WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. (Maximum 100 words) The three elementary types of developable surfaces are: (1)Cylinders, which are formed by a group of parallel lindes and modelled by a defaulted curve which is then extruded in many directions. (2) Cones, which consists of a single vertex point that consists of many lines which end at a given profile curve. (3) Tangent surfaces, which are created through the apply of polygons with set vertices. 2 consecutive vertices make the edge of thepolygon and another 3 make up its faces.
Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. (Maximum 100 words) Understaning of developable surface is critical as we need to follow the basic rules when we begin to design , the shape we developed could only make sense in the real world practically when it can be made into an actual modes. And when we acknowledge the developable surfaces, we can create things with more flexiablilities and confidence. As seen from the Greenhouse Expo in Xi’an, the structure of which is entirely fabricated by triangular transparent solar panels. Thclever use of developable surfaces enable large buildings be structured in a very precise, coherent and unique shape .

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION Complete your reading before attempting these questions:
Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? (Maximum 100 words) Digital fabrication is the generalising process of creating shapes and structures of objects widely applied into the modern architecture industry. By building up 3D models in the software with many handy tools, designers are enabled to test their idea very quickly and throughly. It covers designers’ drawing and sense of stereo-space shoratge and improve the efficiency.
Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? (Maximum 100 words) (!) The three dimensional shape can be formned by folding. (2) Most of time, creating space by folding could be thought economic, high efficient but lower cost and makes best utilize of the space, structurl sturdy, which is an remarkable advantage overwhelmingly better than the traditional buidling design.
