Real Story Real Success Marc has wanted to be a nurse since he was a teenager. When he was in his mid 20’s (late 80’s, early 90’s) living back east, he called around interested in Health Care and was turned away as, at that time, they had just laid off 5000-6000 Health Care workers. For the next 2 decades, Marc was self-employed in the public service sector, worked in manufacturing and finally construction, until the late 2000’s when the recession hit. In 2009, at the age of 45, Marc decided it was time to revisit his dream. He started with the HCA program at DCC and found employment right away between a local private seniors home, private surgical unit and the hospital. In 2011, Marc decided to take it one step further and came back to DCC to take the Practical Nurse Access Program (shortened track for people who are already HCA’s). Marc graduated in 2012 and found employment right away. Today, Marc is employed full time at New Horizons in Campbell River as a Practical Nurse. Marc is living his “teenage dream” and says “I don’t call it work, I am doing what I want to do, it is my passion, it is a dream come true” - Marc Rondeau, Aug 27, 2014

New beginnings for Campbell R With lengthening days and a fresh calendar, January is the month for new beginnings. That is how we feel at the Campbell River Seniors’ Centre Society.

We unpacked into our new space at the Common in just two short weeks in December. But that time gave us an inkling as to the potential and promise of our organization. Having a permanent home allows us to refocus on our mission and determine how we can better meet it. We will elect a new board in early February and they will set our priorities and processes. We must scan their marked interests and find a way to make them happen. There are many agencies in the city that provide excellent pro-

And we want to be part of the voices that advocate for seniors’ concerns…housing, and transportation being two of the top issues. Meanwhile we plan on enjoying a shared coffee or lunch, the Fit for Health classes, and of course are hoping to shout … Bingo!

The seniors love their new big kitchen.

Christine Hildebrand and her husband welcomed their second child in the spring of 2013. She spent her maternity leave year enjoying her family and creating Fresh Dental. It was her growing family that was the inspiration for the new dental clinic located in the Timberline Village. “My goal was to create a dental clinic where I would be excited to bring my own family.” Her challenge was to create a comfortable dental clinic that provided quality dental care with good value. “I am proud to have created a welcoming clinic where our patients feel comfortable.” In addition to dental care, Fresh Dental provides complimentary amenities with the goal of making patients feel more relaxed. Some of the favourites include their ceiling mounted televisions, iPads, warm neck rolls, paraffin hand wax treatments, massaging dental chairs and refreshments. They are open evenings and weekends to make dental appointment scheduling easier for busy families. Fresh Dental is located in the new Timberline Village. It is this location that has been a large part of the reason that the clinic has grown so quickly. “The neighbourhood is a fantastic place to be. Many of our patients live close to

Timberline Village. The other tenants in the Village have been very supportive of our clinic and we certainly enjoy the wonderful products and services that they provide.” The patient focused dental clinic recently celebrated its First Anniversary. Hildebrand attributes the success of the clinic to her staff. “We are fortunate to have a group of women who go above and beyond for our patients. I am so grateful for the care they provide and the enthusiasm they have for their work. It really is the wonderful women that I have the privilege of working with that make the clinic such a great place to be.”

WhatsOn

Affirmation: "Today I give myself permission to be at peace with my emotions" Emotions control our thinking and our behavior and they greatly affect our physical bodies. If we ignore our emotions, we are setting ourselves up for unbalanced physical and emotional conditions.

At the same time, emotional reactivity plays into physical and emotional imbalance. The challenge is to learn to be responsive to situation and events; we can empower ourselves to become responsive as opposed to being reactive.

health

It is important to be honest about the emotions we are experiencing; in other words, own your emotions and bring them into conscious awareness. Take a deep breath and, instead of asking "why" (why is this happening to me....why is this person making me feel so....etc) ask "how" the situation can be redirected toward a more positive outcome (or ask "what" can be done). "How" and "What" keep you solution focused and responsive. "Why" has the potential to keep you problem focused and reactive. To your success!

One of North America's snowiest mountains is located on an island in the Pacific Ocean. Sounds surreal, doesn't it? Unbelievably, it's true! Mount Washington Alpine Resort has long been recognized as one of the world's deep snow capitals. The resort is bordered by Strathcona Provincial Park, BC's oldest provincial park, to the west and the deep blue waters of Georgia Strait to the east. The views of the Pacific Ocean from the top of the mountain are second to none. Mount Washington averages 11.5 metres (over 38 feet!) per winter season.

Ideal for all ability levels with five alpine lifts and five Magic Carpets serve over 1700 acres of ski and snowboard terrain. Beginners have Easy Acres, one of the easiest places to learn to ski and snowboard in North America, and can travel up the mountain in style on one of its five covered Magic Carpets. For the intermediate, meticulously-groomed cruising runs or give the trees a try in the forgiving Goodtime Glades. Experts can dive into the Outback and challenge themselves on one of the steep chutes, pillow lines or tree runs. Providing guests with top-rated nordic experiences, the resort's Raven Lodge and Nordic Centre is perched on the edge of Strathcona Provincial Park and offers unparalleled views on 55kms (30 miles) of machine-groomed cross-country trails. Meandering trails through open meadows and ancient forests. 22kms (13.5 miles) of snowshoeing trails are ready to greet the snow hiker. A trip to Mount Washington must include a visit to the popular Tube Park. There's no better way to spend a fun day or night out with family and friends. And speaking of nights, the mountain operates night skiing for sliding under the stars from Thursdays to Sundays. Mount Washington offers a fine selection of services including five restaurants, retail shops, and an Alpine Village with ski-in/skiout accommodation for over 4000 people.

10 Things Dogs Hate about Their Owners

Pets

1. Yelling at me for barking… I’M A DOG FOR DOG’S SAKE!! 2. Taking me for a walk, but not letting me check stuff out. Exactly whose walk is this anyway? 3. Blaming your farts on me…not ok! 4. Any haircut that involves bows or ribbons. Now you know why we chew your stuff up when you’re not home. 5. Dog sweaters. Have you noticed the fur? 6. The sleight of hand, fake fetch throw. You fooled a dog! What a proud moment for the top of the food chain. 7. Taking me to the vet for “the big snip,” then acting surprised when I freak out every time we go back. 8. Any trick that involves balancing food on my nose… stop, just stop! 9. Getting upset when I sniff the crotches of your guests. Sorry, but I haven’t quite mastered that handshake thing yet. 10. How you act disgusted when I lick myself. Look, we both know the truth, you’re just jealous. Nevertheless, I am a dog. So I still love you!

6 THINGS YOUR CAT HATES ABOUT YOU 1. Cats choose to ignore you: They can hear you, but couldn’t care less what you have to say. What kind of constant companion willingly tunes you out? 2. They don’t think much of you: If you ever question your pet’s respect for you, it’s probably because your cat doesn’t even see you as a human. To them, you’re just another maternal feline handing out the snacks. 3. They get stressed out when you pet them: It’s a behavior most people practice without even thinking: reaching out to pet a cute animal. Your cat? Hates it. Don’t listen to those purrs of “affection” — they’re just good at faking it and tolerating you. 4. Cat’s feces can kill you: Everything about them basically says you should stay away — even their bodily functions. Cat’s feces contains Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite commonly found in cat litter boxes that infects 30 and 50 percent of the world’s population and is linked to mental health disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety. 5. Even babies know dogs are better: We’ve seen all the aww-inducing videos with tiny babies and even tinier kittens, but kids instinctually know to prefer man’s real best friend (dogs) to cats. 6. Cats are controlling your mind: They’re manipulative, sneaky creatures — and they know it. Cats’ purrs and cries mimic that of babies, purposefully changing their tone when they want something.
