Home Maintenance Tips Replace Furnace Filter

Store Yard Equipment

The air filter in your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) unit needs to be replaced every 1-3 months to keep the air in your home clean and the system running efficiently. Remember to write the date on the new filter so you know when to change it next time.

Prepare your yard equipment for storage. This includes draining fuel from all gas-operated equipment such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, and chain saws. Also, clean all the grass and leaves from your trimmers, mowers and rakes now so you don’t have to deal with rotten material in the spring.

Disconnect and drain Exterior Hoses

Prepare your Deck

Now is the time to disconnect and drain any hoses that are stored outside. Hoses left attached and full of water can be ruined if the water freezes expands and splits the hose

Clean porch and deck furniture, and look for any needed repairs. Cover and store outdoor furniture and barbecues in a protected area. Make sure all soil is emptied from pots and planters. Dirt left in clay pots will freeze and cause the pots to crack if left outside.

Shut off water to outside taps The same thing that can happen to your hose can happen to your pipes. It is a good idea to shut off the valve that controls the flow to your outside tap. This valve is usually located inside your house. Once this valve is shut off open the outside tap to drain any water.

Insulate water heater Check to see if your hot water heater has an R-value of at least 24. Choose a tank insulator that is the right for the size of your tank, and follow the instructions to install. This quick project could save you 4 to 9% in water heating costs, paying for itself in about a year.

Buy Snow removal Gear This is a great time to stock up on snow removal gear and de-icers. Once the snow falls everyone rushes to buy salt and shovels. Get yours now, beat the rush and be prepared for that winter morning when your car is stuck in the driveway.

Clean Gutters The leaves should be mostly gone now, so clean out your gutters and keep water flowing freely away from your house.

GET YOUR JINGLE ON WITH FRASER VALLEY STAGE By Jean Konda-Witte Do you find the holidays more than a little stressful? Then you may need A Christmas Survival Guide. This fun, intimate musical revue of songs and vignettes coming to the Abbotsford stage will most definitely loosen up the tensions of your seasonal stress. Fraser Valley Stage brings this latest holiday classic to the Community Arts Addition for six shows Nov. 30 – Dec. 4, 2016. “It’s HO HO Hilarious!” writes the New York Press. “It’s the funniest Christmas revue around.” The talented cast of FVS stalwarts, Paulina Harskamp, Kelly Shackleford, Marty Peters, Sarah Dussin, David Dalton, Elizabeth Castillo and Josh Levesque use the “Survival Guide” to give advice to each other and the audience on how to cope with the season.

12

“It’s a dedicated cast with amazing talent,” says artistic director Melissa Franson. “The music will have you humming a tune till the New Year.” Through their interactions, this zany cast finds ways to laugh at their own Christmas chaos.

acDona

ld

“It’s not your typical traditional show,” adds Franson. “It’s something a little naughty and nice.” And throughout all the laughter, there is a heartwarming ‘cozying up’ to the true essence of Christmas. Now in its 46th year of bringing quality musical theatre to Abbotsford, Fraser Valley Stage has masterfully intertwined comedy with seasonal songs from the traditional Carol of the Bells and Sleigh Ride to the unorthodox All Those Christmas Clichés and I’d Like to Hitch a Ride with Santa Claus. A Christmas Survival Guide is designed to de-stress and refresh one and all with holiday cheer. “It sold out for two years,” writes Stepping Out Productions. “It’s perfect for corporate and group outings.” A Christmas Survival Guide runs for six shows at the Community Arts Addition, 2329 Crescent Way, Abbotsford. Show times are: Nov. 30, Dec. 1 – 3 at 7:30 p.m. and matinees Dec. 3 – 4 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are available at www.fraservalleystage.com, Prospera Credit Union (West Oaks) or by calling 604-854-5463.

his year, Northern Lights Learning Center celebrates its 20th year of teaching excellence! It has grown into a reputable teaching facility, specializing in tutoring for K-Adult students and is known for its sound academic success. As a permanently certified teacher, Linda Scharf holds a 4 year Bachelor of Education Degree with a major in Special Education, from the University of Alberta. She has been teaching for over 30 years and has designed and implemented IEP’s for over a thousand students, ranging in ages from 4 – 71 years old. Because every student learns differently, it is imperative that each student’s program be specifically designed to fit their individual learning needs. We provide this in-depth, professional tutoring program to you at one of the lowest prices within the Fraser Valley. Northern Lights Learning Center believes that to serve within a community, you must also be a business that can be counted on to support that community. Each year, we take part in a number of charitable events, donating our time, money and support to those in need. For the past 4 years, the BCSPCA has relied upon us to help offset office costs and in addition, to help support their major fundraiser, “Paws For Cause”. We are a gold level sponsor for the Abbotsford Branch and will continue in this role for the coming years. We also provide ongoing financial support for the North Fraser Therapeutic Riding Association.

Operating within their budget requires skill, so when a horse goes lame, it effects each and every student who benefits from that ride. For the past 4 years, we have financially supported “Tina’s Toes”, covering the costs of farrier bills for a young mare who requires horseshoes. Without this support, Tina could not be ridden and as she is a favorite among the emotionally, physically and mentally challenged children and adults who go there, this was an easy fit. We additionally support Staples Back to School Drive for Underprivileged Students. Yearly, we purchase new school supplies and backpacks, everything from paper to flash drives, and outfit 15 high school students within our community who would otherwise be unable to afford these. We believe that having the right tools in your education is the surest way to help you succeed, so we also provide no cost tutoring hours to them if needed. At Northern Lights Learning Center, our primary focus is the student. If your child is working below grade level and lacks the confidence and skills necessary to achieve in school, please give us a call. Consultations are free with affordable testing and classes. We can help your child realize their dreams and make them a reality.

between bites, and don’t take your next mouthful until your mouth is empty. This incredibly simple habit is the foundation of the nutrition coaching program we use with our members, and helps set them up for success.

This year, try something a bit different. Don’t make yourself any grand promises, or set crazy goals. Don’t set yourself up for failure by biting off more than you can chew right away. Instead, focus on one behaviour or habit at a time that will bring you closer to your goal without being too difficult. Like the saying goes, the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time!

Let us help you make 2017 the year you really succeed! Contact Coach JP for more details via our website at www.btgfitness.com, or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/btgfitness.

Instead of saying “I’m going to cut out all of the garbage in my diet, and eat right this year”, simply try to Eat More Slowly and Mindfully. Take at least 20 minutes to eat each meal. Savour your food – really TASTE and enjoy it! Set your utensils down completely

Instead of saying “I’m going to hit the gym hard four or five times a week” and burning yourself out fast, try just moving more every day. Find an activity you enjoy doing, whether that be walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, yoga, or hey – maybe even one of our fun Small Group Training classes! Start out doing it once per week, and build up slowly, and you’ll have a much better chance of succeeding long-term.

This issue of What’s On probably finds you sometime in the pre-Christmas season, and inevitably as the end of the year approaches, people start thinking about New Year’s Resolutions to eat better, exercise more, and just generally live healthier lives. The problem is that those resolutions rarely stick – in fact, that is exactly what the big-box gyms selling you long-term contract memberships are literally banking on. They are betting that you, like thousands of others, will get all hyped up on your resolution, set some crazy, unattainable goal, lock yourself into a membership, and then after a few weeks in January, will fade out and rarely set foot in the gym again, but still have to help them pay their rent with your locked-in fees!

In their upcoming production, Abbotsford Children’s Theatre (ACT) takes you behind the scenes where the fun really begins. “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” is a touching story about the pitfalls and mishaps that can get in the way of the production of a Christmas pageant. An annual event that has followed a familiar pattern every year is suddenly thrown off track when the director breaks her leg and is forced to step aside. Then a family of unruly kids invades the church one Sunday. The Herdmans were considered the worst kids in the whole world. There were six of them and they proceed to take over all the

The cast is an energetic and vibrant group of young actors aged 9 – 17 years old who bring to life a play that is funny and delightfully unpredictable. his November, Louisa M. Alcott’s beloved story, Little Women, will come alive in a heartwarming, often humorous stage adaptation presented by Abbotsford’s full-time theatre company, Gallery 7 Theatre. Adapted by Peter Clapham, audiences will experience the well-known classic anew as they follow the adventures of the young March sisters. Set during the American Civil War, Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy make the most of their humble childhood despite the hardships they face. As the girls deal with adversity, sibling rivalry, malady and the doting boy from next door, each sister begins to discover a unique sense of meaning and purpose in life and slowly blossom in to adults. “Little Women is about growing up,” explains the play’s director, Beth Gasser. “When you’re a kid, you think you know what it means to be an adult until you get there. Then you realize being an adult is all about continual growth based on life experiences.” Explaining that the production is a faithful adaptation of Alcott’s novel, Gasser also points out that the play focusses more on the first part of the story when the March sisters are truly “little” women. For Gasser, this points to an important theme in the play: “We don’t know what will happen to us in the future,” she says. “It’s important to celebrate the good things as they happen, and through all things, stay connected to the people who are in our lives. The play is ultimately about valuing other people

and about focussing less on self and more on others.” Gallery 7 Theatre’s production will feature talented performers from through-out the Fraser Valley. Collaborating with Gasser to bring the story to life design-wise is an equally talented team of artists. Set design is by Nicolai Kuchin, costume design is by Dani Dejong, lighting design is by Phil Miguel and sound design is by Gabe Kirkley. Stage manager for the show will be Yvonne Spuls and the production photography is by Dianna Lewis Photography. When asked why people should come to see this production, Gasser suggests that “audiences will relate to the story regardless of it taking place in the 1800’s. The sisters’ interactions with each other are very relatable, resulting in some very comical moments.” Little Women, written by Peter Clapham and adapted from the novel by Louisa M. Alcott, will run November 11 & 12, 16 – 19, 2016 @ 7:30 PM with additional discount matinees on Nov. 12 & 19 at 2:00 PM at the Abbotsford Arts Centre, 2329 Crescent Way, Abbotsford. Tickets can be

Our mission is to build and maintain networks and opportunities for learning, support and expression among, around and about queer and questioning youth in the Fraser Valley.

We run weekly dropin groups in the communities of Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Mission. We facilitate at least one workshop and one group discussion each month. Topics include; Sexual and Gender Identity; Body Positivity; Safe Spaces and Community Engagement; Healthy Relationships; and any other topics relevant “It feels inclusive.” to what LGBTQ+ youth are facing in the Fraser Valley. Youth Activities: • YAC - Youth Advisory Council (Lead by youth) and weekly Drop-ins • Fraser Valley Pride • Vancouver Pride, Surrey Pride, Queer Prom and Camp Out • Special Events, fundraising and fieldtrips • Community connections • Staff and Youth Youth Engaged for Sustainable Healthcare (YESH) We provide opportunities for personal growth and leadership through our YESH program. The

YESH program is designed to be a leadership initiative of its own. Members become part of the Youth Advisory Council (YAC) and meet with their colleagues to brainstorm, plan and then implement their ideas on how to create safe, supportive, and healthy spaces and relationships with others in the community. A big thank you to our departing Program Coordinators, Jennifer Conway-Brown and Ray Covenant for all your hard work and dedication to our organization and especially our youth. We would like to welcome our new Program Coordinators. Simon Thorogood joined us in June and is facilitating the Abbotsford and Chilliwack drop-ins. Pierre Richez joined us in September and is facilitating the Mission dropin. Jimmy D Lane If you like electric blues similar to Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan or Jeff Healey, you will love Jimmy D Lane. Jimmy comes from a long family tradition of blues music – the reknowned Jimmy Rogers was his father. Growing up, Jimmy D got to sit by, listen and watch many of the great musicians we still listen to today - Howlin’ Wolf, Albert King, Willie Mabon, Little Walter and Muddy Waters, to name a few. He picked up his first guitar at eight and there’s been no looking back. Throughout the 1990’s he played with and toured with his father. In 1995 Jimmy D decided it was time to go out on his own. Originally from Chicago, Jimmy now resides in Canada. The Chicago Blues Hall of Fame inducted him in April 2013, recognizing him for his contributions and for all the well-known musicians he’s played with. He is a gentle soul known for his “It’s All Good” retort. His voice soothes the soul, his music comes from the heart and once you see him play, you will not forget him because he’s an artist that reaches out and touches something within.
