1. Pre-baking cookies and other delicious Christmas treats are a great way of staying ahead of the game. Most cookies and other treats can last for a good 3 to 4 weeks in the freezer and still taste like you just baked them! Take a weekend before the holidays hit, and bake like Martha Stewart! Box up those tasty treats up and hide them in your freezer away from hungry eyes! And when that moment finally arrives of those surprise, but well-wishing guests, now you have a last-minute platter of holiday goodness! Now finger foods are always a hard one to have ready, because you never know when that picky eater will arrive at your party and complain about your appies!

Remember those small white twinkle lights that you meant to take down but instead left up all year, well jazz them up with a new string of LED mulit-coloured or perhaps a string of single colour LED lights. A new pop of colour will add a new life to those old lights!

his year, Northern Lights Learning Center celebrates its 22nd year of teaching excellence! Using a multi-sensory approach, the student’s strengths and weaknesses are first determined using both formal and informal testing methods. Then, an Individual Educational Program (IEP) designed specifically for their needs is drawn up and implemented. Using the strengths of the student, I utilize their instructional level to approach and overcome weak areas, providing them with the opportunity to succeed immediately and advance in grade level. This promotes effort, confidence, organization, initiative and a willingness to learn, all key aspects of a successful student. In addition to Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, Readiness Skills, Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, GED, Essay Format and Organizational Skills, we also offer extensive programing for students with learning challenges such as ADHD and Autism, adapting curriculum strands to suit their learning styles.

The BCSPCA has relied upon us to help offset office costs and in addition, to help support their major fundraiser, “Paws For Cause”. We also provide ongoing financial support for the North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association, covering the costs of farrier bills for a mare who requires horseshoes. With Tina’s retirement this year, funding support has been moved over to “Joy”, who suffers from Cushings and requires ongoing medication to treat it. Without support, Tina and Joy could not be ridden and as they are favorites among the emotionally, physically and mentally challenged children and adults who ride, this is an easy fit. We also support Staples Back to School Drive for Underprivileged Students by providing new school supplies and backpacks for 15 high school students within our community who would otherwise be unable to afford these. CHRISTMAS SWEETS Songs Strings and Steps is an annual Christmas tradition in Abbotsford. Produced by Calvin Dyck, this year’s concert features a variety of local and professional artists in unique combinations. “Christmas Sweets” will involve a number of suites; suites of carols and the famous Nutcracker Suite by Tchaikovsky. The first half of the show will feature the entire 2nd Act of the Nutcracker performed by a full orchestra and the renowned dancers from Fraser Valley Academy of Dance directed by John Carney. The plan is to place the orchestra on the floor and give the entire stage at Gateway Church to the dancers. In addition, the team is working on a plan to create a 60 x 30 foot screen to project backdrops. The second half of the show will feature the enchanting Pacific Mennonite Children’s Choir directed by Betty-Ann Vroom, the epic tenor Michael Berg singing “Mary did you Know?” and the talented Abbotsford Youth Orchestra along with professionals playing some new arrangements of the familiar carols as well as a choreographed version of “Jingle Bells” by Barrage. In addition, the audience will be invited to sing classic carols with the orchestra, and there will be a re-telling of the real Christmas story. Creative artist Janet Weston will be helping to decorate the stage, and Songs Strings and Steps is hiring professional sound and lighting techs to present the show. There will be costumes, and surprises for the audience, and of course some unique Christmas sweets to taste.

Peter Pan Prequel Promises Magic & Adventure for Families Gallery 7 Theatre is inviting families to enjoy the magical musical adventure, Peter and the Starcatcher, this November at the Abbotsford Arts Centre. Described as an “absurdly funny fantastical journey” by Entertainment Weekly and “clever and joyous entertainment” by Backstage, Peter and the Starcatcher is the exciting story of how an orphan boy becomes the legendary Peter Pan. Featuring ships sailing the wild seas, singing mermaids and a trunk with a mysterious treasure starstuff, Peter and the Starcatcher promises to be a highly entertaining theatre experience for theatre goers of all ages. Directing the cast of 16 actors who will play over 100 characters, is John Trottier. Holding a BA, BEd and a graduate diploma in Arts Education, Trottier has numerous stage, film and TV acting credits and has directed and taught theatre at TWU and Kwantlen College . This show will mark Trottier’s fifth directing project for Gallery 7 Theatre. “Peter and the Starcatcher is truly a unique play and a departure from traditional storytelling,” explains Trottier. “What makes it unique is that everyone will realize they have a bit of Peter Pan in them and always had. They just needed a little reminder to bring that to the surface.” The production will feature the acting talents of performers from through-out the Fraser Valley. Taking on the role of Peter is newcomer, Miles Merry, while Molly, the precocious young adventurer, is being played by Emily Smith. Rounding out the cast are Ahnika Barber, Will Davis, Rebecca Dougan, Indie Garrett, Jim Harrison, Ellis Hull, Jonas Janz, Glen Kask, Rebecca Laurenti, Cameron McKerchar, Evan Rachwalski, Raelyn Schatz, Elizabeth Seaman, Chris Sherwood, Brennah Toews and Amelia Trottier. A highly talented team of designers have been recruited to help realize Trottier’s creative vision for the show: set design is by UFV theatre student, Matthew Piton, costume design is by Jina Chatterton, lighting design is by Calvin Baker, props design is by Dianna Lewis, and stage management is by Brittany Suderman. What are Habitat ReStores, and how does it help my community? ReStores are home and building supply stores that accept and resell quality new and used building materials. You save money and you are helping build homes for local families. Shopping at a Habitat ReStore is an environmentally conscious decision, as much of what is sold is diverted from your local landfill. How much do ReStores reduce wastage? Last year Habitat saved 36,000 tons of materials from our Canadian landfills Habitats’ ReStores in Abbotsford and Chilliwack cover all administration, management and fundraising costs for our affiliate. Plus, they contribute money to buy land and build homes. This ensures that 100% of every cash donation goes directly to build homes. What type of items can be donated to my ReStore? Stores accept a wide range of new and gently used items. Commonly donated items include windows, doors, paint, hardware, lumber, tools, lighting fixtures, furniture and appliances and more.
