WEEK 9 READING: PERSPECTIVE AS SYMBOLIC FORM

Question 1: What are Durer’s rules for perspectival projection? (Maximum 100 words) Dürer invented several drawing machines to teach perspective and he explained the concept of perspectival projector as “seeing through”. The perspectival projector enables people create a three-dimentional space in a planar medium, which is similar to a window reflects the positions of objects in the real world. And this image in the surface is represented by drawing a group of transparent lines which are intersected and disappered in the same point, which we called “vanishing point”. These lines and the“ vanishing point‘ forms a ”visual pyramid”, which imitates how eyes work in the real world. This makes the perspectival projector method scientifically accurate.

Question 2: Describe homogenous space? (Maximum 100 words)

The homogenous sapce is preciously and rationally imaged by adoptinging the mathematical and geometrical techiques. And it in some way is not restrcited to a ”given space“. It’s functional reality instead of a subastantial one. The scintific“scale” is an essential part of creating a homogenous space.

OLD QUAD ISOMETRIC WITH NOTATIONS

Old Quad isometric view with notations showing Macro Polo’s journey in Anastasia

QUAD PERSPECTIVE 1 + 2 Annotation. Anastasia is a very hustling and bustling metropolis as described by Carlvino. In this case, I tried to avoid limiting the view in a very narrow and fully interior space. In this view, Macro sitted down in the first level on the opposite shore, and he could see everything happening in the most representative central area of Anastasia. He could see the ongoing feast holded by arabic millionaries and merchants, the gondolas hugging the shore and kites flying in the sky.

Annotation. This view mainly presents the senario in the second floor which is in the opposite side of the first one. In this view Macro came to the other side of the canal. Peoples are busy cuttering gems. This view is directly related to the first one. And this change indicates the tarck of Macro’s movements. Similar to the first one, this view provides a board and open view. The difference is that when Macro standing at the this floor he had a better view of the whole picture of Anastasia. And we can also experience the prosperity of this extremely visual appealing city.

PERSPECTIVE SCENE 1 + 2 Annotation. When Macro Polo just arrived Anastasia in the late night, the candles on the wall almost burnt out. Howere, the night life in this surreal and opulent city was just began. there was a grand feast holded by the merchants and millionaries in this city. These people were gather and having a very delighful conversation. The clothes and accessories they wear looked expensive.Beautiful waitress brought golden pheasant which was cooked over the fire of seasonal cherry woods. There was a large table with a wide variety of cuisiens. Gondolas were already pulled inshore, But the merchant ship was just leaving offshore. Macro felt the city was extremely attractive. Annotation. In the second day, Macro ferried across to the opposite bank. He went up to the second floor, which is totally different with yesterday. In this floor, people are from a lower class. They are busy cuttering the gems and the kitchen where the pheasnats were cooked looed in a huge mess. Two dogs were scrambling for the rest parts of dead pheasant. Although the room filled with beautiful jewels and the blazed piles of golden coin stacked in the table. macro felt sad to see this huge metropolis and its people stuck in the apathy. They were just the slavery of money and their life were totally controlled by the capitalist.

WEEK 4 READING:

PRACTICE ARCHITECTURE, TECHNIQUE AND REPRESENTATION -----MAPPING THE UNMAPPABLE ON NOTATION Question 1: IWhat is the difference between autographic and allographic practice? (Maximum 100 words) The autographic and alographic are mainly distinguised from each other in the capability of being reporducted. Autographic refers to the artworks producted by the authors who is legally owned the copyright and have contracts with people who uses their works. Such as paintings and sculptures. However, the allographic can be reproduced through the noatition. Such as the music, performance. Since once the form of these types of arts changed, the derivatives are considered not reproducing the original edition at all.

Question 2: Why do architects need new representational techniques? (Maximum 100 words) Since Architecture is neither allographic or autographic. The architectural designs nowadays are expected focus more an spend more efforts on the form of structure and the consistence in line with people’s social, cultural, identical needs.Architects need new representational techiques to specifically enhance the coherence of architectural design with social science aspects and better reflect human’s physical and mental life in this era.

To better reflect the real senario in this line script with notation, I added a range of icons which functioned to refelct the position, the events, different people and items. I also use some lines to reflect the movements of Macro. There were 3 types of light (daylight, noghtlignt and canddle light) to enhance the visual experience of this script. And to add some musical elements to imporve the audio sense, I use two Alphebets icons to represent the D major and e minor seperately, which reflected Macro’s emotional change as well.

Research map

The selection of my figures in Annastasia is based on my re search of the original edition of Marco Polo’s travel. I found Anastasia highly matched many descriptions about the lesser Armenia, Persia, and other Mediterr Mediterranean regions, which Marco recorded in the very begining of his journey. Apart from thses images, I also added the gondola, which is a representative public transport in Venice to add a strong Venice feeling since in the “invisible cities, Marco has explained him self that every cities he talked about was originated by the im pressions of Venice in his mind.
