be lined with tasty treats to purchase and sample, as over 50 market stall holders set up on the Saturday and Sunday. Outdoor live music and street entertainment will add to the fantastic atmosphere. We have The Great Dingle / Daingean Uí Chúis Bake Off, Whiskey Masterclasses, Cheese & Wine Masterclasses, Beer and Cider Craft Trail and much much more…

This year there will a shuttle bus running from the Údarás na Gaeltachta car park & the Dingle Distillery car park at Ballyhea into town. We encourage all those travelling from west of Dingle to avail of this facility. We will be trying to steer customers coming into town to also use this facility. The bus will run from 11:30am until 7pm at a cost of €2.

Cookery Demonstrations in St. James Church Talented chefs from across Ireland and from our own Dingle town will be cooking up delights in St. James Church. On Saturday we are delighted to welcome Wade Murphy from Restaurant 1826 in Adare, Karen Coakley the Kenmare Food Blogger and Eddie Attwell from Eccles Hotel Glengarriff & tv's Great British Menu fame. On Sunday Mark Murphy from The Dingle Cookery School and Little Cheese Shop will be joined by JP McMahon of Galway’s Anair and Cava, followed by our own Louise Brosnan from Solas Tapas and Jean Marie Vaireaux from Out Of The Blue. The Demos are free of charge but all donations will go towards the restoration fund of the historical St. James Church.

Workshops Workshops will take place at the The Courthouse Building on The Mall & Nellifreds Garage on the Spa Road. This year you can learn how to raise poultry, keep bees, grow herbs, ferment & make herbal remedies at home. For children there are workshops on healthy food & Oceanworld are running some fun workshops .

ESB Networks, who are sponsoring the markets for the Festival, recently launched the Dingle Project which will help achieve a sustainable low carbon future. They would be delighted for you to visit their stand to learn about the benefits of the new technology. This years Farmers Forum, will take place at 8pm on Friday in An Diseart, will be entitled “Farming & Energy – a Time of Transition?”.

St Brendan’s Oratory/ Séipéilín Bhréanainn, Cill Maoilchéadair Isabel Bennett

Sáipéal beag atá sa bhfoirgneamh seo agus é tógtha sa stíl chéanna atá in aireagal Ghallaruis. Ach tá sé ina fhothrach fén am seo. Cuid de láthair mhainistreach Chill Maoilchéadair is ea é cé go bhfuil sé lasmuigh den bpríomhionad. N’fheadar sinn an raibh falla cosanta mórthimpeall air riamh. Cé go raibh sé dúnta don phobal le cúpla bliain anuas, d’athosclaíodh anuraidh é agus is fiú cuairt a thabhairt air mara bhfuil san déanta agat go dtí seo. Is féidir teacht air trasna an bhóthair ón dteampall nua ar an gCill, téir tríd an ngeata, agus siúil suas an cosán. For several years the monument known as ‘St Brendan’s Oratory’ had not been open to the public, but, last year, the scaffolding was taken down, and the swing gate was reopened, and now this little gem is available for all to see. Entry to it is to be found just across the road from the west side of the new graveyard at Cill Maoilchéadair. Pass through the swing gate and along the narrow fenced path, and you will reach it after about 180m. This National Monument is situated about 400m north-west of the important ecclesiastic site of Cill Maoilchéadair, and was certainly associated with that site, perhaps as some form of chapel of ease, or it might have had its own special dedication. There may originally have been an enclosure wall of some kind surrounding it, as well as other features no longer visible. The chapel, orientated east-west, with the (lintelled) door to the west as is usual in Christian churches, is built in a similar style to the far betterpreserved and better-known church at the nearby monastic site at Gallarus, but this one no longer has its roof intact. Inside, under the east window, is an altar, but this is probably a late insertion. Although not a particularly common form of construction throughout most of the country, these ‘upturned boat-shaped oratories’ are to be found at several sites in west and south-west Kerry, but with the only surviving roofed examples being the two on Sceilg Mhichíl, and the church at Gallarus. It is difficult to be definite about the date of construction, but it has been suggested that some examples could have been built as late as the 9th or 10th centuries AD. This particular building has recently featured in the publicity for an exhibition currently on in the Collins Barracks branch of the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin. ‘Stones, Slabs and Seascapes’ (https://www.museum.ie/ 28 West Kerry Live

Decorative-Arts-History/Exhibitions/CurrentExhibitions/Stones,-Slabs-and-SeascapesGeorge-Victor-du-Noyer) features the work of geologist and antiquarian Georges du Noyer, who sketched many places on the Dingle Peninsula, including this one. The exhibition finishes on 30 September, and is highly recommended

Lumbosacral Plexopathy Eddie O’Grady Frozen Shoulder – ”Adhesive Capsulitis” Frozen shoulder, also known as ''adhesive capsulitis'' is a condition where the shoulder joint (glenohumeral joint), and connective tissue surrounding it including the capsule becomes inflamed and stiff, greatly restricting movement of the joint and causing chronic pain. Commonly the patient continues to use the arm until the pain and stiffness progresses to the extent where it interferes severely with daily activities. It is usually at this point that the patient becomes presents for treatment. What causes ”Frozen Shoulder”? There is a capsule like structure that encapsulates and surrounds the shoulder the shoulder joints. Within this joint capsule ligaments attach the shoulder bones to each other. When this capsule becomes inflamed and tight, the shoulder bones are unable to move freely, severely restricting upper arm movement. Often there is no obvious cause for frozen shoulder, however risk factors include cervical disc disease of neck, poor posture, diabetes, previous shoulder injury, previous shoulder surgery, open heart surgery, hyperthyroidism ( Miller R.H. and Dlabach, J.A., 2007). Symptoms The main symptoms of frozen shoulder are decreased range of movement in the shoulder, along with severe pain and stiffness. Classically frozen shoulder occurs in three stages: (1) Freezing – where you slowly have more and more pain. As the pain worsens your shoulder looses range of motion. Freezing typically lasts from six weeks to six months.(2) Frozen – painful symptoms may actually improve during this stage, but the stiffness remains. This can last four to six months during which shoulder ac-

tivity is very difficult. (3) Thawing phase – during which shoulder motion slowly improves. Complete return to normal or close to normal strength and motion typically takes from six months to two years without treatment(Tveita et al. 2008; Tasto, J.P. and Elias D.W., 2007; Hand, C. et al., 2008; Hand G.C. et al., 2007). Physical therapy can usually considerably shortens this time-span. Often I have successfully treated this condition to ninety percent recovery within two to three months. The treatment is intense however and also depends on patients doing home stretches etc. religiously. I have sometimes seen shoulder conditions misdiagnosed as frozen shoulder. One striking feature with true frozen shoulder is that the person will not be able to lift up their arm, but neither will anybody else be able to lift that arm, because of the stiffness. With other shoulder injuries, the arm can often be lifted by the injured person or with assistance from somebody else even though there maybe pain during the movement. Treatment

more productive. Once the pain is under control, deep tissue massage of the area with progressive mobilizations of the joint and gentle stretching of the tightened tissue surrounding it is recommended. When pain has reduced and the shoulder has reached a reasonable level of mobility, home exercises involving progressive stretching and strengthening of the area are prescribed to the patient. Return to normal daily activities involving the shoulder is also then encouraged. Treatment may also involve some postural reeducation and exercises for same. In a very limited number of long standing cases a consultant may determine that surgery is necessary to resolve the condition.

Eddie O’Grady Dingle Horse Riding

The primary goal of treatment is to restore painless functional range of movement to the shoulder joint. Regaining full range of movement while it is sometimes achievable www.dinglehorseriding.com/booking is not always realistic. Range of movement in the uninvolved shoulder should serve as a guide for setting treatment goals. To treat frozen shoulder many people initially turn to prescription drugs such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. These aid in the reduction of inflammation and pain. Cortisone injections into the shoulder joint may help decrease pain and shorten symptom duration during the initial painful phase, but should only be used as a last resort due to the side Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street effects. Often manual therapy combined with & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen can start recovery. Also early treatment of the condition before it ”freezes” is usually

8. Is fearr tigh beag lán, ná tigh mór ar bheagán.

Sea, táimid i gcroí lár an Fhómhair agus is mó san duine nách bhfuil a bhfómhar curtha i gcrích fós acu ainneoin na dea-aimsire a bhí againn. Deirtear nách raibh aon chrích ar bharraí de bharr an mhór bhrothall agus go raibh báisteach ag teastáil le cabhrú leis na barraí fás.

7. An té is sia a chuaidh, is giorra don uaigh; 9. Bainis an ghorta, prátái agus scadáin. 10. A bhean mhánla ós na hallaí aniar, Ní geal an gáire ach an áit ‘na mbíonn an bia.

Taithníonn an Fómhar le móran ach is é deireadh na dea-aimsire é agus an bheárna don anaithe ag brú ar chách sna míosa rómhainn. Bhí fear ag rá liom an lá cheana gur fearr leis an fuacht ná an teas - gan a bheith ró fhuar. Dar liom gur deacair lá breá Fómhair a shárú ná lá breá Earraigh. Bíonn a ndraíocht féin leo. Anseo beidh Ceiliúradh an Bhlascaoid ar an 14ú lá go Domhnach an séú lá déag. I mbliana beidh Ollchruiniú do bhaill na fondúireachta ann ar a ceathair a chlog ar an Satharn. Is mó san duine a bhaineann an- shásamh as an gCeiliúradh. Ag féachaint romhainn is mó san duine ag réiteacht le dul go dtí Oireachtas na bliana seo i gCill Airne. ‘An bhfuil faic scríte agat’, arsa cara dhom an lá cheanna. ‘Aon dath’, a dúirt ach ní ionann san ná go mbeadh bó éigin le crú agam. Caid Déarfad arís é- tá na beartais aos na mionúr agus foirne 21 bliain a ísliú go 17 bl. do mhionúir agus 20 bliain do an iar ‘fé bhliain is fiche’. Teora a chur le pasáil agus gan cead pas a chur siar. Deireadh a chur leis an ndornálaíocht a úsáidtear leis an gcaid a bhaint do imreoir. Speachanna in ionad pasanna. Tá daoine ag éirí bréan bailithe don sort sin caide atá á himirt le blianta beaga. Is beag scil ná gabháil le feiscint ach ‘ping pong’ gan deálramh.Tá deirim leat daoine ag éirí an- bailithe don gcaid rud a chuireann buairt ar scata. N”fheadar cad ar a bhíonn na hoifigh agus stiúrthóirí na caide ag smaoineamh- pé rud é níl aon chiall leo. B’fhearr dóibh na fadharcáin seo a chaitheamh uatha nó beidh sé ró-dhéanach. Transition Corca Dhuibhne - Call for Volunteers Be part of an inspirational team of volunteers working towards making the Dingle Food Festival waste free, with this fun community-led initiative. We are looking for volunteers to man the rinse stations and waste segregation bins for one stint over the weekend of the Food Festival 6th & 7th Oct. It’s a simple enough task and time flies by; instructions and guidance will be given to volunteers - basically it is helping festival goers choose the right bin for their waste or making sure everything is in order at the rinse station. Its very satisfying and rewarding work, festival-goers really appreciate the help and you can have good craic as people are in great form. Its one of the biggest and definitely the best food festival in Ireland and volunteering is a lovely way for you to be part of it.
