PUBLISHER’S NOTE
After an usually cold and snowy winter, Spring is definitely on the way in the Fraser Valley! It won’t be too long before the trees explode in colour and the bulbs we planted in the fall make their way out into the sunshine. It is always so surprising and exciting to discover exactly what we have planted. We had the same feeling putting together this issue of What’s On! Abbotsford as we discover all the wonderful events happening around town. Concerts, theatre and musical productions, speakers and new courses designed to start spring off in style. We have also increased the number of businesses and community gathering spots where you can pick up a copy of the magazine. Check us out online at www.whatsonabbotsford for a place near to you. Whatever you love to do, you will find the information at your fingertips.
19th to the Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase starting at 3 p.m. to visit us. We would love to meet you and hear about you, your business or our community organization! Happy Spring

Amazing Advice, Amazing Service... Pre-approval Mortgage Advice & What to Bring to Your Lender • Pre-approval does not guarantee a mortgage amount or house, but it will help you keep a good house price in mind. • Your personal identification such as your driver’s licence and social insurance card. • Details of your job – pay stubs for confirmation of salary, recent bank statements showing payroll deposit. • If you are self-employed, two years of T4’s and NOA with full T1 Generals for the two most recent tax years. Proof of taxes owing are paid up to date. • A list of assets and liabilities. • Source of down payment and deposit. • Remember closing costs such as legal, inspection, and title search can run you 1.5% to 4% of your house price. Funds must be available in your bank account prior to closing.
Making an Offer to Purchase • The Offer to Purchase is a legal binding document and should be carefully prepared. Work with a realtor to prepare your offer. A vendor may counter your offer or take another offer so don’t be disappointed if you have to look for another house. • Things to consider when putting in an offer on a home. Talk to your realtor for more details: - Who is going on title. Whoever is going to be on title should be determined before hand. - Look around the house for items that you may want included: washer/dryer, Freezer, pool table, yard equipment, shelves. If it is not nailed down, it doesn’t have to stay with the house so it is best to write them in to the contract. - Subjects - Financing, Inspection, Title are the normal ones, but if there is a special circumstance like “subject to sale” or if you are renting back, your realtor can help you. - Amount of deposit. This is the money that is given once you have reviewed and accepted the results of your subjects. This money is rarely refundable, so be absolutely sure that you can move forward. - Completion Date: the day the money leaves your account. Try to leave a day in-between Completion and Possession Date. There are often more deals connected to yours and lawyers need time to get properties registered. - Possession Date: Move in day! Check the time!! It may say 9am, but it may say 3pm. Before you hire a mover, check the time!

Spring in the Valley I
t’s an exciting season for the Fraser Valley. As spring arrives, our vibrant valley bursts to life, lush with color, lush with music. Music is so alive in our community as evident through two thriving community wind ensembles of the Fraser Valley, who are coming together for “Spring in the Valley.” The Fraser Valley Community Winds and the Fraser Valley Wind Ensemble share a common passion for music and a love for sharing music with their community. Both ensembles are diverse groups, comprised of members from all walks of life, musical backgrounds, and around the Fraser Valley. And for the first time, they are coming together to bring you an afternoon of music.
The Fraser Valley Wind Ensemble (FVWE) is based out of Cloverdale, and its mission is to bring communities together through music. They do so by performing regularly throughout the Fraser Valley and lower mainland often in collaboration with other local musicians, composers, or ensembles. Originally founded in 2011 as the Kwantlen University Alumni Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the band quickly expanded to include musicians from a variety of musical backgrounds. The name was subsequently changed to better reflect the diversity of its members, and the Fraser Valley Wind Ensemble was born. The ensemble continues to demonstrate its passion for music, commitment to its mission, and desire to perform quality repertoire at a high musical calibre.
16
The Fraser Valley Community Winds (FVCW) is based out of Abbotsford and has been sharing music with the Fraser Valley since 1960. Originally established as the Abbotsford Concert Band, the group was initially a marching band and although it no longer incorporates marching, it is proud of its heritage and the building blocks upon which it has developed. Now a registered charity as the Abbotsford Concert Band Society (operating as the FVCW), its purpose is to advance appreciation of the arts in the community by producing music for public performances and by providing a place for musicians to practice and grow through participation in rehearsals and performances. Since its beginnings, the ensemble has been sharing music in the Valley and abroad, playing a wide assortment of music from marches to dance music to symphonic festival pieces at just about any sort of community event where music can lift the heart. The FVCW continues to grow and thrive in the community, focusing on musical excellence in the symphonic style, and striving to share its love for the community and its passion for live, acoustic music. “Spring in the Valley” will be a celebration of collaboration, of growth, and of music in our community, with unique sets performed by each ensemble, bringing a variety of works, both new and familiar. So come experience the music. Come experience community. Come experience Spring in the Valley.

F
amilies across the Fraser Valley are invited to be Gallery 7 Theatre’s guest as they present the tale as old as time, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, running March 24 – April 1, 2017 at the Abbotsford Arts Centre. Described as “enormously effective, enchanting and solid family entertainment” by Talkin’ Broadway, this much beloved musical extravaganza will feature the talents of performers, designers and technicians from across the region. Belle, a bookish young woman from a provincial town, stumbles in to an enchanted castle and meets the Beast, a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress. Imprisoned in his castle, the Beast must learn to love and be loved if he is to be transformed back to his formal self. But time is running out. If the Beast does not learn his lesson soon, he and all the inhabitants in his household will be doomed forever. Complete with all the familiar tunes and characters from the classic animated film, this production is sure to delight the young and the young at heart. “We’re looking forward to bringing audiences a feast for the heart, soul and mind” says Gallery 7 Theatre’s artistic director, Ken Hildebrandt. “We’re also putting on some of our own touches: for starters, evening performances will begin at 7:00 PM, a half-hour earlier than our usual start times, so families can enjoy the show together. Plus, after each performance, kids and kids at heart will have the opportunity to take pictures with their favourite characters in full costume!” Directing the show is Cody Friesen, who directed last year’s production of Around the World in 80 Days. “Beauty and the Beast is a play about transformation, love and community,” he says. “My deepest hope is that the audience, too, is transformed by what they see - that they are encouraged to dream a little harder, believe a little more and to recognize that beauty is found within, both in yourself and others.”

Everyone Deserves the opportunity to build a better life. Too many families spend their days struggling to keep an affordable roof over their heads. That struggle often involves agonizing choices. Choices like do they heat their home this month or do they pay the rent? Second jobs, extra shifts. Moves to neighborhoods that are less safe, where schools might not be as good. Deeper debt. Less spent on health care and healthy food. Too many children for too few rooms. Unsafe, rodent or bug infested, inadequate housing. When housing isn’t affordable and secure, families suffer. You can help Habitat provide a hand up—not a hand out, by volunteering, donating, and shopping and donating to ReStore!
What are Habitat ReStores, and how does it help my community? ReStores are home and building supply stores that accept and resell quality new and used building materials. You save money and you are helping build homes for local families. Shopping at a Habitat ReStore is an environmentally conscious decision, as much of what is sold is diverted from your local landfill. How much do ReStores reduce wastage? Last year Habitat saved 36,000 tons of materials from our Canadian landfills Habitats’ ReStores in Abbotsford and Chilliwack cover all administration, management and fundraising costs for our affiliate. Plus, they contribute money to buy land and build homes. This ensures that 100% of every cash donation goes directly to build homes. What type of items can be donated to my ReStore? Stores accept a wide range of new and gently used items. Commonly donated items include windows, doors, paint, hardware, lumber, tools, lighting fixtures, furniture and appliances and more. To donate goods, please send pictures to restoredonate@habitatufv.ca. Donations may be dropped off or we can pick up.
