Abbotsford is BACK!

SUN'S OUT, BUNS OUT !

Make your backyard an oasis with a bit of elbow grease. A few landscaping projects go a long way, and will transform your yard into a whole new space! Here are a couple ideas to kickstart your summer in the sun. If you want to add a touch of class and distinction to your outdoor landscape, paving is a hard choice to beat. Patios, walls, walkways – paving has it covered! Paving equals chic in any landscaping context, whether to create a new patio, an alfresco dining area, a relaxation area near a spa or pool, flower borders or a parking area. Good planning is the key to making the most of paving’s potentials. Choose your pavers carefully for the type of look you want to create. The least expensive and the most enduringly popular slabs are the classic

white squares made of concrete. Patio slabs are an ideal solution for covering a large surface with reasonably priced, good quality material. Another option are classic pavers. Uniform pavers, all the same size and shape, come in a wide range of shapes and colours. They can be used to achieve plain, linear designs as well as elaborate geometric patterns. Experiment with the colours of the pavers to enrich the overall effect. After a long day’s work, it’s time to kick back and do some barbecuing! From your classic Weber barbecue to the new-age Big Green Egg, we carry it all. With a new sale event on almost every weekend, it’s prime time to pick up your favourite new backyard appliance. Tie the whole look together and complete your revamped backyard with some barbecue blocks, the perfect accent, and finishing touch to your space.

Blossoming with a Mindset for Growth W e start each day with joy, enthusiasm and an inner drive to face all challenges ... well, not always. When times are good, keeping positive and open comes more naturally, however, through trying and stressful times, maintaining a healthy outlook is much more difficult. How can we keep ourselves motivated, what tools do we need, and where do we get them? It’s quite simple actually - from within. Knowing that each of us are “Experts in Resourcefulness” is powerful. The very essence of embracing the title “Expert” can muster up great confidence and a renewed vision for success. Even the most educated can’t know everything, and we can all certainly learn from others and align ourselves with information and supporters to create an environment that is akin to our individual wants and goals. Two character traits that will help us develop a growth mindset are GRIT (perseverance and passion for long-term goals) and RESILIENCE (ability to get back up when you’ve been knocked down). Some ways we can strengthen these traits are to adopt

praising self-talk, connecting with others who have passion and perseverance, being less rigid in our thoughts and actions, nurturing a sense of purpose, and scheduling time to reflect on our day in a non-judgmental way which will allow us to keep moving forward. Ultimately, the most important person we CAN count on is ourselves, so it’s in our best interests to become our own cheerleader. By welcoming the “Power of Positivity” and Accountability, the laws of attraction will engage and provide the fertilizer to encourage a Blossoming effect. Let’s GROW with it!

World-Famous Murder Mystery Takes to Gallery 7 Stage in May Mystery and intrigue will descend on the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium in Abbotsford when Gallery 7 Theatre presents Agatha Christie’s most famous play, The Mousetrap, this May. Six strangers stranded at an English boarding house during a snow storm are perplexed when one among them is murdered. The suspects include the newly married couple running the guest house, a spinster with an obscure background, an architect more suited to be a chef, a retired Army major, and an unexpected arrival whose car has skidded out in the snow. The job of solving the murder falls to a policeman, whose investigation rattles nerves and shakes many a skeleton in the closet. This riveting and highly entertaining thriller will leave audiences guessing until the very end! “In a theatre season dedicated to exploring the mysteries of life, it was only natural that we include a play by master mystery writer, Agatha Christie,” explains Gallery 7 Theatre’s Executive/Artistic director, Ken Hildebrandt. “I think audiences of all ages are in for a real fun night trying to solve the case before the characters do.” The Mousetrap holds the title of the longest running show in history. It opened in London in 1953, celebrated its 25,000th performance in 2012, and continues to be performed at the St. Martin’s Theatre today. The play also holds the distinction of being the longest running play in Canada, opening at the Toronto Truck Theatre in 1977 and running until early 2004. After 26 years, the play had received over 9,000 performances. Gallery 7 Theatre’s production will feature performers from across the Fraser Valley. Playing Mollie and Giles, the guest house novice proprietors, will be played by Claudia Fraser & Adriel Brandt respectively. Christopher Wren, a hyperactive young man, will be played by James Xavier Lam while Mrs. Boyle, the crotchety retired judge, will be performed by Tamara Charman. Andrew Abrahams will take on the role of Major Metcalf, while the astute young detective, Trotter, will be played by Thomas Smith. Returning to the stage after a 7-year hiatus will be Gallery 7 Theatre’s artistic director, Ken Hildebrandt, in the role of Mr. Paravicini. The Mousetrap will be directed by Kate Muchmore Woo, theatre department chair at Trinity Western

University. Set design is by Reg Parks, costume design is by Heather Davis, lighting design is by Phil Miguel, sound design is by Gabe Kirkley, props design and production photography is by Dianna Lewis and make-up & hair design is by Miranda Martin. The Mousetrap will run for two weekends only, May 18 & 19, 23 26, 2018 at 7:30 PM with matinees on May 19 & 26 at 2:00 PM at the Matsqui Centennial Auditorium, 32315 South Fraser Way, Abbotsford. For tickets and more information, please visit www.gallery7theatre.com or call House of James, 604-852-3701.

Mother’s Day is an International Holiday

S

ome people may know that Mother’s Day was started in the United States as a national holiday in 1908 by Ann Jarvis as a tribute to her mother who had been a peace activist and who had cared for wounded Civil War soldiers. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared it a national holiday on the second Sunday in May. However, the day honoring mothers is FHOHEUDWHG LQ D VLJQLÀFDQW QXPEHU RI FRXQWULHV DQG QRW DOZD\V RQ that second Sunday. For example, Russians celebrate International Women’s Day. The Hindus, especially in Nepal, celebrate Mata Tirtha Aunshi or Mother’s Pilgrimage on the new moon of the month of Baisakh (April/May). Most Arab countries celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21. In China Mother’s Day is becoming more popular as a day to help poor mothers who have no money or family nearby. It is also a day to honor mothers in China. It’s interesting to note that Ann Jarvis, the woman who started the modern celebration of Mother’s Day was upset by all the FRPPHUFLDOLVP WKDW JUHZ DURXQG WKH GD\ VXFK DV FDUGV à RZHUV and candy. In fact, she became so angered by the American War Mothers selling carnations on Mother’s Day that Ann herself was arrested for disturbing the peace. Some of these events include motorcycle shows, swap meets, Christmas Toy runs, charitable runs like the Prostate Cancer rides and other fund-raising events. Every year, CMA gets involved in rallys such as the Sturgis motorcycle rally, one of the largest motorcycle gatherings in the world with over 750,000 people in attendance held the first week of August each year in Sturgis, South Dakota, as well as the Oyster run. A rally in Anacordes, WA with over 35,000 people coming out. The Oyster Run is held on the last weekend of each September. CMA holds one major fund-raising event each year called “Run For the Son”. Chapters from all over the world participate in R4S. Money collected goes to three major ministries that we support. These are, Open Doors Ministries, supplying bibles and study material throughout the world, Missionary Ventures, where we provide motorcycles or bicycles to pastors in remote parts of the world, and to the Jesus Film Project, where they take the Jesus Film to many parts of the world.
