CREATING A FAUX WOOD FINISH USING GEL STAINS As the cold weather has set in, now is a great time to complete some interior projects. You can create a dramatic faux wood grain finish on virtually any properly prepared surface, giving your room the look and warmth of real wood at a fraction of the cost of installing expensive hardwood. Getting started is a snap, just make sure that you have all your supplies handy!

Supplies Needed:

Base boards with your choice of profile and height 200 grit sandpaper 400 grit super fine sandpaper Board filler – specific to the type of board purchased or reused Flat primer – either white or coloured Gel Stain – Your choice of colour Clean white rags Gloves and any other personal protection equipment needed Stiff and soft natural bristle brush 11/2 inch foam brush, size of foam brush is optional Clear coat varnish.

Step 1 – Preparation Stage

If you are using new baseboards and they are pre-primed, give’em a light sanding with 200 grit sandpaper to rough up the surface. This will allow the gel stain to adhere better to the boards. If you are using reclaimed boards, just make sure that you have repaired any nicks, dents or scrapes on the board using the appropriate type of filler.

Step 2 – Priming Your Boards

Now that everything is repaired and sanded smooth you will want to re-prime the boards as this will add depth and tone for your final results. To enhance your results, you can use a light tone of beige or any other earthy tone as a primer, just remember to always use a flat finish primer.

choose a colour that will tie the room together. Make sure you have lots of clean white rags and gloves for this part of the project. Try to use white rags as coloured rags can sometimes transfer unwanted dye onto your project, drastically changing your final results. Make sure you use gloves to protect your hands as the gel stain is an oil based product and will stain your skin upon contact. With any type of project, always make sure you do practice run on spare material so that you see and feel how to apply the gel stain to your boards as the gel stain itself is quite transparent, almost like a glaze. The application of the gel stain can be done in many different ways using different techniques. Ensure that you are applying the gel stain using a natural bristle brush to the full length of your board to avoid any overlapping or stop marks.

Step 4 – Special Affects Using Different Tools

Once the stain is applied and still wet, you can use various materials to create a replication of “natural wood grains” on your project. You can also use a very stiff brush to achieve that tight grained look that you see in mahogany or fir boards. Using a foam brush will give your boards a wider and thinner grain that you would see in cedar boards. Depending on your preference, you can apply multiple coats of gel stain to create more depth and a darker patina.

Step 5 – Final Faux-tastic Product

Now that you have achieved the look that you want, allow your boards at least 3 days to completely dry and cure. Once the boards are cured, apply oil based clear coat to seal your project. The clear coat is available in many sheen levels. Using a satin finish will give your board a hint of polish but will not draw attention to any imperfections you may have encountered along the way. There are graining tools available that will allow you to create knot holes and other features for intricate board patterns. Just remember there are no rules when it comes to creating the look that you want and that you can use any combination of the above techniques to achieve it.

Once your base coat is dry you may want to give your boards another light sanding using a 400 grit super fine sandpaper. This will allow the gel stain to sink into the surface of your boards.

Step 3 – Applying the Gel Stain

The goal is to use a thin coat of gel stain to achieve the look you want, but too high of a build-up of product will make your final results less desirable. Gel stain comes in many colours and the choice that you make will depend on your existing décor and room features. Be sure to

Amazing Advice, Amazing Service... Pre-approval Mortgage Advice & What to Bring to Your Lender • Pre-approval does not guarantee a mortgage amount or house, but it will help you keep a good house price in mind. • Your personal identification such as your driver’s licence and social insurance card. • Details of your job – pay stubs for confirmation of salary, recent bank statements showing payroll deposit. • If you are self-employed, two years of T4’s and NOA with full T1 Generals for the two most recent tax years. Proof of taxes owing are paid up to date. • A list of assets and liabilities. • Source of down payment and deposit. • Remember closing costs such as legal, inspection, and title search can run you 1.5% to 4% of your house price. Funds must be available in your bank account prior to closing.

Making an Offer to Purchase • The Offer to Purchase is a legal binding document and should be carefully prepared. Work with a realtor to prepare your offer. A vendor may counter your offer or take another offer so don’t be disappointed if you have to look for another house. • Things to consider when putting in an offer on a home. Talk to your realtor for more details: - Who is going on title. Whoever is going to be on title should be determined before hand. - Look around the house for items that you may want included: washer/dryer, Freezer, pool table, yard equipment, shelves. If it is not nailed down, it doesn’t have to stay with the house so it is best to write them in to the contract. - Subjects - Financing, Inspection, Title are the normal ones, but if there is a special circumstance like “subject to sale” or if you are renting back, your realtor can help you. - Amount of deposit. This is the money that is given once you have reviewed and accepted the results of your subjects. This money is rarely refundable, so be absolutely sure that you can move forward. - Completion Date: the day the money leaves your account. Try to leave a day in-between Completion and Possession Date. There are often more deals connected to yours and lawyers need time to get properties registered. - Possession Date: Move in day! Check the time!! It may say 9am, but it may say 3pm. Before you hire a mover, check the time!

Broadway’s Greatest Musical Story by Jean Konda-Witte Photos by Rick MacDonald

Broadway’s greatest musical, Hello, Dolly! will open to much fanfare this March in the Big Apple, but there’s no need to fly to New York. Fraser Valley Stage is bringing the award winning musical to the Abbotsford stage for eight performances Feb. 23 – March 4. “Hello, Dolly! is an exuberant and irresistible story of living life to the fullest,” says artistic director Joanna Unger. “It is so exciting to be bringing such a classic, well-loved musical to the Abbotsford Arts Centre the week before it opens on Broadway.” Dolly Levi (Sharla Sauder) is an independent widow who is an expert in just about everything, especially matchmaking. She has set her sights on her own match with half millionaire Horace Vandergelder (Larry Doan) and the chaos ensues. “We have some wonderful new talent who will blow you away with their acting and vocal abilities,” says Unger. This multiple Tony award winning musical is full to the brim with memorable songs like, Put On Your Sunday Clothes, Before

the Parade Passes By, It Only Takes a Moment and of course, Hello, Dolly! First produced on Broadway in 1964, Hello, Dolly! won a record 10 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, a record held for 37 years. It was later made into a film in 1969 and won three Academy Awards. There’s a lot to like about this local production. “Hello, Dolly! is a family-friendly show, full of excitement and surprises you have never experienced before in live theatre,” adds Unger. “We are extremely fortunate to be able to cast such extraordinary talent. There will be laughter, music, fun, and a touching ending that may just bring a tear to your eye.” Now in its 47th year, Fraser Valley Stage has a reputation of bringing lavish Broadway musicals to life on the Abbotsford stage, most recently with Guys and Dolls and Oklahoma! Both receiving rave reviews. Hello, Dolly! will once again raise the bar for excellence in live musical theatre.

his year, Northern Lights Learning Center celebrates its 20th year of teaching excellence! It has grown into a reputable teaching facility, specializing in tutoring for K-Adult students and is known for its sound academic success. As a permanently certified teacher, Linda Scharf holds a 4 year Bachelor of Education Degree with a major in Special Education, from the University of Alberta. She has been teaching for over 30 years and has designed and implemented IEP’s for over a thousand students, ranging in ages from 4 – 71 years old. Because every student learns differently, it is imperative that each student’s program be specifically designed to fit their individual learning needs. We provide this in-depth, professional tutoring program to you at one of the lowest prices within the Fraser Valley. Northern Lights Learning Center believes that to serve within a community, you must also be a business that can be counted on to support that community. Each year, we take part in a number of charitable events, donating our time, money and support to those in need. For the past 4 years, the BCSPCA has relied upon us to help offset office costs and in addition, to help support their major fundraiser, “Paws For Cause”. We are a gold level sponsor for the Abbotsford Branch and will continue in this role for the coming years. We also provide ongoing financial support for the North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association.

Operating within their budget requires skill, so when a horse goes lame, it effects each and every student who benefits from that ride. For the past 4 years, we have financially supported “Tina’s Toes”, covering the costs of farrier bills for a young mare who requires horseshoes. Without this support, Tina could not be ridden and as she is a favorite among the emotionally, physically and mentally challenged children and adults who go there, this was an easy fit. We additionally support Staples Back to School Drive for Underprivileged Students. Yearly, we purchase new school supplies and backpacks, everything from paper to flash drives, and outfit 15 high school students within our community who would otherwise be unable to afford these. We believe that having the right tools in your education is the surest way to help you succeed, so we also provide no cost tutoring hours to them if needed. At Northern Lights Learning Center, our primary focus is the student. If your child is working below grade level and lacks the confidence and skills necessary to achieve in school, please give us a call. Consultations are free with affordable testing and classes. We can help your child realize their dreams and make them a reality.

ike many of us, you may have started the New Year with a resolution to eat better, exercise more, and just generally live a healthier lifestyle. The problem is that those resolutions rarely stick – in fact, that is exactly what the big-box gyms selling you long-term contract memberships are literally banking on. They are betting that you, like thousands of others, will get all hyped up on your resolution, set some crazy, unattainable goal, lock yourself into a membership, and then after a few weeks in January, will fade out and rarely set foot in the gym again, but still have to help them pay their rent with your locked-in fees!

coaching program we use with our members, and helps set them up for success.

This year, try something a bit different. Don’t make yourself any grand promises, or set crazy goals. Don’t set yourself up for failure by biting off more than you can chew right away. Instead, focus on one behaviour or habit at a time that will bring you closer to your goal without being too difficult. Like the saying goes, the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time!

Try our nutrition coaching program for FREE for the first two months, and let us help you make 2017 the year you really succeed! Contact Coach JP for more details via our website at www.btgfitness.com, or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/btgfitness.

Instead of saying “I’m going to cut out all of the garbage in my diet, and eat right this year”, simply try to Eat More Slowly and Mindfully. Take at least 20 minutes to eat each meal. Savour your food – really TASTE and enjoy it! Set your utensils down completely between bites, and don’t take your next mouthful until your mouth is empty. This incredibly simple habit is the foundation of the nutrition

Instead of saying “I’m going to hit the gym hard four or five times a week” and burning yourself out fast, try just moving more every day. Find an activity you enjoy doing, whether that be walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, yoga, or hey – maybe even one of our fun Small Group Training classes! Start out doing it once per week, and build up slowly, and you’ll have a much better chance of succeeding long-term.

thereach… 2017 Winter /

Spring Exhibitions 2017 will be an exciting year across Canada as the country celebrates the 150th Anniversary of Confederation. Our history as a nation has been fraught with the complexities inherent to colonial activity. For this reason, The Reach Gallery Museum is using this important opportunity to reflect on Canada’s 150th year with exhibitions and programming that will address concepts of decolonization and re/conciliation.

Reconciliation is not an Aboriginal problem, it is a Canadian problem. It involves all of us.

Justice Murray Sinclair Using The Reach’s identity as a Gallery Museum, many of its upcoming exhibitions will combine artistic and historical content to address the legacy of colonialism in the Fraser Valley.

STRETCHERS, HEADERS & FOOTNOTES

Projects by both settler and Indigenous contributors come together to consider the myths of civilization and progress that underpin Canadian identity, suggesting that the destructive impacts of our shared colonial heritage must be assessed through a closer examination of institutions and ideologies that inform our history.

Stretchers, Headers & Footnotes examines the role of the “red brick building” in colonial expansion.

allery 7 Theatre of Abbotsford, BC is thrilled to be presenting Josh MacDonald’s quirky comedy-drama, Halo, starting this January. Described as “theatre at its very best” by the Halifax Herald and “very funny and quite moving” by the Daily News, Halo is the second production in Gallery 7 Theatre’s 2016/2017 “Be Transformed” theatre season. When the face of Jesus Christ suddenly appears on the wall of a Tim Horton’s restaurant, a small town in Nova Scotia is thrown in to euphoric chaos. Is this appearance a miracle? A hoax? While the townsfolk contemplate these questions, a father quietly wrestles with his own faith as he faces a tragedy that has left his daughter in a coma. Now a Canadian classic, Gallery 7 Theatre’s production will be directed by Gallery 7 Theatre’s Artistic Director, Ken Hildebrandt. “Halo is a fun, but also very moving, play about faith and commercialism, how the two are often at cross-purposes and how very real people get caught in the middle” he explains. “The play also explores theatrics verses truth. On the one hand, you have a village caught up in the frenzy of a significant but strange event, and on the other, you have a father who is grappling with what it means to maintain faith in the midst of very real, very raw and very challenging circumstances.” Though the play explores some heavy themes, Hildebrandt is quick to point out that Halo is also quite funny. “Josh Macdonald brilliantly uses comedy to shine light on some

important questions,” Hildebrandt says. “I think audiences will enjoy the characters, relate to their journey, and ultimately be moved by the revelations they experience. The play is really quite genius in its simplicity and theatricality.” Halo will feature the performance talents of actors from the Fraser Valley including Kate Adams, John Dawson, Natalie Hoogstra, Catrina Jackson, Kyle Peckham and Thomas Smith. The production will also showcase the artistic talents of designers from through-out the Lower Mainland. Abbotsford Grand Squares Club presents

ZAJAC RANCH BENEFIT DANCE Sunday March 5, 2017, 1:30 - 4 PM ASAA Hall - 33889 Essendene Ave., Abbotsford

Everyone is Welcome - come out and watch the dancers with a donation to Zajac Ranch At Zajac Ranch for Children we want to ensure that all children and young adults facing chronic, life threatening or debilitating conditions have an opportunity to participate in a Zajac Ranch camp experience. Mindful that many families with special needs children are burdened by significant expenses for specialized care, treatment and education for their children, Zajac Ranch for Children established the Zajac Camper Allowance, which offsets the cost of summer camp by a minimum of 50 percent. Thanks to supporters like you, we’re able to have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of children and youth with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Sponsors: In Abbotsford: Townhall Public House / Aldergrove Credit Union (Mt. Lehman Rd Branch) / CIBC / Crossroads Restaurant / Envision Financial / FABRICLAND / Home Depot / Long & McQuade / Mandarin Garden Restaurant / Paliotti's Ristorante Italiano / Ricky's Country Restaurant / Sound of Music / Walmart Abbotsford West / White Spot Legendary Restaurant / In Aldergrove: Pearce Hardware (1977) Ltd / Otter Farm & Home Co-operative / In Mission: Chances Mission Gaming Centre / FVBS RONA / Safeway / Save On Foods / The Real Canadian Superstore
