FRASER VALLEY STAGE PRESENTS . . . THE GOLDEN ERA OF

Guys &Dolls

Fraser Valley audiences will once again be delighted and entertained as Fraser Valley Stage brings the Broadway musical Guys and Dolls to the Abbotsford stage for five performances in early March. With a sizable cast of more than 40 singers and dancers, FVS will bring the antics of high-rollin’ crap shooters, their scatter-brained girlfriends and the resolute mission members to the stage with lively dance routines and classic songs such as Luck Be a Lady, Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat and I’ve Never Been in Love Before. Guys and Dolls conquered Broadway in 1951, running for 1,200 performances and winning five Tony Awards. “It’s a period classic. In post Depression days it was fun to be in New York, living the dream with influences of the raucous and the righteous,” said FVS co-producer Marg Kennedy.

“This group is not going to disappoint. The quality of the chorus is right up there with some professional shows,” added Kennedy. “We excel in choral work with big strong voices. Hearing the guys sing will give you goosebumps.” In its 45th year, Fraser Valley Stage has deep roots in the community. The society has performed many lavish Broadway musicals, including Oklahoma, Brigadoon, Fiddler on the Roof and others; and they’ve taken the international stage by storm with their Gilbert and Sullivan operettas The Mikado, Iolanthe, H.M.S. Pinafore and Princess Ida, where they won several awards at G&S festivals in the UK. Directed by FVS’s Paulina Harskamp, with musical direction by Chad Joiner (MEI), and choreography by Debbie Calicetto (Candance Studios in Mission), this show promises to be a big hit with audiences of all ages. “There’s lots of colour and action, taking the audience from the sewers of New York to the clubs of Havana, lots of song and dance and lots of activity,” said Kennedy. “And . . . it’s a love story with a happy ending.” Guys and Dolls runs March 2 – 5, 2016 at Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Way, Abbotsford. Evening performances are 7 p.m. with the Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets are: Adults $25, seniors $22, children under 12 $15, opening night on March 2 $20. They are available online at fraservalleystage.com or at Prospera Credit Union (West Oaks Branch, 3071 South Fraser Way). Call 604-854-5463 for more information. Story and Photo by Jean Konda-Witte

James “Buddyâ€? Rodgers James “Buddyâ€? Rogers was one of those precocious kids who knew at an early age what he wanted to do. James’ love of music and blues came as a result of his Dad bringing home records and a guitar from his job on the railway. At 10 he was already demonstrating a strong musical talent and by 15 his band Texas Storm was opening for major acts featured at Vancouver Blues Clubs (special permission was granted by the LCB for him to do this). When he was 19 he teamed up with former BB King Bassist, Russell Jackson and they played together for the next Ă€ YH \HDUV 5RJHUV WKHQ IRUPHG KLV RZQ EDQG DQG WRXUHG WKURXJKRXW Canada, Europe and the US, before settling back into the Vancouver scene. As a tribute to his father who passed in 2010, James incorporated “Buddyâ€? into his stage name. His Dad was one of his biggest supporters and accompanied him on many of his tours and was instrumental in getting him into the local Vancouver scene at such an early age. 5RRWHG LQ WKH OHDQ VRXQG RI 7H[DV %OXHV -DPHV¡ LQĂ XHQFHV are Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson and Jimmie Vaughan, along with the three Kings - B.B., Albert and Freddie. James’ voice is a dominant force reminiscent of a cross between Robert Cray and Buddy Guy, with a little Duke Robillard thrown into the mix for good measure. In an interview with Michalis Limnios BLUES @ GREECE on November 15, 2012, Rogers had this to say: “Blues is the roots and the rest are the fruits. A root will always need to live for something to grow from it. BB King once said to me, ‘James when I was your age it was Rhythm and Blues, now it’s just Blues. I guess we lost the Rhythm.’ So maybe I can wish people don’t become so scared of the word ‘Blues’. The Fraser Valley Blues Society is hosting James ‘Buddy’ Rogers’ on Sat., Jan. 23rd, 2016 at the Eagles Hall on Essendene Ave. , Abbotsford. It’s going to be a night to remember! Recipes from The Blackberry Kitchen

Baked Caramel Apple with Maple Walnut Ice cream Serves: 2 Total time: 45- 60 minutes Ingredients: 2 Granny Smith apples 2 tbsp. butter 3 tbsp. brown sugar ½ tsp. cinnamon 4 caramels

Instructions: 1) Preheat your oven to 375 degrees

2) To prepare apples, slice off the top Âź (save to munch on while dessert is baking) and a thin slice off the bottom to KHOS WKH DSSOH VLW Ă DW WKHQ VFRRS RXW WKH FRUH DQG VHHGV with a small spoon. If you are feeling a little adventuresome you can make your apple bloom! Using an up and down motion like a sewing machine needle and a sharp paring knife, cut a line about halfway down through the apple between the scooped out core and the peel. Then from the top of the apple cut down about halfway as if you are cutting wedges of the apple. 3) Place your apples in an oven proof dish, unwrap caramels and place two in the center of each apple. Melt your butter and mix with sugar and cinnamon. Divide the mixture over your apples. 4) Bake at 375 degrees for 20-35 minutes or until your apples are tender and begin to soften. 5) Remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer apples into serving bowls, top with a scoop of maple walnut ice cream. Options include using a vanilla ice cream or adding a caramel sauce drizzle or raspberry sauce.

Library For You! Can't get to the library? We come to you! The Fraser Valley Regional Library’s Library For You™ service provides free delivery of library materials to people who are unable to visit the library due to illness, age, or disability. We recognize that getting to the library is a barrier for some people; however, that does not mean they should be shut out of library services. Library For You aims to break down that barrier and take library services beyond the walls of the physical library and out to where it is needed. We provide a range of services for those living in private residences, as well as those living in care facilities and can set up service through a simple phone call. We also offer library support to recreation staff in care facilities to help them run programs and engage with residents. Did you know that you can also borrow an audiobook player from the Library? We provide one-time loans and free demonstrations of audiobook players.
