As a coaching staff, we challenge our men to focus on our vision, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship and to return to national prominence, while also stressing our mission: “To become brothers on and off the field and to conduct ourselves with the confidence and accountability, while striving for excellence and finishing everything that we start.” The backbone of our program at Westminster is our values that foster accountability in the lives of our young men as we recognize and respect the worth and leadership of each person. The names and faces that appear in this guide have learned the value of a Westminster education and what it means to be a Titan. We hope to provide these opportunities to others who accept the challenge. Jeff Hand Head Coach

he 2013 Westminster College football team will aim to make their presence felt in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) as 32 lettermen (13 on offense, 18 on defense, and 1 on special teams) return for the Titans. The Titans went 3-6 overall last year, however, four of its six losses had a point differential of six points or less. “We will continue to emphasize the importance of finishing games to our team,” said nine-year head coach Jeff Hand. “We need to throw the ball more effectively on third downs and we need to get off the field defensively on third downs. We need to be more consistent with those two things this year in order to be successful.” Westminster has 15 starters returning in 2013, 13 of which are seniors. “The leadership from

our seniors is going to be monumental for us,” Hand added. The Titans are returning seven starters each on offense and defense and one on special teams.

OFFENSE On offense, the Titans return All-PAC honorees seniors RB Tyler Banks and QB Dak Britt who together made up 91% of the Titans’ total offense in 2012. Banks set career-highs last year as he led the team in rushing with 651 yards and six touchdowns. In his first year as a Titan, Britt provided a dual threat under center as he compiled 1,951 total yards (1,386 passing, 565 rushing). Britt scored a team-high 19 total touchdowns (11 passing, eight rushing). Britt also set the school-record for rushing yards in a single game by a quarterback twice last season with 172 yards being the most. Seniors All-PAC honoree Daniel Graham, Michael Blair, and Tony Hamorsky are three of the five starting offensive linemen returning for the Titans. “It’s great to have key returning starters on the offensive line,” Hand said. “It’s nice to have those three to lean on.” Also on offense, seniors All-PAC WR Collin Wallace, TE David Wright and WR Toby Bonitz bring experience and leadership for their final campaign. Wallace is the leading returner in the

receiving corps as he had career-highs in receiving yards (424) and receiving touchdowns (2) a season ago.

DEFENSE The Titan defense brings back seven starters from 2012, five of which are seniors. Senior DL Second Team All-PAC Sean Christofferson led the Titan lineman last year with 46 tackles to go along with a teambest four sacks. Christofferson’s 13.5 tackles for a loss were also a team-best and ranked fifth in the conference. “Sean is a workhorse with a great motor,” Hand said. “He’s one of those players who knows when to step up and make the big play.” Senior LBs All-PAC honorees Nate Moot and Aaron Nauer and classmate Taylor Heinrich return in 2013. Moot was the leading tackler for the Titans last year with 67 tackles which ranked in the top 15 in the PAC. Moot also tied second on the team with two interceptions. Rounding out the returning senior starters on defense is DB back Josh Beistel who is coming off his best

season with 41 tackles. Also returning after productive seasons are juniors DB Jared Heck and DL Chuck Sayre. Heck was the leading tackler in the secondary with 45 tackles and was second on the team in break ups (4) and pass defenses (5). Sayre’s five tackles for a loss tied for third on the team to go along with 29 tackles. Senior DL Shawn Kronenwetter will also challenge for a starting position.

SPECIAL TEAMS Sophomore P Jake Schnelbach returns after a solid first-year averaging 35.2 yards per punt with a long of 61. He had two touchbacks and four kicks inside the 20 yard-line. Snappers sophomore Dylan Hogue and junior Ed Domitrovich along with sophomore LB Justin Shaw, the 2012 Team’s Special Teams MVP, return after productive seasons last year.

Providing support for Westminster’s athletic programs is the Towering Titan Organization (TTO), formed in 1976 around a core of devoted, loyal and intensely interested alumni, parents and friends. The organization purposes itself to help maintain, improve and endow Westminster College’s athletic programs. Over $3 million in gifts have been contributed to the Towering Titan Fund since its inception. The annual income is distributed in this manner: 90 percent of all donations go directly to the sport(s) chosen (donations can be designated to a specific sport for men or women), with 10 percent going towards the operation and promotion of the fund. All 20 varsity sports for men and women benefit from the fund. A minimum gift of $30 qualifies a donor for membership. Members receive a membership card and decal, issues of the Towering Titan Newsletter and invitations to social events such as golf outings each July, and recognition dinners and ceremonies that are scheduled periodically. Qualifying gifts are also recognized through membership in Westminster’s Giving Clubs. he most significant renovation project in the 61-year history of Memorial Field took place in 2008 with the installation of synthetic FieldTurf and lighting as part of a $1.7 million project that included the Joseph B. Fusco Plaza and the Jerry C. Neff Entranceway. Directly adjacent to the Field House and sitting just north of Brittain Lake on the Westminster campus, the 3,000-seat facility has been the home of six national championship teams and was the site of the 1988 NAIA Division II National Championship game, won by the Titans over Wisconsin-LaCrosse, 21-14. In 1997, the entire complex was dedicated and named in honor of the late College Football Hall of Famer Dr. Harold Burry ’35, who served as head football coach from 1952-71 with a career record of 127-31-5. The stadium underwent a renovation in 1997, as a donation by Westminster trustee Jim Dewar and his family resulted in the refurbishment of the bleachers and construction of a new press box. A new track was installed in 2001 through a gift from the Hoyt Foundation in New Castle. In 2005, a new scoreboard was installed and a year later a new sound system was updated. The locker rooms for both home and visiting teams are located in the Memorial Field House next to the stadium.

estminster College has a proud athletics heritage that is steeped with a tradition of winning. Although the College was founded in 1852, varsity athletics at Westminster did not become prevalent until 1884. Beginning in 1926, the sports teams at Westminster became known as the “Titans,” after a The Original “Towering Titans” of 1926-27 sportswriter for the student newspaper, The Holcad, nicknamed the resurgent basketball team the “Towering Titans” because of younger, taller men that made up the starting lineup. The athletics program at Westminster became best known for the success of its football and men’s basketball teams. The Titan football team won six NAIA National Championships from 1970-94 and 71% (398-157-10) of its games since 1952. The men’s basketball team, honored by the Associated Press as the nation’s top small college team in 1962, was the all-time winningest NAIA team before Westminster joined the NCAA in 1998.

The PAC

F

ounded in 1955, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference continues its mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of 10 select private institutions in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC annually crowns champions in 19 sports (10 men, nine women).
