All programming has an on the surface reasoning. Childcare provides a safe place for youth to be while the parent works, Y&G teaches teens how democracy works, and Resident Camp takes kids up to the mountains to spend a week doing fun activities they can never do at home. What makes YMCA programming so special is that we do this and so much more. We will discuss how we can intentionally focus on implementing character building into our programming.

This workshop educates participants on best practices for engaging with the LGBTQ+, gender non-conforming, and gender-questioning youth. Topics include: asking/using preferred pronouns, how to respectfully navigate discussions around gender identity, the impact of creating a safe and inclusive environment. By the end of the workshop, participants will have a deeper understanding of the challenges facing LGBTQ+, gender non-conforming, and gender questioning youth, and the skills needed to support them in a meaningful and effective way.

Learning Outcomes: Participants will learn best practices for engaging with LGBTQ+, gender nonconforming, and/or gender questioning youth.

Get up close and personal with licensing in this intimate session, which provides a safe space to ask your questions and get them answered.

At the end of this session, participants will better understand how to:

Ask open-ended questions to encourage children’s curiosity, creativity, and reasoning skills. Not just any questions will do. Equip children to solve problems and understand the world around them by asking questions that promote brain processing. Help them relate new information to past or present experiences while developing speech and language skills, building confidence in their abilities, learning to express their thoughts and ideas, and expanding upon what they already know. Walk away with solid questions that encourage children to pause, think, experiment, and reflect. We'll put theory into practice using preschool and kindergarten scenarios.

We all have children in our programs that have concerning behaviors, or their home life changes drastically, and we might notice changes with them from one day to the next. We might think to ourselves they will snap out of it or it’s just them growing up. Some behaviors get looked over because it’s easier to do that instead of getting down to the root of the problem. What if we knew what to look for and how to help these children so issues and problems don’t continue to escalate. What if we “Knew the Signs”? (Paired with Active Assailant)

To help teach and inform youth development professionals on how to know the signs of children/teens who might be going through a hard time or major behavior issues before it escalates in to something more.

Drumming is a great activity for bringing a group of people together. March to the beat of your own drum and watch how, as a group, we are somehow all brought closer together as our drums entrain. No experience required. Learn some basics of drumming as well as how to make a simple, inexpensive drumming instrument. Have fun. Great for any age group.

This workshop will cover best practices for youth workers to create a welcoming environment for LGBTQ+ children and families. We will cover introductory information about sexual orientation, gender identity & expression (SOGIE), provide recommendations for inclusive language and practices, and review students' rights and resources at school and in the broader community.

Participants will leave with a basic understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity & expression (SOGIE). Participants will learn 3 best practices for creating inclusive and affirming environments for LGBTQ+ children and families.
