Digital Design - Module 01 Semester 1, 2018 WENZHAO SA

Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

Signs and symbols are simple, also easily recognisable representations of something clear, direct and specific. During the design progress, the symbols and signs play representational roles. The diagram is described as “the tool that describes relationships and prescribes perfromances in Space”. It is a mediator between physical constructs and concepts on an organisational level and that their performance “depends on how they are deployed”. The effective diagram could convey many results and mediates.

Week One

Precedent Analysis

Image 1 (top left) showing the start of tracing the structrual steel frame. Image 2 (top right) showing the extruded result of the steel structure with a certain thickness. Image 3 The plan view from the top of the building model showing the complex of the structure, glazing and solid.

The problem at the start to make this model is how to create the complexcity of the intersecting lines. After my research on the concepts of the buidling design, I try to trace the line in Rhino with the plan image which I got online and then extrude the whole structure and gave the frame a certain thikness to stand it up as a initial 3D model. Then I traced out where the glazings and solids are seperately and extruded them. Finally, the six surface were deployed together to create a complete 3D model of this cube-looking building.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

The flexibility were emphasized in the article more than the specific function during the design process of facilities in the public spaces. The form of building are various depends on the people’s expectations for it to support different activities. The changing of form are encouraged as well to adapt different usage under changing circumstances. The Serpentine Pavillon were intended to be a beach restaurant , which is for the commercial use. However, with the designer’s effort. It turned out to be not just as the usual enclosed and single-functional restaurant but providing enough public space and semi-private space for people to communicate and interact. It allows greater accomodation potential.

Week Two

Isometric

Isometrc of Toyo ito’s Serpentine Pavillon The pavillon consists of 3 parts as it shown with different transparency in the photo. The steel structure is presented as the deep black line, which supports the other 2 parts. The glazing is transparent and the solid is coloured with white. The most difficult part of making the model is to extrude the curves and fix them together, since there are variations between the lines in the different surfaces. So when I finishing the tracing, I noticed that these extrusions can hardly be put up together and meet the ends to each other. I tred to retrace these lines several times by drawing a couple of guide lines and make the ends of the lines in the same guide lines, which help to eliminate the unfitness. To refine the make 2D result is also a hard part. This process took a pretty long time to clear massive useless lines and to change the line weight to show the depth and opacity. The overall pavillon is such a representative building to show the designer’s ability to play with sunlight and views as well as his ability to create functional space under the changing circumstances. The architecture’s abilities to facilitate people to dicover and utilize the spaces by multiple means are well represented as well.

Week Two

Diagrams

Circulation diagram

Threshold diagram

The circulation within the pavillon is greatly influenced by the placement of the furnitures. People tends to ge together and stay for a long time in the place where they can easily grab a seat.

The furnitures and the glazing &solid structure are functioned as the threshold in terms of people’s activities. The furnitures sperate the public space and semi-private space. And the glazing&solid structure provides the connect between the inner space and the outer space.
