Update your yard using Pavers!

- Excavation - Irrigation - Lighting - Slabs, Pavers or Wall Blocks - Plants - Garden Furniture

PAVERS Uniform pavers come in a wide range of shapes and colours. They can be used to achieve plain, linear designs as well as elaborate geometric patterns. Experiment with the colours of the pavers to enrich the overall effect.

Once you have mapped out your project calculate the surface measurements in order to determine the quantity of material needed. Before starting on any work, check local regulations to make sure that any specific features you wish to include conform to local bylaws.

SELECTING YOUR STONES

If you want to add a touch of class and distinction to your outdoor landscape, paving is a hard choice to beat. Good planning is the key to making the most of paving’s potentials. Try some of our tips and advice on selecting paving slabs, pavers and stone to help you create the perfect yard for recreation and relaxation. First step in your project is determining what your budget is going to be for your project and secondly do you have any existing structures that you’ll have to plan around or remove Some other factors you should consider when planning your project are: • Sun exposure your project area has, what plants and other materials are you planning to incorporate into the project. • Planning around existing structures that may be in your yard like a shed or a preexisting deck. • The future maintenance and upkeep for your project.

The selection should be based on three main factors: • The Look: shape, colour and texture. Slabs, blocks and pavers should blend in with their surroundings. Select materials and designs to contrast and enhance the features of your home. • The Price: The price per slab or paver will vary depending on its thickness, quality, finish, shape and size. Prices range between $1.50 and $6 per square foot. • The Use: The choice of slab, block or paver will depend on its destination and the treatment awaiting it (weight, snow shovel abuse, de-icing products, freezing, thawing, etc.). Paving Slabs Paving slabs are an ideal solution for covering a large surface with reasonably priced, quality material For creating a patio or dining areas, you can use the square or rectangular slabs which allow you to cover the most area in the least mount on cost. These slabs come in a variety of textures and colours that allow you to create some stunning effects.

WALL BLOCKS Some types of paving blocks are designed especially for building low retaining walls. Assembly techniques vary according to the manufacturer. It is important to know the height of the tallest wall in your landscape plan since this will determine the wall blocks you select. There are three types of blocks, depending on the height of the wall desired: • Blocks for low walls with minimal retaining capacity, mainly used for decorative purposes (less than 24" high) • Blocks for retaining walls less than 48" high • Blocks for retaining walls up to 60" high Once you have chosen your stone, it’s time to put your plan into action. Remember professional landscapers will be able to do certain jobs expertly, although this can involve additional and sometimes substantial costs. If your budget is limited, remember that a landscaping project can be spread over several years.

BUDGET AND CARRYING OUT THE WORK Carrying out a paved outdoor project is a considerable undertaking, you should budget for the following elements:

EXHIBITIONS READY PLAYER TWO Brendan Tang & Sonny Assu May 25 – September 3, 2017 Opening Reception May 25 | 7pm Brendan Tang and Sonny Assu combine elements from science fiction, comic book, and gaming cultures to consider how these forms alternately reinforce and transcend racial boundaries in youth culture. THE GREAT EXPERIMENT Erika Walker May 25 – September 3, 2017 Opening Reception May 25 | 7pm The exhibition’s title refers to an 1845 essay by American John O’Sullivan which popularized the notion of manifest destiny and reassured settlers of their right to “overspread and to possess the whole of the continent … for the development of the great experiment of liberty.” Printmaker Ericka Walker challenges the moral authority of nation-building ideals using the same visual language that has been used to entrench them. THE IRRETRIVABLE MOMENT Jim Adams Surrey Art Gallery: April 8-June 11, 2017 The Reach: May 25-September 3, 2017 Opening Reception May 25 | 7pm A two-part retrospective exhibition between the Surrey Art Gallery and The Reach Gallery Museum. The first part of the exhibition at the Surrey Art Gallery includes early book works and graphic arts, urban and suburban streetscapes, metaphysical landscapes, allegorical portraits, mythic sketches and aviation abstractions. The Reach presents a selection of Adams’ paintings and objects that combine imagery inspired by Classical and African myth and the visual language of science fiction. . VOICES OF THE VALLEY COMMUNITY HISTORY EXHIBITION Permanent Exhibition Free, open to the public The Reach recently received the 2016 Governor General’s History Award for Excellence in Community Programming for Voices of the Valley, a permanent museum exhibition and interpretive program developed in collaboration with the MSA Museum Society in Abbotsford. hen trying to lose weight and/or get fit, many of us can get distracted with the minor details, like different set and rep schemes for exercise, should I or shouldn’t I do “cardio”, maybe this other program is more “optimal” for fat loss for my metabolic type, maybe I should only drink unicorn tears because they’re super magical…you get the idea! When it comes to nutrition, simply focus on eating enough real food for your body to thrive, and a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to cover all of the bases when it comes to vitamins and minerals. If you get that right 90% of the time, and you’re still making progress towards your goals, IT DOESN”T MATTER if you have a glass of wine with dinner, or enjoy dinner and dessert out with friends or family once in a while. Need some help with figuring out what or how much to eat? Keep it simple – see our nutrition FAQ at www.btgfitness.com/nutrition-faq. For training, don’t over analyze it. Finding a coach to work with is your best bet because you can let them worry about the details – you just show up. If that’s not in your budget, that’s OK too – just find some physical activity you enjoy where you feel like you’re working

hard, and do it as frequently as possible. I personally got my best results ever from doing essentially the same 20-40 minute workout, twice per day, five days per week for six months straight, in a 6 foot by 12 foot corner of my garage with minimal equipment. The worst program in the world, done consistently, with intensity, will get you better results over time than hopping from one thing to the next, constantly searching for the “optimal” workout. Want the exact workout I did to drop 25 pounds in six months? Go to our training FAQ at www.btgfitness.com/training-faq. Make 2017 the year you really succeed by keeping things simple and consistent! If you have any questions regarding training or nutrition, contact Coach JP via our website at www.btgfitness.com, or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/btgfitness. JP Siou is a personal trainer, Precision Nutrition Level 1 Certified nutrition/lifestyle coach, and the owner at BTG Fitness & Lifestyle Coaching in Abbotsford, BC.

For Fat Loss and Fitness, Consistency Is Key

Celebrating Canada’s 150th - It’s great to be Canadian, eh?! Planning for Agrifair 2017 was pretty easy once we realized Canada was having a birthday – let’s celebrate! How does one go about doing that? Well, think Canadian and have some fun, eh?! Hockey in August - why not! Strathcona Mounted Troop – of course. Salute to Canadian Military – one ball diamond of history coming up of WWI, WWII, and Cold War educational interactive displays. Recognizing Canadian diversity on our main stage Friday, a salute to Canadian rock & roll Saturday, and don’t forget the birthday cake! Building on the success of 2016, where the board of directors strategically planned “going back to our fair roots and putting families first”, 2017 sees more of the same style of entertainment and attractions. Partnering with so many amazing attractions such as the Demolition Derby featuring more demo and roll over action including the Global FMX Bike Riders and a 30 foot fire breathing dragon! Street hockey challenges open to all ages during non-competitive games, an all-new Laughing Logger show that will include an interactive area. The ever popular Dan the One Man Band, Magician Gary Savard, Science World and Keva planks, Lego with a giant Canada flag build, mini golf, and the family room with complimentary diapers and wipes. The family building will host a variety of new and favorite vendors and story time with some of your favorite Disney Characters

16

including Anna & Elsa. If your spidey sense is tingling – it could be because Spiderman is on site and ready to help. More Canadian entertainment – how about wrestler Davey Boy Smith Jr, barrel racing, the antique tractor parade, a dog show and of course racing pigs and ducks. As well, welcome back to Shooting Star Amusements with their family friendly midway, ConeZone with its educational road safety program, the wonderful Country Horse Classic program including wheelbarrow races. And of course our large 4-H and livestock program. Agrifair boosts the largest agricultural program within lower mainland fairs. Expanded programming will include garden tours as part of the Gate to Plate on site educational tour. Teaching you where your food comes from, how to build a veggie garden and plant some wild flowers to help the honey bee population. And come hungry! This year marks the largest show of food trucks Agrifair has ever had – you wanted it we brought it!

Take out your calendars and mark off August 4 to 6, where you can come to the best little country fair in the nation!

15 Things To Consider Beyond Inspection:

1) Indoor/Outdoor Space and Flow. Is it important that you can easily move from inside to your outside space. Sliding glass doors or do you prefer French doors? 2) Interior Layout. Imagine a typical day at home for you. Does the layout work for your day to day living. 3) Size of Rooms. Everyone Deserves the opportunity to build a better life. Too many families spend their days struggling to keep an affordable roof over their heads. That struggle often involves agonizing choices. Choices like do they heat their home this month or do they pay the rent? Second jobs, extra shifts. Moves to neighborhoods that are less safe, where schools might not be as good. Deeper debt. Less spent on health care and healthy food. Too many children for too few rooms. Unsafe, rodent or bug infested, inadequate housing. When housing isn’t affordable and secure, families suffer. You can help Habitat provide a hand up—not a hand out, by volunteering, donating, and shopping and donating to ReStore!

What are Habitat ReStores, and how does it help my community? ReStores are home and building supply stores that accept and resell quality new and used building materials. You save money and you are helping build homes for local families. Shopping at a Habitat ReStore is an environmentally conscious decision, as much of what is sold is diverted from your local landfill. How much do ReStores reduce wastage? Last year Habitat saved 36,000 tons of materials from our Canadian landfills Habitats’ ReStores in Abbotsford and Chilliwack cover all administration, management and fundraising costs for our affiliate. Plus, they contribute money to buy land and build homes. This ensures that 100% of every cash donation goes directly to build homes. What type of items can be donated to my ReStore? Stores accept a wide range of new and gently used items. Commonly donated items include windows, doors, paint, hardware, lumber, tools, lighting fixtures, furniture and appliances and more. To donate goods, please send pictures to restoredonate@habitatufv.ca. Donations may be dropped off or we can pick up.
