PUBLISHER’S NOTE

There is no better time, nor place to be than Summer in the Fraser Valley. We are set to enjoy an abundance of fresh food, berries galore and many events to celebrate the unique mosaic that makes up our community. What’s On Abbotsford is very proud to sponsor a myriad of summer events throughout Abbotsford. The staff is so excited about the months ahead and the chance to celebrate with musicians, artists, athletes, pilots and many more community members making a difference in the community. We have already been taking in the Abbotsford Farm and Country Market on Saturdays in Historic Downtown Abbotsford! There are so many wonderful vendors and opportunities to savor the tastes of the Valley. The berries this year are extraordinary and the Berry Beat Festival July 9 and 10 will be the place to be to celebrate with food, family, music and fun. It all takes place in the Historic Downtown Abbotsford core. Athletes, coaches, family and fans will be descending on our wonderful city July 21st to 24 for B.C. Summer Games. This is a rare chance to see future Olympians in our own backyard. The events take place throughout the community in various sporting locations. Check out all the details and sign up to volunteer at www.bcgames.org.

We look forward to the Agri-Fair on the August long weekend and it is gearing up with a brand new look with so many new activities and The Fraser Valley Music Awards brought to us by CIVL Radio culminating in an evening of live performances and awards on July 16th. It is especially important to us to celebrate with the Fraser Valley Youth Society in the annual Fraser Valley Pride Festival on July 16th taking place at Jubilee Park. We plan to be right in the thick of the celebrations designed to honor the rich diversity of the Fraser Valley. During the month of August, the What’s On Abbotsford Team will be spending their Thursdays at the Jam In Jubilee concert series. The music is always fabulous, and it such a great chance to meet up with friends, new and old. It will be a busy summer and we are preparing to be at all the events. Stop by and say hello and pick up a copy of the premiere events magazine in Abbotsford. Check out a location near you where you can pick the summer edition to keep in touch with everything going on.

If you’re like most people out there trying to lose some weight, you’ve probably seen or heard ads on TV or radio for various weight-loss centres, diet programs, meal replacement shakes, etc. “Lose 10 pounds in 10 days” or “lose weight fast without dieting or exercise” both sound great in theory, so it’s a pretty easy sell. Here’s the real secret those diet and weight-loss companies don’t want you to know: they are not in the business of long-term weight loss. They want you to fail as soon as you stop taking their supplements, eating their pre-packaged food, or drinking their shakes. Why? Because then you’ll hop right back on the crazy rollercoaster and start buying again, which is how they make their money! Most fast weight-loss tricks these days rely on one or more of a few different approaches: supplements (either stimulants or appetite suppressants or both), drugs or hormones, or severe carb restriction. One thing that is true of fast weight loss (I.E. more than 1-2 pounds per week) is that the faster and easier it comes off, the faster and easier it is to put it back on. Any initial, dramatic weight loss is going to be water weight almost exclusively, because your body cannot actually burn off 10 pounds of body fat in ten days – it’s the equivalent of over 40,000 calories! Even if you literally ate nothing, it

would take the average person’s metabolism somewhere between 20 and 40 days to burn that much energy. What all of these quick fixes do, one way or another, is make you shed a bunch of water weight, eventually slow your metabolism, and tie you into a cycle of yo-yoing bodyweight (for more details on exactly why, see the blog article, “Why Diets Fail” on our website at www.btgfitness.com/blog). In short, beware any promises of fast, easy weight loss. Don’t rely on pills, potions, or starving yourself. The faster and easier the weight comes off, the faster and easier it (and more) will go back on. There is a far better way to achieve long-term success without being tied to a program or supplement for the rest of your life, but it isn’t quick, it won’t be “easy”, but it isn’t terribly hard either and it might actually be fun!
