IS YOUR PATIO READY FOR SUMMER? Here are some simple ways to refresh your patio without breaking the bank. Tools Required: - Pressure washer, - Safety Eye wear - Out door Wide-head, Stiff bristled Brush - You choice of Moss and Algae removal agent The simplest way that any home-owner can spruce up their outdoor patio area is by cleaning away any debris left over from fall and winter by using a pressure washer. Pressure washers are extremely effective for removing any algae, lichens or moss that may have started to develop and can cause any hard surfaces to become slippery. The use of a pressure washer is also an environmentally friendly alternative to using harsh chemicals to remove the algae or moss build up. If you don’t have a pressure washer handy, you can always use a wide head outdoor scrub brush, with either wire bristles’ or stiff natural bristles’. Using a scrub brush is great if you only have a small area to clean. If you do choose to use a chemical to assist you in the removal the algae and moss build-up in your patio area, there are many varieties available for you use. Make sure you read the label and that the product is applicable for your patio surface. With any type of chemical removal agent, or even using environmentally friendly alternative, yearly maintenance and upkeep is key to a long lasting patio. Once your outdoor living space has been washed, its ready to go. One of the simplest ways to energize your outdoor living space is to add plants. These plants can not only look great, but also add a splash of colour to your living area, but you can also grow herbs and vegetable plants that will benefit you and your family all summer long. Hardy herbs grow great in containers such as oregano, thyme, basil, chives, and rosemary; as well as other vegetables like Lettuce, Spinach and Arugula. Plant pots also come in a variety of colours and shapes and are also an excellent way of adding colour and personality to your outdoor living space or patio area. Depending on textures, colours and height of the pots you choose, you can create the image of a large open area.

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

Spring was slow to arrive, but the Fraser Valley’s most glorious season is now in full swing! And, with it comes all the wonderful outdoor events, including the start of the Abbotsford Farmer’s Market in beautiful downtown Abbotsford. Summer is shaping up to be one of the best! Over the course of the winter, the What’s On! Abbotsford staff spent some time contemplating the future of the magazine. It has been hugely successful entering it’s third year and we have loved meeting all the community organizers and attending all the great events in the Abbotsford area. Publisher Cory Cassel recently made a huge decision to move to Japan, a country that holds a treasured place in his heart. He has long planned to move and events that have transpired in the last few months have made his dream a reality. He will be leaving in 2019.

Although a sad decision for us, we look forward to introducing someone new to the incredible fun and satisfaction of publishing What’s On! Abbotsford. We will be continuing to bring the magazine to you until we find the perfect person to take over the reins. It will continue to be the Go To for all events in the Abbotsford area! Happy Summer from our team!

Cory & Bronwen

Cory is the heart and soul of What’s On! Abbotsford. His dedication to the community is unparalleled and moving forward with out his energy and commitment does not seem possible. After many deliberations, we have decided to place the magazine for sale. It is a tremendous opportunity for someone to step in and take it to the next level. Publishing the magazine is such an amazing experience and we know a new person will love it as much as we do!

READY PLAYER TWO - Brendan Tang & Sonny Assu, May 25 – September 3, 2017. Opening Reception May 25 | 7pm. Brendan Tang and Sonny Assu combine elements from science fiction, comic book, and gaming cultures to consider how these forms alternately reinforce and transcend racial boundaries in youth culture. Found objects, selections from previous bodies of work, and new collaborative pieces create immersive spaces that evoke the adolescent sanctuaries of their time: the basement, the arcade, and the comic book store.

DROP-IN TOURS Tuesdays | 12 – 12:30pm / Thursdays | 3 – 3:30pm / Fridays | 12 – 12:30pm and 2 – 2:30pm Free, drop-in. Enliven your experience of current art exhibitions with a gallery tour or dive into our community heritage exhibition with a museum tour. These 30 minute guided tours are a great way to learn about the cultural and social contexts of artworks and artifacts on display. Tours are led by knowledgeable docents who provide a general overview of exhibitions and an opportunity for lively discussion.

THE GREAT EXPERIMENT - Erika Walker. May 25 – September 3, 2017. Opening Reception May 25 | 7pm. The exhibition’s title refers to an 1845 essay by American John O’Sullivan which popularized the notion of manifest destiny and reassured settlers of their right to “overspread and to possess the whole of the continent … for the development of the great experiment of liberty.” Printmaker Ericka Walker challenges the moral authority of nation-building ideals using the same visual language that has been used to entrench them.

BIRTHDAY PARTIES $125 Party of 12 or fewer participants / $150 Party of 13 to 20 participants. Can be booked Saturdays and Sundays, 1 – 3pm. The two-hour booking includes a one hour facilitated art project followed by one hour of free time that can be used to do cake, presents and games. The Reach has two exciting birthday party themes to choose from: the Mini-Monster Making party or a birthday themed on the current art exhibitions (ask us about the current project).

THE IRRETRIVABLE MOMENT - Jim Adams. May 25-September 3, 2017. Opening Reception May 25 | 7pm. A twopart retrospective exhibition between the Surrey Art Gallery and The Reach Gallery Museum. The first part of the exhibition at the Surrey Art Gallery includes early book works and graphic arts, urban and suburban streetscapes, metaphysical landscapes, allegorical portraits, mythic sketches and aviation abstractions. The Reach presents a selection of Adams’ paintings and objects that combine imagery inspired by Classical and African myth and the visual language of science fiction.

ART PARTIES $150 Party of 12 or fewer participants / $200 Party of 13 to 20 participants. Can be booked Saturdays and Sundays, 1 – 3pm or Thursdays 6 – 8pm. Y

es, the "W" word. That mythical pink fluffy unicorn called Willpower has been held out as the key to success in nearly every realm of life, from weight loss, to business success, to climbing Mount Everest. I've also heard, time and time again, "I just don't have the willpower to resist eating X..." to explain why someone hasn't been able to succeed in losing weight and/or maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It seems that, much of the time, people equate willpower with strong motivation. For example if your motivation for losing weight is strong enough, you will be able to resist the temptations of poor food choices, because the motivation will give you the will. Maybe they need to get in shape or risk losing their job, or have been told that their life is in imminent danger from health complications unless they lose weight. Keep trekking through the forest or climbing that mountain, or give up and die alone in the wilderness. In these cases, people are absolutely driven by this strong motivation. From the outside looking in, it seems that these people have enormous willpower because they don't make those bad choices, but when you look just a bit deeper, or even if you ask these people how they "find the willpower" they'll tell you. It isn't willpower, it's

that the alternative (not losing weight) or the consequences of that alternative (e.g. unemployment or death) are negative enough in their mind that it is simply not viable, so they have "no choice" but to make the right choice. Having a deep, emotionally-resonant motivation is great, and can definitely help keep you on track through minor, or even some not-so-minor, challenges along the way. For most of us though, for motivation to be strong enough on its own to sustain a fitness/ lifestyle journey through serious challenges, it literally has to be life and death. If the consequences of failure are less than fatal, we can always find a way to accept falling off track. That is completely normal and is absolutely OK! Waiting until the motivation is "strong enough" is a losing game. For a better way forward to success TODAY, continue reading on our blog at www.btgfitness.com/blog/the-myth-of-willpower. Amazing Advice, Amazing Service... Things to Consider When Purchasing a New Home Bring a Checklist - CHMC is a good reference for things to consider- cmhc-schl.gc.ca. Decide on the neighborhood(s) that are your favourite and the proximity to the service that matter most to you. Calculate how much you can afford - Do you have enough for a down payment, closing costs, mortgage payments and monthly maintenance (repairs, property taxes, insurance, groceries). Get the right advice - work with a knowledgeable realtor, get preapproved for a mortgage, your lawyer/notary, home inspector and an insurance company. Up-Front Costs - Appraisal, Down payment, Strata Fees (if applicable), Inspection Fee, Transfer Fees, Legal Disbursements, Title Insurance, Property Tax Adjustments, Title Insurance Costs. After Moving In - Blinds, Area Rugs, Appliances, Garden and Renovation Tools.

15 Things To Consider Beyond Inspection: 1) Indoor/Outdoor Space and Flow. Is it important that you can easily move from inside to your outside space. Sliding glass doors or do you prefer French doors? 2) Interior Layout. Imagine a typical day at home for you. Does the layout work for your day to day living. 3) Size of Rooms. Will your current furniture fit into the space, measure right away or go back to the home you are purchasing again to make sure. 4) Kitchen Features. Are the appliances included and if so do they work for you. Electric stove or gas stove? Consider natural light and number of sinks, storage and overall flow. 5) Number of Bathrooms and Location. How close is the bathroom to your main living space. Is there an extra powder room for your guests? 6) Bedrooms. If you prefer a darker room to sleep in, do the current window covering block light? If you prefer to read in natural light in your bedroom is there adequate windows and light. 7) Window Size & Placement. Ideally a house has ample and well place windows. You can modify windows if you fit this into your budget. 8) Closets and Cupboards. Are the storage space and layout of the closets ample and if not, consider what you could install to make the closet a better space. 9) Heating & Cooling System. Which rooms face a sunny location. Will this room get too hot in the summer or is it a space where it won’t matter. Look at the house heating and cooling system. If the home already has both, great! If not, you can always install a better system. If you fit it into your budget. 10) Ceiling Height. If someone in your family is tall you should make sure the basement and attic heights are comfortable for the tall one in the family. 11) Pet Check. If you have a cat or dog is the yard space fenced. Moving into a condo? Check the pet restrictions for the complex. 12) Check the Property. How does the driveway slope? Can all of your vehicles fit in the driveway? Is there ample parking outside of the home for your other vehicles or visitors? 13) Outdoor Space. If down the road you wanted to add extra outdoor space or sitting area. Is there an area that would work in the front or back of the home? 14) House Lot Orientation. A south-facing house will maximize nature light but could be hotter in summer months. Consider that the north side of the house will be cooler and which rooms are situated on this side of the house. 15) The Neighborhood. Schools, parks, walking trails, shopping. Are the amenities that 13 are nearby what you or your family need? 11/04/2017 19:20

2017 SPRING SUMMER

EXHIBITIONS At The Reach Gallery Musuem he Reach’s 2017 exhibition program acknowledges Canada’s 150th year of confederation in a series of exhibitions that address our shared colonial history, consider the legacy of its impacts, and explore the possibility of (re)conciliation for present and future generations. In our Spring/Summer season (May 25-September 3,2017), artists from BC and Nova Scotia consider the shaping of colonialist ideologies through mass culture, metanarrative, and popular forms of entertainment. The Great Experiment presents new work by accomplished printmaker Ericka Walker. The exhibition’s title refers to an essay, penned by American John O’Sullivan in 1845, which popularized the notion of manifest destiny and reassured settlers of their right to “overspread and to possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty. Images of industry, agriculture, and warfare mix with jingoistic fragments of text drawn from a variety of historical sources. W Walker’s work challenges the moral authority of nation-building ideals using the same visual language that has been used to entrench them. The exhibition will be accompanied by two mural projects, one in

the gallery and another in the community. Jim Adams: The Irretrievable Momentt is a twopart retrospective exhibition between the Surrey Art Gallery and The Reach Gallery Museum Abbotsford. Adams emigrated from the United States to the lower mainland over four decades ago and has been a mainstay in the cultural community of South 6XUUH\ VLQFH WKHQ 7KH ¿UVW SDUW of the exhibition at the Surrey Art Gallery (opening April 8, 2017) ZLOO H[DPLQH VSHFL¿F WUDMHFWRries of Adams’ art production including his early book works and graphic arts, urban and suburban streetscapes, metaphysical landscapes, allegorical portraits, mythic sketches and aviation abstractions. Focusing on his last two decades of artmaking, The Reach Gallery Museum will present a selection of Adams’ paintings and objects that combine imagery inspired by Classical and African myth and the visual language of sciHQFH ¿FWLRQ

In Ready Player Two, British Columbia artists Sonny Assu and Brendan Tang present a new, collaborative body of work that acknowledges and gives shape to concealed and erased Immigrant-Settler (i.e. non-European) and Indigenous histories in British Columbia through their common interests in the future imaginary and what they have collectively referred to as “consumer geek culture.â€? The artists incorporate elements of popular culture—in particular science ÂżFWLRQ DQG YDULRXV FRPLF DQG gaming cultures—to consider the impact of these forms of visual culture on their own practices, and examine how these forms read as symbols of cultural identity and present possibilities for rethinking postcolonial relations in contemporary society. In their individual practices, Tang and Assu frequently negotiate the material and conceptual dynamics of culture and ethnicity. Informed by their mixed-race backgrounds and experiences of Canadian life in the 1980s and 1990s, in Ready Player Two the artists bring together found objects, selections from previous bodies of work, and new collaborative pieces to create immersive spaces that evoke the adolescent sanctuaries of their time: the basement, the arcade, and the comic book store.

allery 7 Theatre is thrilled to present its final production of the 2017/2018 “Be Transformed” Theatre season, Elizabeth von Arnim’s Enchanted April, adapted by Matthew Barber. Described as “a lush, thoroughly refreshing theatrical holiday” and “a magical triumph” by the Los Angeles Times and “a comical, restorative journey of discovery” by Daily Variety, Enchanted April promises to be a transformative theatre experience for theatre goers.

…a lush, thoroughly refreshing theatrical holiday. Escape seldom seemed so sweet. A magical triumph. ~The Los Angeles Times The kind of play that reminds you of why you love theatre. ~The Hartford News

Set in 1922, two frustrated English housewives decide to rent a villa in Italy to escape their bleak, predictable lives and recruit two very different English women to share in the cost and experience. Among the wisteria blossoms and gorgeous Mediterranean sunshine, all four begin to re-discover themselves in ways they didn’t expect, and gain new perspective on what’s most important in their lives. “What a fitting conclusion to a season dedicated to the theme of transformation”, says Gallery 7 Theatre’s Artistic Director, Ken Hildebrandt. “This production promises to be an uplifting and inspiring theatre experience for audiences, and will feature both new and veteran G7 performers.” Directing her first production at Gallery 7 Theatre is Kate Muchmore Woo, theatre professor at Trinity Western University. Kate is a director with credits from around the United States and BC including The Women of Lockerbie (Lock and Key Theatre), The Illusion, As Little Children, and Twelfth Night for TWU SAMC Theatre as well as Crime & Punishment (Pacific Theatre/Stone’s Throw Productions). She holds an MFA degree in Directing from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. Playing the role of Lotty Wilson is Charlene Crawford while Rose Arnott will be played by newcomer, Laura Kehler. Caroline Bramble will be played by Shannon Tauber, while the crotchety Mrs. Graves will be played by Sue Backs. Mellersh, Lotty’s manabout-town husband, will be played by Scott Campbell while Tamara Charman takes on the role of Constanza. Rounding out the cast are Marco Darvasi and Mark Kroeker.

Everyone Deserves the opportunity to build a better life. Too many families spend their days struggling to keep an affordable roof over their heads. That struggle often involves agonizing choices. Choices like do they heat their home this month or do they pay the rent? Second jobs, extra shifts. Moves to neighborhoods that are less safe, where schools might not be as good. Deeper debt. Less spent on health care and healthy food. Too many children for too few rooms. Unsafe, rodent or bug infested, inadequate housing. When housing isn’t affordable and secure, families suffer. You can help Habitat provide a hand up—not a hand out, by volunteering, donating, and shopping and donating to ReStore!

What are Habitat ReStores, and how does it help my community? ReStores are home and building supply stores that accept and resell quality new and used building materials. You save money and you are helping build homes for local families. Shopping at a Habitat ReStore is an environmentally conscious decision, as much of what is sold is diverted from your local landfill. How much do ReStores reduce wastage? Last year Habitat saved 36,000 tons of materials from our Canadian landfills Habitats’ ReStores in Abbotsford and Chilliwack cover all administration, management and fundraising costs for our affiliate. Plus, they contribute money to buy land and build homes. This ensures that 100% of every cash donation goes directly to build homes. What type of items can be donated to my ReStore? Stores accept a wide range of new and gently used items. Commonly donated items include windows, doors, paint, hardware, lumber, tools, lighting fixtures, furniture and appliances and more. To donate goods, please send pictures to restoredonate@habitatufv.ca. Donations may be dropped off or we can pick up.
