Welcome www.whatsoncornwall.co.uk

Family

Well, it’s all change around here… Henry has left us to go and run The Guild at The Poly in Falmouth and Ellen has joined the team as a Business and Administration apprentice, so if you call us it will largely be Ellen you speak to. We have also altered our winter print schedule, mainly so I can get off to India for a few weeks to practice yoga. So, we will now go: • • • •

October/November December/January/February March/April May

Enjoy what’s left of summer and we’ll see you soon for the start of the winter months!

Rachel Make sure you tell us about it; a basic listing is free or you can upgrade from only £20. See www.whatsoncornwall.co.uk/submit

TRIPLE BILL THEATRE STUDENTS PRESENT: MOJO BY JEZ BUTTERWORTH CHEAP DATE DANCE COMPANY ‘HOW WE LOST IT’ SMOKIN’ DURRYS Mojo is a black comedy written by renowned playwright, screenwriter and film director Jez Butterworth. Set in Soho in the 1950s, it centres around the suitably dysfunctional employees of Ezra’s Atlantic Club. When Ezra starts having shady, back-room meetings with the local gangster Sam Ross about The Wonder Kid of Music, Silver Johnny, Pots and Sweets start planning for their prosperous future. ‘Fish are jumping, and the cotton is high’. But deals with gangsters very rarely go quite as planned...’ In ‘How we lost it’, Cheap Date Dance Company struggle to multi-task as they come to terms with the fact not everything they lose will turn up down the back of the sofa. Smokin’ Durrys, a much acclaimed blues rock duo hailing from Falmouth, are at the forefront of the movement described by NME as ‘The Falmouth Sound’ or ‘the Kernow Wave.’ After a busy year of touring following the release of their mini Album ‘Done Do’um’ they have been described by Classic Rock magazine as one of the hottest 16 new bands in the world, and should not be overlooked.

MODOU N’DIAYE CISSOKHO Master drummer and kora player Modou N’Diaye Cissokho is a member of the internationally renowned Cissokho family of griot musicians from the Casamance region of Southern Senegal. As a virtuoso drummer and percussionist with a superb repertoire of rhythms, he plays a variety of instruments ranging from djembe, sabar and talking drum to his leading instrument, the 22 string kora (West African harp). Before the time of pen and paper in West Africa, it was the role of the Cissokho Griot family to preserve the region’s history by passing on stories of creation and culture through song. Modou’s family are still notorious for producing the most highly-skilled musicians in Senegal’s southern region. These traditional influences continue to inspire his music today whilst allowing him to collaborate with modern ensembles of electric bass and drum kit producing the updated Senegalese sound. modoundiaye.com 18:00 A free Amnesty International event in the AMATA café will be highlighting cases that illustrate the range of current human rights issues in Africa.

PEDAL POWERED SCREENING DOUBLE BILL: SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN & FINDING FELA Cycletricity are a green energy project based in Bristol who provide equipment to convert energy produced by cycling to run a projector and sound system for a special film programme. In Searching for Sugar Man (2012), Two South Africans set out to discover what happened to their unlikely musical hero, the mysterious 1970s rock ‘n’ roller, Rodriguez. Finding Fela (2014) tells the story of Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s life, his music, his social and political importance. He created a new musical movement, Afrobeat, using that forum to express his revolutionary political opinions against the dictatorial Nigerian government of the 1970s and 1980s. His influence helped bring a change towards democracy in Nigeria and promoted Pan Africanist politics to the world.

“Storming gypsy bangers! Twisting folk with a heavy smattering of pounding gypsy dance music – while very new to the scene, Buffos Wake work the crowd like pros, jumping, dancing and bringing you headfirst in the world of eastern European madness – we love them. Sounds like the gate has swung shut behind you at the abandoned fairground” – Playgroup Festival “You may recall a desolate band of misfits in Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas that popped up every now and then with musical interludes of damp and haunting melodies that were, in their own way, quite captivating. Well Buffo’s Wake have a very similar allure; that is intriguing violins and erratic accordions, both utterly besmirched with wonderfully gloomy undertones and lingering vocals” – Stuart Mason, Geeks.co.uk “Buffo’s Wake delight in sudden gear shifts, baffling non-sequiturs and a healthy sense of the absurd, and are undoubtedly the perfect accompaniment to an evening of knees-up silliness, preferably having consumed an obscene quantity of cider” – electricharmonymusic.blogspot.com
